Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year.
Starting point is 00:00:52 Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care what I'm saying. Yep, that's me, Clifford Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, my basketball and college football journey, or my career in sports media. Well, now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifers Show.
Starting point is 00:01:21 This is a place for raw, unfilled conversations with athletes, creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard, but celebrated. So let's get to it. Listen to the Clifford show on the I Heart Radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more behind the scenes, follow at Clifford and at TikTok's podcast network on TikTok. On the Look Back at it podcast.
Starting point is 00:01:41 From 1979, that was a big moment for me. 84's big to me. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a year, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. With our friends, fellow comedians,
Starting point is 00:01:54 and favorite authors. Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s. 84 was a wild year. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Thanks for listening to The Heard podcast. Be sure to catch us live every weekday from 12 to 3 Eastern, 9 to noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and FS1. Find your local station for the herd at Fox Sports Radio.com or stream us live every day on the iHeartRadio app by searching Herd. You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Live in LA hour number three.
Starting point is 00:02:39 Here we go. This is the herd wherever you may be, and however you may be listening, IHeart Radio, Fox Sports Radio, and FS1. There's a lot of things to unpack today. So tonight, Nets, underdog at Boston, this is a massive Joy Taylor, a massive game for legacies, because this is year three of the KD. Kyrie experiment. Year one, Kyrie wouldn't play in the bubble, first round out. Year two, James Harden joined them. They all got hurt, second round out.
Starting point is 00:03:15 If they lose tonight down 02, you have almost statistically no chance to win a series. 7% chance. Third year, first round out. So you have two first round exit, a second round exit in the east. That's the conference LeBron and Kauai left, and it was really winning. for Milwaukee finally. So it's a, it's been the weaker conference for most of the last 30 years. So you haven't, you know, once LeBron and Kauai left, you're like, okay, Milwaukee, now you can win it. So tonight is as big a first round game as you get. You don't get a lot of big first round games,
Starting point is 00:03:47 but the way the injuries to Kyrie and KD have transpired, they didn't get a very good seed. Well, Kyrie also chose to play half the games. Half the games. He was available. He just didn't play. So tonight They missed a month due to an actual injury. And, and, you know, I always say if you got a divorce,
Starting point is 00:04:07 it's one thing you get a divorce and you go on. But if like your ex-wife ends up marrying like Denzel or George Clooney, it hurts a little more. It's a little more if she upgrades. I'm a Capricorn. I don't have any memory of anything that happened before this moment. But I can see how it might play out a little terrible.
Starting point is 00:04:24 Right. So Katie and Kyrie go into the tank and the Celtics flourish as Kyrie leaves, and the Warriors flourish very quickly after KD leaves, Hardin leaves them both, and the Sixers are crushing. It's not a good look. Like, this is year three, a lot of drama, a lot of injuries, and a lot of early exits. This has not been a good look.
Starting point is 00:04:46 Now, I do think Brooklyn wins tonight. I think they win tonight as well. I picked him to win the series. I think KD is great tonight. He'll have an epic performance. But if they don't win tonight, the Celtics get Robert William back, who is the best defender for the Celtics? So now you're, now you're, you're toast.
Starting point is 00:05:02 This is every, this is a huge, huge moment. We also have an NFL story that we got to get to, and it's a breaking story. Debo Samuel, a wildly valuable player for the 49ers, has asked the team to trade him. You would like to send him to the other conference, keep your eye on the Patriots, and specifically the Jets. So the Jets don't pay their quarterback anything. They don't pay a lot of players top dollar. The Jets don't. So they got some space and they also have two top 10 picks.
Starting point is 00:05:38 So the Jets could give the Niners, they don't want both picks. Because they got a lot of, they don't want both picks. But they would take most, this is not a good enough draft to have two picks in the top 10. I was told by a GM a couple weeks ago, all these teams with two picks would like to get rid of one. Now, New Orleans is the opposite. They want more picks because they need a receiver and a left tackle, and it's good in the draft for both those. So I wonder if San Francisco goes to the Patriots and says,
Starting point is 00:06:08 or goes to the Jets and says, okay, give me your number 10 pick, because Jets may not give up the four, give me your 10 pick and give me one of your receivers. Or do they go, do they go to the Patriots and say, you don't have as good a pick, but I want Kendrick Bourneback and three picks. Do the Patriots have the money for Debo? Well, they spend all that money in free agency. Well, I didn't pay J.C. Jackson, Shaq Mason and not paying Mac Jones.
Starting point is 00:06:32 So that you can, I mean, let's be honest. The smart teams figure out how to pay good players. Most of them do. Like now Green Bay is a little trap with Aaron's contract, but most of the time, you can figure out how to. Well, because Debo wants money. That's what started the issue with San Francisco. Well, he wants money, but I go back to my theory. I think he's pushing back a little on how he's used.
Starting point is 00:06:52 If he's going to use me 30% of the time as a running back, then I want a little running back money and wide receiver money. Which is fair. Let's bring on Jordan Palmer, quarterback consultant, coach at Elite 11, played in the NFL for six years. He's got his company, the quarterback summit tour, six cities down, six to go. You do this for a living. You deal with quarterbacks and players. For the record, having played in the NFL, let me just ask him on the Debo Samuel situation.
Starting point is 00:07:20 They use him. It's a little Cooper Cup that, but what? with more running back. Tyreek Hill and Cooper Cup, a lot of jet sweep stuff. Devo, we're going to put you at running back. Do you think there is some truth to my belief that he's like, man, this is a physical, you're asking me to do stuff? No other receiver in the league is asked to do.
Starting point is 00:07:40 Carry the ball. Take hits. And that part of it is either use me differently or pay me for two positions. Yeah, I think, again, this is just a perspective here, outside looking in. But I think it's got to be a combination of the two. clearly with what the receiver market, and Joy, you talked about it in the last hour, clearly what the receiver market's doing.
Starting point is 00:07:58 Okay, well, this is what the market dictates. This is what I want. But, yeah, the way that they use him, he's not necessarily complimenting another piece. And George Kittle is as good as it gets at the position. But Brandon Ayyuk was a first-round pick. He hasn't been what you hope a first-round receiver has been. And so they've had to use him so many different ways.
Starting point is 00:08:16 And, yeah, he can go somewhere else. But those are all, if he goes to the Jets, that's kind of the old Niners staff over there. They're going to use you the way that you're productive. And so I don't see a whole lot changing for him outside of a new team. You know, it is receivers have exploded. You deal with quarterbacks a lot. You deal with Drake London.
Starting point is 00:08:36 So we've been saying this in the draft. It's a good receiver draft. I don't know if it's great. So I'm going to throw a couple of players at you right now, a couple of young guys. Drake London, USC. He doesn't have separation speed. So how do I use him in the NFL? What is he in the NFL?
Starting point is 00:08:52 I think that he's as good of a young receiver as you can get for a young quarterback because if you're if you're the Jets, if you're Mac Jones, if you're any of these teams that have a young quarterback, if you have a receiver who has catch radius, I'll take that over a guy who can go get you yards after catch, right? Yards after catch can bill you out of situations because they can take a slant and they can create it more than an eight-yard gain. But when you have catch radius, which with Drake London, I mean, he's 6-5.
Starting point is 00:09:19 The catch radius is as good as I've been around playing, watching coaching. So when you have that, that type of player extends drives for you. Young quarterbacks need to have drives extended. They don't just need the home run shot. And so I know a lot of quarterbacks feel this way. I'll take catch radius and body control over 40 time, over somebody who just runs a 4-3 because you're going to create more value for me over time because you're going to extend more drives. You're going to get me more attempts and ultimately going to get me more big plays down the field. QB Summit tour, six cities down, six to go, a Jordan Palmer, quarterback consultant. Let me ask you, so before we get to this draft,
Starting point is 00:09:52 I want to ask you about a quarterback, because you deal with all these guys, the kid USC got from Oklahoma, Caleb Williams. So he's not a big guy, he's like 6-6-1. I really trust your judgment on this. He moves around, because I watched him like the rest of the country. I watched him last year for the first time. He moves around. He's kind of what the quarterback position in college is becoming,
Starting point is 00:10:14 and the NFL increasingly is leaning into. What am I going to see if I'm a college fan with Caleb Williams? Well, so I met him probably sophomore junior year in high school, going through the elite 11 process, and he's just proven to be this. I just think he's an adult. I mean, have you talked to him yet? No.
Starting point is 00:10:33 When you get a chance to sit down and talk to him, maybe not in this setting, but when you talk to him, you're going to have that, you're going to go, this kid's like 25 years old, right, even though he's 20 or whatever he is. He's just an adult. So I think he's handled the bigness of being the number one recruit and being, you know, the elite 11 MVP and all the things,
Starting point is 00:10:49 whatever his rankings were at the time, he went into a situation with Spencer Rattler where everything's about Spencer Spencer had big NIL money everything at Oklahoma he's supposed to be a high pick he's supposed to win the Heisman and he came in and he just sat on the bench and he waited and then when his time came in this game versus Texas
Starting point is 00:11:05 I don't remember what he did but it was historic and then he just rolled from there and then I think of the way he handled this offseason essentially the most highly sought after free agent in college football right and the whole way like what would you say was negative about how he handled it You hear a negative thing about it.
Starting point is 00:11:22 He basically hid, and he and Lincoln figured it out. And it's just all been positive, and nothing's been about him. It hasn't been self-centered. So I think you're going to see all sorts of plays that he's going to make down the field with his legs, with his arm. But in general, they just have an adult. And at USC, you talk about it all the time, being the quarterback of the Cowboys, being a Laker. Well, in this new era of USC football, being the USC quarterback, I think is going to lump into that because it's for young guys, right, college players.
Starting point is 00:11:48 And I think we're going to see him set the bar. of what it looks like to handle this well. Okay, so this is not what you would call as dynamic a quarterback draft as we've seen. The Kenny Pickett kid, you know, he's older. He's like 23. He's a lot of college. He popped his last year. He had an injury earlier.
Starting point is 00:12:07 There's a ball security issue. He's fine. I mean, I look at him and I think he's an NFL quarterback. But what if I said to you, I don't know, he's Daniel Jones of the Giants. I don't know. He moves well. Size is fine. but Daniel Jones felt like a reach.
Starting point is 00:12:22 He turned the ball over a lot. Are there any similarities? But my concerns on Pickett is, you know, he doesn't jump off the TV. He got good, you know, when he's older than a lot of the players. Is that fair? Yeah, I think there's just quarterbacks in any draft where you have to look at it and go, can this guy elevate the roster that I have? Can he take a bad situation and make it better?
Starting point is 00:12:41 Or if I put this player in a good situation, is this guy going to play really well? Okay. I still think you put Daniel Jones in a really good situation. he's going to play really well. He's had a hurt Sake 1 Barkley. He's had wide receiver issues. He's had multiple coaches. I'm not making excuses for him, but that's what's happened.
Starting point is 00:12:58 And so with Kenny Pickett, I think that's what teams are going to have to decide. Is this guy change my current locker room in my situation? Or if I put this guy in a situation, how's it going to look? And what he showed his senior year was you put him in a good situation. He had a good wide out. He had a good defense. And he lit it up and was a Heisman finalist. So I think that's the team by team.
Starting point is 00:13:16 They've got to look. What are we asking this player? to solve for and what pick are we willing to use to have him solve that problem. Malik Willis plays at a smaller level of football, so did Carson Wentz. I could look at it and say, you know, Carson Wentz, you know, you ask a lot. But then I think to myself, well, Carson Wentz was an MVP leader after about 10 weeks a few years ago. Malik Willis, what do you see? How long would it take?
Starting point is 00:13:38 I think Malik has a really high ceiling. It's funny. People ask me to go, who's Malik's physical comp? I go, um, Devin White. who's a freak action figure looking linebacker for Tampa Bay. So I just don't know who you compare Malik to. I think teams are going to look at this and they're going to go, what part of what he did at Liberty translates,
Starting point is 00:13:59 and then what part needs to be developed? Do we have the program to develop it? When it comes to running, when it comes to throwing, decision-making, I think that he showed what he is. The low-key, and I said this about Trey Lance last year, the low-key kind of thing that I, my favorite thing about Malik Willis is he's a magnet. He's one of the more likable guys you'll be around. By the way, that stuff matters.
Starting point is 00:14:19 It matters. It doesn't show up on the back of a football card or in Madden ratings, but it's super relevant when adding a young, high-pick quarterback to a room, and he's about as likable as it gets, and that's going to be relevant. So let me, the Kyler-Marie situation, I would pay him because, you know, there's nothing else out there in Arizona, and he transformed the organization, so pay him. But I've got multiple people I respect. Larry Fitzgerald's like, they game a lot too soon.
Starting point is 00:14:44 There's some maturity issues. I know enough people in that organization. I trust them. Like they see what they have. But he also is smaller. And I grew up with Fran Tarkington. When you're under six feet, quarterbacks tend to move,
Starting point is 00:14:57 passing lanes open. Russell, Tarkington. I mean, that's just kind of, I mean, I get it. You know,
Starting point is 00:15:02 these offense. You got to create time and space. Yeah. And they're all six, seven, now up front. But he's been hurt the last couple years. He's been bad post Thanksgiving. Let's get past the money thing.
Starting point is 00:15:13 Should I be concerned that a small, smaller athletes, been hurt multiple years. This league beat you up. He's not quite the same quarterback in week 16 as week eight. And that may be what he is, is that this sport is hard. You get hit. We know this. Like Drew Breeze one year, as he got older, took five games off, came back refreshed,
Starting point is 00:15:33 let Drew look like a rookie. Yeah. Should I be concerned a little bit, size, beating, injuries, late season erosion? Yeah, I think there's cause for concern. The thing about Kyler is, I would say this about maybe more so than any other quarterback. And we sit here every draft this time of year, every year, and we talk about, remember, talking about Josh Allen.
Starting point is 00:15:51 Is he going to be a bus? Is he not? And you go through these guys, and we're just not sure, right? I don't think there's been a quarterback that's come through this process that we know more about exactly how it's going to go. He was 48-0 in high school. His dad was his coach. He was very predictable.
Starting point is 00:16:04 He went to A&M. He made a decision to leave A&M that was best for him. He decided to go baseball, sign with a baseball agent, gets drafted, decides not to. And then he has consistently, since high school, operated in his own best interest at every phase of it. And I don't know that he would disagree with that.
Starting point is 00:16:20 He's always operated in his own best interest. And so now some guys are getting paid at this point in their career. He wants to get paid. No one should be surprised that he's going to want to get paid and that he's going to handle it in a way that's going to be in his own best interest. And I think that's what Larry and a lot of folks allude to.
Starting point is 00:16:36 So regardless of the injuries and what it's gotten to, whether he's been playing at a higher level than he's been playing at or a lower level than he was playing at, we kind of knew it was going to be he's going to want a new contract and he's going to do whatever it takes to get it. Yeah, no, I, I, Joey and I talked about this a month ago. I said, he's a lockout guy. Like, that was, that I was, a baseball guy.
Starting point is 00:16:58 Yeah. Like I was told, Dak, Brady, they'll just play through it. Like, no, he's a lockout guy. And that's his personality. So I think that's fair. So, uh, Jordan Palmer joining us. So it doesn't take long. Brady goes to Tampa in a pandemic, Super Bowl.
Starting point is 00:17:14 Matt comes to the Rams, boom, first game against the Bears, great. Here's Russell Nathaniel Hackett. So whereas McVeigh and Ariens are more established, Nathaniel Hackett, from everything you read, sharp, communicative, verbal, how long do you think this, take Nathaniel Hackett's offense, Russell's style, I'm going to lean on you here. Will it take a while? Is this an easy meld, a convergence of style and style?
Starting point is 00:17:43 Yeah, I think this is going to be one of the fastest transitions right away to working that we've seen on any quarterback going a new spot. There's a couple reasons. One is Russell's approach to the game. So I talk about this a lot at Summit Tour with kids, with players that I coach. I think the best, the true champions, people who've won at the highest levels, they get behind their behaviors more than they get behind their talents. What do you mean to say that? So they rely more on their behaviors, their routines. So you're the best in the business. I bet you're real consistent in how you go about your business, when you study, when you prepare who you let into your life, who you don't. Fair? Yeah. Okay. So I believe that's true of the best ones. I believe that Tom Brady has been out behaving people for 20 plus years. He's never at any point out talented anybody. He didn't out-talent Drew Henson at Michigan. He out-behaved him. He's out-behaved everybody. And Russell is one of these guys. This is his house in Rancho Santa Fe, where he's got his own field. And these dudes have been out there. And he's wearing a helmet. And other guys can go, why is he wearing a helmet and chuckle?
Starting point is 00:18:44 I don't know, he's out there every single day. His behaviors and what he did in Seattle, remember they used to go to Hawaii all the time and do the passing camps? He's got these guys behaving like he behaves, and they're doing it in March, and they're doing it in February, right, whenever the deal went through.
Starting point is 00:19:02 And so, I think, one, the way that he behaves and the way he's going to bring these young guys in, they've never experienced that. Two, Nathaniel Hackett, he's a lot of things. He's really funny. He's really creative. He's really smart.
Starting point is 00:19:13 He's a great dude. He's also really humble. He doesn't have a massive ego where he thinks we're going to do it my way because I'm the head coach. That's going to work really well when you bring in a new franchise guy who's got some opinions on how we can do this.
Starting point is 00:19:26 Yeah, and was frustrated in Seattle because he didn't get those opinions shared. And you got a defense head coach. So now he's got a guy who's won with Blake Bortles. He's one with Aaron Rogers. And now he's got a chance to win with Russell Wilson. And so I think that's a perfect fit. And the last piece is Denver,
Starting point is 00:19:40 the last time they did this, it worked. They brought in a Peyton Manning and it worked. They've done this. They've done this before. So I think this is going to be a smooth transition. By the way, Jordan is one of the smartest guys. That behavior line is one of the smartest things ever said on the show. You are, I got to give you credit for this.
Starting point is 00:19:56 Now, I have been marginalized, unfortunately. I said Burrow was going to be fine. I said, I see Tony Romo. He had a thought I called him a bust. I said he's, you know, people said Peyton Manning, I'm set, if you would have said physically Tony Romo you would have been on, the problem is
Starting point is 00:20:11 this, you're talking about a true champion in Joe Burrow. So you called it very early. You push back and you said it's and so you are totally right. So how? What, what, I mean, you work with Mahomes and Alan and Darnel, all these guys. How did you know? What was it? Because physically, you know the biggest arm. No. He runs okay. That's where he's Romo. He moves well. Yeah. So we've talked about before the two most important traits in a quarterback, in my opinion, and it's confidence. And there's two types of confidence, right? So there's the reactionary confidence where you're up and you're down and you're up and down. And then there's self-generated confidence,
Starting point is 00:20:50 which is independent of the environment. Doesn't matter what anybody says, doesn't matter what the situation is. He's about as confident as I've ever been around. The second one's maturity. Throw somebody in a brand new situation. How do they handle it? Right? Well, you're in the bangles. You can't win there. Really? Well, I'm just going to do these things and then we'll see how it checks out and he ends up in the Super Bowl. So when you talk about confidence and maturity, he's up there. I don't like ranking guys that I've worked with, but in those two categories, he's up there.
Starting point is 00:21:16 And I just think that it's the killer instinct. He's just not interested in anything other than, I mean, not beating the other team and killing the other team. I think if this guy's in the military, he's the guy that gets to pull the trigger on the number one seal team at the biggest mission. Like, that's the guy that they give that mission to. That's his personality.
Starting point is 00:21:36 It's his personality. It's how he's always been. and also on what I said about behaviors. This is a young Brady in terms of his behaviors, his nutrition, his routine, his approach to the game. All right. Quarterback Summit Tour, six cities down, six to go. Where are you going?
Starting point is 00:21:51 We've been to all over. We're in Vegas next weekend for the draft. We'll be out there. And then I got Carolina, Chicago, Orange County, and we'll be up in Tahoe in July at the American Century Classic. We kind of go around the last couple days. Now, can I know where do I send people to go? Cubysummittour.com.
Starting point is 00:22:06 QB Summit Tour.com. You get to learn a lot here. We don't just bring guests on and just like educational class here. It is great seeing you. Thanks for having me. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific

I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so you all know.
Starting point is 00:25:03 I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you finishing that sentence. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history.
Starting point is 00:25:22 Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Cooper Cup says, I want a new contract, but I'm not trying to beat anybody. So the Rams. Aaron Donald, Matt Stafford, and Cooper Cup. Hall of Fame level, guys. I'm not sure I've ever seen a team. It's three biggest stars, maybe New England in their heyday. When you had like Brady, Gronk, just no ego.
Starting point is 00:25:52 That's rare when you get like, you're all, your three big stars, no ego. So Cooper Cup basically said, I'm 28. The market's out there. I don't need to be highest paid. So you get the talent, the production. Not a lot of, you don't get the ego. So, Aaron Donald, does anybody know what Aaron Donald's voice sounds like? He's the best defensive player in 25 years.
Starting point is 00:26:11 I mean, if you want to be a dynasty, this is where Kansas City, Buffalo, and the Rams have an advantage. Their stars are, Holmes is pretty eagoless. Travis Kelsey's funny, pretty egos. Well, I mean, different people go about their business different ways. I don't ever have a problem with anyone getting as much money as possible, especially if you're not a quarterback. I mean, Golden State, eight years, outside of the KD stuff. Not a lot of ego.
Starting point is 00:26:36 But when you're putting together a team, it's not just about, and you want to be a team that is, you know, sustainable year after year, personality matters. Oh, huge. Everyone is not a good judge of character. Everyone's character is not bad. It doesn't make you a bad character to want to be paid for what you do for a living. But there are different kinds of personalities that lend to different kinds of decision making. Shack was on a podcast, the Pivot podcast. Shack talked about it about how his ego got in the way of his NBA career.
Starting point is 00:27:14 Just because things you do may make it seem like you're perfect, you're not perfect. Big mistake in the penny relationship. Big mistake in the COVID relationship. Horrible mistake in both marriages. Other than that, I don't really dwell on a lot. But those things I really dwell. well. Yeah. So, I mean, and listen, Shaq's big enough to admit it. He's just like, listen, it got in the way. The reason the Patriots lasted 20 years, I mean, Belichick missed on a lot of
Starting point is 00:27:46 draft picks. They were not always the most dynamic team, but they kind of, they had two or three stars, suppress the egos, you don't have to be highest paid in the market. Kansas City, Mahomes, I don't need to be highest paid in the market. Rams are kind of starting to feel like that, like Aaron Donald. I mean, honestly, Stafford Donald and Cooper Cubs. We live in L.A. You don't see them. You don't hear from them. They're eagoless.
Starting point is 00:28:12 You don't see their brain. But there's also a tone set by the organization. Like the owner just built a palace. Right. He's invested in this team having success here in this city. If you treat players great, there's a chance they'll take less. Because they're like, I'm getting treated. Like, incredibly.
Starting point is 00:28:32 Well, you have the opportunity for success. You enjoy where you work. Yeah. You enjoy who you work. for. In California, who wants to live here? I know. Basically the gates of hell. Joy with the news. No, no, no, no.
Starting point is 00:28:45 Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. I'm being sarcastic. California's awesome. Luca Donchich has been suffering from a strained left calf, which will, which forced him to miss game two of the series against the jazz, but it has progressed to the point that there is legitimate hope that he will be able to return four game three. One source told he his status was uncertain and he's day-to-day. Another source is saying there's hope he could return for game three, but it's not a short thing.
Starting point is 00:29:12 He continued workout yesterday, rehab workouts, and it has included gradually ramping up basketball activities. I'd feel great. Utah's got both their best players, and I just beat them without Luca. I don't have my singular best player. They have both theirs, and I got to win. Game three is tomorrow nights.
Starting point is 00:29:34 And it will be 11 days since he said. suffered the injury and they were, as you mentioned, able to even the series. You had to, if you're Utah, you had to win both those games in Dallas. Come on now. I got both my stars. You don't have your one. I mean, that's why, you know, every year it feels like you get the hype of Utah coming out of the regular season. Some teams are just great regular season teams. Yeah. The postseason is a different, it's a different season. And different teams play differently in the postseason. Chicago and Utah to me this year, we're going to be great
Starting point is 00:30:04 regular season teams. Now, I think my. Miami's that, but I'm being proven wrong. Well, the Mabs are currently six point underdogs tomorrow night, according to Fox Betts. Ooh, ooh, ooh, that's a little interesting. Let me sleep on that. I have to wait a little while on that one. I mean, I maintain I would not rush Luca back for this series at all. I'm the same way.
Starting point is 00:30:24 I'd play game three and see what happens. Did I win? I'd just play game four. Yeah, I would not rush him back until it becomes a desperate situation. And even then, I would really have to consider, look, if he can't play, can't play. Obviously, these are must win games. he was capable of being out there he would be. But you don't want to put him in a situation where he goes out there
Starting point is 00:30:39 and suffers an injury that affects him for the next year. So you just have to be careful with those kind of injuries. Speaking of my Miami Heat, Jimmy Butler had himself a night last night. Playoff career high 45 points, including a 70 run in the final moments that helped the Heat hold off the Hawks in a 115-105 game to win. He was 4 of 7 from 3-point range, also had 5 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals, and no turnovers. He said he is a different player now than when they went on a run in the bubble.
Starting point is 00:31:11 And he doesn't feel like he has to be as ball dominant because they have Kyle Lowry as a true point guard. So they now have a 2-0 lead over the Hawks. Game 3 is Friday in Atlanta. Miami is currently favored by one and a half, according to Fox Betts. Teams that are up to O have a 93% chance of winning the series, which is why it's very important for the Nets to get a win tonight. Yeah. The Hawks had never rallied back from being down 02 in a series.
Starting point is 00:31:39 So, I mean, look, I figured that the heat were going to win this first on series, no matter who they ended up matching up with. They are the number one seed for a reason. But Jimmy Butler had himself a night last night. So the Sons were obviously the number one team in the league and the team to beat going into this postseason, but they might have suffered a potential setback last night. So Devin Booker went down with a hamstring injury in the third quarter.
Starting point is 00:32:02 Pelicans did a great job jumping. on that opportunity, went on to beat the Suns 125, 114, just a great performance out of the Pelicans last night. Obviously, this is what happened sometimes throughout series, so they were able to take advantage of it. Booker had a great night. He had 31 points
Starting point is 00:32:18 in the first half and hit seven three-pointers before the injury. Even gave a baby a little fist bump. I don't know if you saw that video. It's really funny. He, like, is laying on the sideline and someone at a child. Yeah. He just got to give him a fist bump. Brandon Ingram took over for the Pelicans in the second half.
Starting point is 00:32:36 Had a great night scored 26 of his 37 points in the half. So now the series is tied at one. Game three is Friday night in New Orleans. I do think the Sons will end up winning this series, but this is very concerning as you go on throughout the playoffs. This is what happens. This is a long postseason. You want to make sure everybody is healthy as you move on throughout the postseason.
Starting point is 00:32:57 So this is something that's concerning, but the Sons are a great team and a world balance team. I think they'll end up winning with. out Evan Booker, but something to pay attention to as they move on throughout the postseason. All right, good stuff. Joy Taylor with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Hurd-Lie News.
Starting point is 00:33:15 I bet the Grizzlies last night. That was my Grizzlies minus six and a half. Yeah. I liked him a lot. Brooklyn is my bet tonight. Yeah, Brooklyn plus three and a half is very interesting. I get a... I think I'm a nibble on that.
Starting point is 00:33:29 I get a desperate team. I totally desperate. By the way, the Celtics Big Three, Tatum played great, Marcus Smart played great, Jalen Brown played very good. Of the two stars for Brooklyn, one played poorly. So I only had one of my guys play well.
Starting point is 00:33:45 Boston had three other guys played well, and Brooklyn's up with 30 seconds to go. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific. On Fox Sports Radio, FS1, and the I-Hard Radio app. Hey, what's up, everybody? It's me, three-time Pro Bowl of LaVore, and I couldn't be more excited to announce a new podcast called Up on Game.
Starting point is 00:34:07 What is Up on Game, you ask? Along with my fellow Pro Bowler, T.J. Hushmanzada and Super Bowl champion. Yep, that's right. Plexico Burris. You can only name a show with that type of talent on it. Up on Game. We're going to be sharing our real life experiences loaded with teachable moments. Listen to Up on Game with me, LaVar Arrington, T.J. Hushman Zada and Plexico Burris.
Starting point is 00:34:32 on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast from. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year.
Starting point is 00:34:57 Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care what I'm saying. Yep, that's me, Cliver Taylor the 4th. Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do a little Kim? Well, you can find out on the look back at it
Starting point is 00:36:56 podcast. I'm Sam Jette. And I'm a. Alex English. Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack, so I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now, so... Thank you for finishing that sentence. Yes. I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Starting point is 00:37:32 Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Fairdi's got good news. They're best-selling legend sweater shirt, back in stock, all new colors, great-looking clothes. Shop Faritybrand.com code. Heard 20 for 20% off. Well, they were kind of the shock of the league, the Memphis Grizzlies. They lost, they were amazing. and John Morant, their star guard, got hurt, and they went like 19 and 2. And I said, I said, I don't think he's an MVP.
Starting point is 00:38:03 I think he's exhilarating and Jaws John at me and it's fun. It's what the NBA is. But then they lost their opening game against Minnesota. And my takeaway was settle down. They're going to win the series. They're young. They're going to win the series.
Starting point is 00:38:16 So last night, they were great. And Brevin Knight, who played in the NBA for 12 years, Stanford guy, Grizzlies analyst, Brevin, we've known for a long time. So I think Jaws spectacular, and I've compared him to Derek Rose. I worry at his size, because you can't stay in front of him, he's too fast. I worry that like small guards who can get past people, they finish at the rim, they're going to get banged around by Biggs.
Starting point is 00:38:43 And so you got to be careful about that stuff. Sometimes you think it's such a great advantage with Jha that he can get past everybody, and everybody love Derek Rose. So when I make those Derek Rose comps, and I am concerned about Derek Rose getting hurt and John Morant. Do you see some of that? I understand the comparison, and I understand the worry, and the worries because, you know,
Starting point is 00:39:08 you have guys of that size that are continuously playing above the rim. Then you're worrying about landing. Whose foot could you land on? Do you come down awkwardly? The type of hits that you're going to take on foul, how many times you hit the floor. So I understand the concern. The thing that I say for John Morant is in the fact that I still think that he is more of a point guard than Derek Rose was.
Starting point is 00:39:35 And that Derek Rose was a phenomenal basketball player that can get guys involved. But he was extraordinary at putting the ball in the basket. And where Jai comes in is that he's able to temper which one he is, as evident what we saw in last night's game. And so the ability to score, as we talked before, at multiple levels when you get to the basket, not having to always finish at the rim, I think will allow him to have a long career with the normal injuries that come along with basketball. Listen, Brevin, I think you know this about me. When it comes to quarterbacks and point guards, I really value just intelligence. The ability, self-awareness, here's what I do, here's what I can't.
Starting point is 00:40:18 I got to get people involved. So I don't see Jha. game. You're the broadcaster. Tell me about upstairs. Tell me about what you hear and you see and what you like. And as a Stanford guy, you've been around a lot of smart guys in your whole life. Tell me that part of Jock, because I think that'll determine his career as much as the athletic stuff, decision making, judgment, habits, that kind of stuff. Well, I think that's the one area that he doesn't get enough credit for. It is how mental he is about the game. Yes, the thing that is going to get the views and is going to continue to
Starting point is 00:40:52 get the hype or the highlight plays that he makes. But his ability to have the high IQ is what is allowed this team to be successful. Why would the Grizzlies good when he didn't play? It's because you need your star players to empower everyone else around him to say that, yes, I may be the guy that gets us over the hump, but I need everyone to be good in their roles. And that's what the Grizzlies were able to do. The other thing is he can read the room. And what I say is that is His rookie year, I thought every game he was trying to create a highlight by getting to the rim. Now in his third season, we are seeing him shoot floaters, shoot threes, knock down two threes in last night games, shoot shots that are right below the free throw line
Starting point is 00:41:34 and get to the rim. That is what has allowed him to be the number one score in the paint this year is because he mentally understood, I can hurt you at different levels, but then he understood now when I draw defenders, I can make guys better. I'd say in last night's game, I thought it was one of his best floor games of his entire career with the way that he got guys involved, but the timing of his passes, the nuances on defense, he took a charge in last night's game, he was in the right position. His leadership came through last night, and we always talk about the youth of this team. I always call them young vets,
Starting point is 00:42:09 because when it's time for them to perform or step up to the next level, they've been able to do it. You know, it's interesting. I'm Kyrie Irving and KD tonight. They're in year three of this experiment. It's not gone well. They've had a first round exit, a second round exit. They lose tonight. You're down 02 in the playoffs. It's kind of over. Robert Williams will come back to the Celtics. They'll get better defensively. Karee is a, you know, listen, man, he's emotional. The VAC stuff. You know, the finger to the crowd. How would you, as a former NBA point guard for 12 years, how do you view Kyrie, who's more emotional, who's more a pure score? I don't consider him a great passer. How do you view? You,
Starting point is 00:42:49 him? I don't view him as a traditional point guard. And I think we call him a point guard because besides, at the end of the day, he's one of the greatest scores to ever play in the NBA. And whatever position that puts him in, then you can put him in that category. He's a facilitator by necessity, which means if you stop me from scoring and the next guy is open, then I'll make the play. And I think everyone expects for him to be the high octane score that he is. It's why when he was in Cleveland, LeBron James was the point guard, and he ran the wing, and he was so good at doing that, the other stops where they have asked him to be more of a traditional point guard and get guys involved and run the team.
Starting point is 00:43:28 Things have him gone as well. This is the role that he is meant to be in the league, which is a score. It's the only way that the Brooklyn Nets have an opportunity to win. And so I always say there are different type players, and we give the label of what you are. And so for him, if you want to put a point guard, he's a scoring point guard. expect for him to be a guy that is going to get people involved in the basketball game, but you do expect for him to keep you involved, to keep you in games by scoring. It's what he did in Boston.
Starting point is 00:43:59 And as far as his emotions, I kind of tell people like this, if you got the money to pay the fine, then go out there and play and do what you feel as though it's right. Listen, I'm not, I also am going to say, if I have to listen to people say what I probably understand what was said to him on a regular basis in his game. For him to only do it, the amount of times that he did it, was to me was a bigger feat than anything else. What is the one team? When you look around this league right now,
Starting point is 00:44:29 Golden State's fascinating because Jordan Poole has gotten really good, really fast, and they do that small ball lineup, and nobody else has it. How do you guys in Memphis? because you guys kind of feel like Golden State eight years ago. You're like, who are these guys? They've got a lot of good young guys. I don't know. When you look at the Warriors, do you guys in Memphis look at them and think,
Starting point is 00:44:57 guys, that's kind of the prototype. Smart guys, multiple scores, defend. Do you kind of use them as an example in Memphis? I think if you are an intelligent basketball player, If you are an intelligent team, how could you not look at the Golden State Warriors and say, is there some of the things that they're doing? Can we in any way, shape, or form look like them? And what I mean by that is it's the style of play because people get caught up in the threes that they shoot and make.
Starting point is 00:45:32 But if you watch the style and how solid of a basketball team that they are, how do they get open for those shots all the time? How are they always in transition opportunities, guys are getting good looks or they're getting layups at the front of the rim? And the thing about it is, it's all orchestrated by the least offensive guy on their team, which is Draymond Green. Crazy. Everything that happens for the Warriors, whether it's on the offensive or defensive end, revolves around the one person who nobody's going to come up and say, well, he's the best player on that team. But he is because they can't win without him. With him, they have a chance to be a championship contending team.
Starting point is 00:46:12 Without him, I think they are just another very good team in the league with really good offensive players. And so I think if you look at them and say individually exceptional, but they all have the team concept. And I think that's why the Grizzlies have been as good as they've been this season. Because individually, yes, we understand the talent that we had. But as a collective, that is what has been able to put them over the top and win consistently. Finally, Woz just tweeted that Devin Booker is going to miss game three and four. Hamstring, strain, mild, but he's going to miss games three or four. Minute left, Devin.
Starting point is 00:46:48 Can they win games without him? Oh, they definitely can win games without him. They've done it all year. The same way we talk about Golden State, the way the Grizzies are as teams, that's the same way the Phoenix Suns are. In any team that has enough talent and Chris Paul that is running it, I will never go. against them to say that they couldn't win a basketball game. So it's going to be a fight because the pelicans smell blood in the water. They're going to have to play exceptionally good basketball.
Starting point is 00:47:16 The role guys are not to step up. But with CP3 at the head, I think they'll still be able to win games and also win the series. His son 17 wants to go to Stanford, too. I told Brevin, I applied there. I never heard back from him. They didn't pick up the phone. It was very disappointing. Brevin's great.
Starting point is 00:47:32 Great seeing you, man. You're a credit to the business. The league loves seeing you. Well, thanks for having me. Have a good one. All right. Brevin Knight, who works with Pete Pranika. They do it.
Starting point is 00:47:41 It's a great broadcast. And it's fun. So, Devin Booker's out. Well, one of the things we've always said about Phoenix, the construct of their organization is really good. They're not going to win a championship without Devin Booker. Right. Well, no, I think they can still win this series. Yeah, I think that's not a disrespect to the Pelican.
Starting point is 00:48:01 I think they would win the series without him. It'll be a lot of close games. Right. but my concern isn't really this series. It says here, the hamstring, according to Woj, is considered mild Phoenix isn't ruling him out for the series yet. So again, again, if you beat the Pelicans in game three, there's no reason to play them in four. If you beat him in four, there's no reason to play them. So you just sit and watch it, and if you get, like, it's like Luca.
Starting point is 00:48:26 If we can beat them without Luca. Well, just give them another three days off. Man, there's just drama everywhere. And Debo Samuel does not want to be a four. 49er and keep your just got a just got a source
Starting point is 00:48:43 saucy source remember Mike Lafleur is the Jets offensive coordinator. That's the brother of Matt. They know that Niners system. It was a passing game coordinator under Shania. Also,
Starting point is 00:48:59 the Jets head coach came from the Niners. They have what? The Jets head coach came from the Niners. So the Jets and Debo Samuel. I can send him over to the AFC and I know he's not going to burn me in the playoffs because Debo's not getting to the playoffs if he's a jet. I'm with you, though. I think the Jets have to take a big swing.
Starting point is 00:49:17 So I want their number. And they have the draft picks. I want their number four, 10 pick. I'd prefer the four. Give me the number four pick. I also want the number three pick this year and a number two pick next year. I want the story, though. It can't all be money.
Starting point is 00:49:33 Okay, I'm more to get nervous. Nets, I like the Nets tonight. There's a very, very good game. I told my wife, let's go to lunch. We can't do dinner. Focus. No cocktail night. Now, now, does not, now if the game gets out of hand early at halftime,
Starting point is 00:49:51 there's a Heineken written all over it. All right, good job, everybody. Fun show today. We'll keep your breast on everything. It's the hurt.
