He's joining us live from Chicago right now. Well, I got to imagine that town is unhappy.

I mean, it's not losing. It's the way they lost. I don't even know. Is it a good, I mean, is it a job you'd even consider taking? Is it that bad? What are the positives there? Well, the positive are that you're going to have a full house every week, and this is a football town.

I mean, even in tough times, you know, when the Bulls were having their heyday and obviously the Blackhawks and on and on, I mean, it's a bear's talent. It always will be. And they have a quarterback that's got some talent. So, yes, it's a darn good job. But no, you're right. The town is just turned upside down right now. All what I do is radio and TV for them.

I was walking up the other morning at 7 o'clock to do a show. I didn't even have a cup of coffee yet, and the guy stopped me on the street and wanted to start cussing me out. You and those damn bears wants that. I said, puppy, relax. Relax. I mean, he's got, how'd you like to work next to him all day? Yeah.

Wow. Yeah. So here's my take. Would you go with a young offensive coordinator like a Ben Johnson and just get Caleb right? Would you go with a guy that's more of a tough physical culture builder like Vrabel. Is there a perfect choice? Well, I think here, and obviously I'm a defensive guy. So people would say I'm going to side with the defense.

But in this particular case, you know, and I was coach at the University of Pittsburgh when Mike Tomlin got hired at the Steelers. And he had Bruce Erings and he had Dick Leboe and he had Ben Rothersberger who had won a Super Bowl. Mike can come in, be the head coach over everything. and play that role. With a young quarterback, you know, there's nine, there's what, five rookies starting this year? Yeah.

Five second year, or four second, three or four second year quarterbacks. So my point is the offensive guy, you want somebody, I think, at the Bears, that's an offensive-minded coach that can grow with Caleb. Now, when you look at these offensive coaches, I wouldn't look at a one-year wonder, offensive coordinator or a six-game wonder offensive coordinator. Look at these guys that have some history to them, calling, two or three years.

Because let me tell you what happened to me when I was at the Bears. My third year, we go to the playoffs, win a playoff game here. The next year, my offensive coordinator leaves me, Ron Turner, he goes to University of Illinois. I get another offensive coordinator. I'm at the Dolphins, two years into it. Playoffs, 12 wins, 11 wins. Chan Galey, leaves me, goes to Georgia Tech. hire Norv Turner comes on.

Two years with Norve. Winning 10 games a year, Norve takes the Raiders job. So going on my fifth year at the Dolphins, I was on my third offensive coordinator, and they all say, this is the catch. They all say, oh, no, no, we'll make the terminology and we'll keep the system the same

for the quarterback. They don't. They all believe in things that they've been successful, and that's what you get into. That's why an offensive guy that has experience, I think really would benefit the quarterback. You know, it's interesting as we look at the emergence of run games, Baltimore, Detroit, the Rams with Kairn Williams.

You start looking at the NFL right now, Sequin Barclay Eagles. The run game is back, and do you have a belief why? I mean, there was a two-year period nobody wanted to pay him. I'm looking around the league now. Washington. Atlanta leads their division. All the teams now, Buffalo with James Cook. The run game is back.

Why, in your opinion? Well, number one, I think that it helps the young quarterbacks immensely. Yeah. If you got a young quarterback and you can run the football, boy, does that help him as far as being in manageable third downs? That's the opposite of what the bears are doing. Bears are in shock. and I had a great conversation with Troy Akeling the other day. He was on my radio show,

and Troy was talking about how the Toshanahan tree, the McVease, the guy at Minnesota, obviously McVeigh, all these guys that come under that tree, LaFleur, they all are under center a lot of the time, and it's all timing steps and get the ball out quick. And he said, and Troy made the point. He says, that's where obviously your best play action passes come. Who's going to fall for a play action pass from the guy in a shotgun? So I think that the guys that are running it, and I look this morning, it's funny you bring that up, six of the top 10 running backs in the NFL right now are all the top teams. You mentioned obviously, you know, most of them right there. So my point is, I think that it helps

the young quarterbacks. It gives your quarterback a chance to convert third downs, and obviously you're going to move the change. You're going to score points. it rests your defense. You know, I mean, these teams now all of a sudden they're getting better with defense. As a year goes on, why is that? Because they're arrested. They're not playing as many

snaps as if they're throwing at every dawn. Philadelphia's coach Nick Sariani. I have multiple instances, a hand gesture at a Super Bowl, arguing with a position coach, feisty last week with Zach Ertz, yelling at fans. It's not the way you would have done it.

I mean, Philly's an emotional town. He's an emotional guy so it's working but what do you make of it when you see this stuff yeah that that that turns me off i mean i don't believe in that stuff i wouldn't do that stuff but i will say this i think the last few weeks nick's kind of gotten a little bit quieter and he's and they're one of the few teams they're in the top ten in offense and defense and two other things that tells me that he's got control of his team you know they have the second fewest penalties in a national football league yeah they're plus and turnover margin in the NFL right now.

So all the things that win game for you, sometimes that people don't want to talk about, boy, they are doing a very good job. And they went out and they hired Vic Fangio, you know, and they got the top defense right now in the NFL. So I think, you know, I had a problem with some of the things that he did, but I think overall he's doing a very good job. He's got good people.

He's letting them work. Tell him more is doing a great job with the offense. and that's a key to being a head coach. Okay, so I've got to ask you, Packers are going to Minnesota to play the Vikings. So you got J.J. McCarthy, and if you let Sam Darnold go, you've got a rookie contract for five years. You can go by any weakness. Daniel Jones can be a backup, or you can keep Darnold who's red hot. If you ran the team, you're the GM of this team, even if you're the coach, what do you do with Darnold?

Now you can argue, hey, everybody's going to succeed with Jordan Addison and everybody's going to succeed with Justin Jefferson and to T.J. Hawkinson. Is it the parts? Is it Sam? What do you do with Darnold in that situation? Well, just look at Chicago. I mean, look at our receivers, right? Dundsay, DJ Moore, Kellyn, Kelly, right? Alan, they've got his commit a tight end.

they've got as good as skill people as anybody, and it doesn't mean anything. I would keep Sam Darnold. And I think you could probably get them. What did Baker sign for, Colin, three years around $100 million? I think that he would be a, because you don't know. J.J. McCarthy, I mean, look how many of these first-round quarterbacks that miss. You know, I think JJ's going to be a great player. But we don't know that.

Where we see what Sam does. And I don't know. I think the Vikings are going to come out of this thing and end up winning a division. I really do. Yeah. Host the Packers this weekend. Finally, you do a lot of college football. You were obviously a coach at Pitt.

You were a great recruiter. You were tied with Jimmy Johnson for years at the college level. Ohio State, Oregon, listen, the first round of the playoff, the road teams were awful. I think we go to neutral fields. The games will be much more competitive. I really worry about Texas. I always feel Texas leaves too. many points on the sideline. I watched Ohio State, and I think they're so dynamic. Ryan Day

gets a lot of crap. You do Big Ten networks up, so you've seen Ohio State every week. They lost to Michigan and Oregon, but if you felt like all year long, did you feel like Ohio State was the best team? Did you feel Oregon was? What do you make of that matchup? No, I thought Oregon was, to be honest with you, up until about two weeks ago, three weeks ago. I think Ohio State, everyone, they have the most talent. When they played Oregon the first time, it's very difficult. Yes, it was out of Oregon. We know that.

But it's very difficult to practice the type of speed early in the year that Oregon has on their football team. At running back, at quarterback, at receiver, defensively, they are a fast football team. And, you know, I remember we were at Miami, and we would play the Oklahoma's in the world. world. I mean, it took us time. You couldn't simulate that in practice. But I think it's years going on, I think Ohio State has found its rhythm. I think they've recommitted to the

running game where they're a lot more balanced right now. And I like Ohio State right now where they're at. Early on, they were just so caught up in this wide receiver talent and we're going to open it up and on and on. I mean, that's why they lost Oregon in the first game. I think they had seven runs the whole second half. So they've, no, seriously, they've recommitted to the run game. They've got two outstanding backs. And all those kids, there was about seven guys that would have been top two,

three-round draft picks at Ohio State. They all came back for one reason to win that championship. And boy, I think last week, beaten Tennessee, that was a lot of pressure. I mean, all everybody was talking about is, SEC, SEC, Tennessee, you know, everybody should be in playoff from the SEC. I'll tell you what, it wasn't even a game. That did a lot for Ohio State's confidence. Yeah, I agree.

Dave Wonstadt, one of the good guys, bears, dolphins, Big Ten Network. Great seeing as always, coach. All right, Colin, be safe, buddy. All right. In Chicago and his condo overlooks the city. He has so much information and so many stories. And I don't know, I was very much Vrable in Chicago. That Ben Johnson thing after last night.

I don't know. I'm watching Bryce Young resurgence, Sam resurgence, Baker resurgence, all about a coordinator or an offensive coach. I mean, it's just Herbert with Harbaugh, Herbert's always been good. Jared Goff with Dan Campbell. Jared Goff's always been good. That's different. But when a quarterback has lost, how do you resurrect the franchise?

How do you resurrect the quarterback? Not the franchise, the kid. It's generally offensive coach, certain sensibility that defensive guys don't have. do they play their guys Monday night if the Vikings lose on Sunday to the Packers? And the Lions have the number one seed. That's interesting. And that's why, you know, Week 17, 18, betting is so difficult. Yes. I'm not touching Lions Niners. So if the Vikings win on Sunday against Green Bay, the Week 18 game between Minnesota and Detroit becomes a winner-take-all content,

for home field advantage throughout the playoffs, which means that the Lions game against the Niners Monday could have no impact on the race at all. Dan Campbell, I don't want to hear about it. It's easy for everybody. That way all the critics can jump out and start attacking. But that way, you don't have to debate them anymore. We're bringing everything we got to this game,

and we are playing, and I don't care what it looks like. And where it's at or who's this, who's that? We're going out to play and win this game, out on the West Coast. So there you go. Don't love it. Sounds like a guy who's inside the, they just scored a touchdown. It's a two-point conversion time.

We're going. Penalty backs you up. We're still going. Remember that against the Cowboys? Yeah. I don't like this. New information. What do you say?

New information. New opinion. New opinion. So Dan Campbell should be like, oh, we'll see what's going on. We'll see what happens this weekend. I don't know. Well, I think he,

you know how like as a parent, it's much easier to go from, tough parent to softer parent. You can't go from ice cream for breakfast dad to disciplinarian. The kids don't buy it. So I think it's easier to be hyper-aggressive Dan Campbell

and be a little less aggressive than be a guy that never takes a gamble into Wild Wild West coach who's rolling the dice. And so I think he is holding on to sort of the hyper-aggressive model

and I think there will come a time in one of these games over the next month that he can pull back a little and just say it made sense. But I do think it's always better to be tough dad and move back to a little more empathetic dad than it is softy and to your kids aren't going to buy you. Your team's not going to buy. Hey, I mean business. If you've been like the nice coach and the soft coach and the ice scream for breakfast, Dad. It's tough to pivot to that. I do think Detroit could really use that buy. I mean, everybody could, but this team is so walking wounded right now, defensively, offensively. I think they really need to buy.

Next up, Colin, is the Chicago Bears last night of ghastly performance. Interim head coach Thomas Brown, it's been a rough go, shall we say. Ten game losing streak. And then last night in the fourth quarter, I mean, this is like laughable stuff, Colin. Chicago was down. with all three timeouts, fourth and one from its own 39 with 2.14 left in the game. Fourth and one became fourth and sixth. False start. Brown sent out the punting unit only to call a timeout.

Colin, it was just embarrassing stuff from the Bears. They ended up converting the fourth down but stalled and didn't even get to kick a field goal. I mean, they had a great touchdown thrown. It got called back. That Kayla pass was incredible. I mean, he does that one twice a game. You can see all. you can see the sizzle. There's no question he's got the talent.

Thomas Brown, not a good stretch here for the head. Well, he's been asked to go from quarterback coach to play caller in a very short stretch. I think it's an unwinnable situation. I don't blame the coach. The coaching's not good. Just like when you fired Robert Sala, you fire Matt Eberflux. You're firing the best coach on the staff. Sala was the best Jets coach. Iber Fluse was probably the best coach. That's why it was a head coach. So when you do that, I don't think it's ever a good thing to let the best player, the best coach out of the building.

That's a tough call, especially mid-season. Tough one. Final story is Albert Breer reported last night that the Seahawks, quote, love Gino Smith as a player and a person. Breer also said that Gino would be looking for commitment from the org this offseason. Gino is due $25 million cash next season, and there are now nine. nine quarterbacks making more than 50 mil a year. Gino is 34 years old, probably his last chance at a big payday. I mean, does Gino have any...

Does he have a leg to stand on if he wants to play hardball? Say, hey, everybody else is getting 50 mil. You've got to bump me up. I don't know that he does. His passer rating has gone backwards three years in a row as they've added better weapons. So, again, nice guy. nice story. You're in a division with Stafford, McVeigh, Shanahan. And by the way, it's okay. You can say it. Well, I mean, I just think if you look at the NFC now, there was

about a two-year window. And one of those was Gino's first year in Seattle. There was about a two-year window where Russell left Seattle and Aaron left the Jets. And it feels like, you know, there was a little of the Packers for the J-Hawks. Yeah, there was just a little bit of a window for the Seahawks, you know, and they, they, they, Geno was a pro bowler and it got. Doff was getting settled in in Detroit, and Detroit wasn't Detroit yet. And now Goff's humming. You're right. And Stafford's humming.

And Jordan loves great. And Sam Donald's great. And you start looking around and going, Gino doesn't add up. He's like the seventh to eighth best quarter. Now, Jaden Daniels is humming. Caleb Williams is going to get a legit coach. You're going to look up and you're going to have yourself the eighth to ninth best quarterback. And Jalen Hertz is better.

That was that Seattle year with Gino. I'm getting triggered because that was the year I had to shave the thing in the side of my head, remember? When I was like, oh, Seahawks, I love that was one of my-five-hundred. One of my favorite days in the history of the show. I mean, we should bring that back. But you know, Gino has cratered since, and the window is closed. I don't know if he's cratered or the NFC got better. Fast.

But his numbers are down. And like you said, they've got awesome wide receivers. A really good running back room. Smith and Jigba can play. Metcalfe. Lockett can still play. Noah Fant, Charbonnet, Walker when he's healthy, cross the left tackle. They got players. It's not a lack of players.

I'm sure Gino will be like, hey, it was a new head coach offensive coordinator. He came from college, blah, blah, blah. But like, I don't know. Jayden Daniels has a new head coach and coordinator. He's pretty good. Can't use that as a. I mean, that's not a legit excuse. Michael Pennix got thrown into a game. I don't know. He looked really good.

Yeah. So Sam Darnold, does that do anything for you in Seattle? I. Her cousins? How about Russell Wilson again? I would say Kirk Cousins for a year. One year, Kirk Cousins. And you have to draft a quarterback.

Yes. Riley Leonard, third round. Seattle's roster set outside a quarterback. I mean, I'm dead serious on this. I would make the argument. If you're Seattle and you love Cam Ward, would you give up three first and D.K. Matt Calf? No, no, no.

All right. I'm just throwing it out there. The history, like the history of trading up for the number one pick. Okay. The Bryce Young deal. I know he's played better. It still looks like a really historically badger. J-Mack with the news. Well, that's the news.

Colin, we got Baker Mayfield versus the Panthers, Jordan Law versus the Vikings, Darnold versus the Packers, or Cooper Rush in Philadelphia. Baker Mayfield against the Panthers. It's creeping up a little bit. There's some interesting. Interesting stuff here. So, hey, Christmas week, who wants to travel east to play a game in the cold weather? However, Chargers have had four 1 p.m. starts this year. They have dominated the first half of all those games. They've let it half time of all four. Now, they're not playing great teams.

One was Pittsburgh. But what does that say, Colin? That's a Jim Harbaugh thing. This dude is always prepared. And I do look at this Patriots team. They gave everything max effort last week in Buffalo, right? Hey, we want to play spoiler, division rival. I think they let their guard down a little bit this week.

I don't like some of the vibes in New England. Some of the chatter from the head coach, Mayo, is he coming back? Are we certain? Do you think he's definitely back next year? Yes. Okay. You think Kraft is going on the cheap? All right.

So I'll go with Chargers. Drake May has had a pretty good run this year. I think he's shown well, but this Chargers defense has played excellent. I'll take the Chargers 2713. Tomorrow's headlines today. Broncos at the Bankals. I love Denver in this spot. You know, listen, we love talking Broncos on this show.

You have made them like what, maybe like the show favorite. You love this team because you're all over them. However, the headline will be mall walking. Bengals keep Broncos out of step. Look at that little mall walking. My mom likes to go to the mall and walk around in Florida because it's too hot. Colin, I cannot get enough of Patrick Sertan versus Jumar Chase. So I've been digging into this matchup.

Patrick Surtan this season, one touchdown allowed. He has allowed one catch over 20 yards. He's been locked down, but he's going up against Chase, who leads the NFL in receptions, yards, touchdowns. He's on fire. They met in 2021. You want to guess who had the better of that matchup?

Jamar Chase, one catch for three yards against Sartan. Now, as 2021, a lot has changed, but this is interesting. If T. Higgins cannot go, I will not feel good about my Bengals pick, but ultimately I think Cincinnati gets it. I think they're on a mission. I would not be surprised if we hear after the fact Joe Burrow made it impassioned plea in the locker room.

I want to get in the playoffs. You're seeing a different borough. He's been fired up on the bench, talking back a little bit to the coach. He's a little intent. I like Burrow here, getting the dub, and the Bengals win and cover. You said your mom likes walking in the mall.

J. Mac, everybody's mom likes walking in the mall. Yeah, that's a grandma thing. I did not know that. Okay, yeah. Tomorrow's headlines today. The game that I didn't put in the play. amazing five, but it was the last game. I like the Rams in this spot.

i thought about this one too i tell you i like that colts roster i do and i like the colts a lot you see that number it's coming down and I'll tell you why. The headline will be just like we drew it up. Giants get closer to locking up number one pick. Look at Dave Old There. Listen, Drew Locke, he was bad against Atlanta, which is a bottom feeder defense. However, in the last 30 minutes here, Anthony Richardson has not practiced yet all week.

They thought he was going to go today. So now they just listed him as questionable. And Joe Flacco was taking first team reps all week. So now it's Joe Flacco, which to me, when last one, we saw Flacco. He was awful. He was awful. Yeah. And now I'm a little buyer's remorse. However, like the headline said, this is a Giants team that wants the number one pick badly. You look at who's starting on the offensive line for them, a lot of defensive players who are these dudes, practice squad guys. I mean, Colin, they're not a competitive

team this year. I do think Flacco can do enough. Jonathan Taylor, by the way, running wild. He is having a very good season. They got a good team, man. Oh, I'm Seattle and the Colts. They're a quarterback. away. I like the rosters. I like the GMs. We like Stuyken. I think the Colts will be fine here. Seven and a half. It's a big number to be laying on the road. But the Giants going for the winless season at home, it's bad in New York. Between the Jets and the Giants, it is, it's a rough go for New York football.

I took the points already, and the more I dig in, listen, I like Penn State a lot. They're great at home, we know, under the whiteout scenario against SMU, it was a scene. And SMU gave the game away.

I don't think Boise is going to do that. And you, I'm just telling you, if you want to have fun, go look up, Ash, Justin Gentie versus Oregon this year. Oregon could not stop him. Well, nobody stopped him. Nobody stops this guy. And I know the competition wasn't great, but we're going to see this guy become like one of those. Oh, this guy's legit.

Carving up Penn State. Should be a good game. I'm more fired up for this, I think, than any of the games. Ohio State Oregon's great. Texas, Arizona State a little less over. Georgia, Notre Dame, baby. Well, that's a backup quarterback for Georgia. It's Georgia.

And the Notre Dame stuff that's percolating behind the scenes, which we alluded to yesterday. I don't know if we get to it here in headlines, but there's the college football playoff. I'm excited for it. No, it's going to be great. We do this at the end of every week. I force you to pick an upset.

Let's go to the NFL schedule. Sorry, radio audience. I'm not going to read all the games. I like the Atlanta Falcons to upset the Washington commanders. Michael Pennix impress me. Do you have an upset? Well, what's the line on the Falcons? Four to half?
