You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Ah, here we go. Super Bowl getting closer. This is the herd.
Starting point is 00:02:45 Wherever you may be and however you may be listening. Live in Los Angeles, IHeartRadio, Fox Sports Radio, and right here at FS1. Hope all the people in the Midwest who are dealing with that awful weather, that frightening weather, that dangerous weather. We'll try to warm things up today with especially hot. takes how about that joy Taylor joining us just hang in there that weather is my wife's from the Midwest we were talking about that last night just awful awful frightening weather people pets yes it's bad my family's all in Pittsburgh which isn't as bad as Chicago and some of the other cities in the
Starting point is 00:03:19 west but brutal I'm thinking of you yeah we are yeah be safe it's great part of the country big part of the country for football certainly but with this time this Super Bowl we got a west coast and an east coast but I want to I want to talk about something that's interesting. So the NBA yesterday did something, and it's just a crock. You know I've been pro player forever. There's terrible billionaires. They move teams all over
Starting point is 00:03:42 the place. I mean, Cleveland before LeBron and after is a poorly run business. Doesn't matter if it's an NBA team or a waste management business. Sometimes it feels like both. It's poorly run. So yesterday, the NBA finds Anthony Davis and his agent
Starting point is 00:03:57 $50,000. Ooh. For publicly requesting a trade. By the way, the NBA media, guys like me, ask players all the time if they want to stay somewhere. So a player can't talk about like his future. And think about this. The NBA encourages its star players to talk about politics, to talk about social issues,
Starting point is 00:04:24 talk about the president. They encourage that. But if a player talks about hoops, there's a $50,000 fine. Well, then are you going to make sure that NBA media doesn't ask LeBron or Kyrie Irving or Anthony Davis or Kauai Leonard about where do you want to play? You don't quite understand this. Okay. I read this morning LeBron could get fine for tampering. Really?
Starting point is 00:04:48 Don't you encourage all your stars to go to social media? LeBron's on social media all the time. Isn't that the strength of the NBA? They're better than the NFL on social media. But you're going to find them as long as they tweet about the president, socialish, policy. But if you tweet about a basketball player, we're going to find you $50,000. This is a charade. It's a con job. There's always been two stories in sports. The one league sell you and then the truth. This is a con job. The NBA loves this. Adam Silver absolutely
Starting point is 00:05:22 loves this. That's why the fines only $50,000. $50,000 for a major agent and a superstar in the NBA, That is tip money for the rest of us. By the way, do you think it's a coincidence? I mean, Joy and I've been in this business a while that the Anthony Davis-Lebron-Laker thing broke at 7 a.m. Eastern Super Bowl Week on Monday. So as all the sports radio stations in America, the 6,000 sports radio stations are jumping into their NFL talk,
Starting point is 00:05:53 what do you know the story broke at 7 a.m. on Monday of Super Bowl week and flooded every show. You think that's a coincidence. This story could have broken on Saturday, could have broken last. It just so happened to break on morning drive 7 a.m. Wednesday. Okay, this is the big con. The NBA loves this. You don't think the NBA loves.
Starting point is 00:06:19 LeBron's been out for a month. The ratings have been sagging since he left. You don't think they like LeBron, Laker, Anthony Davis talk, Kyrie to the Laker talk. They love this stuff. this in America today NFL is king and the season's winding down NBA's number two and it's very good on social media and it's it's stars drive the league NFL is kind of driven by the system kind of the brand the shield NBA is driven by it stars you don't think Adam Silver loves that his stars are getting talked about on Super Bowl week that I'm not leading my show Adam Silver's told me before he listens He watches. He watches all this stuff.
Starting point is 00:07:01 He takes the temperature of the room. Sports is all about real estate. And February, the NFL has been encroaching on the NBA's real estate for years. They've moved around free agency. They can move combines and drafts to get in the way of the NBA. This is the NBA firing back and arrow. Oh, it's Super Bowl Week. Oh, it's Super Bowl Week.
Starting point is 00:07:23 Let's just make sure stories get out. Listen, this is not dangerous for the league. What they're doing is they're patronizing New Orleans. Adam Silver in the league are going, shame on you guys. Shame on you, Rich Paul. Shame on you, Anthony Davis. That is terrible. Here's a $50,000 fine.
Starting point is 00:07:43 You're just patronizing New Orleans, which has had, let's be honest, a really crappy week. Between the call and the Rams game and Anthony Davis leaving, it ain't great for New Orleans and the Benson family. So this is patronizing them, you know, saying patting them on the back, We got your back on this, those bad star players. You think it's bad for the NBA that Anthony Davis joins LeBron in Los Angeles? Come on. And it's also not dangerous for the league. Basketball from AAU to college basketball to the NBA has always been about a handful of stars controlling the league.
Starting point is 00:08:17 The NBA has always been about dynasties, the Celtics, Bill Russell, 111, and then you went into the Lakers, Jerry West, and Wilt and Gail Goodrich, and then you had the pissed. and then MJ and then Shaq and Kobe and then and now we have the Warriors. The Miami Heat thing was like very, very close to a dynasty, two titles four years. It's good. The only problem for the NBA is when the dynasty's boring like the Spurs dynasty was. But basketball at the AAU level, three best high school basketball players in America last year, all chose Duke. This is what basketball players do. Stop watching the movie Hoosiers.
Starting point is 00:08:54 It doesn't exist. That was a great movie. I love Hoosiers. That's not what real basketball is about today. So star players moving. I'll tell you what's dangerous for the NBA. It's not stars going to big brands. What is absolutely dangerous for the NBA is seven teams were tanking last year.
Starting point is 00:09:13 That's not good. This year, by March, you're going to have about 10 tanking trying to get that kid at Duke, Zion Williamson. You already got about five teams actively tanking. That may double in about a month. That's a problem for the NBA. This is great, great news for the NBA. And a 50,000 fine is a complete con job.
Starting point is 00:09:38 It's just pretending they care about New Orleans. All right. Let's talk some football. Tom Brady is 5 and 3 in Super Bowls. Let's say he loses. He's 5 and 4. Is he no longer the goat? Let's say he wins.
Starting point is 00:09:59 and goes six and three. Joy, is he even goadier? He's the greatest of the goat goats. Like, he'll be the goadiest goat. Let's say Belichick wins and goes six and three. He is the best coach. Oh, wait, we know it. He loses and goes in five and four. He's still the best coach in the history of football. This Super Bowl has no impact on the Patriots outside of the joy of winning. It will not affect Belichick's legacy. It has no effect on Tom Brady's legacy. Best coach, best quarterback. Philip Rivers in this game, that would affect it.
Starting point is 00:10:38 But I'll tell you, if the Rams win this game, it is a complete game changer for a lot of people. Let's start with Sean McVeigh. 33-year-old head coach Super Bowl champ beats the reigning American domestic football genius. It would be massive for Sean McVey. Sean McVey goes into an elite group. He's the next Bill Walsh.
Starting point is 00:11:09 He's the next Bill Belichick on the offensive side of the ball. Number two, Jared Gough. Kind of looks like Brady, both from Northern California. Brady grew up idolizing Montana, golf watching Brady, West Coast Kids, genius head coach. Oh, Jared Goff is the closest thing potentially over the next 15 years to Tom Brady. It would be huge for the city of Los Angeles. This has always been a Lakers town.
Starting point is 00:11:40 Football is still a growing business in Los Angeles. The Dodgers are established. USC football, Lakers are established. This would be a movement. This would be pulling people away. Super Bowls have a way of change. changing cities. It would also be number four, big for other stars in this league.
Starting point is 00:12:03 The Rams went heavily into free agency and into big diva names. Historically, that was dumb guy territory. Smart GMs did not do that. But for guys like Levian Bell, guys on the market, it is big for players. And let me add this. if the NFL had to pick a side who wins this game, they'd want Los Angeles. About five or six years ago, I worked at the other place.
Starting point is 00:12:33 I was told by an executive the NFL wanted to become more entertainment driven. They wanted, they understood they were now a television show more than a sport. Los Angeles is the entertainment capital of North America. since I heard that six years ago, Vegas is going to have a team. Los Angeles has two teams. They're moving the NFL combine here. They've okay and completed about 60% of a new stadium
Starting point is 00:13:06 and Super Bowls and the NFL network will take place in that stadium. This would be good for the league. McVe, Goff, City of L.A., free agency as a whole, NFL. Well, this game means nothing for Tom Brady's legacy. Absolutely nothing for Belichick. But it is a game changer if the Rams win. Coming up next, you know how some guys are a trash talker? Muhammad Ali, Larry Bird, Gary Payton were trash talkers.
Starting point is 00:13:39 Bill Belichick just proved again he is the great trash mumbler. He trolled his own legendary quarterback. Hi, it's the herd. The world is full of sounds that warn you about danger. Like if you get a little too close to a rattlesnake, you know, you hear a rattle. But in the digital world, if your personal information's in danger, there's no rattling sound to let you know. You can be in big trouble. Good thing, LifeLock has added the power of Norton's security to see more cyber threats. Whether it's potential threats to your identity, like your personal information for sale on the dark web, or say threats to your devices like malware or emerging viruses, hey, if you got a problem,
Starting point is 00:14:18 problem, their agents work to fix it. Of course, we know this. Nobody can stop every cyber threat. Nobody can prevent all identity theft or monitor all transactions at all businesses. But LifeLock with Norton can detect a wide range of threats that could sneak up on you. You don't see them coming. Starting point is 00:14:53 18, cacha, 29, 99. 24, just 10 bucks more. 1-800flowers.com. Enter the code, Heard, H-E-R-D. All right. So, like, we know certain people are like trash talkers. Muhammad Ali. It was almost poetry.
Starting point is 00:15:06 And Gary Payton is like the great trash talker. Michael Jordan. Larry Bird was a massive trash talker. Some got most, most athletes talk a little trash. Belichick is the great. great trash mumbler. So I thought this was trolling yesterday. So he somebody asked him about Aaron Donald of the Rams.
Starting point is 00:15:27 And remember who people consider the best football player ever. And when you look at all-time lists, Brady's number one. Lawrence Taylor, who Belichick coached, you know, is somewhere in the top 10. Here's what Belichick said yesterday. Aaron Donald's a great football player. I wouldn't put anybody ahead of Lawrence Taylor. I can't put anybody ahead of Taylor. Taylor's the best I've ever seen, certainly the best I've ever coached.
Starting point is 00:15:53 And I just wouldn't put anybody ahead of him. Okay. It's one thing to say when you have what many believes the best player ever to play football, certainly the most impactful. Lawrence Taylor is the best player I've ever had. But then to dig into it and go, certainly the best I've ever coached. Now remember the word certainly.
Starting point is 00:16:18 That's what we call in our business a trigger word. Certainly means obviously. You'd be stupid to even argue it. It's not even comparable. Certainly, if I said Harvard's the best Ivy League school, in my opinion. All right. If I said Harvard is certainly the number one Ivy League school. That's a shot at Yale in Princeton.
Starting point is 00:16:39 That's personal. If I said with my wife present, man, it's the best lasagna I've ever had, that's a little dig but if I said it's certainly the best lasagna ever cooked for me knowing she takes great pride
Starting point is 00:16:56 in cooking like Brady takes great pride in being great that is trolling that that that is you could have just stopped best player I've ever had certainly the best player I've ever coached
Starting point is 00:17:12 isn't that a little four days out from the Super Bowl, you don't think that's a little. This is what Belichick does. Remember Tom Brady's birthday. Tom's just a player. This is the psychology. Bill Parcells was great at this. Joe Torrey was great at this.
Starting point is 00:17:31 Phil Jackson was great at this. Nick Sabin's great at this. Red Arbach. You can go back to the great coaches of all time. Greg Popovich, getting everybody in his camp to believe it's a unit. take less money. Psychology is a huge part. I mean, go back to Vince Lombardi's quotes about football.
Starting point is 00:17:53 When you're asking guys to run through a wall, 18 games, pre-season, post-season, do your job, take a pay cut. Football's hard. Football practice is hard. You've got to keep players motivated. I mean, this week, Belichick even trash-mumbled Wade Phillips. Do you remember that? Remember that one?
Starting point is 00:18:19 I've certainly changed a lot in the last 30 years, schematically. Wade really hasn't. I mean, he really hasn't. So you've got to give him credit for that. The systems lasted. I mean, really, this is part of his dad's system that he's developed and, you know, adapted and developed there. And I think that's a real credit to what he put together 30 years ago. You went back to high school and said, man, it's a credit to you.
Starting point is 00:18:46 You haven't changed it. all. Is that really a compliment or a shot? He's got mumble bars. I mean, it's also kind of a double shot because not only to say he didn't change his system, he said it's his daddy system. He's a trash mumbled. You don't even have your own system.
Starting point is 00:19:06 I may be, I may be speaking of speaking, you know, I was just thinking of this and Joey owes a beautiful, this outfit you had on today, poor people in the Midwest. You're taunting them today. You look like you're going out for a margarita after that. It's funny that you said that because you asked for a sweater this morning and you were talking about how cold it was and then mentioned that I didn't wear sleeves yesterday. And then I saw this dress this morning. I was like, I'm 100% positive.
Starting point is 00:19:32 You're going to say something about the back. I don't have long sleeves on. But I have a heated blanket on my legs right now. So it's kind of unfair. Minutes 54 in Minneapolis. She's going to be in Fort Lauderdale having a margarita right after the show. It is in Los Angeles. It's going to be nice outside today, probably.
Starting point is 00:19:50 Probably I mean in the 70s. I just thought of that. Joy with the news. No. No. No. No. No. This is the herd line news. I do kind of look like I should be sipping a mint jule up on a balcony or something right now. All right.
Starting point is 00:20:04 So 17 years ago, Tom Brady, Belichick, and the Patriots were the lovable underdogs up to face the greatest show on turf in St. Louis Rams. Now eight Super Bowl appearances and five titles later. They're now the NFL's evil over. Lord, but for some reason the Patriots are on a nobody believes in us tour as of late. And Robert Kraft is continuing that narrative. He shared his thoughts yesterday about the people who are wishing for the end of this dynasty. 17 years ago, we were Cinderella people, and I understand it. And if I wasn't a fan of the Patriots, I'd feel the same way.
Starting point is 00:20:42 So that's great. And you know what, to all those people, we hope we're going to make you keep feeling. on that way for quite a while. They're on top, so I really can't blame them for having this mentality, especially considering the narrative around them all year. You know, it's interesting, Joy, these leagues, their goal is to not have dynasties. That's why when you have a great year in pro sports, you get a bad draft pick. They have salary caps in the NBA, hockey, NFL.
Starting point is 00:21:09 They don't want dynasties. We have an NBA dynasty. We have really an NFL dynasty. We have a college football dynasty. Serena and Federer were tennis dynasties. Sports, college football, college basketball, Duke got the three best players, overwhelming favorite to win this year. It is remarkable in sports right now. Even in baseball, there's a real separation going on right now in baseball between like Yankees, Red Sox, Dodgers, Cubs, Astros, more money, more players.
Starting point is 00:21:38 In my life, we've never had these concurrent dynasties. And there's a lot of different reasons for it. I don't want to bore people. I think some of it is millennials are not into the struggle. They want to join momentum. Kevin Durant's like, I'm not struggling in OKC. I'm going to go in Golden State and win. And I think millennial players, 23 to 35-year-old players generally like to jump on board winning organizations.
Starting point is 00:21:59 Well, I mean, there's other factors in the desire to move as well, though, because you didn't have the saturation of media coverage hammering on you for not having any rings either. That's a very good point. So players now are like, hey, I'll take, I'll go to Duke. Even though I grew up in Michigan or Atlanta, I'm going to go win and get on the side of the winning column. Right. I mean, in years from now, it's not like anyone's going to go back and, I mean, maybe with Kevin Durant, but most players are not examined the way that they moved around. So Kurt Warner and Marshall Falk led the greatest genre after we were just discussing to Super Bowl victory over the Titans 19 years ago in Atlanta.
Starting point is 00:22:40 And on Sunday, Jared Gough will try to deliver the fans. franchise's first title since that game in the same city. And on the Dan Patrick show yesterday, Kurt Warner offered Gough some advice before the biggest game of his life. Well, I mean, I think the one thing I would tell him is that you have to realize this game is like every other game when you get between the lines. I look back at my three Super Bowls. The first one, we were ahead 16 to nothing. It was tied 16, 16 in the fourth quarter. Just talked about the one in 2001.
Starting point is 00:23:10 We were down 17 to 3. tied up at 17 to 17 with two minutes to go. Every game, even big games like this with high stakes, they have their ebbs and flows. Momentum shifts very quickly, and that's what I would tell him is you've got to ride the waves of the Super Bowl. I think this is one advantage that the Patriots
Starting point is 00:23:29 truly have over the Rams is not just the experience, obviously they've been there a lot, but they all come into the game with the mentality of, this is just another game. Yeah, and if you look at New England in the last three years of all their playoff games, they've won all but one, and in that game, they didn't have to punt.
Starting point is 00:23:48 They've gotten to a point, in these games, New England's scoring about 34 points a game and getting 475 yards. I know what I'm getting in this game from New England. I know I'm getting points from New England. That I don't question. I don't know what I'm getting from the Rams. So to your point is,
Starting point is 00:24:05 50% of this game I know what I'm getting. Are the Rams who tend to be very comfortable in shootouts ready to go toe to toe to. I think that's possible. Or do they get overwhelmed because Brady does to the Rams what he did to Kansas City, which is death by a thousand cuts, and the Rams and McVeyer sitting on the sidelines to never get the football back. That's very possible. I don't love the Rams secondary and I don't love their linebackers. But I wouldn't, I don't look at the Rams offense the way that I look at the Chief's offense. It felt like doom that Patrick Mahomes was on the sideline for as long as he was because that's really what you were expecting
Starting point is 00:24:40 the answer to the Patriots in that game to be was the Chief's high flying offense. So when you didn't see that, it was like, this feels like it's over, even though they did have a great fourth quarter. I don't feel like that's, I feel like it's going to be a more even game with the Rams. This is his fourth career playoff start golf is, and he's going against Tom Brady, who beat St. Louis Rams in that Super Bowl. It's just, it's a staggering amount of disparity in experience. Tom Brady's become an era onto himself.
Starting point is 00:25:09 Yes. That will be in the NFL. It is the Tom Brady era. It's like the Tom Brady years. It's 18 nights. It's going to be 20 years, yeah. Yeah. So finally, Todd Gurley is one of the NFL's most devastating weapons.
Starting point is 00:25:18 He's obviously the Rams most talented running back, but CJ Anderson's bulldozed his way to at least 120 yards on the ground is three of his past four games. And now, according to Mike Freeman, and NFC head coach felt he is a better fit for how the Rams' offensive line blocks. Teams who have game planned against them say Anderson doesn't need clean lanes to be effective and defenses have a harder time tackling him because of his physicality than they do girly. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:25:44 That's a test. I don't know. I don't think Todd Gurley is pretty good. I think they're both. I understand the argument. It's kind of a bulldozing, offensive line. As opposed to more of a finesse running back in Todd Gurley? And CJ's a load, but I like Todd Gurley.
Starting point is 00:25:57 You think everyone's kind of doing a little what to be done for me lately? A little living in the moment. Yeah. Yeah. I think see. I don't know though. I don't know what to expect. Listen, Cooper Cup got hurt early in the year.
Starting point is 00:26:07 If Todd Gurley is a non-factor in the Super Bowl, there's no way the Rams can win. If they had Cooper Cup healthy and Gurley, I knew going in he's going to get 115 yards. I'd take the Rams today. I don't think the Rams have been the same since Cooper Cup left. And if Todd Gurley doesn't deliver, if he's on a stationary bike in this game, that's what worries me. We're going to have a bad Super Bowl. It's a huge factor for me as well. I don't know what to expect.
Starting point is 00:26:29 I don't have any idea. Fort Lauderdale Joy with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. heard lie news. There has been a lot of NBA talk about a bunch of stuff going on. Kyrie Irvin's moving and Anthony Davis is moving. LeBron, by the way, is coming back to play against the Clippers here.
Starting point is 00:26:46 I think it's tomorrow night. Yesterday had Chris Haynes-on, who broke the Kyrie Irving, is interested in getting, in potentially going to Los Angeles. Chris did say something during the show that I totally disagreed, but we didn't have, we had certain time restraints in regards to LeBron and Anthony Davis, and here it is. I heard you mention Kevin Love and Chris Boss before. Those guys are not on A.D.'s level, Colin. I will say that.
Starting point is 00:27:14 And AD is 25. If Anthony Davis came over to the Lakers, if they found the way to make it happen, LeBron will pass the keys to Anthony Davis. LeBron will play second fiddle to Anthony Davis. I do not believe that. And here's why. 95% of players in this league play, they just play. Nothing wrong with that.
Starting point is 00:27:37 About 5% lead. Michael Jordan led, bird lead, magic lead. Magic, by the way, the Lakers had a lot of good players. They had Kareem, wasn't a leader. Magic led and played. LeBron plays and leads. The Clay Thompson story, Lakers, the Kyrie Irving Lakers, A.D. to the Lakers. That's all engineered by LeBron.
Starting point is 00:27:59 Clutch sports. That's all engineered by LeBron. LeBron doesn't just play. He is a leader in this league, and the leagues had a handful of them. They had Jerry West. He was leading. They had, you know, Bill Russell. There's not been a ton of great NBA leaders.
Starting point is 00:28:13 There's been a million great NBA players. Magic Johnson, arguably, the greatest leader the league's ever had. The league was in the toilet. He and Larry Bird saved it. But I do not believe for a second, because LeBron's been out for 35 days, he's given up the baton. Never forget this. LeBron has played 55,000 minutes.
Starting point is 00:28:33 That is eighth all time. he's going to lead the NBA in minutes. He didn't have time to waste. He's coming off an injury. He wants this AD thing to happen fast. So he can get 25 or 30 games in with Anthony Davis. So when next year starts, they'll add another piece, which they will, and they're ready to roll. He didn't want to start with AD next year and figure three and a half months figuring out if the chemistry works.
Starting point is 00:29:01 So here's what happened. And this happened, you know, Tom Brady got hurt and left. for a year and we forget about people. Don't forget because LeBron's been out with a, not a major injury, but a more significant injury that was initially reported. You know, when you miss 16, 17 games in 40 days, that's a real injury in the NBA for the best body in the league. But I don't believe for a second because he's out of sight. He's not leading all these stories. I mean, LeBron still considers himself the best player in the NBA. This guy, he led the entire.
Starting point is 00:29:35 Eastern Conference until three months ago. He didn't come to L.A. to be somebody's valet. Anthony Davis is a great player. Show me his great leadership skills. He couldn't lead him to the playoffs with Boogie Cousins. Come on. Seven years in the league, one playoff win, one playoff series win. So I love Chris, but I still think, I think sometimes what happens, players get hurt,
Starting point is 00:29:59 players are out, and we just forget about him. We got people running for president in the United States that are 70 years. old. And not just one. You got Bloomberg and you Bernie Sanders and yet. LeBron's 34 years old. Let's not go crazy here. He is still last year, statistically,
Starting point is 00:30:18 the best player in the NBA by not just a little. Not just a little. Anyway, I was thinking about this. I just throw this out there. I'll get into it more later. It really is interesting, though. It is funny about how we hold our NBA
Starting point is 00:30:35 stars near and dearer to our heart. I'll give you an example. Statistically, Joe Montana in the Super Bowls is better than Tom Brady. Four for four. Brady's lost three of them. Joe Montana went four for four in Super Bowls. If you go look at their Super Bowls, Joe Montana's perfect. Joe Montana had a higher completion percentage. Joe Montana has never thrown an interception in the Super Bowl and has a much higher passer rating. But the minute Brady beat Atlanta, he won the volume game, and we just said, Joe, it was great knowing you, Tom's the goat. We didn't argue about it. It wasn't even on debate shows. It was understood. But yet, if you look at Michael and LeBron, LeBron has clearly surpassed Michael in the volume game too.
Starting point is 00:31:26 But to suggest LeBron is better than Michael Jordan, is sacrilegious. It's on my debate show, you know, 17 times a year. Think about how we treat our NBA stars. When LeBron moved to the Lakers, there were anti-Lebron murals from Kobe Bryant fans. How dare you have him come to our team? Yet in Green Bay, when Farrve left, Aaron won a Super Bowl,
Starting point is 00:31:56 and there were a lot of people in Green Bay saying, Aaron's better than Brett. We don't lose sleep, displacing our football icons. To even suggest LeBron is more lacquerish than Kobe or that LeBron is perhaps better than LeBron than Michael is infuriating. It creates rage. And ask yourself this.
Starting point is 00:32:24 Why? And I think the answer is very simple. We wear our basketball stars. We wear their shoes. We wear their gear. We invest them. We go to bed in the shirt. We play basketball in the shoes.
Starting point is 00:32:41 Our basketball stars, the shoe culture is so powerful and so personal. It's almost like NASCAR. You didn't root for the driver. I'm a Ford guy. I'm a Chevy guy. I'm a Dodge guy. The drivers were replaceable. But, hey, I'm Ford.
Starting point is 00:32:57 You're Chevy. I draw a line. Basketball, we are deeply in. embedded in our stars. It's just a more intimate game basketball is. Well, it's certainly marketed star over team. It's star and NFL's team over star. You can see the players that don't have helmets on.
Starting point is 00:33:17 It's not about the shield and the name on the front. It's about the name on the back. We have relationships emotionally with our NBA guys. We wear them. We invest in them. We can see them. You want to be like Mike. When you go to a game, you feel like you could just reach out to them.
Starting point is 00:33:34 Touch mic. It's a very different experience. We displace our NFL stars, our legends, very quickly. It's two different cultures. Yep, it is. Willie McGinnis, three-time Super Bowl champ, NFL Network with the Patriots. We'll be stopping by next. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports Radio, FS1, and the IHeard Radio app.
Starting point is 00:33:56 By the way, the public is overwhelmingly on the Patriots. The public is betting the Patriots. to this point, it should be duly noted, so are the sharps in Vegas, so are the wise guys. So this idea the fans were always wrong. Remember years ago, when the Dallas Cowboys went on their run, sports betting wasn't nearly as big as it is today in America. It's been legalized right by the Supreme Court. But the sports books took a bath because the Cowboys won in blowout fashion
Starting point is 00:34:23 and the Cowboys were the most popular team in the country. And the average fans loved the Dallas Cowboys and Troy Akeman and Jimmy Johnson and Emmett Smith and Michael Irvin and all these great players. So the idea that fans aren't occasionally right, fans are right all the time. Fans, remember, fans play favorites, fans like stars. Well, if you just bet the last, I think it's the last 10 years, if you just bet New England every week, they're a favorite, they have stars. If you just bet New England, I think the number is 64%.
Starting point is 00:34:56 You would have won 64. If you just took them every week. So there's a lot of guys in South Boston who have bet the Patriots every week for a decade. And those guys are driving BMWs because 64% winning is higher than like professional gamblers get. Professional gamblers get 58% to 61%. When I do Blazing 5, I'm trying to get 58%. And this year Blazing 5 was aided by the fact that I went 9 and 1 in the playoffs. That's just not, I'll never go 9 in one in the playoffs ever again.
Starting point is 00:35:28 And for the record, I would not bet the Super Bowl. I don't find, when the game was pick them originally, I'd take New England. But now it's two and a half for the Rams, could be three for the Rams. I don't know if Gurley is going to play much. There's just too much uncertainty. This isn't a game I'd bet. If that line gets up to three and a half Rams, then I'd take the Rams. But I don't, you know, my takeaway is I don't know what I get from Todd Gurley.
Starting point is 00:35:53 I don't have any idea what I get from Todd Gurley. And if I don't know what I get from Todd Gurley, they're already missing Cooper Cubs. If you told me today, Todd Gurley is going to have six carries. I take New England to win comfortably. But New England doesn't win Super Bowls comfortably. They've been in eight of them. They've all been the exact same. And not only have they been the exact same, all decided on the last possession, win or lose,
Starting point is 00:36:14 they don't score in the first quarter. New England very much is the heavyweight that comes in and feels out the opponent. There's a couple of things New England does in every Super Bowl. They don't score in the first quarter. They just don't. second thing is they tend to run more in the game than they do during the season. If you look at their balance passing and running, New England generally in the Super Bowl leans a little more running than they did in the previous 17-18 games.
Starting point is 00:36:44 So they're the, they don't come to the Super Bowl and give you what you expect. They don't score early. They're one of the great first punch teams in the NFL. They lead, you know, New England leads 75% of their games. they don't in the Super Bowl. They run the ball more than throw it. So I don't know what I'm getting. There's too many uncertainties here, and I don't know.
Starting point is 00:37:04 It is interesting with Brady and LeBron this week. There's been a lot of questions about Brady and LeBron because LeBron is in that rarefied air and Brady's in his rarefied air. You know, people think these guys are very dissimilar. Because when you think of Brady, he was barely drafted. There's the Combine video where he almost looked enemically athletic. And then there's LeBron G. James, where he's the chosen one.
Starting point is 00:37:27 They say he would have been the number one draft pick, his junior year of high school. So when you think of Brady barely drafted, didn't look good in the boxer shorts, and then you think of the chosen one, hyperathletic, you think of them as very, very dissimilar. And I got to be honest with you, I think there are three things that make LeBron and Brady incredibly similar. And is Willie ready to go? Next segment. the three things to me that make them very, very similar.
Starting point is 00:37:56 Number one is they're pioneers in reinvesting in themselves. LeBron spends $1.5 million annually on his own training staff. That's unheard of. Not even Kobe did that. Tom Brady, meanwhile, does not drink during the season. He has his own clinic. So I think they are real pioneers in taking care of themselves and reinvesting money and time into their business.
Starting point is 00:38:21 body. I mean, Michael Jordan was poker, cigars, steaks, alcohol, late night. Quarterbacks used to jump into the hot tub, go out and knock down beers and smokes. I mean, quarterbacks were never like Brady. And even NBA stars like Michael were steaks, potatoes, chomping on cigars, and gambling. The second thing is, they have both completely altered finances of the sport. Brady has been taking now for a job. Brady has been taking now for a decade pay cuts restructuring his contract. He even forced Drew Brees a few years ago to go, I can't take all this money, I can't compete. You are now seen as selfish as an NFL quarterback if you are demanding top dollar. You are a liability, Kirk Cousins. You are a liability,
Starting point is 00:39:11 Matt Stafford. Tom Brady for a quarterback with his constant restructuring and not taking max contract has altered the way we look at how quarterbacks are paid. How about LeBron James? LeBron James was the, you know, if Michael Jordan made the NBA global and Magic and Bird saved it, LeBron made it mobile players. Go, don't take the most money. You'll get paid in endorsements. You'll get paid on the back end.
Starting point is 00:39:43 You'll get paid on legacy. Don't worry about standing in Toronto when making the most money. Paul George, Kyrie Irving, Anthony Davis, Kevin Durant, LeBron, LeBron. So that's the second thing they have altered the finances of their sport. And I also think the third thing that Brady and LeBron have in common is we have a different view of their position. People, let's talk Tom Brady. People used to romanticize the gunslinger. Joe Namath, Terry Bradshaw, Brett Farve.
Starting point is 00:40:15 A lot of interceptions. John Elway. It didn't really matter. That guy's a gamer. That's not what people are looking for. People are looking for accuracy. People are looking for efficiency. People are looking for 66% completion percentage in college.
Starting point is 00:40:33 Baker Mayfield's short, two-time walk-on, but he's accurate. Number one pick. Sam Darnold's bigger or more athletic. Not as accurate. A lot of questions. Brady has redefined the position. It is now a precision league, three-step drop, do not get hit, do not hold on to the ball, and arm strength is not, is really rarely disgust with quarterbacks.
Starting point is 00:41:01 LeBron James similarly has altered the view of his position. He's a six, nine and a half point guard. He invented a position, the point forward. It used to be in basketball. There was a point guard and a shooting guard, an a forward, and a power forward and there was a center. Now it's kind of label us. It's guards and bigs.
Starting point is 00:41:23 Big guys, a lot of euros, bigs and guards, wings. But we don't do, it used to be point guard was a one, shooting guard was a two, small forward, Alex English, Kiki Van deways a three, power forward, Barclays a four, centers your five. They reinvented it. Point forward. There are no labels.
Starting point is 00:41:41 Can you play? Can you handle the ball? Even now, when I think about basketball players, I'm like, can he handle the ball and shoot threes? Everybody loves Yonis, doesn't handle the ball, can't shoot threes. Everybody loves Anthony Davis, doesn't handle the ball, can't shoot threes. Not saying they can't dribble. I'm not saying they can never hit a three.
Starting point is 00:41:57 But to me, the league now is about the hardens and about the LeBrons and about the LeBron's and about the Duran's. They can take the ball up the floor. They control the temple like a quarterback, and they can shoot from anywhere. So I know, you know, you look at LeBron and Brady, and one is unathletic, and the combine and the boxer shorts and the pathetically slow 40-yard dash. And that's your image. You know, drafted a 199th, barely drafted.
Starting point is 00:42:22 And the other guy is 16 years old, the chosen one, the king, would have been drafted as a sophomore junior number one in high school. But I think they have a lot of similarities. I think they have a great deal of similarities. Some Kyrie Irving stuff. Willie McGinnis has won three Super Bowls, a decade and a half, an all-time great player. He will be joining us next hour. as Super Bowl Week. It's funny, I don't feel a huge buzz for this Super Bowl. We're talking about
Starting point is 00:42:48 this morning. There is no overriding controversy. Right. It's a very mellow Super Bowl week so far. It is an incredibly mellow Super Bowl week. But we'll have Willie McGinnis to start our next hour. Peloton's a game-changing indoor cycling bike brings energy of live studio classes to your home, up to 14 live rides a day. Learn more. Peloton bike at onepelleton.com or visit your lower local showroom. Hour 2 next in L.A. Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd, weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific. Ah, hour two, we are live in Los Angeles. This is The Herd, wherever you may be and however you may be listening. We're on IHeart Radio, Fox Sports Radio, FS1. Again, please stay warm,
Starting point is 00:43:37 dangerously cold, Arctic blast weather in the Midwest, minus 40, minus 50. degrees, terrifying for a lot of people. Young kids, older folks, stay warm. We're thinking of you. Brutal temperatures right now. I've never seen anything like it in my life. And I'm kind of a weather nerd. I like, I watch the weather channel. You are definitely a weather nerd. I'm a weather. You were besides yourself over the, the weather predictions for the Kansas City game. No, I know, I'm, I am into weather. You know, there's two things when you know you're getting old. You watch Meet the Press and the Weather Channel. Yes.
Starting point is 00:44:17 And stewed tomatoes sound fascinating. No, I still consider myself young, but I grew up. I wanted to be a weather guy for a long time. Really? Yeah, I used to watch the weather guys. I was fascinated by all the maps. And then I started playing sports, and I said, I don't want to be a weather guy. I want to be a sports guy.
Starting point is 00:44:31 So I'm into weather. And now let's go to Atlanta where they canceled school two days ago because it rained. That's not nearly as bad as what's going on in the Midwest. Willie McGinnis, 15 years in the NFL via the Coward Global Satellite Network. Three Super Bowl rings in the early 2000. You were at the beginning of this dynasty, Willie. You were at the beginning of this puppy. I want you to go back to 2001.
Starting point is 00:44:54 Young Willie McGinnis, naive Willie McGinnis. The young stylish Willie McGinnis, were you nervous? Were you anxious? What do you remember? You were nervous. I think we were more angry than anything because nobody gave us a little. chance in hell to go out and win this football game. We were huge underdogs in this game.
Starting point is 00:45:15 I think Madden or somebody said we would be losing by 30 at halftime. So whenever we talked to the press, whenever we talked to the media, it was about the Rams and how great they were. And oh, yeah, you guys are in this game too. So I think it was a little different atmosphere for us going into this game. And, you know, the result kind of came out a little bit different than what everybody expected. Now, do you feel the Rams are similarly being disrespected, that they have to constantly answer questions about Brady Belichick and the dynasty? Do you feel the Rams feel a little bit like your Patriots?
Starting point is 00:45:52 Absolutely not. I think this team is deservingly supposed to be here in this game. They've played great all year. They've been constructed in this team for the last few years to get to this point. When you look at the talent-wise, I think it's balanced across the board on both organizations. Nobody's saying that, you know, this team is way more talented than the other team. So I think the only thing you could talk about who has what advantage is probably experience. And experience doesn't win football games, but it does prepare you for what's about to come.
Starting point is 00:46:24 So I think this Rams team is confident. Their coaching staff is confident. The players are talented. You compare both rosters. Talent-wise, I think maybe more people will lean towards the Rams as far as the talent goes. So I don't think there's no underdog in this football game. I think both teams deserve to be here. Both teams will go in and compete at a high level.
Starting point is 00:46:47 And, you know, I'm excited to see how this matchup is going to break down. So you won it in 2001. You skipped a year. Then you won rings in 2003, 2004. People forget, Willie, that these early Super Bowls, those first three, Brady wasn't Brady. Take my audit, because I keep saying all week, I keep saying, Jared Goff reminds me of Brady, but the last seven years of Brady, you know, we think of him as this LeBron as superstar. You were with Tom before he was the legend, Tom.
Starting point is 00:47:20 What do you remember about him then when he was a little skinnier and not nearly as efficient? Well, you know what? The first Super Bowl didn't depend on Tom's arm, and, you know, he didn't have to go out and throw for 400, 500 yards and four touchdowns because our defense was the strength. but what you did know about him that he was going to give you an opportunity to win in a critical situation. He was going to take care of the football. He wasn't going to do anything to hurt the team offensively
Starting point is 00:47:48 and make good decisions. So I think when you look at the time from Super Bowl 36 versus now, he dictates everything that goes on offensively. Like he's been through it all. He's weathered every storm. He's been consistent throughout every two-minute situation with the game on the line, whether it's the Super Bowl or whether it's,
Starting point is 00:48:07 the AFC championship or a regular season game. So the experience, knowing how to win in these big games, playing at a certain level, that's the time now versus the time then. But I think with every single player, you see him grow every single year. It's just crazy that it's his 19th season now. And he's still in the same game, in the same situation, with the same opportunity to win another Super Bowl. We really have a battle of cultures here.
Starting point is 00:48:34 New England's about the system. Star players have to take pay cuts. The Rams, they take care of Donald. They took care of Gurley. They took care of Gurley a year early. They take care of guys. One is more star comfortable. One is more leaning to system.
Starting point is 00:48:51 Now that your career is over, 12 years, New England, three Cleveland, you made your money, you have the rings. If I told you you could walk into the league today and have the New England system or the player empowerment system. what would you choose? I would go to the New England system because the players,
Starting point is 00:49:11 you can have a great system. You look at all the systems, Colin, throughout the entire league. You can have great systems and great coaching, but you've got to have the players to go out to sacrifice individualism and buying the team and to go out and execute those systems and play at a high level and be consistent. The one thing is there, Belichick understands that he created a great system for us to play in.
Starting point is 00:49:34 But you still need a certain pedigree, a certain style of player, to go out and play at a high level in that system. You know, you look at Sony Michelle and James White and Hightower and all these guys, McCordy, all these guys that's played in this system, Tom Brady for whatever, for 19 years. If you look at guys that played consistently in this system, Julian Edelman, who was a quarterback coming in, who's now a star receiver in this league,
Starting point is 00:49:59 a system gives you an opportunity. The player, if you go out and execute and play at a certain level, level and you're consistent, that gives you an opportunity to become a superstar or whatever within a winning system. So you can have numbers and have stats and be great and come in to a certain place and don't win any games and never play in the biggest game of your life, or you can buy into something and put team versus individualism and become a star within the system and win Super Bowls. I choose that any day hands down.
Starting point is 00:50:28 William McGinnis, an all-time great, busy guy. We're going to let you go in Atlanta. We appreciate you giving us seven, eight minutes. your time, Willie. Thank you. See you back in LA. Always a pleasure, Colin. Thank you. You bet. By the way, you know, it was about two years ago, you know, one of my criticisms of the American media, myself included, I created something a few years ago called Collins right, Collins wrong on Monday. And the reason I did is because I saw so few people in the
Starting point is 00:50:58 American media, political or sports, tech media, political media, sports media, acknowledging, yeah, I whiffed on that one. So I created a segment, 10 minutes every Monday. It's our highest-rated segment, by the way. I acknowledge. I have strong opinions. Sometimes I whiff. One of my frustrations with the political media and sports media, but more of the political media,
Starting point is 00:51:19 they never admit when they're wrong. They create a narrative, and they'll be damned if they're going to change it, even if the candidate, the Senate, the congressman, the governor, has a good day, good week, good policy. About a couple years ago, the media announced that football would no longer last in 15 years. It was ending soon.
Starting point is 00:51:41 It was simply too dangerous. The NFL, always nimble, has done a tremendous job in just two years to make this game safer. One player is missing from the Super Bowl. I watched the Lakers Sixers last night. Three starters were out. One player is missing from the Super Bowl. in this violent game. Think you could acknowledge that in a tweet?
Starting point is 00:52:10 But it is interesting because the one player, most of you didn't see in college, I got lucky. His name is Cooper Cup. He went to school where I went to school, Eastern Washington. One of the reasons I like New England in this game is, I don't think the Rams have ever been the same since he got hurt. He's the only missing starter. If you look at Jared Guff's numbers with him and without him,
Starting point is 00:52:32 there is a stark, stark difference. We think Goff is tied to Gurley. No, he's tied to Cooper Cup. One key ingredient was missing in this Rams offense, and Sean McVeigh decided to cook a whole different meal. They have become much more the two-headed running back monster over a passing team. This happens to young quarterbacks as they're growing and learning the position and trying to catch up to the speed of the NFL,
Starting point is 00:53:05 they tend to have a go-to guy, a security blanket. Marcus Marriota had Delaney Walker, Dak has Amari Cooper. Andrew Luck had a guy named Donnie Avery, remember him? Not the most talented. First couple of years, Andrew Luck was always looking for Donnie Avery. Patrick Mahomes has Travis Kelsey, Carson Wentz, and Zach Ertz are tied at the hip.
Starting point is 00:53:29 Cooper Cup was Jared Goff's security blanket. And you can look at the numbers for our television audience. It's stark the difference with him and without him. Almost three yards more an attempt with Cooper Cup. Goff lost his security blanket. It may have just been one ingredient, but it clearly forced the very, very nimble Sean McVey to not try to fool anybody with the same chili in the same dish. He kind of made up a new meal.
Starting point is 00:54:07 This team has become very much about the O-line, much less about girly. It's become more about running than throwing, though I do think golf is an underrated talent. But we should acknowledge this is one of the healthiest Super Bowls I've ever seen. and the league has done a pretty good job. And it and, and duly noted, they are going to consider altering the kickoff this off season. Say what you want about the NFL. They listen to you.
Starting point is 00:54:44 You didn't like the catch rule? Changed it in the Super Bowl. You don't like that replay thing? Saw a report this morning. May be able to review PI. They listen. They've heard. Done a good job on this.
Starting point is 00:54:57 Coming up next. Danny Amandola. Somebody told me Danny Amandola doesn't like me. How could a Patriot not like me? I mean, how could a New England patriot? I'm a great American patriot to begin with. And then I'm a New England Patriot Homer. I mean, Brady clearly thinks that you think they have no skill players. Somebody told me Danny Amadola used to get mad at me. Did I ever take a shot at Damianondola? I can't keep track of the shots that you take, but people do take what you say very seriously into the heart. All right. Danny Amandola is going to be joining us. You're going to ask him? I like my slot receivers. My diva-wide receivers I have no time for.
Starting point is 00:55:32 Odell Beckham wears me out. But I like my, I like my Wes Welker. What if he just comes on the show, yells at me, and leaves? Well, what happens there? We're going to have some con. You think Baker Mayfield and I have problems. Danny Amandola next. One more herd?
Starting point is 00:55:46 The herd streams 24 hours a day, seven days a week, within the IHeart radio app. Search Herd to listen live or on demand whenever you'd like. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth? Are you a good person because you're afraid?

Like LeBron heading into the playoffs without Luca and Austin Reed. And finding ways to win no matter what. He's the smartest player to ever play the game. His IQ is at a level that we've never seen before.
Starting point is 00:58:43 And he knows without Luca and Austin Reeves, I got to manipulate the game. We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs. I think Joker's going to be exhausted. series because when they don't have Rudy in the lineup, he has to really guard guys like Nas Reid. He has to guard Julius Randall. And then he has to give us everything he gives us on the night-to-night basis on offense. And when IT's friends stop by, like Quentin Richardson, we dive into some playoff history too. Steve Nash would get that thing. That man, hell
Starting point is 00:59:12 get the flying. He running up the court, licking his fingers while he got the ball, like, after you go through a training camp with that, Isaiah, you figure it out real quick. Oh, yeah. Get your ass up and down the cruise. and you're going to get the bomb. So listen to Point Game on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome back, great to have you in. I've never had Danny Amandol on the show before. And somebody told me the other day, they said, you know, I don't know if Danny likes you.
Starting point is 00:59:38 And I said, I love my slot receivers. He was low maintenance. He's tougher than a $4 steak. He had great hands. And I've watched every single Patriot Snap for 15 years because I spent 11. and a half years in Connecticut. And with my great pleasure via the Cowher Global Satellite
Starting point is 00:59:56 Network, Danny Amandola is on the show. All right, Danny, let's clear the air. Take your shot at me. What did I do? Buddy, I was sitting in my den one morning after a victory
Starting point is 01:00:11 watching your show. I'm a huge fan of you, by the way. Oh, thank you. And you made a great point that if Tom Brady can win with mediocre scrubs like Danny Amadola. Come on. I mean, what if he had a good receiver? But Colin, I'm going in my 12th year in the league,
Starting point is 01:00:30 and I promise you, I'm a system guy. So, I mean, as advertised, as advertised. First of all, you can laugh at that. Now I feel guilty. I will buy any merchandise you put your name on. I will say this, though. I do think Belichick would be tough on me. I'm insecure enough where I wouldn't want, you know, he won't compliment Tom.
Starting point is 01:00:55 It's system over player. I get it. I got you leaving. I totally get it. 12 million, two years, Miami. But I will ask you this, Danny. You went from the winning as culture, Danny to a culture that's had its ups and downs the last 10 years. Did you think about that driving to your agent, talking to your agent, I am leaving probably the best football culture in America?
Starting point is 01:01:20 No question. And it's a football factory up there in Foxborough. It's a place where I played my best football. It's a place where I was taught by some of the best coaches. And I'm very thankful for my opportunity there. Unfortunately, and fortunately, I've seen the business side of things in this league. I've been cut twice. You know, I've been picked up off waivers.
Starting point is 01:01:43 I've reached unrestricted free agency twice. So I've been, you know, through the ringer, so to speak, in this league and and you know i wanted to keep that business mentality uh in my career and and i had opportunity to take care of my family take a contract in in miami and and i'm excited for that i'm excited for the future and and what that's going to bring don't blame you at all danny you've played with a lot of different quarterbacks i've watched every snap i know what tom does well and what he doesn't do well but take me behind the scenes the line of scrimmage what separates tom from the other really talented guys you've played with in this league?
Starting point is 01:02:25 Just his ability to communicate in the huddle, pre-snap. I don't know if you've seen a couple of clips, post-snap communication, something that you can't coach. If he's play faking to a running back and then telling him a checkdown is coming to him, that's a post-snap communication where, you know, that's unheard of. That's uncoachable. So those intangibles that Tom has, he's a student of the game, he's a perfectionist, he's created this lifestyle, this brand around TB12, and it's whether he's driving to work,
Starting point is 01:03:00 he wants to be first, or he's playing ping pong he wants to win, or he's playing in the Super Bowl, he wants to be a champion. So that's what I respect about him, and that's why I look up to him. You know, Gronk and you were tight, and, you know, after you left, and I said this, I felt, I was always shocked that Brady and Belichick didn't fight for 18 years. I mean, Kobe and Shaq won three titles, and after about six years, they wanted to strangle each other. I was always shocked Brady and Belichick, you didn't have squabbles. You know, the media said it's bad. Brady and Bill said it's not that bad. Can you admit now that it was pretty tense for a while after the
Starting point is 01:03:38 Super Bowl loss? Is that fair? Well, I wasn't in the building after the loss. I had left, And then that's when I had signed with Miami. But I can tell you firsthand, Coach Belichick coaches Tom, just like he coaches every other player. Whether you're an undrafted rookie or you're a Super Bowl MVP, he's going to coach you the same. He wants the best out of you, and he's going to demand that. So he doesn't coach anybody any different. You know, Danny, when you look at the Rams, they have Akib Talib, Robi. Those are very physical corners.
Starting point is 01:04:11 Marcus Peters. I mean, those are physical corners, and they're very talented. they have Donald and Sue and Dante Fowler? Yeah. Take me to what you think, Belichick is thinking, going in against this defense with 70-year-old Wade Phillips, Aaron Donald is virtually unblockable, veteran talented corners. Are they, is it going to be death by a thousand cuts? Can you kind of guess what they're going to do?
Starting point is 01:04:37 They're going to have to control the ball and control Donald that way, whether it's running off, guard, off tackle, I think, you know, get the ball out. quick, like you said, three-step drop. And just kind of, you know, you saw the opening drive of the Kansas City game. It was like 10, 13 play drive, 90 yards for a touchdown. It's going to take that, you know, some dinking and dunking and then just, you know, progressively moving the ball down the field, collecting first downs and controlling the clock. So, you know, I don't, I wish I had all the answers, but, you know, I'm excited to watch this game just like,
Starting point is 01:05:14 just like any other one. Do you still, because you're close with Tom, you're close with Grong. I mean, I understand. I mean, it's hard not to when you're part of a family for years. What is your gut feeling on Gronk? I've heard he's smart with his money. I've heard he's put it away. My gut feeling is he's going to move into wrestling or movies.
Starting point is 01:05:34 I think he's going to retire, Danny. I really do. He's had a hell of a career. What do you think he does in the next month? Well, first of all, I hope he balls out this week. And we get to see a couple of gronk spikes. But at the end of the day, when you have a one-word name, like Seal or Mcloven or Gronk, like you don't even need to bring your ID through the security line at the airport, I think.
Starting point is 01:06:00 You could just walk through at this point. Yeah, that's a good point. Amandola. You got to work on that, Danny. You got to get good. I got to work on it. Well, first of all, you're here on behalf of Genesis, the official luxury vehicle of the National Football League, rolling out a premium experienced current and future fans in Atlanta.
Starting point is 01:06:17 So what is Genesis? Genesis is an amazing car. It's a partnership that I've been with for a few weeks now. I got the opportunity to drive a G70 for the past week. I tell you what, I got it up to about 100 miles an hour on interstate 95. It can really fly. Don't tell anybody that, but it can really fly, man. It's extreme luxury.
Starting point is 01:06:39 You know, it's an amazing. It was the 2019 North American car of the year. and I tell you what, there's no secret. It's an awesome car. Danny Amandola, I love the fact that you watch our show and you're a good sport about it. You are always welcome on our show, Danny, and thank you so much for stopping by. Thank you, Colin. I appreciate it. Yeah, Danny Amandola, who it should be noted last year in that Jacksonville game,
Starting point is 01:07:04 Gronk got hurt, Edelman was out. Danny Amandola single-handedly, and I'm not joking on this, took apart that Jaguar secondary. How many of you remember that? Gronk was hurt, concussion, Edelman was out, and they just, Danny Amadola ate the Jaguars alive. No more criticizing Amandola.
Starting point is 01:07:27 Well, it's also a very exciting day for you, Colin. I mean, you're buying a new car today. Genesis. Yeah. He said you're going to buy whatever he's pushing. Are you doing the Goodell thing, or do you want me to touch on it? Do you got it in your run down here? I do not, no.
Starting point is 01:07:39 Okay, I will. Roger Goodell's talking. I'll get to it in just a second. Joey Taylor with the news. No, no, no, no, no, turn on the news. This is the herd line news. So Lawrence Taylor was the face of the 80s Giants that won two Super Bowls based around the defense that he led.
Starting point is 01:07:55 That mini-dynasty was also the launching point of a career of a young assistant coach at the time named Bill Belichick. So Belichick's always given a lot of praise to LT. Tom Brady also did help establish Belichick's legacy quite a bit. So let's watch his willingness in the different. between him willing to name either one of them the goat. Aaron Donald's a great football player. I wouldn't put anybody ahead of Lawrence Taylor. Lawrence did it all and did it all for 13 years.
Starting point is 01:08:27 And he dominated games. Taylor's the best I've ever seen. Certainly the best I've ever coached. Yeah, he's a great quarterback. I certainly put him up there against anybody. But, you know, I don't really feel like it's my job to, to, you know, rape people. He's...
Starting point is 01:08:48 So, LT's the greatest I've ever coached. Then Brady, it's like, well, it's not my job to rank him. You know, I... It's a very weird thing that he does. And maybe once Brady and Belichick are no longer on the sidelines together, he will change his tune on this. I have a strong feeling that he will. But he has been consistent about LT throughout his career
Starting point is 01:09:11 in saying that he is the greatest player ever. He's the second best player I've ever seen play football. If you're asking me the five best players I've seen in my life. Like literally they were different than everybody else. Brady's one. I mean, Brady's like now at 40 is still great. Lawrence Taylor's 2. I would say Reggie White.
Starting point is 01:09:27 Remember Reggie White? Unblockable. I would say Randy Moss for and somebody, I would say Walter Payton. And I know a lot of people in their 20s never saw Walter Payton. Walter Payton, there's never been a running back like Walter Payton. That's a strong list. That's hard to put close. By the way, Jerry Rice,
Starting point is 01:09:44 He was right outside that list, really close. But I've seen so many great receivers. Randy, Jerry just ran precise, brilliant routes. Randy didn't even look like other players. He was hopping over him. I mean, Randy was doing stuff. I didn't even, look at an NBA player running down the sideline. Yeah, I mean, some may argue with you on Jerry Rice,
Starting point is 01:10:03 because a lot of people consider Jerry Rice to be the greatest receiver of all times. I totally respect that. Moss, though, the guys I'm talking about, like Lawrence Taylor, if you go to YouTube and look at his video, he would grab quarterbacks with a hand and throw them. Like he looked different. Reggie White, you could not block Reggie White. I think it's hard in, and we're getting to that level
Starting point is 01:10:24 because Tom Brady has been the consistent leader and, you know, quarterback, obviously, of this dynasty. So we're getting to that level where it's like you want to feel like you have to say he's the greatest football player of all time. But unlike basketball, I just feel like it's hard to really say this is the greatest football player of all time. Because it's incomparable. Lawrence Taylor could not do what Brady is doing.
Starting point is 01:10:46 And I think it's safe to say, there's no chance Brady's going to get out there and do what LT did. And in all those other positions that you mentioned. So it's really hard to say that. Look at that video of LT, though. It's just he humiliated all pro tackles. I mean, he changed the game.
Starting point is 01:11:01 He transformed it. So I get where Bill Belichick's coming from, but he also knows exactly what he's doing. He's being a little coy there. So we talked about how Jared Godf excels at quarterback speak. He's great at the microphone. He always says the right things. He never seems to lose his cool. And he was asked about that California cool yesterday. Something that I was kind of born with and how I grew up and how I've been. And, you know,
Starting point is 01:11:24 I probably attribute it to my parents and the way they raised me and just try to understand that it's still just a game and have fun with it. You are who you are. I think there's plenty of different personalities around the league and at different positions. And I think, you know, for myself personally, I like to take a certain approach just the way I am, and I know for some guys it's a different approach, and I think whatever works is what you should do. You're just so low-key. He is so anti-L.A.
Starting point is 01:11:49 I love it. Is he anti-L.A.? I love the fact that you bring this kid into L.A., and he's just so, he's anti, he's like, whatever you get with Baker and Cam, and he's just the opposite. Well, yeah, I mean, he's, that's not his personality, though. I mean, he's not going to show up to the Super Bowl and a mink coat.
Starting point is 01:12:07 but it's pretty remarkable for such a young guy to just handle it. He has that whole, I'm going to say a bunch of words. And at the end of it, you're like, what did you say? You say anything? That was Derek Jeter's great gift. He talked for 15 years. He never said anything.
Starting point is 01:12:22 It's really perfect for quarterbacks. Quarterbacks speak. Excellent. And finally, Seekwon Barkley is the likely part of a two horse race for offensive rookie of the year. Baker Mayfield, obviously, is the other nominee being mentioned. And Seekwam was asked about that this morning. and had this to say.
Starting point is 01:12:39 I'm going to go myself. Obviously, Baker-Mayfield, multiple names on the list had a great year this year. But me personally, I feel like if you asked my peers that played against me or coaches that had to play against me and scheme against me,
Starting point is 01:12:49 who's a rookie to year, I think they would say me. Now, I thought Seigone had an incredible year. He did. He was the one shining, bright spot for the Giants in what was a very disappointing year.
Starting point is 01:13:01 But he is a running back. He is a running back, and they did go 5 and 11. I have to give it to Baker. Baker said the rookie record for touchdowns at 27 in 13 games. You know why I would give it to Baker over Sequin? Because Baker had more to overcome. The dysfunction of Cleveland, his coach was fired, his coordinator was fired.
Starting point is 01:13:21 You know, I always said this about the difference between Aaron Rogers and Drew Breeze. Look at what Drew Breeze overcame. They were the Cleveland Browns when he took the job. Katrina, they had to move. Brees had Aaron inherited a championship roster. Right. Sequin, good ownership, you know, Eli, it's a stable organization. Baker had to overcome.
Starting point is 01:13:44 People would argue Eli this year, but I do agree with you. The dysfunction in Cleveland is not comparable, especially this year. Isn't it more impressive of I told you? You said to yourself, you met a four-point student in high school, and you said, yeah, he comes from a family. They all went to Harvard. And then you met a four-point student and said, he's the first in his family to graduate, you know, high school or something. You'd be like, oh, wow. No, circumstances matter. Oh, circumstances are everything.
Starting point is 01:14:10 They definitely matter. And it doesn't take anything away from Sequin. I just, I think that Baker's overcome more. He was, he was more impressive than what he had to work with in the circumstances he had to work with. And he's, he's completely deserving of it as well. And I, I do think they're going to give it to Baker. See, Baker Mayfield went on undisputed this morning. I was ready to pat him on the back. Had he come on this show. Choices Baker Mayfield made. Joy with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by The herd line news. I agree with the media a lot on a lot of subjects and a lot of topics.
Starting point is 01:14:45 I completely disagree with the American sports media on the Ram Saints controversy. I do not believe it's ever a commissioner's job to talk about officiating. David Stern did not hold a press conference after the Sacramento King Laker debacle in game six. And it was a massive story. People thought the NBA was rigged. David Stern did not hold a press conference. Don Decker, 95 World Series, I think. Royals, Cardinals, 85, excuse me, butchered call at first base, change the world series. The commissioner didn't run down and hold a press conference. Commissioners should not get into officiating. You have a head of officials. commissioners in fact I've criticized Goodell strongly for his inability to separate when it comes to off-field matters you should have a panel a commission it should be mostly faceless dealing with situations highly controversial off the field
Starting point is 01:15:50 I don't want my commissioner commenting when a ref butchers a call which a ref butchered a call Godell spoke today in Atlanta and said exactly what I would have said. It's his first public appearance and comment on this. He said, quote, our officials are human. They're not going to get it right every time. Technology is not going to solve all these issues. The game is not officiated by robots. But we will look again at instant replay. Coaches and teams have been very resistant to adding replay for possible penalties not called on the field. That is exactly and precisely what I would have said. He's 100% right. It is not, you're called a micromanager, right? We've all had the boss sometime in my life, I don't now, but I've had a micromanager where they give you a responsibility and then they
Starting point is 01:16:42 hover over you constantly. You have a head of officials. That's what, you've got a Mike Pereira, you got a Dean Blandino. It's their job to talk about it. Refs whiff all the time. In that game earlier in the game, the refs whiffed on a face masking penalty against the Saints that would have given the Rams a first and goal. And they would have scored and it had been 2420, which would have affected the later series on the bad call against the Saints. That one, I disagree with everybody in the media. A little update on some Kyrie Irving stuff.
Starting point is 01:17:14 T.J. Hushmanzada joins us in studio as well. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific. On Fox Sports Radio, FS1 and the IHeart Radio app. It's a Big East basketball double-header tonight on FS1. The action tips off at 6 Eastern is number 10. Marquette faces Butler, then Creighton hosts St. John's at 830. Catch it all on FS1 and the Fox Sports app. Listen to this. Jamal Adams of the Jets just had lunch with Lavian Bell's agent.
Starting point is 01:17:45 A lot of strong rumors. Jets are going after Lavian Bell. T.J. Hushmanjada joining us. We've talked about this. If the Rams win the Super Bowl, it's a referendum on free agency and trades work. Is it not? The teams at field, there are a couple pieces of way. We'll try to duplicate what the Eagles did and what the Rams did if they are successful this Sunday. Used to be, TJ, those were the goofy teams. Like the poorly run teams overspent on a corner from Oakland.
Starting point is 01:18:13 Now the Rams are like, yeah, get guy. It's almost like the NBA, one-year contracts, bringing Rondo, bringing Lance Stevenson, Javille McGee. It's one-year deal. They can help you in games. It's good. I like it. I've always said the NFL mostly does everything better than the NBA,
Starting point is 01:18:27 except free agency. The NBA does free agency really, really well. It's a blockbuster. It's better than the regular season. March, my gut feeling the Rams win this game, it's a referendum on spend money on veteran players in Domen Sioux, Talib. You know, they may have a little stigma about them, but go get players. By the way, Belichick, without even trying, I think trash talked Tom Brady.
Starting point is 01:18:55 I shouldn't say didn't try. He used a word certainly. Do we have the tape on this? So he's talking about Lawrence Taylor. He has no problem saying how great he is. Watch this. Aaron Donald's a great football player. I wouldn't put anybody ahead of Lawrence Taylor.
Starting point is 01:19:10 I can't put anybody ahead of Taylor. Taylor's the best I've ever seen. Certainly the best I've ever coached. And I just wouldn't put anybody ahead of him. Okay. You laughed when you heard the word certainly. I laughed because he said he's certainly the best I ever coach. And that was just, don't ask me, is he better than Brady?
Starting point is 01:19:30 I'm telling you he's certainly the best. best player I ever coach, so don't ask me that. But I've heard Belichick talk like this about L.T. He somewhat has a man crush on him where he really respected and respects how great of a player that Lawrence Taylor was. By the way, Belichick is a bit of a trash talker, you told me. Yeah, I remember playing him one time. We're playing them. We beat the crap out of him. It was a third preseason game. We smashed them. It was like 30-something to zero at halftime. He took the starters out, like midway through the second quarter he was so mad he brought them back in to play the whole game and so I catch a ball because we came out and played I think two series into the third quarter
Starting point is 01:20:11 on their sideline and I said something to somebody and he like shut the eff up get that out of here oh he did yeah and it was just like he mumbled it under his breath so I said what I said and I just kind of laughed because we were killing them and then we played them in a regular season that same year, and they beat us. Did you have a good game? I'm sure I did. I'm sure I did. I've always played well against the better teams defensively, the Steelers, the Ravens,
Starting point is 01:20:39 the Patriots. Did the Patriots play a different than everybody else? No, with us, it was, they just played us a lot of two-man. Two-man covered, safety help order top man underneath. And so at that point, that's when it became a slot receiver's game, which it became my game, they were trying to take Chad out of it. Guys like you made some money. Yeah, it was easy in a slot.
Starting point is 01:21:01 One-on-one with safety help over the top. If you understand the coverage, it's easy to get open. You know, I would say, I don't think this Super Bowl means anything to Belichick and Brady. I think it means everything to the Rams. I wouldn't take it that far. It means a lot to both teams. It means much more to the Rams because if the Patriots lose,
Starting point is 01:21:22 what is everybody going to say? Oh, they'll be back here next year. Oh, Brady's still the best. Oh, Belichick is still the goal of all coaches. If the Rams win, just three years ago, Jared golf was a bust. You hire Sean McVeigh, everybody's like, where does this come from? He lights the league on fire. And then he comes back and does it again.
Starting point is 01:21:40 Oh, and he wins the Super Bowl. Oh, and then in 2020 we got our stadium opening up. It will be a story unlike any other. The Patriots, they want to win this. It's not like they don't have a lot to play for. It's just if they lose, everybody's going to pick the Patriots to be right back. next year. William McGinnis said something interesting earlier. I said, Willie, if you
Starting point is 01:22:00 broke into the league today knowing what you know about the system over player Patriots and the star empowering Rams, which would you choose? And he said, oh, I'd go Patriots. And I was like, because you're going to make more money with the Rams.
Starting point is 01:22:16 Who would you choose? I would go Patriots. Now see, that to me is it crazy. Because I'm a I want structure. Me personally. Me too. I want structure. I want to know if it's third and eight and they play this coverage, 100 percent, this is how the route has to be ran. So you're thinking the game, not just playing it.
Starting point is 01:22:37 Yeah, I want to be honest. I remember when I never forget this, I went to Seattle, and we're putting a play in. And I asked Greg Knapp, who was the officer coordinator. If it's too high, how do we run this route? He was like, just get open. I said, but Matt needs to understand how I'm going to run it based on coverage. Just get open. And I was like, oh, man, no, because we need to be on the same page.
Starting point is 01:23:02 Of course. We're going to practice. If it's one high, we run it this way. If it's too high, we run it this way. But too high can be cover four or cover two, we just got to understand that. And I want the structure. I want the structure of everybody being on the same page, everybody knowing what to expect from each other. That's what I prefer.
Starting point is 01:23:17 Isn't that interesting not to call it Greg Knapp, but the gap in coaching in this league, in places with certain. coaches be here then. Seattle considered well run, just get open. But you know, there's a lot of players that love that. Just get open. Like Chad, he loves that. What I got? Just get open. All right, I'll get open. Like talent wise, Chad top five receiver ever to play in the NFL. Did not work with Brady. Because Chad is one of those snap the ball, just get open type of guys, and you're not going to cover him. That's just him. And Brady's the opposite. Here's the spot. I won't throw it until I trust you're there every single time.
Starting point is 01:23:57 100%. By the way, when Brady is well known for, you know, the combine video and he's not very athletic, go to your NFL career. When you walk into an NFL locker room, the ones I've been in, these are pro athletes. I mean, I work out every day. I'm not a pro athlete. These are six, four. You guys are all cut.
Starting point is 01:24:21 Brady, when he walked into this league, did not look like your typical pro athlete. Did you ever play with a guy and you're like, man, it's a bad body? That's a good player. Oh, man, it's a feud. I wouldn't say a bad body because nobody is just really just fat. You know, even alignment, they're big, but they're solidly big. They're not just sloppy fat. For the most part, there's very rarely quarterbacks that were ripped.
Starting point is 01:24:46 I don't think I play with one quarterback that was ripped up. Give me your quarterbacks. Ketna? Kittam was not ripped up by any stretch of imagination. Carson was solid. Carson was an athlete. But he wasn't ripped up, but he was solid. He was like solid, muscular but not ripped up.
Starting point is 01:25:03 Kelly Smith was in Cincinnati. He wasn't ripped up. He was a great athlete. Baseball player. Pittsburgh Pirates trapped him. He was muscular, but he wasn't ripped up. Matt Haselbeck wasn't ripped up. And Flacco and Carson were similarly built.
Starting point is 01:25:15 Yeah. And that's the quarterback position. You don't want to have too much muscle. You want that body to be loose and fluid. Thank you. I said this years ago, I always had this theory. I remember years ago there was a quarterback that came into high school. I'm not going to rip him because he didn't have a good career.
Starting point is 01:25:28 He whiffed. And he went to Florida State. And he was a legendary waitroom guy. And I remember seeing his traps because I used to follow recruiting really closely. He's huge traps. And I'm like, dude, you're in the wrong room. You got to be in the film room, not the weight room. I don't want my quarterbacks to be ripped.
Starting point is 01:25:45 It inhibits the fluidness and the looseness of the throwing in the shoulder, especially up in here. By the way, Tebow. Tebow coming into the league by you. year two, he became a weight room junkie. Tebow got too big. Yes. He did. It inhibits the natural just fluidness of throwing a ball.
Starting point is 01:26:01 That's why there's not one quarterback that you've seen that is just extremely muscular and ripped up. It just doesn't work. Good seeing you, bud. Thank you. Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd, weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific. Ah, hour three, live in L.A. This is The Herd, wherever you may be. However you may be listening, we're on IHeart Radio, Fox Sports Radio, and FS1.
Starting point is 01:26:28 I am wearing a sweater today signifying the cooling temperatures in America. Joy Taylor is going to a nightclub in Fort Lauderdale. It's 60 degrees here, Colin. Beautiful outfit. Thank you. It's my favorite cover. I really like it. Can I talk about that or is that not cool?
Starting point is 01:26:50 I still think you're a fine journalist, I think. A journalist is a strong, strong term from one year. You're not a journalist? No, I do not consider myself to be a journalist. You're an opinionated reporter. Isn't that sound like a contradiction? I think the appropriate term would be an opinionist. Yeah, you're an opinionist.
Starting point is 01:27:07 Yeah, you've got good opinions. I gather facts and then give my opinion. That's the same way. Yeah, because journalists have, well, at least in my mind, a responsibility to just give facts. That does not mean you're not responsible. I am responsible. With Big J stands for, you know, what on the show. I'm responsible with my opinion.
Starting point is 01:27:24 Right. I'm just not responsible to give you the facts. Know what I'm giving you is my opinion. That's right. We're big fans of that opinion. By the way, the herd found on Sirius XM Channel 83. I would listen to it right now if I wasn't on the air. Coming up in 30 minutes,
Starting point is 01:27:40 New York Giants Pro Bowler, Sequin Barclay, who Joy and I admit we'd probably give second place in the rookie of the year. I wouldn't be mad if he got no, no, no, no. He was great. He's very deserving of it. Yeah, he has a little bit of Reggie Bush. he's better than Reggie, but a little bit of Reggie Bush. Later, best for last, why I think this year's Super Bowl is about to break a long-running tradition.
Starting point is 01:28:00 But the NBA has bled into Super Bowl Week. We've been talking a lot about it this week. Generally don't. Looks like Anthony Davis is in trouble, so let me get right to it. The NBA yesterday did something, and it's just a crock. You know I've been pro player forever. There's terrible billionaires. They move teams all over the place.
Starting point is 01:28:20 I mean, Cleveland before LeBron and after. a poorly run business. Doesn't matter if it's an NBA team or a waste management business. Sometimes it feels like both. It's poorly run. So yesterday the NBA finds Anthony Davis and his agent $50,000 for publicly requesting a trade. By the way, the NBA media, guys like me ask players all the time if they want to stay somewhere.
Starting point is 01:28:48 So a player can't talk about like his future. Now, think about this. The NBA encourages its star players to talk about politics, to talk about social issues, talk about the president. They encourage that. But if a player talks about hoops, there's a $50,000 fine. Well, then are you going to make sure that NBA media doesn't ask LeBron or Kyrie Irving or Anthony Davis or Kauai Leonard about where do you want to play?
Starting point is 01:29:18 You don't quite understand this. Okay. I read this morning LeBron could get fine for tampering. Really? Don't you encourage all your stars to go to social media? LeBron's on social media all the time. Isn't that the strength of the NBA? They're better than the NFL on social media.
Starting point is 01:29:34 But you're going to find them as long as they tweet about the president, social issues, policy. But if you tweet about a basketball player, we're going to find you $50,000. This is a charade. It's a con job. There's always been two stories in sports. the one league sell you and then the truth. This is a con job. The NBA loves this.
Starting point is 01:29:58 Adam Silver absolutely loves this.
Starting point is 01:30:24 So as all the sports radio stations in America, the 6,000 sports radio stations are jumping into their NFL talk, what do you know the story broke at 7 a.m. on Monday of Super Bowl Week and flooded every show. This is the big con. The NBA loves this. You don't think the NBA loves. LeBron's been out for a month.
Starting point is 01:30:45 The ratings have been sagging since he left. You don't think they like LeBron. Laker Anthony Davis talk, Kyrie to the Laker talk. They love this stuff. This, in America today, NFL is king and the season's winding down. NBA's number two.
Starting point is 01:31:03 And it's very good on social media. And it's stars drive the league. NFL is kind of driven by the system, kind of the brand, the shield. NBA is driven by it stars. You don't think Adam Silver loves that his stars are getting talked about on Super Bowl week? that I'm not leading my show.
Starting point is 01:31:22 Adam Silver's told me before. He listens. He watches all this stuff. He takes the temperature of the room. Sports is all about real estate. And February, the NFL has been encroaching on the NBA's real estate for years. They've moved around free agency. They can move combines and drafts to get in the way of the NBA.
Starting point is 01:31:41 This is the NBA firing back an arrow. Oh, it's Super Bowl week. Oh, it's Super Bowl week. Let's just make sure stories get out. Listen, this is not dangerous for the league. What they're doing is they're patronizing New Orleans. Adam Silver in the league are going, shame on you guys. Shame on you, Rich Paul.
Starting point is 01:32:01 Shame on you, Anthony Davis. That is terrible. Here's a $50,000 fine. You're just patronizing New Orleans, which has had, let's be honest, a really crappy week.
Starting point is 01:32:30 Come on. And it's also not dangerous for the league. Basketball from AAU to college basketball to the NBA has always been about a handful of stars controlling the league. The NBA has always been about dynasties, the Celtics, Bill Russell 111, and then you went into the Lakers, Jerry Webb, and Wilt and Gail Goodrich, and then you had the Pistons and then MJ and then Shaq and Kobe and then, and now we have the Warriors. The Miami Heat thing was like very, very close to a dynasty, two titles four years. It's good.
Starting point is 01:33:04 The only problem for the NBA is when the dynasty's boring like the Spurs dynasty was. But basketball at the AAU level, three best high school basketball players in America last year all chose Duke. This is what basketball players do. Stop watching the movie Hoosiers. It doesn't exist. That was a great movie. I loved Hoosiers. That's not what real basketball is about today.
Starting point is 01:33:25 So star players moving. I'll tell you what's dangerous for the NBA. It's not stars going to big brands. What is absolutely dangerous for the NBA is seven teams were tanking last year. That's not good. This year, by March, you're going to have about 10 tanking trying to get that kid at Duke, Zion Williamson. You already got about five.
Starting point is 01:33:47 teams actively tanking. That may double in about a month. That's a problem for the NBA. This is great, great news for the NBA. And a 50,000 fine is a complete con job. It's just it's pretending they care about New Orleans. All right, let's talk some football. Tom Brady is five and three in Super Bowls. Let's say he loses. He's five and four. Is he no longer the goat? Let's say he wins and goes six and three. Joy, is he even goadier? He's the greatest goat.
Starting point is 01:34:28 He's the greatest of the goat goats. He'll be the goadiest goat. Let's say Belichick wins and goes six and three. He is the best coach. Oh, wait, we know it. He loses and goes in five and four. He's still the best coach in the history of football. This Super Bowl has no impact on the Patriots
Starting point is 01:34:48 outside of the joy of winning. It will not affect Belichick's legacy. It has no effect on Tom Brady's legacy. Best coach, best quarterback. Philip Rivers in this game, that would affect it. But I'll tell you, if the Rams win this game, it is a complete game changer for a lot of people. Let's start with Sean McVeigh,
Starting point is 01:35:14 33-year-old head coach Super Bowl champ. beats the reigning American domestic football genius. It would be massive for Sean McVey. Sean McVey goes into an elite group. He's the next Bill Walsh. He's the next Bill Belichick on the offensive side of the ball. Number two, Jared Gough. Kind of looks like Brady, both from Northern California.
Starting point is 01:35:43 Brady grew up idolizing Montana, Goff watching Brady, West Coast kids, genius head coach. Oh, Jared Goff is the closest thing potentially over the next 15 years to Tom Brady. It would be huge for the city of Los Angeles. This has always been a Lakers town. Football is still a growing business in Los Angeles. The Dodgers are established. USC football, Lakers are established.
Starting point is 01:36:14 This would be a movement. This would be pulling people away. Super Bowls have a way of changing cities. It would also be number four, big for other stars in this league. The Rams went heavily into free agency and into big diva names. Historically, that was dumb guy territory. Smart GMs did not do that. But for guys like Levian Bell, guys on the market, it is big for players.
Starting point is 01:36:45 and let me add this. If the NFL had to pick a side who wins this game, they'd want Los Angeles. About five or six years ago, I worked at the other place. I was told by an executive, the NFL wanted to become more entertainment-driven. They wanted, they understood they were now a television show more than a sport.
Starting point is 01:37:10 Los Angeles is the entertainment capital of North America. since I heard that six years ago, Vegas is going to have a team. Los Angeles has two teams. They're moving the NFL combine here. They've okay and completed about 60% of a new stadium and Super Bowls and the NFL network will take place in that stadium. This would be good for the league.
Starting point is 01:37:39 McVe, Goff, City of L.A., free agency as a whole, NFL. Well, this game means nothing for Tom Brady's legacy. Absolutely nothing for Belichick. But it is a game changer if the Rams win. Coming up next, I'm not sure this is true. It has been suggested that it is. And I think it's worth examining with Kyrie Irving, potentially leaving the Celtics and becoming a Laker.
Starting point is 01:38:08 I don't know if it's true, but there's an angle on this story that sounds. Sounds like it really could be, and that's coming up. One more herd? The herd streams 24 hours a day, seven days a week, within the IHeart radio app. Search Herd to listen live or on demand whenever you'd like. Last night, a blown call changed a game. Starting point is 01:39:32 Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on Earth? Are you a good person because you're afraid?
Starting point is 01:39:56 Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. And on my podcast, The Clivert Show, I'm bringing you conversations about all kinds of stuff. Like being an internet famous referee. We're in the middle of a game. This linebacker, this linebacker walks up to me.
Starting point is 01:40:31 He goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her. What? Time out. Quarterback on office blue of 42. Hey, ref, my mom, I want you. you to wave at her. What? Where's he at? Hey, Miss Parker. Listen to the Clifford Show on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. What's up, fam? It's Isaiah Thomas. And I'm C.J. Toledano, and our podcast Point Game is about
Starting point is 01:41:01 defining the odds. Like LeBron heading into the playoffs without Luca and Austin Reed. And finding ways to win no matter what. He's the smartest player to ever play the game. His IQ is at a level that we've never seen before. And he knows. Without Luca and Austin Reeves, I got to manipulate the game. We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs.
Starting point is 01:41:21 I think Joker's going to be exhausted this series because when they don't have Rudy in the lineup, he has to really guard guys like Nas Reid. He has to guard Julius Randall. And then he has to give us everything he gives us on the night-to-night basis on offense. And when IT's friends stop by, like Quentin Richardson, we dive into some playoff history too.
Starting point is 01:41:39 Steve Nass would get that thing. That man, hell get the fly. He running up the court, licking his fingers, why he got the ball. Like, you go through a training camp with that, Isaiah, you figure it out real quick. Get your ass up and down the court, and you're going to get the ball. So listen to Point Game on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Cold and flu season, Vix Synex nasal spray, works up to 12 hours. Use his directed.
Starting point is 01:42:05 I once ate half a jar of it when I was a child. Don't do that. If you're sick, I give me a lot of people, cold flu, A lot of bad temperatures out there. How old were you? 34. I think I was like six. You know, I was a young child.
Starting point is 01:42:21 I was experimenting, you know, back then. Very experimenting. Experimental with the Vic Cynix nasal spray. Came in a jar back then. This is great for this weather. Well, California, it's 60 degrees. Here's something that's been thrown out. I am not suggesting that it's true,
Starting point is 01:42:38 nor did I come up with this. Nick Wright, who works at this network, feels that Danny Aange made a huge gaffe recently. Now, it should be noted the NBA has been very outspoken against Donald Trump. Steve Kerr coach of the Warriors trolls him regularly on social media. Greg Popovich trolls him regularly. LeBron James trolls our president regularly. It's an anti-Trump league. They've been outspoken about his policies.
Starting point is 01:43:10 they don't want to go to the White House. Like it or not, that I'm just landing out for you. So Danny Aange said this recently. He was talking about LeBron, and he said this. His career's not over. I'm just like to, you know, why he's saying that? I don't know. You know, maybe he thinks that that sells.
Starting point is 01:43:27 Maybe he's taking the Donald Trump approach, trying to sell himself. I don't know. Okay, Nick Wright suggested it was a big deal. Surprise more folks didn't seize on it. It's not an exaggeration. to say it was one of Danny Aange's biggest mistakes of his entire tenure. I will say the reason this to me is interesting is because I don't believe, I think Joy can attest to this having worked with me for six months. I don't believe in coincidences and I don't believe
Starting point is 01:43:54 in fate. Most things are scheduled. Most things happen for a reason. If you get hit by a truck, not to be anti-religious, but you basically walked into traffic. I don't think anybody upstairs controlled it. You should probably look both ways. I don't believe in coincidences in business. I've worked at multiple, you know, companies. Things are released. Leaks happen because people want leaks to happen. And Kyrie Irving, before Danny Ains said that, was all Celtics. I'm going to resign.
Starting point is 01:44:24 I'm very happy here. Danny Ains said that. And who is the team Danny Aange hates more than any other? Lakers. Who's the player who's been the personal roadblock to his Celtics last six, seven years? LeBron. And yet after that Trump comment, Kyrie Irving starts talking Celtics, Lakers, LeBron James, the one thing that would get under Danny Aang's skin.
Starting point is 01:44:55 Secondly, Anthony Davis, story comes out this week. Anthony Davis comes out and says, I am not interested long term in New Orleans. Now, within a day or two, six, seven teams, Knicks, Raptors, bucks, Lakers. All leaks, they're all interested. Yet one team, remember who represents Anthony Davis, Rich Paul, LeBron's friend, Clutch Sports, a story leaks that Anthony Davis, the Celtics is not where he wants to go.
Starting point is 01:45:26 So I'm supposed to believe Kyrie, who was all in on Boston, post-Age Trump, quote, just happened to be interested in LeBron and the Lakers, two major arch nemeses to Danny Aynnege and Anthony Davis, of all the organizations, he's more interested in Toronto and Milwaukee than he is Boston. I'm not saying it's right. I'm saying it's interesting. It's something to discuss, but I feel like it's a bit old.
Starting point is 01:46:01 LeBron is very, very vocal when he feels like some, especially when it comes to Trump things. So I think this is settled as far as LeBron and Ainge goes. You do think it is? Yeah. Now other players maybe looking at it like, because we know what Gilbert, Dan Gilbert, support of Trump was rumored to have a big part in why LeBron wasn't comfortable there anymore and had a huge problem with it. So other players looking at it maybe, but.
Starting point is 01:46:31 It just feels like it could be something. Something. Not everything. Well, when it comes to NBA free agents, we will follow any breadcum available. We will look at follows. We're just like lights. You and I are like birds.
Starting point is 01:46:46 We're just trying to find breadcrums. Everything means something. I don't know how much there is to this, if anything at all. But it's NBA free agency. So that's how to look at it. Don't let your age beat you. Want to feel stronger, younger, more energy. Go to MDrive.
Starting point is 01:47:00 BuyMDrive.com code heard 20% off. BuyM Drive. You can also get it at Walgreens and Walmart. Joy Taylor with the news. No, no, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. So Kurt Warner and Marshall Falk led the greatest show on earth to a Super Bowl victory over the Titans 19 years ago in Atlanta.
Starting point is 01:47:21 And this Sunday in the same city, Jared Goff, will try to deliver the franchise's first title since that game. And Kurt Warner appeared on the Amper Patrick's show yesterday and offered Goff some advice before the biggest game of his life. One thing I would tell him is that you have to realize this game is like every other game. game when you get between the lines. I look back at my three Super Bowls. The first one, we were at 16 to nothing. It was tied 16, 16 to the fourth quarter. Just talked about the one in 2001. We were down 17 to 3, tied up at 17 to 17 with two minutes to go. Every game, even big games like this with high stakes, they have their ebbs and flows. Momentum shifts very quickly, and that's what I would tell him is you got to ride the waves of the Super Bowl.
Starting point is 01:48:04 Kurt Warner was good. I miss Kurt Warner. He was good. Yeah, he was. We played some sound of Goff earlier. He's great at the podium. He's a very, well, what they described him as California, cool. He's a very consistent, emotional guy. He's got the traits I like is that the world's, you know, that New Orleans game, the world was imploding around him and Goff was just sort of centered in. You know, that's why I like my Russell Wilson.
Starting point is 01:48:32 I like my Jared Goff. I like my Andrew Locke. I think the Boer 4. The Boer 4. I like people that in the face of K. can bring it down. I don't want emotion at the quarterback position. I want talent. I want coachability. I want maturity. I'm not, you know, I said, Cam and Baker would wear me out. I don't mind a lift and excitement and energy. I just don't like it on the other end. I don't,
Starting point is 01:48:54 I don't like the down body language. Like you can never allow the circumstances of the game to overwhelm you emotionally in a negative way. Now, in a positive way, yes, because there's just too many waves. There's too many changes throughout the game. You're going to pump your fist. You're the leader. You have to be consistent. And that's a big part of what the Patriots preach.
Starting point is 01:49:16 This is just another game. Don't look at it as the Super Bowl. Look at it as another game and you won't get nervous and ride those emotions. So Todd Gurley is one of the NFL's most devastating weapons, although as of late it's been a little interesting for him. CJ Anderson has bulldozed his way to
Starting point is 01:49:32 at least 120 yards on the ground in three of his past four games. Now, according to Mike Freeman, quote, an NFC head coach feels he's a better fit for how the Rams' offensive line blocks. Teams who have game plan against them say Anderson doesn't need clean lanes to be effective, and defenses have a harder time tackling him because of his physicality than they do girly. I think this is a little bit of recency bias with C.J. Anderson. Yeah, I don't buy this. I like C.J. Anderson. I actually do.
Starting point is 01:49:59 I just think, you know, it's like LeBron's off for a month, and suddenly I'm supposed to believe that it's Anthony Davis's team. You know, it's like, I'm sorry. I mean, can you imagine if marriage worked that way? You'd never go on a business trip. You know, you're out the door, everybody forget you your 15 years of marriage. That he exists. I mean, Todd Gurley, he is great.
Starting point is 01:50:17 And this is, to Todd Curley's credit, this is the one space that keeps me worried about the Rams. I don't know what to expect from Todd Gurley. I totally agree. If you told me Gurley was healthy and we'd get 20, I don't even carry yards. If you said, Gurley's going to get 19 touches. I'd be like, all right, I'm good. We got a great Super Bowl.
Starting point is 01:50:36 If he's on an exercise bike in the second quarter, I think the Patriots can win in a blowout. That's not a knock on CJ Anderson. He's been huge for them. He's been instrumental, but it's just you need your stars in the biggest game. Finally, the Patriots have been on this very strange. Nobody believes in us press tour all year. Let's listen to Julian Edelman, Chris Hogan, and Tom Brady on just a little bit of that content.
Starting point is 01:51:00 You're too old. You're too old. You're too old. You're too slow. We got no skill players. We got no deep. We got nothing. We're still here.
Starting point is 01:51:18 He is just, he looks, I will say this. It's borderline embarrassing, Colin. They're going to their ninth Super Bowl. They have five Super Bowl rings. Isn't it weird, though? Brady just physically has not aged. I mean, that's what eating good and taking care of your body does. Who can do that, though?
Starting point is 01:51:37 Didn't go a football season without a beer. Well, speaking of beer, that's what the story is about. The Boston-based Sam Adams Brewery is embracing this whole, we're too old. We can't make it happen anymore, narrative. So they've made a limited release, goat-themed beer. And actually, it says we're too old. I believe it says we're too old. We're too old, too slow, still here.
Starting point is 01:52:00 That is what the side of the can says. Yeah, goat beer. Too old too slow still here. Goat beer is not bringing me to the bar. I'm sure that there will be a whole crowd of willing beer drinkers there to consume that. The first 199 people in honor of the 199 selection will be able to get it. It's a whole thing. They've truly put a great twist on it, though.
Starting point is 01:52:27 If I told you, you can't have any alcohol for our spring rating book, and it will help the show. Could you abstain? Yeah. Oh, God, I couldn't. Really? I mean, I would not be happy about it. How much will it help the spring rating book? 8%.
Starting point is 01:52:43 I follow up questions. I'm sorry. 8%. 8%. 8%. You'll be so focused and clear that it'll get a bonus. Not necessarily. No, then it.
Starting point is 01:52:56 No, thank you. What's in it for you? I mean. I would have asked the same question. If you told me I get ratings would go up an extra 8% next fall, if I didn't have a beer for the entire football season. I'd have to think about that. I'd have to look at my bonus structure.
Starting point is 01:53:12 I don't know. It's a very good question. There's important follow-ups to that. Joy with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Hurd-Lod News. Played almost a decade in the NFL.
Starting point is 01:53:24 Went to the University of Oregon. And then his brother Mitchell Schwartz is now a Pro Bowl offensive line for the just-defeated Kansas City Chiefs. Via the Coward Global Satellite Network, Schwarz, former NFL offensive lineman. By the way, if I told you, okay, no alcohol, you have to go on a super lean diet, but you'd win the Super Bowl, but the quality of life would dip for the next five months. Tell me as an NFL athlete, you were a committed guy. Could you do it?
Starting point is 01:53:56 And I guess my question, on a bigger note is, are you kind of amazed that Brady is as committed as he is? Well, I would do it for myself. I've never won a Super Bowl. So, of course, I would sacrifice something. It probably would be carbohydrates, not beer. I'm not a big beer drinker, don't know alcohol. I have to say no pizza, no French fries, no chips for five months. It'd be very hard, but I do it.
Starting point is 01:54:18 I've never won before. So to your point, to do this over and over and over and every single year hone it down. Yes, it's impressive. And we see he still has the drive, still has the passion. Nine Super Bowls now. It is pretty amazing. Eventually you tire of this life. But when you make it a lifestyle like he has, this is all he knows.
Starting point is 01:54:35 All he knows is being healthy and eating the right way and preparing the right way. So it's actually probably not surprising that he's been able to do this for so long. You know, Vegas initially, I tried to make this point yesterday, Jeff. You do a little gambling here and there. You've talked about that. You've embraced it fully. One of the things I said yesterday is let's not forget that the Vegas guys made the Rams the favored initially. But because of the public money, they had to make New England.
Starting point is 01:55:01 England now almost a field goal favorite. So Vegas, generally right, thinks we're going to have Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, middle of the ring. What do you sense? Look, all Patriots Super Bowls have been within one score, right? There's no surprise that this is what the game is going to be. I think the outcome between them and the Falcons was the, you know, well, last year, I guess it was eight points, but pretty much have all been within one score. So the game is going to be close.
Starting point is 01:55:28 You're right, I would have loved to bet the Patriots probably at plus one. when an opportunity to do so. All the money right now is on New England, but I will say this. Look, they're not the better team than the Rams. The Rams are the better football team, but the Chargers were the better football team, the Chiefs were the better football team,
Starting point is 01:55:44 and the Patriots keep finding ways to win. The number two and a half, I'm not sure I love. I take them probably on the money line if I were to bet the Patriots here, but I don't know how you bet against them. I mean, they keep proving you wrong or the public every single week. I think the public saying, look, enough with this.
Starting point is 01:55:57 We're going to bet on the guy who's been here before, who's one and five Super Bowls. There's no surprise that. That's where the money is at. But I do wonder where this line will end up on Sunday when the Sharps start weighing in. Here's the thing. Here's my one big advantage for the Rams. They're getting crushed by fans because they don't deserve to be here because of the bad call.
Starting point is 01:56:17 And that's all they're hearing for two weeks. You're lucky to be here. And then everybody's betting against them. So Sean McVeigh has this two-pronged attack. The country's anti-Rams, they shouldn't be here. The Patriot to the dynasty. In your career, did you ever go into a game where you thought, we got better players and we're getting no respect?
Starting point is 01:56:41 And does it matter? Well, I think it does matter because you need any extra motivation this time of year. You've played so many weeks of the year, right, 20 weeks of the year plus training camp, and any little motivation is definitely a factor. But remember, the Patriots also feel this way. Even though the money's all on them, everyone's picking the Patriots, they also have this underdog mentality. The reason why I liked them last week to beat the Chiefs.
Starting point is 01:57:03 I said this other day, I secretly bet the Patriots. Obviously, my brother plays for the Chiefs. I didn't really want anyone to know that I thought the Patriots were going to win that game just because, again, this underdog mentality really works for them. So they both have this going for them. The Rams can say this, and the Patriots have convinced themselves that no one likes them. It's pretty remarkable what they've done. So I think both teams will use this to their advantage.
Starting point is 01:57:23 And look, it's obviously the last game of the year. You have to go out and give everything you have. but that little extra motivation is very helpful this time of year. By the way, without giving away family secrets, I'm going to ask you to give away a family secret. When you talk to your brother Mitchell Schwartz after the game, did he have any comments about New England, their personnel? I mean, was there anything that stuck with you he talked about?
Starting point is 01:57:45 I think he thought they would bring pressure more in Mahomes more often, one way they call zero pressure, right, where you bring everyone who's not on a wide receiver. We saw them do that a lot against the chargers, a lot against the chiefs previously, in their previous game of the year. But there's not much surprise, right? They double Tariq Hill.
Starting point is 01:58:02 They run those twist in the middle, which we knew what they were doing. It's what they had done most of the players because they don't have a front four. They can get home really without bringing pressure. So it wasn't much of a surprise. I remember, we talk about adjustments. The Chiefs almost didn't even get through their first 15 plays before halftime. So there's not much adjustments to be made. They may even have them.
Starting point is 01:58:19 They scored 31 points on 32 plays in the second half. Yeah. You know, Jared Goff, I thought, outplayed. breeze. And when you look at Goff, you know, I've said he reminds me of kind of a young Brady who we used to mock after the Combine. What do you see with Goff? I think I heard Andrew Whitworth talk about this. And, you know, they believed in golf, but the amount of growth he's shown the last couple of weeks in these
Starting point is 01:58:47 playoff games, remember, the first quarter of the same game, he could not hear. He had to, they had to replace his earpiece with a ladder earpiece. He'd to cover his ears to hear, and then they come in the second half, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, the big plays that he made, that throwed the end of the first half, the cooks kind of got him back on track. So he has done everything we've asked of him. I know the question was, I have the same question, too. He's never playing a big road game in this magnitude in his career.
Starting point is 01:59:09 New Orleans is a hard place to play. We knew Breeze was 6-0 heading in that game. I think he grew leaps and bounds in that game. You're right. Everyone kind of doubt him. We heard his comments about the sun setting during hard knocks. I think everyone kind of laughed at him. But he looks like he's put on weight.
Starting point is 01:59:22 He's got more mature, obviously. He's growing up now third year in the NFL, and he's what you want in a franchise quarterback. By the way, when you, you know, you look at your career, you had a great career, and your brother has a great career. You know, I've said that the Patriots have 12 draft picks. I think Gronk retires. They'll have a little cap space.
Starting point is 01:59:41 You know, I don't see, I don't think this is going to be a fall off a cliff dynasty, even if New England loses. I think they're potentially back here next year. I mean, give me your kind of feeling with 12 draft picks. Most of their best players, it should be noted, Jeff, for like 27, 28 years old. If New England lost, what does it mean to them? Well, I don't know if it means very much to them. I think this game actually means more for the Rams in general.
Starting point is 02:00:06 For Goff and McVey, they were to win this game to beat the evil empire and the Patriots. If New England wins or loses, I don't think it changes what we think about Tom Brady. What, he's five and four now or he's six and three. I don't think it matters much, but for the Rams, it matters a lot. So to your point, I think the Patriots just continue it. Brady wants to play, Belchick wants to play. You mentioned the draft picks. The offensive line is all back next year, which has been a big part of what they've done,
Starting point is 02:00:27 Gronk. They have to replace him, obviously, if he retires somehow. But you have Michelle. You actually bring Isaiah win back as a draft pick from last year on the offensive line. You found ways to rush the passer. Yeah, they're going to be good. And their division is not as good, obviously, but the culture are going to be good next year. The chiefs will be back next year. So they'll have better teams than AFC
Starting point is 02:00:43 to contend with. Good stuff. Jeff Schwartz, former NFL offensive lineman. Brother of Mitchell Swartz, who's a pro bowl offensive lineman. Good talking to you, bud. Thank you, bud. Take care. Coming up, by the way, Seekwan Barkley got locked out of there was a the convention center. There was some security
Starting point is 02:01:01 breach or something. He got locked out. But I like Jeff Schwartz, too. So he just stopped on by. Is that it? Yeah, Sequan Barkley heard I'd vote for Baker Mayfield. Rookie of the year. He just bailed on the interview. Listen, Danny Amandola acknowledged he used to hate me and he likes me. Even Baker when he left the set, I think kind of liked me. I think when you're around me, you like me. I think when you watch me, you hate me.
Starting point is 02:01:25 You win people over? Yeah, Baker Mayfield did not. go on our show this morning. You know what? Maybe he flips back off. You know how I said the Browns are going to finish second or third next year? Seller. Two and 13, two and 14. Not that I'm petty. They're going to win two games. No, I'm joke. They'll win. They're going to be around 500. They'll be a 500-ish team. That's not negative. Given their recent history, that's very positive. It's actually a sign of consistency. Yeah, Cleveland, listen, eight and eight, nine and seven, they're throwing a parade. I mean, you can do.
Starting point is 02:02:00 Probably. Baker the Grand Marshal of it. Coming up next, why I think this year, Super Bowl is about to break a long-running tradition. There's a lot of terms, dealer price, list price, invoice. Here's what's not. You could save three grand off MSRP if you go to truecar.com and check out their true price.
Starting point is 02:03:16 Joy, it's Super Bowl week. And so today we have a Super Bowl edition of Buy sell and hold time to buy sell Colin will decide if he'll buy buy it sell
Starting point is 02:03:32 or hold buy sell or hold buy sell or hold Jared Goff will have more passing yards than Tom Brady well so far in the post season Goff is averaging 287 yards passing
Starting point is 02:03:47 and Brady's averaging 280 yards passing and it should be noted that's Goff going up against that unbelievable Dallas Cowboys defense. But also throw this in. The Rams, as underdogs, could likely be behind late in the game, forcing them to throw more. So, John, bye, bye, bye, bye,
Starting point is 02:04:09 I think Jared Goff will have better total yardage numbers than Tom Brady. By seller hole, this will be the first Belichick Brady Super Bowl decided by more than one possession. Well, this is interesting because the Rams had half, Half of their, over half their games decided this year, nine of the RAM games decided by more than one possession. And the Patriots had 12 of their games this year decided by more than one possession. I am also predicting a high scoring football game. So John, by, bye, bye, bye, I think the higher a score isn't a game, the more chance it's an eight-point game.
Starting point is 02:04:49 I think we're going to have turnovers. I think we're going to have big plays. and I think whatever side wins, it's going to be by 8 to 9 points. Buy seller hold, a quarterback will win Super Bowl MVP. Well, I mean, that's generally what we expect, right? Here's something to consider. This is the most run-centric Patriot team, I think, maybe ever since Tom Brady's early years. And since the loss of Cooper Cup, the Rams are much more run-centric.
Starting point is 02:05:21 So you have very good running games and excellent. These could be the two best offensive lines right now and the two healthiest offensive lines in football. In fact, this postseason, the Rams and the Patriots have the most rushing yards per game of any teams in the playoffs. They've combined for 12 rushing touchdowns this postseason. So John, sell, sell, sell. I think a running back more likely than Goff and Brady is the MVP. Buy seller hold, Tom Brady will throw more interceptions than Jared Gaw. All right. So let's state the facts. First, in the last four games, Gough has thrown one pick, Brady's four. All right?
Starting point is 02:06:01 Goff tends to be more comfortable throwing to the sidelines, young quarterback away from traffic. Brady tends to be more comfortable throwing the ball in between the hash marks, more congested. I also think the Rams will put more pressure on Brady than Trey Flowers and the Patriots front will put on Jared Gough. Also, if you look at each one's favorite weapon, the Rams do a lot of bootleg action, easier throws to tight ends, and a Robert Woods who's fast enough to separate. Whereas the primary targets for Tom Brady are Gronk, who does not separate, and Edelman, who can't. catches everything, but does also not separate. So Tom throws into more congested areas and will this Sunday with more pressure on him. So John, bye, bye, bye, I think Brady will throw a pick.
Starting point is 02:06:57 I don't think golf will. My seller hold Julian Edelman will be the leading receiver in the game. Edelman's had a very good postseason. Do you realize that Julian Edelman leads the National Football League in receiving yards this postseason with 247? First of all, he's got deceiving speed. He's not a great separator, but he's pretty quick. He is, as a slot guy, he's real quick. He gets open.
Starting point is 02:07:22 Over the last 25 years, Edelman has the most career receiving yards in postseason. Isn't that remarkable? Is that, remember, in these big games, and you have two weeks to prepare, generally the star perimeter receiver is doubled. You don't spend all week worrying about slop receiver. Well, and Julian Edelman and Tom Brady are very comfortable. together. Incredibly so. Whereas I do think if Belichick had a game plan, it would be to take Robert Woods
Starting point is 02:07:52 away from Jared Goff. So John... Bye, bye, bye! Yeah, I think Julian Edelman, Beard and All, will be the leading receiver in this Super Bowl game. And last one. By Seller-Hold. Colin, you will recognize at least three songs in Maroon 5's halftime show. All right, they have a song called Sugar. right? I'm going to go, sure. I don't know.
Starting point is 02:08:21 Yeah, they do. They have a lot of songs with the word loving it. They have a song called Payphone. I'm actually impressed you know that song. They have a song. Oh, oh, oh. Oh, God, I can't. It's their biggest hit.
Starting point is 02:08:38 Moves like Jagger. No. Okay. This love. Don't they have this love? That's this. That's what you're here. Yeah, this love.
Starting point is 02:08:51 Yeah. In your face, people that know music. I was supposed to give you a hold on this one. But I feel like it's actually a buy. I think you're going to get at least three. Would you not acknowledge, Joy, this makes me more attractive as a male. Knowing Maroon 5 songs. And then I've got a little twist to my...
Starting point is 02:09:14 Not really. I mean... I knew this week. called disloaf. I'm not going to throw shade on Maroon 5. You don't like Maroon 5? I mean, it's that they're... The NFL
Starting point is 02:09:24 canceled their press conference today. Why was that? So everyone wouldn't make fun of it. Which was the smart thing to do. Do people make fun of Maroon 5? I don't think they're going to... I don't think they can't be because of bad. People have a problem with whoever does the halftime show, as a rule. I know people thought they should celebrate kind of the wild, popular hip-hop scene in Atlanta, right?
Starting point is 02:09:41 Well, yeah, the pushback at first was that there's tons of... Atlanta's like... of Atlanta artists that should have been considered first for that. Atlanta is one of the top places in the country for like emerging hip-hop artists. Yes. Yes. It's huge for music.
Starting point is 02:09:56 Not just hip-hop, R&B too. And, you know, obviously a lot of people, a lot of artists turned down doing the Super Bowl because they're standing with Kaepernick. So that played a part in them canceling it. You've got to be honest. As a staff, can we raise your hand if you were surprised I pulled off sugar? I was surprised you knew two songs. Pay phone, and this is love. I figure you would recognize the songs but have no idea what the names were.
Starting point is 02:10:23 You would just go, I've heard that. Throw any random song up and I'll tell you the artist. Now I'm getting cocky. Yeah. For sure. Greg Toey, he said slow down, boss. Let's not go crazy here. Tomorrow, Shannon Sharp,
Starting point is 02:10:39 Javieras Leonard, the shockingly great rookie linebacker for the Colts. Greg Olson, who's going to be a super. Star and Broadcasting is going to stop by our show as we are live from the Super Bowl in Atlanta. I have given this game great thought. There's been 10 playoff games. I'm 9 in 1, straight up. And I came to a conclusion last night. And so yesterday I got home and I had two hours to burn and I just went way deep in data.
Starting point is 02:11:12 I went way deep in data. And it's funny. there's a lot of people, Charlie, was it Charlie Weiss said New England in a blowout? Madden, the game Madden predicted Rams in a blowout, so we shall see. All right, we'll see you tomorrow. Shannon Sharp, Greg Olson, Darius Leonard, it's the hurt. Last night, a blown call changed a game. This morning, the internet lost its mind, and nobody's telling you exactly what happened.
