Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Last night, a blown call changed a game. This morning, the internet lost its mind, and nobody's telling you exactly what happened. That's where Sports Slice comes in. I'm Timbo, and every episode, we're cutting through the noise,
Starting point is 00:00:16 breaking down the biggest moments in sports and giving you the real story behind the headline. And we're going straight to the source, the athletes themselves, their locker room stories, their reactions in the moment, and the stuff nobody gets to hear. Listen to Sports Slice on the Iheart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more, follow Timbo Sliced Life 12 in the TikTok podcast network on TikTok.
Starting point is 00:00:39 Another podcast from some SNL late night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smigel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter.
Starting point is 00:01:02 Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. I'm Michelle McPhee, and I've been unraveling the strangest criminal alliance I've ever reported on. A Mormon polygamist and an Armenian businessman. Multi-million dollar house, Ferraris and Lamborghinis, private jets, a billion dollar fraud. But how long can this alliance last? Tell me what you know. Is somebody coming after me? Listen to Kingdom of Fraud on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:01:39 Life is full of hurdles. So how do you keep going? Starting point is 00:02:31 Here we go. It's Draft Day, Thursday in L.A. This is The Heard. Wherever you may be and however you may be listening. We are, again, live in beautiful Los Angeles, IHeart Radio, Fox Sports Radio, and FS1. We are loaded today. Pete Schrager is going to be joining us in 15 minutes. Jay Glazer, Chris Mannix, David Shaw,
Starting point is 00:02:56 Stanford Coach, will be on the NFL Network tonight. Daniel Jeremiah, former NFL Scout. Packed at AJ Taylor is joining me. on a Thursday. My favorite day of the year, arguably, love today. This is like second Super Bowl for you. It really is. This is something I like. I liked it for years. It's nerdy. And tonight's the ultimate nerd draft. It is the ultimate nerd draft for sure. Yeah, last year we had five quarterbacks. They were fun. There were stars. Lamar and Baker and Sam and two Joshes. And it was tonight. This is like a grit draft. Yes. It's a grinder draft. And I love it.
Starting point is 00:03:25 We have all sorts of great stuff today. So you want to spend the next three hours with us. I appreciate you stopping by. So you get all sorts of rumors. I mean, one thing we know, I know it's easy for you to say, Colin, you don't know more than these guys. But the reality is there was a team that drafted Tim Tebow in the first round, and I told you the day it happened, it's a massive mistake in a waste of a pick. And I was right. A team drafted Johnny Mansell, and I told you, despite what Nick Saban said, he's going to be a complete NFL bust. I'm not always right, but I can see the bombs happening. I can see the whiffs happening in a mile away.
Starting point is 00:03:57 I'm not a big believer in drafting wide receivers in the first round. They're almost always busts. Here's the big rumor today. The Giants, New York Giants, Daniel Jones, Duke quarterback, selected with a number six pick. That's the big rumor from people who cover the Giants and are in the room. That would be an incredible reach. If that's the six pick, that is an incredible reach. So Sam Darnold a year ago, there's not a scout in America that doesn't have Sam Darnold
Starting point is 00:04:25 drafted significantly higher than Daniel Jones at Duke. Darnold's bigger, stronger, more athletic, better arm. Not negotiable. Not arguable. Dave Gettleman came out a couple weeks ago and said, the priority is to select the best players. You can't go for position. You got to get the best guys.
Starting point is 00:04:45 That's why we got Sequin Barclay. We thought he was the best quarterback, the best player, excuse me. That's why we took him over Sam Darnold. We thought he was the best player. Okay, if that's the truth, if that's really what you're doing, you're telling me Daniel Jones is the sixth best college football player. In America, he's not the six-best college football player in the ACC. He's not a top 15 player in the SEC.
Starting point is 00:05:07 He's not a top five player in the Big Ten. Listen, the last two years against ACC teams, the best teams he plays, he was six and ten. That's with an exceptional head coach. He completed 54% of his throws in the ACC. I'm not saying he doesn't have value. but I have been on something for years. If you do not complete 60% minimum of your college throws, you will not make it big in the NFL.
Starting point is 00:05:41 There's one exception, Matt Ryan, and he was like 59%. This young man with a great college coach, with a fluffy out-of-conference schedule, under 60%, 54% last two years. He's a three-year starter. So that means this kid knows the offense, got the same coach, not a lot of chaos.
Starting point is 00:06:06 54% in conference. So if you take him, what you're telling me is, you must think he's better than Sam Darnold. Out of your gourd. By the way, he's not only not better than Sam Darnold. He's not better than Josh Rosen. Not a single scout thinks that. And the Giants have 12 draft picks. They could give up one, the 17th.
Starting point is 00:06:27 and take Josh Rosen. My takeaway in what the Giants should do, number six pick, take a defensive player, number 17, trade it for Josh Rosen. And then you've got 10 more picks because actually the Giants over the last couple of years have upgraded their own line. They've got a good tight end, a couple of decent receivers, star running back. They just need defensive players and a quarterback. So this is the classic, say one thing to another.
Starting point is 00:06:56 This is the big rumor. Now, remember this. I know what you're saying. Colin, you don't know. I told you, Johnny Mansell is not going to work. I told you, Tim Tebow, disaster. Never forget. I'm also the guy that says, don't take wide receivers early.
Starting point is 00:07:13 Go back to the 2015, 16, 2017 draft. I'm like, don't take wide receivers. It's the number one bus position. Draft two years ago. Who's the number one bust? John Ross, wide receiver. called it. Don't draft them first round. Nine pick to Cincinnati. Bust. This has the makings of a, wild reach. A wild reach. And I don't want to hear, well, what do you know? I have basic
Starting point is 00:07:42 theories. I write books on these stupid theories of mine. And when it comes to NFL quarterbacks, and by the way, don't tell me I said Baker's a bust. I told you, Baker's not going to be a bust. Baker Mayfield's not going to be a bust. I told you that. I wouldn't draft him. Undraftable. If I a GM, all that nonsense, crotch grabbing stuff. He's not going to be a bust. He's too accurate. And before you go crazy, oh, look how good he is. He finished third in his own division last year.
Starting point is 00:08:04 Let's settle down. He finished third under 500. Let's not go crazy. All right. Draft tonight, can't wait. Coming up, Peter Schrager. I will give you my five draft predictions for tonight in about five, eight minutes. Okay, let me shift to this.
Starting point is 00:08:20 So it's just kind of fun. Pretty good first round of the NBA playoffs. I mean, Clippers last night. Lou Williams beat the Warriors. So here's what we know about the Warriors. This is not as good a team as two years ago that won a title. It's not as good a team as it was last year. They're very thin.
Starting point is 00:08:40 They only play two guys off the bench, really. Iggy and Looney. They don't play a ton of defense because Draymond Green used to be a defensive stopper. He is no longer a defensive stopper. He's just an overplayed niche player. And there's a real apathy here. When you have Kevin Durant, and I think it's a lot of it's Kevin Durant.
Starting point is 00:08:59 When you have a great player like Kevin Durant, the Warriors sometimes get sloppy and lazy and wait for Kevin Durant to bail them out. I mean, they were clearly looking ahead to the Houston Rockets who just beat the Jazz. In fact, Lou Williams of the Clippers admitted last night that he could sense. He could sense as they were beating the Warriors. Yeah, they're just looking ahead to play in the Rockets. For us, our focus was to come in and extend the series to get another game on our home floor. It's their mistake for looking ahead, you know, and so that's on that's on them.
Starting point is 00:09:32 But when I think of this series, what really jumps out to me is Kevin Durant has done it. As there's a lot of great basketball players in the world. But over the last 20 years, the best basketball player in the world really tends to separate from even the second, third, fourth, fifth, six. Let's take Michael Jordan. When Michael was in his peak, the second best player was Barclay, Drexler, Akeem, excellent players. Not close to Michael. When LeBron was in his prime, let's say four years ago, back four years, it was a really
Starting point is 00:10:13 young Kevin Durant who wasn't fully developed. Steph Curry was small and fun. Derek Rose, tiny, tiny Derek Rose. It really wasn't close for about six or seven years. Kevin Durant is in his prime. Now, he's probably in the back of it in his prime. But Kevin Durant separated from the NBA. He's like Michael and LeBron.
Starting point is 00:10:33 He is significantly better than every other player. Now, I only felt this once LeBron got hurt. So maybe LeBron comes back healthy and closes the gap. I think he's better than LeBron today. It may be inches, not feet if LeBron comes off the injury and gets rolling. But I'm watching Kevin Durant, and I think a huge part of Golden State's apathy is you can just rely on Kevin. You just kind of sort of wait, stand around, and even with Steph and even with Clay, he had 45 last night. Every NBA coach is trying to make the opposition shoot tough twos.
Starting point is 00:11:15 It doesn't exist with Kevin Durant. There are no tough twos. you can't force him into shooting a tough two. They're all 45% shots. When Michael Jordan was the king, the gap between him and Barclay and Drexler and Akeem was huge. The gap between LeBron and his prime. Derek Rose, a young KD. Westbrook was huge.
Starting point is 00:11:38 Who's the second best player on the NBA? James Hardin? Yonis can't shoot threes or ball handle like KD. That's a big old gap. Who is the second best player? James Harden, not as athletic, doesn't have his length, doesn't have his size. I mean, I think Kevin's just separated from the NBA. And I've seen it having multiple times.
Starting point is 00:12:02 You know, I thought Magic and Bird actually in their prime had kind of separated from the league until Michael came in later. But when you got a guy like Kevin Duran on your team, it's really easy to look over and think, we'll get ours later. They've become very dependent on him. And in fact, he is now so versatile. He eliminates the need for Draymond Green, who like two, three years ago was Mr. Versatile for them. Now Kevin does all his stuff just at a significantly higher level.
Starting point is 00:12:34 He's separated. Warriors, I think, close it out in game six. All right, coming up next, I'll give you NFL draft night, my five predictions, overall predictions, for the NFL draft tonight and going forward. Plus Peter Schrager this hour, Jay Glazer, in a couple of hours. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports Radio, FS1 and the IHeard Radio app.

Starting point is 00:14:09 Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so rapidly. up in the chase, that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth.
Starting point is 00:14:30 Are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Kear Gaines, is we have real conversations about. All healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast, Learn the Hardway. Starting point is 00:14:50 Search Learn the Hardway and listen now. Jacob Kingston grew up in an isolated polygamous sect. We were God's chosen kingdom on earth. He felt destined for greatness. So when a swaggering Armenian businessman catapults Jacob into an extraordinary world, he doesn't look back. Ferraris and Lamborghinis, private jets. meeting the president of Turkey. I'm Michelle McPhee,
Starting point is 00:15:16 and this is one of the most shocking criminal conspiracies I've ever come across. When Jacob met Levin, this went to a billion dollar fraud. But with two kings from entirely different worlds, just how long can their empire survive? The largest tax investigation in American history. You need to tell me what you know. Is somebody coming after me?
Starting point is 00:15:39 Jacob told Levan, you're ruining my. life. Listen to Kingdom of Fraud on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Life throws hurdles big and small. The question is, how do you conquer them? On Hurtle with Emily Abadi, we sit down with the most inspiring women in sports and wellness, professional athletes, coaches, and Olympic champions to talk about the challenges that shaped them and the mindset that keeps them going. From the WMBA standout, Kate Martin, and rising hockey star Lela Edwards. If a boy can do it, I don't see why a girl can't. Like, I've never understood that.
Starting point is 00:16:18 Like, it didn't make sense in my brain. It's hard to be in spaces that no one looks like you, but don't ever feel like you don't feel on. Don't let that be the reason you don't do it. An Olympic champs Gabby Thomas and Katie Ladeke. The ability to show a gold medal to someone and have their face light up and smile, that means the world to me.
Starting point is 00:16:35 And that's what motivates me to win more gold medals. At our level, at this scale, like being able to fail in front of the entire world. Like, I can do it. Anything. I can do anything. Because resilience isn't just about winning. It's about showing up, even when it's hard. Listen to Hurtle with Emily Abadi on the IHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Presented by Capital One, founding partner of IHeart Women's Sports.
Starting point is 00:17:03 Great news. Quick and easy way you could save money. Switch to GEICO takes 15 minutes to see if you can say 15% or more on car insurance, Geico.com. NFL draft this tonight. You know, it's funny. Last year was a big ratings, big draft, a bunch of quarterbacks, and, you know, fans will often complain. How come you only talk about the stars? Because this draft has no stars in it, and it'll get a much lower rating tonight. Why? Because it's got a bunch of grinders and a bunch of interior linemen. Fans want to talk about LeBron, Brady, Durant. We know we measure the numbers and the metrics and we see it. Tonight's ratings will probably not be great for the draft. There's no buzz around it because there's no flashy, stars. There's no Baker, Johnny Mansell, Sam Darnold. It's a bunch of grinders outside of Kyler Murray. But for me, if you love football, this is what the draft is all about. Let me make my five predictions for the NFL draft tonight. Number one, I think New England will trade up
Starting point is 00:17:59 multiple times tonight, meaning at least twice. Why? They've got 12 picks. Belichick in recent drafts is looking for specific pieces and he'll do whatever it takes to get those specific pieces. They had three draft picks last year that would have started but got hurt. People are forgetting about those. Left tackle running back in corner. They just don't have many spots available. What they need is for impact players to get a little more athletic on both sides of the football. I think they need a tight end and they'd move up. I think they could use a corner and they'd move up, pass rusher and interior linemen. Of course, they're always seeking value.
Starting point is 00:18:41 They may not move up in the first round, but I think New England will move up multiple times over today, tomorrow, and the weekend. Number two, the Redskins will butcher something. Listen, Daniel Snyder, according to reports, is now taking over the first round. Oh, good Lord. They can't get the quarterback, right?
Starting point is 00:19:02 I have a hard time respecting organizations if you can't figure out the quarterback. You can't get, I mean, they overpaid for a guy I like Alex Smith, and then they overpaid for Case Keenham, and then they drafted RG3, and they've passed on multiple quarterbacks that are better than all three of those guys. This is an organization that is now, to me, on equal footing dysfunction-wise with Cleveland. Hopefully Cleveland's moving in the right direction, but Washington will butcher something and reach for something in the next three days.
Starting point is 00:19:31 Third thing, we are going to love what the Green Bay. Packers do today and tomorrow. Here's why. Because the Packers in the last two years have loaded up in the first three rounds on defensive players. Seven of their eight first picks in the last two tracks have been defensive players. And that was really smart. And they also loaded up this year in free agency, safety, two linebackers. So what does that mean? That means they're going to go offense with one or both of their first round picks this year. Green Bay is going to do some offensive stuff, and everything on paper looks good with Aaron Rogers. So if they draft the receiver, they draft the tight end like Noah Fant in Iowa, we're all going to go crazy.
Starting point is 00:20:15 So mark my words, tomorrow we're going to love their pick. Over the weekend, we're going to love what Green Bay is doing because it looks like they're going to lean offense and getting Aaron Rogers some nice young toys, and that just looks great on paper. Number four, somebody's going to reach for Daniel Jones. not saying he's not draftable, you know, mid-second round. But what I find remarkable, that the quarterback with the weakest arm of the top six were nitpicking Kyler Murray. We nitpick Josh Rosen. We nitpick Sam Darnold. We nitpicked Lamar Jackson. We nitpick Duane Haskins. Isn't anybody just saying he didn't have a very good arm? You don't even need to nitpick. Fifty-four percent completion rate
Starting point is 00:21:04 last two years with a great coach in the ACC. I'm not saying he doesn't have value. Again, I can see New England taking him in the second round and saying, we're going to sit on him for two years. I get it. They do that a lot. I can see an organization sitting on him for two years, but I have a feeling somebody's going to reach for him.
Starting point is 00:21:26 We're nitpicking all these quarterbacks except Daniel Jones, who I think in the last two years argument, weakest, I mean, weaker arm than everybody, Josh Allen, Josh Rosen, Sam Darnold, Baker Mayfield, Dwayne Haskins, Kyler Murray. It's got the weakest arm all those guys. And number five, the Raiders, and this has been their goal, are going to get talked about a lot tonight. As I've predicted and told you, they're not selling tickets in Oakland.
Starting point is 00:21:55 It's a lame duck year, and the Golden Knights hockey team has gobbled up a lot of the season ticket buyers. That's a lot of money in Vegas. They're trying to sell tickets. you can absolutely, we've seen this in the NBA, we've seen it in the NFL. Do you have a big opening draft night? You can sell season tickets. You can sell 6,000 season tickets.
Starting point is 00:22:13 You draft Zion, you're going to sell 7,000 in Orlando or somewhere. So there are, I think the Raiders are, they want to win tonight. They want to get talked about tonight. They got tickets to sell. This has always been a lower revenue team in the last decade. They don't do very well on game day revenue at all. It's like half of the Giants, half of the Eagles. half of the Steelers, half of the Patriots.
Starting point is 00:22:36 They're not a good game day revenue team. They tarp off the upper deck. They got tickets to sell. So they want to make a huge, massive splash tonight, and I think they will. They'll be rumors stuff, stuff being leaked. They'll get talked about all night long. Those are my five draft predictions. Peter Schrager around the corner.
Starting point is 00:22:56 Here's Joy Taylor with the news. No, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. So the Clippers. Put an upset win last night. Game 5 against the Warriors. Beating the champs at home, 129, 121.
Starting point is 00:23:11 Another Oracle loss. Very strange, right? They lose a lot at home. Durant and Curry both had strong performances, but they did not close out the series. And after the game, Steve Kerr was asked about his team's identity. Here was his response. That's interesting. What's the identity of our club?
Starting point is 00:23:29 Back-to-back champions were really good. I mean, we're hanging banners. You know, what's our identity? We play fast. We play defense. I don't know. Maybe we should do an instructional video later in the 17. By the way, I would say defensively they pick their spots.
Starting point is 00:23:53 Does everybody realize the clippers are averaging almost 117 points? Yeah, defense is probably the thing I would throw out. I think they have great length. And there are times they, they have. ratchet it up, but I told you this year, I think defense is a hobby, not an occupation. They do it when they feel like it. For the Warriors. Yes. Yes. Now, look, their, their bench was, the Clippers bench was incredible last night. It's scored 59 points. Lou Williams, obviously, Walking Bucket at 33, and Montrez-Harrel had 26, or 24 in Gallenary at 26.
Starting point is 00:24:21 So all of their, everyone is participating when it comes to the Clippers. And look, I think that this is a, this is a little bit of a big deal. Like, they, it's the first round. Not that they should be sweeping or that we're looking for a sweep, but if you're looking what's happening in the Eastern Conference and looking what's happened with the Warriors, Steve Kerr is right. There's no need to panic. They've been in Game 7 series before,
Starting point is 00:24:46 and everyone kind of has the feeling they're going to close out next game. But, I mean, is there any? Here's a great example. They're actually, I trust them more on the road than at home. I think at home, first of all, there's so many tech millionaires there. It's a very quiet crowd. It used to be loud at Oracle when you had a more regular fan base. Now they're all millionaires, tech guys.
Starting point is 00:25:06 Well, that's going to get better when they move to the new arena. Yeah, no, it's going to become an incredibly wealthy and quiet arena. I don't, I think they kind of, those home games, they mail it in a lot. They need great nights from people to escape with wins at home. On the road, I feel like there's almost a sense of like warrior urgency. We got to step up and play well early. But last night, Duran had 45 last night. And they didn't have any turnovers.
Starting point is 00:25:31 It's not like Golden State played terrible. They had eight turnovers. That's it. They didn't give the game away. I mean, I think that the question was more should have probably, well, I don't know what the question, how it was asked, but I think it was meant to say, what is your identity right now this year? I understand Steve Kerr being a little defensive, like, but you did just lose to the clippers
Starting point is 00:25:49 at home. Like, this is, it's worth discussing. Yeah. Time to see who's going places. Sponsored by Toyota. Let's go places. Dwayne Haskins is one of the top quarterbacks in this draft tonight. And there's only a few hours to go before the first.
Starting point is 00:26:01 round begins, and he is still moving up on one team's draft board, according to Ian Rappaport. The Raiders are considering taking Haskins with a fourth overall pick after his very impressive workout for the team. Again, of the two or three things I like about the Raiders, one of them is their current quarterback. This is not a concern for the Raiders. Derek Carr is more than good enough to win you playoff games. And he just signed a five-year $125 million extension in 2007.
Starting point is 00:26:31 See, again, this, why is this leaking? Why is this? This is leaking to win the draft and sell tickets. Why would this story be out? I mean, I mean, so you don't want them to take assets. No, they got a million needs on the deep. I mean, Gurdon is the quarterback whisper. What if he feels like he can't make it happen with Carr?
Starting point is 00:26:53 You just sign him to a fat contract. If you are a quarterback coach like Gruden is, and you watch Derek Carr and you don't think you can win games with him, then what about like the nine-game winning streak? What about the couple years ago when he won eight games in the last possession? What happened then? Has he gotten worse? I'm with you, Ankar.
Starting point is 00:27:11 That is not the space of need for them. I don't really get it. But I also feel like we've been discussing how the Raiders are trying to make a splash. Joy, three straight days. They're promising a big surprise. Three straight days, Joy. A story with the Raiders has leaked. Why are they leaking it?
Starting point is 00:27:27 They want to sell tickets. That's part of the deal. finally it's been quite a few weeks for the Lakers organization following Magic Johnson's surprise resignation and the departure of Luke Walton
Starting point is 00:27:38 in a report surfaced this week that the Lakers the way the Lakers have handled all these changes has caused a rift with LeBron James and LeBron set the record straight
Starting point is 00:27:47 with a video on Instagram yesterday. It's not true at all. I'm actually at the Lakers facility right now. Actually, that's the LeBron I like. That's the funny LeBron.
Starting point is 00:28:02 Yes. He is being funny, although I don't know how accurate that video is. You've got to be a little concerned with the direction and overall. Yeah, you know what I don't like? Energy around the Lakers right now. He's the only guy in the leg of Roselty. That was a little odd to me. Yeah, where's Kyle Kozman-Lanzo a ball?
Starting point is 00:28:22 You know, he likes his Zen quiet workouts. I don't know. I don't think that LeBron is completely comfortable despite the funny Instagram video with everything that's going on. I would actually be more concerned if he wasn't fully comfortable. Now, a rift between the Lakers organization in him. I don't know if you want to go that far, because I'm sure Jeannie is in constant communication. And Blink goes well with LeBron,
Starting point is 00:28:41 so I don't think they're keeping him out of the loop as far as what their plan is. And who knows? Maybe they do have a plan. They're just waiting for the rest of the playoffs to sort themselves out and see it becomes available. Joy with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by.
Starting point is 00:28:55 The Hurd-Ly News. Okay, it's one of my favorite nights of the year. I'm kind of a dork. I don't have a problem saying that. I love the architecture of it. coming up, by the way, in 15 minutes. I'll tell you what not to do, what position to run for the hills from.
Starting point is 00:29:10 But first, let's go live to one of my favorite cities in the country. Nashville, Tennessee, home of the draft tonight via the Coward Global Satellite Network, Peter Schrager. All right, let's start with the number one pick. There's a lot of Rosen stuff out there. I think you agree with me. We both like Josh Rosen. We think he's a very good player.
Starting point is 00:29:28 Kyler Murray, Rosen. What is the very latest you project or hear about Rosen and Murray. Yeah, you're going to hear a lot about Quinn Williams and Nick Bosa leading up to the number one pick, Colin, but I'll tell you, this has been Kyler Murray, number one to the Cardinals, since the day they interviewed Cliff Kingsbury.
Starting point is 00:29:45 Cliff Kingsbury got on a private jet with Michael Bidwell back in January, and they knew they had the number one overall pick, and as much as the Rosen Camp is going to say, well, we were in a fight for this thing, Kyler wouldn't have been playing, I don't think football professionally, if it wasn't for the Cardinals having the number one pick. Kingsbury recruited Kyler Murray.
Starting point is 00:30:02 seven years ago out of high school to come play at Texas Tech. He went to Texas A&M. He's been chasing him ever since. Every indication I have, and I will trust what I know, not what I'm hearing on Twitter and what everyone else around the league is saying, because there is a lot of people blowing up my phone saying, get off that corner. I'm telling you it's Boso, or I'm telling you it's Williams. I will tell you what I know, Colin, and I believe that Kyler Muriel be the first overall selection to the Arizona Cardinals.
Starting point is 00:30:27 Giants have 12 draft picks. They could certainly move one for Rosen. I would argue, go get defense six, give up your 17 pick and get Rosen, and then you got 10 to fix some problems. What do you hear with Rosen? Yeah, the Rosen thing is fascinating. First of all, Colin, if the Giants go six and have a defensive player that they select, 17 becomes one of the most interesting spots in the draft. The Redskins have the 15th pick.
Starting point is 00:30:53 There's a lot of talk. The Redskins want a quarterback. So if you take two teams in the NFC East, there are two arch rivals, Redskins' Giants, jockeying to see who's going to take a quarterback, where and when they're going to do it. Then you throw the Rosen thing in the mix. Look, if the Giants offered the 17th overall pick, a first round pick for Josh Rosen, I think that trade would be done immediately by the Arizona Cardinals. The fear is, or the talk around the league is, there are no first round picks being offered for Josh Rosen. And then I'll double down. There might not be
Starting point is 00:31:20 second round picks being offered for Josh Rosen. So then you get into the, do we trade him 50 cents on the dollar for a third round pick? Is Josh Rosen a guy that we gave our first, third and fifth round pick to move up to and already paid $17 million. Really, are we only going to get a third round pick in exchange for him? I find the Rosen factor almost more interesting than the Dwayne Haskins, Daniel Jones, Drew Locke factor. You have to almost consider Josh Rosen as another quarterback in this draft class because he is this other being that is living in the ether.
Starting point is 00:31:53 And everyone knows that he might be available for cheap based on what he can do on the field. My guess with Haskins, who I like, I consider him a good solid B, B, plus. prospect. I don't think he's Darnold. I don't think he's Carson Wentz or a luck. But I think he's a solid kid that you sit down for a couple years then play him. I'm guessing Cincinnati at 11. I think Zach Taylor's going to get tired of Andy Dalton, who just came off a torn thumb ligament injury. What's your guess on Haskins? Haskins is fascinating because some will say that he might go as high as six to the New York Giants. I could see a slide happening though. Cincinnati, I've got some guys there. I really don't think quarterback is the move. I think they might get one in the second or the
Starting point is 00:32:34 third. They believe in Andy Dolan and Zach comes from L.A. and almost wants to support him like Sean McVeigh supported golf when there are a lot of doubters there. So if you have a top tackle, I think Cincinnati goes there. Where does Haskins go? He might be there at 13 for the Dolphins. Are they going to take them? I'm told they're not going quarterback. He might be there 10 for the Broncos. I'm told Elway and company are not going quarterback. Washington and New York are fascinating because they are expected to go quarterback, 15 or 17. So if they're going to have to move up to get which quarterback, and then Colin, you throw in the mix,
Starting point is 00:33:07 is it Haskins or is it Daniel Jones, who you mentioned in the last segment. Seems like everyone's treating Daniel Jones like this Teflon, like, can't miss prospect. There's a lot not to like about Daniel Jones. Yet the NFL circles are giving him the benefit of the doubt and saying, well, Peyton Manning likes him, so he must be good. And that's what really everyone's going off of right now.
Starting point is 00:33:24 Yeah, yeah, I think we're nitpicking everybody except Daniel Jones, who I think has really a average to slightly below average NFL arm. Okay, Raiders. I'll tell you my theory on this, Pete. I know you're working mornings too, so you don't get to hear me. But my theory is, Raiders got to sell tickets. They're leaking stuff out there to just win the night. And by the way, we know historically you can sell season tickets if you make a lot of noise over this weekend.
Starting point is 00:33:49 They talked about a big surprise. What could it possibly be? Yeah, the same reports you're hearing are big surprise. and then today he's, Dwayne Haskins is suddenly up their board, but you're not hearing Dwayne Haskins is being selected by the Raiders. There seems to be all this buzz around them. Colin, I can't imagine, knowing what I know, that the Raiders aren't going to sit there at four
Starting point is 00:34:09 and take either Ed Oliver or Quinn and Williams if they're sitting there. And then they're going to be at 24 and 27. The name I keep hearing with the Raiders, and this might not sell tickets, is Alabama running back Josh Jacobs. The word is that the coaching staff really likes him. Marshawn Lynch isn't coming back. So maybe they move up to get him,
Starting point is 00:34:25 but if you're looking for some huge splash, Eric Carr trade or even a Kyler Murray move up. I just don't see it. Gruden and company, they have a really good offseason so far with Antonio Brown and Trent Brown coming in. I think they might stay pat and go defensive player of four, a tight end or running back at 24, and then another player best available at 27. It won't win the night, and it certainly might not sell a bunch of tickets, but it might
Starting point is 00:34:49 win football games come September. As Bill Belichick gets older and Brady gets older, it does feel like they are looking for New England's specific pieces. They have a ton of draft capital tonight, 12 picks. They also had three very good picks last year that got hurt who will vie for starting spots. They don't have 12 starting spots available. I'm not sure if they have 12 roster spots available.
Starting point is 00:35:11 I think they may cobble a couple together and go after, they did last year. They had specific wants. They put some picks together. I'm kind of predicting they're going to move up once or twice over the weekend. What do you suspect they do with all this draft capital? They're so fascinating because as much as we say, oh, here we go again with the people doubting the Patriots. Around the league, people are like, the Patriots are vulnerable. They lost Grunk, who was the best tight end in the sport.
Starting point is 00:35:37 They didn't bring back Chris Hogan. They didn't get Cole Beasley or Adam Humphreys. If you look at the Patriots offense right now, it's Edelman, it's Brady, it's those great running backs. That's a lot of question marks beside that. So people think they might be making a move for a playmaker here. There are a lot of good late first, early second round, wide receiver talents. but if you want to talk about packaging picks and making a big move here,
Starting point is 00:35:58 there are two tight ends out of Iowa. And if you know Belichick, he loves Kirk Ferrence, he loves that Iowa connection. And there's a kid, T.J. Hawkinson, out of Iowa and a kid, Noah Fent, out of Iowa, the top two tight ends by a landslide. If they were to package some picks, everyone's going to say, oh, they're getting Brady's successor.
Starting point is 00:36:15 They're going to take a quarterback. No, no, no, no, no. I'm told it would be for one of those two tight ends. But just like last year when they had 17 and 31, and everyone thought they were going to make some big splash, they might just sit at 32 and take the best player available and enjoy days two and three because that's where they do their most damage. Finally, my guys tell me that Quinn and Williams at Alabama,
Starting point is 00:36:33 although not a perfect player, is as good as any player in the draft. If I said there was a first round guy with no chance to bust, which almost outside of a John Elway, Andrew Luck in our lifetimes, there's very few of those. What are your sources saying the best player in this draft tonight? All right. So last year, the two guys were Sequin Barkley. Everyone said, that's a no-brainer.
Starting point is 00:36:56 And Quentin Nelson, who the Colts took and was an all-pro as a rookie. This year, the guy everyone says is named Jonah Williams. He's the left tackle out of Alabama. He might not go top eight. But this kid started three years for Nick Sabin, gave up three sacks over those three years. He's a little short, doesn't have the body necessarily, but he could play tackle, he could play guard, and he is as good and as mentally tough a kid as there is. So he might not be the first tackle off the board.
Starting point is 00:37:20 He might be the third tackle off the board. board. But if you want to talk about a 10-year starter in the league who's going to come ready to play right now, Jonah Williams, Alabama Crimson Tide, he's going to make some fan base really happy over the next few years. All right. His name is Peter Schreger. NFL Network provides live coverage of the draft starting at 8 Eastern tonight. I'll be absolutely glued. Shreg is great seeing you both of our favorite weekend maybe of the year. Good talk. Can I quickly make one suggestion to everybody? Put the phones away tonight. Don't go on Twitter because it is the greatest reality show
Starting point is 00:37:53 and don't let Twitter spoil it for you. Just enjoy the draft, watch it, and then tomorrow let's go nuts with it. Good stuff. Thanks, Shregs. Good stuff. We have David Shaw, Daniel Jeremiah, former NFL Scout.
Starting point is 00:38:06 God, I could just eat this stuff up. That is true, though. Because the tweets come out fast, like, faster than what's on TV. Jay Glazer. It ruins it for you. Jay Glazer beats everybody. Glazer's got all the picks before they happen.
Starting point is 00:38:20 It's just fun. There's so many interesting teams. There's four or five teams I'm really interested with. The Jets, obviously, San Francisco, because I think Jets in San Francisco are teams about ready to pop. Every year I pick two teams that I think will double their wins. The two I'm picking this year are San Francisco and the Jets to double their win total. So I can't wait to see because they're going to go grab a guy that's an impact guy. You get a Bosa, he's an impact guy.
Starting point is 00:38:47 You get a Quinn and Williams. He's an impact guy. Coming up next, there's going to be bust tonight. And I think it's fairly easy to pick the busts. I don't think it's easy to pick the guaranteed sleepers or superstars. But I'll tell you something to avoid tonight. And if your team drafts this, I mean, you should feel terrible. You should not sleep.
Starting point is 00:39:14 It should be a restless night. That is coming up. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd. weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific. Last night, a blown call changed a game. This morning, the internet lost its mind. Highlights are trending. Opinions are flying.

It's hard to be in spaces that no one looks like you, but don't ever feel like you don't feel on. Don't let that be the reason you don't do it.
Starting point is 00:42:46 An Olympic champs Gabby Thomas and Katie Ledecki. The ability to show a gold medal to someone and have their face light up and smile, that means the world to me. And that's what motivates me to win more gold medals. At our level, at this scale, like being able to fail in front of the entire world. Like, I can do anything. I can do anything. Because resilience isn't just about winning.
Starting point is 00:43:10 It's about showing up, even when it's hard. Listen to Hurtle with Emily Abadi on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts for wherever you get your podcasts. Presented by Capital One, founding partner of I Heart Women's Sports. Welcome back, good to have you in NFL draft tonight, then tomorrow, then Saturday, and I'll be watching all of it in front of a television. Great to have you in. Do have to watch the Avengers movie, too, with my son.
Starting point is 00:43:32 That's a biggie. Oh, I can't wait. Yeah, that's a biggie. So I'm Daniel Jeremiah as a former NFL scout. He'll join us next hour. I was looking over his first round picks. I do not see a lot of bust in his first top 10. It's got a quarterback, an edge, a defensive tackle.
Starting point is 00:43:45 tackle, defensive tackle, linebacker, tight end, guard, linebacker. One of the reasons I don't see any big busts is because he doesn't have any receivers in the top 10 and only one in the first round. With very few exceptions, I would always pass on wide receivers in the first round. Calvin Johnson was the rare wide receiver that I would have even taken him number one. By and large, I don't think wide receivers win games in December, January, and February. I don't think you build football teams from the sidelines in.
Starting point is 00:44:18 You build it for the center out. In fact, I think the biggest potential first round bus this year, I always call one is DK. Metcalf, a wide receiver from Old Miss. He's a classic. He's off to your left here in this picture. He's like the most impressive physical specimen, maybe on the planet Earth. Big body, Combine Warrior.
Starting point is 00:44:37 I think he's got bust written all over him. Not a bad kid. I just see a guy that, again, looks like. like Superman, and I've seen this act before. They just look great with a shirt off, and then they can't create enough separation, and they don't have the skills needed catching radius that I'm looking for to be great. And just let me give you an example of why I would not, and this is nothing against DK. It's a bigger topic.
Starting point is 00:45:02 I don't believe in taking wide receivers first round. Let me take you to the last three drafts. Let's go to the 2015 draft. There was a handful of busts. One of them, seventh pick Kevin White receiver. Chicago Bears, bust. Philip Dorset receiver, bust. Devonte Parker, Nelson Aguilar, 14th, 20th pick.
Starting point is 00:45:23 Not a bust but disappointing. Amari Cooper is the only guy that's been worth the money and even his initial team bailed on him. Let's go to the 2016 draft. Corey Coleman, bailer to the Browns, bust. Will Fuller, Notre Dame to Houston. He's good when he's healthy. He's never healthy. Josh Doxon.
Starting point is 00:45:42 TCU to the Reddxon. Skins, Bost, Laquan Treadmill, Mississippi to the Vikings, 23rd pick first round. Is either a fourth best wide receiver? Let's go to the 2017 draft. Corey Davis, fifth pick. He's not a fifth pick. Now, I do like his talent a lot. He's got health issues trying to stay healthy.
Starting point is 00:45:59 If he's healthy, I think he's really, really potentially good, but he can't stay healthy. The seventh pick was Mike Williams Clemson. Didn't play his rookie year he was hurt. Again, like Corey Davis, when he's healthy, he's a specimen. John Ross, total bust. Number nine pick Cincinnati. I just don't believe in wide receivers. Not in the first round.
Starting point is 00:46:19 There's a ton of them in this draft. I think they're all second, third, and fourth round guys. There are people I would move up for. I would move up for a great tackle. I would move up for a great interior rusher. I'd even move up for an edge rusher, a corner, a quarterback. Wide receiver I don't get. And so when I'm looking over these mock drafts,
Starting point is 00:46:39 I don't think we're going to have a high bust rate this year, especially in the top 10. I think it's a lot of grinders. I think it's a lot of interior linemen. I think it's a lot of tackling machines at linebacker. I don't see a lot of busts. And so that's one of the things. I don't think it'll be a big bust draft. There's not a lot of flashy players tonight.
Starting point is 00:47:00 It's the least flashy draft ever. It's a lot of really solid linebackers and offensive guards and linebackers. and linebackers that tackle well. And, I mean, I could make the argument that Kyler Murray, because they're going to ask a lot of them early and it's a really tough position of play, there's a little bus there. I mean, they don't have a good old line in Arizona. They're going to ask him to start immediately.
Starting point is 00:47:26 That's a really good division with really good defensive players and very good coaches, Wade Phillips defensively, Pete Carroll, Shanahan. That, you know, Kyler Murray is going to have, even if he succeeds, it's going to be bumpy. That's a position where Baker Mayfield was better than most thought, and he had some real bumps. He had three pick games and finished below 500. So Kyler Murray, to me, he's a dynamic, exotic, exciting player.
Starting point is 00:47:52 There's explosions everywhere, fireworks. He's got a little bus potential. Outside of that, I don't see it in the top 10. I don't think there's a lot of flash. I think it's a grinder draft. I think it's an overachiever draft. I do think one of the better players who's going to drop tonight's Rashon Gary. He has a potential to drop.
Starting point is 00:48:08 He's a Michigan player, edge rusher. He's had shoulder issues. There's a chance people get afraid of that and drop him. I think he's going to be a really good player. Again, if he stays healthy, I think he's going to be a really exceptional NFL player. Very excited for tonight. Coming up next hour, David Shaw and Daniel Jeremiah, David Shaw, the coach at Stanford. Daniel's a former NFL scout.
Starting point is 00:48:29 Chris Mannix, Jay Glazer. And I'm just giddy for tonight. Just cannot get over it. I will say this again. and I want to get all my opinions out, and so you can bash me tomorrow if I'm wrong. I'll say it again. I don't think Josh Rosen's going to be a superstar in this league.
Starting point is 00:48:45 But, man, if you've got 12 draft picks, 12, the New York Giants, I mean, outside of maybe center, right tackle, you know, they have most of their starters offensively. You know, they could use a right tackle. They could use a center. their star running back. They have their tight end. They have several receivers they like. They've got Eli. I think they need a quarterback. And I don't think, I don't think anybody in this draft rates significantly higher than Josh Rosen. And by the way, the Giants may very well want
Starting point is 00:49:23 Josh Rosen. They just don't want to give a one-up. Arizona does not want to be humiliated. The Giants may very well want Rosen, but they're not going to give you a first round pick. And since Arizona moved up to get him, they're not giving him away in the second or third round because it would look really bad for Steve Kime, their general manager. So, let's not blame all the giants. They may like him. They just don't like him that much. Hour two is coming up. David Shaw, Daniel, Jeremiah in L.A., it's the herd. One more herd? They'll have like the entire team.

I told you my dream job once I get fired here is to be like an assistant to the assistant vice president of an NFL team in charge of the draft. I can't even imagine you in a draft room. Oh, I was with the Chargers last year. Do you do well under high pressure situations? Oh, I dominated.
Starting point is 00:55:07 Really? Yeah, they got concerned because I got on my phone and they were like, who are you calling, Andy Reed? And I'm like, no, Andy's my friend. I'm not calling anybody. I'm just checking out. I'm on Twitter with a draft. I was so excited.
Starting point is 00:55:17 They didn't trust you? No, they came over and they were like, who are you on the phone with? We know who you like in this league. And I'm like, I like you. They got kind of freaked out. So David Sean in a couple of minutes. So I just want to show you how crazy this draft is that I was reading this morning some analytic chart on the success rate of draft picks.
Starting point is 00:55:34 It's frightening. So this is first round. The success rate on analytics is a guy successful. Top five players, 77%. By the 6 through the 10th player, it's down to 50%. The bottom of the first round, it's under 50%. It's hard. And I'll give you an example.
Starting point is 00:55:53 I'm going to give you four players that I like a lot. And I don't think they don't feel like bust to me. but even they have major flaws in their game. So I'm going to give you four guys I like. Quinn and Williams, Alabama. I think he's a terrific football player. This, according to scouts, these are his weaknesses, which scouts agree with. His physical traits don't stand out.
Starting point is 00:56:18 He needs to put on weight. He lacks desired muscle mass to withstand pressure from double teams. Overall lack of thickness in chest and broadness through shoulders. lack of length makes controlling NFL guards difficult. They're largely describing what would be known as a physically limited player who's an overachiever. And I think he's as good as anybody in the draft. And I don't think those are wrong. You can double him.
Starting point is 00:56:43 He's not Aaron Donald. He's not that strong. You can double him and push him out. One-on-one, he is a load to block. Ask LSU. Okay, another player. And I like him and listen to all those weaknesses. Here's another guy I like.
Starting point is 00:56:55 I like Nick Bosa. but here's what scouts say are his weaknesses. He's not as naturally fluid as his brother Joey was. He's rigid. It looks like his counter-rush moves are based on effort over skill. Disappointing tackle production. Can bend but doesn't really play with leveraged anchor versus kickouts and downblocks. What they're telling you is he's a lesser version of his brother.
Starting point is 00:57:24 He's a little stiff, which coaches hate for edge rushers, and he's not nearly as good as his brother. He's Eli to Peyton, and that's a player I like. Here's another player that I like a lot. He's the tight end from Iowa. He has virtually no bust potential, in my opinion, T.J. Hawkinson for Iowa. I think he's just, I just think you can't go wrong with this kid, especially there's a lot of 12 personnel in the NFL. That's two tight end sets. He'll come in and start for anybody, including the Patriots.
Starting point is 00:57:53 But here's what they say. narrow, an athletic frame that needs muscle mass. He tends to overstep when blocking could struggle to maintain reasonable anchor in a pass protection, meaning he could get pushed around a lot. And that's a guy, I think, is virtually busproof. Okay? Here's another guy I like. Devin White, who's just a tackling machine.
Starting point is 00:58:23 The last couple years, he's been just unbelievable. So here's what they say about Devin White. Instincts are average. Gets fooled on key fakes. Too many false steps. Running backs consistently finish under his pads. Don't like that. Needs a lot of work and technique.
Starting point is 00:58:41 Misses tackle when his footwork and scrape balance get too loose. What they're telling you is, he doesn't really have a feel for the game. But man, he is super athletic and muscular, but he doesn't have a great feel. for the game. So the four guys I like in the draft, one of them sounds like an overachiever. One's not as good as his brother. One's going to get pushed around and the other one has terrible
Starting point is 00:59:03 instincts. And those are four guys I love. Those are my guys that I don't think can bust. I, out of those critiques, the ones that make me worry the least are the things that you can develop. Like if you're not particularly strong, these guys
Starting point is 00:59:19 are still young. So they're going to get big man strength over the next few. years. They're going to be in NFL locker rooms with NFL strength and conditioning coaches. So that is something that can develop and can grow. I hope you're right. The Nick Bosa thing is like, you know, he's good, but you know, he's not nearly as fluid as athletic as his brother. And it's like, oh, well, that doesn't make me feel good about a number two pick. So let's go to my friend, Stanford head football coach, the Bay Area, David Chavez, the Coward Global Satellite Network in Nashville, one of the great music and food cities in America. All right, coach, I'm reading those draft things
Starting point is 00:59:52 and it's freaking me out. You know, you have to do, when you get high school players, you have to project how they'll develop at Stanford. Some kids, they just, you don't even have to convince them. They want to be in the wait room all day and they want to learn. Other kids, maybe not as much. When you look at NFL players, can you spot a guy that you think, uh, that scares me?
Starting point is 01:00:16 Can you spot that? Absolutely. And what you're doing, Colin? You're just talking through exactly what happens with every single player that has ever been drafted, even the guys that you like, sometimes you do more digging on the things that they don't do. Well, you want to know the downside of every single guy that you draft. And as I was listening to you go through that whole list, and I'm chuckling because if you go through the list of the Pro Bowl, you can go through all those guys, their pre-draft things. A lot of those
Starting point is 01:00:42 things were true, things that they didn't do well. But a lot of times, it doesn't take away from what they do do well, what they are great at, and the reason why they're ranked that high. Every single player has downsides. I remember when people were bashing, Peyton and Manning. I remember when people We're bashing Andrew Luck. Remember what people were talking about, Dak Prescott, how he's never going to be able to play at this level. So I think there are great players that are nobody's perfect. They're all going to have downsides.
Starting point is 01:01:05 And as a team, as a scout, as a GM, as a coach, you want to know what those things are. And then evaluate that in comparison to what their ceiling is. And that's how you decide who you really want to pick. Dwayne Haskins is a kid I like. I don't think he's quite ready. I don't think, listen, here's what I like about him. He's a big, strong kid.
Starting point is 01:01:22 He appears coachable. Urban Meyer told me privately and on the air that he was very good audibly the right protections very coachable when you break Drew Breeze's records in the Big Ten you're officially a player. I like him. I think we're nitpicking him to death. What do you see with him like and concerns?
Starting point is 01:01:43 What I really like is what they've been able to do on offense there. It's a great combination of kind of the Urban Meyer spread with the Ryan Day kind of new things. And you see a variety of plays. You see him go in the pocket and go from a. progression read from number one to number two to number three. You see him do some of the spread principles. You see him get the ball out of his hands quickly.
Starting point is 01:02:00 But you said it. What you really see, though, you see a big, strong man that can stand in the pocket, stand in an NFL pocket with guys in his face and throw strikes 15, 20, 30 yards down the field. That's what's won in this NFL for a long time. It looks like this guy can do it. Kyler Murray, now the size is interesting because people have comped in with Russell Wilson.
Starting point is 01:02:20 But Russell Wilson, I've seen the video at Wisconsin, played at 220. Kyler looks like he plays at 188. I know everybody's telling me he's 5'10, but coach, when I watch him, he doesn't look like Russell Wilson. He doesn't feel that thick to me. Would you be concerned about that? I think there's a legitimate concern to that
Starting point is 01:02:41 when you've seen a lot of quote-unquote fast-scambling quarterbacks that don't have great thickness and great size that you eventually get caught and eventually get hurt. And can they play dinged up a little bit and not be as fast and still beat you from the pocket? When I watched this guy, I kept thinking about Michael Vick, and how fast and explosive he was
Starting point is 01:02:58 and can still make plays from the pocket and outside the pocket. I think that is a concern, but at the same time, when you really watch his film, you see him slide, you see him step out of bounds, you see him really protect himself,
Starting point is 01:03:09 get down and take a sack. He doesn't take a lot of sacks, but when the wolves are closing in the round, you see him go down. He looks like he's got the mindset to preserve himself to play for the long haul. So although it is a concern, I like the way he's been able to play at his size
Starting point is 01:03:24 and stay healthy. I want to talk about Josh Rosen because you played against them at Stanford. My concern was not his attitude. My concern is I look at his shoulders. I look at his neck. He's not thick. I told you, I thought Andrew Locke, just the thickness of him. He played with a layer of pudding I liked.
Starting point is 01:03:44 I like that. I like a guy that I know can take shots in practice. I worry about Josh's durability, and I think Arizona without O line worries. What is Josh Rosen to you going forward? Well, that is a concern that a lot of people expressed when he was coming out, that he didn't have great statured at the same time. He was banged up. He missed multiple games over two years with injuries and a concussion.
Starting point is 01:04:08 So that was a lot to be said with a guy that maybe isn't the most mobile guy but can still move in the pocket. Is he a target? Is he a guy that's going to continually get hurt? But you weigh that, just like we're talking about the downside, you weigh that with an elite arm, not a good arm, but an elite arm, an elite brain. A guy is really smart, picks things up really well.
Starting point is 01:04:27 He's got a great arm and is very accurate. So I think this guy is an NFL quarterback, whether that's in Arizona or someplace else. I think this guy's going to be a starter. Is there a player or two when you look at this that, David, you just think to yourself, you've said you're going to stay at Stanford, but if you took an NFL job and you had a top six or seven pick, is there a player that you look at here and go, boy, I would love to him for him to anchor part of our job? defense or offense. Who do you, one or two players you really like in this draft? Well, you mentioned Quentin Williams, but doggone it, I love Christian Wilkins from Clemson.
Starting point is 01:05:04 He plays with an energy. He plays with passion. He's strong. He's physical. He's a leader. He's a guy that she just like being around. And the teammates love him, the coaches love him. He plays with energy and passion for a guy his size. When the ball gets past him to flip his hips and turn and run and try to make plays down the field, he never gives up. He's one of the heartbeats of that football team, and he's one of those guys. I think he's going to have the same effect on an NFL roster. By the way, you have an interesting receiver from Stanford. J.J.R. Sego-Whiteside, who I think's long, can catch it in traffic. I have always believed, this is just my theory.
Starting point is 01:05:39 I'm going to get receivers, second, third, fourth, and fifth. I think he's one of those guys that's going to end up going like third, second, third, fourth round. It'd be a nice NFL player. Doug Baldwin, by the way, you've had a lot of Stanford guys go to the NFL at the receiver. position. I worry about receivers, not that they're flaky, but they're athletes. They're the fastest guy. They come with a little attitude. What have you done at Stanford? Your hit rate on receivers has been very, very good. Belichick's, by the way, David, is not. He has really got a spotty track record on receivers. Why is your hit rate so good on that position? Well, I think for us, I think being
Starting point is 01:06:23 Stanford University, I think our hate rate's pretty good for all those positions because we're looking for not just the great athletic ability. We're not just looking for how smart they are. We're looking for the character as well. You mentioned Doug Baldwin, who's been a leader up there in Seattle as a guy who's tough and smart and outspoken for the right reasons for to help people out. It's been a great voice for the franchise. And you look at JJ Saga Whiteside, who is brilliant. He's an international relations major. He's working on his master's intern for Condoleezza Rice. And at the same time, when he plays on Game Day, this guy changes field position and he scores, touch. touchdowns. He's been that igniter for two years for us that he's always the same guy every single day. It doesn't matter if things are going well or not going well. He brings the same mentality and work ethic and attitude and playmaking to every single game. All right, good stuff. Tonight, David Shaw, NFL Network coverage starts eighth consecutive year tonight 8 p.m. Eastern Coach, I'll be watching. Thanks so much for joining us from Nashville. Thanks, Colin. You bet. I want to mention that name again, because I saw a lot in the PAC 12. He's a long playmaker. J.J.R. Saga Whiteside, wide receiver, Stanford. That is your classic. Goes in the fourth round and ends up
Starting point is 01:07:31 coming in and figures out your playbook in about five minutes. Doug Baldwin, I believe, was undrafted. Doug Baldwin's been an unbelievable playmaker for the Seattle Seahawks. Half this league is undrafted. There are a ton of players. And my thing with wide receivers, don't go in the first round. The hit rates poor. Second, third, fourth, fifth. There are star receivers everywhere, and Stanford may have one of them. Daniel Jeremiah coming up around the corner. By the way, Josh Rosen and Kyler Murray, they have both tried to make their case, right? Kyler Murray's interviewing with Arizona pro day, tried to make his case. Josh Rosen, by the way, has according to source has been unbelievable at camp. Kingsbury said he's handling this with a
Starting point is 01:08:16 He's been brilliant. So they're both kind of trying to curry the favor of the Arizona Cardinals, almost like a political campaign. And I'll have thoughts on that coming up. This Mother's Day, show mom you care, 1-800 Flowers.com, 36 sorbet roses, 36 bucks, go to 1-800flowers.com. icon under the code heard HERD NFL draft the night joy Taylor is joining me so I mean the number
Starting point is 01:12:49 one pick is Arizona the number one pick you know nobody knows I there there are I mean it's it's fascinating that there's a million reports but people in Arizona don't know and so what a lot of you don't know is that Kyler Murray is trying to they obviously his family they want to get taken number one because there's more money so Kyler Murray's dad and Kyler murray the pro day they're buttering up to the Arizona Cardinals And Josh Rosen, by the way, has had, according to various reports that have been published all over the country, primarily in Arizona. He's been unbelievable in camp. He's putting his best foot forward because he wants to maintain the number one job.
Starting point is 01:13:27 So what you don't perhaps know is that over the last week, as these two are both trying to impress their bosses and the Arizona Cardinals, they have both started running ads in Phoenix. Yeah, like political campaigns. It's amazing. So I've never seen anything like it. And so Josh Rosen, I guess he got money, put some money in. He hired a political campaign manager, and he ran this ad recently in Arizona. His nickname is the chosen one. Some have called him the next Aaron Rogers.
Starting point is 01:14:05 He has all the talent. Now he just needs one more shot. Vote Josh Rosen for Cardinals quarterback. He's the future. I mean, that's very appealing to me. The chosen, you know who else I call the chosen one? Yeah, LeBron. LeBron.
Starting point is 01:14:20 Yeah. He's done pretty well. Kyler Murray saw this. He hired a rival political campaigner. Oh. He put together an ad and it ran two days later in Arizona. He's a Heisman trophy winner, a phenom designed for the high-powered offenses of the modern NFL. And one of the most exciting players in all of football.
Starting point is 01:14:44 vote Kyler Murray for Cardinals quarterback. He's the future. Now I'm split. I don't know which way to go. And so reportedly, Rosen saw Murray's ad and thought, listen, it's politics. We all know how politics works. Right.
Starting point is 01:15:00 Get a little edgy, little dirty. So Rosen's campaign just ran this two days ago. Did you know that in the last 15 NFL drafts, only one quarterback shorter than six feet has been drafted in the first round? Johnny Mansell. Still want to draft teeny weenie Kyler Murray? Vote Josh Rosen for Cardinals quarterback.
Starting point is 01:15:23 He's tall. That feels a little He's not being inaccurate, but it feels a little cheap. I mean, teeny weeny weeny is not a medical term. Right. So Kyler's camp heard this, and they paper the town 24 hours
Starting point is 01:15:38 later with their ad attacking Rosen. Want to know why the Cardinals have the Number one pick this year? Two words. Josh Rosen. He only won a paltry three games last year. Meanwhile, last year, Kyler Murray won four times that number. Vote Kyler Murray for Cardinals quarterback. College pro, eh, it's all the same. Now, it was still deadlocked. But this time, instead of waiting for Rosen, Kyler Murray yesterday released the ad first. Another negative ad against Rosen. Josh Rosen's supporters say the Cardinals shouldn't draft Kyler Murray
Starting point is 01:16:23 because he's a so-called two-sport athlete. Well, guess who played tennis in middle school? That's right. Josh Rosen. Vote Kyler Murray for Cardinals quarterback. His other sport is way cooler. Well, Rosen was furious. Rosen said enough is enough yesterday.
Starting point is 01:16:42 and came out hard, very negative against Kyler Murray. Do you know what Kyler Murray's major was in college? Human relations. Why would somebody need to learn how to relate to humans? Is he an alien? Vote Josh Rosen for Cardinals quarterback. He's definitely a human. That's just weird.
Starting point is 01:17:07 I thought that was weird. So which way do you go after all that campaigning? I don't know. It's It's coin flip You know, you're going to have to get in the booth and make a decision So anyway, a lot of you didn't realize This is what's happening in Arizona right now
Starting point is 01:17:22 These ads are papering The television channels down there Joy Taylor with the news No No Turn on the news This is the herd line news I mean we're joking
Starting point is 01:17:33 But if they don't end up taking Tyler Murray What is the campaign for sticking with Josh Rosen What if they keep both? I can't even I cannot with the two quarterback situation. So the Bucks have the fifth overall pick in tonight's draft, and Bruce Ariens will be making his first pick as the Tampa Bay head coach,
Starting point is 01:17:53 and Ariens has a very strong opinion on the right draft strategy. Can't draft for needs. You're right for need to get fired. Draft the best players. If you've got two of them, you've got three of them. And just take the best players that are available for you. Now, if you've got four players right there together, And what them is a need, that's the whole month.
Starting point is 01:18:17 This is much debated this theory. For the most part, I would agree with him because I think you need talent. Like coaching is fine. Absolutely. And culture is fine. But there are positions that are a more valuable. Right. But this can be your strategy as long as you have a quarterback.
Starting point is 01:18:39 For example, the Giants taking the best overall players. as opposed to taking a quarterback is not the strategy that I want. If you have the quarterback set, which I don't necessarily know that the Buccaneers do, but they are sticking with James Winston. So if you have the quarterback, then you can draft the best player. Mostly, just draft the back. Like Seattle right now has got a superstar linebacker in the middle of their defense and a superstar quarterback.
Starting point is 01:19:05 They can pretty much just take what's the best dude out there? They need an edge rush. Or after that, they just need players. You know, same with the Rams. same with most teams in this league. About 18 teams in this league love their quarterback. Seven tolerate it and seven would move on in a minute. Right. So if you have your quarterback, then you can take the best player.
Starting point is 01:19:22 So Westbrook and the Thunder were eliminated from the playoffs on Tuesday by a Damien Lillard walkoff shot. This is the third straight year. The team has been eliminated in the first round. And one Western Conference executive is saying that Westbrook might not be the type of player to lead his team to a title. He said he's a transcendent player, but I am not. not convinced he's a transcendent winner. Yeah, I don't think that's a big that feels obvious, doesn't you?
Starting point is 01:19:47 Yeah, I feel like this has become Russell Westbrook's story. We talked a little bit about this week that he is very, he's having more and more parallels to Alan Iverson. Which, I don't think is a bad thing. Everyone's not going to win a championship and everyone has a different style of play.
Starting point is 01:20:03 Now, I think all of us would in general like to see some sort of evolution with Russell Westbrook because we would like to see him win a championship. championship. But in today's MBA, the way it's currently set up, that's going to be a very difficult thing to do. And it would take a lot of concessions on Westbrook's part. And he's got to fix whatever's going on with the shot. And not all of these problems are Westbrook. Stephen Adams is an overpaid, good overpaid player. And they've got four guys on that roster that couldn't
Starting point is 01:20:32 hit the broad side of the barn. That team is not built to win a championship. And that is not Westbrook's responsibility. And they have, if you go down the list of players that they had and have moved off of and stuck with Westbrook. Like that is not all on him. That is for sure. But there are things that he needs to adjust in his game. And finally, the NFL Players Association has released their list of top players in merchandise sales for 2018.
Starting point is 01:20:57 For the second straight year, Tom Brady is the top seller. Brady is the first player to top the list three times. Oh, Dax number two. Cowboys. Carson Wentz is actually kind of surprising. Ezekiel Elliott, Mahome. Sakemon Barclay, Aaron Rogers, Deshawn Watson, Khalil Mack, and Drew Brie.
Starting point is 01:21:15 By the way, Carson Wentz is pretty amazing, Joy. He's not playing. Yeah, that to me is the name at six out. Every other name on there is pretty obvious. But Tom Brady, I mean, how many Tom Brady jerseys do you need? He's going into his 20th year. That's the only thing like, no hate, no shade. I just don't understand it.
Starting point is 01:21:31 Like, how many Tom Brady jerseys do you need? You know what I think it is? He did really well early. Then he had a few years that he didn't sell as well. Now I think the jersey feels like he's, he's so surpassed everybody in Super Bowls. It's almost like you have, if you love the NFL, even if you're not a Patriot fan, you have to have like,
Starting point is 01:21:48 he has to have a Brady Jersey. You have to have a Brady Jersey. You kind of have to have a kid growing up, like Terry Bradshaw was in the Super Bowl every other year. He just had to have a Bradshaw jersey. I guess. Yeah. But he also led the sales in specific categories of pet gear,
Starting point is 01:22:01 socks, wall decals, and cutouts, cake toppers, jigsaw puzzles, and bobbleheads. So if you would do like Tom Brady on top of a, on top of your cake. He's selling a lot of those. Joy with the news. Well, that's the news.
Starting point is 01:22:17 And thanks for stopping by. The herd line news. There's a lot of talkers out there when it comes to NFL draft. One of the guys I really trust is a former scout for the Ravens, the Browns, and the Eagles. He knows his stuff. His name is Daniel Jeremiah. He'll be working on the NFL network tonight with my buddy David Shaw via the Coward Global Satellite Network. Also does Chargers color analyst.
Starting point is 01:22:37 All right. Good to see you, Daniel. Let's start with this. I depend on you a lot. I follow you a lot. I trust you a lot. Daniel Jones, I'm hearing rumors number six. I watched him.
Starting point is 01:22:48 He's a decent athlete. I don't see a ton of arm strength. He looks like a little less talented than Matt Ryan. Maybe I'm wrong. Boy, that feels like a reach-it-six to me. They're saying the Giants like him. You tell me as a scout, am I wrong? Do you see him as a top-10 pick?
Starting point is 01:23:06 Colin, he's my 32nd overall player. he's my fourth quarterback. Now, with him, the thing that is unique, I do think he has a high floor. I don't think the ceiling is quite as high as some of the other guys. I think he's going to be a safe player. You know, people that, it seems like he's kind of been the whipping boy around the country. He's not a great player, but he is a good player. And you have to keep in mind, while he's at Duke, he has not had a player drafted from Duke from the time he's been their starting quarterback, so he hasn't had much around him. Teams love that he's smart. They love that he can move around a little bit. he's somebody I think you look at the floor for him as a tannahill you again you're hoping you're getting Matt Ryan that's the same exact one I used but the floor is in that Ryan Tannahill range so to me six is a little bit early it's a little bit rich but if you love him if that's your guy I wouldn't be shocked if it did end up happening
Starting point is 01:23:54 Duane Haskins don't love his feet I think he could struggle to reset but I do like his body urban told me he's great at the line of scrimmage he appears to be a kid that can see the whole field which is you You know, not every quarterback comes into the league like that. I think he's my favorite quarterback prospect. What do you think? Well, he comes in at number two for me, but really the interesting thing about Duane, I think he's not an independent player. I think he's dependent largely on what you do in front of him, because when he can work through progressions, he's outstanding.
Starting point is 01:24:28 He can make every single throw. And I talk about a lack of mobility. I'm not talking about wanting to see him roll out. I'm not talking about zone reads. I'm talking about just some urgency and suddenness to be able to climb to step, to get away from pressure inside the pocket, reset your feet and deliver. That's an area that he struggled in. His eyes are very fast, very quick, getting through progressions. Sometimes his feet are a little bit behind, and that can cause some inaccuracy.
Starting point is 01:24:52 So I think in the right situation, well protected, he can be successful. But one of the challenges, Colin, evaluating college kids to the NFL, and particularly the two at the top in this year's draft, they have not had to function in a lot of chaos playing on the best teams in their conference. And once you get into the NFL, you're not going to have that decided of a talent advantage. I end up with Murray over Haskins because Murray with his legs can get away from some of that where Haskins can't. Does it worry you and we nitpick him to death? He is small. I think Russell Wilson plays at 220.
Starting point is 01:25:25 He looks like he plays at about 190. And also, they say he's not a big film junkie, which, I mean, some guys are just more instinctive and others, and that's not always bad. What do you like and what scares you? Yeah, sure. Great questions. To me, the concerns I had with him from the very beginning were commitment because you didn't know what was going on with baseball.
Starting point is 01:25:46 So he checked that box. He's okay there. And then it was durability. And I know he packed on some weight. If you compare him and Russell, Russell cut weight for the combine. Kyler packed on weight. So their weights look similar on paper, but when you're next to them, they're not that similar in build.
Starting point is 01:26:00 So those would be my major concerns. Also, the one-year starter. You can compare him to Russell Wilson, but Russell had played a lot more football in college. Russell was built a little bit sturdier, so there was no concerns in that department. I like the plays Kyler can make. He can play from the pocket. He can make every kind of throw. But again, he had four NFL offensive linemen that we drafted in this year's draft.
Starting point is 01:26:24 The fifth one will be drafted next year. He's throwing to a first round pick in this year's draft, likely a first round pick in next year's draft. You juxtapose that to what we were just talking. about with Daniel Jones, he's always taking the field with a talent advantage in high school and at Oklahoma. When he steps on the field with the Arizona Cardinals, that will not be the case. That's so interesting. Daniel Jeremiah, former scout for the Browns, Eagles, and Ravens.
Starting point is 01:26:47 He's now part of the Chargers broadcast and a guy I really trust. Daniel, you know, we were just joking earlier. Nick Bosa is a good player, but most scouts tell you he can be a little tight, a little rigid, and he's not as talented and as fluid as his brother Joey Bosa. And he's considered like a can't miss guy. I want you to talk about him because what my guys tell me is, listen, he's more of a grinder than his brother, but he's not as gifted as his brother.
Starting point is 01:27:13 Is that fair and does that worry you? Well, you hear that from some folks. I know some people have that opinion around the league. I don't. And I get a chance to watch his brother. You mentioned doing the Chargers each and every week. And I see so many similarities between the two. The difference, I would say, with Nick,
Starting point is 01:27:30 Nick's got a little more leverage, he's a little shorter. He can get in you and he can win with. power. And if you look at the best pass rushers, just look at sacks each and every year. You can get an hammer with the speed guys and people can say, ah, Nick Bosa doesn't have that elite speed. The guys that are there every year, the 12, 14 sack guys, they're power guys. That's a big part of what they do and that's what Nick does. And I absolutely believe that translates. There are some god-awful right tackles in this league that aren't going to be able to mess and handle Nick Bosa. So to me, I think he's somebody that not only for me, has a high floor, has a high ceiling.
Starting point is 01:28:03 I think he's the best player in the draft. It's 1A, 1B. Quentin Williams is right there with him. To me, if you're set at edge, you take Quinn and Williams. I have no problems with that whatsoever. Those to me are clearly the two best players in this draft. They call it two tight-end personnel in the NFL. Increasingly, some teams like to use it. I could see New England moving up and getting a T.J. Hawkinson,
Starting point is 01:28:27 who I kind of feel like is sort of a can't-miss player. Iowa does a very good job, by the way. They may not win Big Ten titles, but their guys can play in the NFL. They do a really good job. I want you to talk about him in an increasingly important position. He feels can't miss to me, T.J. Hawkinson. I love him.
Starting point is 01:28:47 And I ask who's your favorite player in the draft for me? It is T.J. Hawkinson. And having watched the Patriots, doing that charger game against the Patriots, seeing Gronk dominate the game without even really touching the football. Because of what he did in the run game, you can't be right defensively when you have an inline tight end that not only can mall you in the run game, but is more than adequate in the passing game. And at the end of Gronk's career, like he wasn't the same guy.
Starting point is 01:29:11 He was athletically. But he still was very physical in the run game. He could box guys out. He has a feel for kind of working in space. It's a very instinctive position. And this kid, Hawkinson has it. And I think if you're the Jacksonville Jags and you just put all that money into Nick Foles, to me, if you want to make another investment to make the first,
Starting point is 01:29:30 investment looks smart. You take T.J. Hawkinson and you don't look back. Daniel. Daniel, you know how much I love you. Great stuff tonight. We'll be watching. NFL Network live coverage, draft tonight starting at 8. Thank you so much, Daniel. I appreciate you, column. I'll catch up you soon. All right. Yeah, I went to a charger game last year, ran into him, and he just does a really, really good job. It's just, this is so great for me. If you're bored out there right now with me, I feel bad for you. I pity the fool, because I'm having the time of my life. I'm breaking down blocking from tight ends. This is as great as America gets.
Starting point is 01:30:04 This is the, you know, the political part of our country is all divided. Can we be unified here? T.J. Hawkinson for president. It's the happiest I've ever been breaking down T.J. Hawkinson film. Such a dork. Coming up, Draymond Green is wearing me out. That's coming up. Starting point is 01:34:49 It is great to have you in. Chris Mannix and Jay Glazer last hour. You don't want to miss it. You do not want to miss the last hour. Let me just say this. Warriors lost last night, and there's two reasons the Warriors are losing more now. They're bored out of their minds and Draymond Green. They don't have a big anymore now that Boogie Cousins is hurt.
Starting point is 01:35:07 They just don't have a legitimate big. And here's my thing with Draymond Green. Can we stop with this whole—Dremon Green's making $20 million a year. Draymond Green's worth about nine. There was a brief time that Draymond Green, I thought, had real value. He was the bouncer at the bar. He was the bouncer for a finesse team. the tough guy. He was not a liability
Starting point is 01:35:26 shooting. And frankly, I thought he brought a certain dexterity and versatility to the franchise. Now he's a liability shooting. He's 0 for his last nine on threes. He's no longer the great defender. Clippers go after him. And frankly, the ability to do versatility thing,
Starting point is 01:35:45 I think KD's just more versatile and does more things well. So if I'm going to pay one guy a fortune, it's going to be KD, and I'll get rid of the other guy. I also don't think the chemistry is great with him. I think he publicly kind of embarrassed KD earlier this year. And I think pro athletes in their 20s and early 30s tend to keep score a little bit. But when I watch the Warriors, he's always been the fourth least skilled guy.
Starting point is 01:36:06 And I think he's a niche player. Sort of like if you have a niche player, you can't pay him a lot. Like Tavon Austin, the Rams a few years ago gave Tavon Austin the wide receiver a huge contract. He's a fourth best wide receiver. A couple reverses, a punt returner. I saw Buffalo gave Cole B. a lot of money. Cole Beasley should be your third best wide receiver. Dramon Green to me has been reduced
Starting point is 01:36:31 to an ineffective shooter, an average defender, and almost an annoyance to his teammates as much as the other team. And I think of the two problems they have in Golden State, one of them is just apathy. I think Kevin Durant and Steph Curry are so gifted offensively. The team sometimes feel like they'll be saved by Kevin Durant and Curry. They'll be saved at some point. And I think that kind of psychologically hovers over the team.
Starting point is 01:36:55 And the other thing is, I don't think Draymond Green's nearly the player he was a year and a half ago. I just don't think he is. So I saw this quote, and this is interesting, draft tonight. Drew Locke is about the third, fourth best quarterback. The two I've talked about, Drew Haskins, my favorite, Kyler-Marie second. I think they can both play. Kyler's probably more ready to play now. But Drew Locke came out and said, I'd rather actually go 32 than number one to a lousy team.
Starting point is 01:37:20 And that sounds crazy, right? like you'd rather go number one. But remember, since they created the new rookie pay scale, most NFL players, almost all of them make their money on the second and third contract. And it's almost impossible as a quarterback. If somebody butchers, you, the owner, the team butchers your first three years in the league at quarterback, you're done. Drew Breeze is the outlier. Drew Breeze, first run, they bailed on him.
Starting point is 01:37:47 He went on to be a great quarterback. He's a transformational all-time talent. But I got to tell you, with the new CBA, I totally agree with this kid. And I don't think you can overcome bad ownership or bad management in the NFL. And I think there's 13 teams in the National Football League, the Giants are the newest team to join this group, that when I say their name, you have a negative connotation of ownership or management. Raiders, Titans, Giants, Lions, Jags, Washington, Jets, Browns, Bengals, Miami, Arizona, Tampa, Buffalo, Jacksonville.
Starting point is 01:38:19 Now, I do think Buffalo has got the right coaching staff. And I do think Mike Vrable, Tennessee's coach, and Adam Gase can win games in his league. But that's over a third of the league. Then I think there's only 10 teams in the league fewer that really feel like they're at the top of the mountain. They're really well-run. Smart owner, good GM, good personnel, Green Bay Saints, Steelers, Patriots, Rams, Eagles, Chargers, Chiefs, Cowboys. yes, the Cowboys, they're new to this group, and the Colts with Chris Ballard. They're also new in the last couple of years.
Starting point is 01:38:54 And then there's a bunch of teams that are like, it kind of depends on the year. Sometimes I like Seattle. Sometimes I like Atlanta. Sometimes I like Carolina and their choices. Sometimes I don't. But with the new rookie pay scale, you can make that money. You go ask a Matt Leinert where if your first team can't get it right, people bail on you. They just quit on you.
Starting point is 01:39:15 Scouts do, owners do, GMs do. And so when Drew comes out and says that and says, I'd rather go to a great team and sit for a couple years than go to a lousy team. Never forget this. 12, 13 teams in the league are just not well run. And I tell young people all the time, don't chase money. Chase good management. There's a sea of money in the world. There's not a sea of good management.
Starting point is 01:39:40 I think most players, if they're being reasonable and not egotistical about it, would say it's not when you go, it's where you go. I would say the same for the NBA as well. well. If you go to an organization that is consistently poorly run, Phoenix. That means that you're not going into a system that can develop you because otherwise, why would they be that available to take you? Like the big money in the NFL is your second and third contract. Remember, you only get now 30 million in the top four spots in the draft. In most businesses, your big money doesn't come into your second or third contract. Exactly. So I'm, so 30 million, the first four picks, which after taxes is about 16. And then by like the
Starting point is 01:40:18 fifth through the 10th, it's down to 20. And then after that, after taxes, you're getting $6 million bucks and you're 21 years old. That's not lasting your entire life. If you want a long career in any sport, you want to go to an organization that can develop and support you. So Aaron Rogers
Starting point is 01:40:34 was disappointed he dropped in the draft. Would you rather go to Green Bay? Go look at the teams that drafted at the top of that draft. So Aaron Rogers lost money initially. But Aaron Rogers now is the highest, second highest big quarterback in the NFL. I'm not saying Aaron wasn't talented enough to overcome some issues,
Starting point is 01:40:54 but I think it's fair to say that Aaron has been given a lot from Green Bay. Good ownership more than he would get at Chicago and Detroit in his own division. But that's all ego. I mean, think about it. Does anyone really consider where Aaron Rogers went in the draft? The only time we even really care about when someone went in the draft is if it's like Tom Brady going in the sixth round or Dak Prescott going in the fourth round. If it's some agree. me just drop. That's the only time it really matters. MDrive is a supplement. Stronger, more energy drive. Go to MDrive for men.com today to refine your prime. Put in the code heard 20% off. Starting point is 01:42:33 Warriors Rockets, not yet. I think it's going to happen. But there's some fat Toronto in Philadelphia. Out East is a fascinating series. Philly more talent. Toronto, a little more depth. Maybe think of coaching edge there. We'll see.
Starting point is 01:42:46 So this is great. So Chris Mannix in 15 minutes, later and best for last. Jay Glazer with all the latest draft news. Well, the first round of the NFL draft is tonight, and rumors have been swirling all week. Here's the big rumor today. The Giants, New York Giants, Daniel Jones, Duke quarterback, selected with a number six pick.
Starting point is 01:43:10 That's the big rumor from people who cover the Giants and are in the room. That would be an incredible reach. If that's the sixth pick, that is an incredible reach. So Sam Darnold a year ago, there's not a scout in America that doesn't have Sam Darnold drafted significantly higher than Daniel Jones at Duke. Darnold's bigger, stronger, more athletic, better arm, not negotiable, not arguable. Dave Gettleman came out a couple weeks ago and said, the priority is to select the best players. You can't go for position.
Starting point is 01:43:45 You got to get the best guys. that's why we got Sequin Barclay. We thought he was the best quarterback, the best player, excuse me. That's why we took him over Sam Darnow. We thought he was the best player. Okay, if that's the truth, if that's really what you're doing, you're telling me Daniel Jones is the sixth best college football player in America. He's not the sixth best college football player in the ACC.
Starting point is 01:44:06 He's not a top 15 player in the SEC. He's not a top five player in the Big Ten. Listen, the last two years against A.C. The BCC teams, the best teams he plays. He was 6 and 10. That's with an exceptional head coach. He completed 54% of his throws in the ACC. I'm not saying he doesn't have value, but I have been on something for years.
Starting point is 01:44:33 If you do not complete 60% minimum of your college throws, you will not make it big in the NFL. There's one exception, Matt Ryan. and he was like 59%. This young man with a great college coach, with a fluffy out-of-conference schedule, under 60%, 54% last two years. He's a three-year starter. So that means this kid knows the offense,
Starting point is 01:45:05 got the same coach, not a lot of chaos, 54% in conference. So if you take him, what you're telling me is, you must think he's better than Sam Darnold. out of your gourd. By the way, he's not only not better than Sam Narnel, he's not better than Josh Rosen. Not a single scout thinks that.
Starting point is 01:45:23 And the Giants have 12 draft picks. They could give up one, the 17th, and take Josh Rosen. My takeaway on what the Giants should do, number six pick, take a defensive player. Number 17, trade it for Josh Rosen. And then you've got 10 more picks. Because actually the Giants over the last couple years have, upgraded their own line. They've got a good tight end, couple of decent receivers, star running back.
Starting point is 01:45:49 They just need defensive players and a quarterback. So this is the classic, say one thing to another. This is the big rumor. Now remember this. I know what you're saying. Colin, you don't know. I told you, Johnny Mansell is not going to work. I told you, Tim Tebow, disaster. Never forget. I'm also the guy that says, don't take wide receivers early. Go back to the 2015, 16, 2017 draft. I'm like, don't take wide receivers. It's the number one bus position. Draft two years ago.
Starting point is 01:46:24 Who's the number one bust? John Ross, wide receiver. Called it. Don't draft them first round. Nine picked to Cincinnati. Bust. This has the makings of a wild reach. A wild reach.
Starting point is 01:46:38 And I don't want to hear. here, well, what do you know? I have basic theories. I write books on these stupid theories of mine. And when it comes to NFL quarterbacks, and by the way, don't tell me I said Baker's a bust. I told you, Baker's not going to be a bust. Baker-Bainfield's not going to be a bust.
Starting point is 01:46:54 I told you that. I wouldn't draft him. Undraftable, if I was a GM, all that nonsense, crotch-grabbing stuff, he's not going to be a bust. He's too accurate. And before you go crazy, oh, look how good he is. He finished third in his own division last year. Let's settle down.
Starting point is 01:47:06 He finished third. Under 500. Let's not go. crazy. Okay, let me shift to this. So it's just kind of fun. Pretty good first round of the NBA playoffs. I mean, Clippers last night, Lou Williams, beat the Warriors. So here's what we know about the Warriors. This is not as good a team as two years ago that won a title. It's not as good a team as it was last year. They're very thin. They only play two guys off the bench, really, Iggy and Looney. They don't play a ton of defense because Draymond Green used to be a defensive
Starting point is 01:47:38 stopper. He is no longer a defensive stopper. He's just an overplayed niche player. And there's a real apathy here. When you have Kevin Durant, and I think it's a lot of it's Kevin Durant. When you have a great player like Kevin Durant, the
Starting point is 01:47:54 warriors sometimes get sloppy and lazy and wait for Kevin Durant to bail them out. I mean, they were clearly looking ahead to the Houston Rockets who just beat the Jazz. In fact, Lou Williams of the Clippers admitted last night that he could sense he could sense as they were beating the Warriors,
Starting point is 01:48:10 yeah, they're just looking ahead to play in the Rockets. For us, our focus was to come in and extend the series to get another game on our home floor. It's their mistake for looking ahead, you know, and so that's on them. But when I think of this series, what really jumps out to me is Kevin Durant has done it. As there's a lot of great basketball players in the world.
Starting point is 01:48:33 But over the last 20 years, the best basketball player in the world really tends to separate from even the second, third, four, fifth, six. It does take Michael Jordan. When Michael was in his peak, the second best player was Barclay, Drexler, Akeem, excellent players, not close to Michael. When LeBron was in his prime, let's say four years ago, back four years, it was a really young Kevin Durant who was fully developed. Steph Curry was small and fun. Derek Rose, tiny, tiny Derek Rose.
Starting point is 01:49:12 It really wasn't close for about six or seven years. Kevin Durant is in his prime. Now, he's probably in the back of it in his prime. But Kevin Durant separated from the NBA. He's like Michael and LeBron. He is significantly better than every other player. Now, I only felt this once LeBron got hurt. So maybe LeBron comes back healthy and closes the gap. I think he's better than LeBron today. It may be inches not feet if LeBron if LeBron comes off the injury and gets rolling. But I'm watching Kevin Durant,
Starting point is 01:49:43 and I think a huge part of Golden State's apathy is you can just rely on Kevin. You just kind of sort of wait, staying around, and even with Steph and even with Clay, he had 45 last night. Every NBA coach is trying to make the opposition shoot tough twos. It doesn't exist with Kevin Durant.
Starting point is 01:50:08 There are no tough twos. You can't force him into shooting a tough two. They're all 45% shots. When Michael Jordan was the king, the gap between him and Barclay and Drexler and Akeem was huge. The gap between LeBron and his prime. Derek Rose, a young KD, Westbrook was huge. Who's the second best player in the NBA?
Starting point is 01:50:32 James Harden? Yonis can't shoot threes or bowl. handle like KD. That's a big old gap. Who is the second best player? James Hardin not as athletic, doesn't have his length, doesn't have his size. I mean, I think Kevin's just separated from the
Starting point is 01:50:50 NBA, and I've seen it having multiple times. You know, I thought Magic and Bird actually in their prime had kind of separated from the league until Michael came in later. But when you got a guy like Kevin Durant on your team,
Starting point is 01:51:06 team is really easy to look over and think, we'll get ours later. Okay, stuff just literally popped up. Ian Rappaport, the Arizona Cardinals, have made a decision on number one. If they have, they're keeping it quiet. A source tells Ian Rappaport that Steve Kime has reached out to at least one player, Alabama defensive tackle Quinn and Williams, who I think is the best player in the draft, to let him know he's still a possibility to go first overall. So that would mean they're keeping Rosen.
Starting point is 01:51:41 Oh, Lordy. You know what? I am going home right after the show and sitting on the couch, eating bugles, and just waiting for the draft. Bugles? Oh, I love them. They're little baby horns made of corn. Yeah, I know what a bugle is.
Starting point is 01:51:56 They're delicious. I'm not even going to go and work out today. I'm going to sit, turn the TV on, and just wait for the draft. Oh, by the way, here's another one. Diana Rusini. She works at ESPN. She said, oh, God, the Redskins. They're not only in disagreement, the Redskins,
Starting point is 01:52:11 about whether to go quarterback with their top pick, but which quarterback to select. Oh, lovely. What have you been doing the last three weeks? They've eaten bugles like me. You don't like bugles? Delicious. I mean, bugles are like, that's fine.
Starting point is 01:52:26 You're the only person I've ever heard to admit they like bugles. Yeah. Like you and four-year-olds. Well, I like to keep my... Do you put them on your fingers? You put them on the end of your finger? Yeah. Absolutely.
Starting point is 01:52:35 Pretend to be the evil witch. Hey, a lot of you people are getting old right in front of your eyes. Old youthful coward ears eating bugles. I put them on my fingers. Are bugles keeping you young? Oh, absolutely. Young as I could be at this point with gray hair. Put them on your finger.
Starting point is 01:52:47 Blow the little baby French horns. I paid you for a more sophisticated guy, like some veggies and hummus or something. Not that sophisticated. Kind of stupid. I'm totally honest with you. Chris Mannix will make me smarter next plus Jay Glazer. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific.
Starting point is 01:53:03 NFL draft tonight, but one of my favorite guys is in studio right now. Chris Mannix, he does boxing, he does NBA, Sports Illustrated, the crossover with Chris Manix podcast is a must listen for NBA guys. Great to have you, bud. Good to beer. Before I get to, you know, you cover a lot of Celtics, and I have picked them to win the Eastern Conference. I think Milwaukee, Boston, I'll take Kyrie hitting late shots,
Starting point is 01:53:26 situationally, I'll take Brad Stevens. I think Tatum Horford are guys that rise in big moments. I want to start with a Kyrie situation. There is this understanding now that KD is leaving the Warriors, and that's kind of sucking all the air out of the room. But Kyrie leaving the Celtics is on the East Coast, are KD leaving the Warriors out west? He and Stevens have a different mindset.
Starting point is 01:53:50 It's an imperfect relationship. But there are other factors working. My gut tells me he doesn't leave Boston. What do you believe? I lean towards staying for a couple of reasons. One thing people are now starting to realize over the last, you know, couple of months is just how much the injuries of last season resonate with Kyrie Irving. He's talked extensively in the last couple of weeks about how this time last year he was sitting at home.
Starting point is 01:54:22 He was taking antibiotics. He was dealing with stuff that he never had to deal with before. And when you're going through something like that, money starts to resonate with you. A long-term contract starts to resonate with you. Where would John Wall be right now if he didn't take the bird in the hand? John Wall, I hate to say set for life with anything,
Starting point is 01:54:41 but John Wall is going to make $170 million over the next four years, and he might not be close to the John Wall that once was. That's number one, the contract and the full five years that only Boston can give him. I think that's a bigger factor than people think. I also think that, look, the Celtics, since day one have not treated Kyrie Irving like a regular player. They have treated this like he's the franchise player and this is a partnership.
Starting point is 01:55:06 So they haven't exactly said to him like, you know, stick around. Here comes Anthony Davis. But you better be sure that he's aware that if he sticks around, Boston's going to go out and do everything they have to do to get Anthony Davis. So when Kyrie Irving hits free agency this summer, he is going to have the option of going back to Boston on a five-year deal, which is valuable to him, and potentially have one of his best friends in the league, Anthony Davis, playing alongside him on a team that won't have to gut itself to go and get Anthony Davis.
Starting point is 01:55:36 I think Kevin Durant's the best player in the world. You disagree. I think he's the best offensive player in the world. I think if I'm in game seven and I want one player, it's Kevin Durant. But I just think we just grossly underestimate what Janus has done this year in Milwaukee. Kevin Durant's doing all these things and they're remarkable. What he did last night was remarkable. but Kevin Durant, when he's out there on the floor, he at least, defenses have the threat of what Steph Curry might do to them. They have the threat of what Clay Thompson could do to them for the outside. Kevin Durant benefits from that and a lot of one-on-one type of defense out there.
Starting point is 01:56:10 Yonis doesn't have that. I like Chris Middleton a lot. He's not Curry or Clay Thompson. No. Brooke Lopez, having a great year. Eric Bledsoe, nice year. None of these guys are on the level of what Kevin Durant has in Golden State. And Janus has just put up MVP.
Starting point is 01:56:25 He's going to be the MVP. He's put up MVP level numbers without having those types of players around him. And if you're talking about the best player, Colin, you have to throw in defense because Janus is going to be defensive player the year, in my opinion, as well. And as great as Kevin Durant is, offensively, he can score from the perimeter, he can score from the paint. Yonis can defend fives, he can defend ones, and he does it in extremely high level. When you're talking about who the best player is, you've got to throw the defensive side as well. I don't want this to be taking as critique of KD, because KD is. is awesome. But as far as the best player in the league this year,
Starting point is 01:57:00 totality, I would take Yannis. I'm not going to talk Rockets Warriors. It's not final yet. And the clippers are pesky and they go back home. I'll take Milwaukee in Boston. I'll take Boston in a very close series late. I think they win one of the first two games in Milwaukee. You will take who? I lean towards Boston. The Marcus Smart injury gives me reason for pause. Gordon Hayward playing better. Gordon Hayward's great. I mean, Gordon Hayward, as people in Boston told me around February when I would ask about, you know, are they looking at guys for at the trade deadline? They would say Gordon Hayward is our trade deadline acquisition.
Starting point is 01:57:31 You know, Gordon Hayward's the guy that's going to be playing like Gordon Hayward come playoff time. And that was kind of hard to believe right around early to mid-February. He had some good games, but he was nowhere near this consistent player. And the biggest jump in Gordon Hayward from November to where he is right now is just his confidence in going to the basket and his confidence in playing through context. By the way, that's what happens after. an injury. Yeah. Like motorcycle driver, basketball player, Tom Brady first year after the big injury.
Starting point is 01:57:58 I never forget. He hated people diving at his feet for two years. Gordon's got it back. The Lakers situation is interesting. How bad is it? What layer are we talking about there? I don't think they can land Anthony Davis because I don't think they have the pieces. I mean, I've often said this and written this, but if Kyrie Irving resigns with Boston,
Starting point is 01:58:22 this is not even a conversation. Anthony Davis will be a Celtic because Danny Aange will not get outbid for Anthony Davis. I mean, they'll give you Gordon Hayward, Al Horford, they'll give you what? I think Tatum, Brown. Oh, really? Draft picks. Oh, yeah. No, it's got to take
Starting point is 01:58:36 Jason Tatum, I think, to go and get I don't think David Griffin would say. So you think Boston will absolutely out, well, the Lakers don't have that many pieces anymore because Lanzo Ball can stay healthy. Yeah, and there's no outbidding Boston. We say this every year when it comes to Celtics, the Celtics can outbid anybody. Well, they can.
Starting point is 01:58:51 Like they come lottery night, they could have as many as four first round picks in this draft. And they've got Tatum. And they've got Brown who's playing like the guy we saw last year in the playoffs. Okay. So if they don't get Anthony Davis, I said a couple days ago, Joy was here. It feels Hail Mary for Jimmy Butler. If Philadelphia gets whacked by Toronto, Butler exit stage right, jettisons the Sixers. Is he a hopeful Laker?
Starting point is 01:59:14 I can't. Is LeBron's next three years going to be playing with this group of dudes? I don't know. I mean, I don't know if you want to get Jimmy Butler. you'd have to four-year probably max him out, just guessing, you know, the marketplace being what it is. At some point with Jimmy Butler,
Starting point is 01:59:28 you're going to be paying for past production. You know, right now, he's worth a high dollar on a max-level contract. But year two, year three, does the body start to break down a little bit? What are you paying for when it comes to Jimmy Butler? It's the same thing maybe with DeMarcus cousins. What are you paying for if you go out and sign DeMarcus cousins
Starting point is 01:59:45 to a high-level deal? Lakers are in a tough spot. I was thinking about this when I was, you know, just thinking about the Laker, coaching situation. And the Lakers and Sons right now both want Monty Williams. He's at the top of both their lists. Is it possible the sons are a better coaching job than the Lakers?
Starting point is 01:59:58 Well, I get Devin Booker, who's young. I get the kid they just drafted last year from Mardryden. I had size. Who was great, by the way, but of big numbers this year. And by the way, aren't they one of the lottery teams? Yeah, with a top chance to get the top four pick? So if I get John Morant, Devin Booker, it's a better job in the Lakers. You got to take the Robert
Starting point is 02:00:14 Sarver stuff out of the equation because Robert Sarver has proven himself to be not a great owner in this league and Medelson. Okay, but the question is, is Jeannie Buss a great owner? No, I mean, the Lakers, like, and I gave Jeannie Buss a Mulligan, you know, a couple of weeks ago when Magic Johnson left, it said, look, she made her a mistake, she's a new owner,
Starting point is 02:00:30 but now she kind of sees how things are being done there. But instead, you're hearing about Linda Rambus advising her on some of these decisions. Kurt Rambus is in a meeting, you know, with the... I saw that. With the coaching search, I don't understand any of this. Like, it's hard to build an NBA franchise. It's not hard
Starting point is 02:00:46 to find out who the guys are who can build an NBA franchise. Why today, Oklahoma City season is over, why today they're not FedExing, a big check to Sam Presti with $20 million on it is beyond me. Like send him, or forget $20 million. Send him a blank check and say, Sam,
Starting point is 02:01:02 you fill in the number. And then Jeannie Busk can step back and say, I'm done. I just hired the best available GM and basketball, and now I can watch this guy go out there and work. And I can approve of every decision he makes because this guy built a mini dynasty in Oklahoma City. He survived the loss of
Starting point is 02:01:18 Kevin Durant to acquire Paul George and we can debate how good they are. That's fine. But that's a small market team with two top 10, top 15 type players on it. Dennis Schroeder was a good get for them too. Incredible get for them. They kind of stole him from Atlanta. Yeah.
Starting point is 02:01:30 Now, but I could knock Presti for this. And I have on this show, he enabled Westbrook. And that's, I mean, I think they, I, listen, it's easy for me to drop the hammer. I said three years ago, you can't win titles with Westbrook. There's too much rigidity to his game. He's playing 100 miles an hour. Nobody else can keep up. I think he's better than John Wall, but there is an Iverson-John Wall, a component here where he's almost playing by himself.
Starting point is 02:01:56 He can finish with eight assists, but it feels like Russell's playing by himself sometimes. Couldn't I knock Presti and say, dude, you chose Westbrook. You had Harden, K.D., and Russell, and you put your arms around Russell and the two other left. The Arden mistake will always haunt him. He knows that. He should have paid Hardin when he had the opportunity and kept him around. I don't know if choosing KD over Russ was really the thing. I'm not sure that that would have made a difference.
Starting point is 02:02:17 Is KD leaving for sure? I would, I mean, nothing's for sure. Kevin Durant in a room is unpredictable, because Kevin Durant can be influenced in a room, as he was a couple of years ago, by Golden State and what they did. I'm not sure he can be influenced by Golden State at this point. I think he might be influenced by the Clippers.
Starting point is 02:02:33 Just my freedom. Hold on. So you don't think it's New York. I don't think it's a guarantee. It's New York. You think the Clippers are in the running for him? Because the Clippers right now are submitting their resume to Kevin Durant. I mean, look at what we are without you.
Starting point is 02:02:49 What the Clippers need is a Kevin Durant. You put Kevin Durant in the Clippers next year. Are they not co-favorite in the Western Conference? They're interesting. Up there. I tell you, Doc Rivers had the best. I think Doc Rivers had a sensational year. He really has.
Starting point is 02:03:07 That team plays on a string. They play so hard. You know, I'm watching last night at Oracle, it was really the Clippers game from the beginning. They control the game. Yeah. Start to finish. Look, I think Kevin Durant is going to take a whole bunch of meetings. I think the Knicks remain in the poll position.
Starting point is 02:03:24 I don't know anything about any kind of real tampering, but if the Knicks made the deals that they did without having any kind of assurances that Kevin Durant was going to go there, they are crazy. Like, they are just crazy. To offload Christophebs-Borzingis for nothing, basically nothing, and not have any insurance that Kevin Durant was going to go, that to me would be nuts. Great senior writer sports illustrated. He's all over the place.
Starting point is 02:03:46 the crossover podcast with Chris Manix. Now is doing boxing for Dazin. Is that right? DeZone, yeah. There's a lot of networks out there. There are. It's good for me, though. I've worked for half of them.
Starting point is 02:03:55 I mean, it's just the way it works, Chris. Great seeing you. Joy with the News. No, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the Herdline News. All right, we were just talking about those clippers. They pulled off the upset win last night.
Starting point is 02:04:09 Game 5 against the Warriors, beating the champs at home, 129, 121, despite a really strong performance by Kevin Durrance and a good performance by Steph Curry. Warriors could not close out the series, and after the game, Steve Kerr was asked about his team's identity, and this was his response.
Starting point is 02:04:26 What's the identity of our club? Back-to-back champions were really good. Okay. I mean, we're hanging banners. You know, what's our identity? We play fast. We play defense. I don't know.
Starting point is 02:04:42 Maybe we should do an instructional video later in the 17. That's a funny quote. He got a little testy there. Yeah. That's funny. That's funny. That's funny. What's our, what do you say?
Starting point is 02:04:56 What's our identity? What's our identity? We're winning hanging banners here? I mean. I like feisty Steve Kurt. Yeah, he's being a little feisty. He's flexing a little bit there. Probably, you know, we probably would not appreciate that from a player if we're being
Starting point is 02:05:09 completely honest. But I think it's fair to say, and I think Steve would admit this, their defense comes and goes. And I think they're thin. They play Looney and Iggy, and Iggy's not what he used to be. Goula, you're a diehard warrior fan. They don't have much of a bench. I mean, that's a fair criticism. They don't have much of a bench. You get a few good minutes out of Iguidala.
Starting point is 02:05:26 And by the way, once Boogie got hurt, they don't have a legit big. I mean, so I would just say their best team in the league, way more vulnerable this morning than a year ago. Yes. Yes. Which is completely fair. The identity question response is also fair because they are until someone takes them down, the champs. And I don't think as much as great as the Clippers have been playing in those two wins, no one feels like this is the Clippers series.
Starting point is 02:05:52 It's the Warriors series to lose. And no one feels concerned. What if it goes to a Game 7? Lord. When do they play again tomorrow? It would be great. They play tomorrow in L.A.? Holy Crow.
Starting point is 02:06:01 Okay. It would be great. But you're right. They are vulnerable. And I mean, I don't know how Warriors fans are feeling. I'm sure they're still feeling very confident. But I think that when you're looking into the next series, you have some questions going into it.
Starting point is 02:06:13 So, Bronx announced his retirement from the NFL last month, leaving the Patriots in the either of the tight ends. And Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman has an interesting idea for Bronx's replacement. We had this conversation many times about if LeBron James played in the NFL, what position would he play? And people often say tight ends. Well, Edelman posted this image on Twitter of Zion Williamson holding a Patriots jersey with the caption, Hey, Zion, we've got an opening at tight end for you, bud, just saying. Oh, there's no doubt he would be. he'd be a load.
Starting point is 02:06:45 285? But you know what? Football players, it's easier to play basketball. Basketball players don't like the physicality of football. Because Charles Barclay once said, he goes, I tried out for football one day. He's like, that hurts.
Starting point is 02:06:59 Well, I mean, basketball is a contact sport. Otherwise, we wouldn't value. They don't tackle you. No, no, you don't get tackled. But I would say the tight end position has evolved a lot. Like, you have to do, you have to be. If you're going to be, especially Gronk, kind of redefined the position as well, as being as big as he was, then being a blocking tight end towards the end of his career.
Starting point is 02:07:22 But it would be interesting. It's fun to imagine. By the way, Zion's got a nice little three shot when it develops. He does actually have a beautiful little jumper. He just needs to, you know, in college basketball, they're not going to let Zion shoot a bunch of those. In the NBA, he's going to get four or five of those a night. Zion also played one year. Yeah.
Starting point is 02:07:42 So he's going to get with a team and they're going to develop whatever skills they feel he needs to develop. And that needs to have. That's something that we were just talking about this in the draft. We evaluate these players coming into the draft, whether it be the NBA or the NFL based off of what they are right now and project them to the future. Take into consideration where they're going and what that team can do to develop you. Look at the Lakers with Angelo Russell. You got to develop players. It doesn't just stop once you draft them.
Starting point is 02:08:07 And finally, we were just discussing the Lakers. excuse me, it's been a rough few weeks of the Lakers organization following Magic Johnson's departure and of course Luke Walton moving on as well. There are reports services this that the way that the Lakers have handled all of this has caused a rip with LeBron James and LeBron set the record straight
Starting point is 02:08:26 with this video on Instagram yesterday. It's not true at all. I'm actually at the Lakers facility right now. All right, so LeBron's back in the gym. He's in a good mood. We know that. Looks a little thinner, by the way. Looks like he's taking off some weight.
Starting point is 02:08:46 Does he? Yeah, a little bit of his shoulders. His traps aren't his big. Yeah. I don't know. It's not a whole lot of views there. Well, Magic Johnson also tweeted this morning. The truth will always come to light with a very happy smiley face emoji.
Starting point is 02:09:03 So the internet is, uh... What does that mean? I mean, who knows? There's so much going on with the Lakers. Who knows what he's referring to? There's a lot going on this morning. I don't know. I, you know, we were talking about Monty Williams a few minutes ago and the Sun's job and the Lakers job.
Starting point is 02:09:20 And I don't think that either of them are great jobs at this point. If you are, unless you are Tailu and you're going into a situation where you've already gone through this experience with LeBron James and being in the limelight and getting all the criticism and stuff, like the Sun's job is not a good job despite the talent that they have because Sarver is still the owner and he is the consistent line in the complete dismantling. of a storied NBA franchise. And the Lakers can also not be a great job right now. The two things can be true. The Lakers have not shown that they're going in any particular direction. And we could all just be waiting to find out what's going on once the playoffs are over. But there's just a lot going on.
Starting point is 02:10:00 There is. Magic means on that tweet. That was weird. Joy with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. He's usually not subtle. His Twitter accounts.
Starting point is 02:10:12 It's usually very direct What he's thinking Literal direct And now he's I don't know That was weird Okay This is a very exciting time
Starting point is 02:10:22 Jake Glazer's around the corner I don't think I'm still I'm still rebounding from Being criticized for eating bugles Which are the delicious corn chips shaped like a bugle That you put on your fingers
Starting point is 02:10:34 And eat like a little kid You'd pretend they were horns It's remarkable The entire staff What flavor of bugle Doesn't matter There's ranch There's plain
Starting point is 02:10:42 They're just delicious. And high in optimism. You feel good when you eat one. It's like America. It points to the very top. There's so much going on there. Okay. Are the Cardinals going to pass on Kyler Murray?
Starting point is 02:11:00 It's crazy. This is so, I mean, literally, there's a story out this morning. The Redskins are not only disagreeing on if they should take a quarterback. Yeah, but the owner in the front office can't figure out which quarterback they like. I mean, it's so Washington. It is so Washington. And the Raiders are promised a huge surprise. Whatever that means.
Starting point is 02:11:18 Jay Glazer joins us next. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports Radio, FS1, and the IHeard Radio app. Okay, draft tonight getting all ready for this. Very exciting. Jay Glazer's been two and a half decades of drafts. Let's go via the Cower Global Satellite Network. NFL on Fox Insider, Unbreakable Performance Centers, founder of MVP, merging bets and players, also on the athletic.
Starting point is 02:11:49 How many drafts have you done? It's number 26 for me, but now I'm aging myself. Well, go back to your first draft. Who was the big star? It was 1991. You know what? My first drafts also were, think about this, they used to be in a ballroom at the Marriott-Markey Hotel in New York City.
Starting point is 02:12:11 there's like 400 people in there, 500 people. And now look at it. Nashville's been great. But, you know, back then, could you imagine that it would turn it to the reality show would become this big? No, I never would have thought about it. But it was literally, it was in a ballroom. Man, it was great.
Starting point is 02:12:29 It really was cool. Okay. Now, this year's draft, is it different in any way than other drafts you've covered? Yeah, this year's draft is different in a couple ways. Number one, usually teams have somewhat of. an idea when they do their mock drafts or what other teams are going to do. This year, they don't. They have no idea what the other teams around them are going to do. And usually, again, they do a little recon going up to the draft. We're all information brokers, whether you're a reporter like me
Starting point is 02:12:57 or you're with the team. So they have more of an idea. And then the other thing is usually these pass rushers, everybody wants to trade up for one of these great pass rushers. But in this draft, you could actually get pass rushers all the way out into the third round. So there's not a lot of rushers. You got Bosa up here and Quentin Williams, and then after that, there's a drop off from after that all the way down to the first, second round,
Starting point is 02:13:22 then again, you can get good pass versus all the way into the third round. So that's different. Usually, you know, teams will just throw anything they can to go up and get a good pass rush. By and large, to people like Nick Bosa as much as they did, his brother, Joey Bosa, as he were the, people like him. Yeah. Okay.
Starting point is 02:13:38 I think if the two were them in this draft, I think more teams would take Nick over Joey. Wow. And part of it, yeah, part of it too, he's been trained to do this from his dad. And then from Joey, he has more experience because he saw what his brother had gone through. So I just think he has a little bit more information. He's able to handle a little bit more differently. But Nick Bosa, man, I mean, Colin, there's a couple of guys in this draft that are just,
Starting point is 02:14:02 there's no marks on them. They're clean. And it's Bosa and Quentin Williams, there's no question marks about those two guys at all. Let's talk about Kyler Murray. I trust you on the Arizona stuff. I can't figure it out. I mean, it's eats. I figured they had, they were talking to Rosen during it.
Starting point is 02:14:17 I saw a story today that he didn't know what's going on. What is your gut feeling happens in five hours? I still, I think they take Kyleor Murray. Yeah, but I think they have to, you know, make sure certain other things fit there also. But also, they're in a situation where because of Josh Rosen's contract, they basically paid them already, the $11 million. or whatever it was.
Starting point is 02:14:40 So you're trading a guy with a three years left on his contract at $6 million. It's a great contract to trade. So they're looking at it going, look, we used the 10th pick last year. It's a great tradable contract. So why aren't we getting a top-to-year first-round pick this year? I know that some teams have offered picks that are outside the first round to write to them right now. That's not acceptable for the Cardinals. But I do think in the end, Kyler Murray, he's not just, look, Kyle Murray, we've never seen anything like him in the NFL.
Starting point is 02:15:09 We haven't seen a 195 pound or 200 pound quarterback. We also haven't seen a guy who's kind of Barry Sanders-like who can throw the ball. But what does he also do? You've got to look at it business-wise and makes them relevant, right? He makes them must-see TV right off the bed, right at the gate. And I think Kyle Murray's just, you know, he changes the landscape over there for the Cardinals. What is your gut feeling on Rosen? I mean, I think the Giants have a lot of draft capital with 12 picks.
Starting point is 02:15:37 They feel like a natural to me. think on the Giants perhaps. Let me just ask this. The Giants are going to take a quarterback. Which one would it be, including Rosen? Yeah, and that's the interesting part because they have to go back, and I was talking to one of them on the Giants the other day. I said, you guys got to go back to what your grade was last year with Josh, but then adjust it because of the contract. It kind of needs to go up because of that contract because it's such a great contract to trade for it. And then you have to see where do we have him in regards to some of the other quarterbacks, the Daniel
Starting point is 02:16:07 Jones, who I know they like, or, Haskins, you know, but this is, again, this draft is different even with the quarterbacks. There is no consensus besides Kyler Murray on these quarterbacks. There are guys, like some teams have Daniel Jones second best, some teams have them sixth, some teams have Haskins two or Locke two. Some team have them five or six. They're so all over the board on these quarterbacks. Usually you have a little bit better of an idea of these guys. I mean, they're so all over the place with these guys. The Raiders have said they're going to surprise us with their fourth pick. I don't even know what that means. What does that mean to you, Jay Glazer?
Starting point is 02:16:45 I don't know about a surprise with that fourth pick. I mean, I think the surprise would be Collarmerbitt. I don't think he's going to be there. So other than that, I don't see. I think that they're going to continue to, you know, look, we know they need pass rushers, right? We heard about it last year with Lil Mac. They need these pass rushers. They got to come out of this. They got to come out with pass rushers. And I know we talk about the Giants just now with their quarterback. They have to come out of this with pass rushers. They've got to get back to what made the Giants great when they were winning the Super Bowls. Raiders got to do the same thing. They've got to somehow generate a pass rush with this draft. With all your sources, you don't even have to be specific.
Starting point is 02:17:20 I saw New England moved up a couple times last year. They're looking for specific things. They've got 12 picks. That's a lot of picks. I kind of think they'll cobble a couple together if they found something they liked. I mean, do you have, do you think it'll be an active first round? I do. I think at one point it is because you're going to, again, there's nobody in this draft that everybody's in love with. So if you're in love with somebody, a certain team may say we have these six guys that we're in love with, and we're picking over here at 14 or 21 or 17, whatever it is. And also one of those top six or eight guys, they start getting close. I think you're going to have those teams move up three spots, four spots, whatever it is, just to make sure that they get one of those guys and what they think is somewhat of their top tier.
Starting point is 02:18:07 again, it's the craziest draft, and I know I've said it a couple times you already, it is the craziest draft with a lack of consensus on all these positions. Receivers, nobody consensus on them. DBs, no consensus on the number one guy there. Linebackers, you have the two Devons, we know that, but after that, man, there's just a huge drop-off. It's a wild draft. All right, Jay Glazer, Joel Klat, Chris Spielman, Rob Stone,
Starting point is 02:18:34 Fox Sports Radio, through the entire first round live, Nissan, stadium in Nashville. Great seeing you. Good luck tonight. Your 26 draft. Thank you, brother. All right. Thanks, Jay.
Starting point is 02:18:44 I'm old, man. I'm old. No, you've been covering them since 1991. Good stuff. You know, the number one pick, Joy, is, you know, we always do high-end, low-end on quarterbacks. That's a game we've played for the last several years, where we take a quarterback, and what's the best case scenario for a quarterback,
Starting point is 02:19:04 and then what's the low-end for quarterbacks? and we got three quarterbacks, Kyler Murray, Dwayne Haskins, and Daniel Jones. Those three, I think, feel like they'll go in the first round. I think Daniel Jones grades out to a second. But I thought Lamar Jackson graded out to his second round quarterback, and he went late first. I think that's going to happen with Daniel Jones.
Starting point is 02:19:27 So let's take Kyler Murray. High end, I think it's Russell Wilson. I'm not saying he's Russell Wilson, but I can see some Russell Wilson. low end, it's Johnny Mansell. Now, again, take out the addiction issues with Johnny Mansell. Johnny ran around a lot. Good arm, playmaker, tremendous in college, came from kind of a clever offensive coach,
Starting point is 02:19:53 Kevin Sumlin like Lincoln Riley. So to me, Kyler Murray, the high end is really high. The low end scares me. That's what I would say. The low end scares me. I think he plays at about a buck 90. I don't like that. Dwayne Haskins.
Starting point is 02:20:05 You know, high-end Drew Bledsoe. Now, I know a lot of you in your 20s didn't see Drew. Drew was not a mover and a shaker in the backfield, but he had a big old arm. He was big. He was strong. He could spin it. I think there's a little Drew Bledso. I think the downside is heavy-footed Byron Leftwich.
Starting point is 02:20:22 Byron wasn't bad, but if you gave him a little pressure, Byron just not a guy that could reset in the pocket quickly, had some moments. That's the high-end low end. The high-end's pretty good with Drew Bledso. If you didn't see him play, Drew could spin it. Daniel Jones, high-end, low-end. I think the high-end is kind of Kirk Cousins. He can be accurate.
Starting point is 02:20:41 I think there's a limited arm. I think he has some leadership qualities that I like about Kirk. I don't think he's a guy that can carry a team. I don't think he's a special talent. But again, you put him on a roster. He won in Minnesota. He's won in Washington. You can win games with him.
Starting point is 02:20:58 I just don't think he's special. That's the high end. The low end is Blaine Gabbard. Where, you know, Blaine and Daniel can both move around a little bit. I don't think they're special arm talents. Again, I feel like if you don't give them the right protection and the right receiver, they're not going to elevate. So the high end low end.
Starting point is 02:21:15 So the high end is Russell Wilson, Drew Bledsoe, and Kirk Cousins. That tells you, I think Kyler and Duane, if it pops, you could have a very special player. Well, based off of that, I'm taking Dwayne Haskins. Because Kyler Murray, I mean, that's a big swing there. But we got a root for interesting. And Kyler is interesting. He's rude for interesting. But I'm saying if I'm the one taking the pick.
Starting point is 02:21:38 All right. Tomorrow, Joel Clatt, Trent Dilfer, Reggie Bush. Very excited.
