Tennessee's my dark horse. Hold on. All right. Very good. Iowa and UCLA is my dark horse. Yeah, you know, people, UCLA is funny because we see a lot of UCLA. They're on TV here out well. Yeah, you know, I mean, it's a tournament, though, so none of us know anything.

Well, they've got a veteran coach. But they have a lot of experience. They have a veteran coach that tends to matter in the tournament. And I do a mixture. I do some research and then I go with my gut. And it's guaranteed to bust every time. You can't, here's the thing. You can't overthink the room on this stuff.

No, you can't. Because we talked about a team we thought was overrated in Michigan and they're getting whacked around today. So you got to, you know, you don't overthink the room. It looks like they're... What are they doing now? They're going to turn out, okay. How are they doing?

They're up 7563 on the Colorado state. Oh, they are now. Yeah. Some competitive game. There you go. Yeah. It's the tournament's fun. I contend, especially starting tonight.

Starting tonight for the next three or four days, it's just crazy town. Yeah, it's madness. There's never as many upsets as you think, but you know for these favorite teams, it's always tight. The first weekend, there's a lot of, you know, Duke winning by four twice. There's a lot of that stuff. Well, it could be interesting because there's no real. It's a lot of parody this year. There's no real, like, great.

There's no great team. No, no, no. That's right. There is no great team. Well, and increasingly, with one and done, Villanova and Gonzaga, they don't have as many one and done guys. Jalen Sugs for Gonzaga,

but Villanova and Gonzaga are kind of doing a different way. We're going to get good high school players. They're not five-star guys, but they'll stay with us longer. Right. And that's, by the way, Villanova and Gonzaga, last seven, eight years.

there's an argument to be made in terms of winning in the tournament. Those are the best two programs in America right now. Villanova and Gonzaga, if college basketball is about winning in the tournament, and it is, the two best programs in that last seven, eight years are Villanova and Gonzaga. Yeah, I mean, but they are built for college basketball. Today, they don't have the one and done guys. So I used to cover Jay Wright years ago, 21 years before he was at UNLV as an assistant, and then Hofstra's in there, and he's got two national titles at Villanova.

joining us live. They play tomorrow. Okay, so here's what's funny. So when I think of certain coaches, when I thought of Roy Williams, I thought fast break. I love the way he run his break. When I think of I think of I think of Biggs. When I think of Jay Wright, I think of tough guards.

So you go get Colin Gillespie. His dad's a cop. Nobody offers him a scholarship. How in the world, I mean, how you find him. And by the way, Justin Moore got hurt, tore his ACL. and a lot of people backed off him. And now you got these two upperclassmen guards. And I don't think of you as a tough guy.

But you find tough guys. What are you looking for? Because when I think of Nova, I think of guards, chip on the shoulder, overlooked, end up playing in the league. They're always tough guys. Are you looking for that? Because it seems like you always have it. Definitely, Colin. We really do, man.

We look for competitive guys, you know, guys that they're talented as guards, but when you watch them play, they're not just shooting threes and getting out in transition and throwing fancy passes, but they're still rebounding, they still play in the post, they still will take it up your chest, they still defend. So we really do look at that. We look at that complete player at the guard spot that will get involved in every, every aspect of the game. You know, it's interesting.

You and Gonzaga are the two best programs last seven years in college basketball. You got a couple titles. They've been close. They don't. If I said to you, okay, Jay, guys, we're filling out their bracket. What are the two things in the tournament that you, all these years of success, give me two things that are almost always true in the tournament? You've got to defend.

You've got to be able to defend different styles of play. You can't just, you know, say I'm a good zone team or you've got to be able to adjust defensively to different styles of play. And you've got to have leadership, upper class leadership that keeps the guys focused through the tournament and enables them to understand that all the fun things that come up at the NCAA tournament are actually distractions. They're fun, and you can come back and watch the tournament any time you want when you finish playing. But while you're in it, you have to avoid those distractions. You know, the one-and-done stuff is tough. I think both Roy Williams and Shishowski, it's exhausting. I just read Mike's book.

It's a great book by Eno Connor, by the way, talks about college basketball and Duke's history. You get good players. But you're not, you and Gonzaga are generally not. Jalen Suggs an exception. You're not one-and-done programs. Are there players that you think you'd have a good shot at, but you don't think they'd fit your culture? Because you're a demand, you have a reputation.

You make guys play defense. You're a tough coach. Your practices are not easy. Is talent overrated? Do you ever look at a guy and go, you know what? He's a one-and-done or I'm not sure he works for us? Definitely, Colin. And usually we let those players make that decision for themselves.

We try to educate them on what the villainal program is about, you know, and it's about being a part of something bigger than yourself. It's about wanting to come in and improve, realize that, yes, I'm a great player, but I want to, I want to be coached. I want to get better. And I want to be a part of a team. So we explain that to them, and a lot of guys that are really talented that know that they need a platform to kind of show what they can do to get to the league as fast as possible, which is

a good thing. There's nothing wrong with that. That this might not be the best place for them. Boy, I'd argue you guys are, as I tell Mark Few of this all the time, you are the platform. It's nothing against anybody else. But to me, Villanova and Gonzaga, college basketball, there's three weeks of the sport that feel like 70% of the sport.

I don't know. If I had a kid that was a talented, which will never happen. But I would, I like the Gonzaga, Villanova. Model. By the way, so Shishvsky's leaving, Coach K is leaving. You've had some battles with him through the years. What are you going to remember about him? I think the class with which he's been an incredible winner, and he's done it with class.

The other thing, Colin, is he was my entree to USA basketball. I watched him for maybe 12 years as a part of USA Basketball, coach NBA players completely differently than he coaches college players. And so his adaptability is incredible. Yeah. And I've seen him win World Cup, World Cups, Olympics, and NCAA championships. And he's done it differently with each group. And that's what's so impressive to me that he's got the ability to coach at every level

and adapt to every kind of player. By the way, do you ever recruit international players much? Gonzaga goes over there. It's always been highly skilled. I think their players are getting better and tougher. I think our players are getting more skilled. Our bigs can shoot. McHale Bridges, wing guys now are shooters.

When you look at the global talent pool that you recruit from and you see, what is it like these days? What's it like going forward? You're absolutely right, Colin. the international game has actually influenced the American game and made the bigger guys in the American game more skilled. Last summer, when we picked our Olympic team, when we were going through all the top centers in the NBA, most all of the top centers in the NBA are international players. So that has made a great impact.

For us, because we're in Philadelphia and we're so close to D.C., New York, Boston, Philly, Jersey. There's so many players within a three-hour radius of us, they're falling out of trees. They're everywhere. Right. We don't really have to go internationally or go anywhere because there's such a great talent pool in our local area.

By the way, he was just AP coach of the decade, Jay Wright, Villanova basketball head coach. Okay. So you're going to this tournament. You'll favor in the first round. Do you literally tonight sleep well? are you just like, oh boy, first round, this is brutal. Do you sleep well tonight?

No, I don't come. And because I coached at Hofstra University, I remember how good those teams are. And I know if Delaware is considered a mid-major, when you're a junior or a senior at a mid-major, you're better than freshmen or sophomores at the high major. And this team has really experienced this Delaware team, really talented. So I'm not sleeping, buddy. I'm very concerned about that. Okay, finally, best team you either saw live or on tape.

Now, I'm going to tell you right now, Tennessee is my dark horse to win it all. They can go four guards. Now, they're way too young. But they beat a good, I saw Kentucky Hammer, Kansas. They beat them twice. And I say, you know, they're a dark horse. They're a three-seed. None of you guys are dark horses.

But Tennessee is the best. I look at them, and I'm like, like I would not want to play Tennessee, because I think they're as good as half the ones. What's the best team? And you could use Villanova if you want. You either saw in film or you played this year. We played Baylor. Oh, yeah.

They handled us pretty well. We played out their place, an incredible atmosphere. Now, they lost their big guy. I'm not sure if they got him back or not. Without him, they're a little different, but they're still an incredibly talented. to team offensively and defensively as good as good as they get. And then Gonzaga, I watched them, Mark and I are good friends. They have all the pieces and they have length.

They have great offensive explosiveness. And their length defensively can be stifling. And I don't think they get enough credit for their defense. So I would say those two teams. All right, good luck. You've won 72% of your games in Villanova. 16 NCAA tournament appearances. It's great seeing.

You've aged very gracefully. One of us has. You've aged very... You too, my man. They should put up a picture of you and I when we were in Vegas together next to this shot. Not good. Not good for me.

Great seeing you. You too, buddy. Take care of coffee. All right. Yeah, he was a coach of the decade. You know, it's funny. He said defense. Baylor last year, their defense shut down.

Gonzaga. Yes. So his point is, I always think offense. I like offense. But you get better shoe deals with shooters. Get better shoe deals than defenders. But in this tournament, Baylor's defense last year shut Gonzaga down in the championship game.

And his defense shut down. I think it was Michigan in one of the championship games. Shut them down. Well, the NBA, if you have, you know, incredible scores because of the three-point shot, it separates teams so wildly. Like, the defense isn't the emphasis there. It's a different game. I knew him when he was an assistant.

You know, you can tell. So I was a sportscaster in Vegas. So how old were you? 23. 23? 35 years ago. I knew Jay Wright. He was a young coach.

He looked like George Clooney. He was, but the thing I liked about him, you know, first of all, he was always a meticulously dressed, great-looking guy. I think he was newly married. And he was so humble. Like, you know, in Vegas, good looking, well compensated, would be cocky, right? Like the city's got an edge, right?

He was the most graceful and humble guy, and it was just like, oh, that guy's going to be a winner in life. You can just, you know how you meet somebody and you're like, that guy is going to be a rock star. And you just knew it. And he was totally, I mean, he would tell me stuff. You know, I would just like, hey, can this guy get play? Can this guy? He was, you know, integrity. He would tell you could play.

And it's really cool to see people you meet in your early 20s. and he's just aged really gracefully. I mean, it's pretty remarkable. Villanova's got two titles since 2016. So their Gonzaga east, Gonzaga just hasn't gotten over the edge. I think it's their year. Yeah, well, in Villanova is a different program.

When I think Gonzaga, I think offense. But I think Villanova, I think toughness, defense. So his point is defense wins, he wins that argument. Because Gonzaga's always got, Gonzaga's offense is the best over the last 10 years in college basketball. They just score. That's what they do. Don't always make the stops.

Tom, obviously, publicly unretired on Sunday night, and Gronk's been working out regularly at the team's training facility this off-season. I imagine that he's going to come back.

It feels like the final year. You're getting Gronk for the playoffs. Right. Okay. So you're bringing in Russell, Gage. Okay, so you got... Russell Gage, you have Cameron Brate. Chris Godwin, Cameron Brate, what you're bringing Gronk in for is the big games

down the stretch. You're not bringing Gronk in for the preseason. And by the way, he's going to be your third down. Right. Six minutes to go in the game. I need a first down. That's why he's great because you don't need him with this offense. You don't need him for a lot of the things you're good enough offensively.

You don't need a thousand yards out of Grom. If you got 375 and they all came in the fourth quarter of big games, he's worth the money. Last year, he played 12 games, 55 receptions, 8202 yards, and six touchdowns. That is, that is, if you could get 90% of that, that's exactly what Gronk is at this point. They're loaded. Mike Evans are bringing back Chris Gobwin. As you mentioned, Russell Gage. Brady is apparently recruiting Julio Jones, and you also have Cameron Bray. So former Net Spencer Dinwiddie, who has been incredible since he's joined.

DeMavs. They've been incredible. Yes. Return to Brooklyn and after Kevin Durant hit a go-ahead three with 10 seconds left. Oh boy. What do you do? This happened. Five, four, screen right by Kleba. Back to his left. Here's the double.

Right to Dinwiddie for three. It's good. It's good. He did it again. Second consecutive game for Spencer Dinwiddie. This time with no time. Left on the clock. And the Mavericks have overcome a four.

14. Fourth quarter deficit to beat the Brooklyn Nets. 113 to 111 and what a return to Brooklyn for Spencer Dinwiddie. Wow. What a dime from Luca also. Second straight game where Lucas found Spencer Dinwiddie for the game winner. You know, against the Celtics was 11 seconds. We said this a couple days ago. Dallas is going to knock somebody off.

I don't think they're good enough to knock Phoenix off, but they could be a handful for Golden State. Well, they're tied for the fourth seed. Steph is also injured now as well. So you got to keep that in mind. They're tied for the fourth seed with the Jazz. How long Steph out? I think it's indefinitely right now. Oh, boy.

They're hoping to have him back, obviously, but they have to wait and see. When Spencer's 12 games with the Mavericks, their 10 and 2, or the team record is 10 and 2. He's averaging 18 points a game, 50% field goal percentage, 43% from 3.

And Luca is 33.6 points per game, the highest in the NBA since February 1st. The Nets fall to 8th in the east at 36 and 34. Kyrie obviously did not play because that's a home game after scoring 60 in Orlando. So they are 14 and 19 at home, 22 and 15 on the road are the Nets. But really, that's always fun. Those highlights, those moments where everybody gets to go crazy and he's returning back to the city. And it's just, it's awesome.

But the maps are a fun watch. So you've been mentioning this all day. Former Braves first baseman, Freddie Freeman, has agreed to a C. year $162 million deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Freeman led the Braves to their first World Series since 1995 and won the NL MVP in

2020. I think he's from California. He's a SoCal kid, I think. He has finished top 10 and MVP voting six times in his career. So the projected Dodgers batting order, Mookie Betts. Look at this. Look at this thing. Justin. Trey Turner, Freddie Freeman, Justin Turner,

Max Muncie, Will Smith, Chris Taylor, Cody Bellinger, and A.J. Pollitt. The only batting order that compares to this, and it doesn't, is the 75 Reds that went, Rose Griffey, Morgan, Bench, Foster, Perez, Dreson, Concepcion, Geronimo, and a pitcher. You don't want to mess with me on 70s trivia. I'm ringman. You don't want, I can tell you the averages. You don't want to go there against me.

But this is better. This has more power on the back end. So that was the best batting order back in 1975. they were good, and then they brought George Foster in, who was everybody's good. Long story, but that was the best batting order in my life. This is better because it has more power six through nine. That was pretty impressive.

Freeman becomes the fourth former MVP on the Dodgers. Mookie Betts, Clayton Kershaw, Cody Bellinger. It's incredible. You know what they're doing is they're saying, listen, this Rams won a Super Bowl. Yeah, this is the standard in Los Angeles. standard in Los Angeles. And, you know, somebody said the other day they asked me off the air, a friend there said, somebody in our business said, you know, L.A. has got, I mean, if you go to New York

right now, who are the five biggest sports stars in New York? Durant one, Kyrie two, Aaron Judge three, there isn't a fourth. There literally isn't a fourth. We have 27. Our 27th is like Paul George. I mean, seriously, that's that now we have, now we have Freeman. He's probably 25. Well, I mean, this is what happens when you have, and I really start with the Lakers. But I don't know. There's two things here. One, Silicon Valley has so enriched the state of California economically that we're just, the teams are making a fortune now.

The second thing is that sports becomes more entertainment, players are like, why go to New York? I'll just go, I'll get better weather. I'm going to pay taxes and both. I'll get the weather and Hollywood. because more than any time in our life, all these athletes now have production companies, music studios, just come to L.A.

It's insane. If you start listing the best athletes... We haven't even mentioned USC. Has Lincoln Riley, and Caleb Williams would be the number one pick in two years, the quarterback. By the way, I talked to USC when they hired Lincoln Riley before, and Mike Bowen, the athletic director told me.

He said, we had to go big. Yes. He had to get the top young offensive coach. This is not Norman, Oklahoma. You're battling. You haven't even mentioned LeBron James. Afterthought. That's crazy.

Joy with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping back. The Heard Lye News. Ryan looked at me when I did that Cincinnati Reds batting order. Not even with amazement, with curiosity if I had a childhood. He was looking at me as if, did you? you, why would you know that? I collected baseball cards.

Yeah, I mean, but like you still remember that. Backup catcher to Johnny Bench was Bill Plummer. The starting lineup was Don Cullet, Jack Billingham, Fred Norman, Clay Carroll, Raleigh Eastwick was the bullpen. I can tell you the whole team. I can tell where their hometowns are. Yeah, Jack Billingham was 43, lanky right-hander, submarine pitcher couldn't hit. Fred Norman, little left-hander, breaking ball stuff. I can do Dodgers, too, if you want, and Braves and Giants. I had no life as a child. The problem is we have to get to break. I had no life as a child. Absolutely no life.

would I take going forward Baker Mayfield or the other quarterback right so we'll call it shake I shake it before you bake it all right Kirk Cousins are Baker Mayfield?

Kirk Cousins, three of the last four years, he's passed for 4,000 yards and 30 touchdowns. He is really, really productive, and now he gets an offensive coach. So actually for a year or two, he's probably a buy. His numbers will go up. They have really good offensive pieces. Minnesota is my lock to double their wins this year in the entire league. Houston's my second, depending on what they get at quarterback. But Kirk Cousins, yeah.

Derek Carr, Baker Mayfield. Yeah, Derek Carr's the most underrated quarterback in the league. the only quarterback to rank in the top five in completion percentage and passing yards last year. You get the same guy every year. And again, you talk about a guy that's overcome chaos. Last year, it was a tire fire the whole season in Vegas. Daniel Jones or Baker Mayfield? Daniel Jones has hit his ceiling and it's not pretty. Baker will be healthy in September and October for the Browns or somebody. Baker's got a better arm. he's not as big or doesn't run quite as well,

but Baker throws a better football than Daniel Jones. Justin Fields or Baker Mayfield? Well, I think Justin Fields has, he's bigger, stronger, more athletic. He's got greater tools. Doesn't mean it'll work. But in terms of if you sit next to him side by side, Justin Fields in a hotel lobby, you would draft him. He's just bigger, stronger, more athletic.

He's got a really lively arm. He's an interesting one. Jared Goff or Baker Mayfield? Jared Goff. Again, I don't get a lot of drama. Yeah. He's been to a Super Bowl. He's made the Pro Bowl twice, and he's coachable.

Now, there's limitations with him. I always said this. Jared Goff is Matt Ryan with a little better long arm. He can throw the deep ball a little better than Matt. But he's a little bit of a Matt Ryan comp. If you give him pieces, he'll get the ball there. You know, he's not the most, he's very quiet. I don't know if he galvanizes people.

You talk about no drama. He was invisible in Los Angeles. Yeah. Ryan's Hannah-Hillerbaker, field. I'd probably go Tannahill. He's a bigger, stronger athlete who moves well. Again, really coachable, no drama, limitations. But I, you know, again, for my personality, Ryan's not going to push back. He'll be good at the press conferences. He's an adult. Tua. I'd probably go Baker. I'm not a Tua guy. I just, I think Baker has a better arm. And frankly, if you go look at the numbers,

Baker has been healthier. Baker has been, uh, Baker's got 13 plus starts and four seasons. And So with Tua, I don't get the big arm. I don't get the mobility. I don't get the health. So I'd take Baker. Mitchell Trubisky or Baker Mayfield. It's a close call, but I take Trubisky again. Coachability, he is way more athletic.

Now, I think Baker's got a livelier arm. But Trubisky, everybody I know that knows Trubisky loves him. Totally likable, hardworking, first into the locker room, last out. Athletes love him. was talking about him two days ago. He's like, if you don't understand how athletic this dude is, like you don't get it. Matt Ryan or Baker Mayfield? Matt Ryan, because he's a four-time pro bowler, but Matt's expensive now.

And Matt's better. There's no question, Matt's better. It's just you're getting to a point with Matt. I think Matt will shut it down. If he goes to a, if they trade him to a team he doesn't like, he'll play for a year and shut it down. He's very intense, not a lot of drama. Just, I think, I think it's, I think unless, he takes a severe pay cut, I think the end's near.

Trey Lance or Baker Mayfield. Trey Lance is much better physical tools. Big, strong. Again, falls into the likeability thing like Trabisky. He's very quarterback. Yeah, people like him. Athletic moves well. Doesn't necessarily throw a pretty ball, but he drives it.

He can drive it down the field. He's got a good arm. It's not as pretty an arm as a lot of the young quarterback talents. but he's just you would go with a first of all right now next three years you're not paying him anything so he's free a rookie quarterback or baker oh baker it's a bad class malique willis has talent but i have no idea at least with baker i know what i'm getting Kenny picket i think it's lower ceiling so i think they're both um i'm not going to get a lot of drama with either right these these are not headline guys uh but i i would say with baker i do get a feisty guy

who moves okay. Do not take his last five games last year as his true arm. He was falling apart. So I'd take Baker. Deshawn Watson or Baker-Mayfield. Listen, he's got baggage, but he's elite. I'd take Deshaun. He's an elite player.

You know, we talked about this earlier. That's my shaken bake list. I took him over Tua. Yeah, I wouldn't. I'm so out on Baker, though. You are totally out. Yeah. I have, strangely, I was very out early.

I've kind of come around. I think people are picking on him a little bit. Well, that's a bad word. They're not picking on him. He's made his own bad. Picking on the guy that said Mary Kay Cabot made up lies about him to put food on her table. Yeah, no, he's exhausting. He is exhaught.

We've all had friends like this. I mean, I have. You have a girlfriend that's exhausting. No, I don't. Not one. I do not have exhausting people in my life. Did you just get out? I used to when I was younger.

I have no, I have one nerve. And if you get on it, you're gone. One nerve left. Well, what do you mean one nerve? I have one nerve. Like when you get on my nerves, all my nerves are shot. I've got one. Don't get on it.

You prune your tree regularly. I'm very pruned tree. Yeah, same way. I can't do it. I don't have the... It literally drains my ability to do anything. Like, I'm tired. I've ditched a friend because he was a bad tipper.

Well, you should. I mean, bad tippers should be sensed. Bad tipper. I refuse. To live in an island with each other. The worst kind of person. Bad tippers. It's a great thing to do when you're on a new date.

Is just a... just go ahead and take a little peek. I don't even do it. I let my wife do it now. Well, yeah, but I'm saying like when you first go on a date with someone, they're bad tippers. No need for a second date. You guys have done that? I mean, not that I remember because I would never go out with them again. Wow.

Isn't that a funny thing? The guys probably think they're frugal. It's so turn off for women. You know, another thing? By the way. I mean, that's not being frugal. That's being a bad person. I say this before.

Never say this on a date with a beautiful woman. I love. What kind of music you like? Oh, I love fish. Total turnover. What? Three beautiful women I know. I got into this conversation once.

And I mentioned the band. They were like, oh, God, does he shower? What's his hygiene like? Can't say you like the concert. Around guys, you can say you go to fish concerts. Do not say that around beautiful women. Yeah, and make sure that you tip. And no fish concerts and tip well.

Or you're done. It's a non-star. We are very judgmental today. And that's how I'm ending today's show. And I have no guilt. You cannot say you go to fish concerts. Can't? It's over.
