Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year.
Starting point is 00:00:52 Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, this is Robert from the Stuff to Blow Your Mind podcast. Joe and I are both lifelong Star Wars fan, so we're celebrating May the 4th with a brand new week of fun, thought-provoking Star Wars-related episodes. Join us as we tackle science and culture topics from a galaxy far, far away, such as the biology of tauntons and wampas on the ice planet hot, or the practicality and corporate business sense of the Sith rule. of two. Listen to Stuff to Blow Your Mind on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:01:35 On the Look Back at it podcast. From 1979, that was a big moment for me. 84 was big to me. I'm Sam Jay. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a year, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it with our friends, fellow comedians, and favorite authors. Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s.
Starting point is 00:01:52 84 was a wild year. It was a wild year. I don't think there's a more important year for black. people. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Thanks for listening to The Heard podcast. Be sure to catch us live every weekday from 12 to 3 Eastern, 9 to noon Pacific on Fox Sports
Starting point is 00:02:12 Radio and FS1. Find your local station for the herd at Fox Sports Radio.com or stream us live every day on the iHeartRadio app by searching Heard. You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Well, Rory McElroy had his way yesterday. They took a little shot at Greg Norman, as Greg Norman has induced some of the best golfers in America, Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson to come over and play in the Saudi Arabia-backed live tournament. I told you my opinion last week, which is we send our athletes to China and the NBA, Qatar and the World Cup, where they've had 30 people die constructing the stadiums, to the Vladimir Putin purchased Sochi Olympics. But this is not sitting well with a lot of people in America.
Starting point is 00:02:58 and is it Pearl clutching or should they be criticized? So we bring it an expert on golf, an 11-time national sports writer of the year, my friend Rick Riley. He's got a new book, so help me golf, why we love the game. I believe it's his fourth book on golf. So he is carved out a part of his life now that I'm very jealous of. Italy, part of the year, and golfing, and he is joining us live. So first of all, let's just start with this.
Starting point is 00:03:21 Before we get into the debate part, Rick, are you surprised how quickly many top players or a handful pivoted to LIV. Does that surprise you? I'm amazed. I'm amazed in the space of one tournament. They've now got nine major winners, five master's winners. They've got two of our, well, three of our biggest superstars in Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, and D. Shambot.
Starting point is 00:03:50 I mean, these are great players that will now no longer be coming to the local PGA tour event in your town. They won't be in the President's Cup. There's some doubt that they'll ever be able to play in a Ryder Cup again, as long as this goes on. So it's amazing how well this is working. Personally, I think it's disgusting. I would never, you could give me a billion dollars, and I'm not going to work for the Saudis who provided 15 of the 19-9-11 terrorists, who had jail dissenters, who kill gay people, and on a personal note, murder journalists. you can say, well, yeah, we go to China sometimes, and yeah, sometimes Nicholas builds a course in Saudi Arabia. That's bad, and I've been against that from the start.
Starting point is 00:04:36 But this is over the top. I can understand geopolitics where we need Saudi Arabian oil. This is golf. There's nobody needs to take Saudi money, and they're giving it away like it's monopoly money. I mean, Phil got 200. I'm here in Dustin actually got 180 million. and they're giving Patrick Reed, table for one. The guy nobody likes.
Starting point is 00:05:00 Probably got, am I hearing, $50 million. So it's just madness, and it really sucks for golf. Well, let's talk about this. They're independent contractors. So could I make this argument? For years and years, guys were making more money on, Arnie made more money at Pens Oil. Jack made more money in course design.
Starting point is 00:05:18 The way their taxes were set up, they were, you know, they'd give 15% to charity, and they'd hog a lot of the money. money and they should have seen this avalanche coming a decade ago where they weren't paying enough. And in the globalization of the world, Rick, this was bound. It's like the transfer portal or the NIL that golf is somewhat to blame for this. You're totally right. You're totally right.
Starting point is 00:05:40 They should have seen this coming. And they worried too much about the 125th guy in the rankings and not the first. And here was their worst nightmare. A huge money whipping country that could just lay giant scableness. some money on them. And suddenly they're like, well, gosh, I'll lose all my endorsements. And I might not be able to play in any majors. But they're going to give me $150 million. And they're going to give my caddy a hotel room and insurance. And even if I go and play, you know, shoot radio stations, 103 and 107, the worst I'm going to make is 100 grand.
Starting point is 00:06:16 So they should, you're right. They're totally right. They should have seen this coming. Having said that, it's still disgusting. It's still blood money. when Phil gets his new jet with the white seats, I hope those bloody checks don't stain the interior. Tigers got a billion net worth I just read last week, so I don't see him going over. But I didn't see, you know, Phil Mickelson's different. I mean, I just read Alan's book, Alan Shipnock, on Phil. And, you know, between the gambling and the lifestyle, Phil's running through money like, you know, I'm running through masks for COVID. So that's different.
Starting point is 00:06:52 But Phil, I can see. but were you shocked by Dustin Johnson? I don't see. No, no. Dustin, I could see because as I once wrote, he's so dense light bends around him.
Starting point is 00:07:07 I don't think he even knows where Saudi Arabia is. Phil knows. Phil has said many times, the Saudis are mother efforts. They murder journalists. They jail gay people. He knows who he's working for. He knows who's signing his check.
Starting point is 00:07:22 And he did it anyway. Dustin doesn't think. He just puts ball in hole. And so I was so disappointed in Phil, who I loved until this. I mean, it's the most generous tipper, great guy, joyful. I know so good with fans. I know people think he's a phony. But, I mean, he's a great guy to be around far more than Tiger ever was.
Starting point is 00:07:44 And yet now it's flipped. Tiger is standing up for American golf, standing up for human rights. And Phil's over there blanking out his master's. logo and playing as a man without a country. What does the PGA do? So, you know, rigidity is never the answer. Okay, that's not going to solve anything saying we're the PGA and you, that's not going to work.
Starting point is 00:08:06 It's not the way the world works. It didn't, you know, at some point the NFL caved to some players, let them celebrate in the end zone, let them have more fun. You have to empower the athletes. So the PGA's got to, they got a pivot here, Rick. They've got to do something. Do you have an idea? Well, keep in mind, the PGA tour.
Starting point is 00:08:23 is who's in trouble here. The PGA of America runs the PGA championship in the Ryder Cup. And I see how the tea leaves are spreading out. The PGA tour is screwed. Because all these other companies that run the majors, the tour doesn't run a single major. All they run is the players and the President's Cup and a lot of John Deere Buick classics.
Starting point is 00:08:43 So they're in trouble. So they've got to start having much smaller tournaments, much bigger purses, no cut, take care of the cat, and maybe charities have to foot the bill and stop getting so much, so much money, which is kind of sad. But the PGA tour can say all they want. Like yesterday, Monaghan goes on and says, you know, remember, when you play the PGA tour, you don't have to apologize for playing it. Well, I think they're in trouble and I think it's them that's going to have to buckle. I don't see Tiger or Rory, who, for the record, when people kept saying, because I always felt
Starting point is 00:09:22 like tiger was a comet. He was a once in a lifetime. Like you just don't get another tiger. But there was part of me that kind of got lured into Rory. He had the alpha, the chest, the workout, the beautiful girlfriends. There was something about him. I was like, okay, that's the next tiger close. He hasn't materialized as that.
Starting point is 00:09:42 That said, he's unbelievable. Could you, is there another, I said last week, if Brooks kept going over there, boy, you'd start getting my eyeballs a little bit. Phil and Kepka, is there another star out there that your concern would take the live money? Bubba. Bubba's sort of hitting sort of the last third of his career. If Moracobo went, if Jordan Speeth went, if Justin Thomas went, I mean, that would be so sad. Because what we're looking at, Colin, is never seeing best versus best again.
Starting point is 00:10:14 Can you imagine that in the NBA? Never seeing the Warriors play the Celtics, never seeing Steph play LeBron? And that's what we're looking at. And it's really, really bad. And it makes me sad. There's no, there's no legacy there. There's no tradition. There's no history. These guys are giving up a lot. And I don't think they realize what they're giving up. As they said in green, how many yachts can you ski behind? You know, I mean, Dustin Johnson said, I'm doing it for the right thing for my family. You're already richer than a Kardashian. How many yachts do you want your kids to have? I mean, have a little morality here. Yeah. I mean, you know,
Starting point is 00:10:52 I said this last week. I said my car's got Saudi oil on it, and I have an iPhone from China. So I don't want to be Mr. You know, Mr. Greater than everyone. That's because America has put you in the position where we don't make enough oil. We don't make enough energy. So when Biden goes over there, whenever he goes over there and is nice to the sheiks, that's because he has to.
Starting point is 00:11:15 But nobody has to go over there and play golf. I know. I know. I'm one guy in a lifeboat saying this is wrong. I'm going to lose this. And I think it's sad, but that's how I feel. Yeah, okay. Yeah, this is, it's all so fascinating.
Starting point is 00:11:30 So how about this? Greg Norman's always, and I love Norman, but he's always kind of been about the money. Does it, what do you make of Norman? Because he's kind of front and center on this. Well, Norman has always not felt comfortable or happy with how he was represented. He doesn't, he always, you know, he got burned everybody, either tipped in or knocked it in from the fairway, Larry Mize, Bob Tway from the bunker at the PGA. He's always felt just screwed.
Starting point is 00:11:59 So 25 years ago, he tried to start this all-world tour, and he kept getting laughed at. And now he finally found somebody with stupid money. And so he's finally getting the last laugh. But it's very hard to make Greg Norman happy. I covered him in his pride. He was the Tiger Woods of his time. He just couldn't pull the trigger like Tiger can. And no one since Nicholas has been able to pull the trigger on Sunday like Tiger Can.
Starting point is 00:12:25 And so Shark is really finally getting some satisfaction. But, you know, I know Shark, and he'll screw this up. He'll screw this up somehow. I mean, he's already said, hey, yeah, they killed a journalist, but everybody makes mistakes. So you're kind of like, Shark, stay away from the microphones. By the way, if you walked by Phil Mickelson today, I just finished the book. I love it. And by the way, Rick's got a new book.
Starting point is 00:12:50 So Help Me Golf, Why We Love the Game. It was released in early May. It is now June. Buy it. There's a beautiful picture of it. Nobody writes about golf like Rick. So if you, it's just, Phil is such a, Phil is such as just a big personality. What would you say if you're, what would you say if you ran into him tonight at dinner in Iowa where you're at?
Starting point is 00:13:12 Cole, I said, Phil, once again, you overthought this. You're the dumbest smart guy ever met. He used to tell us, he used to tell us, don't wear sunblank. It's worse for your skin than the sun. I'm like, no, and never say that publicly. I mean, one time he was at the Masters and he goes, I'm going to win this. I said, how come? Well, we looked at all the yardage books, and we found out I don't hit five iron.
Starting point is 00:13:32 And then, of course, he shot 77 the first day. And I found bones, and I said, I bet you needed that five iron today. He said, practically every hole. So as usual, Phil thinks he's somehow saving the PGA tour by going with their competition, kind of like a guy sleeps with his secretary to improve his marriage. It's not doable. Whatever your dumb idea is, Phil, it's not working. So I'd say, please come back.
Starting point is 00:13:57 Please come back. The PGA tour would take you back. They've banned you for, they haven't said how long they've just banned you. They can take that back. Please come back to American Golf. By the way, buddy, that's three times you've mentioned Shipnuck's Phil book. When are you going to read my book? My book's fun.
Starting point is 00:14:15 It has no murderers in it. It has no gambling. It's actually just fun golf stories that I've saved for 40 years for this book. I've been writing it for 40 years, and it's really been fun to talk about. So someday over a beer down in Hermosa, I can tell you some of these stories like the time. The four guys made holes in one because the kid was secretly sneaking out and putting the balls in the hole on a blind part three in Ireland. It's a lot of fun stories, Ed. I think I've told you my dad was a drunk golfer and I hated golf till I was 12 years old because he came home and
Starting point is 00:14:51 and he was, you know, violent. And so, so to get golf back and find out golf wasn't my problem in my home. It was my dad's problem. To get that back, I think is why I've attached so closely to it. And really, it's woven itself through the fabric of my life. And that's what the book's about. By the way, the book is called So Help Me Golf. Why we love the game. I told Rick, Oh, now you're nice. No, listen, I had to bring that up because I, he was on my show.
Starting point is 00:15:22 And we all know, you guys are, you know, you guys are studs. So, but I told Rick a couple years ago, I saw him at a coffee shop in L.N. I said, hey, I'm playing tennis. And Rick said, every court's the same. It's so boring. And every court's the same, whether you're in Indonesia, Florida, or South America, in golf, every shot's different, much less every hole, every course. And by the way, can you have the world's best food at the turn?
Starting point is 00:15:50 Like the Burger Dog at Olympic or the lobster chowder at the National? Come on, Colin. Get with the game that, yeah, it takes four and a half hours, but who wants to go home? That's funny. Tennis, you're done an hour and a half and you're back doing chores. Yeah, and I gave up tennis, as Joey knows, because you're basically planning. your foot for two hours in cement and my knee gave way. Oh, really?
Starting point is 00:16:18 Yeah. It's just, it's a great sport, but I'm going to go back to golf. All right. Put it up there again. So help me golf. Why we love the game. Have your publisher send me one and I'll put it all over Twitter and the kind of stuff like that.
Starting point is 00:16:33 And don't be afraid to call. You know, where you live, I got a nice restaurant. I can take you out for lunch and your beautiful wife if you ever got a hold of me. Dude, I go there all the time. I even go for the comedy nights. Oh, look at that. You're really committed to the brew hall. Oh, yeah, you're right. You're three blocks from my house. Great talking to you, Rick.
Starting point is 00:16:51 Absolute pleasure. You look fantastic. So help me golf why we love the game. And we will talk soon. You're Rapids, Iowa. Eat your heart out, buddy. Yeah, oh, I am. Green with envy. So there you go. I'm going to read the book. It's going to be a great book. Who is going to golf another round of golf first? Me or Colin? No, I will.
Starting point is 00:17:12 Do you have one planned? No, but I will. I will. I have golf more recently than you have. You have, but does it count if you go hit balls? Because that I love. No. That doesn't count?
Starting point is 00:17:23 No, it doesn't count going to the driving range. Oh, I love that. When I go to Top Golf, that doesn't count as golfing. You're just hitting the ball. Doesn't Top Golf count as golfing? It doesn't? If you golf at Top Golf, if you're hitting at a driving range, you just went to the driving range, you did not go golf. I can't be the only guy, especially guys with kids.
Starting point is 00:17:45 I can't give four and a half hours up. I can't on Saturday. But I can say, honey, I'll be back in hour 10. I'm going to go hit my hours. Yeah, I do think my suggestion to golf would be to cut it in half. I like the nine hole. It's like baseball. Stop at six and a half innings.
Starting point is 00:18:00 I mean, it's great. It's perfect. Y'all doesn't leave them wanting a little more. Leave a little mystery to it. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific. an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's
Starting point is 00:18:18 unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the
Starting point is 00:18:35 IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care what you're saying. Yep, that's me, Clifford Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits,
Starting point is 00:18:48 the reactions, my journey from basketball to college football, or my career in sports media. Well, somewhere along the way, this platform became bigger than I ever imagined. And now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifford Show. This is a place for raw,
Starting point is 00:19:03 unfiltered conversations with some of your favorite athletes, creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard, but celebrated. One week, I'll take you behind the same, scenes of the biggest moments in sports and entertainment, and the next we'll talk about life, mental health, purpose, and even music. The Clifford Show isn't just a podcast, it's a space for honest conversations, stories that don't always get told, and for people who are chasing something bigger. So, if you've ever supported me, or you're just chasing down a dream,
Starting point is 00:19:30 this is right where you need to be. Listen to the Clifford show on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more behind the scenes, follow at Clifford and at TikTok Podcast Network on TikTok. Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tapped Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs? Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at It podcast.
Starting point is 00:19:56 I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so you all know. I mean, at this point, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line.
Starting point is 00:20:21 We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you for finishing that sentence. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:20:42 Welcome to my new podcast, Learn the Hardway with me, your host, and your favorite therapist, Keer Games. And in recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience in the mental health field and conversations with so many incredible guests. I'm talking, Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. and we're still chasing it
Starting point is 00:21:09 and we don't know when we've done enough because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth? Are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro.
Starting point is 00:21:24 Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Kear Gaines, as we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast. Learn the hard way.
Starting point is 00:21:38 Open your free iHeartRadio app. Search Learn the hard way and listen now. Do I take a break or not? No. No, I don't. Joy Taylor with the news. No, no, no, no. Turn on the news.
Starting point is 00:21:50 This is the herd line news. Yeah, that is the only thing. I also do not have four and a half hours. I know. It's a time. Years ago, I said this about soccer. I said the best part about soccer. It starts at four.
Starting point is 00:22:04 It's done at 555. You got 45 minutes. intermission, 45 minutes, you're out, unless you go to a shootout. Baseball, at the end of an NBA game, and I love basketball, the last minute and a half can take 40 minutes in the NBA. I don't have, my wife's like, hello, you promised dinner. It's just sometimes sports. I'm telling you, you got to get the move where you can watch the game on your phone.
Starting point is 00:22:27 Then you're mobile. If I went to dinner with my wife and I'm watching a game with the phone, Daddy's going to go home, sad. Well. Say it right now. Not going to be a good night for Daddy. I mean, I don't know. I'm not going to argue with you. Lamar Jackson did not participate in Ravens, the Ravens voluntary OTAs this offseason.
Starting point is 00:22:45 There's been a lot percolating, a lot of speculation about what's going to happen with the Ravens and Lamar Jackson's contract. John Harba said last week that Lamar had been working out on his own and he expected him to be at mandatory activities when they began. And he was right. Ravens Mandatory minicamp started today. And Lamar did report.
Starting point is 00:23:03 He is there at the mandatory mini camp. Good for Lamar. I did not expect this to go any other way than John Harbaugh said. I don't think that Lamar is going to hold out. He's not even having conversations about his contract. Well, he's also, if his DNA, he's really into it. Like, he's so into working out. He's been in trouble on jet skis, on basketball courts.
Starting point is 00:23:23 He loves football. He likes just being a great athlete. He's making $23 million on a fifth year option. Good life. And he's eligible for a new deal and he's negotiating without an agent. I would like to see Lamar get the deal done before the season starts, but this is kind of the issue of doing things without an agent, is that you have to do the deal yourself.
Starting point is 00:23:44 Now you also have to pay an agent, so you're paying them to do your deal, but they are handling things while you're focusing on football. I am a very pro-agent. We both have agents throughout our career. Sometimes there's points in your career where you don't need an agent for specific deals, but this is one, your first big deal. Yeah, you should probably get it.
Starting point is 00:24:02 You should probably get an agent. But we'll see. You know, guys have negotiated contracts without agents before. It's just a matter of, you know, what are the Ravens willing to pay? I know everyone thinks that the market has reset because of Deshawn Watson. The more that that plays out, the more I think teams are going to point to that, like, just so you know, don't walk in here with that. Because the way that that's planned out for the Browns, the way that I think it's going to go, they're going to be like, there's no way we're doing anything like that. I think it's going to go in the opposite direction.
Starting point is 00:24:30 So Steph Curry has been amazing for the Warriors and the final. this year. He stepped up with 43 points and 10 rebounds in game four with the wins, even the series. Really an all-time performance by Seth Curry. I thought game four, there are moments, and it happens occasionally where a game is so great and a performance so great, I can't go to bed. I'm just sitting there thinking, what did I just watch? Yeah, you just watched history is what you just I was watching one of the great performances. Maybe it wasn't magic playing center for the Lakers against the Sixers as a rookie. Maybe it wasn't an MJ. push Brian Russell moment.
Starting point is 00:25:05 But it's a top five, six moment. In my mind, one of the great performances on the road against the statistically brilliant defense. And he was spectacular. If they go on to win this series, that will be... Oh, that's the moment. Well, Steve Kerr praised Steph Curry for the work that he puts in to be one of the best in the game.
Starting point is 00:25:25 His routine, it's like a metronome. I mean, every day, it's the exact same thing. He's in the training room. He's in the weight room. He's on the... court and there's you know you can it's clockwork he loves the process and I think that's one of things that ties all great athletes together like you know the talking about the superstar athletes the you know Roger Federer of the world he's absolutely right I think that that's something
Starting point is 00:25:56 that ties all greats at everything together is that they adore the routine of improvement. Make things simple. Do the same thing every day. You are what you habitually do. So if you want to be great, you have to invest in yourself in the same ways that help you improve every single day. You can't eat good for one day and decide you're going to wake up in shape the next day. That's not how it works, although we would all love to believe that. I certainly would. Beating a lot of pizza during these playoffs. Yeah, it's the routine of things. And that's what I love hearing from people that are at the top of whatever it is, whatever industry. I mean, Steve Jobs is obviously someone that we always talk about with that parked in the same parking spot.
Starting point is 00:26:37 It's the same thing. We're the same outfit every day. Focus on all of the routine things that don't matter. Like, eliminate the amount of decisions you have to make a day so you can focus on being great. And that's what routines do. You don't have to wonder, what's the next step in my workout program? Well, I did it yesterday. I know what it is.
Starting point is 00:26:53 And when you see results from it, you can continue with that. But Steph to me is just, I think the last couple years, his performance and the playing games, and that team with everyone being injured. And now this finals, especially if they go on to win, he'll win finals MVP, has really put him in that category where, all right, we can stop being disrespectful about the legacy of Steph Curry. Like, not only did he transform the game in the way that he plays and the way that he shoots and being the greatest shooter of all time, but he is, he should be mentioned with the greatest to ever play the game.
Starting point is 00:27:25 Yeah. And I think he's, I think he's really separated. He's been unbelievable in this postseason. So the cults, the cults are an interesting. team to me this year. There's a couple teams that are kind of floating out there that may just slip through under the radar. Matt Ryan is going to be under center. He's gotten positive reviews all offseason. And after mandatory minicamp last week, Frank Reich continued to spread some compliments to his veteran quarterback. Matt was unbelievable, did a great job, you know,
Starting point is 00:27:58 great command. Really, you know, A to Z. I mean, he did everything right. just great leadership, great play. I mean, just the whole way it took command, you know, great collaborating as an offensive staff with him to kind of work in and nuance some of the things that we do to kind of suit him and his style. I'll tell you, it's one of the reasons I like to see players, nothing against the Falcons, but I just want to see Matt with a better offensive line. It's a very good front office.
Starting point is 00:28:31 This is no shot at the Falcons. but sometimes you wonder, let's give Matt a little new environment and see how it goes. And it's like, I can't wait to watch Maddie Ice this year. And look, the Falcons had their moment, obviously. They went to the Super Bowl with him. He had an MVP season. They certainly had things together, just very quickly fell apart.
Starting point is 00:28:50 I really want to see how things go with the Colts this year. I think, you know, Frank Reich is a good coach, but there's been some questions about him lately. Maddie Ice is going to come in with a little chip on his shoulder. A big chip. They have some. real, you know, solid pieces. You'd probably want them to be a little bit more star level in some of the,
Starting point is 00:29:09 you know, big, big places. You want to, you know, more of a number one receiver, you know, things like that. But I just, especially when you look at that division. Oh, it's all wonky and goofy. Like the Titans. I don't. How many times are we going to. Well, they just lost their best receiver.
Starting point is 00:29:24 So they're going to become more Ryan Tannahill. Reliant. Yeah. I just like, I think Colts are going to win the division. Jacksonville. I'm going to, I still need to give another year. Oh, yeah. lot to clean up there.
Starting point is 00:29:34 They don't know what's going on with the Texans. I think the Colts could surprise some people this year. No, I think Minnesota is going to be the most improved team in the league by a lot. And I think there's an argument to me made in the AFC, the Colts will be the shocking. If you looked up and said the Colts didn't make the mistakes and you looked up and you said, oh, the Colts are 13 and 4, I would not be the least bit shock. Because they do so many things well, but that quarterback thing, the last, even with Andrew Luck at the end, it was like a lot of mistakes.
Starting point is 00:30:05 They're not dynamic enough offensively to overcome mistakes. I think they're going to start looking a little bit like the Saints, where they may not give you this stuff down the field like the rivals, but they're going to be really smart, really well run, really efficient, excellent defense. I worry about the health of Darius Landers too. I like that comp, The Saints. I don't know about the Vikings, though.
Starting point is 00:30:24 I don't know if I can go there with you. Oh, I've spent a lot of money on them. I might as well get a little ice house up there, fishing village and International Falls. Love the Vikings. this year. Are you done? Enjoy it with the news. Well, that's the news.

Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it.
Starting point is 00:33:19 Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'allon. But just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, this is the second episode where we've discussed,
Starting point is 00:33:34 correct. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you for finishing that sentence. I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Starting point is 00:33:46 Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts,

Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing and we're still chasing it and we don't know when we've done enough.
Starting point is 00:34:26 Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on Earth? Are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person.

Starting point is 00:35:09 Robert Williams, the great center, defensive center for the Celtics, questionable tonight. I don't think they can win without him on the floor. I think they're hard to beat with him on the floor. So in game four, he kind of aggravated his knee. He's questionable tonight. Like, that's a real thing in this series.
Starting point is 00:35:25 He eliminates. He's so athletic, so long. He just kind of, I said he's a dead end sign in a cul-de-sac. There's no reason to go down there. He's had some rebounds in this series where he just like, just reaches over everyone, just like a kid, like just reaches over, just takes it off of other players. He's incredible. All right.
Starting point is 00:35:47 So here are my MVP material. Here are my top five MVPs if I had a vote. I would start. Number one. With Steph Curry, that's obvious. leading score in every game, best player in the series. In fact, he's averaging 12 points per game more than any other player in the series. He's the first player since MJ to go to a finals and in the first four games lead every
Starting point is 00:36:11 game in scoring. So Steph's a pretty obvious number one. Number two. I'd go Jalen Brown. I mean, listen, he is the leading score for the Celtics, average in about 22. He's also a very good defensive player. In the finals, he leads all players. all of them in points in the paint, which pretty impressive for a guard.
Starting point is 00:36:33 Taking more shots, made more shots than any other player this postseason in the fourth quarter. That's kind of been the revelation. He's always been a good player. He's been a tremendous fourth quarter player on both ends, more points than any other player in the postseason, including Steph in the fourth. Number three. Robert Williams, to me, is the most underrated player, maybe in the playoffs. Best defensive rating, including.
Starting point is 00:36:55 Marcus Smart, best defensive rating of any Celtic in the playoffs. So all through the playoffs, highest rated defensive player. The Celtics are plus 20 when he's on the court and minus 21 when he's not. Best rim protector in the finals. He's got 12 blocks. He's the kind of player that if you do get past Marcus Smart or Brown, it doesn't matter. If he's on the floor, you're not scoring at the rim. So he really forces your hand, forces you to play Kvon Looney more than you'd probably want to. Anytime a player can force you to do things as a team, a good team that you don't want to do, that's what Robert Williams does.
Starting point is 00:37:37 Number four. I think Andrew Wiggins has been not a revelation, but a really pleasant surprise. So number one picked, plenty of talent. He's become their number two scoring option. He's also defending Jason Tatum, who's having a lousy series. He's always been springy and twitchy, but he's never kind of been that dog you could rely on. He and Jason Tatum feel a little bit the same. I don't know if I call him a one, but boy, they're really talented.
Starting point is 00:38:01 And best plus minus by any starter in the game four win, he had, I think, 16 rebounds. He was hugely important in Boston. Number five. Marcus Smart. When he scores over 18, Celtics are 8 and 1. He tends to shoot more than I'd be comfortable with, but he's so, he kind of feels like to me the heart and soul of the team. He can score, but not a great score.
Starting point is 00:38:27 He can defend, and he's a great defender. So he's, the other thing I like is he's increased his scoring average in the playoffs, very Jimmy Butler. In that, we don't think a Butler, you know, 21 a game is a natural score, but Jimmy's got 40 points regularly in the playoffs. Marcus Smart, first couple years in the league, I didn't even want him shooting the basketball. But he's developed a nice jump shot, and he's asked to defend multiple players. And also, Golden State's very difficult to defend because of the fluidity of their offense and the way they move. So I would go, Steph 1, Jalen 2, Robert Williams 3, Wiggins 4, and Marcus Smart 5. And game 5 is tonight.
Starting point is 00:39:09 I think it starts at 6, our time, 9, Eastern. It's kind of crazy that Tatum is not up there. Isn't it? But I wouldn't disagree with this list, though. It's not like he'd be 6. I'd be 7. to this point I'm talking about not best players
Starting point is 00:39:27 I'm talking most valuable Jalen's been better in the fourth Robert Williams literally manipulates the warrior's offense your Robert Williams' sake has very much been proven to be correct he is just vital
Starting point is 00:39:41 yeah and they don't want to play Kavon Looney but they were forced to and by the way Looney is also one of these guys that's somewhere in the top 10 you know what this list shows me It's not all offense, folks. It's not all hitting jump shots.
Starting point is 00:39:55 You look at these guys in the playoffs who have been valuable. It is amazing how often it's a defensive stopper. It's the tough guy. The guy that'll do stuff nobody else wants to do. All right, good stuff. Joy, Ryan and I, we are back tomorrow. Fun show today. Rick Riley was fantastic.
Starting point is 00:40:12 Tom is 02. Good to talk to Tom. We'll see you tomorrow. In L.A., it's The Hurt. Another podcast from some SNL late-night comedy guy, Not quite.
