good to have you and we were very lucky uh steve young yesterday max crosbie who's lined up uh opposite george kittle but mostly opposite travis kelsey for much of his career and max has eaten as they say against the chiefs he's had five sacks ten games against mahomes and the chief's offense and i was asking max crosbie when he does line up against Travis kelsey how does it go i'm just speaking for all d ends across the world if a tight end is able to to block you, you need to look in the mirror and figure out something else to do because that's the number one rule. That's the number one rule. Tight end should not be able to block you. And it doesn't matter who they are. Travis Kelsey, Kittle, all those guys. I love them. I know them. I know them very well,

but I'm sure they'll say the same. I respect them. But, you know, the league's a little bit different nowadays. The tight ends are more, you know, they're receivers. They're big receivers nowadays. Yeah, he said, and by the way, he said he doesn't, he kind of, uh, he kind of, uh, doesn't want somebody else to beat Kansas City. He wants to knock Kansas City off. But he's played both teams. Drew Breeze. Talk to Drew about once every couple of years.

20 years. One of the great, he's number two to Brady on a lot of stuff in the all-time record book. Obviously, a Super Bowl champ and an MVP, a 13-time Pro Bowl, or a couple days ago, there was a story about comparing Breeze and Brock Purdy. I said, could we slow down a little here? It's Drew Breeze. Let's slow down just a little. I like Brock Purdy. I mean, Drew Brees was the 32nd pick, which, by the way, today would be first round.

But I do think, Drew, first of all, thanks for coming by. There are, I will say this. You played at non-traditional powers, although those Purdue teams were wildly ahead of their time offensively. But do you watch Brock Purdy a little and say to yourself, yeah, I mean, there's some comps, or do you not see any of it? No, I see a lot of comparisons. But honestly, the thing that I love about him the most, is the fact that he was a guy who went to Iowa State and not highly recruited.

He started 47 games in college, right? And similar to Purdue, most of the time when we were stepping on the field during our college days, we were the underdog, right? We weren't winning the beauty pageant. Like, we were going to have to scratch and claw and find ways to win those games. So we were in a ton of competitive situations, right? And look, that mold you, that wires you in a lot of ways. I think it helps prepare you certainly for when you get into the NFL and the line between

winning and losing is so fine. And I think to his benefit, he gets drafted to a place. Forget where he got drafted. He gets drafted to a place like the San Francisco 49ers where he's got an unbelievable offensive mind in Kyle Shanahan, a team that's been architected by John Lynch to have long-term success, a great defense, a great run game, just a great scheme all the way around. but it takes a guy who can help orchestrate and manage all of that. And I see certainly his intellectual capabilities,

his ability to manage all the shifts in motions that are happening on every play, like the motion landmarks, all the details that go into making this offense really successful, meant a ton of that responsibility falls on the quarterback. And he's handled it with poise. He obviously is a very timing rhythm thrower, which is what I was. But I think he showed us all what kind of an athlete he was. last week by taking off and run going outside the system and going and winning that game last week. Yeah, you were always, especially early to mid-career, way more athletic than people realize.

And I said two weeks ago, Brock's more athletic than I've given him credit for. Is everybody ages? You don't want to get hit as much, run as much. But I do think he's got, he moves. You know, it's, I said, I kind of feel like the pressures on San Francisco, not just because Andy Reid is won, but the Niners have had this roster, Drew. God, it feels like when you were in the league a few years ago, they were, we kept saying, this is the best roster in the league. And I do wonder if it will change play calling.

It's tied eight minutes left, 24, 24. When you have that, and I, you know, again, you won a lot of games in New Orleans. But you knew in New Orleans when you got to that Super Bowl, you know, you got Brady and Manning. This may be your moment. This may be your moment. Do you feel previous games when you get late to a Super Bowl? Super Bowl that's tied. Did you feel pressure, organizational, historic, or was it just you and Sean were going to dial

stuff up and do what you've done all season? We're going to dial it up. We're going to play aggressive, and we're pulling out all the stops. And you look back to our Super Bowl, and that's exactly what it was. I actually think that there's a lot of similarities. I was looking across the ball at Peyton Manning. I knew that we had to be precise. We need to be exact.

We need to be mistake-free. We needed to execute to perfection in order to beat that Indianapolis Colts team. That was one of the best teams in history. They shouldn't have lost a game. And I think as San Francisco is looking across the ball, they're looking at a similar guy in Patrick Mahomes. And so you're thinking to yourself as a quarterback, look, it's not additional pressure.

Because honestly, I think if you prepare every week as if I have to go out and prove something and I have to play my very best in order for us to win, then why is the preparation for this game any different than anything that you've ever done? So you have to be able to block that stuff out and say, I'm going to go out here, I'm going to execute this offense, I'm going to execute the perfection, I'm going to keep this other guy off the field, we're going to win this game.

You know, by the time you got to the Super Bowl, both you and Manning, you were, trajectory was Hall of Fame. You were a great player, everybody knew it. There was no dispute. And Mahomes now, nobody's arguing. He's a top 10, top 5 guy. Did that help you going into a game? game sort of thinking, listen, I got nothing to prove here.

This offense works. God, I mean, you think your offense with Peyton was top one or two for a decade. Did it, did it you feel, and even though you were against Manning, you were both considered elite. You were the best NFC quarterback. He was up there with Tommy and the AFC. Give me your mindset going into the Super Bowl. Brock's not established. You were established. Mahomes established. Did it help confidence? Did it settle nerves and anxiety going into the biggest game of your life? This is what you have to tell yourself, and this is what Brock's going to have to tell himself, is don't try to play outside of yourself. Just be yourself. Execute the offense. Like, execute the play.

Measure yourself based on decision-making and nothing else. That's how you simplify this game. And look, he's done that very well this entire season. I think the best thing that could have happened to San Francisco this season is, remember they had that three-game stretch, you know, where they lost. to Cleveland. They lost a couple others. Brock wasn't, didn't play well. The team didn't play well. They needed that adversity, right? Things were going too well up until that point. You needed some adversity.

They got it. They, they recovered from that. And then they get in the playoffs. And honestly, I looked at those two games against the Packers and Lions as games that they probably should have established a lead and won. Not handily, but

won in a much different fashion. All of a sudden, they found themselves outplayed and down in both of those games. Yeah. Right. Late. And they had to kind of dig deep and find a way to put together a drive against Green Bay and go down the field in the rain and win that game. To overcome a 17-point deficit, right?

And win that game outside of the way you thought they might have. And so that's just poised them for this moment, right? Where they know going into this game now, no matter what the circumstances, man, we're just going to play our game and we're going to have a chance to win. You know, Spags was with the Saints as a D.C. So you faced Spags in practice and all this stuff. I think Steve is one of those guys that's just, he's really, really, he and Andy, there's no ego. They really work in unison. Andy obviously respects him.

Spaggs knows how good Andy is. In big games, go back to Steve and what he had done in big games. He's aggressive. I mean, he'll bring corners. You're smiling as I say this. When I say Spags, big games, what do you think of? You said exactly what I was going to say was in big games. This guy has put together some unbelievable game plans,

and he does not shy away from what is his mentality and his style, which is being highly aggressive. He's got excellent pressure packages. He instills a ton of confidence in his defenses. He does ask a lot of them in regards to adjustments in order to orchestrate these pressures, especially against the team like San Francisco, that is always on every play, shift motion, right?

Like, that takes a lot of orchestration on defense. So how can we simplify and yet still have our guys playing aggressive and pinning their ears back and going and getting the quarterback, right? Or getting in the backfield and being disruptive. And honestly, if you ask me what's the biggest reason for Casey's success here as of late, I'm going to say it's the defense. Yes, I give Patrick Mahomes and that offense a ton of credit. But I think what's maybe been overshadowed just because,

Ash at Mahomes is so great, is how well this defense has played and how well they've run the football. And those are a quarterback's best friends. I have a great parlay for you this weekend. You know, Brady didn't score touchdowns early in the Super Bowl. He didn't. I don't know if it was anxiety. Two days ago, James Jones told me he went into a Super Bowl with dislocated fingers, and his adrenaline was so high. He didn't bandage him. He's like, I can't even feel my hands. Go back to your first series in the Super Bowl.

And again, you've been in so many Big Ten games, so many big games. But do you remember your first series? We're there? I mean, it's hard for me to see Drew Breeze nervous. But do you remember the first series? Yeah, and I was nervous. Yeah, like first three plays. First three plays were a blur.

And it's funny because, like, you would think Sean Payton this high-flying offense, like, man, we might come out and just throw all-go on the first play or something. We ran basically, like, full-back belly right up the A-gap for, like a three- or four-yard game. And I remember, you know, Bill Parcells was obviously a great mentor for Sean and coach him for a long time. I remember Parcells made the comment, something like, that was the best you could do on the first play,

was running fullback belly. Right? Like, does the fullback even exist in our offense? But it was one of those like, hey, let's just break the ice, right? And then let's just get this thing going. I remember I overthrew Robert Meacham on the first third down play of a game that probably could have been a touchdown on third and six by like 10 yards. And I was sitting there going, come on, dude, just calm down.

I'm like, man, it's just another game, right? Like you've prepared, you're ready for this. So, chill. It's so good to see you. By the way, on behalf of FedEx Air and Ground NFL Player of the Year awards, Drew Brees. So explain that because all season long, people vote on that, Drew, if I'm correct on that. That's right. So FedEx Air and Ground Player of the Year, it's a totally fan-based voting award.

I was able to win this award four times from my career. It's a tremendous honor. But this year, Brock Purdy is the FedEx Air Player of the Year, and Christian McCaffrey is the FedEx Ground Player of the Year. So first time, it's been teammates on the same team. So maybe that's foreshattering for the game on Sunday. But in addition, FedEx is going to contribute $20,000 on behalf of both players, so $40,000 total, to the HBCU of their choice to fund scholarship programs.

So it's tremendous. By the way, I text Sean Pay. I never want to bother Sean. He worked here for a year, and I love the guy, and he's great storyteller. Go to dinner with Sean. You're going to get an hour and a half of stories, and we talked about you a lot. Even if you've heard him already. I'm sure you have.

I hadn't. But it's interesting that first year in Denver, and people were banging on him for like, and I'm like, okay, he's an authentic guy. Sean's going to wear it. He did make them significantly better offensively, but you've lived in the tunnel of Sean Payton's intensity. What did you make of his first year in Denver? I think, you know, I went and actually saw them during training camp and hung out with Sean. And, I mean, I feel like he brought half the coaching staff or half the players that that I coached with it are now on the coaching staff. So I feel like I know all those guys.

Obviously, I know the system. I mean, it was definitely a learning process or growing process, especially early on. Obviously, they struggled where they start off one in five, and then they kind of went on a tear. You could tell that they really kind of brought it together, and we're starting to play complementary football on both sides. I still felt like, you know, just from watching it offensively,

you know, like just the hallmarks of what is a Sean Payton offense, the tempo especially and just the rhythm and the timing and kind of the run-pass balance and just some of the creativity. I felt like it was just still evolving and it was probably not to the level that he would like to get it. At the same time, look, I think we knew it was going to be a bit of a process. I think they do have a talented roster. I think they've got an ownership group that is going to equip him with the resources that he needs to really build a consistent. a winner there. I know, certainly know that's where his headsets at. He's, he's one of those guys

that can immediately step in and change your culture and make sure he sets a standard of excellence. That's one of his great traits. So I'm, I'm confident that they're going to, they're going to be a contender here. Well, you're eligible for the Hall of Fame in 2026. You know, it,

you mean, you've had so many, I mean, you're second, first in so many categories. Hall of Fame, though, Drew, to you. Like, how impactful. Like, that man, that's, that's one of those. They can't eclipse you can't get past in a hall of fame right like would that be the greatest moment would it be super bowl win hall of fame take me to what that means to you yeah you you know it i feel like the

the hall of fame it's almost like it's almost like one of those things that just sits out there in outer space right that as a kid like when you're when you're dreaming of of being an athlete and just playing sports like you do it you do it it because you love it and you hope that you'll have opportunities to do it for as long as you possibly can and so within our sport what does that equate to well man i got the chance to go and play in the big ten at peru university and oh look at this i'm getting drafted right man my goal now is just to become a a solid starter and a leader on my team and then wow you know i could be pretty good at this you know a pro bowler you know let's let's win a super bowl you know let's win a championship

let's be considered the best and then man let's play this game as long as i can and then after that It's, well, you know, kind of what's, what's this next, you know, what's this next thing that sits out there? It's Hall of Fame. And yet, man, did I ever in my wildest dreams imagine that this would ever be a possibility? And I think what you realize is just the opportunities I've had to go to Canton and just walk around the Hall of Fame and be around Hall of Famers, guys with the Gold Jacket is it's just a really, really elite club. and I don't think you fully understand or grasp what it means until all of a sudden they slip that jacket on your shoulders. So all of us can speculate, you know, and we can talk about what it means and all those things, but until it actually happens, I don't think maybe you just, you fully recognize the meaning of it all. But it is special.

It is special, and I would not take it for granted, and I'd be extremely honored. Yeah, I've seen people, when I've seen Jimmy Johnson get emotional, these hardened coaches and these great big guys and what that gold jacket does to them. Canton is one. I mean, there's a lot of Hall of Fame's, but I've lucky enough to I've worked with Hall of Famers before, and it is, let me tell you, man, it is an elite club. That American Express doesn't get you into that club, brother. That's a really a unique club, and you're going to get there and you're going to have earned it the entire way. One of the all-time greats, I've said, the most accurate throw-reys. the football I've seen in my life, Drew Brees.

Big Ten doesn't have a lot of recent final forces show, but Purdue's been pretty good for a couple of years. Yeah, they got a shot to win the title. They got an automatic basket with that guy. Connecticut, keep your eye on Connecticut. Kansas. The defending champs, keep your eye on them, yes.

That's got a shot at me. Arizona, hey, Arizona, your buddy. Wait, do you have a friend who likes Arizona? No. Gonzaga. I do. Yeah. J-Mack with a news.

No, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. All right, so we'll start with an interesting list. So Sports Illustrated, Colin, ranked the top 25 performances by a quarterback in the Super Bowl. Okay? Top 25.

A lot of Tom Brady, a lot of Joe Montana, a lot of Eli Manning. You know who didn't make the list? Who? Patrick Mahomes. Now, I don't want you to upset Nick by telling him this, because we know a lot of people think Mahomes is already the goat. Doesn't have, in his Super Bowl appearances, a top 25 showing in the Super Bowl. Well, one was a disaster.

Payton Manning had one of those two. You can have, everybody's, some of the greats have had disasters. Okay, fine, we throw out the disaster. He was outplayed last year by Jalen Hertz. Did get the win, but Jalen Hertz was better on the field. Right? Than Mahom. And then the Holmes had the comeback, which was largely aided by Williams,

a running back who had three touchdowns and should have won the MVP. That's either here or no there. Bottom line. And I see. He's never had a great Super Bowl. That's fair. That's not a, that's very fair. Yeah.

You're not, you're just, this is, he's had. great playoff games. Certainly. He has not had a great super. Now, he was good against the Eagles. I'm not taking it anyway. Hertz was better. Hertz should have won the other.

He has been, like Brock Purdy, he has been very good twice at the end of a game where he's played his absolute best. He had to throw to Tyreek Hill against the Niners, the third and 17. And that Philadelphia run he made, he peeled off that 40-yard run with a bat. Oh, my God. Very Brock Purdy of him. That was one of the best Super Bowl plays in memory. And to be fair.

Limping down the field. The top three are Steve Young. in the Super Bowl. Doug Williams for Washington. Nick Foles had the number three Super Bowl playoff performance. You've found a lot of value with George Kittle of fifth rounder and Gronk later in the draft. Lord Kelsey was not a first round pick, was he? No, Kelsey was fourth round, Cincinnati fifth round. No, I mean, a lot of your great tight ends.

Antonio Gates was undrafted, I think. That's right. So, I mean, that's four great tight ends that's four great tight ends that. went later. I'm doing some draft stuff. It sounds like he's probably not going to go in the top ten, for sure. Brock Bowers. It's not a shocker.

young, aggressive, highly productive Chiefs defense. And I asked Greg Kosell, 44 years NFL films, on what he's seeing in the postseason games, two of them, from Brock Purdy. Purdy has not played his best football in the two playoff games, but he still made some important plays. But at his core, he's a timing rhythm thrower. He's very accountable to the system. But I want people to understand that he still is asked to make a lot of difficult throws.

and we should not look at Purdy to use the vernacular that's thrown out all the time as a system player. Every quarterback is. He's asked to make a lot of difficult throws between the numbers, between the hashes. Those are hard throws to make, and he stands in there and delivers the football. We saw him against the Lions in the NFC championship game. We saw him go above the X's and O's playoff script and make important plays. So I had my top 10 players in this game. No, Brock Purdy did not make it.

That's because of the top 10 players, seven feel like Hall of Famers, maybe eight. I do think in my top 10 list, Mahomes is the best player. He has the first quarterback in league history was zero picks in six straight playoff games. McCaffrey is the league's best running back, Hall of Famer for sure. Trent Williams, arguably best left tackle in a decade. I would put him as the third best player. defensive line this year has nine fewer sacks, 26 fewer rushes than the Chief's defensive front. But Bose has been the catalyst.

Travis Kelsey is a big game player, like Gronk with Brady, often plays his best in the biggest games and the biggest moments. Debo Samuel is the most unique chess piece since the late Aaron Hernandez. They win 70% of their games when he plays. And this roster wins 47 when he doesn't. That is crazy. I mean, only quarterbacks, I thought, had that kind of influence, add Debo. Chris Jones has been next to Aaron Donald, the best interior defensive lineman in the league for a couple of years, several years. Kittle is going to be a Hall of Famer.

You know, it's hard to, you know, Kelsey and Kittler are both Hall of Famers. I think Kelsey's been a little bigger and big game. Some of that, though, is tied to Mahomes, obviously. A surging player who PFF had as the second highest graded wide receiver in the league. Now, Jemak was on this guy early. I think early this year you were like he's going to be a star. You were right. Brandon Ayuk has been remarkable for them.

Really a game breaker and over the top. And then Ligerius Sneed is, if you throw the ball to Lagerius Sneed, the quarterback's going to have about a 60 passer rating. I do think Fred Warner is 11. McDuffie's probably 12. And then you get into the Brock Pretty category, 13, 14, 15, somewhere around there. My only pushback is, is this. current this season right now?

Or is this a career achievement? No, this is in this game, these are the 10 best players. Okay. Right now. Well, unfortunately, it's tough for us to have the discussion like a month ago that, well, I don't think we said the W word with Travis Kelsey, but like he's starting to show decline. There were major chinks in the armor all season for Travis Kelsey. I haven't seen it in three weeks.

Okay, that's a three game sample size. Yeah, the three biggest games. And I like George Kettle a lot. He is an awesome soundbite. I think he'd do great in media or just having a fun life. I wouldn't have him in the top 10. Is he a really good title? No doubt about it.

But, listen, outside of Purdy, who I think is embarrassing to not have him on there, I think Isaiah Pacheco for sure should be on that list. Right now, that dude's an animal. He is a game-changing running back, never goes down on the first team. If I have Pacheco on the list, then Brock Purdy can't get in. No, no, I just took two guys off. Who did you take Kettle off. And I said the other guy, I'm not going to repeat it,

but I said the other guy. I don't think he's a top 10. Who? Who? The other tight end. You think Travis Kelsey's the top 10 player in this game? I think his career's been amazing. He's a Hall of Famer.

Right now, I don't. Did you watch the Baltimore game? He was excellent against Baltimore. He was. It was pretty good against Buffalo. Okay, I guess. I mean, he was tremendous against Baltimore. How about Miami?

That was pretty good there, too. Negative 30 degrees. Dolphins didn't want to tackle anybody. He has 23 catches for 265 yards. three games. This season, he was not great. It's okay to say that. And I love Taylor Swift. I like Travis Kelsey. It's okay to say he didn't have a great season and we're elevating him off three games. You guys, hold on. He did have a good season. It was okay. He led all tight ends in receptions and receiving yards this season. Okay. When you look at his career and then you look at Travis Kelsey this season. You're now you're comparing him to him. Well, it's like same thing with the homes. That's like comparing Taylor Swift albums.
