Our friend of the Athletic, Senior NFL Insider, Diana Rusini, covered the NFL for, was it, 9, 10 years? Okay, the first thing is, we saw the Niners.

They were real noisy. We're calling the Niners Jets the Baggage Bowl. Everybody's got all these stories and all this noise. But Trent and Ayuk are back. Hassan Reddick, remember, Huff left of the Eagles. So the top sack guy left town to go to Philly. So they got in Resettick, Hassan Reddick, to replace him. Where are we on his deal with the Jets, Diana?

Yeah, let's start with that. He's the last one holding out technically at this point right now that Trent Williams showed up and got his contract. So I was told that both sides are communicating. So this isn't one of those standoffs where, you know, they're ignoring the other and they're not calling the other back. They're at least having conversations. I don't have a lot of confidence that it's going to get fixed and figured out

before the Monday night game in San Francisco. But to me, when you're covering these types of stories, communication is always a good thing. It can lead to some hope and to some things to start moving in the right direction. The New York Jets want him there. They have put out every message that you could possibly want out there in terms of through the media of Hassan. Come on, man.

Get here. We want you. you have a locker. You know, they've done it all. And this is really going to come down to what the player wants to do here. And again, you know, Colin, you've broken this down and dissected the decision making from the New York Jets in terms of trading for a player without a contract. It will still remain one of the most curious decisions when we reflect back on this offseason of what happened here? Was this a miscommunication?

Was this overplaying a hand? Was this two sides thinking? it was going to go differently, obviously. They both thought this was going to go differently. And now here we are, just a few days out from a big Monday night game, and they don't have a guy that they were hoping was going to be a big part of this defense. So I don't know how good this team's going to be, but I think this is just a great story. Russell Wilson's name the starter. I kind of felt like privately he and his agent, Mark Rogers, Russell, we're kind of giving the one. We're going to bring you here to the one, give you some certainty.

think it's the right call. How firm, I look at this Steeler schedule, how firm is this grasp for Russell Wilson as QB1? I don't think it's as firm as everyone probably wants it to be. Look, if he stays, that means they're winning. If he's the starting quarterback, that means he's handling this offense, this Arthur Smith look at the level that they expected to be. Justin Fields put up a competition, right? So I understand the poll position phrase through everybody. off and I think there were a lot of people out there and perhaps maybe even whispering about it of this is Russell's job.

When I was in Pittsburgh, I was told this was a true competition and there were times where Justin Fields was making a really strong case, especially when Russell Wilson wasn't able to be out there because of the calf. So when Omar Khan, the general manager of Mike Tomlin, sat in a room, they made the decision to

go with the veteran based on the experience and you have two quarterbacks here who mentally need to continue to be built up, both of their confidence have taken a hit. And how could it not? You look at Russell Wilson and the way that ended in Denver. And obviously, that just was not a good match with Sean Payne. And there was, he took a lot of hits coming out of Denver. So there's a little bit of buildup, a psychological buildup, right? He's been named the captain. That's a really good call by Mike Tomlin. If you want to make your

starting quarterback feel like he is the guy. And that is what Tomlin has consistently done since Russell Wilson visited with the Pittsburgh Steelers during the offseason is, hey man, like we like you, we love you, we think you're good. He's doing all the right things to make Russell Wilson remember that he's a guy that can play. And then you have Justin Fields, who we know that the bear situation,

unfortunate, but it didn't work there, despite a lot of fans believing in Justin Fields. Obviously, we know front office didn't think so. So he's another work in progress, but he definitely has made a really strong case. He's going to be part of the offense. Arthur Smith told me he's going to be part of this offense in terms of how it's going to look. They're going to have packages for him.

We've seen a Smith offense in Tennessee before looked that way. So this isn't going to be a scenario where the backup quarterback just sit on the bench, holding the clipboard, you know, possibly scrolling through Instagram during timeouts. No, this is a guy that's going to be very involved. Speaking of Sean Payton, Bo Nick's named a captain today, you know, we both know Sean. I think Sean likes his roster better than Vegas draft geeks. I look at all these over-unders and I'm like, people think Denver's going to win five games.

I think Sean thinks he found the guy. I think Sean may think he has the best quarterback. What are you hearing? What are your expectations? It's been a quiet, collaborative. It's been a nice off season for Denver, hasn't it, in the last month? I don't think Sean Payton thinks he has. a good quarterback. I think Sean Payton knows he has a good quarterback. He's all in on Bo Nix,

right? So the Denver Broncos have it named a rookie quarterback since 1967 since Floyd Little was a captain, right? 1967. And here, Bo Nix, not even picked as a top quarterback, those six of all the quarterbacks picked, is the captain of the Denver Broncos now after what was described to me by Sean Pee. And when we interviewed him for him. for Scoop City as just an outstanding training camp, understanding the offense, he's comprehending it, he's in the media rooms, absorbing as much as he possibly can,

he's communicating with Drew Breeze. They're giving this kid everything to succeed. And I know we just touched on what Mike Tomlin's doing in Pittsburgh in terms of building up that mental side, the confidence in these guys. Sean Payne has put on a masterclass on how to make a rookie quarterback believe that his head coach is in his corner, that he's going to be his cup man, because that's what Sean Payton has done this entire offseason, which is he's expressed it, but he's obviously shown that he believes in this choice because Bo Nix is the starting quarterback and now the captain of the Broncos.

You know, Philadelphia has a better roster than anybody in their division. When the story comes out that Nick Sariani and Jalen hurts, you just don't see this. Like, you don't see offensive coaches struggling with young quarterbacks. McVeigh saved Jared Goff. I mean, like, I understand like Belichick and Mac Jones. Like, I get that. Pete Carroll and Russell Wilson. I get that.

Young coaches and young quarterbacks, I mean, they are allies. They elevate both. When I see that story, they don't really like each other. I'm like, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. forget Mike McCarthy on the hot seat. They paid Jalen. They're not selling Jalen. Am I crazy to think that Siriani needs to have a good September,

like needs to start well? Or is it not that kind of pressure? You're the most sane person I know right now saying that. Absolutely, Nick Siriani needs to have success coming out of the gate here, especially in September. They've played every card, right? They did what you do when you start to lose confidence in the head coach. You get rid of the coordinators, right?

That's always the move. So they fire Brian Johnson, right after they get bounced last year from the wildcar round. They fire Sean Desai and Matt Patricia. Howie Roseman comes in and hires Kellyn Moore and Vic Fangio. He's got extremely talented coordinators on both sides of the ball. The offense in Philadelphia is all Kellynne Moore. There's going to be a lot of emphasis on the run game. This is going to be a Sequin Barkley show.

it's different down there, Colin. It's different. All of it. And it's good. It's good for Philadelphia. They needed this. You talk about disconnects. You talk about relationships not working.

That is very true. There was a disconnect between Nick Suriani and Jalen Hertz. That's not the case right now. Howie Rosam made a really good decision saying to Nick Suriani, you're stepping away from all this. I'm giving the play calling to Kellanmore, and you're going to oversee all this. And you're going to use all the skills that you're going to use. have as a head coach because he is skilled and the guys love nick seriani down there but in terms of

where they think they can get the most out of this roster because ownership believes they put together a championship roster you know and we can go through we know how many uh all pro players are on this team with the exception of losing jason kelsey who we know was was essentially it's like having a coach out there um calling the protections and and being such a significant uh leader both on the field and in the locker. It's a gigantic loss. And we're going to be talking about this again, this season, about where this line may have, may take a step back

or may not look as scout as we've seen as they adjust to it. That's the area I'm watching in September. But all in all, the pressure's on. Nick Seriani needs to say, I got the answers, as I'm the CEO of this team now overseeing it, because they're giving him every reason to have success now. This is the herd line news. Game I love this weekend is Vikings giant. Sam Darnel officially set to be the starter all season. You know, J.J. McCarthy's done for the year with the knee injury. Darnold's on his fourth team. I kind of missed that. It's flown by. He's going to start with a pretty good coaching staff.

We love Kevin O'Connell. Vikings O.C. Wes Phillips believes Darnold is set up for success. He's got a lot of experience playing football and being in different systems, I think, you know, you have some history with some concepts. And a lot of us run very similar concepts. There might be a tweak here or there or maybe we coach it a little bit differently or coach the footwork a little bit differently. But the one thing he's done is come out and be able to throw the football extremely well throughout the football. the spring. We're really excited about Sam and the kind

of year we believe he can have and will have. What do you think? Nine and eight. That's a little rich, given the schedule. It's difficult. Eight and nine. I just think they're going to be competitive. That's what I think. I think they're a non-playoff team. I honestly feel the same way about

Denver. I just think most people acknowledge, most people agree with us. Minnesota's not a playoff team, but they'll be fun to watch and competitive. They could be. Now, look at the schedule. They need to Beat the Giants in week one. No, I mean, it's the hardest schedule in the league, week two through week eight. You're looking at possibly like an 0-N-7 start if you don't beat the Giants.

Have to beat the Giants. They're going to be dogs against the Niners. I know Niners are in a short week. Houston Texans are no joke. You love the Packers. We know the Jets defense is ferocious. It's a... That's why I backed off Vikings in the playoffs.

I mean, look at the schedule, Colin. Come on. That's extremely difficult. No, it's... Now, the middle one... of it. You get some Indies and Tennessee's in Chicago, Arizona. You got some wins in the middle.

But by, you know, that's the thing for Sam Donald because of J.J. McCarthy's injury. The good thing for Sam is he's going to get all the starts. So they're not going to bail on him. If J.J. McCarthy was upright right now, they could be moving off him by the Green Bay game. So this is Sam's season.

And they've always been a rental. So if Sam wants to get the next contract, he's going to get this year. By the way, Baker got another contract. So there's a big year for Sam. Yeah, that's a good point about it. You think he could be another Baker type guy?

Absolutely. Gino Smith was a disaster. And Gino now just got another, didn't he get another extension with Sierra? Figured it out, yeah. I mean, I like the Vikings this weekend. I don't know about you. Against the Giants? Minutes one and a half on the road.

Sam Darnold going back to where he saw ghosts a few years ago in New York. Ghostbusters have cleaned house. There's no ghost there anymore. Okay. I see you. All right. Next up is. Your guy, Bo Nix, he stunned everybody at Broncos camp. He was so good.

Not only is he the starter, but he was named one of the team captains for the season. The first Broncos rookie to do so since Hall of Famer Floyd Little. Now, okay, Bo Nix will face the 12th man in Seattle in his debut. It is a really rough one. There's no way around it. This is one of the most sharp bet games. All the heavy gamblers are pushing this up. Seattle minus 6. That's a big number to lay.

But you look at that Broncos team, and I know you're bullish on Denver to not be awful. I think they're going to struggle out of the game. This is rough. I think Bowen makes a little better than you're paying him. He's good. He's really good. But, I mean, you could only make so much chicken salad out of what that roster is, and it ain't good. That's one of the worst rosters in the league. And there's guys out there who broke down every roster.

Okay. It's not one of the worst roster. if you just gave them an elite edge rusher, that's a playoff team. They're just not going to be able to get offenses off the field. If you gave them in a... You gave them a one guy. You get Max Crosby. By the way, I wouldn't...

How about that at the trade deadline? Denver goes and gets Mac Crosby. You think Denver's going to be better than the Raiders? Oh, come on. Wow. Sean Peyton, Bownecks. Better than the Raiders. What do you have against Antonio Pearson?

I got nothing against anybody. But I don't think that's... I think you're looking at two different... I like... Denver's personnel. Dulcith's the tied-in. I got Mims. Raiders are better at tight-in. But okay. Well, Raiders are better at time, but a capable tight-in. Great left tackle. What other guards is good? Two backs I like. I got Mims, Cortland Sutton, and a kid out of Oregon that Bo Nix played with.

Yup, and I got... That's a bunch of B talent on the outside. Devonte Adams is what the Raiders have outside. Hey. And Bowers and... Houston was a bunch of B talent until they had the coach and C.J. Stroud. You just... You just... This is... Listen, we've been doing this for three, four months now, just batting around ideas. It's game time. What? Yes, exactly. This weekend, there's going to be some

truths coming out. You'd be like, ooh, kind of whiffed on the Broncos when Seattle wins 41 to 8. That is not happening. That's not happening. Forty-one to 8. I don't think there's good. I mean, there's only one over touchdown line. That's New England. This was six. It's creeping up.

There's just all the professional money is on Seattle this weekend. You know what? Sometimes the Joe's no more than the pros. Very rare, but yeah, sometimes. Last year, if I recall, last year the Joe's beat the pros because the favorites covered last year. As the league pivots to offense and the star quarterbacks cover the spread, I think the Joe's beat the pros. And I think the average sports fan in America is so much more sophisticated as a gambler now than they were 10 years ago. Everybody used to just take, I'm going to take the favorites.

The average guy I talk to, he's in multiple pools. He knows how to gamble. I mean, I'm just telling you the people I deal with, there are a lot of sharps out. The fans are a thousand times more educated, and I don't think the gap between the pros and Joe's is as, I mean, the pros no more. There's no question. But the Joe's, not sloppy Joe's anymore. You've got a little more refined Joe's. Final story is to the double.

WNBA. Oh, yeah. Caitlin Clark and the fever secured a playoff spot, despite not playing last night, Colin. Indiana qualified for the playoffs for the first time since 2016, a seven-season drought, which was tied for the longest in the history of the WNBA. They're now 17 and 16.

I did just check the calendar. They're playing the L.A. sparks tonight. But they have their first winning record since June of 2019. Like Clark leads the WNBA an assist per game, and the splits before and after the All-Star break are unbelievable. Oh, no, she's a totally different player now. And the fever look good. Right now, they'd be the sixth seed in the playoffs. Well, women's basketball is what men's basketball used to be.

Women's basketball in the draft gets four-year starters and four-year players so they can make impacts. Nobody in the NBA draft makes an impact. They're all like 19. This is what college basketball for men used to be where you'd get a player like, you know, whoever, Duncan Ewing, they'd come in and be Aunt Edwards. It took him to year three until, like, he just figured the league out. So I, the WNBA draft now is better than the NBA draft.

I know the players. At least the top seven or eight players. I knew all of them. Let me ask, and I talked about this Monday when you were out on one of your vacation days. How much WNBA will get into the mainstream as we get into the NFL? and college football season.

Because the WNDA schedule lines up where it's like, oh, the playoffs start in late September. It's like you're competing with the Major League Baseball playoffs. College football? I had a meeting last yesterday afternoon with my guys at my company. And I said, let's go find a Caitlin Clark podcaster. That's, I'm not doing that for NASCAR or baseball. I said, somebody go find me, a Caitlin Clark podcast.

Somebody that's outrageously funny, smart, love. Just to cover Caitlin Clark. That's all they do. Every game, every press conference, I think she's, I mean, I keep joking. Taylor Swift and tennis shoes. This is a movement. She is a vibe.

And she's good. Not Asia Wilson, dominant, but she is really good. And this is what Larry Bird and Magic, and this is what you used to get in the men's. You just don't get it anymore. You just don't get it anymore. Yeah, I mean, she's not dominant, but she's, She is, I mean, it's a Bryce Harper feeling where it's like the league doesn't quite know what to do with Bryce Harper.

He's like the second biggest star, like rookie year in the bigs. You're like, I like Bryce Harper more than anybody else. It's like the league is going to have to figure out next season. They're going to have to plan the schedule and give her all the marquee games. Just like how the NFL puts the best quarterbacks and the best teams on Sunday night football, the big windows. They've got to figure this out for Clark. I mean, I on TV, her numbers are outrating college football games. It's crazy.

Chiefs Ravens kicks off our NFL season. I am, it's under consideration if I do a blazing fire. on Friday. I was not going to do it. A lot of pressure from the staff. Me, man, wah. Whatever. I just, I have no idea what I'm doing.

I mean, it's not, yeah. What's funny is, I lack confidence on it, but I know I'll do my homework and, you know, go one in four, two and three. J-MAC has got five and O written down, got the money spent. You haven't seen anybody playing the preseason. You're guessing at this point,

but you feel, You're not guessing at all. It's a numbers game. I bet numbers not teams. Yeah, you don't bet teams as much as the numbers. I know. Just get on board with the blazing five. You can't go in with this negative mindset.

Well, I think we were just on vacation for like three months. Come on. Shouldn't you come back refreshed and like just chill and lay back? It took a couple days. Labor intensive. Always labor intensive. Steve Sarkeesian coach at Texas, they face Michigan this weekend in the big house. How good is that?

It's going to be on Fox. And I asked him, I said, how does this Texas team stack up to last year and the other Texas teams? You know, I like our team this year. I would think, you know, when you look at our roster, I think we only have four or five guys on our team that were here before I got here. The rest of the players we recruited, a lot of these players have been here for, you know, two, three, and four years now and have really grown up in the culture and understand what we're about and got great leadership. But I also think we've got great depth. I would say the one thing about this year's team is we definitely have more depth than we've had in any of our other years. And our two deep, sometimes you can't tell the difference between our ones and our twos.

And that's great for us. That's great for us right now early in the season. We can play a lot of players, especially in the heat when we're at home, but also for the longevity of this season. You know, to think that we kicked off August 31st and we're hoping to play January 20th. You know, we're going to need all the depth that we have. Quinn Ewers. Now, is there an advantage to play in Michigan? early. Harbaugh's gone new staff, although it's the same kind of physical culture.

This is a tough one. This is a blue blood. It's a big game. It's high leverage. Is it an advantage to play Michigan early? I don't know. You know, there are some, there's plenty of new faces, you know, and I think there's one thing about Michigan that what Coach Harbaugh did and now what Coach Moore is doing is, and you think about this program, it's three consecutive years. they've gone to the college football playoff. Naturally, that's capped off last year with them being national champs. The amount of draft picks that they've had, 13, I believe, last year.

I think they're 41 and 3 in their last 44 games. They've won 16 games in a row. They've won 23 straight games at home in the big house. So this is a great program. As much as it is about this current team they have, it's about the program, the development, what they've done. And so the harder part for us isn't about that they're going to be a quality opponent. It's about some of the new faces. And then naturally from a staff perspective,

Wink Martindale is a defensive coordinator. You know, we've only got one game sample size of him as a defensive coordinator at Michigan. So some of those things can be a little bit more difficult. But at the end of the day, it's a great opportunity, you know, to go play Michigan in the big house. First time ever, Colin, in the regular season that Texas is meeting Michigan. And so when you think about those two iconic programs coming together, and it's pretty humbling for myself that I get to be on the sideline leading the Texas Longhound. What did you say to Quinn yours? You played quarterback in college.

You've had a lot of great quarterbacks. What was the one thing after the season that you told Quinn of yours, hey, you know, I mean, you do this with all your quarterbacks. Here's what we're going to work on in the offseason. What is the one thing that you said, hey, let's get better at this? Because you've made your mark with him. There's no, even diet-wise, you've changed it. What's the one thing you said, Quinn, let's work on this.

Let's make this a point of attack in the offseason. This is your team. Go lead them. Really, it was about leadership. We knew we were going to have to replace all those pieces, and we knew we were going to have to bring in some transfers. We knew we were going to have to rely on some young players on the perimeter, and it was going to take Quinn leading them.

It was going to take Quinn getting the rapport with those receivers and the tight end. It was going to take Quinn stepping up into that leadership role where Jordan Whittington and Jalen Ford and those guys have moved on from, And so that's been our focus, and he's done a tremendous job of that. You can feel his presence. I think he instills confidence and belief into everybody in the organization, not just his teammates. And that's what quarterbacks do. That's why it's the most important position is sports.

You know, if you've ever, you know, you ever been to Gillette, and when Tom Brady took the field, it was almost like a sigh of relief for everybody in the stands, like, okay, Tom's here, we're good to go. And I'm sure it's the same way in Kansas City with Pat Mahomes and so on and so forth. So the quarterback is a powerful guy, not only with his play, but I just think in the presence and the leadership that he provides. A couple of minutes left, I would argue in a 12-team playoff, if I was a coach, I think I'd be more aggressive, because sometimes in college football's history, it's like, I'm not saying anybody coaches not to lose, but I think everybody's going to lose a game potentially.

Even the good teams, is that does the 12-team playoff, does it matter to you at all, or is it like just go Saturdays or Saturdays? I mean, I think it matters. There's still some strategy involved, especially if you have to play in the first round. You'd sure love to have home field advantage and get a home game and not have to go back to Michigan in December, right? And you sure would love to win your conference

and to get a buy in the first round. So, you know, I do think that matters. I don't think we're out here just trying to be reckless and take shots and go forward on four. fourth down. I do think there's a rhyme and reason to everything that we're trying to accomplish and what we're trying to do and develop in our team and in our program. But in the end, I do think it allots you to play in games like this and not feel like, man, if we don't win this game, we have to be perfect the rest of the way. I do think it allots you to expose your

team to some tough environments, to play against quality opponents, to get yourself ready for conference play, and then not have to feel the repercussions if you don't come out on top. On the flip side of that, man, it can be, it can serve as a great springboard. You know, you go into the big house and get this win, what it can do for the rest of your season and the confidence of some of the players in your program that are just getting, you know, maybe their second game of exposure to big time football. 12 and 2 won the Big 12. They're pivoting to the SEC, and I think their roster along with Georgia is the best in that conference. I only got a minute left. I know you coach Texas. Did you just get a couple of minutes of that USC game at all,

Did your TV? How did I know you were going to ask me, man? How did I know you were so giddy? You were so giddy. You probably went for a walk the next morning right around Manhattan Beach, man. And you were just kind of throwing your victory sign up there. Just excited about it. Hook him.

Win! Who's winning? I go to the Falcons winning, but I don't think I'm going to bet the game. I kind of feel it to stay away. I agree. Let's go to another... Oh, Tennessee, Chicago. Man, I like Chicago, but I'm nervous.

Again, this is probably a stay away from me. I want to see what the Caleb hype is. And the Titans, there's a world where they look totally different than anybody anticipates. I know. I know. That's why week one's a nightmare. Their new running backs, Pollard and Tage Spears, who I like a little bit are like quick guys. I don't think they're going to be running the football lot,

but do you trust Will Levis to Chuck and Duck? How about this one? Houston at Indy. I'm on the Colts. I like the Texans. Jacksonville at Miami. Over. Bet the over. Over. There's allegedly a monsoon may show up in Florida,

but that's like every weekend, right? I think I'll lean to Miami with the win there. Raiders at the Chargers, Harbaugh opener. divisional dog. I'm worried about the Chargers here, honestly. I don't think the Raiders are a good team, but I have a feeling they might win this game. What's the line on that?

Three. Well, I think it's going to be competitive. Listen, Raiders don't know they're bad yet. We know, you know, Bartram Inchu is not like a total bum. He's capable. He could go in, you know, I don't know, was it going to be 50-50 fans, or is it going to be like 60-40 Raiders? 60-40 Raiders.

Not great. Denver at Seattle. Seattle. Yeah, I think, I like Denver. But I like Seattle this. Seattle this weekend. Oh, Dallas at Cleveland. I don't know.

This is a good one. I might have to ride with Dallas. Probably not. There's just so many, I don't even know what's going on with Cleveland. Just Sean Watson. What was the last time he threw a class? I don't even know. I think I'm going with Dallas.

It's just, I have answers with Dallas. There's limitations with Dallas, but I know what Dallas is. I don't know what Cleveland is offensively. Jaden Daniels at Baker Mayfield. I like Washington here. I think weirdly, you know, we have, we spent a lot of time together, and you've kind of convinced me. I'm not the kind of guy who gets convinced,

but you've sold me so hard on Washington for like five months. I like them here. They could be good this season. I don't, maybe you're right. Rams at Lions. I think Lions. I love the Rams, but the Lions in this spot, really good. Jets at the Niners.

The Jets are the play, betting-wise. Yeah. No question. Can they win that outright? Oh. Just think about how I'll be on Tuesday on this show. I told you. I can already feel a cold coming.

Right, right, yeah. Good idea. Well, I tell you, those late games Sunday, Cowboys, Browns on Fox, Rams, Lions, Sunday night, Monday, Jet, San Francisco. Why did you skip over Panther Saints? You just can't talk about those teams. Nobody cares. I like Carolina in New Orleans. I like Carolina.

Arizona Buffalo? Can Kyler Murray work some magic on the road here? What's the line on that? It's like six, six and a half. I would take Arizona in the points. I don't know if winning, but I'd take Arizona in the points. We haven't seen Josh Allen without digs in a while, Colin. This is good today.
