This is an I-Heart podcast.
Guaranteed Human.
Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite.
Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends.
Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman
help make you funnier.
This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel,
help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Where does your group perform?
We do some retirement homes.
Those people are starving for banter.
Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel
and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged.
It's the enhanced games.
Some call it grotesque.
Others say it's unleashing human potential.
Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes
for a full year.
Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds.
I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth.
Listen to Superhuman on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.

84's big to me.
I'm Sam J.
And I'm Alex English.
Each episode, we pick a year,
unpack what went down,
and try to make sense of how we survived it.
With our friends, fellow comedians,

Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s.
84 was a wild year. I don't think there's a more important year for black people.

Welcome into the show today
I'm your host Rob Parker
What a podcast we have planned for you
Andrew Jones
The 5-time All-Star and 10-time
Gold Glob winner
He will join us
Also
Preston Wilson
Who won a World Series with the Cardinals
Does TV and radio work
We'll chat with him
Plus
Phil Sanchez's diamond dust
Let's go
It's getting
Rob's hot take on the three biggest stories in Major League Baseball.
Number one.
Stop the presses.
You mean it's not automatic that the Dodgers are going to win the National League West?
They've won the previous seven National League West titles.
And now there's the team from the South down in San Diego, the Padres, who are scorching hot as of Monday.
beating the Dodgers on an eight-game winning streak.
And you know what?
The Padres have already assured themselves of their first winning season in 10 years.
And soon they'll lock up their first trip to the playoffs since 2014.
So a lot has happened signing Mani Machado a year ago.
People scoffed at it.
Fernando Tatis Jr. has blossomed into a big star.
They picked up Mike Clevenger.
from the Indians.
He pitched a shutout in his first start for the Padres.
This team is for real.
And I don't know if it's just about winning the NL West
or if they do not have a shot
to maybe even win the World Series
or get to the World Series
in this 60 game short and season.
What a fun team to watch.
You hear those footsteps?
Those are the San Diego Padres.
Number two.
Albert Pujolos has done.
done it. On Sunday, he tied Willie Mays with 660 Major League home runs. Yes, tying him for fifth
place on baseball's all-time home run list. Only four players in Major League Baseball history
have now hit more home runs than Albert Pooleholst. What a career he has had, first with the St. Louis
Cardinals, and now with the...
Angels of Anaheim. And think about this. His 20-year career includes reaching 3,000 hits in 2018.
He recently also passed A-Rod and became second on the all-time RBI list. And pool host also passed
Craig Bezio for fifth on the all-time doubles list with 669. And he is the only player to ever
joined a 650 home run and 650 doubles club.
What an unbelievable career for Albert Pujols.
I know a lot of people have poo-pooed him since he went to Anaheim
and the winning has stopped.
And maybe he doesn't hit for the average that he used to when he was in St. Louis.
But what a magnificent career that Albert Pujolos has had.
You're witnessing one of the greatest players in baseball history.
Number three.
Major League Baseball has announced this postseason 2020 schedule, and you know what?
It's highlighted by the first neutral site fall classic in modern history.
That's right.
Major League Baseball will play the World Series in Arlington at the new Globe Life Field,
home of the Texas Rangers that opened that stadium this year, unfortunately, with no fans,
Game one of the World Series starts Tuesday, October 20th in Arlington.
And wow, to think that that's where we are.
We know that there's a new playoff format.
The Wild Cards get started with a best of three.
The Division Series are best of five.
And, of course, best of seven in the league championship series and the World Series.
So that'll be very, very interesting.
and the other part is the new format, of course, has the eight teams in each league making the playoffs.
So that'll be the first time.
16 of the 30 teams will make the Major League Baseball playoffs.
But this will definitely be interesting to see the World Series played on one field, one bubble, if you will, in Arlington come October.
Yes, October baseball is the best.
This is just a twist that we've never seen, but then again, this is 2020.
When Rob was a newspaper columnist, he lived by this motto.
If I'm writing, I'm ripping.
Let's bring in a writer or broadcaster, old or new.
All right, let's welcome into the podcast, a guy who could track it down in the outfield.
Atlanta Braves Hall of Famer, Andrew Jones.
Welcome to the podcast, Andrew. How you doing?
I'm doing good.
are you doing great Andrew is brought to you here today by prize picks we'll get into that in a
little bit but first Andrew yes I would like to talk about your Atlanta Braves who currently are in
first place in the NLEs they got a good young exciting team Ronald Ocuna Jr. Freddie Freeman
I love that team do you like that team I love the team I actually yes I still work for them
So, yeah, I mean, they're excited.
They, you know, too bad right now.
We lost probably two good arms.
But, you know, this year is one of those years that we just don't know what's going to happen.
You know, a lot of people want, you know, if you're a big fan, you want to go out there
and find a piece to get to the championship.
But it's hard to, you know, let some good prospect go right now for such a short period of a time.
So I think they just have to kind of block it to go.
and make, you know, make whatever you have work.
And hopefully it click right in the right time in the playoff and, you know,
they end up winning a World Series.
Last year was disappointing.
The Braves had a great season.
And then they got knocked out in the playoffs.
It's a young team where guys able to –
it seemed like they were able to bounce back, though, you know,
that it wasn't the end of the world because they're right back in first place this year.
Well, I think what kind of was, you know, it hurtless.
a bit because the way they went down with the Cardinals.
But they know they were better than that, and they know that they got a great team.
So when we came into spring training, while we were talking about is let's bounce back
and have a great season and get back to the playoff and we know what we need to do to carry it
on to the World Series.
Our guest is Andrew Jones.
Yes, he won 10 gold gloves, five-time All-Star, played with the Braves, of course, Dodgers,
Rangers, White Sox, Yankees, even in Japan.
What do you make of this short season?
You know, 60 games, it's unbelievable, Andrew.
We got less than two weeks to play, and the baseball season is going to be over,
and we'll start the playoffs.
How do you think it's gone so far with no fans and playing like every day almost?
Be honest with you.
I will just talk about it yesterday with a buddy, and I just say,
hey, we only got 11 games to the playoffs start.
So it's weird, you know, it's very weird.
You know, I'm trying to keep up with them to a TV sometimes,
but it's weird that you cannot go there and support your team and watch the game.
So, you know, six games, like I say,
six things are so soft with this, you know, with this old coronavirus pandemic thing.
You know, they work something out to play baseball.
So I'm happy that they came into agreement to let those guys go out there
and play the game that they love,
that they, you know, and that the fans love to see them play.
So tough, but I'm happy that they, you know, they got games going.
So like I say, it's such a short season.
We don't know what can happen.
You can see a lot of teams that that's going to make the playoff
that people didn't think that they were going to be close to make the playoff.
So this is a weird change, but I think it's really good for those.
teams that are small market, then that is getting an opportunity to be in the playoff on this
full season. No doubt. It looks like the Marlins got a shot to be in the playoffs. I don't think
most people thought about that. One thing that's different coming up that was announced,
Andrew, is that there'll be no days off for players because there's no travel. Everybody's going
to be in the same spot. So what do you make with that? Just to play every day, at least through the
first three rounds, there'll be days off for the World Series. But not.
for the first three rounds.
You think that's a good idea, baseball just every day?
I know for the best of seven in the NLS or the ALS.
Right.
I think, you know, best of seven is tough to go without day off.
But I think the first two ones are very pretty manageable
because, like you say, it's no travel.
People can't handle them and be there
and just play the game and move on.
I think the last day off you have,
the better you can manage it
because you cannot lay your head down on the next day.
You're just going to keep move on.
You know, it's like we always say the team that stay hard in the playoff
is the one that's going to carry on
and go all the way to the World Series.
In the National League, I just want to ask you,
the Dodgers, Padres,
Braves, Braves, there's some really good teams.
All right, tell me about prize picks, which is basically what a single game,
and you can bet whether a player will go over or under their projected stats.
That sounds like that's pretty good, and it doesn't take that long to play,
two or five minutes to play.
Tell me about it.
Well, I mean, I've been with Price case since 2019.
I got involved with them.
We part them up.
You know, I'm part of the company.
So why did I like more about it?
It was easy to play.
It's so easy.
All you have to do, open the app, pick four players, under or over,
and you press one button and it's in.
So you get chance to...
Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged.

I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know.
I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack.
so I'm starting to see that there's a through line.
We also have AIDS on the table right now.
Thank you for finishing that sentence.
I don't think there's a more important year for black people.

Yeah.
For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history.

The analytic numbers you need to know, well, maybe.
Anthony Masterson is his name.
BS analytics is his game.
What do you got for me, Anthony?
Everyone loves a dinger, right?
But are they all created equal?
Of all the major sports, baseball has the ability to be the quirkiest.
Sure, arenas and other sports might be different or nicer than others.
But once you step on the court or the ice or the field, the game is the same,
played with the same rules and same dimensions.
However, at baseball stadiums, a 315-foot fly ball to right field can clear the short porch at Yankee Stadium,
but that same flyball would be caught 50 feet in front of the wall at Coors Field in Denver.
Now, with stat-cast data much more prevalent now, we can overlay every flyball hit with every stadium around the league
to determine how much of a, no-douder, the home run actually was.
Baseball Savant now has all home runs broken down into categories.
Doubters?
mostly gone and no doubters. No doubters, of course, home runs that would be out at all 30
stadiums, mostly gone between 8 and 29 stadiums and doubters from seven stadiums or fewer.
Now, digging into the data reveals another beauty of baseball, and that's that age ain't
nothing but a number. The leaders in no doubters this season are 40-year-old Nelson Cruz and
21-year-old Fernando Tatis Jr. with 11 no-doubts. In fact, Tatea's home runs would be out at an average of
17.4 ballparks around the league far and away the highest market baseball.
Now, is there any doubt about Tatis winning the MVP this season?
Maybe only Mookie will have something to say about it.
That ball is.
It was a big week in the big leagues.
Or is it fair?
And now, here's shadowleague.com MLB insider J.R. Gamble.
After 34 years, the Mets and the Sterling Group finally completed a sale of the team to Stephen Cohen for $2.4 billion.
J.R., is it foul or fair to say that this is a good thing for Mets fans?
Fair.
It's a fair ball.
The day most Mets fans have been waiting for is finally here.
They actually should be a status.
Mecks have been majority owned by the Wilpon's family since 1986, and in 2002 they bought the remaining shares of the franchise.
The only World Series title they have to show is the year the Wilpons bought the team.
So basically, it's been all downhill since then.
They did manage to get the two World Series, but those teams were always a piece short, a couple of Wilpon dollars short.
Fans have long complained that the Wilpon's are more interested in keeping their billions rather than going out.
and getting high-priced free agents who can help the team over the World Series home.
Ever since, the MAD off fiasco, where they reportedly lost the grip in his Ponzi scheme,
the Mets have been penny-pinses in comparison to the Yankees and other big market clubs.
It's been obvious.
This is a day of rejoiced for the Mets fans.
As Steve Cohen 64 has an estimated net worth of more than $14 billion per four,
I was personally rooted for A-Rod and J-Lo to win the bid
because of their youth, popularity, and excitement,
as well as the fact that A-Rod would be an owner that actually understands the game
from the players on up, which benefits the fans as is rare in ownership.
On the flip side, this is just another business endeavor for Cohen,
a new toy for a guy with so much money,
so we'll have to see how he treats his players
and how much say he wants to have in personal decisions.
It could be a godsend if he steps back, opens up the wallet, and lets the baseball people do what they do.
A major market like the Mets needs more star power.
The fans deserve better.
Maybe Cohen is the guy to finally change three decades of being stepchildren, dozing at the wheel, in a city that never sleep.

I'm trashing Tigers GM Alavila because it's fun.
The Tigers, I believe, were one game out of the final playoff spot
when the trade deadline came.
And while he didn't sell, he just sat there and did nothing.
In this short and season, there was an opportunity to bring some hope back to Tigers fans.
Instead, we'll wind up suffering through who knows how many more years of rebuild
as they just don't have the horses for 162 games.
There you go.
If you want to chime in and have your tweet read next week, hit me up on my Twitter at Rob Parker FS1.

and Laird.
Oh, it's so good.
All right, now let's welcome to the podcast, Preston Wilson,
who of course won the World Series with the St. Louis Cardinals
was the National League RBI leader in 2003 and an all-star that season as well.
Preston, welcome to the podcast.
How you doing, buddy?
I'm doing well.
Thank you guys for having me, man.
Man, I appreciate it.
And I want to pepper you, of course, you've done TV work as well,
analyzing the game after your performance.
playing days. I want to pepper you with a couple of questions about baseball and the
Marlins. Let's start there. They have a shot to make the play. Are they for real the
Marlins? You know what? With this new, with the way they're setting it out now with the new
wild card spots and all of that, man, I think they got a chance. You know, they just took
five or seven from the Phillies. They got a good, exciting young court. The one thing they have
now that they get, have a few years ago, is they have guys that have talent. They make
struggle every now and then, but they have talent that's going to pop.
And they added Marte, Rojas coming back with a big shot in arm for them.
I think they might be all right, man.
I think they can hold on to this thing.
Yeah, because people were criticizing Jeter when they stripped the team down.
But maybe they do have a plan and maybe it'll work.
Tell me this.
When was the last time, well, before Jeter took over,
named the last Marlins prospect that anybody was ever talking about.
That's the point.
That's the point.
There should be one that pops off the top.
off of your head.
Like,
there's every organization
where there's this
one guy coming.
And once Jose Fernandez
was in the big leagues,
they had nobody that anybody
was like,
this guy's going to be the next guy
who's going to be a star
for the team who's going to be,
you know,
an everyday all-star
possibly type player.
So what they did
was they get at the minor league
organization,
and they went out and got
good talent evaluators
and they found athletes.
I knew that Marlins
were in trouble a few years ago
when they needed a player
and they had to
trade for Steve Lombardoz.
Now, that's not a knock on Steve Lombardoz.
I think he did the best he could
with his talent. He had a good
career, long career. But if you
were a team, you should not have to trade
for that guy. You should have two of those guys in your
organization already. No doubt. What about
the raise? Can they make it to the
World Series with their
pitching staff? They lead the
AL East and they got
arms. They got a lot
of arms and they seem to have some more that they can
just call on at any time. I mean, you
look at the guys they can pull out of that bullpen of Castillo.
I mean, just fair back.
These guys, I mean, Nick Anderson, these guys are top-notch guys,
and you add a smell at the top of that rotation.
Glass-cota has the prompts that he has with that big arm.
I think they can do it.
I really do.
I think they can do it.
Pitching is what you need.
The one thing that stops any good team in the postseason is pitching, and they got that.
Our guest is Preston Wilson, the former Major League Outfield.
broadcaster, a Preston.
What about, did the Indians make a mistake trading Mike Clevenger?
He pitched a shutout for the Padres in his first start.
This is a tough one for me.
And I will say this simply because the Indians have proven
that they really do care about your character as far as what you bring to the table
in the clubhouse.
And I think there was a very big, there's a lot of damage done.
in the eyes of that organization with Clevenger being part of, you know, the whole deal with
with PSAC and those guys not maintaining the protocols that they had.
Do I think it hurt the Indians?
It definitely hurt the Indians.
I mean, he's got a great arm.
He's got great stuff.
He knows how to pitch.
Is it a mistake?
That depends on what vein you're looking at.
Like, how are you judging this as far?
Is it a mistake as far as Winston W's or is it a mistake as far as what you're trying to
establish in as far as what you want your team and your organization?
should be about. No doubt. You know, everybody knows your stepdad is Mookie Wool.

Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tap Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs?
Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people.
I know what you're thinking.
What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim?
Well, you can find out on the Look Back at a podcast.
I'm Sam Jette.
And I'm Alex English.
Each episode, we pick a here.
unpack what went down and try to make sense of how we survived it.
Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill,
waxing all about crack in the 80s.
To be clear, 84 is big to me not just because of crack.
I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know.
I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack,
so I'm starting to see that there's a through line.
We also have AIDS on the table right now, so.
Thank you finishing that sentence.
Yes.
I don't think there's a more important year for Black.
Black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in
American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you

therapist, Kear Games. And in recognition of mental health awareness month, I'm bringing over a decade
of my own experience in the mental health field and conversations with so many incredible guests.
I'm talking, Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing,
We get so wrapped up in the chase
that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing
and we're still chasing it
and we don't know when we've done enough
because people scoreboard watch.
Life becomes about wins and losses.
Steve Burns, Dustin Ross,
because you find it important to be a good person
while you hear on earth
or are you a good person because you're afraid?
Because that's two different intentions, bro.
Absolutely.
And that's two different levels of trust.
I want you to just really be a good person.

So, of course, won the World Series in 1986 with the Mets, a part of one of the most famous
plays in the history of baseball, the ball going through Bill Buckner's legs.
But Preston, there's a lot of fathers and sons in the major leagues, a lot of sons of fathers,
I should say, who are, who's the best kid out there.
There's Tatis.
There's, I mean, he's gotten all the headlines this year,
but there's a number of young players out there.
Charlie Hayes' son just came up.
Who do you like?
Oh, man, I've been impressed with a lot of these kids.
I think Vladimir Guerrero's son is going to make, he's going to, you know,
be what people thought he was.
You know, I think he just needed a little timely adjustment,
and I think he was the guy in Toronto that he did so much damage early
that everybody really studied him and tried to figure out how to expose him.
Kevin Vigio, I think, is going to be really good.
I like him a lot.
But when you talk about the guy who right now is just bringing it every day seemingly
and is affecting every game, whether it be on defense or offense,
you've got to go with Catee's Jr.
And the kid's amazing.
He really is.
I think he has a chance to win the MVP.
The other thing, last thing, the Dodgers have won seven straight national
League West division titles.
What's your hunch?
Do the Padres catch him?
What do the Dodgers hold them off?
I feel like the Dodgers
is going to hold. I love Dave Roberts.
You know, I think he's a
tremendous stabilizing force for that team.
You know, if they can stay healthy,
if they can keep Kirchard's back healthy
and keep that lineup intact,
I think they hold on to it.
And I think this might be the year that Dodgers won at all.
I really do.
It would be about time since 1988.
His name is Preston Wilson, the former Major League outfielder.
Preston, thanks for joining the podcast.
Appreciate you.
Thank you.
Anytime, man.
Call me whatever you want me on again.
I love talking baseball with you.

And there they go.
Almost on time this morning.
Mom is coming out the front door strong with a double-armed kid carry.
Looks like dad has the bags.
is bringing up the rear. Oh, but the diaper bag wasn't closed. Diapers and toys are everywhere.
Ooh, but Mom has just nailed the perfect car seat buckle for the toddler. And now the eldest
daughter, who looks to be about nine or ten, has secured herself in the booster seat. Dad
zips the bag closed, and they're off. Ah, but looks like Mom doesn't realize her coffee cup
is still on the roof of the car, and there it goes. Oh, that's a shame. That mug,
was a fam favorite.

Now it's time for some diamond dust with Wish TV's Phil Sanchez.
Out of here!
He played baseball in college.
Now here is MLB knowledge.
Well, Christmas came early in Queens, New York.
Met fans are ecstatic over the news that the team is finally being sold.
This after the team released a statement saying they have come to an agreement to sell the team for $2.6 billion.
The new owner, billionaire and lifelong Mets fans, Steve Cohen.
The deal still needs to be approved by Major League Baseball and a majority of the other owners in the league.
But the hardest part is done, and that, of course, was to get the Wilpon to own the team to finally realize that they,
were awful and needed to sell.
So once Cohen takes over control,
he will easily become the richest owner
in all of Major League Baseball history.
Is that worth?
$14 billion.
In fact, he's the second wealthiest owner
in all of sports behind the clippers Steve Balmer.
And if you're wondering,
is he going to spend money, of course, on the team?
Well, just think about this for a second.
The guy has an art collection
estimated to be worth $1 billion,
and he's said to have been the inspiration
for the character Bobby Axelrod on the show Billions.
In short, Steve Cohen doesn't like to lose.
And as a diehard Mets fan, this is our World Series.
Closer.
Track one.
Strike two.
The right three.
Here's why MLB is better than the NFL or NBA.
And it isn't even close.
Here's another reason why Major League Baseball is better than the NBA and the NFL.
just take a look at the sale of the New York Mets to Steve Cohen.
When you think of the Mets, they're a middle of the road Major League Baseball team.
They're not one of the Primo franchises.
And guess what they went for?
$2.4 billion.
More than the Brooklyn Nets went for.
More than the Carolina Panthers went for in 2018.
Think about that.
That's how healthy Major League Baseball.
is that an also-ran team like the Mets that have won one World Series since 1986
fetches $2.4 billion in a sale.
That is an incredible number.
Can you imagine if the Yankees, Red Sox, or Dodgers went on the market what they would
fetch?
Unbelievable money keeps pouring in to Major League Baseball.
In the words of New York TV legend
