Howie longs the Hall of Famer, eight-time pro bowler, 13 years, all of the Raiders. We'll get to their new hiring in a second. You know, I look at that RAM team.

And, you know, in the NBA, a lot of times it's driven by stars. Stars often win titles. There's nothing wrong with that. But the NFL has always been sort of like, you know, you got one or two guys, but it's a community, you can't be bad, it guard or everything has to work. And so the Rams decided we're not going to get, we're not going to pick in the first round.

We're going to go get guys and give up first round. Nobody else is doing this model. Are you a little surprise it has worked? Think about all the pressure that Sean makes less need and you know, Stan Cronky builds a $5 billion stadium.

And I think he certainly made it abundantly clear that he He wanted the team in the Super Bowl in his own stadium. I think they made the choice that they were going to win now. And they weren't good. I think the last time they had a first round pick, Barack Obama was in office. You know, that just tells you something about their philosophy.

Less need that group, Chal McFay, they pushed their chips into the center. And, you know, I think Matthew Stafford has come up big. He's as advertised. and Odell certainly, you know, at first was kind of a slow to assimilate to their team. And they figured him out. He figured them out. And over 100 yards yesterday. And, you know, they had that all day.

They were playing off coverage. And Cup is, does he push a space ghost button and just disappear? Why is he not cover? And I think the big key was, you know, these two teams know each other. And it was going to be a slob knocker game. And, you know, I think Kiddell talked about it being a bodyback game. And, you know, that hit that Debo Samuel took, he might be seriously, Colin, I've seen a lot of tough people over the years.

And he's one of the toughest people I've seen. Yeah. They rely on him a great deal. But they took the run game away, which is something that they struggled to do versus the Niners in previous matchups. And they put it on Jimmy Garoppolo's shoulders. and you know you're going to get a little bit of this a little bit of that and in jimmy's defense you know he's playing with a shoulder he's playing with a thumb that's right and you know he's not

complaining you know and people who play with him my son chris played with him and to a guy in that locker room they love jimmy grott and and he's come up big in big situations but at the end of the game you know erin donald who have been quiet and i think san francisco does a big job you know doubling him and keeping him kind of on his heels a little bit, had the big play at the end of the game, which I was happy for him. What do we make, listen, this stuff is long, it's a long road.

I think Mahomes was so spectacular to start. We all kind of freaked out and gave nine Super Bowls, and it's like Peyton Manning's fourth year was rough. Brady got hurt, missed a year. Farr had a really bad year at one point in his career. and I look at Mahomes and I'm like, no, this is the way it works. This is the way it works.

You have really bad halves and you lose playoff games at home. And I don't take much from it. I'm like, we can beat up Andy Reid for the play calling, but I'm like, listen, man, look at the AFC. You have all these superstar young quarterbacks. Like, this is what we're going to see with him. A Super Bowl, a loss, a home loss.

I don't think anything negative about the Chiefs today, do you? No, I think I would have liked to have seen the pass rush get home more. particularly after Tennessee with nine sacks and 13 hits. You know, my anticipation was that they would get there more. Let's not forget, Patrick Mahomes threw five touchdowns in the wildcard run. Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen put on one of the greatest quarterback shows I've ever seen. I was at the stadium. It was amazing.

In 13 seconds, you know, Joy mentioned the time out. and I agree. And that's a credit to Andy Reid. You know, I mean, versus Dallas. Dallas has got more time. They have no timeouts. And you're in that situation for a reason. But I think we can't, you know, read too much into it.

I think this is an offense that is used to being dynamic. Patrick Cohones is so confident, so uber talented that he thinks he can do anything. And I get that and appreciate that. The call, I don't necessarily disagree with the call. I think what they would want him to do, and I think if Patrick had it back, Patrick could throw the ball on the ground and kick the field goal, not getting points right before the half.

You know, one, and Jimmy and I talk about this all the time, it's that momentum at the end of the half. And I think that kind of gave Cincinnati a little bit more life going into the second half. So your Raiders did not go with the interim coach. And some interim coaches have been huge. hits. Some have failed. Some like Mike Tyson, Wayne Fawns have been fine. They've not been great, but they've been very

solid. So there is no interim coach always works or always fails. People can say that. It's just simply not true. We looked it up last week. I do like this. I do like offensive coach with Derek Carr, because my contention is Derek's always been way better than people think.

He's a top 12 quarterback, and I think if you've got one of those top 12 quarterbacks, you can win a Super Bowl. your takeaway on the Raiders hire? Well, I think Josh McDaniel is a great hire right now. And I think people were overly critical of his time in Denver. And I think if he had to do it over again, and I think this is something that he's discussed in great detail with Bill,

is he tried to do too much. And I think taking his personnel guy from New England is a big key, it allows him to just function on and focus on the things that are important. And I think not only an offensive coach coming in, but a guy who's been in New England under Bill Belichick for all these years. And just through, you know, sheer minutes in the meeting rooms on the practice field and situational football. And I think that's exciting for Derek Carr,

because I think the offense will fit him. and I think he'll take his game to another level. The offensive line was a real problem this year, and Josh Jacobs got beat up. And I think they have to address the offensive line, and I think once they do that, Josh Jacobs is a dynamic running back, he's physical. He has a lot of that Debo Samuel in him,

where he's just so a willing participant in contact, and that's hard to find. Listen, I think Brady's retiring. I think he wants to control the retirement announcement, but people I trust have said, you know, Tom's decided to close it out, which I'm, listen, I like the fact that he's closing out like Elway or Roger Staubach, where he's really still outstanding. He's not limping into the sunset. It's, you know, the Derek Jeter model, which is you got more, but it's time. I'm very comfortable with it.

I look at him as that's the way I wish my star is all retired. If he does retire, it's not official yet. How surprised are you? I'm not surprised. You know, when I made the choice to retire, you know, the biggest factor was my family. And I had an eight-year-old that, you know, I obviously lived with and functioned with, but, you know, and was a father to. But, you know, and it was Chris. And I wanted to have a better relationship and wanted to be a bigger part of that.

And I'll never regret that. And you coach little league baseball for seven years. You coach high school football for seven, eight years. And those are the, that's the time that, because as you know, Colin, it flies by. Yeah. And pretty soon they got a driver's license. They're pulling out of the gate and they're gone. And I respect him for that.

To me, the thing that, you know, in trying to define Tom, what he did, Tampa Bay was he he lifted an entire organization to a level of excellence that, you know, they haven't had in years. And I think he raised the coaching staff's level of, you know, performance. Every single person on that football team was held accountable. And he took a bit of New England with him. And I go back to that because the 1920 years he spent in New England, I think is what defines his career. And, you know, that relationship with Bill, it was always kind of a little bit in the gray area. And, you know, do they like one another?

Do they go for long walks on the beach? I don't think so. But when it comes down to football preparation and all of that in performance and leaving no stone on turn, I think Tom and Bill were mirror images of one another from football. Yeah, no, I absolutely agree. All right, Howie, Lolloy, well, you raised pretty good kids. So you and your wife.

they've got a good mama. Well, dad's pretty good too. Dad's pretty good to you. Listen, you work that long with Bradshaw and keep him in line. That's all I need to know. One of those years are dog years, Colin. No question with Terry. Great seeing out, the Hall of Famer Howie Long.

To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so you all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you for finishing that sentence. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really?

All right, joy with the news. No, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. Well, I believe I was in the building to watch Jimmy Garapolo's last game with the 49ers.

Now, it was about 70-30-90 fans, you think? It was heavy-nine. It didn't look like it at first. When the game began, I was like, it's about 50-50. But you know what, Joy, I was thinking about this. When you told me that this morning, people forget this. If you don't live on the West Coast, you may not know this or if you're young. How big the Niners are.

So forget the Garoppolo's years. Right. forget the Harbaugh years, Super Bowl. Yes. Forget the Steve Young years, Super Bowl. Forget the Joe Montana years. In the 60s and 70s,

they had a quarterback named John Brody, who, by the way, went from the NFL to the senior tour and won a tournament on the PGA. But people forget this. When I was a kid growing up, and I hadn't watched TV yet, I started in about 71, 72.

John Brody, I think I could be wrong. I know he was a multiple time Pro Bowl I think he led the NFL in passing in like 1973. So the Niners, the Rams got to Los Angeles 15 minutes ago from St. Louis. The Niners have been good on the West Coast since the 60s. So they're

fan base. If I go somewhere, if I go hiking somewhere over the summer, I'm on lakes, you'll see Niners gear everywhere. It is a huge brand. Cornerstone franchise for the NFL. And it's also not

that far away from Los Angeles. Los Angeles is a very transient town. There are large pockets of NFL fans from different organizations here in L.A. And we've seen that throughout the regular season, the Steelers game. This is what happens with the Chargers. Like, not only are both those teams, the Chargers and the Rams, relatively new back to Los Angeles, but there's a lot of people here that are fans of other teams, especially San Francisco. So it wasn't terribly surprising.

And listen, it was loud the whole game regardless. So it wasn't like there was like a particular advantage, because of the fan bases being there. No, the two fan bases on the West Coast, the Raiders and the Niners, in the, I think it was the 80s. You could not go anywhere in the West Coast or in the football season and not see a gold Niner jacket. Remember those? Yes, there were a lot of them there last night.

Okay. It's like, yeah, those are classic. So it's like on the West Coast, it's never been a Rams Coast or a Seahawks Coast or a Chargers Coast. It's been a Raider and 49er coast for my life. Yeah, those starter jackets. Yeah. Well, Kyle Shanahan would not publicly say goodbye. to Jimmy G when he was asked

about the quarterback's future with the team. I love Jimmy. I'm not going to sit here and make a farewell statement or anything right now. It's the last stuff on my mind. But Jimmy has battled his ass off. He battled today. He did some unbelievable things today and I love coaching Jimmy. It feels

like I know Niners fans are upset today and Niners fans are very, they've mixed emotions about Jimmy Garoppolo because I think the the Niners organization clearly loves Jimmy Garoppolo, and he's done a tremendous job, despite the fact that they moved up to get Trey Lance with a 12th overall pick,

a first and a third round pick in 2022, and a first round pick in 2023 to move up to get Trey Lance, which would be difficult for anyone to deal with. He's done, he has gone above and beyond this year, which is why everyone, including Kyle Shanahan, talks about him the way that he does, John Lynch, and like, he's loved in that locker. He could have been a complete brat.

Yes. And he played through. injuries and that's like that's part of the game obviously no one's healthy at this point in the season if you look like jimmy garoppolo we're rich and that good looking i've never once thought what a what a temperament he has good parents he's a good kid yes that's a good i mean like a lot of things have not gone his way and he has just head down i don't know who his parents are but somebody at home deserves credit too because he could have been he could have made this a nightmare for the franchise

Absolutely. Leak stuff to the press. And I think that that has gone a long way for Jimmy is for what he's going to do next year as well because we all know what his injury issues are. He was hurt yesterday. Yeah, there's nothing that he can get away from. Like, that is what it is.

But the way that he's handled himself this year has been tremendous. I'm looking forward to seeing what he does next year. And like I've been saying through this whole season, every once in a while, sports gives us an amazing opportunity to play out the, you know, theories that we have. we do a lot of the stuff on debate shows. We're like, what if this or who would you take? Well, we're going to get to see Jimmy G with another team next year,

and we're going to get to see Traillians with this roster. That is 100% going to happen. They're not going to announce it right now. It'll take a few days to breathe this through. But once I get sorted out, we're going to get to see. I would, Pittsburgh Steelers, I'd give up a first round pick if I had to do for Jimmy Garoppolo. Duane Haskin stays as the backup.

And I don't have to give away personnel. I think they'd ideally like to give a second round pickup. That's his value because of injuries. They'll probably because it'll be a viable market for Jimmy at least two teams. You give up a first. And if Aaron stays and I'm Denver, I get on the phone tomorrow. Of course. They have, Denver's a plate.

Now, you say to yourself, well, he'd be the fourth best quarterback in that division. Probably. You have the fourth best quarterback in the division now. He's much better than what you got now. By a lot, maybe. Yeah. Look, the quarterback market is going to be bleak this offseason because it's not a good quarterback draft. Now, we don't know what any of these quarterbacks in the draft will end up being, but none of them are, there is no consensus number one overall pick quarterback or any prospect that anyone is running and raving about.

So it's just not this draft. Now next year it will be different. But if you're in a bridge situation or a win now situation, we all know Jimmy has a ceiling. Like we've seen it. We saw it last night. Yeah. But he's going to win you games and he's going to end up somewhere with. that has a roster and needs a quarterback.

And I think the Niners will do right by him as well. I don't think they're going to send him to a team that's in a complete rebuild. So the Raiders are reportedly expected to hire Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels as their next head coach, just discussing this with Howie. This comes after the team announced that they hired Patriots, director of player personnel, Dave Ziegler, as their GM. This will be McDaniel's second stint at head coach after going 11 and 17, two seasons with the Broncos.

He also accepted the Colts job in 2018. but we all know how that played out. They ended up staying in New England's. I guess I'm optimistic about this. I do like that they went together, similar to how the Giants hired Brian Dable and Jason. It matters. I do think you need to be aligned with the GM.

I think they got an offensive coach that I'm good with. I think the Denver, by the way, Denver looked at the division and went, we got to score points. The Raiders looked at the division and went, we got to score points. I think the Raiders need upgrades. on some personnel, though. That's what it is with Derrick Carr.

He's, Derek Carr's been just similar to Jimmy G. Just unbelievable character-wise, leader, winner, despite some really difficult situations. Obviously, Jimmy G, not so much. But completely dysfunctional there with the Raiders. Now they've made a big move. So at least they'll have some stability

for the next couple years. So Joe's Burroughs, Joe Burroughs outfit before the NFC title game yesterday, made some rounds on social media. You know, he's been pulling out the looks, Colin. Yeah. I don't know. I think I'm going to get you some of these Joe Burrow glasses.

I think it would be a good look for you. They are kind of cool. Yeah. I think a lot of people think of me as cool. I think that goes unsaid. Yes, there you are. I think you could pull that look off, especially the chain, the J.B.9 chain, which he discussed during his post-game press conference when a reporter asked him about his jewels. Let's be honest.

Joe, being a good reporter, I've got to ask about the jewels, are they real? And what are they? They're definitely real. I think I make too much money to have fake ones, so these are real. How much would that cost? How much would that cost? Oh, I don't know. I'm not in the...

Like $100,000. I'm not in the diamond buying... I mean, if those are real diamonds, that's got to be $300,000. I bought my wife a necklace for Christmas, and it was very thin, skinny, and it was expensive. And I'm not going to get into it. But I look at that and I think that's $300,000. dollars? It's probably a nice house. Oh my God. In Cincinnati.

It's a nice house in Cincinnati. It's not a nice house here. Why would he have a fake chain on? I don't know. But this is what everyone loves about Joe Burrell. Like he is very... Nameth. Nameth. He's very Nameth-esque. He's very unapologetically himself in an embraceable way. And when you're also winning, that can very much be embraced by everyone. I think that this Super Bowl,

feels like one that fans can just enjoy without any animosity. There's no villain in this. It's such a great story that Matthew Stafford is having this opportunity after all this time in the league to really show what he's really capable of. And Joe Burrow coming in the league after being injured last year. Like when you really put the perspective of what he's done with this team,

So Aaron's not going somewhere. He said at one point he'd go to New Orleans. He's not going there now without Sean Payton. People said he would go. He said he would go to Chicago.

Well, they have Justin Fields. So a lot of these teams, DAC now is signed. Raiders, Derek Carr, you're not bailing on him. So the four teams he said he'd go to, they're all tied up with their quarterbacks. Buy seller hold. Mike McCarthy finishes the season as the Cowboys coach. Buy, bye, bye, bye, bye.

They're going to win games next year. It's a terrible division. So they're going to be a playoff team. And Jerry Jones said it's not on the table. If they were in the NFC West or the AFC West and they got off to a three and five start. But in that division, Daniel Jones, Jalen Hertz, Taylor Heineke, they're just, they're too talented.

and Dax's going to be now healthy. So I just, I think they're going to end up being, again, an 11, 10, 11, 12-win team. He's not going to get fired. Buy seller-hold. Jim Harbaugh will be an NFL coach. That's an absolute buy. Bye, bye, bye, bye. He didn't like the Michigan pig.

By the way, four years of the Niners, folks, he was 4419 and one. So he is a really good coach. And I think he's going to wait to take the right job. He interviewed for the Vikings. job joy over the weekend. He's very close with their new general manager. And I also think, again, he's 58, he feels 48, he's just boundless energy. I do not think Michigan is the final destination. I wouldn't be surprised if he came back. But I mean, when you look at Jim Harbaugh, does he feel like a staying there forever guy? He doesn't to me. I think he wants a new challenge

pretty soon. Buy seller hold, Joe Burrow will win the MVP. Well, sell for now, because the votes are already in. So you don't get to count the wins against the Titans and the win against Kansas City. And I do think Aaron Rogers, despite the postseason, was number one, and Brady is two. He'll finish third. I said, if I had a vote, I would have voted Burrow win because I think people confused, and I said this three weeks ago, people just don't think about what valuable means. Zach Taylor was 625 and one pre-burrow.

This is a bad all line. I mean, the Packers have won a lot with and without Aaron Rogers for years. years and years. Now, he's obviously valuable, but he doesn't have the cheapest owner in the league. He's in a division that's incredibly competent. I think what Burroughs done is remarkable, but he's not going to win the MVP this year. Buy seller hold, the NFL will change the overtime rules. I go back on hold sell. Say sell for now. By the way, if you count regular season in overtime, under the current overtime rules, the team that wins the OT toss, the coin toss,

has won 52.4% of the times. Don't tell me college overtime rules are cool. It's hokey. The other thing is the reason they created this, the NFL is in a big player safety era. The reason they created this, they want the damn overtime to finish fast. They don't want to go and play 20 more minutes of football. They want this thing to start. They would love it if somebody took the kickoff back for a touchdown one player out.

So I think they may tweak it. But in the end, they do not want to compromise. the following week of football. Now, if you want to change it for the Super Bowl or conference championships, because you have a buy after that and say, hey, both teams get it in a conference championship or the Super Bowl. Yeah, I'm okay with them changing it for the postseason. But the idea that it's just broken, it's not.

Buy seller hole, Jimmy Garoppolo gets traded in the offseason. That's a buy. If I was the Pittsburgh Steelers, I'd make a call tomorrow. He's only 31 years old. he's the fourth best quarterback in his division. And as we've said before, as good as Kyle Shanahan is, you can't have the fourth best quarterback in a division and get a lot of home field playoff games.

It's a rough sled. Buy seller hole, the Steelers will draft a quarterback. I do think they will. It may not be first. If they get Garoppolo, it may be in the third round, but they have tremendous young talent. Deontay Johnson, Chase Claypool, Naji Harris, two offensive line on a great tight end from Penn State.

So I think Kenny Pickett fits. and he could start right away. But my guess is they go Garoplo. Buy seller holds. Tom Brady is done playing football. Bye, buy, bye, bye, buy. Listen, I, the company that announced this or broke the story has not back down one second. ESPN's not backing down from the reporting.

I was told by somebody I trust. I didn't break it. I didn't get it double sourced. But I called somebody and said, that's tied in. And he said, yeah, Tom's probably pissed. He didn't get to break the story. but he's going to close up shop. So who know?
