Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year.
Starting point is 00:00:52 Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care what I'm saying. Yep, that's me, Cliver Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, my basketball and college football journey, or my career in sports media. Well, now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifers Show.
Starting point is 00:01:21 This is a place for raw, unfilled conversations with athletes, creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard, but celebrated. So let's get to it. Listen to the Clifford show on the I Heart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more behind the scenes, follow at Clifford and at TikTok's podcast network on TikTok. On the Look Back at it podcast.
Starting point is 00:01:41 From 1979, that was a big moment for me. 84's big to me. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a year, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. With our friends, fellow comedians,
Starting point is 00:01:54 and favorite authors. Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s. 84 was a wild year. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Thanks for listening to The Heard podcast. Be sure to catch us live every weekday from 12 to 3 Eastern, 9 to noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and FS1. Find your local station for the herd at Fox Sports Radio.com or stream us live every day on the iHeartRadio app by searching Herd. You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Well, we get him about once a year, and it's always fascinating.
Starting point is 00:02:33 Gotham Chopra is an author and a four-time sports Emmy Award winner, a filmmaker. He co-founded the religion of sports with Tom Brady and Michael Strayhan. Get to that in a second. But he's been the director and the executive producer of Tom versus Time, which was fascinating. Steph Curry v. The Game, Man in the Arena, Kobe Bryant, the Muse. Now he's got a Draymond Green documentary. So let's start with this. It's storytelling.
Starting point is 00:03:00 I've said this before. I'm in radio. Radio storytelling. Sure. Documentary. Storyelling. So Draymond Green's story, a lot of stars, you know, like the Manning family. You know, dad played in the NFL.
Starting point is 00:03:13 Brothers great. This great. Draymond's story is very, very different. So how did you approach it? Yeah, Draymond's story is different, but at the same time it's archetypal, right? He's the guy who shouldn't be here. That's always been his story. If you go back to high school, he's the guy who's sort of struggled to get into a big time program, got into Michigan State,
Starting point is 00:03:31 but then, you know, he dropped, or he didn't even drop in the draft. He wasn't highly thought of coming out of Michigan State. So when he got into the league, he was discounted. He was too fat, too slow, too, just not the right guy. He couldn't shoot. He didn't have an offensive game. So he's already, he's always carried that edge. Yeah, he's the opposite of the manning.
Starting point is 00:03:53 But by the way, he has a lot in common with time. Brady, who was the guy who dropped in the draft. You know, he wasn't supposed to be there. But like you said, great storytelling is anchored in great characters. And Raymond's put everything in her son. He's a lot of similarities with LeBron James, who he's close to. So his mom really was the one who kept him on the path. All those things growing up in Saginaw, you know, all the typical dangers that he could
Starting point is 00:04:22 have fallen into with gangs and drugs and violence and stuff. like that. His mom was primarily the person who kept him on the path. And, you know, he says that quite openly. He's here because of her. He's had his battles with Steve Kerr. Do you, I mean, you have Steve, I imagine, talks about that. I mean, they've had their battles. Yeah. I mean, Dramon speaks his mind. I mean, you know, you know, through his podcast, we're all seeing it. But, you know, he's always been that. So we talked to Tom as Tom iso. We talked to us. Steve Kerr, you know, Dremont doesn't back down. He's a very, but he also listens. He does listen. And so he's not afraid to speak his mind, but he's also, I mean, especially with someone like
Starting point is 00:05:07 Steve Kerr, has a lot of credibility. You know, I think I would say if you talk to both of them, they have a lot of respect for each other because there's a lot of knowledge and wisdom and self-awareness there. And so this project was that. It was Draymond saying, hey, I've used this chip on my shoulder to get to a certain point in my career. It's been really successful, right? He had already been to four, or won four finals, but, or been, sorry, to four finals. But I need something different. I need something, he was 10 years into his career. I need something new to get to the next level. So that was the origins of this project, was Draymond saying, hey, you know, this has served me well, this sort of like guy who has the chip on his shoulder, who's, you know, always him against the world.
Starting point is 00:05:57 But 10 years in, multiple all-stars, multiple finals, all of that, I feel like I need something new. I've always been a defender, although he certainly doesn't need defense of Steph Curry. I think it's very hard to be a superstar in America and selfless. Vanity and ego and pride, it's almost understandable. In fact, it's completely. understandable when you're on the face of for the league. Curry and Dremont's relationship. I know about the Splash Brothers.
Starting point is 00:06:29 I've heard Kerr and Curry. What is Steph and Dremont's relationship like? I mean, they're brothers. You know, I've been fortunate enough to work with both. And I remember, you know, years ago when I was working with Steph was when there was like that, that blow up on the bench between Dramon and KD. You know, that became a big thing. but from what I understand from talking to Steph,
Starting point is 00:06:52 the next day Steph was there with Draymond. Like, you know, they're so opposite in many ways, like, you know, in terms of their persona and how they deal with things. How they were raised? But they are really tight. Like, I think they complement, the same way they complement each other on the court,
Starting point is 00:07:08 I think they complement each other off the court. And I would give equal credit, although Steph will go down as, you know, one of the top players in the history of the game, probably the greatest shooter in the history of the game, but I don't know that they have this type of sustained success without both of those guys. Because I think, you know, as great as Steph is, he's so quiet.
Starting point is 00:07:28 You know, he doesn't, whereas Dremont's the opposite, right? Like, and I think across not only a long season, but now eight years, you know, six finals in eight years, you need that type of like ebb and flow, that type of, you know, positive negative to have that type of sustained success. Yeah, I always thought Draymond was the bouncer at the bar at the nightclub. You need a tough guy. He protects Wayne Gretzky.
Starting point is 00:07:52 He protects Steph Curry. It's interesting. You were a Celtic fan. And so when you watched the finals, I had picked the Warriors in six. But after three games, I said, boy, if Robert Williams remains healthy, this is a yield sign at the rim. They can't score down low. What was your takeaway on watching your team who had momentum in this? series, let it slip away.
Starting point is 00:08:18 Did you get more, were you mad at your team or more respectful of Golden State? Respectful. I mean, you can see it. And the longer that series went on, I was like, oh, yeah, these guys have been there. A lot. I went to game one, right, and was amazing how the Celtics came back, and they just played out of their minds, and the bench played. And you would have thought, like, as a Celtic fan, you were like, oh, man, like, wow,
Starting point is 00:08:38 like, we have a real shot here. The Warriors weren't phased. They weren't phased after three games when they were down to one. They weren't phased apparently in the fourth quarter when the Celtics were up by five of game four with like seven minutes to go. That's what, you know, wisdom. Look, those teams are evenly matched. I think, you know, it's fair to say. But they had Draymond Green and Steve Kerr and Clay Thompson and Steph Curry.
Starting point is 00:09:05 And that just over a seven game series, you know, it kicks in. I feel really good about the Celtics going into negative. We've seen this narrative play out over and over. I grew up as Celtics fan. So yeah, I saw this happen with, you know, the pistons against the Celtics. I saw it, you know, I saw it with the Bulls against the pistons. This happens. And so hopefully, you know, some nice signings in the last few days.
Starting point is 00:09:28 Yeah. Malcolm Brogden's a good get for you guys. So, you know, you've worked with, the Brady thing is interesting is that, you know, Tom is always so driven, as you well know. But I have found that what happens with very driven people, they can take. that drive in football and they can move it to something. And Tom is, I think, going to move it very quickly, pivot to his clothing brand and business. You can see him doing it in the last post-Atlanta Super Bowl.
Starting point is 00:09:58 He's become much more commercially viable and commercially comfortable. And so last year, according to reports, he was ready to hang her up. I mean, if the Miami thing would have worked, he would have hang it up. And that's a weird space. So I've had Tom driven and then Tom going to hang it up. then he had to say, okay, my bad, I'm going to come back in. And I think that's tougher. I think it's tough to kind, because I think of this stuff's all mental.
Starting point is 00:10:24 I know at some point in my life, I will be like, I'm going to be active. I'm just going to be active golfing and not watching sports. I don't know, you know Tom so well. It does feel like it's the last year, obviously, but it does feel a little different. Do you expect anything different? I mean, is it obvious? I felt like it's sort of obvious the last five years. obviously this is going to be his last season, but here we go.
Starting point is 00:10:49 Look, Tom loves it. It's in his blood. And yes, there's a lot of stuff going on off the field. A lot now for him. He's set up a lot of stuff. But, I mean, I think this is genuine. He's going back. It's unfinished.
Starting point is 00:11:01 He was pretty close last season. And, you know, that game against the Rams. And I just, I still think it's inside of him. And look, this goes back. You said it. Get to a certain point in your career. It's, he knows, he's got the physical, stuff dialed in with his TV 12, with his nutrition, this movie, we all know about it now.
Starting point is 00:11:20 It's like the mental and emotional aspect. It's still, he hasn't resolved that. And I think it's still inside of him. Yes, there's a lot of stuff going on. But, you know, he says it himself. Just doesn't, he's still a competitor. There's still unfinished business. And, you know, by the way, this goes back to the Draymond stuff. Like, athletes always say you get to a certain point in your career. Physically, you've figured it out. You know. know how to take care of your body, you know how to, you know, spend your off seasons, all of that sort of stuff, staying in shape because you have to stay in shape. It's mentally and emotionally, how do you get there? Tom's, again, he's sort of a master at it. Someone like, Draymond's like,
Starting point is 00:11:58 I, Draymond said to me, because, you know, we've known each other for a couple of years, work together. He said, you know, people keep telling me I need to learn how to meditate. He's like, I don't really know what that means. I was like, Draymond, I'll hook you up. I know how to like, you know, I know somebody I can introduce you to. And that's kind of how that project started. By the way, Tom's been a meditator. He has a mindfulness practice for years. So that's people don't talk about it, but that's as a big part of his success as his, you know,
Starting point is 00:12:27 TB12 or the smoothies or the avocado ice cream that people love to have fun with. It's that mindfulness. It's sort of taking care of yourself mentally emotionally, not just physically that optimizes performance across the long period of time. You have a co-founder of a sports media company, a religion of sports with Brady and Michael Strayhan. Are they meddling owners? How do you decide? Like, how will you decide?
Starting point is 00:12:51 Obviously, people are pitching you things constantly. Yeah. What is it to you, Gotham, that you get the it, that you get a project and you, Michael and Tom go, that's the one we're doing? Great characters. You know, it really has to be a great character. I mean, we're living in a really fascinating time of content
Starting point is 00:13:10 and there's all these different streamers and platforms and all of that sort of stuff. It's a very cluttered space. Like, how do you, you can produce a lot of content, but what's going to cut through? What's going to, so a lot of that just comes with characters. Like, who are compelling? What are they talking about? I'm a huge sports fan, as you know. So, but the type of storytelling we do is bigger than sports.
Starting point is 00:13:31 This has to reach an audience that doesn't, you know, my favorite compliment all the time is like, oh, man, I don't really love football. I don't know if I'm a big, you know, Patriots fan or Bucks fan now. But I watch that Tom versus Time or Man in the Arena and I'm now want to share that with my kids. This is bigger than football. And that's the thing with Draymond.
Starting point is 00:13:51 It's actually about mental health. It's about, you know, how do we find this place in ourselves that optimizes performance? That's what Draymond's talking about. It just so happens. He's a basketball player. But for us, like we're always looking for that story that's bigger than sports. Was there a moment you were caught off guard or surprised with Draymond? I mean, like right from the start, big alpha athlete and his willingness to suddenly go on camera and meditate to learn about Reiki and energy.
Starting point is 00:14:21 I mean, it's pretty new age stuff in the show the sessions. Draymond, you know, comes from Saginaw, Michigan. He's like the alpha guy. He's a tough guy. But his willingness to sort of engage, so right from the start, like, it's one thing to talk about it. It's another thing like, hey, man, we want to film this. He was like, okay, cool. You know, I think he feels like, Draymond's super smart guy.
Starting point is 00:14:43 Like, oh, I can be an evangelist. I can be an ambassador. Other guys need to do this. You know, it's a pretty tricky time. We were talking about it in the break that we're all living through. So, again, it's not just basketball players. It's like, how do I find some silence inside of me? Because the world is chaotic.
Starting point is 00:15:00 Yeah. And that's kind of what the show is about. And, yeah, I was surprised that Draymond was willing to go there so publicly. But then in hindsight, I listen to his podcast, you know, all the time. That guy's not afraid to do anything or say anything. Gotham Chopra,
Starting point is 00:15:14 an award-winning filmmaker. This one is called The Sessions, Draymond Green. So when you say the sessions, that makes it sound like it's therapy. It kind of is. I mean,
Starting point is 00:15:24 but by the way, this has like been, I found this, you know, when I worked with Kobe, and he would just say things all the time. Half the time he would say things.
Starting point is 00:15:31 I'm like, wow, we could never use that. But it felt therapeutic. I was like, I'm going to just let this guy get it off. It's just,
Starting point is 00:15:37 you know, and that's kind of with Tom, You know? So yes, the sessions, it's a series of sessions that Draymond goes through learning meditation, learning about Reiki and energy healing, and just talking about his emotions and where he is, and then figuring out, okay, how is that going to help him on the court? Yeah. It's also, I'm always kind of impressed. LeBron and Draymond have this, is that, you know, they're led by their mothers, and, you know, there's obviously some value to father figures in life, too.
Starting point is 00:16:07 but both have been so good in business. You know, that's hard. We've seen documentaries broke. Draymond and LeBron have been terrific business people. Kevin Durant's been a terrific business person. Now, Steph Curry's dad was an NBA player. So he watched his dad get into business, right? Like Ken Griffey's dad, he was a pro athlete.
Starting point is 00:16:28 I'm always sort of impressed. You know, my dad was in the stock market. I remember, you know, we talk about it. I'm impressed by that. That's something when you get generational wealth and you're not, you're doing the right stuff with it. Well, I'm not sure where, you know, LeBron got it, but I do know he has sort of become the godfather of it.
Starting point is 00:16:48 You know, so all these guys, like Dremont, you mentioned, you know, he's mentored them. They've followed his lead. And Drey, I'm sorry, LeBron with Maverick Carter and Rich Paul, like, you know, we talk about in the sports, like all the influence and all that stuff. But off the court, I mean, it's incredibly impressive what these guys have done.
Starting point is 00:17:07 done and how disciplined they've been. And LeBron talks a lot about it, recognizing his value. And I think all these other guys, like Draymond, have sort of taken his lead. And it's super impressive. And it's changed, obviously, the landscape of sports. Now, this is available on Prime video. Is it available if I went home right now? It is.
Starting point is 00:17:28 Yeah, on Amazon Prime. Okay. You know, every time I go to Whole Foods, are you signed up for Amazon Prime? I'm like, I don't know if I'm signed up for it, but I have it. I mean, toilet paper. You know, it's like, where do you get? I mean, because the pandemic, I mean, I think Amazon Prime saw a huge surge. Oh, of course.
Starting point is 00:17:45 And so, you know, good for us. Gotham, absolute pleasure. I have never met your father. Could have bring him on. Deepak Chopra, of course. And I, you've never brought him on. And I just asked him during the break. I hope it wasn't rude.
Starting point is 00:17:57 I said, what do you and your dad talk about? And you, so I said, you know, can you ever just talk about what did you do this weekend? But I always think it's fascinating. You have been raised by a father who is such a global thinker. And I imagine right now for him is an angst-filled time. He does. He feels like, I mean, I think to some extent we all do, but like what's going on in the world with politics, gun violence, etc.
Starting point is 00:18:27 Like he feels a lot of that almost like personally, like intimately. Like he almost feels like this responsibility. to do something about it, but it's such a huge challenge, like all of these things. But, you know, my dad's a big proponent, and again, like, bringing back to the show of, like, focus on yourself. Like, you know, there's the great quote from Mahatham Gandhi, be the change you want to see in the world. And, you know, my dad's really sort of practice that, and to some extent, preaches that, you know. You've got a fascinating life. Gotham Chopin' Chopin, Choper, a lot more of it to live.
Starting point is 00:18:58 Award-winning filmmaker, go to Prime Video. Four Emmys, uh, The Sessions, Draymond Green, gripping, purse. a look inside his life and his journey. Great seeing you again. I love having you on. Yeah, thanks for having me. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged.
Starting point is 00:19:18 It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. Starting point is 00:19:56 Well, somewhere along the way, this platform became bigger than I ever imagined. And now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, the Clifford Show. The Clifford Show isn't just a podcast, it's a space for honest conversations, stories that don't always get told, and for people who are chasing something bigger.

Listen to the Clifford show on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more behind the scenes, follow at Clifford and at TikTok Podcast Network on TikTok. Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tap Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs?
Starting point is 00:20:50 Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam Jett. And I'm Alex English. We pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s.
Starting point is 00:21:13 To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. They're finishing that sentence. Yes. I don't think there's a more.
Starting point is 00:21:33 important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome to my new podcast, Learn the Hard Way with me, your host, and your favorite therapist, Kear Games. And in recognition of mental health awareness month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience in the mental health field and conversations with so many incredible guests. I'm talking, Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done
Starting point is 00:22:14 enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth. Are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Keir Gaines, as we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast, Learn the Hardway. Open your free iHeartRadio app. Search Learn the Hardway and listen now. All right, Alex, for the news. No, no, no, no, turn on the news.
Starting point is 00:22:51 This is the herd line news. Well, I know what I'm watching next. Absolutely. Yeah, I'm starting tonight, maybe finish it off over the weekend. Thank you. I can't wait. All right. Well, the announcement that USC and UCLA will be moving to the PAC 12, from the PAC 12 to the Big 10 in 2024, is having an immediate impact across college football. The Big 12 is now in deep discussion to add multiple PAC 12 programs to their conference. Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado, Utah, Oregon, and Washington are reportedly being targeted for a potential mood, which would leave the PAC 12 with four teams. And a merger, though, of the Big 12 and Pac-12 is also reportedly possible.
Starting point is 00:23:30 ball with one source saying, everything is on the table. Well, the Arizona schools recruit Texas, so does Colorado and Utah. Those four feel like slam dunks. Oregon, Washington, don't, but they need a home too. They're just too good. They're well-funded. They have great histories, rabid fan support. But they're kind of geographically isolated, so what do you do?
Starting point is 00:23:53 But I mean, to me, if Arizona, at one point the PAC 12 was not only the PAC 10, they were the pack eight. And then the Arizona schools, I think, came in at some point. So Arizona schools feel so big 12 to me. And I also feel, you know, Utah and Colorado, a lot of Texas, if they want to ski, they go to Utah and Colorado. You go to Utah and Colorado, you see Texans everywhere. So those four, the Utes, the Buffaloes, the Wildcats, and the Sun Devils,
Starting point is 00:24:22 they feel like really easy transitions to the Big 12. Now, I'm sure you felt similar, but I was assuming something big was coming after the USC UCLA news came out. It was just the first domino effect that was falling of the Pact 12. Because once your two biggest stars leave, you got to do something to shake it out. Very quickly. And remember, this is good for business for these teams to make the move. And every big business, good business deal is usually based around revenue, around money. And this is going to be great for these teams in terms of revenue.
Starting point is 00:24:56 You know, in the last, I don't know how many years, but it wasn't that long ago, we had 7,500 corporations in America, now we have 3,700. And it's what you see is people buying other people. And we have fewer corporations because big corporations see the value in niche businesses, and they often buy them. And people don't like that. They think it's bad. But the reality is the PGA was vulnerable. Here comes the live tour. I've been saying this for years.
Starting point is 00:25:27 College football is a $5 billion a year business and had no CEO. It's absolutely ludicrous. So this probably doesn't happen. This is what happened to boxing. Dana White came in. Boxing was run by promoters. And Dana White, a centralized figure, a centralized voice came in and stole market share. So with the PGA, boxing and college football, you can blame whoever you want.
Starting point is 00:25:52 They were vulnerable. because they didn't pay attention to the big revenue producers. Pac-12 needed to show more love to USC, UCLA. The PGA needed to show more love to their top eight to 12 golfers, give them a bigger share, generate more revenue. And, you know, boxing was robbing boxers blind forever. And frankly, just the sport was too manipulated by promoters. So this only happens when you're vulnerable,
Starting point is 00:26:24 and you don't take care of important people. Exactly. It's business. All right, moving on. Von Miller, join the bills this offseason with a six-year, $120 million contract. He is 33 years old currently and would be 38 going on 39 at the end of this deal. But he is planning to stick with Buffalo the entire time. He said, this is a six-year deal,
Starting point is 00:26:44 so I'm looking forward to playing the whole thing. I'm trying to play the whole thing out. Tom Brady's done it. Bruce Smith has done it. All the guys that I look up to when it comes to longevity in their career. so I just have to take it one at a time and I'm just going to take whatever God gives me. My intention is to play the whole thing out.
Starting point is 00:27:01 Now, I don't know if he will, but the truth is, if you look at his contract, if Buffalo goes out and it's a three-year deal and they win a Super Bowl, it's all worth it. All worth it. Yeah, they're in the win now. Bills are in the win now. So you get him for a strong three years there.
Starting point is 00:27:19 A good part of his career, then it's worth it. Yeah, I mean, Brady. isn't the future of Tampa. He's the now. Andrew Whitworth last year wasn't the future of the Rams. He was protecting Stafford now. Bobby Wagner is for the now for the Rams. You have those players. Khalil Mack brought in for the Chargers. If they get two great years and win a Super Bowl, they don't care of you. Some guys are now guys that you're going to overpay and Vaughn Miller's one. You're going to get him a little more money than you're probably comfortable with because he's so unique on the market. If you go back to the Rams playoff games last year, he was sensational.
Starting point is 00:27:55 They didn't get him for September. They got him against Mahomes and the Chiefs, and they're getting him, that's what they're getting him for against a Mahalms, a Herbert, a Derek Carr, a Russell Wilson in cold weather. I like that he's set in his expectations. He mentioned Tom Brady's down. Now, Tom Brady is a unicorn in this sense. He has just defied father time and figured it out. and his job is to avoid getting tackled.
Starting point is 00:28:21 Von Miller's job is to tackle, and he's looking to go into his 40s into this. But yeah, it's great deal, excited, excited for him. All right, speaking of Tom Brady, he returned to the Bucks for the 2022 season was a surprise to everyone, including his teammates. The day Brady announced he was coming out of retirement, he had been texting with Mike Evans about the football from their last touchdown.
Starting point is 00:28:43 And Evans thought Brady was messing with him when he hinted that he was coming back. Evans said he sent me an article with, where his ball sold for over 500 grand. He's like, that's a lot of tuition money. I laughed and said to my defense, I didn't know you were going to retire right there. He just sent back a laughing emoji saying,
Starting point is 00:28:59 there's more touchdowns in our future. So I'm just thinking he's trolling me. And then a few hours later, it's announced that he's coming back and I was happy. Last year in Tampa, got his ring, regardless if he wins another, the Belichick Brady breakup.
Starting point is 00:29:13 Great for Brady, great for Bronx. Still undetermined with Belichick. Right now it's undetermined. term. I still contend it sounds nuts, but with Miami's ascension offensively and the way the league is now, if Belichick doesn't make the playoffs in year three and uses a defensive coordinator, Matt Patricia, to call plays, I'm not so sure Robert Kraft isn't going to go to him and have a real sit down with Belichick. I think there's this belief Andy Reid was getting to year after year after year NFC championships. He got to a Super Bowl and Philadelphia said it's
Starting point is 00:29:48 time for a new voice. I am fascinated to see what happens to Belichick because I think their off-season has been a disaster. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. I mean, Brady definitely won this divorce. Yeah. He got the ring. I also think this is a nice reminder that athletes should not make a decision directly after the season ends. Give yourself a month to decompress a couple weeks, figure it out. But hey, we get Brady at least one more year. So we're all excited about that. Good stuff, Alex. with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by.

Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack all day, but just so you all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed cracks.
Starting point is 00:33:47 I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you for finishing that sentence. Yes. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history.

And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Go tankless with Nicarious. Navion, a leader in green technology. Go to tankless, made simple.com. All right, time for Achiever or Deceiver.
Starting point is 00:35:21 Alex, go ahead. All right. We're starting with Tyreek Hill, who signed a four-year, $120 million extension after being traded to the Dolphins. Will he be an achiever or deceiver? Now, Achiever is a player worth their new contract. A deceiver is somebody who won't equal the value. Tyreek Hill, to me, for the dolphins, is a deceiver.
Starting point is 00:35:40 Big downgrade at quarterback Mahomes Dutua, downgraded head coach Andy Reid to Mike McDaniel and the dolphins had the lowest ranked offensive line in football. It could be better, but Tyreek Hill makes his money running past people. You need an offensive line where a quarterback has time to make that throw. Two is not considered a big armed quarterback. Four years, $120 million, I don't think he'll be worth the money. All right.
Starting point is 00:36:08 Devante Adams signed a five-year, $140 million extension after being traded to Raiders. I think he'll be an achiever. It is hard to equal $140 million. But with Hunter Renfro and Darren Waller, he won't draw double teams. Derek Carr, he played with him in college, remains to me the most underrated quarterback in the NFL. Adams is a workaholic and a complete grinder. And having played with an elite quarterback before, he knows how to build a relationship. Again, 140 million for a receiver. If it is anybody worth it, I would take Devante Adams. Cooper Cup signed a three-year, $80.1 million extension with the Rams. This is an easy one, achiever.
Starting point is 00:36:50 It's really a discount. He could have gotten more on the open market. He led all players and receptions and touchdowns and receiving yards in the playoffs, and it was the first year with Matt Stafford. So it's reasonable to think that Stafford and Cooper Cup really started to gel post-Thanksgiving. So I can't see a situation also in their division. Seattle won't be nearly as good. So I can't see this relationship doing anything but growing.
Starting point is 00:37:21 Stefan Diggs signed a four-year $96 million extension with the bills. That's an achiever. I think it's not that it's a discount, but it's very doable. First, Stefan and Josh are signed with the bills through 2027. They have been magic so far. They have the most receptions. Stefan has the most receptions, 230 by any player in his first two years. years with the team. And one of the reasons this works so well is Stefan can get over the top,
Starting point is 00:37:47 and Josh has arguably the best arm in the game. So you're talking about a super creative quarterback and a super fast and creative wide receiver. So this was just, this was always, Stefan Diggs was always limited with Kirk Cousins, who's not a deep ball thrower and can't buy extra time. So Josh Allen's great. If the line deteriorates, he can buy extra time to throw, allowing digs to go deeper and further down the field. So this is as good as any receiver quarterback combo, any construct in the league. Chris Godwin signed a three-year, $60 million extension with the bucks.
Starting point is 00:38:24 My staff doesn't want me to say this, but a deceiver. I think he's about overpaid because I think he suffers from injuries. Also, there's an argument to be made that Mike Evans is often viewed as the number one, especially in the red zone. So if I'm going to pay that kind of big money, I want you to be my touchdown guy, and I want you to be healthy, and sometimes he's neither. All right, Brandon Cook signed a two-year, $39.8 million extension with the Texans. A little bit of a deceiver. He's been elevated by Brady and Belichick, and then he had McVeigh and Gough,
Starting point is 00:38:55 and then he had Breeze and Sean Payton, Deshawn Watson, and Bill O'Brien. So I don't think he has that situation. He's got a troubling concussion issue. I heard rumors two years ago. He was thinking about retirement. So he's a speed receiver and he adapts pretty quickly to new environments, but I think he's been elevated a bit by coaching and quarterback play. Alan Robinson signed a three-year, $46.5 million deal with the Rams in free agency. Achiever, I think he's one of the more underrated receivers in the league.
Starting point is 00:39:28 And think about it. The quarterbacks he has played with in the NFL so far have been Andy Dalton and Chad Hennie and Matt McGloin and Trubisky and Foles and Fields and Blake Bortles. and now he gets Matt Stafford and John McVeigh. So he's the opposite of a Brandon Cooks where he's had to overcome defensive coaches, first-time coaches, backup quarterbacks, and yet has put up really good numbers.
Starting point is 00:39:52 I think he's going to be a huge hit with the Rams. Terry McCloren signed a three-year, $70 million extension with the commanders. Achiever. He has caught, he's had nine different starting quarterbacks in three years. So this will be arguably the best quarterback he's had. He just has had no continuity.
Starting point is 00:40:15 And he's a guy even in college. It took him a while to find his footing. But three years, 70 million, no pro athlete or no pro football player has earned their money in a weird dysfunctional franchise with multiple quarterbacks than Terry McLauran. Good player would have paid him. All right. We'll see you tomorrow. Dan Wetzel, Gotham Chopra, Ethan Strauss, and Tony. O'Donnell's love today's show and a Tuesday.
