Derek Harper knows this game inside and out. I want to start with New York. There is something magical. It's almost like the lighting's different, the celebrities. When I watch the Knicks play, it just jumps off television. And when you have this team that's almost collegiate. it, Villanova guys. It's just incredible

television. Take me back to playing. I remember those days, you as a Nick. And even though you had four times the career in Dallas, do you have fond memories of the intensity of New York, the celebrities, and all that is the mecca in New York?

There's no question. It's very difficult not to enjoy New York, Colin, you know that. For crying out loud, you're out in Los Angeles, and it's sort of the the same feel, if you would, when you compare the two cities, other than the weather, I might add. But I was in New York undercover when I lived in New York,

just had a lot of off-the-court opportunities. And you couple that, Colin, with a winning basketball team this time of the year. And it's actually surreal when I think back on it. I mean, I shared a locker with Messier, year that the Rangers won in 94 and it was absolutely amazing to be playing and I'm like you I'm sitting up watching the Knicks in Indiana and it takes me back because of the atmosphere I mean Jaylon Brunson has he's set the city on fire this year yeah so everybody liked Brunson

his coach in college Jay Wright said yesterday he goes I didn't see this coming how surprised are you or are you surprised by Brunson putting up Michael Jordan and Jerry West numbers in the playoffs? You know, I'm a tad surprised that he's gotten to this level, but the only way to get to this level, if you would, is to work your craft, is to live in the gym, is to spend so much time working on your game that you don't have time for anything else. And that's who Jalen Brunson is. I talked to the guys when they signed Jalen, and I told them that they said.

they were getting an all-star caliber player. And of course, you can hear chuckles. You could hear the indecisiveness from people. But, you know, I just know the kid. I've been, I was around him for three and a half years. I know Rick as well. And between the two of them, man, they work smart and they work, I mean, resiliently. I mean, constantly.

And the other thing that I'll say about Jalen is that he will never, in his career, allow, a miss shot or a turnover or something that goes wrong to deter him from being who he is. He's very humble. He's spit fast on being great. And as a result, he's getting results to help the next, maybe move through the second round. So I like Luca, but I have said what concerned me when he broke into the league, I said, I see some James Harden and Mellow. mellow in terms of, is he in great shape?

Is he willing to defend? I think he's more, I don't know if he's more talented. They're both great. And then Harden, I'm like, you can't have the ball in your hands as much. Well, I saw a stat this morning, Derek. The Mazar 8 and 0 when his usage rate, like last night, is under 30%. So I can love, I say this before. I love ice cream.

I don't want it for breakfast. I can love Luca. I don't want him to have the ball constantly. I won't eat the company. So how does that play in Dallas? Is that a discussion that not only guys like me are having, but in Dallas are people acknowledging, you know what, little less Luca is better Luca.

Well, it just points to basketball being the pity me of a team game. If you would, I mean, if one guy is going to dominate the whole show, then let them go out there by himself. I said that in L.A. Because there was always an argument when I was in L.A. my last year in the league as to whose team it was. I said, well, if it's Kobe's team and Shaq's team only, let them go play against five guys.

There's no need for the other guys, if you would. And I would concur with that, that when the Mavericks have more than Luca contributing offensively, defensively, whatever, when it's that way, they're not as effective as a team. And what happened is Luca had to do so much early in his career, And now that Kyrie has joined the fold and the trades that we made before the All-Star break, you add all of those guys the pieces that we have gotten.

And this team is tailor-made to make a run. I mean, they had some butterflies, I think, in the first game against the Clippers. But all in all, Dallas is built just like Minnesota and just like Denver and all of these teams that have a chance to be successful this time of the year. The Mavericks are right there. Nico Harris, to me, is exec of the year of being able to pull off the trade that he pulled off. And I just think Les Luca means other guys are going to not get an opportunity. And that gives you more opportunity to be successful without question.

Yes. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. drafted player because I get three or four years of watching the college football player. A lot of times, international guys, I've never seen them play. So I didn't watch Ant in college at Georgia, but I watched a ton of YouTube stuff. And then I watched him his first year. And I'm like, well, he's athletic. And there's something about in the last, the playoff run. it's it's more refined he's more efficient just takes a little better shots I feel like I am watching it's like oh this is the first chapter of the book like the moment yes what do you see with

aunt I tell you I'll tell you what I thought initially his first say year and a half as a player I saw a guy that could score the basketball at ease he's that athletic he's developed into a awesome shooter from the perimeter three-point line. But I said to my colleagues, the people that I work with that he has the potential to be really good. I didn't know how good once he stops trying to score so hard. He's slowed down. And once the game slows down for you, you're a much better player.

He's not trying to do too much. If you listen to Ant Man talk now, you know what he's talking about? His teammates and how much he trusts those guys. If they're open, I'm going to make the play tool. And that's when you know you've improved, not only as a player, but the mental capacity has come to fruition for you as a player. And I think that's where Ed is.

The game has slowed down for him. He doesn't try to beat you by himself, which is impossible to do anyway. But if you look at all the great players now, including LeBron, the one thing that separates all alone, Colin, is unselfish basketball plays. and when you get that from your star,

it changes the whole dynamic of your team. Yeah. Finally, Kevin Durant's running through coaches, LeBron's running through coaches. What's going on with that guy? It's incredible, right? It's amazing. Yeah, it's, I don't love it,

but I also understand it. So tell me, how do you feel about K.D. LeBron just running through coaches. I watched Darvinham this year. I thought he was fine. I thought he had an inconsistent roster with multiple players who were all over the map. I thought he did as well as you could have. I thought they out played Denver for most of the series.

What do you make of this carousel of coach firings that's now, maybe it's always been like this, but it seems like it's just been sped up. Yeah, it has, and I feel bad for him. I feel bad for Frank in Phoenix because In the past, you were all, you were given a team, however you put that team together,

and you had an opportunity to build something. You know, it's like a relationship, right? You get into a serious relationship, you have to be willing to build. And that's just not happening now because, you know why, Colin, I mean, if you guys have all the control, they make all the money,

and I'm not knocking by any means. I'm not discussing someone's pocket, how much money they make. But with all of what they get comes, you know, puts your position to call the shots. Byron Scott said it best. Let LeBron coach. Let him coach the Lakers. I mean, he's making the decisions.

You can Steve Wonder. Excuse me, Stevie, but he can see that. I mean, it's an incredible thing how, you know, all players ever wanted was left. and now they have all the leverage and I think taking advantage of it a little bit personal that's just my thoughts he's one of the broadcasters in Dallas one of the good guys nicks 16 years all defensive guy a class act I love seeing you once twice a year good for you and make it happen more often got and I'm willing and able all right good senior all right you too bad he told me during the break I said, you know, he's cutting back in his schedule.

I said, well, you don't have to go to Sacramento or Portland, you know, up in the northwest. And he said, Jake's seafood in Portland. You kidding me? He goes, every time I get off that plane, I go right to Jake's in Portland. And by the way, they deserve the free advertisement. It's where I go every time I'm in Portland. J. Mack with the news. No, no, no, no, turn on the news.

This is the herd line news. Start with the San Francisco 49ers. How about that first round draft? At 31, they picked up Florida receiver Ricky Purcell. According to an anonymous NFL executive, he believes the Niners viewed Pearsall as a player who can fill a similar role to Puka Nukua, adding they wanted a route runner like the Rams have in Puka. I like this pickup a lot.

Colin, this 49ers team is going to be loaded. I saw an interesting article that this is their last dance, that they're just going to keep Dibo. They're going to keep Ayyuk. They're going to go all in before they have to be. make tough decisions on the receivers and Brock Purdy. Well, you know, what's interesting is that, you know, I saw people say, you know, Ricky Pierceall didn't beat man-to-man coverage.

But remember, 95% of the league, 90 to 95% plays zone coverage. It's really about are you cognitively, can you walk into this league, beat zone coverage, find the creases, learn the playbook. And there are very few guys that literally just have the route tree down, even three or four years in. great route runners. There's several. But I think, and Pooka's really good, but, you know,

I think sometimes we get too caught up in 40 times, and my take is the league's running zone. Find the holes in the zone. Puka immediately was, you know, he and Stafford had a harmony immediately. So, I mean, I listen, they've missed on some receivers. They've got now between Jennings, Debo, IUC, Pierce, All, They got the kid from Arizona in the fourth round.

McCaffrey might as well be a receiver. Like, kiddle. Kiddle. So, yeah, I mean, and I also think what they're saying is, we got a couple of year run here on Brock Purdy before we pay them. Let's make it work. Let's give them as many weapons. I also think what they're saying is you can only do so much defensively in this league.

Let's load up on offensive skill people. I'm of the belief, and you look at their roster, Colin, I don't know that there's a better roster in the league of talent. I think it's the best. You could do that when your quarterback's on the cheap. The question is, remember, they lost to Funga in the secondary last year. That obviously hurt. That was significant.

They lost the linebacker in the Super Bowl to an Achilles running on to the field. I think second's Baltimore, third's Detroit. Rosters. I can't totally argue with that, but the New York Jets are certainly up there. I know you scoff. That's fine. There's some guy over at the other place that's got them. Neck and neck with the Niners best roster.

I mean, come on. He's analyzing all. He's breaking down the linebacker units. I think he lost power on the internet. I think he is. So whatever that is. Next up, how about this? This is so cool.

So obviously the Otani gambling scandal was a just unbelievably bizarre. Well, Lionsgate TV is developing a scripted series based on the events that have and are currently taking place. The show will follow Otani's rise, including signing his record setting deal with the Dodgers. And the news months later that his then interpreter stole $17 million to pay off his Zubonies. gambling debts, that guy is now looking at major prison time. Colin, listen, I don't think we have enough of these cool sports stories on TV. Remember winning time with the Lakers on HBO? How good was that?

That was incredible. I am fired up for this Otani show. Now, obviously, a year out of what happened. I'd like to see a documentary, too. I've always loved documentaries. There's never been a time in my life with more documentaries. I swear to God, the Netflix crowd, the streaming crowd. So you lean like the Patriots doc where there's all these interviews?

I'll take documentaries over scripted stuff, but documentaries historically are time-consuming and don't pay off. Now, because of the streaming ecosystem, maybe they do economically pay off now for the documentarians, but I would always take a dock over, outside of the occasional like Oppenheimer or something like that. Let's stick to sports, but Friday Night Lights. You know, that was a legendary book.

I would take the MJ Doc and the Patriot Dock over that easily. I'm a document. I mean, the Friday night's TV shows, one of my favorite TV shows in the history of television. No, no, it's a great show. Yeah, based on the book. Yeah, I'm not against scripted TV. Not at all. I think there's, I mean, ballers on HBO.

Oh, gosh, ballers. That's definitely, definitely one of my top ones. So I'm not against it at all. I'm just saying there's something fascinating about documentaries when you go back and give me 20 years of old video. But they take so long. You have to get approval on video. and that's, you know, Major League Baseball probably wouldn't give you a lot of approval on some of them.

Well, yeah, plus on this, like all the key factor guys are still playing. With the Patriots' Doc, 90% of them were retired, right? Yeah. So it made it a little bit easier. Yeah. Final story, the UFL's top two teams square off tomorrow on Fox. Undefeated Stallions hosting the 5-1 Battlehawks.

AJ McCarran, famous Alabama quarterback, returns to Alabama, hoping to end the stallion's unbeaten season. McCarran, 13 touchdowns. leads the league. Adrian Martinez, who I am of the belief, will be on an NFL roster this fall. He's in the game. He's got big passing numbers and second in rushing

yards. Should be a good game this weekend. I think what's the stallions don't lose, right? Yeah. That's the team that doesn't lose. Un defeated. Like this show, we don't lose. Jay Mack with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The herd line.

J-Mack, years ago, when you were a young newspaper man, and you were out there with the hat and the press badge in it, and you were out there, I mean, just breaking stories. I think it was like some New Jersey paper, Philly paper, something like that. Good memory. I was an ink-stained wretch back in the day.

Yeah, working for a fish wrap. And then all of a sudden, you decided that that's a dead-end job. So you decided to start a blog. You didn't tell anybody. Correct. Except maybe family and friends. You start a blog. I don't even know who you told.

And it became the big lead. And then you sold it, you know, basically Beverly Hills. It was your next destination. So you came out here and you did some stuff. And then we found this segment where we said, you know, you're a newspaper man, a headline writer. You got clicks. And so we've developed this segment, which has run for five or six years. I love it.

And today you are attacking the NBA. and some rumors out there about the off season. Very exciting. Are you ready to go? I got to just say, yes, I am. That was one of the nicest. I mean, it's like you know my biography. Are we that friendly at this point?

I'm driving you around? No. And now you know my bio? I just, this is how I treat all my Uber drivers. Oh, yes. It's called Wikipedia. All right, here we go. Tomorrow's headlines today.

I just thought the Mavericks their depth came up big and what's so key with this one is Colin they went on the road score 119 points and Kyrie Irving does

next to nothing he had nine points that's a scary thought if you're OKC and now you go home you get the role players I think the Mavs crews in this series

I still have them in six. Luca looking healthy again. I think we're going to come out on this show Monday, and you're going to have to lead with maybe the NBA belongs to Luca Donchich. I don't think so, but here's hoping. Tomorrow's headlines today. What a done by the Celtics. Will it have any staying power, what say you?

Yeah, I don't know. These Celtics, boy, that's a brutal game two loss again after the game two loss against the heat. They were a 12-and-a-half-point favorite and lost by 20. That choke city. The headline will be Boston baked. Cleveland left crying in their sleeve land. I've got Boston Handley in this series. I'm sorry.

Listen, the Cavs get one win. That's fine. Maybe they sneak their way to a second. I don't know. Donovan Mitchell's showing out trying to impress other teams. You know, in case he doesn't want to be in Cleveland anymore. No, no question. But this, listen, Boston had an off-night shooting.

I think they were 22% from deep. They're going to be fine. Derek White is not the next coming of whoever. He struggled to. Yeah, like, you know, Jalen Brown, 0 for six from three. It was basically Tatum, and I think this is a little underplayed, the stuff he was saying afterward, we're not a super team. We didn't have anybody top five in MVP.

We don't have the coach of the year. We had two All-Stars. And, you know, he's right about some of this stuff, but I feel like we're getting a angry Boston team going to Cleveland. Like, they're sick of these losses. I like Boston to go and win both in Cleveland. Yeah, I agree. Tomorrow's headlines today.

Now, this isn't interesting. Clay Thompson, one of the splenely. Brothers, much more of a drip, drip than a splash. Farse. Had another disappointing postseason. It was very brief. What's the headline going to be on Clay? So, you know, a lot of people think Clay, maybe Orlando,

maybe Lakers want him, stays in Golden State. I'm going off the board here, Colin. The headline will be Libber Three Bell. Spilly fills crack with clay. How about this one? Okay. I've been looking, spending a lot of time this week, looking at potential big-name stars that could go to Philly.

And I'm coming up kind of empty. What if they look at the Minnesota model and say, you know, they got two highly paid guys and they got defense and wings. What if we go that route? We fill it in, instead of giving one guy 50 million, we give two or three guys 55 million. And what if Clay is one of them? Clay alongside Maxie becomes a shooter, spreads the floor for Embed

who can eat underneath instead of being like three-point Joel Embed. and I think Clay going east, much better chance to get to the finals in the east and the west. No question. I don't care if Golden State adds Janus somehow. Well, then Clay probably wouldn't be there. But I do think Philly becomes an interesting destination

for a shooter and anyone who wants to have a chance to get to the finals. Yeah, they also, they do need somebody to get them into their offense, which won't be a fortune. Could it be Maxie? No, again, I don't see him as that guy. I see him as a score and a, you know, a two. more than a one. I mean, he can do that, but he wants to shoot. He wants to score. And I want somebody like Mike Conley. All right, how about this? Tomorrow's headlines today, another

disappointing postseason for one James Hardin of the Clippers. This is interesting, Conn. I just looked it up. It turns 35 in August. His numbers this year way down, by the way, 16 points a game, eight assists. Four years ago, this guy's leading the league in scoring. The headline for James Hardin will be paper cards. Clipped. Hardin barely holds L.A. together. I think the clippers have to keep him. And it's interesting. Remember, they didn't give Kauai all the money they could have. They're not looking to give Paul George all the money he wants.

I think they can get Hardin on the cheap because Hardin has to look around and be like, what are my options? I don't think he has a lot. Because you just mentioned Mike Conley. Can James Harden be somebody's Mike Conley? Tough defender? Not really. Not looking for his shot being a role player? Not really.

He's like offensive James Hardin. to get mine. And I think he stays with the clippers. I think Paul George has gone. We'll talk about him next. But Hardin's staying. It's kind of a steadying force. You know, they surround him with good players. And they don't really have Westbrook off the bench, but they don't really have a true facilitator.

No. You know, they've really got a good team, deep, wing defenders, some size. They don't have a facilitator. And Harden, to his credit, can be a score, but he's also a pretty good assist guy. Wasn't they one of the best teams in the league for like a two-month stretch? Yes. Yes. So like there's a world where it's

like, okay, we keep Hardin. Kauai's going to be healthy, and we'll see what happens with Paul George. But I think they got something there with Hardin. All right. The guy that I'm most interested in, tomorrow's headlines today is the underrated, actually, Paul George. Where will he be next season? So he's going to have the most robust market out there of anybody.

I just looked this up. He turned 34 last week. So he's still, I think he's in his prime. Yeah, I know. He's at the end of it, but he's in his prime. All right. This is a little off the board. The headline will be too high.

to handles. PG-13 goes rated M for Miami. That's not a bad call. They get rid of Butler. While we were talking with Rachel Nichols, there's a lot of stuff floating around Miami right now about Jimmy Butler. Pat Riley took some, shall we say, unnecessary jabs in him this week. They weren't jabs. They were shots. Stay off social media. Get healthy in play. And remember, I just looked this up, Colin. Jimmy Butler has kind of been a bounce around guy. Six in Chicago, one and a half in Minnesota. That ended very ugly. One in Philly. That ended.

it ugly. Butler has a harball in him where it ends ugly. What if he were, they were to move him, you bring in Paul George, and now it's like Paul George, bam out of bio, keep Tyler Hero, whatever you get for Butler, and Miami suddenly in the east can surge up. Again, if I'm Paul George, I'm Clay Thompson,

do I want to stay in the West, Colin? When Benyama's coming up, we know the Lakers are going to be there. Minnesota. Like, who's falling out? No, I mean, there there is an argument to be made. that the path to the finals is like LeBron. It's through the east. No question.

And that's what I've said about Boston, is that both Boston and the Knicks, the Knicks are a hobbled mess, really limited, and yet they're going to win their second playoff series. They're not, I don't know if they would win one in the West. No. And I mean, Boston, I think what we have overvalued Boston because of how bad the East is.

And think about this year, Damon and Janus both got hurt. And Bede was brittle. Jimmy Butler didn't play. So the East was weak. It got weaker in the playoffs. So it's nothing against the New York story, but New York needs that this is not. They don't have enough offensive dexterity. Yeah, that's why if you're like the Nick Sixers, you're like, guys, we're a player away from getting to the finals.

You know, we were talking this, you know, kind of led the hour with, you know, I would argue that maybe the Celtics have two Pippins and no MJ. is that they don't have a shack, a bird, a Kobe in their prime. And you watch Aunt Edwards just take over games. And I think we take him for the next five years maybe over any Celtic. And my take is, is Tatum Brown much more two Pippins than two Kobe's? Because, you know, you make all NBA, it's like, but I look at him and I'm like, I mean, sometimes Tatum's almost got like a number three guy mentality. You know, I mean, I've seen years of it.

And Brown's super talented. consider him he's not in that aunt class of the Luca class so I think sometimes you have to contextualize it and look around a sport and go yeah yeah this is the east is the weakest it's probably ever been and with injuries to Janus and B dame it got worse yeah so it's not a knock on the Knicks it's like don't don't as a nick fan look at this and say hey the next step is the east should be just on health and additions I mean I'm Paul George. I'd have no problem going east.

You're telling me if the Knicks got Kevin Durant, who's the favorite in the East next year? It has to be the Nix, right? What do they give up for? Anybody but Brunson, DeVincenzo, and Hart? No, I don't want to give up O.G. Okay, fine, they're not giving up O.G. They're giving up Randall five picks, Mitchell Robinson,

you know, and whatever... I would do that. I don't want to give up O.G. Brunson. Yeah. And then who's the favorite in the East? Probably still Boston. Over the Knicks? Well, it depends on.

what Philadelphia does if Paul George ended up there. This is like it feels like the East should be in an arms race right now to catch Boston which as you noted maybe got fat on the East this year. Well the interesting teams Philly because they have so much camp space and draft picks now it's not a great draft but again

they're not looking for a right now great player. Philadelphia if you could get Philadelphia to get a couple of rotational guys that defend if you could get a couple of rotational guys not even be scores just length can play second guy off the bench. Is there a world where the Celtics say, hey, you know what?

We have two pippins. Let's trade Jalen Brown and see if we can, I don't know, find a trio of like a Conley, Jaden McDaniels-Naz-Reed type role players somewhere else where now you've got seven guys. I don't know that Minnesota model is very interesting, depending on how much of a run they make here. Because they've changed, they kind of change things. The super teams are out, Colin. I think that error is kind of done, right? well it's cyclical listen the oven is working better than the microwave and if you take lebron out it probably has my entire life if you go let's go to the 70s well the blazers and the sonics were slow bake and then you know the 80s um you know they had you had cedric and parish and bird then you could add a bill walton later but magic inherited uh kareem and they had norm nixon they would add pieces but the spurs if you

look at most of the dynasties. Miami is rare where they went out and tried to microwave it. You know, let's go get Bosch and LeBron. Most of the dynasty, the warriors could add KD, but their big three, the soul of it, was all homegrown. It was all oven. So that's that Denver, same thing. You can go get a Gordon, but in the end, you know, who your top two, three players. So the history of the league does not reward getting stars.

It worked with LeBron in Miami for four years, but that was only two titles. And, I mean, it took a great shot by Ray Allen, or it may have been one title. So, you know, I think the history, don't look at LeBron and go mobility works. It hasn't worked mostly for KD, who was the second best player when this stuff started really ramping up. I think that just shows how different LeBron and KDR. LeBron brings on Kevin Love to join Kyrie in Cleveland. they take down the greatest regular season team ever in the 73-1 Warriors.

Like, I just, I don't think- I don't know how Phoenix doubles down on this team. Beal's not working. You didn't get a lot of buy-in from Booker with Frank Vogel. Budenholzer is going to come on with a lot of money and power, so you're going to have to listen. I don't know how much you can get from Kevin Durant on the market. You can get a haul for Booker,

but I think Durant's probably the one they move. Is Boon-Hulzer taking that job? If they're trading Kevin Durant? Depends on what you get. Well, I mean, a lot of it. I mean, it depends on what you get. All right, first things first is around the corner, is it? No, NASCAR Craftsman Truck Qualifying, my bad.
