James Jones has a Super Bowl ring, and he disagrees with me vehemently on the overtime. And you make good, good arguments, and I think they're very, very thorough arguments. So let's start with the premise, James, that you do think, I defended saying, listen, when you get into overtime, the league changes it constantly.

you can, by the way, be updated in a huddle. You can be updated during a commercial break. Commercial breaks are longer in the Super Bowl. The referee tried to tell everybody what it was. It's a new game. You both get the ball. So you're getting educated on the fly. But you do have a problem with Kyle Shanahan not giving the guys a heads up before the game.

I do because you're not going to know every little detail about the breakdown, right? But there's certain things you should know. Hey, if it gets into overtime, we're taking the ball. If it gets into overtime, we're not taking the ball. If it gets into overtime, we are going to go for it on fourth down. Like we're going to try to score, touch it, whatever it may be. They should know some of those rules. Did McCarthy update you?

McCarthy always updated us on every situational football. So we would be at practice with Coach Mike, and we would think practice is over. Breakdown and everything. Coach Michael, yeah, overtime, overtime, and we knew exactly, okay, it's overtime. We're getting overtime. We're taking the football. Back then with the old rules, we're taking the football. We're going to go down here, and we know if we know.

we're going if we score we win the football game right but it was always we were always prepared for situational football you know so for me in that situation in the biggest game in the world your team was not prepared for situational football just like they are prepared for situational football on third down just like they prepared for what plays come after turnovers and all that that's situational football that they're prepared for and i understand that happens more than overtime but it's just about being prepared for the situation they caught patrick Mahomes being miced up running off the field and he was shocked he was like they took the ball like they caught him saying that like they're dumb like they took the ball so now okay even if they

do score touchdown we get four downs to go score touchdown my takeaway was shanahan looked at his defense he thought it was gassed the last three drives they scored against them they couldn't move against them early against them late they were getting the yards what about that argument we in the super bowl Like we are in the Super Bowl. We ain't got time to hear nobody saying, you tired? You have 280-something days of rest until the next game. And for you veterans, it might be 300 days since you ain't playing in preseason.

This is the Super Bowl. I don't want to hear the tired stuff. The only time the Kansas City Chief scored a touchdown was off of a muff punt. Other than that, the defense was playing their tails off, right? Patch of Mahomes would drive down, hold them to field goals. They got two takeaways. Like the defense was playing a tail off. Even in the last drive, they held him on third down.

It got to fourth down. Like Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs would have had to punt. You know, for me, as a coach, forget the analytics, forget all that stuff that goes into the football game. Yeah, because you made a really good. You go off of the emotions of your football team. You go off of how your football team is playing. Who was playing the best on both sides of the football for the Niners?

The offense are the defense all game. The defense. You put the defense out there first to go try to stop Patrick Mahomes. And now what you do, hey, Purdy, we got four downs. So now the way I'm calling to play calling, ooh, I got an extra down. So this is really interesting. I think this is the best argument for not taking the football. The best argument you made, say it again.

You do not give a great player in Patrick Mahomes an extra down. You give your young player an extra down to go down there and score a touchdown. Could we imagine how? how many times Patrick Mahomes would have scored all game long if he had an extra down? So you are the second team theoretically, based on what happens first, he gets an extra down. He gets an extra down and has an advantage. That is extremely hard on the defense. So now when it's second and five, it's really first and five.

And as a play caller for Andy Reid, he has all this stuff to get to in his playbook, and it would have been the same for Calh Shanahan. So I think the way San Francisco looks at it, we get the third, even if Mahomes does extra plays and can score, we still get the ball back. So, I mean, listen, your argument is incredibly sound, which is you just go with a better side, and the better side had been the defense for the Niners. And not only that, you help your young quarterback out.

You don't give an all-time great an extra down. It's hard enough to stop him on three downs. You think you're going to stop him on four downs? No, you help your young player out with an extra down. Now you could be a little bit more aggressive, taking somebody's shot plays down to finish. knowing that you have an extra down. Like the Niners, if they would have had an extra down on that last drive

and didn't have to kick that field goal, it's probably a totally different game. You know what the Niners hit their PATs. It's probably a different game. I thought really, honestly, even though there was some luck involved. I'm not a big fan of the word luck. Kansas City fumbled the ball like five times and recovered all of them. No doubt.

And San Francisco had an incredible misfortune on a punt. So some of this came down to, the luck of the winner. Man, I tell people all the time, you need luck to win championship. Absolutely. And I'm not saying the other teams not prepared, but you need a little luck on your side now. San Francisco got a huge break against Detroit

when the ball was picked. Exactly. And one of a guy's face-in-comit. Yeah. So, I mean, that was a huge break in the game. No question. So I do, listen, you could argue, Kansas City got a bit of a thermal,

they got a weather break playing Miami minus 27 degrees. I mean, Miami couldn't throw the ball down. the field so you need luck um so when you look at um i mean you played with aaron and farf when you look at mahomes do you say to yourself is he a combination of both the power arm of farv the ad-living of farb and the precision of erin he's special he is he is he is a special football player people we we had a question on speak yesterday um is patrick mahomes the most talented quarterback that we've ever seen. Most talented. Most talented. And I said, no. The most talented quarterback that I've ever seen with my own two eyes is Aaron Rogers. He is just special. But you see

every bit of that in Patrick Mahomes. Like Patrick Mahomes, when he got this football in the fourth quarter, I knew the game was over. Well, overtime, it was like with the next year. Yeah, in overtime. And with an extra down, I'm like, like the game is over. But there's nothing Patrick Mahomes cannot do. When you talk armed talent, when you talk mobility, when you talk the mental aspect of the game, getting his team in the right plays, when you talk about the things that he does on the fly in a game, things that he sees that other quarterbacks can't see. I tell people all the time, if I did not play with Aaron Rogers, I would not even have the stats that I have today. Because there was certain passes that he threw me.

No other quarterback in the world would even think to throw. And that's what these guys are seeing. Like some of these passes that Patty throws and these dudes are catching them or she writes, Travis Kelsey, but other quarterbacks wouldn't even think to throw those passes. And playing with a great one, he elevates everybody's game. Patrick Mahomes is absolutely special. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you for finishing that sentence. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history.

Always good old lines. No owner, a lot of continuity, weak division. And that's not a knock on Farmer, Aaron. Green Bay is really well right. And Aaron took advantage of it, and so did Brett. But just to give you an example, as much as I like Mahomes, in the last two Super Bowls, Andy Reid's play design has gotten Sky Moore McColl Hardman

And who was the other one last year? Three Red Zone Tony Tedius Tony Caderius Tony Okay, say it out loud Sky Moore Cadarius Tony

McCall Hardman Wide open Red zone touchdowns in a congested area The hardest place to get space If that three receivers wide open You ain't getting that with

99% of the coaches. No question. That has to be said. No doubt. And it was special to watch. Sky Moore's looked on as a miss. Yeah.

Tony didn't suit up for the Super Bowl. And the Jets got rid of McCull Hardman. And Scott Moore didn't even play in the Super Bowl. Wide open red zone touchdown. So I love Mahomes. But if he doesn't have that, defensive coach, not a great coordinator. Yeah. He's trying to jam a ball in in a congested area.

So as great as Mahomes is, let's make sure we say this. Oh, yeah. Andy Reed is a massive part of this. A lot of credit to Andy Reed. And even as I was watching that game, I'm like, Cal Shanahan is a mastermind offensively. He got clearly out-coached by Andy Reed on the offensive side of the ball.

Miko Harmon played better than Brandon Ayuk. That's a great point. NVS played better than Debo Samuel. Holy moly. The backup tight-in for the Kansas City Chiefs played better than George Kill. God. Like if Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid had Iyuk, Kittle, and Debo Samuel, they probably would score 80. Like, you didn't even find a way to get these boys involved in a football game. You and I talked about this yesterday. I remember I had a long conversation with Coach Mike after

one year and he said, I was in his office and he said, JJ, I want to apologize to you. And I'm like, what you're talking about, coach? And he's like, during the offseason, we choose player every day to break down. And he said, last week was your day. We broke you down. I watched every game on you. He said, I want to apologize because the games that we fed you early, you are a phenomenal football player. The days, the games that we did not get you the ball early in the football game and you didn't touch the ball to the third quarter, you stink. And he told me just like that. And I said, you're absolutely right, coach. I don't have to fill of the game. I am checked out of the football game. Like, I'm not even involved in the game.

You told me you're over there eating a kickout. Yeah, I'm on the band. Aaron or I ask me, hey, you open? No. Like, I'm checked out of the game at this point. He never settled them boys down in that football game. You're all pro-receiver Brandon Iuk. You're all pro-tide. You never looked at your play call sheet and said, okay, I got all this stuff. But you know what? Let me get these dudes involved in the football game. Well, especially Debo, who's jet sweep guy, bubble screen guy. He's easy to get involved in the game. Like, Debo had 11 targets.

You know what I mean? It was just the corners. McDuffie and Sneed were doing a heck of a job. But he's easy to get involved. Flos sweet, bubble screen. Iyuk is a route runner down the field. Let's call some plays for him. Kittle is a past catcher tied in.

Obviously, he does it all blocking, but you're not handing him off the ball. You know what? Just like you're not handing off to Travis Kelsey. I don't care if it's a screen to the tight end. I don't care for the, like, let's get these boys involved in the football game. That never happened. You know why you're a great guest? You have changed my mind.

See? Not on the overtime, kind of. But I will say this, is I thought both coaches had a good Sunday. But between not being as decisive in overtime, coupled with the inability to get the ball to three of the stars, Andy Reid is getting the ball to your point. to McColl Hardman, wide open,

MVS. Kelsey had monster games in the playoffs. So you know you're great. When I love Shanahan and Andy Reed, hey, listen, I love McVeigh. Belichick and that Super Bowl, took him to the woodshed. No, no question.

McVeigh acknowledged. Yeah. McVeigh is like, I got totally out coached. 100%. And McVeigh is great. Great offense. And a better coach today. Yeah.

You're right. Yeah. Andy had a day. I was watching the game, and I'm like, it's not hard. Like, sometimes you've got to get out of the X's and O's and the designs and all that too. Sometimes you just got to say, my tight end is big.

He is fast. He is strong. He could catch. Let's put him out while. Let's give him some of my. Like, get your players involved in the football game. A buddy of mine, John Middilcoff, he's a former NFL scout. He does a podcast together and he brought something up.

And it's really true. He said, Shanahan, Kyle's got his offense. It is what it is. And it's great. Andy doesn't. Yeah. Andy just keeps giving you new stuff every game. You know what's crazy.

He's totally adapted. You know what's crazy about that? Early in that football game, the Kansas City Chiefs came out and they did exactly what they did to get there in the playoffs, short passes, screen passes, trying to run the ball. And the Niners shut all that down.

And Andy Reid said, we're going back to the old Kansas City Chiefs. Patrick Mahomes, the ball is in your hands. And then you started seeing shot plays. Like he's changed. right there on the fly. Like, okay, like, I'm not going to win this game doing what we've been doing to get here, playing some good defense, throwing the ball short.

And then he just let Patrick Mahomes be Patrick Mahomes. And that's when he started escaping, throwing the ball down the field. And the whole game plan changed in the second half. And the Kansas City Chiefs went on a run and won the Super Bowl. By the way, I'm doing grades in the final segment. Whatever I gave Shanahan Doc him a grade. Yeah. That's how good of a guest you were.

And not only that. One more point. What? They were up in the game, 10-3, then 10-6. the Niners had three straight three and outs. Like to go down the field. Is that third quarter? Yeah, you're an offensive-minded guru.

Your defense keeps giving you chance after chance after chance. Three straight series in a row. Three and out, three and out, three-and-out, three-and-out. Christian McCaffrey touches the ball one time. Brock Purdy goes two for seven. And the Chiefs are still in the ball game and a one-score game. And obviously, muff, pun, happen, score they go up. And then now it's going back and forth.

Patrick Mahomes gets the ball last. I'm going to tell you out. And also And you brought it today Appreciate it, brother No days off for you No You're not tired

After the Super Bowl No, not at all I hate when they say tired We're in the biggest game in the world I would have to throw up on the football field Before you Like, man Come on man

We were trying to get a ring Legacy All that stuff You told me last week in your Super Bowl Your hands went numb No No I had to get them shot up

All playoffs And in the Super Bowl I felt nothing That's why I wasn't even mad at Greenlaw Everybody like, calm down. I'm like, you guys don't know. You guys do not know. There is nothing your coach can say to you.

Your mom can say to you. Your dad can say to you to get you prepared for the Super Bowl and the adrenaline that's about to be going through your body. You know, that's why I was extremely proud for Brock Purdy. He was the only one on the Niners that I'm like, he's ready. No, he was. Like he ain't worried about the moment. He was, I said this yesterday.

He was totally composed in the first half. Very impressive. He was just, he was cool and calm, man. Hed great senior. Appreciate it, brother. A grade right there. So small news here, but the Pittsburgh Steelers released Maserati. Mitch Trubisky yesterday. Mike Tomlin said they plan on bringing him competition for Kenny Pickett this offseason. If the Bears decide to trade Justin Fields, maybe he's in play. Pittsburgh, we'll see. Mike Tomlin is reportedly a big fan of Fields. Other NFL insiders have mentioned Ryan Tanna Hill. Remember when he was called Ryan Tanna Thrill?

That was funny. I don't. You don't, okay. And Russell Wilson is a potential target for the Steelers. Not quite a poo-poo platter, but a solid list of quarterbacks. I don't trust Pittsburgh's feel for offense. Understandable. I just watched Andy Reid in the Super Bowl.

Now, come on. There's one Andy Reed. Getting Sky Moore wide open. and Darius Tony wide open and McColl Hardman wide open kind of got a feel for the position the sport, the offense. So what are you now out on everybody

who's not scheming up Andy Reid level stuff? Well, I'm just saying I don't trust, I mean, I don't offensive coordinator for years, Ola, I don't trust Pittsburgh's drafting, developing defense, I trust their culture, I don't trust them on offense. So here's the issue, right? So Bill Belichick, genius, has an awesome staff under him. Go to the Super Bowl.

Don't trust his offense. Can't draft it. Can't develop it. So all the Belichick's guys go elsewhere and none of them really had much success. Fine. Okay, Andy Reed can scheme up stuff. Oh, give me his offensive court at her Nagy. Oh, didn't really work out.

Let me get the enemy. Don't, don't gloss over. Matt Nagy got Maserati Mitch Tribisky to the playoffs twice in a division with Aaron Rogers and Stafford in their prime. Don't tell me Matt Nagy can't coach. So why is he getting interviews? Where is he? Why does it know anybody want him?

First, I know Matt. I've talked to him enough to know. Oh, oh, your friends are... Well, I've had texting conversation. Matt's a family guy. There's certain things about getting kids through school. Fair. Knowing he's going to get opportunity.

Ben Johnson turned something down. Not every coach is climbing a ladder. Kids, school, finish it. Matt and Aggie will get another job. Let's be fair. Stafford Prime. Aaron Prime. Kirk Cousins Prime.

He got Tribesky twice to the point. playoffs. So just, let's not gloss over. And that, by the way, that's Andy Reid's with Harbaugh, Super Bowl. Doug Peterson. Again, I'm just saying, like, if you're out on the Steelers' offense and time they have to have shown no ability to feel offense. O-line coordinators.

So a bag of money at Matt Nagy said, come on down. I know you want to put your kids at school. We've got great private schools in Pittsburgh. Great private school. To do what, coordinator? Yeah. Why would I leave Mahomes and Andy Reed for that? No.

Come on. Money? I'll double your salary. You wouldn't take that? If I'm sacrificing job security with those quarterbacks, I want the head job. And they're not getting rid of Tom. Pitchburg's not a Super Bowl. You can't take them seriously right now. They draft well. They develop well. They play defense well. They've got good spirit about them. They don't know offense. I don't trust them. Maybe you get Bo Knicks in there. Your guy, Bo Knicks.

Laugh all you want. I'm not laughing. He's good. All right. Next up is. CD Lamb, who put up big numbers with Dak Prescott. But Lamb's mom still went on social media to criticize the Cowboys QB. She said that DAC isn't it, and the team should get rid of him. CD joined Michael Parsons on his podcast to clear the ear and defend Dak. All right. I don't talk to my mom about my sports nor my personal problem.

She's just being a mom. She knows her son. He comes home mad. Unfortunately, when we lose. Once again, I'm going to repeat this. No, I have no beat for my quarterback. I love my dog. He knows that.

With that being said, it's going to make some more millions. Let's go to score some more touchdowns. All right. It's my mom. I don't talk. Well, I'm sure that's what he's saying in public. I am very curious.

If my wife went out on, she doesn't do social. But if my wife went out and said, I've got real problems with how Fox executives Treat my man. She just ad-libbing that? Maybe. Come on. I know Anne a little bit.

And is not ad-lib in that. Shooting from the hip? She is supporting her man because man would be griping at home if that was the case. Well, I told my wife to stay off social because I've complained to her about you a lot. Who's that? I complained to the wife about you a lot. I'm like, listen, Colin is tough to work with. He only bought seven boxes of Girl Scout cookies.

How about this one? Let's go to the Lakers. Have we talked about them all month? Spencer Dinwiddie, way by the nets. He's now a Los Angeles Lakers. He's a Spencer Dinwiddie, the missing piece to the Lakers puzzle. He's an experienced big guard. It can get you into the offense.

I think it's pretty good. He's good. He's good in the locker room. Here's the Spencer Dinwiddie talking about why he picked the Lakers. I like it. The two situations kind of felt like this, right? Let's say you were a kid and you got your ass foot by the bully. Dallas would have been like your mom would be like, it's okay, baby.

Don't worry about it. Legers are like, your dad, now you better go out there and fight till you win. You feel me? And I just felt like that was what I needed at the time. You feel me? So I'm a big believer in kind of doing what you need to do with whatever time it is. Yeah, I mean, he's a big veteran guard, smart guy, played with a lot of different players, good for chemistry. He's got a reputation.

He's like, like, LeBron wants smart veteran guys. So Spencer Dinwood, he passes the LeBron test. LeBron can get frustrated with squirly young guys. Dinwood, he's a grown-up. I think it's a good... You know, what does it mean? If it makes LeBron comfortable, veterans are good in the playoffs, it absolutely matters. There's guys out there like KCP is one of these guys, and you're like, why is KCP always on winning teams?

They matter. Yeah. Guys like KCP, Spencer, you need guys. They're glue guys. They're mature guys. You know, they rotate defensively in the playoffs. You know, you don't talk a lot about, they're not winning the championship, no.

But they're doing a lot of glue guy stuff that matters. You can lock this in right now. There will be a playoff game where Spencer Dinwiddie goes for 15 to 20 points. The way Lonnie Walker had one awesome game last year. That's all you need from Dinwood. Give me one game. Remember that Miami team when LeBron said, give me Ray Allen, give me Mike Miller, give me Batier.

I love Haslam. And he had all these old guys. That was one of the smartest teams ever constructed. When those games got close in the first few years, Batier, Ray Allen, Haslap. They've been in those wars. They get it. Mike Miller would have maybe one quarter a series,

and you were like, Mike won us that quarter. It's all you need. Spencer did what he could have a big third quarter in a game against Sacramento where he drops 11. It's like, that's all I'm looking for. High IQ players, not selfish me guys. Love it. Jemak with the news.

Like, when the Super Bowl's over, everybody points fingers. But if I would have told you on Labor Day, because the NFL season starts the Thursday after Labor Day, I would have told you, what happened this season? Well, the best roster in the NFC got to a Super Bowl. Oh, San Francisco. Yeah, and then the best coach and the best quarterback in the sport, they figured out a way to get to the Super Bowl.

Okay. And then it was very good game, but the best coach in the quarterback, the game went to overtime, and they have one great drive to win it. Yeah, that would make sense. I know the conspiracy theorists out there got Taylor Swift in it, but if I would have told you in a quarterback sport, you had the best coach and quarterback in overtime had a great drive with a clever play at the end to beat the best Hall of Fame-filled roster in the league. How many surprises were there?

Houston went from a laughing stock to viable. That was surprising. That was surprising. Jacksonville, what happened to them? Probably Trevor Lawrence's injury. That was a little surprising. What were the surprises? I mean, if you really go back and forth,

Rams were better than we thought. Lions went from no playoffs to NFC championship. We both picked the Lions to win the division. Okay, but the NFC Championship. Well, NFC is weaker. Yeah. So, I mean, Houston and the Rams with excellent coaches and quarterback play were better than we thought.

Chargers and the Jaguars, kind of a miss. Cincinnati was a quarterback injury. Jordan Love, we didn't have any idea, bad early, very good late. I would not say that's a shocking development. Baker Mayfield, winning the division? It's easy to say, but when he went to Tampa, I think both of us, I know I said this, he is the best quarterback in the division.

In a division that's not good, he was the best quarterback. So again, is it shocking? Tell me the shocking story. Again, Texans' Rams better than we thought. Jags, Chargers, what the hell happened? There's not a lot of surprises. The minute Burrow got hurt, okay, they're off. Best roster in the NFC

took the best quarterback and coach in the AFC to overtime and the best coaching quarterback won. What about the Ravens losing to the Chiefs, favored, dominant season? They were really good again in Baltimore. Shocker. See you tomorrow.
