and a lot of the sports podcast networks that have kind of been popping up. I think this is really interesting because this is kind of like whether you like it or not, and I certainly have mixed feelings about it. like gambling and sports are really going to become super, super intertwined in mainstream culture, especially as it hits California and the remaining big states that have and illegalize it. I think this week we've started to see some of the complications of that. Last night you had KD somewhat hilariously dunking on a dude who blew a parlay because Kevin Durant was under on something.

But you also had Calvin Ridley, an NFL wide receiver costing himself millions of of dollars after it was revealed that he had bet on NFL games. I think you put $1,500 on games or something. I don't really understand, to be completely honest, why there's such a firewall around this when every person in the world is going to have these apps on their phone. And when members of Congress are allowed to trade stocks in companies that they're regulating, why players are not allowed to put $50 on their own team? It doesn't. It doesn't seem like it would be that hard to regulate who's throwing games or something like that. Like, do you, what do you guys think? Do we have to keep players separate from that? Or is this just sort of like witch hunty with Calvin Ridley and shit?

I think it's, I think it really comes down to are you betting on your team or against your team, right? Like, if you're betting against your team, okay, that's a fucking problem. Absolutely. Yeah. That's when it bleeds over to not just gambling. You are fucking with the, you know, I hate to be one of these sports writing side of a mother. Oh, God. The integrity of the game, which is very much important. Like, you know, all jokes is like. No, I'll joke aside. We can't have motherfuckers throwing games, man. We can't. You know what I mean?

Well, especially not a piece, especially not gambling is legal and there's a billion dollars on every fucking game and have like that's where that's where that's where the. Integrity of the game is the rubber meets the road on the integrity of the sport. And America integrity is very, you know, it's we don't see much of it in most shit. So I don't know. That's why I'm like, I hate that term, but I get exactly what you're saying. But yeah. But the thing is. is like you Calvin really is going to be made an example of like you know the the marriage of

the public embracing of sports and gambling is something very new you know what I'm saying and Calvin really was kind of the first athlete to cross that line so they're going to make an example of them because you can't risk losing gamblers because they think that players are fucking up the lines or are throwing games are fucking with their money you know what I mean so they're going to have to come down on the thing is you're going to have to come down hard on this gamble to protect, you know, gambling's integrity. I'm using that word again. People gambling on him.

Right. Yeah, right. Yeah. That's an oxymoron itself, but that's what they're doing. They're saying, look, we still want you, we are not going to fuck up our gambling money by letting this guy slide because he's an athlete who games. We're going to come down harder and let him know that there's no place for athletes to gamble.

It's just for, you know, non-athletes of the common folk. You know what I mean? So, yeah, he's, he was made a fucking harsh example of, but I mean, you had to have known, bro. You can't fucking gamble if you're an athlete, man. Why don't you get somebody else to do it? We talked about that early. Me and Tyler were like,

dog, it's, why didn't you get, bro, it's $1,500. Get some, put, put it in your, in your child's name. I don't know. I mean, in this situation where you're losing this amount of money, you know, that supports your family,

it would have been better to, you know, gambling your child's name than doing this, you know what I'm saying? But, like, also like, we talked about this as well. Like, it was, it, was it an eight, eight game parlay or was that what it was? Like, there was one, like, eight leg parlay, bro.

Well, I have a, I have a friend who does go in and out of gambling for some of those reasons who pointed out that because of the lack of punctuation in his tweet, what he actually tweeted was, I bet $50, I bet you $500. I don't have a gambling problem. Like, what he meant to say was, I bet $1,500, period.

I don't have a gambling problem. What he said was, I bet $1,500 I don't have a gambling problem. You want to gamble with me about my gambling problem. I don't know. Talk about the integrity of gambling and, like, NFL talking about integrity in general or the game or whatever. Like, I don't know.

It's all kind of silly. I get why that decision was made, but it's a joke coming from the NFL who lacks all integrity and talking about gambling. Like, I don't know, bro. It's just, it's all stupid to me. This is the world we live in, guys. nothing makes sense even though it does make sense

it's it's the thing that makes it makes sense is obviously the amount of dollars that it makes the tax benefits that like the state of new york was saying that they got from the first month of legalized sports gambling is like california's out here already sitting on a fat surplus because of uh because of legal weed sales you throw gambling in we might actually have fully funded public schools for the first time and it's kids can take They're books home. Like, it's such big business.

Sheesh. Right. Right. Kids might get new textbooks. But like we did, we constructed a society as a species where that's what the incentives are. I mean, it's fucked up beyond belief. But it's also like open the tap up. You know what I mean?

I guess. Like, I guess that's where we're going to. Also, he couldn't play. He wasn't playing in those games. Let's talk about. We didn't talk about that. But he wasn't playing in those games. He was hurt.

So I don't know. I think you should be able to take those things in consideration at least. At least, you know what I mean? I agree. And I agree with Ty, like the year's suspension clearly was like looking to make an example out of him, you know, very clearly. And I, you know, they probably did that. I would also agree with Tyler as far as gambling on your own stuff. Like when you know professional athletes or even college athletes, it's made very clear to everyone that you have to avoid that stuff.

Uh, at the penalty at the, at the, at the most extreme penalty. This is not a, we can't find anything in your bag. It's not supposed to be in there. It's a like, you know, college basketball coaches cannot do like charity tournament brackets. You know what I mean? Like you can't do anything. You can't offer an opinion on, oh, I think that team might be that team, whatever. Like everything might get away with murder, but you can't get away with somebody's money in this country.

You know what I'm saying? Like facts. Well, I think a lot of people were understandably very upset about that with the NFL. Like this punishment is so much harsher than, you know, penalties. for domestic abuse penalties for things that we consider, I think any human being would consider a significantly worse offense than to have put an eight-game parlay down. But it's what Tyler said.

The NFL doesn't mind people thinking, oh, there's some people in the league who aren't good people, but they do mind gamblers. And that's my issue with them bringing up integrity. Only one of those things. Yeah, absolutely. I think your issue is like a plus 100%. Fuck everybody.

I think it was a Chris Ballard story in Sports Illustrated when he was still with the Lakers about how every time a game starts, he like gets in his car and goes for a drive because his doctors were telling him that his blood pressure is getting to like fatal levels when he's actually watching a basketball game from a team that he's the general manager of. So I knew he was kind of a crazy dude then. And I heard some stories from Kobe that Kobe was like, the reason that Kobe bonded with Jerry West is because he was like, you're like me. And it was like, okay, if Kobe feels like that about you, you are probably a psychopath off the

What was funny is like, like I used to think that him getting that MVP, even though they lost, was like, oh, like, oh, he was that cold. You know what I mean? Now I kind of feel like it's patronizing. It's like, bro, you lost six times. I guess we'll get you this MVP. Because we, you know what I'm saying? Yeah, they, they basically kind of created that to acknowledge Jerry West while he was getting his ass beat for six straight miles. That's what it seems like in the show.

That's what seems like a show. And I didn't think that prior. Yeah. That does sound like hell. Loses six times in the finals in a row. Like after the fourth time, you're thinking this can't possibly get any worse. Oh, it can, baby.

That's crazy. Anyway, they're already talking about doing another one of these for the Kobe and Shaq era. And I'm just like, I would watch 600 episodes of this TV show. Adam McKay is a good dude to do this too, because it's like, there's just serious things. I mean, they started off with, with, I was really young and I was like, I didn't really fully fathom like HIV. You know what I mean?

Like, I could, I didn't even truly fathom death at that time. You know what I mean? So I knew it wasn't a, it was, I thought it would be something fatal, but it didn't, I didn't understand the full gravity of the situation, right? And oddly enough at my big age, seeing that image of, or seeing that video of him leaving the hospital. And, you know, old boy, just breaking down. I'm crying at that moment. I was like, oh, shit. Magic really has HIV.

I never, I never think it when I see him, obviously. Who thinks shit when you see, you know what I'm saying? He's a very healthy, happy person. Right. You know what I'm saying? Like, in these days, this day and age, it's not abnormal. What have to happen is not a death system as it was back then. But like, that was wild to me.

That made that, like that moment helped, like starting off the show that way, I realized the gravity of that situation, what, 20 years later? you know if not more yeah and i that's what i i appreciate the time traveler aspect of the show too because i think we all grew up in the post lakers celtics world and it's just impossible to really wrap your head around i've read it a hundred fucking times oh the nba's on the verge of bankruptcy oh the white versus black dynamic of larry bird and magic johns like i've read all that stuff but it is different when you see it happening and especially when it's a filmmaker as good as Adam McKay because you really do get pulled completely into it.

So I'm beyond excited. I hope there's 20 episodes in the season. I'm sure it's going to be the six episode shit and leave me very sad in a month and a half. But yeah, I'm with you guys. So I think we can keep talking about that on the midweek show. Nice to have a TV show to talk about because I'm assuming most of you listening to this are watching the show too.
