I kind of like that Bailey Zappy play. Drew Bledso, 15 years in the league, multiple-time Pro Bowl, Super Bowl champ. So I want to get it to the, I would talk to Joe Burrell about this yesterday in a podcast and the Tua stuff about you weren't a guy that ran around a lot.

But you, you know, let's face it, you play in the league long enough, 15, 14, 15 years, you get whacked. When you watch Tua, you probably didn't have a Tua moment, but take me to your career. Did you just identify very early, Drew, is you're going to get your bell wrong a few times a year? Yeah, I mean, for me, it was usually about once a year, and I had an interesting deal where I would lose the peripheral vision out of one side of my head, which was an interesting way to play the game. But, you know, yeah, you do, you do get whacked. And for me, you know, the bad ones were usually when I hit my head on the turf. but I don't think I ever looked like Tua did when he tried to walk out the field and stumbled and fell.

That just looked really bad. And then the following week, man, that was super scary for anybody that's watching that game. So, you know, I just, I hope that there are no long-term effects for him. I do think the league's gotten safer. You can't, there's no hitting at OTAs. Basically, once the season starts, there's no hitting. Helmets are better.

No head shots. Go back to your first. year in the NFL until your last, did you feel that it was a safer league in that 15 year period? You know, they hadn't really

started to make the big changes at the time that I retired. You know, they could still hit quarterbacks as hard as they wanted to, you know, for, you know, at the time that I retired, that all kind of happened after I was after I was done. But I do like what they're doing. I like, I think the emphasis

on player safety is important for the health of the league and for the future of the league. I mean, let's be honest. You know, if you've got guys that are dying on the field, you're not going to, the football is not going to survive. So they've done a lot of really good things, but it's still something that needs to be in the forefront. And this situation with Tua is just a great example of how they've got to make sure

that player safety is at the very, very highest level of priority for all the teams. Okay, so when you came into the league, you were a number one pick. Kenny Pickett's a first round pick, but, you know, I talked to a couple of different executives who saw him more as a second round guy. You were different in that. But you both were multiple year starters in college. So you had a lot of reps. Take me to your first game action in the NFL.

So Kenny Pickett did a couple things I like. He sat in that pocket and got whacked a couple times. But what's realistic on, okay, even though you started a lot in college, oh, the lights going on in the NFL. What's realistic? You know, year two was way different than year one. I mean, that was a quantum leap change from the first game of the first year to the first game of the second year in terms of how comfortable I felt with the speed and the complexity of everything. But then it's probably like year, I don't know, year three or four where you really start to feel like you have things figured out.

And then that progression continues. But the jump, the biggest jump for me at least was from year one in the NFL to year two in the NFL at terms of how comfortable I felt. with everything that you had to do to be successful. Russell Wilson, you watched him for a decade in Seattle. He was always pretty good on play action. He's not getting those opportunities in Denver because they can't run it. The argument is he's washed, Seattle saw it, they moved off. Do you think he's washed?

Where do you think he's at? No, I don't think he's washed. But I do think that there is, you know, the way that Russ plays, So many of his big plays and his good plays are off script, right? It's not just, you know, five-step drop and, you know, Tom Brady down the field. He scrambles around and runs around. And there's a learning curve that goes with that. Your receivers and everybody that's playing with you have to learn how to move when Russ moves

so that, you know, he can make those off-script dynamic plays that have allowed him to be so successful for so long. That and then you combine that with, you know, if they can get the running game going, The quarterback's best friend is a good play action game. So hopefully they can get that going for them too. So I saw Cam and Big Ben run early and watch their careers deteriorate quickly. Buffalo has no run game consistently outside of Josh Allen. Now, you and him have something in common. You grow up out west.

You're both 6'6. You're both bigger than some of the defenders. And I think early in your career, Ben, Cam, Josh Allen, and maybe Drew Bled, so that you know you'll you'll run into a corner and not think much of it but then all of a sudden there's a time for you that you know a london fletcher whoever somebody wax and you're like all right i'm done running take me to the time in your career that you made a decision i don't want to feel like that again well i mean that was my game anyway man i didn't want that ball on my hands any longer than i had to call it i don't want to but uh uh the one big mistake i did make though i think of my rookie year

I threw a pass, it got batted up against the Steelers, and as the ball got batted up, I decided I would catch it and run with the ball. Well, I got hit by Kevin Green and Greg Lloyd from both sides at the same time. And from then on, I decided that was batting that thing down. But, you know, I do, first of all, I love watching Josh Allen play. I love everything that he's doing.

But, you know, anybody that's a Bills fan has to be concerned about the wear and tear that he's putting on his body, not just for this season, but for longevity. And so from that standpoint, I really do hope they, especially as the weather gets colder, I hope that for his sake, they do establish to run a little bit better and take some of those hits off of him. He has to have, you probably have the stat in front of it.

He has to have the highest percentage of their offense on his shoulders of any player in the league. And, you know, if they're going to continue to do that, it's dynamic, it's fun to watch. I'm a huge fan. But, man, if you're a Bill's fan, you have to be concerned about whether or not he's going to be able to last an entire season.

So you know this and I know this. The league because of safety and rules is pivoting to offense. Many of the worst offenses are teams with defensive coaches, Chicago, New England, Washington. That doesn't mean they're not capable people, but sometimes culturally the world, you know, if you're 58 years old, 60 years old and the world becomes techie, the world's moving away from you, right? To your grandkids and away from you. So I look at some of these quarterbacks like in New England right now. Defensive coach, defensive coordinator Colin plays. Take me to your career.

I believe most offensive coaches at some point like Minnesota, they played quarterback. Or they were on the offensive side of the ball. Go back to your high school college pro career. Did you feel, and it may have been subtle, Drew, more comfort often with an offensive coach. You didn't have a ton of them, did you? No, I didn't have an offensive head coach in the NFL. I had Parcells, then I had Pete Carroll, and then I had Belichick. So I never got the privilege of playing for, you know, an Andy Reid who is famous for his punt, pass, and kick exploits back when he was bigger than everybody in the sixth grade or whatever the heck it was. But I do think there's

some truth to that. I've always felt like, you know, if you're coaching a quarterback for sure, and to me, if you're calling plays, it's very helpful if you played the position at least at some level, be that high school or college, doesn't necessarily have to be the professional level. But it's different. If you understand what it looks like

from a quarterback's perspective, then when you only have that perspective looking down from the booth or watching it on film, it's a very different thing, understanding what that guy's seeing and what he's feeling. So I do think that that's a complicated thing. Now, that being said,

I would never count the page, out. They've always been famous or notorious, depending on how you view the Patriots, for getting better throughout the course of the season. Yes. And I think that story is yet to be written as you watch them progress through the course of the rest of this season. Now you get to the end of the season and they're still being unproductive, then I think you've got to take a hard look at it. But I don't think that story is quite written yet. I'm like, I'm not an outdoorsy kind of guy. You're not. Give me a beach or a city. There is nothing better. I'm telling you right now. No, I'm not going to talk about it because then people will book flights and I'll never get there again. It's one of the great. Did you invest in real estate there yet or no?

No, no. I just didn't. I wouldn't get there enough. It's great. The two gems out west. No, I'm not going to talk about it. Los Angeles. No, no, no. There's two smaller town mountain communities in the west that aren't like bougie, like Aspen or Vale. Yeah. And I'm going to retire in one. Are you the kind of guy who chops his own wood out there when you're an outdoorsman? Do I look like the type of guy that chops is on? No, but you're such an outdoorsman. I'm stunned at this development. I'm not an outdoorsman. I like to ski and jog. Okay, fair enough. I'll pass on those two events. First up, Baker Mayfield has not given the Panthers the boost they were hoping for. One and three, tough matchup against a Niners this Sunday, big underdogs. Baker's taking the blame. Way to step up, Baker, for how the team has played so far. I like that. I've said before, you know, I pride myself on being a guy that elevates the guys around them and being able to lead at an extremely high level.

And obviously, that has not happened yet. So I'm working really hard on that and, you know, starts with me just doing my job the very best I can and then going from there. So, yeah, I'll take a lot of blame for that and I consistently will. I think you mentioned it. I've been here before. I'm pretty comfortable in this position. So I have experience being able to bounce back, being able to handle things the right way and to lead. So for me.

How about that? Eat better as an underdog. Well, I think all of us are better humble, right? I like him when he's a little more subtle, nuanced, and humble. I don't think Baker knows those things. You don't think he knows? Well, not at all, dude. He's pretty straight up with you, right?

He's going to tell you what it is, whether he's going to be defensive about it or not. Well, you can, I just think going to a microphone in the NFL, when you're a struggling quarterback in Cleveland and Carolina and being, have shown a lot of hoodspa is a turnoff. Brady wins and he's humble. Eli won and was humble. Peyton won and he was humble. And they were winning. Unless you're posting big Ws, you want to fall on the sword a lot in this league

if you're the franchise quarterback. I don't think that's in his DNA. All right, next up, speaking of humble, Tom Brady, the buck's only one of the surprise two and two teams in the league. Tom Brady was asked Colin today about parody in the league. Maybe he was watching our show. We talked about parody earlier.

So many teams are sitting at 500. He doesn't actually. think parity is the reason for it. I think there's a lot of bad football from what I watch. I watch a lot of bad football, a lot of, yeah, poor quality of football. That's what I see. Backwards hat, gaunt, face. I'm not going to, he's going through it, dude.

I will say it, first of all, he looks like he's lost 20 pounds since Labor Day. Stress. Well, of course, he's going through a tough time. I mean, it's, he is, whenever I go through stress, I can't eat. like he is Tom looks thin like noticeably thin dangerously so well no but it's just I feel bad for him he's going through

like it's very public now it's awful it's the worst thing in the world I've gone through it it's not the worst thing in the world but it's it's bad it screws your whole life up you're not it's a dark place to be so he's saying poor quality football yes there is there's like I wrote down some teams here

almost borderline unwatchable two of them are tonight Denver and the Colts like it's extremely boring and tough watch those games. During commercials, you're changing the channel, right? Oh, yeah. I mean, if Russell Wilson was hurt and didn't play, I wouldn't watch the nice game. I just wouldn't watch it. I mean, I'm not going to watch bad

football. Houston, are they, have you watched any of them? No, no, no, I, we're supposed to, but I would say this, I watch everybody for the first four or five weeks. Yeah. And then you get to a point where I'll just move off teams, so like I'll go to the weekend and I'll have like four games, maybe five, I'm really going to watch. I'm going to watch

one in the one o'clock window. The late, there'll be two, too late window, Sunday, Monday, maybe a Thursday. But you're getting to a point now. We're about a week away from that one o'clock window has got some reasonably unwatchable games. Tennessee, Washington. Like that's not a watchable game. Right.

That's a corner TV game. Carolina, San Francisco. Oh, I'll watch every Niners game. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Pittsburgh Steelers? No, I'll watch Buffalo. Yeah, I'll watch Buffalo. Yeah, I'll watch Buffalo.

But you get into these Tennessee, Washington. I'll watch that this weekend. The loser of that game. is relegated to a corner TV. Final team, and I'm curious. Patriots Lions. No, no, no, no. Detroit's wildly entertaining.

And New England can still, with two his injury, you've got to watch New England for three more weeks. They almost beat Green Bay. Bailey Zappy, third reference on the show today. We are all in. Final story. Colts and Broncos, obviously, tonight, two teams that are really on the struggle bus.

No Jonathan Taylor, no Javante Williams. Russell Wilson's been dealing with a shoulder injury, but he's planning on playing. Foxbed has this up to Denver three and a half. You lay in lumber with Nathaniel Hackett, rookie head coaches on Thursday night football, eight and 18 against the spread. That includes last week with Daniel. I think it's close.

I think Denver wins close. I think it's super ugly. But I think if Denver loses, they go into the toast category. It is crisis time in Denver. Hackett could get fired by Thanksgiving if he loses this game. That's how bleak it could get. Remember, we saw a coach last year in the AFC get dusted, I think, right in early December. Like, it can happen, and Hackett has to get that win. Colin, one of my bets is the first half under. I just don't see any points in this one. Under 20-5.

No, this is a close game. This game's going to be 2017. I'll take Denver, 2017. I would totally take the Colts and the points. Absolutely. Absolutely. I think three and a half, you have to take the Colts. Absolutely. I think three is the first. In fact, I would say it's one of the better bets of the week. The Colts plus the points. Maddie Ice? I think it's one of the better bets of the week. You're betting a number and not a team or not a quarter. I'm not saying I like the team.

I'm just telling you the number. It's not a good week for bets this week. That's one of the top three. Tomorrow should be a good week? Let's save it for tomorrow. Friday show is always a big one. I got some good ones tomorrow. All right.

I can see him smiling as he says that. Like, I'm going to say yes. Let it ride. He said that. No, we made that up. It's from the movie The Replacements with Keanu Reeves. So two straight, incorrect. All right, this next one's fun.

Year 11, still got that new car smell. Let's ride, or we just lied? Well, he says year 11, so that it is year 11 for him. If you stole it from a movie, that'd be, you know, I'm going to say, I'm going to say one of his early press conferences in Denver, maybe his introductory press conference. I'm going to say that's let it right. He said it. He said that in July.

on Twitter. Russ, very active on social. Nicely done, cowherd. All right, next up, there may be an eye and winner, but there's also a we. Just lied or let it ride? Just lied, I don't buy it. Correct. And Seattle, remember, he did leave mostly amicably, at least publicly. So for him to say they thought I was done, that seems too punitive too serious. So I just lied.

That's not real. Russ tweeted that in March, I guess, like after the deal. Wow. And I just noticed Gino Smith kind of stole a version of that. Remember from Monday Night Football? Where they wrote me off, but I ain't right back. That's similar to that. All right.

I didn't realize that. All right, next up, there's another society which has its own laws. Football is a way of life. Now, that's a movie. Some movie just live. Correct. Varsity Blues, a classic movie. I've never seen that.

Oh, my gosh, your daughter's going to be embarrassed. That's a classic movie. Is it? Great football movie. James Vanderbeek? James Vanderbeek. Yeah, Dawson Leary? Come on, Dawson's Creed.

Let's move on. I mean, listen, the football movies I've seen, North Dallas 40, like 30 years ago or 40. years ago. The other one that had Al Pacino and John McGinley, I swear it was in it. Jamie Fox? Yeah, what was that movie? Al Pacino and Jamie, any given Sunday.

What's another? I watched about a half hour of draft. I love Kevin Costner, but I didn't like draft day. I like the draft too much. It didn't feel real to me. Like, I'm such a draft nerd. It didn't feel real. Most football movies have been hot garbage. I don't like them. What's the best football movie you've ever seen? Um, yeah, I need to give it some thought here.

a notebook. That's a big rom-com movie. And I once had a crush on Rachel McAdams. Rachel McAdams is remarkable. She's very remarkable. You don't like Rachel McCadams? Ryan Music has interesting women taste. That has nothing.

It's not a rom-com. There's nothing very funny in that movie, Jason. Is it just a romantic movie? Yeah, it's a love story. Sorry. All right, final one, Callant. If someone says you've got to do X amount, I triple it.

That is, let it right, I remember him saying that one. Boom. That's the only one I remember him saying. Yes. So he did say when I text you, it means I'm dialed in. Yeah, with just the telephone emoji. Do you ever do that? Just send an emoji and like send a message that way?

I do the one where you get this, where the young person is like, like, I don't know. Like, I don't know. What do you want me to say? I did that last night. I, first of all, love emojis. Use them all the time. I smell an emoji game in your future. No, I love emojis.

You don't use emojis? We should do an NFL teams as emojis. So it is funny, though. Did I just come up with a skit? Hold the hat down in front. Pull it down. No, look at the camera. You look like Farrell.

One of the topics we got into earlier was that Albert Breer liked, and it is interesting is that I believe right now, and it's only getting better, this is the golden age of quarterbacks. And I felt that about four years ago.

So we have the fastest quarterback ever Lamar, the biggest most athletic, arguably Josh Allen. I think he's way more athletic than Big Ben and certainly a better thrower than Cam. I think Brady, we have the goat. I think Mahomes is the most gifted. He's probably the most gifted quarterback of all time. And then I think you have a comp, there's a several young quarterbacks like Herbert, Joe Burrow. And I think Trevor Lawrence in a year will feel this way.

Really special. And I think what happens is we have these stars at the top. So, and this is a bad thing to do psychologically for anybody, kids, adults is compare. So we compare our quarterbacks to these seven or eight guys that are all time unique talent. And you're seeing more and more of this stuff, right? Aaron Rogers, by the way, probably the quickest relief of my life. So we have the fastest, quickest released, most athletic, greatest individual talent. And I'm not counting Herbert or Burrow, who I just think are really it guys.

And so because of that, it is diminished in the eyes of a lot of fans like Garapolo, Tua, and Jared Goff. And I said this earlier. You do not move off them for a college quarterback. You move off them like the Rams did for a proven commodity. I don't move off Jimmy Garapolo. This roster is stacked. And Tray Lance will get another chance.

But it's not an experimental position at quarterback with this roster because Trent Williams has about two years left to play. Kittles got about two years left. Jared Goff's a great example. If you look at Jared Goff's career numbers, and this includes like 20 games with the Lions, he's a winning quarterback, 64% completion percentage, 92 passer rating, 2.5 to 1 TD to interception ratio. You don't move off that for a college quarterback.

You keep Derek Carr, Kirk Cousins, Garapolo, Gough, and I would say Tua, although he would be the bottom one for me because of his size. You keep them until you can upgrade in league. You keep Jared Gough for seven years in Detroit, unless there's a Trevor Lawrence, which that's, you know, once every six years. Because the NFL, remember, college football only gives you one star quarterback per year. Go last 20 years. Okay, so Derek Carr and the Raiders get to the postseason with a minus 65 point differential, right? Yeah. And now they don't look like a playoff team this year.

Well, let's- So now you have the question. Okay, do we upgrade the quarterback or do we try to fix around the edges, edge rusher, cornerback, etc.? How about you fix the defense? It's been bad for seven years. Why is it on Derek Carr? By the way, Jared Goff, he ain't the problem.

Look at the defense. Lions defense. Nonsense. By the way, Niners O'Line right now. A little bit of nonsense. You know how you easily fix the defense? You get a quarterback on the rookie deal

who's making peanuts. I mean, Jared Goff's making a lot of money. So it's tough to fix the defense when you're paying golf so much. So if you get him out and you bring in Will Levis or Bryce Young, boom, you can then fix the defense easily because you're paying your quarterback, nothing. Well, you're not paying D'Andre Swift anything. You're not paying Penae-Soul anything.
