This is an I-Heart podcast.
Guaranteed Human.
Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite.
Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends.
Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman
help make you funnier.
This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel,
help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Where does your group perform?
We do some retirement homes.
Those people are starving for banter.
Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel
and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games.
Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's
superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year.
Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth.

On the Look Back at it podcast.
From 1979, that was a big moment for me.
84 was big to me.
I'm Sam Jay.
And I'm Alex English.
Each episode, we pick a year, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we
survived it with our friends, fellow comedians, and favorite authors.
Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s.
84 was a wild year.
It was a wild year.
I don't think there's a more important year for black.

Man, the show is flying by.
First two hours flew by.
Hour number three live in LA, it's the herd, wherever you may be.
However you may be listening, IHeartRadio, Fox Sports Radio,
at S-1. Sean Payton has been such a windfall for us.
So much insight and information will be joining us in about 30 minutes, 25 minutes.
It is great to have you in today.
Jay Mack is joining me as well.
So you've got to feel pretty good.
I've got to be honest.
You're a jet fan now.
At least you go to Green Bay with this feeling.
We got a shot.
We can compete with them physically.
Patriots ran all over them.
weeks ago. Giants ran all over them.
Reese Hall and Michael Carter are going to run all over them.
How about this? I have Sauce Gardner.
They don't have a receipt. He could take out anybody he wants to.
I mean, South Gardner, the great thing about him is when you play a Buffalo, you can put
him on Stefan Diggs or you could put him on a Dave, Gabriel Davis.
But, I mean, now, I mean, you almost have a surplus of riches at Green Bay.
I mean, listen, what's the phrase?
Just they have so much talent on this team that's young on the rookie deals, Colin.
Aerole's pointing directly upward for the New York football jets.
You love it when I get fired up about it.
Well, I like, I think sports is better when the Yankees, the Knicks, the New York football teams.
I think it's sports is better.
To a lot of the country, they're a villain.
To a lot of the country, L.A. is a villain.
The Cowboys, I think there's value in Darth Vader hovering in our sports.
I like that.
Sean Payton 20 minutes stops by.
All right, the Cowboys, they're four and one.
Hammer the Rams been a successful run with backup Cooper Rush as their starting quarterback.
Dallas won convincingly yesterday with 10 first downs.
You look over the box score.
No turnovers, very few penalties.
Now the question is when DAC returns, yes, he's better than Cooper Rush and yes, he's going to start.
The question, though, is what will Dallas look like?
because this version of the Cowboys is the last time they won
Dax Rookie Year.
They leaned into the run game.
They led the NFL in rush attempts, Dax Rookie Year.
They played clean football.
They didn't ask him to do much.
Not a lot of interceptions.
Weren't as many penalties.
They let their defense win games in Dax Rookie Year.
It was a top five scoring defense.
And you have a very good defense now.
maybe not the Niners, maybe not the
Bills, but it's good. It's really good.
But this is the last time we saw the Cowboys
win was Dax's rookie year.
And there was an understanding
that you would lean into
the more talented players,
the run game, the defense,
play clean, don't ask Dack to do a lot.
Because the more you ask from Dack,
the more uncomfortable
and mistakes you have, because he's limited.
The biggest difference between Cooper,
rush and Dak Prescott.
Dax's more athletic and has a much bigger bank account.
But there's not a wide difference.
I don't believe in talent.
Dax better.
And again, I think he's a little thicker.
He's a little more athletic.
But this is when the Cowboys have won.
But something happened.
Dax started becoming, you know, instead of Dack Prescott, it was just Dack.
He got a nickname.
He became iconic.
And there was this sense that Dax's a superstar shows like this, argue.
He's unbelievable.
Nope, he's very believable.
His intangibles are better than his tangibles.
His college coach once came on their show and said,
yeah, even when he was winning in college,
we didn't think he was a great thrower.
He's not, never has been, never will be.
He's athletic, but he's not Lamar.
He's not Josh Allen.
He's got a decent arm.
It's not Mahomes.
It's not Brady.
It's not Stafford.
When Dak returns, he'll get the job.
Hopefully the Cowboys will do what they're doing now.
Lean into the run game.
Take the ball out of the quarterback.
hands, lead with the defense, keep the turnovers low. You can win a lot of football games in the
NFL. But there was something that happened after Dak's rookie year until this injury that has
let everybody believe. And we've shown you multiple times the data on this. It's indisputable.
The more this team has leaned into DAC to carry them, the less successful they are. They can't
beat good teams. And now this division, by the way, Philadelphia is for real and the Giants found
the right coach and Washington
has got some players.
You can't just sleepwalk through this division anymore
or you're going to go 0 and 2 against Philly
and you're going to split at best against New York
because they got the right coach.
So it is, the question
isn't, does Dax start?
Yeah, Dax's going to start and Dack is better.
But will the Cowboys realize
that Dax's rookie year,
13 and 3, and this winning
streak is the same recipe for
success? Don't
be led by a
quarterback.
I know that gets paid like a star.
He's not a star.
He's not somebody that can pull a bad O-line
and pull an offense and pull a bad defense.
It's not who he is, man.
There's like seven of those guys on the planet.
He's not close.
Let's talk about the game in London yesterday,
the Giants and the Packers.
So if I would have told you before the game,
the Giants
missing their top four receivers
with Daniel Jones
will have more passing yards
in the Packers.
The Giants will be better
on third down, situational football.
Daniel Jones,
missing his top four receivers
than the New York Giants.
See, you can see
the impact of Brian Daibel,
the guy over my shoulder,
the rookie head coach.
We're five games into it.
You can see it.
There's three things that matter
with coaching to me.
Situational.
Giants now are an excellent
situational football team. Good on third down, good in the red zone. Does your coach make adjustments
at halftime? The Giants are plus 31 in the NFL this year. Top three second half. That's with Daniel
Jones. Do you get the ball to the right people? Saquan Barkley, almost 700 total yards, leads the NFL.
Three boxes that Brian Daibel is immediately checking. They're much better situationally. They make
unbelievable adjustments at half, and he gets the ball to the right people.
I could argue Matt LaFleur is bad at all three.
Situationally, how do you get out played by Daniel Jones situationally with Euroline,
Aaron Jones, Aaron Rogers, and your tight end?
At half, the Packers don't do anything at half.
This entire season, they've been a one-half team.
They work hard in Green Bay.
all week and then they come into the game and they have great first half.
They are a negative 20 second half team.
They make no adjustments.
They're a one-half football team, which, by the way, Aaron Rogers said last week and he was
right, it's not sustainable.
You can't keep winning like this.
And do they get the people that should get the ball to ball?
No, the Packers don't do that either.
Aaron Jones leads the NFL in yards per carry.
He's their best player on offense outside of Aaron Rogers, leads the NFL in yards per carry.
he's 19th in attempts.
So situationally, where the Giants are crushing, Green Bay's bad.
After half, Giants crushing Green Bay bad.
Get the ball to the right people.
Giants are leaning heavy into Saquan-Barkley.
Packers, sometimes Aaron Rogers.
I'm like, is that the only Aaron on the field?
Where did Aaron Jones go?
We do this from time to time.
tall, thin, good looking.
We just lump Matt Lafleur in with the, you know, McVeigh and Shanahan.
He's one of the great young coaches.
Why?
Why?
This is what coaching looks like.
Brian Dable is what coaching looks like.
You can see it on the field that he's taking Daniel Jones.
Now, I'm probably more down on Daniel Jones than a lot of you are.
I do not seem as a guy that can carry me to multiple playoff wins, potentially on the road.
I don't.
But I know this, that Dayball is such a good coach.
We will know what the best of Daniel Jones is by the end of the year.
Because he will squeeze every ounce of talent out of Daniel Jones.
So we'll know by week 17.
Whatever Daniel Jones is, that's what he is.
That's what he's going to be.
And it may be better than I think.
And they may move on with him or they may move off him.
And that's Brian Daibald's decision.
But the good thing is he's going to get everything out of him.
You're not going to get rid of Daniel Jones.
then he pops up somewhere else and rolls.
It's not going to happen.
But when you watch the Giants,
you are seeing coaching.
Half-time adjustments, getting the ball to the right people.
I'm not a coach.
I don't sit and watch film all week,
but I can see really, really good coaching.
And I can see an impact of coaching.
The Giants are now an excellent situational team
with an average O-line.
And I think an average quarterback, they're clever.
They outsmart you.
They out-think you.
They out-clever you.
They're making terrific halftime adjustments,
whatever those are.
And then after the game, Aaron, who can be prickly, he doesn't like what his teammate Jaya Alexander said after the game, which was Jair said basically, I'm not worried. If we lose next week, I'm worried. And here's what Aaron said.
Frankly, I don't like all this conversation about losing next week. I'm a firm believer in the power of words and manifestation.
And we've got to check ourselves on that because talking about that is not, that's not winning football.
there was conversation about the locker room and I don't like it.
And,
uh,
John's my guy, but we don't need to be talking like that.
I often am very critical of Aaron,
but people have annoyed it.
Matt LaFleur is a great coach.
Show it to me. I've watched this
Green Bay team meltdown at
home situationally, fourth quarter
last two years. They're not great
situationally. I'm not saying they were with McCarthy.
They're not with LaFleur.
They're not.
making adjustments at half. I said this now for two years. They're beating up on a worse division.
Show me the post seat. You didn't hire Lafleur to beat the Lions. You hired Matt LaFleur to beat Tom Brady,
to beat the Rams to get the Super Bowls. Show me the money. Because I'm watching the Giants right
now, and I think they have holes everywhere. And I'm like, that is coaching. You watch the Giants
in the second half? Long drives. With that online? By the way, where's Green Bay's defense?
what part of Green Bay, name it, is playing great football.
The defense isn't as good as I thought it would be.
The Giants went up and down the field on them in the second half.
Special teams actually are okay, but they're not getting the ball to Aaron Jones enough.
Aaron Rogers isn't happy.
They're no longer a deep threat team.
I don't know.
Just telling you what I'm seeing.
You know, and McIntyre and the rest of you were crushing me
because I didn't have the Packers in the top 10.
Don't you feel a little guilt now today?
feel a little bit silly.
A little egg on my face this morning, yes.
What do you get when you combine a three-time manager of the year
at a three-time national sports writer of the year?
It's the Book of Joe podcast.
Hey, this is Tom Verducci from Fox Sports,
MLB Network and Sports Illustrated.
And I'm Joe Madden,
and we're going to be around to talk a little bit about managerial decisions,
playoff games, and what may have occurred in the dugout,
maybe in the 1980s.
I can't wait for this, Joe.
We're going to dive into what goes on in the Doug.

Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tap Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs?
Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people.
I know what you're thinking.
What the hell does George Bush got to do?
a little Kim. Well, you can find out
on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm
Sam Jay. And I'm Alex English.
Each episode, we pick it here,
unpack what went down, and try to make
sense of how we survived it. Including a
recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill
waxing all about crack in the 80s.
To be clear, 84 is big to me
not just because of crack.
I'm down to talk about crack on day,
but yeah, yeah, literally. But just so you all know.
I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second
episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that
there's a through line. We also have AIDS.
on the table right now.
Thank you for finishing that sentence.
Yes.
I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Really?
Yeah.
For me, it's one of the most important years
for black people in American history.

Every new potential hire these days.
Oh, I've got to read my Vegas spot.
Today's show sponsored by Vegas.
You're home for all live sports.
Every game match race competition.
It's always on Las Vegas.
Sean McVean Payton is around the corner
You know it's interesting
I got to ask him a while I was thinking about this
is that when you're like Sean McVeigh
and you're down to a third string center
and like a third string right guard
and you're shuffling people
and you're going to play the Cowboys
Do you know having watched the film
we won't be able to block them?
Are you hopeful that you can block them
but you have a third string center
I mean it's all musical chairs outside of right tackle
do you know going into a game
Yeah, we're going to, we just, I think, I think deep down you create a package knowing certain guys we can block certain guys we can't.
Like, I think they thought they could block Buffalo and then realize by half we can't.
San Francisco, I think they realized going into the week, we can't.
But I watched that Rams game plan yesterday.
There was that one big deep throw to Tutu Atwell.
But by and large, they built a game plan to get the ball out of Stafford's hand.
He was sacked five times.
J. Mack with the news.
No.
Turn on the news.
This is the herd line news.
College football, the new AP pool is out.
Yes.
And listen, this thing is a little silly.
George is back at number one.
Remember they fell last week because of a close game?
They're back at number one.
Ohio State 2, Bama 3 after a narrow win over Texas A&M.
Rounding out the top 10.
You've got Clemson at 4, Michigan 5, Tennessee 6.
USC.
Trojans at 7.
OK State.
Ole Miss, which is...
Lane Kiffin.
He's doing a damn good job.
He's a very good coach.
And number 10, Penn State.
Everybody.
Everybody.
Yeah, UCLA is probably 10 or 11.
That's crazy.
I would take UCLA over Penn State, but I don't know if I'd take, I've got to be honest with you.
When I look at that list, the team I wouldn't want to play right now is Tennessee.
They've got a really big time quarterback.
They're playing great.
First time in a long time.
No program has lost more close games bizarrely than Tennessee over the last decade.
And they have an amazing fan.
base, so I am rooting for Tennessee to be relevant, because I think it's a tremendous program.
Also, JMU cracking the top 25. Shout out to the Dukes. That's where I graduated from.
They used to be 1-A. I know you care greatly about the JMUks.
Really do it. Next up, Baker Mayfield. Colin, I got a big prediction. He's going to be the last
time we talk about him on the show for a month. He's in a walking boot, and he's reportedly
out due to a high ankle sprain for a couple of weeks. It's over for Baker Mayfield.
PJ Walker will get the start against the Rams this week. The line has ballooned up to 10. The
Rams are 10-point favorites.
Donald and Baker have both been hurt with that
offensive line. So maybe it's not
the quarterback. I'm not defending anybody.
I'm just saying this
offensive line is bad for Baker and Darnal's
health. It's been a trouble spot for
them for multiple years.
I'm not saying it's easy, but
because they don't pay
the quarterback's big money, the O line, in my
opinion, should be better than it is. If you're
paying your quarterback a fortune,
it's hard. But once
that quarterback takes a more reasonable
check, you should have a better role on than you do. Listen, people are going to come after Baker,
call him a bust or whatever. It should be noted. Your staff came up with a great, great stat.
Baker, when he returns from this injury, will be playing for his sixth head coach in five seasons
now that they fired Matt Rule. That kind of matters. Remember there was a kid years ago,
played at Auburn named Jason Campbell. Yeah. And I didn't think he was going to be great.
That kid had six coordinators in six years, and I'm like, that's not fair. Like certain guys,
some of this, and I'm not saying he would have been tremendous. Some of this stuff is,
is do you enter chaos or not?
Stability is, in my life personally,
I've been lucky I've had great management.
What if I had a different boss for seven straight years
with a different idea on how to do TV and radio?
It's like absolutely affects careers.
Bad ownership.
There's some good owners out there, about eight of them, nine of them,
and there's some bad owners out there.
Yeah.
All right.
We'll wrap up with the Monday Night Football Game,
Raiders Chiefs, good divisional matchup.
Kansas City has won eight of the last nine against Vegas.
According to Fox Bet, the Chiefs are favor by seven tonight.
I was hoping to get seven and a half with the Raiders.
I think it's going to be a good game.
I actually do.
You taking the prime time under and the dog?
Yeah, I just, I think the Raiders are a fun watch.
And I think those division games are hard and unpredictable.
And go back to the Saints dominating Brady and then through the years.
You get into these divisional matchups.
And it's just, I mean, McVeigh owns Arizona.
Shanahan owns the Rams.
I think tonight's a very competitive football game.
You have an affinity for Derek Carr.
Do you not?
I like him.
Yeah, you're a fan of his work.
I think he's overcome, again, overcome ownership chaos, teams move, the Gruden situation,
some bad drafts.
This would get a win tonight gets the Raiders right back in the mix.
Oh, no question.
With the division with the Denver Broncos flailing and struggling.
Good stuff.
J-Mac with the news.
Well, that's the news.
And thanks for stopping by.
The Hurd-Lie news.
A Super Bowl champ, now a Fox analyst.
We've been lucky to have Sean Payton for the last month and a half.
He is now joining us as he does Monday live.
We're bringing him in studio and we absolutely love this.
Great seeing you again, coach.
So I want to start with the cowboy thing.
I was asking him during the break.
So do you know as a coach?
Now, you had a very good offensive line for your last several years.
But are there matchups?
Does McVeigh look at the film this week and say,
I look at that defensive front and I look, I'm on a third string center.
and we're not going to be able to do anything down the field.
Did you know, and again, this didn't happen to you a ton
because you had very good personnel,
but are there things on film that you can see going into a game
as we just can't run these places?
Yeah, look, it's happened to me too.
When you're coaching this league long enough,
and the most drastic week and a half two weeks of what you're discussing,
was the offensive coordinator at the New York Giants.
We had just beaten the Vikings in 2040.
one nothing to go to the Super Bowl.
That was the good news. Now the bad
news was we were watching
the Ravens beat the Raiders
in the AFC championship game and that's
who we played and all week long as we studied
the Ravens defense
really for two weeks because we had
the buy. They were one of those teams
that were fantastic
defensively and
so as you went through the matchups
that's part of the game plan
and it becomes sometimes
you know, at 10 at night, you're like, you don't see a first down.
Like, you don't, and then, but your job still is.
And there was a great quote, Bill used to say he got this, Parcells used to say he got this
from his old coach.
You know, there's a way to win every one of these games.
You just got to figure out how.
So despite that.
Right.
And I, you know, we spend a lot of time preparing for things that fit us and that would
apply to beating Dallas or beating
the Ravens or beating whoever the opponent
is. Was that the best defense you ever saw on film?
It's the best defense that
I was ever a part of seeing on film.
I think it's probably the second best
historic defense in our
league's history to the Bears in 85.
Right.
But the players deserve
a chance to win. Right.
And it's our job to figure out how
and there are ways, you know,
whether it's the quick game, whether it's the
screens.
playing a game in a certain fashion.
Like I thought Arizona yesterday, for instance, in their game against the Eagles,
and I said this in the pregame show yesterday,
I thought they played the correct game to win,
and here they were in a fairly hard-fought, low-scoring game,
and they go wide right with a kick.
Why did you think it was the right game?
I thought they did a good job with balance.
I think the time of possession.
You know, the thing that scared me about that match,
up was Philadelphia is the best first half points differential team in football in Arizona's
32nd in this. So you're down 17, not in 20 nothing or something. So I was, you know, the key for Arizona
in that first half was going into halftime where it's it's a it's a hard fought balance game. I thought
time of possession was going to be important. I thought they did a pretty good job there.
The balance was going to be important. So it was the type of game. I think.
felt Arizona had to play to win. Now, they didn't win, but I think that gets back to what we're
discussing relative to seeing, let's say, you're playing Dallas, and obviously Sean has seen
enough film on those guys. Both offenses are not going to put up a lot of points. So what can we
do defensively? What can we do in the kicking game? And then what can't we do offensively?
that prevents us from winning.
And that is turn the ball over.
That is, you know, and right away early, we got a sack, fumble touchdown.
And so there are certain things that keep you from winning games.
That's the type of thing that can keep you from winning a game.
So guys like me sit out here and blah, blah, blah, have big opinions.
But I always try to back them with data.
Sure.
So the three things, I don't watch film you do.
If I'm going to criticize a coach, there's three things I always look at.
Are you good situationally?
Brian Dable's team is good situation.
Yeah.
And I think there's some limitations on the front.
No, I agree.
That was an impressive win.
And I always think the best coaches of my life, you're won Jimmy Johnson.
You can make adjustments in that 12 minutes at half.
It's hard.
Yeah.
The third thing I look at coaches, so situationally do you have your act together?
And there are limitations.
Are you capable as a staff of making adjustments?
And the third thing is, do you get to the ball with the right people?
So I look at the Giants.
Sequin now leads the league.
I look at New York, Sean, that looks like a well-coached team to be.
I would agree with you.
I would agree with you.
And look, to your second point about adjustments in Granite,
we bundle it into halftime adjustments, which makes sense.
But we're getting these photos between series and we have the tablets.
I'm old school.
I like the actual pictures.
No big deal.
And we're looking at them.
We're looking at them.
And we're beginning to talk about what we want to present at halftime.
And so, like, that's ongoing.
You know, in other words, our defense is on the field.
I've looked at the pictures.
Hey, make a note, guys, we've got to get back to this.
And at halftime, let's put in this.
You know, not now.
We've got another eight minutes in the second quarter,
but because literally when you get to halftime,
if you're sitting down saying, all right, let's, well, look,
you've taken a P, right?
everyone's done that. You've grabbed a banana or something to eat and then quickly you've
talked to your players and the whistle. I mean, it's really quick. So the adjustment that you're
going to talk about at halftime is beginning to formulate itself in the first quarter as you
gain information, second quarter. But to your point, you're making adjustments.
I think your third point is extremely important. How are we getting the ball to our guys?
Saints did it yesterday would Tayson Hill.
Well, that was something.
Let's talk about that.
I mean, that's why you loved him.
Well, I texted Mickey yesterday, and he's my closest friend.
Mickey Loomis.
He's the GM of the Saints.
And I said, hey, if you're uncomfortable with that $10 million salary,
let me know in a year or two, and I'll take it off your hands.
He's, and look, I would love to have seen a game where John Madden covered Taysam Hill.
Because I think John Madden would have loved Taysam Hill, like all of us watching him.
But Madden would have really loved this guy as a football player because beyond all of it,
he had 69 yards and return yardage.
Deante Hardy got injured, the returner.
So he went to that position.
He's rushing punts, recovers a punt fumble, has over 100 yards rushing, has three touchdowns,
throws for a touchdown.
And the last time that happened was Ladani and Tomlinson.
I called Breeze last night, and I said, hey, you realize,
what our guy did today. And Breeze was like, no, I said, come on. The last time someone ran for over
100, threw for three touchdowns, or ran for three and through for one was LT, and you would have
been on the field with him. And LT was a real good, I mean, he could throw the ball. And they would
put in design passes. And having had a chance to coach him and be a part of his development,
the greatest thing about him is he's such a good teammate. Like, I don't care where the
players from or who's on the sideline.
They all respect him and they love him because
he's so unselfish.
You know, he's an L3 on the kickoff.
And there aren't a lot of guys like that.
And so that was fun watching that
because it's unusual and now everyone's
looking for Taysam Hill. Yeah.
So I think in this league, you're a great
example. You have 10 more years of coaching
if you want. If I was your age
and I'd say, A, be patient. Just
make sure they've got a quarterback. I think it's virtually you and Andy Reid would figure out a way
to kind of make, well, I mean, Sean McVeigh, some of you guys, very, very elite class.
But I look at Matt Rule and I think, I think Matt's a smart guy. I don't think you can win
in this league if you're getting C minus quarterback play. And so everybody here can bang on Matt
rule. My takeaway is if I was Oklahoma or one of these unstable positions, I'd call him in a second,
is how attractive, because I hear all these names.
for the Carolina job. How attractive is this job
without a quarterback? Yeah,
I think, look, I think
it's attractive. First
off, the jump sometimes
from a successful college
head coach to
an NFL head coach
is larger than you think.
It just
is. Schematically, red zone,
third down. And I
say that respectfully, because in
college, it's a different job.
You've got
a certain amount of hours
per week. You've got spring ball,
you're recruiting, you've got
a lot of things that are happening.
I particularly don't like getting
dressed up. But in college, as a head
coach, you're going to be in dress shoes, slacks.
I like putting a pair of Jordans on
in sweats and going to watch film.
Yeah. And I don't
want to deal with a booster
and I don't really want to talk to
the parent of a player.
Right. And I want
to coach. And yet, that's the
college game. And so
the transition number one
is significant.
But back to your question, is it
an attractive job? Look,
it's almost
a unicorn, the open
job with a great quarterback,
waiting for you to come in and be the foster parent.
I mean, Green Bay is the last one that had that job.
Can you imagine?
Usually,
generally speaking, it's somewhat
broken. And you brought up
something that I thought was really important. The timing of function versus dysfunction.
And oftentimes the better quarterbacks are going to dysfunction because they're going to the
first pick of the draft, second pick of the draft, third pick of the draft. And then by the way,
when Ben slips a little and he's angry, well, it's a blessing. He went to Pittsburgh. When Aaron
slips a little and he goes to Green Bay, it's a blessing because he's going to...
Matt Jones. Yeah. Those are good problems. But at the very moment they're
happening, the short-term money and the short-term, you know, knocking the ego, if you will,
ah, you know, I thought I was going to go forth overall. I get all that. But turning a program around,
it's interesting. So we've got the divisions. There's four teams in each division. And there's
generally one on the top, and the other three are trying to knock them off. And if they don't do it in
two or three years they're out.
And so I remember when I arrived in New Orleans in 06,
Gruden, a real close friend,
was the head coach at Tampa Bay.
They were the team.
They had won a Super Bowl.
Good personnel.
Yeah.
John Fox, good coach, was at Carolina,
and Jim Mora Jr. was at Atlanta.
I knew all three of them well.
I worked with John Fox in New York for four years.
He's a close friend to this day.
Both he and Gruden.
And yet you realize
all three of us or four of us,
four of us are not going to be around in three years.
And then pretty soon in New Orleans, as we got to that spot, we kept track of the coaches.
And I think our staff saw 14 different coaches in the NFC South.
Wow.
And it's just that little miniature king of the hill.
And so quickly.
But you also got that quarterback right.
That was important.
Yeah.
No, no, no.
That was important.
But he wasn't in the building.
And so immediately, whoever's next to Carolina is looking at that.
Is it in the draft?
Do we have a hold-de-fork guy in free agency
until we find it in the draft?
Or is there a guy we like in free agency
that we feel like can be a good player?
Okay, I'm going to throw this at you.
Okay.
I'm a Garoppolo fan.
I am too.
Okay.
So you and I are on Garopolo Island,
and I watch him yesterday.
And for a strong point of view offensive coach,
yep.
Gets it out, gets it accurate, gets it quick.
and so I look at Carolina and I think
I'd make a run at Garoppolo.
That's the discussion
we have. We go in, we put up
on the board, we put up in the
building
right, whoever's in the building at that
position, and then we put in the league
and then
when I say in the league, who
potentially are guys that would be coming up in
free agency or who potentially are guys that
might be, you know,
I like Teddy Bridgewater.
Now he just got injured yesterday, but
who are the,
these options potentially in the league.
In February,
when I was in New Orleans, we had the second
pick of the draft. It was the first year we
were there, and we were studying closely,
Linerd, Vince Young, and we were
studying closely, Cutler. That was
that class. Yeah, I remember that class.
And in the meantime, we were looking at
who was available. Josh
McCown was on a flight
to New Orleans.
He's who we were signing
as a veteran quarterback
that could commend Drew
Breeze became available. We were in negotiations with Drew. Miami was too. Drew agreed to our
contract. Josh was connecting in Charlotte. He went back to the original city he was flying from.
It's a true story. Wow. And so the search for who we're looking for begins immediately.
And then where we're looking to find it is everywhere. That is so good. I got a lot more.
Stick around. Sean Payton. We've got to take a break. Be sure to catch live editions of

Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tap Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs?
Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people.
I know what you're thinking.
What the hell does George Bush got to do a little Kim?
Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast.
I'm Sam Jett.
And I'm Alex English.
Each episode, we pick you here, unpack what went down.
and try to make sense of how we survived it.
Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill,
waxing all about crack in the 80s.
To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack.
I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know.
I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode
where we've discussed crack, so I'm starting to see that there's a through line.
We also have AIDS on the table right now, so.
Then you're finishing that sentence.
Yes.
I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history.

Okay, week five, we got a coach fired. So that's early. Oh, that's early for, I mean.
I can't recall. So what is it? Why? Well, I don't know. I just, when it happened and I
read it, like all of us today this morning, what have you, I thought to myself, I can't recall
in my 26 years in the NFL, 25 years in the NFL of a coach, a head coach being let go this early.
That's unusual.
And generally speaking, it's a little bit later in the season.
Big money.
I see it in college and pro.
The money's greater.
I'm paying you more.
I want wins earlier.
Yeah.
And maybe I want to get a.
to jump on the competition earlier as well. I think you're right there. Yeah. By the way, if I was an owner
and I had a coach who I like but wasn't, I'd say, listen, kid, get out there, get your name on the
college boards. I don't think it's always a bad thing. I'd rather be fired. If somebody didn't like me,
let me go long. Yeah, and generally there's an offset in these contracts. So if, if Matt were to go
coach at college XYZ, his salary less the salary owed. There's always, there's generally an
offset. Okay, listen, I like going for it and fourth and one. Yesterday, you got about a minute 15 left. Chargers go for it.
The reason I would have punted here is because Cleveland had no timeouts and a career backup, and they had to go 60 yards to get a kick.
Yeah. If it's Peyton Manning, and it's a minute 50, I go for it.
Yeah. So when I think of analytics, I think the easy out for all of us is two-point plays and going
going forward on fourth down. I think of analytics and the procurement of players, height,
weight size speed, history of, what I'm looking for prototype-wise. Maybe analytically,
how is a defense on first and second down versus the run-run combo, the run-pass combo,
the pass-run combo, or the pass-pass, because I want to know CFL numbers. I want to know
how to get a first down when I don't even get to third down. So I'm tired, I'm not tired, but the
fourth down, going forward, going forward.
I didn't like that.
I 100% agree.
Now, if it was Mahomes, I may go for it.
Well, it's a different, when we play Rogers, when we play Mahomes, we think differently.
The numbers are different.
These guys are the best in the last 20 years and two-minute offense.
And so, and I, look, Jacoby's doing a great job, but all of that's factored in.
And it also, whether you like it or not, you're sending your.
defensive message and I don't like that.
Yeah. You know, it's interesting.
You've talked about this because we have.
I think, I do think, I remember
years and years ago, Bill Pollyan talked about
this. He goes, when we got Peyton Manning, we knew
we would lead late in a lot of games.
Yeah. So we wanted to draft pass rushers.
Yeah, that's good thinking.
So I think there's a, there's a broader
picture approach. And by the way, we're
playing inside. Okay.
All right. So we're going to have an advantage
on the snap count because of crowd.
noise and so even if a guy might be like math is a little undersized we're going to get to the
quarterback with speed off the edge. Interesting. Yeah we're this is maniacal thinking. But your crowd in
New Orleans was a huge age. Same way. No it's it's all of that's important. And so we we went
through a ton of years where we played with leads and with Breeze. And, uh,
And you had a lot of good pass?
We had a lot of good pass rushers.
You know, the late Will Smith, and now you're seeing Cam Jordan,
but a ton of different guys over the years.
And then the type of defense you want to play relative to your surface,
relative to the current rules.
I mean, the old Tampa, too, we saw a lot of.
It's a little bit harder to play now when guys are coming off.
Their zone hash marks and making collisions and penalties are being thrown
because of the, you know, defenseless play.
So that's changed the game a little bit as well.
So, you know, Dax's better than Cooper Rush, but there are some similarities that I think both need a run game and a defense to win consistently.
I like Dak.
I don't love him, but I like him.
Not an elegant thrower.
I think his intangibles are often better than his tangibles.
So with Cooper, they're playing a certain style.
Yeah.
When Dak comes back, would you change the style?
No, I think the thing that they're going to find, and this happens to all of us, all right,
at home.
Dak gets injured.
Cooper comes in as the starter,
and it's like when our cables,
like we're struggling,
and we just,
they say,
just unplug it all,
and then reboot.
And then this is what we're going to do,
and that formula has been pretty good.
And so I think it's going to be something
that down the road they're going to look back on and say,
A, we survived that pretty well with Cooper,
to his credit,
B, the coaching staff, to their credit, have done a great job of rethinking how to win.
And then lastly, C, we know how to win.
And some of that's going to apply as DAC enters the line.
He's the starter when they come back.
Of course, yeah.
But they've established the ground game.
They've established time of possession.
Meanwhile, their defense each week has gotten better.
Yes.
Right?
And so it's kind of like the reboot in the house, you know,
where you're just like when you run out of having a hound, you know,
How do I fix this picture and I just unplug it all?
Right.
And I plug it back in.
I do that all the time.
I think that's what Dallas has gotten with this injury.
You know, would you worry, you know, we always say this about college basketball.
Like teams look great in January.
It's like it's March.
You know, so Philadelphia right now is they've played a couple soggy games, advantage.
They've played a couple teams.
Arizona's got some cultural chaos.
Jacksonville didn't know how to win.
yet. I like them a lot. But I don't, I think it's steps in this league. I don't see Philadelphia.
Maybe I'm wrong here as a Super Bowl team. I see them as a Donovan McNabb said a week ago.
I feel like they're a step away. And I'm like, yeah, that's exactly what I see. Or am I out of my
mind? Do you just see better person out? Well, it's interesting. Donovan said that because we
always felt he was a step away with his Eagles. And I say that is, is poking fun at them because they were
just a step away.
No, I see them as one of the two or three.
You do.
Well, yeah, and look, they're unbeaten.
The year that we won 13 in a row and started the season unbeaten, man, there were all kinds
of wins along that journey.
You know, we came back and stole a game from the Redskins.
We had no business winning.
You know, you just can't play in our league 10 in a row with them all being clean.
And yesterday, I thought Arizona played a really good game yesterday.
yesterday and had a chance late.
And you're on the road. Yeah. And so
now is Philly,
we're going to see, we're going to get
an early, just an early
idea of how they stack up this upcoming
weekend against Dallas. I think San Francisco's in that picture.
Those would be the three teams that I've discussed
today. Philadelphia, San Francisco, Dallas.
Yeah, no order. Now, is it a bunch of nonsense when I say
peak too early? Does that exist? Well,
I, I want to
I want to win and peak early.
And so, yeah, it's not a bunch of nonsense, but I want that problem.
I would like that problem.
You with me?
Relative to football, relative to the start of the season.
And I think that the best thing for a coach on Monday is to have won a game and you didn't
play well.
Because you can come in and watch the film.
You can come in and get your guys' attention.
You got the win.
and yet you can still coach them hard
and get after your work week, Wednesday, Thursday.
And so look, the wins are going to vary how you get them.
And then pretty soon, you're ready,
pretty soon this win they had against Arizona,
like in three weeks from now, it's gone.
It's just a win.
And so you want to win and win and continue to win.
And then there's certain things that take place.
New York's a perfect example.
You begin to learn how to win and then you begin to expect to win.
That's right.
We only got about 30 seconds left.
Do you ever miss sitting on the set at Fox?
Do you miss game day?
Yeah, there's moments.
Here's the biggest difference.
You're ready?
You can have a great day here.
We can discuss some topics and then they happen on the weekend.
And it's like bingo.
I talked about that.
And then you get in your car and you head.
home and then you get on the treadmill and you have your whatever that thing is you're selling
and then you invest in gold all right when you win on Sundays and you get out you get in the
locker room afterwards and you celebrate it and you get in the it's the euphoria of winning is
like a drug and that's the only difference because the camaraderie with with guys is fantastic what
we get to do is great. We get a haircut down the hall
here. Yeah, it's great. Yeah, I mean, it's
Your hair's looking, by the way, what don't we like about this?
Since you came to Fox, your hairs look great.
We're out of time. Sean Payton's best
