This is an I-Heart podcast.
Guaranteed Human.
Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite.
Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends.
Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman
help make you funnier.
This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer Streeter Seidel,
help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Where does your group perform?
We do some retirement homes.
Those people are starving for banter.
Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel
and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged.
It's the enhanced games.
Some call it grotesque.
Others say it's unleashing human potential.
Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes
for a full year.
Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds.
I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth.
Listen to Superhuman on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
On the Look Back at it podcast.
For 1979, that was a big moment for me.
84 was big to me.
I'm Sam J.
And I'm Alex English.
Each episode, we pick a year, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it.
With our friends, fellow comedians, and favorite authors.
Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s.
84 was a wild year.
It was a wild year.
I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
A win is a win.
A win is a win.
I don't care what I'm saying.
Yep, that's me, Clifford Taylor the 4th.
You might have seen the skits, my basketball and college football journey, or my career in sports media.
Well, now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifers Show.
This is a place for raw, unfilled conversations with athletes, creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard,
but celebrated.
So let's get to it.

Eric Mangini's been coach of the year, three rings with the Patriots, Jets and the Browns, now a Fox Sports NFL analyst.
So the interesting part about the Baker decision to me is I don't know really who is, is
the owner running it? Is Matt Rule running it? Like when you, having been in this league and had
personnel, you know, leverage and capability and a coach, when you look at Carolina, you have
Sam, you went and got Matt Corral, now you bring in Baker, which splits up the quarterback
room. Like, to you, who's making the decision? Well, that's a big question, because I've
been trying to put that together as well, because that's going to affect how legitimate a shot
Baker has to start at the beginning of the season. If this is management driven, if this is
ownership driven and the coaches didn't want it, then Sam's going to have a significant
advantage over Baker. If the coaches were on board with it, I would imagine Baker is going to end up
being the starter. But it's, um, organizationally, it makes a ton of sense. They got a great
deal. Four and a half million dollars. He took a pay cut to come there.
Brown's covering the majority of it.
They barely gave up anything to get him.
And now they've got a chance to take a look at him for a year.
They've got another chance to take a look at Sam.
They've drafted a young guy.
They can figure out whether they have the true answer in the building.
And then having another option is great.
I think it was great business by Carolina.
So I'm always suspicious when I hear these stories continually leaked,
how great a young quarterback is, how great Trey Lance works,
how great Mac Jones is.
It's like I never heard any of those with Justin Herbert or Bahalms.
They just were great.
I didn't hear any of those stories.
So the Mac Jones situation, you have keen insight on this.
I got nothing against the kid.
They just don't have dynamic.
They don't have dynamic playmakers.
I mean, Buffalo and Miami just have better players significantly.
What do you make a Mac Jones going forward in this situation in New England?
The draft was so odd to me.
It's interesting that you bring that up about constant flattery.
There's that saying by May West, if you have to tell people you're a lady, then you're not.
And you do have to always worry about whether or not the praise is them trying to convince themselves or whether it's real.
With Mack Jones, he's frustrated me a little bit in how flippant he was about Josh McDaniels leaving, about Mick Lombardi leaving, about how easy it's going to be to adjust to.
to a new coordinator, even though those, really, those co-coordinators have barely coached on offense,
and they're going to go through their own learning curve. He's not really taking into account
that now there's a year worth of film on him, and coordinators are going to be able to get
tendencies that weren't there before. It's, he seems a little too confident for me right now
based off of his one season. And look, they struggled down there.
down the stretch.
One and three, they just beat Jacksonville.
And what did he throw?
Three touchdowns and five picks in those four games,
or those three losses at least?
Yeah.
No, I think there's a clear ceiling.
So another example of this is I hear,
oh, Trey Lance is really coming into his own.
And my takeaway is,
you know this.
There are guys that are just popular guys in the locker room.
Maybe it's their athletic ability,
their sense of humor.
Jimmy Garoppolo is just a good-looking, confident
guy. He's a guy's guy. And if he's in a locker room, he can be your backup. And a third of the locker
room, he's their guy. I don't think Trey Lance, without the reps in this league, can ever own
that locker room if Jimmy's in it. Jimmy took a lot of dudes. He's made a lot of dudes money.
And he's won a lot of games. And he got him to his Super Bowl. There's a lot of loyalty in that
room to Jimmy G. So to me, if you don't move him, Trey can never own this locker room. That's my
interpretation. What do you make of the Garoppolo-Trey-Lant situation today?
It's a difficult situation because Jimmy has won a lot of games. I'm sure a lot of guys
firmly believe in him. I'm sure a lot of guys were frustrated by the amount of draft capital
that they gave up to get Trey. And then you haven't heard about, from the players,
especially about how impressive Trey's been. You haven't, you haven't felt
that guys are pushing to have Trey in there for Jimmy, if anything,
they're pushing to have Jimmy hold on a little bit longer.
Yeah.
Now, there's going to be frustration.
If you move on from Jimmy Groplo and Trey comes in and they struggle and struggle mightily,
that frustration is going to boil up in the locker room because guys are going to say
we had an answer in the building and you pushed them out.
Yeah.
You know, the other thing in this is it's a good division.
So the Rams are obviously great. Arizona's dangerous. Seattle's a mess right now.
But I look at San Francisco's schedule and I'm like, they don't have a lot of layups here.
It's a really tough schedule. There's not a lot of layups.
Trey Lance has not started a lot of games.
What are your expectations for Trey?
You know, I said this.
Philip Rivers was always a tough watch for me, but he was very productive.
aesthetically, optically, it wasn't pretty.
Trey's not, it doesn't look good.
I've heard now somebody I trust said he's had a little arm fatigue because his motion isn't natural.
It's kind of a clunky motion to throw it.
And he's not terribly accurate.
Whereas Jimmy G, that's the one thing you know.
Get the ball out.
It's in the right spot.
I mean, when will you start watching Trey Lance?
By what game and you'll be like, I don't know if this is great.
Well, frustrated too, Colin.
You and I talked about this a lot.
I felt they had such a great opportunity while Jimmy was starting to bring Tray Lansson
and get him meaningful reps in the game and give a completely different look to the defense
and allow him that opportunity, again, with Jimmy as a starter, to get real live, meaningful plays
and to demonstrate to the guys in the locker room that he can do it.
And it's a tough transition for those young guys to go in and manage the environment.
entire game. And a lot of those guys almost seem like they're over-caffeinated. Everything is,
everything is just sped up for him. It's, it's going to take half a season for him to, to feel
comfortable in the offense. And I imagine his answer, when things break down, is going to be
to run. And then you can make a lot of plays there, and then you can live in that world if you
want to. It's just not, it's just not a sustainable world to live in.
coaches will be fired at the end of this year. And that's just the way it is.
You know, Seattle's interesting. So they're selling that they're going to go with
Gino Smith and Drew Locke. That's not going to work in that division. It's not. You look at
their schedule. It's tough. It's a four or five win team. Vegas thinks it. Everybody thinks
it. Pete Carroll's got a Super Bowl. But you've been in locker rooms. If it's bad at
quarterback and you're losing games, the owner's going to overreact. The media overreacts. You'll
lose some players in the locker room.
Your thoughts on, you know, Pete Carroll's future, a defensive coach, he's 70 years old,
it's very obvious what they're doing.
They're positioning for next year's excellent college quarterback draft.
It's what they should do.
But Pete's been there a long time.
The ownership group could be a little reactionary.
What do you think we see in Seattle this year?
I was blown away when they traded Russell Wilson.
I could not, I still can't really get my head around why they would do that.
And it sounds like there may have been some friction between him and Pete,
and maybe they had just been together for too long,
but to trade them away and then to have the answers that they currently have right now,
we talk about the locker room, we talk about frustration,
we talk about all of those things.
Think about those guys that were with Russell
and now they're going to have to go try to win games
with guys that have very little experience.
The combined record is 21 and 34
between the two guys
and you're replacing Russell Wilson.
And you can say you're positioning yourself for next year,
but it's a long season to take a beat down with guys
that if you go into the game,
and feel like you can't compete, it's just hard.
It's just really hard and wears on it.
All right.
Finally, we know that half the teams that made the playoffs will not make it this year.
We know that seven coaches will get fired.
We know that a team's going to double their wins.
There's always a team.
So my most improved team, now they won eight games last year.
So I think they have a chance.
This sounds ridiculous.
I think Minnesota has a chance to be, like,
a 13-win team and I'll tell you why. I'll throw it out there.
Okay.
They've always played. Kirk Cousins has always played Aaron Rogers well. He's 500 against him.
Aaron has difficulty with new relationships. He's got rookie receivers, new receivers.
They're not going to be nearly as dynamic as the league becomes more of a weapons league.
Kirk Cousins, who didn't get along with Zimmer, he's got a new contract and he's got an
offensive coach from the McBay system. It's very quarterback friendly. They've got stuff. They've got
star receivers, a top tight end, a top back, and I think they fixed most of their own line
problems.
Detroit's still not very good.
I don't have high expectations for Chicago.
And I looked at their schedule outside of playing at Buffalo.
They get virtually every tough game at home, every single tough game at home.
I think Minnesota is the 13-14 win team that we go, wow.
And we know this is going to happen.
There's going to be a team in the league.
Last year, you were way big on the Raiders.
I have them at five wins.
You were right.
Is there a team in this league that you look at and you think, you know, good draft, good free agency, the division works.
I just see a Bears team, a Lions team I don't trust, and a Packers team that won't be nearly as lethal offensively.
Well, it's interesting in Minnesota.
And I think that a lot of the points you make are legitimate and good.
It's just, I've always struggled with Kirk Cousins in terms of getting over that hump.
And you look at his numbers.
If you're looking at a paper, it makes complete sense.
Just keep waiting for him to be that guy that the paper says he should be.
With a rookie head coach and an offensive head coach,
I think there's both a learning curve that they have to get through.
But I do think there is something to having a change of mentality in the building.
Yeah.
And that's the way it always goes, right?
You have a hard coach, a demanding coach, a very demanding program, and then you tend to go the other way and bring someone in that's more player friendly.
And then that can invigorate a team as well.
They've got a ton of pieces.
I think you're right about Green Bay as well.
There's going to be some struggles with the young receivers.
I like Minnesota as well.
I don't think I like them as much as you do.
13 wins seems like a lot for them.
But I think you're on to something with them potentially surprising people,
especially with the change of environment that they've gone through.
Yeah.
All right, Eric, you know, a lot of sharks in those Cape Cod waters these days.
Yeah, I got to stay inland from, yeah, I've got to give myself a chance.
I'm not the fastest swim.
That's right.
Why don't you just jump in the pool with your kids today with a floating toys?
Stay away.
I won't be putting out a wetsuit and looking like a seal.
That's for sure.
Eric, great seeing you.
All right, thanks, Colin.
You bet.

I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed correct.

We also have AIDS on the table right now.
Thank you finishing that sentence.
Yes.
I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Really?
Yeah.
For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history.

Colin you're forgetting
when you lived in Manhattan Beach,
we have great whites.
We have a ton of great whites.
Those are the sharks that we have
right in our backyard.
And, well, I don't...
They're not mature, though.
It's like a breeding ground,
so they don't know that they can,
you know, be anything other than Stan sharks yet.
I am immature, and I prefer immature sharks.
It's perfect.
That's how I roll.
Match made in heaven.
All right, well, the Lakers have been the favorites to trade for Kyrie Irving following all the Nets' drama this off season in hopes they could replace Russell Westbrook with LeBron's former teammate.
But after initial optimism on completing a deal, it seems like the trade talks are at a standstill, with Brooklyn looking to say competitive and not wanting to take on Westbrook via Jake Fisher from Bleacher report.
The Lakers are the one team with an obvious desire to coach Irving from Brooklyn.
but there is plenty of skepticism around the NBA that LA can acquire Irving in a direct-to-team swap with the Nets.
Brooklyn's goal of contending already disqualifies a theoretical package of Russell Westbrook
and two first-round picks from satisfying the Nets wishes for any Irving or Durant return.
Now, Westbrook didn't really help his market value last season.
Both on the court and off the court.
The obvious was on the court, but then towards the end of the season,
there was some conflict between him and the front office.
And teams see that.
They hear that.
If you bring a guy in, you're going to want someone that's not only going to help your team both on the court,
but in the locker room and emotionally.
So it wasn't the best look.
Yeah, I mean, the Lakers could also just do this,
is that if Anthony Davis is in pretty good shape and LeBron,
and they both play 60 games, you just wait it out, move them at the trade deadline.
The Lakers are probably best to slow.
play this. They're not a championship
team. They could be at the trade
deadline if they engineer a deal.
Because remember, halfway through the season
at the trade deadline, Westbrook becomes very
attractive for people. Because you don't have to
deal with all kind of his rigidity and his
style. You could just get the
contract. You wouldn't even have to play him.
The contract expires and you
can go out and get a big piece. So
Westbrook gets more and more attracted
to Lakers, the longer he's there.
Not to re-sign him,
but to move him. Yeah, there's also injuries that
happened during the season and teams get desperate.
Yep.
So, yeah, that'll be interesting to see how that all plays out.
Moving on, Aaron Rogers will be throwing to a whole new lot of new targets this season
after the Packers drafted a trio of wide receivers in this year's draft.
This was after losing Devonte Adams and Marquez Valdez scanning this offseason.
And Green Bay is expected to have a tough time replacing the receiver production.
But Rogers seems to disagree with that narrative, saying physically, though, they definitely
look the part.
All three of the guys we drafted.
all have physical gifts.
Let's just everybody take a nice, deep, long breath and trust the training camp that we have.
Trust the relationships that will be formed and continue to be formed.
Trust the guys in the room like Alan Lazard and Randall Cobb and Sammy Watkins to help these young guys out.
I don't trust their physical gifts.
What I trust is, what I question is Aaron's ability to connect and trust with young players.
This all sounds good.
And listen, they do.
I mean, like Sammy Watkins can run.
run and the kid that played FCS football is a big strong kid that can run and Alan Lazzard can run and
he had eight touchdown. I never doubt their town. I didn't doubt Alan Lazzard can play. The question
is, does Aaron let go with the ball in clutch situations in crisis to players he doesn't have
great experience with? That's the difference. Yeah, especially since 123 receptions went to
Devante Adams last season. That was more than the next three receivers combined. That was his trust.
I'm speaking of looking the part.
I don't know if you saw this, but
Rogers also just got his very first tattoo
that has gone viral on the internet.
So Aaron, yes.
It's so on brand, right?
He's an out there guy, very interesting.
It's a beauty.
That had to have been, what, five hours maybe,
maybe two days.
It's beautiful.
Yeah, that feels longer than five hours.
I don't have any tattoos, so I don't know.
It's...
Now, what would a tattoo like that cost?
It depends. If it's a very well-known artist, then...
Ten thousand bucks?
Yeah, who knows?
Like, it's, if you're a name brand, it's like art.
You know, you're putting art on your body.
It's all dependent on the value that you place on this artist.
So I...
That feels very Aaron Rogers.
Yeah.
In fact, if you look at the eye, it looks like Aaron Rogers' eye, doesn't it?
Seriously.
It could be.
Yeah, it looks like that...
It very well could be.
Yeah.
I'm not going to...
The eye of the tiger?
I'm not going to try and read into it.
Because we got two lions.
there? I'm not going to
there's some book he spent
the summer reading. I'm not going to
I don't even want to
guess. I love it. I love tattoos though,
so. There you go. There you go. All right.
Well, Shohei Otani is known for both
his pitching and hitting talents, but his work
on the mound has been standing out as
of late. Otani has not allowed an earn run
over his last 28 and
two-thirds innings pitch following
last night's five to win over the Marlins.
And it was his fourth straight start
without allowing an earned run and his third straight with at least 10 strikeouts and no earn
runs. Otani is 8 and 4 this season. He has a 2.44 ERA, 11 strikeouts, 18 home runs and 53 RBI.
This kid is, he's changing the game of baseball. He's an ace pitcher who throws 100 miles per hour.
He's a power hitter. He does both in a single game. If you have an opportunity to go out
and watch Otani, do it. It's a pretty incredible sight. And he has this like rock star.
vibe to them.
Fans go crazy.
It's a fun thing.
If you have a chance.
I always feel like they have more talent than their record indicates.
I always feel that with the Angels.
I worked for the Angels for 10 years.
So it is extremely frustrating.
If you look at the talent on paper at the beginning of the season,
you would think this should be a playoff contending team.
And for some reason, every season, something doesn't work out.
They've had controversies, players, ownership.
Yeah, but they have two of the best players in the game
and the big names in the game. You have Mike Trout and Shohei Otani.
You should. You should.
These guys deserve to be playing in the postseason.
Yeah, Mike Sosha's now gone, and then they just fired their other manager, Joe Madden.
Who's the best?
Yeah.
Yeah, it was shocking.

Thank you for finishing that sentence.
I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Really?
Yeah.
For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history.

Baker Mayfield's now in the NFC from the AFC, and we said yesterday the AFC is just
much deeper, much more talented at quarterback from Josh Allen, the Mahomes to Lamar Jackson,
to Burrow.
It just goes on and on.
Justin Herbert, Derek Carr, even the young guys who haven't proven themselves.
Trevor Lawrence is really talented.
Russell Wilson.
Burrow, Herbert.
NFC's different, is that there are fewer star quarterbacks.
Brady's going to retire after this year.
And then it's kind of like Stafford and Aaron Rogers and a bunch of young guys or older
so-so guys.
Matt Ryan, by the way, pretty good.
He moved over to the AFC as well.
So Baker went the opposite.
He went to the NFC.
So we're going to play a game where we put Baker up against all the other NFC
quarterbacks and how does he stand?
It's Baker Bunch.
Baker against the bunch.
Would you rather have Baker Mayfield or Dak Prescott?
Well, Dax had a winning season in four of his five seasons.
I think Baker throws has a prettier ball.
Dax's the better athlete.
He's the more mature adult.
I just think Dax's a winning player.
He was a winning college quarterback.
He's been a winning NFL quarterback.
He may not be an artistic thrower, but I take Dac easily.
Would you rather have Baker Mayfield or Jalen Hertz?
Jalen Hertz, I think,'s more a dynamic athlete.
He also had a winning season in his first full season.
and that was not a good Philadelphia roster.
So when you win and get a team to the playoffs,
and that was kind of an offensive line that struggled,
they weren't very good on the perimeter.
So Jalen deserves a lot of credit for that.
He led all quarterbacks, by the way, with 10 rushing touchdown.
Baker's had five in his career.
So in that red zone, he poses a real dilemma for defensive coordinators.
Would you rather have Baker Mayfield or Carson Wentz?
Well, Carson Wentz had 27 touchdowns and seven picks
without a great receiving core in indie.
So Carson Wince is a better player.
They're both reckless and at times impulsive,
but he's a bigger, stronger, better arm quarterback.
Would you rather have Baker Mayfield or Justin Fields?
Well, Justin Fields has got better natural gifts.
He's got a stronger arm.
He's a much better athlete.
So if you're telling me today, I had to acquire one of the two,
I don't know what Justin Fields is,
but I would take him just based on the gifts physically he has.
Would you rather have Baker Mayfield or Daniel Jones?
Baker Mayfield. Daniel Jones has an accuracy issue. He's decent size, kind of athletic. But the other thing about Jones, his touchdown passes have decreased every year. So we haven't seen much, and he may have plateaued.
Would you rather have Baker Mayfield or Jared Gough?
Well, Gough's a two-time Pro Bowler and he's been to a Super Bowl.
So I think Jared's a little more coachable.
I think he throws a really pretty deep ball.
So Jared's the choice here.
I don't think either one is good in a muddy pocket.
I don't think either one is great when the play breaks down.
But I think when Jared has time to throw, he throws a nice, accurate, beautiful deep ball.
I always said he reminds me a little of Matt Ryan with a prettier deep ball.
Would you rather have Baker Mayfield or Kirk Cousins?
We beat up on Kirk Cousins, but he has the third highest completion percentage in the history of the league.
Kirk throws a very accurate football.
So Kirk Cousins, he may have a lower ceiling, but I know what I get every Sunday mostly with Kirk Cousins.
Would you rather have Baker Mayfield or Marcus Marietta?
Baker.
Mariota has never been able to stay healthy for a season.
He's an average thrower.
Marcus can be a little reckless with his body.
So Marcus has some talent, but you know, you got to be there on Sunday.
had one big injury, Marcus has always hurt.
Would you rather have Baker Mayfield or James Winston?
I know a lot of people like James Winston.
I would take Baker.
Baker has a higher winning percentage, completion percentage, touchdown interception
ratio than James.
James is a little too goofy for me.
And I think he's talented, but he is a pick six waiting to happen.
So I'm going to go with Baker.
Would you rather have Baker Mayfield or Kyler Murray?
Easy one.
Kyler Murray is the closest thing to run.
Russell Wilson, he's dynamic, he's gotten better every year.
I don't love him going public with some stuff, but Aaron Rogers does too.
That's life.
Would you rather have Baker Mayfield or Trey Lance?
Based on physical gifts, I would take Trey Lance.
So you're just, bigger, stronger, more athletic, that eventually, I think physically matters
in this world now.
You need your quarterback to be able to move a little off script.
So Trey's gifts, I don't think he throws a very pretty ball yet, but I take the gifts and
the dice. Would you rather have Baker Mayfield or Jimmy Garoppolo?
Garoppolo. I know there's injuries, but Baker just had an injury. The bottom line is every
time Jimmy Garoppolo is in a room, everybody likes Jimmy Garoppolo in the room. And he's
been to two NFC championships. I saw him go to Green Bay and late in the game make better
passes than Aaron Rogers. So for all the knock on Jimmy Garoppolo, he wins a lot of games,
a lot of big games in a really tough division. I'd take Jimmy. Would you rather have Baker
Mayfield or Drew Locke? They have some similarities. Drew's got a really good arm, but I do not trust.
I think Baker's more talented as a thrower of the football in terms of accuracy. Drew Locke has a
completion percentage issue. They both have a chip on their shoulder. A little cocky for my taste,
but I do think Baker, when he has time to throw, throws a really pretty football and a pretty
accurate football. And the big one, would you rather have Baker Mayfield or Sam Darnold?
I am not choosing. I need more evidence. I need a lot.
A lot of evidence in camp.
That one I am not answering.
So as of this morning, Baker 13th best quarterback in the NFC.
He's around there.
There's a lot of, you know, a lot of people would say Baker over Gough or Baker over Justin Fields.
But if you're telling me today, I get Justin Fields' talent size gifts mobility.
I know what I get with Baker, you know, about 62.5% completion percentage, pass a rating in 92-ish.
Remember, Carolina's got a bad O line.
Cleveland had a great O line,
and Baker has struggled under duress with decision-making.
He's impulsive.
So you're going to see if Baker does start,
you're not going to have time to throw.
Because if you watch Sam Darnold,
you are under duress, every throw.
There is no safe, comfortable pocket in Carolina
with their current makeup of their offensive line.
All right, speak for yourself is around the corner.
Alex and I, Ryan.
We'll all be back tomorrow live in L.A.
It's been the herd.
Another podcast from some SNL late-night comedy guy, not quite.

Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier.
This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel,

Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged.
It's the enhanced games.
Some call it grotesque.
Others say it's unleashing human potential.
Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all,
embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year.
Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds.
I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth.
