Welcome back. T.J. Hushmanzada, Fox Sports, played for 11 years, pro bowler. By the way, had John Harbaugh as one of his coaches, Dan Quinn. Let's talk about John Harbaugh. I was saying two days ago, I said, if I think of Pete Carroll or Sean McDermott or Ron Rivera or Mike Tomlin, those are pure defensive coaches. But Harbaugh's hard to pigeonhole. He started with running backs and the tight ends. Then he went special teams. He's a culture creator. I don't look at a. him as a defensive coach. I don't even look at Jim Harbaugh as an offensive coach because his teams don't throw the ball

down the field. They didn't really they didn't in Michigan. I just think those guys it's a power of personality. So you were briefly with John Harbaugh. Give me your interpretation of what separated him. I like John Harbaugh a lot. We

text this week. We stay in contact just because of the season that I played for him, we just got along very well and we've just stayed in contact you're an adult you're a professional and it's crazy because who's the best coaches in the league and everybody names three four or five guys you never mentioned john he's by far in away one of the best coaches in the league if not the best is he as good at coaches you've ever had yes yes and i i tell everybody this and i was only there one

year it's the way he treats you whether he listens to your input or not he makes you feel like your voice matters. And he's a player's coach, but it's not easy. And so it's no secret or why are the Ravens always good? They've been good since he's, whether they've won a Super Bowl and they have an opportunity to win another one. But they are just always good under his watch. He just does a great job on both sides of the ball.

And unlike true defensive coaches, he's got an absolute feel for offense. Part of it is probably so many discussions with his brother, right? I mean, it does help when your brother is the other side of the ball. And the other thing is he took Flacco, big arm, not a mover, pocket. And then he took Lamar the opposite. And he has embraced both and one big with both. I think part of what makes him successful is that his brother's an offensive coach, and they've leaned on each other for coaching hires.

This is where they come. Their father was a coach. this is in his DNA. Since he could walk and talk, it's been football. But probably more than anything, he lets his coach's coach. He does. There's a lot of coaches. They want to meddle on.

If I'm a defensive coach, oh, 13 seconds left in the game. We have a chance to advance in the playoffs. Let me take over this defensive play call in here for these last 13 seconds. Oh, I blew it. Sorry. That's what happens. Offensive coach. Let's run this play instead.

He lets his coach's coach. coach, he empowers him. And so the coaches don't want to let him down knowing how he is but just my experience I told him this and I tell everybody that's one of the best coaches in the league. I played one year there

and I feel like I played a ton of years there for the Ravens because of the guys that I played with and specifically Harbaugh being a coach, I still communicate with him to this day and it's been over a decade. Now, I saw a story years ago. It may have been on HBO where it was about John

and Jim. Jim runs a little hotter than John. John feels like, you know, there's always like an alpha or the brothers. John's competitive. Jim's like different. And I think it would be easier to play with John than Jim, but I also think Jim's amazing. If the Chargers didn't hire Jim Harbaugh, and they were in big discussions last night, I was told, would it be a massive mistake? I mean, how do you view that transaction potentially? Would it be a mistake? It would be disappointing because you seem to have the team that's ready to go now. You have to hire in a coach that can possibly compete and beat Andy Reed.

Like that's your goal. Everybody in that division is chasing the Chiefs. And so you feel if Harbaugh is my coach, I'm not at a coaching deficit when we match up with the Chiefs. That's right. We have a chance from that perspective. Our quarterback may not be Mahomes, but he's on par.

It's close, very close. And so it would be a disappointment if the Chargers didn't come to an agreement with Harbaugh. I'd be shocked if we don't hear something here by the end of the day. Have you talked to players who have played under Jim? Oh, yeah. So when I left the Ravens, the following year was a lockout. And so John called Jim, and I should have signed with the Niners.

That's the year they went to the Super Bowl. I signed with the Raiders because of Hugh Jackson. And so I don't know Jim very well, but my interaction, I don't mind a coach that can go hot. I want to win. Like go hot. If it's going to make us win games, hot as you want, burn me. But I want to win, and I want a coach that's going to push me to be my best

and reach my potential. And so I don't mind that at all. You look at what he's done everywhere he's been. And every we all know, San Diego, Stanford. We all know that. The 49ers, he's a winner, and players want to win. So you can be hot. As long as we win, I'll put up with whatever.

You know, I bring you on, and it's too early for this, but I am thinking about this. It is, many believe, the best quarterback draft class in college in a long time. So how many of these, Drake May, Caleb Williams, Bo Nix, Michael Penix, Jaden Daniels. How many will you work with? How many do you know currently? You have a history of being very accurate on the show. I personally won't work with any of them, but I'll be out there.

And I communicate with them. You know, we'll throw. And so J. Daniels will be out there. Pennix will be out there. McCarthy will be out there. Okay, J.J. McCarthy, who you like, and I don't know. I can't, I don't see it. But McCarthy was out here this past summer.

I actually was impressed. I was like, wow, he's bigger than I thought. Really good arm. Pretty athletic. But we'll really get on the field here starting next week. And I'll form my opinion. Some may not like it. You're the one that told us you're making a big mistake.

If you don't draft Justin Herbert, you told us. I thought Herbert was just his arm. But it's more that goes into it. And we'll be able to see if guys can layer the ball. Is Caleb, in your opinion, a lock? one. You have to draft Caleb. But there's a lot of noise. You have to drafting number one because if you don't and Caleb Williams is that dude, you're fired. You're losing your job. It's like the LeBron Mello thing. You had to draft, you had to draft Andrew Luck, you had to draft Elway,

you had to draft LeBron over Mello, you have to draft him number one. It's job preservation. Even if you think, there's a dad issue. You have to draft him because if he turns out to be what everybody believes he will be. You're going to lose your job. So they're going to draft them. Whether it works out or not. Very rare do you see a head coach get to draft two quarterbacks in the first round and like the Bears are with Iber Flues and Justin Fields and now possibly Caleb Williams

and survive not making Justin Fields be what many expected. But yeah, you have to draft Caleb Williams. But there's a lot of noise and I like him. There's a lot of dad noise. There's a lot of is he putting in the time noise? I'm just telling you what I'm hearing. I don't know. We all want to win.

We all want to play well. I don't know if the commitment's there. I don't know him like that, but we'll find out. That football field is a truth machine. I don't care what you did in college. When you get to the National Football League, it's completely different.

Okay, for the record, let's talk Jordan Love last weekend, because Jordan was at Utah State. You may or may not have seen him. Are you surprised how, how good he got over eight weeks. No. So, little story, quick story.

No, no, no quick story. When he comes out, long, slow stories. When he's coming out of college, I remember texting Marcellus Wiley. George Love should probably go on the top ten. He's really good. And Marcellus reminded me of that text message this year. You still think that? I'm like, yeah.

And so what I saw then is what I thought he would be, a really good thing. quarterback. He didn't play in the, this season it didn't start off well. No. And then he just turned it on. You got to give Jordan Love a ton of credit. But more than that, you got to give LaFleur a ton of credit for this

development because many were saying Aaron Rogers is the reason LaFleur is a great head coach. And now you have Jordan Love play this way. They're all young. Have you noticed, I talked about this yesterday. So people always think anytime I bring up Aaron, I'm being critical. It's all data.

So Aaron's last year with LaFleur, he was middle of the pack, 27th and first half turnovers. So the first half, as you know, is the scripted half. The second half is like, you got to make plays, Lamar. You can only script so much of this game. It's like this show. First hour, we kind of know where we're going. After that, you just hope stories break.

Yeah. So in a football game, first two, Series O was kind of scripted. First half, first half, D'Amico Ryan sort of keeps the game on the fairway. Second half, Lamar takes it out and does what he wants with it, right?

So you can only coach so much. If you look at first quarter numbers for Jordan Love this year and Aaron last year, that's the secret sauce. They were the best first quarter team. No turnovers. Plus 47 since week nine.

And this goes back to Aaron. didn't always take the play. Jordan is a playmaker, but was willing to stay on script in the first half. Sometimes he's erratic. He's a little gunslinger, but it was interesting when I watched Jordan Love.

The part of this story that's fascinating is how much better he was as a first quarter and first half player than Aaron was. Now, Aaron's probably better in second halfs because Aaron's got that index card of a million, snaps. But my thing with, when you get great athletes, Lamar, Jordan Love, Alan, some of those guys aren't all coachable. Jordan Love is clearly willing to be coached. His first quarter numbers are insane. That's Lefleur. To your point, that's LaFleur. That's script. That's coaching. And sitting and playing behind Aaron Rogers helps a ton. That that helps. You should be able to learn from that.

you can see in how he throws the ball at times little Aaron Rodgerish you pick up some things when you play with great players you'd be a fool not to you can learn from the best players in the world you can learn from the worst players in the world

tell me who you stole from everybody that I played against and with everybody when the season would end I would get a DVD we had DVDs back then right so I told a video guys make me a DVD and I would just all the receivers all their catches

and I would just watch it in the offseason In practice, a guy can get cut. If he does something that I like, I'm going to try it. And if I can do it, I'm going to put it in my game. If not, I'm going to trash it. The best, you have to learn from everybody. You can learn from the good and the bad. It doesn't matter who it is.

If you're not learning and you're not getting better, you're getting worse. And so he learned from Aaron Rogers, but what Jordan Love is done, the Packers are going to be a problem moving forward because they have a young group of skilled players. I'm not paying any of them for three years. And they're all really good. They're all really good. And so, yeah, LaFleur, he earned his paycheck this year for sure. And is both Green Bay and Detroit, great O line play? Will Debo play? If he plays, I like the Niners. If he doesn't, I think he can go either way. Interesting. Former player with a very interesting perspective. I've totally

Amin-Raw St. Brown is quietly one of the best receivers in the league, and nobody talks about it. It's incredible. Nobody talks about how good Amaral is. Here's what's crazy about Penae Seul, one of the best tackles. Sam Leporto, one of the best tight ends. Amar on St. Bound, one of the best receivers. Jemir Gibbs, the top five running back minimum.

All young guys. I mean, they're not just good young players. They are top of the league players. Yeah. Like, they have not just had success in the draft. Last two, three years, they've hit six elite-like top three player in the league at their position. They have hit home runs. And by the way, tackle, receiver, Aiden Hutchison.

Yeah, we're just talking offense, right? right now right atch by the way is a beast brian branch ain't hutchson yes they've done very well with the draft and the development of their players this is going to be a great game yeah tj hushmanzada good seen you buddy thank you always likewise always keep digging on all that caleb stuff i got you need your intel j mac with the news turn on the news this is the herd line news i can't believe you didn't ask him brock purdy or jared gough like that's the question of our time. He got mad at me earlier today

because I said I love Goff and he started naming quarterbacks and I just kept saying I take Goff over golf over and I'm not taking him over Lamar. But I think I think Goff is, what's funny about Detroit is nobody loves Amoran St. Brown

nobody gets how great Gibbs is yet. He's not good. He's like Breeze Hall, but stronger and quicker. Like people don't understand. I like Jared Goff. I'm biased because I have a relationship with golf, but I also think Purdy.

I don't know why people don't believe in Brock Prattie. I don't understand it. Because he's done very well. And it's a system. It's a system. It's a system. Everybody else wasn't doing this in this system. They're playing well, but not like Purdy is. You've got to get Brock Purdy as credit. He's done very well. Didn't play well, but played well when it matters.

One of my favorite game managers in the league. Hey, if I can win that many games, I'll be a game manager. A game manager when you play with him, T. What the heck is a game manager? What does that even mean? I guess a guy that doesn't turn the ball over. You do what it takes to win. Which is every quarterback in the league. It should.

I mean, Patrick Bow. Oh, my gosh. Anyways, all right, let's go to Justin Fields. He's still a member of the Bears, despite a lot of rumors that Caleb Williams is coming on board with the first pick. Chicago just added O.C. Shane Waldron. But according to Albert Breer, Matt Iberflus made a passionate plea to keep Fields in his pitch to prospective offensive coordinators defending his current QB, this is insanity to me, but I guess you kind of have to do that.

He's going to badmouth him to people? Well, I'm just, I guess you have to kind of do that and say, okay, yeah, yeah, with Fields, blah, blah, how would you operate? Well, he wants the word out there that he's good, because eventually if they move him, you want to get stuff back. And Fields, by the way, has moments. He's an incredible playmaker. I mean, the difference between him and Jordan Love is

Jordan Love's a more accurate throw of the football, But they both have some of these abilities. Both have great size. They move well. They got a whip. There's a lot of similar. The difference is Jordan is just more consistently accurate. Do you remember when Lamar Jackson was going through his issues with the contract with the Ravens?

One of the big sticking points was he did not have an agent. We're getting close to the process here where Pennix and Jane Daniels and Drake May and Caleb are all going to pick an agent. Do you know Caleb Williams does not have an agent? I don't love that. And I, you know, I, TJ's right. You draft Caleb Williams to protect self-preservation. If you're a general manager, just take him. But I'm, there's some stuff out there that I don't love hearing.

Like I've been told dad doesn't want him to have an agent. Get an agent. Just get an agent. Now, again, Lamar didn't and it worked. It's possible. But, you know, if you're as good as Caleb, because remember, there were questions about Lamar. There's no questions about Caleb. So just tell an agent.

I'll give you one or two percent. you'll dictate the terms on that. This process is going to be interesting. I mean, I would agree with you. Caleb is the slam dunk number one pick. But when you start to talk about all the stuff you hear and with the bear, I don't know what the bears are dealing with when they start talking to this guy.

Like, we'll see. I don't think Fields is going to stay there, right? We would both agree he's gone. We agree. They'll move him. Next up are the Chief's sixth straight AFC championship game after the win over the bills. one of the more notable things from the game was Jason Kelsey's shirtless antics

I was like Kylie when I met you the first day I met you I was born blacked out drunk. It's all the sleep of the bar. This is part of the charm. This is part of the Jason Kelsey charm. Oh, man. Well, Tay says she absolutely love you. I like those guys.

Did he retire officially, right? It's official. He told him he's done. I think he backed off it. Yeah. I think he backed off it. I mean, maybe he will. I don't know, but I don't think it's official. I don't know.

What if you were going to meet Taylor Swift and the wife was like, hey, keep your shirt on? Would she have to say that? Yeah, I tend to disappear. I don't want to be. Yeah, I would be very professional And I'm so socially awkward That I would hide

I would just hide Yeah And if she came over and said I love your show Which of course she would And then I would engage I'm not somebody that wants to Like I remember I'm not going to give

Away the name I remember being with somebody in my life Who made a big deal out of a celebrity And I was totally humiliated I just I don't want to be in I don't like that stuff Who was the person? I'm not going to get into it

The person was a female star, a comedian that was a huge hit on TV, and she didn't want to be. It was at a lounge. It was a long time ago, and the star is still alive, but not as big. But it was, I was embarrassed. I don't like that stuff. I like hide from. I would not hide from Taylor Swift. I'd be like, hey, T. Swift, what is up?

You know, I got a good, strong opening game. You would say that. Something along those lines. Something along the lines of, you know, T. Swift, what is up? Yeah. Oh my God. I'm keeping it real, baby.

Come on. You probably use that, too. Are you going to be like, hello, I'm Colin Coward. Nice to meet you. I have a television show and you see me on board. I wouldn't. No, I would just say, it's a pleasure to meet you. I don't want to bother you.

You do grow. You know what I'd say? Love your work. And I'd leave. But do you like, what's my favorite song? I don't. What's my song that you like the most? What do you mean?

What does Taylor Swift said that to you? You said, I love your work. And she goes, which song? I'd have to ask my daughter. Oh, so you don't love my work. You got to be prepared, coward. You never know. But Taylor Swift is going to step into your life.

What song do you like them? I don't think. When guys come up to me and are like, Jay, big fan, I'm like, oh, what takes? And they can rattle them off. I never once had a guy say that. Really? Come up and say, I like your takes. Nobody's ever said that to me.

33 years, nobody's ever said it. I'm a little more of a man of the people. You are, you know, less of that. All right, let's wrap up with USA basketball, which announced the 41 player pool of the U.S. men's national basketball team. The pool was selected by Grant Hill and could change, but LeBron, Curry, KD, and Embed are on here.

KD. is on the team? Good, good. Just a list of potential guys. Is Draymond on the team? Heck no. Come on, get it. No way. So who else is on the team?

Curry, Durant, Booker, Jalen Brown. This is just the pool. Okay, well, okay, here it is. Let's tell our radio. Jimmy Butler, Aunt, M.B., Deeran Fox, Halliburton, good for him. Twelve of these guys will make it. Kyrie. I don't see Trey Young making the team.

And Jalen Brunson made it. Well, again, it's the player pool. Oh, so who's going to defend? Why not Draymond Green? It's not on the team. Stop it. You don't need Draymond Green creating an international incident. In Paris.

You don't need that. Come on. Like literally an international incident. You got, who's making the stops here? Oh, I don't know. Where's Austin Reeves? How come he's? He played great defense last night, by the way.

Austin Reeves on the Olympic team. He's already been on the Olympic team, I believe. But this is like the Paris Olympics, like the big one. Everybody wants to be there. I don't think Kyrie makes a cut. He don't play no defense. If you took that list right now, that list, who would you start for Team USA? Give me that list.

I would start Tatum. Okay, Tom. Okay, Taitam. I probably start Hymie Butler. Joel Embed, Steph Curry. And you've got to start LeBron. You can't have LeBron coming off the bench. Yeah, that's kind of a big lineup.

First guy off the bench, Paul George or Tyree Calibor. Oh, you got to start Kawhi Leonard. I'm sorry. The claw, come on. I'm not starting Kauai Leonard. He's an incredible defender. He's probably your best two-way player on the team. This is going to be difficult because you have to start LeBron.

You don't bring LeBron and Curry to the Olympics and have to come off the bench. I mean, think about how, what do you do with Durant and Booker? I mean, first of all. This is an embarrassment of Richard. I mean, look how much talent. Now, some of it's old. A lot of our best players are old. We should do our picks, our 12 guys who we have making the team.

I think we'll have some differences. Because, like Dame Lillard, he was terrible at the last Olympics. I don't think he fits. I like Brunson. This is going to be fun. Halliburton's got to make it. Halliburton's nasty. J. Mack with the news.

Mack, you throw the team out, and for various reasons, I'll try to match the perfect NFL coaching candidate.

We've got a lot of good candidates and a lot of openings. Here we go. All right. So we'll start with the tough one. The Carolina Panthers, who you imagine with them? Brian Flores. He has a physical and emotional temperament that TEPA can't run over him. They're not close offensively to competing, nor was Miami when he took him over.

But from special teams to discipline to defense, he turned that dolphin team around in eight weeks. He won't be pushed around. They've tried the offensive thing with Matt Rule, Frank. right. Tepper's got no patience for it. This is a guy, by the way, Flores and Tepper, previously both part of the Steelers organization. That feels

like the fit. That's not bad. I like it. But didn't he sue the league? He had a big big issue. He's in the league right now. I know, but head coach, defensive guy. All right. What about the Seahawks who matches with Seattle? I think it's Bobby Sloick. That's who I would hire.

Young offensive, analytical head coach, the opposite of Pete Carroll. He's doing amazing things with C.J. Stroud. By the way, the Texans offense had the number eight passing offense and the fewest giveaways. So he runs a very smart, clean, efficient offense. And Seattle does not have a great quarterback right now, so that's what they need. I don't know why he is not being considered. You've done the defensive coach.

I would go the other way. I think they're offensive weapons. Their tackles. Noah Fant, Will Disley, three receivers. They have got really elite offensive. personnel and they have underachieved the last several years. All right, let's match with the commanders, which head coach

matches with them? I would go with Vrable here. I think this is the second best job opening. He's a culture creator. Their defense last year, despite having a defensive coach was awful. And they've got offensive weapons, which he never felt like he had enough in Tennessee. You've got Brian Robinson,

Terry McLaurin, Dotson, the other running back, or wide receiver. So they've got offensive pieces. He'll make defense better immediately. Sam Hal is workable, but you won't need him because you've got a top three pick. So if he gets the quarterback right and he's never really been with a team where he gets the quarterback right, I think that works. This is a second best job opening out. I like this. A lot of people say Ben Johnson's, but Washington needs a culture change and he's a culture guy.

Yes. No, I mean, Ben Johnson calls plays. Lincoln Riley calls plays. Is Lincoln a culture guy? There's real debate. Vrable and Harbaugh change your culture. That's what the Chargers in Washington need. It's been a losing, underachieving, icky culture. All right, which head coach matches with the charges. I think the Harbaugh makes a lot of sense. Listen, they're getting lost in Los Angeles.

You've got star coaches. The Dodgers, the Lakers. You've got stars everywhere. McVeigh, Stafford, Aaron Donald, Pooka Nakua now. You've got to wake the room up. You're getting lost in this city. and he did, by the way, played his last two years with the Chargers.

There's little history there. I remember, yeah, yeah. I do not, but that's what it says here on the script. All right, let's wrap up with the Atlanta Falcons, and I'll remind people that Belichick's still on the board, Ben Johnson's still on the board. I would say Ben Johnson. So Arthur Blank has never hired a coach with head coaching experience.

He tends to like coordinators. Also, he's a young coach with a bunch of very, young offensive pieces. So I think generationally he fits. I also think, I don't think their culture's bad. I think Blank's a good owner. Rich McKay runs the operations. I like their town.

I don't feel like this is Washington or the Chargers where, like, you've got to fix the culture. You just got to fix the quarterback and the coach. I never think Atlanta's poorly run. You just can't win in this league with Desmond Ritter as your guy. So this to me isn't a big major culture shift. Get the right coach, all those young players. Atlanta's got surprisingly, if I say this out loud, people wouldn't believe it.

Atlanta has much better offensive personnel than the Cowboys. Two starbacks. Tide end star, young star receiver. And by the way, third best O line, according to PFF. Atlanta's offensive pieces are wildly underappreciated. They just got to get quarterback. I mean, it's tough to say CD Lam's the top five

receiver in the league. Okay, time out. Pauler's a free agent. Atlanta's got two backs better than anything Dallas has. You could plug in a running back any. You could plug in anybody. Who's their second receiver, Dallas? Cooks?

Oh, give me a break. Well, I mean, Kyle Pitts has been a disappointment. You have to admit, for where he was drafted, he is not to live. The Falcons are the rare team. They haven't had a winning season for like five, six years. The Falcons are the rare team.

where they're not winning, but it's not a gross culture. Like Carolina right now is a mess. The chargers are chargering. Washington's icky. There's some Raiders have to get their culture right. So what happens is it just needs a quarterback. Are they just irrelevant? Kind of irrelevant.

So, I mean, to me, just get the coach and the quarterback right. I think you could win next year. In that division, you could absolutely win next year. That division has a history of last finishes first. So as a matchmaker, does this mean when no Belichick, you think he should just ride off into the sunset? If Belichick wants personnel say, not interested at all, not interested. Again, it's, I got the last five years, last six drafts as proof. I got the free agent year when he spent all that money and got one good player.

He just last year, you and I looked and could not believe. Do you know he drafted a kicker, like two rounds before Pooka and Nakua? 65 spots before Puka Nakua. Kind of an indictment. I know a lot of people passed on Puka. I get it, but go ahead. You could call up, what is it? There's some NFL stats page and look at the Patriots draft history.

I mean, find the all pros that he's drafted. Like, find any hits that he's had. Belichick in the last like eight years. Any hits. Any. Mac Jones is actually for a year a hit. It's one of the better ones. Yeah, it's not like he's like two for six one year and then three for seven.

No, it's just. It's like one for nine, O for seven. like it's really bad. Yeah. He had a Pro Bowl punter. That was a hit. So it's like if he wants personnel, say, I'm like, I'm out. I'm just not, I'm not.

Is anyone desperate enough to just say, okay, fine. Oh, yeah, yeah, Carolina, yeah. And there's always somebody desperate enough. Listen, it's the NFL, a lot of big business. People want to win. Jobs on the line. All right. T.J. Hushman's ought to stop by.
