This is an I-Heart podcast.
Guaranteed Human.
Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy,
not quite.
Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends.
Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman
help make you funnier.
This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer,
Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band
with their between songs banter.
Where does your group perform?
We do some retirement homes.
Those people are starving for banter.
Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel
and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games.
Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's
superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year.
Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth.

A win is a win.
A win is a win.
I don't care what I'm saying.
Yep, that's me, Cliver Taylor the 4th.
You might have seen the skits, my basketball and college football journey, or my career in sports media.
Well, now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifers Show.
This is a place for raw, unfiltered conversations with athletes, creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard,
but celebrated.
So let's get to it.

On the Look Back at it podcast.
From 1979, that was a big moment for me.
84's big to me.
I'm Sam J.
And I'm Alex English.
Each episode, we pick a year,
unpack what went down,
and try to make sense of how we survived it.
With our friends, fellow comedians,
and favorite authors.
Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s.
84 was a wild year. I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.

So I finished.
I'd watched winning time all the way through.
I jumped around.
So last night I went back, finished up everything, watched it in order.
I like the five episodes at the beginning better than the end.
I don't love basketball scenes.
I don't like sports scenes in movies because they're just so inauthent.
to me. Like, the Dr. J guy. You feel like the war scenes you watch in movies are very accurate.
Well, when I watched Savick Private Ryan, I did feel like for that first 10, 12 minutes,
I was like, man, this is, I do feel like some scene, like Top Gunn, I haven't seen it,
but Tom Cruise does, he is the pilot in those jets. Like, really? Like, that's really him.
I just read that this morning, so I think. Yeah, but he's not actually flying at Mach 10.
Isn't he? I think he is. Am I wrong on that, Alex? Alex saw the movie.
Yes, I saw it also.
It's awesome.
It's excellent.
And he's flying the planes.
You don't think he is?
He's in a plane.
He's not flying at Mach 10 over a mountain.
Your belief in Tom Cruise is spectacular.
What's that?
It is remarkable.
You believe in Tom Cruise.
Yeah, like, I know everybody...
We got to talk about this.
I know everybody doesn't like him, and I'm not into Scientology.
I have no problem with Tom Cruise, whatever he worships.
And I think he's a great actor and talk.
Top Gun is incredible.
It did amazing this weekend in the box office.
So you loved it.
I loved it.
I would see it again.
And here's the thing.
Nobody will walk out of the theater, almost nobody, and say, I didn't like it.
It won't get a single best picture vote because Hollywood gave it.
Something around the Forrest Gump time.
So Forrest Gump, not as good as this movie.
Forrest Gump, like won the Oscar.
That's when Hollywood...
Wait, wait.
You're saying Forrest Gump is not as good at Top Gun?
It's like the best movie of...
No, no, no, relax.
Forrest Gump is a cinematic masterpiece.
Top Gunn is awesome.
That's like a crazy.
You think Forrest Gump's better than this?
Like there are lines in Top Gun where I'm like,
if I didn't love this movie so much, that is super cringe.
But it's awesome.
So there's difference between an awesome movie and like something that deserves an Oscar.
You don't, will it get a single Oscar vote?
No.
You wouldn't give it.
Maybe, you know what?
Maybe for like sound mixing.
The sound was incredible.
It's a movie that you should see in a theater because you can like hear the planes and stuff.
That's like saying.
she's got a great personality.
No, I mean, this matters.
Bad sound.
Actually, for me, it doesn't matter.
I have to watch all shows and movies at home with the subtitles on even if it's in English.
All right.
Have you seen it yet?
Have you seen Top Gun?
No, I'm going to go see Top Gunn.
I've told you this before.
I've never waited in line for anything in my life.
I refuse to.
I don't care if it's an iPhone.
I don't have a Christmas present.
I did, well, DMV.
Grocery store, like that stuff.
But like the idea of going to the theaters when they're,
packed. I can't do that.
I'll go to Tuesday.
We live in Los Angeles. There are
luxury movie theaters here that you can book
ahead. You can book your seats
and they bring you bottles of wine.
That's not who I am. It's who I am.
That's how I go to the movies.
I also still get popcorn
out of principle, but there's like amazing
movie theaters here. It's what we do here.
I guess you're right. But
you would think Forrest Gump and that movie's
way better than this movie. I don't know.
Boy, those Mission Impossible's.
I think those movies are so undervalued.
I refuse to allow you to compare Forrest Gump to Mission Impossible on this program.
I won't allow it.
Forrest Gump, are you kidding?
Hey, also, the Tom Hanks Elvis movie where he's...
Oh, I can't wait for that movie.
That looks so good.
Now, reportedly, it's Hank's at his best, and that's saying something.
It looks excellent.
They're like, Hank's is unbelievable.
and Tom from Philadelphia.
I mean, come on.
Tom's Oscar speeches are worth an Oscar.
Tom Hanks is one of the greatest actors in the history of acting.
And just an inch below Cruz.
I love Tom Cruise.
I think this is it.
Tom Cruise is different.
He's an American superstar.
And when you're a superstar for 50 years in America or 40,
you're going to step in it.
You're going to be odd.
You can't be normal.
No, you can't be normal.
normal. I don't, but I'm separating art from artists here. I don't know Tom Cruise. I know if Tom
Cruz is doing an action movie, it's going to be awesome, and I'm going to enjoy it. Yeah. So I'm for
Tom Cruise. I am for him. I do not love the Scientology stuff, and I drive by that place,
and I just look the other way. So I'm not into that. Well, because then they get, they shoot you
the laser beams and then go to the sky and attack by aliens. That play, I drive by Scientology. I take
the exit if I can before the building. I can't. I don't want to look at it. People just,
people want to be into stuff, huh?
All right. NBA finals
tip off Thursday. We're very excited
for this. It is a great
finals. As the veteran warriors take
on the youthful Celtics, and I think all the pressure
falls squarely, I do on
Boston. Be sure to catch live
editions of the herd weekdays in noon
Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific.
On Fox Sports Radio, FS1,

Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tap little Kim's boobs at the VMAs?
Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people.
I know what you're thinking.
What the hell does George Bush got to do with a little Kim?
Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast.
I'm Sam J.
And I'm Alex English.
Each episode, we pick a here, unpack what went down,
and try to make sense of how we survived it.
Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill,
waxing all about crack in the 80s.
To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack.
I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so, you know,
But just so y'all know.
I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed correct.
So I'm starting to see that there's a through line.
We also have AIDS on the table right now.
Thank you finishing that sentence.
I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Really?
Yeah.
For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history.

So we had Bill Orm to give you a Lakers update, Sam Amick, some NBA stuff.
I did float what I don't think is crazy.
Bill Orham said it was not crazy, which is in the NBA the way contracts are constructed to get out of a horrible contract,
you have to inherit other bad contracts.
So one of the things that was floated to get out of Westbrook is you go to Indianapolis
and you say, give us buddy healed and Malcolm Brogwell.
Now, then you have two contracts that are not ideal.
I would do that.
I don't think the Pacers want to do that.
But the one I floated out there is LeBron James does not like playing with young players.
LeBron James has won a title with Kyrie Irving.
Kyrie Irving has acknowledged it was his immaturity that broke up the calves.
Kyrie Irving has been humbled.
LeBron James has been humbled.
I don't think it's a terrible idea.
Westbrook goes to Brooklyn because they want out of the Kyrie business.
They're just not saying it publicly.
Kyrie goes to L.A.
And LeBron's like, I've won with him.
He's a finisher.
We've got three stars.
LeBron likes to play with stars.
And if they're healthy, they'll be a handful.
That's not deniable.
On the nights, they're healthy.
Lakers could be as good as any team in the league for those nights.
Cross your fingers on health.
but you're out of the Westbrook contract.
And as Joy said earlier,
Westbrook is toxic.
Kyrie's not toxic.
He's just unavailable.
I don't think it's a terrible idea.
And, I mean, you can sit.
I mean, look at your options.
Keep Westbrook for the year.
Stomach it.
Be awful.
He can't play off ball.
It's bad for everybody.
And LeBron's not happy.
And by the way, then you have another year,
LeBron's 20th of wear and tear in his body.
Like I, I, I, Brooklyn wants out of Kyrie. L.A. wants out.
And you have the stars that played with this person.
And Kevin Durant won't say it publicly, but I think he's had the sign off on all these criticisms by Brooklyn, some public on Kyrie.
He's over it.
So let's bring in Ryan Hollins.
Podcast is the opinionated seven footers with Brendan Haywood.
10 plus years in the NBA with a lot of teams.
Now, before you roll your eyes, mock scoff at my suggestions, Mr. Hollins.
You know the NBA is different than every other league.
You get a bad contract.
You get a bad contract.
Kyrie, when he came out a couple of weeks ago and said, I'm going to own that LeBron thing.
That was for a guy to say that is a big deal.
That's real self-awareness.
And I think LeBron was, I thought LeBron was crushed.
because I think
Kyrie's ability to take that big
shot, I think LeBron loved that.
Is this idea nuts for the Lakers?
You know it's funny, Colin?
I thought originally
Kyrie would have made the move to L.A.
But apparently there was a lot of water in the bridge
that I didn't know about,
but I thought originally that was the move
that made sense was Kyrie to Los Angeles
with LeBron, and it obviously didn't work out.
I think there has to be a level of love
between those two
that's there. You win a championship together. You're brothers, man.
Guys that I played for with the Celtics and the history there, we're brothers to this day.
There's a bond that is not breakable.
I think it would be one of the most amazing stories in sports if those two were to get back together.
I think it's big words from Kyrie, clearly by saying it was his mistake.
And I think in some ways those two may need each other.
You know, they fit. Kyrie's the shot taker, the bronze, you know, the pass or the facilitator.
This is what you said is interesting.
They need each other.
Right, right.
And there's an extent where, how do I say this,
LeBron can be tough to play with sometimes
because he can take the load on his back
and then sometimes he wants someone else that can carry that load.
And Kyrie is that guy.
Well, also, LeBron's only playing 55 a year.
It's going to be a lot of nights.
Kyrie, it is your team.
And I don't think at this point LeBron's got a problem with that.
Yeah.
And when you have two guys that are so,
good, so talented, they're going to butt heads. You got to be okay with the moments where you're
going to butt heads. And I think at the end of the day, Kyrie just wanted to be respected. He
wanted to feel like he held his weight in the championship. And LeBron wanted to like, hey man,
like realize the leadership, the little sacrifices I make behind the scenes that aren't seen.
How about this, Ryan? Rob Polenka met, I'm told at the combine, was Sean Marks, the GM at
Brooklyn.
So, Sean Marks is like, yeah, you know, Sean Marks, this is my takeaway.
Kyrie's a lot better than Westbrook, and he's good off ball.
So I want your first round picks.
And again, you can go back on that.
We've argued this.
The Lakers and the Yankees should not be consumed with draft picks.
You know, baseball has no salary cap.
The Yankees have the Yes network.
They have this revenue stream that's never ending.
And the Lakers, by the way, historically, it's a winter league.
Guys like to play in L.A., Miami.
That's just the way it is.
I don't think it's crazy.
I don't, I think what you pointed,
you said something that really matters in life.
When stars are used to winning,
they need each other.
And here's the reality too.
We can talk about and speculate about what we don't know,
but we can tell you what we know.
Both situations didn't work out.
Westbrook and L.A., with all due respect, it didn't work.
And it's not going to.
Yep.
And Kyrie and Harden and,
whole experiment with the Nets, it didn't work. And I think you can even hear from some of
Kyrie's words is that, man, we need more discipline. We tried it our way. It didn't quite
work out as planned. Obviously, things didn't work. So you got to look at both sides and you
have to at least take a look at it. And I'll tell you one thing from my experience is from
general managers and things behind the scenes. As a player, you don't know how many deals you've
been thrown into. You've been shopped around the whole league. And it's a general manager's job
to go out and shop and explore different options.
So these things are not crazy to say they're being shopped and explored.
It's just how much sense do they actually make?
Think about this, Ryan.
What is the knock right now for KD?
Katie's thinking Ben Simmons is never available.
And Kiree wasn't available.
What is Westbrook always available?
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
You're going to get 70?
I mean, that's the reason I embrace the Laker thing.
I'm like, well, he'll play.
can't play off ball, but he'll play.
So was Kyrie thinking, yeah, I mean, it's,
I know what it is, but in the end,
the bottom line is he'll give you
68, 70 games.
I still don't know if Simmons is going to play.
I mean, come on now.
So I don't know.
I don't think my idea is nutty.
Even Bill Oram, who covers him, like,
when you have desperate people who need each other,
stuff happens.
But I will say this, though,
from a schematic standpoint, strategic behind the scenes,
Westbrook and Ben Simmons would be tough
because those are two.
There's two of the same player right now.
They need the ball and neither can shoot.
Yeah, and need the ball, neither can shoot.
And what's the beautiful is that if you have one of them,
you got shooters all around.
You got KD, you got Joe in the corner,
you got Curry on another corner.
You have shooters around.
So I think if you would make a Westbrook move,
you would then have to make something happen with Ben Simmons also.
And now you've already invested into Ben Simmons.
Are you ready to move off of him?
So that's the only thing that may be in the way of that.
Okay.
How about this?
Joey, at this point, I'm making crap up.
Okay.
Okay, okay, I'll throw this out there.
Okay.
Kyrie Ben Simmons.
Go to L.A.
Westbrook, who you're going to leave.
Because KD. is like...
Oh, you're not about to go there, are you?
Oh, go ahead.
Throw it out, Colin.
Anthony Davis, Westbrook.
Oh.
And we get Ben Simmons-Kyrie.
Now, you can say to yourself, well, I think deep down the Lakers are, I don't know,
Simmons comes to L.A.
He sees himself as a star.
He's a better defender on an old roster that has few great defenders.
I don't know.
Listen, I thought they should have traded AD.
The minute he came in out of shape post-bubble when it was his franchise,
I'm out.
Well, my understanding, too, is Ben Simmons wanted L.A.
He wanted West Coast.
But, I mean, have we ever seen two max-salary stars,
mega-stars traded for each?
We've seen one, but two, we've seen three-way deals.
We've seen four or five.
You did not.
When I said this, you thought about it.
It's not the nuttiest thing ever.
No.
I think, and what's tough, though, if I'm LeBron,
no one can argue a healthy Anthony Davis is the best pairing.
He is the Scotty Pippin to Michael Jordan that LeBron never had.
He's the best fit because he's a finisher.
He's selfless.
He defends.
He's active.
He's young, but he hasn't been available.
It's only not you can give to Anthony Davis.
So you got questions of what do I want to give up for?
Is Ben, how healthy he is he?
He's a clutch guy.
Where does he fit in the equation?
You know, if I'm Anthony Davis, do I want to leave L.A.?
I'll throw this out there.
Ben Simmons and Westbrook don't work.
together, but you're only keeping Westbrook to the trading deadline, then you move him.
So it's KD and it's Simmons, and then Westbrook's gone, and you have space.
The Lakers get Kyrie.
You're going to have to give first-round picks.
I don't know.
I'm throwing it out there.
I'm sorry to waste your time, but this stuff's interesting.
You got to do something.
When you look at situations, you have to, and when you have LeBron James, you've got,
I mean, before we said, what, three more years of high-quality basketball?
out of LeBron James. So what do we got? We're assuming
now. We got two left. You got
to make the most of it. You have to
make the most of LeBron in L.A. And that's why
the Westbrook situation, he's coming back.
You're just wasting tread on the
tires for LeBron. What's the
point of that? KD.
when he stays healthy,
is still elite. I mean, I think
he's a very strong defender. KD.
is still a great player. And mostly
stay healthy. Okay, let's go to the finals.
I think the pressure's on Boston,
because I think all the legacies, all the money and rings are cemented in Golden State.
I think it's all on Boston, and I know they just won two game sevens, but man, they got tight.
I like Golden State for a lot of reasons.
One of them is I could see Boston out playing Golden State in several games and still losing in five or six.
You hit it right on ahead, Colin.
I think that's my deciding factor.
I want to see how you feel about this.
I was talking about this on radio with Doug Doug Gottlieb the other day.
and my thing is we're always intrigued with superstars.
It's LeBron versus Katie, LeBron versus Stepp, LeBron versus Somebody,
who is the biggest super.
To me, this year a playoff has been determined by depth.
Okay, how deep is your team?
Can you play at a pace of the 120s for seven games in a row?
Can you make it through an NBA season,
then a whole other season, and then seven games, seven games,
seven games?
Do you have the depth to do so?
I think the biggest difference with Boston is they have depth,
and even more so the biggest difference with Golden State.
is they have depth. They went out and understood that we need Jordan Poole to be a dog.
You notice? Like Jordan Poole has to be a guy who can go out and score 20. Wiggins has to be a guy
who can get me 17 to 18 points tonight, right? So now you got four or five guys in Golden State
who can go out and get you a bucket, okay? Draymond Green can be a triple double threat.
Now we're talking depth. So Steph Curry's not going to be the same Steph Curry. He can give us
moments where he's Steph. We can see game six Clay Thompson, but our depth is going to be the
biggest factor. When you go depth for depth, now what do we say? Experience. And what
have we seen from Boston, which you just touched on? They have been in so many moments where
they have tried to give the game away. They should have been, it should have been 4-1 against Milwaukee,
correct? Absolutely. And they smoked it away. They almost smoked it away against the heat.
Look, I was getting nervous. I was on that team. They were, first of all, game six,
losing's brutal at home.
The game was over in the first quarter against Miami.
They just, they got tight.
There's no other way to say it.
They were a better team.
They got, the problem with that team is if Marcus Smart isn't scoring,
they're kind of limited offensively.
They go into, when he's hitting and Jalen and Tatum are, they're a great team.
Yes.
But that's about every fourth game, Marcus gives you 24.
And that's just, I think that's been established.
That's what they are.
So I know Marcus is going to be great for two.
The other thing that doesn't get discussed is when Robert Williams is
on the floor, Golden State will not
score near the rim. He gets hurt
a lot. If you told me
now he misses two games in the series, I'm like
Warriors win in five, because now they can score from the
perimeter, and now Robert
Williams will end
any interior scoring for Golden State.
I love what he brings to the table.
And here's the difference
with the heat and with Golden State.
Now, it's not Golden State of old,
but you can score in the hundreds
in the 110s, and
you could beat the heat. You could go into
prevent defense, you can go and chill and be conservative and work at the 24 o'clock.
You can't do that against Golden State.
A 10-point lead will evaporate.
And the question, like you said, that we kind of mentioned, everyone at this level is defending.
Okay, the Heat defended, Boston, defending.
You wouldn't make it here if you didn't defend.
At the end of the day, the heat just couldn't score enough, so you could be conservative.
That was really it.
You cannot be that conservative against Golden State.
And what we talked about is the consistency and the execution of Boston.
Can Boston execute for four games to be NBA champs?
I think that slip-up game they can't afford.
Actually, we talked about it.
I like Dallas to beat Golden State, but at the end of the day, Golden State was too mentally tough.
And they knew if they could break their backs in game two, because Dallas was beating the breaks off of them in game two.
They had them broke.
And then they went out and got game three, and it was a wrap.
But Golden State has that mental edge from experience.
And if I'm not mistaken, Boston doesn't have a single player who's played in the NBA finals.
It's everything, Colin?
Yeah.
You know, watching Jimmy Butler take that series over, and it reminds me of something years ago,
there was a player named Ruben Patterson, and they called him a Kobe stopper.
And, you know, Gary Payton was a Jordan stopper.
And it really comes back to something.
The world's best basketball players will score.
Yes.
Period.
And I think the Warriors have more guys who have elevated offensive games.
And I think the emergency of Jordan Poole.
You know, Andrew Wiggins is a funny guy.
You may have played with a guy like this.
He's a number one talent.
He just doesn't have the mentality.
I'm good with it.
Some guys don't want to lead.
Wiggins, when he's on the floor, they are so athletic.
Yes.
He can defend.
He's twitchy.
Did you ever play with a guy like Wiggins where he's a number one pick talent?
And he just, I mean, man, his personality is.
he's kind of a two. He's kind of a three.
Did you ever play with the guy like that?
Man, I'm a shout out of a former teammate of mine.
I'm going to go all the way back to college.
Cedric Bozeman.
Seth Bozeman, we end up making the championship,
we end up losing.
Cedric Bozeman was on pace to be the next Magic Johnson.
And I think what happened is he got hurt.
Farmer was in play.
Farmer wanted to be the guy.
And when I think about said,
in the sense of not that he's Wiggins,
but Cedric ended up playing off the ball.
He was a secondary point guard for us.
We ran a lot of stuff through him.
UCLA.
At UCLA.
But Ced wasn't the guy in that place where you asked him to be Magic Johnson, where you asked him to take one of those roles.
So I think when some, the biggest thing that you can do is put someone in a position they can be comfortable in.
He could defend anybody on the floor, secondary point guard.
He had a very high value, you know, played a year in the league in Atlanta, you know, made good, good money overseas.
Love that dude to death.
So I think the hats off that we have to give to Bob Myers and Golden State is they said,
Andrew Wiggins, we know we paid you a lot of money.
We don't need you to worry about making up that money or living up to that ex-station.
That money doesn't have to mean 30 points a game.
That money means you being you.
But that dog, Jordan Poole, we want him to go score.
He has the green.
I remember watching Golden State play this year against my Rockets.
And I'm looking and it's like, you got Steph on the floor, you got this kind of floor.
Jordan Poole is, he got the green light.
He's taking the shots that staff or Clay, whoever would be taken.
I'm wondering, how's this going to work when Clay gets back?
Clay got back.
He takes the exact same shot.
So Jordan Poole has the mindset to be aggressive.
There's no question.
And hats off to Steve Curtis, say, you take those shots, Wiggins, you relax, and play off the ball, and you'll be comfortable.
And how often do you see in situations in sports or teams where you're going to play to what someone's strengths are?
Yeah.
So I'm going to take Warrior 6.
What you got?
Warriors and 6?
That's fair.
I'm going to take them in six.
I think, like I said, the Achilles Hill is experience death.
I think they both have versatility.
And if I'm not mistaken, Gary Payton, the second is coming back.
There's another guy that can guard her one or a two.
And Golden State defends, both teams defend, but Golden State defends.
They understand that calling Carter's defense.
And like you said, you can't, they're not what they were offensively,
but you can't take those same lows.
Yeah.
You forget with Golden State.
Not only do they have NBA experience,
on four years of college, Steph three years of college, Clay, three years of college, Jordan Pool 2.
These are older basketball players. They've been, when you look at Golden State's experience,
I forget the numbers, but it was, I looked at the amount of games. It was like 140 to zero.
Like these guys have just been in so many big games. And I do think there's the value of you can
manipulate refs. You can manipulate. Dremont told me a story the other night. He's like, you let so-and-so off the hook.
They were talking about Luca had two missed shots and a bad foul.
And Draymond's like, don't let him off the hook.
Four in a row, guy loses their confidence.
These guys have seen, I mean, these are movie critics that have seen every movie for 40 years.
You can't introduce a new scene to him.
Golden State has been in every conceivable kind of situation.
Boston's kids still.
These are still young dudes.
I think that stuff ends up being huge.
Golden State understands also.
this is going to be their sweetest championship yet.
It's not the first one where they were kind of too young.
It's not the second go around with KD.
This is going to be their Swedish championship yet.
They've built culture.
They've rebuilt.
They've introduced new characters into the party, into the mix.
Their star left them.
And this is one that you look back.
This is like Kobe Bryant.
When Kobe Bryant did it without shableness.
with Gasol and buying them and those boys, that cemented Kobe is Kobe. And I'm not saying
that Clay needs to be cemented in history or Steph Curry's not the greatest shooter of all time,
but this championship is going to mean more. And I don't think they're looking at the rear view
like, yo, this is for you, Katie. That's not what this is. This is we did it our way.
We invited Katie to the party because we're eagoless. And now eagoless, we step together to
Golden State Way and we did it without KD. We did it without help. We did it all.
way. So I feel like this by far would be the sweetest championship ever, and they know it,
and they can fill it, and it burned those guys up the last two years, everybody coming on
his shows and going, Golden State is dead, break them up, they're over with. You know, Clay Thompson,
what's he going to be? Steph, what's he going to be? He doesn't have it. This by far, the sweetest
championship yet, and the one thing you got to credit Draymond for, he gives that team there, why?
What's driving you? Was making you come to work every single day? What's putting that battery in
you're back. And now those guys have motivation that I don't think Boston has. We talked about.
What's their motive? It haven't been there before. This is the furthest they've been. I don't want to
just say they're happy to be there, but they don't understand the moment like Golden State understands it.
Good stuff. Ryan Hollins, the podcast is the opinionated seven footers. He and Brendan Haywood.
We've got to take a break. Good seeing you, my man. It's the herd. Be sure to catch live

Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged.
It's the enhanced games.
Some call it grotesque.
Others say it's unleashing human potential.
Either way, the podcast's superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year.
Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds.
I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth.

Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tapped Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs?
Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people.
I know what you're thinking.
What the hell does George Bush got to?
do a little kill. Well, you can find out
on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English.
Each episode, we pick a here,
unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it.
Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill,
waxing all about crack in the 80s.
To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack.
I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know.
I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode
where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line.
We also have AIDS.
on the table right now.
Thank you finishing that sentence.
I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Really?
Yeah.
For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history.
Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
All right, welcome back.
We got some updating to do.
Joy Taylor with the news.
No, no, no, no.
Turn on the news.
This is the herd line news.
Well, Ime Udoka has led the Celtics to the finals in his first season as head coach.
And he admitted there were multiple teams that had passed him over for a head coaching opportunity.
He listed a few for Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports.
He said, you really want me to tell you?
Detroit, Indiana, Cleveland.
I can go down the list.
That was tough because I believe I was ready.
But I couldn't be more proud to be a part of an organization that's pushing for winning.
and championships. I wouldn't trade that in any day.
Well, that's pretty good. Detroit Indy and Cleveland passed on. You got the Celtics.
Got Jason Tatum, Brown, smart. Williams?
What's meant for you will find you.
Yes, that's a good way to put it.
Sometimes things in life, you think you want them at a certain moment, and it feels like
the end of the world that you didn't get that opportunity.
And it turns out a couple years later, you find out that you got kind of lucky.
You know, it's really interesting about this. This team was 18 and 21 in January.
They were a mess.
So essentially, you know, I talked to my daughter about this all the time.
Like, it shouldn't be easy.
Like there's nothing that work.
If it's easy, then you took a job that was grooved in for you.
Like this was a first three months, they could not figure it out.
Well, that and, you know, so many people want to talk about Brad Stevens and Brad Stevens built this and that and whatever.
I don't want to hear about Brad Stevens.
Okay, there's a reason Brad Stevens is not still there.
And they didn't make the finals with Brad Stevens.
That's no disrespect to Brad Stevens, and he's done an amazing job in the front office,
and he did a nice job with the Celtics, but that's not the standard for the Boston Celtics.
It's nice.
They want to win championships, and EMA got them there in his first year.
Now, is it a better situation than Cleveland or Indiana or Detroit?
Yes.
Yeah.
But so what?
Some people do more with more, and they are able to elevate great.
And that was the question with Brad Stevens, is he had essentially this roster,
had these stars and they couldn't get over the hump.
So I think he deserves
the credit for what's happened. So your point,
they were struggling, they got it together,
and now they're in the finals. And there
were rumors that they were going to trade people
and they, you know, they finished second in the Eastern
Conference after being three games under 500
at the end of December. Pretty amazing. And a lot
of blowout wins. You remember they went on about a
two-month stretch? Well, they were just crushed.
They were doing Phoenix in the
West and Boston and the East were blowing
people out. Good teams out. He started
to hold monthly player meetings where they could
air things out and to help encourage leadership among the team. You can have all the pieces in
talent in the world. If you don't put it together on a personal level, that's what it takes in
those big moments is that chemistry and getting over the hump. So he deserves a credit for that.
So speaking of culture, the Warriors are known for having a strong culture. And Kavanaugh
spoke recently about how important it is to keep the foundation of the team.
And I think that's probably the biggest thing with our culture. We always talk about playing with
a joy. And I think that joy never left. I get a lot of credit to, you know, Steve and
Bob and they brought guys in the locker room that still fit our culture and our person,
our personality.
You know, they never, like, even when we were losing, they didn't change, like,
overhauled everything.
They get stuck to our game plan of the people fitting the scheme and the environment
was still the same.
Even though we were losing, the environment was still fun.
It was still fun to come to work.
Here's what I think is undervalued in all professional sports because it's obviously fun
to have big personalities and you'll have a Baker Mayfield and a Browns and you have the Dallas
Cowboys and you know right now you have the Lakers like drama and Brooklyn Nets all that's all interesting
and it's fun and it's it's really exciting to talk about from our perspective and for fans so lots
of debate but the reason that there's not sustained winning in those situations is because when
you come into work every day and you've got to deal with all this extra stuff on top of a very high
pressure job like winning NBA championships yeah it's very very difficult
to do. You want to be able to come in and do your job. If we had to come in here every day and we had to have a
meeting and talk about like our feelings and the mood we were in or, you know, I didn't get the right
amount of creamer in my coffee. So I tore up my dressing room every other day. Like you can't do work like,
you can't do high level work like that. That's right. You can overcome it if you have one great,
huge talent in the building. But it makes it very difficult on everyone because there's so many moving
pieces when it comes to, when you're talking about a professional sports organization.
There's so many people that work in that building and work to make that successful.
That's why culture is so important.
Yeah.
Because it's one thing that's off the table.
I was talking to Draymond Green about Looney.
And I'm like, is it me or has he gotten way better?
And he said, first of all, he goes, that kid first in, last out, totally buys into our way.
He goes, second of all, this dude had hip surgeries.
He's like, if you're a pro athlete, everything starts at the hip.
Like, people forgot about Looney.
Like, he was battling for an athlete as bad an injury, right in the center of your body.
Draymond had so much respect for him.
Yeah, I just think that the league in general is in a really good spot.
So do I.
The Western Conference Finals and Eastern Conference Finals really showed the value of patience
and really building a sensibility and a personality and culture around teams.
Two years ago, we were petrified of KD and LeBron building super teams in Kauai.
It's Milwaukee, it's Boston, here comes Phoenix, its Golden State was down.
Yep, Joy with the News.
There we go.
Well, that's the news.
And thanks for stopping by.
The Hurd-Lie News.
So we got two more days before the game.
That's okay.
I'm good with it.
I saw it.
Today I did see a lot of NFL stories percolating.
I'm very excited.
OTA stuff.
And I would submit to you again, Baker Mayfield of the Saints.
feels like it works.
Win for both teams.
All right.
Ryan, somewhere back in the control room.
Good to have you back after two weeks for joy.
See you tomorrow.
