And we often lean on him, as I was talking to him during the break. He's the first person that gets a look at all these high school quarterbacks and they develop. And, you know, sometimes people, you know, are a little broken, Josh Allen, and then he can fix him. And then he gives him to Brian Daibull, and Brian continues that. And then some guys are ready to go. Mack Jones maybe has a lower ceiling, but he's kind of ready to go. Joe Burrow is just, I mean, it's insane that he threw for over five football fields yesterday. And I don't want to hear about the Ravens secondary.

Everybody's banged up. COVID is flying through the league. And Jordan Palmer is now joining us live. Do you remember the first time you saw Burrow, were you immediately taken? Because he's not the biggest. He doesn't have the, they're just, I always said there's a Romo quality. He's just kind of got an it thing, just the way what, we're, his gate, the way walks, the way he plays, were you immediately taken by him?

Well, I was, and it wasn't, we didn't have cleats on or a ball in his hand. We were at a beach house. He came out to be a counselor at one of my camps, my QB Summit camps, and Josh Allen and Sam Darnold and Kyle Allen and a few other guys were sitting around a fire pit, and we were all kind of telling our stories, you know. And I just remember hearing his story and how he thought this is going to be. going into his senior year, how he thought his senior year was going to go. And keep in mind, they were like seven and four his junior year, right? They were, I mean, nobody knew who the quarterback at LSU was, right?

I don't think LSU fans did. And so, senior, but he explained it and talked about what he was going to do with such certainty. I remember saying, I think it was Josh. I remember going, man, I hope this guy can spin it because if he can, he's going to be really good. He's very confident in a healthy way. Yeah. And the next day he threw it and looked really good. And we said, wow, maybe this guy's going to do what he said he's going to do.

You know, it's interesting, Jordan. The NFC, the team that leads every division in the NFC and every playoff team has an offensive coach. Everyone. And the AFC, you know, Belichick and Sean McDermott are hanging around. But that conference is overwhelmingly led by offensive coaches. And this is nothing against Pete Carroll, Mike Tomlin, Mike Zimmer, Vic Fangio, clearly, clearly capable guys.

But you sort of see. see what's happening to the game and the rules. And, you know, kind of take me to what you see when you're teaching young quarterbacks, the advantages a quarterback has today, Jordan, that he did not have 10 years ago in this league. Well, I think for one, the rules change. And I don't want to spend too much time on it. It is what it is.

I mean, it's just talk to the, I'll give you a name, talk to the Ken O'Brien's of the world, right, guys who played 10 years in the 80s in early 90s. I mean, it's just a different game. But aside from your ability to hit the quarterback, I just think we've seen more stuff trickle from high school to college and college to pro. And it used to be the other way. It used to be colleges used to try and copycat things that were working schematically in the NFL. And so players are, they're more ready to play early on in their career. And then the last piece is the exposure that these quarterbacks get at a young age.

If you're a superstar quarterback in high school, you've been interviewed a million times. You have a big social media following. you've played seven on seven, I mean, hundreds and hundreds of seven on seven games, of which you're going to find 40 or 50 completions in each of those games. And so I just think the evolution of the quarterback position, it's just, it's more bottom up now. Players are entering into college, more ready to play. That's why we see guys win Heismans in their first seasons. And then we're seeing so much success at the quarterback position early on. I mean, Joe Burroughs kind of just completed his first season, really. Played seven last.

year and how many he played this year and is off to historic pace. So I just think these players, these quarterbacks are the beneficiaries of that. But at the same time, this position's never been more equal opportunity. We got 511 guys getting drafted high, winning Heismans. Two different Polynesian kids have been taken with top five picks. That wasn't, you know, that wasn't the case years ago with Tua and Marcus Marriota and the success they've had in college in the NFL. So we just, it's so, it's so across the board, guys, short guys. We've had two players from North Dakota State selected in the top three picks in the last five years. What? And so it's more equal opportunity, but at the

same time, it makes it more difficult to have success because there's such a larger pool of really talented quarterbacks that are developing in a young age. So you worked with Josh Allen. And it's interesting. When you get a talent like Josh Allen, you know, all quarterbacks have to be managed, I guess. Joy and I talked about this. You have to manage everybody. Even Brady at some point. You don't want him being out there throwing 45 times, especially at his age. You want to give him a power run game.

He can do play action. But with Josh Allen, there is a part of him, that last drive against New England, it just, they had it defended perfectly three times. It is, will Josh Allen's issue going forward be, what do you let him do

and what box do you want to put him in? How would you coach him going forward? Well, I think it's really clear that Josh has gotten to a point where he's not starting to make plays, right? This isn't a conversation about boy, Josh has really elevated his game. Look at him make plays. He's always made plays. Twyves the fifth or seventh pick in the draft, whatever he was, right? Coming from a school where they didn't win a bunch of championships.

What it is is he's mitigated his risk. It used to be a lot of Josh's mistakes came when he was rolling to the right. And there's a throw he made at Wyoming versus Boise State. I think it's second to last year. He's rolling to his right. he throws on 50 yards, back of the end zone, just play that all the scouts drooled over. And then his rookie year, he'd make plays the one to his right. It's also where he'd throw picks and take unnecessary hits out of bounds.

In his second year, he still did it, but he did it a lot less. Last year, he only did it a couple of times where he rolled to his right, trying to make a play and force something that wasn't there. This year, I don't not believe that he's done it once. So for Josh, it's not about him elevating his game in terms of the playmaking ability. That's been there. I mean, he jumped over Anthony Barr three or four years ago. But now it's the mitigating the risk.

And so you're seeing him put himself and Daibol or whoever's dialing it up, putting him in a position to go ahead and not just make the play, but make the decision on whether or not the play needs to be made. And I think that's been the growth of Josh Allen. And that is we can talk about the lack of run game, but the reality is the run game is one of the answers in the playoffs that traditionally works, but I don't think we've ever seen a quarterback like Josh Allen. And so what I love for them to rush for 150 a week?

Yeah, it would be great. But they have other answers that I just don't think other quarterbacks have right now. And that's going to make them very, very scary here come January. You know, I was joking with a friend yesterday. As I was watching the game, I was on the phone. And I said, ever since Mahomes came in the league, he's so good and gifted, now a lot of quarterbacks are doing this arm angle thing. And I'm like, listen, Patrick, that's his thing.

And now Stafford does it more than I recall. And Carson Wentz does it more. And I'm like, okay, guys, you can honor him. Maybe once a game I'll give you a sidearm throw. But it is funny. I do feel like we never, I like old traditional boring Justin Herbert, Tom Brady. Just give me the old conventional stuff. But it is interesting.

And you probably, I wonder if you've seen this. I do feel like sometimes a lot of young quarterbacks are looking like at a Mahomes. And everybody sees this arm angle. stuff and the analysts, you know, oh, my this is otherworldly. And I think the conventional thing worked for almost my entire life. And sometimes I think almost Mahomes falls in love with it. Can you, can you, do you sense any of what I'm saying here? Do you see any of it?

Yeah, any analyst who's going to make a comment on this, copy and paste what I'm about to say. So here's the deal. To throw a football, we have to have stability in our lower body to create mobility in our midsection or our trunk. The other thing is the further your arm gets away from you or any of your extremities get away from your body, the stronger your core has to be to be able to have control. So it's really hard to maintain control when your arm goes at a non-traditional angle or your leg gets out really wide. The further we get away from our core, the more core stability we need to have there. So when you see Mahomes or Stafford, and those are two perfect examples of them throwing a side arm while they're leaning over that right side, that is not a trick shot.

they have leverage in the ground with both feet. They have stability in their lower half because they've trained their bodies to have that. And they've increased their mobility in their midsection so that they have great control when they make a throw like that. And there's a bunch of them on tape. Burroughs doing it a lot right now. Josh Allen's doing it a lot. A lot of guys do a lot right now. Lamar's had that since college.

Yeah. But it's not a trick shot, right? This is not a fadeaway jumper from a corner from a 14-year-old. Steph Curry is shooting a face. way to way jumper from the corner with three dudes in his face. That's a high percentage shot because of the way that he's developed and trained. And with these quarterbacks, these aren't trick shots. This is a great stability in their lower half that leads to great mobility in their trunk,

which leads to great control as they get sidearm or awkward angles. You know, it's interesting. Baker Mayfield just hasn't been an accurate NFL thrower. He's had four different coaches. And, you know, listen, it's, I remember when he came out of the draft, people talked about accuracy. and then I saw him against Georgia in a bowl game. And I remember thinking, you know, when you speed the game up, he's not that accurate. Like, everybody's accurate in a clean pocket.

And I think a lot of people are saying he's broken. And I'm like, is accuracy, are some guys just, you get them when they're 16 or 17. Some guys are just innately accurate thrower of the football. And I watch, I watch Baker now, it's the fourth year. It's sailing. He's skipping. He's behind guys. And I'm like, maybe he's just not naturally.

he's just not innately a accurate thrower of the football. Some guys, I mean, Brady, even as great as he is, it's this constant repetition to hone, to craft, to hone. I mean, can you fix Baker's accuracy issue? Well, I don't know

specifically enough about Baker, you know, in terms of breaking him down and what it is. I haven't watched him like that. But I would say that anytime somebody does not progress in inaccuracy, somebody who's talented, right? I mean, Baker's do was I think it was a walk-on at two schools, finalist for the Heisman three times and one at once. So this is not some random kid off the street.

This is a very accomplished football player. But when you see somebody progress or when I see somebody that does not progress, my eyes go to a couple of things. One, it's just, you use the word repetitious. It's creating the same movement patterns over and over and over again to the point where you become, you know, it becomes second nature and it's a feel thing. And you're fixing the feeling, not a result. So when I work with young guys, we try and coach a result, right? get it up a little bit, a little to the right, you know, put a little bit more around underneath it. When I work with older guys, it's all about a feeling. I don't care about the result.

They have to chase that feeling. The second thing is we got to judge, to be accurate, you've got to judge speeds and angles. So part of this, there's a vision component of this. It just does not get talked about very often because it's not cool and sexy. But you've got to judge somebody's speed and angle. You're not throwing it to a spot on the sheet of paper that the play designed it to. It's feel, it's speed, its angles. And then the third thing is you've got to be able to control the football.

You've got to be able to control the tempo and the accuracy and the velocity. So there's a lot of things happening there. And so what I do is I don't sit here and do drills with guys and hope they get better. We try and break it apart. What is the issue? Is it a vision issue? Is it a judging speeds and angles issue? Is it a you doing the same thing over and over again issue?

Or is it just your ability to control the football because each of those things have a different path towards addressing it. And with most guys, it's kind of an element of a couple of those things. You build an offseason around it. You have a coach that's on their staff who's on board with that. And then you can see some development really quickly. I've seen it with some high school college and some of the guys we're talking about on this segment. So Jordan just launched the quarterback summer tour, quarterback summit tour.

This is the herd line news. Oh, the Raiders. You know what? I'm watching that game. And I'm like, despite all the chaos, they go into Denver and win. They're so confusing. Well, they hold on to their playoff hopes.

They beat Denver 1713. Lost the turnover battle, giving it away three times. but after an early fumble, Josh Jacobs helped turn things around, 27 carries for 129 yards. They ran the ball. Derek Carr plotted his team for continuing to find ways to win. They get their second straight, close victory. The Broncos are still in the hunt, but they're barely hanging on after losing the third of their last four games. So if you look at the AFC playoff picture right now, obviously tonight's game, the Dolphins and Saints is very important to this whole scenario.

Steelers and the Broncos feel like they don't really have a shot here. Ravens obviously don't have Lamar Jackson healthy. So we're going to find out over the next two weeks, obviously how this is all going to play out. But there's the Raiders, 8 and 7. Look at Joy, this is what is amazing about this league. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12. 13 teams have a shot to make the playoffs.

We have two weeks left. We have two weeks left. I mean, this is why it's the League of Hope. And I'm not taking shots, but we know from a salary cap, baseball has no salary cap. You start the year with about eight teams, can't compete financially. In the NBA, there's a talent gap. There's about nine, 12 teams.

They're not going to win the title. You just know it. I mean, it's not crazy to think Miami wins tonight, eight and seven. I think they win tonight. And they eventually get a host in two weeks, New England at home. Very winnable game. That depends on COVID and health and injuries. And Miami was dreadful.

By mid-October. Yes. Yes. And we spent most of their season talking about DeJohn Watson. Yeah, it's really crazy. I mean, I don't, there are teams, every team here is obviously built differently and has different issues all along the board. But this Raiders win, like, what's happened with the Raiders this year and what they've

been able to do still hanging on is why, if you just hired the right person, build a culture that is not based off of the brand. Right. Like the thing with the Raiders is all the time I always hear this about the Raiders. Anytime I talk to a Raiders fan. We're not tough like we used to be. It's like the same thing with the Chicago Bears.

It's like the same thing with Baker Mayfield and his brand. Like forget the brand. Forget the idea of what it's supposed to be. Yeah. What are the results? What's actually happening on the field? What production are you getting out of the players? Forget all the brand stuff.

The brand is what it is. You know what I was thinking about this? Derek Carr has made himself joy a lot. of money. Okay. So we know there's nine teams that need quarterbacks and there's probably two to three that'll get drafted and developed. And Aaron's probably staying in Green Bay. Okay. Well, let's assume that he is. Okay. Somebody's going to go and look and because if I'm Derek Carr's agent today, I can say the coach is fired. We have an interim special teams coach. Our superstar tied end not available. Our deep threat gone. Chaos all over the organization.

organization in one of the toughest divisions. If the Raiders make the playoffs, Derek Carr's agent is going to be taking a half a dozen calls. As they should. I know everybody's down on Jimmy G. as well. I think Jimmy G. is going to have lots of suitors. You tell me if you put, and I said this, Derek Carr is not, doesn't need Belichick. Just give him stability. Belichick. It doesn't even have a coach. I feel bad for Derek Carr. So do I. Like there's certain players. I'm like, We're a little soft on that. Like, Derek Carr has dealt with a lot, and he clearly still has talent, like, more than enough to win. He's a guy you could get in the right situation and win a Super Bowl with.

I'm his agent tomorrow. I'm just calling teams and saying, can you imagine putting him in Pittsburgh's culture? I love that for Pittsburgh. Derek Carr, a grown-up with Najee, with those receivers. And Derek's a guy that he's all about football. He's very centered. Yeah. And I just think to do what he is doing, and it's not always pretty, but folks, I always say this, you can be a trust fund kid and have a billion dollars.

If you're worth half a million and you lived a childhood of chaos, I'm more impressed. That guy has lived in chaos for two months. Yep, much longer than two months, but this year is really impressive. So the Eagles are still right in the mix for a playoff spot, 34-10 win over the Giants. Giants down bad, down bad. Jalen Hertz looked good again. 17 of 29 passes for 199 yards and two touchdowns. Defense really stepped up, obviously, holding the Giants to 10 points,

two sacks, two interceptions, and one touchdown in the win. Philly has now won six of their last eight games after opening the season, losing five of seven. So they're in the seventh spot in the NFC playoffs. Miles Sanders broke a bone in his hand in the win, so he's getting an MRI and additional tests to see if he can play through it. but I'm really impressed with the Eagles as well. I mean, you and I were both like, this doesn't look good at the beginning of the season.

And they got three draft picks, and I don't think they go quarterback. I think what you do. They have three first round picks in the 2022 drafts. You got to address the O line. They could go get that center from Iowa. They could go and then go put two on the defensive front. But I think Jalen Hertz has earned the right for more starts. I like Jalen Hertz.

I don't understand what the issue is with Jailen Hertz. Well, I don't think he's a great thrower of the football, but my takeaway is, okay, they have found a playmaker, and every time I look up, the Eagles are scoring 30 points. Are they winning in spite of him? And by the way, winning multiple games by blowouts. They're doing what Green Bay is not doing enough for their talent. They're blowing teams out regularly. So the Saints will play their fourth quarterback of the season tonight. Rookie Ian Book takes the field.

I'm actually really interested to see Ian Book tonight. I mean, it's not great news, John. or fourth quarterback if you're the Saints, but I want to see how he plays. I met his dad one time. He came up to me in a restaurant and said, I'm Ian Bookstad. Thanks for saying nice things about my son at dinner. And he was the Notre Dame quarterback. Yeah.

And remember I told you, I said he's got a little bit of the little Baker Mayfield where, you know, you'd like him to be a little bit bigger. But he kind of moves around and makes plays and you trust him with the offense. So he doesn't have a huge arm over the top. So Sean Payton's a great coach for him that he knows. That he needs somebody that can kind of manipulate a defense and create opening. He's not going to throw guys open. He's not a big armed guy.

I mean, I have no expectations tonight, but I'm interested in seeing him. Tason Hill and Trevor Simeon are both on the COVID list. So that's why he's getting his first career start. And he said he's very excited about the opportunity. I'm going to be pretty buzzed. Yeah. I don't know what it's going to feel like. I've played in big games, but I think this is the biggest, obviously.

You know, we're professionals now, and it's Monday night football. And I grew up watching primetime football since I was a little kid. And it's a dream. The main thing for me is I want to go out there, have fun, move on to the next play, and play with speed. You know, don't go out there thinking all the time. That's going to slow down my process. Just got to go out there and play, have fun.

It's football. So Miami is favored by three, according to the Saints, according to Fox Bet tonight. It is in New Orleans. But this is a big win for the Dolphins tonight if they can get it. They'll jump into the seventh spot in the AFC playoff picture, and things are getting really down to the wire when it comes to the bottom half of both of these conferences.

But earlier in the season, felt like this was not a big game, all of a sudden is very important. Yep. Joy with the news. No, no, no, no, turn on the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Herd Live News. Three-word games. All NFL games succinctly wrapped up in three words.

And I'm like, they're missing 13 starters.

I mean, folks, you are just trying to survive. First of all, the NFL's always been about attrition anyway. now you add the Omicron variant, which is everybody in Los Angeles, everybody in New York. It is flying through locker rooms and front offices in the NFL. I'm not looking for the greatest performances ever. Like Kansas City, congratulations. Everybody else, it's mayhem in these front offices. I had multiple executives in the NFL this weekend.

They're like, we are literally, by the hour, we have a different travel plan. Like guys can't get on the bus. It's crazy. So we call it the three-word game. You can describe every word week 16, every game in three words. Here we go. San Francisco, Tennessee on Thursday, tightened it up. How about A.J. Brown 11 catches, 145 yards.

They have found their weapon on the outside in Tennessee, A.J. Brown. Cleveland Green Bay, Baker's dozen interceptions. He was one for nine on passes, 10 yards down the field, and it was just bad judgment. Four interceptions should have had five, and the two-point conversion, which does not count as an official interception, should have been picked as well. They averaged 8.8 yards per carry, and for the life of me, I don't understand why they didn't lean into the run game earlier and more often. Colts, Arizona, Carson's Murray Christmas. Carson Wentz, how about that? Out duels Kyler Murray.

You know what? They were missing Darius Leonard. Four starting offensive linemen, and they handed it to Jonathan Taylor. Wentz had a seven-play, 69-yard drive that ended with a 14-yard TD pass. That's the ball game. Huge win by the Colts. Giants Eagles really feeling themselves. Filling, yeah, you get it.

31 of their 34 points for the Eagles came in the second half. They have won six of their last eight games. They have an absolute offensive identity. I think they need to shore up that offensive line, but they've got some nice pieces at tight end and wide receiver, and they're really productive. Rams Vikings, Rams running wild.

Sony-Michel, 131 yards. Rams are 4 in December. Again, they were missing. Their center Brian Allen, they're all pro-left tackle, Andrew Whitworth, Matt Stafford didn't play well, they pounded the rock and one on the road.

You take it. Buffalo, New England, Mack, and Freeze. He is now struggling. In his last three games, two of them trailing in the second half, he's completing 52.5% of his throws. And by the way, 31.4 passer rating career low for the bills. Again, it's week 16. You're not fooling people. You got to make some plays off script, and that's not what Mack Jones can do.

Tampa Carolina, Brady minus Bunch. Hey, we're missing everybody. Leonard Fernette, Mike Evans, Chris. Godwin, Levanti David, JPP, Antoine Winfield, Jr. But second straight game for the Buccaneers, not allowing a touchdown. Jags, Jets, Wilson's, Wilson Xax's Revenge, Zach Wilson. Well, the number two pick, beat the number one pick. He did have the most rushing yards, 89. This was his big one, by any quarterback in a game in the Jets history. So a little bit of a playmaker.

It's a nice win for him. It's a nice win for Robert Sala. You better win this game. But he made a couple of big throws and used his feet as well. Detroit, Atlanta, Falcons still alive. They need to win their remaining two games and get some help. But the turbulent-driven falcons are still holding on to a playoff possibility. Chargers, Texans, Herbert, Houston, huh?

Well, L.A. was missing 13 players on the COVID list and key players. Austin Echler, Mike Williams, Joey Bosa, Corey Lindsley. And the bottom line, the Texans had a couple of big plays over the top and ran for 189 yards. Also bad pick six here. But this is another franchise. You're missing 13 players and you're missing stars at center, star edge rusher, star back, star wide receiver. young quarterback got overwhelmed. Baltimore, Cincinnati, Burrow teeing off. T. Higgins, monster, 194 yards, two touchdowns. I just love how all of these Bengals offensive weapons.

They're all kids. They're all quickly developing and getting better really quickly. How about Bear Seahawks? Sad Christmas Carol. First time Pete Carroll has lost 10 plus games since his first year as an NFL head coach. Not sure if you knew this, but it was back in 1994 with a Jets. It did not last very long. This is a team that needs to find an offensive identity. I think they need to make a defensive coordinator change. I think they've been in a rebuild for two years.

Russell Wilson just keeps winning a lot of games, so it's fooled people. But their division's getting better. it's an offensive league. They got three offensive coaches in that division. And I don't know what they're going to do with Russell Wilson. It's easy for me to just keep blaming Pete Carroll, but Russell Wilson ran himself out of a field goal yesterday, round and around.

So they've got some work to do. And I think they've got to take some draft picks back, move some of their pieces, not name Russell Wilson, and Dwayne Brown, and get younger and get better. Pittsburgh, Kansas City. Steelers got Ben, Rathlisberger was awful. He's thrown for under 200 yards in back-to-back games, 30th and yards per completion.

And let's be honest here, there's some talent. They have a tremendous young rookie tied-in. They have a couple of tremendously talented wide receivers. Najee Harris, you can't blame the Steelers here. The drafting and developing is at the core of who they are. They've got some excellent young pieces offensively. but Ben, and we've seen this before, some athletes aid gracefully,

Ben took a lot of shots in his first six or seven years running the football. It's what I worry about Josh Allen. You can do it for a few years. You get to about 27 years old, and those things become punitive. Denver, Las Vegas, old, reliable car. Derek Carr, 20 of 30,

80% completion percentage, chaos everywhere, and the Raiders are very, very much still in the playoff picture. Washington football team in Dallas, Sunday night, Daxterpiece. Listen, Dack doesn't make the big mistake. 330 yards, four touchdowns, no interceptions.

All of them came in the first half. You know what I loved about Dack too? He's got self-aware in his second half. He started laughing on the sidelines, and he pulled his hat over his face because he knows he's DAC and he's on television. He doesn't want that. to end up in a Washington football film room, him making fun and laughing at him. But a lot of

these were not difficult throws. I mean, they scheme this thing. There were guys wide open, but it does go to show you Dallas in every unit. There's DeMarcus Lawrence. They, unlike a lot of other teams, Dallas is getting healthy. Their playmakers are healthy. Tyron Smith left tackle is coming back soon. And Miami and New Orleans tonight, they're not fin-ish. Dolphins are currently on a six-game winning streak. Everybody bailed looking to become the first team in NFL history, first team ever, to win seven straight games immediately following a seven-game losing streak. The Saints will be starting their fourth quarterback.

I love Miami tonight. And, you know, they go, Joy, they're one of these classic. They're a little like Philadelphia. You know how we say the Niners or the Colts? We like their quarterback. We don't always trust them, but they run the game. They run the ball. We love their coach.

These guys are Philadelphia. Miami's Philadelphia. Some limitations, but a total identity on what they are. Two, it doesn't make big mistakes. They play the heck out of defense. They know what they do. They do it well. They go back to it.

They play the field position game. I think Miami wins that thing tonight about 27, 20, and it'll be just classic minds. Miami. You look up and Tua will go, you know, 21 of 31, one touchdown, no picks. And you know what? W's or Ws. Miami very much controls their own fate.
