Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque.
Starting point is 00:00:42 Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. On the Look Back at it podcast. For 1979, that was a big moment for me.
Starting point is 00:01:08 84 was big to me. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a year, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. With our friends, fellow comedians, and favorite authors. Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s. 84 was a wild year. It was a wild year.
Starting point is 00:01:25 I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care what you're saying. Yep, that's me, Clifford Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, my basketball and college football journey, or my career in sports media. Well, now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifers Show.
Starting point is 00:01:51 This is a place for raw, unfilled conversations with athletes, creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard, but celebrated. So let's get to it. Listen to the Clifford show on the IHeard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more behind the scenes, follow at Clifford and at TikTok podcast network on TikTok. Thanks for listening to The Heard podcast.
Starting point is 00:02:12 Be sure to catch us live every weekday from 12 to 3 Eastern, 9 to noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and FS1. Find your local station for the herd at Fox Sports Radio.com or stream us live every day on the iHeartRadio app by searching Hurd. You're listening to Foxxport's. Sports Radio. Co-host, first things first. NBA guy first and foremost knows his football as well.
Starting point is 00:02:37 Chris Broussard stopping by it. We love to have Chris in. So are you surprised? I said this at the top, and I've talked about it today, that I understand general managers going, listen, KD left Westbrook in a small market. Okay, I get it. KD left the Warriors. That was weird.
Starting point is 00:03:02 KD. four years left, now wants out of Brooklyn. I get general managers saying, forget a package deal. I'm not moving off John Morant or Ann Edwards. I get the coolness of the market. Kevin will not let him. He won't let you put your arms around him.
Starting point is 00:03:21 Fans, execs, coaches. The Warriors tried, Chris, by year two. he and Kerr had issues. Are you surprised there's not a dynamic market for KD? I'm not. And to illustrate your point, that Nets have committed, Colin, $312 million to KD.
Starting point is 00:03:44 He's played 90 games. Wow. $312 million, he's played 90 games for them. And they've committed that to him. And now he wants to leave. So no, I'm not surprised because beyond what you just said, most teams will have to break up their core, right, to get him. And if you do that, you've just got Kevin Durant and you're pretty good, but you're not a championship team.
Starting point is 00:04:10 And then a young team, because there's some thinking, hey, the Nets could send him anywhere. Well, not really. What if Sacramento, you know, Deerrin Fox and DeMont and Sabon, is two good young players, maybe future stars? what if if Sacramento traded them for Kevin Durant and then after a year Durant obviously wouldn't be happy in Sacramento he wants out now you've given up two of your young core pieces to get Kevin Durant for one season and so those things are conspiring along with what you said earlier to make this a cool market for Kevin Durant and look as great as KD is the one thing he hasn't shown us is is that if you have him on your team, you're going to win a championship.
Starting point is 00:04:57 LeBron has showed us that. Steph has showed us that others have. Katie's been in the league 11 years without playing with Golden State, had a star with him 10 of those seasons, and has yet to win the championship. So 34 years old as well, all those things are leading to the cool market. So I understood when the Knicks paid Julius Randall. You were kind of trapped. Sometimes in the NBA you do get trapped.
Starting point is 00:05:24 And, you know, he played well. We all kind of felt he'd regress a little bit after he got the money because so many of his points are hard work points. And I think deep down, once they got Jalen Brunson, who is a two in my eyes, maybe a three, I think I do think the Knicks would part with a lot of their future to get Donovan Mitchell. And it now looks like Utah would be willing to listen. Give me a little insight on the Knicks here because Brunson is a nice player. Donovan's nice plus. Do they have the assets to get Donovan Mitchell from Utah, in your opinion, and do they want him?
Starting point is 00:06:09 Well, they definitely would love to have him. They could offer RJ Barrett. They've got 11 first round picks over the next seven years. So they have the assets. Now, other teams have better players to offer. And so that's what you have to weigh if this deal will be able to be the best one. But R.J. Barrett, look, if I'm the Knicks, I'd love to keep R.J. Barrett. He averaged 20 points last year.
Starting point is 00:06:34 He's improved every season. He works hard. The fans love him. But he's not Donovan Mitchell. The thinking is maybe he could get to that point or close. Maybe. But Donovan's already there. And Donovan's only 25.
Starting point is 00:06:49 Donovan's from the New York area, upstate New York and Westchester. he would embrace the garden. All right. And they haven't had, Carmelo would be the last star they had in his prime. But even Mello was further along than Donovan is right now. And so the Knicks should go all in, Colin, on trying to get this done.
Starting point is 00:07:10 And some people are saying, look, does Donovan make them a contender in the East? No, he doesn't. But you're the Knicks right now. You would take being a team that maybe gets to the second. second round every season, a team that can win 50 games. Like what Utah was, were they a true contender? Probably not.
Starting point is 00:07:32 But they won 50-ish games every year and got to the second round a few times in the West. And they were in the mix. If the Knicks could get that in the East, they'd be overjoyed. So, yeah, R.J. Barrett, several first round picks, they should go all in and try to get him. I want to ask you about Miami because there's a report today. and if you look at the last 20 years in this league, there's a compelling argument that Pat Riley has been, like Nick Saban, the best recruiter in his sport.
Starting point is 00:08:01 Now, Miami's got a lot to offer. No state tax, warm winter weather. You know, it's a great, cool place to live if you're a young man making a lot of money. I think they're going to end up getting somebody. I don't think this sounds crazy. I don't know if I trade Katie for Butler because I think Butler's the soul of that team, his effort, his defense, his feistyness. Kevin, I just, I know Katie's better than him, but here's my takeaway.
Starting point is 00:08:28 Miami's going to do something. They're going to do something. The Celtics added Malcolm Broglin. The Warriors are kind of better than we thought. The buck's got Joe Ingalls to go with a healthy Chris Middleton. Miami's not going to sit there and just let it run it back. What are they going to do? What is your guess?
Starting point is 00:08:46 Because, boy, Pat Riley's engineered a lot of. lot of these moves through the years. And I think on the East Coast, they have more to offer than any other franchise. Culture, weather, taxes, an elite coach. Yeah, I heard you yesterday on your Kevin Durant, Jimmy Butler, take. And I wanted to call in the show immediately and get on and combat that. Because look, you're right, Jimmy Butler is the heart and soul, clearly of that team. But I would take Kevin Durant just for the sheer talent.
Starting point is 00:09:18 And if I got Bam out of Bayou and Tyler Hero and, you know, Kyle Lowry, I've got a chance in the East. I'm right there and obviously great coaching and culture. But they're, I don't know how they get Durant, right, without breaking up the core again, as we talked about. And him by himself isn't enough. They have to do a three or four team deal for that. They may have to do a three or four team deal to get Donovan Mitchell. But the point is this, if I'm Miami, yeah, I keep in the back. of my head, KD.
Starting point is 00:09:49 But I'm really zeroing in on Donovan Mitchell. Okay. Because I think you have a better chance of getting him without breaking up the court. Tyler Hero would have to go. He might be the type of guy. Maybe, you know, Utah, he's young. He's only, you know, 22 years old. He's a guy that's young enough to fit with their rebuilding plan.
Starting point is 00:10:09 And so try to do that because if you get, look, what was their problem last year? it was that they lacked the overall talent of the rest of the real championship contenders, especially when it came to score in the basketball. Absolutely. They had Jimmy Butler and that was it. Other guys could get hot here and there. You get Donovan Mitchell in there.
Starting point is 00:10:31 Now you're all the heat culture, the great coaching, the defense, plus you've got two legitimate scores in the postseason. Oh, that's the move for Miami. I don't know if they can pull it off, but that's got to be what they're zeroing in on. All right. Finally, Chet Holmgren, I think, is every year there's a player in the draft, whether he's the best or not, he's the most fascinating.
Starting point is 00:10:53 Zion was the most fascinating because of his weight issues because of his injury. So Chet Holmgren's fascinating. What are your sources saying on him? Because we've seen a little bit of everything in the summer league. What are your guys saying on him? Well, look, people like his skill. Some people are, I don't want to say stunned because obviously he was scouted, not only in college, but they saw what he did.
Starting point is 00:11:16 high school, but his skill set is pretty eye-popping for a guy that big. I mean, the way he handles the ball, obviously he's a great shooter, and he's going to block shots. Don't just say, oh, this is something. No, he's going to block shots in the NBA. He'll always get bodied, at least for the next several years. He'll get bodied. You know, you saw the kid, Kenneth Lofton, Jr., body him.
Starting point is 00:11:38 That will happen, but he's still going to block shots, and offensively he's going to do his thing. I don't think he steps in next year and averages 20, but I see a guy that eventually is a star puts up big offensive numbers and blocks shots. And so this was a great move
Starting point is 00:11:57 by Oklahoma City. And look, Orlando, though, Paulo Boncaro looks great too. Yeah. I don't know that they made a mistake. And what I liked about him, Colin, because I was skeptical. I had Smith and Holmgren ahead of
Starting point is 00:12:12 Bon Carroll going into the draft. But Boncaro in the two summer league games he played looked far more aggressive than I saw him at Duke. Maybe he was conforming to Coach K's system. Right. But I like that. Like he looks like he's ready to take on that kind of I'm going to be the guy mantle. And so I think both Orlando and OKC did great in this draft. Yeah, that's actually a great point.
Starting point is 00:12:35 Bangcaro. You know, the old joke about Jordan, the only got to keep him under 25 points was Dean. Sometimes you come from a really strong culture. and it's team over a guy, and that's legitimate. Coach K makes you play defense. It's about team. It's about depth. All right, Chris Broussard, good talking to you, bud.
Starting point is 00:12:55 All right, Colin. Yeah. Miami, when it comes to NBA moves, if you look at the eastern seaboard, it's amazing how often they don't land the star. Take out the Kyrie mess. Kevin Durant Harden to Brooklyn. Just take that out, because it's just a mess. But the Knicks have been second place a lot of time. the Sixers have been second place a lot.
Starting point is 00:13:17 Washington's been third place a lot. Boston doesn't always win. It's Miami, to me, this is a winter league. You are October, November, December, January, February. That's five months of the league. That's bad weather. You fly into Miami's airport and it's 74 degrees. Players I have talked to through the years, even coaches have said,
Starting point is 00:13:37 if you're going to play on the East Coast, Miami's the place to play. You got Riley, you got a good owner, you got no state tax, You got Spolstra. They make you practice hard. They make you play D. But Donovan Mitchell could do worse. You could do worse than Jimmy Butler, Donovan Mitchell.
Starting point is 00:13:51 Do you have to give up BAM? I don't know. I don't have the numbers in front of me. I make that deal in a heartbeat. Stock market down today. What's news? Even my wife texts me about the stock market today. She never does.
Starting point is 00:14:03 You're like, what's going on? Like, what? Maybe you're going to be runners from this point forward. In the 2008 crash, when the market dipped, gold went up. because gold has often been a hedge against inflation. And you know what I did, Jay Mack? I'm supposed to read this in seven minutes. That's my bad.
Starting point is 00:14:20 Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific. One week, I'll take you behind the scenes of the biggest moments in sports and entertainment,
Starting point is 00:15:32 and the next we'll talk about life, mental health, purpose, and even music. The Clifford Show isn't just a podcast. It's a space for honest conversations, stories that don't always get told, and for people who are chasing something bigger. So, if you've ever supported me or you're just chasing down a dream, this is right where you need to be. Listen to The Clifford Show on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more behind the scenes, follow at Clifford and at TikTok Podcast Network on TikTok. Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tapped Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs?
Starting point is 00:16:05 Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got? to do a little kill. Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack.
Starting point is 00:16:32 I'm down to talk about crack on day, but yeah, yeah, literally. But just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you for finishing that sentence. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:16:51 For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome to my new podcast, Learn the Hard Way with me, your host, and your favorite therapist, Kear Games. And in recognition of mental health awareness month, I'm bringing over a decade. of my own experience in the mental health field and conversations with so many incredible guests. I'm talking. Trip Fontaine, Ryan Clark.
Starting point is 00:17:17 Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross.
Starting point is 00:17:36 Because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth. Are you a good person? because you're afraid. Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person.
Starting point is 00:17:48 Join me, Keer Gaines, as we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast, learn the hard way. Open your free iHeartRadio app. Search, learn the hard way, and listen now. J-Mack with the news.
Starting point is 00:18:03 There you go. No, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. Legacy pressure. precious metals will get another spot. Yes, precious medals, indeed. They got no problem with what we just did.
Starting point is 00:18:14 Mark it down. All right, Colin, let's get to the NFL. Jimmy Garapolo, according to a report, began throwing two to three weeks ago. He had shoulder surgery back in March. He is online to be the most expensive backup quarterback in NFL history
Starting point is 00:18:28 unless a trade happens. Colin, I'll float you this one. Cleveland Browns just got rid of Baker Mayfield. Cleveland Browns have, are you ready for this? $48 million in cap space. Jimmy G. Slid it to make $20 million next year. Browns will be without Watson for probably eight to ten games.
Starting point is 00:18:46 Jimmy Garapolo back to the Midwest where he's from. What say you? So I said this yesterday. So the Niners think he's too good to give away. What is the one team you could get a second rounder for? Now think about this. Because he's kind of viewed as a fourth rounder right now. Third, fourth round.
Starting point is 00:19:04 Right. And the Niners are not going to give him away. They're like, he just won at Lambo. Yeah. He's going. If you go to a division rival like Seattle, who because of the Russell Wilson trade, next year has two first and two seconds, you go to Seattle and say, okay, the rule is in this league you never trade in division for a quarterback.
Starting point is 00:19:25 We'll give you Garoppolo in division who can come back to burn us, but you got to give us a second round pick because the Niners do not want to give him away. John Lynch has said on record, he's simply too good. Baker is coming off an injury and is really unproven that he can even fit in a locker room. Carapolo is great in a locker room and when he's upright, he wins 70% of his games in a tough division. Seattle's an interesting play. Here's the other thing. Do you believe a 70-year-old head coach wants to be awful this year and then next year have to rebuild with a rookie quarterback?
Starting point is 00:20:04 I don't. I would normally agree with you. That being said, we've seen Joe Burrow come in and in what two years? is incredible. Justin Herbert. Some of these quarterbacks are NFL ready, and we know next year's quarterback class. We say this every year. Bryce Young is awesome. Strowd is incredible. Like there are guys. Would you rather tank and be, I don't know,
Starting point is 00:20:21 three and 14? Or would you rather get Jimmy G. and win like eight games and have like the 14th pick in the draft? I would rather sneak into the playoffs. I would rather sneak into the playoffs as a 70-year-old coach. And then, and then take my chances that maybe I'm healthier than the team I play. Remember, when you go into the playoffs, you're not going to have in the NFC. You look at it and you go, oh, the Rams are good and Brady's good and the Packers are good. But you don't have to play all of them.
Starting point is 00:20:51 Some of those teams will knock each other off. So the reality is if I get into the playoffs, this is not the NBA where I have to beat a team four times. I go on the road. I happen to be healthier. They're missing their best receiver and it's a close game. like I'd rather in the NFL just get into the playoffs. Now, if I'm a 38-year-old coach and I have a longer tarmac, I may view the world differently.
Starting point is 00:21:16 Let me ask you, if Jimmy G goes to Seattle rank the quarterbacks in the NFC West, you got Jimmy G, Kyler-Marie, Matt Saffer. I would say Stafford, Kyler 1, Kyler 2, Jimmy G, who's the... Trey Lance. Well, Trey Lance is 4, because we haven't seen him. So, yeah, that would be... That's an easy one. And are the Seahawks with Jimmy G getting into the playoffs?
Starting point is 00:21:34 Well, I think if you look at Lockett, D.K. Metcalfe, Noah Fant, and I think Kenneth Walker could be rookie of the year, the running back. They rebuilt their offensive line, so you don't know how good or how bad it'll be. But they've paid attention to defense last several drafts. So my takeaway with Seattle is, with Jimmy G, you do get into a 9-8-8-9 world. And that could be a wildcar birth. That will not be a wild-car birth in the AFC. But in the NFC, that could get you.
Starting point is 00:22:03 I like glass half full, Colin Cameron. I'm very optimistic. All day. I mean, geez, goodness gracious. You and Feldman, I'm fighting guys off all day. Mr. Optimism. Seattle loves you. All right.
Starting point is 00:22:13 Let's move on to the Las Vegas Raiders. Darren Waller, you know, the tight end for the Raiders. Raiders are loaded this year. He is talking about how the tight end is more and more of a fit to carry a team's passing game. Sounds a little crazy, but let's hear him out. I feel like it's a position that's becoming more and more fit to, you know, carry a team's passing game.
Starting point is 00:22:33 game. I mean, you see it on a lot of different occasions with, you know, myself for a couple of years, Travis for a long period of time, George, you know, Mark Andrews, setting franchise records in Baltimore, Kyle Pitts, like, you know, just guys that have all the abilities necessary to, you know, be the focal point of the passing game for teams and, you know, hopefully being compensated as such. Well, you know what I feel about we have more and more six, five and a half, 250-pound athletes in America. And for years, you didn't know what to do. Like, would they be a rush end?
Starting point is 00:23:09 Would they be a right tackle? The bottom line is athletes are getting bigger, stronger. The big guys are getting faster. The small guys are getting stronger. And I think tight end is a position where you've got these six, five and a half, two 50 pound guys. And a lot of them can run. And they chose football over basketball.
Starting point is 00:23:27 And they're not choosing baseball like they used to. When I was a kid, that guy would choose baseball. Now they're choosing football or basketball. Darren Waller. I mean, you have to use him. He's just too good of an athlete not to use it. These tight ends are a matchup nightmare, right? Too big for cornerbacks and too fast for linebackers.
Starting point is 00:23:46 Right. So, you know, he's got a good point. I just wonder, you said earlier in the show, wide receiver or kind of a weapon is more important. Where do you rank tight end versus wide receiver in terms of building a team? Oh, I'm not going to pay. Waller is an exception. Travis Kelsey is an exception, generally won't pay a tight end a lot.
Starting point is 00:24:05 Kittle, obviously. Kittle, well, but I wouldn't pay Kittal again. I would have paid him four years ago. Now, I mean, it's prohibitive, if you look at his health. So I have no problem with paying Kittal four years ago, but now I'd have a problem paying him another four years just because of his injuries. All right, and let's move on to a final tight end because tight ends are the stars everywhere. Rob Grunkowski, Colin, says he'll remain retired, even if Tom Brady calls him,
Starting point is 00:24:30 this year. You know, Grunk wants to go on and be a party promoter and he's got all these businesses. Listen, he's got a good brand, right? It's partying. It's fun. He's got his swoon suit model girlfriend. Like he's traveling the country throwing parties. Colin, do you believe Rob Grunkowski? Yeah, I mean, that guy's taking so many shots upstairs. Like, Gronk doesn't need, and he's also legendarily frugal. He's the Kevin Garnett of basically the NFL. He never spent any money. So I don't, I don't, like, listen, Brady was going to leave him, right? Like Brady was going to retire. We find out after the season that story about the Dolphins, it's over. Tom will be fine without him. Tom's got a loaded offensive roster. He'll
Starting point is 00:25:09 be fine. So you think no chance Grant comes back? No, I don't buy it at all. He's done. He's done. You've heard. Jay Mack with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Herd Live. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific. Hey, it's me, Rob Parker. Starting point is 00:27:47 and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day But just so y'all know I mean at this point Mark this is the second episode
Starting point is 00:28:03 where we've discussed crack So I'm starting to see that there's a through line We also have AIDS on the table right now So Thank you finishing that sentence And yes I don't think there's a more important year For black people
Starting point is 00:28:16 Really? Yeah For me it's one of the most important years For black people in American history Listen to look back at it On the IHeart Radio app Apple Podcasts Or wherever you get your podcast
Starting point is 00:28:26 Welcome to my new podcast, Learn the Hardway with me, your host, and your favorite therapist, Kear Games. And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses.
Starting point is 00:29:00 Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth, or are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Kear Gaines,
Starting point is 00:29:15 as we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast, learn the hard way. Open your free, our heart radio app, Search learn the hard way and listen now. Chado and the game's biggest stars are coming to the city of stars for the Midsummer Classic. It's the 22 All-Star Game from Dodger Stadium.
Starting point is 00:29:41 Coverage begins Tuesday at 7 Eastern on Fox. So we're now on day 14 of KD Watch. And now there has been a surprising or maybe not so surprising lack of a bidding war. maybe it's the Rudy Gobert trade screwed it up, or maybe it's that a lot of people don't know if KD, with four years left in a deal, would stay with their team after giving up all sorts of assets to procure him. So we're going to play if the sneaker fits with Kevin Durant addition.
Starting point is 00:30:13 J. Mack sets me up and here we go. All right, Kevin, we'll start with the former number one seed in the east. Is Kevin Durant a good fit with the Miami Heat? I think it's a good fit. most people would trade KD for Butler. It is a big star town. He's a star. Spolstra is one of the best coaches. I think KD. would respect Spolstra. And he also named the Heat as one of his destinations. So I think it would be a good fit. Although I would have to sleep on trading Butler, the soul of the franchise for KD.
Starting point is 00:30:47 How about the New York Knicks? Would the Nets trade him to the Knicks where he would be a good fit? I don't think it's a good fit for KD. First of all, eight of the last nine years, they've missed the playoffs. KD chose the nets over the Knicks last time he had a choice. It's also a defensive coach, Tom Thibodeau, kind of a grinder. Is that going to work? I mean, listen, KD struggled with Steve Kerr at times, and Kerr is an offensive-minded coach. I don't think it's a good fit.
Starting point is 00:31:15 All right. How about is Kevin Duranda good fit with the hometown Los Angeles Lakers? No. First of all, KD's 34 and has had some injuries. LeBron's older. AD's not older but falling apart. So if you look at what that team needs, they only have two tradable future first round picks, 27, 29.
Starting point is 00:31:38 So you'd have to give both of those up. And I'm not sure what else you could give them. Maybe you could give them AD, which I do. But I don't think it's a great fit. LeBron and KD at this point, I don't want to see it. It may happen, but I don't want to see it. It may happen, but I don't want to see it. All right. Kevin Durant plus the LA Clippers.
Starting point is 00:31:56 That's got to be a good fit, right, Colin? Yeah, that's a good fit for a lot of reasons. But here, Kauai reportedly wanted to play with KD two years ago. The Clippers have a deep roster so Kevin could have a bench. You could give up assets to get him, and the Clippers would still have a bench. There's a lot of trade assets. Also, this is a team that defends, you know, so you could really lean on Kevin's offense. Kauai's a defender, Paul George a defender.
Starting point is 00:32:21 They got guys who will defend. So Kevin wouldn't be held as responsible like he is in Brooklyn to be one of the better defenders. So the Clippers works for me. How about Kevin Durant and Jha Morant in Memphis for the Grizzlies? Would that be a good fit? No. Don't break up this team.
Starting point is 00:32:38 So young, so fun. Also, Grizzly's most attractive trade asset outside of John Morant, Jaron Jackson just got hurt, could miss the start of the season. So I think this is a team like Cleveland and Memphis. Like, this is going to be fun for the next two to three years. Minnesota's in that class. Don't break it up. Let them play.
Starting point is 00:32:57 I think clearly the best fit. Kevin Durant and Luca Donchich in Dallas, Colin. It's a terrible fit. First of all, they need a point guard because, I mean, they need to replace Jalen Brunson. So somebody to occasionally bring the ball up. The other thing is, you don't want to take away shots from Luca. Luca is going to lead the NBA scoring over the next 10 years. If he doesn't get hurt, he's going to lead it in scoring probably seven years.
Starting point is 00:33:23 Don't take away shots. It's his team, make him comfortable. I also think that the perfect component with Luca is a catch-and-shoot guard who can defend Clay Thompson because he'll never be a great defender and he needs the ball in his hands. So Kevin needs the ball in his hands as well. He got frustrated playing with Westbrook who often dribbled out the clock. so I don't think Luke and KD long term would be great. All right, Kevin Durant and the New Orleans Pelicans, Zion and KD.
Starting point is 00:33:51 This is actually an interesting fit because Brandon Ingram has a lot of KD to his game, long, thin score. So Brooklyn would feel like we're getting kind of a poor man's KD, but we're getting some scoring. We're getting 24 a night, right? I also think it would take pressure off Zion. you know, if Katie came there, Zion doesn't have to carry the scoring load. Katie's your old star. He is the young emerging star. I think this one is actually a really good fit.
Starting point is 00:34:23 Okay. Now, the funniest fit has to be Kevin Durant going back to the Golden State Warriors. Is that a good fit? Well, good fit in terms of they would win a bunch of games. But here's my question. After watching, did you see James Wiseman in the Summer League? I did. You going to give that up?
Starting point is 00:34:39 What is he, 21? Yeah, like, are you going to give up 10 years of James Wiseman? I was talking to Marcus Thompson, who is a great reporter in the Bay Area. And he said, Andrew Wiggins now is part of their core. Yeah. It's Steph, Clay, Draymond, and Andrew Wiggins. Why break it up? I think it, we've seen it.
Starting point is 00:34:58 It was great, but it unraveled quickly. I wouldn't do it. And finally, Kevin Durant, staying with the Brooklyn Nets. Kyrie, Kevin Durant, Ben Simmons maybe plays next season. Okay, so ask yourself this. Have Simmons, K.D. and Kyrie play together. No. Shouldn't we watch it?
Starting point is 00:35:15 Yes. Yeah, to me, if Ben Simmons plays, and let's say he plays 30 minutes, 32 minutes. And remember, he's a score, just not a shooter. He's an excellent defensive player, excellent distributor. If we got the Ben Simmons that we got at his best in Philadelphia, not as bad ending, but the best of Simmons. With Katie and Kyrie, he's perfect. He's a distributor. He won't take jump shots.
Starting point is 00:35:44 He will, he doesn't force, he will defend. Remember, Kyrie's a bad defender. Ben's an excellent defender. So in the back court, it's like Steph's not a great defender. Clay is. So to me, the nets and the sons feel like it works. Although now that DeAndre Aiton has been floated, DeAndre Aiton's been floated by the sons to the
Starting point is 00:36:08 Pacers, that tells me that Phoenix may not want to relinquish what Brooklyn wants them to relinquish for the trade. What, Aiton and Bridges and Picks? I think what Brooklyn wants is Aiton and Booker. And I'm not giving you Aiton and Booker. I would give you Aiton and three picks. Yeah, there's no way they're giving up Booker. But the sons with Booker, Chris Paul, and Kevin Duran, how do you like that?
Starting point is 00:36:35 That's got to be top three in the West, right? Who's that? Booker, Chris Paul. and Kevin Durant. It would be great. Yeah. Be fantastic. I still think the team that matches up best against the Warriors is the Clippers.
Starting point is 00:36:47 I think if you look at their depth and their versatile wing defenders, they match up well. You know, I read a story yesterday. Somebody said, well, the Warriors would win a bunch of titles. Remember, they've won titles. Yes. They're the Yankees. They're Alabama football. Are you willing to sacrifice culture for titles?
Starting point is 00:37:04 If you're the Pelicans, absolutely. Yeah. I mean, Brooklyn did it. They had culture. They had chemistry. They sacrificed it. The Knicks would sacrifice it. The Warriors, Alabama football, Yankees, Dodgers, you've got titles.
Starting point is 00:37:18 You're not desperate. I'm not blowing up my culture and changing the temperature of the franchise for Kevin Duran. What if the Warriors said no Wiggins will give you Poole Comingo Wiseman for Kevin Duran? I wouldn't do it. I want to watch him play. I would agree. I'm not giving up Jordan Poole. He is electric.
Starting point is 00:37:32 That can I think it's awesome. Good stuff. Jason McIre. I think we'll bring you back tomorrow. Nice job. Jay Mack. Appreciate that. less hot water, easy on the environment.
