Oh, pay! This is our Fox Sports Radio NBA analyst. I get his thoughts on this topic. Plus, we got a great best for last for you. upcoming. We got the news with Jason Stewart. No one covers the news like Jason Stewart. You can always make these comments

where you're like, yeah, if you actually dug in, it's not actually a compliment. It is a compliment because I think Jason does a good. But when I say no one covers the news, that doesn't mean no one covers it better. I didn't say no one covers it better. I said no one covers the news like Jason Stewart. You got it. The semantics are interesting.

Over the weekend, Damian Lillard won the three-point shooting contest and he won the All-Star Game MVP. And I think that's perfect. Because it just shows that none of that has anything to do with actually winning basketball games. And this is a really, really hard one. It's a really, really hard one. I think Trey Young's an example. I think Trey Young is

I think a lot of the an amount, maybe not a lot, a portion of the criticism can be unfair. Here he didn't originally make the All-Star game. Did you make the All-Star game

as a replacement? I didn't watch enough for the All-Stra game to actually know. I'm sorry. It was just terrible basketball. But Trey Young did not make the All-Star game and you're like, wait, what?

he's incredibly popular Atlanta. He's an amazing offensive player. He can pass, he can shoot, he's got crazy range. And there are nights in which, so he end up making the All-Star game as an alternate. And it's one of those like, let's not freak out. He's going to be an All-Star. But it does say something about,

especially the coaches and players and how they view him. Some of it's unfair, but some of it is the, there's an expression in basketball. You ready? every bad team has a leading score. Every bad team has a leading score. And what does that mean? Just because you score the most points does not a great player make.

And I would say, I'll say Carmelo Anthony was this guy when he was in the NBA as well. I know they went to one Western Conference Finals when he was with the Denver Nuggets. And, you know, when he went to the Knicks, they had to trade away. basically everything in the kitchen sink in order to get him. But Carmelo was the best scorer in the league. There was about five years there where he was the best score in the league. And then Kevin Durant surpassed him. But he was the best and he could score really at three levels, mostly at two,

three being three-pointer mid-range post. He was grade the post, grade the mid-range. And later in his career, he became a three-point shooter. But did he elevate his teammates? and did you win because of his points? And there's no greater social or basketball experiment than Damien Lillard to the Bucks. Right. Don't look at Drew Holliday and his career.

Type in Drew Holiday stats reference. You guys doing it? If you're at your cubicle, go ahead. Look it up, pull it up. So Drew Holiday, if you look at his stats, you're like, okay, Damien Lillard averaged 29 points a game. Last year, Drew Holiday, averaged 19 points a game. Well, I got to tell you, aren't they going to be 10 points better?

Remember, last year, they won 58 games, and they were balancing the playoffs. Part of the reason they were bouncing in the playoffs was Janus wasn't healthy, two of the games. Part of the reason was that Jimmy Butler just torched him the last couple of years. games. But Damien Lillard last year with the Portland Trillard he averaged 32 points a game.

So you sit there and go like, hey we have a guy who averages, what I say, 19? And we bring in a guy that averages 32 a game. Oh yeah, by the way, Damien Lillard 7.3 assists a game. Wow. It's amazing.

Okay. What about true holiday. 7.4 assists. Same thing. So they still pass the same. Only one guy scores 13 more points per game.

There's no way that the bucks won't be at least the same if not better, if not more explosive. And you can sit there and go like, all right, well, at least they'll average the same or more points per game. last year

the Milwaukee Bucks averaged 116 points per game 116 points per game this year they're averaging 122 points a game so they are averaging more but so is their opponent

and they're losing more games and even after changing coaches they've lost three they've lost seven of the last 10 three and seven are Doc Rivers so this is not me telling you that that Damien Lillard stinks

He's overrated. But what he is is it's really, really hard to see what, when winning is not the main thing, when your role is to be the best player and to score as much as you can,

and you're not expected to elevate your teammates what it's like when we put you in a championship environment. And I get it. Do I think ultimately it'll be better than it's been? Yes.

Yes. It's a problem. There's a process there. Process. There's a process of getting there. There's a process of working together and figuring out that we're new and the rotations are different. He's got to figure out to play within their defensive system.

And then that system changed once they added Doc Rivers. Like, I get all of that. But the shooting isn't worse. Case in point this weekend. everybody loves the guy like there's nothing not to like about Damian Lillard right into Weber State

it's been in the shadows of of Steph Curry in the West and they can never get past the Warriors and what did you always hear when they couldn't get past the Warriors wow he doesn't have the surrounding cast of Steph Curry now he does right now he does

remember every bad team has a leading score and at some point we have to make this assessment statistically great or really great. And this is not anything new. Do the kids know how Dominic Wilkins was statistically? Do they? Like Dominic Wilkins statistically was incredible and impressive. Like he went through like a five or six year stretch there

where he was right there with Michael Jordan to be the leading score in the NBA. and he was right there with Michael Jordan in dunk contest. But you know what he wasn't? He wasn't right there with Michael Jordan. There is not one human being alive that at this moment goes like, you know who was the equal to Michael Jordan, Dominique Wilkins? Do you know why? Because he couldn't win.

Because he couldn't win. And Dominic Wilkins is a Hall of Famer. And Dominic Wilkins was a great score. But he won a winning player. There really no other way to express it. You know? No other way to express it. Dominic Wilkins was the human highlight film.

Also, one of the great nicknames of all time, right? I mean, it's not like to call it. There's never been a human low-light film. Dominic Wilkins averaged 27, 30, 29, 30, 26, 26, 26, 28, 30, 26. He's the human highlight real? Okay. That wouldn't work nowadays, by the way, because nobody knows what a real is. But good, but good call.

It was the human highlight reel. Do people know, I guess maybe it will be because now people know what a real is because they think the real is on Instagram. But really a real is, I mean, a real, like it was a round. Right? Like, help me out, Jay Stu. I feel the need to just clear this up. I feel the need. The human highlight film.

It's human highlight film? Thank you. It was human highlight film? That's what I'm saying. Yeah, human highlight film is what I see too. Neek, Human Highlight Film. I don't anyone know who anybody called him Nika Zoid, but I do see that listed on social media. And by the way, to your point, like, remember the Hawks?

They became, at least on paper, a pretty good team when they had like Dogg Rivers and Kevin Willis and Tree Rollins, I remember, John Conkack and those guys. Like, they put some players around them and it still didn't work. No. No. Couldn't beat the Celtics. Couldn't beat the Bulls. couldn't beat the Bulls. Why?

Those guys were winning players. By the way, Dominic Wilkins, Kevin Willis, Doc Rivers, Randy Whitman, Tree Rollins, Cliff Livingston.

And to people go like, wow, Michael Jordan had Hall of Famers. Like, let me just explain something to people who aren't old enough or are disingenuous with the,

with the, with the, with the, with the, with the, Jordan thing. Like Scotty Pippin, when he got to the Bulls, everybody thought he was too soft.

Even through the first five years, Scottie Pippen was seen as there's a word, and I think we all know the word. Okay. It's another word for feline, right? And that's what Scotty Pippin was seen. And the Detroit Pistons thought they could punk him. Right?

The Jordan rules were not going to, him on his ass every time he drives, but make him try and win games by himself. And then they were just going to punk Scotty Pippen and punk the rest of the Bulls, and it worked for two years. And then Jordan got more physical. They put in the triangle offense where he passed the ball. And when all the help came to him, he found open teammates, and they won games. But like Michael Jordan's centers through six NBA titles were medical bill cart, right? Will Purdue and Luke Longley. And there is not any discussion

about the greatest players of all time or grades of a generation that anyone who ever go, you know who's one of the all-time greats? Luke Longley. No, but Jordan elevated him. Steve Kerr, people were like, oh, Steve Kerr hit all those shots.

Go and look at Steve Kerr's career. He was a career backup. And because of the fit of playing alongside Jordan, where all you had to do was guard your tail off and make shots and space within the offense. And that's all he did. John Paxson, same thing. He didn't achieve anything elsewhere. But there, he was great.

B.J. Armstrong. Same thing. Great. Yes, you need a specific type of guard that didn't need the ball in their hands. But he didn't have great dudes there. Even Ron Harper, who is an all-time, all-time great teammate of Jordan. like Ron Harper was a big score on the calves, tore his knee, and kind of hit and remake himself

into a guy who could just make shots and guard multiple positions. Jordan elevated those guys. The best of the best elevate people. And look, I'm sure there's LeBron fans like, look what he did when he was in Cleveland. That's a perfect snapshot of it. Now, he didn't have to do it in Miami. You didn't have to elevate Chris Bosch.

You didn't have to elevate Dwayne Wade. Didn't have to elevate Ray Allen. Those guys were already good. great players, maybe Bosch in terms of reputation-wise in the big moment, but to the, if you want to know why you can't have a legitimate conversation about Damian Lillard and Steph Curry, for example, because people are like, well, you know, they're kind of the same, right? Both great shoes. Steph gets more love because people like Steph more because of costing. No, they don't. Steph's better. How do I know when you surround Steph with great players, he elevates their level,

and we surround him with average players, he elevates their level. And look, there's only so much you can do. I get it. Steph had the one year where he led the league in scoring, and they were a 500 team, right? There's only so much you can do. So I don't expect more of Lillard last year, but I expect more of them this year. And the inability to find the perfect niche role elevate his teammates to a championship level when he has better teammates than he's had in years in Portland, that's a problem.

So, yeah, in the weekend. where playing defense and being a teammate, and doesn't mean he's a bad teammate? There's a soft spot there in between. He's not Trey Young defensively who just gives... The issue with Trey Young is he just gives up. Like go back and look at the Luca, do you have 72? A good portion of him he drove right at Trey Young,

and Trey Young just kind of gets out of the way. Like, I'm not going to do anything with that. Business decision. That's not Lillard. He's just not very good defensively, and there's not a ton of toughness and scrappiness on the defensive side. And the offensive side, he needs the ball.

And then you have Yonis. He's like, I kind of need the ball too. And if Chris Middleton is not as good as he used to be, but also needs the ball. He's not making Chris Middleton better. And it's one of those things. We look at Drew Holiday and we're like, wow, Drew Holiday averaged so many less points per game.

But there's so many little things that don't go in the stat column that you can't see. You don't understand at both ends of the floor that quite obviously Drew Holiday brought to the table that Damien Little has yet too. waking up a little bit this morning, right? And just full disclosure in Southern California it's one of those kind of dreary days, gray, everybody's kind of going back to work like gray, and it's not so much pouring as much as kind of constantly misting feels like what I would assume

Portland and Seattle's like but it is but we're kind of in the malaise we're also waiting for the second half for the the stretch run of the NBA season to commence and to help us out with that Old and Pauline's joins this year Fox Sports Radio NBA

analyst he played 15 years in the NBA OPE what do you think's going on with the bucks that they're not playing better even with the with Doc Rivers now as their head coach well a lot of it's going to be calm you know, I think, you know, that definitely happens because you fire a guy like AJ Griffin.

I'd say that he was the greatest coach around, but, you know, he had them with a winning record, and he would have been the coach for the All-Star game. And so to me, that has something to do with it. The trade for Damien Lillard, yes, it's a big move, but it's kind of fractured the team a little bit because that's not what they needed. You know, they won a championship a few years back, so, and, you know, you lose a lot, lot of defense. Yeah, you gain 25, 26 points, but to me, defense wins championships. It's always been the case. And so it's just a lot of different components. Now you bring in Doc,

expectations are going to be different because it's Doc Rivers, but it's the same team. You know, and, you know, funny aside, as long as Tenasus Tantacupo is on the team, there's going to be issues because he's taking up a space for a player, you know, because everybody's, trying to appease Janice. And to me, that's significant in itself, because that's a spot that could be used for somebody that could really help this team. Yeah. I only push back.

I understand what you're saying, right? It's like when a youth coach or even a college coach plays dad as his son on the team, it's like Daddy Ball, right? Like, why is Deionis even on this team? I mean, he can't play dead in a cowboy movie. on the other hand, if he knows his role and doesn't, you know, bitch and complain about playing time

as a good teammate, I would look at it. If I'm one of those guys like, well, that guy's not a threat to take my minutes away, so I don't care. I mean, as long as I get my mind.

I get that, but what's his role aside being Dionys'us' brother? That's his role. That's his role. He's the human drink of a cigar. So, for me, I'm not,

you know, but again, it's little things like that, all those little things put together, I feel is a problem for the Milwaukee Bucks because Doc has not had a training camp. And every team usually takes on the coach's persona. They have Adrian Griffith's persona for the rest of the year,

regardless of who you bring in. How do, and look, I understand that we're all going to look back at yesterday year and say it was better. But I think a blind man could say the All-Star game was better and more competitive than it is. But during your era, how is the All-Star game viewed? How is it played? It was viewed like, hey, we get a chance to go play.

Because I talked to a bunch of, you know, I had teammates that were All-Stars, and we talk about it. Well, number one, it was competition. They literally competed. They weren't worried about getting hurt. You know, that never came into the mindset of players because we felt it was a bad mojo if you even thought about getting hurt. So no one ever thought about getting hurt.

These guys today, that's number one for them. I don't want to get hurt. And whether it's physically, emotionally, social media, whatever, they just don't want to get hurt. And so plus, guys were making $500,000 a year, $750,000 a million later on. You know, these guys, now they make it $20, $30, $40 million a year. You really think they want to sacrifice for all of that? So to me, that's a big part of it as well. You know, when your superstars, I mean, LeBron James didn't play the second half.

You know, Yolkits, I'm like, dude, you're my guy. You're one of my favorite players. And he looked, I'm like, dude, you don't even need to be out there. That's not for you. Janice, with all his big talk about, I don't want to be friends with, you know, guys I play against. Now look where he is. He's buddy, buddy, and everything else having fun. So it's whack right now.

All right. The players have all the power. Yes, it's swayed. it swayed too much there. How much responsibility does LeBron bear? And I ask... Everybody does.

LeBron bears the bulk of it because he kind of started all of this. But so does Step Curry, so does Janus. Everybody that steps out on that floor, it is your duty as an all-star to give the fans something better than what you did the other day. But why do they not

take it as an honor and why does that, again, what has changed with the mentality of superstar NBA players that they don't feel the honor of being an All-Star? And they act like Marshall Lynch. I'm just here to get paid. Exactly. And it's unfortunate, but there was a shift, and I can't remember when it was, but it was after, like Kobe Bryant put a lot of pressure on people when he was alive, you know, and he played an all-star game because he was not going to be taking it lightly. Russell Westbrook was a guy like that, you know, but we don't have these guys in the all-star game anymore. Now we have the perennial guys.

You know, LeBron 20 years, KD, he's not trying to exert too much energy. These guys, they just, that's where they are right now. Their mentality is, I'm okay. I'm here, so I don't get fine. and we'll run up and die. I swear to God, summer league at UCLA, where Rico Heinz

is more comparative than what we had, but no one worries by getting hurt in the summer. Yeah, I know. I don't understand it. The whole getting hurt thing, like they work out and play harder

and, oh yeah, by the way, like doing all those dunks, you could very easily come down wrong and land to hurt yourself anyway. Luca could have popped his back out on that dumb-ass dunk at town.

Let's get to what's real. are the Lakers in any way a threat in the West? I don't believe so. I mean, it's status quo. No changes were made. It's the same team. You know, Tori and Prince is going to knock down shots in the first half, and then he's going to lose his shot in the second half.

LeBron's going to pick his spots, you know, when he wants to play defense, when he does want to play defense. AD, you know, he's been stepping up quite a bit now, especially with the injury issues or the hurt issues. so he's been trying to play through a lot of the grimaces that he makes. And so to me, outside of that, I mean, it's still status quo. You know, nothing's changed. DeAngelo Russell was playing for, you know, because he heard his name in trade talks.

Well, guess what? You weren't traded, so he's going to revert back to normal. And so to me, I'm not buying on the Lakers. I mean, again, Lake a fan. I'm just not sold on them. Yeah, I don't, like DeAngel Russell and Jared Vandibilt were unplayable in the playoffs last year. and yet you brought them back and now your expectations are for them to help you

in the playoffs that defies kind of logic to me I get that Gabe Vincent being out essentially the whole year has hurt you but I don't think to the point where you still have DeAngelo Russell and Jared and Villain but you're trying to start him so I don't get how that works but Gabe Vincent is not step courage

No no no I I'm saying you know the excuses that people will make about Dave Vincent, right? And I'm with you. I'm not buying it. I'm saying, if you really wanted to win, why would you bring back DeAngel Russell and Jared Vanderbilt when you couldn't win with them last year? Yeah, and that's a great

question. And, you know, they just didn't really want, because everybody expected them to make the moves, so they did the unexpected. It's a bold strategy, cotton. That's what it is. What about the Clippers? The Clippers have gone through stretches where they look like the best team in the league. Tilu is an unbelievable in-game.

adjuster, but they are, they're an ISO-heavy team in a league that's kind of moved away from that. And you played for them, you know, it's the Clippers. Everybody's waiting for something bad to happen. How real of the Clippers? And the Immortal Wars of Scalian color purple, until you do right by me. They are snake-bitten, and it's unfortunate. I mean, they have some great talent. I mean, Kauai's played some of his best basketball, relatively injury-free this.

year, Paul George, I mean, you know, all those guys, Russell Westbrook's giving them a boost, and some of the young guys that they have, you know, they really stepping up, you know. So I really like what they have. They have the bigs that don't complain, they just do their jobs, you know, Plumley and Zubats. But we just have to wait and see what happens because, you know, the clippers are two different teams. They're regular season team and a playout team, and those two. teams are way different from one another.

And so to me, if they could get some of that, like you said, with Tileu's in-game adjustments and bring it to the playoffs and to stay solid, I think they have a shot. I really do. I pick them over the Lakers as far as who has

a better chance. Oh, yeah. I don't think that's... I don't think that's... What do you do if you're the Warriors? No changes, unfortunately, but the warriors, they need a big. You know, And it's sad that, you know, they had a young guy like a wise man. They couldn't develop, but they need a bigger body.

Those guys, they just are undersized. Everybody's playing out of position. But as long as you have Steph Curry, you have a chance because he puts pressure on defenses. You know, Clay Thompson's got to step up. The other night, you know, the 35 points coming off the bench. But is that going to be a permanent thing? We don't know. But, you know, I think Kaminga, the way he's played this year is a big.

big boost, but they got to have bigger bodies because this league, the top guys are big and strong. You know, Yannis, Joker, and B, those guys are huge. And that's what a problem always arises when they have to go against teams that have big bodies. You know, they had a great league. They had a great game the other night against the Clippers. Ty Lucas kicked out. All of a sudden, they forgot how to play basketball all over again because the Clippers just kept pounding and pounding, pounding inside. You know, they knocked down some shots, but it was just, they got worn down.

Okay. What about the Celtics? You look in the East and you go, the Sixers, we don't know if Embed comes back and what that all looks like. You know, the Knicks are fun story. I love Jalen Brunson. I don't think they're there yet to beat him in a series, right? Miami, whatever Magic Miami had figured out last year, it seems to have discipline. really does.

I'm looking around and you're like, you know, there's a lot of decent teams in the East, but the Celtics should come out of the East. On the other hand, a very offensive-minded team. What do you think happens to the Celtics? I believe the Celtics are one of the top teams to come out of the East, but they have some of the same problems that a lot of other teams have. You know, it's almost like you got Jason Taylor and Brown, for example. They've similar guys.

Okay, but they have to be on at all times for you to win. And yet, you know, Pazigas has a history issue with injuries, again, just like an Embed. So it's like, is he going to be ready for the last part of the season and the playoffs? So all these unknown components are in play right now. And my guy, Kelvin Gibbs was on the other team. Kelvin Gibbs played at Pepperdine, 6566, just a monster post player, power for it. He's now a police officer. Kelvin, thanks for what you do, defending, keeping us safe in Berkeley, California. Imagine being a police officer in Berserkley, right?

Sounds like a job that's not that much fun. Anyway, I got into a, this might shock you, trash talking. with a French point guard. Surprising. We were not able to bridge international gaps in relations. I was putting to the scoreboard. He did not understand the term scoreboard when I was talking trash. So we're talking trash.

He drives in, gets his shot blocked by two of my teammates, who I said, get that blank out two times female dog, and he didn't react well to it. We go chest to chest. And I turn around, and the same two teammates are punching their, the two guys they're guarding like legit like boxing stances, really good left hooks.

I get thrown out of the game for being an instigator, which is probably accurate. 14 seconds to go in my last professional game. So I'm walking off the court blowing kisses to everybody. I get into the vomatorium. That's the actual name for the tunnel that takes you from the locker room to the court. And I hear this roar

behind me. I turn around and here's Frenchie coming at me. Somebody grabbed from behind. Total melee in the vomatorium. And I did okay. No, it's not a scratch on me. We ended up fine. A lot of testosterone flung around.

Now, the downside to the bird is can't really hug them, right? And they actually usually outlive you. And there's the bird poop thing of a jig. But if you have a big enough house, you can keep them in the right area and they're a little

kind of bird cage and can't talk back to you, right? There's some kind of cool things. If you've ever had a friend with a bird, you're always like, that's kind of, I don't know if I, I kind of more be the uncle than like to be the parent in that one to come and visit the bird, but I've seen people, they have their little bird and they got it on their shoulder, they go everywhere with them. Kind of seems cool. And I mean, in comparison to like the reptiles, you know, would you rather have a bird or a snake?

And as much as there'll be people that come over to your house and don't love birds, you have people that are deathly afraid of snakes. You don't want that in your house, right? True. Number four. Pig. Yeah, a pig. How does pig make the list?

I have a friend, my friend Melody, she has a pig. They have a pig. Then they're actually, pig's kind of cool. Just kind of walks around and very much like a dog. You know, they get the little curle, little tailor, super cute. You know, and obviously they don't roll in their own feces when they're in your house. actually pretty clean animals when you get them out of the pig pet. Pigs kind of a fun animal.

And they're smart. They can be taught. They can be house trained. Yeah, a pig. Number three. Pet I always wanted to have, and I know there's a downside to it, but they seem really cool, is the ferret. You didn't know what a ferret was until I told you. I thought it was a hamster.

No, no, no, no, no, no, no. Hamster gerbils are, I mean, frankly, they're like an appetizer to the reptiles that you can get in your house. Yes. And I had a bad hamster death incident. My sister had one. Died during Super Bowl 16. I believe that was the Montana Marina Super Bowl. Never been able to get over it.

Just, you know, the gerbils, they don't do that much for you. Whereas a ferret, super inquisitive, they'll get in your drawers, they'll be all over the place. They do bite. And if you don't wash them, they stink. But they're like little weasels. And they're like, again, they're super, super curious. Ferret number three. Number two.

Cat. Rest in peace. I don't really know. My cat, Louis, was an indoor, outdoor cat, and we haven't seen him in... It was around New Year's. So, either he's hanging in a coyote's belly, or he's in somebody else's house.

It's super cool little all-black cat. But I personally, I love cats. Cats are, they're arrogant. They kind of come to you when they need something, you know, very entitled. they're regal um and you can have

multiples of multiple cats I like cats they're not dogs but they're they're still very cool number one the dog the dog um

and I have two dogs I have the quintessential dog in Luca dogchich he's a he's a brown he looks like a mixture of Benji and the dog in um uh

uh grinch you know And then I have a sheepadoodle who is Odell Beckham Jr. Jr., great dog. The dog is the number one animal on National Love Your Pets Day. That's the best for last. All right, so look, we're getting

closer and closer to, I guess it's not really second half of the NBA season, but the stretch run of the NBA season. And if you download this podcast, you'll get a little bit of football, a little bit of basketball. But I think it's fair. If LeBron is the king of the NBA, and if it's been his league,

it doesn't mean all fault falls on LeBron.
