Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter.

This is Clivert Taylor the Fourth. And on my podcast, The Cliverts Show, I'm bringing you conversations about all kinds of stuff. Like being an internet famous referee. We're in the middle of a game. This linebacker, this linebacker walks up to me. He goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her.
Starting point is 00:01:26 What? Time out. Quarterback on office blue with 42. Hey, Wreck, my mama want you to weigh better. What? Hey, Miss Parker. Listen to the Clifford show on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast.

We're digging into the biggest surprises of the season. And I'm looking back on some of my greatest playoff moments. If we didn't talk ever again, I was harmed. you just understood.
Starting point is 00:02:03 That's how personal it got. Wow. Then after that game seven, Mark keep coming until he's like, you know I love you, dog. You know, it's all love. This was just playoffs. This was just basketball.

Starting point is 00:02:40 Ah, here we go. We are loaded on a Wednesday. Thanks so much for stopping by. We're the herd. Wherever you may be and however you may be listening in LA, we're on IHeart Radio, Fox Sports Radio. We're on FS1. Joy Taylor's joining me. And one hour from now, the newest New Orleans Saints, Emmanuel Sanders, stops by our show. I got to say before I start anything. We're in a real challenge right now. We're going to get through this. It's not easy.
Starting point is 00:03:13 Post 9-11, it was a difficult time for not just months, but years. We're going to get through this. I saw something this morning. New Yorkers, 40,000 retired nurses, doctors and medical personnel, 40,000 in New York that are retired. signed up to go back to work. If that's not America, if that's not New York, I don't know what is. This is why we're going to get through this.
Starting point is 00:03:47 We may be divided all year on politics, blue, red, Republican Democrats. I have no idea of those 40,000 people who they voted for or which way they politically lean, ideologically left or right. but 40,000 New Yorkers who are retired, many of them probably in their 60s, 70s or older said, I want to be part of this. That's why I love New York. And Joy Taylor is joining me. That's why we're going to get through this.
Starting point is 00:04:16 We are divided often. But when we hit crisis, everybody, it is amazing to watch. There's 50 companies in America, 50 that produce alcohol that have now all decided we're going to produce, hand sanitizers. We've got car companies creating ventilators. This is what America does. We yell, snip, this is what we do all year. But when we get into crisis, people rally around each other, and it's just a heartwarming thing to see. Enjoy Taylor. How are you? I'm great. We'll fight with each other, but we'll fight for each other too when it comes down to it. Well, we're a big dysfunctional family, but we come together in terms of a crisis. Okay, I want to start with this. So,
Starting point is 00:05:02 I've gone back and forth on the NBA. I think it's really important for the NBA to get back. I wasn't very optimistic driving to work Sunday night. I don't know if it's going to happen. But I thought of something this morning, and I want to start with this, the Chinese Basketball Association, and we've kind of watched what's happening in China with the coronavirus.
Starting point is 00:05:24 They were going to restart the basketball operations, and then they put it on hold. And Brian Winhorse says, uh-oh, is that a bad sign for the NBA? It's been a really bad week in Asia in terms of restarting basketball. The Japanese League started and failed a restart last weekend. The Korean League was supposed to start this weekend coming up. They've shelved their entire season.
Starting point is 00:05:45 And now the Chinese League, which called all their foreign players back with the intention of restarting in mid-April, has pushed until May, which is a four-month hiatus. They have to create a bubble where players, referees, officials, trainers, coaches can feel comfortable at operating in, and they haven't been able to do it. and that's what the NBA is going to do, and I think it's going to prove very difficult.
Starting point is 00:06:05 But I want to say something why I think the NBA has got a real fighting chance here. The biggest brand in this league easily is the Lakers, and the biggest personal brand is LeBron, and it's not really close. Janus, Kauai, great players, they're not LeBron's brand, and they're both humming this year. LeBron's humming and the Lakers are humming. Both excellent. you really got to get this year in.
Starting point is 00:06:32 If the Yankees are really, really good, and they've got a bunch of stars, and you've got a crisis or a lockdown, you at least know the last images of that season will be somebody in Yankee Stadium potentially hoisting, you know, hoisting the banner, hoisting the trophy. That's a great last image. And I'll give you an example.
Starting point is 00:06:56 LeBron's first title in Miami. We never discredit that. Do you know that was a shortened season? We never talk about that. We never bring that up. Why? Because the last image, we loved Dwayne Wade. We were so happy for LeBron, Chris Bosch. We saw images we knew Pat Riley.
Starting point is 00:07:23 We never talk about that. We forget that it was a shortened season. we've never once held that against LeBron James and D. Wade. It's like movies. Usual suspect, good movie. But what makes usual suspects to be considered by many to be better than it was, it's got a great ending. It's got a great last 15 minutes. And it covers up, which is mostly, it's an okay movie. But if you ask people, you ever watch usual suspects, oh, my guy, it's like gone with the wind. It's like good fellas. It's like God, It's the best movie.
Starting point is 00:07:58 It's an average movie, slightly above average, with a great ending. This is why you got to get this season in. Because if the last image, there's a chance that it's going to be LeBron in a Laker uniform, third team winning a title, we're not going to 20 years on a 30-for-30 talk about the virus. We're going to talk about LeBron and the Lakers. The last image, the last 10 minutes of the movie are going to be so unbelievable. you are going to go, wow, LeBron, third team. Wasn't that the year?
Starting point is 00:08:31 Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. But, God, can you? That's better than Jordan. I mean, he's way bad. And all Phil shows for years on, you know, LeBron's better than Jordan. Not that damn virus. And there's another part of this.
Starting point is 00:08:45 Whenever there's a downturn, whenever there is a crisis for an American business. And the NBA, this is a crisis, right? Go back to things that are dependable. Go back to the basics. I'll give you an example. In the 90s, Apple was almost bankrupt. Remember, they got rid of Steve Jobs.
Starting point is 00:09:08 And the stories are Apple was about, there's documentaries on it, about three months from bankruptcy. Steve Jobs came back. And what did Steve Jobs do? remember what Steve Jobs did? I got his quotes this morning. He slashed 70% of Apple's products, the stuff that was new and niche and cool and you didn't really know it. Steve Jobs said, we wanted to get back to basics, focus on simplicity, the things we knew people needed and loved and were familiar with. They got rid of all the other stuff.
Starting point is 00:09:53 In the NBA, you know what the basics are? LeBron, the Lakers. In baseball, the Yankees, for a long time, Jeter. Those are the basics. When you come out of a crisis, you have to deliver for the public, things they trust, things they like, things they know, simplicity and basics. LeBron and Lakers with a chance to be the,
Starting point is 00:10:21 the last image of this season will take one of the strangest, saddest, most tragic years, Kobe's death, the virus. But if the lasting image is that, that's what we'll talk about 20 years from now. That's the power. That's the power of titles and LeBron and the Lakers and championships and our devotion to sports. Listen, Mark Cuban's a smart guy. And he has been very critical of a lot of businesses during this crisis. But listen to the days he's talking about.
Starting point is 00:10:53 The over under would be June 1st, and I'm taking the under, that hopefully by middle of May we're starting to get back to normal and the NBA is playing games. Maybe not with fans, but we're playing games because sports play such an important role. You know, people want something to cheer for. People want something to rally around. People want something to be excited about. And if the Mavs and the NBA in general can get out there and start playing games
Starting point is 00:11:16 in May so that they're on TV, I mean, sports is what we need. right now, and I think sports will, you know, I think we're coming together as community, particularly in North Texas, but I think we need it. And I think the NBA is ready to play that role. To give you an idea of the basics being LeBron and the Lakers, if you take out Christmas Day, which is always the highest rated NBA regular season day, if you take that out, the 11 highest rated NBA game so far this year, 11 for 11, LeBron and the Lakers. They got a chance to win this thing. it will cover up some of the awfulness and the obstacles and the bumps and the crisis.
Starting point is 00:12:02 Ten biggest grossing movies last year. Movie theaters, last few years, people aren't going. They were all sequels or franchises. What do people like? What are the basics? What do we know? What do we put our arms around? What do we trust?
Starting point is 00:12:17 What are we familiar with? I think Mark Cuban knows it. You've got to get back. Whatever it is, modify it. Test everybody, but you've got to do everything you can to have a season. Happy birthday to one of our bosses today. Witt album is, I don't know how old he is.
Starting point is 00:12:38 He looks 13. I think he looks 13 years old, so happy birthday for him. All right, so coming up next, Nick Wright this hour, Emmanuel Sanders next hour. coming up next, we have paid so much attention to the Patriots. Oh, oh, Tom's gone. And Tom Brady, why'd you leave? But the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and three or four NFL teams have told you so much
Starting point is 00:13:09 by the players, the quarterbacks they have acquired, traded for. That. Really interesting story from Bruce Ariens coming up. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports Radio, FS1 and the IHeart Radio app. Last night, a blown call changed a game. I'm talking, Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough.
Starting point is 00:14:50 Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on Earth? Are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust.
Starting point is 00:15:07 I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Kear Gaines, as we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast. Starting point is 00:15:23 This is Clever Taylor the 4th. And on my podcast, The Cliverts Show, I'm bringing you conversations about all kinds of stuff. Like being an internet famous referee. We're in the middle of a game. This linebacker, this linebacker walks up to me. He goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her.
Starting point is 00:15:40 What? Time out. Quarterback on office blue 42. Hey, ref, my mom, I want you. to weigh better. What? Hey, Miss Parker. Listen to the Clifford Show on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. Hey, I'm Jared Adano. You might know me as that loud guy who yells out, help on the internet.
Starting point is 00:16:07 Help! Somebody! Please! But there's so much more to me than me. I'm an actor. I'm a comedian. And recently, I've become quite the helper myself. And on my new podcast, Hope from a Hippocrite, I'll be changing lives. helping people in need with my sage advice and thoughtful solutions. Sike, I'm a comedian. I'm not qualified to give good advice. Join me and my comedian friends as we riff, rant, recommend some of the most legally dubious advice known to man.
Starting point is 00:16:36 If I'm calling you, even if you're on your phone, let it ring twice. One ring is too scary. Oh, cream a chicken suit. Hey, cream Cream a chicken suit. This is help from a hypocrite, the worst advice for the dumbest people you know.
Starting point is 00:16:53 Listen to Help from Hypocrite as part of the Mike Coulthura Podcast Network available on the IHart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome back. It is great to have you in. Nick Wright, 10 minutes, Joy Taylor, around the corner, Emmanuel Sanders, the New Orleans Saints. What a pickup by them. What a pickup. A veteran smart wide receiver walks in, catches 68 balls, seven touchdowns next to Michael
Starting point is 00:17:17 Thomas. Toy! I will not doubt the Saints this year. I did last year. Good to have you in. So we've paid so much attention to the Tom Brady side and the New England side of the Brady to the Buccaneers story. And most of it is because Tom Brady's the big brand and New England's been a dynasty. And Tampa Bay's always been talented in my lifetime, but sort of dysfunctional and bad at quarterback. And it's a quarterback league. And so we haven't paid a lot of attention to that. But Bruce Ariens was on the Dan Patrick show. And he was
Starting point is 00:17:51 talking about the two quarterbacks post Jamos he was most interested in. It was just take everybody that we think might even hit the market, grade their entire year's work, some even into last year. And let's get a list of who we think would improve us over James. And we really went through about eight guys and came up with two. Yeah, Teddy Bridgewater is the backup plan? Yes. It's a good plan to have there, Bruce.
Starting point is 00:18:19 Yeah, it was amazing to think that those quarterbacks would all hit the market this year, but we were more than ready to try to work in fix James. Now, think about that. Teddy was the smallest quarterback available. May have the weakest arm. Of all the foals, Cam, Jay. Teddy may have the weakest arm. Tom Brady is absolutely the least athletic.
Starting point is 00:18:43 That's interesting. Why would he pick those two? I mean, Teddy doesn't told the ball downfield. Brady is can't move at all that's interesting. Cam's bigger and stronger so is James. Nick Foles can really let it rip. Why? Oh, wait.
Starting point is 00:19:02 They're the opposite of James. What Tampa is telling you, we've got a lot of good players. If we just get a grown-up, gets through the playbook fast, doesn't turn it over, we don't need an athlete. We don't need a cannon. Tampa's telling you. Their coaches believe we got all sorts of players. We don't need a superstar at quarterback.
Starting point is 00:19:28 We need a guy that can distribute the ball to our scores. Kansas City, teams will tell you, coaches will tell you what drives them nuts. Bruce Ariens is telling you, James drove him nuts, maturity, some maintenance, too many turnover, bad judgment. Bridgewater's the weakest arm available. I like him, but weakest arm. Brady's the worst athlete available. That's the two they wanted. Kansas City, when they got rid of Alex Smith, did the opposite.
Starting point is 00:19:56 Kansas City had Alex Smith. He was safe and he was steady and he was accurate and he was a grown-up and he had very good judgment. And Andy Reed and Brett Veets were telling you, you know what? We're going to go younger, looser, more mistakes, bigger arm. We think our players right now, the same. speed we have, the players we have, we're underachieving. We're going to take a guy that we'll groom.
Starting point is 00:20:25 He's going to make more mistakes. He's not quite ready. He's sort of loose. He's a hit or miss guy. But they told you what was driving them crazy about Alex Smith. He wouldn't let a rip. He wouldn't let it go. The Chicago Bears are telling you what drives them crazy about Tribeschi by getting Nick Foles.
Starting point is 00:20:45 Nick Foles is a letter rip guy. average nine yards an attempt during the Super Bowl run. What they're telling you is Tribisky gets tight and won't let it rip. Foles is a pocket guy. They're telling you, Trebisky's a good athlete, but he's not very good in the pocket. Tribusky, Foles. Foles has actually been better in big games. They're telling you, we don't trust Trubisky in big games.
Starting point is 00:21:11 They're telling you, too many of the analysts out there, well, Cam's better than Foles. No, no, no, no, no. the bears are telling you what drives them crazy about Trabiski. They wish he was better in the pocket, was more of a letter-ripped guy, is a guy that throws it, can throw it way downfield. Got a big old arm. And by the way, this is why Bridgewater to Carolina. Remember, when Teddy goes to Carolina, I said he's the opposite of Cam.
Starting point is 00:21:43 Carolina is telling you what drove them crazy about Cam. Teddy is focused. Cam's distracted. Teddy is accurate. Cam is not. Teddy doesn't make any mistakes. He'll get you in and out of problems pre-snap. Cam's not as good at that.
Starting point is 00:22:01 So don't get caught up in who's the most talented guy available. Teams will tell you, the bears are telling you what drives him nuts about Trabisky. Andy Reid's telling you what frustrated him about Alex Smith. And Bruce Ariens is telling you, Listen, we got players. We're just beating ourselves. Bridgewater and Brady never beat themselves. Joy Taylor with the news.
Starting point is 00:22:25 No, no, no, no, turn on the news. This is the herd line news. All right, so yesterday we talked about the Drake lyrics that Deshaun Watson posted on Twitter, which seemed to kind of call out the Texans for trading D'Andre Hopkins. Yeah. Well, now some more of his social media activity is sparking some rumors that he could potentially join the Patriots in 2021. All right.
Starting point is 00:22:51 So Bleach reports, Tyler Conway replied to Watson's original Drake tweet with a picture of Bill Belichick on the phone. Yeah. And another Drake lyric, I'm just saying you could do better. Tell me, have you heard that lately? It doesn't sound as good as I read it. Drake does it? And Deshaun liked the post.
Starting point is 00:23:12 Mm, liking posts is big trouble. It, yes, liking posts can get you in big trouble. I agree. So this is kind of interesting because this is a little bit of a Saffan Diggs territory where it's like little subtle shots. Does it mean anything? Maybe, maybe not. But it's not nothing considering the circumstances.
Starting point is 00:23:33 Yeah, I mean, when you go on Twitter, you're telling people in that moment what you think. Now, it's always stupid when people go back and say, you said this nine years ago on Twitter. Well, there's new information. I'm a new person. That doesn't mean I think it today. it tells you in that moment Deshaun is like, yeah, I'm thinking about that. They need a quarterback and this place is driving me nuts. Well, I would say especially with someone Deshaun's age, like you know if you like a picture,
Starting point is 00:23:58 people can see that you like that picture. And sometimes liking a picture means nothing. But liking a tweet can be something different. Like we, the more you understand social media, you know the implications of retweeting something or liking something or responding to something and not saying anything. So it's subtle. It's a little passive aggressive. But listen, I don't blame Deshaun Watson.
Starting point is 00:24:20 And honestly, to sit here and dream of Deshaun Watson in a Patriots uniform, that's something special right there. It would be fun. It would be totally different than Tom Brady as a player. But, you know, Brady, Brady's not going to give you what Deshaun can, but the league's moving in a direction and Belichick sees it. Right. Hopefully he does.
Starting point is 00:24:40 Yeah. But also just I think we all kind of collected. at this point want to save Deshaun from Houston. And it's nothing against the Texas. The Texans are a fun team to watch. They were very enjoyable last year. But it just feels like Bill O'Brien is making these decisions that's putting Deshawn up against it.
Starting point is 00:24:58 So it's tough. Deshawn feels like the life preserver to a sinking ship. Yeah. So kind of some big news in L.A. yesterday, Clippers owner Steve Balmer, has agreed to buy the forum from MSG for $400 million in cash. Right. This move resolves the litigation concerns around the Clippers' pursuit of a new stadium in Englewood in the California, Inglewood area. And it clears the way for a privately funded state-of-the-art basketball arena, team headquarters complex, and community center to be built there.
Starting point is 00:25:29 You spent $4 million to buy it and you're just going to tear it down, right? No. So the forum's going to continue to operate as a live music venue. So they're not going to tear down the forum. Okay, that's good. And they're going to build a new one right next to it? Yes. And all current former or forum employees will be extended employment offers once the purchase is complete.
Starting point is 00:25:48 Cool. So they're going to basically keep everybody on that already works at the forum through the purchase from MSG. They're going to keep running the forum as a live music venue. And now they have the opportunity to build their own facility. So basically all of the Clippers facilities are going to be in the Englewood area, which is great. Like this is what they've been trying to sort out. There was a lot of back and forth boring paperwork stuff. litigation that was going on between them and MSG and James Dolan.
Starting point is 00:26:15 So that's all worked out. So we will be getting a Clippers arena in the next couple years. Cool. So with NFL offseason workouts likely to be canceled, Tom Brady is going to have to find new ways to connect with his Bucks teammates and learn the offense. But he doesn't think he'll have any trouble because technology. I'm going to do the best I can to be in conversation with guys and try to get together
Starting point is 00:26:35 and find ways to meet up in different places and get to work in that sense. So technology is an amazing thing, and we're going to use the technology as best we can to try to get to know each other. They're ahead of me on what they need to know in terms of the offense. So I really got to get up to speed with the things that they already know in their terminology. And it's just a lot of time and energy, but that's what I love to do. And playing quarterback for a long time. That's what I do is I watch film and I study and I try to learn. I try to grow.
Starting point is 00:27:08 I try to evolve every year. By the way, technology is amazing. You know when I really realized that how amazing technology was. I've always known it's great, right? We both know this. Right. I was in the bathroom last summer. My daughter was in Cape Town, South Africa.
Starting point is 00:27:23 She FaceTime me. So she FaceTime me. And it was crystal clear. And I'm like, you're on the other side of the world. I'm in a bathroom brushing my teeth. Yeah, it's unbelievable. How is the... And so the next day I call it.
Starting point is 00:27:38 because I want to see how long will this take to connect? About a second and a half. So Tom, use your technology. That FaceTime thing, I've said before, the TV is the greatest invention of my life. If you have kids, FaceTime is second. I mean, it's second. FaceTime is amazing.
Starting point is 00:27:51 It's honestly, with everything that's going on, it's really been wonderful and all the apps that are out there that allow. I mean, we're on Skype right now. That's how we're doing the show. And, you know, people are FaceTimeing each other, doing Google hangs or Zoom meetings. Like, it's really allowed everybody.
Starting point is 00:28:08 to stay connected throughout everything that's going on. But I do think that of all the new quarterbacks or movement that's been going on, I'm going to put my faith in Brady above all else, not just because, you know, it's Tom Brady. But we saw in Tom versus Time, this dude is obsessed with watching film and studying. So this is just extra time for him to dig in on all that.
Starting point is 00:28:31 And the technology does just make it easier. Good stuff, Joy with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Hurdline News. I've led my show with the Lakers and LeBron and I said, people forget that his championship, his first championship in Miami was a shortened season. And we do not hold that against the NBA.
Starting point is 00:28:50 We do not hold that against LeBron. Because when the last scene of a movie is great like usual suspects, it leaves us believing the movie was great, even though usual suspects is just a so-so movie with a great ending. And that season, that LeBron D-Waid-Bosch season, was not a great. season. It was a great ending. It was a shortened season. So I look at LeBron and the Lakers potentially winning this year. And if that's the final image, you have got a fight to get this year in, even if you start July 15th. With that, I go to my buddy, first thing's first host. Nick Wright brought to us by Mercedes-Benz, the best or nothing. All right, I really do believe,
Starting point is 00:29:32 and I think Mark Cuban is starting to be more public on this. Nick, I don't think you can throw this season away. If it ends with a LeBron championship against the Celtics or a Yonis, that is so important and that'll be an enormously positive final image. You agree or disagree with that? Oh, I agree. I think they're going to play it. Now, will there be fans there?
Starting point is 00:30:01 I don't know. Is it going to be less than an 82 game regular season, almost assuredly? Like right now, what I think is the best case scenario, the best realistic case scenario for the NBA is you get in, you have six regular season games left. You play those over two weeks and then you have a breakneck playoff, which if we are going to tease this forward and assume this year is going to be played, turns out a team like the Lakers that hasn't been resting, that has actually treated the regular season like it matters. It could play very well into their hands as opposed to a team like your beloved Clippers, who I heard you chipped in $5 million to help them buy the forum, bully for you, Colin. That team that has been saying all year long, no, no, no, no, no, it's a marathon,
Starting point is 00:30:54 not a sprint. Well, all of a sudden it might be a sprint. And if Clippers, Lakers, conference finals, everyone's been saying we're going to get, if we do get the playoffs, I don't know if the Clippers will be there. in the conference finals because I don't know if the clippers know what their rotation is yet know how to play together yet I think that really matters yeah and by the way it should be noted the MVP hopefully goes to lebron he took the season seriously the lakers took the regular season seriously we so often say the regular season doesn't matter but to your point Milwaukee and the lakers
Starting point is 00:31:27 the celtics uh you know Denver teams that have taken the regular season seriously are going to be in home court situations going on Yes. How about Toronto? Yes. I know we don't, the defending champ, they won 59 games the year before Kauai got there. They won 58 with Kauai. They're about to win.
Starting point is 00:31:47 Well, they were on base to win around 59 again. Again, Nick Nurse, Missai Ujuri. That team, we talk, I think Milwaukee is going to the finals. But if it's not Milwaukee, I think Toronto's got as good of a shot as anybody. Yeah, regular season in the NBA, don't listen to anybody. There is still value to it. Now, I talked about this about 10 minutes ago. You may or may not have heard it.
Starting point is 00:32:08 I said, when teams go after a quarterback, it tells you what drove them nuts about the previous one. And I used Andy Reed and Alex Smith. Publicly, we love him. But they went from a safe, steady, accurate guy to a young, inexperienced, loose, makes mistakes guy and Patrick Mahomes. It was telling you, Andy Reid was like, we love him, but he won't let it rip. and Mahomes is the ultimate let it rip guy. And I think Bridgewater and Brady,
Starting point is 00:32:40 Bruce Ariens is telling you, we're good. We just keep beating ourselves. These guys never beat themselves, even though they're limited, arm and physically. So now we have Cam. Is the NFL telling you?
Starting point is 00:32:54 Because Cam can't get an offer. They're telling you, listen, what's really important in this league is focus. Cam can sometimes be to see. and accuracy. Cam's a lot of things. That's not it.
Starting point is 00:33:08 It's not against Cam. It's that what he's represented is a turnoff in the new NFL. Well, I think it's a good theory. The problem is there aren't 32 guys that represent those things. You were talking about teams trying to get something different. It's exactly what your friend, Chris Ballard and the Indianapolis Colts did. Like Jacoby, you're steady. You don't throw turnovers.
Starting point is 00:33:34 We appreciate you. But we're going to go with the guy who's 38 years old who just had 20 picks because flatly, he has more arm talent. And that Philip Rivers signing is the reason I'm so beside myself that no one traded for can. So if Philip Rivers at age 38 after 20 interceptions with the worst body language in the NFL since Jay Cutler was done moping around, he instantly gets 25 million bucks and nobody wants to trade a mid-round pick for Cam Newton. And this nonsense, oh, well, you can't trade a pick for him because then if he's not healthy, you've wasted the pick. Do you know how many mid-round quarterbacks get drafted and their wasted picks?
Starting point is 00:34:19 Have you met Mason? Luke Bolt would like to say hello. Cardale Jones just got bench in a different league. These teams won't give a fourth or fifth round pick to lock in the certainty of Cam Newton at 20 million bucks, a totally reasonable deal. And instead, Joe Flacco, after being terrible for five years, John Elie's like, KSTM didn't work out, but let me give Flacco's 66 million. I don't understand what's happening. It's to this point, Colin, I really do believe that his press conference wardrobe is working against him. I think people are still holding the Super Bowl post-game press conference five years ago against him.
Starting point is 00:35:04 I think it's non-football stuff because the football reason is Cam Perfect? No. But the idea that the Dolphins of the Chargers didn't trade the 147 pick of the draft for them is just insane to me. Yeah. You know, we can, you know, you are not as enamored with Brady going forward as I am. No, I'm not. You're not. No one is other than Giselle. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:35:32 But I think you and I do agree. I find it fascinating that I am submitting this as a theory, and I'm getting a ton of pushback, which is the Patriots released maybe the third or second best kicker of all time. They let go of their two playmaking linebackers. They didn't go after any of the quarterbacks like Bridgewater who are significantly better than what they have. And let's see. They've got 12 picks.
Starting point is 00:36:00 They'll get three more supplemental last year, next year for Collins, Van Nuoy, and Brady. My theory is they're going to move about four of their picks this year to next year's draft with their picks and their supplemental. They're going to have about 12 to 14 picks, and they'll use eight of them to move somewhere on the top two or three. People think, oh, they're tanking. They're not tanking.
Starting point is 00:36:25 They're going to be Miami. They're going to maintain their culture. play their butt off, but be outscored mostly by better AFC offenses. That's my theory. I get a lot of pushback. It seems so obvious. Either Belichick doesn't know what he's doing or he's got a plan. I'm going to go with it to the latter.
Starting point is 00:36:42 What say you on my theory that they know they've got equity? They're going to get all these picks and next year go big for a young quarterback. So I love the theory. And by the way, as we are now entering this sports topic desert, I want to thank you as someone that produces five hours of content a day for you postulating this theory because it's given me about a week's worth of radio shows. I just argue with an invisible Colin Coward because I don't think this theory holds any water as much as I adore it. And here's why, and I think it's going to be something that I'm going to try to relate it somewhere that something you can relate to. when you made the big lease from your former employer at FS1,
Starting point is 00:37:28 if they had come to you and said, listen, Colin, we all know we're not going to be dominant in year one. And in fact, what is best for us is if we just kind of tank this first year because it's not our championship year anyway, and here's a plan and here's why,
Starting point is 00:37:48 it might all make sense. And then the devil on your shoulder might, say, okay, I get what you're saying, but believe that I'm not letting people have those headlines. I'm not letting people say I made a mistake. This was a failure because I'll be proven right in five years. I want to be proven right right now and in five years. I do not think a 67-year-old Bill Belichick is signing up for a year's worth of discussion. It was always Brady. Belichick was along for the ride. Look, he was holding for the ride. Look, he was holding. holding him back. I think instead what he's trying to sign up for is last year, 12 games,
Starting point is 00:38:28 my defense held the opponent to 17 points or less. Why can't we do that again? Those are the only 12 games we won. The five games my defense didn't play great. We lost all five because we had average quarterback play last year. We can have average quarterback play again this year. So I actually think it's going in the other direction. I do think they're stripping it down to a degree, but I think Belichick still thinks they're winning that division and thinks winning 11 games without Tom Brady is going to be more impressive than the 12 they won with him for his own personal legacy. So, again, please keep this theory up because now I also have two hours for the night on radio, but I don't agree with it. I love you. I saw you yesterday.
Starting point is 00:39:13 It made me happy. I'm getting more Nick Wright. I've been listening to you every day, buddy. continued success. We're going to get through this whole thing. You're in New York City. And I know there's some tension there in the city, but we're going to get through it. That city's got great people and great leadership. And thanks for coming on. We'll be fine. And you mentioned Mark Cuban. In 2028, there was a Cuban cowherd ticket I'd vote for. Talk to you later, my friend. Thanks. I'd have the nutty theories. And Mark would obviously be the

And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross.

Starting point is 00:42:07 This is Clever Taylor the Fourth. And on my podcast, The Cliverts Show, I'm bringing you conversations about all kinds of stuff. Like being an internet famous. Miss referee. We're in the middle of a game. This linebacker walks up to me, he goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her.
Starting point is 00:42:23 What? Time out. Quarterback on office blue of 42. Hey, rep, my mama want you to wave at her. What? Hey, Miss Parker. Listen to the Clippers show on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast.
Starting point is 00:42:45 Hey, I'm Jared Adano. You might know me as that loud guy. who yells out, help on the internet. Help! Somebody! Please! But there's so much more to me than that. I'm an actor. I'm a comedian, and recently, I've become quite the helper myself. And on my new podcast, Hope from a Hippocrite, I'll be changing lives, helping people in need with my sage advice and thoughtful solutions. Sike! I'm a comedian! I'm not qualified to give good advice.

Starting point is 00:43:45 Great to have you in. Absolute pleasure. Top of next hour, Emmanuel Sanders, former 49er and Bronco. Really really good player. Really, really good player. Smart dude will walk in. Saints. Saints could be, I think they're probably this morning along with Seattle. No, St. Seattle, my NFC Super Bowl favorites.
Starting point is 00:44:04 I think Emmanuel Sanders, one last hurrah. Good to have you in. So I saw this story. My dad was an optometrist. I used to go on Saturdays with my dad to his optometrist office. I've seen a lot of eyes in my life. But apparently my eyes are not as good as this anonymous NFL scout. He said, Joe Burrow, LSU quarterback.
Starting point is 00:44:28 The interesting thing about him, when you look at his face, he reminds me of Peyton. You look into his eyes. You look deep into his eyes and you see the determination. Oh, really? That's funny because I see pupils. Apparently now a scout says you look at Joe Burrough's eyes and you see Peyton Manning. Oki-dokey. Yesterday, Joel Klapp looked at Joe Montana's feet and said he's Joe Burrow.
Starting point is 00:44:56 Joe Burrow reminds me of Joe Montana. When Joe Montana played the game, he played with a smoothness in his feet and a surgical approach mentally attacking the defense that at that point was beyond reproach. He had no peer at that point in the way that he played. Burrow is similar to that. He's so smooth. The basketball background. The absolute competitive nature that you see when he gets hit and bounces back,
Starting point is 00:45:21 the surgical nature in which he sees the weaknesses and the structures of the defense. And then he goes out and attacks him. I love Joe Burrow, man. Yeah, yeah. The eyes, his eyes. I look at his eyes and I see Brady. I look at his eyes and I see Peyton Manning and Joe Montana. And there was this gem on the NFL network.
Starting point is 00:45:41 Listen to this one. The comparisons right now are you and Tom Brady. Die! Your response to that. Please don't, please don't compare me to the best player of all time. All right. Let me do my own thing. Don't do that to me, please.
Starting point is 00:45:54 It's high praise, though. It is, it is, but it's Tom Brady. Okay. Brady, Peyton Manning, and Joe Montana. Those are the comps. Because I look into his eyes and I see imagery. Oh, he's Peyton Manning. It could be Cooper Manning.
Starting point is 00:46:17 can't tell the difference. You've got to be kidding me. You guys are now all automatrists. All right. Junior year at LSU. Peyton Manning, my bad, Joe Burrell. 16 touchdowns, 13 games. He threw two against Rice, two against Southeast Louisiana, and four against UFC. Bama didn't have one. Georgia didn't have one. Florida didn't have one. Eight touchdown passes against the SEC with all those same players. By the way, Peyton Manning. came into the league inherited a Hall of Fame GM, Bill Pullian, by his second coach. Tony Dungey had a Hall of Fame coach. Montana inherited Bill Walsh. Maybe you've heard of it. Brady inherited Bill Belichick, Robert Kraft. Joe Burrow is inheriting the cheapest owner.
Starting point is 00:47:13 They don't have a GM and Zach Taylor. Could be good, no idea. You don't think that's going to matter? I like Joe Burrow. He's a B-plus prospect. He's a really good kid. He is a franchise quarterback. It's like I always said about Baker. He's a franchise quarterback. He's not number one.
Starting point is 00:47:29 He's not a guy I would draft, but he's a franchise quarterback. Burroughs a way better prospect than Baker Mayfield. But he's not Elway. He's not Trevor Lawrence next year. He's not Andrew Luck. He can't overcome that. And the other thing is, never forget this, when Peyton Manning came in the league with a Hall of Fame GM,
Starting point is 00:47:49 and a soon-to-be Hall of Fame coach, Tony Dungey. He came into the AFC East South. I think it was the AFC South now at the end, but it was AFC East, I think. It was mostly dysfunctional. Brady inherited the AFC East, as Joy knows, that's completely dysfunctional. Joe Montana in the 80s had the New Orleans Ains. That's what they were called, the goofy Atlanta Falcons, and the hit and miss Rams. Joe Burrow is inheriting, in my opinion, the best roster in the NFL now in post-free agency in Baltimore.
Starting point is 00:48:24 Loaded. Pittsburgh gets big Ben back, and I think outside of San Francisco, they have the best young defensive front, young defensive front in the NFL, Pittsburgh. And I may trash Cleveland. But once they draft a tackle and a linebacker, they'll have a top six roster in the league. I'm dead serious. I may bang on them all the time. Once they get left tackle solved and once they get another linebacker, Cleveland is stacked. I don't know if Stavansky and coach, but their roster's great.
Starting point is 00:48:55 Receivers, backs, tight ends, pass rushers, corners. Cleveland's stacked. They need a linebacker or a left tackle, probably somebody else in the back end. That division is the opposite. You've got Pittsburgh's never terrible. Tomlin's never had a sub-500 season. Baltimore is rarely bad. So you're talking about Joe Burroughs going to inherit a below-average owner,
Starting point is 00:49:24 a sub-optimal head coach in a brutally good division with two of the best ownership groups in the NFL, Baltimore and the Rooney family. Is anybody considering, again, we know this to be true. Where you land matters. this Joe Burrough stuff people look at his eyes and they see Peyton Manning you know what I'm going to look into his eyes in October
Starting point is 00:49:51 and you know what I'm going to see with Joe Burrell fear get me the hell out of here he's going to be facing the Ravens and the Steelers and the Browns pass rushes which will be three of the top five in the league you're not going to see Peyton Manning and if you're looking at his eyes and see Peyton Manning he'll be Peyton Manning running for his life
Starting point is 00:50:10 from the Ravens Pass rush. Yo, my lord. Hour to Emmanuel Sanders next. I'm exhausted. One more herd. Starting point is 00:54:09 This is The Herd. wherever you may be and however you may be listening. We're on all of our platforms. We're on FS1, IHeart Radio, Fox Sports Radio, and Sirius XM Channel 83, five minutes, Emmanuel Sanders, former 49er and Bronco, now with the Saints. What an addition that is.
Starting point is 00:54:28 We'll be joining us. Joy Taylor is joining me. You can't see her. You can hear her on radio. She's in her beautiful home or condo. I don't get nosy. Joy, how are you? I'm in my pillow palace.
Starting point is 00:54:40 You love you and my wife. You got, we have so many pillows. I can see Joy's got like, Joy has a couch. I have nine pillows in the couch. All beautiful on your couch. So essentially, so my wife will put nine pillows on the bed. And I'm like, it's not art. So I always joke.
Starting point is 00:54:58 I'm like, I'm not going to sleep in the bed. I'm just going to sleep on the pillows on top of the bed. And she doesn't like my sarcasm. But you and my wife love pillows. I have seven pillows on my bed, nine pillows on my couch. And I actually thought about getting pillows from my dining room chairs, but I felt like that was too much. Yeah, maybe.
Starting point is 00:55:12 John Goulet, have you ever bought in your entire life a pillow one time? I don't think I've ever bought a pillow. I've certainly never bought a pillow for a couch. Yeah. How do you get a pillow for your bed? They're just there. I don't know. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:55:24 It's like magic. By the way, I want to talk about the NBA quickly. Everybody's kind of freaking out. Is the NBA season going to happen? I believe it's going to happen. I've gone back and forth on this, but it's an 82 game schedule, and they're already 65 games played. I say you scrap the regular season, you've already played 65 games, you go to the playoffs. Two reasons.
Starting point is 00:55:47 Colin, what about seating? Who gives a rip? First 20 games may not have fans. Who cares about seating? You can play all these games in Dallas or Houston or L.A. It's not going to matter. There's going to be no fans there. The seating argument is stupid.
Starting point is 00:56:01 Secondly is, what truth in the NBA have we not discovered through 65 games? Miami's better than we thought. They'll get in. Philadelphia has been disappointing. They'll get in. Let's go to the West. The top four teams are Lakers, Clippers, Nuggets, Jazz. Myself included, Joy, included.
Starting point is 00:56:23 Everybody had them top four. Houston, been disappointing. They'll still get in. Oklahoma have been surprising. They get in. Dallas, great offense, no defense. They'll get in. And Memphis with John Morant, remarkable story.
Starting point is 00:56:36 Are you really going to throw a tizzy? that the Portland Trailblazers, who are not a championship team, offensive back court, neither plays D, they're not getting in. Really? Can I throw a tantrum over that? Let's go to the east. The Bucks and the Celtics and the Raptors are really good. It's been established.
Starting point is 00:56:57 Again, Miami, surprisingly good. They're in. Philadelphia, disappointing they're in. The cutoff team, you're going to complain the wizards don't get in. They're 750 to 1 to win a championship. Really? You are literally, this is outrageous. The Wizards, they're not even good with John Wall and they don't have him. That team, so you're going to argue because the Blazers, who I root for because I live there,
Starting point is 00:57:23 and the Wizards don't get in. It's been established. Seating doesn't matter because many of these playoff games, the first round anyway, will not, and the finals, they'll play somewhere, but first round's going to have no fans. If they go May, June, July, or whatever. And the second thing is, tell me the truth that hasn't been realized. They all get in. Oklahoma City, Miami, better than we thought, both get in. Houston, Philly, disappointing.
Starting point is 00:57:48 Still get in. We know what the league is. It's going to come down to the Bucks, the Celtics, the Raptors, the Lakers, the Clippers, Denver, and the Jazz. Pretty much what we thought. I mean, Philadelphia has been disappointing. But they'll still get it and have a chance. Mark Cuban sounds like to me,
Starting point is 00:58:06 he wants an NBA season. The over under would be June 1st, and I'm taking the under, that hopefully by middle of May, we're starting to get back to normal, and the NBA is playing games. Maybe not with fans, but we're playing games because sports play such an important role.
Starting point is 00:58:23 You know, people want something to cheer for. People want something to rally around. People want something to be excited about. And if the Mavs and the NBA in general can get out there and start playing games in May so that they're on TV, I mean, sports is what we need right now, and I think sports will, you know, I think we're coming together as community, particularly in North Texas, but I think we need it. And I think the NBA is ready to play that role. Emmanuel Sanders has been a total pro. He got drafted in the third round, which has always been remarkable about the NFL draft.
Starting point is 00:58:55 Half the players are undrafted. Many of the stars are not top 10 picks. He starts with the Steelers, great career. Goes to the Broncos productive. Goes to the Niners, just the energy they needed on the perimeter, and now he's going to be a New Orleans saint, which I think makes them probably the favorite or co-favorant in the NFC, and Emmanuel Sanders is joining us. First of all, congratulations. Boy, if you have to land somewhere, Drew Brees and Sean Payton
Starting point is 00:59:26 are not a bad place to land. You're pretty excited? Yeah, I'm really excited. You know, to play in the dome, and to play with Drew Breeze and Sean Payton's offense, you know, obviously Michael Thomas, with Alma and Kamara in the back field, like, who wouldn't be excited, you know, and so I know that it's exciting sounds. I know on paper we look really good, but, you know, right now I'm getting ready to go
Starting point is 00:59:49 outside and run because I know, you know, I know, you know, we got to put the work in in order to attain what we want to attain, and I'm all in for them. You know, it's funny. I have some connections to the 49ers, and I was talking to a person within the organization when you got there. And they said, you know, he's such a veteran that he figured the playbook out quickly. And for those who forget, you walked into the Niners, I think it was game one. You were productive.
Starting point is 01:00:15 Why, some guys can do it and some guys can't, Emmanuel. Why are you able to walk into a complicated offense and figure it out so quickly? What is it about, I've heard this about Teddy Bridgewater. I've heard this about Randy Moss. Some guys, it's innate. Why could you, why did you adapt? so quickly to the Niners complex offense?
Starting point is 01:00:37 Yeah, I think pressure is done that you put on yourself. And how do you get rid of pressure is by preparing, you know, when I first got to the Niners, right when I touched down, 30 minutes later, West Wilkers in my room were going over to playbook. And, you know, I ended up studying like three hours that night and got to work at like five in the morning
Starting point is 01:00:59 next day, and that was my first practice. And from day one, I jumped in as a starter and was trying to get every single rap. Another thing that really helped me out as well as San Fran is the quarterback's coach who was with San Francisco a year prior to me getting there. He was the officer coordinator with the Broncos as well. So a lot of the plays were kind of insane. I just had to figure out the terminology and how to line up in different ways that they called certain things. And so it was a way smoother transition for me than it would have been for other. guys and trying to get a mid-season trade and pick up an entire playbook.
Starting point is 01:01:35 Let's go back. Fourth quarter, minute 39 left. You beat your man badly down the field. Jimmy Garoppolo lets it go. What are you thinking? And about what point do you realize, damn, it's going to be long. Give me your thoughts in that moment and the play. Yeah, I mean, I remember Kyle called post route, me and Jimmy connected with it at practice.
Starting point is 01:02:01 And I was thinking, just here we go. Games on the line, men the left, just Super Bowl games on the line. I said, here's my moment right here. I remember getting up on the quarterback's toes and beating them. I didn't even know it was a double team, but I saw the safety running, so I thought it was just quarters, but I come to find out it was the double team. It ended up beating the guys, and I see the ball in the air,
Starting point is 01:02:22 and I'm like, go get it, go get it. And then probably about three or four steps after I saw the ball in the air, I realized it probably was a little too far, you know. So I just remember just trying to dig out and, like, really couldn't get to it. And the guy ended up tripping me, falling to the ground and clapping my hands. I knew that was a legendary moment. I didn't notice the game was going to be over and be determined on that play because we still, you know, we still had another opportunity.
Starting point is 01:02:50 But, you know, but, yeah, it went right through our hands, the entire, you know, the entire, you know, game right there was on the line. And so we didn't end up connecting, but it is what it is. You know, it just wasn't our time. And so credit to the Kansas City Chief, you know, they're a Super Bowl champion of this year. But, you know, I'm looking forward to the New Orleans and trying to make it up. By the way, Garoppolo gets a lot of heat.
Starting point is 01:03:15 I defend him. I don't think he's Aaron Rogers or Russell Wilson or Mahomes, but I think he's a really good player. What does he do well that you like and what does he need to work on in your opinion? Yeah, I think the difference between Jimmy and the rest of those quarterback. actually is if you're going to look at tape, he doesn't have as much film as those other guys. But if you do look at the film and if you do look at the games,
Starting point is 01:03:39 he's won games, you know? And so, you know, before he got to San Francisco, I don't know their record, but I know once you got there, I think they won like six in a row. So you could say, you know, whatever, well, people could say whatever they want to say about the guy, but he's a winner. And you go and check out his win percentage.
Starting point is 01:03:57 His win percentage is high. And that's no mistake. That has a lot to do with him and his leadership and his work ethic. Jimmy can go out and he'll throw two or three interceptions, but if you look at him, you'll never know because he just keeps coming at you. He keeps coming at you. You take a guy like that who really hadn't had that much ill-fair experience in terms of playing in games, and you give him a couple years to keep working on their game and loving the game, how he loves it.
Starting point is 01:04:23 I mean, I feel like a lot of people might take back the words they're saying about it because as it right now, he's a proven winner. And his first year as a start, this guy, really, as his first year, as it started, a full season. Yeah. He took this guy all the way to the Super Bowl. It was very close and being, you know, a Super Bowl champion. So you can't discredit him for all that. Emmanuel Sanders, 11th season in the NFL, Steelers, Broncos, Niners, a Super Bowl chant with Denver, a two-time pro bowler,
Starting point is 01:04:53 and a pros pro walks in, productive gets it. So the Packers were interested in you. and the Cowboys were reportedly interested in you and the Saints were the guys that land you. Take me through the process. You're talking perhaps to your agent. Did you think there was a moment you'd be a Packer or a cowboy? No, Green Bay sent over an offer.
Starting point is 01:05:17 It wasn't exactly what I had intended for it to be. And so we were communicating with them back and forth, but I don't know. I just go by my heart and I just didn't see Green Bay. And I love the whole Green Bay Packers organization and its history and everything. I just didn't see me, you know, in Green Bay. You know, one thing that was important to me was really I wanted to go to an environment where I was happy. Happiness is everything.
Starting point is 01:05:46 You know, once New Orleans called and I'm from Houston six hours away and to be in the dome and be with Drew Brees and being New Orleans back down south, you know, and six hours away from my. family. Everything just worked out that way and it was a perfect situation for me and that's what I was kind of waiting on. And so, you know, I see it as a blessing because, you know, free agency is not easy. You know, you think it's easy with where a lot of teams, you know, they say, you know, prior to the agency, oh, yeah, they want you bad, but then, you know, once you get into negotiations with these teams, they really try to dumb down everything. And a lot of teams try to bring on my age and instead of talking about our production and a lot of teams try to bring them
Starting point is 01:06:29 hide and I'm like, all right, all right. Obviously, you guys are trying to get me for the low, but you really insulting me because you want to talk about my age. Let's not talk about age. Let's talk about production. You want to talk about injury history. Let's not talk about injury history because I'm probably one of the only guys who started the season in the Hall of Fame game and went all the way to the Super Bowl
Starting point is 01:06:52 and got traded midseason and played 17 games. So I played the longest season that somebody could possibly be, and I stay healthy during all that. But, but again, you know, through the whole free agency process, you know, I was blessed to end up where, you know, where I really wanted to be with a good team, championship caliber team at the right finances. So it ended up working out. Yeah, don't let anybody, all you point to is production. Hey, baby, I don't, I got gray hair, by the way. Then they want to tell, when they want to tell me about how. old I am, I say, I don't know, Joy and I get good ratings. That's all I care about.
Starting point is 01:07:29 It's all about production. By the way, you're a third round pick. And it's really interesting in this league. Like in the NBA, after about the 10th pick, you kind of know you run out of players. There's been the occasional 13th, 15th pick. The NFL is totally different. Half the league's undrafted. There are Hall of Famers all over this league that came in the third and the fourth round. I believe where you land in this league is very important. Tom Brady, landed with Belichick. Joe Montana landed with Bill Walsh. Peyton Manning landed with a Hall of Fame,
Starting point is 01:08:02 general manager, and then got Tony Dungey. So you land with the Steelers. So if you go in the first round, maybe it's a lousy team at the top. How much do you think the Steelers initially going to a really good organization help craft your career and benefit you? I think it helps craft a lot.
Starting point is 01:08:21 You know, I came straight into a great organization. A team who was like two years removed from the Super Bowl and a team in my first year that went to the Super Bowl. And if I was a high traffic, it probably would have never happen. And so, God bless to have, you know, a Hall of Fame quarterback in Ben Rossisberger, who, you know, who was hard, you know, to deal with, maybe, you know, hard on us.
Starting point is 01:08:45 But, you know, I feel like we learned a lot, you know, from him and how to go about the NFL business and, you know, how to work and how to work hard and how to stay focused and how to stay locked in. And I think that that really helped. And I think just my career alone, if you look at my career, you know, I read the stats saying, you know, if we go to a Super Bowl this year with New Orleans,
Starting point is 01:09:05 I'll be the fourth player to the first player in the NFL history to play on, play in four Super Bowl, the four different teams. And I thought that was amazing. And when I looked back on it, it's because, you know, me going in a third round and a type of player, I've never really cashed out, like, huge, huge amounts of dollars.
Starting point is 01:09:25 but if you look at it, I've always been one of those mid-tiered guys who with fair money where I can go to great teams, and these great teams are going to Super Bowls. And so that's why I was able to go to Denver because, you know, I signed a mid-range deal and another mid-range deal. And then I went to San Fran, which it was not too much money. Now I'm in New Orleans because I'm at $8, you know, $9 to $10 million, which is a fair deal, and now I'm on a great team. So I take all of that and count.
Starting point is 01:09:52 And, you know, a lot of people, you know, they've not. might see it another way, but I see it as a blessing because, you know, if you can get paid and and you can win and you can go to Super Bowls, I think that that's a win-win, all in all. So, you know, I'm extremely blessed that, you know, I've been granted all these opportunities. Well, you know what? I just love talking to you. You and your cousin started a company called Fan Gage, which is actually in this social distancing world we now live in, at least temporarily.
Starting point is 01:10:19 People can connect with you through your company, explain it to our audience. Yeah, so me and my cousin, which is like a brother to me, we grew up together. Literally, he was born a month apart. Literally, we grew up playing sports together. He was really like my brother. I moved in with him for like a year. His dad, which my uncle is pretty much my dad. We started this way, this app or this company called Fan Gage because I love being in touch
Starting point is 01:10:54 with the fans. Like I love dialogue with the fans. You know, I've been the type to pick up a FaceTime call with fans on Twitter and always try to interact with him. So we're trying to figure out a way to get autographed pictures of fans who can travel to meet their favorite celebrity, who might be in a different country who loves NFL football or loves their favorite celebrity, but they can't connect with their favorite celebrities somehow.
Starting point is 01:11:22 So we created this app in which you can upload a picture to it. And say, for instance, your favorite celebrity is having a signing that day, they can literally sign your picture. And once they sign your picture and press in, that picture goes straight to your phone. And you get it from your favorite celebrity. And we even went in the details of having a video recording the entire time when your celebrity is doing a signing that he actually signed it.
Starting point is 01:11:48 So you can actually see the video of your favorite celebrity, whoever you want, signing your picture as well. And we just thought it was cool to be able to do that for the fans and for the celebrity as well, someone who probably doesn't even like to do signings in public or something like that, where they can sit at home and sign autographs and communicate with their friends and make somebody's day. And so it's been going well for us.
Starting point is 01:12:14 And I just think right now, you know, with the entire, how the nation is right now with the virus going around, I think, you know, in order for some, fan engagement. If you're a celebrity or whoever, or if a fan wants to reach out, I just think it's the perfect time for it. And so we're really pushing this thing for the fans and for the celebrities because we know times are harder.
Starting point is 01:12:36 But if we can keep the energy positive around America, I think that that will help the situation out a lot more as well. What a good, good guy. Fan Gage is the company. It's Emmanuel Sanders. You didn't have to come on. You got stuff to do in your life, but I think you're really delivered for our audience. we are huge fans.
Starting point is 01:12:54 You over-delivered. You were better than I thought, and I had great hopes coming in. Good dude, productive as hell, and you're going to win a lot of games down in New Orleans. Take care of yourself, and good luck going forward. All right. Take care of yourself as well, man. Thank you.
Starting point is 01:13:07 You bet Emmanuel Sanders. I talked to somebody in San Francisco last year, and they were just like, God, this guy is the best. Walked in, figured it out, first to practice. First, it was first or second game. It was like productive. That's what the NFL's like. looking for. Cam Newton's talented, but people question, as he distracted, be focused, be a pro,
Starting point is 01:13:28 get in early, work hard, and you end up making two years 16 million as a veteran NFL player. And by the way, it's interesting who wanted him. The Packers winning culture. The Saints, winning culture. It's like winners want to recruit winners. It's a culture. They want the right kind of dudes there. All right, good stuff. Coming up next, NFL. We're like, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, hold on. Maybe we shouldn't do the draft why they're so wrong next. Starting point is 01:17:39 By the way, I hear the American media. We're not testing enough people. For the record, South Korea has tested 1% of their people. Europe's tested 1% of their people. No country is going to test half of their people immediately. This is brand new. It's overwhelming. No country is ready for a pandemic
Starting point is 01:17:59 despite the preparations. We are getting ventilators to the people and states that need them. American media, you can occasionally find a glimmer of hope. There's plenty of it with the virus. We'll get through it. Good to have you in today.
Starting point is 01:18:15 NFL GMs. hold back on the draft. I think it's a big mistake. I'll get to that in a few seconds. But here's Joy Taylor with the news. No, no, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the Heard Line News. Sponsored by Mercedes-Benz, the best
Starting point is 01:18:31 or nothing. So many have lost in the faith in the Patriots keeping up the same level of dominance now that Tom Brady has left, but Devin McCordy is still confident in his team in an article for the Players Tribune. McCordy wrote, people are going to say that because Tom's
Starting point is 01:18:46 gone. The dynasty is over. They're already burying us far as I can tell. And that's fine. Let them. We never listen to the noise. And we're not about to start now. But the task is definitely taller this coming year than it has been in years past. There's more work to do. And it's not going to be easy this time around. Yeah. Well, there. Yeah. The whole Tom Brady's leaving things will be different. Cannot be overstated enough. Yeah. I mean, he is the culture there. Like, I understand that Bill Belichick has established the overall system and culture and do your job and the Patriots way. But my question about how that culture continues is does it really continue if the leader is not there? Because while the culture may be established, you know, the Spurs, they still have the Spurs way.
Starting point is 01:19:37 Yes. But are they winning championships? No, they're out. Yeah. If Belichick won a bunch of games like Popovich, we're not saying that Belich. We're not saying that Belichick, I think Belichick's going to become Popovich. Win, respected, but dominant titles? No, it's over.
Starting point is 01:19:53 You still need a star. Yes. You just need the star to be that kind of guys. And that's kind of changing. The world is a different place now. Kids are coming up differently. There's different distractions. It's going to be more difficult than I think Patriots fans think to find the next guy
Starting point is 01:20:10 that's just going to buy into this selfless Patriots way. you're not really a star idea. Like that's very difficult to replicate. I don't, I, I maintain that Tom Brady is winning this divorce temporarily. Again, I think that if Belichick doesn't win a Super Bowl, another Super Bowl, we're going to look back on this whole thing very differently, especially if Tom Brady puts up numbers or has any bit of success in Tampa Bay, which I think he will.
Starting point is 01:20:39 But if Popovich never wins another NBA championship, we're still going to consider Popovich a Hall of Famer in a lot of legend. Of course. And if Belichick wins a bunch of games but not a Super Bowl, I still think what will say is Belichick is the best coach of all time and Brady as the best quarterback, you can't win without a great quarterback. And I don't think it'll hurt Belichick's legacy, but I think we will acknowledge it's a quarterback league first and a coach's league second. We will. And I think that these last two years of Brady's career will kind of be more critical of how that breakup went because he puts up numbers, which we think that he will.
Starting point is 01:21:16 It'll kind of seem like, you know, Belichick made a mistake not putting his arms around him to get him to finish his career in New England. We'll talk more about this story on Joy Chat today on Caffeine at 3.30 Eastern 1230 Pacific. Go download the app. It's free. That's Joy Chat on Caffeine later today. So Cam Newton reportedly passed a physical setup by the Panthers and his agency team this week with both his shoulder and foot checking out well, but Carolina obviously still release
Starting point is 01:21:44 him yesterday after nine years with the team. After his release, he posted a series of photos and videos on Instagram of himself working out with a caption. I'm free and hungry. No pity party. Just work. Now, you are much more, I think, critical of Cam Newton than I am or maybe more skeptical of Cam Newton than I am. I think Cam Newton is injured and considering the current climate that we're in where nobody can meet with each other and you can't have your team. doctors do your own evaluation. You can't bring a guy in. There's a lot of skepticism around Cam Newton, but I am fully in the Nick Wright camp of I don't understand what exactly is happening with Cam Newton. I do think that everything sort of started to, I think the start of
Starting point is 01:22:33 the spiral with Cam Newton began with the press conference after the Super Bowl, which I have always defended him on. I actually prefer for my quarterback to be distraught after losing the biggest game of his life. I don't think that the media is owed any sort of particular mood after that kind of loss. But I think that Cam Newton has a lot of football left to play. And I think if he ends up in a place where he has the opportunity to show that, he's going to be successful and prove everyone wrong. I'm not saying he's going to go on to win a Super Bowl, but he's a league MVP and was just into Super Bowl a few years ago. This drop off because of the style of play that he has where he doesn't get down and he takes huge hits and he's been injured, along with, you know, people being
Starting point is 01:23:13 critical of the hats and the scarves and the, you know, fashion or whatever, thinking that he's distracted. I think all plays a role in it. But I don't think he is a bad quarterback because of that. You're, he can't, if you establish this, he can't be a backup. You can't have Tebow as a backup. Kaepernick can't, you can't have a superstar as a backup. So that's kind of one of the things in the NFL.
Starting point is 01:23:35 Like, if you go with Cam, you got to roll with Cam. If you're going to go with Tebow, you got to go with Tebow. You don't want a superstar. celebrity as a backup. So the question becomes, do I want to build an offense around Cam? That's the issue. It's not that he can't play. Kaepernick was always good enough to be a backup.
Starting point is 01:23:54 Tebow won seven straight games in a playoff game. Most backups can't do it. Camkin is way better than 99% of the backups. But because he's a celebrity, coaches, so you have, there's only one option with Cam. Let's get Cam and we're rolling with him for four years. And that's his problem. It's not that he can't play. It's you got to go all in on his style, his personality.
Starting point is 01:24:18 And I think with so many good young quarterbacks out there, people are like, I'll go for a young kid. It's not that he can't play. There's a lot of, by the way, Jay Culler could still play at the end. He was just a pain in the butt. Jeff George could play at the end. He was a pain in the butt. I don't think Cam's, I think Cam's the better dude than like a Jeff George
Starting point is 01:24:37 and even easier to get along with than Jay Cutler. But Cam's big problem is he has to be a star. He's such a, you can't bring him in with Mitch Trubisky. No, it's going to be. You can't. You just, he's too big of a star. So joy with the news. Well, that's the news.
Starting point is 01:24:57 And thanks for stopping by. The Heard Lye News. Saw this story rolled my eyes. NFL general managers are concerned that in this current environment, offseason activities, facilities closed, they will not have enough time to really dig deep and get. get all the information they need for the NFL draft. Talk to the hand.
Starting point is 01:25:22 Well, these days talk to the fist. Give me a break. Every top GM in this league has film. You can do the interview thing, but the combine's done and the film's done. If you don't have the answers by now, you're not a good GM. I called a GM about seven, eight days of that. ago, I think it was. I went to lunch with a current college football player. He knew Andrew Thomas, went to high school with him, the offensive tackle from Georgia. And we were just talking about
Starting point is 01:25:56 Andrew and he said all these things about Andrew, family football, nice stuff. I called a GM that needs an offensive tackle. I said, I've got some interesting information. I told him, he goes, yeah, that's exactly what our guys have. This was a week ago. Here's the other thing about the NFL. it's a very transitional league. You don't really know if a guy can play until he's in the league. I'll give you an example. Let's take the 2015 draft. You're not going to believe these numbers.
Starting point is 01:26:27 Nine of the top 10 picks from the 2015 draft are now on different teams. None of the top 18 running backs from the 2015 draft are on the team that took them. two of the 34 wide receivers are still with the same team from the 2015 draft. None of the seven quarterbacks taken in the draft are with the team that selected them. Are you hearing what I'm saying? You don't know if a guy can play until he's in the league. There's about 15 guys a draft.
Starting point is 01:27:06 Every GM I talk to says the first 15, 16 picks are your best players. After that, it's fit. You got about 17 guys a draft that everybody's willing to pay first round money to. If you have pick 18, 19, and on until the beginning of the third round, they're all good players. It'll depend on the coach they get, the system they fit. There's only a handful of players per draft that can just kind of work. I mean, I'll give you an example. Chase Young is just going to work.
Starting point is 01:27:37 Jeff Okuda, cornerback. He's just going to kind of work. I mean, Zeke is just, Sequin Barkley. They're going to work. They can be a little better here, a little better there. Do the Giants have a good offensive line? No, Sequin Barclay still works. Okay, most, Andrew Luck was just going to work.
Starting point is 01:27:52 The Colts were a mess. It worked. Elway was just going to work. Marino was just going to work. So you don't know until a guy gets in the league if he can truly work. And those 2015 numbers are when they didn't have a coronavirus. And you had all the information. And virtually nobody, five years later, is with the same team.
Starting point is 01:28:11 If you don't, listen, this league is about a couple of things. get a good head coach, get a star quarterback, and then protect him and get people that work with him. That's it. And that will ensure a higher percentage of picks working. If you have the right coach, hire a great coach, get a superstar quarterback, and then after that, protect him, get a good offensive line, and then just he'll ensure, he'll be the ultimate lubricator that a higher percentage of your picks work. Because if you get the wrong quarterback, nobody looks good.
Starting point is 01:28:44 And if you get Russell Wilson, everybody looks good. You get Patrick Mahomes. You know how many people that Aaron Rogers, he's made the Packers look like they're brilliantly run. I mean, they win the division, they get to the playoffs. They've been lousy on defense for most Aaron Rogers' career. Russell Wilson's own lines have been dreadful. Patrick Mahomes overcomes defenses. Folks, get the quarterback right and the coach right.
Starting point is 01:29:11 It's the best you can do in ensuring your draft picks usually. work. Coming up next, good stuff today. Chris Broussard. I think Lakers LeBron, the NBA, knows they got to get this season in. Chris Broussard's joining us next. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific. Weekday is the odd couple. Chris Brousard and Rob Parker, and he is joining us now. So Mark
Starting point is 01:32:49 Cuban said yesterday, you can tell he's the business guy. He's looking at all these big macro trends with the virus. He said, let's resume by the middle of May, less games, but we'll get it done. Would anybody complain in your opinion, Chris? Well, first of all, I don't even know if that's going to be possible, you know, with the CDC and the things that they're saying. Obviously, everyone associated with the NBA wants to get things started as soon as possible. But it seems like June is really the earliest they're going to get started. Now here's one other problem with what Cuban is saying.
Starting point is 01:33:29 Remember, all the facilities are closed right now. So you have players who aren't able to work out not only at their facilities, but they can't even go to a local gym, a lifetime fitness or somewhere, and get a workout in. So you can't just throw guys right back into games because they're going to be out of shape. And that's when you increase the opportunity for them to get injured. So the fact that the facilities are now shut, if that remains for a little while longer, there's no way.
Starting point is 01:34:02 I don't think there's any way anyway that they can start in mid-May. I think he's being overly optimistic. If you just went straight to a playoff, let's be honest about this. Everything's been established. Are we really going to play another 17 regular season games to get the wizards or blazers in? If you just said, if you just said, just like LeBron's first title in Miami, it was a strike short in year. Right. Nobody cares.
Starting point is 01:34:25 We don't talk about that. If you just said, it's been established. We know who's good. We know who's not. And went right to the playoffs. You could absolutely start in mid to almost late June. And that's three months from now. Why not just do that?
Starting point is 01:34:41 I felt the same exact way up until, again, a week or week and a half ago when they locked down the facilities. You're right. They played on average 65 games for each team. We know who the best eight are in each conference. If you haven't established yourself as a playoff team yet, then tough. I get that. But here's the problem. You're going to have guys off 60 to 80 days, okay, without being able to get an NBA shape.
Starting point is 01:35:10 So number one, if you throw them right into the playoffs, the quality of play is going to be poor. And when your most important games are on the line, you want teams to be close to their best, if not at their best. Secondly, as I said, you're going to increase the chances of the guys getting injured if you just throw them right into the playoffs. I think, Colin, they're going to need, they're going to have to play like a five or six game regular season just to get guys back. in NBA shape. Because if you don't get them inBA shape and you throw them in there, God forbid some of your stars get injured. Like let's say if a James Harden,
Starting point is 01:35:50 because he's not in NBA shape, got injured in the playoffs and an injury that might keep him out for next season. So you run the risk of not only messing up this season, but next season as well if you just throw these guys right into the playoffs and they're not in shape. So I think for those reasons, plus the owner, really want to play at least 70 games because that's the contract they have with their regional
Starting point is 01:36:16 network where they can get the TV Monday day money they always promise them 70 games so there's a number of reasons for the NBA to play five six seven regular season games before they restart the playoffs we know LeBron has influence with Adam silver he got a longer break in the all-star game less back-to-backs I don't think LeBron wants to throw this season away And this Laker roster is not getting younger. It's not a lot of free agents on the market. And I don't say this. I would totally understand LeBron saying, hey, Adam,
Starting point is 01:36:51 let's try to get this puppy. Let's not throw this season out. And I don't have any problem with that because I do think we can get it in. What do you make of the Lakers spot where they're old? They've got some brittle players. This is not a year you want to just throw away. No, Colin, you hit it on the money. And Rob Parker and I talked about this last night on our radio show.
Starting point is 01:37:10 of all the players that are hurt by, and all the players want to play, so they're all hurt by this. No one is hurt more than LeBron James, because he's not getting any younger. And people want to look at, oh, he's only 35, 36 next year. No, don't look at the number of the age. Look at the wear and tear.
Starting point is 01:37:31 It's his 17th season. Look, I would assume when LeBron comes back because of how hard he works and, you know, his training and the money spends on his body, I think next year in his 18th year, he'll be very good. But I don't know that for sure. So every year that goes on,
Starting point is 01:37:50 you know, history and logic tells us, LeBron's going to get a little bit worse. And so he's playing great basketball right now. Danny Green's not getting any younger. Avery Bradley, who has problems staying healthy. You know, who knows what the future holds for him. they are a team where this year is probably LeBron's best chance to win a championship. I won't write him off next year, but there's no question about it.
Starting point is 01:38:22 This season is its best opportunity to win a ring. And I said this, Colin, on your couch before last year, two years ago when LeBron was considering going to the Lakers. You have to understand you don't go to the Lakers and make the fans happy just because you got to the second round of the play. off. LeBron has to come here and win a championship. All of the other Lakers except for Elgin Baylor who were on his level, won one championship. So LeBron's got to win a ring, and this is probably his best chance to do it. By the way, your source is you talk to him. This morning, are they optimistic or pessimistic? Well, it's funny because initially guys were very optimistic when, you know, they announced a couple weeks ago the season is suspended.
Starting point is 01:39:12 I mean, to the point of we'll be back in three weeks, we'll be back in 30 days. And then when they closed, shut down the facility, guys got very, you know, doubtful. They really got doubtful and pessimistic about whether or not they're going to be able to really play this season. But what's driving everyone from players to executives to the league office is the loss of revenue.
Starting point is 01:39:38 And so they're going to do. everything they can, Colin, to play this season in some way, shape, or form, because if they don't play the season, they stand to lose, according to reports, $1 billion plus. So they all want to play, even if it means playing into September. So while guys are a little pessimistic, they do feel like, look, we got to play this season. We have got to play this season because there's too much money to be lost if we don't. Odd couple. Chris Brousard, Rob Parker, Fox Sports Radio, absolute riot.
Starting point is 01:40:13 Seven to ten, Pacific, PM Eastern. Good stuff. 7 to 10 p.m. Eastern, excuse me, on Fox Sports Radio and IHeart Radio. Thanks for stopping by today, bud. Thanks, man. Stay safe, thanks. It's interesting. I just, you know, it's, I don't think you lack empathy or compassion wanting to play. To me, we're, you know, we're late March, April, May, June. can you start the playoffs by late June? Wrap them up by August 7th.
Starting point is 01:40:42 Two days for the draft, seven days for free agency, Labor Day weekend. Football, take it away. I think it works. I think the key is you do camp in about 10 weeks. Then you do about two weeks at camp. Let's say three months from today. Three months from today, the playoffs begin in earnest. And then if you have to play the first couple of months,
Starting point is 01:41:07 the rounds with no fans, you do it. Tighten up the camera angle, play. I mean, God, networks can pump in fake crowd. Doesn't matter. The bottom line is you play the games. But I do think there are some signs with corona virus. I think you have really good leadership in California and Washington State and New York City. Those are some hot spots. I do see some little light at the end of the tunnel economically. I don't know. You know, it's obviously a very fluid story. A Jordan Palmer, brother of Carson, just an unbelievable NFL quarterback guru.
Starting point is 01:41:41 He works with all these guys, joining us next hour. Loaded as well, The Herd. Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd, weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific. On Fox Sports Radio, FS1, and the IHeard Radio app. Ah, this is The Herd. Live in Los Angeles, wherever you may be,
Starting point is 01:42:04 And however, you may be listening. We're on IHeart radio. We're on Fox Sports Radio. We're on FS1. We're on Sirius XM Channel 83. It's been remarkable. We've had eight shows now with no games. And I don't remember ever being this full.
Starting point is 01:42:22 I mean, there's so many, we got Emmanuel Sanders today sitting around. There's so many great athletes sitting around. So people ask me, how are you doing it? And I'm like, this has been the easiest eight days of my life. NFL free agents. see Tom Brady goes to the Buccaneers, and all these great pro athletes are sitting around their houses can't do anything. So this has been, this is, listen, in three weeks, I may be going, you know,
Starting point is 01:42:46 first of all, I'll be in my house for another three weeks straight. But I've kind of got, I'm in a habit. Joy Taylor's joining me. I called my wife this morning, and I said, I've just got a new habit. I come home, I go in an hour and a half walk. Sometimes I go to my buddy's house. He's got a garage with workout stuff. I put my surgical gloves on so I don't get any, you know,
Starting point is 01:43:04 virus stuff. And I take a 15, 20 minute nap. I make dinner, banana bread, something fun with my daughter. Then I pour a cocktail at 5.30 and I watch movies. I've got a new, I've got like a new sort of routine. And it's, you know, I just think you just kind of get a cuss. Now, I'm lucky in California. You can walk around our neighborhood. I'm not cooped up in a small apartment or anything. So Joy, as far as you, you're going on walks? What are you doing? My routine hasn't really changed very much. I don't know if that's has been a lot about me, but other than going in to the studio, I mean, my hours are exactly the same. I'm waking up at exactly the same time.
Starting point is 01:43:42 I'm done with work around the same time. So, you know, around like 2 o'clock or so, I'm done. And then, you know, I take a nap. I work out. I, you know, have a glass of wine, eat dinner and, yeah, like watch TV or, you know, FaceTime somebody. So my routine hasn't changed very much. I know it's changed, you know, because we're still working. Yes.
Starting point is 01:44:00 Which I'm very grateful for. People who are not working right now, you know, they're having. probably a harder time adjusting to a new routine or having the kids at home. So, you know, we're very, we're lucky in that in that space. But we're all figuring out how to, you know, adjust to this new way of life, which is temporary. Just keep that in mind. If you're starting to feel overwhelmed, this is not going to be forever. I want to talk about something.
Starting point is 01:44:22 So there's nothing on the sports calendar. The next big thing on the sports calendar is the NFL draft. Why doesn't the NFL just go like seven days of it? Why not? It's the only thing out there. This is one of these things people would complain about because a lot of people are reticent to change in life. I've lived in four, I've gone cross-country four times. Joy has done it a half a dozen times.
Starting point is 01:44:45 Some people just don't like change. One of the things the NFL has done, better than any league in my life, they manipulate the media. They move their free agency. They're constantly manipulating us. This is where baseball is a dud. They can't figure it out. Baseball now is talking about their baseball season. And instead of just shortening it down to 100 games, they play 162, they're going to try to get all their games in.
Starting point is 01:45:09 Double headers on Wednesday, double headers on Sundays, they just don't get it. Wrap up your season, shorten your season, modify your season. The NBA gets this. The NBA wants to change its schedule, Adam Silver. Why? Because legalized gambling is only going to make the NFL more popular. So he wants to get his sport out of October and November, the heart of football, and into the summer where all he has to compete against is regular season baseball.
Starting point is 01:45:35 Adam Silver gets it. Why doesn't the NFL put the first round of the NFL draft on Thursday? And then the second round, that's it on Friday. Take the weekend off. Monday to the third and fourth. Those are still guys that are going to start in the NFL. Tuesday to the fifth, sixth, and seven. And you say to yourself, why the weekend?
Starting point is 01:46:01 This will sound like a humble brag, but this is the reality of leagues. When you get guys like me or Stephen A or Skip or your, you know, your popular shows on ESPN and Fox, the opinion networks, we have the biggest collective audiences, radio or TV. You want us talking about you. So, for instance, last year I had 340 million Facebook downloads. Most of those are NFL and NBA. That's a lot of free publicity. Stephen A's got a big audience.
Starting point is 01:46:34 Skip's got a big audience. We do. The Dan Patrick's. We are the guys that have the biggest collective audiences, right? We don't work on weekends. Don't worry about weekends. Thursday, Friday, Monday, Tuesday, you want to stretch this puppy out and get the most free publicity
Starting point is 01:46:53 from the hosts with the biggest audiences when they work Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday. You want Dan Patrick talking about this thing for nine days. You want Stephen A. talking about it for nine days. You want Skip Bayless talking about it. It's nothing against the weekend. But just put Monday, Thursday.
Starting point is 01:47:16 So we're going to talk about it, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday before the draft. Then Thursday, first round. We all talk about it. We all talk about it. In fact, I could make an argument. You do the second round Monday, the third and fourth Tuesday. The fifth, six, seventh. More free Facebook views. Now, I know you're going to say yourself,
Starting point is 01:47:36 nobody cares about you, Colin. Blah, blah, blah, blah. Okay, they don't care about me. I have no audience. But they care about Skip and Stephen A and Max Kellerman and Dan Patrick. What you're trying to do, the NFL's been genius with this,
Starting point is 01:47:49 is manipulating the media, getting people like Joy and I to talk about them all the time. So they're constantly moving their free agency and their schedule and their draft. to get the most bang for the buck. This is what baseball just doesn't get. August is wide open.
Starting point is 01:48:06 Why aren't you wrapping up your season August 5th? Four weeks of baseball playoffs, hand it off to football. The NBA gets this. This is what Adam Silver is really great at. He sees all this gambling. What's the first thing Adam Silver said about gambling? We're going to do with gambling.
Starting point is 01:48:23 I like gambling. Gambling's great. He embraced it. The second thing he realizes is, you know what? It's no first thing. going up against the NFL in October in November and December. It's no fun.
Starting point is 01:48:34 It's no fun. We can't win. We're not only going up against the NFL, we're going up against college football. We can't win. So Adam Silver wants to start this puppy at Christmas. But then, once the drafts over in April, and the free agency's over for the NFL, he can own May. He can own June. He can own
Starting point is 01:48:53 July. He can own early August. And then hand it to the college football and pro football. four months of owning me, of owning Stephen A, of owning Skip, of owning Shannon, of owning Patrick, of all, you know, you own us. Four months, free publicity on our YouTube channels, our Facebook channels, our radio networks, our podcasts,
Starting point is 01:49:15 the NBA gets it, Silver Smart. Ask yourself, anybody out there run a business. What are you all trying to get? Free marketing. Every single business person, man or woman listening, If I said to you, hey, you want some free marketing, not a business person in the world wouldn't sign up. So you have, once the draft is over, because I don't talk about OTAs too much, as much as I talk NFL. May, June, July, August, four open months.
Starting point is 01:49:46 NBA, start at Christmas, own it. You not only own the months, you own me. Like, that's the game. That's what the NFL's always figured out. We're a television show. Let's manipulate the media and get, All the free discussions, this is not difficult. This is so smart.
Starting point is 01:50:05 And so, like, to me, I think what's going to happen to the NBA, they're going to have a season, and they're going to push it, push it, push it, and they're going to find out, you know what? We don't compete against football. Right now, you're giving your first three months of your NBA season. You're just tossing it in the garbage can. Your television ratings are awful. I don't talk about you. Most of the top hosts, we're all in the college of pro football.
Starting point is 01:50:27 And once the NFL playoffs start, I can't even give a segment to the NBA. So why not instead of having basically think about your sport as a campfire? The first three months of the NBA season right now have a big wet blanket over it. Got no campfire. But if you started at Christmas and Christmas Day always gets a good NBA rating, then by the time January comes around in the NFL, half the teams are gone, right? So half the cities are like, okay, my NFL team's done. I want to go to games.
Starting point is 01:51:01 And you can't wait, right? Your NFL team was disappointing. Oh, I can go to an NBA game. And they just carry it. Maybe I'm just out of my gourd. And I know here's the pushback I'm going to get. Nobody cares about you guys. You want to make a bet.
Starting point is 01:51:17 You don't think you don't want Stephen A. talking about you and Skip talking about you and Patrick talking about you and all these free, free every day, three hours. What league? in the world isn't dying for us. I remember years ago I'm walking up and down. I go to a Laker game and Adam Silver had just become the new commissioner. And I'm walking, you know, I'm probably sitting in the nosebleeds, but we pass each other somewhere in the arena.
Starting point is 01:51:42 And Adam Silver is like, oh, I listened to your podcast yesterday. And I'm thinking, the commissioner listens to my, of course he does. It's his league. He wants to hear what all the opinionists are saying. So if he's listening to me, he's listening to 20. guys. So, and I know I'll get so much pushback on this. Nobody cares about you guys. Manipulate me. I'm here to be manipulated. I'm here to be manipulated NBA. Move your schedule back. You'll get more publicity from me because right now, October, November, December, and I'm an NBA guy.
Starting point is 01:52:15 I ignore you. Joy and I love the NBA. We can't talk about you. The people are into the NFL and college football. I got to talk about Ohio State. Lamar Jackson, Patrick Mahomes. I can't even say, I can barely, I mean, Joy and I's rule basically in the football season, LeBron. LeBron's the only thing that breaks through in October, November, December, and the NBA. We'll sneak into LeBron topic. We can't bring in big topics October, November, December. It's very, maybe a Wednesday midweek, but you're trapped. We've got to talk NFL.
Starting point is 01:52:47 That's where the numbers go. I'm just rambling here, but I got to tell you on this. This is the kind of stuff that I sit and think about all the time as you, all sorts. sports is, is a calendar. Figure it out and move your sport, not move it, adjust it to the most free months available. And I do think a lot of people are reticent to move anything to August because people vacation in August. I do think there's a lot of people out there that say, well, you know, we don't want to do too much in July and August. It's the summer. Let me ask you this, the summer in the South. You ever been in the South in the summer? You can't go on. Everybody's inside.
Starting point is 01:53:25 Everybody's inside because it's too damn hot. You ever been to a summer in Texas. You think of the Mavericks are in a playoff game in July in Texas, and it's 109 in Dallas. You're not going to be inside. So the advantage you have in the, you know, July and August is for the south, for Texas, a lot of the northeast places. It's hot. You're not going to watch LeBron and the Lakers July 15th, really. It's on TV and you're like, you've been hanging out all day on the lake. You've been hanging out in the lake. You've been hanging out in the golf course. You come home. Lakers are on. You're not, you're going to watch that 17th rerun of the Golden Girls?
Starting point is 01:54:01 You've been out all day. You open a cold one and you watch an NBA playoff game. Sometimes, I've got to be honest, I should run a leak. Jordan Palmer's around the corner. If you're buying a used car, the internet can confuse you with vague pricing, not anymore. Go to True Car, get an upfront price dealer online, search from over a million pre-owned vehicles. True car, buy smarter, drive happier. Jordan Palmer.
Starting point is 01:54:26 Be sure to catch live editions of the herd. weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports Radio, FS1, and the IHard Radio app. Welcome back. I had nachos last night. Here's the way, right before I went to bed, too. Here's the thing I figured out about nachos. If they're ever offered, eat them and worry about the repercussions later. Seriously, there's never been in time in America to say no to nachos. I don't give it's breakfast. I had nachos last night, homemade. I didn't even care. I'm like, That's probably too late. I'm going to bed.
Starting point is 01:55:02 And I thought, you know what? You eat them and you worry about the fallout later. I kind of feel that way about chips overall. I really never turned down chips. Why, why would you? That would be stupid. No smart person has ever said, hmm, there's a chip.
Starting point is 01:55:16 I'll pass on it. I mean, seriously, I got corn nuts right here. I am flying through bags of these. You love corn nuts. But you and I are similar. We're salty snackers. We're salty people. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:55:29 Off the air, we're salty, on the air. we're salty, we like our salty. Jordan Palmer's going to show up in a couple of minutes. I saw this, by the way, Belichick, nice PR release in regards to Stephen Gostkowski, he just did a really nice PR release. So in the last year and a half,
Starting point is 01:55:47 Belichick's done a Tom Brady PR release, a Grongk PR release, and a Stephen Gotsky PR release. You know what that says? They're rebuilding offensively. New England fans and Dallas Cowboy fans. You're the two fan bases that got to come to terms with something. New England is rebuilding offensively. You don't lose your dynasty quarterback, your dynasty kicker,
Starting point is 01:56:10 a top five Hall of Fame tight end in a year and a half. And Edelman, by the way, has got about 100 catches left. He's not what he was a year or two ago. You're rebuilding. You've got to come clean with this, New England fans. Kansas City's got like six great offensive players, offensive in their prime. Baltimore's got five, including linemen, six, in their prime. You've got none. New England doesn't have a tight end, an elite tight end, an elite receiver, an elite running back, an elite quarterback in their prime. You're rebuilding on offense. I didn't say defense. I didn't say coaching. You are rebuilding on offense. You cannot win the AFC rebuilding an offense. Not against Andy Reed and the Chiefs, not against Lamar, John Harbaugh and the Ravens. And Dallas Cowboys are another team. That's the other fan base. Dallas, you lost your leading Saturday.
Starting point is 01:57:00 guy, a playmaking safety, a 7, 800-yard wide receiver. Dallas has just lost too many people. And now you've lost your first ballot Hall of Fame center. Like Dallas has got to come clean on something. They're not a Super Bowl contender this year. They've simply lost too many productive people. Robert Quinn, Randall Cobb, Jeff Heath, Travis Frederick, you just can't keep losing. Byron Jones, nobody threw to that side of the field. And New England's got to come clean. Offensively, they're rebuilding. I don't think you can lose Dallas's production or be rebuilding in the AFC and win it.
Starting point is 01:57:40 So it doesn't mean it'll be bad. Dallas could have a winning record. New England could win a bunch of games. But you've got to be honest with this. Steven Godkowski, Tom Brady, Gronkowski, these are first ballot hall of fame guys. You just don't lose those in a year and a half and go, yeah, we're just going to keep this puppy humming.
Starting point is 01:57:57 Now, is Jared Stidham good? It could be. I know a guy that knows Jordan Palmer. Quarterback coach, quarterback summit, played in the NFL for four years, drafted in the NFL as well. Currently working with Joe Burrow, by the way, Jared Stidham, among others. So let me ask you about Jared Stidham. I remember him from Auburn, pocket passer, accurate thrower. That's what I remember.
Starting point is 01:58:20 You don't won some big games, lost some big games, but a nice player, certainly a draftable player. if I've never seen Jared Stedham before, and you're now working with him. What's he do well? What's he got to get better at? Well, you know, I met Jared when he was, I think about 16 years old, so I've been around him for a while now.
Starting point is 01:58:39 But in terms of just spinning the ball, throwing it, velocity, you know, how efficient his spiral is, control accuracy. You know, you named a couple of guys that work with. I was to work with a lot of other guys, too, that are going to Pro Bowls and, you know, one that just won a Super Bowl. And he's at the upper echelon in terms of arm talent, accuracy, spinning it.
Starting point is 01:59:01 I work with Wilson footballs, and we do a lot of stuff in the off season where they have a chip in the ball. And we measure things like spiral efficiency, velocity, spin rate. And we measured against a lot of guys. And Jared is top in basically every category. So from an analytical standpoint, the dude can spin it. But one of the misconceptions about Jarrett, and this is, happened mainly, you know, and having conversations leading up to the draft two years ago when he came out, was if you flip his sophomore and junior year, he left after his junior year. If you flip those two years, he's a high draft pick.
Starting point is 01:59:36 You know, his sophomore year, he kind of took over the game and beat Alabama in the Iron Bowl. Yep. And had some monster wins, huge bowl game. And his junior year, they had a bunch of injuries and, you know, whatever the story is, right? Gus Malzahn's offense is not necessarily conducive for dudes win in Heisman. And they've addressed that because I work with Beau Nix, the Auburn quarterback now. They've addressed that bringing a new office coordinator. But Jarrett coming out was just a guy who bought in.
Starting point is 02:00:01 He went to his second school. He was with Art Bryles and Baylor when all that stuff went down and, you know, transferred. And, you know, at Auburn, he just kind of bought in and was a great leader. He can spin it as good as anybody I've been around. And he just got to fit, you know, last off season, he's in the quarterback meeting room with Tom Brady and Brian Hoyer. Okay, how about this for a stat? 31 years NFL experience and 27 or something like that in that offense. I might be off of the,
Starting point is 02:00:30 but just as much information as you can possibly have in a room of how to run that system, plus Josh McDaniels, plus some of these other guys. So in terms of sitting for a year and learning, he just went to MIT. And in terms of, you know, I know you mentioned, you know, that Brady had bought in and he was, you know, really bought into the system and was a Belichick guy and helped create the Patriot way. Jared's a younger version who's going to come in and do that.
Starting point is 02:00:57 He's just going to start off spinning it, and he played much bigger college ball. I think Joe Burrow is a good prospect. I don't think he has a big arm. So Jared Stidham, let's talk Joe Burrow. Stid him from what you're saying, probably has a stronger pure arm than Joe Burrow, right? I would say that most of the quarterbacks in the NFL, yes, Jared. Wow. Okay.
Starting point is 02:01:16 It's upper echelon. Okay. So I've made the comp with Joe Burrow to Tony Romo. franchise guy exciting can move athletic good arm not not world class depends a lot you know tony's early career he had a bad o line in front of him that's the sad part about romo when the old line finally got good he was getting older and tony got beat up a lot had to make plays and sometimes let it rip and it got picked in key spots but i always loved romo is is romo and burrow a fair comp i think some attributes um on on the good side of of romo just a gamer
Starting point is 02:01:50 It's a part that fans never gave Romo credit to that ironically he's getting credit for in his broadcasting career is just his IQ. It's what he knows about football. I mean, he's one of the most brilliant football minds that I've had a chance to sit down and have a conversation with. And Joe is, there's a lot of comparisons there. Joe, look, I've been around these guys a lot. And with all the comparisons with Joe, I've heard Montana, I've heard Peyton. I've heard all these things, right, Brady. But you've got to compare Joe Burrow to any of those guys you're going to compare him to.
Starting point is 02:02:20 You have to compare them to how they work when they were transitioning from college to pro. I'm not going to compare a 23-year-old with a 33-year-old. That's not fair. And it's too indicative of where they go in the situation they're in. But this point in his career, leaving college entering the NFL, I think you've got, in terms of, I've been around a lot of guys, a lot of them that are starting and winning and playing and going to Pro Bowl. This is for sure the most confident player I've been around, and all the good sense of that word, by the way. And then in terms of maturity, this is probably the most mature guy I've been around.
Starting point is 02:02:54 And when I talk about maturity, I don't mean that he has great manners and that he, you know, pulls the seat out for his girlfriend at dinner and he tucks his shirt in and says, yes, sir. I mean the maturity of think about what just happened in this guy's life, okay? I met him in June last year. And I'll be honest with you, I saw it. I did some media stuff in July and I said, hey, there's someone that no one's talking about. I went on Bucky Brooks and Danis Jermites podcast, and I said, hey, look, I think it was July or August. I said, look, there's a guy no one's talking about who's got a chance to be the top pick and win a national championship this year.
Starting point is 02:03:26 And he said, who, Jaylon Hurts, you know, Justin Fields, Trevor Lawrence? No. Joe Burrow. Because my eye always goes early on in evaluating prospects to maturity and confidence. And if you look at Joe Burrow, everyone thinks that his life changed in the last 12 months. No, it changed in the last three. the first six, seven games of the year, LSU was rolling, but he was going from his dorm to the facility and then back to his dorm.
Starting point is 02:03:53 He wasn't experiencing the craziness that was happening. That stadium sells out anyway, whether they're good or not. It wasn't until the end of the year when all of a sudden they have everything to lose. They're 8 and 0, 9 and 0, 10 and 0, 11 and 0. He's got the Heisman stuff, which is a huge deal. He's got the playoffs. With folks who have been to the Super Bowl and been to the College of the Bowl playoffs, A lot of people, you and I have a mutual friend in Trent Doper, says, hey, these college football
Starting point is 02:04:19 playoffs, these are like a bigger deal. There's just so much stuff and attention and noise around these games. So for him to go through the last month of the season and handle that the way that he did and just kind of get better and not let it affect anything on him negatively, that's the maturity I look for. So I don't know if he's Montana or Brady or Peyton or any of those things, but if he does have a lesser arm than Jared Sidham, I'm just not concerned about it because the two most important traits that I see, he has as much of it as I've ever seen. I like Tua. I would
Starting point is 02:04:56 draft him and roll the dice. I've said I think he's either going to be like legendary or you're going to have to look for a new GM because I do think, you know, I worry about his first year in the league. I worry about his health. Give me, you know, Tua, you've seen him. I don't know if you've work with him, but would it be better off to maybe have him sit for a year? What do you make of the injuries? What do you make him as a prospect? Well, you know, full disclaimer here, I would love for all these guys to sit for a year. Every year, every year, every guy, I think it's too valuable. And we can all sit here and say, look what happened with Patrick Mahomes, and that was perfect. But, you know, there's quality reps, too. I mean, Sam, Donald, and Josh Allen, guys,
Starting point is 02:05:35 two guys we've talked a lot about. You know, they've got a chance to play six or eight games. their rookie year, which was really valuable. So I do think I'd love for all these guys to sit. My brother was the number one second in the draft, didn't play a snap. But with Tua, I think that he is the poster child for needing to sit. And here's why. I agree. I think he's Breezer bus.
Starting point is 02:05:57 And the bust won't come from him not being good enough. It would come from injuries. And this guy's got a long history of injuries. And there's, Albert Brewer had an interesting staty. He had a tweet a while back. and he named seven players first-round quarterback that got hurt in college, major injuries, and got hurt again. And it was Marietta, Locker, RG3, Carson Wint,
Starting point is 02:06:20 Sam Bradford, Deshawn Watson. And that doesn't mean who is getting hurt. That just makes me go, hmm, I also look at the, and I know Alabama is the premier program, but in terms of the medical and the rehab and all of that stuff, there's still college players doing whatever college coaches and staff say to do. Yes.
Starting point is 02:06:40 Not pro athletes who are going to go out and get second, third, fourth, fifth opinions and drop whatever money needs to be dropped to be able to get the best opinions, right? And so with Tua, I look at this and I go, and I've said this on your show before. I believe that quarterbacks get really good at the things that they have to do to survive. And Tua can move around, create, run really fast, stop and throw it as good as any prospect. Better than anybody in this draft. I mean, he's amazing in the pocket.
Starting point is 02:07:08 And now I look at it, I go, okay, no off season. I don't have any inside information. I just think that this is the 2010 lockout all over again, and these dudes aren't doing anything until July. That's my personal opinion. Yeah, I agree. So no off season, you know, multiple coordinators in college. And one thing about Alabama is they run the offense
Starting point is 02:07:29 that they think they need to run to win a national championship, not to get quarterback strapped at high. And so I look at it, I go, okay, he's got no off season. he's coming off the injury. If he goes and has to play early, and I'm right that he's going to do what he has to do to survive, which is going to be run around and make plays, he's going to take a lot more hit.
Starting point is 02:07:49 One of the things about Drew Brees, Brady, even Rommel, these guys, is they just don't take a lot of unnecessary hit. They get hit, but they don't put themselves in compromising positions because they've been playing so long they know how to not do that. But a young, aggressive, confident, athletic quarterback, we've seen it with Deshawn. We watched Patrick do it for his first year playing. I watched Josh Allen do it two years in a row now.
Starting point is 02:08:13 Sam Darnold's doing. There's a long list of these guys. If Tua does that, I just think that there's going to be some real concern. So if somebody draft him, they've got to be willing to commit. And, you know, I don't think Redskins take him at two, and I think people are going to want to take him at two. That just means that one of these GMs is trading up, giving up a lot, and have to be willing to not play that guy this first year. I don't know.
Starting point is 02:08:40 I think this could be a cloudy situation. Jordan Palmer, quarterback coach, quarterback summit, a program that helps quarterbacks reach their potential former NFLer. I love talking to you, man. Thanks for coming on. I love it. My pleasure. One of these days, we'll get back to FS1 Studio and Jordan will join us.
Starting point is 02:08:59 Jordan Palmer. So Stidham, big time arm, burrow, big time confidence, Tua needs a big time season to sit behind somebody and get super, super healthy. Stop waiting to see what happens when life gets back to normal. Take control to your future now. Go to My Computercareer.edu. Free career evaluation today. Mycomputercareer.
Starting point is 02:09:19 Dottingu. No, no, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. You know, Colin, all these people that you, you respect are saying really nice things about Joe Burrow. was a pretty serious endorsement. He also called Tua Breeze or Bust. And that's bait.
Starting point is 02:09:43 That is ex. So now if Jordan Palmer says it, I buy it totally. I think too is totally. By the way, Breeze's head injuries in his career. Right. And that's what you said.
Starting point is 02:09:53 You said he's Breezer bus. Breezer. I never bought the Baker as Breeze. I never bought it. I watch Tua and I go watch old Purdue films with Breeze. And I'm like, that's what he looked like. I mean,
Starting point is 02:10:04 they feel the exact same to me. But does it make you feel any better about Burrow that he said he's very mature? Because you like mature guys. I like maturity. I am myself not mature, but I applaud people who are. I do think it matters. I think he's confident and mature and I like that. Listen, I don't dislike Joe.
Starting point is 02:10:21 I just think the Brady Manning stuff is absurd. I do not like those comps either. So tight-in, Austin Hubert chose to sign with the Browns and Free Agency. And he credits seeing Baker Mayfield play in person, and he was a member of the Falcons as a selling point for joining Cleveland. Oh. Playing against fake will make your lives
Starting point is 02:10:40 and seen his arms, seeing his competitive spirit in the way Huckin. What do you make of that? Well, you know, everybody likes what they like. Austin Hooper works. He's not going to beat one-on-one coverage.
Starting point is 02:11:14 Austin Hooper is known as a guy, sits down in his own. I was reading some stuff about him last night about schematically where he fits. I think he's going to be a nice, Nice piece for Cleveland. I'll say it again. If you took a team in the NFL and said,
Starting point is 02:11:31 who has the best two running backs, top two receivers, top two tight ends? Cleveland's number one in the league. Yeah. They're no. No. Becum, Jarvis Landry, Nick Chubb, Kareem Hunt,
Starting point is 02:11:39 Austin Hooper, David & Joku. Nobody in the league has the Noah's Ark of Cleveland. They have got two elite backs, receivers tight ends. I mean, Kansas City's got like an individual star or a couple good receivers. So I don't know. they're going to do in this division, but I'm telling you, Cleveland's offensive weapons are filthy. They are, but here's the thing. We are in unprecedented times, right?
Starting point is 02:12:05 Yeah. Jordan just said it. Nobody's really going to get any action until July. If you look at the division, so when you start evaluating teams, to me, I always look at the division first, right? Because you got to win your division first. You have the Ravens. Ravens are winning the division, right? We already know that. Pittsburgh's going to get Ben back. Now, what kind of shape Ben's going to be in, how he's going to look? I don't know, but I did see what Steelers. the Steelers did last year with Duck Hodges and Mason Rudolph. It's incredible. They were eight and five at one point with Duck Hodges.
Starting point is 02:12:31 Right. So I'm going to assume that they're going to be the second best team in that division. Yep. So you're getting Joe Burrow in Cincinnati. We don't really know what Cincinnati's going to be. So you're the third best team in the division. Like I don't, I don't think that even with those skill players that the Browns are going to be better than the Steelers, because you have to take into consideration when all these guys are going to get on the field together again.
Starting point is 02:12:51 Yeah. No, it's the Rams and the Browns. I'm like, oh, I like, I like so much. about them, I just don't think in their divisions they can win enough games. Right. Like Cleveland, I think it's going to be really talented. Baltimore is the best team this morning in the league personnel wise. And they have a new coach.
Starting point is 02:13:06 Yeah. So Anthony Davis is getting some high praise from Laker great Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. So Kareem did a Twitter Q&A, which is pretty amazing. Like, if you wanted some good content, Karim talking to fans on Twitter, was pretty awesome. And he was asked who in the league he thinks most emulates his style of play. and he said Anthony Davis is the player that I most resemble, but I never shot three pointers like he does. However, all other aspects of his game are similar to mine.
Starting point is 02:13:33 Yeah. Kareem played 10 seasons before the three-point shot was even implemented in the NBA in 1979. He's only taken 18 three-pointers in his 20-year career. Isn't that crazy to like even think that? He was so good. L. Cinder was so good. UCLA was the national champions. Yes.
Starting point is 02:13:50 He came in as a freshman. Freshmen were not allowed to. play. So the freshman team at UCLA with Lou Al Cinder played the national championship team still on campus and destroyed them. That Lou Al Cinder was, I saw a piece of video. I saw one piece of video ever from Lou Al Cinder at the time his freshman year at UCLA. Joy, he is like, he is so long. And at that time, he ran the floor. And it was a fast break and he finished. he looked like a big brother playing with his nine-year-old brothers. He wasn't allowed to, back then, the freshman couldn't play.
Starting point is 02:14:33 People forget he may have been high school and college, the best player ever. Yeah, I mean, we obviously talk about Kareem as an all-time great, but we don't have the conversation about him being the go. But yes, I mean, when you watch him, when you look at his numbers and then consider the era which he played in and the domination that he had in high school and college, It's tremendous. But that's a huge compliment for Anthony Davis, who we don't really put into that category. I mean, obviously, he's a top player in the NBA, but, you know, he hasn't had the accomplishments that Kareem had.
Starting point is 02:15:03 And he's also a great defender. Anthony Davis was in the, you know, defensive player. Oh, Kareem was a great defender in his prime, yeah. Yes. So Deonté, the Deonti Wilder was quick to exercise his right to a rematch after losing to Tyson Fury last month on February 23rd. The fight was scheduled for July 18th, but as expected as everything has been. postponed or canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic. The third fight between Wilder and Fury will be postponed.
Starting point is 02:15:29 Top-ranked chairman, Bob Aram, said that they are looking at a three-month delay, and they hope to reschedule the fight for early October. I actually like this. It was a pretty quick turnaround from what was a very brutal fight for Deonté Wilder. So this is kind of advantage Wilder in this case that it's going to be delayed. Yeah. But I actually think this is a good thing for this fight. It's a little more space before the, you know, the third fight happens.
Starting point is 02:15:59 Obviously more recovery time, February 3rd to July 18th. It's only a few months. Yeah. 23rd, I'm sorry. So, yeah, I mean, this was expected. Everything's being delayed and pushed off. But with boxing, obviously, I'm imagining these guys have gyms in their home. So they're, you know, probably able to stay mostly, you know, probably 80% in shape and keep their normal routine.
Starting point is 02:16:20 with all this going on. But delaying it makes sense. I just think it's an advantage for Wilder because it's more recovery time from that fight. Yeah. Enjoy with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Heard Lye News.
Starting point is 02:16:34 Some thoughts. Nick Wright was on earlier today. His thoughts on the NBA season and what to do with it. The weather can be unpredictable on the rose. Does it mean you can't be safe? Michelin Endurance XD Silicon Wiper Blades. Real World Proven lasts two times longer than other blades.
Starting point is 02:16:49 available only at Walmart. The Herd. Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd, weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific. By the way, Indomac and Sue is going to sign with Tampa, one-year, $8 million deal. How do you know? Look at that. Tommy Brady, getting more help.
Starting point is 02:17:06 Discover matches all the cash back you earn on your credit card into your first year, except that 99% of the places in America that take credit cards. Learn more. Discover.com slash yes, limitations apply. Well, I, I I've said before, I think Tom Brady wins the divorce first year against the Patriots.
Starting point is 02:17:25 And I think the division for New England's getting tougher. And I think Tampa's weapons are really, people don't understand outside of football how good they are. So I thought this morning, let's just look at the two schedules. The schedules are not out yet, but everybody, I already know who everybody plays. You just don't know when they play them. You know where they play, Homer away. So let's look at New England's schedule. It is ranked as the hardest schedule in the NFL for the first time in recent memory.
Starting point is 02:17:55 It's the hardest schedule. So I think the Patriots beat the bad teams at home, Dolphins, Jets, Raiders, and Cardinals with Jared Stidham. All four of those bottom half offenses, New England's going to have an elite defense. So they're going to beat the bad teams at home. I think they lose to Buffalo, Denver, San Francisco, and Baltimore at home. Buffalo made the playoffs and lost to the Patriots by one possession both times. Denver's my most improved team in the NFL. Now the Patriots road games.
Starting point is 02:18:24 I'll say they beat the dolphins on the road, the jets. I'll throw in the chargers because they're figuring out the quarterback position. The five road games, I think they lose. Bill's, Chiefs, Rams, Seahawks, Texans, all won nine or more games last year. I think three of those, five, are better. That's seven and nine for the Patriots. Let's go to Brady the Bucks. 16th easiest schedule.
Starting point is 02:18:52 Brady wins home games against Atlanta, Carolina, both L.A. teams in Green Bay. Green Bay, Aaron Rogers is sub-500 in his career on the road. He's not winning at Tampa, especially if it's early in that heat against Brady and those weapons. They lose it home to the Viking Saints and the Chiefs. Those teams were 20 and 4 on the road last year. Bucks have a much more manageable road
Starting point is 02:19:18 schedule than New England. I think the Bucks win at Carolina, at Chicago, at Detroit, at Vegas, and at the Giants. I think they lose on the road at Atlanta, at New Orleans, at Denver. Brady's always struggled at Denver. What's Tampa's record? 10 and 6. 7 and 9 and 10 and 6. That's kind of what I think you're looking at. Now, again, I'm not going to be right, but if you start looking at Gaskowski, their kicker gone. Gronk now gone for second year. Brady gone. They don't have an elite in a league that is now very high profile skill league. They don't have a Julian Edelman's their guy. And they don't have any ability to draft wide receivers well.
Starting point is 02:19:59 And the free agent period, they didn't land any of them. So I think you're looking at an New England team that plays good defense and plays close and is well coached, but just gets outscored, 27, 23 a lot. And I think if you look at Tampa, they got their tough games at home. They got, they get Green Bay at home. Go look at Tampa's schedule. It's out there right now. We don't know when they play the teams, but we know where they play them and who they play.
Starting point is 02:20:27 They get a lot of toughies at home. New England does not. Good stuff. Today's health concerns, more important than ever to take care of your body. M Drive Elite helps your immunity. Refind your prime with M Drive. So we talked about to start the show today. I do believe that if you have a great ending to a movie, we mostly think it's a good.
Starting point is 02:20:51 great movie. Usual Suspects is the movie I use, which I think was fine with a great ending, and most people think great movie. It's not really a great movie. It was fine, but it had a great ending. People forget that LeBron James, his first title in Miami, that was a strike-shortened season. Nobody brings that up. Why? Because it was LeBron's first championship. It's a great last 15 minutes to a movie and everybody overlooks the flaws. LeBron, we love D. Wade, we know Pat Riley, we love LeBron. People forget, strike short in season. Nobody talks about that. Nobody holds it against LeBron. Similar to this year, the potential is too great for a LeBron championship in a third uniform. You've got to get this season in. Even if you have to start at late July,
Starting point is 02:21:47 and just go six weeks of intense playoffs. I still contend you've played 65 regular season games. It's established who's good and who's not. The Blazers could complain, whoa, we could have snuck in, maybe, but nobody cares. You're not a championship team. Wizards could complain, you know, we got really good at you're a 750 to 1 championship team. Those are the odds.
Starting point is 02:22:16 You're not winning anything. thing. You're not winning a first round playoff series. So I really think you can push it back a lot and then just the day before Labor Day weekend, just hand it over. I think the summer's wide open. Nick Wright was on earlier today and I just think
Starting point is 02:22:31 when you have the potential for the Yankees this year have stars and are loaded, get the season in. Because if the Yankees win it, nobody's going to care. You only played 110 games. And if LeBron and the Lakers are holding a title,
Starting point is 02:22:47 Nobody's going to care 20 years later. Nobody's going to hold it against LeBron James. We don't hold the Miami championship against him, the first one. And Nick Wright talked about the NBA and getting back to business. You have six regular season games left, and then you have a break-neck playoff. Turns out a team like the Lakers that hasn't been resting, that has actually treated the regular season like it matters, it could play very well into their hands as opposed to a team like your beloved clippers that team that has been saying all year long,
Starting point is 02:23:20 no, no, no, no, no, it's a marathon, not a sprint. Well, all of a sudden, it might be a sprint. And if Clippers, Lakers, conference finals, everyone's been saying we're going to get, I don't know if the Clippers will be there in the conference finals, because I don't know if the Clippers know what their rotation is yet, know how to play together yet. I think that really matters. Yeah, and I really do.
Starting point is 02:23:42 I believe this. when you have a downturn, a crisis, what you deliver is simplicity and basics. And in the NBA, the basics are LeBron and the Lakers. I told the story earlier about Apple was almost bankrupt. Steve Jobs came back and said, I'm going to go back to the basics, got rid of 70% of the products, simplicity is the key, build stuff we know people like.
Starting point is 02:24:04 We know people like LeBron, and we know people watch the Lakers. They have the 11 highest-rated television rating games this year in the NBA, not played on Christmas. All right, good stuff. Thanks to Nick Wright. Emmanuel Sanders was money, the new receiver for the Saints, Chris Broussard, and Jordan Palmer. I'm having fun. Hope Joyce having fun.
Starting point is 02:24:24 Love it. Love it. Back tomorrow on a Thursday in L.A. Thanks for joining us. It's been the hurt. Last night, a blown call changed a game. This morning, the internet lost its mind. And nobody's telling you exactly what happened.
