And then we question their pitching against the MAPs, and they did the same thing. So they go with a bullpen group tonight, and you'd think it would be time to eat for the Yankees. But I got to tell you, what Dave Roberts is pulling the right strings, 40 different pitchers. Walker Bueller last night,

I thought was really excellent. Derek Jeter, seven World Series appearances, five-time champ. So let's start with Walker Bueller because I remember when he came to the Dodgers. He was going to be not Kershaw, but the next great arm.

And he threw hard, young, baby face. Then he gets hurt. And then he comes back. And it's like, he doesn't quite, overpower you, but he's still effective. What do you see from him? Well, I tell you what, you know, the thing is you said it. I think when Walker came up, he threw so hard that he could just throw the ball right by you. Anytime he gets in trouble,

you rear back, you throw 100. Now he's turned into a pitcher. And I think in this day and age, people pay so much attention to velocity and strikeouts, where if you actually just go out there and pitch, keep hitters off balance, have it put the ball in play, let your defense play behind you. You understand that you can win that way as well. So it was really actually, it was fun to watch Walker because I think you mentioned it.

When he came up, he was the guy that was going to be the ace of the Dodgers. Unfortunately, he had a few injuries that set him back. But I think he's a much better pitcher now than he was when he first came up. So I went and looked five minutes ago. I went and looked up Derek Jeter career playoff stats, and you literally had no slumps. It's just unbelievable. So you can't relate to the question I'm going to ask,

but you probably had one or two slumps in your career. When you're going through what Aaron Judge is going through, I remember A-Rod having, they dropped him in the order to eight. He just struggled. Is it emotional? Are you overthinking? Because golf and baseball, you got a lot of time to sit and think about your next at, you know, at bad or shot.

the times you were in I mean literally once or twice in your career in a slump what's going through your head well I'd tell you know look that's a little unfair because I've had my fair share of slumps I remember in 2001 World Series

I wasn't doing too well the first few games so I hit that home run that Mr. November home run but that's all anyone remembers they don't remember you know us facing shilling and and Randy Johnson and our entire offense was slumping so I think, I'm not talking about Aaron in particular, but when you're in a postseason series and you're not performing how you would like to perform or what the expectations are of you

at the time, you start putting a little pressure on yourself because you want to contribute, you want to help your team out, especially when your team's not winning. And you may try to do too much, but then another thing, in the postseason, you're playing, you're hitting against the best pitchers in the league in that particular year. So if you're not feeling great, if you are struggling a little bit, scuffling, trying to find your swing, it's hard to find it when you're facing the best pitchers in the league. Listen, I felt this about the Mets. The Mets had one great player and then a bunch of good players,

and the Dodgers had several great players. Now, I do think Soto, Judge Stanton, Garrett Cole, obviously, but part of me looks at this, and you're batting Tommy Edmund at the bottom of your order. And Derek, he's like the MVP of the National League Championship. There's no oxygen here. Like there's no out. And I do feel like, I kind of feel like I'm watching a stacked batting order kind of beat a top heavy batting order.

It's just more good hitters. Is that fair? Well, I think it's fair to say that the Dodgers are very, very deep offensively. And look, we've been covering the Dodgers now for a few weeks, and I'll be honest with you during the season. I don't see too many Dodger games because I'm sleep, Colin. I'll tell you, I go to sleep early. But, you know, you watch this team in one through nine they can beat you.

You can't. We always talk about navigating your way through a lineup. And there's really no one you can exhale if you're a pitcher and relax on because these guys are, they put the ball in play and make contact. I think that's the biggest thing. They're tough to strike out. These guys can hit, they can hit for, you know, base hits. They can hit home runs. I mean, they're doing it all.

And you talk about Aaron. And look at Otani. Hasn't really had, you know, the type of series that I think everyone was expecting him to have. but the Dodgers are so deep. They're just tough, man. They're tough, and they have a pretty good team, man. And, you know, Derek, you were outspoken on this, and I appreciate that as somebody who is a legendary player.

That is why I wouldn't have pulled Garrett Cole for the reason you just stated. If you haven't seen the Dodgers a lot, if you can find a pitcher that can get through the lineup, just go with them. Don't mess around with it. Again, it's different. It's guardians. It's different.

or if it's the Mets. But I kind of thought in game one, if you can navigate through this ridiculous batting order, just let Cole go to he's on fumes. And you were outspoken. Do you think beyond game one it set a bad tone? I would necessarily say tone. I think, look, we don't have all the information that the Yankees have,

you know, the things that they're dealing with. I mean, everyone has a blueprint for success when you go into a particular. particular game. But, you know, the way I look at it is you have to watch. And Alex makes a good point on this is, you know, you're just looking at the other dugout and you see what they do when they, when you take the pitcher out. We face a lot of great pitchers. And then when they come out of the game, everyone's running to the bat rack just because it's another look. And I thought, you know, I thought Garrett was pitching well. Who knows what was going on behind the scenes. But I'm a firm believer. You just let them ride as long as you can. But once again, let me just

say it again. I'm not sure exactly what was going on behind the scenes, but if I was in the other dugout, I would have been happy that Garrett Cole is coming out. So Freddie Freeman has hit a home run in five straight world series games dating back to Atlanta. This guy's had he had his son

that story's been well documented. His injuries, he is on a heater. Go to your playoff career. Did you ever have somebody hitting behind you that you just, you couldn't wait to get on, that they're just seeing the, I mean, Freeman now, like, you expect to hit when he comes to the plate.

Yeah. Take me to your career. Well, first, let me talk about Freddie. Yeah, let me tell you about Freddie first. Look, Freddie hits righties. He hits lefties. He hits fast balls. He hits off speed pitches.

He hits the ball of left field, center field, right field. Freddie Freeman is one of the best hiters, overall hiters in the game. Yesterday, I was saying to the guys, he reminds me a little bit of Edgar Martinez. Yeah. Edgar Martinez, obviously, he's right-handed, but this is a guy that hit for average. He hit for power. You don't think of them as being a home run hitter, but he hits for power, and that's exactly what Freddie does. So when he was going through his issues with his ankle, we're saying if just having Freddie Freeman in the lineup with one leg is going to make you better.

Now he's feeling good, but it's tough, man, you know, playing against guys, I mean, Manny Ramirez was like that. David was like that, Ortiz. When these guys come to the plate and you're like, geez, you don't know what's going to happen. But Freddie's, he's locked in right now. And when Freddie Freeman is locked in, there's really no. one way to pitch him. You just hope the person behind them is not swinging that well. You know, analytics are tough. I know Booney, I like him, and I've said this before. The Yankees, they don't make a lot of moves. Cashman's been there forever. The VPs, Aaron Boone, I appreciate

that. I like continuity in my life. I like it in my business. Dave Robert, similarly, people look at him and he doesn't inspire players. And I'm like, listen. Players have to inspire themselves if you're making $300 million. I think he's, I think he's, you know, he's, you he's pulled the right levers in the postseason. Again, you don't want you say you go to bed early, but what have you seen from Dave Roberts that you like? Well, first of all, Dave Roberts is probably one of the best people you'll ever meet. He's always positive.

Look, I think you talk to his players, they'll tell you he's there to pump him up, whether they're doing well in a slump and struggling a little bit. When you're struggling, you need that positive reinforcement. Dave is there. And look, I get it. As a manager, you really don't get as much credit as you deserve when things are going good. But when things are going bad, you basically get all the blame. But, you know, Dave's been a mainstay there.

He's a common influence on the players. He's a common influence on the organization. You know what to expect from him on a day-to-day basis. And he's a big reason why they're here today. Yeah. Finally, you threw out the first pitch last night. Did you practice that? Were you a little nervous?

I didn't. You didn't? I didn't. You know what? I didn't. I throw out the first pitch twice at Yankee Stadium when they retired my number and then a Hall of Fame ceremony. And both times I threw from in front of the mound. And that's the furthest throw I've thrown since I've retired.

And I didn't really think it was going to be that big of a deal for people. But you know how many text messages I got from everyone saying don't bounce it? Because, you know, I told President Bush not to bounce it in 2001. So the pressure was building. And then Kevin Burkhard made a good point. It's not easy to do with dress shoes on that. Yeah. You didn't get good footing at all.

All right. Derek Jeter, one of the all-time greats. Yeah, I have a feeling the Yankees win tonight. I think you can, I mean, remember last time, and I thought the Padres had the Dodgers in big trouble, and they were going to a bullpen game, and I'm like, I think Dodgers are, they're cooked here. And they threw a shit. Didn't they have eight guys? Throw a shutout.

And like almost everybody just threw an inning or an inning in a third. It was like one of the craziest things. And the Padres were on fire. And suddenly nobody could hit. So we'll see. And where does Jeter rank among your all-time favorite baseball players? It's got to be up there. I would say my three favorite players of all time are Johnny Bench,

George Brett, Derek Jeter. Wow. I go John Mattingly, Derek Jeter, and then maybe Jeter overtook him at some point. But I just love the Yankees, obviously. Well, I think, you know, I always say this about Lamar Jackson. Lamar Jackson is the soul of the Ravens. There's a lot of great quarterback. He's the soul of it.

You could argue that Andy Reid and Mahomes share in that in Kansas City. Andy's play design, crafty management play calling, and Mahomes executes it. But I think Lamar is just the soul of the team. They are Lamar. His work ethic, his toughness. Jeter always felt like Jeter and Mariano Rivera You got tossed Posada in there, Bernie Williams

This is the herd line news. We haven't touched on the Cincinnati Bungles since they got blown out Sunday by the Eagles. Man, they dropped the 3 and 5, Colin. Since 2021, there have been 33 teams that have won 10 or more games and that have made the playoffs, okay? So Bengals think, oh, we just got to get to 10. Well, Joe Burrow believes that, and he thinks they can get to 10. wins. We got to win seven out of nine. That's doable. It's doable. So we'll go from nine. I don't think anybody's been good enough so far to win the games that we needed to. Yeah, I don't think

it's doable with that defense. I really don't. And I think, I'm serious about when I said this. I don't think that organization, once you pay Joe Burrow, is going to be financially committed enough. When they moved off Bates, they haven't paid Jamar Chase yet. They haven't paid him yet. They're already moving off Joe Mixon. They're already moving on. The Rams will move off people, but they'll pay people. They'll keep the right guys in the building.

They're moving off people a year in advance. I feel like they're always here's Baltimore in the same division adding an expensive player. Does it feel like, I hate to say this. Their Super Bowl window is closed? It's closed. Oh, close. It's done. But I don't know when it comes back.

This almost has a feel of Dan Marino. Remember Dan Marino goes to the Super Bowl, I think in year two? Everybody's like, oh, Marino set for a great. Never got that. Ask yourself. Three of the best owners in the NFL. Guy in Buffalo, Steve Boshaddy, Baltimore, and the Hunt family in Kansas City. All, by the way, not trying to hoard their money.

All paid more money to get a good player at the trade deadline. You're either all in or you're all out. Cincinnati feels like not interesting. Now, I don't know if the team. team here can get the Bengals schedule, but he said, Burrough said they needed to win seven more. Colin, I'm looking at the schedule. Oh, here we go. We got the schedule. They're not. There are a lot of wins here, okay? They're favored significantly against the Raiders. The Baltimore one, let's just give them one loss there. They're not beating the Baltimore or the

Chargers on the road. They're not beating the Chargers. Chargers are getting healthy. They're not beating the Chargers. They can beat Pittsburgh. Dallas doesn't scare anybody. Tennessee's a dub. Boy, you got all these dubs. Browns are nothing special. You think they're going to beat Denver? Let's not act like Denver's that good. Denver, who's Denver be? Other than the Jets?

I mean, again, the middle class is very thin in the NFL this year. There's top heavy, and then there's a lot of bad teams. Barros optimistic. I feel dumb picking them to go to the Super Bowl in the summer. That was foolish. Let's get to the NBA, Colin. Next story. Laker started 3-0.

Had a tough L last night to the Suns, but it was a great game. I don't know if you saw the end of this after the World Series. Lakers played great. Suns were in control for most of the game. Lakers refused to quit. A 14-point second quarter really was the culprit, and J.J. Redick took responsibility in the post-game.

We should never have a 14-point quarter. So that's on me as well. Part of that is me. I got to make sure we're running good offense. I felt like it was a little random. We got stalled out. We talked about it at halftime for us to be a high-level offense. we've got to move bodies and we've got to move the ball.

And they got a screen and, you know, they just kind of took us out of what we were doing. Initially, we were great second half. We executed great the second half. It's just that second quarter really hurt us. Yeah, it happens. For the record, LeBron almost didn't get the double-digit points.

Yeah, yeah, you needed a three in the fourth quarter. A rough game for LeBron, three of 14. Nevertheless, man, I'm watching this. And J.J. Reddick, down three with like 15 seconds left, drew up a perfect out-of-bounds play. Austin Reeves Open 3, it just rimmed out. Unlucky. You know, overall, though, Anthony Davis, tremendous again.

Austin Reeves had a great game. I'm just, this Laker team looks way better. Now, it's early, but this Laker team looks very, very good. I got to give Kevin Durand a shout out. He was attacking my guy, Gabe Vincent relentlessly in the clutch. Yes, I watched too. I had no money on the game, but, you know, I love hoops. You are not watching the World Series?

No, the World Series was over at that point. Come on. The World Series game was, was it, for nothing? into the ninth inning before the Yankees got that. Well, the Dodgers kept wiggling out all those jams, and then in the ninth inning, the Yankees kind of made you a little nervous. By the way, why did they have G. and Carlos Stanton running around third base with a piano on his back trying to beat the throw from Hernandez?

He was running so slow, I guarantee you, you're faster than Stanton. Well, let's... I mean, Kyle, he looks molasses. It was a perfect throw. It was a perfect loss. From Teaska Hernandez. Like, that was a perfect throw. That, I was sitting, I went and saw my friend last night.

I had a little chicken, parm and spinach. one cocktail and things got loud when that happened it was uh would you want to name the restaurant or no well it was sleigh steak oh yeah yeah yeah i know Manhattan Beach so i was sitting there watching it and it was

it was uh I took a break from my chicken farm but Stanton is I mean come on his 40 times got to like six seconds I mean Tom Brady outruns him in the 40 like Stanton you got to pick it up pal anyways Yankees down 3-0 nothing final story column a lot of NFL breaking news today I don't know if we touched on it, but Stefan Diggs has been ruled out for the season. I don't see.

I'll be honest with you. If Nico Collins comes back and Mixon's healthy, they're fine. Let's not go overboard. Plus, I got to say Diggs, remember, he was betting on himself this year after Buffalo. He's a free agent after this year. So he's not going to get the big payday coming off the ACL. It's really unfortunate for him. Obviously, we had the news of the Colts benching Anthony Richardson.

You're fired up about that. And then about 25 minutes ago, Deontie. Johnson goes back to the AFC North. This time he goes to the Raven, so he'll battle the Steelers. That's a fun story. Remember, Steelers are like, yeah, we've had enough of this guy. You know what? Fan, I think sometimes fans think. Everybody has the same salary cap.

Okay, then why can't the Cowboys afford anybody, but the Chiefs, Bills, and Ravens can? Well, they're contenders. The Cowboys are not. No, but I mean, they Dallas said they couldn't afford Derek Henry last year at the trade deadline, 8 million. It just, we all think all these teams salary cap equal. No, they're not. Baltimore's got players everywhere.

Now, Baltimore's hit on a center, on a receiver, on a safety. So Baltimore hits on enough players in the draft, so they get three and four years of fairly cheap, you know, star players. But it's like, it's all the good AFC teams are adding players. Interestingly, the NFC teams that are good, Detroit, not adding a pass rusher. There's only, the best I can tell, there's one receiver left, maybe two. Who? I would keep an eye on Jacobi Myers, potentially. I like him.

He's very good. I think he's a talented dude. Why did Belichick let him go? That's a good question. I like him. The other one would be. I'll throw this out there. The Raiders wouldn't do it.

If you were the Chargers, would you make a run on Jacobi Myers? I think that, yeah, Chargers need another receiver. They got Ladd McConkey's good and fine, but they need another weapon. The other receiver, I would keep an eye on as Calvin Ridley and Tennessee. see if they have a fire so? He's becoming a bounce around a little bit. Listen, I mean, you've got to get good. But the two cornerbacks that it sounds like,

DJ Reader the Jets and Legerius Need of the Titans, keep an eye on those two if anybody wants to fortify their defense here. I love this NFL trade deadline. Kansas City fans don't want to admit it. But the reason everybody's going all in is because the chiefs are vulnerable. You can admit that, right? The reason everybody's going in is because the chiefs have gone in. Well, that too.

But Kansas City is not an over. overwhelming favorite right now to like steam roll through. I know they have Mahomes and they have Reed, but I'm just telling you, that offense is inferior to what Buffalo has and what Baltimore has. But the defense, of course, is pretty formidable. World Series Game 4 tonight, we just had Derek Jeter on. So over the course of the weekend, the game that got a lot of chatter was San Francisco and Dallas. Dallas in big trouble.

I wouldn't be shocked if they were moving off people at the trade deadline, but it doesn't appear so yet. The other game that got everybody's attention was Washington out playing Chicago, but needing a Hail Mary to win. But what made this game so compelling is even in the Hail Mary, you had Tareke Stevenson, the Bears DB screwing off and eventually did not cover

the guy who made the catch. And I was saying to Danny Parkins, a former radio star in Chicago, I said, you know, I can't believe there's not more fallout on Matt Eber Fluse and the Bears staff over that play, and Danny said, oh, there has been. I talked to a player on the Bears last night who said they like their coaching staff empowers their leadership counsel and takes feedback. So I don't think that they're going to break over this. But the thing with Matt Eberflus that drives me insane is don't you. You know what on my shoes and tell me it's raining.

He was like, I don't think we needed a timeout before the Hail Mary because everyone was in position. Tyreek Stevenson's back was to the ball. Everyone wasn't in position. Matt Eberflus kind of chose the route of denial instead of accountability, and that's the thing, honestly, more than the failed execution that bothered me most. Yeah. It was, yeah, it's just, listen, you can't bury the kid.

Obviously, there's got to be, you know, whatever the punishment is. He's a young player that made a mistake. But when I watched this play, my takeaway was, can you imagine a DB doing this under Belichick? It would never happen. So I think that's just one of the things, there's two or three things you can see from a football team that should worry you as a fan.

J. Mack, when you're talking about a coach, is a guy a good coach or a bad coach? So one of the things I always look for from a good coach when he gets a job, does he know his side of the ball? You can criticize Lincoln Riley, but the offense is good at you. USC. Does he know his side of the ball? McDermott in Buffalo, criticize him all you want. He's been good on the defense for Buffalo.

First thing. One of the first things I don't like about a coach is every weekend I get a different team. Nick Sariani in Philadelphia, you have no idea half to half what you're getting. It's this wild inconsistency. The other thing that I've noticed in my life about football coaches, Calan DeBoer is getting some heat in Alabama over this. I think it's unfair, but it's what he's getting heat. Coaches that let stuff slight.

I've had bosses like this, that they just don't take stuff seriously. They're just not paying attention. And when I watch that Hail Mary play, I do not believe that a Bill Belichick 10 years ago, a Patriot player would be doing this. And again, he's a young kid. Find me the video where I'm wrong, but that falls on the same. staff as much as the players. I know it's easy to say, Colin, hold the players accountable.

They're 25. First time in their life, they're millionaires. Like, kids make mistakes. That's a count. It's like, you can blame the kid, but when my son is 17 years old and makes a mistake, some of it's on the parents. You know, you always tell your kids, do the basics right. Shower, hygiene, do your homework.

Well, when kids show up the next day to class and they don't have their homework done, is that on the parent? because that was the first thing I overstow my kids. First thing you do when you come home, finish your homework. Then you can have snacks, go out, play, swim, whatever you want to do. Do your homework. So when the kid doesn't do his homework, the parents are responsible as much as the kid is for that. So what do we just shadow our kids and make sure they do their homework every single day?

I did. No. Sometimes there's got to be sink or swim. We went through that recently. I hope my son doesn't get upset with this. But, you know, he went through a patch where he was focused on his YouTube channel, you know, and he was focused on his friends and all this stuff. And he used to be straight A's.

His grades dipped a bit. And we let them dip. And then we pointed out, hey, your grades dipped. And we pulled the plug on everything. He realized that, right? You got a sink or swim. He got his grades back up and he got his stuff back. But, Colin, you can't baby this kid Stevenson.

He screwed up. I don't see how that's on. Eber Fluse. And by the way, are the bears doing enough to support him? I don't know. They drafted Roma Dunzee. They got DeAndre Swift. Like, they're doing a lot to support Caleb.

You can't blame this kid. playing Iber Flues for Stevenson screwing up. Come on. But I mean, look at the game. Weird red zone offense. Is that on the O.C? or is that on Iber Fluse? Well, again, Iber Fluse can have a headset on. I mean, Bill Belichick, Bill Belichick was not inserting the plays. Bill Belichick wasn't creating them.

But Belichick would say, and I heard a story one time, Belichick yelling on the headset to Josh McDaniel, don't pad your resume on this. about winning a game, not getting you a fancy touchdown. So a coach's job is to coach for the win. Sometimes a special teams coach wants to go for a block because he wants to, you know, I mean, it's like, hey, I led the league in blocks. A head coach's job is that guys, we're not going for a block here, you know, mass protect, get it down the field. So that's what a coach does. There's too many things going on here. I mean, all I know is this, is the play-bel

Before the Hail Mary did not look like. So the play before the Hail Mary did not look well, coached. That was horrible. They had a spy on Jaden Daniels, which doesn't make any sense. Then the Hail Mary looks poorly coached. That's stuff that you're supposed to go over on Saturday. Those are the Saturday practice things. Buttoned up, as you like to say.

The Bears defense was not buttoned up. Ask yourself this. If I say, like one or two words, so Harbaugh's only been coaching the Chargers for, what, five, six, seven games. They already look more physical than the last two years. They're flawed, but they're a physical football team. Hell, the first week they played, we said, God, J.K. Dobbins, they're physical. Okay, already created a culture.

If I say to you Kansas City, where it's like, oh, they're clever, adaptable, ingenious. Okay, but that's what you think. Colin, Jim Harbaugh and Andy Reid compared to Matt. No, no, no, no, no. But I'm saying it's not about that. It's about what is the coach? So when Sean McVeigh's first year, first year in L.A., they cleaned up that O-line immediately with Whitworth,

and they were a power-run team that threw great on-play action. The good coaches create a culture. Go to Dan Campbell. You and I were working together. So Dan Campbell takes over Detroit. In the first year, they weren't winning. They were, what, one in seven or something? No, but I remember going on the air,

and I think they lost it home to Baltimore. And I remember going on the air saying, that team plays so hard, he created a culture. Let me ask you, Iber Fluse, third year, what are the Bears? I'm not a huge fan of Iber Fluss.

What are they? What's their culture? Beating up on the guy a lot here. Here's the bigger problem. Okay, let's say you dust Iber Flus after the season. You're now getting a new head coach and a new OC. You're starting over everything new with Caleb Williams. Oh, yeah.

Maybe that's the best. Okay. By the way, But you hated Washington doing that. And I told you. Well, Washington did that. Okay. New owner, head coach, quarterback, OCDC.

You were against Washington. You said they got all new stuff. And I said, yeah, but when all the new people are better than all the old people, I'll take new stuff. Yeah. I'm not, Ryan Poles, the GM has been fine. But my take is, I don't, I don't think when I watch that second half just on the play before the Hail Mary, the Hail Mary, the center getting the ball, that second half was a. mess of coaching. You're not wrong. They did come back from down 9-0,

and the defense was awesome in the red zone. Stop in Washington. No, not about it. You got to give the credit to Ryan Poles. When they pulled off that Montez Sweat for a second rounder, and I remember that everybody crapped on Chicago and we're like, you guys watch Montes
