Matt Hasselbeck now joining us live as you see him on Monday's 18 years, three Pro Bowls. I don't care how great a quarterback you are. For years, I always felt about the bills.

God, they could use a number one running back. And they could use another tight end. But it was interesting yesterday, Matt. They were missing Kincaid. They were missing Keon, the rookie receiver. they were missing their right tackle. They still almost had 400 yards against what we perceive as the best DC and the best defense. Like, I don't know, I feel like this is an elevated version of the last five years of Buffalo's offense.

Do you see that or no? Well, you know who they were not missing was Josh Allen. I mean, they had him. I think there's a familiarity right now with these two teams, whether it's Spags or Sean McDermott used to coach under Andy Reed. These guys know each other. It's not like you go into the game plan or kind of. of going to the week you get your game plan book and you open it up like who we got this week like these these are the two teams like these are the teams you know you're going to meet late in the year

and uh you know spags and you know what they're going to do you're almost doing what you think they're not going to do you saw that last touchdown run that you just showed yeah uh kind of a man coverage situation spags goes zone uh Josh Allen immediately is like oh he tried to get me with this I'm going to get him with that like they just know each other like that he put the cape on and and he did the rest. But an incredible game, and I can't wait for the rematch. You know, and yet, it's really interesting. As many times as you face Mahomes or Josh Allen, they can still get you.

Like, there's no code. But it is interesting. Pittsburgh has found the code on Lamar. Like, his numbers drop off. And, you know, my guess is, because he's such a, stylistically, he's such a unique player, there's a little Rubik's Cube thing where Lamar is unbeatable against the NFC. Because if you've never faced him, you don't know quite what the heck that is. But Pittsburgh faces him so often, it does feel like, Matt, whatever it is,

they've kind of, to some degree, the numbers tell you. They've figured Lamar out. What are they doing in Pittsburgh? Is it just Tomlin and the personnel? Yeah, so just kind of going back to that other game just a little bit. I don't think the bills aren't intimidated by Kansas City because they feel like, hey, we have our own Patrick Mahomes. So we're not like, we have confidence because we know who we got. You like your guy.

We like our guy. That's the mindset. I think when other teams, you mentioned they play Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens, like it's in their head. They're like, oh, man, crap, dude. I hope I don't get, like, embarrassed to go viral because Lamar makes me look bad. You know, he's more athletic. This team's more physical. We know their identity.

I hope I don't get the Derek Henry Stiff. That's what's in everybody's head. That's real. Guys actually talk about that. They say that out loud. The physicality, the athleticism. It's a fear. Pittsburgh does not fear that.

There's familiarity. Once again, I think they've got an elite head coach who sets a tone, sets a message, a formula, technique. He's very good at fundamentals defensively. And I don't think, like yesterday when I watched that game, and I never really ever really, ever would say that I ever feel this way when I watch Baltimore.

They looked like the less athletic and the less physical team. And you could point it down to that last two-point play. There was one team that was physical and there was one team that was less physical. And that's why I believe the Steelers have their number. That's why I believe the Steelers played so well. There's a saying, I used to coach high school football with Rob Nikovic. He would use this Bill Belichick term all the time. No edge, no chance.

If you can't win the edge, you have no chance on most plays. And you saw on that play, they didn't win the edge. They had a wide receiver on a defender, didn't win the edge. And then their pullers don't matter. And I don't care who you have a quarterback if you don't get the edge. So that was the difference yesterday. I thought physicality. And again, these two teams will meet again.

And we'll see what it looks like the next time. So San Francisco is five and five. And football more than any American sport, you get old and banged up really quickly. You're not getting tackled in baseball or basketball, although people did kind of tackle Shaq. But the point is, in football, you can be a really good team, and then you can get really old fast. So McCaffrey comes back, and now Kittles out. And I just feel like, Matt, the window closed. It happened with the Seahawks.

All of a sudden, you're like, they're great, and then there's always a corner hurt or a pass rusher hurt. I don't see a lot of the special I saw three years ago. Do you? Well, they got to stay healthy. I mean, obviously, you don't have kiddle. I think Bosa is a big thing, too. He played just a little bit. I don't think he's really been healthy.

Now, he's going to be out for a little while. Like, if you lose your elite pass rusher, like if you lose that elite guy that can be an absolute game changer, like an MVP-type guy, it's going to change the whole complexion of your team. But I also think this is a really tough division. Like, there's other divisions that you look, around right now you literally have people like packing it in benching their

quarterback for financial reasons putting guys and stashing them away on the IR signing people off of other people's practice squads to like sort of like juice up their roster for the off season that's what's happening in some divisions that's not happening in the NFC West this is a tough division you've got Arizona who's an underrated team very much so Matthew Stafford and the Rams are dangerous when they're healthy Niners are a contender to me Gino Smith's fighting for his job for this year and next year trying to be the long-term solution there. I just think that this is a very competitive division that's going to go down to the wire.

And, you know, that's why the San Fran, like that, they don't look like dominant like they have. I just think the division's a lot more competitive. So I want you, Herbert in the first half, Burrow and the second put on a clinic. That's awesome. We're going to show highlights. Just tell me what you see as an 18-year quarterback. start with Herbert and go to Burrell. What do you see? What do you love? Yeah, Herbert is in a run-first offense with Jim Harbaugh. There's an identity, a formula, a plan. And if I could just use one word,

explosives. Like every play was an explosive. He passed for 14 first downs yesterday, and they all were like double digits, 20 yards, 29 yards, 19 yards, 12 yards. And to guys like, you know, it's Will Disley, it's Quentin Johnson, it's Ladd McConkey came through a huge, Like, this was like, they're not like huge spenders at the skill positions. And yet this quarterback is, you know, a term I like to use, Amazing Marinera sauce. Like he was outstanding. And, you know, I think just like the other part of it is he's athletic enough to run,

but he's running with his eyes downfield. The whole time that he's looking to run, he's really looking to pass. And if it's not there, then I continue to run. So he's a great guy for young quarterbacks to study. He really is one of the best. Okay. Now let's talk Joe Burrell, second half. So like totally different, not a run first team.

This is a pass first team. They use checkdowns to the running back as an extension of their run game. And so that's why I think they're most dangerous on a comeback situation. But this guy, I mean, listen, whether it's Jamar Chase or T. Higgins or really anybody, the chemistry that he has, the recess ball, the playground ball. You know, he's pointing around, oh, you're double covered. I don't care. He's inside.

One guy's inside, one guy's outside, split him. Let's find a way. And I think, like, the way he does it, though, is, again, with good fundamentals and technique, two hands on the ball,

eyes down field. He's looking to run, but he's really not. He's looking to throw. And so maybe not as explosive, like all the time, but I would just say, just like Justin Herbert,

ice in his veins. I think there were three times yesterday. On fourth down, he had huge, huge plays, huge conversions, touchdowns. And so, like, I just think, again, if you're looking for, if you're trying to figure out what is a franchise quarterback, like, what is it? It's the ice in their veins. It's the cool, calm, and collected. It's the tangibles, you know, the arm and the

size and the ability, the mobility and all that, but it's also the intangibles. The way these guys intimidate the opponent without saying a word. They intimidate the defensive coordinator. Like, the chargers are up. A lot of people are usually thinking all with that score, I'm going to bed. most of the country's like not with Joe Burrow, this game's not over. That's what you saw last night. So I think Detroit's offensive roster is virtually perfect.

Deep, slot, power runners, Twitch, tackles, golf. Did you ever face in your career a roster and you were on the opposite sideline and you thought they just got more good dudes? Like almost a flaw.

Did you ever face? Because I think the Lions offensively, I don't think teams know what to do. It's like seven Pro Bowl level players, maybe nine guys that can make a Pro Bowl. Did you ever face anything like that? Yeah, no doubt. Many times, many years. When I was on the Packers, people probably felt that way about us. But I got to Seattle, and it was the greatest show on turf.

There were some great teams in San Fran with Jerry Rice and T.O. and J.J. Stokes. And never mind the great players that they had on defense. I remember playing against the Indianapolis Colts when it was just a ball hall of famers, Dwight Franey, Robert Mathis, Reggie Wayne, Mark. Marvin Harrison, Peyton Manning, Marshall Falk, Edger and James, rather, I should say. It just was like, you know, what are you going to do? Like, what can you do? And I do remember playing the Baltimore Ravens, though.

I remember playing the Baltimore Ravens defense. And I remember Mike Holmgren one day said to, you know, me said to the offense, he said, listen, part of the reason these guys have so much success is people go in there and they play timid and they play scared and they're like, oh, shoot, it's the Ravens defense. And they don't play well. It plays into their hands. we're going to do the opposite of that. We're going to cut it loose.

We're going to be offensive. We're going to be aggressive. And it really is just like a mindset change. And at first when he said it, I thought it was crazy. But I really think that's the only way that you can go in and play some of these teams. You've got to kind of beat them at their own game. And it's a lot easier said than done. No, I watched Mike Tyson win fights the minute he entered the ring.

And it was the tall, long guys that would punch back. Even guys that were average fighters. I remember a guy named Mitch Blood Green, who didn't last very long, but you had to attack Tyson. If you didn't attack Tyson, he was a pit bull on a beach ball. It was over. And I watched Detroit, and it's just so fluid and it's so effortless and everybody has time. I do want to touch on this. This is a team because- But, Colin, can I just say on that real quick?

I just really think, I think I said it to you first. This is a situation where these guys have been picked on for years and years and years. and Dan Campbell has sold them something, and I think everybody, even the fan base is bought into it. Like, here's how we get back. We punch the bully in the mouth, and it started on primetime against Dallas, and this team really hasn't looked back.

They're the new bully. Like, the Detroit Lions have earned the respect of the entire league. There's no doubt about that. Yeah, and they're doing it the right way. It's not, they can be clever and tricky, but they basically lean on you. I mean, they're not messing around. There's a Baltimore field to it where it's like,

guys, we're going to push your round for three and a half hours. Right. And the only difference is, like, they'll casually just throw in a hook and lateral for, like, 10 yards just for fun. Just for fun. They're the brawn, but they're also kind of the brain and the flash. Yeah. I want to end with this.

A lot of people aren't watching because, you know, Herbert and Mahomes get the love. Bow Nix has had seven straight games where it's like, oh, yeah, this is the Drew Breeze comp thing. I know you're watching, but Sean Payton text me this week. He's like, he's got a way better arm than all you analysts think. It's like, this kid can throw it. And yesterday you saw a couple of throws by Beau, one of them sidearm kind of Stafford-like. I know we love Jaden Daniels, but the last seven weeks, this is the rookie quarterback of note.

If you look at the data, your thoughts on him. Yeah, he's playing great. This is a match made in heaven. It really is. Now, listen, the defense is playing well. The special teams is playing well. And I think that allows an offense to grow with a young quarterback. But just the poise, the experience of both of these guys,

whether it's head coach we're talking about, who's done it before with other quarterbacks, or if it's this quarterback who's had a ton of reps in college, I think he benefited from the time that he spent in college with different quarterback coaches, different head coaches, all that kind of stuff. But no, he's playing outstanding football. And I think I mentioned to you before,

there's some things that you can say to a quarterback that allow you to play free. And some people don't know it, but like some people do. And Sean Peyton is a guy that understands how to talk to a quarterback. One example that I've used here before is, you know, a lot of quarterbacks throw interceptions on third down because they don't want to walk off the field. They're stubborn.

They're arrogant. They're whatever it is. They're not humble yet. But something that a coach can say is like, hey, you just get me completions. Let me worry about third down conversions. Like, in a sense, like, there's another way to say it, like, let our punter punt. Let our defense play with a long field. Like there's things you can say to a young quarterback that's just like he just plays free.

The ball's out of his hands. He's not taking sacks. He's not turning the ball over. Like the coach said, hey, it's up to you. Mike Holmgren used to say to me all the time, you're an artist, not a blacksmith. I'm going to call the play. You play. You paint your canvas as you go.

This is your painting, not mine. And so like it was some of those things that I think that throughout my career, when you have a coach that knows how to speak into you, versus as a quarterback versus I'm sure what other young quarterbacks aren't getting. You see the fruits of that. And I think Bo Nix is off to a great start. I want to end with this. I was joking earlier that we watched Jake Paul and Tyson and you're like,

you can really see the gap in athleticism. And I watched Anthony Richardson, who I thought played really well for the Colts, like really, really well, not just running around. In fact, I thought Shane Stuyken should have run him more. And then I watched Aaron. and the gap was like noticeable.

Like, like, and I thought to myself, did you have a moment? Go to your last year, an epiphany. You're driving in. It's a practice when you just said, maybe it's a film room. And you're like, yeah, I think I'm done. Because the gap between Anthony, Aaron was digging and dunking it and that last drive and you're like, man, there is a gap here that is really noticeable. And I don't think Aaron's reached it yet.

But did you have a moment? Yeah, for sure. Like, I made a lot of moments, to be honest with you. But I remember my last year in India, I was the oldest quarterback in the league. I'm 40, and I'm playing James Winston, the youngest quarterback in the league. And I think there was so much made of it, and I almost got insecure about how old I was. But I think what I decided to do was play a different style of football. Like literally just play like a 40-year-old, not play the way I had always played.

And I grew up a Red Sox fan. it was Roger Clemens and Bruce Hurst. And I remember, like, some of those guys, when you lose your fastball, you need other pitches to go to. And so I just really, I tried to, like, lean into what can I do as a pocket passer? How can I be more of a point guard instead of thinking that I'm, like, the quarterback that style of play that I always used to play. But for every quarterback, that's different.

And for some guys, it's easier than it is for others. I think what just speaking on Anthony Richardson, though, what stood out to me is here's a guy that was starting, then just got out of nowhere benched, and then kind of took a step backwards to take two steps forward. I thought he looked like a much better, much better quarterback this time around. And sometimes that's the best thing you can do for a young guy. You can have him sit out and watch and watch from a veteran and say like, oh, okay, I don't have to try so hard. I can just kind of do this. And I thought that's what you saw from him yesterday. Yeah, he made a huge, huge leap. And some of his throws were tough.

throws downfield. This was not underneath stuff. And then, of course, when he's running over people. Well, him as a runner is incredible. I think for him, it's going to be consistency. And, you know, a lot of people get wowed by, like, the deep ball and all that kind of stuff. But typically in an offense, the deepest throw on schedule throw is about 48 yards from the line of scrimmage. And that's why you hear guys like Sean Payton saying, like, O'Nicks has plenty of arm. He's got all the arm I need. But meanwhile, there were guys at the combine throwing. at 80 yards in Lucas Oil and shorts. And, you know, scouts are getting excited.

But guys like Sean Payton, they know what the real football, you know, what real football looks like for a quarterback. And so I think consistency is the thing that Anthony's got to work on in Indy. Look at you just grinning. Are you rooting against the Buckeyes here? I don't root against... You root for chaos, I know. I root for... It's just... I just see Georgia against the Buckeyes here. Tennessee this weekend? I'm wrong. I thought

I had Tennessee being better than this. Georgia looked. So George's clobbered them and then clobbered Texas. Georgia's got wins where I'm like, okay, that's a playoff team. I don't care what their record is. You don't want to see them in the playoff. I do. Oh, I want to see Georgia in the playoff. No, no, I mean, if you're an

opponent, you don't want to see Georgia. That's like a really stacked team. They went to Austin and they could have had 20 sacks against the Longhorns O-line. I mean, I'm telling you, that Georgia team, I don't care what their record is. I don't care. That's a playoff team.

Okay. All right. Well, Clack's watching, and he's going to go off on you Wednesday again. Let's start with Bo Nix. He's your favorite quarterback in the NFL. I'm surprised he hasn't been booked to come on the show this week. Guys going off. I mean, seriously, career highs yesterday in passing yards, touchdowns, completion percentage. He won October

Rookie of the Month. And listen, he's closing in on Jaden Daniels for Rookie of the year. It's become a real race colony. His last seven games, he's been over a hundred passer rating. Here's Sean Peyton on his quarterback. You feel like, you know, you're in good hands. He's smart with the football. He makes plays with his feet. You know, there's a lot of times you're calling place for certain looks. The looks aren't there. He's got that ability to create and all the while protect the football.

I thought he played really well. Yeah. He did play well. What's that smirk about? You love being right. I mean, I thought I love being that. You You love being right on bonus. Listen, a lot of football left, but the schedule does look good for them. They're at the Raiders this week, and then versus Cleveland, should be two wins. They have the late buy, which everybody covets because you're really exhausted, long season. But after the buy, Colin, Colts, Chargers, Bengals, Chiefs. There is a world where they go 0 and 4 at the end and miss the Blas.

Come on. I got to tell you something. I like the Colts roster. Colts are good. No, I think they got dudes. They got receivers and corners and pass rushers. And they have a quarterback who can move? I thought Anthony Richardson looks really. It wasn't just dink and dunk stuff. That was the other guy. He was throwing the ball down the field.

Preseason, Bow Nix was plus 1,000 to win rookie of the year. Currently, he is plus 300. Explain that to the audience. So you would have made a lot of money if you bet Bo Nix in the preseason to win rookie of the year. Now you win significantly less. Jane Daniels still a considerable favorite. minus 400. So you got to bet $400. How about Drake May? He showed you a little something.

That's the Tua class. Remember the Tua, Herbert, Burrow, I think Jalen Hertz was later in that class. But also, Marvin Harrison Jr. has played well this season. Brock Bowers is looking like it was a really good draft. Really good draft. But vote next, I got to give it to you. I mean, we had Broncos, obviously, we knew there, but that was a layup. I didn't think 386 kind of beat down Kirk Cousins chased to the bench.

And especially when it came off that gutting loss to the Chiefs where they outplayed them. I stayed away. I told you I liked the Broncos in this game, but I stayed away. I'm like, how are they going to react? Bonix outplays Mahomes and they lose. Are they going to go into the tank emotionally? It was the opposite. And you also have to think like Sean Payton and Russell Wilson, ugly breakup, but both have thrived since, you know, going their separate ways, which I like.

well run, this and that. and then you get trade to the Chargers, and they were really bad last year. Was your first thought, uh-oh, what am I getting myself into? You're going from Ohio State to the Ravens. Were you worried a little bit? Is this,

or did Harbaugh make you feel like, okay, this is going to work? Oh, no, I wasn't worried. That's why I came here, actually. I knew that this team had all the talent in the world, and I know the hard balls, I'm like part of the family, So I knew that the culture that we're going to bring or that coach Jim was going to bring. And I wasn't worried one bit.

I knew we were going to come in this year and we're going to do some stuff that is going to shock the world, you know, because so much talent on this team. Like just watching from afar, you know, even when I was on the Ravens, you look at the charges and you see Derwin James. You see Justin Herber. You see Joey Bosa, my fellow Buckeye. You see all these players that are so talented and you just wonder like, what is it? What is it? So whenever I got the opportunity, I was like, you know what? I'm going to go there because I think I can go help these guys win and I can go

change the organization around. Justin Herbert, I love him. So he's quiet. He's not on social media. For somebody that hangs out with him every day, explain to our audience what he's like because he's about as humble as a great athlete in America that tremendous is. Yeah, he's a special kind of human being.

You know, he's amazing. Like, he seems quiet to you guys, but he's definitely not quiet. He's a brother. He's my brother. Like, I love him so much. Like, you can joke around with him. He jokes around.

He laughs. He, but when he's serious, he's serious, for sure. You know, he does that. You know when he's locked in. You know, he's a beast when he's locked in, too. So, you know, he's versatile. I guess you can say that he's versatile. He can

kid around with you or he can be like, hey, let's lock in. You know, so I think that's he's a special human being. Explain Jim Harbaugh, everywhere he goes. It could be Stanford, Niners, Michigan, Chargers. He not only turns it around, JK. He does it in six weeks. It's a totally different. I mean,

this team last year was finesse. Now you're as physical as the Steelers or your Ravens. What What is it with Jim? What is the secret sauce? Man, I honestly can't tell you the secret salt because he's unique. He's a lot different than his brother. You know, as far as the work that we put in, it's the same.

It's almost the same. It's identical. But him as a person, he's unique. I've never met anyone like Coach Harbaugh. Coach Jim Harbaugh. I've never met anyone like him. And I mean that in an amazing way. Like, he's just like, I remember in the spring, he's out there working out with us.

Like getting it in. He's serious, though. Like, he's not just bullcropping around. He's actually seriously. Like, he's trying to get this work in, you know, get better. You know, he's different. You know, he's genuine. And, you know, some of the things he says, it might come up funny, but it's so real and it's great.

You know, and I love him. I love him as a coach. And as a person, he's the best. the um it's it's interesting when you don't know the history of the chargers as much but if you live out west they've had great players forever but there's a term called chargering where they outplay teams and lose i mean that's literally a term you again you're with baltimore ohio state that you guys win is there was a time last night when it was close it was tied and you were so good early and i thought oh my god oh no they're not going to but it was funny both defenses show you

up late. On the sidelines, when you took the ball over late, was there a sense, guys, we're going down, McConkey, JK, we're going to score. What was the huddle like? Oh, yeah, man, we were confident. we come from winning pedigree, winning culture, you know, and it showed up last night, and no matter what happened, you know, when they came back on us, nobody flinched, nobody batted and I. We were locked in, we knew we were going to win the game, you know? So it's a testament to what Coach Jim has brought to this team, the culture and everything. How special is it for you? You've been hurt back-to-back seasons that you're healthy, you've Rehab, rehab stinks.

It's awful. Is this feel like a really unique special year for you because the pain and the injury and the rehab you've gone through? Yeah, this year is a, it's a year granted by the Lord, the Lord Jesus, you know, because you think about some of the injuries that I had, most people don't come back from. And, you know, they don't, and if they do, they don't, form at a high level, you know? Like, I tore my, so in like a two year span, what we're talking about, I tore my ACL, LCL, my hamstring came off, my meniscus, and it took three surgeries just to get back from my knee, you know, and then I come back. I finally get back healthy, and then in the first

game, I blow my Achilles, which a lot of people say, oh, you can't come back from my Achilles, like running backs don't come back from that. They don't come back from knee. and some I'm listening to these guys, but I'm really not. I'm not listening to anyone because I just have so much faith in Jesus and in my work ethic as well, you know. So it's a special year for me because I finally get to show people like, hey, whenever I'm healthy, I might be one of the best running backs in the NFL, you know, giving the volume and all that stuff, you know, I might be one of those guys, you know, and I'm finally getting to prove it. I'm finally getting the chance to prove it.

And I'm going to keep getting better. That's the thing. Like, it's just the first year. I tore my Achilles last year. This is my first year back. So I got lots of room to improve. So it's only going to keep getting better. Only a minute left.
