This is an I-Heart podcast.
Guaranteed Human.
Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite.
Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends.
Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman
help make you funnier.
This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel,
help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Where does your group perform?
We do some retirement homes.
Those people are starving for banter.
Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel
and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged.
It's the enhanced games.
Some call it grotesque.
Others say it's unleashing human potential.
Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year.
Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds.
I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth.
Listen to Superhuman on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
A win is a win.
A win is a win.
I don't care what I'm saying.
Yep, that's me, Clifford Taylor the 4th.
You might have seen the skits, my basketball and college football journey, or my career in sports media.
Well, now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifers Show.
This is a place for raw, unfilled conversations with athletes, creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard, but the show.
celebrated. So let's get to it. Listen to the Clifford show on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts,

favorite therapist and host, Kear Games. This space is about black men's experiences, having
honest conversations that it's really not safe to have anywhere, but you're having them
with a licensed professional who knows what he's doing. How many men carry a suit or armor?
signals to the world that you not to be played with.
And just because you have the capability that does not mean that you need to,
listen to learn the hard way on the IHard radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast.

Thanks so much. I'm Doug Gottlieb. In for Colin Cowherd, the IHeart Radio app, Fox Sports Radio, Fox Sports Radio.com.
Are you ready for the last weekend of summer?
Right? Last weekend of summer.
But now you're torn.
previous weekends
previous weekends
wouldn't have been that big a thing
but now you got college football on TV
and you got to kind of figure it out
right
so figuring out is a really hard thing
especially when you're like man do you want to go to the lake
one last time put some skis in the water
that some jet skis
cold beer or do you want to watch football
And I guess you can do both, right?
Like, now you can do it on your phone,
watch stuff on your phone, how great is that?
Do you get cell reception
when you're out in the middle of a lake? I don't know, that's a good question.
I think it's very much lake dependent.
Lake dependent.
And you're by the beach, same thing.
You know?
That's the great thing about our ability to have devices wherever.
You're on your phone. I'm watching the game.
Watch the game. Doing work.
Doing work.
Do you guys remember a movie called War of the Roar of the
roses. There was a time there when Kathleen Turner was one of the it women in Hollywood.
Kathleen Turner who's like if I said Kathleen Turner now, you'd be like, I don't, I don't know
how that run like there was War the Roses, but there was also Romancey and Stone and Jewel the Nile.
right and I know she was in other she was in a lot of other movies and a lot of other things she was in
Peggy Sue got married right wasn't she yeah she was in Peggy Sue got married she was also one of the
voices of who framed Roger Rabbit that was a movie a little bit ahead of its time but war of the
roses was a movie with let me see if I want to make sure I get get all these people straight
Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner were married and then
going through a divorce.
Danny DeVito was
one of their lawyers.
I think Sean Ashton was in it as well.
Like he was their son.
Right? Do you guys remember Sean Ashton? He's the one
played Rudy. But he also played Bob in Stranger Things.
He was, what was the...
What was he in the Lord of the Rings?
Samwise. I got to be honest, Lord of the Rings.
I've never stayed up to watch an entire Lord of the Rings.
I mean, I tried.
I've given it 15 different.
I can't.
It's just too long.
I just,
the ADD is completely kicking.
Just,
I've just being completely candid.
I have never watched an entire Lord of the Rings movie
because I fall asleep.
The good thing is whenever it comes on,
I'm like, oh, this is like a new movie to me.
I haven't seen it all.
It's just too long.
Too long.
Anyway,
the premise of War of the Rosie.
is that a husband and wife are going through a divorce,
Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner.
And they decide to continue living together in the same house.
And they actually take out like a red piece of tape.
And that's the, and even in the middle of the kitchen,
that red piece of tape, what's on that side is yours,
what's on this side is mine.
Obviously a quite funny and then partially scary.
really, really uncomfortable movie ensues.
Okay?
This was Richard Sherman on the Amazon broadcast.
Remember the first broadcast Amazon has.
They got Thursday night football now.
Richard Sherman, the Future Hall of Fame defensive back.
Richard Sherman had this to say about Jimmy Garoppolo's situation in San Francisco.
It's the most awkward situation I've ever heard of.
It's like a couple being divorced and the divorced wife staying in the house while the husband gets remarried.
And he picks the other spouse and the woman is like, I'm okay with this.
This is fun.
This is nice.
It's not nice.
And it's not fair to Jimmy.
I don't know what's fair or not fair to Jimmy.
I don't want to like, I don't do the, I don't do that, well, it's not fair to Jimmy.
Like, look, if somebody else wanted Jimmy, somebody else would have traded for Jimmy or Jimmy would have turned down the chance at a new contract, a reworked contract.
He was making, what, $25 million?
Now he's making $6.5 million?
So do you think for one second that Jimmy, do you?
Jimmy Garopolo would take $19 million less for this season if he thought there was anything
more out there than the $6.5 million he's going to get? Of course not. So let's not do the
fair to Jimmy unfair Jimmy. But it is awkward, right? It is awkward because I hear if you're
going to draw up what the scenario is like in real life, this is like Jimmy is the nanny or the
assistant for the new wife, isn't it?
And she's also the younger new wife.
That doesn't do well either.
You can marry anybody, but somebody half your age, like, come on.
Like, that's what it feels like.
Trey Lance's young, inexperienced, not refined.
Kind of new to this whole thing.
Jimmy's been the backup when he was in New England, got his own team.
There was some doubts.
Remember they went 5-0 his first year?
He wasn't supposed to play.
It comes in.
They go 5-0.
man, Garoppolo's the deal, signs a big contract extension, then he gets hurt, then he comes back,
then he goes to Super Bowl.
Even last year, the last game he played, they were in the NFC championship game, weren't they?
Had a chance to win the game.
Now, I would, you side with John Lynch, you side with Kyle Shanahan, those guys you would think
know what they're doing.
it's not just that they want a quarterback that makes a rookie salary.
It's not a huge salary for the next, really the next three years.
This is the soft spot in the rookie salary.
You're not making much.
And so it doesn't cost against the cap.
They can build that whole team around him.
And Trey Lance will either perform or they'll get rid of him and bring in the next guy.
But it's a weird deal for Garoppolo to be there.
I said it to start the show.
Doug Gottlie been for Colin, this is the hurt.
I said to start the show.
I understand it.
Why would you let Jimmy Garoppolo walk when he has value, he has knowledge of your offense,
he's got equity within the locker room.
And yeah, you paid him more than any other backup in the league,
but it's not a six and a half million, he's not killing you in the cap.
And you can still trade him.
Somebody else's quarterback goes down.
You can trade him and you can get back way more in return than whenever you were going to get,
trade him for in the past.
Because now he's not making $25 million.
million. Now he's making a reasonable sum of money. It makes complete sense just on a sheet of paper.
He's an asset. He's an asset. And you lowered what you're paying that asset. You refied, basically.
Man, I refied. Now, I'm going to pay him $6.5 million instead of $25 million. And I still get to keep him.
And he's there in case, you know, trade land stinks. Traylance gets hurt. Or if somebody else gets hurt, I can still trade him. Yes.
no-brainer on paper.
Kenny Maine has this great expression.
Does he still do sports center?
He does not.
He used to say, you know, on paper,
but games aren't played on paper.
They're played inside television sets.
Like, I love that.
I love that.
That's genius.
But games aren't played.
Football is about people.
Sports is about people.
Like, there's the expression
in the expression you ever go on to one of his leadership conferences.
My brother says this all the time.
He's an assistant basketball coach
has been so for 25 years
where you know, you ask people
what business they're in.
And if they give any other answer
other than the people business,
you're fired.
Because we're all in the people business.
You know, there's tons of people
way more talented than me,
than Jay Mack who was in yesterday,
but can you function in a room of people?
Can you get along with everybody?
Lots of guys who lose their gigs
because they can't get along with people.
Same thing with administrators,
teachers,
salespeople.
Like, it doesn't matter what you're selling.
You're in the people business.
Can you connect with people?
Can you get them to believe in what you're selling them?
And can you stay connected to them?
Because it's not the first sale.
It's multiple sales.
People business.
The Niners,
again,
on paper,
brilliant move.
I had Jimmy Garoppolo.
We either got to cut him.
Nobody wants to trade for them at that price.
Well,
there is option three.
You get him to take less money.
I don't know, is he going to take less money?
Let him check out the landscape.
They paid him more money than any other backup in the NFL,
which tells you that the only gigs out there for him were backup quarterback gigs.
So they get to keep Tray Lance, keep Jimmy Garoppolo, spend almost nothing on the quarterback position.
Remember, Tray Lance, year two, you don't make a ton of money.
You're spending, I don't know, I haven't looked it up.
I'm guessing like, but $12 million.
on quarterback, that's crazy in this day and age.
They went from spending way too much to way below the normal line for what you have in your
quarterback room.
And that allows them to have Debo Samuel.
That allows them to re-sign guys to load up.
And then somebody goes down in the rest of the league, they can trade Garoppolo.
They don't have to worry about them going to Seattle for week two or when they play them again.
But there's the weird part about the fact that.
He's been on the team, but not part of the team.
Here's Peter King last week talking about Garapolo and what he's been doing this preseason.
It's weird.
When I was at their camp and I watched Jimmy Garoppolo from 100 yards away on a far field practice
with nobody else out there a couple hours before the Niners regular team practiced,
it's just weird.
I heard he doesn't have a playbook.
that he's not really got any relationship with Brian Greasy
other than a hello who's the quarterback coach.
It's just weird.
It's weird.
Yeah, it's weird.
It's a lot like Richard Sherman said, weird.
A lot like War of the Roses, weird, right?
It's really war of the...
Imagine you're walking back into that building.
And now today, Jimmy Gras is like, hey, Brian Greasy,
Jimmy Garoppolo, damn good to meet you.
I've been Rush Chairman here for a couple of years,
but now I'm just a pledge.
just hey don't mind me
I'm just here you know
I'm just backup quarterback now
I'm all about Trey
on paper makes total sense
but we're all in the people business
and how those people adjust to
an awkward setting
I think it's gonna be fascinating theater
doesn't it
fascinating theater

Back at it podcast. I'm Sam Jette. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick it here,
unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode,
with Mark Lamont Hill waxing all about crack in the 80s.
To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack.
I'm down to talk about crack all day, but just so you all know.
I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack.
So I'm starting to see that there's a through line.
We also have AIDS on the table right now.
Thank you for finishing that sentence.
Yes.
I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Really?
Yeah.
For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history.

because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes
about wins and losses.
Steve Burns, Dustin Ross

However you be making it, however you're making
as part of your day, thanks so much.
God, the movie I guess
is old now.
I was, I mean, all these movie references.
Like you say you have to kind of change all your movie
references now.
Right.
Okay.
So tell me if this one is too old for you.
Okay.
Varsity Blues.
Varsity Blues is pretty solid, right? Isn't it? So there was a scene in varsity. There's several scenes in Varsity Blues, which are memorable, right? Right? There's a scene in Varsity Bluiz. Varsity Bluiz is 1999. 23 years ago. James Vanderbeek. John Voigt?
John Voigt's still alive? He's still alive, right?
Think so, right? And John Void.
late Paul Walker, obviously no longer with us.
Paul Walker was the starter.
Then he got hurt.
Then at the end he's running oopty-oop-de-friking-oop!
But there was the one scene...
Who played Billy Bob?
Billy Bob's lost a bunch of weight, hadn't he?
I want to say Billy Bob's lost a bunch of weight.
Billy Bob was the rotund.
He had a thyroid problem, right?
Thyroid problem.
That's it.
He was the extra heavy offensive lineman who was Ron Lester, I believe was his name.
He's lost a ton of weight.
It looks like a completely different human being now.
But Billy Bob, I believe he was having concussions, right?
And then he like passed out and cost him the game.
Plus they went out the night before the game or a strip club all night before a game.
Hope you're happy.
Hope you're happy.
It was a fun, good movie.
Obviously, some of the stuff was over the top.
But there was a lot of realness to it in things coaches say and things that actually happen.
Anyway, you ruin my perfect season, Billy Bob, right?
That's the line I remember.
You ruined my perfect season.
I bring that up because there's this underlying hatred between Russell Westbrook
and his new teammate.
that's a weird one it's it's one thing
to dislike or hate somebody
on another team but your own teammate
ooh
oh that's a that's what
Patrick beverly
in 2013 and there's been
the beef has not died down between pat
Bev and Russell Westover go back and track it since
2013 there's been multiple instances
when they have squared off
squared off, and there have been things that they have said, even Pat Bev on Twitter has said
things, done those subliminal tweets about Russell Westbrook. And Russell Westbrook has said
that Patrick Beverly doesn't he have actually guard anybody. He's just fooling y'all,
as we said, right? But this all comes back to 2013. The Oklahoma City Thunder were going to
and did beat the Houston Rockets in the playoffs. And Patrick Beverly goes to steal the ball
from Russell Westbrook when he's calling one of those 20-second timeouts just past mid-quake.
Do you guys remember the play?
But here's what you don't remember.
Do you know who had the best record in the Western Conference that year in the NBA?
Want to take guess?
That would be the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Like, really?
Yeah.
Yeah.
It was the Miami Heat and the Oklahoma City Thunder.
And if you go back to the year before, you're like, oh, the Oklahoma City Thunder, they were just a flash in the pan.
No, they went to the finals the year before
and the next year
they were on track to go back to the finals.
And Russell Westbrook, who's had now
four knee surgeries, that was a
meniskel tear, was having a great year.
So was Kevin Durant.
Think about what happened
after that injury.
The Thunder were never the same, ever.
Russell Westbrook's knee
has never been the same. He's still a freak athlete,
but I'm sure in his mind, he's like,
I never hurt my knee, but I've never hurt
before that moment,
blames that on,
rightfully so,
blames it on,
on Patrick Beverly.
The next series,
they played the Memphis Grizzlies
without Russell Westbrook,
and Durant struggled.
That was the Mr. Unreliable.
Do you guys remember that?
There's a headline,
Mr. Unliable,
because Kevin Durant usually reliable,
didn't play well.
That's because he was a one-man band.
The Thunder were the second best team in the NBA.
They were coming off,
they were coming off a run
to the NBA final.
they had the best record, the best record in the Western Conference.
They were never the same.
They never had that team again.
Two years later, Kevin Durant was injured.
They didn't make the playoffs.
They fired Scotty Brooks.
So Russell Westbrook is essentially John Voight, right, in varsity blues.
You ruined my perfect season.
And that never gets out of your head.
That doesn't.
You can say anything you want about, hey, we're on different teams.
Hey, we're just competitive.
If Russell Westbrook had an NBA championship to his name right now,
there's a completely different discussion about who he is and what he is.
Same for Kevin Durant.
Oklahoma City's done to win a championship or get to another finals.
They don't break up the band.
Nothing breaks up.
I don't know what happens to Golden State.
Like all of these things, it's a, what is the,
What is that called? Butterfly effect, right? Isn't that the butterfly effect?
Butterfly effect is if this one thing doesn't happen, history change. History is different.
And I guarantee that's how Russell Westbrook sees it. He was king, along with Kevin Durant of the Western Conference and of Oklahoma City.
They were young. They had a coach they dug. Teammates and everything was great until he got hurt.
And then Durant started getting defensive and they were never the same.
never the same.
So right now, Russell Westbrook's kind of like
Bud Kilmer, where he's
forever going to hold it against Patrick Beverly.
I don't see how that dog hunts.
I just do not see how they work together on.
Here's Jeannie Bus to Sam Amick.
Quote, all I can say is that from my
point of view, Westbrook was our best
player last year.
Excuse me?
He played pretty much every single game, showed up, worked hard.
You know, I would have loved to see
what this team looked like if they had stayed healthy.
It's really tough to win when Anthony Davis
isn't on the court.
Fact.
LeBron was heard a lot last season.
Fact.
But Rush showed up every game and played hard every night.
And, you know, I just appreciate him for who he is and what he brings to the team.
Excuse me?
Amick wrote after the interview ended, when I realized I'd failed to follow up quick enough
to get total clarity on the stunning take, I decided to send Jeannie Bus a note asking
if that was her actual belief.
The word I should have used was consistent.
He played 78 games last season.
He showed up for all but four of our games.
Congrats?
Congrats?
Yeah, that was one of those.
She said, what?
Excuse me?
He was our best player last year because he showed up the most.
Okay.
Okay.
And who was the bus that ran the team before Jeannie Bus?
Who got accused of not knowing anything about basketball?
Was it Jim Bus?
somewhere Jim Bus is just cackling
or maybe he's just shaking his head like
oh boy
oh boy
the idea that Jeannie Bus knows basketball
because she was once engaged
to the greatest modern day NBA coach
is pretty laughable
that's one of those quotes where
hey listen Jeannie
you're a great lady everybody likes you
the business side you guys do an excellent job there
please don't never talk about basketball ever again.
If he...
Never. I just...
Let's get to write music with the news.
Now is the herd line news.
He was consistently bad.
He consistently was available.
You know what he did?
He shot the corner three really well.
Was it really well?
He actually shot 43% on corner threes.
Okay.
It's actually a good number.
No, that is a good number.
I didn't know it was that high.
But he should...
If that's the number, then he should never shoot
any other shot. Well, I guess that goes to show you, right.
He didn't play. Let me just make sure I say this.
Russell Westbrook doesn't play hard. You have been duped.
Making mean faces and every once in a while going off, getting the steel and acting like
playing hard is at every, what percentage of possessions are you where you're supposed
to be defensively? Are you working hard? Are you dying on screens? He doesn't.
He doesn't. Anyway, go ahead. I'm sorry.
Well, I was going to say for Russell Westbrook, if he shot 43% on a corner three,
how bad was the Russ?
Right, exactly.
For him to shoot 29% on the season means he shot way too many threes that were not corner threes.
Yes.
All right, but we'll head on the NFL real quick, Doug.
Yesterday, Bill Belichick was asked about some of the up-and-down nature of the preseason so far for Mack Jones and the offense.
Here's what he had to say on WEEEI.
Where is Mack now and how concerned are you that these struggles may impact his growth as he enters his second year?
Yeah, Max had a great attitude every day.
He comes in early.
He's ready to work.
We go to work.
The end of day, we talk about what happened, make corrections, make adjustments, come in and do it the next day.
So he's one of our most consistent workers and prepares very well.
So I've seen anything other than that.
Jeannie Buss, by the way, thinks Mac Jones is a Patriots best player because these shows have to work every day.
So that was yesterday. Now today, the Patriots in the athletic, Chad Graff, he wrote about the cutdown days, specifically mentioning the quarterbacks.
Here's what he had to say. The questions here aren't about the depth chart or who's going to make the team.
They're about Mac Jones and how he'll look in Miami week one.
There's reason to believe he isn't fully prepared for year two.
his new de facto offensive coordinator has never coordinated on that side of the ball.
His offensive line has been a mess, and he's had little to no running game throughout the preseason.
Maybe that explains the struggles for the starting offense and camp, but it's not entirely fair to absolve Jones.
A little bit different tune than what we're hearing from Bill Belichick and the Patriots so far.
Well, I mean, Bill Belichick's not going to tell if he likes or dislikes some.
There's no reason for him to say if he's happy if he's not happy.
It should be pointed out that the Patriots generally use the first four.
games of the season to evaluate.
That's like extended preseason porn.
Sure.
So it stands the reason they could get molywumped when they go down to Miami.
Definitely.
But here's my honest belief on Bill Belichick.
Okay.
He went seven and nine during the COVID year when he had eight opt-outs on defense.
And he had Cam Newton who didn't have training camp with him and couldn't throw a football.
Cam Newton stunk.
I know he had the Seattle game.
He was like, oh, look at Seattle game.
The rest of that year.
He had three games
when he threw for under 100 yards
as a starting quarterback.
And they still won seven games.
And that was in a division
where you had Buffalo
and Miami won double-digit games that year.
That was a pretty good division.
Last year they go to the playoffs
with a rookie quarterback.
Again, same division,
which is better than you think division
considering Miami,
ended up being, what, about 500?
So it looks like
a weird path and one that I don't
know how many people will follow, right? Using Matt Patricia, using Joe Judge, two guys who
haven't been offensive coordinators to call plays. But I do think that Bill Belichick, he gets
the benefit of the doubt because he's Bill freaking Belichick. Let's just see how it plays out.
That's right. Music with News.
Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by.
The Heard Line News. Danny Cannell is joining us courtesy of BetOnline.com.
or betonline.net.
You can check out bet online for updated college football
playoff win totals, conference,
Heisman trophy, and of course, week one lines.
I want to get to college football in a second,
but Danny, have you ever played quarterback
when your O.C. hadn't called plays before?
I have not, and thank goodness,
because I barely survived as it was in the NFL.
If I would have had a coordinator with no experience,
it would have been a complete nutter disaster.
and I assume you're talking about the New England Patriots
because what is happening there,
it's an unbelievable bit of arrogance,
I do think,
on the behalf of Bill Belichick,
deciding to go with,
and not naming one,
getting cute with it all season long,
and not determining one.
But I guess you do have to give him the benefit of the doubt.
He's the greatest coach that we've seen in our lifetime,
and he's won,
and he's figured it out.
But I think it's a massive risk,
And I think it potentially endangers Mac Jones' future as an NFL franchise quarterback
because he's going to be the one that accepts most of the blame if things don't go well.
And he had a way more promising rookie year than I thought he would have.
He actually really surprised me last year.
I went to the game where Brady went back to Foxborough and he went toe to toe to
with all season long.
I thought it exceeded expectations for a rookie with not much around him.
Now the roster isn't that great around him.
And you're asking him to work with a.
first year or first time ever play caller.
To me, it seems like a little risky maneuver here for the Patriots.
Very, very, very risky, but I'm standing by the, like, if the old man fails,
the old man has earned the right to fail this way.
Let's get into your ACC wheelhouse, okay?
I think we're all focusing on Florida State because you're an alum, but there's,
the ACC actually has historically great programs, right?
you got Miami who they feel like with NIL now they can buy themselves a team and they've only
they've only been good when they've bought teams now you can legally do it right uh you got
Florida state you got Clemson who dominated this league for a decade and now they're trying
to recover from a disappointing season and he got Virginia Tech who like oh I forgot Virginia
Tech used to be awesome who's the most likely to turn it around the quickest oh that's a good one
I'll go it is an arms race can
agree on that. It's an arms race. College football is a spending arms race who can spend the most money. So as much as I hate to admit it, I think it's probably the Miami Hurricanes. Talent rich. You know, and look, Florida State is in the state of Florida. It's in Tallahassee, though, which is really close to the border of Georgia. I mean, it's up there, you know, it's seven-hour drive from where I live in South Florida. Miami, a little bit more talent, close to home. They have just as much tradition. But most importantly, they have. They have.
a billionaire that's funding this whole project of bringing Mario back from Oregon,
making a push for a new stadium, which, by the way, I think is the most significant to any move.
If they could get a new stadium close to campus, watch out for the hurricanes.
But they're starting to recruit with anybody in the country, and they've got a billionaire backing it.
And Mario's a great coach.
And their quarterback, Tyler Van Dyke, maybe the best in the ACC.
see, I'm not really ready to go there yet over Devin Larry at NC State, but he's a stud in the making.
So I think as much as I hate to admit as the Florida State guy, I think, and this is over the course of five years.
I think Florida State might be better than Miami this season because I think Miami it might take some time.
But over the next five years, Miami's got deep pockets, tradition.
You know, I think they're probably the best bet to turn things around.
We're going to see Notre Dame take on Ohio State.
and the question last year, they got C.J. Stroud.
Offensively, they were great. They bring in Jim Knowles.
They pay him nearly $2 million. He was awesome as defense coordinator,
my own model, Oklahoma State.
Yeah.
Is that enough to get, because Ohio State needs a defense based on how they play last year.
Does Jim Knowles fix it?
They'll be better, but here's what I want to know.
When was the last time you saw a defensive coordinator make a sack or make an interception
or a tackle for loss?
Like, they still have to step it up personnel-wise and have somebody on the defense.
side of the ball that steps up like a Joey or Nick Bosa or a Chase Young, that dominant
defender that teams are just scared of because for whatever reason, since those guys left,
they have not had it. Now, they've got a five-star defensive lineman and Jack Sawyer. They've got
a guy named Zach Harrison along the defensive front. They've got some young talent that have a lot
of stars in front of their name. So maybe Jim Knowles is able to get that out of them.
but here's where I think Ohio State could win a national championship.
I don't think it's the blueprint that the Georgia Bulldogs used last year with the best defense we've seen, you know, in the last 20 years.
It would be more closely resembled to the 2019 LSU team with Joe Burrow and Jamar Chase and all the weapons that they had on the offensive side of the ball
were the most prolific offense we've seen in the last decade, one with offense, because that's what Ohio State has and there is no argument around it.
and as LSU showed the example, you can win that way.
And I think their defense will be better,
so they won't be as susceptible to getting pushed around
like they to get its Oregon and Michigan last year.
So I think their offense clearly is going to be right.
Jim Nulles was fantastic for Oklahoma State.
I mean, they led the country in sacks.
They had a physical defense.
He'll bring a better mentality.
But I don't think that's what they're going to hang their hat on.
But the good news is they don't have to with all that firepower.
Why are these college coaches, like Dan Lennon is the coach's first game against Georgia,
is pretty obvious he's going to start Bo Nix, right?
Which is really cool.
And I don't know how many people know this outside of the...
Everybody in the South knows it.
The oldest rivalry in the South is Auburn versus Georgia, right?
That's an incredible game.
And of course, Bo Nix, his dad played at Auburn.
He started as a freshman at Auburn.
Now he's at Oregon, and he's going to start for his new coach,
came from Georgia.
They're going to play against Georgia,
an old rival first game in season.
But why does college coach do this thing where I don't want to give it away?
and name who my starter is.
So I'm with you.
I think Bo Nix is going to start.
To me, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense unless, like Brian Kelly for LSU.
He's playing against Florida State in the non-Sundaynight, New Orleans.
Now, he hasn't named his starter, but he has two, no one really knows.
Maybe Jane Daniels who transferred in from Arizona State, maybe Garrett Nussmeyer,
who's been there.
But here's why I don't think you tell anybody if you're Brian Kelly, because they are two
completely different style of quarterbacks who, you have.
have to prepare for differently if you're a defense. Bo Nix and Ty Thompson, I don't know if there's
going to be that much difference in the system they run with either quarterback. And there's a lot of
newness anyway. So I almost feel you're at a detriment sometimes to the team itself when the team's
probably wondering who's going to be our guy? Like, if we have a drive in the fourth quarter and we need
to win a game, who's it going to be? And you lose some of those reps with the first team if there is a true
competition, which you're probably starting to lean that way. And most of those players in the
locker room probably know who it's going to be. But it just creates an uncertainty that seems
completely unnecessary. And I've actually appreciated coaches who have come out and just said,
all right, this is who it's going to be, naming the starter. And at this point, week of the game,
unless you have two completely different style of quarterbacks and maybe you really don't
know who it's going to be, I don't think it makes any sense to keep everybody in the dark anymore.
What do USC look like?
USC is going to be offensive firepower.
I mean, we all know that.
But here's the thing, and this is why I'm selling the USC fade hype just a little bit,
all the firepower that Lincoln Riley has brought in there.
Caleb Williams is quarterback.
He's got Travis Dye, the running back from Oregon.
He's got Jordan Addison, and he took in from Pitt.
Mario Williams, a wide receiver he brought with Oklahoma as well.
There's a trend here.
They're all in the offensive side of the ball.
This USC roster needs complete overhaul, not just,
offensive overhaul. So I think it could be a struggle for USC at against the more physical
teams in the PAC 12. And if they want to win a PAC 12 championship, that probably means Utah.
It means Oregon. And, you know, in beating those teams potentially twice in the end and watch
out for a Notre Dame team that they always play end of the season. And UCLA, I think people
are sleeping on UCLA completely across town. I think it's going to be a good year, a better year for
USC. I think the positive, the future is bright for the USC Trojans. But as far as a
playoff contender or a national championship contender, I think people are out of their
mind as far as going there this year. Two years, talk to me then, but this year, way too much
to overcome on the defense side of the ball. Can you imagine if you were, I would never wish anything
bad upon you, Danny, we've been doing each other too long. Can you imagine if you're in a coma?
You woke about the coma and you were a huge college ball fan. You're like, LSU plays Florida
State and neither are ranked to start the season. Like that is just...
That's crazy.
That really one, okay, one goes to it, especially considering what LSU was just a couple years ago.
Like this.
That's what I was going to say.
It could be a five-year coma for Florida State and only a two-year coma for LSU fan.
It is pretty crazy.
And here's the thing.
I think LSU probably has a better chance to be back quicker than Florida State.
Again, it's hard for me to admit that.
But when Florida State's win totaled this season and Mike Norville's third year is only seven and a half.
half. It just shows you. And Florida State fans probably would be thrilled if you could get to
eight wins. That shows you how far the program has fallen. I do think Mike Norvel has it headed
in the right direction. I do like Florida State in the matchup Sunday night to win that game,
not only to take them with a field goal, but to win the game. But LSU, I think Brian Kelly,
this should not be offensive to any Notre Dame fan that he left them. It was very clear. He
has restrictions or whoever it is. Marcus Freeman now at Notre Dame.
you have restrictions on the type of athlete you can recruit and bring in to South Bend to play for you at Notre Dame
that you simply don't have at LSU.
LSU, their administration, the athletic director, the fans, the boosters.
Whatever you need.
What do you need?
Do you need this player?
Oh, what's his academic?
No problem.
Any issues personally?
Well, we'll worry about that later.
Whatever facility you need built, whatever it is he has at his disposal.
And at Notre Dame, you don't.
And so I think that was a very important.
the reality is he was tired of coach him with one arm behind his back and wants to try his hand
with a full complement of all kind of resources at his disposal.
And I can't blame him.
And I do think he wins eventually at LSU.
But question number one is who's his quarterback going to be until he figures that out.
It's really hard to get a grasp of how soon LSU can be back on the national stage.
Haynes King won the job at A&M last year, right?
But this year, I think this is going to be fascinating, right?
because if you use the NIL money,
and like, look, we can say it's not buying kids,
but they bought an incredible recruiting class, right?
Yeah, best ever.
Best ever.
But the problem with that is,
if you don't play them,
they're going to leave and go get a check elsewhere, right?
And if you do play them,
kind of hard to win with kids in the SEC.
And A&M, this is like anybody who is a big 12 guy.
Like every year there was the hype train for,
A&M, no matter who the coach was.
And they didn't deliver.
Does this team deliver?
Not this year.
I mean, I think this is Alabama's year again in the SEC West.
I think Texanamo would be good.
But you know, what's wild is, you know,
they brought in Jimbo Fisher to win a national championship
because they were close.
They were good with Kevin Sumlin, who was there before him.
Eight and nine wins and 11 wins season when he had Johnny Mansell.
What has Jimbo Fisher done?
9 and 4, 8 and 5, 9 in 1, 8, and 4.
Now, the 9-1 season, right in the cuts of the playoffs.
A lot of people excited about that.
And then again, last year you beat Alabama,
but then you had several disappointing losses
where you're like, what just happened?
So there's a tremendous amount of pressure on Jimbo Fisher,
and I don't think it happens this year because of what you're talking about.
I think even SEC fans and Texan M fans are smart enough to realize,
it takes time.
You can't win with babies out there,
and they have a slew of them on their team.
but here's the crazy thing.
If Haynes King hits, who runs a 4-4-40 and Jimbo will utilize his legs as an offensive weapon,
they've got Devon A chain, they're running back back, they've got some of this young talent.
If Haynes King is special, which very much remains in doubt what he's going to be at all,
but if he's special, they could contend this year in the SEC.
But if he's not, they could see another eight and four season coming their way,
which I just wonder how much patience the Aggie fans have if that's what they get where the coach,
and, you know, $75 million.
Yeah, it's going to be interesting.
You know, Haynes, he won the job last year,
and he broke his leg against Colorado,
and we'll see another very highly-touted prospect.

Yes.

Really?
Yeah.
For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history.

Let's get to the best for last.
It's almost the end of the show, but that doesn't mean we're phoning it in.
Nope, we grind to the very last segment.
It's time for best for last.
I saw this story from Sports Illustrated.
LeBron James is on the cover of Sports Illustrated, which by the way, remember when being
on the cover of Sports Illustrated used to mean something, but apparently he now wants to play,
with his older son, Brani.
Now he wants to play with his younger son, Bryce.
So, like, this is the Lakers.
The Lakers want to win a championship,
and we're turning it into, like,
like a family three-on-three team?
That does not...
So, okay, again, Bryce is 15.
Factor in four years before he's in the NBA,
if he gets to be good enough.
There's questions about Brony,
who's a very good player,
probably like a mid-major plus, you know.
Eventually, Brony could be an NBA player.
He's just not going to be for a couple of years.
Same thing with Bryce.
So, again, four or five years from now, he's in his mid-40s.
This feels like mop-up game at the end of a game,
almost sort of summer league big three sort of feel to it.
Yikes.
Yikes.
Look, I love the fact that he wants to make it about his
family. I love how he isn't engaged father. Like there are no negatives about wanting the best
for your kids and being there for them. But it becomes a lot about him, not about them.
Because to this point, there isn't anybody who thinks they're definitely NBA players. And in order
to get LeBron, you have to acquiesce and promise that they'll get a shot. And that just
feels like it's about him.
If you're a young NBA star,
do you want to play on a team where dad and two sons are on the team?
