Chris Broussard, first things first. Going to join us live from New York. Love me some brew. You know, we've talked about this, and on shows like ours, it's fun. But I do think the game is more global now, and some of the top players are, you know, they're global stars. I still think the country that produces, by far and away, the most talent consistently is the United States.

And I think we'll kind of roll through these Olympics. There's been a debate that Kevin Durant, there's been a Durant kind of LeBron, the older guy shouldn't start, younger guys. I would argue Anthony Davis is playing better basketball than virtually everybody on the planet right now. What do you make of the construct of this team, the Jalen Brown situation is sort of weird? Are you okay with the construct in the minutes as they're being distributed right now? Well, first I'll say this. Jalen Brown should be on the team. He definitely got snubbed.

I mean, it's to add insult to injury, it's like, not only is he not on the team, but three of his teammates are on the team. You know, that just makes it worse. I'm glad he's passionate, not patch things up, but he talked to Derek White. He's supportive of him, so it shouldn't cause any friction there. But it's just, it's not right. I get them talking about, hey, we want a role player, a guy that will seamlessly be able to shoot threes and defend. and that's all he's looking to do in Derek White. But Kawhi Leonard wasn't that guy.

It's not like you had lost a role player. Kawhi Leonard was a star. And so you can't tell me we had a guy that was going to do the dirty work, so we had to replace him with such a guy. Jalen could be a great defender if he doesn't have to worry about scoring 25 points a game. So he'd fill that role and he shoots the three pretty much as well as Derek White. I mean, career-wise, they're the same percentage almost exactly. So I think he got snub, but overall the team is great.

Colin, I look at this kind of as the third iteration of the dream team. You obviously had 92, the originals. And then 2008, the Redeemed team, when we had to kind of put our foot down again, right, and win gold. And now you've got this iteration where we've got some all-time legends in LeBron, KD, and Steph. then you've got kind of the next group of superstars from America like Anthony Edwards and even guys in between like Anthony Davis. So this team, you know, and this Colin, I hate to say it, because we're going to roll this year.

There's no doubt. This is the last time I think we'll be able to definitely send a team and it's like there's no doubt we're winning. Yeah. Like I think we'll win more in the future. We'll still win some gold medals, but it won't be definitive every single year again like it is now when we send our best guys. So we talked about brawny earlier is I didn't have a problem in an incredibly

historically weak draft. The Lakers drafting a project and a G-leager because I think once you got past the 35th pick, most of the players were rotational or G-league players. He is worse offensively than I thought. He's just not an NBA player offensively. What do you make? Is it is the league? I mean, I've seen. Quami Brown, people have come out, been highly critical of it. How does the brawny move play privately around the league? Well, look, everybody sees that it's, you use the perfect word, project, okay? And it depends on who you speak to as far as how people feel about it.

Obviously, it's nepotism, but nepotism is rampant throughout the NBA. So some people will overlook that. And then there's those that talk about, wow, the father's son dynamic. LeBron coming from, you know, the situation he grew up in not knowing his father and doing everything he can for his son. And what a moment for him and the NBA. But you can't get past the fact that right now, Bronte is not ready. And like I said, Project is the perfect word. You don't typically think of six one guys as projects.

Right. But that's what Bronte is, right? And look, on a positive note, defensively, he looks like he can, you know, be a pretty good defender. And what his goal should be right now, and I'm talking about over the next few years, is finding his niche, which is defense, right? Yeah. And then over time, adding the three-point shot. What is really telling Colin is the fact that they almost never have him bringing the ball up. Yes.

Like he's a six-one player. He's going to have to guard point guards. He's got, obviously, not the basketball IQ of his dad, but a solid, smart basketball IQ. And yet they never have, they're not even attempting to have him learn point guard at this point. So he's, they're looking at him as a three-and-d guy, and obviously he's got to work on the three-pointer. The fact, people got excited about him hitting threes in the Chicago camp, remember, but that's against air. I mean, you've been around NBA guys in practice. When you just let him shoot three pointers by themselves, they drain a ton of them.

So he's got to improve that. I can't imagine the speed of the game is too much for him because he's used to playing against high-level talent. But when you can make threes alone, but you have trouble making them in games, and I'm not talking about just the Summer League, I'm talking about USC as well. that feels like you're rushing your shot because you have to get up quicker than you like to. And so he's got to work on that. But look, the goal ultimately, I think, is can he become a rotation player? I don't see him being a star.

I don't see him being a star, obviously. But can he ever get in a rotation? And I think with his defense and over time, his shot should improve like his dad's has, then I think maybe he can one day get in a rotation. Yeah, he's not a natural fluid offensive player. He's pretty robotic, and I do think his only way to make it's middle to bottom of the bench as a defensive player. So we talked about it this week is Julius Randall's a productive player,

but the Knicks are a small team, and losing Isaiah Hartenstein, they get smaller because Mitchell Robinson has injuries, is that small ball was always a bit of a figment of our imagination. It was just Steph Curry and Clay were the best shooting back court ever, is that you need size, and the league continues to get bigger and more international. traditional. Julius Randall, if he's signed by the Knicks, will end up being a five, and I just don't think he can defend them. I think they'll be small in a conference that has Porzinger's, Yonis, M. Bede, lots of young bigs. I think he's a good player, but a bad fit for the Knicks. And what worries me, Brew, is that when James Dolan was distracted over the last two years with the architecture of the sphere, he was away from the organization.

and the Knicks flourished in drafting and development. The sphere's done and it's a revenue machine. Now he's back to talking about how much he loves Julius Randall. Will this decision, what do you foresee is Julius Randall's future? He does have a market. I don't doubt that. I don't think he fits this Nick roster. What say you?

Well, look, if I could get a Carl Anthony Towns, and I don't think they can for Julius Randall, certainly I do something like that. I'm listening. If I'm talking to teams around the league, I'm listening to their offers or their interest in Julius Randall. But I'm not shopping him at this moment. Now, I'm not giving him a contract extension right now either, right?

He's eligible for those. I'm not giving him that. He's under contract this year, has a player option next year. So I'm just playing it out. And here's the thing, Colin, because you're right. A lot of people are saying, well, now to this Jalen Brunson's team, where does Randall fit? But when they first traded for OG Ananobe midway through last season,

Julius Randall was healthy and everybody was essentially healthy. And they won 12 of 14 games. They went 12 and 2 with Randall, Anobie, Brunson, and the rest of the guys. And then Randall got hurt. So if I'm the Knicks, I'm intrigued about, okay, let's try it. Right? If it doesn't work out, we have time to move Randall. But right now, let's give it a shot and see how I can work out.

Look, they need Mitchell Robinson to be healthy. It's as simple as that, because you're right. Losing Hardenstein is big for them. But if Robinson is healthy, you can still have a big guy in the middle. And at times, go small maybe with Randall at the five. The thing I don't like about him most of all is, and this is no mystery, he just has disappeared in the playoffs. He's just like 34% in the playoffs, 28% from 3.

His scoring average goes way down. And so that bothers me if I'm the Knicks. But I'm giving it a shot early, seeing how it works. And if I have to move him, I think I'll be able to. Yeah. So much of the NBA is fit. We've talked about this. I mean, there's a lot of players. LeBron just didn't like to fit with. And there's other guys he loved to play with. And we always look at talent. But Westbrook's got talent.

There's players he doesn't fit with. His stylistically, it doesn't work. So I think Julius Randall's productive, but you got to remember the next last year when they were playing well, they were playing four guards in Hartenstein. Hartinstein can guard the five. You can't put Julius Randall on a five. They'll get way too small.

Sample size. Sorry about that. Sorry. Well, thing in my throat there. It's a sample size. Small sample size. They play well with Hartinstein and center. It's not sustainable over 82.

and then 20-some-odd in the playoffs. Listen, I'm not the biggest Julius Randall fan, but the disrespect from you and Broussard is kind of somewhat shocking on this front. I've got to say, I'm sitting here stunned. Stunned. I wouldn't use that word, but okay. J-Mack with a news. No, no, no, no, no.

Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. So you remember yesterday we talked about Caleb Williams and Roma Dunzee of the Bears? They don't have contracts. They were unsigned. Well, unbelievably here in the last 24 hours, the Bears have inked a Duna Zay to a deal. Four years, 22.7 mil. It's 13.3 million dollar signing bonus.

Nice, happy for him. Bears put that out there. There are conflicting reports on Caleb Williams that his deal will be four years, 39 mil, 25 mil, signing bonus. But apparently, according to Mike Florio, the team is still going over some of the final language in the contract. and the Bears have not made it seem like this is totally a done deal yet. There is also a report that Caleb Williams was asking slash demanding, put in, you can't franchise tag me into the contract, and the Bears are saying, we're not doing that. So it's not totally done, but I'll go back to what I said yesterday.

A lot of just oddities and quirkiness over Caleb Williams. It's not like, hey, you're the first pick. Here's your deal. Sign, done, move on. It's not quite like that. Hard knocks is right around the corner. You're a little concern for, a little noisier than you like. You know, I don't like noise.

You like noise. No, do not like noise. I told my wife this morning we were talking. And I said, you know, I moved in the last couple months, and it's so quiet where I'm at. And I said, as I've gotten older, I like quiet. I seek serenity. There's plenty of noise at work, plenty of noise in life, plenty of noise on the my TV. There's a buzz about this kid, but I don't want

49ers thinking, oh, we have to sign IUC now that Pierceall's... Folks, take a deep breath. It's July. They're not signing Iyuk anytime soon. He's not holding out. I think we can agree. He's going to be there week one. Yeah, I think he will. But the trade deadline in the NFL

has been pushed back to week eight. Okay. So, by week eight, you're going to know if these two receivers the first and the fourth rounder for the Niners, you're going to have a good sense if they can contribute. That's when it gets interesting, because Pearsall is actually more of a slot, and Debo, you know,

they move Debo around as a chess piece. He's more of a slot. So we all think it's Ayyuk, but is it possible they've moved Debo? I think it's a horrible idea. I could send you the videos. They just paid Jennings. They're paying Jennings.

Kittle, Trent, Christian, Fred Warner, Bosa. They're paying a lot. A lot of dudes. So you can't quantify this so the numbers guys will hate it. But go look at the videos of when the 49ers come out of the tunnel before a big game. Who is leading the Niners?

It is Debo Samuel and Trent Williams. They are the alphas in that locker room. You can't just say, oh, well, let's move on from Debo. That's not a smart move. There's some moves in, you know, sport that you can't totally quantify. I think it would be a disaster to move off Debo Samuel. That guy is a special player, and you can't really scheme to defend him and McCaffrey at the same time. But they got a lot of mouse to feed, dude.

They are so lucky on Brock Purdy. They are paying a lot of guys top of the market. But Purdy's also elevated a lot of players on that team. Want to name a few? Brandon Ayuk. Final story is to Major League Baseball. The All-Star game was last night. Shohei Otani.

All-Star MVP as the AL-W won for the 17th time in the last 21 games. Do you know, Otani? they were talking about this last night. I watched the first six innings. Otani has an opportunity, and this is being discussed now, he's not pitching this year. He has an opportunity to win MVP as a DH. So he's not pitching or defending.

He's just got four at batts a night. Oh, that's awesome. So the guy is just different. Think about what he was engulfed with to start the season. Think about the injuries in the batting order around him. it's literally gone. It couldn't have been bumpier. He's got players hurt hitting before him and after him.

He's got starting pitching out so you can pitch around him more easily. He's not doing what he does, which usually elevates his game the pitching. He's out of that. And he is, my guess is, I mean, he's number one in merch sales, Dodgers attendance number one. My guess is he'll be MVP. And on just D-Hing. That's crazy. What do you think that life is like when you're, hey, you show up with the park, stretch,

and swing the bat. Four or five times, that's it? I like, I've said this before. I like the idea of being on the air regularly. I like the reps. I like movement. The idea of doing a show once a week, like Bill Maher 30 times a year, it would eat away at me.

I like, I need, I like the motion. I don't like trying to create a perfect show. I like being on the treadmill to some degree. The idea of just sitting around and every 40 minutes getting an AB, I think it would drive me nuts. especially if I was a great athlete and I couldn't have had. You know what I mean? It's not like, you know, again, it's not like I'm in my, I've passed my prime.

And so a lot of people just don't want to throw it out. there and especially when it's a big market team with a loud vocal passionate fan base and i said you know i'm reading a story that nathaniel hackett the offensive coordinator of the jets

that aaron rogers was given a heads up that they were going to hire arthur smith to call plays for their offensive coordinator how many super bowl teams have to babysit one of their top coaches that's essentially what that is And my take is, you look at the jets and they have the toughest opener in the league at San Francisco, 3,000-mile flight as they rebuild their O-line. So San Francisco, you look at that and think that's a tough draw. But there is a sense that weeks two through five at Tennessee hosting the Patriots, the Broncos, London, Minnesota, that's where they gain momentum. But Tennessee's home opener off a probable loss at Chicago and on a show. short week for the Jets because the Niners games on Monday night is not as easy as you think.

Add to the fact that you don't really know what Bo Nix and Sean Payton are, you won't have much tape, and the Vikings game is in London, and those are always weird games. Throw in the end of the season where it's at Tua, at Trevor Lawrence, Matt Stafford, at Josh Allen, and the Miami offense again, I don't think the schedule screams 12 and 13 wins. And I'll just say it now. I think they're an eight, nine win team tops. And what I used as an example, earlier I said, let me give you a couple of teams that people like,

but they have concerns about. So I'll give you some terms about these teams. This team has an excellent head coach, ascending star quarterback, variety of strong weapons, a great left tackle in their prime, and no clear-cut, favorite in division.

Super Bowl winning head coach, star quarterback still elite, dependable weapons, four top draft picks on defensive front and an incredibly stable and wealthy organization. That's the Rams and virtually nobody's picking them for anything other than a possible wild card spot in the weaker NFC. There's not all, there's not universal buyers on the Texans and the Rams, and you want me to buy into the Jets as an 11-12 win team. Let me give you things about the Rams, which would seem problematic. An unproven defensive head coach who has lost two out of three games he's coached

in the league. A prickly 40-year-old quarterback coming off a major injury. A rebuilt O-line with an old left tackle, an offensive coordinator that both Aaron and Robert Sala were okay, adding an assistant to help him call plays, and at best, impulsive shaky ownership. you don't love the Rams and the Texans and all the things that matter to me are much better. So my takeaway in this is you're trying to get me to buy into stuff and I don't think it's a

I don't think it's a Super Bowl viable stock. I think the Rams and the Texans may be just slightly out of the Super Bowl bubble. They're both very young. The Texans are very young on offense. The Rams very young on D. defense, but I think they're both on the precipice of if they broke through this year, both of them ended up in a conference championship.

I wouldn't be shocked. If the Kansas City Chiefs and the Texans met, I wouldn't be shocked. I wouldn't. Joe Burrell struggles to stay healthy. Buffalo's been disappointing. Diana Rusini this week on the Jets offseason this year has been different than last year. The Jets have done an incredible. job of just

quieting the noise. Colin, remember this time last year? We were going bonkers. I was on your show like every other day talking about the jet. Aaron looks amazing in camp. But in terms of tempering the emotions and the expectations, we are not going to hear Robert Salas

talk Super Bowl. They've learned. That is the one thing. That's my biggest takeaway of the offseason from my conversations with coaches, with players. They've been humbled. Well, yeah. They had to be. So, and I go back to, there's, you know, listen, Vegas makes mistakes.

Last year, I thought they were really light on the Rams. We were right. The year before, my big buy was Minnesota. So the last two years, there's been a team that I just didn't, this year, I think they're really light on Denver. I think the division's tough, but Harbaugh's got a brand new staff. They don't have a lot of ones on the outside. Kansas City still has wide receiver issues, and the Raiders are awful.

So I think Denver's going to be a seven or eight win team. I think they're going to be closer to the Jets. I think the Jets in Denver will be closer to each other than anybody wants to acknowledge. Vegas sees the Jets as a 10-win team and sees the Broncos as a five-win team. And I think they're both in that 7-8-9 category. I think so much of New York, so much depends on early success. First of all, you got to remember, NFL now preseason veteran offensive linemen don't play that's a fact secondly

offensive line is the most important uh instructive and cohesive unit that that's really cohesion is the offensive line there's a lot of talent on the defensive line but you can have individual max crosbie isn't necessarily reliant on a defensive tackle he's going to get to his guy tackles are relying on guards are relying on centers quarterbacks are reliant on all of them and the Jets have a rebuild offensive line with an old left tackle, an older right tackle, a rookie and Elijah Baratucko who struggles to say healthy. And they're not going to play much early. So that early success, like that Tennessee game has to be a win.

Because at the end of the season with a 40-year-old quarterback and an old left tackle, you can't be hobbling into those last five or six games. That is rough. So, you know, my take is if you told me the offensive line jell, in late September, then I think the Jets are interesting. That's when they're interesting. But if you're going into October and you're like, we got injuries on the O line, it's not a very good team.

You want to guess the Jets Titans point spread for week two? And you're right. The Jets are on a short week after playing season. They're on a short week. Tennessee's home opener. I would say Jets favored by four. Wow, nailed it. Exactly.

So the jets are four-point favorites in that one. Now, the next two weeks. Well, New England's the worst team in the league. And that's on a Thursday. So again, they get another short week. I would say Jets are favored by seven. Seven and a half. And then the following week against Denver,

Jets have 10 days off before your big showdown with Bo Nix. And they're at home against Denver. I think they'll be favored by six. Seven and a half. And I just looked at it. First 12 games, the Jets are favored in 11 of them. You didn't mention the first game. They're five and a half point underdogs in San Fran against the best team in the NFL.

Corey Chiefs fans. Okay. They're favored in 11 of their first 12 games. Can you imagine if I had to hire an assistant to help you reading Hirdline News? I mean, literally like, listen, about every third story with Jason, we have to fill in for him because he, you know, he struggles after the second story. Running out of gas in the third hour, yeah. It's very tired. It's wearing down.

I'm like LeBron, 39, you know, I just wear down late. Get gassed. That would not be great. Doesn't that worry you a little? Oh, there's certainly lots of concerns for this team, coward. Come on. The longest playoff drought in the NFL. It's brutal.

It's embarrassing. Was it 12 years? My kids will not root for the Jets because they know they stink. They're like, why do you root for the Jets? I always liked your kids. See you tomorrow. All right, we'll see you right now. Fred Rogan and Rodney Pete.

kids out there. It's pretty amazing the talent level right now. And I like, to be honest with you, the genuine enthusiasm and excitement Class A showed after the game

when he saved it for the American League. He's been there before, he's done it before. But I think there's something to be said about guys that look like they're having fun. Guys that seem like it means something to them. and I thought it was great. I thought the excitement was great.

So we'll talk about that. Lakers have made a fascinating hires, an assistant coach, if you've not heard. We'll get into that. But there's something with the Lakers. I just cannot figure out. I do not understand. It's sort of like a political campaign.
