Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an IHeart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Hey guys, it's us. The Jonas Brothers. I'm Joe. I'm Kevin. And I'm Nick. And guess what? We created our own podcast called, Hey Jonas.
Starting point is 00:00:12 We invented a podcast? Well, we didn't invent it. We just contributed to it. We're the first people to do podcasts. We get to ask other people questions because we're sick and tired of being asked questions. Well, sick and tired is a strong way to put it. But, you know, tired and sick. Listen to Hey Jonas on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you.
Starting point is 00:00:30 you get your podcast. Just listen. We don't care where you hear it. Another podcast from some SNL late night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the ice. Heart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:01:04 Your husband is not who you think he is. Your body is not what you thought it was. Your identity is formed by a secret history. I'm Danny Shapiro, and these are just a few of the stunning stories I'll be exploring on the 14th season of Family Secrets. He kind of shoved me out of the way and said, move. And he went out the front door, and he jumped in a car and drove off, and that was the last time I saw him. Listen to Season 14 of Family Secrets on the IHeart Radio,
Starting point is 00:01:30 app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Here's something that should not be as complicated as it is, getting a racist statue removed. And here's something that should be a whole lot easier than it is, getting a new one put up in its place. I'm Akila Hughes, and Rebel Spirit Season 2 is about both of those things. As I was watching these statues come down, I was thinking about what it meant that I grew up in a majority black city in which there were more homages to enslavers than there were to enslave people. Listen to Rebel Spirit season two on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Thanks for listening to The Heard podcast. Be sure to catch us live every weekday on Fox Sports Radio in noon to 3 Eastern, 9 a.m. to noon Pacific.
Starting point is 00:02:13 Find your local station for the herd at Fox Sports Radio.com or stream us live every day on the IHeart Radio app by searching Fox Sports Radio or FSR. You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Want to think Tom Brady? stopping by earlier. Danny Parkins 2. Mark Sanchez joins us in 10 minutes but first it's J. Mack the cynical Jets head coach
Starting point is 00:02:39 leaning Jemak with the news. No, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. Boy, it's tough being a fan on this show, man. I, you know, I root for the Jets and you blast me and then I am negative and you're like, hey, come on, turn it
Starting point is 00:02:55 around. Well, I think generally fans go too high or too low, and although I think Vrable is going to make the Patriots better, your roster is, I think, notably better than New England today, and not that far away from Buffalo. So if you hit, and you know what this league is, we've seen this before, a team hits on four draft picks, and you look up and go, oh, they're really good. It doesn't take long in this league that you get the new coaching staff, you hit on your first four picks, and you're pretty good quickly.
Starting point is 00:03:36 Positive Coward. Love it. Let's see if you're positive here. Brian Schottenheimer has become the betting favorite for the Cowboys job after his interview on Tuesday. Per Ian Rappaport of the NFL network, the Cowboys said they're going to meet with Schottenheimer a second time regarding the Dallas Head coaching opening. you know, I'm not going to be as negative as I am on the Jets, but this would be an uninspiring hire. Going from Dion Sanders to Brian Schottenheimer? Well, his last two jobs have been quick and he was shown the door, never been a head coach. He's essentially a nepo baby, isn't he his dad, a legendary Martin Shottonheimer? I think he's shown some capabilities.
Starting point is 00:04:19 What did he show with the Jets as OC? And actually, Mark Sanchez knows that. Maybe Sanchez will defend him, but I'm not the biggest. I'm sorry. Mark's like, how do I get caught in this thing? Well, at least we can talk about it later. All right.
Starting point is 00:04:32 Next up is the Detroit Lions. Yes, obviously they lost another coordinator. That's two in the span of, what, 48 hours? And both excellent. Yeah. I told you, I said when the Lions lost, I said it, my podcast,
Starting point is 00:04:45 I said it Monday on this network, I said, keep your eye on Detroit. They'll be good. Their O-line run game and golf guarantees good. They're going to pull back. They're going to pull back. Now, how much will the Jets pull up?
Starting point is 00:04:56 with Glenn. This is the fifth head coach out of the last six they've hired with a defensive background. Before he left Detroit, Glenn addressed the concerns over his experience. I'm a coach. I just happen to be on defense. I understand the offense, just as well as a number of people. So if you want to hire me, you're going to hire a coach.
Starting point is 00:05:14 You're not going to hire a defensive coach. I'm going to talk to the offense. I'm going to talk to the defense. So Nick Cayley is the Rams passing game coordinator. Keep your eye on Nick Kaylee. To the Jets or Detroit? The Jets. That's Connor Hughes. Oh, okay. It was a New York writer, I think, isn't it? Yeah, he is. He covers New York football. He says Nick Cayley, the Rams passing game coordinator. I don't know much about Nick, so I will...
Starting point is 00:05:44 He's part of the McVeigh tree. Just trust that he knew. Just hire McVeigh guys now. What's his name with the Bengals? Had a cup of coffee with McVeigh, and next thing you know, Zach Taylor's in the Super Bowl, like two years later. So anybody from the McVeigh Tree Works. Final story, Colin, is Ben Johnson settling in nicely to Chicago. He's got the, you see on the screen there, the nice tie that reflects the Chicago Bears colors. He won the press conference today. You love guys who win the press conference, and he made sure to address one of the most important people in the room. Caleb, I'm excited to work with you, but it's going to take more than just you. And there are a lot of pieces already in place, and I can't wait to get to work with the rest of you guys.
Starting point is 00:06:26 Quarterback success is a higher predictor of winning and losing than turnover ratio, which has been for 20 plus years. Okay, that's changed. So there's no doubt Caleb played a large component into my decision. He is a phenomenal talent that had as many quarterbacks do an up and down rookie year. Yeah, I think that's fair. I mean, you saw moments. I think
Starting point is 00:06:56 I have no problem with the hire. I said McCarthy could maybe deal with the politics, but Ben Johnson is, by and large, Ben Johnson is seen as a home run hire. And this should be noted. Detroit is weaker today, not only with Aaron Glenn,
Starting point is 00:07:14 not only with Ben Johnson, but Ben Johnson's going to take their O-line coach. So you could argue, Detroit has lost their three best coaches, their three best coaches, their three best assistants all leaving and Dan Campbell is not a scheme guy that's not what he is and that's okay he's more of a walk-around culture builder guy McVeigh's a scheme guy he loses scheme guys they're fine same with Andy Reed but so this is this is really interesting so Nick Seriani's had success
Starting point is 00:07:43 he's a walk-around guy he's not scheming it up he's not calling place he lost two great coordinators and they were a mess very quickly so around that division call Minnesota could lose Brian Flores. They're going to lose Sam Donald. He's going on. But the offense is safe with Kevin O'Connell. Yeah, but a lot of change in those two. Now, I know Washington has kind of killed the change.
Starting point is 00:08:06 Now, here's what I worry about with Detroit. We're just going to hire within. I don't love hiring within. Sometimes your best candidate, think about this. When you're a big company, there is a chance that the best. employee for a huge job is in-house but don't you want to go hire a search firm are you going to tell me the three best coaches in the NFL or college football
Starting point is 00:08:34 to replace your three best assistants are all in the building yeah that's not the got to go look outside so a lot of these radio hosts they just are radio guys you and I have both run companies have hired people we have it's not as simple as oh give me that guy you got to do a lot of homework on the people and I think this Ben Johnson move There is no Aaron Glenn in the building in Detroit. You've got to go pay seven figures and go get. There's no more Aaron Glens in that building.
Starting point is 00:09:02 And my guess is there's no Ben Johnson in the building. Yeah, I would agree with that guess. I think there's a world where the Bears, you know, they get the right, you have a good draft? Why can't they win that division next year? I think they can compete for it, absolutely. This is not, this is a better situation than Washington. Montez sweats better than anybody Washington had and had on the D-line.
Starting point is 00:09:23 Jalen Johnson's a better corner than anybody Washington had. And though they had Terry McLaurin, you get DJ Moore, Keenan Allen, Roma, Dense. You get two tight ends, I like. This team's better than Washington a year ago. They've got some pieces in place. Yeah, and this division, by the way, unlike the Washington division
Starting point is 00:09:41 where Philadelphia is stacked defensively, and the Giants are decent defensively, this is a soft defensive division that Ben Johnson and Caleb are facing. In fact, I would argue the best defense at times was the Bears. So you'll see a practice defense that may be better than most of the division. That's how I see. Yeah, agree.
Starting point is 00:10:00 J. Mack with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Heard Lye News. Let's bring in Mark Sanchez, Fox Sports NFL analyst the last time the Jets were viable, baby. You okay? You hanging in? Good to see you, buddy.
Starting point is 00:10:18 I have, I said, I come. kind of like Aaron Glenn. I thought what he did with like six starters. You watched Detroit at the end of the year from Thanksgiving on, they were missing six starters. Yeah, that was a tough deal. And he's one of those guys who subscribes to
Starting point is 00:10:35 like, hey, they pay me to coach. Like, not just the superstars. I got to coach the whole roster. He mentioned that in his press conference. So I think regardless of it being a tough market, he's, you know, we see a lot of these coordinators and coaches, whether this guarantees that it translates to a bunch of Super Bowls and a bunch of playoff runs and wins.
Starting point is 00:10:56 I can't guarantee that. But I'll tell you what, I sit down with a lot of coaches in those production meetings before games, and he's been one of the most impressive from the last four years of calling games. Wow. So once again, does that mean they go 10 and 0 to start the season next year? I don't know. Jay Mack obviously thinks no. He's going to bet the under on that.
Starting point is 00:11:14 If you can sit in a meeting with you. No, and once again, some coaches kind of put on a show, this. felt genuine, you know, as a player. You obviously respect the former player aspect, understanding what the guys go through. I think immediately he has some equity with those guys. Yeah. And, you know, the people around him that I know, I've been impressed with, and I haven't heard any negative things. I like their roster. Oh, they got plenty. I mean, you're going to have to figure out what you're doing at quarterback. Yeah. And don't ask Jay Mack, because I know he's down in the dumps about a guy who played better coming off of Achilles injury. He's
Starting point is 00:11:50 41 and had a better year than he did his last year in Green Bay. Like, I mean, better than top half of the league, you're telling me like you can't win with a court. If you just sign up and erase the name and the personality, obviously, for you, Jay, Mack, you'd say, will we take those stats to win? It's better than a lot of other guys that are playing. Yeah. So, and you think a defensive guy like Aaron Lange, I know he said, I'm a coach,
Starting point is 00:12:12 but yeah, he's got a defensive background. He won't take those stats. I don't know. I mean, that's one thing, the performance. Then it's like the attitude, the, are we going to be here? here all offseason, are we all in? That's another issue and then the numbers issue, because they're going to want to go get some players.
Starting point is 00:12:26 They're going to have to figure out how to handle the roster financially. So those three factors are going to play into what you do at quarterback. But I think, you know, I've heard great things about him. I've had great experiences with him in one-on-one. So, you know, obviously, you've got to root for the guy at least, J-Mack. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9-0. AM Pacific on Fox Sports Radio, FS1, and the IHard Radio app. Hey, it's us, the Jonas Brothers, and guess what?
Starting point is 00:12:58 We have some big news. What's the news, name? Huge news. We created our own podcast called, Hey Jonas. We invented a podcast? Well, we didn't invent it. We just contributed to it. We're the first people to do podcasts.
Starting point is 00:13:09 Pretty, yeah, pretty wide range of podcasts throughout there. But this one's extra special. So how did we actually come up with a name, Hey Jonas, guys? I honestly don't remember. I think it was on a call about. what we should call it. Well, we were thinking I'm originally calling it one of the early names of our band.
Starting point is 00:13:29 Before Jonas Brothers was... This is how you guys remember it going down? Yes. I have a very different memory of this. We were talking about a thing, a bit for the podcast where people could call in and say, Hey, Jonas. And then I wrote down on my little notepad,
Starting point is 00:13:42 Hey Jonas, and offered it up as a potential title for the podcast. But thanks for remembering that, guys. Listen to Hey Jonas on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Just listen. We don't care where you hear it. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier.
Starting point is 00:14:07 This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to Humor Me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Jacob Kingston grew up in an isolated polygamous sect. We were God's chosen kingdom on earth.
Starting point is 00:14:32 He felt destined for greatness. So when a swaggering Armenian businessman catapults Jacob into an extraordinary world, he doesn't look back. Ferraris and Lamborghinis, private jets, meeting the president of Turkey. I'm Michelle McPhee. This is one of the most shocking criminal conspiracies I've ever come across. When Jacob met Levan this plant to a billion dollar fraud. But with two kings from entirely different worlds, just how long can their empire survive? The largest tax investigation in American history.
Starting point is 00:15:08 You need to tell me what you know. Is somebody coming after me? Jacob told Levan, you're ruining my life. Listen to Kingdom of Fraud on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Last night, a blown call changed a game. This morning, the internet lost its mind. Highlights are trending, opinions are flying, and nobody's telling you exactly what happened. That's where Sports Slice comes in.
Starting point is 00:15:37 I'm Timbo. Every episode, we're cutting through the noise, breaking down the plays, the controversies, and the stories behind the headlines. We go straight to the source, the athlete themselves. Their locker room stories, their reactions, the stuff nobody gets to hear. The laughs, the drama, the triumphs, the moments that never make the highlight real. From viral moments to historic games, from buzzer beaters to controversial calls, we break it down, give you context, and ask the questions everybody wants answered.
Starting point is 00:16:03 SportsLice brings you closer to the action with stories told by the people who live them. Listen to SportsSlic on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more, follow Timbo Slices Life 12 and the TikTok podcast. network on TikTok. Okay, let's take out the first year of Josh Allen, rookie years, mostly don't look like Jaden Daniels. Sure. He has become a much more efficient quarterback.
Starting point is 00:16:26 So is that film study? Is that growing up? Is that weapons? There is no question that today, toe to toe with Mahomes in a big spot, I don't think anybody's better. I trust them both. I love Josh. Four years ago, Red zone, I didn't trust him.
Starting point is 00:16:44 So how has he eliminated those? Is it film study or maturity? You tell me. I think it's a little bit of both. Maturity plays a huge factor into it. I think the reason he's been in some of those great situations this year, let's not forget his offensive coordinator Joe Brady's getting head coaching interview, interviews for a reason and opportunities for a reason.
Starting point is 00:17:04 Career low in interceptions, I think he's got six. So you eliminate the sacks. I think they're doing the best they have in his career there with eliminating sacks and least amount of sacks taken, you factor those things in, and it was never a concern, can he make the big play? We know he can do it.
Starting point is 00:17:22 Does he have the arm strength? Are you kidding me? He's got all those things in spades. It was, okay, how do we eliminate these negative plays? And that's where they've kind of cracked the code, I think, with this particular team. And roster for roster, I don't know if this is the best roster he's played on, right?
Starting point is 00:17:37 Like, he's had some better playmakers at times that he does right now, but these guys seem to gel. just like Mahomes. These guys seem to gel and they're going to figure it up. Exactly. So it's like they're leaning on the run game and it's not, we have to eliminate every single negative play. You can no longer make mistakes. Well, you can't play like that. It's unrealistic and
Starting point is 00:17:56 that's not fair to put a quarterback in a situation like that. So what have they done? They just cut them in half, right? Instead of throwing 12 picks, you throw six, awesome. I can win with that because that's about three or four more touchdowns, a few more field goals, a couple more wins and everybody's feeling a whole lot better about everything. And that's where he finds himself because of the coordinator, because of the run game, because of his maturity. So many factors go into that, but it's just like Lamar, right?
Starting point is 00:18:23 And it's one of the hardest things and maybe one of the most unfair things in sports. But if you don't win this one, nobody's going to care. Right? Like you've got to beat the Chiefs on the road, in the playoffs. The Chiefs are 3-0 against these guys in the playoffs, right? So it all comes down to today, or this weekend, excuse me. So I have tried to defend. I always, whenever my people hated the Lakers that weren't Laker fans.
Starting point is 00:18:52 And whenever they'd complain and say it's the refs, I always ask two questions. How many free throws did you miss and how many turnovers? And if the number's like 16, I'm like, and you want a perfect game from the officials, right? If you miss nine free throws and have nine turnovers, I don't want to hear about the guy in the striped shirt. So I generally believe, you know, I think the Texans had the worst special teams day a playoff team has ever had. You're not going to win the game. I defend the officials. I think officiating today is hard because athletes are bigger, faster, and the cameras catch every.
Starting point is 00:19:27 You can literally see under the pile now. First Super Bowl, they had two cameras. Now they have 50. Your takeaway on the assertion, Kansas City is getting breaks. can you go back and look at some of the games that they've had in pivotal moments, whether it's Super Bowls or whatever, oh, that should have been a hold. But I can find 100 games from this exact season that we just experienced. Every game I called this year, there were five or six calls where you're like,
Starting point is 00:19:52 oh, I could have gone this way or no, I probably wouldn't have called that one. That's always going to happen. That one, the one at the end, you know, Patrick Mahomes, to his credit, called out his own flop. Like, I appreciated that on the sideline. This one, though, if you're going to run around here and make moves and try and make guys miss and not get out of bounds, and then at the last second kind of hit the deck, that one was like, we're pushing it a little too much. Because you're expecting a lot from the defense to be able to just immediately pause, hit the pause button and stop everything.
Starting point is 00:20:23 So that one was a little much for me, you know, finding a way because of all the media coverage and the angles of these cameras. and you got to help those guys out. If you're going to expedite stuff from New York, then you know, you got to tell them what the frame by frame says. You got to help them out. So it's, that one was rough.
Starting point is 00:20:46 That's a tough flop right there on the side. I said he called it out, so I appreciate it. But yes, there's more plays that decide the game than just the penalties, and there's always going to be the back and forth of, he should have called that. No, he shouldn't have called that. So your experience, you had Rex.
Starting point is 00:21:02 who was almost, I said this when you were a jet and I was at the other place, he was almost anti-offensive times. It would drive me nuts. Necessary evil. Right. But you also had various coaches. You know, Pete was a defensive guy, but you had good coordinators. What is the advantage?
Starting point is 00:21:17 There's obvious stuff that a guy like me can say. Give me the advantage in your career of having an offensive head coach. If there's one thing you said, you know, it is a little different. They do add something. No, I think, listen, you've got to be the head coach of the team. matter what. And you got to be able to reach both sides of the ball. And really all three sides of the ball, including special teams. You got to be able to talk to those guys and it has to resonate with him. You know, Dan Campbell is more of an offensive guy than a defensive guy, but he's got
Starting point is 00:21:45 the whole team's attention. Andy Reid, offensive guy, but he's got the whole team's attention. So whether it's an offensive or a defensive coach, you've got to be able to speak to everybody on the roster and coach all 53, 60 plus, you know, all the guys in the offseason. There's got to be that, the advantage to having somebody who's an offensive guy is just obviously seeing it the same way that you do, you know, especially when they're from your same tree or, you know, if you're a West Coast offense guy, the way I grew up, being with somebody like Coach Schottenheimer who had good experience and affiliation with offenses like that really helped me. So after my rookie year, when him and Coach Steve Sarkisian sit down, my former college offense coordinator at USC, and hey,
Starting point is 00:22:29 What is Mark like? Let's talk your playbook from college. Let's collaborate on some of this stuff because I need to get through to my guy. And it's tailoring his thoughts and his beliefs to what I know and I'm used to. Those things are very important. And the best ones, the ones that have success are able to resonate with their quarterback, get him to play a collaborative brand of football. And that's it.
Starting point is 00:22:52 Once you get the quarterback right, I know it sounds like a broken record up here sometimes. But you get the quarterback right, a lot of things look better. Look at Josh Allen. Look at all these other teams. Look at Patrick Mahomes. I mean, get that position right, and you'll be just fine. Okay, I'm going to take a break. I want to talk about Eagles commanders.
Starting point is 00:23:08 You've got tape and a couple of Jayden Daniels pieces of video. He's the best rookie I've ever seen. I said, Andrew Luck, I thought was the best rookie, but you did get some downside. He was a very aggressive thrower, sometimes into coverage. Jaden, I get a lot of this. I don't get a lot of downside, so we're going to talk about that. He is special. Live and outlay, it's the herd.
Starting point is 00:23:29 Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific. Hey, it's Steve Kavino. And I'm Rich Davis. And together we're Kavino and Rich on Fox Sports Radio. Starting point is 00:23:49 Life, sports, relationships, what's going on in the world? We have a lot of fun talking about the stories behind the stories in the world of sports and pop culture. Stories that, well, other shows don't seem to have the time to discuss. And the fact that we've been friends for the last 20 years and still work together, I mean, that says something, right? So check us out. We like to get you involved, too. Take your phone calls, chop it up, as they say.

But with two kings from entirely different worlds, just how long can their empire survive? The largest tax investigation in American history. You need to tell me what you know. Is somebody coming after me? Jacob told Levan, you're ruining my life.
Starting point is 00:27:42 Listen to Kingdom of Fraud on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Learn about the Eagles over the Rams. Let's just start with that kind of vague question, but like, what do we learn? Well, listen, the Eagles rushed for 200 yards. The weather was a huge factor, I think. The Rams, you know, three guys that they really lean on, Cup was kind of up and down. Puka was hurt, fighting through it, you know, dropped a couple of balls, uncharacteristic of him, and then Kiron Williams was some big, the big fumble turnover,
Starting point is 00:28:17 you know, a couple key sacks for Stafford. and on the road like that, you can't afford that many mistakes. It's similar to what we're talking about with Josh Allen. You can't beat yourself, and the Rams started to give away the ball a little bit and found themselves in a tough spot at the end. So it tells you that the Eagles are exactly who we've seen all year. That rushing attack is real. That offense runs through one guy, and that's Sequin Barclay.
Starting point is 00:28:43 Hands down, no two ways about it. That guy's going to get his almost every game. Your only hope is to try and limit. at him. So in the two matchups, these two teams have had this year divisional opponents, they're one-on-one, and both games played out in a very similar fashion
Starting point is 00:29:00 where it's a tight ball game for three quarters, and one team just takes off in the fourth and runs away with it. The Eagles did it the first time, and Saquan, you know, went off in that game. I think they rushed for like 200 yards. Again, one of their seven games this season, including the playoffs, to rush for
Starting point is 00:29:16 200 yards. I mean, it's hard to lose a ball game. He rushed for 200 yards. It's like, you control the clock. You control the clock. You dominate the other team. Emotionally, it's like embarrassing for the other team. The defense is down. So that's a big factor.
Starting point is 00:29:28 But then in that second matchup, Jaden Daniels in this offense couldn't do anything all game for like three quarters. And then they score 22 in the fourth. So this offense is scary. Cliff Kingsbury has these guys dialed in certain spots and they go off. The running game explodes. Those guys out of the backfield explode. Jaden Daniels can just take off and run.
Starting point is 00:29:49 run at will. So I'm just so impressed with him at this position, right? Like, he's on the road in the playoffs. I know exactly what that looks, feels, and smells like. And this kid, they're asking him to do a whole lot more than hand the ball off like they asked me to do. Sure, we hit some third downs. We hit some throws down the field. We threw some touchdowns. Great. But this kid, I mean, he's all over the place. And the ball's in his hands in critical moments. And it's like, Remember that old like Staples campaign? Remember the that was easy button? Yes.
Starting point is 00:30:21 Feels like that guy can press that button whenever he wants. And he's just here the entire time. So consistent. So calm. His heart rate is like a resting heart rate when everybody else is just going through the roof. I mean, they were on the road against the one seed in Detroit. That place was going berserk. We saw Sam Darnell unravel.
Starting point is 00:30:40 I mean, this kid just was unfaced. And he just operates at a different speed. It's incredible to watch. So I'm fired up. It's a familiar opponent for these guys. I think the other huge factor, interior, offensive linemen, Sam Cosby, the right guard, he's down. And you're going against those two big guys in Philly,
Starting point is 00:31:00 in Davis and Carter. I mean, I think Carter had two sacks last week, either him or Davis had two sacks last week. Those guys are like, are you kidding me? So that center, Biotis, is going to have a lot of work there for the commanders. And that's pressure interior immediately on your quarterback. So that's going to be huge. Let's go to the film.
Starting point is 00:31:19 Jaden Daniel, six rookie quarterback to play. Let's see. Let me look at this up. On the road? Six rookie to start in a conference championship game. You were one of them. So let's look at some films. Yeah, this is what I liked about their last game
Starting point is 00:31:32 and where Cliff I think has evolved. And I think some of that, you know, Anthony Lins, their running backs coach, I think a lot of that's a big help for him, understanding different systems, knowing how to, in four-minute offense, essentially you have the lead at the end of the game. And, you know, for us, for example, contrasting two different styles, we're just going to hand the ball off.
Starting point is 00:31:52 And normally that's what you do. Occasionally, you'll take a shot. And the shot is to basically knock the team out. The commanders did it last week. And this was a huge play in the game. If you queue up the tape, they're going to show on a third and five with about four minutes left. They're up 14 points. Right.
Starting point is 00:32:09 You're thinking, run, run, run, keep the clock running. Time is more important than points. The 11th defender, that's the safety. He's your last line of defense. He's standing at like six yards from the ball. They all think this is a run. They're putting extra guys in the box. So what does Kingsbury do?
Starting point is 00:32:25 He puts in baits instead of Ertz to show him. He doesn't want to tip it off that this is going to be a pass. He uses motion, brings the tight end back, forces communication. Here goes the linebackers clapping at each other, screaming at the D-line. Hey, shift the front. We got to go from an over to an under. The offense just changed the strength of their formation. we need guys on this side to stop this run.
Starting point is 00:32:47 And look at how tight these guys are to the ball. They finally get their front shifted. And this is why you use shift in motion. It's not for fun. You're trying to get information and gain angles on these blocks and then show that it's going to be a run, show low pad level, run action, not just play action. And look at Anzolone.
Starting point is 00:33:06 Anzolone guy has to go fit up on baits right there. He doesn't think this is a pass. Are you kidding me? And you're going to throw the ball on third and five with four minutes left, time is more important than the point. So at that point, Anzolone's toast, poor guy, he's going to fit up the run, and then there goes bates behind him. He's taught to slip that linebacker, and it's basically fullback sale, an old West Coast play that Anthony Lynn knows, and clearly Cliff Kingsbury knows, and your rookie
Starting point is 00:33:34 quarterback knows how to execute that play in that situation on the road, one seed, places going bananas, and this guy has the poise and matured. and accuracy to hit that ball. He might have taken the post for a touchdown next time. I'm sure Cliff coached him up on that. I would doubt have been the ultimate knockout. But this was impressive to see a quarterback operating at that level. And then the other two clips are just more fun highlights
Starting point is 00:33:57 of how this guy beats you with a run. Let's see. So look at the designed run. We know what Zone Read is. That guy's in a bind. He doesn't know what's going on. That's essentially triple option. He could throw that ball once he leaves too.
Starting point is 00:34:07 It's like the old Lamar stuff we've seen before I've broken down on the show before. And then you get free runners, not just one, two free runners on a quarterback. Yeah, this was great. This guy goes in scrambles for a first down. I mean, Brady dropped a nugget that that is like absolute gold on TV, but he said something about this kid
Starting point is 00:34:23 when you get free runners on him, and I don't know how they calculate this stuff, shout out to them. But he's got like 300 plus rushing yards when you get a free runner on a quarterback. Are you kidding me? I mean, that's like unfair. I wish I could do that. You know what I mean? Free runners, you need an answer.
Starting point is 00:34:39 You need to throw immediately. You're not thinking the quarterback's just going to rush. So now as a defensive coordinator, it's hard enough to get one free runner. Right there they had two. I mean, you're staying up all night, all week. You're not getting sleep this week. You're just trying to find ways to get free runners on this guy and hope he makes a mistake. This guy just runs away from you on your best defense you've drawn up all day.
Starting point is 00:34:59 I mean, that is a tough thing to play against and prepare for. So it's the designed runs. It's the impromptu off-script runs when you're in a good position on defense that eliminate negative offensive plays. And the trust they have in this kid, it's incredible, man. I think their chances are higher than people think. Same here. So there's six quarterback. Storytime, let's go back into your career.
Starting point is 00:35:25 Take me to your. You're one of six quarterbacks to start. Yours was, who was the AFC championship game again? The first year was the Colts. We were up at halftime. Okay, so let me, let's start this. It's Thursday, and you're starting on the road. In the loudest stadium, we found out they were piping noise into it.
Starting point is 00:35:45 It's Peyton Manning. And tell me, were you nervous? Tell me the walk into the stadium. What was it like? I was glad we were playing indoors because it was cold. And as a SoCal, you know, rainbow sandals wearing kind of guy, those got put away around Halloween in October. So this is a different kind of deal. And he played against one of the best players ever play.
Starting point is 00:36:10 the big thing you've got to do is eliminate that. Try and not watch the offense when they're on offense. You've got to focus on you. You can't get distracted by this other stuff. And it has to be a hyper-focus and singular focus that gets you prepared for that game. I think Coach Schottenheimer, we had Kevin O'Connell at the time,
Starting point is 00:36:32 and those guys were so good at getting me ready to play in those crucial moments, especially in the playoffs. I think we had some of our best performances on offense. But that first game, we're up at halftime, and I'm a rookie in the NFL like, oh my God, we're going to the Super Bowl, baby. Like, let's keep this thing rolling.
Starting point is 00:36:47 Well, we find out from Tom Moore, who was the offensive coordinator with Peyton at the time, and Tom Moore became an assistant later for the Jets and like an advisor. So I asked him about that game just randomly, and so did Rex, and Rex was in the room talking about it. And Tom Moore said, I didn't call a single play till after halftime. He said nothing.
Starting point is 00:37:08 in the second half. He goes, Peyton did his own stuff. Really? So apparently Peyton just started dialing up everything, ran everything, no huddle in the second half, and went after it. And I mean, shoot, when you can play like that, I don't blame him for doing it. And it was just funny to hear that after the fact. And Rex was like, I knew something was different at the second. I knew you guys did something. And he's, you know, we're half laughing, half like, oh, man, you know, we had a chance. And so You know, we got conservative on offense. The difference with a Jaden Daniels and the way, you know, we attacked it, right? There's, if you trust that guy to do some stuff, you might throw the ball a little more or whatever.
Starting point is 00:37:49 Yeah. So I thought it was, it was an interesting approach. And then you had a defense. Oh, my God. So, I mean, your game plan should have been more conservative. The run game, the run defense is like third worst in the league for Washington. And they're playing against the best rushing attack, you know, but they also played against a great rushing attack last week in Detroit. But they jumped them early.
Starting point is 00:38:07 When you go up 14, it's hard to just hand the ball off, right? You've got to score some points. You're chasing the other team. So they jumped them quick, shocked them in their home stadium. Like, that was big. So, and then the other one was 2010 against Rathesberger and the Steelers. But we got down 21-3 in the first half. And that one, like, we start to climb out of the hole.
Starting point is 00:38:30 But, you know, we're playing against Paul Molo. We're playing against, I mean, Paul Molo was one of those guys you're studying during the week. And it's like, okay, I know this zone drop defender, you know, the safety, it's like a three buzz, he's got hooked to curl, whatever, like, okay, I know where this is going to be. He runs to the other side of the field and plays man to man on somebody. And I'm like, dude, what clip is this? I'm asking Shottie. I'm asking other guys that are like, dude, that's Troy being Troy.
Starting point is 00:38:55 You can't account for that. Just have an eye on him during the game. I'm like, okay, hold on. I got to do all this stuff I normally do and then just find Troy, Paul and Mollett. So that was the second go around and we didn't quite pull it out. Well, the one thing, well, we got to go. That was good. Sorry, wrong story time.
Starting point is 00:39:11 Don't be. I love Mark Sanchez Storytime. Welcome on this show every time. Hey, guys, it's us. The Jonas Brothers. I'm Joe. I'm Kevin. And I'm Nick.
