But how long can this alliance last? Tell me what you know.

Starting point is 00:02:41 We are packed, jammed on a Friday. Live in Los Angeles, IHeart Radio, Fox Sports Radio, and FS1. Absolute pleasure to have you in today. I love being here. Urban Meyer in 15 minutes. Going to talk about the NFL draft, DeWain Haskins, his Buckeye players. Can't wait for that. The entire new college football crew at Fox is going to stop by our show today.
Starting point is 00:03:03 So last night, and I've been saying this now for the last month, Kevin Durant's the world's best basketball player. He does not have Magic Johnson's charisma. He does not have kind of Michael Jordan's, I guess almost used the word charisma. He's not an icon at 16 years old like LeBron James, but at different times, Magic was the world's best basketball player, Michael was the world's best basketball player. LeBron was the best basketball player for about 10 years.
Starting point is 00:03:36 And Kevin Durant's now the world's best basketball player. Last night was a clinic. He got poked in the ribs. Got poked in the ribs. Steve Curry even poked him in the ribs a little bit. He came out last night. Game was over in eight minutes. Best basketball player in the world. I mean, the guy's unbelievable.
Starting point is 00:03:52 Yonis, sorry, doesn't shoot threes. Doesn't handle the ball like KD. Steph doesn't have his size, his length. James Hardin doesn't. have his overall game, not the defender, not the length, not as athletic. This is the world's best basketball player. I'm not saying the gap between him and LeBron is gigantic, but this is it. This is what it looks like. And when he joined the Golden State Warriors, he joined it for basketball reasons. He's like, I can't win titles with Crazy Westbrook. He joined it for
Starting point is 00:04:21 basketball reasons and winning basketball. Those are the right reasons. This is why he shouldn't go to New York, because he's not joining New York for basketball reasons. I had dinner. about a week ago with Mark Few, the coach of Gonzaga. And I asked him, he was at the mini camp this summer with USA basketball, and Hardin was there, and Westbrook was there, and Kevin Durant was there. And I'm not going to give away most of the private conversation, but I did ask him about Durant, and he just laughed. Mark Few just laughed.
Starting point is 00:04:49 He went, man, man. You know who else had that response? Mike Shishowski, the first time he was asked about LeBron James, that he saw him. I remember that. His Shishchevsky was like about LeBron, man, when talent evaluators like Mark Few and Mike Shishowski can't explain a guy. It's like, wow, yeah, yeah, you can't stop that guy. I mean, that is what you have right now. And last night he got poked in the ribs and completely dominated the game.
Starting point is 00:05:21 And here's what I say. When you work your entire life to be great at something, LeBron worked his entire life to be great. at something. And you become the best at something, what Kevin Durant is. You keep your foot on the pedal. Okay, now, LeBron James went to Los Angeles
Starting point is 00:05:41 and I understood it because he'd been the best basketball player in the world for about a decade or more. And you can make an argument. LeBron said, listen, I can sense it. I'm not quite the same player. I don't have the energy. I'm going to move into business. I got that with Michael Jordan, and I get it with LeBron.
Starting point is 00:05:57 But that's not the case with Kevin Durant. Kevin Durant's got three to four more prime years. He's worked his entire life to be the best basketball player in the world. He is it. You do not move away from basketball. Now, if he wants to come back with a new arena and then maybe he gets banged up a little and then he thinks, you know what, man, I'm on the back nine. And then Kevin wants to go to New York. I get it. But last night was another example. He is just crazy. The NBA is full of great basketball players. Even among the greatest basketball players. Yonness, Steph, Hardin, Durant's a notch above.
Starting point is 00:06:33 He just, he gets his shot whenever he wants it. And Marcus Thompson covers him. He's writing a book on Kevin Durant. We had him at the end of our show yesterday, Marcus Thompson. He's got the closest relationship with Kevin Durant, any money in the American media. It was a fascinating interview. I just sat here just asking quick questions and listening.
Starting point is 00:06:52 And again, he's not magic personality-wise. He doesn't have the charisma, doesn't dress. like Jordan, who always looked like a model. He doesn't have the iconic 15 years old, the chosen one like LeBron. But he's a different cat, but he's unbelievable. Here's Marcus. Kevin Durant, you got to work
Starting point is 00:07:11 to get to him. Like, he makes you work. He is so personable. Like, he's a human. Like, he's the most human guy I've ever covered. Right? Yes, no question. He feels, like, he talks to you. He feels what you're
Starting point is 00:07:26 saying. Like, you can have a, you can have an existential conversation with him. No question. Like, he loves to talk. You know, when he gets mad at you, he's going to let you know. When you say something funny, he's going to laugh. Like, he's that way. Kevin Durand is like, you go in there, you pride him. You know, you're going to get something from him off the bat.
Starting point is 00:07:44 Yeah. So again, we've had different times in the history of the NBA, and I've watched it for four decades. Sometimes the best basketball player, Kareem, was kind of aloof and quiet. Sometimes the best basketball player, Magic Johnson, had a huge personality. Sometimes he's been polarizing LeBron James. Kevin's the best basketball
Starting point is 00:08:04 player in the world. And he's not like everybody else. He's a little more sensitive. He's real. You poke him. He responds. But God last night was a clinic. He's just a clinic. There's great and then there's Durant. And it's an amazing
Starting point is 00:08:19 place to be in your life. You work your butt off your entire life to be the best radio guy, the best landscaper, the best lawyer, the best what-evs and you get there. You don't take your foot off the gas. You take your foot off your gas in four years when you're out of your prime and you want to go to New York.
Starting point is 00:08:36 You don't take it off now. You stay in basketball, Nirvana in Oakland, and you win every last game you can. All right, let me shift to this. I got to admit, I looked really. I looked really smart last night. Weren't you watching that Sixers game and gone, I hate coward? I hate that guy. Come on, you Philadelphia fans.
Starting point is 00:09:00 Admit it, you don't like me. Some of you Eagle fans have churned, you like me a little. But you sixer fans don't like me, but last night you sat there watching on your black and white TV in Philadelphia, and you're like, a coward's right. We're better when Simmons is the star in Embed sitting. So I said yesterday, last night is what the Philadelphia 76ers should look like going forward. Ben Simmons has got the ball, no center clogging up the middle,
Starting point is 00:09:25 and a bunch of JJ Reddicks and Butler's and Tobias Harrison. on the outside. That is the future. Joel Embed not playing showed you what it should look like. You cannot have two guys in the NBA on your roster that can't shoot threes. So you better pick one, Simmons, who can at least get the ball to guys who can shoot threes. Get it to Reddick, get it to Butler, get it to buy his, Tobias Harris. Okay. Oklahoma City had the same situation where Hardin and Westbrook, they had to make a choice. And Westbrook at the time was slightly more devised.
Starting point is 00:09:58 developed in his game than Hardin was with his. And they chose Westbrook. But they didn't watch where the NBA was going, and it was going in Hardin's direction, not Westbrook. And they didn't have the vision. And so they chose the more developed player in the moment. And this morning, Embedd is more complete in his game than Simmons is in his. Simmons is still evolving.
Starting point is 00:10:23 Embedd, this is the product. And Embed's product, today is better than Simmons. But basketball isn't just about what it used to be and what it is. It's about where it's going. And it's going to Simmons. Number one, I'm not into Biggs. It used to be. My favorite player was Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for years.
Starting point is 00:10:39 But I'm not into Carl Anthony and Anthony Davis and Embed. I mean, I think they're great players. Show me them leading their franchises to playoff wins. Because that's all this sport's about. It's about the whole season. Number two is I'm not into Biggs who get hurt. Anthony Davis hurt a lot. Mbid is still missed more games than he's played for.
Starting point is 00:10:56 the Sixers. I'm not making that up. By the way, out last night. Last year, Miami, out two games. He's heard a lot. B, C, excuse me, you could get a ton for Joel M. Bede on the market. Of course you go. He's a great player. He walks into an arena. He's 27 points and 12 rebounds. He's fun. He's social. He can be dominating. There's got to be a team in this league that doesn't have shooters or bigs and they got some assets and draft picks and they want to have a dominant player. M.B's an All-Star. One of the 10, 12 best players in America right now. He's got value. Don't tell me they don't have value.
Starting point is 00:11:29 Anthony Davis has value. A big who gets hurt and doesn't have a lot of playoff resume stuff. But be very careful. Basketball is changing. We have a renaissance going on. Houston Golden State is the way to do it. Philadelphia. Colin, why do you have to get rid of either of them?
Starting point is 00:11:48 Have you watched the Sixers this year? Second best roster in the NBA to Philadelphia. And there are a number three seat in the east? They'd be a number six. seven seed in the West. The second best roster in the NBA. Warriors, Philadelphia, Houston. And, you know, then you can argue, Milwaukee, Boston.
Starting point is 00:12:05 So the bottom line, Embed who's already been hurt, before he gets hurt big, this is what you should look like. Get Simmons the ball. If you have a big with Simmons, it'll clog up the lane. And he's going to score 90% of his points in his career at the basket. He's a 6.10.5 point. Outside of magic, I've never seen anybody who even live. looks like Ben Simmons at point.
Starting point is 00:12:29 And he's going to give you last night, 31 points. He's going to give you 24 a night at the rim. And Embed can give you 27 at the rim, but Embedde can't get it to shooters and control the tempo like Ben Simmons. And I like Embedit. Yesterday I unveiled my 12 best basketball players in the NBA. I had him beat at like six. He is more refined today than Ben Simmons.
Starting point is 00:12:51 He is. And Westbrook and Hardin, back when they had to make a decision, Westbrook was a more complete player at that moment that Harden who is still developing. But don't get caught up in the moment. This is why there's great stock pickers in America on Wall Street. Not just the stock price today. What's it going to be in six years? The Sixers last night, that's what they should look like.
Starting point is 00:13:14 Give me Redic on one wing. Give me Tobias on another. Give me Butler on another. You trade MB to get another shooter somewhere, maybe a draft pick. Go draft next year. The best shooter you can find. but that's the NBA tomorrow. Today, it looks more like M. B'd.
Starting point is 00:13:29 Every year less and less like that and more like Simmons. Good stuff. By the way, it was kind of ironic. In Brooklyn, they were teasing Ben Simmons. They had these missing posters on like polls in Brooklyn. Ben Simmons jumpers missing. Yeah, who was missing? M.B. didn't play.
Starting point is 00:13:50 Simmons was great. Best guy on the floor. All right, coming up next, NFL draft is less less than a week away. And the two quarterbacks that everybody was talking about, is Kyler Murray, very dynamic kid for Oklahoma, and Dwayne Haskins, less athletically dynamic, but a big strong, it looks like a quarterback in the NFL, right?
Starting point is 00:14:08 6-3, big arm, 70% completions, won a lot of games, very good against Michigan, Washington, the best defenses he faced. What to do, though? The stories out there, he's dropping, and people just don't know. Well, I'm going to go to his college coach, Urban Meyer. He's going to join me next. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports Radio, FS1, and the IHeart Radio app.

And in recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience in the mental health field and conversations with so many incredible guests. I'm talking, Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing,
Starting point is 00:15:45 we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth, or are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro.
Starting point is 00:16:07 Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Kear Gaines, as we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast, learn the hard way. Open your free, our heart radio app.
Starting point is 00:16:23 Search learn the hard way and listen now. Jacob Kingston grew up in an isolated polygamous sect. We were God's chosen kingdom on earth. He felt destined for greatness. So when a swaggering Armenian businessman catapults Jacob into an extraordinary world, he doesn't look back. Ferraris and Lamborghinis, private jets, meeting the president of Turkey.
Starting point is 00:16:48 I'm Michelle McPhee, and this is one of the most shocking criminal conspiracies I've ever come across. When Jacob met Levan this went to a billion dollar fraud. But with two kings from entirely different worlds, just how long can their empire survive? The largest tax investigation in American history. You need to tell me what you know. Is somebody coming after me?
Starting point is 00:17:13 Jacob told Levan, you're ruining my life. Listen to Kingdom of Fraud on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you. you get your podcast. Life throws hurdles big and small. The question is, how do you conquer them? On hurdle with Emily Abadi, we sit down with the most inspiring women in sports and wellness, professional athletes, coaches, and Olympic champions to talk about the challenges that shaped them
Starting point is 00:17:41 and the mindset that keeps them going. From the WNBA standout Kate Martin and rising hockey star Layla Edwards. If a boy can do it, I don't see why a girl can't. Like, I've never understood that. Like, it didn't make sense in my brain. It's hard to be in spaces that no one looks like. you, but don't ever feel like you don't belong. Don't let that be the reason you don't do it. An Olympic champs Gabby Thomas and Katie Ladecki.
Starting point is 00:18:03 The ability to show a gold medal to someone and have their face light up and smile, that means the world to me. And that's what motivates me to win more gold medals. At our level, at this scale, like being able to fail in front of the entire world, like, I can do anything. I can do anything. Because resilience isn't just about winning. It's about showing up, even when it's hard. Listen to Hurtle with Emily Abadi on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Presented by Capital One, founding partner of IHart Women's Sports.
Starting point is 00:18:36 It's my pleasure. A guy I've known for a long, long time. Urban Meyer, three national championships. I think one of the most remarkable things about Urban Meyer, who's now part of the new Fox College football show, 15 bowl games, 12 and 3. In fact, your teams in 15 bowl games, you had one really bad bowl game,
Starting point is 00:18:51 and I remember afterwards you were at Florida, You said, I didn't like this team. This team drove me crazy. Remember that team that had a bunch of NFL guys and it drove you nuts? I think it was 2007. Exactly it was. Yeah. Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:19:02 So you're one of the great bowl game coaches, turned around two programs. By the way, folks played college football at Cincinnati. He was a defensive back and he would hit you. I know all about Urban Meyer. Okay. Now let's get the stuff that I'm fascinated with. Dwayne Haskins. Okay, I said the New York Giants have the number six picks.
Starting point is 00:19:19 So I watched him in Ohio State. He's a perfect pocket guy. He moves. I don't love his accuracy. But here's my problem. You had so many good receivers at Ohio State this year that so many of his yards, a lot of drag.
Starting point is 00:19:35 You get Paris Campbell the ball, boom, he's gone. How much is Duane and how much are the receivers? I don't remember you having this many good, speedy receivers. How much credit does he get? And how much was your offense in the receivers, coach? I think that's a great analysis. I think that we've had, you go Alex Smith to Chris Leak to Tim Tebow to Cardo Jones, J.T. Barrett, Braxton Miller, was in there. He's by far the most accurate guy. I put him a lot with the same with Alex Smith that we had.
Starting point is 00:20:06 But the job of a quarterback is utilized his personnel, and that's what he did. We had very good receivers. And the other thing is accuracy is number one. Number two is his football IQ is outstanding. Ryan Day did a great job with him. But he never really got hit. and he had the great you know he has great peasants to understand
Starting point is 00:20:24 which way to flip the protection and that's going to be I think that's one of the most overlooked things for quarterbacks what's his football IQ because when you see him not get hit you say well the offense line is great wait a minute a lot of times they're flipping protections to make sure they're picking up the pressures and that's what other than accuracy that's drawing strength okay when he moves his
Starting point is 00:20:42 accuracy dip should I be concerned his movement is just okay he's not but I saw his body the other day and when he was training he's still young. He has one year under his belt playing. He's grown up into his body, and that's a concern, but not that big concern. Is he mature enough to be the face of a $5 billion
Starting point is 00:20:58 franchise? Not yet. He's close, though. He's only got one year under his belt, and I think the situation will be perfect, and there's a couple of them out there. He comes in, he learns for a year. At some point, he'll be the face of a franchise. Okay, because the Giants are $6 billion franchise eventually, and there's a lot of heat in New York. You put him behind Eli,
Starting point is 00:21:14 show him how to be a pro? That worked for you? A lot of conversation about that, and without studying in a great detail. I think that's ideal. Okay. Now I want to talk about Nick Bosa. So when Joey came out years ago, I said this on the air. I said he's either going to be great or a bust because I watched him. He took a bunch of plays off. And I said, I like my edge rusher. Sometimes I'll give a 330-pound defensive tackle some plays off. A lot of body weight. I look at Nick. And it's just how, what my eyes tell me, there's a little little brother I like in him. He's feistyer.
Starting point is 00:21:46 and when your brother's great, you want to prove you're as good as your brother. I actually like this Bosa, and the other one's great, more than the other one. There's something about his motor. Okay, so what am I seeing, explain because you had both? Well, it's a great family lineage, too. His father was a first-round draft pick out of Boston College.
Starting point is 00:22:07 His mother's brother was Eric Cumro. And so that's another first-round draft pick. Nick Bosa is as good a football player, He's a tough cat. He's a 3.3 GPA guy. He does everything right. When he went down, it took us two months to get over that. That's how good of a player is.
Starting point is 00:22:24 I don't know if there's a Kent miss, but if I'm a general manager in the NFL, I don't know how you let that one go. That's how good a player he is. Really? He's that good. You have to double him. Khalil Mackish.
Starting point is 00:22:35 Yeah, you have to chip him, double them. You have to slide to him. There's different ways that people are going to try it. But his four to six, well, we call four to six A to B, his relentless pursuit of a quarterback and effort is as good as I don't see him take plays off. No, he's an animal. He's an animal. And he just trains like an animal too. He's the entire package.
Starting point is 00:22:54 Okay, I want to go to the number one pick, Kyler Murray. So when I think of you, Urban, I actually think of offense and I think of quarterbacks. People forget how good Chris Leak was because Tebow was so dynamic and so, you know, he was just, Tim Tebow was college football for about three years. People forget Chris Leak was unbelievable. A tremendous player, very cerebral. But he didn't have the size for the NFL. So you've had a lot of different quarterbacks. You know, at runners, Alex Smith can run.
Starting point is 00:23:21 Like straight line speed big time. So I look at Kyler Murray and I'm like, okay, it looks small to me. I know he put on 10 pounds here. It looks like he plays at 188. I draft Bosa as a zero doubt, size speed. When you look, as a guy who knows quarterbacks, can't I say it looks like he plays at 188? Kyler looks small to me.
Starting point is 00:23:42 I think the Russell Wilson has given every small quarterback a glimmer of hope because you'd think logically to put a 5 foot 10, 5 foot 11, how we're a big, Kyleor is behind these giant human beings. That doesn't make sense. But the coach did a great job, getting him out of the pocket, creating throwing lanes for him. And he's arguably, you know, we had Braxton Miller. He looks to me like a Braxton Miller back there. I mean, a guy that can extend plays, elite, elite athlete,
Starting point is 00:24:11 and obviously has an elite arm. Here's a question. He has one-year body work. Those are the two top quarterbacks in the NFL draft right now. They played one year of football. And you're talking about quarterback experts or, you know, the guy, usually it takes four to five years to learn how to play that position. Those would be my concerns about our guy, Dwayne and Kyler.
Starting point is 00:24:31 I mean, they have one year. If you ran an NFL franchise and you're a college guy and that's what you love. And I think it works. You and Nick Sabin, I think your personalities work for college. You're both great recruiters and personnel guys. not that you couldn't work at the next level but if you did run an NFL franchise today would you take the bigger Dwayne
Starting point is 00:24:51 the athletic guy I think I would sit in that room and I'd struggle with the size maybe I couldn't get over it because everybody says Russell Wilson coach Russell's one of the best players I've ever seen play the game that's that's not fair I'm not saying you said everybody's saying Russell Wilson I'm like does everybody get Russell Wilson's a first belt hall famer
Starting point is 00:25:09 could you take Kyler number one I could would I take him head of Dwayne? I'm not sure. You said the same thing about Russell Wilson. I'll say the same thing about Tom Brady and Peyton Manning. That's so hard to be the guy that can't get out of trouble. And I look at Peyton Manning and I look at Tom Brady. I mean, I've coached that position forever, been around,
Starting point is 00:25:29 stand right behind him in practice. That's why it's so hard to find the pure classic dropback quarterback that's exceptional. I think if I'm a guy, if I'm a general manager, you have to have a quarterback can get out of trouble. I believe Duane can do that. He's not going to be the Kyler Murray and he's not going to be Russell Wilson, but he's good enough to get yourself out of trouble.
Starting point is 00:25:50 And that's a huge part of playing quarterback. So, Bowling Green, you turned around immediately. Utah, you turned around immediately. Florida, you turned around immediately. Ohio State, you turned around immediately. Bill Parcells is the only person in the history of football that I can compare you to. Takes Nick a while.
Starting point is 00:26:10 It took Belichick a while. It didn't take you a while. It didn't take parcels. What's the secret sauce into quick turnarounds? Because if you're a Miami, if you're a Jet Coach and Adam Gase, you're looking for a quick turnaround. Like, what is your secret sauce on that? I appreciate those kind words.
Starting point is 00:26:25 And I think I talked to a lot of young coaches about this. I think it's this. I think it's not secret sauce. It's when you see a coach takeover program, a lot of times you'll hear the media, and you'll hear sometimes coaches say, wait till I get my guys in here. The minute you say I'm the coach, they're your guys.
Starting point is 00:26:41 You better love them. You better grind them. And you better embrace their talents and not say, wait till I get my own guys in her. That drives me insane when I hear that. So we go to Bowling Green. They're great players there. You never take a shot at the previous coach.
Starting point is 00:26:54 You don't do that. You embrace it. You love these guys up. They're your family now. And I just think that's, you look at, we took over from at Bowling Green from great coach, Gary Blackney, took over for Ron McBride at Utah. He was terrific.
Starting point is 00:27:06 Ron Zuck, great coach. And he's Jim Trestle and Luke Fickle, great coaches. So we would never would go back. backwards and say, well, you know, don't worry about that. They're your players. Love them up. Create that team. They are your guys. And I used to hear the media say, well, he did he gives his own guys in there. These are our guys. The minute you sign on as head coach, they're your players.
Starting point is 00:27:24 So the NFL draft is interesting because, you know, you do this. You see a high school kid and he dominates physically. And then you get him to Ohio State. And some guys, they just don't love football. And then DeBosas, they love football. recruited a lot of five-star guys and they play like three-star guys. And you've taken, I could name guys, you've taken who are three-star guys and play like five-star guys. So you're sitting there if when Belichick calls you and Bill's going to, Bill's called you
Starting point is 00:27:53 a hundred times. And like how much of football, obviously there's a, there's a sized thing that matters. But when you and you and Belichick, as much as you could tell me, have a conversation, it seems like a lot of times Bill doesn't get caught up solely in that, that Bill has built an NFL dynasty that's double the length of the Niners, triple the lengths of Jimmy Johnson. It's unheard of. A conversation with Bill, what moves Bill on players? The same thing that moves me, and I think the people that do the research on players,
Starting point is 00:28:26 Bill Belichick's one of the few head coaches that comes and spends time with our staff. He wants to know, because he has the measurals, 40-yard dash, vertical jump, height weight, 225 bench press test. To him, that's called measurables, in measurables. Here's the question I have when I recruit. let me see him in the rivalry game. On fourth down, why is that coach not running behind that right tackle if he's your best player? On fourth down or the big situations of the game, why is he not showing up?
Starting point is 00:28:52 I don't want to see the highlight tapes of him against an inferior opponent where he's running touchdowns and sacking quarterbacks. That means no difference. So to me, it's the competitive spirit in the hardest situations. And we said, when I needed to do the most, did you give us your very best? That's what makes, that's what makes Bosa Bosa now. he's going to play his best in the best games. And when we go out recruit, the mistakes we made or when we say he's got the talent,
Starting point is 00:29:16 but he just doesn't show up in the big game, I fight that big time. And I know Coach Belichick and the elite coaches, to me, they're the ones always asking me those questions. What's he like against our rival? What's he like on fourth down? Is he the guy that you're going to run behind? Is he the guy that you're going to give the ball to?
Starting point is 00:29:32 Those are the guys that have the competitive heart to be champions. Rich McKay told me years ago, you know, Rich, Atlanta Falcons, he used to run the Buccaneers. He said, I love watching Saturday night SEC games. Who stars? That's 100,000 people. You're 19 years old.
Starting point is 00:29:47 He goes, if you can star in that environment at 19, at 24, you can star for us against the Saints on Monday Night Football. To your point, big games, big moments, who stars in the SEC on a Saturday night? Competitive spirit. That's the difference between. It's not tall, short, fast, slow. It's competitive spirit.
Starting point is 00:30:04 Every coach whiffs on somebody. What's the recruit you're proudest of in your life? you found a guy, he was ignored, and it was I told you so. Oh, man, you put me on the spot there. That's what I do. It's a journalist dude, coach. Well, I think J.T. Barrett would be the guy that was not a highly recruited guy. I'm not claiming I found him because actually Tom Herman found him, but brought him to me, brought him to me.
Starting point is 00:30:28 And here he goes down to one of the greatest quarterbacks ever to play at Ohio State. Talk about a big game quarterback. Oh, yeah. And, you know, my Fox College football team analyst, they were giving me a hard time. I said a third down in one, we knew what you were going to do. And you're like, you're damn right because he couldn't stop it. JT. Bear for a first down. All right, here we go.
Starting point is 00:30:46 Let's bring out the new crew, Fox, college football Saturday afternoon show. Rob Stone, Reggie Bush, Brady Quinn, Matt Liner. Let's bring him out. Rob Stone, you have your hands full dealing with these guys. You have to deal with the line. It's 31. 31. I know just to hand it to Urban. Just keep.
Starting point is 00:31:04 You know, feed the machine. So college football, this is our new crew. of all the guys here, and I think I've known all of you, Brady's probably the guy I haven't known. You're very outspoken, and that's what I love about, no, the guy I haven't spent the time with. You know us Notre Dame guys. We fire shots, right? You gotta watch out.
Starting point is 00:31:20 So let me ask you about, I want to ask you a draft question. So you have all these quarterbacks out here. Now last year, I thought, boy, these are a bunch of A's or potential A's. This year I look at them, I say, they could be good, but they feel like they all need to be developed. If I said Brady to you, what quarterback, you've got the number one pick or a top pick. Who pops for you?
Starting point is 00:31:41 Dwayne Haskins for me. I mean, it's not because coach is sitting right there. We tend to agree upon it. I got a chance to break him down a number of times this past year. And I think one of the things you saw throughout his game is he has a strong understanding of where the weaknesses are in the defense, what they're asking him to do, how to execute it, but also how he can exploit what the defense is trying to take away.
Starting point is 00:32:01 So I looked at his game the way he throws the football. He can make every throw. He's accurate. And I think the one thing that I even noticed a little bit, and coach, correct me if I'm wrong, you know, we saw him earlier in the year and we saw him later in the year. Better player.
Starting point is 00:32:13 Well, not only even a better player, you saw him grow as far as a leader and just the way he talked to you. He had more confidence. He had a little bit more bravado, if you will, as far as how he handled things. So that kind of came off to me as, yeah, he's only got one year of starting,
Starting point is 00:32:26 but he's going to be able to grow and to continue to progress. And I think what they asked him to do at Ohio State's can be very similar in the NFL. Okay, now, Matt, it's interesting because I struggled evaluating you out of college. I've joked to this, much like an Ohio state at USC, when you've got NFL guys up front, you don't face duress a lot.
Starting point is 00:32:43 When you have at Paris Campbell or you have a Steve Smith at USC, do you worry about two and next year or Duane this year that you don't, you don't, you got better players around you. USC, you go to the NFL and you don't. Do you worry about that
Starting point is 00:32:59 with Haskins? No, I don't. I think you know, like coach says, and he would know this better than any of us, any of us, but Dwayne was really good at getting the ball out fast and understanding, like Brady said, understanding where defenses are trying to do to you offensively, where you're trying to exploit an offense, and the smart quarterbacks, even if they're not the most mobile, or even if they have a great offense line, they understand where the ball needs to go and they understand where it needs to go quickly. And, you know, for me, obviously, I played behind a great offense line, one of the best. I've had great players around me. And then when you do transition
Starting point is 00:33:29 to the NFL. One of my, I think, positive my game was I was smart. I knew where the Blitz was coming. I knew where to get the ball out. So with Dwayne, I do think there's a small sample size. There's a one-year sample size, but the sky is a limit for this kid. And I think if he goes to a place where he can sit and understand, he's a big kid. I mean, he's a big kid. And I think if he can sit for a year or two and understand and get used to the speed of the NFL game, that's another thing, the speed and the size, he's got a chance to be a star. at the bed. You want to say something. I can see you. I'm just looking at these two beautiful quarterbacks and then Rob right between. Here's what I... There's a two-way... No, I need this table. I need this table. Yeah. That's the way the world should be. We have we have Hyzman, Heism.
Starting point is 00:34:16 By the way, I don't think this table was made for me. I've known Robbys. I've known Robbie for about 25 years, a soccer player. We used to work in Tampa together. Poor Reggie, you're a running back. If this interview was 15 years ago, I wouldn't even care about these guys. What's it like to hang around quarterbacks, and it's all guys like me talk about now? I'm enjoying it.
Starting point is 00:34:38 Obviously, me and Matt have a great relationship. We go back a long time and just getting to know Brady, Rob, coach. I'm looking forward to it. I'm looking forward to building the chemistry. We've already been taking little cheap shots at each other, having fun, and that's really what it's all about, is recreating that chemistry on TV and allowing people to see just the authentic and genuine side of us. Great stuff.
Starting point is 00:34:59 Congrats to all of you. Coach, it's great to have yelling team. Reggie, Matt, Rob, and Brady Quinn. Congratulations to all of it. Thanks, Colin. Thanks, Colin. All right, let's go to John Goulet with Herdline News. No, no, no, no.
Starting point is 00:35:13 Turn on the news. This is the Hurdline News. I have to follow that. That's not fair. Yeah, I know. I have to follow two Heismans and a national championship head coach, and this is terrible. Okay. For a couple of years now, we've kind of been waiting for the Giants to,
Starting point is 00:35:29 replace Eli Manning. Yeah. But apparently their GM, Dave Gettelman, doesn't feel he needs to be replaced. Take a listen. We went into last season, believing that Eli still had plenty left, and he proved he did. We won two more games than we did, than the team did
Starting point is 00:35:45 the year before. And you had all those games, you know, that we lost by a point, two points. I mean, you know, we lost eight games by a touchdown or less. The NFL is tight, tight, tight. and a few more plays get you over the top and now you're winning more.
Starting point is 00:36:01 Is this kind of a smoke stream, do you think? Or is he really going to stick with Eli? Well, whenever I hear people say, you know, we lost seven games by one possession. The NFL is a one possession league. So the average score in the NFL is like 2420. So everybody that's losing is losing by one possession. You'll have one or two teams a year that get bludgeoned. But, you know, by and, you know, by and,
Starting point is 00:36:26 large, saying you lose by eight times by one possession means you don't have a player at the quarterback who can win eight times by one possession. Well, 16 games every weekend. How many, the line is over its touchdown? How many of them? Two? Maybe. Generally one. So as you know, Patriots tight end, Rob Gruncowski has retired from the NFL, but apparently
Starting point is 00:36:44 he will never retire from smashing footballs. Take a listen to the video the Patriots put out about their visit to Fenway with the Lombardi trophy. 11 throws the ball We see 87 Go from a batting position to a bun If anybody could do it And get away with it
Starting point is 00:37:11 It would be Mr. Grankowski himself The people will never forget That he was a part of that championship team The trophy is special Not damaged Now it has become vintage Is what I'll say
Starting point is 00:37:25 So for our radio audience he bunted a baseball thrown at him with the Lombardi trophy. And now it's got a big dent in it. I would argue probably the perfect way for Gronk to end his career, right? Yeah. I mean, he's famous for the Gronk spike, and so he just dens the Lombardi trophy. And finally, according to Adrian Wosnerowski, the Lakers GM, Rob Polinka, is meeting with former Cavs head coach Tyron Liu today in Orange County, I believe, about their vacant head coach
Starting point is 00:38:01 position. As you have previously reported, since you are a Big J. Journalist, they have also met with 76ers assistant head coach Monty Williams and would prefer to offer him the job, but obviously he is still coaching and there's the possibility the 76ers job becomes available. Do you think the Lakers will have the patience to wait for Monty Williams or are they going to panic and just hire Tyrone Luke because he's available right now? Well, I don't know if they'll panic. I think Monty Williams is going to take the Sixers job because I think the Sixers... But it might not be open.
Starting point is 00:38:33 Yeah, well, it's currently constructed. I don't think the Sixers could beat Boston, Milwaukee, and I have my questions about Toronto. So I think Ty Lou is going to end up coaching the Lakers. My first choice, nothing against Ty would be Monty Williams. I don't like the idea for free agents that we are... You know, we are... We are LeBron's team, and it's nothing against Rich Paul Clutch Sports,
Starting point is 00:38:56 but I think the optics, you've got a narrative out there like that, and you add the component of the narrative and the optics to it, it's going to turn off guys like Kauai Leonard, and I think you need guys like Kauai Leonard. That's the news. Veteran newsman John Goulet. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by.

Starting point is 00:43:26 Presented by Capital One, founding partner of I Heart Women's Sports. This is remarkable. NFL draft is less than a week away next Thursday. Next week we're doing a lot of NFL draft, and it's one of my favorite things. I'm a draft nerd. By the way, good news. Talk to the Chargers yesterday. I've got tickets, two of them for the Andrew Luck at Chargers season opener. It's my Super Bowl.
Starting point is 00:43:47 Listen to this. According to Ian Rappaport, NFL reporter at Rapsheet, Raiders coach John Gruden and GM Mike Mayock sent their scouts home for the weekend and they're not expected to return by draft time. The belief is they don't know who to trust and wanted to clear the room. Excuse me? What? Are we sure this is not a fake Ian Rappaport tweet?
Starting point is 00:44:14 Well, is that his account? Okay. You tell me. I mean, this is crazy. First of all, the Raiders sort of got hosed with their schedule, so did Tampa Bay. The London games, basically Tampa Bay and Oakland have a six-week stretch in which they don't play. They play four times on the road. Then they go to London.
Starting point is 00:44:32 Oakland does. They already got hosed by their schedule. NFL admitted today it's not ideal for Tampa or Oakland, and Oakland doesn't play at home for about five, six weeks. And their division's really good. But that London thing's not going away because British Shocker is getting more popular in America and the NFL is getting more popular in Europe. billionaires are seizing market share in other countries. It's called globalization.
Starting point is 00:44:53 It's going nowhere. But the Raiders are just too much noise, all sorts of pots and pans, throwing on a hardwood floor. They've got, they just acquired the number one diva in the NFL, Antonio Brown. They got rid of a great player, Khalil Mack. That made last year noisy. They got rid of Amari Cooper to the Cowboys, so everybody talks about that move.
Starting point is 00:45:14 They hired John Gruden, who's the number one NFL analyst at a network. He's one of the more talkative head coaches. In fact, the two guys now running their organization are former TV analysts. They're moving to Vegas. They have three draft picks in the first round, which is great, but it's unheard of. They are just, they are built for hard knocks. Seriously, I think they'd be a better TV show than a football team. This is unbelievable.
Starting point is 00:45:38 Gruden and Mike Mayock sent their scouts home for the weekend. They're not expected to return by draft time. The belief is they don't know who to trust and wanted to clear the room. For the record, schedules came out yesterday, right? And I'm into that stuff or Wednesday night. Let's go over the Raiders schedule and play the win-loss game. Because last year I was out on the Raiders, got a lot of heat from people in Los Angeles, and I was right. I'm not much higher on him now, although I do think offensively they're going to be fun to watch.
Starting point is 00:46:06 And I did give Gruden credit because I thought the Raiders played pretty well late in the year when everybody could have quit on John Gruden. And the players did not quit on John Gruden, so he deserves credit. let's play the win-loss game. Open up with Denver at home. I'll give them a W. Denver and Denver early, and you don't want to play them,
Starting point is 00:46:20 but Denver on the road, W. Then their schedule gets brutal. Kansas City, they're going to get whacked. At Minnesota, at Indy, they're not winning those games. Minnesota is not great at quarterback. They're great everywhere else. You're not beating Andrew Luck in a dome. They go to London.
Starting point is 00:46:34 They'll get mauled by Chicago. They're not beating Aaron Rogers in Green Bay. So they're going to start the year 1 in 5. I'll give them an upset win. They'll be an underdog at Houston. mostly because I think they're upgrading their defense through the draft, and Houston's O-line is bad. I'll give them a W over Detroit.
Starting point is 00:46:50 What do you know, a two-game winning streak? But then they've got to face the Chargers loss. Cincinnati will win, despite what all you kids think, traveling 3,000 miles to play the Jets. That's not going to be good for them. That's a loss. Mahomes loss. Tennessee is going to be a borderline playoff team.
Starting point is 00:47:06 That's a loss. They'll beat Jacksonville, lose to the Chargers. Denver late in the year, it's snowing sideways. But I'll give them a W. I have them sweeping the Denver Broncos. I don't think they have better players necessarily, but I'll give you a sweep over Denver, and I know what you're all saying.
Starting point is 00:47:20 Colin, you don't have a clue. That's six wins, six and ten. You know what Vegas has them at? Six and a half. I'm not that far off. That's what the season looks like. They're going to be noisy. They're going to be fun.
Starting point is 00:47:33 They're built for hard knocks, but this story today is another reason. I can't buy the Raiders. It's just a mess. You just don't want to be loud. This year the Steelers got loud. They got noisy underachieved. Green Bay this year, McCarthy Rogers, they got noisy.
Starting point is 00:47:50 Here's who didn't make any noise. I didn't hear much out of Indy, made the playoffs. New England won the team. Rams didn't hear anything. Didn't hear much for the Chargers. I'm hearing a ton from the Raiders. I'm hearing a lot from Cleveland. Noise is not good in this league.
Starting point is 00:48:05 Seattle was good, and then they got noisy. And last year, you know what? Seattle got quiet. And Seattle got better. this league is not about making noise. NBA is a soap opera. I mean, I think the NBA playoffs and the soap opera is better than the regular season. I don't mind a little noise in the NBA. I never have because I think the great players like Kyrie and Durant,
Starting point is 00:48:28 what did I say going into the NBA playoffs? I said, listen, Kyrie a lot of noise, Kevin Durant, a lot of noise. Stars shut it down in the playoffs, historically in the NBA. I'm not bothered that LeBron would make noise in the regular season, Durant, Kyrie, they're all fine. NFL noises losses. And Cleveland's making a lot of noise, and Oakland's making a lot of noise. And last year,
Starting point is 00:48:53 the quiet teams, even though they had stars, the Rams were quiet, the Patriots were quiet. Seattle got quiet. Philadelphia had a lot of stars. Yeah, pretty quiet. Man, what a mess. They sent the Scout homes. That'd be like having a movie and sending your cinematographer, your producer, and your camera guys
Starting point is 00:49:14 home right before the movie starts. Apparently, the way it makes it sound, they're not even going to be around for the draft. Are they going to be in the war room? They don't know who to trust. Ian Rappaport. Gruden and Mike Mack sent the scouts home for the weekend, not expected to return by draft time. They don't know who to trust and want it to clear the room. I've never seen a story like that.
Starting point is 00:49:37 Yeah. I mean, my opinion is, oh, I've never seen that before. Jeez, they are just making a ton of noise. All right. We have a great next hour. Mark Medina Chris Haines stopped by New information equals new opinion on the Chicago Bears
Starting point is 00:49:53 and I got to tell you I'm starting to really like Josh Rosen of Arizona The Herd. One more Herd? The Herd streams 24 hours a day seven days a week within the IHeart Radio app Search Herd to listen live or on demand whenever you'd like. Hour 2 in L.A. and a Friday.

John Goulet, a veteran newsman of many great esteemed newspapers through the years. He worked at the New Canaan Post-Sacramento B. Gazette something. It's great to have you, veteran newsman John Goulet. Draft is next Thursday. I can't wait. I got to tell you, I don't know how I would have handled this season. situation, but I am blown away by how Josh Rosen is handling it. Imagine getting a job.
Starting point is 00:50:58 And then the organization doesn't really know what it's doing. They have a head coach. They fire him. They have an offensive coordinator. They fire him. You're saddled with all that nonsense. They do a hype video yesterday. The Arizona Cardinals, don't put Josh Rosen in it.
Starting point is 00:51:12 We hammered them for it. They were listening. I have had that verified. And an hour later, they changed the hype video to put Josh Rosen in it. Josh Rosen has been dealing with crap for a year in Arizona. Nothing but garbage. They got the fourth best roster in their division. One of the bottom five rosters in the NFL.
Starting point is 00:51:29 They can't get the head coach right. They can't get the coordinators right. And now there's been this eight-week love fest with Kyler Murray, the five, you know, nine quarterback, five-ten quarterback at Oklahoma. And the whole time Josh Rosen hadn't said a word. Well, yesterday he was quoted. He came out. He was talking about with some friends.
Starting point is 00:51:49 him around. And I think the kid is really handling it like a pro. I definitely understand the situation. I mean, it's annoying, but like it is what it is. Football is a business. And I definitely respect the higher-ups and their decisions. I think the season probably went as poorly as it could possibly go. But within that, had an unbelievable time. We won three games. And each one of those wins, to me, it felt like I won the Super Bowl. I got to tell you, poise under noise is a big thing. for me. I like Josh Rosen more and more. I like him more and more. I think of him, Arizona. I keep him. I take Nick Bosa. I get the best football player in the draft. The two best football players
Starting point is 00:52:30 are Quinn and Williams from Alabama and Nick Bosa at Ohio State. Those are the two best players. All my scouts are like, those are the two best players. Nick Bosa may end up going two if Arizona goes with the quarterback. Today, I'm about getting better. I draft. I draft Nick Bosa, for 10 years, I have an elite pass rusher. The pass rusher outside of the quarterback is about the most important position in football. Get a quarterback. Get a guy who can get their quarterback. But I'm Josh Rosen handled this way better than I would have.
Starting point is 00:53:02 If you brought me to Fox Sports, and within a year, they were talking about replacing me, and I'm supposed to sit there for 12 weeks and not say a word, I'm not sure how I'd handle it, and I'm in my 50s. This kid's in his early 20s. So I'm on Team Rosen now. I understand the concerns about his health. That's always been to my number one issue. He was a little brittle at Arizona, excuse me, at UCLA,
Starting point is 00:53:26 and Arizona got a bad old line. That worries me. I mean, that worries me. If I was Arizona and I could trade down and get offensive linemen, I would. But they got the number one pick. Go get the best player available at that spot. Get Nick Bosa. I think the kid's handling it way better than I would have.
Starting point is 00:53:42 Not a peep. I mean, yesterday they released a hype video. They don't put him in it. They have 15 quarterbacks. get pictured, he's now one of them. Is it look maybe like they don't know what they're doing in Arizona sometimes? Coach can't get it right. Coordinator couldn't get it right.
Starting point is 00:53:56 Hype video can't get it right. Fourth best roster in the division can't get it right. Rosen, I'm starting to think he deserves a better organization. All right, let me shift to this. I have a rule in life. new information equals new opinion. I know what some of you say. Colin, he is a flip-flopper.
Starting point is 00:54:23 Well, no, I get new information and I change my opinion. I mean, if Tom Brady went down, broke his leg tomorrow, I have a new opinion on New England. That's the way stockbrokers work, pilots work. Smart people in America change their opinion all the time because they get new information. Okay. dumb guys. Hey, I said this nine years ago. This is how I think. Well, there's new information.
Starting point is 00:54:48 I don't care. I'm a man of my word. You're a dumb man of your word. Change your opinion all the time if you get new information. So the schedules came out this week. I don't think a hard schedule takes a great team and makes them bad. I don't think an easy schedule takes an average team and makes them great. But can the schedule change your season? Yeah, it can be a game or two. Absolutely. You're a young team, a new head coach. You have a brutal opening month. You start one in three instead of three and one because the schedule's brutal. You're on the road. You're facing elite teams, quarterbacks. So the Chicago Bears are picked by everybody to win their division. I looked at their schedule. And this does not look like with Mitch Trubisky a schedule that's going to win the division. First of all, their second week, they're at Denver. Denver doesn't lose at home in Denver. They haven't for years. years, one of the toughest places to play in early September. They have a three-game, brutal stretch, middle of the season where they face Saints, Chargers, and at Philadelphia.
Starting point is 00:55:51 That is tough. And that's off the London game. So they come back to the States and they've got to go, Breeze, Phillip Rivers, Carson Wentz. Then at the end of the season, it's brutal. The last month, they faced the Cowboys at Aaron Rogers, Patrick Mahomes, and at Minnesota. Oh, by the way, squeezed in between those two at the L.A. Rams on the West Coast. Vegas only has their over under at nine and a half, and they went 12 and 4 last year. So Vegas is pulling back big time on Chicago.
Starting point is 00:56:22 So am I. I look at this schedule. I'm with Vegas on this. They lost their defensive coordinator. Vic Vangio's in Denver now. They face him week two. He knows that personnel. They lost starting safety.
Starting point is 00:56:36 I'm with Vegas on this. I think they're around a nine-win team from a 12-win team, a pullback team. Last year, by the way, I called the Vikings who went 13 wins. I called them a pullback team. I called Jacksonville a pullback team. They pulled back. I think the Bears pull back. They're in the 9-7 category.
Starting point is 00:56:51 Also, great defenses, by the way. If you have a great quarterback, your offense is usually good, like the Saints and like New England for 10, 10 straight years. Defenses are different. The Vikings Jags had great defenses. The next year they didn't. The 2016 Giants were 11 and 5 of the great defense. Next year they were 3 and 13. Defense is ebb and flow.
Starting point is 00:57:11 And let me go to another team where I think their schedule is beneficial. Green Bay. So Green Bay is in the same division. Most people see them as number two in the division. I think they win the division this year. And here's why. Look at Green Bay's schedule. They get Denver early in Green Bay.
Starting point is 00:57:29 They get tough Philadelphia early in Green Bay. They end the year when it's lousy outside. They have the best quarterback against Minnesota and Detroit, and they're both indoor games. in December. That's a big advantage. I get Aaron Rogers indoor last two games of the year in bad climates. Those could be nightmares if it's blowing sideways in Detroit and Minnesota and you played outdoors.
Starting point is 00:57:52 Also in their toughest part of the schedule, the middle of it, they have an at Kansas City, at Chargers, Carolina by at San Francisco. Well, the Chargers game is going to be a 70-30 Packer crowd at the Chargers Stadium. That's a home game. And then they get a buy before they have to go out west so that alleviates a lot of the, you know, problems with that. When I, Green Bay's five of their first seven games were at home with a new coach. Vegas has them at over under nine and a half.
Starting point is 00:58:18 I'll go over with Green Bay at 10. So I think the Bears schedule, Vegas has them nine and a half. I'll go nine. And I think Green Bay schedule, Vegas has them nine and a half. I think they go 10. I think that schedule takes away a game from the Bears and adds a game a win to the Packers. So I don't think a schedule is going to take a crappy team. You're not going to take, you know, Tampa Bay and make them New England.
Starting point is 00:58:44 And you're not going to take New England if they had a hard schedule and make them Arizona. But I think it can affect you. And I think the Bears are a little less of a team today because of that schedule. And I think the Packers are a little more of a team due to their schedule. Coming up next, Kevin Durant put on an absolute clinic last night. Warriors reporter Mark Medina. Medina is going to be showing up. Bay Area News Group Warriors reporter had Marcus Thompson yesterday.
Starting point is 00:59:14 Mark stops by. They are in Los Angeles. They look great. For the record, Oklahoma City favored by seven and a half tonight against Portland. Don't count out Oklahoma City. They've got better players than Portland. Just don't count out them to lose that series. Didn't you learn your lesson in game two?
Starting point is 00:59:30 I lost a couple dollars. Okay, but let me just say it again. Oklahoma City is not dead in this series. They're not. They're going to win tonight. Vegas has it at 7.5. This is a massive playoff number. So Vegas loves OKC tonight. Westbrook will play well tonight. That series is
Starting point is 00:59:50 not over. You're taking a minus 7 and a half? I'm not betting it. I learned my lesson. But I don't bury Oklahoma City. 66% of men lose their hair by the age of 35. Thing is when you start to notice hair loss, it's too late.

Listen to Hurtle with Emily Abadi on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Presented by Capital One, founding partner of IHeart Women's Sports. A friend of mine used to cover the Lakers, and in one year he's gone from the Lakers dysfunction to the Lakers dysfunction to the big difference. Warriors' writer the San Jose Mercury News, former Laker writer for the LA Daily News. It is interesting.
Starting point is 01:05:31 You go from dysfunction to highly functional. What's the first thing you noticed? What was the big difference? Well, the big difference beyond the fact that you have a losing franchise, a winning franchise, young players versus superstar talent is there is synergy within the front office and ownership. And it's amazing how much that makes a difference from top down because if you have the front offices support, you have that collaboration with the head coaching staff, the players feel that. They feel that everyone's on the same page. And it goes beyond the fact that they have star talent. They're able to develop some of their rotation players a lot more and there's more continuity
Starting point is 01:06:08 where the Lakers are in this really interesting situation where they have LeBron James. They're used to that institutional excellence with their championship passed. But there's always been this feeling of are they doing that of the detriment of building a culture and developing some of those young players? And hence, this is where they are. There's not really a clear direction on where they're headed. Yeah, I mean, Genie's made some bad hires. Magic was a bad hire.
Starting point is 01:06:33 Yeah, and the thing was when she made that hire, she was looking at what was happening before with Jim Bus and Mitch Cupcheck. She didn't like the fact that they're missing on free agents. She didn't like the fact that there were all these coaching changes. And look, Magic Johnson deserves credit for getting LeBron James. But when you're looking at some of the things in the previous front office, it's almost repeating some of the same mistakes. They just got rid of Luke Walton. And you can debate whether that's a good move or a bad move. But it shows a lack of continuity.
Starting point is 01:07:01 and then as far as how they're developing some of their young players, that was one of the things that was that Jeannie found as a criticism with the previous front office. It's the same thing here. So KD last night, I thought put on a real clinic. So Steve Kerr had come out after the last loss where Durant just didn't shoot the ball much with Patrick Beverly guarding him. And here's what Steve Kerr said after last night's game.
Starting point is 01:07:24 He said it yesterday. He's Kevin Durant. And so he showed everybody. who Kevin Durant is. He was remarkable last night. Yeah, without a doubt. And here's the thing that is interesting and that kind of got a little bit under Kevin's skin where Steve Kerr was saying, hey, I want Kevin to shoot 20 shots, 30 shots.
Starting point is 01:07:46 And he kind of clapped back a little bit and saying, I'm not just going to go out in a game and shoot 20 or 30 shots for the sake of it. But Steve Kerr's larger point was, I want you to be aggressive. Impose your will on the game. There is a fine line. you want to take what the defense gives you. But if you're someone of Kevin Durant's status with having such a scoring prowess, you don't have to always wait to see what the defense gives you.
Starting point is 01:08:10 You've got to impose your will. So it's not so much how many shots he's taking, how many times he's passing. It's really just about establishing his presence with his aggressiveness. So Kerr has to poke Kevin occasionally. Their relationships different. Yeah, it's very weird this season because whether it's that example or, the whole idea that Steve wants his team to play with joy or with having ball movement, Kevin seems to go out of his way to contradict a lot of those beliefs.
Starting point is 01:08:40 And you can look at that and see, as an example, that they're not on the same page yet. When I've talked to him, when others have talked to him about how he and Steve Kerr have been over these past few years, he's painted as something that's been very collaborative. They go out to lunch a lot. He and Bob Myers, the Warriors GM. So as much as there might be some subtle differences underneath the service and obvious differences below the surface, they have a ways of being able to figure those things out. And there you go. You have game three after game two where he had, I think, more turnovers than shot attempts.
Starting point is 01:09:14 I mean, there is an understanding Marcus Thompson here yesterday. I'll stand by this. I think going to New York's the wrong move. LeBron showed you going for business over basketball doesn't work. And I think, especially when you're in your prime, I could make an argument for LeBron doing it because he'd moved out of his prime. I still think Kevin's got a couple of prime years left. It certainly looked like it last night.
Starting point is 01:09:39 Marcus Thompson yesterday said, listen, I don't think Kevin Durant's got this thing all sewn up. I think he could be convinced either way. Do you believe that? Yeah, I don't think he hasn't sewn up either. I mean, there might be times during this season where he's looked elsewhere and thought in his mind he's going to go somewhere. There's been times, I'm sure, that he's thought the opposite.
Starting point is 01:09:58 I remember earlier in the season, he talked about the Warriors in such glowing terms for the obvious reasons with the winning, the two finals MVPs, the collaboration. But then there's times throughout the season where he's been disconnected. He's been a little bit moody. And so I think when you're talking to people around the Warriors, they're bracing for the worst that, hey, maybe he winds up leaving, but they're also preparing for that best case scenario because they know how fleeting it is. And at the end of the day, they've been winning. he could win his third straight championship, third finals MVP. They can offer him the most money. Kevin has been expanding his business portfolio,
Starting point is 01:10:36 particularly in the Silicon Valley. They're moving to San Francisco next season. So wouldn't you think Kevin wants to tap into that? Those are all possibilities, but I think also the Warriors are being realistic that there is this chance that he might leave. But they think it's going to be all up in the air until the season ends.
Starting point is 01:10:54 You are covering arguably the greatest basketball dinners. ever. People have covered the Patriots for 15 years or Alabama football. These dynasties don't happen. This is one of the great teams. Offensively, it's the best team I've ever seen. I still think the Bulls with MJ were a physical, a better defensive team. But if I had to say, give me in a sentence or two what it is like to cover an all-time great team. Well, I cover them, this is my second season. So I covered them kind of in the middle of it when they were used to winning championships. I think that euphoria that you saw at the beginning of this run,
Starting point is 01:11:29 it started to fade away a little bit because they're going through that grind of 82. They're expected to win. So it kind of reminded me when I first started covering the Lakers when they were defending a championship where they had all this top heavy talent. They're trying to battle that grind. They're trying to see how long this train can keep moving. And to your point, this could end fairly soon with Durant leaving
Starting point is 01:11:53 there's decisions they'll have to make on Draymond and free agency. But when I've talked to Joe Lacup and Bob Myers and Steve Kerr, you know, the past year or so, their worst case scenarios, if nothing else, can they at least be the San Antonio Spurs from the past generation where maybe they don't have this strong influx of talent every single year. But they're always in that conversation because they have someone like Steph Curry running everything and they can establish continuity with developing younger players. And that's why I think the Warriors have had that whole strength and numbers philosophy. Yes, it's easy to say, hey, they have four all-stars.
Starting point is 01:12:30 But they're very well aware that that could be fleeting. So how do you have plan B to pave themselves for, you know, the next wave? One of the things I really like about sports in America to now. It used to be brawn one, big tough guys. Golden State's smart. Patriots smart. If you look at the best tennis players, Federer is not the most physically gifted. He's one of the really smart.
Starting point is 01:12:54 I actually played tennis with a former Federer coach a couple days ago, just talking about his IQ, how expansive it is. Smart Red Sox, Dodgers, analytic guys, smarts winning. There's a lot of brain power in Golden State. And generally, smart people know they're smart. My only question about the Warriors going forward is the NBA gases up at stars. sometimes when you've got nine smart guys in a room, they wear each other out.
Starting point is 01:13:24 Yeah, without a doubt. And you also look at what teams are doing the rest of the NBA, where they've mimicked what the Warriors are doing. They were seen as this team that's spearheading and accelerating the use of the three-point shot. And now when you look at the numbers, there's a lot of other teams, most notably the Houston Rockets that are utilizing the three a lot more.
Starting point is 01:13:42 Yes. And what I think that leaves the Warriors in courage, though, is that when you're looking at Steph Curry, and Kevin Durant in particular, there's a real sense around the organization and around the week that their games will age well. Steph Curry is more than just a jump shooter,
Starting point is 01:13:59 but there's no way around it. His game is primarily on outside shooting. Ball handling and shooting. Yeah, so his body's not going to wear down as much. And then Kevin Durant, when you talk to people around the NBA, I remember talking to Kobe Bryant about this last year. He feels like there is no weakness in Kevin Durant's game where he has the perfect blend of having the post-up game,
Starting point is 01:14:19 game. He's utilized a three a lot more. He's a great passer, great facilitator. And it doesn't require him to use that much of a physical presence. He's listed at 6.9, but let's be real Colin. He looks like he's seven feet. So he can use that length. He has such great fundamental. So there's a feeling that at age 30 right now, he could still be the same player three, four, five years from now because he has that base. As opposed to LeBron, who's all about kind of using his brute force. I could make the argument that Kevin Durant is the most perfectly built offensive player in the history of the sport.
Starting point is 01:14:53 If I said to you, okay, what do you want? Size, he's 6-11. That's way bigger than Jordan or Kobe. Okay, but 6-11, he's also a very good ball handler. Okay, mid-range, excellent. Around the basket, excellent. Three-point, excellent. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:15:10 I mean, Kobe's right on this. Yeah. I mean, you're talking, I mean, the only knock on Durant is he's not physically, you know, he's not Zion. He's not going to roll over people. But when you're talking length, touch, size, athleticism, he's about as gifted as I've ever seen.
Starting point is 01:15:26 Yeah, and there's a very interesting trend going on these past few years with Kevin, where the NBA says you shouldn't be taking mid-range shots, but he is so good with that. Yeah, it works for him. And it works for him. And they leave him open at times. So he's thinking, well, why am I going to step back and take a contested three where I can just make these mid-range jumpers because they're like layups to him?
Starting point is 01:15:48 At the same time, though, unlike someone like maybe Carmelo Anthony, for example, Kevin's been able to adapt his game and add more of his three. She doesn't take as many as Stefan Clay do, obviously. But when he is open, he'll use that three ball. And if not, hey, he has an ultimate first world luxury where he can dish it off to Stefan Clay. Mark Medina, it's great seeing you again. Likewise. It's always a pleasure.
Starting point is 01:16:13 And it feels like it was yesterday. What, two weeks ago we got to check. It's like a home for you. It is like a home game for you. Yes. Mark, great seeing you, buddy. John Goulet with the news. No, no, no, no, no.
Starting point is 01:16:23 Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. Colin Michael Jordan has weighed in on Tiger Woods' comeback from injuries and personal issues to win the masters. He calls it the greatest he's ever seen. Quote, I took two years off to play baseball, but nothing like that. I'm pretty sure he questioned himself whether he could get it back. And he had to put a lot of work in, but he took it head on. He had to change his game.
Starting point is 01:16:47 he had to change his perspective a little bit, to me it was the greatest comeback I've ever seen. Oh, I totally agree with that. I said that people made fun of me. I said it. I'm like, folks, Tiger Woods had said two years ago. I don't know if I can play again. Tiger Woods said that.
Starting point is 01:17:02 Right. And also, Jordan does not praise other athletes easily. He doesn't like admitting anyone has done anything better than him, even in other sports. So that's not just like, oh, yeah, it was the great. It's like he really believes that if he says it. It's so funny, there was a Nike released a spot where guys like me and other people had strong opinions saying Tiger's not going to win again. And everybody's like, yeah, you shouldn't have said that.
Starting point is 01:17:25 Yeah, I said it because Tiger said it. Tiger's like, I can't be a President's Cup captain because I can't ride in a golf cart because it hurts too much. Tiger's like, I don't think there's a chance I'm never going to play. Tiger got caught with drugs in his system, pulled over by cops, didn't know what state he was in. It wasn't outrageous to say, I called him. I think he's mentally and physically I almost look at him like a former golfer. You were also happy to be wrong about it.
Starting point is 01:17:51 Oh, God, but there's no question. There's never been anything like this in my life. Nothing like this. Remember all year how Denver Nuggets fans would complain that you didn't give their team any attention? Yeah. And we all better watch out because this team was for real. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:18:08 Well, we are all watching now and we are not impressed. Yeah. The Nuggets lost to the Spurs last night, 118, 108, in San Antonio. They are now down 2 to 1. Their only win required a 19-point home comeback. Yeah. Are the second-seated nuggets.
Starting point is 01:18:24 Remember, this is a 2-7 matchup. They're done, right? Yeah. By the way, Oklahoma City that's got two stars is down 2-0, and they're not done. I still think Oklahoma City has a chance to win this series. Denver's done. NBA fan. Denver guy.
Starting point is 01:18:38 Let me tell you how it works. Toronto guy. Okay. You got to have more than one great player. to win in the post season. So Toronto is exactly what I thought. Denver's even more so what I thought. Work hard, deep, great.
Starting point is 01:18:53 You'll be totally exposed in the playoffs. Now Milwaukee has a second, very good player and a world-class coach in Boondholzer. So I do think Milwaukee's good enough to get to a conference final or perhaps a final. And finally, it's time to see who's going places sponsored by Toyota. Dwayne Haskins is going places, possibly to New York.
Starting point is 01:19:13 A lot of mock drafts. out there have him going to the Giants with the sixth pick, which is a spot he would be comfortable with. Eli Manning is a legend. I grew up watching Eli and I'll have no problems to sit back behind him and learning from him. That guy I did with J.P. at Ohio State, whatever team trashed me, I'll be able to sit back and learn from the guy that's there and not be able to compete with him at pushing. But know that a guy's there for he's a veteran. He's a lot of before he's professional. And I want to be in that guy's shoes one day, so I'm more than willing to learn from the great thing. Yeah, well, Urban Meyer said one hour ago, he said, I said, is he willing, is he ready to take over a $5 billion franchise? And Urban Meyer said he's close, meaning he's not ready to come into New York and start.
Starting point is 01:19:57 Listen, I think you give him a year in New York, and in one year he's ready to start. This could end up being perfect for him. Because I don't see him as a guy like a darn old, even a Baker. I said Baker could come in and play. Baker was old. He'd gone to college for four years. He'd bounced around, Rosen. Baker was in college for five years.
Starting point is 01:20:14 He played for three and a half. Haskins played for one season. Yeah, Haskins is good, but I don't think he's ready to play right now. And so I think New York's perfect. They're very reluctant to let go of Eli. They may keep Eli for two years. Aaron Rogers sat for three, and I'm okay with it. Veteran Newsman, John Goulay.
Starting point is 01:20:34 Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping back. The Hurd-Lie News. Can I just say something about fans? Here's my knock on sports radio and sports radio. fans. You never tell me anything with any courage. You don't want to get buried by the avalanche, so you ride the avalanche. You pile on.
Starting point is 01:20:52 You never go and say, even though this guy was fired, I love him. And if you look at the history of sports, fans, everything is about being right. So they jump on Twitter and jump on social media and say Captain Safe Take things like, hey, Pete Carroll's a good coach. Really? No kidding. Bill Belichick's the man. John Calapari can recruit. Ooh, fascinating.
Starting point is 01:21:16 Bryce Harper's got power. I'd love somebody to go on Twitter, and you won't do this because you'll be buried by the avalanche instead of writing it and to say, I know this coach just got fired? I think he's going to be great. You guys all do realize Bill Belichick got fired first job. You do realize Pete Carroll got fired twice in NFL first two jobs. You do realize Rick Carlisle got fired twice before winning a title in Dallas. You do realize Joe Tori had a losing record at three different places before the Yankee.
Starting point is 01:21:44 You do realize all the time in sports, coaches in bad situations, bad owner, can't get the roster right, get fired. So what? So nobody's got the guts to say, I think Adam Gase is really good. Adam Gase is going to win a lot of games with the Jets. C.J. Mosley came out yesterday, the new linebacker, the Jets got, they went and got Lavian Bell, C.J. Mosley. Those were pro-bowl level players. He said, this dude came here to win. History shows who you got to beat, and he came here to beat New England. Folks, let me remind you about Adam Gase.
Starting point is 01:22:22 None of you have the courage to go online and actually say, well, Belichick got fired, Pete got fired twice, Joe Tori got fired fired, Rick Carlisle got fired twice. Sports gives you rebound coaching stories constantly, constantly. Adam Gase with Miami. not well-run, quarterback injuries left and right, a chaotic organization. He was 13 and 11
Starting point is 01:22:51 when his most talented quarterback was healthy, beat New England twice. He was even one game away from 500, six and eight with retired Jay Cutler. The guy had four different quarterbacks. But when he actually had his best quarterback, Ryan Tannehill, who's not close to Sam
Starting point is 01:23:11 Darnell in terms of talent. He had a winning record. I saw this quote yesterday. I've told you before, Adam Gase and Kyle Shanahan are two of the smartest young offensive guys in the NFL. I've heard that from scouts. You ask people about Adam Gase and Kyle Shanahan.
Starting point is 01:23:29 They're like brothers. Like they're just a see the world the same way. Nobody has the guts to actually say something like, you know that fired coach? He's going to be pretty good. Rick Carlisle, Pete Carroll, Belichick, Joe Torrey. Those are just four
Starting point is 01:23:42 off the top of my head. Sam Darnold's way, way, way better than Ryan Tannahill. Tannahill's now a backup. Lavian Bell, he's never had a weapon like that. C.J. mostly. Jamal Adams.
Starting point is 01:23:58 Leonard Williams are stars right through the middle of that defense. And oh, by the way, they got the third pick in the draft and they're going to get another star. My guess is they're going to get Quinn and Williams. who's either the first or best, second best player on the draft from Alabama or the Josh Allen, the edge rush kid from Kentucky, who I'm not as high on as everybody else, but he's good.
Starting point is 01:24:18 He'll play, he'll get to the pass rusher. Just once, though I wish fans would actually not join the avalanche, but would be willing to be buried by the avalanche. That's courage. That's not being a fence sitter. That's not being captain's safe take. There's enough guys doing this for a living what I do that are captain's safe take that tell you obvious stuff.
Starting point is 01:24:40 I'll put it out there right now. Adam Gase is going to work in New York. Now, his personality may not be a 10-year fit. They're going to win games in New York. They're going to win games. Donald, Mosley, they got elite players. Jamal Adams, elite player, Leonard Williams, Mosley, Labian Bell, upgraded slot receiver,
Starting point is 01:24:58 offensive coach with a young, talented quarterback. They're going to win games. You watch, next five years, New England's not going to dominate this division. not. And the Jets schedule this year, last 10 games they play, they face one elite quarterback, Big Ben. There's a lot of Ryan Fitzpatrick's. There's a lot of Josh Allen's. There's a lot of Lamar Jackson's. There's a lot of so-so quarterbacks in the last 10 games this year for the Jets. Coming up, Chris Haynes right around the corner. All sorts of NBA playoff stuff.
Starting point is 01:25:30 I'll tell you right now, I take Simmons over Joel NB. Do you think I'm nuts? Last night looked like it. Starting point is 01:29:44 Tomorrow it's an MLB double header on FS1. Coverage begins at 3 Eastern as the Pirates host the Giants. Then two of baseball's hottest hitters collide when Cody Bellinger and the Dodgers take on Kristen Yelich and the Brewers. Catch it all on FS1 and the Fox Sports app. By the way, Belinger's hitting 432. I check this morning. We're 21 games in the season.
Starting point is 01:30:03 He's Ted Williams. I think both of those guys homered in their game yesterday. They both have like 10 jacks. Brewer's Dodgers can break it. All right, here's my guy, Chris Haynes in studio, Yahoo Sports, Senior NBA Insider. A little contentious last night between you and Kevin Duran. I'd like to play the tape on this. This is what Big J. journalism does.
Starting point is 01:30:22 You've got to go after the stars once in a while. Let's play this tape. Over last month or so, you've been, you know, passed first, been distributor for the team. That's not true. That's not? No, I don't pass up shots. I just play within the offense.
Starting point is 01:30:38 I said, okay, well, you've been more of a distributor. Is that safe to say? Yeah, it's because I would play. Okay, that's why. Tonight, you wasn't, right? Yeah, because Coach called more plays for me to start. Okay, so moving forward, do you think that it will be a game-by-game basis
Starting point is 01:30:52 as far as how you approach the game? Look, this is, I don't run the show. Any team I've ever been a part of, I'm just a player. I'm just a player. I'm one of the guys, you know what I'm saying? So whatever my coach needs me to do, whether, no matter what it is,
Starting point is 01:31:05 I just got to go out there and be prepared for mentally and physically. So tonight, no different. That's kind of interesting. I like that he pushes back, though. Kevin's fascinating to me. He keeps things interesting. I like it. I got nothing but love for Kevin Durant.
Starting point is 01:31:18 And look, obviously, I think, I guess the way I started off my question, it was kind of, I guess it appeared that I was on a verge of criticizing his approach. But, no, all I wanted to get out of him was basically, you know, you average 12 shots per game, the first two, then all of a sudden, 23 in the third game. Double it. What are we going to see moving forward? What's the approach, you know, after game three? That's all I was trying to get to.
Starting point is 01:31:44 I do think he's the best player in the world. I said the other day, we maybe have a list. I listed, I think currently the 12-plus best players in the league. I think Kevin's one. I think LeBron's two. And I'm not saying there's a big gap between him. I think LeBron will come back next year, go 28, 8, and 8. You know, the LeBron people all think now I hate him.
Starting point is 01:32:01 No, I don't. I just don't like it, the optics this year. I don't think LeBron's had a good leadership year. I still think he's the first or second best player in the year. I'd put Duran over him. Duran's a better defensive player today, I believe. And I think he's more physically in his prime. You okay with me saying Duran's better than LeBron?
Starting point is 01:32:17 I don't have a huge, I wouldn't argue with you on that. I would still lean towards LeBron and then KD. Not much of a margin right there. But, you know, those two right there, that's about the extent. Like if you try to tell me any other player is number one, outside of those two, we'll have an argument. Okay, that's my say. Nothing against Hardin, but he's not as athletic.
Starting point is 01:32:42 Yeah. And Janus can't shoot or handle the ball like those two. So to me, it's still a Durant-Lebron league. I just, and I always felt it was one and two. I just think we've gotten to the point we've crossed, and Durant's moved a little ahead of him. I think some of it is. Durant's a more capable defensive player on most possessions.
Starting point is 01:32:58 I think LeBron, he's saving some energy. Okay. So I'm watching Ben, I said this yesterday, and I'll stand by it. You got to be careful in the NBA. You can't just look at what it is now. What's it becoming? Westbrook was a better player than Hardin in the moment because Hardin's game years ago wasn't as refined.
Starting point is 01:33:20 But going forward, Hardin is who you keep over Westbrook because it was becoming a three-ball shooting league. Embed is a more refined player today than Ben Simmons. I'm not disputing that. But going forward, Ben Simmons is the NBA. You either have to be able to shoot a three or at an elite level, be able to get the ball to guys who can shoot the three. Simmons last night with Embed-out, the lane not clogged.
Starting point is 01:33:46 Ben is dealing, dealing, dealing, or finishing at the rim. If I'm the Sixers, Simmons, I don't think they're built for each other, Chris. I don't. I think as long as they're together, there's going to be a rub and they'll never reach their full potential. Well, that's what we don't know. but obviously I think if it got to a point where they had to decide between the two, I think if you're looking for a clear upside, Ben Simmons and Janice,
Starting point is 01:34:14 those are two guys that you say, if they develop a jump shot, they'll be virtually unstoppable. And for that reason alone, if Ben Simmons is committed and dedicated to taking his game to another level, there's a lot of holes in his game, if he repairs those, he can be a top five talent.
Starting point is 01:34:32 And I'll say this about being. God, he's good. He's good. And he's, when you compare on the MB, he's durable. Like, if you're building a team.
Starting point is 01:34:45 Embed missed two playoff games against Miami. He missed last night. Do you know he's missed more games than Philly that he's played? I heard you say that. And if you're judging by that and he's a big man at that, it's hard for me to invest my franchise into that one player's hands. I agree. The game is moving away from Anthony Davis, Carl Anthony Towns, M.B.
Starting point is 01:35:07 And again, there are 25-12 guys the minute they walk into the arena. I'm not denying that. But you've got to look at where leagues are, it's like in the NFL. If you start looking at the National Football League and what kind of quarterbacks, generally people want people who are more mobile at quarterback because of the new collective bargaining. Offensive lines get less practice, therefore they've deteriorated. and the college football is all spread out, so you don't have to run block much
Starting point is 01:35:35 in college football is in offensive linemen. And I've heard people say this. All things equal, I want a quarterback who can move. Brady is not as attractive today as a guy that can move like a Sam Darnold or a Baker-Mayfield a little. That's just the way the world works. Well, he has a hell of a line where it allows him not to be – where he don't have to move.
Starting point is 01:35:53 He can stay in that pocket. But I'm saying is Ben is the future of the league. I hear what you're saying. I hear what you're saying. But he's the future of league, but still, then, you know, I think he would tell you, there's some major holdsings game that he has to improve in. And if he does so, like I said, he's a top five talent. God, he was good last night.
Starting point is 01:36:10 He was, oh, he was so dominant. Got to keep it up. Okay, so Jason Tatum, you know, I was talking about this. There are certain guys in this league. You know, there's the rookie contract guys, and then there's the veteran guys on their second and third contracts. And Jason Tatum's a baby, but I'm watching this Boston team, man. And they got the best closer in the east. Uh-huh.
Starting point is 01:36:36 I agree with you there. I think they have the best coach in the east. And then... Possibly. I got to tell you, I'm just into Jason Tatum. Yeah. Yeah. What are your thoughts on him as a player?
Starting point is 01:36:46 I was, no, look, I like his skill set. I think, man, you know, you look at his one-on-one skill set. He's up there with anybody up there. But I felt like this season for him, for me, looking up at him and what I projected him to be, it was a little bit of a disappointment for me because he didn't take that next step up. Remember the year he had last year. He was the guy. Obviously, Kyrie Irvin wasn't there and Gordon Hayward wasn't there. See, I would defend him because I think there were two more mouths to feed. And I don't think, I think Jason stepped back because he's
Starting point is 01:37:17 smart and he thought, listen, I got to get Gordon and Kyrie into this thing. So I think you can look at Jason statistically and say he pulled back. Couldn't I argue, this was our tougher team to coach. Kyrie's ball-centric. It is. But at the same, time, you know, Colin, when you're playing for championships, when you're a good team, you're going to play with great players. And so at a certain point, he's going to have to adjust and adapt to plan with other players who are as talented as he is. And so I'm not, I'm not down to him. I just thought, I thought this, I thought this season was going to be an all-star year. Okay. And then get to that point. Okay, I'm taking O KC to win tonight.
Starting point is 01:37:54 Can they still win? I think O KC wins tonight. I think they can win the series, do you? I don't think they can win the series. Okay, so they're done. Yeah, I think, but I still think the series has a potential to go to distance. But it'll be in Portland. Yeah, it'll be in Portland. I'm going to take Portland. As right now, yes.
Starting point is 01:38:14 Boy, I think O KC is going to play their butt off. What have you seen to give you so much confidence that they're going to turn this thing around? They have better players. Are those players better together? Portland's got a better shooter. Mm-hmm. I'm not saying this with a great deal of. vigor and confidence. I'm just saying,
Starting point is 01:38:33 I feel like Indiana's done. I feel like Orlando's done. I feel like Brooklyn's done. I think Oklahoma City's got a pulse. That's all I'm saying. Chris Haynes, Yahoo Sports, Insider, FS1 as well. Great. Seeing you. Hour 3 next. One more herd? The herd streams 24 hours
Starting point is 01:38:49 a day, seven days a week within the IHeart radio app. Search Hurd to listen live or on demand whenever you'd like. Hour 3, baby. We are live in love. Los Angeles. Iheart Radio, Fox Sports Radio and FS1, wherever you may be.
Starting point is 01:39:07 And however, you may be listening. All live last hour fired up Jason McHickett, TJ, Hushman Zada, Jason McIntyre, best for last, blah, blah, blah. It's giving me a great last hour. Got a lot of energy. A lot of energy on a Friday. Nick, we got NBA playoffs tonight. Oklahoma City host Portland.
Starting point is 01:39:24 I like OKC. I'm not betting anything. I got smoked earlier. My kids aren't going to college. Man. Foreclosed on my house. Had to sell my car and a coffee table. I am broke.
Starting point is 01:39:39 I want to go, Blazers. But I like OKC big tonight. I think OKC's got a shot in the series. What I don't like is Damien Lillard, Game 5 and Game 7 at home is tough to beat. He's good. You know, I saw a quote yesterday. Remember earlier this year when the Lakers had those trade rumors
Starting point is 01:39:58 and it just completely unraveled Lonzo and Cooke Usma and Ingram and all the stories came out. Freaked all the young kids out. And I get it, I get it. Nobody wants to hear when they're young and the NBA are getting traded. But Jason Tatum yesterday was asked about trade rumors. I just love this kid. He's from Duke.
Starting point is 01:40:15 He's a Celtics kid. And he said, you know, they're talking about trading me for guys like Anthony Davis. So, I mean, I must be doing something pretty well. I love the game of basketball. Being traded is part of the game. I'll play whomever, wherever. It's something I can't control. Told the New York Times that.
Starting point is 01:40:28 I love this kid. I love everything about everything I want my young players to be. He's smart. He went to Duke. He's long. Length matters. He is athletic. He's a really good shooter.
Starting point is 01:40:38 He can shoot field goals. He can shoot threes. He's never hurt. M. B.'s hurt a lot. Anthony Davis has hurt a lot. This kid's never hurt. Lonzo's hurt a lot. Brandon Ingraham's hurt a lot.
Starting point is 01:40:48 I love this kid. There's just nothing I don't like about this kid. Is he completely polished yet? No. He turns 21 in March. He just turned 21. Just. But I think the Celtics end up winning this series in five.
Starting point is 01:41:05 And there's just, I love this kid. And I told my staff, we often talk about Durant and Steph and LeBron and Yonnes and all the great players. But I said, here's my favorite five guys in the NBA who starting next year will still be on their rookie deals. So these are guys starting next year on their rookie deals. Number five, Deeran Fox in Sacramento. I think he's the most underrated single player in the NBA. 17 and 7. Best record in Sacramento,
Starting point is 01:41:35 a dysfunctional franchise in 13 years. Eight Lonzo ball alive when they played in college basketball. Absurdly quick, very high basketball IQ, and can shoot a three. De Aaron Fox. Number four, Luca Donzich. Probably going to win rookie of the year for Dallas. He's a 27 and 5 guy.
Starting point is 01:41:55 Very much they say an Oscar Robertson type can do everything well offensively. He was a terrific European player. Listen, the next four guys, there's not a big gap on. Is he a revolutionary player or just a basketball player that's good and scores a bunch? I think he's the latter. I don't think he's revolutionary. I don't think he changes the league. I think he scores a bunch of points.
Starting point is 01:42:14 Number three, Ben Simmons. The kid can't shoot, and he's the reigning rookie of the year, and he's a 17, 9, and 8 guy, and he can't shoot. Can you imagine if he could? I also think the Sixers have a choice to make eventually on who's going to run this team, and I don't think going forward you can have two guys M. Bid and Simmons, neither hits the three. You got to make a choice or they'll just keep underachieving. And I think Simmons is the guy last night was a prime example. I don't trust M. Bid's body.
Starting point is 01:42:42 He was out last night, missed two playoff games against Miami last year. He's missed more games than he's played as a sixer. Number two, Jason Tatum. I love him. By the way, he's been, I'll tell you this, here's what I love about him of the many things. You notice the last two years he's been better in the play. playoffs in the regular season. He averaged 15 a game in the regular season.
Starting point is 01:43:05 He's averaging 21 in the playoffs. And he's shooting 55% from the floor. He's shooting 67% on three-point shooters. I don't want to hear about his regular season. They brought in Kyrie Irving. Gordon Hayward was back. This was going to be a rocky regular season for the Celtics. They had to get guys shots.
Starting point is 01:43:22 They had a lot of mouths to feed. Jason Tatum is going to be a difference-making player in this league. Not just a good score. There's nothing I don't like about him. And the number one guy, these are my five guys I love who will be on their rookie contracts next year, Zion Williamson. One the Naismith, 18 years old, projected number one. Physically, he's 285, probably plays in the NBA at 265. He's a 23-9 guy that shot 70% from the field, and that's at the college level where he was hurt,
Starting point is 01:43:54 where, you know, Coach K and most college coaches are a little restrictive offensively. I think he's built more for the NBA than college. My five guys, best five guys in the league next year on their rookie deals, Zion, Jason Tatum, Ben Simmons, Luke Dodditch, and Deeran Fox. Tatum special. I'll just love it. Yeah, I may get traded, whatever. I'll have basketball, play wherever.
Starting point is 01:44:20 Laker players went home and got their binky and it freaked him out and they totally unraveled. He's like, whatever, I'll play wherever. and whatever. Saw this story. So the draft is next week. The Giants have two first round picks. They have the sixth pick and they have the 17th pick. Everybody suggests they probably should take a quarterback.
Starting point is 01:44:39 Of course, my takeaway is they should have taken a quarterback last year. Last year was the best quarterback draft that I can remember. This is really good. Best six, seven-year period. You had Darnold, Rosen, Baker Mayfield, then two guys Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson, who I thought weren't ready yet. They were more ready than I thought. they have potential to be starting quarterbacks for a long time.
Starting point is 01:45:01 Lamar made the playoffs and Josh Allen. He's a little reckless, but at times he was brilliant. But instead, they chose the New York Giants who needed should have taken Sam Darnold. Instead, inexplicably, they let their crosstown rival who shares the stadium take the player. Sam Darnel. I think it's a big mistake. By the way, the Jets this year with young Sam Darnold, they're over under is like seven, seven and a half. I think they'll go over.
Starting point is 01:45:24 The Giants over under this year with veterinary. Eli is six. There you go. And Eli is six with Sequin Barclay and a much improved O-line. Sam has got one of the worst O-lines, one of the worst receiving cores, and they're giving him seven. And so Sequin this week said, hey, enough of this stuff. I'm pretty good. The Giants didn't make a mistake.
Starting point is 01:45:51 My mindset is continue to prove to the people in this locker room in this building that they got the right guy. And not only I'm saying right guy because, yes, I can go out there and break an idiotic touchdown. I heard a little guy. Yes, there's a lot of people in the lead that can do that. But it's a guy who's going to buy in and get other people to buy in and take that leadership role. Not being cocky of any way, but if a rookie to year doesn't sway that mindset, then I don't know what will. In a way, it proves my point. It's never been about rookie of the year.
Starting point is 01:46:20 Eddie Lacey won rookie of the year. It's about impact. Got a running back, there were seven, eight draftable running backs. It was an incredible running back draft last year. This year it's a terrible running back draft. It's terrible. It's one of the worst running back drafts I've ever seen. Last year was great.
Starting point is 01:46:37 You didn't have to take a running back at two. Last year was a great running back draft. I'm not saying he didn't need a running back. It was also the best quarterback draft in years. What's more valuable? Would you rather be the Jets today or the New York Giants? I'd rather be the Jets. So the Jets said, you know, we need running backs too.
Starting point is 01:46:55 But what we really need to quarterback. It wasn't about winning rookie of the year. It was about who's going to have a 12-13-year impact. What lasts longer? A quarterback in this league or a running back? Nobody doubts Saquan Barclay can play. I always said I thought he was a better version of Reggie Bush. He'd be better between the tackles than Reggie was, had the Reggie Bush home run quality.
Starting point is 01:47:15 But last year, never forget, this was the moment, changed the franchise, and here's what the New York Jets did. The New York Giants have not traded this pick. They have made it. Could it be Sam Darnold? Could it be Sequan Barclay? This is a linchpin pick of the 2018 draft. With the second pick in the 2018 NFL draft, the New York Giants Select,
Starting point is 01:47:39 Sequin Barclay, running back, Penn State. Well, what it tells you right off the bat is that Dave Gettleman did not believe that any of the quarterbacks left on the board were a franchise quarterback. I think that's exactly what it said, or Dave Gettelman was a friend.
Starting point is 01:47:54 to take somebody and bother Eli Manning, but if you didn't think Sam Darnel was a franchise quarterback, and I'm not even a Baker-Mayfield fan, I wouldn't have drafted him. He's not my guy, but I can say it now. You know, I was in the Chargers' War Room. They thought Darnel was better, but they liked Baker Mayfield. Everybody liked Baker Mayfield.
Starting point is 01:48:13 He wasn't my cup of tea because of his nonsense on the sideline, but everybody thought he was good. Nobody had him as a fourth-round prospect. Nobody did. Almost every board. I knew of four boards in the end. NFL. They all had Donald ahead. That's, I'm not going to tell you exactly where they had him, but they had him ahead of
Starting point is 01:48:29 Baker Mayfield. Of the four teams that I know, they all had him, and you can figure out which ones. But it was a great quarterback draft, and by the way, this year, Vegas has your over under it six for the Giants and seven for the Jets. And do you want to be the Giants this morning? According to a rumor this morning, they could pick Daniel Jones in the first round. That's what the Giants are, Daniel Jones, who, by the way, is a C-plus. armed talent. It's a C-plus athlete. And my takeaway on Daniel Jones is, I'm not sure he's ever
Starting point is 01:49:00 going to get better coaching than he had in college with David Cutcliffe. I'm not sure he'll ever have an NFL coach as a quarterback coach that's better than his college coach. So this is not a shot at Seque Juan Barclay. Sequin Barclay can play. That's not the issue. Of course he can play. Nobody doubted he can play. But it's about big time, long-term impact. I I will tell you something that's funny about the draft. I hear this all the time. Remember when Dave Gettleman, he got defensive when the media pressed him on taking, here's Gettleman's take on, you got to take the best player, you can't take need and blah, blah, blah.
Starting point is 01:49:38 Here's what Gettelman said. I'm just telling you, I'm not going to force a pick. You can't draft for need. You'll get screwed every time. You'll make a mistake. I've always thought this is funny. Belichick says the same thing. You cannot draft for need.
Starting point is 01:49:57 You just have to take the best player available. Let me ask you this. The Patriots last year lost a left tackle and a running back. So their two biggest needs were arguably an offensive lineman and a running back. Who did the Patriots take last year, first two picks? Offensive linemen and a running back. Were those the best two players on their board? Wink, wink, wink.
Starting point is 01:50:20 Sure they were. everybody always tells me the San Francisco 49ers I don't think it was last year it was the year before needed a tackle and they took this kid from Notre Dame it was a tackle and everybody said oh it's a big reach he's actually been unbelievable and it solved their offensive line issues they have a great right tackle he's a mauler this idea that you've got to just take the best player on the board
Starting point is 01:50:45 regardless well if the New York Jets the best player on the board was a middle linebacker and they have C.J. Mosley why are you taking C.J. Mosley. Why would you draft the guy that you got C.J. Mosley. Why would you take a linebacker who plays the same position? I don't buy this. You never consider what you need. I don't buy
Starting point is 01:51:03 that. If my wife told me, go to the store, we need eggs, bread, and milk. That's what we need in the house. We don't have, we need to go and make breakfast. I want to make French toast. I need milk, eggs, and bread. And I came back with a rake. And I said it was a
Starting point is 01:51:20 value. It was the best value in the store. Rakes were on sale. And she's like, we got a rake. I don't need a rake. Well, they, no, she'd say we don't need a rake. Well, the value, what?
Starting point is 01:51:38 You can't tell me drafting for need. What did the chargers, one of the best drafting teams in the NFL do last year in their draft? What did they need to? What was their big weakness? They couldn't stop to run up the middle. They went and got a safety Derwin James. Next pick was a linebacker.
Starting point is 01:51:54 Their run defense got better. Were those with the two best players? Well, they were good players, but they were good players that solved a need. In the NFL today, you can't be terrible at anything. You don't have to be great at everything. But New England is almost never terrible at anything. Because in the NFL, it's so sophisticated. If you're just bad at something, teams will just eat you alive.
Starting point is 01:52:19 on it. They'll just eat you. They'll go after it and after it. If Andy Reed thinks you have bad corners, he's going to go after it for three and a half hours. He's just going to go right at it. That's what Belichick does. What's your weakness? I'm going to go at it for three and a half hours. So I never
Starting point is 01:52:35 buy into that whole thing that you don't consider some need. If I need a quarterback and he's available, but he doesn't grade quite as high as a corner and I've got two great corners, I'm taking the quarterback. It's what I need. And he's, he can't be bum, but I never buy into this.
Starting point is 01:52:53 Need doesn't matter in life. Needs everything. You can't take a lousy player, but if I have a board of 100 players, am I willing to take the 27th player over the 24th player on my board if one, I have no need and one I have an absolute need? Of course. Of course I'm going to consider need. If I have a, you know, because this is what the teams do.
Starting point is 01:53:19 they have every player listed, one through 500 players. Now, I'm not going to go 420 over 7 or 318 over 80. But if they're close and I got two good corners and I don't have a quarterback, I'm taking my need. If the quarterback's 13th of my board and the corner is 7, I'm taking the quarterback. I don't need another corner. I'm taking the quarterback. TJ Hushman's out of.

Nothing worse than pro athletes telling you, you haven't worked out in eight years, and then they look great. T.J. Hushman Zada just told me, I just worked out for the first time in eight, seven, eight years. I'm like, the hell? Look at you. If I went seven years, I'd look like a donut salesman. It's probably more like four to five.
Starting point is 01:58:18 That's not even, and then you ran hills yesterday. Yeah, we did sprint up a little. I don't even want to hear it. But I don't eat a lot either, though. I'm not a big eater. That could be why. I mean you're not a big eater? You don't like food?
Starting point is 01:58:31 I enjoy food, but I don't eat it. Like, I only eat throughout the day, just a ton of fruit, drink water, and then I'll have one big meal a day. Like, I won't eat a meal until like 3 o'clock, 4 o'clock every day. I don't even know. Seriously, I don't even know how you do that. Okay, so here's a quote that came from the Raiders today. Raiders are a circus.
Starting point is 01:58:50 So Ian Rappaport reported that they sent their scouts home. And I'm not saying scouts show up at the war room because they don't historically. You'll have your director of scouting in a war room for the draft. You'll have your director of pro scouting, your director of college scouting. But Ian Rappaport says, sources, Raiders coach John Gruden and GM Mike Mayock sent their scouts home for the weekend, not expected to return by draft time. The belief is they don't know who to trust and wanted to clear the room. The hell?
Starting point is 01:59:14 What does that mean? I don't even know what that means. Why are they, if you don't trust them, they shouldn't be working for you. That's almost, I'm sure this happens all the time, but do they actually, probably one of the scouts that got sent home, called somebody who was like, can you believe what just happened? And that's how Ian Rappaport got the story. But wow, I've never heard of that before.
Starting point is 01:59:35 Yeah, and I'm not saying that scouts show up in the draft room. The draft room's got 12 people, the GM, the owner, the owner's kids, the coach. Could it be they don't want them? seeing the draft board and how they have guys ranked and who's one, who's two and so forth and so on. It's weird. It's weird. That's all I'm saying. Okay, here's a story I saw
Starting point is 01:59:55 yesterday. So, I don't think I'd handle this as well as Josh Rosen. So Josh Rosen shows up in Arizona. The O line stinks. They fire the head coach. They fire the coordinator midseason. For the last two months they keep telling you how much they like Kyler Murray. They run a hype video yesterday
Starting point is 02:00:11 in Arizona. They don't put Josh in it. Right. And Josh comes out and he had a he I want to hear's the sound from Josh Rosen talking about his stay in Arizona so far I definitely understand the situation I mean it's annoying but like it is what it is football is a business and I definitely respect the higher ups and their decisions I think this season probably went as poorly as it could possibly go but within that had an unbelievable time we won three games and each one of those
Starting point is 02:00:41 wins for to me it felt like I won the Super Bowl I got to tell tell you, I don't know if I'd handle this as well as Josh Rosen. He sounds like a franchise quarterback to me. That sounds like poise under noise. I'm telling you, call me an idiot. I like Josh Rosen as well. This is the problem that I have. If Josh Rosen was in this draft, where would he be ranked?
Starting point is 02:01:05 Number one. So with that, if it, okay, let's just say number two. Okay. worst. Any team that is going to and wants to draft a quarterback this year, are you that incompetent that you wouldn't trade your first round pick for a guy that was just drafted last year who, if he was in this draft, would be rated higher than every quarterback that's not Kyler Murray, and he might be rated higher than Kyler Murray. Why wouldn't you? If you're the Giants, why would you draft a quarterback instead of trading the 17th pick for Josh Rosen?
Starting point is 02:01:37 I don't get it. And I'll tell you this. I do not. I think here's the situation. Arizona moved up to get Rosen and Steve Kimes' jobs on the line if they don't win this year. And if he, I was told this years ago by a guy in the league, if Kime doesn't get a first round pick for him, then it looks like he whiffed on Rosen. If Arizona had a brand new GM today, he would make the deal. Because I know two teams that have already offered Arizona on the number two pick, and Kine's like, no, I want a first round pick.
Starting point is 02:02:08 I agree with you. If I was a New York Giants, I tried my 17th pick. 100%. Because you're going to draft a quarterback anyway. Get the better one. Why would? And this is the thing. Josh Rosen is going to be a good quarterback in the NFL.
Starting point is 02:02:23 I mean, you look at Arizona. You tell me what quarterback would have thrived on that team last year. That was, you couldn't tell me Baker Mayfield would have played like that with Arizona last year. There's no way. Sam, they're not playing the way they played if they were in Arizona last year. And so you have to look at all the variables, who he was playing with. He had a defensive coach and he gets fired. I mean, it was everything, as you would say, was so dysfunctional.
Starting point is 02:02:49 How can he succeed? Yeah, I, this is a very average quarterback draft. And Rosen, last year in the quarterback draft was seen as the third best, according to the draft order. This year, I think, in your points on, I think he's the, second best. In fact, if you like dynamic athletes, you take Kyler. I think Rosen is significantly
Starting point is 02:03:14 better than all the other guys. Kyler, you can make an argument for. And the thing is, people forget this. Josh Rosen ran a spread offense in high school. Josh Rosen ran a spread offense in college. I know coaches that coached him in high school and in college, and they said the first day he got to UCLA, and
Starting point is 02:03:30 these are all NFL coaches, they were amazed how he threw the ball, fresh out of high school. They were amazed. Oh, my God, we can't believe this guy. Storm. patient. He's not waiting until the guy gets open. He's throwing him open. And this is fresh out of high school. Josh Rosen can play, man. He just needs to be put in a situation
Starting point is 02:03:46 where he can succeed. It's funny. I was saying earlier, nobody's willing to defend the fired guy. Nobody wanted to say, Bill Belichick knows what he's doing after he was fired in Cleveland. If you would have said on the air, I think he's going to be great in New England, you'd get
Starting point is 02:04:02 crushed. Nobody was willing to say with Pete Carroll after he was fired twice, hey, he's going to work at USC. And then in Seattle. The way it works, Joe Torrey was fired multiple times. Rick Carlisle was fired two times before he went to Dallas or three times. Mike Dan Tony was fired three times, Denver Nuggets, Knicks, Lakers, and then he gets hired by Houston.
Starting point is 02:04:22 We have a history of coaches getting fired, going into a better situation and kicking butt. I said this about Adam Gase. I think people don't have the guts in the media. That Adam Gage. Because he's intense and he got fired. he was 13 and 11 with Tannahill. They have a dysfunctional owner. They had a dysfunctional franchise.
Starting point is 02:04:43 They had massive injuries at quarterback. He almost had a 500 record with retired Jay Cutler. You know Sam Darnold. I think Darnold and Gase are going to be a massive hit. I agree with you. And I spent a little time with Sam Darnold this off season with Jordan Palmer. And he said from my conversations, I can't wait. This is going to be great.
Starting point is 02:05:05 And that's exact words he used. I cannot wait to get there. I love him already. He haven't spent time with him, but just talked with him over the phone about things they're going to do. And he got off of that phone conversation, impressed with what he heard.
Starting point is 02:05:18 And Tannenhill was a receiver in college. He was a wide receiver in college. You went 13 and 11 with the guy that played my position in college. And so when he get like, the dolphins were competitive. They beat New England twice. They were competitive.
Starting point is 02:05:36 They weren't a walk in the park. And you can say, oh, going to Miami, it's really hot. You play in there. But he did wonders with Tannenhill. If Tenton Hill doesn't get hurt, they're getting a big contract. Right. And so now you put him with Sam Darno, who is going to have a pretty damn good career. You get Lavian Bell, who is, he can do everything.
Starting point is 02:05:58 They got a slot receiver, Crowder. The Jets, they're going to draft the receiver out with. The Jets are on their way up. And Adam Gase is going to be a big reason. And because of that, he gets it. He knows all the mistakes that he made in Miami, he's going to rectify those with same division. So you're very familiar with your division follows.
Starting point is 02:06:17 He's familiar with New England. He's familiar with Miami. I just coached those players. You're familiar with Buffalo. You're also familiar with how you game planned against the Jets. So now you can go impact that team as well because this is what we did when I coached against you. And so that's going to help them out as well.
Starting point is 02:06:32 By the way, schedules came out this week. Do you make anything of them? You know what, not really, Colin, because when you look at the schedules, you could last year, people would look at Chicago and say, oh, that's a win. Oh, no, it wasn't. It's a loss. And there's always going to be a couple teams, give or take, that you expect to be good. They're not so good.
Starting point is 02:06:51 Everybody thought Jacksonville would be really good last year. Not so much. Green Bay as well, not so much. You didn't think Chicago would do well. And so there's always going to be teams that surprise you good and bad. See, I look at the Bears schedule. I think it's tough, man. At Denver in September, that's the toughest place in the league.
Starting point is 02:07:10 When's the last time the Broncos lost a home game, first two weeks of the year in Denver? I think it's like 31 and 3. If they lose to Green Bay at home in the opener, at Washington, at Andrew Luck, Derek Carr, Drew Breeze, Philip Rivers, Carson Wentz, Matt Stafford, Jared Gough, Patrick Mahomes. Look at the quarterbacks they face.
Starting point is 02:07:31 10 of the 16 games for the Chicago Bears. They got the second best quarterback. If they lose that home opener to Green Bay, I think they're an eight-win team, a nine-win team max. That schedule is... Look at all the top quarterbacks. It's going to be tough sledding. You look at that schedule.
Starting point is 02:07:48 I mean, literally, you can start 0-and-2, and then at Washington isn't going to be a walk-in-a-park either. You could see yourself realistically, O-and-four to start the season. Maybe one in three you give them to Washington. And here comes Derek Carr, Drew Brees, Philip Rivers, Carson Wentz, Matt Stafford, Jared Gough in a row. Because the Raider, you're playing at Oakland.
Starting point is 02:08:08 They're going to be better. Say what you want to say, John, Gru, they're going to be better. Yeah, it's going to be tough sledding. But again, you lose your defensive coordinator as well. That's always tough. And you play them in the second week. I'm pretty sure he's going to know how to attack you. Yeah, Denver knows.
Starting point is 02:08:24 Yeah, Vic Fonjiil knows your personnel. He's going to know how to attack you. And it's going to be the second game of the season. You don't really know what they're going to do offensively. the Bears, it looks like... Like that schedule I looked at and I thought, okay, I'm taking a win off him. I'm not saying it's going to make a bad team good or a good team bad. That schedule, those quarterbacks lined up in the first nine weeks, I'm like, I don't like that.
Starting point is 02:08:48 Trubisky should be better. He should be better. He's out here working hard. I've seen him out here. He's out here. I will give him that. He's out here working, man. Working what?
Starting point is 02:08:57 The night clubs, the restaurants? What's he working? He's working getting better, man. This quarterbacks out there every day, man. and he's been out here with the 3D QB guys trying to get better, man. I've seen them. All right. Good seeing you, buddy.
Starting point is 02:09:10 Have a good weekend. Thank you. You as well. T.J. Husband's audit. Veteran newsman, John Goulet. No, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news.
Starting point is 02:09:22 Colin 49ers quarterback, Jimicarapalotor is ACL week three last year derailing the 49er season. Yeah. But he is appreciating the steps of recovery. He said, quote, it's encouraging. Every day gets easier and easier. I'm able to make this throw better than I was a week ago. It's small victories like that. Throughout the whole process, it's all about small victories
Starting point is 02:09:41 because you're not going to jump out and be able to throw it 60, 70 yards again. You were big on the Niners last year. And then he got hurt. They looked pretty good their first couple of games before he got injured. Are you still big on them? Yeah, no, I mean, they have the number two pick. So they're going to get a great football player. I mean, my only knock on the 49ers,
Starting point is 02:10:01 how many defensive linemen can they keep drafting? I mean, if Bost is available, I'd take him. Kind of have to it, too, right? Yeah. Unless you can trade down. Listen, what do they need? They need a corner. They need a wide receiver.
Starting point is 02:10:16 They got a bunch of two wide receivers. I think they need a wide receiver. It's a bad running back draft. I'd like to see him get another running back, but it's a bad one. They got the kid from Atlanta, so I'm good with their running backs. They need a corner. I don't like their corners a ton. Again, they need an edge rusher.
Starting point is 02:10:32 They need a wide receiver. what they need is Jimmy G to be healthy. Yeah. Because he's one injury away from like, oh, you're the injury guy. He got hurt when he played briefly in New England. He got hurt with the Niners. He's one injury away and then you can't rely on him anymore. It's time to see who's going places.
Starting point is 02:10:49 Sponsored by Toyota. The Browns feel like they're going places and they are charging people accordingly. Last year on the day the schedule is released, the median Brown's ticket was a very affordable $62. this year it's almost doubled and the median price is $131. Wow. Are they getting a little ahead of themselves expecting or with expectations for this season? Double ticket prices?
Starting point is 02:11:18 Cleveland's not a rich city. That's asking a lot of your fans. That's a 120. So that means if you go. $131 is the median price. Okay. So family of four, husband, wife, and two kids. So 125 times four.
Starting point is 02:11:33 is 500 bucks. Yep. That's before I have to park, eating. You can't go to a little football game. You're asking a lot of fans in Cleveland. I don't think you can sit in the cold weather in Cleveland without beer. That just seems awful. That seems like you're asking.
Starting point is 02:11:46 That's a lot. Last year it cost you $2.50 this year five. That's a big jump for eight times a year. I mean, shouldn't the fans of Cleveland be, like, shouldn't prices stay the same? Hey, we've been terrible for 20 years, so we're not going to hike prices just yet? Well, I think they're going to still sell out the stadium because of Odell. I think it's the old. Del Beckham brings that kind of revenue to a team.
Starting point is 02:12:07 I think O'Dell Beckham's got that. O'Dell Beckham deserves a cut of that. That's amazing. I don't know if, is that ever happened that somebody doubled their ticket prices one year to the next? Probably not when you're in the same. Maybe if you've got a new stadium, new environment, but no, not in a place like Cleveland. Wow.
Starting point is 02:12:27 And finally, according to Wodge, Lakers GM, Rob Polinka is meeting with Ty Loo. as we speak or already met with him this morning about the Lakers head coaching position you had said that he was their second choice but you weren't sure if they were going to be able to get their first choice Monty Williams he's their second choice but he'll get the job so do you think it's because they won't wait for Monty Williams
Starting point is 02:12:51 or Monty Williams will be the Sixers head coach he'll be the Sixers head coach what does that say that he would rather wait for the potential Sixers job than take the Lakers job right now Well, I would too. I think the Sixers job, although there's some chemistry issues, I love their players. I love the Sixers' talent. I think it's the second-best roster in the league.
Starting point is 02:13:12 I think it goes Golden State best roster, Philly's second-best roster, Houston, third-best roster, Boston, fourth-best roster. How hard do you think LeBron and maybe Rich Paul are calling Polinket, telling him hire Tyron Liu? I don't know if they are. I don't know if Rich would do that. I don't think they'd do that. I don't think Rich Paul would be that heavy-handed on that. I don't. No. I think they'd take either guy. I think they may prefer tie, but I don't think Rich Paul would do that.
Starting point is 02:13:36 He certainly has more head coaching success in his past than Monty Williams. Lakers' number one issue is get somebody that can run the franchise. It's not the coach. LeBron kind of coaches on the floor. Their big issue is who's going to be directing their drafting, and they've got to get somebody running the franchise. They also need someone that can shoot. That would be. They can use out. Veteran newsman, John Goulin. Well, that's the news. Thanks for stopping by.
Starting point is 02:14:01 The Herdline News. Coming up, Jason McIntyre, tomorrow's headlines today. One of my favorite segments coming up. Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd, weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific. All right, Jason McIntyre founded the big lead.com. Now he's on Fox Sports Radio on Saturdays, FS1 every Friday, one of my favorite segments, where you come in and say, we're going to give you headlines that are going to show up in America, and they're going to show up in a couple of weeks.
Starting point is 02:14:28 And if you're a newspaper guy, you're a former. Ink Stain Wretch? Oh, when I was like 23. You were the newspaper business. I think I was making like $23,000 a year, really struggling in New York City, running up debt trying to like be a playboy in New York City at the time. As a newspaper guy. It didn't work well. I quickly got the heck out of newspapers, yeah. All right. Tomorrow's headlines today, will the Thunder come back down O2 to Portland? Well, you got two guys here who love to bash Russell Westbrook. Yeah. But Colin, I believe the headline tomorrow will be Thunder, Storm,
Starting point is 02:15:00 Russell Westbrook, five for 20 in game two, took a pounding. And I just want to remind everybody that Kevin Durant took a pounding from a certain radio host here about Patrick Beverly shutting him down. And Kevin Durant responded with a nice 38-point performance last night. Look like the best player on the planet. I like Russell Westbrook to strike back tonight big time. I've been giving out a lot of winners on coming up winners, the podcast, and on Lock It in this week with Clay and Todd. You've been hot. I will say this.
Starting point is 02:15:29 Russell Westbrook props for overpoints. He's going to go nuts tonight. I expect a 30-point triple-double. Yeah. Listen, Russell's a very prideful guy. Yes. And this roster's got, I like Billy Donovan, Stephen Adams, Paul George, Russell Westbrook. Now, I do think they've got a architecture issue.
Starting point is 02:15:46 They need more shooters. And they don't need one more shooter. Tough to find shooters. No, it is. Ask LeBron. Yeah. So I think they have a failure by the front office to figure out. Three years ago, don't give up shooters.
Starting point is 02:16:02 And so they've got a problem, but I agree with you. All right. Yesterday I went on a big rant. Yes. Will the 76ers actually trade Ben Simmons? There's a story out yesterday. Colin, I can't believe this. I was so disappointed in you.
Starting point is 02:16:14 Trade Ben Simmons. The headline will be no need for Embeded. I love it. Yeah. Now Sixers fans, stop throwing stuff at the television. Don't turn off your radio. I know they're fired up about this. But the reality is, Colin, when you have Ben Simmons as the full
Starting point is 02:16:29 point and you surround him with shooters. What did Tobias Harris do last night? Six for six on threes. J.J. Redick had 26 points. Listen, this is not a center league right now. It's wings and guards. Ben Simmons is dominant. Now, Joel Embed has a great player efficiency rating. He's a phenomenal talent.
Starting point is 02:16:45 He's a great player. But he's hurt all the time. He makes Blake Griffin look reliable. Yes, listen. Carl Anthony Towns, great player. Embeddardt, great player. Show me all their playoff wins. You can marginalize these bigs in the play. And most of the time, they're not great free throw shooters, by the way, down the stretch.
Starting point is 02:17:03 And Simmons was good at the line last night. A lot of guys pushing back. Well, Jason, game two, they scored 145. Mbid played 21 minutes, okay, because he's hurt. He's always hurt. Guy, you know, in his career, since he was drafted in 2014, Joelle Embedat has missed more games than he's played in. I mean, what kind of stat is that?
Starting point is 02:17:20 I like him, but give me Ben Simmons to build around over Mb. God, I, in Bede. Do you know how angry people are going to be when they see this? No, listen. The Philly fans love Embed because he's cool. This is why I call Philadelphia the OKC of the East. In the moment, Sam Presti said, I like Westbrook more than Hardin. And in the moment of that trade, Westbrook was a more refined player.
Starting point is 02:17:43 But basketball has always been about what's happening in the next 10 years. And Hardin had way, way greater ceiling than Westbrook because he's a great one-on-one shooter. Even Chris Bussar, we go toe to toe on this. He said Ben Simmons can't shoot. Everybody in the league knows this. and he still cannot be stopped. I know he can't shoot yet. He's 22 years old, but he doesn't have to
Starting point is 02:18:03 because he can post anybody up or take him to the basket. Ben Simmons is one of the future players in this league. All right, looking a little further into the future. Will Kevin Durant be in the conversation for greatest player ever tomorrow's headline today? You know, I saw Kevin Durant last night. I went to Staples up close.
Starting point is 02:18:17 Got a little nugget for Durant. I'll drop on you shortly. But the headline will be, call him the goatee. Michael Jordan is the goat, of course. Call Kevin Durant the goatee. The great staff here at the herd, people are getting upset. They just told me an amazing stat.
Starting point is 02:18:35 I want to hear it. Three players in NBA history have averaged more than 20 points per game in every season they played. Michael Jordan, out of the gate, amazing. LeBron James, you want to take a gander who the other one is? Kevin Durant. He's in that class, man. I'm telling you this guy. So we call LeBron a freak because he's what, 6-8-260.
Starting point is 02:18:54 When you see Durant up close, Colin, this is a seven-footer with a handle. He was running point guard last night. I'm telling you. So the chatter last night at Staples was that, and I don't think this is out there, this space jam movie, LeBron is going heavily at Kevin Durant to be the head bad guy, the head monster or whatever Space Jam thing is. And Kevin Durand is considering being in Space Jam too. Now, Janice has said no.
Starting point is 02:19:18 Anthony Davis is all in, of course, because he wants to be there. But Kevin Durand is considering having a starring role in the LeBron movie. You call him the greatest goat e? Yeah, he's got the goatee. By the way, anybody who says, I'm Kevin Durant. You all know who I am. That's pretty cool, Colin. At some point, you need to go, I'm Colin Cowhert. You know, you need to do that. It's funny. I did it last night. It didn't work. I will say this. When you see Durant in person, I've seen him three times in person. He is unbelievable. He is a huge feat. He's a seven-footer. Yeah. And he's avoided the injuries in large part the last few years. He's had little injuries. Yeah, and I can't wait for that Rockets Warrior Series next. By the way, that's the NBA finals. You know that, right?
Starting point is 02:20:01 The ratings have been awful in the NBA. Of course, nobody's talking about it. Golden State Houston will get a number. That'll get a big number. Kevin Durant, I know he's watching because he's a big media consumer, shall we say. All right. Tomorrow's headlines today. Will the Cowboys give Dak Prescott a big contract?
Starting point is 02:20:16 So, Colin, this has the potential to be incendiary. Dallas, I think they need to focus closely. the headline will be Cowboys Ditch Dack Trade for Josh Rosen. Now what lead you to believe that's possible? I'll float it to you. Somebody smart mentioned this to me
Starting point is 02:20:34 that the Cowboys have to pay Amari Cooper next summer. They also have to pay Dak Prescott. And the year after that, they've got to pay Ezekiel Elliott. Don't forget about the linebacker, the kid out of Notre Dame, Jalen Brown. I mean, this is a... Jailin Smith, sorry.
Starting point is 02:20:47 This is a situation for Dallas where if you want to keep Dak, Russell Wilson just got 35 million a year. Are you saying Dak Prescott is a 30 million quarterback? He has one playoff win. He's going to be commanding top dollar or trying. And if you're Jerry Jones, you say, huh, look at all the playoff teams last year.
Starting point is 02:21:06 A bunch of guys on their rookie contracts. If I can buy Josh Rosenlo and replace him with Dak, just let Dak go, then you pay everybody. I think that's the move for the Cowboys. I like Dak. I'm not giving him anywhere near $30 million. Well, it's really funny because you know, you get paid on a lot of things.
Starting point is 02:21:24 You get paid on your talent. But a lot of getting paid is on leverage and timing. And the bottom line is they have the two best linebackers, young linebackers in the NFL. They're going to have to pay their corner Jones. Byron Jones, yep. They got to pay him. He's an elite corner. They got to pay Smith, the linebacker.
Starting point is 02:21:40 By the way, if he remains healthy, he'll be a top three linebacker in the league for the next seven years. They just played Demarcus Lawrence. They're going to have to pay Amari and Zeke. You know, it's a very fascinating argument. This is the showdown. They've got too many big contracts coming up. What are you calling the ceiling of what you're paying, Dak? Are you giving a guy with one playoff win $30 million a year?
Starting point is 02:22:00 Oh, I can't. Okay. Well, Jack is going to say Russell Wilson got 35. By the way, you have made outrageous claims on their show before, and they've come to fruition. This is what I do, Colin. I know. You deliver it. In all reality, if you're the Dallas Cowboys and Jerry Jones, this has to be in play.
Starting point is 02:22:16 By the way, Goulet. Okay. Jones contract, DeMarcus Lawrence contract, Zeech contract, Amari contract, Jalen Smith contract. You can't have five huge contracts on your team. This is not crazy. I ran into Skip Bayliss in the parking lot and I'm curious if he's going to talk about this on Monday because in all serious it is the Cowboys should consider it. Goulet, what do you make of this? Come on, Goulet. I'm fine with it. It doesn't bother me at all. You're not a big Dack guy. I'm not a big Dack. I wouldn't give Dack a contract at all. I would let him play it out. Yeah, Gule. They got to pay him next year unless they want to.
Starting point is 02:22:48 a franchise tag, DAC, and then you eventually got to pay him. As soon as you pay DAC, you close your own Super Bowl window. Bingo. So why do it? No, no, that's the truth. Once you pay these quarterback, look at the Giants with Eli Manning. They paid him. What have they done lately?
Starting point is 02:23:02 Colin, you've got to keep build around the quarterback on the rookie deal. Josh Rosen, Jerry, call him up. All right. Urban Meyer was great today. Mark Medina, Chris Haynes, T.J. Hushmanzada, Jason McIntyre. We will see you Monday. What a show today. Speak for yourself.
Starting point is 02:23:17 is coming up right after our show. What a week today. What a show. NFL draft. I'll take the thunder to beat the Blazers tonight. I still claim they're alive in the series. It's the Heard. One more Heard?
