This week on Thursday night football, Baker-Mayfield and the Browns face off against Teddy Bridgewater and the Broncos.

At 7.30 Eastern 430 Pacific on Fox NFL Network and streaming on Prime Video. Interested in that game because Brown's now dealing with injuries and the Bronco season is about ready to get flushed down the toilet. So boy, the Raiders put one on the Broncos. It was nice to see, though. This was a rough week for those players in that organization. So not that they needed to take it out on the Broncos, but it was a nice rally. Won a Super Bowl, 2000 with the Ravens, 15 years in the league, a Pro Bowl, too. He's got a new podcast.

Tomorrow, it'll be called Beyond the X's Nose with Trent Dilfer, and he is now joining us live. Speaking to Derek Carr, so I've always been a bigger fan than the marketplace. I think you've always been a bigger fan. And so this is interesting because they're four and two now, and you get to week six and seven, you're four and two, five, and two, you're a real football team. So what is Derek Carr done in the last year or two?

Because I think he's done something. What is he done? Because, again, Dax improved over the last three years. I think Derek Carr's improved. What's Derek doing that I watch him and think, it's just a softer ball he puts it in spots he could. Like yesterday, he had seven balls over 20 yards, Trent. Yeah.

Well, I think actually you bring up a great point. The DAC-Darck comparison, they kind of parallel each other. Number one, I think both a moral authority in the locker room. Both have very difficult locker rooms to handle. I've heard you talk about being the Cowboys' Quarterbacks, one of the hardest jobs in all football. Nobody does it better than Dak, right? I mean, he handles all the stuff of the job, the media, the pressure,

all the things that go along with being the Dallas Cowboys quarterback. He does well. Derek Carr, think about what he's going through. That might be the hardest locker room to be in the NFL right now. and he handles it in such a powerful way. He has that locker room. He is the undeniable leader of the Las Vegas Raiders. So that'd be the first thing.

Second thing, both of them gotten better at climbing up into the pocket, playing better with people in their face. Early in both their careers, they wanted to escape left and right. They both can still do that. They have great movement qualities. But they're willing to extend the play by climbing up in the pocket, still seeing sideline to sideline and spraying the ball around. And then the third thing, which blows my mind on my mind,

both of them, they've both become elite touch passers. So they have the fastball. They can dart it in there pretty much anywhere. They have big arms, but they both grow into that ability to lay the ball, so that one and a half to two and a half ball that lays out there for a while and throws their guy open, maybe 20, 30 yards of separation. They're throwing guys open 20, 30 yards. I think they both become elite in that.

So you look at both Derek Carr and Dak Prescott, and they're paralleling each other, their climb to elite status in the NFL. You know, it's interesting. I watched Mack Jones yesterday, and is this it? Do you see another level, or is this just going to be they're going to need other receivers to help him? I mean, I watch him, and there are certain quarterbacks I watch, and I think this is kind of it, and they get there really fast, whereas Lamar, I feel like every year he's like 18% better, 20%. Like, he just gets better.

The ceilings through the roof. What do you make of Mac Jones at this point and going forward? forward. Well, I'll use Mac Jones with another young guy, Joe Burrow. I think they'll parallel each other. I think they're both better athletes than people give them credit for, but they're never going to be extend plays in crazy way, guys. They're going to have to beat you with timing, with precision, with great processing. They're both highly accurate, but they're also both going to be a product of who's around them. Joe Burrow has Chase. He's become better because he has more explosive weapons around him. Mac is going to be a product of who they surround him with with

the New England Patriots. They need to get more talented people in there and have some explosive weapons around them. You look at most of his big plays there this year, been to born, the guy they got from San Francisco, an explosive guy, but they need to add to that. I'm very, very bullish on Mack Jones. I think Mack Jones is going to be a great football player in this league. He's already showing a level of professional quarterbacking beyond his years. But to be explosive, to be a game changer, he needs more talented people around him. interesting. You know, I think you've played in Tampa, you marveled at Brady. But he did make a remark last week when he said it was really, I thought, kind of a thing, like the media underplayed

it. He goes, oh, I can play to 50 or 55. Now, and he was serious. It's one thing to say I can play a 44. To say, oh, I can play to 55. And that, and I'm not sure if we shouldn't be a little concerned. What he's telling you is, like, it's getting easier because the rules are getting easier. He's not telling you he's going to get faster. He's telling you the game is getting simpler for me. What do you make of? Why is, we got five more quarterback things that are going to get broken this year by the league. What's happening? Yeah. I'll try to keep this quick. This is a big conversation. One, you should probably

do a whole show on and have the Hall of Famers come on. Don't take it from Trent Doe for a midline NFL quarterback. Take it from the Hall of Famers, the Aikmans, the Farbs, the Montana's, the Youngs, Moon, Kelly. Get those guys on the show and talk about this. The game is exponentially easier. for quarterbacks than it's ever been. It started trending this wave seven-ish seven to ten years ago. You talked to the best of the best, the guys with gold jackets, and they just roll their eyes. Why couldn't I do that? Number one, you don't get hit.

Okay, so you never get hit hard. And people go, yeah, they still get hit. No, no, no, no. The hits I'm talking about are the accordion hits. So I grew up in a generation in Aikman and these guys where it wasn't just the initial hit, it's the 300 pounds landing on you on the ground and forcing your body. body into an accordion. Okay. So now do that three to five times a game. Back then, the defensive philosophy was cut off the head of the snake, meaning take the quarterback out of the game. And it was just

understood that defensive players were trying to eliminate the quarterback. If you eliminate the quarterback, you eliminated the offense. Well, these guys endured all that. That doesn't happen anymore. They also played in two back sets, or maybe if it was crazy, a two-by-two spread set, right? Now you see there's no unwritten rules offensively. You can be in three by two empties. You can have every motion and shift known to mankind. You can put your running backs at receivers. You can put receivers at tight ends. You throw the ball to receivers out of the back. You throw it anytime you want. So there's 10 to 15 gimmies a game. So every quarterback in the NFL starts with 10 to 15 give me plays a game where you're just going to get a completion to a great athlete and let him go

do his work. That didn't happen back then. It was two back, play action, stay. take seven steps, stand up in the pocket, try to throw it 20 yards down the field. That's a much harder game to play. So the coaching's gotten better. The schemes have gotten better. You don't get hit. Oh, by the way, you can't hit receivers anymore.

Right. So back in the day, you didn't throw the ball across the middle if John Lynch was in the middle. You just didn't even think about it. When Ronnie Law was in the middle of field, it just never crossed your mind if you were John L.A. To throw the ball across the middle.

Now we're double bending versus quarters. What that means, you're taking scene players, and you're actually bending them into the, safeties where the safeties are and saying, well, the safety can't hit my receiver, so I'll just put it in his chest and let the guy come play patty cake behind them. And if you're in NFL right now and you're watching the herd, you're going, yes, finally somebody's saying it. Quarterbacks don't get hit. Receivers don't get hit. It's an unfair fight for the defense and quarterbacks are benefiting from it. So not taking anything away from these guys. I love these guys. I love watching quarterback.

I think it's good for the game, but you can't compare it. You cannot say that John L. way had the same experience that Joe Burrough's going to happen. It's just, it's a dumb argument. You can't even compare the generations of quarterbacks anymore. Are you speaking of that? Are you surprised by the growth of Lamar? I mean, listen, I was one of those. I said, I don't know if this is going to work. He's too skinny. He looks uncomfortable in the pocket. He doesn't throw the ball up the sideline. And now I'm like his biggest advocate for two years. Are you a little surprised that it's been just every year, Trent, he just checks a box.

Well, I'm not because I allowed him to wear my number in Baltimore. So I'm just kidding. That's obviously his number. But, you know, I'm surprised that it is come on this fast. I do give Harbaugh and that staff a ton of credit for letting him be him. You know, I think if they tried to make him something he wasn't, he wouldn't be this great. And they've allowed him to be the best version of him each season and then grow to become a better version of him, and I'm not trying to sound esoteric, but they haven't tried to put him in a box.

Right. They've said, hey, you're an incredible playmaker, go make plays. You're an incredible runner. We're going to let you run it sometimes. By the way, you have a great arm, so we're going to let you make great throws. And then we're just going to grow this thing out, trusting that the more football you're exposed to, the more offense you're exposed to, the more you're going to develop. And I think he's done it incredibly well.

I did say this when he came out. He was coached by one of the hardest coaches Petrino to ever play for. And they do a lot. They did a lot at Louisville when Petrino was there. So it doesn't surprise me that he can process a lot of information, that he can do a lot in the passing game because he has to do it in college. I think in terms of the MVP, he's the clear frontrunner with Kyler Murray. Then you got to put Josh Allen in there.

I think DAC deserves to be in there. But nobody in football is playing at a higher level than Lamar Jacks. So tonight we get Titans and we get Josh Allen and the bills. And so I explain this to me because I said out of Wyoming. So when I heard Josh Allen could be drafted, I went and watched Wyoming play Oregon and Iowa. And I'm like, that dude's not accurate. He's like a wild pony out of a barn. Like somebody got put a saddle.

And then I said, I said he has a huge bus potential. And then after his first year, I'm like, he's just not accurate. And like a year later, he's incredibly accurate. So that to me seems hard. Like you kind of are accurate or you're not. Are you a little surprised with Josh Allen now that he can be. pinpoint. I think two things to take from this. Number one, draft season, everybody listening, draft season, they're not going to become who they are then, right? So it is still a developmental

league for a lot of players. So that's why you take chances on high ceiling prospects if you feel like you have the coaching staff to support it because they can become a lot better when they get to the NFL. I give two groups of people a ton of credit here. Number one, Jordan Palmer. I think Jordan Palmer, who you have on the show is a friend of both of ours. I don't think there's ever been an coach that's had a greater influence on one player than Jordan has had on Josh. They're not only great friends. Jordan's like a big brother to him, but what he has taught him has unleashed this natural playing ability that Josh Allen shows and has made him a lot more accurate. Now in the same breath, I think the staff in Buffalo, that entire offensive coaching staff, has done a great job of

letting Josh be Josh and living through some hard times and not labeling him, not labeling him inaccurate. instead labeling him in progress. And there's two big things there, right? It's just the messaging to the player. It's not, you're not good enough. Player can receive that or, hey, you're going to be great. We just need to work through some things. I think Jordan and the staff in Buffalo both an incredible job of saying,

Josh, guess what? One day you could be up here. You could be the best of the best, the best, the best. And we believe you're going to get there. Now, here's the process of getting there. It's on you to go to work and do those things. And Josh Allen has done those things. because he is he is he does things I worked out with him in the pre-draft process and I said the same thing I said this kid has more horsepower than I've seen a long time but he doesn't know what to do with it yeah and he's going to need a couple years of people honing in this horsepower and get him to understand how to channel it and those people have surrounded him and done a great job with it

That was just fantastic stuff. And by the way, with Lamar and Josh Allen, he's had the same thing. You see the talent. Let them be themselves. Just kind of groove them. Be like, when you take your kids bowling, you put those things in the gutter, so you just kind of keep it in the middle of the lane a little bit. Oh, this is just for the kids? Yeah. Yeah. But it's like, Lamar, we see your talent. We're just going to kind of keep you in the

fairway a little bit. But we're going to kind of keep you in the fairway a little bit. But we're and let you have, you can spray the ball, you can slice the drive a little bit here, but, and you see it both with Lamar and Josh, you're like, the talent's insane. It just doesn't look like it's not humanly possible. And they have a rough, kind of, you know, all of a sudden, boom, they're great. Like real fast, by the way, when you love the game and you give to the game, and it's not about what the game can give you. It's what you give the game and you give yourself. You get fast good. Like Lamar's gotten really good, really fast. And Josh got really good. end of year two, really fast.

Are you? I have two bowling trophies. Really? That's one of the, yeah. Hitting free three. and bowling. My mom worked at a bowling alley for a while. Oh, yeah, that's right.

And I worked at a bowling alley for two summers. I got very good at the game, Asteroids, and I got very good at bowling. I think maybe it's, I'm very OCD. Yeah. So it's like the bowling ball. It's like a lot of people touch it. Oh, yeah. So I'm very like, very dainty with it.

The shoes, but it's a good time. I just, I go there and drink and eat the pizza. What's wrong with that? So Cam Newton is still on the market after being released. by the Patriots before the season. He recently spoke on his YouTube channel about his desire to continue playing in the NFL and confirmed he has been vaccinated.

Recently, just to clear the air, I got the vaccination. I'm in a position now where, you know, getting a shot and I've been having a lot of time to travel for business, working out constantly, and just working on the person that I am, Cam, do you still want to play football? You know, is it still there?

Hell yeah, I want to still play football. I still get that urge to, you know, go out and perform and do something that I've been doing since I was seven years old. He also said he's been getting offers, but it has to be the right situation. Yeah. So Pete Carroll confirmed today that the Seahawks did talk to Cam after Russell Wilson went down. Yeah. Which makes sense. Seahawks obviously doing with Russell Wilson's injuries, the Texans, the 4th, the 49.

Niners obviously have injuries as well, but I don't know that that's necessarily a spot that would make sense for Cam. But getting not to go into the vaccination too much, but getting the vaccination also sends a message. Hey man, I'm getting it. I'm not going to be a headache. I'm not going to be a pan of it. It's not about just getting it. It's the message as a quarterback it sends, which is I'm all in. I don't want to get it. I'm going to get it because I want to be grown up. I want to be accepted. I don't want to have to get tested every other day or every day because that's the mandated league. Well, I mean, it's just too difficult for a backup quarterback to do that. And even though the situation in New England wasn't necessarily his fault and he didn't do anything wrong or test positive or miss time for any of that, the protocols are so strict that it's very difficult to navigate around.

Also, I don't know exactly what the time frame would be if you're unvaccinated. If you come into a team, if you have to like wait a couple. It's just a bunch of hoops or something. It just a lot of things you have to jump through. Now, I think, you know, Washington always comes up as an option. Washington to meet, but now it's Rivera. See, that's where I stop with it. And now that he's vaccinated, maybe that's a little bit different.

But I still don't know where Ron Rivera stands because they were together for so long. I don't know if that's the fit, but everyone keeps bringing that up. Now, the non-vaccinated thing was obviously an issue. Ron Rivera has a cancer survivor and he's been very public about it. You know, the Steelers are also a team that's thrown out there. I don't think that's going to happen because they have two backup options in Mason Rudolph and Dwayne Haskin. and they're not going to move off of Ben Roth's Yeah, they're going to draft a quarterback.

Pittsburgh's first pick next year, I'll just tell you right now, is going to be a quarterback. Well, I mean, I think the Lions are an interesting, an interesting option as well. I mean, if you're just looking around the league at places where Cam would end up. And Cam is also not going to be expensive, and Goff sort of is.

Not expensive. And if you're a team that is, even if you're drafting a quarterback, now because so many teams want to have a situation like Cam was in New England. Detroit's very interesting. So there are some places there that he could end up. And it's not like golf has owns the room.

Guys want to win games. Right. And Cam said after he left New England that he was willing to be a backup. Like he, that's not the reason why they let him go. They let him go because he's Cam Newton. And they want to give Mack Jones the runway to rise or fall, which is probably the right choice for them taking Mac Jones where they took him.

But I maintain he's going to end up somewhere by the end of the season. So the Lions are the last winless team in the NFL, sitting at 0 and 6. Latest loss came in a blowout to the Bengals, 3411. I mean, that was one of my bets of the week. Never even competitive. At home against the Cincinnati team,

Joe Burrow had played eight road games. He had one win. And it was over by middle of the second quarter. Yeah, I too put a little faith in the lines there. Joe Burrow threw three touchdowns in the game. Jared Goff couldn't get his team on the board until the fourth quarter. And Dan Campbell,

Obviously very frustrated and he was emotional last week. Put some pressure on golf to play better going forward. I feel like he needs to step up more than he has. And I think he needs to help us, you know, just like everybody else. And I think he's going to need to put a little bit of weight on his shoulders here. And it's time to step up and make some throws and do some things. You know, I try to not bang on Jared Goff too much, but he's making it extremely difficult. Does he have one, just one, since he's been a quarterback, one fist pump?

Could you show me you love the game? He's not an emotional guy. The personality things don't bother me too much if you're winning. I don't need you to be an over-the-top emotional guy if you're winning and it's working. And in general, I don't want my quarterback to get too high or too low anyway because they're the leader. They need to keep things, you know, under control. Jeez, he's not even, he's not close to accurate. He had 38 passing yards at halftime.

The Lions didn't score to the fourth quarter. He was 28 to 42, 202 yards, no touchdowns, one interception. I mean, so far this season is 66.8 completion percentage, a little over 1,500 yards, seven touchdowns, four interceptions, and four fumbles loss. It just he doesn't work unless he's with Sean McVeigh. And I don't even know that that's a knock on Dan Campbell, who, you know, obviously the jury is still out on. But the one thing I will say about Dan Campbell, and I think we probably agree on this, is that he is fully invested in whatever emotional side

and intangible side that needs to be provided to be a head coach. Like, is it going to work? Listen, it's not like the lions are the most functional organization that he's walking into. It's like he's picking up the mantle from Belichick or something. Some of these are just, I mean, these are basic throws.

I don't care if you have pressure. Some of the stuff's basic. And the fumble issue is not going away. Yeah, listen, I, he thought when he has perfect, you know, he's like Baker. When he has perfect protection in a run game and throws on third and two, he can throw a beautiful ball. That's not the league.

That's not a realistic approach. That's not the way the league works. No, but I would honestly, I think Baker is much, much better than Jared Gough. Like, Baker, for all of the critiques that we have of him, he was in a very dysfunctional situation and got better. Like, he survived that and managed that. Like, his rookie year, he was able to put up numbers. It's not like it was a complete and utter disaster. I think he's significantly better than Jared Gough.

And look what good coaching has done for Baker. Like, has he won the big games and the big games? moments and still he's trying to get to that, but he's not, like, causing them to lose. Well, I don't know. He's been bad. There's moments. You're higher on Baker than I am. I think Goff got to a Super Bowl, and I... Well, Baker's also playing through an injury, so I'm going to give him a little grace there, but I just, this is disappointing from Jared Goff. So in their first season, or first, I'm sorry, first game without John Gruden, the Raiders won a much-needed game against the Broncos. And dominated. Back-to-back losses, but Vegas was in complete control.

the offense scored a season high, 34 points at 426 total yards, and the defense sacked Teddy Bridgewater five times and intercepted him three times on the way to the 34-24 victory. After the game, Derek Carr said that the win brought the team closer together in what was an emotional week. I mean, they had 345 yards. The Seahawks defense gives up 450 to 475 yards every week. it's just the Canada, the offensive coordinator. You can't tell me they don't have weapons. That's why I say, if you put Aaron Rogers with this group of people, they would score a lot of points. They're wide receivers. Nagei Harris can play, by the way. Naji Harris, nice player.

He's better than I thought. I mean, I thought he'd be a good running back, but he's got a lot of dance to him. Nagee Harris has been a good, good rookie. Wide receivers are always excellent. O-line's not good. Play-galling is, it's really the play-calling is absurdly. conservative. Even Collins were said last night. Can we throw a few plays in here, a few passing plays?

Finally, tonight, Buffalo, Tennessee, Mafia invades Nashville. Over the last four games, the Buffalo Bills have outscored opponents by nearly 24 points a game. It's like Alabama. Their offensive line and running game is probably their weakness. It's not terrible, but their old lines kind of average. So tonight, for Tennessee to win this thing, they're going to need a couple breaks and they're going to have to get pressure on Josh Allen because they have a great turnover differential.

They're plus 11, meaning they don't give it to you and they take it from you. So hard to beat Buffalo right now, best team in the league. But you know, these standalone games, Monday night football, gets a little crazy, the crowd in Nashville, great fans down there are going to be absolutely, it's one of the bigger games for them in the regular season ever.
