Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year.
Starting point is 00:00:52 Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. On the Look Back at it podcast. For 1979, that was a big moment for me. 84 was big to me. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a year, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it.
Starting point is 00:01:17 With our friends, fellow comedians, and favorite authors. Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s. 84 was a wild year. It was a wild year. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win.
Starting point is 00:01:37 I don't care what you're saying. Yep, that's me, Clifford Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, my basketball and college football journey, or my career in sports media. Well, now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifers Show. This is a place for raw, unfilled conversations with athletes, creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard, but celebrated. So let's get to it. Listen to the Clifford show on the IHeard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more behind the scenes, follow at Clifford and at TikTok podcast network on TikTok.
Starting point is 00:02:10 Thanks for listening to The Heard podcast. Be sure to catch us live every weekday from 12 to 3 Eastern, 9 to noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and FS1. Find your local station for the herd at Fox Sports Radio.com or stream us live every day on the iHeart radio app by searching Heard. You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Well, he's been, he was a scout for 18 years in the NFL and not only a scout, but had great influence on building Super Bowl rosters. Packer, Super Bowl roster, Seahawks, Super Bowl roster, a couple of the Patriot Super Bowl rosters. Jim Nagy's now the Senior Bowl executive director.
Starting point is 00:02:50 So we're getting close to the draft a couple weeks out now. And Jim knows I'm a diehard and a wonk for all this stuff. I love it. I would say this. It's not a generally general managers, Jim have told me through the years. There's about 16 to 18, really elite players. They're just different, physically speed, motor, something. I don't feel like that this year.
Starting point is 00:03:14 If I said to you, and can't miss is a cliche. But most drafts, you're getting 15 to 18 guys, the Chase Youngs, the Jamar chases. You know, we look at them and we go, okay, that's going to work really fast. Patrick Sertan, I thought, looked like that. How many guys in this draft, Jim, would you look? You don't have to mention their names and you'd say, boy, I don't see a miss at all. Like, you look at them and you don't see a big ugly flaw on tape. You know, there's probably a handful, Colin.
Starting point is 00:03:44 But again, you're hitting on good players and maybe not great players. There's probably, you know, 10 to 15 sure things where, you know, they're going to be good, solid. You know, probably go to a couple of pro bowl type players, but maybe not that high-end guy that we haven't had in a lot of years. Aidan Hutchison, Michigan. When you talk to your scouts, when you talk to people, what is it about him that separates him? Because most believe, and I think I do, he's the best player in the draft. Just the whole package.
Starting point is 00:04:12 Really, you're checking all the boxes with Aden. He is, you know, people started to kind of pigeonhole him over the summer and going into the season as an overachiever. I always thought he was a better athlete than that. You've got to give the good credit. They used him a lot more dropping in coverage this year, moving around, kind of showing that. athletic ability. But from a character perspective, he's going to be everything you want. You know,
Starting point is 00:04:33 you never want to draft a player because it, you know, it's a popular pick with your fan base. But right now, if he gets past Jacksonville at one, and he could go there. I mean, if he's there for Detroit, I mean, just marrying up with that fan base and that Detroit fan base hometown kid, he's really, to me, he's going to have a Chris Longish type career. And Chris Long was a really good player for a long time. And he helped a couple teams win Super Bowl. You know, it's interesting. SEC is winning the national titles. They're winning the recruiting battles. Okay, so we know that the best college conference.
Starting point is 00:05:05 And years ago, I had a GM say, he goes, if you didn't count quarterback, you got to get your quarterback from anywhere. He goes, you could mostly draft the SEC and get away with filling your roster out. Don't count the quarterback. And I look at Kavon Thebado from Oregon. And I like him, but he's not a big end rusher like a Chase Young. I don't think he's quite as strong as I felt. the bosses were, not as quietly as relentless, maybe as a T.J. Watt. And it does worry me a little.
Starting point is 00:05:36 And I'm a West Coast guy. I say, you know, if he's in the SEC and all those left tackles and right tackles that are NFL guys, do you think conference matters that sometimes can you be fooled by looking at a dominant player in less of a conference? I do. I absolutely do. You just look at the The Pac-12 is down right now. There's no doubt about it. We actually had more players from the Missouri Valley Conference this year in the Senior Bowl than we had the Pact 12, which kind of tells you the state that they're in. We had all the Northern Iowa, North Dakota State guys. So it's down. I think the concern right now with the league where the league's at with Tibido is, is he just a situational pass rush or is he a DPR? Is it the LSU Pro Day a couple days ago now? And that was the concern.
Starting point is 00:06:22 If we line up with this guy, are they just going to run the ball at us 50 times a game and run right at Tibido. So there's a few concerns, motor a little bit, you know, is all the NIL stuff? Is he going to be distracted off the field? Those are legitimate concerns. But to level of comp, every player, you have to factor in level of comp. And right now you put on the Pact 12 stuff. And is he beating any next level players? Is he going up and beating any NFL guys? He put on the Washington State tape, probably the best player he went against was Abraham Lucas from Washington State. Now, he did a lot against the left tackle, but Abe's on the right side. he didn't do anything against Abe Lucas.
Starting point is 00:06:57 So I think those are some of the concerns. I agree with you on the SEC. You hit that conference. You might have to go outside for some offensive linemen, quarterbacks, but you can stay down there and get all your big guys on the defensive line and your front seven guys in your corners. So Malik Willis is interesting.
Starting point is 00:07:14 I'm not a big believer that the combine changes anything. I think the Senior Bowl does more than the Combine does. I think that's a little bit of a beauty contest. But I did think Malik Willis, when I watched him, I was like, man, he's thicker there than he looked at YouTube. His arm is a push it down the field arm. And I got to be honest, Malik Willis kind of, when I got to see him in shorts, I was like, yeah, that's an NFL, that's an NFL body.
Starting point is 00:07:40 What do you make of him? He plays at a lower level of football. You know, he doesn't play, it's not quite yet NFL offense stuff. But I don't know. I watched a lot of guys run around in this league for the first couple of years. Josh Allen, for two years ran around and he said, figured out the passing game. What do you make him a leak willis? Yeah, I don't have a unique take here in the sense that I think he is the highest ceiling quarterback in this draft, Colin. I'll just
Starting point is 00:08:06 share with you a little story. I went up and watched him play at UAB in the fall, wanted to see him play live like we do with all the all the quarterbacks and watch this guy against UAB. And the thing that stood out was how strong, how physically strong this guy. As you reference how thick he is, I mean, they couldn't get him on the ground. That was usually you walk away from. from a quarterback exposure and you think about arm or presence or, you know, something on the sidelines you see that sticks out. I haven't left a college game doing a quarterback, leaving the stadium that day, thinking how physically strong a guy was since Ben Rathesberger, back in Miami, Ohio, whatever that wasn't dating myself, 2002, 2003.
Starting point is 00:08:43 Wow. But that's, I mean, totally different body types, but they just couldn't get him on the ground. So you talk about the runaround factor until you figure it out. He certainly has that. I don't know how many teams want to get Malik out there this year. but that run dynamic and that strength and that physicality, that's certainly going to help him transition until he fully gets up to speed to the speed of the game.
Starting point is 00:09:03 18 years as a scout, four Super Bowl teams he helped Bill, Jim Nagy joining his senior bowl exec director. Give me a player, he'll maybe a top 15 player, but you think he's actually undervalued, that he may be worthy of being number one, but he won't get pick number one. Oh, that's a good one. That's a good one. Top 15 that could go number one. The thing is there's a lot of guys that could go number one. I'd say maybe sauce Gardner, the corner from Cincinnati. Everyone's talking about him as a top 10 guy or maybe top five. I don't think anyone's talking about him is the number one guy. But I'll just relate a couple stories from the combine this year up there. I mean, there was a couple of teams that said we think sauce Gardner is the best player in this year's draft. And he's not close to the finished product. I understand there's concerns about. the level of comp and who's he gone against.
Starting point is 00:09:57 Similar, like I said, about Kvon Tibido and what tackles is he beat not in the Pact 12. But you look at this guy, a six two corner, very springy athlete. Teams just threw away from him. They ignored him. But he's got swagger. You love how he's wired. He kind of carries himself like that corner.
Starting point is 00:10:12 Reminds me a little bit of J.C. Horn that way last year from last year's draft. Yeah. Who was the Panthers top 10 pick? But yeah, it could be Soss Gardner. I think you could make a case he is the best, best player, highest ceiling player in this draft. Drake London. He's not a burner. I watched every college snap. He's not going to run past people. Are you concerned that he just doesn't have top end speed? A little bit, and top end speed is a little overrated. I just go back. You look at guys like Anquam Bolden. I was his group leader at the combine the year Bolden came out. And I told all the guys, don't check with me on your 40 time until we're done with the whole workout. And I'll never forget Anquan walking up. And I had to tell him he ran 4-7-6. So speed,
Starting point is 00:10:53 be overrated to look at Keenan Allen. There's a bunch of guys that have been good players. But what he does have, which all these guys have that work out, is tempo. He's got good tempo short to intermediate. He's never going to be a guy that stretches the field. But he's got some bounce in his step. You know, he's got that basketball skill set, kind of like Mike Williams did coming out of Clemson years ago with the chargers. You know, and Alshan, Jeffrey, like, it's a little bit of roll of the dice because they don't get open. They don't really get open. You want guys that can create space. So these bigger body guys. that muscle on the ball. To me, it is a little, it's not, it's not a slam dunk, but I like his game.
Starting point is 00:11:29 I like Drake Lonen's game. How about Garrett Wilson, OLAV for Ohio State? Did you consider those guys like elite NFL prospects? Yeah, I like both those guys. I like Garrett a little, a little bit higher, a little bit more of a dynamic playmaker, in my opinion in terms of change of direction, ability to get open, create room for himself before and after the catch, kind of got that big play dynamic. And, you know, the fun part is watching these guys back to back. You know, you're watching them in the same game and then you're throwing on the cutoff or playing the same competition. And then even at the pro day, you know, even at the pro day watching those guys go rep after rep, I think Garrett Wilson separated himself from Chris a little bit that day as well.
Starting point is 00:12:08 But both are good players. Chris is super smooth. Doesn't always look like he's playing four three, but he is. You know, his receivers coach there at Ohio State told me he's like, he's going to run faster than you think. And I'm like, I don't know. And then obviously I was wrong. I shot him my stopwatch from the combine. I'm like, yeah, man, you were right. Yeah. Jim Nagy, Senior Bowl executive director drafts a few weeks away. Good stuff. I love it. Jim, it's great seeing you again. Congrats. Senior Bulls humming. And thanks for coming on the show. Thanks, Colin. Appreciate it. You bet. Yeah, 18-year scouting players. That's a long time to be in a business. And he was part of building the Packers and the Seahawks and the Patriots a couple times.
Starting point is 00:12:46 Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd Weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific. Joy Taylor with The News. No. No. No. No. Turn on the news. This is the Herdline News. Well, the Giants are sticking with Daniel Jones.
Starting point is 00:13:03 You're going to run it back again. Oh, boy. And Jones says he is aware of his issues and he did not make any excuses for his poor play. Is that what he says? All right. For me, you know, like I said, my focus is on preparing myself. And I take full responsibility for how I've played.
Starting point is 00:13:20 And we haven't won enough games. We haven't scored enough points. We haven't done things well enough. So I take responsibility for that. As a quarterback, you play a big role in those things. So that's what I'm focused on. I'm working on improving and making sure that myself, as well as the offense, as well as the team,
Starting point is 00:13:41 is ready to go and we're improving daily. Now we have some rules on this show. One of those rules is don't compare anybody to Tom Brady. Yep, that's a rule. Another rule is we were going to decide at Thanksgiving. Yeah, we, I think, Daniel Jones is the guy or not the guy. Yeah, and I was, I was open-minded. I was willing to pivot pro-Daniel Jones.
Starting point is 00:14:03 I said, get me to Thanksgiving. I feel the same way with Davis Mills in Houston. Get me to Thanksgiving this year. Give me 11 more starts. and 10 more starts. I think probably Tua. I know Tua is not it, but he's going to do better this year. Yeah, so I, two is not, I've already moved off to it, but I think he's,
Starting point is 00:14:25 two is better than Daniel Jones. Oh, God, yes. So Daniel Jones, I made my decision up. That should be a new rule. Thanksgiving, your second year in the league. That's a new rule. Is that we're going to do? Yeah, so if you play as a rookie, it's Thanksgiving of your second year.
Starting point is 00:14:40 So I'm giving, now that, that is. If you play as a rookie. If you play as a rookie. So that's 25 starts. Well, he has a 12 and 25 record as a starter. 49 turnovers, 29 interceptions and 20 lost fumbles in 38 games. He was 4 and 7 last year. 64% completion percentage, 10 touchdown, 7 interceptions.
Starting point is 00:15:00 You know what? I think that's what Kenny Pickett's going to look like in the NFL. Fumble issue, pretty athletic, decent arm not great. Yeah, he could run too. He had 298 rushing yards. So can Kenny picket? Yeah. He's Kenny Pickett.
Starting point is 00:15:15 Good straight line speed, big enough. A lot of college starts. Through the ball lot in college. Lower ceiling. Turnover issue. I just, I feel like the Giants, they're so curious to me. It's almost like Dan Campbell in Detroit. It's like you got something figured out that the rest of the league,
Starting point is 00:15:37 like the rest of the league is wrong. Right? Like the Rams are wrong for moving. off from Jared Gough and Matthew Stafford, but they just won a Super Bowl. The Bucks are wrong for moving off of James Winston for Tom Brady. They won a Super Bowl the year before. Lions are just going to do it win Super Bowls with Jared Gough.
Starting point is 00:15:55 And the Giants are going to be competitive in this division. No, it says I don't even understand. I think we should have a new rule, is that you get, it used to be the feeling was you got three seasons of stars. Yeah, you're not getting that anymore. No. A, we're too impatient. B, there's too much money.
Starting point is 00:16:09 And C, all these. There's too much talent. And there's these kids. And mobility. These kids are coming into this sport with like 10,000 more throws. Thanksgiving second year, or third, if you said, Thanksgiving of your second year starting. That's what you get. And Daniel Jones, we saw it and we both bailed.
Starting point is 00:16:29 Yeah, I just don't think that there's enough there. And you should be able to elevate. If you are truly talented, you should be able to elevate the team in some capacity. Not just protect the assets you have. Right. Take them somewhere. No one thinks that this roster is great, but you can't, it cannot be the, it can't be the situation that it is in New York.
Starting point is 00:16:47 And now they brought in Brian Daibel. Yeah. But I don't know. I just, I don't get it. They have the fifth and seventh pick in the first round of the draft. They have a bunch of other picks as well. I'm guessing they're just saying we're going to run it with him. And if it's a failure this year, then we'll move on next year.
Starting point is 00:17:01 But I just don't know what else there is to see. So in his original complaints, former Dolphins coach Brian Flores alleged that he had been offered $100,000 per loss in 2019. by owner Stephen Ross, which is also obviously a huge accusation. Flores has amended the lawsuit filed yesterday, including a claim for retaliation under the Florida private whistleblower statute. So the claim says Mr. Flores memorialized Mr. Ross's desire to have Miami lose games in a December 4th, 2019 memorandum that was provided to Dolphins' GM, CEO,
Starting point is 00:17:36 and senior VP of Football and Business Administration. In this letter, Mr. Flores detailed this talk. toxicity that existed within the organization and explained the unreasonable position, he was being placed in by the team ownership and upper management. Now, he is saying he was terminated because he refused to intentionally lose games, which is in violation of the Sports Bribery Act amongst other laws. And the complaint also alleges that the dolphins retaliated against Flores by failing to make severance payments. Now, also yesterday, Steve Wilkes and former NFL assistant Ray Horton of all.
Starting point is 00:18:11 joined the suit with claims against the Cardinals and the Titans. To me, obviously, the diversity issue with the head coaching position is very obvious. It's obvious throughout all of the coaching ranks throughout the NFL. It's not something that anyone can argue the numbers speak for themselves. The issue with Stephen Ross and the allegations that he was going to pay Brian Flores to lose games is a massive problem for the NFL as well. Way worse than Calvin Ridley, receive it for Atlanta, bet in $1,200 in a game.
Starting point is 00:18:43 A thousand times worse than that. It's nothing. He has no influence. He's a receiver. Right, but this is an owner. Oh, it's, it's, you lose your ownership. Without question. I think it's as damning,
Starting point is 00:18:56 I mean, differently. Like Donald Sterling, like get him out of the league, right? Like obviously, this is the entire fabric, not just of the clippers. No, it's the whole league. It's the foundation of the league. Competition. And not just the NFL, because obviously gambling is a part of all of these leagues, of everything, of even college sports.
Starting point is 00:19:16 So to lose the fundamental confidence in ownership at that level. And people will say, well, people tank all the time. The difference between paying a coach to lose and tanking is very simple. We all know you're tanking. Right. So we can make our bets or not. on bets based off of the knowledge and obvious actions that you are tanking. If you are presenting as if you're trying to win whilst paying a coach to throw a game,
Starting point is 00:19:48 that has endless implications on not just the team, not just the league, not just sports in general, but also on the players in their futures. Like it could literally be dangerous. So it's just such a massive deal what's going on with this lawsuit in both ways. but the NFL has got to get to the bottom of that and get his answers. So Bill Belichick is a very unique coach, legendary coach, probably the best coach of all time. And Mark Wahlberg, a famous Bostonian, recently talked about wanting to portray Bill Belichick in a movie. Yeah, you know, it all started with somebody who would you, you know, who would you see yourself playing, Tom Brady or Bill Belichick.
Starting point is 00:20:32 I think I look a little bit more like Bill Belichick. be real, which is fine. And I love Bill. And I also know Bill. So to be able to hear Bill, you know, beyond the podium where he says next to nothing and really hear him, you know, I just kind of threw it out there. But yeah, I mean, if it's a possibility, I think he would trust me to do him justice. No, there's no confirmation that this is in the works.
Starting point is 00:20:54 But it would be, I mean, this is a movie I would watch. We're watching winning time right now on HBO. I can't even believe the Kareem. So good. Jerry Buss, Kareem and Magic, Norm Nixon. Now,
Starting point is 00:21:11 they don't look at that. You can't do that. Well, Belichick is 69. Wahlberg is 50. Yeah, you can't. You can't.
Starting point is 00:21:16 And also, Walberg was an underwear model, so he's in great shape. He would put, you know, put a couple extra. I guarantee you
Starting point is 00:21:23 there's an actor. Oh, good hell. What is that? No, that's not it. I wasn't prepared for that. No, listen,
Starting point is 00:21:31 look, Hollywood makeup is next level. I mean, we look like we wake up like this. Yeah. So they could make it happen. I do think he would do a good job if they were to do a movie about Bill. And we wouldn't get it anytime soon. So he'd be closer to his age when this actually happened.
Starting point is 00:21:48 Let's keep this story. We should do that. A new, we're going to go pursue this. Give me four or five because winning time is influencing this. Who would play Brady? Oh, you could find like a Ryan Goslingish. There's a lot of Brady's. There's a lot of good looking...
Starting point is 00:22:04 Who would play you if they did a... A hard movie. I know who it is. Is that guy from Italy we posted the other day? No, there's a guy out there. His name is Will something. He has a real popular podcast. Will.
Starting point is 00:22:17 He does a podcast that's really popular with a bum... Who? Will Arnett. Now, he's better looking than me, but Will Arnett is pointy. I'm pointy. Interesting. Will Arnett would play me.
Starting point is 00:22:34 He's a better looking version. I am very British and pointy. And Will is, when I wrote a... I think he could get there. A couple years ago, I was, 10 years ago, there was a sitcom I was part of. We tried to get Will Arnett to play me. And CB West Moonbess said, no, I'm not, no, I don't like the show. But that we tried to get him.
Starting point is 00:22:52 And he was the big shot. I think that's pretty good, actually. Not terrible for me. Who would play you? I don't know. I haven't given that a lot of thought. Well, this weekend, I'd spend some time on it. Joy with the news.
Starting point is 00:23:05 Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Herd Lye News. We all have different ideas about success, achieve it at different times. Retiring, changing jobs. Can't go and do it alone. Go to Stiefel, St.I-FEL, St. Louis-Based, 130 years, giving people financial advice. Stiefel, financial advisors.
Starting point is 00:23:24 Check them out. Steefell, Nicholas and Company Incorporated. Member SIPC and New York Stock Exchange. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific. on Fox Sports Radio, FS1, and the IHeart Radio app. Hey, it's Ben, host of The Fifth Hour with Ben Maller, along with my trusty sidekick, David Gascon,
Starting point is 00:23:43 would mean a lot to have you join us on our weekly auditory journey. You're asking what in God's name is the fifth hour? I'll tell you, it's a spinoff of the Ben Mather show, a cult hit overnights on FSR. Why should you listen? Picture, if you will, a world where we chat with captains of industry, in media, sports and more every week, explore some amazing facts about human nature and more.
Starting point is 00:24:04 Listen to the fifth hour with Ben Mather on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. John Middlecalfs, a former NFL scout and a golf addict. He's joining me live. I'm going to get to that Debo-Samuel stuff in a second, but I want a tiger update. So we were talking about this earlier today, John. Tiger's an old 46, life-threatening car wreck,
Starting point is 00:24:27 back fusion, spinal fusion, to ACL tears, a global travel, life drama. I don't think he can put together back to back to back to back great rounds at this point. So what are you seeing today from him? Yeah, I mean, Colin, he might not even be able to go back to back. I think back to back is a question mark. I thought yesterday was an inspirational day for mankind. I mean, you know, it's a cliche to say, do what you love, follow your dreams.
Starting point is 00:24:58 he said yesterday after he got out of the hospital bed where he laid for three months after the car accident in Southern California that they worked out and rehabbed and trained every day. He has not had a day off training slash rehabbing since getting out of the hospital bed. And I think him like Brady are so addicted to competing and just the love of their sport. Now, Tigers had to overcome many self-inflicted a lot more, you know, some of these injuries. Now, I heard you talking earlier golf, unlike football, I mean, it's not a normal movement, right? So his back fusion, I mean, he has reconstruction knees like he's a running back. But his desire and drive to compete is really, to me, admirable. Now, at 46 years old, that's just kind of old anyway,
Starting point is 00:25:55 on the PGA tour, but when you factor in his injuries, will he be able to maintain this? I, you know, I don't know. I'm not feeling very bullish about it, Colin. All right. What did you just, he just teed off on a par three. How is he doing? He's off the green.
Starting point is 00:26:10 It's, uh, the wind is pumping. Uh, I've never been, uh, maybe, maybe you'll take me one day, been to Augusta, but they say it's like concrete and, uh, it's going to be, as they say in the golf world carnage today on the on the on uh you know he just started right he's only on hole four so to me you know he probably shoots 70-70 makes the cut as crazy as it sounds like it's not inconceivable the shoots 80 today by the way dustin johnson's doing okay isn't he that was my guy that who do you think wins i see why you like dust and johnson he's built like an NFL quarterback or NFL tied in he he is just a thoroughbred uh i think he'll be in the mix i i think cams
Starting point is 00:26:53 Smith, the Australian. They're used to playing in that crazy weather over there, so they're used to it. I would say those two guys. And I think today in the afternoon, anyone who survives this, you know, if the tournament is playing U.S. open level conditions with the wind, with the, you know, how firm it is, a lot of guys can stay alive. You know, PAR is a good score when it's really difficult. Debo Samuel, you're in the Bay Area, former NFL scout. I said earlier, So George Kittle, like Debo, is sometimes unavailable because he's a really bruising physical play. That's his style. And Shanahan loves players like that.
Starting point is 00:27:32 I said, if you give Debo a three or a four-year deal, my two best offensive players often misstarts. The Rams best players don't. The Niners increasingly, Jimmy G., Trent Williams, George Kittle. Do you just automatically pay Debo Samuel what he wants? or would you be concerned at all about his health? I think the major problem is Colin. You won't find a human in the NFL, fan of the NFL, who doesn't think Debo Samuel is remarkable.
Starting point is 00:28:06 And he was last year. The problem is years previously, like you said, he's been unavailable, he's been injured, he didn't dominate. These guys that are getting paid, Dix has been doing this now for four or five years. Right. At a really, really high level. You know, Tyree Kill and DeVille, and Devante Adams have a combined 11 Pro Bowls.
Starting point is 00:28:26 And those aren't the Pro Bowls where like Mac Jones get in because seven guys drop out. Those are because they're the first guy chosen for the Pro Bowl. Debo Samuel has had an incredible season, really an incredible 10, 11 game stretch. Yes. But when you want to get 70 plus million dollars and you're comparing yourself to these individuals, they've been doing it the entire time. Like even Nick Bosa, who is probably going to get a big extension. The moment he stepped in the league, he was immediately.
Starting point is 00:28:53 a top five pass rusher. And then by year three, he's one of the best players in the league. They paid Trent Williams last year a lot of money. You know, when they were battle, he had this, you know, claws in his contract when he was traded. They couldn't franchise them. So they had to let him hit free agency. They ended up basically maxing him out as much money as, you know, they possibly could pay him. But he has been to eight pro bowls, all these all pros. This guy, like the other two guys who are fighting to get paid, D.K. Metcalfe and A.J. Brown, they are true outside wide receivers. Well, we all talk about it all the time, right?
Starting point is 00:29:25 The way the game is officiated, the physicality has been somewhat taken out. So if you're A.J. Brown or D.K. Metcalf, you're not going to get injured as often as D.bo Samuel, when he's running through the tackles, now maybe eventually they want to phase out of that with Trey Lance. But the hard part is like, Debo's really good at that.
Starting point is 00:29:43 You could argue if Debo Samuel just said, I'm going to become a full-time running back. I mean, he'd be a top five running back in the league. But we know running backs, one, you never want to pay them. And two, they get injured fast. So he is a complicated case. He was really good last year. He's a team leader, team captain, but it's based on one season.
Starting point is 00:30:01 And historically in the NFL, teams are, and the Niners, you know, somewhat parallel. I'm not saying like as a franchise, but the way they do business, like the Patriots. We saw it with Buckner a couple years ago. He wanted a ton of money. Boom, they traded them for a first round pick. Now, this is on Kyle's side of the ball. He's his guy, so I don't think that's necessarily going to happen. But I think this is going to probably get even more contentious before they hug and they exchange
Starting point is 00:30:27 bank accounts and give them a lot of money. Finally, Jimmy G. I would move off him, clear up cap space. They gave up nothing for him. He got them to the Super Bowl. I want to see Trey Lance. I'd give him every snap this point forward. Your guess on what they do with Jimmy GQ? Yeah, I would have moved off of them before free agency started so I could have signed
Starting point is 00:30:48 Chandler Jones, but they chose not to do that. At this point, because I do think there are internal questions about Trey Lance, not the person, but is he ready to be a starter for a playoff team? And obviously, they're going to try to be a playoff team next year. That's going to be 100% and really compete for the division. I think the OTAs and Kyle, because Jimmy's not even able to throw, and there's no trade, I would guess that's going to become available during the draft, that Jimmy can be on the team during OTAs, Trey gets to be the full-time starter, take all the
Starting point is 00:31:18 reps with the big guys. And then Kyle can reassess going into kind of the summer break. Do I feel comfortable, just going all in with this guy? Then when training camp starts, he's fully healthy. They can cut him for zero. But Kyle, Kyle is not worried about three years from now. He's not worried about anything but week one. If he is not comfortable with Trey Lance's development, and part of that's on
Starting point is 00:31:39 him, I mean, he's got to coach him up. It would not shock me. Like I'd say there's a 50-50 chance if it gets a little rocky, you know, in this kind of spring team activity, even though it's in shorts and T-shirts with Kyle not being comfortable, that Jimmy G arrives in Santa Clara in late July at maybe a quarterback competition. Maybe they just name them the starter. But I do think that's on the table as long as he is around, Colin. John Middlecough, also at the volume podcast network, three and out podcast is great.
Starting point is 00:32:07 Good seeing you, buddy. Have a great weekend. Joy, how we doing with Tiger Woods here on that par three? Ryan, we have any? Oh, boy, he bogeied the part. three. Oh, and he just... Plus one, Typer 26.
Starting point is 00:32:22 And he just drove one into the patrons. Oh, boy. All right. Well, the wheels are coming off a little bit for Tiger. It's not looking great for him. I mean, listen, it's a great, amazing story, and I love all of it. Sometimes we get a little crazy with the expectations. He just almost died in a car wreck.
Starting point is 00:32:40 And, by the way, was in a hospital for three months. I was in a hospital for 30 hours. Like, the fact that he's out there is... insane. I was in a hospital for 30 hours. Didn't feel right for four months. If I do something to end up in a hospital for three months, you do realize I will do the show from the bed.
Starting point is 00:33:00 Oh, I will. I will call bosses and I'll say, just crank it up. Just give me a little rouge, little pancake makeup. I'm not. I didn't know he was in a hospital for three months. Yeah, the rehab coming back from something like that, it's got to be excruciating as well. Like the initial injury is awful for anything, but the rehab is what exhausts you.
Starting point is 00:33:23 Because it's painful, and if you don't do it, you'll never be the same. Yeah, you get to a point, when professional athletes retire, they usually can still play. A lot of them are just tired of the trout. You know, they have kids and they're like, I'm just tired of being on planes. Like, I've talked to pro athletes. They're like, I can still play. Planes, but also just preparing your body. Like, you have to get there earlier.
Starting point is 00:33:47 to get warmed up because it takes you longer to get ready to do the things that when you were in your early 20s, you just ran out in the field and, you know, had gummy worms for lunch and crushed. Can't do that anymore. Yeah, Tony Gonzalez told me the Hall of Fame tied in. He said the minute he retired, he's like, oh, I never have to lift weights the rest of my life. And I was just like, really? He's like, you have no idea how tedious that gets. Lifting weights every day.
Starting point is 00:34:12 You love lifting weights. Yeah, but that's because, you know, I got to stay, you know, this thing. falls apart in about 15 minutes. I'm like a wheelbarrow. If it's not used regularly and oil. 30 pounds to play you. No, I go sideways fast. You've got to keep this puppy.
Starting point is 00:34:26 It's amazing. I have a bad weekend of Fritos and salsa. And all comes apart. All right. We'll see you Monday. Speak for yourself. Joy, I, Ryan, back Monday. In L.A., it's the herd.
Starting point is 00:34:38 Another podcast from some SNL late night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.

It's the enhanced games.
Starting point is 00:35:15 Some call it grotesque. others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:35:38 On the Look Back at it podcast. From 1979, that was a big moment for me. 84 was big to me. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a year, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. With our friends, fellow comedians, and favorite authors. Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s.
Starting point is 00:35:56 84 was a wild year. It was a wild year. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care what you're saying. Yep, that's me.
