Then he goes to Baltimore. Nine years wins the Super Bowl. NFL network analyst, friend of our show, his name is Brian Billick, and he is joining us live. So it's interesting. I just saw Stefan Gilmore got picked up by the Carolina Panthers, and this is the trade deadline, you know, portion of, the season where a team that maybe starts out one in five says to themselves, let's get draft

picks. I do not think it's a white flag by the Patriots. I just think it's a declining player and they don't want to pay it. Carolina goes out in the last week and gets two corners. My interpretation, Brian, is that they think they're pretty good and they have an aggressive billionaire owner and they think they can get to the playoffs in the NFC, maybe as a while. That's my interpretation of why they give up draft picks for these corners. You tell me, am I wrong? What do you make of Carolina's moves? No, they obviously believe, and Matt Rule has done a great job. Their defense has been spectacular, and they feel like they can strike.

Sam Darnold's been kind of rejuvenated for them. So they feel like in a league that is very homogeneous right now. They're not a lot of outliers. There's no really dominant team. They can be a factor, and you've got to give them credit for it. Plus, Matt Rule, he's got to get those pelts on the wall, so to speak. Belichick can do whatever he wants. He's got those six Super Bowls and put his back pocket.

So I can make whatever I move I want, whether we're regrouping or whatever, it's no big deal. Matt Rule, yeah, he sees, I got a little bit of a window here because I got to show that we indeed can be that team. So, yeah, I love the aggressive part of what they're doing. So I want to ask you, you know the Ravens culture well. I defended John Harbaugh yesterday. I said the Vic Fangio John Harbaugh thing where, you know, Harbaugh runs the ball. They get a yardage barrier they break. And I said, listen, if I run a company and you run a company, don't worry about mine.

I'm not going to worry about you. What matters to my guys in the room doesn't matter to your guys in the room. And I got to keep 55 alpha males energized, focused, and know that I care about them, not only the team, but I care about them. And if there's a record or a bonus, I'm going to do what I got to do to get the bonus. So I defended Harbaugh. You know both Harbaugh and Fangio. Fan Gio said it's Bush League. The game is over. I know you know both well. Where do you land on this as a veteran coach. You know, as a guy who's done his share of Bush League things for statistics, you know, I'm right up there. Yeah, you can look at it and go, okay, why are you doing that? But the fact of the matter is all the things you just said were true. When we were going after

the scoring record when I was in Minnesota, we were going after the rushing record when I was in Baltimore with Jamal Lewis. You're right. It is important to those guys. And they want to show that you embrace it. I mean, they now have 48 games where they've rushed for better than 100 yards. Yeah, that's substantial. And in the grand scheme of things, yeah, is it kind of Bush League? Yeah, probably. Would I have done it? Oh, yeah, absolutely. I'm a little surprised that. I'm a little surprised that Vic was bothered by it. Yeah, you are to a degree. I think he understands it. The frustration of losing the game, that certainly had no impact on the game. There might be something else going on in the background as to why he verbalized it that way. But yeah, you're exactly right. The players need to show that you're going to fight for them. And this was John Harrow. ball's way saying, yeah, it's important to you, so it's important to me. Yeah, we'll go get the record. So, you know, Joey and I have argued about this. One of the things we disagree with, it's kind of funny. I'm always like, listen, you've got to win on Sunday because winning has a momentum and an inertia and the drive to work is better and your owner's happier and your GM's not breathing

down your neck. And so everybody wants to play the young quarterbacks. And I'm always like, I'm going to win on Sunday. And so I understood the play Garoppolo early, play Andy Dalton early because, as you know, driving to the facility, O and 3, is a lousy life. Every owner says they're patient, Brian, none of them are. So I understood starting Dalton. And Nagy today, Matt Nagy says, okay, I'm going to go Justin Fields. Your thoughts and ideas on starting him now, what should expectations be if I'm a bare fan or a media member?

There's going to be turbulence. You tell me what you've seen with Chicago, the timeline Justin Fields today and going forward. Yeah, that's always an interesting one. I am one that believes you got to play, particularly you're talking about a first round pick. You've got to plan. It's the only place where you really learn. Every snap that Justin Fields takes is going to make the Chicago Bears better in 2022. Now, does that help Matt Nagy? It's hard to say. He needs to look over the rearview mirror at what happened to John Fox when he kind of did the same thing and we're going to go, you know, with the quarterback. And yeah, the organization understands it's a rookie. But at the

the year go, I didn't think it was going to be this bad and they make a change. So that's a factor as well. But yeah, I'm all for these rookies playing because it's the only place. I mean, when you're staying on the sideline, they're saying, okay, you can learn something. All you learn is where's the stadium and where do the guys go to eat afterwards? You're not learned. You've got to be in the game. You just talked about it.

On Sundays, that's where you learn and that's where these young guys and they will be a better team. If indeed Justin Fields is going to be a guy, you're going to be a better team quicker. and that's got to happen in today's NFL. In the NBA, there's a tampering rule where you literally can't even acknowledge if you're going to be a free agent. You can't even acknowledge another team. So I thought it was funny that Aaron Rogers has had this little flirtation with Mike Tomlin.

And listen, I'm not going to be hyperbolic here. But it is interesting. They're the one really great defense with a Super Bowl winning coach that could certainly use a quarterback in a year. There's something there, right? There's something there? Oh, gosh, yeah. Yeah, to me, that's like the old saying that just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean

they're not really after me. Well, just because I made an innocent statement doesn't mean there wasn't something else that maybe could go with that later on. I'm with you 100%. Pittsburgh would be a great landing for Aaron Rogers. The only question I would have is, and for all the reasons you outline, I mean, this is a good quarterback division now with, well, obviously, Lamar Jackson and Joe Burrow and Baker Mayfield, Pittsburgh's going to be left wanting and plugging in and Aaron Rogers would

certainly change that equation. The question is, will Pittsburgh pay the ticket? At the end of the day, this is going to be a big one. Pittsburgh hasn't typically done that. But yeah, I'm with you. The chances have taken Aaron Rogers, however short term it may be, versus the 50-50 crapshoot of drafting a quarterback and the development time. We just talked about that. You play him as a rookie and there's going to be some, that timeline would concern me. All right. So you got, you know, we got a lot of young quarterbacks and a lot of young coaches, and I know you watch all this stuff for the NFL network. We get a little giddy with Justin Herbert out here because the Chargers have been, there's ghosts in the building. Nobody's missed more kicks and had more crazy losses than the Chargers. And I'm watching Justin Herbert, Mark Trussman, a guy you know, and I'm asking him yesterday about Herbert. He just, he said, he knew Bill Walsh. She said, I can't believe how good this kid is. when you see Herbert, and you've had a lot of different quarterbacks in your career, different styles,

what do you make of them? What do you see beyond the obvious stuff that even I can see? Yeah, I love the kid. And what's most impressive is there's a calmness about him that belies his age, even with all the stuff going on around him that you just alluded to. I mean, this guy's on pace to be better than 650 throws. In just his second year, almost 70% completion.

closing in on 5,000 yards. I'm talking about if he keeps his trend. You know, touchdowns in the high 30s, you know, low, low T's 12, 13 interceptions. So these are big numbers for a young quarterback on a team that has had some stuff going on around. Yeah. So I think there's everything to love about Justin Herbert.

And this is a guy going forward. Like I said, the thing I love is there's a calmness about him in the pocket that's belied by the fact he's so young. By the way, Brian's an investor and ambassador for X-Tech equipment, shoulder pads, accessories for football. In fact, I think you're wearing it right there on your hipster vest there. You're very hip. Good luck with your new golf game, by the way.

And so you see, you get a lot of L.A. sports, and we try to balance it out.

But I'm telling you, man, the people in Los Angeles, I know Matt Stafford's in town. Like, I get it. But, man, when I, you talk, you, uh, I walk by a restaurant. last night I was going to dinner with a friend. And as I walked around the corner, they were talking about Justin Herbert, a table of six people. And I was like, I'm telling you, the kid is, there's a huge buzz.

You know, they all said there was 90% Raider fans in that building. But I had a friend go and he took a picture. And there was a lot of Charger fans there. 90 is excessive. There was a lot of Charger fans there. And I think, 90's a lot. And I think a lot of it's driven by Justin Herbert. Yeah.

I mean, you're literally going to chance eight times a year eight to nine times a year to watch. It's just a remarkable. Am I hyping it too much? I don't want to be that guy. No, I think people are excited about Justin Herbert. I do think that this, like if I have to declare Los Angeles for a team, it is still the Rams. Yeah, well, it's really a Raiders town, but it's a Rams town.

But, man, Herbert's special. He is. He is special. Joy with the News. No, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the Herdline News. Well, it's finally been announced. and Fields will remain the Bears starting quarterback going forward this season.

Here we go. Coach Matt Nagy announced it earlier today. I told you the last couple of weeks we've had some good conversations internally. It's helped us in the last couple of weeks. Continuing that process this week, it's led to making a decision to move with Justin as a starter. The plan and the process that we had going into this was important to understand. and then when Andy unfortunately got hurt with his knee, that sped the process up, that sped the plan up.

Well, I'm just really glad Justin Fields got that game and a half to get ready to be playing in the NFL. That sounds petty right there. I mean, now he's ready. He needed that extra game and a half to watch Andy Dalton to figure out how to play NFL football? Well, when I teach my kids how to drive, they need a day or two in the parking lot when nobody's there.

Then I give them the car to drive in the parking lot. Day can mean a lot. Justin Fields could have started week one. If you could start now, if you could be the start of moving forward, you could start a week one, which is my problem with this whole process. Now, Brian, Billick just agreed with me. Jimmy Johnson also agrees with me. And I said this when this whole thing began.

I don't think this is about if Justin Fields is ready to start week one. Of course, all these rookies could probably use six more preseason games or a little bit more. time in the facility to get to know how to everything works and how it's the best way to get to work and all that stuff but Matt Nagy is making decisions to win to your point on Sunday yeah that's what the Andy Don't decision is out that's what I would do that that's what I would do too I'm for winning I'm for keeping my job I'm not for growth school that they're in that's right I'm not for growth of anybody I'm for winning salon that she likes like I'm for that right I like this juice spot on my way I'm selfish I want to win I'm incredibly selfish that I want to win I'm incredibly

person. I want to win Sunday. But that's what it was about. It's not about if Justin Fields is ready to start week one. He was ready to start week one. The extra time watching Andy Dalton in game one and half of the Cincinnati game did not all of a sudden make him capable of being an NFL starter. This is about Matt Nagy keeping his job, which I can understand. But you can't tell me if all of a sudden now he's the starter that he wasn't available week one.

Now Andy Dalton is obviously injured and as he mentioned, that sped up the process. So would it benefit Justin Fields to sit a little bit more? Who knows? We're never going to know. But to Brian's point and to Jimmy Johnson's point, you don't get better at playing football by watching someone else play football. Okay, I like the Raiders by two touchdowns, though, over the Bears Sunday. It's one of my bets. I'll tell you right, I do. I really do. I love the Raiders in this game.

They're favored by five and a half, according to Foxbat. And look, he is going to struggle. Yes, it's hard. They're not a great team. He is a rookie. He's going to make mistakes. Battle line. It's not that he has been over.

the top spectacular to the point where this was particularly obvious. But my argument for these young men starting right away is the developments of it. When you take a young quarterback, you essentially have grace. But this is what happens when you put your coach and GM in a position where they don't have grace. They're going to make decisions for right now instead of the future of the Chicago Bears. And that is Justin Fields. So Ben Rothesberger has not been great to put kindly. It was awful. Through the first four weeks of the 2021 season.

Mike Tomlin was asked if Rathesberger remains the team's best option at quarterback. Absolutely. You know, what he does and what he's done makes me really comfortable in saying that. Ben used to be able to run really good when he was young. Those days are behind him. Other than that, I don't see much that that's not a discussion in terms of technical alterations or quality of play that can be improved? I mean, I would have to agree with him in the spot.

I don't think that Dwayne Haskins or Mason Rudolph is a better option for the Steelers at this point. Let's be honest. It's a lost season. Yeah. You just have to write it off. By the way, last year of the Patriots, it was a lost season. So it doesn't have to be a lost season for two seasons. You could go get Aaron Rogers.

But this is a lost season. You're a good sports city. Got your penguins, you got your Steelers, they're mostly good. The season's over. You didn't mention the pirates. And the pirates are weak. AAA team. I mean, they are.

They're a AAA baseball team. I mean, it's right. They have a AAA budget. So this is just, it happens. By the way, it does. It does. And it's... Garoppolo got hurt last year.

Lost season. Mike Tomlin has never had a losing season. Don't fire people. It just happened. I don't think that there's anything to overreact to. And it's not that this wasn't particularly predictable. Because we saw this deterioration at the end of last season, despite that 11 game winning streak. I believe, and I've been saying this for a long time, that the Steelers missed their

their Super Bowl window. You have to take advantage of situations and the grace that the football, the sports gods give you. You had the terrible bangles and the terrible Browns in your division forever, completely dysfunctional. When your division, to be aggressive, they lost their Super Bowl window. That's what it is. Like when Ben was healthy and they had the pieces that they needed around them, they didn't take advantage of it. And now you have to rebuild. you could continue this little flirtation you have going on with Aaron Rogers, which I completely support. They do also Broncos this Sunday. That's a weird game.

It is a weird game. They're favorite by one and a half when thoughts about it. It'll be the ugliest game of the week. By far. I can't live that way. The over-underers should be six. It's going to be awful. It's going to be the most boring game of the weekend.

Neither offense will move the off. The offenses are not good. Not good. So Aaron Judge and the Yankees suffered a heartbreaking loss to the Red Sox last night and we're eliminated from the playoffs. And Aaron Judge made it clear where he sees his future. You know, I want to be a Yankee for life. You know, I want to wear these pinstrives the rest of my career. You know, no better place to play.

No better organization to be a part of giving a lot, sacrifice a lot, you know, for this team. And, you know, they've sacrificed a lot and given me this opportunity, give me this chance. And, you know, I want to bring it home here, you know. But like I said, you know, you never know what the future holds for you, you know. So I just got to continue to do what I can. Oh, New York sports. awful down bad they're a weird team all year they had win streaks losing streaks they don't feel the ball while they don't run well they're they're too heavy uh based on power garrick cole was

disappointing they had a closer get hurt it was just a weird year all around like the dodgers were hurt they had an excuse and they had one losing streak but the dodgers were a good team just injuries yankees were not a good team there were a lot of stretches they were a bad team well they lost six to two to boston last night in the wildcard game for the fourth playoff spot in the a l judge has a final year of arbitration before he's due to become a free agent. So the Red Sox will face off against the Tampa Bay Rays in the AL Division Series. Game one is tomorrow. Rays will smash them.

Begins at 3 Eastern on FS1, and the rays are currently favored in game one, according to Foxbat. Yeah. Joy with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The herd-line news. You know, I went for tea today. As you know, I'm battling this thing, and I'm fine.

I'm not saying this is no big deal. Sometimes you're sick. You go to work when you're sick. I'm sick. I saw, we have a bunch of teas back there. Yes. And they have like,

it's an Australian company. It's very good. It's called Blue Stone Lane Coffee and then tea. It's very, very good. Somebody explained to me what camamil is. I drink camamil all the time. What is it? A flower, a plant?

Yeah, I mean, it's a plant. What does it taste like? It tastes like, um, What does it taste like? It's a daisy-like plant. That's what it is. It's just very soft tasting. It's not very aggressive.

I like to drink it, you know, like before bed. You can drink it. Oh, it's a calming tea? Yeah. All right, because I've been hearing a lot of tea snobs. Oh, you've got to try chamomile. No, I like chamomile tea. Yeah.

I have camamil tea, ginger tea, I have a green tea every morning. Every morning? Mm-hmm. All right. Well, I'm drinking a... sticks and daisies in here. It's just a bag of nothing. I don't even know what it is.

You know what's really good tea? Actually, lavender tea. Love the smell of lavender. I drink a lot of tea. Well, we are nearly a month into the season. So I think a month is long enough to give our students grades, early grades, Joey, for all the quarterbacks. These are rookies, some will be rookies, some are veterans in new places. So that's our threshold. Rookies or new quarterbacks in new places. Here's our report cards. Okay.

What grade would you give Mack Jones so far with the Patriots? A C. Okay. So he has the highest completion. percentage, 70% of any quarterback through his first four career games in league history. But he's only got four touchdown passes. Only Baker Mayfield has fewer. He's not throwing the ball down the field.

And they're averaging 17 points a game. Now, I give him a C to a C plus because he has grasped a pretty complex system. He's doing what they're asking of him. And I think that's about all you can do. But let's not go crazy here. He's not capable of adding a dimension if the play breaks down. It has to be set up for him. And he's got to prove that, he's got the lowest passer rating,

10 of any quarterback starting in the league, throwing the ball down the field 20 plus yards. So he's not a playmaker. He's just parking the Mercedes. He's not wrecking it. This is a very good old line. He's got a lot of time, but he's doing nothing special. What grade would you give Zach Wilson so far with the Jets?

I think a D. I think he's careless. He's got eight turnovers. He's sloppy. He's got the lowest completion percentage, 56% lowest passer rating among all starting quarterbacks. He's showing off. Take care of the football. These are four and five billion dollar franchises. You see that with Justin Herbert. He understands the value of the football. This is not the Mountain West Conference. Take care of the football. Jets are averaging 11 points. Some of this is institutional mayhem. But what I don't like is, he has, there's an arrogance to his style, which is he just doesn't take care of the ball. I saw this with Drew Locke. He's too casual. This is not BYU. This is not the Mountain West. You give up a turnover of a game. You're going to lose the game 65% of the time. Stop throwing picks. What gray would you give Carson Wentz in his first year? I would give him a C to a C plus. I thought he played well against the Dolphins. He had 115 passer rating. Now, he's been hit 35 times this year. That's the most. So this is a high C. I still think he's reckless. he's missed some open throws. He's never been the most accurate thrower, but he played very well,

and a lot of this is trying to overcome a shockingly bad, surprisingly bad O line. So it's a solid, a good strong C to C plus. How about Trevor Lawrence? I would give him a B because of what he's overcome. The urban distraction, he lost his top receiver, DJ Chark. It's a bad roster. You know, and he had to split snaps in the preseason with Gardner Minshu. He's, Completion percentage is low, 57%, not egregious for a rookie, but he's got nine giveaways. That's way too many. The difference is the Jets have more talent in the Jaguars, and I mean, they've got at least an NFL coach right now. There's so many experimental things going on with Jacksonville.

So his turnovers are high, but I see a ton of talent, and I see a kid that's responsible. He doesn't want to turn it over, but they are asking him to basically now, they have one running back in him, to win games. So you're going to throw, I'm going to bake that in. They have no other shot besides him. Justin Fields was his grade. I thought he played better last week. I'm going to give him a C to a C minus. Now, again, there's things he's struggling. He's been sacked 12 times more than any quarterback, and that's brutal. And his passer rating is really low, 54. But I thought last week, some of the lights went on. Now, it's not a great defense in Detroit, but he had his, he completed mid-60s. He seemed much more under control.

there's stuff to like here. I do think I'm going to give you a better grade as a rookie if you have suddenly, like Mack Jones, had a really good game against Tampa. He gets a C, despite a low ceiling. I thought Justin had a very good game against Detroit. It's a very solid C. He has a propensity to be a playmaker,

and he's going to have to do that because you cannot read defenses as a rookie quarterback. It ain't going to happen. I don't care. care if you went to Stanford. You're going to make bad throws as a rookie. So his playmaking ability is really necessary with that lousy barrel line. What great would you give Jared Gough? D. The turnover problems remain an issue. And by the way, the Lions do have a nice running back to D. Andre Swift and a pretty solid offensive line. Under pressure this year, his quarterback rating is

26. And this has been the knock on Gough. That unless it's a perfect pocket, he struggles. Well, we're seeing it again this year. No touchdowns. Two interstations. in a muddy pocket. And this is going to continue to haunt him. You've got to be able to throw under pressure in this league because you're virtually always under pressure. Dak Prescott, by the way, has become pretty accurate passer under pressure. That was, you know, early in his career.

He wasn't as adept at it. But he is very good now. How about Sam Darnold? B, I will say this. He's been productive. Even against the Cowboys. He had four touchdowns, two rushing, two passing. 300 yards in three straight games.

No Carolina quarterback's done that. What Sam is, is a playmaker, and you've got to be comfortable with that. Sam is productive. And Teddy Bridgewater was probably more responsible for the football, but he wasn't a playmaker. So they went out and got Donald knowing he can run for touchdowns. So the Cowboys, a great example. He didn't win the game. He's wildly productive.

One of the interceptions was just a great play by Trayvon Diggs. So I'd give him a B, B minus. Matthew Stafford. Now I'd give him a B because he has great protection. He's not getting hit at all. So, I mean, the guy, he's faced the fewest pressure is 20 and taking the fewest hits 15 by any quarterback in the league. So it would be easy to give him an A, but unlike Trevor Lawrence,

Trevor Lawrence is under pressure. Matt's got a very, very comfortable pocket. A lot of time to throw. Excellent weapons. Van Jefferson, Cooper Cup. They're lightly used Robert Woods. They have a very nice tight end. So my grade here is I expect more from you considering I know your potential.
