That's where Sports Slice comes in.
I'm Timbo, and every episode,
we're cutting through the noise,
breaking down the biggest moments in sports
and giving you the real story behind the headline.
And we're going straight to the source,
the athletes themselves,
their locker room stories, their reactions in the moment,
and the stuff nobody gets to hear.

Another podcast from some SNL late night comedy guy, not quite.
Unhumor me with Robert Smigel and friends.
Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier.
This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer Streeter Seidel,
help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Where does your group perform?
We do some retirement homes.
Those people are starving for banter.

In for the vacationing Colin Cowherd.
I'm Doug Gottlieb on IHeart Radio, Fox Sports Radio, and FS1, live from Los Angeles.
Football on TV.
Right? Like, I don't know.
I'm pointing upstairs.
Don't know who's responsible.
Roger Goodell.
George Hallis.
I don't know, but thank you.
Football.
Back on TV.
So we got a chance to see Kyler Murray play last night for the Arizona Cardinals.
And as it may be, with all young players, we're going to overreact to how good he was, how good he looked.
And he was six and seven.
and 44 yards for a team that was arguably the most boring team in the National Football League.
They were exciting to watch.
I was thrilled.
I was fascinated.
I was like, man, I cannot wait.
It's important to point out that while he was tremendous,
he was, in fact, moving in times and running for his life,
and that's against the Chargers without Joey Bosa and without Melvin Ingram,
two dynamic pass rushers that didn't play for the Chargers.
But let's not make overwhelming thoughts and predictions on
what he is or will be and what his upside is.
And, you know, can he be a five foot nine and a half Pat Mahomes?
That's really what we're kind of trying to figure.
Can he be a five, nine and a half, Pat Mahomes?
Is that possible? Is that possible?
I don't know.
I don't know.
Yes, I know he measured it five, ten, or whatever, but the truth is, most people think
that there was something funny going on with those measurements.
But what I do know is, well, what I do, I know two things from watching Arizona play last night.
First, David Johnson in fantasy football, he's going to get 110 catches, right?
Isn't he?
David Johnson is the perfect back and in the perfect situation, which brings me to Kyler Murray.
What is life about?
What is your job about, your relationship with your significant other about, your friends about?
so much of it is about your fit.
It's not good people, bad people, right?
Some people don't work in a relationship,
not because one person's good and one person's bad,
but because they don't fit.
Like, you can be opposites and attract, can you fit together.
You can be the exact same, can you fit together?
Sometimes being the exact same thing can lead,
to disasters because you're both so stubborn or you're both so shy or sometimes it can be perfect.
And the same can be true for opposites, right?
Opposites can in fact attract because that person brings you balance.
But do they bring you joy?
Do they fit what you need in that time in your life?
The same is true at your job.
You know, it's not even sometimes about the job.
It's about the job and when it fits in your life.
Man, that was a great job.
But it was in New York and it was at a time of my dad.
dad was sick and I wanted to be in L.A. And it just didn't fit me at that time.
Or I had a relationship that was a great relationship, but I had just gotten out of a long-term
relationship and it didn't in fact work. Football teams are much the same. Basketball teams are
the same. To play for the Lakers back when they had Shaq and Kobe and ran the triangle,
it didn't matter how good a point guard you were. If you had to have the ball in your hands,
and you had to run screen and roll of your John Stockton, that wasn't going to work.
Do you know why?
Because that's not how they played.
You weren't a good fit.
I mean, think about it.
Pat Mahomes, had he gone to a different team?
You know, the Bears, for example, like Pat Mahomes.
But they felt like Mitch Trubisky, because Trubisky was a little bit more what they thought was buttoned up,
because he had sat before in college.
They felt like he was a better fit for them.
Now, Pat Mahomes is a better quarterback.
It was a bad decision.
Pat Mahomes be the same quarterback had he not gone to Kansas City and learned from Alex Smith
and played for Andy Reid, who's great with quarterbacks?
Oh yeah, by the way, he had Tyree Kill.
A guy who has the strongest arm in the NFL has the one wide receiver that no one can overthrow.
And then you have Travis Kelsey who's always open.
And Sammy Watkins, who, you know, whatever you think about Sammy Watkins, he has tremendous
hands.
If he's your third or fourth best pass receiver, that's not bad.
So I watched Kyla Murray last night, and my takeaway was this.
I don't know if it's going to work, right?
No idea.
He's tiny.
He is really, really small.
And it's not just that he's small and the ability to see over the middle of the defense
because all of those throws were outs.
All of those throws were outside the pocket or, you know, short little outs.
He wasn't staring down to defense, standing up tall,
and firing that ball down the middle of the field.
that's the big challenge when you're small.
I don't know if he'll be able to take contact.
He likes to move.
He's 205 pounds.
He gets touched.
He's going down.
Don't know if they can touch him.
And it should be pointed out he's closer to the ground than other guys.
So maybe he doesn't hurt him as much as other guys.
But here's what I do know.
His head coach is a former quarterback who's had a relationship with Kyler since he was in high school.
That does in fact matter.
Additionally, the head coach ran the same offense when he was in college and understands the transition of going to the pros because he's been a pro himself.
And he understands this offense because he's coached in college.
He's coached it at different schools.
And he has the perfect quarterback who's run the offense previously.
The offense is perfect because it's designed for a team.
You can have a terrible offensive line.
as long as you get rid of it quickly,
and that's what this offense is designed for.
You can throw it instead of running it,
and they actually have really good wide receivers.
You got Christian Kirk on one side.
You got Larry Fitzgerald.
You got David Johnson.
You have a bunch of past catching threats.
You're playing indoors,
which makes your team faster,
which makes ball handling easier
because there's no inclement weather
for your quarterback who has a smaller person,
smaller hands, more likely to fumble.
Every box that is possibly checked in terms of the likelihood of something succeeding, right,
is checked for Kyla Murray.
It doesn't mean that it will work.
But you have a general manager who is all in.
Like, look, he just drafted a quarterback the year before and had to bail on him.
If this doesn't work, Steve Kime is out.
Out.
Cliff Kingsbury, this has to work for him.
He just got fired his alma mater.
Now he's in the pros.
it was a surprise hire if this doesn't work.
He's gone.
He's not going to be a head coach again.
He knows it.
They are completely invested in the player
and the player comes from a similar system
so there's not a lot of verbiage change.
It's only stepping up in level of competition
but you also have a higher level of support.
I'm not going to sit here and hot take it
and tell you if I think Kyla Murray makes it or doesn't make it.
He's going to get every possible opportunity
have the complete and undivided support of his general manager and of his head coach.
And his head coach, of course, has played the position and run the offense and has played in the pros and knows Kyler to a T because he coached against him.
And he recruited him since he was just a mighty mite in high school.
They're so all in that they didn't even mess around.
They got rid of Rosen.
They named the starter day one.
They even treated him like a starter, treated him like a returning star last night.
Most guys who were just getting their feet wet, they would have given him more reps.
Play him the whole first quarter.
Play him the whole first half.
Try to figure out, hey, this is NFL football.
It's faster.
Let's get you some more reps against the ones and the twos.
Maybe the threes of the other team.
They didn't do that.
They didn't treat him like he's a guy who's going to be a star.
They treat him like a guy who is a star.
Kyla Murray may make it, may not make it.
But he's found the perfect fit.
which in your job, in your relationship, in your life is really all you can hope for.
Because when you fit together, the bad times don't last as long and the good times seem to be more prominent.
It's just, it's incredibly important to find people that are not only bought in, but have lived your experience,
understand who you are, what you bring to your experience, and have the complete and right support.
Look, if he goes to a team that's built with a huge offensive line
that wants to run the football and keep him in the pocket,
I'm not sure this thing works.
But he goes to a team that's so desperate to be exciting,
so desperate to be watchable,
so desperate to find some different way of attacking the problem
of not just being good in the NFL, but being relevant in the NFL,
that they're willing to completely give themselves to the air raid offense.
What more could you ask for?
What I think, I think it looked pretty good.
Does that mean he'll be great?
Week 10?
Does that mean they're going to win the division?
I think not.
They can score some points?
Sure seems like it.
Can they stop anybody?
No idea.
Can they keep him upright?
We'll see.
How good is he long term?
I'm not going to hot take it after watching him throw, what was it,
seven passes last night for 44 yards?
But if it's ever going to work for a 5-10 quarterback who runs around,
has a big arm, and gets a chance to play in the NFL,
this is going to be it.
In life, it is important to know who you are and stay true to who you are.
That's why what I saw from the Cleveland Browns makes me think they know who they are.
That's next. I'm Doug Gottlieb. This is The Hurd.

Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing.
And we're still chasing it.
And we don't know when we've done enough.
Because people scoreboard watch.
Life becomes about wins and losses.
Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth.
Are you a good person because you're afraid?
Because that's two different intentions, bro.
Absolutely.
And that's two different levels of trust.
I want you to just really be a good person.

And on my podcast, The Cliverts Show,
I'm bringing you conversations about all kinds of stuff,
like being an internet famous referee.
We're in the middle of a game.
This linebacker, this linebacker walks up
to me, he goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her.
What?
Time out.
Quarterback on office blue of 42.
Hey, rep, my mama want you to wave at her.
What?
Hey, Miss Parker.

American soccer is about to explode.
The World Cup is coming.
Ramos sending on to earn a score at the chip.
I'm Tad Ramos.
I'm Tom Boe.
On our podcast, Inside American Soccer, you'll get the real storylines.
I'm not worried about Policic.
I'm not worried about Balagan.
I'm not worried about McKinney.
My only concern is what happens in the back.
The biggest decisions.
If you're going to look at stats and numbers, he has no shot at making this World Cup team.
And the truth about the U.S. national team.
It wouldn't be a huge surprise if our team ends up in the quarterfinals
or potentially a great run into the semifinals.
The World Cup is almost here.

What up?
Doug Gottlieb in for Colin.
This is The Herd on a Friday.
Carb Friday in the Herd Heard Prep Room.
We not only had the bagels that Colin claims to purchase.
He claims to purchase the bagels.
Is that true?
Does anybody know if that's true?
I can't confirm that he takes the bill.
I would say he gets them purchased for us.
So it's probably in the middle.
We don't pay for him.
He does foot that bill?
All right, that goes on Colin Cowherd's card.
That's, again, this is what's going.
There's multiple in my ear.
There's some thumb up, some thumb down.
I'm more skeptical than the people in your ear.
I am as well.
I am as well.
But there was also some who brought the Danishes today?
I mean, we just carved it up.
Was there some plain poss?
Is somebody running a marathon from back in like 1989?
We're doing bread bowls too?
Bread bowls of soup.
Carve Day with the herd.
I watched the Browns last night.
And I watched the Browns go no huddle.
And I felt like it was a bit much.
Right?
Like, do you really want to go no huddle?
You're not playing against all the ones from the other team.
You're playing against the Redskins who are at best.
in a transition year.
And I know the Redskins were in first place in the NFC East for a good portion of time
before they had both their top two quarterbacks break their legs last year.
But like, let's be honest, when we start talking about the great teams in the NFC,
no one starts with Redskins.
But you're taking on the Redskins last night.
You start running no huddle.
And then you're celebrating kind of like the women's national team was celebrating against,
who are they, Indonesia, right?
Against Thailand?
And don't get me wrong.
Baker was great.
And I'm a lot more in on.
on Baker, then Colin is in on Baker.
But it was interesting that they went no huddle, that they celebrated with such bravado.
And they did so, frankly, without OBJ, without Jarvis Landry.
Let's just go and just kind of overwhelm the Redskins.
Instead of, you would think, kind of working on some things.
Or maybe they were working on some things.
And then I saw Baker Mayfield doing the snapshot.
They were doing the, like walking down the catwalk, celebrating the touchdown pass.
And I started to realize this is who the Browns are.
They know who they are.
Is Baker-Mayfield over the top?
Yeah.
Yeah.
He grabbed his junk in college.
Sure.
He planted the flag at Ohio State Stadium in college.
But he's on brand.
But before the NFL draft, remember he did the picture of the Brett Farr picture, right?
Where he was in like a dorm room with an OU shirt on and a hat and jorts and on the phone.
he is a look at me guy.
He's like a pro wrestler come to life in a real, real sporting event.
If you just take one of these snapshots in your mind, you're like, eh, but now you factor it all together.
Go back to last week at the Cleveland Indians baseball game.
And they're taking on the angels.
And he bites into the beer can and he chugs it and he throws it down and he holds up the Lindor jersey.
Right?
This is who they are.
We're not the villains, but we're also not the victims or the Browns.
I talk about fit with Kyler Murray.
This guy fits with Cleveland, right?
Doesn't he?
He fits with Cleveland and they understand how to fit with him.
Well, let's go all in.
Let's just be the guys that don't care.
Everybody else cares too much.
Let's care too little.
Let's go out and have fun.
Why should we in preseason game?
We're going to go school, right?
why do we need to line up, go back to the huddle, line up, go back to the huddle.
Let's play it like you play Madden.
Just hold down the triangle at the end of every play so that you can run the same play over and over again.
Can't stop it.
Let's just go.
Let's go.
Let's get seven nothing.
And then let's celebrate.
Why not?
We're good.
We know we're good.
Let's have fun being good.
Why do we have to apologize for being good?
We didn't have to apologize.
Nobody apologized to us when we were really bad.
They made fun of us for being bad.
They won one game in two years.
They got off to a horrendous start last year.
They got off their soccer.
Now they're good.
Let's have fun being good.
I mean, even before the game last night,
Baker Mayfield's doing the air of the night,
Phil Collins,
you know, drum solo.
This is who he is.
This is who the Browns are.
You don't have to dig it.
I've heard Colin say,
I don't want my franchise quarterback doing this like,
okay, but guess what?
You don't always get a choice of,
Andrew Luck's not always available.
The only one on your luck.
you may not like how they roll, but it's Cleveland.
They've been irrelevant since they put the new franchise back in after their old franchise left.
Remember, everybody leaves Cleveland.
LeBron left twice.
The football team left before.
Go look at how many star baseball players started out their career in Cleveland and then C.C.
Perfect example.
They all, everybody leaves.
But Baker seems to kind of want to be there.
Baker sporting that mustache.
Baker, kind of our kind of guy.
He's not super tall,
not super ripped, not super good looking.
He was a walk-on, you know.
He didn't actually win the national championship.
He wasn't actually number one on most people's draft board.
Sam Darnell was, but there's something about him.
Something about him.
And the best way to get the most out of Baker
is to let Baker be Baker.
And they found a bunch of other guys
that like when Baker is Baker,
and they kind of have that same persona.
If you're offended by it, that's a you problem
because there's nothing in it that is offended.
Is it a little over the top?
Sure. Sure.
But other teams are over the top conservative.
Like, no, celebrate like we've been there before.
Like, okay.
Or let's just go have fun.
And it seems like that's where they're committed to doing.
We could do it the other way,
and it would be fine.
Or we could do it this way, and it would be fun.
It would be fun.
All right, we got a lot to get to.
Antonio Cromarty will join us upcoming.
Get his thoughts on our takeaways.
I know Sam Donald would play well last night.
Is there a quarterback controversy
with the New York Giants we got to get to?
But first, let's get to John Gullet with the news.
No, no, no, no.
Turn on the news.
This is the herd line news.
A little bit of breaking news this morning, Doug.
Woods has withdrawn from the Northern Trust due to an oblique strain.
He said in a statement, due to a mild oblique strain that led to pain and stiffness,
I have to withdraw from the Northern Trust.
I went for treatment early Friday morning.
But unfortunately, I'm still unable to compete.
He shot a 4 over 75 yesterday.
He's really struggled since winning the Masters,
and I feel like he's kind of stuck where if he plays a bunch, he can't stay healthy.
But when he doesn't play and he takes a lot of time,
off, he shows up for these tournaments, and he's just really rusty, right?
At the PGA, he was awful because he hadn't played since he basically did won the Masters.
Is it possible to think now that winning the Masters this year, that was it, that was the
pinnacle.
He had worked all this way to get back and he got it, and that's probably where it ends?
Maybe.
I mean, Jack's last win at 46 obviously didn't win again.
but I think if the idea is
now he really is only
super competitive at one or two majors a year
that would be reasonable
like look everything has to be aligned
everything has to be perfect
and the Masters Augusta is a place where he's played it so much
it does set up well to his game
I mean shouldn't I could make the argument
he should just focus on that every year right
that should be his tournament like that's where he needs to be
drive for that he's like he's one of those Spaniards
who only plays in the French Open
sure, right?
He's only good on clay courts.
He's only going to play the French Open.
Like, no, I don't know if I'd get, I'd go there yet.
But I do think that even the Tiger of, you know, four or five years ago,
when he dominated the tour with the exception of the majors,
like that's probably gone.
He put a lot into it.
But this is what happened.
And this is really an interesting kind of side note to the NFL is how is Tom Brady,
Drew Brees, Ben Rothesburg, or Philip Rivers.
How are they going to stand up?
It's not that they can't play over one game.
It's that they can't, can they play 19 games?
Well, right.
You know?
And all these guys have long starting streaks.
They don't want to sit for a game at all.
Right?
I don't want to sit a game, but maybe that's the best thing because your body does break down.
This is the natural aging process of a person.
What's Toby Keith saying?
I ain't as good as I once was, but I'm as good once as I ever.
was, that's Tiger Woods this year.
To the NFL, rookies,
Kyler Murray and Daniel Jones, who we'll talk about a little later,
looked really good in their preseason debuts.
One rookie that did not look so good,
Redskins quarterback, Dwayne Haskins,
8 of 14, 117 yards, but two interceptions.
It seems like the Redskins aren't in a rush to play him,
which is always what teams say
until they get to the season and start losing.
They're probably going to start Colt McCoy.
That excites nobody who didn't go to Texas.
Yes.
He's, remember, Haskins is the hometown kid.
I know he went to Ohio State, but he's from that area.
Yeah, from the DMV.
Right.
So the fans are going to want to see him.
They're probably not going to win early.
What are your thoughts on Haskins?
And even his head coach, right, Urban Meyer said he's probably not ready to be a franchise leader yet.
Yes.
But do you trust the Redskins to be able to actually wait?
I do.
I do only in that Bruce Allen has unique power.
Bruce Allen runs the business and football side.
There's no, there are no multiple heads like, right.
So, and I don't think Jay Gruden was necessarily in on this draft pick.
So he has to win right now.
So he does.
He does.
He has to win.
He, I think he even said, I need to make the playoffs.
I'm probably going to get fired.
Right.
It's tough to do with the rookie quarterback.
It's tough to do with the rookie.
It's not impossible.
It's not possible.
We done.
You have to have a really good team around him.
I think Colt McCoy is a starter and, you know, until they fall out of the playoff hunt.
Look, he has a big arm.
He obviously put up big numbers last year with Ohio State.
I'm not convinced he has great feet.
And great feet sometimes gets you in a bad position and you make bad throws.
And he's super young and inexperienced.
Because remember, they couldn't get off J.T. Barrett because J.T. Barrett was so much more experienced in Ohio State's offense for him.
But eventually he'll be the guy.
I think they're going to take it slow.
And I know everybody says they're going to take it slow and they don't, but I think they'll take it slow.
And finally, staying in the NFC East, Eagles quarterback Nate Sudfeld got the start last night with Carson Wentz sitting out and looked good until he left the game in an air cast.
Turns out he broke his wrist and his non-throwing arm.
Not season ending, but still a pretty big injury.
Considering Nick Foles is no longer there, this is probably the most paid attention to quarterback depth chart over the past couple years.
Foles is gone.
Wence has never really been able to stay healthy other than his rookie year, I believe.
this could end up being an issue.
Could it not?
Yeah, they don't have depth.
I mean, obviously, if Carson Wentz gets hurt season ender,
of course, everyone knows they'd be done.
But, you know, if you're going to be bringing in random guys to have to spot start if Carson One gets hurt,
I mean, Wence was hurt in college, he's been hurt in the NFL.
He doesn't say healthy, and now they might not have anyone to replace him.
You know, I thought it was funny.
I'm trying to think who was it yesterday who got Nick Bosa.
Nick Bosa sprained his ankle.
And they asked Kyle Shanahan if he was injury prone.
He's like, well, you know, like, look, he had the hernia last year in college,
but some huge human being fell on him.
That's how he's pretty.
That's not injury prone.
I would frankly say the same thing about Carson Wentz.
Like, I get that he tore his ACL diving into the end zone.
He got hit.
But he got hit.
But, like, he got hit when he broke the little thing in his back,
and he was still kind of playing through it last year.
So I don't know.
It's more if you have multiple.
soft tissue injuries.
You know, Sam Bradford was injury prone.
Sure.
Like, San Bradford ran out of bounds one time, stopped, and blew up his ACL.
Like, there's not a part of Sam Bradford's body that hasn't been surgically repaired.
Sure.
So I don't think it's as big an issue.
But I do think, you know, now all of a sudden you've got Clayton Thorson and you've got to go out in the market, find a, find a quarterback.
It's always interesting.
And that's John Gullet with the news.
Well, that's the news.
And thanks for stopping by.
The Hurd-Lie News.
Four-time pro bowler, play with the charges, the Jets, the Cardinals,
the Colts, he's Antonio Cromartier, or Crow, as he's known.
He joins us now in the herd.
What's going on.
It's not, man, it's good to watch football on TV, wasn't it?
Football is always good to watch.
Okay, so, like, you did this for 11 years in the NFL.
Yes.
What can we really, how much can we really take from last night?
Nothing.
All right, well, that was a good show.
Thanks, Crow.
Let's appreciate your analysis.
No, I mean, you can't really take anything from, you know,
what you see from the start is, I mean, it's just one series and out.
Yeah, but when you were, okay, so you're, like, let's say you're on the sideline, right?
Like, you get to be a star and you're watching guys.
You can tell if a guy can play or can't play, can't you?
You know that in practice.
You find that out easy in practice.
Once you put my pads on, you separate the boards from the man.
So, I mean, you find that out quickly.
But I think what everyone needs to understand, like, the preseason is a dress rehearsal.
First game is, let me get the quarterbacks on throws.
the defense figure out how we're going to communicate.
And that's it.
Everyone else is the younger guys that comes in and start the player.
So now you start to figure out who your backups is going to be,
who's on the bubble, you know, and who can possibly make the team.
That's, you know, that's what the precinct is really for.
You figure out who your guys are.
You already know who your starters are going to be.
But if you have somebody that's competing to become a starter
or being in a bubble or be in a rotation,
that person actually gets to go out and go play and perform.
and then if he does well, he makes a team.
All right, let me ask you about Kyla Murray.
He doesn't fit the measurements of a guy that's normally a starting star quarterback
in the National Football League.
But I started the show saying, like, look, I don't know if he's going to make it.
A lot of people like him, but he's got a coach who played in the same offense,
has known him since he's in high school, played in the NFL himself, younger guy can relate.
He's got a GM that's all in, a franchise that's all in.
And, like, honestly, the makeup of their team with a terrible.
offensive line doesn't hurt this style as much, not just because he's athletic, but because it's a
quick throw offense. And they have talent to throw. He's got David Johnson's a dump-off guy.
You know, he's got Christian Kirk. He's got Larry Fitzgerald. He's got some guys to get rid of the
ball quickly, too. I don't know if it'll work, but if it's going to work, this is the most
likely scenario. Do you think Kyle Murray succeeds? I think he does. I think he has success
in the NFL. He's going to have his bumps and bruises. That's what any rookie quarterback.
But I think what Cliff Kingsbury is going to try to do is make sure that he makes safe throws,
understand what the defense is giving them, and take advantage of that.
I think what they're going to try to do more of too is get him out of the pocket.
He throws the ball well on the run.
I mean, as you can see, I mean, he throws the ball well on the run.
And honestly, if I can stay in front of the sticks the whole entire time, going driving down the field,
I don't care if it's a 15-play drive and score, defense on the field the whole entire time.
Antonio Carmardi, join us in the herd.
I'm Doug Gottlie, pulling in for Colin.
The Browns get the win.
And, I mean, I don't even know.
Did they even win the game?
I've no idea.
Honestly, no way has any idea.
I know they got the ball and they marched right down the field and scored.
They went no huddle offense.
And they're celebrating and it's playing up their personalities.
They did win the game.
30 to 10.
Any issues with the Browns, not just running no huddle, but allowing all these
firsts.
It's a preseason, like, dude, it's a preseason game.
And they're celebrating as if they're going to the playoffs.
You have any issue?
No, I don't.
It's football.
we're, you know, we're entertainers once we get a chance to score.
And I don't have a problem with it.
But the only thing I do have a problem,
when you run around a two-minute offense,
hurry-up offense.
And the first game of the three season.
It was weird, right?
I've never seen it before.
You know, but that's the way they're going to run that offense like that,
that's the way they're going to run that offense.
But, you know, the whole thing is, you know,
football is all about having fun.
And they get a chance, we get a chance to celebrate now
in the league.
Yep.
Why not take advantage of it whenever you can?
I'm with you.
Daniel Jones has gone from why the hell
do we draft Daniel Jones to plays well after Eli's drive doesn't go well.
And there's a call.
Well, maybe there should be a quarterback controversy.
Is it time right now for the Giants to move on?
Let's just start over.
Let's go with Daniel Jones.
No, I think Daniel Jones can sit a year.
He still can learn some things.
Did he make some great throws?
Yes.
But some of those throws, if a good quarterback was there,
pick it off.
You know, and it's just the point of his understanding.
He's going to have growing pains.
He's going to go through the preseason.
He's going to get a chance and the opportunity to play more, play longer, you know,
and it's going to give him an opportunity to get more comfortable with the offense.
He's going to give him a chance to be able to go out and just go play ball.
You know, and I think there's no quarterback controversy.
Eli Man is a quarterback at the end of the day.
I think for Daniel Jones, he gets to sit a year.
Maybe next year he's a starting quarterback.
But I think it would do him some good.
to sit back, learn from Eli,
understand everything they're trying to do,
and then go from there.
Antonio Comardi, joining us in The Herd.
Tom Brady is, was he, 42 years old?
42.
42 years old.
At some point, there has to be a decline, right?
Like, he's a human being.
And I know his hair looks better.
Frankly, he's better looking than he used to be.
But at some point, like, look, every...
And I know that when you play, like, defensive back,
like you did, eventually your speed goes,
This is not a speed position.
But your legs can go.
Your arm can go.
Like at some point there's going to be decline, isn't there?
Well, this is always going to be declining something.
But I think from his mental aspects and the way he works itself,
he always challenges himself.
You know, he can go out and compete just when it's just him, you know,
going through his drill.
So I don't see a decline right now.
I think a lot of people are expecting him to decline,
but I think that's only motivation for him at the end of the day.
That motivates him the most.
If you're going to say, hey, you know, Tom Brady, you can't play anymore.
He's going to prove you wrong.
At some point, though, he won't be able to play anymore, right?
And there's no gronk this year.
There's no gronk this year.
No grunk.
But, you know, he has Ben Watson's there.
I mean, he's spending for four games.
But you get Ben Watson there.
He's not a grunk, but he's a guy that's going to be dependable that he can find.
He knows exactly where he's supposed to be.
So, I mean, it's not a point of just saying that he's,
going to decline, I don't see anything where that decline has shown.
It's not going to be like a Peyton Manning's where it went flat.
But that's what happens, though. It goes like that, where all of a sudden dudes just can't play.
Like, Peyton Manning went so bad. They're like, let's get Brock Osweller out there.
That's not.
And then they basically carried him to his last Super Bowl.
And look, as good as Brady was in spots, the last drive against the Rams, the last drive against the Chiefs.
for example, two touchdowns, three interceptions in the playoffs last.
You should have had a fourth interception against the Chiefs.
Like he wasn't Tom Brady, Tom Brady.
Yeah, we say it's not Tom Brady, Tom Brady.
But when you're in the playoffs, everybody knows where you're going.
They just take away some of those options.
That's all it is.
Take away the number one and number two options.
And let's say, can you beat us with three and four?
That's all it is.
And we understand that Tom Brady's, yes, he's getting old.
He's 42.
about, you know, 42 years old, he's been, where it's 20th season.
So, I mean, you don't expect him to play at a high level,
but he's the greatest of all time right now.
He has to.
The Cowboys, Zeke's the only one who's not in camp.
But now all of a sudden, you know,
you've got a suspension on the defensive side of the ball.
You know, you got a couple guys, you know,
Jalen Smith needs to get paid over there.
Byron Jones needs to get paid over there.
You got Mario Cooper needs to.
to get paid,
Dak needs to get paid,
Zique wants to get paid,
even though he's only entering
year four of what is
essentially a five-year guaranteed deal.
Is it,
and like,
look,
the Cowboys are a team
that we talk about a lot.
Yes.
But there are a lot of distractions.
There's reasons we're talking about them.
Are there too many distractions
for a really talented football team
to live up to their potential?
No,
I don't think there's too many distractions.
I think at the end of the day,
this is what people feel to realize.
This is a business.
No matter how we look at it is a business.
And business,
going to be taken care of at the time. Ownerships feel like it's the right time to take care of it,
not just because one person goes out and wants to hold out and costs itself $40,000 a day,
you know, or you have a quarterback situation, you know, but with a Murray Cooper. Everything,
they're there. They understand that their contract has to get done, but they're there because
they love the game of football. Not saying that Zeeke doesn't love it, but these guys want to
make sure that they're there for the team, for the contracts and get done. And I
think that's the way it needs to be handled. Yeah, show, you know, show your goodwill.
Yeah, you're just showing your goodwill. And this is what I always say, this is what I always say.
People always say, oh, you know, he could have an injury or something could happen. I always say
this. If it's in God's plan for you to have an injury, that injury is going to happen no matter what
goes on because that's already destined. It's already happening to happen. So don't say him like,
oh, you know, he can risk injury. He can not be, if it's going to happen, it's going to happen.
no matter how you try to skip it, come about it,
injury is going to happen.
No matter how you look at it.
Antonio Cromartie, four-time Pro Bowler,
11 years in the Nash Football League.
A ton of knowledge here.
Crow, thanks so much for joining us.
Appreciate it.
Thank you for having me all.
The Raiders are obviously not happy with Antonio Brown.
He can't play because of frostbite on his feet.
That's a new one, right?
Can't play frostbite.
But the real surprise is a problem for the Raiders
that might even shock you.
I'll share it with you.
Next.

and we don't know when we've done enough.
Because people scoreboard watch.
Life becomes about wins and losses.
Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth,

Absolutely.

The Oklahoma Raiders obviously are now stars of HBO's Hard Knocks.
Interesting.
They had huge numbers, huge numbers for the first of the series of Hard Knocks,
where it wasn't a lot to it, right?
There was John Gruden's totally prepared, very awkward speech about dreams
and not liking dreams, liking nightmares instead.
It was like, I don't know if that's what John Gruden did when he got in at 4 in the morning.
It made his chucky faces, but it was, I'm sure it sounded better in his head than it did coming out of his mouth than ending up on hard knocks.
There wasn't a lot to it, right?
There was some Antonio Brown stuff.
His kids were really cute.
Where's Rathurstberger?
Like, Daddy doesn't play for the Steelers anymore.
Where's Derek Carter?
It was amazing.
That part was probably the best part.
Probably the best part was the kids.
You throw kids in there and I'm cooked.
But take a listen to John Gruden.
This is yesterday, and he was asked about Antonio Brown's foot situation.
It's like waiting for Santa Claus.
I've been really excited to coach this man.
I think he's a great player and he's a great competitor.
And we need his life in this offense and on this football team.
So you hear him say things like that.
And I understand his frustration, John Gruden's frustration.
He's not only the head coach, kind of runs the whole thing.
Right? I mean, he's the one who hired Mike Mayock, but he greenlit this.
But John Gruden's an offensive coach, and he's his new toy.
Like, imagine if there's that one toy you dreamed of for Christmas and you put on your list
and you're a good kid and you sat on Santa's lap and you're like, look, you've got to have this toy.
This is the toy that I want to get.
And you were good all year and you finally got the toy.
And you get the toy and it says, batteries not included and Santa, or his elves, forgot the batteries.
It would be super, you're like, well, there's all these other toys.
Like, yes, but this was my toy.
This was the one that I wanted.
The other ones are cool, but this was the one that I wanted.
And we forgot to get the batteries?
That's this.
Like Antonio Brown, and it's one thing to get hurt tweaking a hamstring, you know,
it's one thing to jam a finger.
You got hurt at camp.
You got sick.
Like, these things happen.
They happen.
It's a human being.
Getting your feet frostbitten in a cryo chamber.
Like, that's a new one.
Because you didn't wear the proper footwear.
Cryo chamber.
Han didn't have any proper footwear.
Now, Han Solo was blind for a good portion of Return of the Jedi,
but his feet apparently were fine.
What was Han Solo wearing?
And get that.
Get that to Antonio Brown before he gets in the cryo chamber again.
But John Gruden's mad because this was his toy.
And maybe more importantly,
translated for you. I'm not mad that Antonio Brown's not playing and competing right now.
He'll be fine. One, he brings up the level of everybody on our field because he's a true
superstar. He's seen what it's like to be the best in his position, best in his field.
Tyrell Williams is our one right now. He becomes our two. It changed our whole offense.
But the whole reason for bringing in Antonio Brown is to figure out if Derek Carr is good enough.
Like Derek Carr building a house right next to John Gruden's house in Las Vegas
tells me that Derek Carr probably doesn't think he's good enough.
Right?
Because it's almost like sucking up to the teacher.
Everybody sees through it, including John Gruden.
But all right, all right, all right.
He's better than people give him credit.
He's tougher than people give him credit.
Let's give him Antonio Brown.
Let's give him Tyrell Williams.
We give him a star who can break through a double team.
and we'll see, can we get the most possibly out of him?
Is he good enough to keep?
But John Gruden can't even truly begin to evaluate his quarterback
because he doesn't have a star-wide receiver.
Can't truly evaluate.
And to people who want to point out that, well, the Raiders aren't going to be good anyway,
no one's disputing that.
They've been bad for 20 years.
They'd made playoffs once in 20 years.
Gruden comes back in and there's no magic pixie dusk.
You got to work your way out of bad contracts they did.
You got to work your way into draft picks they did.
And they had a couple of prime time assets.
And they got three first round draft picks out of those two assets who end up going to get paid.
You know, one got paid $90 million last year.
And I mean, I'm guessing Amari Cooper is going to get somewhere in the neighborhood of $17, $18 million a year.
I mean, Michael Thomas got 60 million essentially guaranteed over three.
It's 20 million a year.
Mari Cooper is going to be in that range.
And Antonio Brown's better.
They actually brought in a better player than Amari Cooper at a lower amount.
The guy who's more accomplished, just a complete workaholic.
But like, look at the Raiders in a fair light.
If it wasn't John Gruden coaching, and you're like, man, you've got to fix the Raiders,
he kind of got to start over and light a match.
And they did.
And now they're trying to figure out, is Derek Carr good enough?
We don't know. You know why? We don't have Antonio Brown.
Because Antonio Brown takes two guys off of the defense every time he lines out wide.
And if you can win 10 on 9, then you can play quarterback in the national football league.
And that's, it's really 9 on 9.
You take the quarterback out of because he's not a runner.
But 9 on 9 becomes, you know, more of an even game.
So Gruden's frustration and consternation over, I got to get Antonio Brown back, he's my guy, I got to get my, it's not just the feat or how it settles the offense, it's this year is about evaluating Derek Carr.
Is he good enough to get that one-way plane ticket to Las Vegas or does he get jettisoned elsewhere?
All right, coming up next.
What a change in New York.
What a change.
You guys remember the draft?
after the draft, everybody just crushing the Daniel Jones draft pick.
Dave Gettleman's an idiot.
He's lost his mind.
How could they do this?
Well, I give you one pre-season game,
and suddenly there's discussions over whether Daniel Jones should start right now.
We'll tell you what should happen next in the herd.
One more herd?
The herd streams 24 hours a day, seven days a week,
within the IHeart radio app.
Search herd to listen live or on demand whenever you live.
like. What up? Welcome in. This is The Herd, wherever you may be, and however you may be making
this part of your day. Thanks so much. I'm Doug Gottlieb in for Colin Cowherd on the IHeart
Radio app, Fox Sports Radio and FS2. Hope you're having a great, great day, ready for a spectacular
weekend. And someone was wrong on my TV last night, John Gullet. Someone was wrong. They were men
and helmets, shoulder pads, and they appear to be playing football.
Weird.
Weird.
Really weird.
Exciting, but weird.
And then something even stranger happened last night.
Okay.
I know life comes at you fast.
I got it.
But NFL draft time, the surprise pick of the first round,
the New York Giants with the six picks
select Daniel Jones
out of Duke
and from Colin
to Mel Kuiper Jr. to Todd McShay
to you pick the analyst
everybody was shocked by what
they saw. New York
hello
shocked by what they saw
Daniel Jones?
Who? You're like
excuse me?
Okay. And so he was not exactly given the red carpet treatment.
Dave Gettleman, the general manager of the Giants, who loves to talk and hear himself talk,
was the only one saying Daniel Jones was our guy and the Redskins were going to take him.
And so we hopped up and took him. The Redskins was like, nah, we weren't really going to take him.
Sike. Gotcha. Here you go.
So we go from that moment where Daniel Jones was,
You took him where?
You took him with what pick?
After passing on Sam Donald the year before?
Okay.
Sure.
Go for it.
He went from there to last night he played well.
And Eli did not.
So now there's discussions as to
and not if but when Daniel Jones should take over this year
and should, should it be right away.
So the little lower third of your television,
if you're watching an FS2,
as you go around the dial,
and there are other sports channels,
I'm not in denial of it.
And every sports channel has the,
they ask the question on there
so that if you're in the bar,
you're looking up,
you're trying to figure out
what they're talking about, right?
Is that called the Chiron?
Is that what that is?
For now, we'll call it the Chiron.
It's called the Chiron.
And the Chiron, you're going to see, do we have a quarterback controversy in New York?
Now, if you've been watching or paying attention to the Giants up until maybe like the last week,
you're actually laughing at this.
Maybe that's part of me inside.
I'm laughing because I pay attention to the Giants the whole time, not just what I saw last night.
That we went from, will this guy ever be a starting quarterback,
to will he be the starting quarterback this year?
Right?
That's what we are.
Will he be the starting quarterback this year?
Stunning.
Chris Carter, of course, the Hall of Famer.
He lives and works in New York City as he works on first things first.
He had this to say about why Daniel Jones won't be the starting quarterback for the Giants anytime soon.
To think that the Giants and anyone in the Giants organization is thinking this kid is going to start to
first half of the season. We are crazy. Eli Manning is the starter for the Giants. All right? We've been
trying to replace Eli for three years. And now they're desks, Eli should be replaced when the guy's
better than him. Right now, Daniel Jones is not better than him. And when he is, I'll call for
Eli's job and for Eli to sit down. Until then, it's just a rookie learning the system, played in his
first preseason game. Eli is light years better than him.
Eli is light years better than him.
Now, I don't know if Eli is still light years better than him
because Eli Manning hasn't been a particularly good quarterback
the past couple years, as most guys who normally age are.
It's not as good as his brother and his brother aged,
even though his brother had a lot more surgeries than he had.
And about this age and time,
his brother stopped having the ability to throw football.
It's not crazy to think that Eli's washed up.
But it is crazy how quickly things have turned,
how quickly the narrative changes, right?
we go from Daniel Jones,
what a joke to,
why don't we put Daniel Jones in now
and just live with some of the mistakes?
That's how overreactive we are.
Like if you thought it's just a regular season
because the NFL's regular season,
you'll have one game you'll watch.
You'll be like, wow, that team's good
and this team's terrible.
Then the next week, you'll be, it'll flip.
It's a week-to-week league.
And some of it's based upon matchups
and injuries and other things,
but it really is a week-to-week league.
But to go from Eli is our guy to, wait, maybe we should try this Daniel Jones thing.
The only way it happens with Daniel Jones is if he has to be light years better than Eli.
And he can only be light years better than Eli if Eli is atrocious.
And that will play out over time.
Remember, he's had injuries to his wide receivers, Eli.
His offensive line's never been good recently.
has not been good.
And so with that mind, eventually
this will handle itself.
This is like,
and I don't know how you guys do it with cars.
Goulet, you don't have to tell me the make and model of your car.
How old is your car?
Only one year.
Only a new car.
Yeah.
Still have the new car smell?
Yeah, I try to preserve it as long as I can.
Wow.
New car smell.
You have strict rule.
Nobody eating, nobody drinking your car?
Pretty much, yeah. Wow. Yeah, you're in no fun. No fun at all. But that's okay. I mean, it keeps the
resale value up. Some people, they change out cars every two or three years. Some people,
they drive their cars, you know, all right, 100,000 miles and I get a new car. Some people
drive their cars until they don't run anymore. Right? That's like accord owners. They go for like
three, 400,000 miles. Like, look, I'm just going to drive this thing until it stops. And when it stops,
I'll get out, I'll get an Uber, and then I'll go get another one.
Meanwhile, it cost me 20 grand, and I bought it 15 years ago, right?
Like, some people are like that, and that's apparently who the Giants are.
The Giants are going to run this thing into the ground, and when it's so painfully,
incredibly obvious, they will then go get a new one.
And they have the new one waiting.
They got an unspecial order.
He's a little bit more athletic.
You know, he played for the same college.
coach. Like, it all kind of makes sense.
He's going to grow
in to get his man muscles,
his man quarterback body,
and he'll be fine.
But if you
think benching Eli Manning is easy
after one preseason game,
remember they got ownership on board,
the general manager, and the head coach
on board, and they all got fired because
they sat Eli Manning for one game.
And the only reason they sat Eli Manning for one game
was because they wanted to pull him out
in the fourth quarter and he refused to be
pulled out in the fourth quarter. He said, look, if you want to pull me out in the third and fourth quarter,
just take me out for the game. They said, fine. Gino Smith started. Everybody got fired.
Everybody got fired. So in the car analogy, if they were going to try and get out of a lease
or get out of this car and they're going to lose money, everybody gets fired for trying to do the
right thing. That's what happened before. So now they're like, I'd fine. You know what? Just
run it in the ground. Completely running into the ground. And once you do so, we'll have a guy who's
ready. I mean, you'd have to think that Eli has to be as bad as Peyton Manning was in order
to get hooked. And how bad was Peyton Manning? Nine touchdown, 17 interceptions in his final year
as a starter. I believe he's the only human being alive has been benched for Brock Osweiler.
Like Paxton Lynch, was he a starter and he got hurt? Last year, Brock Osweller started, but that was
only after Ryan Taneyho got hurt. Peyton Manning, in arguably, one of the 10 greatest
quarterbacks in the history of the National Football League
got bench for Brock Oswald because he was old
and because he couldn't throw a football anymore.
It was that obvious.
That's the kind of obvious it has to be in order for
Daniel Jones to get a start.
All right, coming up next in The Hurt, I'm Doug Gottlie,

When I look at the landscape of the NBA,
it may sound weird.
But our love for the Clippers,
though it has no ends,
they might not be the best team in town.
I'll explain next. I'm Doug Gottlieb. This is The Hurt.

Dodgers, Astros, Yankees, right?
What else do I need to know?
Dodgers, Astros, Yankees.
Oh, angels cannot win a game.
Ech.
Seven game. Losing streak lost the Red Sox last night.
I apparently am the only human being in Los Angeles, who cares.
Secured your guys are like, ah, going Dodger game.
One's going today. One's going tomorrow.
Like, thank you for pouring salt into the wound.
Doyers look good, though.
we'll see about that bullpen.
Bryce Harper, 132 strikeouts.
132 strikeouts.
But the Nats, his former team, 61 and 53.
That's kind of surprising.
Anyway.
Saw this from Jason Kidd.
So Jason Kidd has spoken.
People think that Jason Kidd's like,
every time Frank Vogel gets up,
Frank Vogel is going to have to have like the backup camera always on.
what do we do before the backup camera?
Right?
In the world's greatest inventions,
we always say like,
oh, it's the greatest invention since sliced bread.
But now, since many of us don't eat bread,
why don't we change the expression?
It's the greatest invention since the backup camera.
Right?
Like, you get in a car and you don't have a backup camera,
you're like, wait, hold on, I got to do this.
Oh, my neck.
My neck even doing, am I an hour?
Oh, moving around left, moving around to the right.
The backup camera is the greatest invention ever, and I will hear nothing.
Now, you're not technically supposed to just simply stare at the backup camera like an old lady like, oh, I got to avoid that.
But that's what we all do.
Actually, what we do is we got our cell phone in one hand and the backup camera and the other,
and we're tweeting and texting and backing up and hoping we don't hit something.
The funny part about the backup camera and the sensors we have now in our cars,
how many of you have a car that has those sensors?
And you get annoyed because they're a little overreactive.
Like you have a computer that actually gives you a heads up that you might hit something
and you are the one who gets mad.
Anyway, backup camera.
So Jason Kidd, who we haven't heard from since we thought for sure,
he was stabbing Frank Vogel in the back, right?
Like any time he goes up, anytime Frank Vogel gets a pat on the back from Jason Kidd,
he's feeling for blood somewhere on his back.
But the Hall of Famer said, quote, when you talk about Anthony Davis,
he can put the ball on the floor, he can pass, we all know he can shoot the three.
He can post up, defensively block shots, rebound.
He has a total package, which is why he's one of the best players in the world.
So for us to have him with LeBron, Coos, and Rondo, and how'd Rondo make this list?
It just makes it that much easier.
This would be the first time, his first time playing with someone like LeBron.
Well, duh.
There's the Captain Obvious, someone like LeBron.
He's been on bad teams.
Now he's in the team with the guy who's been the best player in the league for a good portion of years.
I do think that this is how most people view Anthony Davis as a top five NBA star,
only we haven't seen him be a top five NBA star,
because in addition to being a small market and not having the best management
and all the other issues that worked against the Pelicans,
they would have injuries any time they got to the playoffs as well.
And Anthony Davis had to evolve.
Look, he was really young and had to really change and fix
and work on his offensive game and become a shooter.
Like when they first made the play,
playoffs. This is a, here's a little factoid. Do you know the only time that Oklahoma City didn't make the playoffs in the last decade?
It was the, the Pelicans made it instead of them. It was like five years ago. And I was the, it was Scotty Brooks's last year. Kevin Durant missed 51 games.
And they missed it because Anthony Davis made a three, I think on Christmas Day, in Oklahoma City. It was his only three point shot made of the year. That's it.
So he's gone from that being, you know, a mid-30s three-point shooter.
And by the way, every player, I believe, on the Lakers is a plus 30% plus three-point shooter.
So now the sudden you've gone from that to being able to shoot, handle the basketball,
versus so he's always been great defensively.
He's a good passer.
He's viewed in league circles as a top five player.
Now, NBA league circles, top five players has, when you say top five players,
somehow there's 10 guys in the top five.
like, well, you got KD, but he's hurt, and he got LeBron, but he was hurt, and he got Anthony Davis, and he got Steph.
He's starting to, I got James Harden, you got Janice.
Like, well, you're at six.
How do you have, trust me, they're all top five.
But Anthony Davis is in that group.
And what's maybe most interesting is, though the clippers are huge winners, and I'm not trying to diminish what the clippers have done.
You hire a tremendous management team.
You have a sitting head coach who's been an NBA team.
champion. You establish a remarkable culture of guys that other people have passed on or moved away,
like the Houston Rockets, who made that trade for Chris Paul. And you build a culture. You have a quality
coach. You have great front office work. And you have an owner who wants to build his own arena,
going to build new practice facility. Like everybody's kind of all in, all pulling the same direction.
And if you grew up in L.A., and I grew up in Southern California, Orange County,
It's the county south of Los Angeles County.
The idea that anyone, let alone two-star players would pick the clippers over the Lakers,
sounds like the beginning of a joke that ends with a very funny punchline.
But it is not.
It is not.
All that said,
Anthony Davis or Paul George.
Anthony Davis.
LeBron James or Kauai Leonard.
This one's hard because LeBron wasn't his old.
LeBron's self last year. Statistically
it was great. He's not the same.
But LeBron's done it for longer
and better.
And then you look at the ancillary parts
and Kyle Coosma's coming into his own.
Like that's 75 points
to start every game.
Kyle Coosma,
LeBron James, Anthony Davis. You're starting with 75
points. Starting
with it. Then you had
in Danny Green who didn't shoot well in the playoffs
but had a great year shooting the ball
and doesn't need the basketball.
ball. So I look at the Lakers and I think they bring back some guys that have been through it
with the Lakers so they don't have complete turnover, just like the Clippers. And while they don't
have the culture of the Clippers, they have LeBron back, they have Anthony Davis who's hungry to
win. They have Kyle Kuzma. Like, they're the co-champions to win this thing. LeBron's got to
stay healthy. He's got to show that he can be lighter on his feet. He has lost weight.
But I kind of think what Jason Kidd's saying is,
don't you people understand how good Anthony Davis is?
Like, look, Paul George has had multiple shoulder surgeries now,
and he's a good player.
He's not viewed as a top five player in the league.
Anthony Davis is.
And that's what J.Kid's saying.
Let's get to John Gulea with the news.
No, no, no, no.
Turn on the news.
This is the herd line news.
So we may have some breaking Antonio Brown news.
It's just a report, but according to Chase Williams of WPXI in Pittsburgh,
Antonio Brown has gone radio silent on the Raiders.
That means that they don't know where he is or how the injury is doing.
Again, just through a Pittsburgh report, but kind of interesting.
Now, that could be because Antonio Brown feels really dumb for injuring himself in a cryo chamber
because he forgot to put socks on.
I mean, like, look, let's look at the positive side.
At least he covered up another area of your body that you wouldn't want to have.
have frostbid.
Right?
Or that could show where his priorities lie.
As you said earlier,
all of our priorities should lie there, right?
That's not a bad thing.
As you said earlier, Gruden seems a little frustrated that Brown isn't around.
Maybe because he's an offensive coach and he wants his new toy.
Let's listen to Gruden talking about if he had gotten any update on Antonio Brown.
Crank this thing up for me.
He's still gathering.
I don't have any information other than that.
You have the prospect?
Is that the accurate report?
Like I said, I'm not going to get into the exact nature of the feat.
I'm just not.
When you hear that and you hear that Antonio Brown isn't in communication with them,
it makes you think that maybe there is some truth to this report
because he certainly doesn't seem to want to talk about it.
Now, either he's not volunteering the information or he doesn't have it himself.
What do you make of it?
I mean, I have no idea.
I actually don't think it's the craziest thing that his radio silence, right?
Like, he went to a specialist, and he's freaking out because he can't believe he did it to himself.
Very possible.
Right.
It's also possible.
Self-inflicted wounds hurt a lot worse.
Right.
They just do.
They just do.
Now, it's actually not that way with, like, pinching.
Like, you pinch yourself, it doesn't hurt somebody else pinched.
You're like, hey, what are you doing pinched me?
But true wounds, I think, emotional.
I guess maybe the emotional pain is greater.
When you hurt somebody or you hurt yourself, that hurts a lot worse than when somebody
hurts you.
Is it possible HBO leaked this rumor?
Because we're going to find out, right?
If he's not on the next three episodes of Hard Knocks, we're going to know, yeah, he's
probably not talking to them.
Like we have cameras in the room here.
What's crazy about it is, like he, though he, like Hard Knocks, the video of him
running you're watching now, if you're watching on FS2, is that,
him running routes on hard knocks.
And their whole thing was, like, they gave him a clearance to go, and he went, and he probably
did too much.
So.
Antonio Brown very much wanted you to know that when he practices, it's 100% all the time.
Yes.
That was very clear through his statements.
When I go, I go 100.
Right.
I go 100.
And Moticon 100.
Right?
Moticon 100 is better than normal 100.
Doug, do you know what 2013 was for the Dallas Cowboys?
2014 was DeMarco Murray
Right that was the DeMarco Murray year
You're not going to guess this
Okay go ahead
You're Dallas Cowboys fan go
Well 2013 was the last time
The Cowboys didn't have an important
Defensive player suspended
I like that
It's a long time
2014 Orlando Scandrick
2015 Rolando Maclean
2016 DeMarcus Lawrence
And 17 and 18
David Irving and both of them
Randy Gregory I believe hasn't been suspended yet
But that's probably coming
And if not he'll do something
reinstated. He's got to imply for reinstate it.
It's a whole thing. Well, either way,
this year, they already had someone
suspended yesterday.
Defensive and Robert Quinn suspended two games
for violating the performance-enhancing
substance policy.
The Cowboys traded for Quinn this offseason.
It was done when they were negotiating
a long-term deal with DeMarcus Lawrence.
So it may have been more of a
just in case we can't get a deal.
Let's bring somebody in. So he's not a
crucial member of the defense.
And he's not healthy, so he probably wouldn't play the
first two games anyway. Sure, but this is a team that considers themselves Super Bowl contenders.
So anytime you're losing guys like this early or in the off season, that's obviously not
great. What does this say to you about the Cowboys? Well, it reminds me of, remember when Steve
Spurrier was out South Carolina. And one year, they'd always played Georgia early in the year.
And one year they did not. And they asked them about not playing George in the middle of the year.
And he said, well, we like to play Georgia early year because they always have to play Georgia early in the year.
because they always have got suspended.
Right?
And everybody laughed and won at Steve Spurrier.
He's in the Spurrier zone.
He can kind of say what he wants.
But he was also right.
He also, if you said like, hey, every year, George has somebody suspended.
When Mark Rick was there, that was true.
Yeah.
Same thing with Dallas Cowboys.
So it just, it's on brand, on brand for the Cowboys.
It's North Dallas 40.
It's who they are.
I mean, the idea that any other team,
Ezekieliot goes and meets with the commissioner,
to beg his way out of getting suspended for, you know, kind of big dog in that security guard in Las Vegas.
He comes back and no chance he asked for not just a contract extension, but a massive raise.
The Cowboys, this is kind of how they roll.
Sure.
Right?
This is very much, very much on brand.
I also, I actually think this might change.
A lot of those earlier suspensions and a lot of problems with the Cowboys came from,
they didn't handle their cap well, and they had to take chances on a lot of guys because they just simply didn't have enough talent.
on their team.
I would argue that's no longer the case.
That was the case five years ago.
Right, but that's also, that was the Bengals thing, right?
The Bengals of Pack Van Jones, the Bengals with Vantes Burrfect, whatever.
Well, they were draft guys in the draft that had slipped because they had off the field.
Michael Johnson out of Georgia Tech was a first round guy, went in the third round.
They would draft guys that had slipped because of off-the-field stuff.
And it shouldn't shock them when the off-the-field stuff becomes part of the reality.
Cowboys did that. Remember, Pacman was one of theirs.
They had to, you know, a lot of their, now they've since changed that, right?
They would draft, like, they drafted Jalen Smith who fell because of an injury, who's a great guy.
Right.
I feel like that it's a little bit of the Jerry used to have total control, and now Stephen Jones has a little bit of control.
And that's the shift.
It's kind of funny to me, though, that they still have guys getting suspended.
Hey, listen, John Dorsey, you know, he was Tyree Kill when he was in Kansas City.
Now he's in Cleveland, and they, of course, went after, um,
What's his name?
We came over from...
Kareem Hunt.
Kareem Hunt.
You know, he takes some chances.
And Kansas City, they take chances.
You know, they went and got...
What's his name?
From Seattle.
Frank Clark from Seattle.
Yeah, I'm like, you're going to get Frank Clark from Seattle when you just had the Kareem Hunt deal
and you got the Tyree Kiel thing?
But that's how they...
Sometimes the guys are so talented, they take chances.
And that's John Gulee with the news.
Well, that's the news.
And thanks for stopping by.
The Herd Line News.
You know, let's bring in with the Herd Satellite Network.
Danny Canell joins us, of course, former NFL quarterback, former Florida State star,
and you can see his show on the bench with Danny Cannell and Rajah Bell on CBSSports.com.
He joins us now in The Herd.
And, D.K., thanks so much for spending some time with this.
Like, look, Kyla Murray look good.
A lot of stuff kind of.
Outside the hashes, I don't know about throwing over the middle, but he did look
competent and he did look comfortable, and that offense moved and moved quickly.
What do you think the likelihood of success this year is for Kyler Murray?
Pretty good.
I mean, Doug, you got to consider that the expectation on rookie quarterback in 2019 is that they
should play pretty decent.
Now, are they going to put up numbers like Patrick Mahomes did in his second year?
50 touchdowns, no, but you've seen a trend where there have been better numbers.
I mean, Baker Mayfield had outstanding rookie season, 27 touchdowns.
It's a rookie NFL record.
That's great.
And that was an awesome season.
But it is kind of becoming the norm.
Pass happy offenses.
You're going to see Kyler Murray playing in a system that Cliff Kingsbury is going to design specifically for his skill set.
And as you just mentioned, getting him outside, moving around outside the pocket, getting it out of his hands quick, utilizing his legs a little bit.
Where I do think the expectation for Kyle Murray would be a solid.
solid individual season.
Now, he's going to have a lot of, you know,
three or four interception games.
He's going to make some critical mistakes.
They're probably not going to be a very good football team.
But statistically, I think Kyle Murray will have a pretty productive year
with Cliff Kingsbury system.
Any issue with the Browns?
Like the Browns last night, they came out,
they went no huddle in March right down the field.
I thought it was a little weird, right?
I thought it was a little weird.
But on some level, D.K., I just thought this is kind of the Browns.
like, hey, you know what, let's just rip it.
Let's just go and have fun and
let's be the team that doesn't care.
Throw conventional wisdom to the wind.
Then, of course, they celebrate.
And I know they're doing without OBJ and without
Jarvis Landry last night.
Any negative
with Cleveland and their personalities
and how they're handling things?
So to start it off, Dougie, I think last night was an
outstanding performance for them. Obviously, they
looked like they had been, you know,
without issue all off.
season looked like everybody had full attendance and offseason OTAs and everything just
look great. And that's what you should. Rinkling in the no huddle and going up temp. So I thought
every team usually experiments a little bit. Hey, why don't we try this in the preseason? If it succeeds,
great. Maybe we'll use it an even better opposing teams that we're going to see throughout
the season and see the capability of it. So now they have to prepare for it. Right. So that was a big
reason the Brown probably ran that up tempo. And it worked awesome. Nobody's expecting that to, you know,
kick off the game, your opening drive and preseason. And you could tell that when they just marched
up and down the field. I do have my reservations on this Brown team. And I've kind of flip-flop.
When they made the trade for Odell Beckham, I was all in saying, this is so much talent on
this team. They're going to be challenged for the Super Bowl. I've backed off a little bit. I'm
concerned about the amount of heights that's coming in for a team that is extremely, extremely
immature. They're immature at head coach. And it's not even, you know, personality-wise. It's NFL years-wise.
Freddie Kitchens is in his first year as head coach. So there's going to be immaturity issues.
Like when he calls out guys publicly. Like when he goes out and really makes the strong statement
about the leaks. And if anybody messes it up, I'm going to fire him. I thought that was unnecessary.
Like it had me wondering, uh-oh, are there leaks? Is this a problem? So I thought that was an immature
rookie head coach move. You've got a second-year quarterback who already has,
struggles with maturity issues, learning how to deal with media, learning how to deal with his
stardom, you know, he's still immature. Odell Beckham, even though he is a veteran in the league,
he's still extremely immature with how he deals with the media, how he handles controversy,
how he handles himself on the field. And now when you trade away Duke Johnson, you've got just
a second year running back and Nick Chubb, who's going to carry the workload as far as under,
you know, from the running back position, it's an extremely immature team. Now,
If everything goes great, they'll be awesome.
Like, you know, if they can play like they did last night, you won't hear a peep out
of anybody, there's the ball spread around, it's great.
But what happens, Doug, when they lose two games in a row?
Or Baker Mayfield throws four picks.
Or Odell Beckham has zero receptions and only two targets.
What happens then is the big question mark for me.
If they're able to handle it, they'll be fine.
If some of these personality quirks show up, then it could be a,
disaster in the making. Danny Cannell, joining us former NFL quarterback to cbsports.com,
as we can see, he's on the bench show with Rajah Bell on a daily basis.
Oh, off the bench. Sorry, not on the bench. Off the bench. My bad, D.K.
Last night, Eli struggles in his drive, and suddenly Daniel Jones, who no one wanted the Giants
to draft is he's the Messiah, right? He is, let's make a quarterback change now.
How do you think the Giants should handle this?
It's funny, Doug, how things work.
I was going to say it's the ebbs and flows of media coverage, but it's so much more than that.
It is the peaks and valleys.
It's the mountaintops in the desert.
They're no real in between.
And that's really what you saw unfolding last night.
Like going into last night's game, Giants fans booed Daniel Jones at a Yankees game before he had even attempted a pass.
Right?
They're thinking, we made a massive mistake.
We picked him in the sixth overall pick.
I can't believe we passed on Dwayne Haskin.
They're ready to throw in the towel.
They're mocking him.
He's become the punching bag for every joke.
You know, they have viral videos of him at practice, missing a throw.
And it's like, here's a glimpse of the giant future.
Ha, ha, see you, Gettleman.
Like, it just become the laughing stock almost.
And Daniel Jones hadn't even attempted a pass.
So I felt bad for him.
And then last night, I thought it was really a strong first impression,
which he desperately needed to make for the Giants fan base,
which has been so critical of this move.
And I'm happy for him from that standpoint.
But again, you talk about the mountaintops and the valleys.
Here we are all of a sudden already christening him ready to take over week one from
Eli Manning.
Like I love fans.
They're fanatics.
They're help us make a living or how you make a paycheck as a player.
Yep.
But can we get a little bit of reality and can we get a little bit of a sense of the
entire situation instead of just the knee-jerk reaction?
It was just the preseason.
It was awesome.
Good for him, but it's not the end of the Eli Manning era just yet.
The Giants won't make that decision.
Even if Eli looked bad for two or three more preseason games,
I still think they're rolling out Eli Manning, week one,
and probably the majority of the season.
It's got to be so obvious, right?
It's just got to be like he can't play anymore before Daniel Jones gets a legit shot.
And you know this, Doug.
You know this more than anybody.
And it's the same in other sports, whether it's NBA preseason,
whether it's spring training baseball or NFL preseason.
season, you are getting the most basic plays in the playbook that you know like the back of your
hand, right? You can say those, they're very simple. The formations aren't very complex. The route
combinations aren't real complex. Your progression is going to be really simple. You're going to get it
out quick. Defensively, you're going to probably see three different coverages and they're not going
to blitz a ton and they're going to keep it based. You should look good. Like you should practice
well in a preseason game. Like you have to take everything with a grain of
And yet that's not what people do.
They want to, you know, oh my gosh,
the best performance ever.
I was really good in the preseason, Doug.
I might have been Hall of Fame or if they would have kept my stats in the preseason.
That should give you an indication in itself that it does not translate to an NFL successful career.
Tom Brady's 42 years old.
And look, there were times late in the year where he didn't look great.
And I'm just wondering, like, I'm not going Max Kellerman and saying off a cliff like he did three years ago.
But I'm also reasonable think he's a human being.
At some point there's going to be a decline.
And he and Drew Breez have kind of the same contract where basically they're free agents at the end of the year.
At what point should we expect to see some sort of decline from the most successful and maybe arguably greatest quarterback of all time?
Man, you would think that it's got to be happening right now, right?
I mean, you would think you've already seen it.
I will say there was a slight drop off last year, especially statistically with Tom Brady.
When you look at some of his career numbers, starting to see a little bit of it.
But the best part about it is, and he's not putting up the obnoxious numbers that Patrick Mahomes is putting up.
Or even Drew Breeze.
Drew Grease completing 74% of his passes is insane.
But the thing is, Brady doesn't have to put up those numbers because the division they play in.
The AF to East might be the worst division in the entire NFL.
So they can kind of go out there, manage game.
It wasn't pretty last year.
They didn't have a great December.
Just give them a seat at the table in the playoffs.
I'll Bill Belichick and Tom Brady want.
And when they do that, then it's anybody's game.
Then you can rely on Tom Brady and you only need to do it for three or four games.
Then you can rely on them.
But as far as the cliff, I don't think there's going to be a cliff.
I think Tom Brady is smart enough where if he felt he was starting to drive,
off significantly, he would hang it up. But I will say this, doesn't 20 seem like a nice round
number? Like this is his 20th year. He got the one-year extension. His house is on the market.
You know, it just feels like that would be a great send-off. And yet he's done things that have
astounded me the past five years, past decade. So it shouldn't surprise anybody if he played until
he's 45, which he said he wants to do. You and me and Rasillo going to put in and buy that place?
It's only like $43 million or so.
Riscilla just got a new deal.
Like we, no reason.
If the split is Rissillo picks up 90% and you and I get 5% each, then we'll do it.
Let's do it.
I'm in.
Hey, that digital radio money is big, big, big, big, big, big.
That's right.
DK, great stuff, man.
Look forward to seeing in your show.
Thanks so much, contributed to ours.
Appreciate being our guest in the herd.
Always, Doug.
Have a great weekend.
You too.

Broncos off the bench with Braja Bell and CBS Sports HQ.
Between Ezekieli's holdout and another suspension, the defensive side of the ball,
are the Cowboys turning into a disaster?
I'll tell you why I don't think so.
Next.

What's up, fam? It's Isaiah Thomas.
And I'm C.J. Toledano, and our podcast Point Game is about defying the odds.
Like LeBron heading into the playoffs without Luca and Austin Reed.
And finding ways to,
win no matter what. He's the smartest player to ever play the game. His IQ is at a level that we've

We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs. I think Joker's going to be

Nas Reid. He has to guard Julius Randall. And then he has to give us everything he gives
us on the night-to-night basis on offense. And when IT's friends stop by, like,
Whitney Richardson, we dive into some playoff history too.
Steve Nash would get that thing.
That man, hell get the flying.
He running up the court, licking his fingers why he got the ball.
Like, you go through a training camp with that, Isaiah.
You figure it out real quick.
Get your ass up and down the court, and you're going to get the ball.
So listen to Point Game on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Doug Ghalyman for calling this is the herd.
Iheart Radio, Fox Sports Radio, and FS2.
I was bringing this article and I shared it on my show.
My show is the Doug Gottlieb show.
I know, and the name's not great, right?
What can I do?
Anyway, it follows this show, 3 to 6 Eastern Time, 12 to 3 Pacific.
You can, it's actually on the same satellite radio channel as the Dan Patrick show.
I don't know.
But maybe on the Fox 1 today because there's no, there's like junior NBA or something on Fox Sports 1 today.
Anyway, so you can listen to do on satellite radio as well.
you can download the All Ball podcast and the HARD Podcast Network or download my pod daily.
Anyway, we talked about this article.
It's five common mental errors that sway you from making good decisions.
And I saw this.
This was number three and it was really good.
So stick with me for a second.
It's called the availability heuristic.
It refers to common mistake that our brains make by assuming that the examples which come to mind easily are also the most important or prevalent things.
for example, research by Steve Pinker at Harvard University has shown that we are currently living
in the least violent time in history.
Least violent time in history.
More people living in peace than ever before.
The rates of homicide, rape, sexual assault, child abuse are all falling.
Most people are shocked.
When you heard that, were you surprised?
Were you shocked by what you heard?
Some people refuse to believe them.
If this is the most peaceful time in history, why every,
time do I turn the news, do I hear about all these terrible incidents? The answer is we're not only
living in the most peaceful time in history, but we're also living in the most reported time in
history. We overvalue and overestimate the impact of things that we can remember and undervalue
and underestimate the prevalence of events that we hear nothing about. This is called the
availability heuristic. Brings me to the Dallas Cowboys. Man, it feels. It feels. It feels
like the Dallas Cowboys are a mess.
Got another Cowboys suspended.
Got Zeke Elliott holding out.
Got Amari Cooper wants a contract.
Dak Prescott wants a new contract.
Byron Jones needs a new contract.
Galen Smith needs a new contract.
Jerry Jones is in front of the media every day.
Stephen Jones having to clean up his dad's messes.
Jason Garrett on the hot seat.
New offensive coordinator.
Man, the Cowboys are a mess.
Or we and the Cowboys are a mess.
the media, cover the Cowboys more so than we cover any team.
And you as fans love hearing about the mess that is the Cowboys.
In news media, it's if it bleeds, it leads, right?
In TV, you play, just like FM radio, you play the hits.
You like the Cowboys, we cover the Cowboys more, we cover the Cowboys more, you want
more of the Cowboys, there's a story, it gets made bigger.
I can tell you, the Chargers, I think, have better talent, have better talent than the Dallas Cowboys.
The L.A. Chargers have better talent. They got two dynamic rush ends. Two, Melvin Ingram, Joey Bosa.
They have Derwin James, one of the elite young players in the NFL. They have Michael Williams to go along with Keenan Allen, Hunter Henry as their tight end, and Philip Rivers.
they have a running back holding out.
We have discussed it, but not that much.
Now, he's not as good as Zeke Elliott, but it's a better football team.
They won 12 games last year.
They tied for the best record in the AFC.
Beat the Baltimore Ravens on the road.
Lost obviously the New England Patriots.
Why is that?
Well, the Cowboys are more popular.
We cover the Cowboys more.
The Texans don't even have a GM.
Don't have a gentleman.
The Texans won more games than the Cowboys in the same state in technically a bigger market.
Houston is the number four market in the country.
They won more games.
They have a quarterback who's of same age and yet is better.
He's better than Dak Prescott.
No one really argues, of course.
He had a terrible ACL injury in college and then another one here in the pros.
They won 11 games last season.
They just traded for Duke Johnson, who was the third running back with the Browns.
He didn't want to be there.
They didn't want him there.
and maybe because they don't have a general manager,
they gave up a fourth, which will probably be a third,
for a running back who you should have been able to get them for a sixth or a seventh.
We don't talk about the Texans.
They're like a team that doesn't exist.
They have Newk Hopkins, one of the best wide receivers.
Of course, they got Captain America and J.J. Watt.
Heck, they have former number one overall pick who they haven't given a contract extension to.
Right?
We cover the Cowboys.
the Cowboys feel like it's mass chaos and we cover them that much because you want it
and because you hear it covered so much more often.
We overvalue and overestimate the impact of things that we can remember and undervalue
and underestimate the prevalence of events that we hear nothing about.
There's a whole league out there.
The Cowboys are just one of 32.
Tom Brady is on the decline and it's not a bad thing.
I'll explain next in the herd.
One more herd?
The herd streams 20.
four hours a day, seven days a week within the IHeart radio app.
Search Herd to listen live or on demand whenever you'd like.
What up? Welcome in. This is the herd, wherever you may be.
And however you may be making this part of your day, thanks so much. I'm Doug Gottlie,
filling in for Colin Cowherd, live from Los Angeles on Fox Sports 2.
IHeart Radio app, Fox Sports Radio. Welcome in.
Hope you ready for a great weekend. No, there was nothing wrong with your TV.
You were watching professional football on television last night.
Huh?
Yeah.
Uh?
And the team that is defending champions, again, again.
You know, there's a lot of crazy things about Tom Brady.
But the fact that he's played long enough to compete in, what is it, eight soups?
or there's nine Super Bowls.
I totally lost track.
I know he's won six.
Lost to the Giants twice.
And who else they lose to?
The Eagles, right?
So he'd been nine.
He's played in nine Super Bowls and he went a decade without winning one.
Crazier fun fact is his best season where they won 18 in a row only to lose to the Giants.
He didn't play the next year because the ACL injury.
So like we actually probably missed out on Peak Tom Brady with his best foot.
football team. Another year with Randy Moss when they're at the in their prime. That's nuts to think
about. What's also nuts to think about is that Tom Brady won't at some point in the future
suffer decline. And look, others have predicted it and they've said, you know, was it Max Kellerman
who said he'll go off a cliff? That was three years ago. I meant next year. I meant next year.
You don't know when the cliff is coming.
And this is one of those optical illusions.
And the NFL has, they put in the Tom Brady rule where you can't hit anybody below the knee, right?
And they frankly have the rule now you can't hit anybody above the neck.
Can't touch wide receivers beyond five yards down the field.
He's more protected than ever.
He takes care of himself better than ever.
Hell, Tom Brady's hair looks better than ever.
I have my suspicions.
His teeth look great.
Like that dude, I bet even smells good.
But he's still 42 years old.
And unless you're taking a performance enhancer, and I don't think he is,
he's still 42 years old.
So as much as the NFL can elongate the runs of Brady, Breeze,
Rothersberger, Rivers, Eli, eventually,
Father Time catches up and catches up in a hurry.
It's like all the sudden you just can't play.
You just can't get out of bed the same in the morning.
It's not a gradual decline thing.
It's not like baseball where your stats, you know,
one year you're hitting 300, the next year, 290, then 275,
then, you know, 30 home runs and 20 home runs and 15 home runs.
Like, no, it's, in most sports, it's basically all of a sudden you can't hit.
Jason, kid in the playoffs, could make a layup.
Could make a layup.
And in the NFL, I mean, the greatest example of that I can remember is,
do you guys remember when Ray Lewis came back for the Super Bowl where they beat the 49ers?
Ray Lewis's last game in the NFL.
And he was taking the, it's like rhino tusk or something like that, deer antler spray,
which is a performance enhancer and they didn't talk about it like on whatever.
Ray Lewis used to be a guy that you would game plan around going anywhere near.
right let's let's figure out what ray is and let's go somewhere else right like that was generally the game
plan if you watch the 49ers comeback after the power went out in new orleans they went right at
ray lewis because he couldn't play anymore it was washed couldn't run couldn't tackle couldn't hit
it was it was over once you can't run linebacker in the NFL it's over over and what change was they
went from going, they're like, why are we going away from him? He can't play anymore.
Let's go right to him. Tom Brady in the playoffs last season, completed two touchdown passes.
Now, some of this was at a necessity and game plan against the Chargers, for example,
they got the ball and first they took the opening kickoff march right down the field and a power
running game and the Chargers could never really adjust. And yes, they went in and he threw the big
game winning touchdown pass against Cancy, brought him back.
against Can City Chiefs,
and he had the game-winning touchdown pass against the L.A. Rams.
These things did, in fact, happen.
But he had three interceptions, and it should have been four.
There would have been no Super Bowl.
There would have been no second touchdown pass.
And Brady has lost his favorite target,
the ultimate mismatch in Rob Grancowski,
which, just like the Tom Brady rule,
can't hit a guy below the knee,
has elongated his career,
not having Gronk will likely shorten his career.
And that's okay.
It's okay to get old, but it happens really quickly.
And if you say, no way it happens quickly to Tom Brady.
How good was Brett Farve as a quarterback?
Do you guys remember Brett Farv's first year with the Minnesota Vikings?
Anybody remember that?
Like, of the sporting events I've seen in my lifetime,
and I've been working in this business now,
this is entering my 16th football season.
16th year covering national sports.
Maybe the greatest regular season game win, going into Lions Den, all the different
storylines was Brett Farve is forever a packer.
He never missed a start once he was starting for the Packers.
He won a Super Bowl.
He won three MVP's.
And Farve had toyed with retirement three consecutive years.
The third year, finally, they moved on.
and went to Aaron Rogers.
Named Aaron Rogers as a starter.
Only Brett Far was like,
hey, you know what?
I really want to come back.
And they're like, sorry.
We already gave it to Breadfar.
It's like every guy's ultimate nightmare
where she says,
I'll always be here for you.
You know?
And you're like, okay, I got to go figure myself out.
You figure yourself out.
You come back.
And she's moved on to another dude.
Right?
And a younger dude from Northern California.
Good looking, good.
At the time, Aaron
Rogers had like that Jesus look going.
So he goes to New York and actually the Jets thing started off.
They were like nine and three.
Then he had like a bicep tear played through it and they were stinking down the stretch.
He goes to the Minnesota Vikings.
His first year, Brett Favre, 33 touchdown, seven receptions,
68% completion percentage.
Remember Brett Fav, he's known as the gunslinger because he would force things into the smallest
openings possible.
his win
one of the greatest regular season wins
I can think of in the NFL
Remember he came in with the Minnesota Vikings
and beat the Packers in Lambo
Like damn
The Packers pretty good too
So then he was going to retire
And remember Chile
Chile went and sent a plane full of three dudes
Down to pull him off retirement
And he came back and he had this Nike hat
That he was mowing his grass with
You guys remember this look?
I mean it was the worst look
it probably smelled like some mixture of gasoline, beer, and fresh cut grass,
which is probably a pretty good aroma.
Somebody should put that thing together because while it may not turn women on,
like if a guy slathers that thing on and walks into a sports bar,
other dudes would be like, hey man, can I buy you, can I buy you a beer?
I don't know.
I bought him beer.
I bought him wings all night.
I just wanted to be around him.
Why?
What was it?
Well, honey, you don't understand.
He smelled like gas, beer, and fresh cut grass.
I mean, that is a popery of magic.
Fav came back, and here's how bad his last season was with the Vikings.
11 touchdowns, 19 interceptions, 60% completion percentage.
Oh, oh, boy, wait.
The Metro Dome literally, not figuratively, literally collapsed.
And I'm scared that Tom Brady is going to experience something that we in basketball know
as the run one more back syndrome.
You familiar with this?
Goulet, are you a pickup basketball player ever?
In my younger days, sure.
Are you okay?
When you were growing up in Canton, Connecticut,
same town I used to live in,
did you ever play pickup basketball?
Yes, I did.
Saturday mornings or at night on the weeknights?
Both, I would say.
Okay, so there's like a Saturday morning,
you got to start playing it like seven or at eight,
bunch of old guys come in.
First game is brutal.
Nobody can make a shot.
Dude's still stinking of beer and cigarettes the night before.
You know, haven't been playing.
But by the second and third, fourth game,
it gets to be pretty good.
You get a little series going.
One team's better than everybody else.
They're winning, win, win, and winning.
And then somebody makes a shot, and that's game.
And guys like, hey, I got to go.
Another guy's like, I got to go.
I got to go.
And then you're looking around.
There's nine guys in the gym
and one guy with his shoes partially off.
And some guy says,
you guys want to run one more?
You want to run one more?
And the guy who's taking off his shoes,
like, you know, told my wife would be home at like 10.
It's like 9.40.
Ah, hell, sure.
Let's run one more back.
Do you always happens at last game?
Somebody always gets hurt.
The game is usually terrible, and you always regret running that one more back.
Tom Brady is an unbelievable competitor.
He is going to go down as the most successful quarterback in the history of the sport.
Nobody's winning six Super Bowls.
Just not happening.
These are things that will never happen again.
But I fear that by coming back and having this contract, which gives him that magical 20th year,
and then he becomes a free agent.
He's selling his house.
He loses Rob Grunkowski.
Yes, last year, as they always did, ran through the AFC East, and they made this year.
But remember, the AFC East is likely, instead of having three rookie quarterbacks or two rookie quarterbacks last year, now they're going to have three second year quarterbacks.
They're still the Patriots.
They're still everybody's biggest game.
Everyone's gutting for them.
He's a year older.
He probably truthfully thought, why don't?
don't I just leave at the end of winning a Super Bowl, even if I still have time left.
Giselle wants him home.
He's supposed to be home by now.
All right, I'm going to run just one more back.
Mr. Kraft, one more.
Bill, just, I'm going to run this one back, and then that's it.
Red Farms last year.
Peyton won a Super Bowl his last year, but he was benched for Brock Osweiler,
nine touchdowns, 17 interceptions.
I don't know if it's this year or when it is, but it sure feels like it's coming
soon.
Because anyone who's ever run one back
knows what happens in that final game.
Kyler Murray made his NFL debut

Kyle Murray, number one on your roster, number one on his jersey, and the number one
overall pick in the NFL draft.
We got a first chance to see him, and he was really, really, really sharp.
Six or seven, 44 yards, a lot of dink and dunk.
Not a ton of time to throw, but look sharp, look good.
You know, I don't know what that offense is supposed to.
to look like, but that looked like a pretty good representation of moving the ball,
getting rid of it quickly, showing his movement in and out of the pocket,
and showing his tremendous arm strength and versatility.
So very early returns are pretty good.
I don't know if he'll be great because, hell, Daniel Jones was good last night.
Josh Rosen was good last night.
Baker Mayfield was spectacular.
Like, you know, just.
about everyone was good last night except for Dwayne Haskins.
And Dwayne Haskins is the guy that Colin has said, I like him better than I like
Kyla Murray.
So it's not a being reactive to last night.
It's more about, hmm, there's a book called Freakonomics.
You guys familiar with Freakonomics?
And the idea of Freakonomics is, look, there's different factors in every person's life.
And with each positive factor,
in your background, you're more likely to make more money, be more successful, have a better
life, right? It doesn't, it's not just, it doesn't necessarily come down to race. It comes down to
socioeconomic factors. Do you grow up in a one parent home, two parent homes? Where those parents
college educated, they have bachelor's to get you, they have a master's degree, what part of the
country did you grow up in? Do you have a house and apartment? You know, do you go to public
school or private school. Do you smoke? Do you drink? If you don't smoke, you don't drink.
You come from a two-parent home. Both parents are college-educated. You're far more likely to go to
college. Again, there's other debates this week about the value of college. Sure, are there
people, did Bill Gates drop out of Harvard? Yes. But it should be pointed out that he got into Harvard.
right? It is one thing to be a college dropout because you couldn't handle the work or you couldn't get into college.
It's a whole other thing to be, well, I was in Mark Zuckerberg.
I was at Harvard and I dropped out because I started Facebook and now I'm one of the 10 richest people on the face of the earth.
Like that's a little different than, hey, I don't think I need college.
Right? There's a little difference there.
I think the same is true with quarterback play.
I mean, we talked about Daniel Jones.
The likelihood Daniel Jones succeeds as a first-round traffic quarterback, what, 50-50 shot?
But then you put him behind a quarterback who the relationship is, they both play for the same guy.
You give him a great young running back.
you put him with a general manager who believes in him because he drafted him.
He's going to play for the, and the coach has developed quarterbacks and believes in him and draft him,
and they'll sit him and take their time.
Those all help him.
But those factors pale in comparison to what Kyler Murray has going for him.
Just like not smoking is a key factor in your level of education and your level of success.
The same is true for style of play of the team that you go into.
Kyler Murray's walking into the air raid system, same one he used in college.
By the way, it's also the same one that Cliff Kingsbury knows like the back of his hand
because he coaches an offensive coordinator and he played it as a player.
And he played in the National Football League and he's young enough to relate to his player.
And his ship is forever tied to Kyler's as is Steve Kime, their general managers, forever tied to Kyler.
And he walked into a team that had David Johnson and Christian Kirk.
and has
he still has
Larry Fitzgerald.
Like if anything,
not having a great offensive line
that you can run behind,
that you can depend on,
that you can line up,
that actually doesn't hurt that in this,
in the context of the Arizona Cardinals,
it doesn't make it all bad.
Because it doesn't get them far afield
from what they want to do,
which is snap it back there
and get rid of it quickly.
Have those wide splits
and just give him a second to throw
or give him a second to move.
I don't know if it works.
Because those same factors, the ones going against him is,
like he's 5'9 and 3 quarters.
Let's just be honest.
He's tiny.
He's also a guy that while he's agile in the pocket,
he runs around a lot and there's generally no such thing as an old running quarterback.
Doesn't feel like a pocket guy,
can't see over big offensive linemen,
has to get out of the pocket and likes to run.
And when you do, you get hit because you don't get faster in the NFL.
Everybody else does.
There's a lot of stuff working against him.
But if he's going to make it,
the Arizona Cardinals are the absolute perfect destination.
And that's what I saw last night.
Let's get to John Gullet with the news.
No, no, no, no, no.
Turn on the news.
This is the herd line news.
One of the big stories last night, Doug,
was Giants rookie quarterback.
Daniel Jones putting on a show against the Jets.
He went five for five, 67 yards, and a touchdown.
He may have played a little longer,
but a storm came through and the game was delayed.
It did look like end of day storm, didn't it?
It feels like it always happens this time of year.
We always get preseason games while the light thing delays.
Yeah, especially up, you know, in the Northeast.
It's nasty.
South, yeah.
I mean, first weekend of college football, the first two weekends of college football,
that's going to be a problem.
So obviously now that he played good for one drive in the preseason,
there is a huge quarterback controversy in New York.
Massif.
Their head coach, Pat Schumer, was asked what he would say to fans who think it's time
for Jones to replace Eli Manning.
I think slow your role.
I mean, this is just your first,
this is just his first go-round,
you know, and I think he did a good job.
As I mentioned, all along,
he's done nothing to disappoint us,
and certainly when you take the team down the field
and score a touchdown,
it's a good start.
Something good to build on.
And we've got a lot of time
before we start playing games,
and nothing at this point has changed.
That's the least.
cool anyone's ever sounded saying slow your role.
How open should the job? I think we all know
Eli's going to start the season. How open should they be
to replacing Eli midseason? Or should it be more of a
Eli starts, you finish the game once they're out of playoff contention?
Oh, I didn't like that last time.
He did it to keep his streak alive, but the streak is done. No, no, no, no. He did not do it
just to keep his streak alive. Let's remember
how this went down. They offered him, before they pulled him
and started Gino Smith, they said, hey,
we know we want to keep the streak alive.
We want to pull you in the third quarter to the fourth quarter, maybe the third quarter,
to get the other two guys going.
And he was like, nah, don't worry about that.
You want to sit me, sit me.
They're like, okay, fine.
You benched.
Gino's in.
So should they do that same approach?
I don't think you have to make up your mind what you're going to do.
Why do you have to make up your mind and tell everybody?
Where starting or not starting Eli has been the main storyline of this team for a couple of years.
It's not a simple solution.
I didn't say it's a simple solution, but I think the answer will become obvious.
That's really my take.
I think the answer will become obvious.
You always have the kid up and ready.
He's not going to be ready to play for the first month and a half, two months of the season.
And if you have an opportunity where you're getting whooped to pull Eli Manning, go for it.
Go for it.
Do it.
And then just come make sure you're prepared for the press conference after.
Look, Eli's our starter.
But in this particular case, like, we're down 30 to 10.
we wanted to get the kid up, getting some live reps.
Maybe announce it.
So if you are going to make a full-time change,
fans can have a, okay, this is Eli's last start at home, whatever.
I don't know.
I think you just got to figure it out.
You know, you don't have to, this goes a little bit in line with,
I hate to do this.
It's going to ruin some people's day to go along with the president, right?
The president's like, why do we have to tell everybody
what we're going to do it, right, in terms of wars?
And why do we have to tell you what we're going to?
We know we're all communicating.
and by the way, things change.
You probably went into last night going like,
hey, you know what, you might have played better than we thought.
And the things we don't always catch
if a guy made the right read, made the right throw.
Sometimes the defense plays a part.
Remember, he's going against twos and threes.
But just have a plan in place
in case you play him late in the game.
Have open conversations with Eli Manning.
It's going to be obvious at some point in the year
that if you're going to make a move,
and if it's not obvious, then don't make a move.
You're fine.
The Chiefs head coach, Andy Reid,
said yesterday that reigning NFL MVP, Patrick Mahomes, will play the entire first quarter
of the Chief's first preseason game tomorrow night.
Obviously, that's not the way most teams operate.
Most starters don't play unless they're really young.
And if they do, it's one series and they pull you out.
Is this kind of too big of a risk to play Mahomes for the entire first quarter in preseason
game one?
Again, I don't understand the whole this is where,
announcing what we want to do before we do it, you're allowed to do whatever the heck you want to do.
Sure.
We don't know if they're going to get the ball once, twice, three times in the first quarter.
One quarter is not really a measurement of plays, right?
That could be one play or it could be 20.
Like, you don't know.
I mean, it depends how the game goes.
I'm just, the first thing that stood out to me was, what is he going to gain from that?
Probably not.
It's not like he's.
He was live reps.
I get that, but the risk is, oh, your season's over.
Okay, here's the question.
Like, we've already seen.
The only quarterback I can remember getting hurt in a preseason game from getting hit was Tony Romo.
Romo's last year with the Cowboys, he played, I'm going to say, it was almost like one snap.
He got, yeah, he got crunched.
We just got tackled, but it was just weird.
And he broke that, not his back, but there's like a little bone that attaches to the, forget what it's called.
Same thing that Carson Wentz had last year.
Well, but I mean, we saw a quarterback, not a starter.
Transverse fracture.
We saw the Eagles backup quarterback last night
broke his wrist.
Yes.
I mean it doesn't mean it has to be, it's football.
You can get hit wrong and you can break something real,
not a big deal, but this is the team that expects to win the Super Bowl.
I'm just surprised that it's the same head coach.
It's the same weapons.
I would guess he's just going to get rid of it quickly.
And they want to, why not do it early rather than do it late?
Like play him a quarter, then play him a half.
and then maybe shut him down.
I don't know.
I don't know what their plan is,
but a quarter does not actually sound like that much.
It only feels like that much
because other guys only played a series.
And that's John Gulet with the news.
Well, that's the news.
And thanks for stopping by.
The Herd Lye News.
Let's go to the Herd Satellite Network
as Ben Volan joins us
from the Boston Globe, NFL senior writer.
And Ben,
I want to ask you this,
Are the Patriots ready at the end of the year to move on from Tom Brady?
Look at the structure of this contract.
His house is up for sale.
This is 20th year in the NFL.
Are they preparing themselves to move on from Tom Brady?
I mean, the pieces are starting to add up that way a little bit,
no question.
He also signed with the William Morris agency,
like an off-field entertainment representation company last week.
So, yeah, I think both sides are pretty clearly,
at least not committing for next year.
It's definitely still on the table,
but the Patriots aren't saddling themselves
with any sort of contract down the line.
And I think they want to see how we looked at 42
before they want to commit anything to 43.
So, yeah, I think the Patriots and Tom Brady
are just not necessarily preparing for, you know,
to at all end after this year,
but at least getting ready for the possibility.
It's fascinating.
Okay, so you lose Rob Grankowski, who is his kind of ultimate outlet, right?
Julian Edelman's been out with the broken thumb.
What does he exactly have to work with outside of when healthy and outstanding running game?
Well, you hope that Edelman, and the hope is that Edelman will be back for the regular season.
So he's definitely the engine of the offense right now.
And boy, they need him.
Nikiel Harry, the first round pick, he looked pretty good last night, using that big body,
make a couple of contested catches.
Now, he did get a little banged up and he left the game,
but he was on the sideline last night,
so I don't think it's going to be anything serious.
He's going to be the new big physical receiving threat
that can replace gronk, you know,
some of the power that they have in that passing game.
So you hope that to kill Harry can make it through training camp healthy
and then can have a nice productive, you know, rookie season.
The running backs are really,
that's kind of what the Patriots passing game revolves around.
James White catching 85, 90 balls out of the backfield.
Rex Burkhead can catch the ball out of the back field or the slot.
You're bringing back Sonia Michelle.
You brought in Damien Harris.
Really, it's all about the running backs right now
because they didn't really go out and replace Rob Gruncowski.
Other than Edelman, it's a bunch of question marks at wide receiver.
So, yeah, it's definitely still a work in progress for Brady and his weapons right now.
It's probably going to be another year where they struggle
and they look inconsistent in that first month in season
before they really start to figure out their personnel.
Right.
Again, division play, and they remember that they're better than all the teams in their division who have all kinds of other issues to catch up on.
Explain to me the extension, right?
Like, why was it structured in the way it was structured?
Yeah, it's kind of weird.
Like, the Patriots usually don't do dummy contracts like that.
They did the void years.
You know, it's a salary cap trick.
It helped them create space this year.
I think when it says, though, they're pretty adamant about not giving Brady an actual extension.
Because if this thing void in March, they're going to take a $13.5 million cap hit next year no matter what.
So even if he comes back and plays, you've got to add that $13.5 million onto whatever contracting sign.
So I think the fact that they're willing to do that shows that there maybe weren't, they really didn't want to do an extension.
And I think from Brady's side of it, he actually got some control of the situation.
I think this year it was stressing him out a little bit that here we are.
We got to August and they still hadn't read on his contract.
I think he's getting a little anxious about the whole situation.
Well, now it comes to a head to March.
Now the void day is March 17th, and that's when that big salary cap charge hits.
And Brady can't be franchise tax.
That gives him a little bit more control of the situation.
And now he doesn't have to wait around until next August.
We should have some clarity about it, hopefully in March.
The Patriots can always re-sign them afterwards.
They can redo the deal before March 17th.
So my thought is they're going to just do this now,
and then they'll figure it out after the season next February or March.
they'll figure out Tom, you know, if Brady's going to come back and what his contract will be,
but Brady at least took a little bit of control of the situation and now can,
the timing works out better in his favor.
Ben Bolin, joining us in the Boston Globe.
Doug Ghalybin for calling this is the herd.
Is Jared Stidham, the new Jimmy Garoppolo?
I'm not ready to go that far yet.
Belichick loved him from Jimmy Garoplo, and it really paid him to trade it away.
However, Stim looked pretty good last night.
I was definitely impressed with his poise, his ability to hang in the pot.
pocket, go through his reeds. You like to see young quarterbacks throwing confidently over the
middle, not just consistently settling for checkdowns, throwing face throws to the sideline.
He was letting it rip and throwing some tight window throws. I know it's the lions. I know it's
their twos and their threes, so let's not go too crazy. But he actually looked pretty poised last
night. I was impressed. And, you know, then to me that comes down to, well, do you really need to
keep Brian Hoyer as well? So to me, the better that Stim plays, even if Hoyer plays great,
they should try to trade him to someone.
Maybe I look at the Arizona Cardinals.
They have not a whole lot behind Kyler Murray,
and that's a guy I'd be worried about his durability this year
at his rookie season.
So I'd call up the Arizona Cardinals
and see if they have a use for a good veteran quarterback
like Brian Hoyer to be the backup.
Ben, you cover the entire NFL.
I'm wondering if you're hearing that the Raiders
are frustrated with Antonio Brown
because they're just trying to determine how good Derek Carr is.
Well, they're definitely not getting the reps
and the continuity.
And I can guarantee you, John Gruton doesn't like having his best receiver and offensive player not on the field,
especially when they just gave him two years and almost $32 million guaranteed.
You know, he's showing up to camp on a hot air balloon.
He's not practicing.
And he's, you know, burning his feet in a cryogenic chamber or whatever's going on there.
So he can't be thrilled.
I don't know.
It kind of sounds like Antonio Brown's playing his old tricks and, you know, doing veteran tricks to get out of the early part of training camp at, you know, preseason.
And I still think he'll be there when it counts,
and he'll get in some reps with Derek Carr in the final couple weeks of the season.
But, yeah, I mean, it's never good to be sitting out practice,
and I can't imagine John Gruden's too happy about it.
I just hope we get to see some of it on hard knocks this week
and that they don't, you know, gloss over it this time.
Yeah, we didn't really see any boardroom stuff.
Like we do, normally you have the boardroom conversation between general manager and head coach
or general manager and all the coaching staff,
and they start to go through guys they like and don't like.
we didn't see that last week.
I do wonder if we see that this week.
Ben Bolin, Boston Globe, senior NFL writer, follow him on Twitter,
read his work in the globe.
Ben, great stuff.
Thanks so much for your insight.
All right, thanks, Doug.
Yeah, it's one of those things where we shouldn't be surprised
if Antonio Brown shows up in a hot air balloon.
I do think in the terms of wasteful expenses,
like you spend how much on what?
Like, you could have just got in a car and had somebody Uber and drop you off.
You did a hot air balloon?
Like that's still one of the weirdest deals.
Now, it looked cool.
Hot air balloon also seems like one of those things that it is good from afar but far from good.
Like that looks really cool.
You get up there, you go way up.
You go way up.
Okay, we're up.
Time to go down.
Otherwise, you're just kind of uncomfortable.
Maybe it's romantic.
You're with somebody you love.
You care of your wine.
You know, you're having a glass of wine.
You're in Napa.
Although there's always the person who's...
So it's not like you can make out and really enjoy the experience.
And I was like, okay, can you, ma'am, can you, I know you're just directing the balloon,
but can you turn your head away so you can't see us making out?
She's not really a PDA person.
But we shouldn't be surprised.
This is why it's one thing to trade for Antonio Brown,
something to trade for Antonio Brown and give him a huge contract.
And I think they got him at a deal, a relative discount in comparison to Michael Johnson.
Michael Thomas, sorry, Michael Thomas.
Relative discount.
I like Antonio Brown on the field.
better than like Michael Thomas.
He's a game-breaking wide receiver.
Tough.
You know, can make plays in traffic.
You can't double him.
He's too fast for bigger D.Bs and too strong for guys his size.
He's a ridiculous worker.
But, I mean, if you reward bad behavior with the new contract,
what do you think you're going to get?
And it hasn't been bad behavior.
It's just, I mean, hot air balloon and burning your feet in a cryo chamber.
You know, you frostbite your feet.
That's a new one.
That is a new one.
That's more bizarre than dog ate my homework.
In this case, the dog actually did eat his homework.
I'm going to give you five things you think you learned last night from the NFL preseason,
but you didn't.
It's in the best for last.
It's next in the herd.
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific.
Doug Gottlieb in for Colin.
This is The Herd.
wherever you may be, however you may be making it must be making us part of your day.
Hope you have a great, great weekend.
Yellow football on a Thursday night, you probably feel better about yourself.
Like, yes, yes, I do.
Yes, I do.
Some kids head back to school next week.
It comes out that fast.
Some are already back in school.
Others still on vacation like my kids are.
Good life.
But football is back, which gave us a great idea for the best for last.
It's almost the end of the show, but that doesn't mean.
we're phoning it in. Nope, we grind to the very last segment. It's time for best for last.
There were 11 preseason games last night, which led to overreaction Friday, right? You tune in to
your local sports guy, sports gal, sports talk station, Rock 100, home of the Patriots, right?
So we thought we'd say for you the best for last, the five biggest football overreactions
of the first major night of preseason football.
You ready?
Here we go.
The Broncos are going to regret giving up on Paxton Lynch.
That's because Paxton Lynch was 11 for 15, 109 yards, 115.7 pass rating.
Also, four rushes, 38 yards.
He didn't actually play last year at all.
This is a former first round pick.
He was given the keys to the kingdom in Denver after Peyton was gone.
and he couldn't take advantage of that great defense.
Trust me, there is no quarterback conscious in Seattle
because they know Paxon Lynch is not really a starting quarterback.
He just had a nice little night.
Lamar Jackson is a pocket passer.
This can be part of the massive overreaction Friday.
Lamar Jackson went four for six, 59 yards, one touchdown.
Should be pointed out that his best completion of the night,
which is right before the touchdown,
it looked like he was throwing it to his tight end
and the wide receiver actually made an unbelievable catch.
It was like to one of two guys and to nobody,
but the wide receiver made an unbelievable catch.
He didn't have one rushing attempt.
Do you really think the Ravens are not going to want Lamar Jackson to run the football?
They have said they are going to have him run the football.
Last year he didn't have one game more than 205 yards passing
and they beat up on the worst defenses in the NFL.
The Bengals twice.
They were terrible from the bad defenses in the NFL.
And he averaged 17 rushes the game, and they think that'll go up this year.
He's not an efficient pocket passer.
He's below 60%.
And he will remain such.
All right, here's one.
Daniel Jones will make the Giants forget about Eli Manning.
It's 5 for 5, 67 yards.
Touchdown.
158.3 passer rating.
That's perfect.
Eli was one-for-one, three yards booed after going three.
and out. Of course, Pat Schumer shut down the quarterback controversy.
And Daniel Jones, by Chris Carter's estimation, actually made the wrong read on his touchdown throw.
And eventually, Waterville Final Summer. Pat Schumer shut it down, said there is no quarterback controversy.
Slow your role, I believe. They're going to be T-shirts with slogans saying,
slow your role, New York Giants.
Here's a hot take Friday, right? The Patriots,
found Tom Brady's replacement in Jared Stidham.
Stidham, of course, played at Baylor, then played at Auburn,
14 of 24, 179 yards, one touchdown, 95.7, passer rating.
Who needs that guy in his great hair?
We have the heir apparent in Jared Stidham against the Detroit Lions.
Okay.
Look, Tom Brady is six times Super Bowl champion.
he is effectively on a one-year contract,
and they're going to try and develop Jared Stidham.
But he went in the fourth round.
Does Tom Brady love him getting all his reps?
Probably not.
But the idea that he's going to replace Brady next year,
who seems like a major, major reach.
Stidham was highly touted,
and of course left when there was a coaching change at Baylor.
I think he'd already been beaten out.
But I don't see him.
him being the heir apparent at this point in time.
And here's the last one.
I stayed away from it, and it's hard because it's so much fun.
He's so talented, and he's the number one pick.
Kyla Murray is the next Pat Mahomes.
Chargers didn't have Joey Boehser, Melvin Ingram.
He completed six out of seven passes for 44 yards.
He played on one drive.
With no game plan for the game, with no game plan for stopping the air raid offense,
with no book on Kyler Murray, the Chargers'Jews.
just kind of winged it, and he
dinked and dunked and looked really good doing it.
Got a chance to be a hell of a player,
but the idea that he's the next Pat Mahomes
because you saw him throw
for 44 yards on one
drive against the stripped
down version of a dynamic defense,
I'm not buying as it yet.
And that's our best for life.
Now, I did not include a photo
that I showed the crew this morning, which
I guess I forgot to send to you guys,
that was my
winner formal. I think it's
winter formal photo from when I was in high school.
And I was essentially a Gap model.
And it was the front of the store Gap sweater.
It's big.
Big.
V-neck, multi-colored.
Music, you asked for their white pants.
They were not.
They were just a light, soft, khaki chino front.
Definitely with pleats.
High school was the pleat era.
A lot of pleats.
College was, frankly, the pleat era as well.
When you get to flat front until, what, a decade ago?
flat front came back in
decade ago.
So there are
photos out there. I'll throw that one up there
on a TBT.
You know, the one thing about the NFL
and the preseason is
kind of like, preseason is
preseason is like movie trailers, isn't it?
You almost feel like if you set the Browns
to like a movie trailer
like top gun
in a world
where Baker Mayfield
has been told no.
Cleveland says yes.
Right?
Think about it for a second.
Average runtime on a NFL game is how long?
Three hours, right?
Average runtime of a drive or a quarter.
You know, it's like sometimes there's a longer previews,
sometimes they're the shorter.
They end up, you're on the field about five minutes.
Okay?
Well, the previews are, what, 15 minutes for a movie?
But each individual preview is,
I don't know, 90 seconds long.
That's what preseason is.
It's the trailers.
And you're watching and you're like,
I'll go see that.
No chance.
I'm not too much CGI.
I'm not seeing that.
No, no chance.
Oh, she's in that?
No, I'm not into her, but like you might be.
She's your favorite actress, right?
Hun? Sweetie?
Yeah.
No, she's okay.
She's okay.
That's kind of what it feels like.
And you're like, oh, I don't know.
Giants coming out with another movie.
I get this new kid.
I heard he's, it's not bad.
Why, I go, well, have you got Sequin?
All right, I'll go see it.
You know, I'll go see.
It's a body cop movie.
It's another rock movie.
Okay, I'll go see it.
Is it going to be the greatest thing ever?
No.
It's going to be Jumanji?
No.
Preseason football is just like the previews
when you go to the movies.
That's it.
The exact same thing.
It gets you, and it doesn't always mean
that you're going to go and watch that movie in theaters.
You know, I'm going to wait until I see that one.
went at home. I'm not going to go to, if it makes you want to go to a game, that's like making
you want to go to the theater. I'll wait until it comes out on Netflix or Amazon Prime, right?
That's like, I'll just watch them on the dish. I'll just watch them on Red Zone. I can't wait
to see them. And last night, you kind of got in on the Browns. The Browns seemed like a movie
you'd want to watch. He kind of probably a little bit in on the Arizona Cardinals, even though
you never thought you'd circle an Arizona Cardinal game because you want to see how this plays out.
And then you're like, Josh Rosen's not as terrible, but he's running around for his life.
That movie may be so bad that I want to see it.
And sometimes the trailers have all the best stuff.
Paxton Lynch feels like the trailer for the comedy where every funny line that's in the movie was in the trailer.
Because we've seen Paxton Lynch's movie and we know how it usually ends.
All right.
My thanks to John Gulley, Sammy, and of course my man, Ryan Music, the entire crew here.
Have a great weekend.

Last night, a blown call changed a game. This morning, the internet lost its mind.
And nobody's telling you exactly what happened. That's where Sports Slice comes in.
I'm Timbo. And every episode, we're cutting through the noise, breaking down the biggest moments in sports
and giving you the real story behind the headline. And we're going,
straight to the source, the athletes themselves,
their locker room stories, their reactions in the moment,
and the stuff nobody gets to hear.
Listen to SportsSlice on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts,
or wherever you get your podcast.

Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app,

y'all? You're listening to Learn the Hardway
with your favorite therapist and host, Kier Games.
This space is about
black men's experiences, having

Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged.
It's the enhanced games.
Some call it grotesque.
Others say it's unleashing human potential.
Either way, the podcast Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year.
Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds.
I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth.
Listen to Superhuman on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
This is an IHeart podcast.
