Is this the, you know, there have been teams that weren't dynastic, but they were for a year, the Lakers with

Wilts Jerry West, the Moses Malone added to Dr. Jay and the Sixers. They're not all-time great teams, but for a year they were magical. Is that what the Celtics feel like? That's what they feel like to me.

There were some sacrilegious things said earlier on the show. About what? About this Boston Celtics team being comparable to the Larry Bird, Boston Celtics. Even close. Not even close.

Come on now. I mean, for what these Boston Celtics, those Boston Celtics had to go through 260 win teams at one point in the Eastern Conference. They have to go through the Philadelphia 76ers with Dr. Jay and that whole Legion, Moses Malone, that whole Legion of players, the Lakers in their heyday. Like who, not that, again, this is not the day.

That's arguably the best Celtic team ever. That Bill Walton team, 100%. That made it be the best Celtic team ever. Bill Walton, former league MVP coming off the bench. Come on now. Compared to what? That's the distinction for me with the Celtics team. If you love team basketball, if you love the collective,

then you love this team. That's right. For the same reason that I loved the 04 Detroit Pistons when they knocked off the Los Angeles Lakers. No iconic player, no all-time transcendent superstar. But they all understood their role and they made the most of it. That's what I see with this Boston Celtics team. And you've made a lot of great points over the course of the show about, like, could they repeat?

Sure. They could repeat. But look, Al Horford coming up on 40 years old, right? Christopps Porzingis. You have no idea what you've got. Has to have surgery. Don't know what he's going to be going forward, whether he can sustain it. And that's your front line.

So while I love the foursome of Derek White, Drew Holiday, Jason Tatum, and Jalen Brown, and that is going to make you a contender right there, they have no front line. And size, whether it's with the Philadelphia 76ers or any number of teams that are not the Dallas Mavericks in the Western Conference, could easily get in your way. Yeah. Good general managers will tell you by their signings what they think of their stars. So Michael Jordan is the best player right ever. But they made Jerry Krause made sure that he always had somebody that could hit long distance.

Michael wasn't a great, didn't have great range. He was a great player. So a coup coach, a Kerr, a Paxon. So Jerry Krause was saying, this is the one thing Michael isn't great at. Scottie's not shooting range. Well, and you don't want him there. You want him in the heart of things operating and floor spacers. The Warriors was Steph Curry always made sure there was, you know, KD was a willing defender.

Andre Iguidala, Clay. Drake. We know Steph's not a great defender. People will attack him. Brad Stevens of the Celtics was telling you, I've tried this, I've coached him and I've GMed him. This Tatum-Latom-Laton-game dependency. And he just doesn't embrace it all the time.

So I'm going to give you a poor Zingas and a Drew Holiday. When Marcus Smart last year started taking the ball out of Tatum's hands, I think that's when Brad Stevens went, okay, if somebody's going to take the ball out of his hands, I'm going to have Drew Holliday and Porzinias do it. So, I mean, to me, Brad Stevens told you his slight reluctance with constantly depending on Tatum in a big spotlight. Yeah, I mean, I look at Derek White, I look at Drew Holiday,

as steadying influences under pressure. And getting those guys, and then Chris Stap's Perzingis, who you can give the ball to, one, rim protector, better than Robert Williams, available, excuse me, until this latest injury, the very shrewd, deft moves by Brad Stevens. And I agree with you. Like, he realized these are the gaps, these are the holes that my star player, because Jason Tatum, this is the beauty of beauty and the curse of Jason Tatum.

He can do a lot of different things. And he's willing to do a lot of different things. but you normally think of your superstar and your go-to guy as your go-to guy. Yeah, closure. And he's not. He's just not. And that's okay. I've actually, over the course of this season and these playoffs,

I've come to appreciate Jason Tatum for what he is because I've always accepted that he, what he isn't. And I think there's the people, the critics that are still holding on to, well, he didn't win finals MVP and he didn't do this and he didn't do that. It's like, yeah, he was, he's, he's not those things. Like, if that's what you want from your finals MVP, and I wouldn't have a problem if he had won. I don't have a problem that Jalen Brown won.

If you ask me who was the most consistent player, the most steadying influence, I'd probably give it to Drew Holiday, but the numbers, his highs weren't as high as Browns or Tatum's. But really the, the, the, I would have cut that, that finals MVP up, and I would have handed chunks to like four or five different guys because I felt like they all, not just contributed,

but they all had big moments. Derek White had big moments. Derek White's. Joe Holiday had big moments. Mike Breeden said that. Derek White's the most under-red player in the league. Not even a question. And so when we look at other championship teams,

I've never seen so many role players who had so many big moments. Right, right. Like game turning, series turning moments as this Boston Celtics team. I said it's, um, Luca, for me, if I can see your flaws, like with Tatum, I can't really see him. Yeah. I think a lot of them are above the shoulders. He's too collaborative for my taste, little less alpha, but I can't see it.

Yeah. It's just, you know, I'll see it sometimes when they'll dump it to him. He's got a match-up advantage of three feet and he doesn't fall. away. I'm like, dude, lean into it. Luke, as I can see, not guarding anybody, appears to be out of shape, take some rough shots,

and that's why maybe I'm too harsh, but with Luke, I'm like, I can see big holes. There's a difference between bucket getter and foundational championship player, and I think he's got to have a really, I think he's got to look in the mirror a little bit. Oh, for sure. For sure. I'm like a real look in the mirror. For sure.

But I would say this too. Like, Luca's problems are solvable. He can get into better shape. He can learn how to... Tatum's personality is what it is. He is what he is. Tatum has all this talent,

and you expect him to have this certain attitude. He doesn't have the ego of a transcendent superstar. Luca Dantzes has the ego of a transcendent superstar, and he has the game and the talent, but physically he has to get better. He's got to learn to play without the ball more. and trust his teammates. And so, like,

I think the only person who had a worse finals than Luca Donchich is me in terms of, I just wouldn't let go of, I ran all the stoplights in terms of what the Mavericks were. Like, you can't give away games in the finals and still win. You can't take guys who've never been

anywhere near this stage before and win. Like, I ignored, you can't have a guy who's fighting not five people in green but 18,000 in the stadium in the arena in kairi irving like i just i ignored so many things because i believe that the celtics didn't have that element of closing series and so i got i got to take this one on take this one on the chin i learned a lot we're kind of back to some of the tried and true which is experience yeah

And going through, you know, your beatings to get there. Like, we kind of lost sight of that for a while. I said. The Boston Celtics proved that. It was we over me, very effective, highly efficient, leaned into smart, and a star who was willing to not, you know, Brady took pay cuts, didn't have to have the headlines. It was basketball, it's usually been the star, the move. It's cool. It's the cool sport in America.

We don't think of baseball is cool. NBA can be cool, right? It's got juice. It's got energy. There's some... There's a culture. There's a cool culture to it. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

And the Celtics aren't cool. They're highly efficient. They're collaborative. They're almost corporate. They're all family guys. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's like, they're kind of a football team to play basketball. And in the end, you're like, who's the MVP?

Yeah. It doesn't really matter. Yeah. No, that's very true. I think that's probably why... They're likeable. I didn't get the sense that America really embraced These Boston Southers.

Well, there's two things happening in the NBA. It's becoming European. Yeah. And also it's becoming, Boston's very collaborative. Yeah. So these two things simultaneously happen. We don't quite know all these European dudes yet. And Boston doesn't have a lot of cool factor.

Yeah. And so I think people, it's not that we don't like it and accept it. We're not used to it with our basketball. Yeah. No. I can't argue with any of that. I do think that we are in a stage in the league though, and whether it's good for the league overall or not, certainly in an age of parity. Yeah.

But also, and Boston Celtics fans, don't get mad at me for saying this, because I would say this for any number of teams over the course of the last few years. Yeah. The path to winning a championship really matters. like who the matchups have become more prevalent who's healthiest at the end of the year is prevalent and part of that is just the parity factor like there's more good players yeah I think the problem that I had

and I still have in looking at this series is I don't think these teams were so far different that it's a gentleman's sweep like Dallas blew at least they certainly blew game three they could have won game two. See, you and I disagree here. I thought it was a total mismatch.

I just, when your two best players are disengaged defensively a lot? See, but the problem is, is that their defense wasn't their problem. Their problem was offense. Their problem was, and give credit to Boston's defense. But this is where I just, I thought that the Mavericks discovered in game three, in losing, when they went 20 and 2 to close it, right? Yeah, yeah.

What happened there? Lucas started giving up the ball, and he started giving it up early, and everybody else got involved, and every time you saw other guys touching it and touching it early, it still might come back to Luca, but he wasn't holding the ball for 18 seconds, and then kicking it. How about this, which you're overlooking.

Kairie was totally taken out of his game by the Boston game, crowd. Yes. He had three subpar games all in Boston. I would say, you know, if there's anybody who's, I mean, one of the questions we're going to talk about is Lucas' legacy and how this affected him. But I think Kyrie's took a huge hit with this final. I mean, we just, we put him in, we were putting him in a different category coming

out of Minnesota. Okay. If you stacked, how good were your finals? Brown, Luca, Tatum, Derek White. You know? Okay. He's not my, Kyrie's not in my top four.

I don't know where Kyrie is. I mean, but he's made sense. He would have continued to play. Not in my top five. He would have been in the five. Yeah. All right.

In terms of impact. All right. So I made a bold prediction. Oh, boy. You know, you go out in the limb, that's where all the fruit is. J.J.

Reddick tomorrow would be the Lakers coach. Okay. Tell me I'm wrong. This, my problem is, is if you were going to hire JJ, why, why have we waited all this time?

Well, why did we go chase Dan Hurley? Like, if that was the guy. Well, the Hurley thing was a little dicey. I would say they're waiting for the finals to end. Okay, so why? Well, because you don't, you want to be a good partner with the league and let the big

broadcast in the finals end. You want to be a good partner. Okay. You don't want to stick it to the league and announce it an hour before. Yeah, I mean, they, you know, you're trying to be a good team mate. I mean, you could have picked, you could have announced it before you got to the finals. Here's my thing. If you're the fifth coach

to hire a staff and you're a rookie coach who's never coach, if I was going to hire JJ Redick, I had done it right out of the shoot. Because then I can build the best staff. We saw Joe Missoula last year without a good staff. Yeah. He got worked.

Joe Missoula, they spent all off-season getting him of a staff. By the way, Steve Kerr knows this. Steve Kerr always had really strong staffs. You can only do so much. You have to, You know, and some stars have different coaches on staffs they connect with. Yeah.

So if I would have hired JJ Redick, I'd have just said, hey, ESPN, we apologize to Mike Brin. We're hiring him. Yeah. I'd have gone right after him. I just made me think of the fact that the Los Angeles Clippers just hired Jeff Van Gundy. That's a good hire on Lou. That's a great, great hire. He can be for Ty what Tom Fibito was for Doc Ruffington.

rivers in Boston. But wouldn't Jeff Van Gundy look good next to JJ Reddick? Well, Jeff Van Gundy would have a strong opinion. I'm not sure the Lakers want that. Yeah, well, you're right, which is part of the... Look, the reality is there's no magic bullet in terms of hiring a coach that is going to transform this Lakers team. Look how long it took Malone in Denver with Yokic, with Murray.

And this roster just isn't... It is what it is. Thank you. It's... By the way, For the record, and I tell Jemak this, champions create clarity. Austin Reeves is probably your second guy off the bench for Boston. He is if LeBroner A.D. take the night off.

He's their third best, yeah. No, he's their second best player on any night that LeBron or A.D. take off. He's off the bench and maybe not the first guy off. If Porzinger's is healthy and off the bench, Austin's the second guy off the bench for the Celtics. Yeah. That's the gap between the Celtics and the Lakers. Yeah. No, I agree.

Am I wrong? He looked at it. Am I wrong? If Porzingis is healthy, he's first off the bench. Austin Reeves is second. Rick, how close is White and Austin Reeves? Be careful. Remember, White is on a loaded team, so he has less to do it.

If he's bumped up to be the three on the Lakers, what is he? I mean, defensively. It's not close. Night and day. Not close defense air. And offensively night and day, too? And offensively, I can, Austin, I think, is a little bit more of a playmaker.

Yes, he is. And Derek's a better shooter. Yeah. But if you're asking me which guy I would take, I'm taking Derek White. Yeah, yeah. So you take Derek White behind AD and LeBron over Austin Reefs? Yeah. If I had that at the point?

Come on. Didn't Austin move? Like if I had that, rather the deal or Austin? What's that? And win? Didn't Austin Reeves lead them to a victory without LeBron? Okay. During the regular season?

Yeah, you remember that? They're in the regular season? Yeah. He celebrates regular season. Here's the biggest issue with hiring JJ. And it's nothing against him. But we already have a microscope on the Lakers. Everything that they do is scrutinized.

When you, like, where'd you start your career? Vegas. Yeah. I started mine in San Diego. Yeah. Like, when you're learning on the job, you don't want to do it on the biggest stage. And it doesn't matter what the roster is. everything he does is going to be scrutinized.

Everything that happens with LeBron or doesn't happen with LeBron is going to be scrutinized. And so that only adds pressure to the job in and of itself. And people have compared like Mark Jackson. Mark Jackson went to a Golden State team that hadn't won anything in a decade and won 23 games his first year. Okay? And nobody cared. Right, right.

Because there was no expectation. If the Lakers only win 23 games next year, all hell is going to break loose. And Steve Kerr, I'm sorry, but Steve Kerr played under Greg Popovich. He played under Phil Jackson. Kerr is one of the most successful people in the league's history. Does everything well. Broadcast coach.

I mean, comparing like, well, Steve Kerr did it, and Mark Jackson did it. You can't compare the circumstances that they were under. And Steve Kerr was handed a team that was just really, ready to jump out of the box and start contending for titles. I can't say that about these Los Angeles. I wasn't on a stage when I started in Vegas, but I was near one, if you know what I mean. He got it. Long story.

They have a new head coach in Ravens, D.C., Mike McDonald. Yeah. He has an interesting take saying that D.K. Metcalf is their best offensive weapon, and he wants to make sure D.K. Metcalf is the focal point of the offense. I can tell you this. We want to get D.K. the ball a lot, too. So we share that sentiment for sure. But it feels a, it feels. different now when 14's out there. He is a big imposing fast, powerful receiver man and you know, we're really excited about it and I think, you know, we've talked about it really

since, you know, we got here in February plans for him and Tyler and Jackson and Noah in our backs and what would it kind of look like and how we can move guys around and make, make D.K., you know, a moving target for defenses where they, you know, they have to account for him at all times, but it's going to be hard to find him. Yeah, the receivers aren't their problem. They've got a nice backs. They have two backs I like. They have the kid out of UCLA.

Yeah, they have two backs. So what's the problem? Their issue is they haven't had a consistent pass rush, and they don't have what I would consider a foundational quarterback. And that's their problem. Well, they just traded for Sam Howell a couple months ago, the former Washington. That's not going to solve it. They seem to like him.

I would not be shocked if he started it more than a team. defensive coach thinks that's the answer, then I'm going to disagree with that. If Gino Smith and Sam, how, both competent. Yeah. Both capable. Sam's got some juice to it. But that's not winning over McVe, Shanahan, Kyler Murray, Matt Stafford, and the all-star team known as the Niners. That's a fourth-place quarterback room.

I'm sorry, it is. They have maybe a top five wide receiver room in the league with TK. McFacket, Lockett, and Smith. They got plenty of... They're really... John Snyder's done a great job at receiver and back. I think their offensive line. I didn't love what Pete Carroll did

did the offensive line over the years. I thought they kind of... They drafted well a couple years ago. Is it possible? They're a DAC landing spot next year if the Cowboys part would Jack. Oh, I think absolutely. I know two teams that would go after DAC.

Absolutely. Seattle and Vegas would be absolutely interested. I wouldn't rule out New York Giants? Maybe. Running ability, Day Bowl. Well, he's a grown-up. He's going to win 12 games a year. year.

Yeah. Next up, Clay Thompson. This is starting to get interesting, Colin. Not only did he unfollow the Warriors and delete all his content from their 2022 title run, but Shams Sharania reports Clay will test free agency and is open to all options. He says Clay is seeking a three-year deal. He knows he won't get anything near the max. And for some reason, he's joining the Bahamian national team for training.

camp ahead of Olympic qualifiers. Oh, wants to be in shape. He's still part of USA basketball, but in shape. This is a guy who had a couple of major injuries a few summers ago. I'm surprised he's in a training camp. What would you? I'm not anti-clay. I would get my contract and then I would go ahead.

If you were the Warriors, would you keep him? After drafting pods, would you keep him? I mean, it's always the price point, right? I think he's a great first guy off the bench. He's a great bench player. But he doesn't want a one-year deal from the Warriors. That's right. So that's the problem.

you gave me a one-year deal, him off the bench. I would take Clay tomorrow. I think he could be the best bench player in the league. I mean, Porzinger is willing to come off the bench. And a lot of guys willing to come off the bench in this league. Russell Westbrook said, I'll come off the bench. He was a very good bench player.

Are you buying the Orlando smoke? I think he'd be a great fit there. But Clay Thompson feels very California to me. I don't see him. And I think the Warriors want him. I think Kerr really wants him. I think Joe Leakub is all about the price point because he blew through the salary cap for years

and had very punitive luxury-tack bills. And he's like, I'll do that when I hoist trophies. This is not a trophy team. So they've got some, you know, Coming is an interesting player, moody pods. They've got some young guys I like. But what you don't do is when the dynasty's over, it's over, and you have to be very selective on who you keep. I would keep Draymond and Curry, and I would move off everything else.

I would move off Wiggins tomorrow. The best time to rebuild is last year. And I think they missed their window with trading clay getting something. Now, imagine losing it for nothing. That's not great. Like, I know you like Pods, but is he ready to step in? Well, it's a younger league. Pods is ready to play.

I like it. I like it. I like it. I'm a bullish on that guy for a while. Final story is to the Euros, where France got a win over Austria yesterday on an own goal. But Kiliin Abbe was injured. Arguably the best player in the world suffered what right there, a broken nose.

Cristiano Ronaldo back in action, but Zimbabwe, we want our stars out there. We're going to see Messi in Copa America. Oh, yeah. Oh, I can't wait for the Coppa. Yeah, I mean, it's summer of soccer. Very excited. It's very exciting. It'll be better than the NBA finals, that's for sure.

Well, it was, I will say this about a company I used to work for. They did not do well with NBA playoff revenue. All these sweeps and gentlemen sweeps? Like ESPN, I've said before, the only time I've seen nervous executives in my career is when you get sweeps and gentlemen sweeps in any sport, you lose money. So you're already paying a four. So you've got to make it. People understand.

Like the NFL's different. You pay for rights for the NFL, but the Super Bowl is a freebie. So that's where you make your money back as a Super Bowl. So if you get a Super Bowl every four years, you can make $500 million. Now, of course, you have to pay for all the production. But a Super Bowl can make $550 million. If it goes into overtime, like, like, you know, the Patriot, was Atlanta Patriot? Chees Steiner's.

Yeah, that's under $25 million. You're on the phone with advertisers. So what you don't want is sweeps in general. Gentlemen sweeps, you are hemorrhaging money. Boston was bad for business.
