Rob's hot take on the three biggest stories in Major League Baseball. Number one. Don't look now, but Memorial Day is just around the corner. Yes. And the San Diego Padres are alive and well. Hello. Is this on? Going into Wednesday's action, the Padres were nine and one in their last 10 games.

They're the first team to get 30 wins on the season. in Major League Baseball. And yes, they have a slim lead over the Los Angeles Dodgers who are on fire. That's because the Padres are still on fire. They haven't even had their best player in Fernando Tatis Jr. All season long, but since he came back from injury, his first four games back, he was 11 for 14 with four home runs and 12 RBI. I mean, this guy is tremendous.

The Padres aren't going anywhere. This is going to be an amazing NL West race. I picked the Padres, and so far, I'm feeling good about it. Number two. Angels Pitching Coach Mickey Callaway is now former Angels pitching coach Mickey Calloway. On Wednesday, he was placed on the ineligible list through the end of the 2020. 22 baseball season following Major League Baseball's investigation into his alleged sexual misconduct, details of which were originally written by the athletic and the angels followed up the statement

from Major League Baseball saying they are firing Callaway as pitching coach. It's a sad story, but this is where we are. Details of the misconduct include five women, all of whom worked in sports, media spoke to the athletic under the condition of confidentiality and they accused Callaway of inappropriate behavior that included sending shirtless pictures, requesting nude pictures, and things of that nature. The behavior spanned five years and his employment with three organizations, including a stint with the Cleveland Indians as a pitching coach and the New York Medians.

as the manager. He can request to be reinstated, but we'll have to be after the 2022 season. Number three. Bad news for the Atlanta Braves. Outfielder Marcel OZuna will be out at least six weeks with fractured fingers. And yes, he fractured his middle and ring fingers Tuesday night.

Ozuna, 30 years old, injured himself while he. He was sliding in the third base in the game against the Boston Red Sox. The Braves were hoping that they weren't fractured and were only dealing with dislocation. But it was not to be the case. Further tests revealed that indeed he had broken his fingers. Ozuna was hitting 213 with a 645 OPS when he went down. This is a big blow to the team. He's a big bat for that organization.

Here comes the big interview. Listen and learn. Oh, it's so good. All right, now let's welcome to the podcast. One of my favorite people, Jay Crawford. We worked together at the Four Letter Network for many years, had a lot of fun on television. He's currently an anchor at WKYC,

the NBC station in Cleveland, Ohio. And I don't think anybody's a bigger baseball fan than me than Jay other than myself. But Jay, welcome to Inside the Parker, my man. Rob, great to talk to you. I love the name of the show, by the way. That's awesome.

Thank you, buddy. You know I love baseball. I know you do too. Let's catch me up on the Cleveland Indians. We know they're going to have a name change next year. But can Cleveland win the Central Division? And Jay, you know the White Sox are a really good team, but Cleveland's only a game and a half behind

the White Sox going into Wednesday. Yeah, I'm really surprised that the Indians are that close in the Central. I still don't think they can win the Central. I just think that Chicago has too much firepower. And, you know, the longer we go into this season, the left, it seems like it's smoking mirrors. But, you know, there's six games over 500 with a lineup that on opening day, you had just had to wonder where in the world are their runs going to come from? But, you know, they've been getting it done.

It seems like most of their runs come on the home run. Their pitching has been phenomenal, and their bullpen has been absolutely lights out. So I think that's the formula. I just don't see them being able to stay with the White Sox for 162 games, though. Jay, Francisco Lindor was a fan favorite in Cleveland. He winds up being traded to the Mets, signs a mega over $300 million deal. deal with the Metropolitan's. But he's struggling.

I mean, let's just call it what it is. He's struggled so far in the National League and with the Mets. Did the tribe dodge a bullet by not signing Lindor? They absolutely dodged a bullet. And I'm not just being prisoner of the moment looking at his batting average, which is still below his weight. There's no way in my mind that a player can live up to a contract that big.

If you look historically at the players that have had those deals and the number of players that have taken their respective teams to the World Series and won the World Series, there are a lot more guys that have earned those kind of deal that haven't won, put it that way. And, you know, it's the pressure of the New York media and the New York fans, band base. I just don't see how he ever

lives up to that deal. And if Cleveland had signed him to that same contract, they would have been the Detroit Tigers of the last six years, really, since the Meggie deal. You just, a team

in a small market can't afford to pay one player, 25% of its payroll. He makes more almost than the Cleveland Indians and entire team. So, you know, I think they dodged a huge bullet. I do think that these numbers for Frankie are just absurdly bad.

He's not that bad of a player. But he, you know, we're getting to the point in the season where you really, really have to start wondering what's going on with this guy. I do think he'll pick it up, but he's never going to live up to those dollars. Our guest is former ESPN anchor Jay Crawford, joining us here on Inside the Parker. Let Jay tell me you're a former pitcher. Tristan McKinsey has some great stuff. He had 10 strikeouts in his Major League debut,

but he was sent down this past week. He has a live arm, but he's walked. But he walks people. He's wild. He was leading the league in walks when he was sent down. Help me with this, Jay. Can you teach control, or is that something that a pitcher has to figure out for himself? Yeah, you can teach a pitcher control.

and a pitcher can certainly improve on his control. You know, it's weird. He was only down for one day because Zach, Lezac's injury led to Tristan being called back up to the big club. I don't think he's ready to pitch yet in the major leagues. You definitely hit it right on the head with the live arm. You know, he's just freakishly thin. He definitely hasn't grown into his man body yet. he's a kid.

And basically, to get to your question, I think all you have to do is look at the career of Randy Johnson as to whether or not a pitcher can learn to throw strikes, you know, can improve on that. There was a time early in Randy's career where he was averaging many walks per nine as he was strikeouts per nine. I know that's hard to believe. But he had a year early on where he was averaging eight walks per nine. and if you look at the trajectory of his career,

it didn't take him long to figure out that you've got to put the ball over the plate if you want to have any kind of success. And once he threw strikes and wasn't all over the place, his walks per nine came down. I think they were under three per nine for the last decade plus of his career. he may have had a couple of seasons where he was below two walks per nine. And there were many that thought that was never going to be possible for him. And they thought, you know, the only thing standing between this guy and the Hall of Fame is his inability to throw strikes.

But he figured it out, and Tristan will figure it out too. He's figured it out in stretches. And just as quickly as he gets it, it goes. And that's the sign of a young pitcher who's trying to learn how to be a pitcher. He's always been a thrower because he has such a live arm and he throws... Jay, tell me about the bullpen, which is one of the strong parts of this team as we're talking pitching. Who has the best arm out there? I like Karen Jack. I like him a lot. You know, he had a rough outing a couple of nights ago. up to that point he had been close to perfect. Their whole bullpen really has lived on the edge of perfection all season long,

and that's exactly why they're 26 and 20. Tito is doing now what he did in 2016. If you remember in 2016, he was turning everything into a six-inning game because he would turn it over to the bullpen for the seventh, eighth, and ninth, and, you know, he was using Brian Shaw a lot, and he just had the luxury of having a couple of great back-end relievers, and he's doing the same thing this year. Claude is a guy who almost lives in triple digits.

You know, when he doesn't throw a ball 100 miles an hour, to me it's a surprise. I wish he used his slider a little bit more. I think he relies too heavily on the fastball and team. have kind of figured that out, and they're sitting on it. Look, even if it's 1001, these guys are pro-hitters, they're going to square that up. But so far, Shaw has been, seems like he's reincarnated himself. He's added a few things.

And Karen Chek has just been absolutely amazing. And as I mentioned, Clos-Day, I think they've got, you know, one of the best bullpens in the game, and that's why they're where they are. It really is. one last thing for our guest jay crawford on the tribe in cleveland and jose ramirez we already know he's a stud at the plate and jay you touched on it briefly but is there enough in this lineup to really be able to compete over the long course of the season or do they need to add a bat at some point to shore up the lineup Yes, yes, and yes.

Friend Mareez heard himself a couple of nights ago. He was providing some nice protection for Jose Ramirez, who has just been, you know, probably one of the best bargain deals that the Indians have had in the last 10 years just in terms of team-friendly contracts. Those are the kind of deals that a small market club like Cleveland have to have more of. They can't, you know, they're never going to be a team that pays one player $30 million.

I just think that's bad economics anyhow for any team, but particularly for a small market team. But the question, Rob, is where the heck this big bat is going to come from? They do have some help down in the minor leagues that I imagine after June 1st. They can call up Bradley perhaps. They've got two guys in the minor league that I just can't seem to figure out. Bradley Zimmer, who a couple of years ago looked like he was on pace to have a terrific career as a five-tool guy. Injuries have really slowed him, and he didn't even make the big league roster this year. And you're talking about a team that was challenged when it comes to outfielders.

And then Oscar Mercado, who two seasons ago, was, I think, runner-up the rookie of the year. He had a phenomenal season, and it came from out of nowhere, really. and then he really gripped last year, and he struggled so mightily in spring training. He didn't make the team. So these are guys, if they ever figure out what their problems are, could definitely help tribe offense. But they're going to have to probably look to trade somebody,

maybe a young pitcher or something, because if they are going to try to compete, and the longer you get into the season, and they're still within striking distance to the White Sox, you really have to think about doing that, because, Rob, as you look at the American League, I don't know that there's going to be a wild card that's not an American League East team. Right.

When you look at what's going on there with the race now getting red hot, the Yankees have turned it around, and the Red Sox are playing lights out, I don't know that there's going to be a wild card that doesn't come from the ALE. So if they get into August and they're within a couple of games of the White Sox, they may need to pull the trigger on a move because, it might be one of those years where if you don't win the division, you're not making it. I think you're right. I think the AL East is top heavy big time, no doubt about it.

BS analytics is his game. What do you got for me, Anthony? In this day and age of a no-no every other day, it seems, pitchers are getting a lot of love lately. Pitch arsenals are getting nastier, and certain pitches can take your breath away. Now, think of the famous pitches of hurlers pass and how you remember them all.

Nolan Ryan's fastball, Randy Johnson slider, Roger Clemens, split. How great were those pitches at keeping runs off the board? Well, nowadays, we can track that with pitch-run values. With win-probability graphs, every moment in a game affects each team's odds of winning, even by thousands of a point. If a pitcher consistently gets outs with one pitch, you can add up all those decimals and get an idea of the true value of some of baseball's best pitches. It's golf rules, so if the lower number, the better. Look at the base numbers of Trevor Bowers' four-seem fastball this year and see that the league is hitting 107 against the pitch.

That's great, of course. The run value of that pitch is minus 17, far and away, the most productive pitch this season in terms of volume as well as success. And in that top five as well, U. Darvish's slider, no surprise. But the only pitcher with two different pitches in terms of run values in the top 10 of the league, that would be the Giants, Kevin Gosman, whose four-seamer at minus 12 and Splitter at minus 9, both rank as two of the top offerings in the league, helping his Renaissance by the Bay this season. season. Nastiness can now be quantified. That ball is. It was a big week in the big leagues.

Who's up? Who's up? Or is it fair? And now from MLBbro.com, here's J.R. Gamble. The Blue Jays in Tampa Bay Rays both entered the season as Dark Horse picks to compete with the Yankees in the AL East. After this past weekend's four games, swears. Weep, J.R., is it foul or fair to say that Toronto is the pretender and Tampa Bay is the real contender for this division? That's fair. It's a fair ball.

Since a 1-0 lost to the Yankees on May 12th, the race had won 11 games in a row before losing a 2-1 nail-biter to the Royals on Wednesday night, and they handily just swept the Blue Jays out of the Pretenders' playoff race, winning four from a team that was feeling real good about themselves in their young power led by Vlad Guerrero Jr.

And Marcus Simeon, just 50 games into the season, they were thinking they had a shot in the rough and tough ALE's division. I think the race left no doubt as to who the contender is and who the pretender is. Every year they seem to compete

with a bunch of retreads and young promising kids, solid pitching, solid defense, and Randy and Rosarina is heating up again after the league started figuring him out following that historic playoff run and World Series. He played baseball in college. Now here is MLB knowledge. A big shout out to the umpire Joe West, the man known as Cowboy Joe, breaking an 80-year-old record when he umpired his 5,000, 3, and 76th game. The record became official in the fifth inning of a recent Cardinals White Sox game. West began his major league career in umpiring at the age of 23, and over the years has been no stranger to controversy, but 45 years of umpiring games. Pretty big deal. During his career, West has umpired in three All-Star games and six World Series. He's been on the field for many of baseball's greatest moments over the years, including Willie McCovey's 500th home run and Nolan Ryan's fifth no hitter. As for how much longer Wes plans to umpire, he says he'll evaluate at the end of the season, but added that he feels pretty good after recent knee surgery.
