Woody Johnson, my band. I was thinking Woody a toy story. You know, same thing. Both wear hats. A Jets owner, Woody Johnson, may want to bring it a new quarterback in the draft over Aaron Rogers if the season keeps going sideways. I don't

buy that. First of all, Aaron doesn't want it to end like this in New York. My guess is he wouldn't have a terribly big market if he put himself out there. The Jets are worse with him. They were four and three through seven games last or they're two and five, and the Packers are significantly better since he left. So what's his market?

I mean, Tom Brady left New England didn't have a huge market. What's Aaron's he's prickly, he's older, he's just not as good? I don't think he has much of a market, although I'm sure there's desperate like a Carolina out there that may go get him. Aaron may not want to play for Carolina. So, and the other thing, when you fire Robert Sala, which was really a dumb move and

looks worse by the day, it turned off really good candidates. Like Mike Belichick, no chance to get him. Mike Vrable, unless he was desperate. I don't think he is. I know Mike. Mike's not taking that job. So Aaron's sticking around, and he didn't want it to end this badly. So, and the other thing, the Jets, and they never think long term, is because

Jalen Hertz, Joe Burrow, Dak Prescott, and Trevor Lawrence, maybe all are looking for a coach. It's not the best option. This is one of those years where there could be like four or five good coaching openings. Last year there was one. The Chargers, and it wasn't a perfect job opening,

but it was damn good. They had a left tackle, star quarterback, and a bosa. You're like, that's pretty good. That's pretty good job. Matt LeFleur got the Jets job. You were like, like a Darren Rogers in his prime. good organization, draft developed, well, that's a pretty good job. The Jets is not a good job.

Now, I don't think Dallas is either. Jacksonville is always going to have limitations, but in Cincinnati's got a cheap owner. So there's no, but Philadelphia is a great job. They're going to get the best candidate. Owner, GM, Jalen Hertz roster, Philadelphia is getting the best candidate. Whoever that is, could be Belichick, could be Vrabel. That's a big boy job. Jets, you know, the Jets, you ever know somebody that's like, you know, the Jets job is, and they're going to be,

they're going to be wondering, why don't we attract the best candidates? Well, you become the 48-year-old guy who's single and can't understand why? Well, you think the earth is flat, you're a chain smoker, and you hoard things. Let's start with that. This is not a good job, and you fired your best coach. And now your defense isn't as good. And Aaron's blaming everybody. But Aaron, it's not a good job.

So you're going to end up getting somebody who probably, like an Adam Gase or a Robert Sala, comes from an organization, you know, who's Baltimore's hot assistant? You'll get something like that. That's what you got with Rex Ryan, right? The Ravens were not going to give Rex Ryan the job, so Rex took over the jets. That's what you'll get. And sometimes that guy, like DiBico Ryan, from the Niners, is a home run. Or Kevin O'Connell from the Rams, a good organization.

that guy can be a home run. I'm not saying, I mean, I don't think Sala was great, but he was the best coach on your staff. And immediately he leaves the building and your defense isn't as good. And it's got good players. So it's also a very, very soft draft for quarterbacks. It's a great, it's a really good pass rusher draft. Defense events, several, some really nice corners. Last year there was like one first round corner of note. there's four or five first round corners, some offensive tackles, got some defense events. It's not a great draft at the top. It's kind of weak at the top. There's about six, seven really absolute home runs. But you've got four and a half to five rounds of good players, but it's not a good quarterback draft. That's indisputable.

So I don't think they're moving off Aaron. And I also think if any quarterback had a, a very quarterback. veto vote, you would not pick this franchise. You know, it's like Russell, well, a handful of players, quarterbacks have the ability to say I'm not going there. This would not be the place you'd take. Be sure to catch

All right, let's start with your favorite QB, Jared Goff. You got to give Goff a lot of credit.

The Lions are surging. This trade for Stafford has worked out for them. The Lions are 5 in 1 this season, and Dan Campbell compared him to a future Hall of Famer on the Rich Eisen Show. I was fortunate to be around Drew Brees as a player, but as a coach, you know, for a combination of six years. And, you know, when you're around that type of player, it's rare. There's things about golf that remind me of him.

And, you know, he's just, man, he's got a workman's attitude. He's blue color in that way. A quiet confidence. He doesn't get frazzled. He's tough. He's just, man, he's seeing it. And because of that, we put a lot on him. The other thing about Jared Goff, he still feels young.

He's been around a while. I mean, what's he in eight years? almost a 10-year veteran. I mean, Kirk Cousins feels like, he's been around forever. Jared Goff feels like a fairly new number one pick. Jared has taken a lot of snaps in a lot of big games. Sunday night, Monday night, playoff, NFC championship, Super Bowl.

The dude's seen every coverage in the league, and he is clearly a hard worker because he keeps getting better. Yeah. Those are almost purdy-like numbers. Last two seasons for Jared Goff. It's interesting. He's got the, The San Francisco stacked deck with the best offensive line in the league.

The difference is... Two awesome running back. His first two franchises were rebuilds when he arrived. Two geniuses, McVeigh and Ben Johnson as well, play callers. Geniuses. Ben Johnson, middle of a flight, said I don't want the job that had to turn around the Gulfstream. Well, not a genius move. Well, that move was not genius, but offensively, he's been excellent.

It just feels like, you know, golf has been very, very good, but... I think your life has been so cushy that you don't appreciate people who get inserted into things called rebuilds. I mean, your life has been, let's be honest, you're shooting jumpers, you don't have to play defense. Your wife is the brains of the family. You're out of your mind. But in all serious, listen, he's been pretty good. This is a dangerous week for them against the mighty Titans. Well, you know, I will say this.

This in a weird way, coming off that win, that was a. incredibly physical, emotional game. The Titans are the side. I don't know if they'll win. You don't get them moving off D-Hop. I mean, listen, this is the biggest spread that Dan Campbell's been as a favorite. What's the number nine? Eleven.

Yeah, I don't like that. But now, here's the thing. Are you betting the Titans? If I had to bet, I would bet the Titans. We don't even know who the starting quarterback is. Is it Rudolph or Levis? I don't know. Is Levis healthy?

I just, I see the trades they're making, right? The linebacker, they just moved off. The Titans. Titans are, they're kind of... They're sellers. They're sellers right now. So, what's the vibe in the locker room? Hey, man, can't wait to count down.

Eight more weeks until I'm done here. Season over, like, do they start to mail it in? And the Lions beat them 45-7. By the way, easy to blame old Mike Ravel. This team is selling parts off before the trade deadline. Before Halloween. That's pretty new territory. Let's go to...

Let's stay in the NFC, North Colin, the Vikings. They're coming off that L to the Lions first loss of the season, but good news, perhaps. It sounds like for Thursday night football against the Rams, T.J. Hawkinson may be able to play. It is early. Here's Kevin O'Connell on his status. It's early. We'll make that determination, you know, kind of as these next couple days, we obviously, as we put together, game plans, want to have a good feel for that, but, you know, very much a possibility. And if we can have them great, if not, I do feel very positive about the Colts game for sure. But I'm not in a place yet to rule him out quite yet.

I totally forgot Hawkinson was out. They've missed Jordan Madison at times. Aaron Jones are running back. When they're fully formed, that's a pretty dangerous Vikings team. There is an argument that the three best teams in the NFC are Detroit, Green Bay, and Minnesota. That's never happened before. all in the same division. But the counter would be, hey, it's week seven.

I know. Check in with me in week 14 when CMAQ is back. When Debo is back. I mean, we knew the division would be good. I think Chicago and Minnesota, Minnesota is better than we thought. Chicago's a little better. I mean, Green Bay and Detroit, this is what we thought they were. Chicago is slightly better than I thought. I said, 7-8 wins.

I still think if you look at their schedule in about three weeks, they're going to end up 7-8 wins. I just keep an eye on the Eagles. They're that horse in the race that's kind of back and waiting. You're waiting for them to make their run. The schedule loosens up second half of the season. They could be the number one seat. Don't rule out the Eagles.

Now watch them get smashed by the Bengals this weekend. But final story, Colin, to your fake ID of college football, the Colorado Buffaloes. They've got three straight road wins after the week two lost in Nebraska. Well, during his weekly press conference, Dion Sanders talked about how much he and the Buffaloes, love playing on the road. I think we like being the underdogs and we like being those type of people. We like to be booed and they say it and ate it.

That turns us on. It turns us on. It's kind of sexy, matter of fact. It is kind of nice when you hit that J walking down the court and people are booing and hissing. So you're going back to your basketball days? No, just randum.

my head. No, I think it's, I will say this. They have developed a run game and Warren Sapp on the defensive line. They were a lot of flash, a lot of heat, but not a lot of, there was not a lot of meat in the sandwich last year. It's like the D-line in the run game. They can now get physical and give you all the sizzle. Do you get the vibe that this Colorado run, if you will, enhances his chances of staying, or does it bolster his NFL stock with some teams? Oh, Dion's winning? They were like a six and a half win team I think recorded in Vegas. I don't know. I never thought when he got the job. I never thought Dion Sanders would be a 25-year coach at Colorado.

That's not what this ever felt like. No. J-Mack with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Hurd-Lie News. Well, we're very fortunate. Minnesota Vikings in what is an excellent Thursday night game tomorrow

face to Los Angeles Rams. The Rams are all over these NFL rumors with Matt Stafford. I don't buy that one. Cooper Cup. I sort of buy that one. And Albert Breer is covering that game and now joins us live in studio. Senior NFL reporter, lead content guy, Monday morning quarterback covering the NFL for two decades. Look at this. I mean, you got a sports jacket on. And like fresh off a six hour flight. So not bad. No, no, no, no. That's how you're used to seeing me, right? Like in a T-shirt or whatever. I dressed up for you this time. I appreciate it. So let's address a big game tomorrow. And there's been

the Matt Stafford. By the way, they don't have any guaranteed money after next year. So they got about two years left for them, which I think you should just load it up and see if you can win with him. Do you buy those rumors? Stafford, not now. Maybe after the season.

The contract sets up in a way where if the size decides it's time to move on after the year, they can do that. So I don't buy it over the next two weeks. Now, based on how the rest of the season goes and where the team looks like it's at and whether or not you're going to be building around your first and second year players or you're going to try to go all in again, I think some of that stuff could determine where they go a quarterback, and they do have flexibility.

Like they gave him a little bump this year. And I think part of it was the mutual understanding, like after the year we're going to revisit. Yeah. And so, you know, I don't think that. I don't think it's in a bad place right now, but I certainly don't think like that there's been any hard decision made on what they're going to do in 2025. Now, Cooper Cup, I think a place like Pittsburgh where if Russell's as good as he was in the second half, Jets, pretty good defensive personnel, I could see them saying,

can we get like a 12-target eight-catch guy with Pickens, with our power run game? And Pittsburgh now is sitting there thinking, we may win this division. I can see Pittsburgh making a move so these rumors on Cooper Cup feel legit to me? They are and you know what it is it's funny because like teams are very sensitive to the idea that they'd be shopping anybody and the Rams really don't have to shop Cooper Cup

teams that need receivers are going to call the Rams and look at the record his reputation obviously as clutch as he's been if you want a guy in the playoffs for the playoffs that's the guy I know what they've told other teams is it's going to cost more than Devante Adams cost So Devante Adams was a three that turns into a two.

You'd naturally think then they need at least a second round pick. That's pretty rich considering his health history. And that's the thing is like I think a lot of people look at these trays and they see like, you know, the big like 25-year-old star getting traded for two first-round picks. And like, I can't believe you'd trade them for a three or four. But that's the price, you know. And the Raiders had a really hard time trying to find anything approximating a two for Devante Adams. And I think it's sort of the same thing with Koubante Adams.

Super Cup where the Rams, you have to look at both sides of it, right? So the Rams see it as we're trading a franchise icon, a guy who scored the winning points of Super Bowl, a guy who was part of Sean McVeigh's first draft class. You loved the locker room. Like just one of the guys that was really a part of establishing us, of us establishing ourselves in Los Angeles. And flipping that for a third or fourth round pick doesn't look great, you know? Whereas if you're one of the teams acquiring them, you're looking at him, 31 years old,

can't stay healthy, lots of mileage. This may be just a one-year rental. We'll see if we can have him beyond this year. And he's a little more limited than he was, say, two or three years ago. So I think there will be more trade talks with Cooper Cup. My question is whether or not the value is going to match up, right? Like whether or not the way the Rams value is going to match up with a way some other team coming in, like maybe Pittsburgh values him.

So Mike Tomlin, it's very funny. So I want to play this, but I don't know if you've seen it. made me laugh. So Tomlin is as good at a microphone as perhaps any coach in the history of the live. Unbelievable. Yeah. Gruden before him and now Tomlin, they're just good talkers. So watch, and we don't have to

play the entire bite, guys, but watch Tomlin's laughing. He's laughing when he is asked about off a 24-0 second half in Russell. Is Russell starting in the next game? Yeah. Here he is. He's scheduled to take first team rest

when we begin tomorrow. We'll see what a week leads That's enough. That's great. He's scheduled to take it. Yeah. So he's just laughing at it, but I will say, I was wrong. Russell in that second half was excellent. Yep.

He threw to the right guys. Tomlin was totally engaged. Were you shocked? What did you make of it? What did it mean? I was surprised, yeah. I mean, like based on what I had heard and how he looked in practice and kind of where the rest of that building was,

I wasn't surprised by the way he looked in the first quarter. That's what I thought. Yeah, I was like, oh, well, there it is. That's why people on the coaching staff, the locker room, that's why they wanted to keep Justin in there. And that's why, I mean, to borrow Mike's phrase, he had to go Lone Ranger on this. I also understand Mike's logic, though.

And I think Mike's logic is pretty simple here, is if you go with Justin Fields there, you cannot go back to Russell Wilson. If you go to Justin Fields there, like, when he's healthy, you might not be able to keep Russell Wilson on the roster. On the other hand, if you go with Russell Wilson and you give that a swing, well, then it's very easy to go to Justin Fields if that doesn't work, right? Like if Russell Wilson looks in the second and third and fourth quarters,

the way he looked in the first quarter, you gave him a shot. You gave him a shot. It's very easy to go back to Justin Field. So I think essentially what Mike Tomlin did was give himself two cracks at it. He thinks he's got a really good team and that Russell could bring something that Justin wasn't bringing to them, which was getting the ball downfield. That showed sort of activated George Pickens a little. little bit. And now we see if it's sustainable or not. I'm not convinced that this is going to

look the same way over the next month with teams having tape on him and everything else and knowing what they're going to be trying to do with Russell Wilson and their quarterback. But at least you give yourself two shots at getting the quarterback position right. And again, you got to give Tomlin a ton of credit because that was, that decision was going against what a lot of people in the building thought he should do. Okay, so I'm not insinuating what I'm about to say is the truth. what I am suggesting is it wouldn't shock me that Jerry feeds

Akeman. Jerry feeds Michael and says, have at it. I'm not saying it happened. I am not in any way. But Irvin, Michael Irvin comes out and says, this team's soft. Troy, a couple days later, said they're lazy. I'm not saying they're wrong

and I'm not saying they're fed. But the way Jerry backed Akeman saying, boy, that's credible. I mean, that guy's a good. great broadcast. It's like, and then Jerry yesterday said, you know, our play calling's been bad. I mean, hold on one second. Okay, so I want to play this.

So this is the play calling. And again, we don't have to play the entire bite, but just play Jerry ripping the play calling. The types of things that we all think we should be looking at is, well, we're designing bad plays or we're designing bad concepts. The facts are that there's some of that, but there's also some of execution.

There's some of the talent. I really do like our talent. I like our young talent. Yeah, of course, he likes the young talent. He helped draft it. So now McCarthy literally almost rolls his eyes answering the question. Again, we don't have to roll all of it, but roll this. Here's Mike.

I talk to Jerry all the time. you know we've we've had time to go through the cell scout um so i can't really i didn't see the comments specifically so um but i don't think we have bad concepts in that place but um i'll go back and check but uh no no i mean you know we're not where we want to be i'll go back and check i mean i i've always thought jerry's crazy like a fox though like i've always thought that there's he says a lot of things i i think there's a design a lot of the things that he does now is all over the place but like i don't think he does things without what his team needs in mind right like so i think he's felt the like if you

look at the way he's operated since the end of last season it's been constantly turning the heat up the all-in comment even though they didn't really spend in the off season sending mike mccarthy into a contract year which is very unconventional making dac prescott and cd lamb wait until the summer to get their deals done, not paying Micah Parsons now, not making a real attempt to pay Michael Parsons now. I think he felt like I've got to turn the heat up on everyone in the organization because everybody here has gotten too comfortable. And now he sees it in the middle of the season and it still doesn't look good. So what's he going to do? He's not turning the heat down. He's turning the heat back up. And the other thing last week on the radio, right? Like where it sounds like he is, man,

he's coming after people's jobs, even if it's just the radio guy, right? Like, man, he's coming after people's jobs and it's tense. And so, you know, I think, again, Jerry can be all over the place, but I do think there's usually a design the way Jerry talks, the way Jerry presents himself. And I just have noticed this pattern over the course of the last seven, eight, nine months of Jerry turning the heat on people that work for him. Okay, we're just starting here.

How lucky are we to get him in studio fresh off of flight? Okay, so I did this yesterday, a warm smoking and four-alarm fire for our coaches. I think when you get to week 7-8, I mean, Robert Saul is fired, so every year one guy gets fired too early, and then about three weeks later, somebody else gets whacked, and then by week 15, it's all bets her off. So I like, like, for instance, I would not fire Dayball, Stefansky, or Zach Taylor. I think they're all above average. I think Stafansky's holding that thing together. It's a mess.

Dennis Allen Peterson, Nick Siriani, I think I'd move off of, and I thought Peterson would be a hit. Mike McCarthy, with all this Jerry stuff, Troy Aikman, I mean, it just... It's hard to see him surviving. Yeah. But is there, is anything that jumps out to you about my warm smoking, four-alarm fire coaching hospital?

Yeah, I mean, I would take Zach Taylor off of that. So you don't think he's going to get it? I don't think so. I just, I know the M. of that franchise. They don't like paying coaches who aren't there. They don't like paying coaches who aren't there. They also have been very, very patient.

Marvin Lewis was there for 16 years. He basically got two runs, you know, with two different quarterbacks. I like Zach. They are, the Browns are very into the model they have right now. And I think that that's the important piece to remember with Cleveland is it's not just Andrew Barry, Kevin Stefanski, or Paul D. Podesta. It's like the way that it's set up. They really like the way that it's set up.

ownership wanted analytics heavy model, all those guys buy into it. And I think you can look at it and say, if they had stuck with Baker Mayfield or they had gotten another competent quarterback, they'd be fine now. And I think last year proves it, right? Yeah. Dayball is an interesting one because the Maras didn't want to fire Joe Judge in 2021. And then that press conference happened. And the heat of being in New York got to Joe Judge a little bit.

and then they couldn't bring them back. So, like, I don't, I think Dayball, I think the Giants really like some of the things that Joe Shane and Brian Daiball had, have done and would like to give them the chance to go get a quarterback. But there's no telling how he's going to handle the next three months. And when the heat turns up in New York, if this, if the record gets worse,

again, I think they want, I think they want to stick it out. Andrew Thomas is a massive loss. That might be one of the biggest losses in the NFL this year. Oh, no, no. the malique neighbors they're functional yeah they're not a functional offense without thomas right and so like i like i don't know what the path is out for them i think how brian dable handles it how he engages his locker room determines if he stays but i think they want to keep him so i think those three names at the bottom of the list are in the right places because those teams very much want to keep those guys

in place um let me throw this out yeah Dan Campbell and Siriani basically Philly was a better job than Detroit and four years later Dan Campbell has built a monster truck and that was the worst job and supposedly the worst hire and Siriani goes to kind of a VIP lounge of coaching spots

I mean they've fired Super Bowl winning coaches and it last year it's a tire fire And this year, he had to have his wrist slap for yelling at fans. I like so much about Philadelphia. He doesn't feel like he's got the gravitas to be the equals. And then you replace the coordinators, and that to me is always a bad sign. When they're bringing in coordinators who don't have background with you, Vic Fangio is a really good defensive coordinator.

You don't need me to tell you that. Kellan Moore accomplished a lot as an OC in Dallas, but neither of those guys had connections to Nixiriani. So somebody told him. So he walked the plank last year. They thought about firing him. I think if they had fired him, they would have brought in a Belichick or a Vrabel.

They don't do it. They replace both as coordinators. They bring in guys from the outside who he doesn't have background with. It just, if it doesn't go right, then who's left, right? Like who's left to pay for it? And they're so invested. That's the other thing you got to remember. Like, that roster, if you look at it,

It's an incredibly talented roster, right? But it's set up in a way where in two or three years, like, there's a huge bill coming. And they're very leveraged to win right now. And that's why I think the Vrables and the Belichicks makes sense for them because they need a guy if they're going to move off of Sierra- Can't be running on the job.

Who comes in right away and makes a difference right away and can win right away. Because that group of players, the way the contract set up and everything else, that team is built to win over the next two or three years and then they're going to have to retool everything. everything. So I think Philly's a really interesting one. There's a lot of pressure on Nick.

And, you know, again, like, was that a sign of the pressure? Was that a sign of the pressure being on him of coaching in Philadelphia? Yeah. That's a big job. Yeah. I would argue could be the simultaneously top three best

job and the hardest. Yeah. I mean, sports talk radio is massively influential in Philly. Well, think about this. Think about the coaches who've gone through there, right? So Andy Reed gets fired. I it was time when he got fired. Chip Kelly, 10 wins, 10 wins, five wins, fired. Ow.

Right? Doug Peterson wins their first Super Bowl, fired three years later. Nick Siriani wins the Super Bowl in 22. At the end of 23, he almost got fired, and he's in the hot seat in 24. There's no other... The NFC East is like the SEC. If you think about the pressure that's on guys in that... Guy, guys in that division...

Some of it's influenced by the intense media and fan relentless criticism. I mean, Dallas, Mike McCarthy won 12 games three years in a row. If Mike McCarthy wins 12 games three years in a row in Jacksonville, they're building a statue of it. In Dallas, in Dallas is not good enough. And Dallas is not good enough. And so, you know, there's definitely a more intense pressure we're talking about dayball, right? Like, well, the giants who were the model of stability in the NFL, Ben McAdoo gets two years, Pat Schumer gets two years, Joe Judge gets two years, Brian Dayball's in year three now. So it's just, it's a more intense environment in that division.

And, yeah, I mean, like the Eagles job is, it takes a certain type of person to win in Philly. Okay, we're out in two and a half minutes. Brock Pretty so wonky against Kansas City. Yeah. Last 12 games, 6 and 6. Passer rating like 80. Have they made a decision on his future? They plan to pay him.

They plan to pay him. And I think what you have to look at again is, sort of, and this is the great thing about where they're at right now, you wouldn't ask for Brandon and I. You to get hurt, Debo, Samuel, to get hurt, Trent Williams to hold out, all that stuff, but it's giving you a very real view of what it could look like in two or three years, because this core of players is going to age out. Right. And so does Brock Purdy grow into it over the course of this year where there are guys moving in and out of the lineup where you do need a little bit more from him. And I think we have seen signs of what sort of quarterback he can be.

Again, I think if Brock Purdy weren't a seventh round pick, I think we would be looking at him completely different now. I don't think a lot of the questions that are being asked of Brock Purdy would be asked about him if he was the fifth pick in the draft. I think they're asked about him because of where he was drafted and people can't let go of that and look at him as being very limited physically. I think he can play and they think he can play and they plan to pay him now, again, subject to the rest of the year, because we're going to get a very good, very clear look at what it looks like when he has a little. little bit less around. Did you hear Jay Mack? Mm-hmm. Yeah, Jay Mack, if he was drafted, is the number five pick, he'd be six, four, and

move faster. He is such a, he is the biggest Brock Purdy hater in sports. I'm not. I just think I almost... This is going to sound weird. Look at his legs. I'm serious. Like, look at his legs. Like, you, like, this guy's seen as being physically limited, right? Right. Better athlete than

you think, more powerful than you think, look at his legs. Like, he is sort of built, like Russell Wilson, like when he was when he was really rolling in Seattle, What everybody would say about him is he's short. He's not small, right? If you look at Brock Purdy's bill, he's not as small person as you think. I actually think that I think internally the decision has been made to extend him.
