So when you retired, is there anything now you do? Because Tom couldn't do that when he played. Yeah. Is there anything now you do that you didn't do as a player? Yeah. Snowboard. What you do? Yeah, I grew up snowboarding.

I was a northern California kid. I used to go to Tahoe every year. And as soon as I went to Ohio for Kent State, I didn't snowboard until then. And then as soon as I retired, I went down and went to Aspen and snowboarded for the first time, like riding a bike. Like riding a bike. Really? Never forgot it. No, but it was crazy because the last time I was snowboarding, I was probably like 165 pounds and doing, you know, you're like a little gymnast kid. Now I'm like 200 pounds.

It was like, oh, this is a lot different. You're moving more inventory. Oh, my knee, I can feel that. Rotation. Oh, the ankles aren't as flexible. So we go into the playoffs here in a week. Do you miss the intensity of that? Yes.

Yeah, you missed that because the urgency and that corner animal mentality kind of just shoots through the roof because the game is in the playoffs. I always explain this to people. When you get to preseason, you do training camp. training camp first day of pads you guys hit it's faster than when you don't have pads then you have that first that first preseason game against a guy that you haven't been practicing against for two weeks and it's just that much faster and then you get to the regular season when you shape the team and it's like all right this is this is pro football and then you get to the playoffs and

each round of the playoffs it just shoots through the roof because you got guys that are leaving everything on the field i mean you either win or you go home so you know there's there's guys there's a lot of calculated risk in the regular season. You play for your money in the regular season. You play for your name in the postseason. It's interesting because I think of your dynasty and I think of those Raven games where I thought Baltimore had a little more talent.

It's a little more, and you beat him a lot. And I think, not in the much as deal, I think of the Peyton Manning matchups. And like, you know, I don't get nervous watching sports very often, but you were like, you could, palpable, I'd be like, oh, Peyton looks a little, he doesn't like this snow. He didn't like it. So there are, we were talking about this.

a lot of the dynasties have been Pittsburgh cold weather, New England cold weather, the teams that went, San Francisco Bay Weather, Green Bay, Philly, you start looking at cold. This weekend in the Northeast, if Miami had to go play up in that crap, it'd be like, did you guys feel as a northern team when you'd see a dome team come up? When you'd see Miami come up, did you feel like this is ours? Yeah, we practiced in the elements, whether it was raining, pouring. Always? Always.

Bill, put your it on and get outside. You know what I mean? Like, that's what he would say. He goes, it's snowing. I'm letting you know it's snowing. Put your stuff on and let's go. It's a good opportunity for you to take advantage of this situation of being in the weather, which we play in weather.

And, you know, whenever you had it, like, whenever we would play those Denver, those Denver teams when we were going to Denver against Peyton Man. No, we were praying. It was when Peyton Manning was in Denver, we were praying that it was going to be a snow storm, windy, and every time we played them, they beat us twice there. It was 75 in Sunny in January. And we're like, God, you know, but we were very acclimated to weather

and we did feel like we had an advantage anytime we played a team that wasn't used to weather in weather. So I had said this with Belichick, he and KraftMeet Monday, that Bill is intimidating. He's got the bag. He's got the legacy. I don't know if he can work with a young offensive coach. I think you work under Bill,

and Bill sort of sets the tone at practice games personnel. So to me, you're going to stay with Bill. You've got to rent the Band-Aid off. But the idea you can bring in a bunch of young guys, and Bill's going to be like, oh, yeah, tell me who to draft. That doesn't feel like Bill. Am I wrong? I don't think you're wrong.

Yeah, this is going to be an interesting situation. You know, I heard your take, you know, Bill's notorious for cutting guys a year, two, three before they're out of their crime. That's his thing. And Bill is the first one to tell you that this is a production business. That's what he told us every time. I mean, I remember going in and negotiating with him on my last deal. He goes, what do you want? I go, I want 20 for the next two.

He goes, Jules, you just had, I just won Super 1VP. And he goes, look, Jules, you're 33 years old, 32 years old. you're coming off an ACL. Like, I can't give you that. Like, that's the kind of guy is. So this is going to be a very tough conversation because they're both going to lay out their points. Mr. Kraft and Jonathan are probably going to say,

look at what we've done here in this situation or this side of the ball or this, whatever. He's going to have his, and it's going to have to come out somewhere in between. And hopefully they could do it professionally because they both needed both of each other for such a long time. and, you know, it's been such a great thing for such a long time. You just hope it's handled properly.

I was saying this that outside of Brady, but even Brady felt like a team guy, is that the playoffs, you know, star quarterbacks tend to do well. You have an advantage. But there is sort of a working class ethos to the playoffs, where fewer turnovers win, better tackling wins. like I look at Baltimore and I'm like they're just hard Baltimore's hard and they've done it with a star

quarterback and I do think I look at them and and I just feel like that's a hard physical team that's the best team I've seen not just results but I always felt with New England you were all hard there was a lot of overachievers and I don't the word I'm using is wrong but the playoffs is a lot of testing a man's soul

The weather sucks. Practice is hard. Everybody's kind of hurt. Everybody's like, and I think Baltimore's a hard, but great team, and I think it matters now. Am I crazy talk? No, the one thing that I get scared with Baltimore is that they get bored with teams sometimes.

They lose two or three games a year that they have no business losing. And then they go and do what they did against San Francisco and blow them out. You know, they're one of those teams where, you know, they could start kind of slow, they miss on a third down, or they don't have a good red area plan for that specific opening drive, and then all of a sudden the team jumps out of them or, you know, last year against, you know, Miami where they were beating up Miami, they came back. Like, I feel like they just get bored sometimes, and they get lack of focusy. I think that's the only thing that can really stop them. I do think San Francisco losing to them the way they did was a great thing for San Francisco. That's what I thought. You know, when you get to see Lamar in person, I mean, it's good to have that on film.

You get to go car on car when you're preparing them for the next time, as we would say. Same cars, different license plate. Now you get the same cars. We get, you know, film of your guys on their guys, schemes, and you can do a whole lot with that. So I think that was a good thing, but it's definitely Baltimore's to lose. Does pressure matter? Now, again, it's funny because you guys were so efficient in big games. And when I watched the college games this week, I could see how nervous Michigan was.

It looked at that first pass. And I'm thinking, oh, those are 19-year-old kids. How do you avoid, and you were often a home favorite, how do you avoid nerves and anxiety? you lean on your preparation you know whenever I would get nervous individually before a game which I would get nervous every game I would just get on my tip sheet our coach would make us a tip sheet of the play call sheet

you go over and you just kind of it's like explain what it is a tip sheet is pretty much your call sheet has all the boxes of what your first and second down plays are your third down plan your red area plan your four point play plan your two minute plan before half your two-minute plan before and end the game, just to kind of get your mind in condition for when the situation pops,

I already knew what the play was coming because of what we practiced that week, then it allows me to think on my opponent and how do I make my job better for that specific play. So I would always lean on that, just kind of cramming before the test, so to say, whenever I was nervous and whenever you had a great week of prep, whenever you had a great week of prep, it always showed on the game film. You know, these games are all decided by a play.

I go back to a game in which, I think it was third quarter, you threw a touchdown pass, you were out in the flat. And I saw Detroit the other day against Dallas did a fake punt, and I've always wondered this, because you occasionally would be part of a huge trick play

in a crisis moment late in the third. And I always think to myself, when you break the huddle, how do you not have a tell, like in poker? Like, this is the game. Did you think about a lot of times, this play could happen, it will be the biggest play in the game. You knew going against Baltimore. The game's going to be close. Yeah. It's not going to be a shootout.

You know what the game's going to be. This is going to be the moment. You pass it one time. I don't even know if you can pass in warmups because they're looking at you. Yeah. Right? Yeah. but I would always

so with that play in in the game plan I would always play catch with Brady before the series so I kind of would always kind of dial in and try to get a couple warmups in but I that was a huge thing I originally I was going to take off my glove because I didn't like throwing with

the glove on but then you know if I take off my glove there's something up you never know and so yeah you would try to make everything be as normal normal as possible We used to have with those kind of plays

or a double move route or a double move, we always used to have this thing. You got to be like Pacino. You have to be a great actor. You got to be a great actor. You know what I mean? It was one thing that me and Brady always used to say,

like, Joel, Pacino, if I was doing like a slow go, you know what I mean? Make them eat the slant first. You know, or in these trick plays, you got to make everything, there's a little active. involved. Yeah, absolutely.

So as hot seat, you know, we have all these coaches, you know, I was saying McCarthy's funny, our staff has this. If you put Mike McCarthy and John Harbaugh's history up, it's the same thing. I mean, division titles, winning for everything. The difference is

Mike was in Green Bay where you don't have an owner, which is weird, it's cool to have an owner and go to Robert Kraft and say, we need an edge rusher. We've got to write a check. Green Bay didn't have that. Now he's in Dallas a little bit of a meddling owner. Harbaugh's had, Steve Bouchardy's like, is it, like one of the five owners in the league that's one of the grownups. And so, but it's funny, if Harbaugh loses in the, he wins a playoff game and loses, nobody's firing Harbaugh.

But if McCarthy doesn't win his second, let's say he beats Green Bay at home, goes to Detroit and loses, McCarthy's on the hot seat. And I'm like, isn't he Harbaugh? What's the difference? Dallas Cowboys. So you think it's just that? It is definitely just that. I mean, we're on Fox. We talk about the Cowboys every day, baby.

This is America's team. The light shine a little brighter when you're in Dallas, when you're the quarterback and the head coach. That's just how it goes. And for people to say, well, Harbaugh and Harbaugh won a Super Bowl with the team he's with right now. You know, for whatever reason, McCarthy's never won a Super Bowl in Dallas. Dallas haven't been to a Super Bowl in 30 years since Michael Irvin retired.

That's a long time for the most valued sports organization in the world. So it's tough being the Dallas Cowboys head coach. It's kind of like being a Notre Dame head coach. It's one of those destination spots or what else, Ohio State. They're about to fire their coach who's got four losses in his career. I mean, there's certain brands. where you have to win. And if you don't, you know, you're on the hot seat.

State tax in Massachusetts eats up. Was there ever a month? despite your success. You thought, you know, Miami's got, I'm getting old. I'd feel away. Did you ever have a moment that you thought about other places and thought, man, that guy's making that? Nobody in New England got overpaid.

No, because, you know, at free agent times of my career, teams that were interested in me that, you know, were offering more money or something along those lines. like what are you going to go and have a new coaching staff in two years? Like the security, the familiarity, you know, the message of what the mindset was for the organization was something that, like, I didn't want to leave. And by the time you get, you're in your ninth, tenth, year, like, do I want to go learn a new playbook? Do I want to go, you know, it's a lot of work. you then become a rookie again. You got to get the flash cards out.

You got to learn the personnel groups. You got to learn the four. Because I only played in one system. You know, I didn't know the number system. I didn't know the West Coast system. You're sitting here and like, it's not a lot, but. It's a lot. It's a lot where you want to be a technician.

You know what I mean? So I didn't really think about it. The older you got with the practice, that's when it was hard. The Bill Runja. Yeah, you know, it's January in practice. You know, you just had a knee scope, and it's 21 degrees with the wind chill of eight, and you don't have the heaters outside on practice. You don't get the jackets outside for practice.

It's like it's miserable. You know, I remember as a rookie, you go in there. You wouldn't wear sleeves. You'd be a tough guy by the end. I mean, I was looking like the little kid Randy from the Christmas story. You all snowed up. It was nuts. J-Mack, you didn't have much experience with winning as a Jets fan,

but this is what winning looks like when you retire. Look at that. I thought you were going to say winning as a kid. That's why I'm so competitive now as an adult athlete. Julian, we're looking for guys on our men's basketball team. Basketball, I'm a football player. He's physical. You guys are all finesse.

You guys are fruit-frue drinks after you win a big game. By the way, Julian, Belichick landing in Carolina, yes or no? No shot. I don't think so. A better chance of retirement? David Teper does not, you can't respect coaches if you fire a guy with that roster after nine games. Yeah. I think this, if coach goes somewhere else, the situation, the roster, everything's going to have to be.

Washington. New owner. Would Brady won him in Vegas? McCarthy gets knocked out early. Dallas. Oh, ooh. Say more. Could he go to Dallas?

Dallas? Well, Dax's good enough to win a lot of games. I mean, Bill over there would look, they'd be fundamentally sound. Well, they've got pieces already. They have to get a running back. O-Line's good. They would need a running, yeah. I mean, the O-Lines, top ten.

How many penalties did they have in the playoffs last year? Remember those? Well, how many penalties do they have since they had McCarthy? Yeah, he gets penalties. He gets a lot of penalties. They just led that in the last couple years. And just that whole clock management last week, it just seemed like it was a little big for both those coaches.

Or was it two weeks ago? Detroit Dallas. Like, what are we doing here? It just, the moment looked a little too big for both. Thank you. It did. That's exactly what we led with that day. It looked too big.

It's one thing to, there's a fine line for Dan Campbell, and I'm a huge Dan Campbell fan. I love everything he's done with that organization, but there's a fine line between reckless and aggressive. And he crossed it. And he can't have a two-poil. No one in any offense. of menu has a two-point play from the six or five. No one has a... That is the hard.

That's so hard. There's not much space. 70% of your playbook you can't use. No, you usually have two to four, two-point plays. None of them were they work at the six or five, or wherever they were, five yards back. That's tough. That's asking a lot. And plus, the defense was holding Dallas all day.

I mean, they had 20 points. I mean, what are we doing? Thank you. I don't know. Julian Edelman, Fox Sports, you're so money. It's great to have you here. We love having you, man. We really do.

So, you know, it's a little bit different having them, no, the shoe on the other foot. But on this guy, he comes in and not only looking like Safansky, but having that same kind of a meaner where it's like, you know,

nothing changes, you know, his attitude towards the game. He's still going to attack it the same way. Would I just score the touchdown or, you know, I just toss one until the team? God forbid that happens, but it does. And, you know, he just, he's just so relaxed and collected and he makes the offense feel that way every time he comes into the huddle. Look how easy when Flacco throws the ball in that video. for our radio audience, I apologize.

He throws a 50, 55-yard air. The ball's in the air. It is so, he is so strong. Now watch this. So we let's go of it at the 31. It lands at the 16. 13. And it's like, dude, he doesn't even crank it.

I mean, he's made every throw in the book. He's been around forever. Everything is, he's so, he's such an effortless thrower. He's throwing the ball 60 air yards. This is like. Probably too hot of a take. Who would you rather face in the wild card round if you're the higher seat? Would you rather have Cleveland coming to town or Miami coming to town?

Miami. No question. I have no interest facing flaco and house money. And they can play physical or up-tempo. I mean, they can do everything. Yeah. My computer's kind of crashing here on me. But the next story is a fun one, Colin. And as soon as it appears on the screen, I'll prepare it.

Trevor Lawrence is not looking good this week. He gave an interview saying he's getting better. every day, but it doesn't sound like he's a lock to start. And look at that line, Colin. It has come all the way down to three and a half. It was five and a half. Well, I don't, did you have this in the place in five or no? No, I mean, he's, I've heard this for four straight weeks. He always plays. Well, he always, he didn't play last week. And with CJ Beatherd, it did not go great. They did win 26-0, but, like, Betherd's not inspiring confidence. I don't know. What do you think? Lawrence forces it here? Like, listen,

if they lose, I don't think they're going to play. I've heard this for six straight weeks, and he's played five of them. So I just, he's going to play. I mean, doesn't he always? Yeah. I mean, last week it got to a point, but I mean, it's like, this has been a story on our show for over a month. And he's missed one. Been a bit of a story.

All right, I did bet the Titans at five and a half, but it doesn't matter because the line's gone. Final story. Now, college football, the transfer portal is popping off here in the last like two hours. A lot of stuff happening. Now, yesterday the big one was Will Howard verbally committed to Ohio State. Did not we predict that Ohio State would be fine. They would get a great quarterback. Take a deep breath.

state will win 11 games next year. Okay, you're saying great. This guy is... He's very good player. It's not like Notre Dame getting Hartman. Oh, no, I think he's very good. Or Pennicks's going to Washington. It's not on that level. He's pretty good.

He's a big 6-5 quarterback. But Notre Dame doesn't have Ohio State's receivers. He's going to be very good. They'll win the Big 10, I would guess, with him. That just happened within the last hour is Maryland's quarterback, Tua's younger brother. He's pretty interesting player. So it's weird.

He's trying to get an extra year from the NCAA, we don't know if they'll give it to him, but he's in the portal. Now, why would he enter the portal this late? Oh, wait a minute. Alabama's quarterback are terrible. Alabama. He actually started his career at Alabama. I'm not saying he's definitely going there.

But he's a good player. I've watched Maryland twice this year. He's like 23 years old. Yeah, he's a good player. That's an interesting one worth watching. I know you're a big transfer portal guy. The other one is the Ole Miss running back. I'm not going to pretend to butcher his name here.

But like, there's a lot of tampering. You and I both like that. portal a lot. I like it. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Like, it's good for college football. But there's a lot of coaches out there sweating now. Oh, season's over. Looking good. We're going to be top 10 next year. Alabama's losing 15 guys in the portal a year, aren't they? They're fine. Well, the guys not totally playing. Right. Right. They're like kind of end of the best. Everybody that enters a portal has an issue. I mean, almost everybody's got something. And remember, when Michigan beats Washington on Monday, sorry, Washington fans, and the Michigan guys all

announced they're going to the pros. There's going to be a lot of open spots on Michigan. So this portal is going to be good for the rest of the, this month. College football. I know people don't love it. This is fun. If you pay attention and consume something you love it. Love and hate are the same. They're an emotion. So if you're into the portal, you love it.

It may make you uncomfortable if you lose a player, but you love what you consume. You eat what you love. But we like the NBA. We're going to watch it. There's a lot of people. I want Harbaugh to win because I think this cheating narrative is overstated. It's 1%. But, you know, Washington's with kids. That's where I grew up rooting for the Huskies. So whoever wins, I'm okay with it. But I do feel like Michigan, Harbaugh, It's just like the football gods are like win and go pro. It feels like it's going to happen.

So a week ago, they had to look ahead lines for this game, and it was Michigan minus seven. So now it's Michigan minus four. So the side is Michigan. I think so. Why would it adjust by a field goal just based on one week of data? That's an overreaction, clearly. I think the public saw Washington beat the Texas team as a dog. Michigan looked bad.

They were almost dead, and they need to win an overtime. So I think everybody's going to bet Washington and pull cash on Michigan. Yeah. I think it's 30-24-ish kind of thing-ish. I go 31-17. Oh, God, Washington's going to score in the 20s. Well, they'll need the ball for that. I see. You're looking at ball control.
