Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque.
Starting point is 00:00:42 Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, what's good, y'all? You're listening to Learn the Hardway with your favorite therapist and host Kear Games.
Starting point is 00:01:10 This space is about black men's experiences, having honest conversations that it's really not safe to have anywhere, but you're having them with a licensed professional who knows what he's doing. How many men carry a suit or armor? It signals to the world that you're not to be played with. And just because you have the capability that does not mean that you need to. Listen to learn the hard way on the AHA radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. Hey, this is Robert from the Stuff to Blow Your Mind podcast. Joe and I are both lifelong Star Wars fan, so we're celebrating May the 4th with a brand new week of fun, thought-provoking Star Wars-related episodes.
Starting point is 00:01:47 Join us as we tackle science and culture topics from a galaxy far, far away, such as the biology of Tontons and Wampas on the ice planet, or the practicality and corporate business sense of the Sith rule of two. Listen to stuff to blow your mind on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Thanks for listening to The Heard podcast. Be sure to catch us live every weekday from 12 to 3 Eastern, 9 to noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and FS1. Find your local station for the herd at Fox Sports Radio.com or stream us live every day on the iHeartRadio app by searching Herd. You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Starting point is 00:02:26 All right, hour three. Ready to go live in LA, it's the herd. Wherever you may be and however you may be listening, IHeart Radio, Fox Sports Radio and FS1. I was just talking during the break with Joy Taylor. I started watching. I could ramble about this for hours. First of all, timing's an amazing thing.
Starting point is 00:02:44 Can I go for like three minutes here? Sure. Timing's an amazing thing. It is. So people, the reason you want to just keep reading and reading and reading and reading, a lot of the biggest Mark Cuban, Elon Musk people, a lot of times what they do is they have other people running their companies, and they read a lot and meet a lot with people because they just want more information to make good decisions.
Starting point is 00:03:06 That's ultimate wealth. I mean, you and I make a good living, but I got to sit on the treadmill every day and do a show. The richest people in the world sit around reading and inhaling and consuming information while their lieutenants do the day-to-day work, and they're talking to other smart people, and they're reading the Wall Street Journal, The Economist, Bloomberg Opinion. You know, that's what our bosses do upstairs. They're eating peanut brittle all day and just reading stuff. And we're out here, you know, on the treadmill.
Starting point is 00:03:35 So Rupert Murdoch, timing is amazing. Rupert Murdoch a couple years ago, he owns the company, sold the movie business. I swear to God, I haven't thought about going to a movie in three years. And I was talking to my wife about this here or day. It's the greatest timing ever. the Oscar ratings tank. Nobody's watching movies. I mean, you get about one movie a year, two that hit at the theater.
Starting point is 00:04:00 I just go home and I watch, I don't go to the theater anymore. And it's like, that's good timing. That is, I mean, you're in the movie business for 40 years. You're like, Seacrest out. We also had a pandemic that shut all the theaters down. And it literally, it is caved unless you have the Avengers. Yeah. And that's the first thing I'm thinking about.
Starting point is 00:04:18 The second thing I'm thinking about. So I started watching this. It makes me think about watching this. in this Hugh Hefner documentary. So Hugh Heffner lived about five minutes from here. Yeah. And his big Playboy mansion, I don't know who owns it now. And I went to it one time I got invited to a party.
Starting point is 00:04:31 It was Peyton Manning was there. And Pete Carroll was there. It was a USC was on fire. It was all sorts of famous people in the bunnies. And I'm not really going to go into the grotto. And there have been a lot of people in there, no thanks. You know, I didn't have the swim trunks. It wasn't my scene.
Starting point is 00:04:44 But it was fun. They had like a little zoo and good cocktails. And it was a magnificent piece of property. But I'm watching the documentary. And my takeaway is, man, Hugh Hefner's controlling. Can I just say this? Of course I can. The show is part of
Starting point is 00:04:57 called the hurt. Guys that are controlling with women, I think one of the most attractive features of my wife is she has her own life. She has a social life. She has friends. She's like, honey, I'm going to go out tonight with girlfriends. I'll be back. Hugh Heffner was weirdly controlling with all these women.
Starting point is 00:05:16 And it's like, I always find that to be such an appallingly insecure. If you really have confidence in yourself and you really want a vibrant dynamic woman in your life. She doesn't need you when she wakes up in the morning. She likes being with you, but she can create her own reality and life and social circle. And Hugh Heffner was a little weird for my taste. I thought you were talking about the timing of just Hugh Heffner and Playboy in the Playboy Mansion.
Starting point is 00:05:46 It would not stand in today's social environment. So you want to talk about timing. That wouldn't last either. Yeah, I mean, look, people are morbidly insecure. If you feel the need to control the person that you're with, like it's a psychological thing. Seek a therapist. But, yeah, I mean, I don't know.
Starting point is 00:06:03 He was weirdly controlling. Weird. Well, those kind of people, like, they don't, they're getting to this power space where if you're not completely relying on them, then, you know, it's like the whole other thing that's triggered. And, yeah, we could spend about three hours on this. I don't want to control you. Because, you know, sometimes I want to be in my own thoughts.
Starting point is 00:06:23 I don't want your own. Well, I don't understand the psychology of it because if the person is only with you because they have to be with you or because you've manipulated them into thinking that they have to be with you, then they don't really actually want to be with you. So isn't that counteractive to like the purpose of being in a relationship? Like, did you want the person who's with you to want to be with you? I don't know. Well, Sean Payton, the Saints wanted Sean Payton to be with them. And he decided 16 years is enough.
Starting point is 00:06:50 And he stepped down. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports Radio, FS1 and the IHeart Radio app. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the
Starting point is 00:07:16 athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care which I'm saying.
Starting point is 00:07:34 Yep, that's me, Cliver Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, the reactions, my journey from basketball to college football, or my career in sports media. Well, somewhere along the way, this platform became bigger than I ever imagined. And now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifford Show. This is a place for raw, unfiltered conversations with some of your favorite athletes,
Starting point is 00:07:56 creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard, but celebrated. One week, I'll take you behind the scenes of the biggest moments in sports and entertainment, and the next we'll talk about life, mental health, purpose, and even music. The Clifford Show isn't just a podcast, it's a space for honest conversations, stories that don't always get told, and for people who are chasing something bigger. So, if you've ever supported me, or you're just chasing down a dream, this is right where you need to be. Listen to the Clifford show on the IHeart Radio app,

Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tap Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs? Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast.
Starting point is 00:08:46 I'm Sam Jett. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line.
Starting point is 00:09:12 We also have AIDS on the table right now. They're finishing that sentence. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome to my new podcast, Learn the Hard Way with me, your host, and your favorite therapist, Kear Games.
Starting point is 00:09:38 And in recognition of mental health awareness month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience in the mental health field and conversations with so many incredible guests. I'm talking. Trip Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses.
Starting point is 00:10:06 Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth. Are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Kear Gaines, as we have real conversations about healing,

Starting point is 00:10:45 Code heard. Mark Sanchez later this hour. We talk baseball today. We talk Hugh Hefner today. We're not, listen, you can go buy an American newspaper. That's what we're doing here. We start with Hugh Hefner. We work in some Barry Bonds. I just had Emmanuel Ocho and I just had a fascinating argument on Barry Bonds that was worthy of television, but you'll never see it. A lot of the best stuff is in our, it's in the makeup room. It's in the breaks. You know, someday, we should probably broadcast that. You know, I think the fact that there is no broadcasting of those conversations is what makes them better. You're probably right. Joy Taylor with the news.
Starting point is 00:11:27 No, no, no, no, turn on the news. This is the herd line news. Not for being inauthentic, but, you know, sometimes some of the brainstorming goes on off air. We're going to work some of the kinks out. Yeah. And, you know, that's why some talent like to not do too much brainstorming because they might use up the good stuff. I never even thought of that way. I'm not one of those people.
Starting point is 00:11:51 I'm very much like to be prepped. I'm the same way. Think things through before I say, though. So Aaron Rogers said he is not counting out anything regarding his future, but he acknowledged yesterday on the Pat McAfee show that he would take into account DeVante Adams and the Packers needs regarding their own futures. He said, I'd like to be respectful of the organization. one decision that will be upcoming will be obviously Devante and his future with the team. I don't want to put myself on a specific date, but I do want to be sensitive to Devante and many other guys who have decisions to make on their own futures. To drag it out past free agency would be disrespectful and that 100% will not happen.
Starting point is 00:12:23 Well, that's thoughtful. I like that. I like that. Well, you know, I don't, I didn't think that this was what his plan was going to be anyway. I don't even think it will be that long. I think he needs to make a decision and he knows and he needs to make a decision and probably has already made a decision as just being mindful of the timing of announcing it. Okay, Green Bay is not in a rebuild, though. Can we please stop saying that? No, they're not in a rebuild, but a lot could change very quickly. Right, but they've shown a history of drafting and developing. So I trust the Green Bay management. Like, I don't know if they can re-signed Zadaria Smith. Yeah. Very good, but he did that back surgery that scares me. But I don't look at them and think, oh my God, what a whole. They have to get a second dependable receiver.
Starting point is 00:13:03 No, but it does feel like they keep hitting this wall, right? Yeah, is that the organization or Aaron? I don't know, but, you know, if I'm Aaron Rogers, just kind of like ironic thing to say, because I always say I'm not going to think the way that he does. But what is Aaron Rogers goal, right? Like, that's the question. If his goal is Super Bowl, I don't necessarily think he's going to do that in Green Bay.
Starting point is 00:13:26 It just kind of feels like, and you said this the other day, it feels like the Green Bay story is kind of over. Like, I've seen this. I do, I do too. We said this yesterday. The Sean Payton, New Orleans story felt over. in a perfect world, and I say this as somebody that's been critical of Aaron, I would love to see Aaron with the Broncos.
Starting point is 00:13:45 It would be so much fun for him. I think it's a new chapter. Yeah, or I mean, honestly, I think the Colts is a better landing spot. That's a great one. I think you and I, it's pretty well documented. We like new stuff. Yes, and I would like to see Aaron Rogers win another championship. I think that the fact that he only has one isn't really necessarily an indictment of him
Starting point is 00:14:04 or of the organization. but sometimes you just can't seem to make the things work. Championships are hard to win. And he is one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time. Remember, Peyton Manning had a lot of playoff disappointment early and made a move. And then we were like, look at that guy. Now, Brady won both places,
Starting point is 00:14:25 but there is an argument to be made that Aaron's Green Bay career would be a Hall of Famer. If Aaron went to Denver tomorrow and played for six years, do you doubt that he would put up another career that would be like a Barry Bond's pirate career, almost a Hall of Fame career beyond the San Francisco Giants or beyond the Packers. No, I don't. I think he could do that. He's only 38 years old.
Starting point is 00:14:48 Yeah. I mean, he still has plenty of football left if he wants it. It's just a matter of like what is his motivation at this point? What is his goal at this point? If it's just to keep playing football and have a lot of control and, you know, win the division and, you know, have some moderate playoff success. I just, I don't know if I can see it in Green Bay anymore.
Starting point is 00:15:04 I've seen this story time and time and time again, and it's just they're never able to get over the home. I think what you're saying is, and I thought about this when they lost Saturday night, I honestly thought this. I think we've seen the best version of Green Bay's roster. Yeah. I don't think it can get better unless they just hit a couple of wild home runs in the draft. Right. Like when you look at that roster, where you're like, where's the gaping hole? There isn't.
Starting point is 00:15:26 And there's also, you know, they're not going to draft at a good enough spot where they're going to get a, you know, the Iowa center or the left tax. from Alabama or the pass rusher from Michigan. Like I don't see a transformational player in the draft they'll get, nor do I think, well, they can't afford free agents with Aaron and Devante's salary. The one thing I do not like about the NFL, and I think the NFL's always made rules to benefit the league. I hate the franchise tag on quarterbacks. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:15:54 I think you can use it on other, I do not like it. I think it's totally unfair to Aaron Rogers and quarterbacks that I essentially have to give you about 10 years. Even in the NBA, I can leave after four. Yeah. And I just feel like it's unfair that you can keep franchising, franchise. Aaron, to a large degree, because Aaron doesn't have a no trade clause. Russell Wilson does. Aaron's kind of trapped. He's either going to retire or be a Packer because Well, I mean, I think he can force his way out. Like, we've seen that with superstars now that they have the ability to do that. But as far as the timing of it goes, I do think he respects Devonte Adams. I do think he respects his teammates to know that this is not a situation that you can.
Starting point is 00:16:34 can drag out for months and months. And also, teams have salary caps and the draft and free agency and they have to know what direction that they're going. And if they're going to have Aaron Rogers on their team or not, they have to account for that. So I do think this is going to happen rather quickly. And free agency in the new league year starts on March 16th. So Bengals kicker, Evan McPherson became the unlikely hero of the postseason. God, that kid is a rookie kicker. Ice in his veins. And just, just, he's like burrow. Crazy confident. Well, according to the The Cincinnati Inquirer, his jersey is completely sold out. The team's pro shops said that they will not be getting anymore anytime soon,
Starting point is 00:17:09 and they have also run out of blank jerseys for customization for his name and number. He made eight field goals on eight attempts in the postseason. He was a fifth round pick in 2021. So Cincinnati Bengals fans are 11 on McPherson right now, and it's a nice fun story for the post season. What a great story for them. I love it. So USC fans have been watching and waiting to see if Caleb Williams will announce a transfer to the school.
Starting point is 00:17:32 Time out. Time out. What's going on? I don't have breaking. What is that? I didn't hear about this. It's not breaking news. It's not breaking news. Okay. Lincoln Riley said yesterday that it's possible the school could add some more transfers this week. NCAA rules prohibit him about speaking about individual recruits. But he said the Trojans have a few more on the transfer side and a couple from the high school side who may decide to enroll early.
Starting point is 00:17:57 Obviously, Caleb Williams played last season with Riley at Oklahoma and the transfer portal on January. Okay, because I have no life. I know. So they're going to get another offensive lineman transfer and another defensive line transfer. They'd like another linebacker and a safety. I don't care about any of that stuff. Get Caleb Williams in house. Well, you can't officially talk about it.
Starting point is 00:18:15 He just alluded to there's a few more transfers that are on the way. The last day to register ad classes for the spring semester at USC is Friday. So if we're going to find out. Oh, time out. Friday is the deadline. Oh, boy. And I heard some nonsense that Caleb William is considering Wisconsin. I mean, Wisconsin's a fine school. What's wrong with Wisconsin?
Starting point is 00:18:35 For quarterbacks? If you want to go play for Jim Leonard on the defensive side, I'm all for it. He should go to two places. USC's number one, obviously. Number two would be stay at Oklahoma. Russell Wilson did a pretty good job at Wisconsin. Russell Wilson's a top. He's the only great quarterback in Wisconsin history. I'm just trolling you. Come on out that way, Caleb. I'll give you free burgers at Herd Burger. You probably can't actually. I'm a big booster.
Starting point is 00:19:05 Very powerful. I can give you free burgers. Joy with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The herd lie news. So it's so funny, I told you, if Caleb, if I get information that Caleb Williams is signing, I'm going to put up two fight-ons.
Starting point is 00:19:20 If I just put up one fight on, it means we got just like another transfer. So I'm not, but I am every single day I'm on this. It's nerve-wracking. And I, listen, if he doesn't. come to USC, let's just fold the program up and just, you know what, play volleyball and just no more football, the glory days of Sanchez, that's it, I don't want to talk about it. And let's bring in Mark Sanchez, Fox Sports NFL analyst. By the way, here's a piece of information I did not know. This is fascinating.
Starting point is 00:19:47 Do you get two fight on? One fight on. But two for Caleb? He's new and fresh. The kid hasn't done anything in the colseum yet. NASCAR is going to have a start before that guy. And he gets two. Okay, we got issues, Colin. Let's go. I didn't know this. Your playoff stats are fascinating.
Starting point is 00:20:06 They're not bad. You have a 94 passer rating in the playoffs, nine TDs, three picks, and a four-and-two career playoff record. You should have told the Jets by year three, I will only do playoff games. If I could go back and... So let me say this. I think everybody would say that, though.
Starting point is 00:20:20 If I could only go back. So you know Stafford well. I thought it was really cool. The ship is leaking. No timeout. 40 seconds. I feel like on the Rams had this thought, like I thought, watching the game. And this is just an opinion.
Starting point is 00:20:39 I don't know this for a fact, but dang it. We're going to be a chapter in the book in Tom Brady's book. And that's the day he came back from his second best postseason comeback, because obviously 28 to 3 would have been better than 273. But his second best playoff comeback of all time, and the Los Angeles Rams are just a little footnote in that book on how he came back and did it. I guarantee that crossed their mind.
Starting point is 00:21:05 Okay? But to me, to know your opponent is really important, to call the right play at the right time, really important. To execute that play at the right time is really important. Okay? All three of those things came together on their last two plays. So check this out.
Starting point is 00:21:23 The last play, when you go back and watch it, the last play, Cooper Cup puts a DB in the body bag and puts them on the ground, catches the ball, gets out of bounds. stops the clock. Todd Bulls. You stop the clock, like a lot of coordinators, in two-minute scenarios, because everybody's always like,
Starting point is 00:21:39 oh, why do you move the ball so well in two-minute at the end of the game? Why don't you just do that all game? Well, it's not really the same. You don't get the same coverages and same looks all the time. But when that clock is stopped, either because of a timeout, ball goes out of bounds, whatever reason, when the clock stopped, they can organize a pressure, right? And it all comes back to communication.
Starting point is 00:21:58 And I can hear my teacher at USC, Ken Serino, the professor, everything's communication, even if you're not talking, it's communication, because it's non-communication, right? And I had this thought, like, they didn't get it communicated, and the Rams did. They had a play on that had answers for all-out pressure, which could be a possibility because they studied their opponent, they called the right play, and they executed the right play at the right time. So they have the deep shot to Cooper if they bring the house, which they tried to do, but because of failed communication, didn't get it communicated.
Starting point is 00:22:33 They don't have enough bodies. The Rams still turned the A gap loose. And in Dominic's, breathing down Stafford's neck, and he delivers that ball? Are you kidding me? Colin, that was like, that was like,
Starting point is 00:22:45 I mean, anything you want to nerd out on football, I was losing my mind. Acho was at my house, and we were watching these games, and I was going nuts running around. Right. Like, so excited for Stafford because it all happened at once.
Starting point is 00:22:58 And when you go back and watch it and realize all the things that had to happen for that to fall into place, it's unbelievable. That's why last weekend was the best weekend of football I've ever seen, maybe in my life. I want to talk about the 49ers, because they did something. The middle of the field, it used to be when I was mostly growing up,
Starting point is 00:23:18 the way to score quickly in the NFL was the sidelines. The middle was the defense. Troy Polamalu, Ed Reed, Ronny Lott. Most receivers did not even want to go over the middle of the field. And then the NFL loosened up the rules. A quarterback can run in the middle of the field. You can't touch him. Can't touch anybody.
Starting point is 00:23:33 You can't hit the receivers. So the middle of the field now is, it's the offenses. Sure. And I'm watching Garapolo. He really, because he doesn't have a huge arm, he really, overwhelmingly, he's throwing it right in the middle of the field. And I do want you to explain to the audience, there's more arms up, there's more pressure, there's more things that can go wrong. You know, on the sideline, it's a lot of bodies.
Starting point is 00:24:00 A lot. And I don't think Which is why the bills should have put a lot of bodies in the middle of the field and also deep squib, but we can go back to that later. Let's talk for you. I think Garoppolo deserves more credit. Those are hard throws. They're hard throws.
Starting point is 00:24:12 They are precision, not just accuracy throws, but you've got to put it on guys a little too high and that's where he's gotten in trouble. Anything high over the middle. Tipped? I mean, face mask and higher, that thing's tipped. And it becomes a drill that D.Bs do in practice every day to warm up and they tip the ball up to each other to get used to it.
Starting point is 00:24:32 So then, you know, you're forced to hit guys in a strike zone, and if you hit them too low, that ball might get batted at the line of scrimmage. So those are important, I think, because of the offense that they run, because of his skill set, they do a lot of middle triangle stuff, which is, you know, a 12-yard basic, some sort of crossing shallows or the back. But basically, it's like, think of triangle offense in basketball, but in the middle of the field. And now you're trying to manipulate defenders with your eyes, with your body movement, with your shoulders to get them to go one way to hit a throw right behind them.
Starting point is 00:25:07 And those oblique stretches on linebackers, that's tough, man, because now you're getting these linebackers like Fred Warner and, you know, Levanti David and all these guys who are really rangy, athletic. And, I mean, they got long limbs and they're all over the place, let alone all the defensive linemen breathing down your neck and the A-gaps, putting hands up. up, the JJ Watts of the world that just matumbo you so fast. It's, it's hard. It's not easy. There's a lot of bodies, a lot of traffic to manage, and your eyes got to be solid, and then you've got to anticipate. You can't be late, right?
Starting point is 00:25:41 Nothing late over the middle, because guys gobble up those windows like that. They close too fast. Yeah. It is, we were talking about Joe Burrow. Oh, I got some juice on Joe. So one of the things that disappointed me with Aaron this weekend wasn't the loss. is that I didn't think he was daring enough. And I thought Stafford was daring.
Starting point is 00:26:01 Mahomes was daring. Alan was daring. Burrow was daring. I took a shot downfield to Adams. Somebody else opened. But my point was, after the Mercedes-Lewis fumble, Aaron went three-and-out, three-and-out, no yards. He didn't want to go back to tight ends.
Starting point is 00:26:14 And in playoff games, you have to trust players. So think about this. Burl got sack nine times. He got the living, you know what kicked out of him. Yeah. And he never checked out. He's like, I got to make plays. We're on the road.
Starting point is 00:26:31 Right. I thought Burrow played more daring football than almost anybody I saw this weekend. Yes. And you can go overboard with that, right? I mean, one more, there were a couple close sack fumbles there. I mean, we're talking an inch away where he happened to move the ball and that big old defensive lineman pause coming to knock it out. but he takes nine sacks and then to get up and not allow your eyes to drop and look at the rush.
Starting point is 00:27:04 You talked about that last week. That was crazy to me. I'm like, how's this guy hanging in there like that? I mean, he's just taking body blows and body blows and body blows. And he doesn't even flinch. That blew my mind. That is something in between his ears that not a lot of people can get to, a place where not a lot of people can get to. Silence.
Starting point is 00:27:24 I mean, you got to ask him. And I told you, he's a different cat. Like, he's got this incredible focus to him. Incredible mental strength and fortitude. Like, this guy's going to make it work. And he hopes you doubt him. And not many guys can do what he did. But like I said, just getting back up nine times, like, again, again, again.
Starting point is 00:27:48 And standing in there after an ACL injury last year, after an injury, like, I just remember rehabbing my shoulder and being terrified to fall on it, falling awkwardly on purpose so I could land on the other shoulder, just because between your ears it's not healed. He's something special, but I just thought, I thought it was interesting after that game that they played in week, what, 17 against the Chiefs,
Starting point is 00:28:15 Bengals Chiefs. So that's when Jamar Chase sets the record. He scores three touchdowns. Joe Burroughs 30 of 39 for 446 and 4. four touchdowns. And then Mahomes after is known for saying, hey, to Jamar Chase, like you're a hell of a player. Keep it up.
Starting point is 00:28:31 We'll see in the playoffs. Like, whoa, how about that? How about that for leading into this weekend? You know, they can't go into it allowing nine sacks. Like, that just can't happen this week. Yeah. But they're going to have their work cut out for him. I just don't think Joe's, he's not worried at all.
Starting point is 00:28:50 And not in an arrogant, cocky way. It's just he's supreme. confident and he's special. I want to talk about, there's nine coaching openings, and I had said this years ago when I worked at the other place, I thought, I think it was year three with you and Rex Ryan. I said, and I said this on the air at the time, I said Rex Ryan is now hurting Mark Sanchez. He doesn't understand the sensibility. Rex is very alpha, very kind of blue collar. I said, Mark's a California kid. You have to understand your quarterback in the tempo and his personality. And so I want to get to this in a second.
Starting point is 00:29:23 I'll take a break. I worry about all these defensive coaches because I do think we're in a different time and the franchise is overwhelmingly. Quarterbacks were important. Now they're everything. I mean, you can't win seemingly without it. And I want to talk about that coming up next with Mark.

Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode,
Starting point is 00:32:19 with Mark Lamont Hill waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack all day, but just so you all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you for finishing that sentence. Yes.
Starting point is 00:32:43 I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome to my new podcast, Learn the Hardway with me, your host, and your favorite therapist, Keer Games. And in recognition of mental health awareness month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience in the mental health field and conversations with so many incredible guests.
Starting point is 00:33:10 I'm talking, Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we, are in possession of the thing, and we're still chasing it, and we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth, or are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely.
Starting point is 00:33:39 And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Kear Gaines, is we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast, learn the hard way. Starting point is 00:33:56 and listen now. Nick's Heat, Discover Card Key matchup, Discover Exceptionally Common Sense. Mark Sanchez joining us. So, Mark, you had, Chip Kelly was one of your offensive coaches.
Starting point is 00:34:06 You had a lot of defensive coaches in Rex Ryan. There's nine coaching openings, and I have said before, I think when you get young quarterbacks, there is a sensibility, I understand offense, I understand your psychology.
Starting point is 00:34:18 I thought Rex, I say this because I think Rex is a great defensive coach. I thought by year three, I said this on the air at the other place, I thought he was hurting you. I thought you were building, building, building. And by middle of the third year, I was like, I don't know if Rex is helping Mark or hurting him. And so my takeaway is I would hire an offensive coach because it's become more of an
Starting point is 00:34:36 offensive league and a quarterback league. So take me to Chip Kelly, your offensive coach. You had a very good year there. What is he doing that a defensive coach doesn't do? I just think there's, um, there's, There's such a difference in just fundamentals, offensively and defensively. Defensively, you know, a guy can miss a gap
Starting point is 00:34:57 and somebody else can make the tackle and make this amazing play. Can pick the ball off, like Dorel Revis, picks a ball off and returns her for a touchdown when two guys missed the gap assignment or whatever. Or guys lined up in the wrong spot or there's an uncovered receiver or whatever. It's more of like we could play this out on the field
Starting point is 00:35:14 or we can go fight you in the parking lot. We don't really care. We're here to kick your ass. Right. That's a little more of a defensive mentality, especially with Rex. And it's awesome. It's so cool. For an offensive guy who's used to, you know, these so many rules and 11 of 11 have to do it right.
Starting point is 00:35:31 Yes. Because these plays are designed to go for big yards and score every single time. So everybody has to get it right. Every play that doesn't, you know, reach its max potential, at least one or two players missed. They either whiffed on a block. They made the wrong call. The quarterback missed the throw. the wrong read, you know, check to the wrong play.
Starting point is 00:35:51 There are so many things that have to go right. And that's why you get these coordinators that just, you know, when Mahomes was going through his struggles, it's like, okay, we can't pressure the guy because he beats us and they have too many weapons. Let's just wait for them to screw it up because they have to do it right. 11 guys, down after down after down, get a first down, take it all the way down the field and score a touchdown. Good luck.
Starting point is 00:36:14 Give them a third down from the seven-yard line and see if you can fit a ball in there. Good luck. I like the defensive chances. You know what I'm saying? Yeah, yeah. So it's just a different mentality. And it's like that with schedule, you know, traveling. Are you wearing suits?
Starting point is 00:36:29 Are you, you know, what time are we going to be there? What's the message to the team? It's just different. It's, you know, there's a lot more rules, I feel like, on offense. Yeah. And a lot more structure, I should say. Yeah. But, you know, I still loved for our team,
Starting point is 00:36:44 especially those first couple years, Rex's attitude. And, you know, his idea was to take on the media blitz and, like, handle it on his shoulders and kind of deflected away from the team. But, you know, when you say some of those things, now we got to back it up, which is fine. I mean, it was, it was fine. And that third year was statistically my best year. But after that year, we lost Shottie, switched up coordinators, switched up a bunch of stuff. So it just, you know, things change. That's the way it goes.
Starting point is 00:37:15 So, Sean Payton. 58. I look at that and I think he's going to do TV for a while. I don't even know for a while, but he's in a great spot of all these guys. But go ahead. He's just too twitchy intellectually to go sit on a beach. There's no way. He's going to keep himself busy. Did you do a Saints game this year? Yes. Okay. So you've been, what's it like to meet him?
Starting point is 00:37:36 He's the best. He's always got energy, always got juice. He's positive. You could tell. He's thinking situations constantly. That's an offensive trait, you know. but I mean the guy can go do TV for a year make anywhere from $10 to $15 million and then go right back and coach somewhere else like you know maybe goes and coaches the Cowboys he could go coach like a legitimate contender in one year like let the let the dust settle a little bit kind of like Bruce Ariens just leave you know by the way take a year off get some yeah exactly just go just go relax for a little bit take a breath people don't understand this Um, it's exhausting to coach in the league.
Starting point is 00:38:20 I mean, I've had coaches say, man, like, I sleep three hours a night. Oh, those. A lot. You would like, I would be concerned for the health of our coaches because they eat pizza all the time. They never see daylight unless we're out at practice. And if you're in the East Coast, it's like gray every day and it's freezing. You never get any exercise. You never see your family.
Starting point is 00:38:41 It is one of the toughest jobs around, but it's so rewarding. That's why they do it. they love it. Like once you're in, you're in and it's tough to get out of it unless you're somebody like Sean Payton. And don't like, I think it's important for people to understand or respect what he did to have that team even sniffing the playoffs this year. The New Orleans Saints sniffing the playoffs in that last game. If the Rams held the lead. Exactly. And the Rams should have won that game. So they should have been in the playoffs. But the fact that he had them knocking on the door of the playoffs is insane. If you told any coach before the year,
Starting point is 00:39:16 four quarterbacks. You're going through four quarterbacks. Your starters down. You're not going to see Mike Thomas anymore. Remember that guy who made all those plays? He's gone. You have to relocate to Dallas. Yes. You're running back. He's going to be out for about four or five weeks and you're going to go on a five game losing streak. Like, nobody would have signed up for that job except Sean Payton.
Starting point is 00:39:32 And he would have walked in that thing like, yeah, I got it. I'll figure it out. That's who he is. And that's like this aura he has around him. He's an impressive dude. 40 seconds left. You're watching Mahomes and Allen. As a former NFL player, what did you make of it? I don't. understand how we don't go deep squib.
Starting point is 00:39:48 Number one, squib kick where you don't kick it out of the back of the end zone. Make them fair catch it at the five or the ten and make them go even farther to get a field goal. Next, you've got to treat those plays like a third and 15, third and 20. They have timeouts. You don't have to play outside leverage on Kelsey worried about him stopping the clock. They can stop the clock anytime they want. Get on him.
Starting point is 00:40:09 Go hold the guy. Go get a penalty just to waste time because the clock's going to keep running. it stops for a second and then it'll keep going. I just thought there were so many options for the bills on defense, and it just broke my heart because Josh Allen won that game like three times. Yeah, I didn't like it. Tony Romo said that. He goes, I don't like you kicking it to the end zone.
Starting point is 00:40:31 Waste four and a half seconds. At least, just give them less opportunities. Go take the penalty. I don't know. I just, but I mean, listen, my homes play his butt off too. I can't. Mark Sanchez, great stuff. All right, I think we're done talking for today.
Starting point is 00:40:44 Very exhausting. You know, this job is, like an NFL coach. Oh my God. No resting. It's exhausting. Dealing with me. See you tomorrow.
