Fox Sports College National Championship. He's in better shape than me, and that's discouraging for me, to be honest with you. Let's, you know, it's easy to blame the Cowboys. Or we could look at the Saints and say, new coordinator, Kubiak's kid out of the San Francisco system. They had a speed receiver. You know, we can just beat on the Cowboys. Is it possible? Every year this league, Jimmy, gives us a team.

Last year it was Houston, and they catch everybody off. guard, is New Orleans maybe just that team? Well, I think New Orleans is very good. But, you know, Colin, I think early in the season, the first two or three weeks, you know, it's hard to get a read on some of these teams because they don't play, nobody plays in the preseason. The only teams that you can really count on are the veteran teams that hadn't had any changes.

Well, New Orleans is one of those teams. You know, they're a veteran team, and they didn't have a whole lot of. of changes this all season. You look at the Cowboys, they completely change their defensive scheme. Plus they lost some good players. And so I think, you know, let's give everybody two or three weeks before you really say, hey, they're good or they're bad. Now, there's a couple of them that are bad and they're going to stay bad. And there's a couple of them they're pretty good and they're going to stay good. But mainly the veteran teams is the one you can count on. You know, I brought Matt Hassel back on earlier and he said, you know, we can blend

the Bears old line, but you can audible your way out of trouble. He's, Caleb's late on routes. I mean, Bill Belichick, your friend said, I'm not impressed. He's 50% in preseason against Vanilla stuff. Are you a little concerned about the accuracy

and the kind of the managing of the game you see from Caleb Williams? Well, I'm concerned here early because you don't want to get him beat up. But I think he talked about the same number of is what Troy Aitman did against Philadelphia his first year.

Yeah. I think Caleb's got to understand that he's not going to be able to make a great play every time. Sometimes he's going to have to throw it away. But they can, and once they get the receivers healthy, once the offensive line improves, Caleb, you know, Caleb, you know, he'll understand to throw the ball away occasionally. Yeah.

You know, Jimmy, either it's your Cowboys, Belichick's Patriots are Andy Reid's chiefs. There are teams that don't necessarily play great for three and a half hours. But damn, they're good late with two minutes left. They're really good situationally. Do I credit Andy Reed, Belichick, you, Aikman, Brady? I watch Kansas City. They throw bad picks.

You know, they make mistakes. But in these high leverage moments, I'm watching Cincinnati, Buffalo. You know, all these good teams beat themselves. Who do I give that credit to in Kansas City? Well, I think the number one coaching aspect in professional football, I say it time and time again, and Howie and Michael Strahan get on my case that they've heard it before. Success in the NFL is not who makes the most great plays. It's who makes the fewest bad plays.

And you look at a team that turns the ball over a bunch, hey, Kansas City nearly got beat because they turned it over. But on the other side, you look at Cincinnati, they had the stupid penalties that cost them the game. Yeah. You know, it's interesting. I don't know if you have a relationship with Jim Harbaugh, but you are one of the few coaches ever that could do it in college and pro.

And they're totally different sensibilities. Even great coaches, like a Bill Parcells, I don't think he would have worked in college. He wouldn't have dealt with the boosters and the recruiting and the nonsense. I just don't think Bill would have done that stuff. but so it's a very unique guy Pete did it, you did it, Harbaugh's done it, he's taken the same defense that was the worst in the league last year. They've added almost nobody, and they're the number one scoring defense.

Is it scheme? Is it culture? What is it? Well, you can play pretty good defense when you rush for over 200 yards. Yeah, running the football and keeping the football. away from the opponent and eating that clock up is going to help your defense. When you're throwing it every down, you know, that defense is going to have some struggles because they're going to be on the field a lot. Yeah. So I think it's got to be complimentary football as far as your defense and your offense

what you're doing scheme-wise. Yeah. I got to ask you about Tua. You know, I said if it was my son, I'd tell him to pack it in. But then I think to myself, boy, I wouldn't want, you know, if I was a quarter-brose, I wouldn't want probably that to be my last play in the NFL. What do you do? I mean, give me a big picture view on.

You're down there and the keys. You're close to it. What do you do with the Tua situation? As far as my stance, if I was his coach, I wouldn't say a word. I wouldn't want to influence him. I wouldn't want to influence him to continue to play. I wouldn't want to influence him to retire. This has got to be Tua's decision.

his family's decision, the neurologist, their decision, they've got to make that call because anything that you might do to influence him, you might regret later on. So again, you know, that's got his call, and I wouldn't want to advise him either way. Yeah. It is, you know, this quarter, this league is funny, Jimmy. If you voted for MVP today, you'd give it to Derek Carr or Sam

Arnold or Baker Mayfield the league Gino Smith may get a vote. What do you make all these middling guys on their third and fourth team crushing it? What do you make of it? Well, I think especially with quarterbacks you've got to have the right coach

you've got to have the right supporting cast and they've got to have some experience. You can't give up on some of these talented quarterbacks that's this first year or two or even for some of them, three or four, years. Everybody knew Sam Darnel, you know, he had talent coming out of college. He turned the

ball over a bunch in college, but he's got talent. Baker Mayfield, he was the number one pick for a reason. Again, they've got to get put in the right situation with the right coach with the right supporting cast. If they don't have a supporting cast, they're not going to be able to show their talent. If they don't have the right coach, they're not going to be able to show their talent. So it's got to be a combination of a thing. And I think, you know, I'm happy to see the success of Baker Mayfield because he's gone through some struggles. I'm happy to see Donald, you know, I have success. They're showing right now the talent that they had when they were drafted high. You know, Jimmy, you were able to in Dallas. I want to circle back to them. Your Miami teams

were glamorous and flashy, but they were tough. You took a lot of two-star recruits, built running games. have great offensive lines. They were always harder to get. Your teams, there was a glamour to them, but they didn't let it go to their head. Your cowboy teams had glamour, but they were tough and physical. I'm a little worried about Dallas. Last year, week 15, they trail Buffalo 31 to 3. They get crushed by Green Bay. They get run off the field yesterday. I'm okay with glamour, but you've got to be able to take a punch. You know, you got to be able to have a chin. Jimmy, aren't you, I'm a little concerned how often this team is just middle of the first quarter. They're not ready to compete.

Isn't that a little worrisome? I think, you know, Dallas is a unique situation because they are so visible. They've got so many fans. They've got so many people telling them how great they are. Yeah. that they don't develop that toughness and that, you know, being able to overcome adversity type of thing. Because, you know, it's almost, you know, they've got the country club type life. And so that's why you've got to have the type of coach is going to drill it in them.

You know, the one thing, you know, that people don't realize, you know, all the glamour, you talk about the glamour of the cowboys when I was there. we had the triplets. And when anybody talks about those teams, they say, hey, you know, you had Michael and Emmett and Troy. Well, they don't even mention that we led the NFL in total defense. We were number one in defense one year. We were number two in defense another year. And so, you know, back one year, we led the league in defense and didn't have a single pro bowler.

So you look at New Orleans, you know, look how they play defense. You know, they are a physical football team, and they didn't even have one of their best corners out there yesterday. So that allowed their offense to do some things. And that's one reason why they're going to be a dangerous team. They're a veteran group. And when you got Camaro, you know, they're running back to make the big plays. Derek Carr is an excellent deep.

thrower. They had an excellent game plan. You notice they didn't have a whole lot of just pure dropbacks. Yeah. You know, that's what Dallas is strong at rushing the passenger on the dropback passing game. All of it was play action. You know, Dallas didn't protect the perimeter.

You know, they've got to do some things to correct that defense. And they'll do that. Zimmer's a good football coach. He'll correct a lot of those things. Jimmy, as always, what a pleasure. that's number one defense with no pro bowlers that's something that's pretty good coaching you pat yourself in the back that's pretty good coaching jimmy right yeah and now the next year you know charles halee a few of them went to the pro bowl but that first year none of them went to the pro bowl we led to lead to lead you crazy everybody likes scoring holland they like those touchdowns jimmy as always it's great seeing you

okay i'll go fishing i'll catch one for you All right. Please do that. Please do it. By the way, an added note to sort of what he said about Dallas, there is a country club feel to it. And it is hard. I always tell this story. So I covered Oregon for years and they played at Old Hudson Stadium and they had Rich Brooks. And they were a real physical team, not a lot of talent, decent quarterback play. Dan Fouts, obviously. And then they got a new stadium.

And it was suddenly the stadium got a little quieter. you know, there's a little more money. A lot of the regular people couldn't afford to get the good seats. The stadium got a little quieter, and they got a little bougie with Phil Knight's money. Now, they're good now, but there was a transition for one or two years. You're like, oh, they got, Oregon got country club. They got soft. And there is a line.

Texas Longhorn footballs always been glamorous. Ohio State's great. I've never thought of them as glamorous. They're just great. Alabama's great. They're not glamorous. USC, Texas feel like a little bit of glam. Right?

And Dallas has this. that. But when Jimmy was there, there was an innate toughness to it. I mean, the Yankees are always going to be, the Dodgers always going to be kind of glamour franchises, but the great Yankee teams, you go back to the Jorge Posada, Bernie Williams, Mariano Rivera, there was a toughness. They had brocious at third. There were tough guys as well. So it does feel like you punch the cowboys early. A lot of times they fold up shop. They're not in it for the 10-round fight. All right, let's start with the breaking news. Bryce Young, who mystifyingly went number one overall last year, has been benched ahead of week three. Tom Pellasaro adds that Andy Dalton, the red rifle, will get to start again.

against the Raiders. The line, by the way, was seven with Bryce Young. It went off the board. It's now reopened at five and a half. A little respect for Andy Dalton. I don't know. To put up my, I was just digging up some Bryce Young stats here, Colin. It's all bad. I almost feel bad reading all this stuff. But 18 career starts. He's two and 16. 11 touchdowns in his career. Listen, wouldn't you, the line of demarcation here. Look at the since he entered the league. The line here is 59% completion percentage. He was an accuracy guy. Here's the other thing.

So his first coach is Frank Wright. Frank Wright got Carson Wentz to go 27 touchdown seven picks. He had Andrew Luck. Frank Wright got Andrew Luck to have his most efficient season. Carson Wentz to have his most efficient season. And Philip Rivers to win 11 games. Could move like a batting cage? Then he goes to Carolina and basically

Bryce can't play. Canales saves Gene. Smyno Smith's career, reboots Baker's career, and he gives up after two games. Well, no, all right, let's come down. The Panthers... Oh, I mean, this is, come on.

This is, this is, it's over. It's not over. It's not over. It feels over, but it's not. Like, let's just put this in perspective. They have played the Saints and the Chargers who are undefeated and look like playoff team.

The Panthers have 352 yards on the season. No, I mean, that is. I don't know if you're ready for a hot take, but what if we consider, would you consider trading Bryce Young? Or is it too early to bail on him if you're careful? Well, you know, down in Miami, there's a quarterback with a concussion. Now that, but yeah, but I don't think that's the answer. I don't, I mean, Mike McDaniels are really sharp offensive mind.

Dude, Frank Wright. I get it. Go look what he did with luck, wents, and rivers. And Canales, I know. You got five. I'm just trying to help Bryce Young. Two coaches have saved five careers. And they're both.

They couldn't. I think the worst part is Sunday, Canales, after the loss, is like, yeah, Bryce Young is our quarterback. And then, like, watches the tape overnight, comes out,

and we got to bench him. He missed a lot of throws. I think they're two for 22 on third down. Like, he just is not seeing the field or blitzing him. It's just happening too fast. I think it's over for him as, like, a career,

but I don't think it's over as like a starter. He's going to get a couple more looks in Carolina, right? Kind of has to, no? You think he's not playing the rest of the year? I think. I mean, this is a bad team. What happens if Andy Dalton comes in and they lose, but they're viable? They're probably going to be viable this week,

and they're going to be like, oh, well. I mean, what if Andy Dalton and Gardner Minchew, it's 24, 23, and you're like, we've got a chance to win these games. They're not even competitive. Their third downs are like, what are they, two for 22? Not great. Not great.

That's just incompetent. So let's just, we have to tie a bow on this, Colin. How could anybody, and not just the Panthers, but us, go to any of these guys who do draft stuff, almost everybody had Bryce Young as QB1 coming out in the draft. Everybody did. Does nobody know how to identify quarterbacks? Well, no, no. First of all, I think identifying him is really hard.

Very rare, about every six or seven years. I mean, Trevor Lawrence, what's going on? About every six or seven years. you get a quarterback. Like Caleb feels like he's going to be able. He'll be fine. No, no, Colin, this is different. He's 2 and 16.

No, I know. And at no point has he looked. Like, Baker had some moments with the Browns. Okay? Daniel Jones had some moments with the Giants. Everybody's had some, a couple good games. Bryce Young has had nothing, literally zero in 18. I'm not sure he's had it.

At the end of last year, his passer rating was mid-80. They didn't lead in the fourth quarter for one second last year. There only two wins came at the gun. I'm just, there's like no positive. takeaways, how could we, we, everybody, including us, have missed so badly on Stroud versus How about this? If you go to Miami and say, we'll save the season, we'll give you Bryce Young, give us one of your receivers. Come on.

Well, not Tyree, Kelly, Jaden. We'll give you a fifth round pick at best. It's just, Carolina, it's a rough spot. All right, let's move on to, oh, let's go to Miami. So after Tua was concussed Thursday, his third or fourth, depending on who you read, everybody said Tua should retire. I said it myself. I think you said it.

You should seriously consider it. Well, Ian Rappaport said Tua's goals to get back on the field, and he has no interest in retiring from the NFL. Tua is set to meet with a neurologist this week before making any big decisions on his long-term future. Given that the league changed the concussion protocol and rules and all that stuff for quarterbacks, after Tua situation, there's no way he's starting anytime soon. We would agree on that, right? Skyler Thompson's going to be the guy.

We know he's not the guy. They signed Tyler Huntley from the Ravens practice squad to their active roster. So going from another team's practice squad to your roster. Tua's not playing this week. You can just write that off. Tim Boyle was signed to the Miami practice squad. We know he's a Joker from the Jets. No, come on.

It's bad. Colin, I'm going to float another name for you. We like these trade ideas. They rarely happen, but why not? So Justin Fields continues to win in Pittsburgh. He's doing okay. Does Russell Wilson say, hey, guys, I'm not, you're not playing me? No, because...

Can you send me to Miami if they were interested? Well, because Tua got the bag, so he's going to be the starter. Russell will be back to backing up. You're under the impression Tua is coming back anytime soon. You think he is? I think he will come back in like week six. Why then the season could be over. Skylar Thompson ain't getting you a win.

Probably not. What's Miami schedule? look like. Let's see if we can call it up here on the screen. But like, again, whether it's Tyler Huntley, Tim Boyle, Skyler Thompson, none of these guys. And you know at that point, Tyree Kill starts to get ticked off. So they play at Seattle, that's an L. That's a definite loss. Tennessee goes either way. It's at home. And then it's New England and buy. So I think he'll play in week seven after the buy at Indy. That's when... And what's their record? Are they 0 in 5? One and 4? I think they beat Tennessee.

Put a lot of faith in... They won't beat Tennessee. Will Levis will beat Tennessee. Well, Levis might be the next guy, Ben. All right, final story, Colin, to Detroit with the Lions. Listen, you know, I had the Lions left right, every which way but loose, and they lost 20 to 16 outright to the bucks. Here's the worst part, Dan Campbell, who everybody loves, we rave about Dan Campbell. He royally screwed up at the end of the half, a fire drill, and they ended up at the Tampa 9-yard line, didn't even get the kickoff because they were penalized for too many men on the field. So they, the clock runoff, end of the half. And the Lions fans are like, what the hell?

Well, here's Dan Campbell talking about it after the game. Their coach cost him. Their head coach cost them this one. There's no way to justify this. It's a massive error on my part, no one else's. And it was just between hurry-up field goal and clocking it. And it was 100% my fault. That's a good admission.

I'm friendly with some Lions fans. You know, they're starved and everybody thinks, oh, it's a Super Bowl this year. They have been... in a word, disappointed. Well, you and I, look at Dan Campbell, is an incredibly relatable, likable figure. But I don't, you know, we all say, I don't trust Mike McCarthy in big spots. I don't trust Dan Campbell in big spots.

I think he's overly emotional. I understand coordinators, you know, going for the point. Or the special teams coach, hey, I want to get a block. Or a blitz by an overly aggressive young D.C. I want my coach to be sort of the soothing voice. Dan coaches like a coordinator trying to upgrade his resume. So sometimes I just don't think situationally McCarthy gets clobbered. I trust him more than Dan Campbell.

And I like Dan as a culture creator. Lions cards to me is second best game of the week next week after Cowboys Ravens. I think that Lions Cardinals game is the interest because it. You don't want to overreact. Minnesota Houston. That's a good game. That's a really good game. Week 3 slate looks good.

It's good because the college football slate. It is kind of mid. Yeah. Or below average. College football season. College football schedule this week was mid. Yeah, nothing great. Nothing great.

SEC, by the way, keeps continuing to stink. Sorry SEC fans. Who stinks? Who? All of them? Nobody's been impressive there. Well, Bama crushed Wisconsin. Take a favor by like 17 points.

Through one year and a couple games, here's the comp. Sorry for the radio audience, but it's not close. One guy is a Pro Bowl-level quarterback.

The other guy, and for Stroud, it's not just the winning part, whereas Bryce Young's 2 and 16, C.J. Stroud is 11 and 6. But what you really look is the quarterback rating is one guy is just, I mean, C.J. Stroud is so effortlessly accurate. Last night was a bit of a choppy game, but he made four or five big-time plays, and he talked about it after. It's harder way in the NFL. I'm happy. of course I'm not satisfied I'll never be satisfied there's always things that you can point out so I definitely understand

we need to be better but you know like you said winning is number one so we won and now it's time to move on and get better yeah I mean you just just jumps off the TV you know it's funny watching Caleb Williams last night there's

there's you know who do you blame under duress 48 snaps 36 pressures, but it does point out something that isn't discussed very often about being able to audible out of pressure, being able to see and manipulate the defense, which is really hard for any quarterback, but virtually impossible for the young ones. But Caleb misses receivers badly on a regular basis. Now, again, you're watching these tapes. He's elusive, but he's, there's just too much. Some of these throws, you just can't make in pro football.

That was one of them. and missing guys by 7, 8, 9 yards. DJ Moore got very, very frustrated. Matt Hasselback earlier today, 18 years as a pro quarterback. Here's what he saw. If you're counting on a rookie quarterback to play well this whole year, like if you think this is your year, it's not your year. I saw a guy throwing the ball late.

It's very easy to blame offensive line or to blame scheme, but if I had to put money somewhere and I have a rookie quarterback, I'm guessing that the rookie quarterback didn't get his protection or his eyes where they needed to be when people blitz. And I think that's definitely something you saw yesterday was rookie quarterback. We're going to blitz you and see if you're ready to go on the past protection stuff. And clearly right now it's still, it looks like someone learning on the fly. Yeah, Demico Ryan's is not known for a lot of blitzes. He didn't blitz, I don't think much in the first series.

then he brought the house and you saw it so i mean listen it blitzing's hard it's the thing about blitzing a quarterback young ones are overwhelmed old ones manipulate you brady loved when you blitzed mahomes loves when you blitz the young guys don't they just can't slide protections and there's a lot of components to this whole quarterback thing but um i mean what what's funny is i'm watching cj stroud and that was a feisty game last night i i was surprised it was that close there were multiple times that I thought, I thought Houston was going to put them away, and they just couldn't quite get it done. And Houston, by the way, got a guy punching people on the sidelines.

Houston looks like another team to me that would lose to Kansas City because they'd beat themselves. They got the talent, but a lot of their talent is super young. Houston's very emotional, emotional teams and young teams. I mean, that DB last night for the Bengals, I think that was like a rookie player, a late round guy for Cincinnati that made that move. the PI, I think. So there you go.

But I got my herd hierarchy. I just filled it out. NFC is better. How are you doing that without the Eagles playing tonight? Well, I'm waiting for them. If they're impressive, then they make my top five. They're impressive. So I'm waiting for the Eagles.

But what's interesting is, we said this before the season, that the last couple of years the NFC's been down. You know, Aaron leaves the NFC and all the quarterbacks and there's rebuilding. If Minnesota, is this good. If Arizona is this feisty, if the Saints are this good, NFC's got some teams. It's so early.

Interesting stuff coming out on this Bryce Young quarterback situation. So someone already looked at the last three quarterback classes. The Caleb Williams class, the Bryce Young class, and then the 2002, which was Kenny Pickett, was the first quarterback taken. This is staggering. I didn't realize this. So there's only two quarterbacks from those three entire drafts playing well right now. CJ Stroud's one.

Do you want to guess the other one? Well, TJ's been excellent. It's tough. Give me a second. Do you need a hint? So the last three classes. Yes. I'll give you a hint.

He was not a first round pick. Jalen Hertz. No, he was a little older than that. It's Brock Purdy. What is the symmetry between Stroud and Purdy? Both are in Shanahan offenses. The guy slow it goes, it brings it to Houston, and Purdy thriving in San Francisco. So the NFL defenses have basically largely solved every other offense in the league,

except Shanahan offenses, to an extent. Obviously, it's still early. But Colin, this quarterback play, I'm just telling you, the number of touchdown passes is way down in the league. We're going through a defensive resurgence. And if you don't have a running game right now, like, you're struggling to move of football. Steve Kime said this Friday, the former Arizona Cardinals. GM, I said, what's the position? You just feel like there's not

enough talent. He went, offensive tackle. I mean, there's like four great ones in the league. I mean, the Chargers are the only team in the league with two great tackles apparently. I mean, there's teams with two solid ones. I mean, the Chargers looks like Slater and an Alt are studs.

We're going to have to look at reallocating resources from wide receiver and some of these other positions to offensive line. You have to do that. There is a, I mean, the Rams yesterday did not have a playable level. tackle. And then you want to go back to the 21 class. Trevor Lawrence went first, Colin. You said what's his record, 20 and 32?

Chiefs yesterday, they're struggling to tackle. The good teams are struggling at tackle. Weird moment in the NFL. Baltimore organization drafts, well, they're struggling to tackle. Well, Lonnie's right. I mean, it's tough. Yeah. See you tomorrow.
