We're digging into the biggest surprises of the season. And I'm looking back on some of my greatest playoff moments. If we didn't talk ever again, I was harmed. you just understood.
Starting point is 00:02:03 That's how personal it got. Wow. Then after that game seven, Mark keep coming to her. He's like, you know I love you, dog. You know, it's all love. This was just playoffs.

Starting point is 00:02:32 You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Ah, here we go on a Monday. Thank you so much in unique circumstances for joining us. Live in Los Angeles, this is The Hurt. Wherever you may be and however you may be listening, we are all over IHeart Radio. We are on Fox Sports Radio. We are on Sirius XM Channel 83.
Starting point is 00:03:02 And yes, though not in the studio, we are on FS1 for the remainder. of the week. Circumstances could change. We, as I said last week, hope to bring you some normalcy. One hour from now where Colin was right, Colin wrong, an NFL free agency edition. Joy Taylor is joining me. Now, you will not see Joy on television today. I can see Joy to my left.
Starting point is 00:03:26 Hello, Joy. Hi, Colin. Hello. On my laptop. I've got to give great credit to Joy, our company. I'm by myself in a studio. My family is doing a lot of social distancing. All of us are occasional power walks with my daughter, but social distancing.
Starting point is 00:03:47 I'm here in a studio by myself. We have a Spartan staff. Joy is by herself. Well, hell, I don't know if she is by herself, but I can see her right now. Okay. None of my business, by the way. I'm just saying. So I'm watching Joy.
Starting point is 00:04:01 And so let's just start today. again, Joy and I know in the big picture, our jobs are not that important, but if we can add some normalcy and some habit to all of your lives, you are doing me a great benefit. And I hope we're doing some benefit to you. So let me just start with this. I thought a lot about this morning. I thought a lot about the virus and sports, and it's obviously affecting everybody's lives, socially, business-wise. We now have a health crisis and an economic crisis at the same time. And this is not, as we've said for the last couple of weeks here, this is not a two or a three month thing. It's going to be a spring, summer thing.
Starting point is 00:04:41 Hopefully by late summer, early fall, we can get our arms around this and the curve flattened. Social distancing is a real thing. Please adhere to the regulations in your state or province or wherever you are. I do not believe we're going to have NFL OTAs. Those are in late May. I don't think it's going to happen. My opinion has always been. best case scenario is July.
Starting point is 00:05:05 That's why I crossed my fingers for the NBA, but I'm not very hopeful as I think about that this morning. So how does that affect the NFL? Because at this point, everything I'm reading, I do think we'll have an NFL season. And I thought to myself, Lord, what a disadvantage. If you're a new coach with a new system and new coordinators with a young quarterback and you can't meet.
Starting point is 00:05:29 what a massive disadvantage. In fact, let me give you a number. Last year, we had eight new NFL head coaches. Eight. One had a record of 500 or better, and that was with OTAs and with camps and with a full exhibition season. It is highly likely there's going to be no camps and we could even have potentially an abbreviated preseason. So for me, I look at Joe Judge with the New York Giants. New coach, new coordinators, Daniel Jones is young, big disadvantage. Kevin Stefansky Cleveland, smart guy. New system, can't meet with his players, can't implement it. Matt Rule at Carolina.
Starting point is 00:06:16 I think he's brilliant. And I love veteran Teddy Bridgewater. Unfortunately, no camps. Even if you're a veteran coach, Mike McCarthy, and a fairly veteran quarterback now. Dax's now, what, going to go into his fifth year? Disadvantage. Ron Rivera, who I think very highly of, with a young quarterback. I think Ron's excellent.
Starting point is 00:06:37 Big disadvantage. And I thought this morning there are really about eight or nine teams I wrote down where you've got a head coach who's been around, a quarterback who's got a couple of full seasons in him, and there haven't been a lot of what I would call coordinator changes or top assistant changes. Big advantage for, and let me read the teams, Seahawks and Niners, Eagles and Saints, Falcons and Ravens and Texans, and I think to some degree, the Rams.
Starting point is 00:07:04 But let me give you an example with the New York Giants. And I think they're getting better and better and better. But the Giants have a new head coach and Joe Judge, who's never been a head coach, and an all-new system, and a young quarterback. Think about the defenses they're going to play. Because it's much easier to implement a defense than an offense, right? Eagles twice, Seahawks, Niners, Brown, Steelers, Raven defenses. and the Bears and a Tampa Bay defense that played very well at the end of last year.
Starting point is 00:07:31 That's just bad news for the Giants. That is a decided disadvantage. So as I went through the standings this morning and, you know, as things change, the more they stay the same, I thought to myself, I'm going to pick the top two teams in each division based on head coach quarterback symmetry and a lack of major coordinator changes. I think I got this right. So in the AFC East, that's the biggest change. No Patriots.
Starting point is 00:07:58 Bills win the division. Jets second. I pick the bills over the Jets because, frankly, I like their coach more. Bills and Jets, though. Same coach, same coordinators, same quarterback. AFC North, Ravens first, Steelers second. Big Ben comes back, but he was off a year. Ravens have almost no new changes offensively.
Starting point is 00:08:21 AFC South, Texans, Titans, flip a coin. I like the Sean Watson more than Ryan Tannahill, so I probably go with the Texans over the Titans. AFC West, Kansas City should be an overwhelming favorite. And I would say the Las Vegas Raiders. Gruden's back. The band's together. Here's Derek Carr. Raiders, I think at least early in the season, it's an advantage.
Starting point is 00:08:45 In the NFC, Eagles Cowboys. Now, the Cowboys have a new head coach. I think that hurts a game or two. Eagles Cowboys would be my order. NFC North. Green Bay 1st, Minnesota's second. Minnesota's got a new offensive coordinator. Again, no OTAs.
Starting point is 00:09:03 Less time equals less preparation, equals less chemistry. NFC South, it's a big win for the Saints and the Atlanta Falcons. Not as much Tampa, Brady, and Arians, who I think will be productive, but I think it could get very ugly in early September. NFC West,
Starting point is 00:09:22 Niners have better personnel. I'd say they're one, Seattle second. Now, the Rams are unique where you get Goff and McVeigh, but they've had a lot of roster changes to key spots. They've got a new defensive coordinator. I think they have a new special teams coach. They have a new offensive coordinator. So I see too many, and Todd Gurley's gone.
Starting point is 00:09:42 So I think Niners, Seattle, have an edge because of continuity over the L.A. Rams. So I guess my point is, you know, and for the record, outside of the Patriots, When I list those standings, you know what's interesting? It's mostly the same as last year. It is mostly the same standings as last year, New England being the huge exception. Let me shift to this. By the way, 50 minutes from now, Colin Wright, Colin Wrong, NFL free agency edition. So Tom Brady's gone in New England, but it should be noted.
Starting point is 00:10:15 I said last week, I think what they're going to do is like Miami did last year. Create a culture or in New England's case, maintain it. not be very good at quarterback, and it's playing hard, playing to win, but losing, and knowing you're going to lose. So the Patriots, Brady's gone, but it's a $23 million dead money hit. That is so on New England. They have no quarterback, bottom three or four teams, no league in weapons. I don't think their defense is going to be quite as good.
Starting point is 00:10:51 Andy Dalton was on the market, by the way. Andy Dalton is better than Jared Stidham right now. And he's better than Brian Hoyer who they brought back yesterday. Why doesn't New England go after Andy Dalton? Playoff experience? Cheap? Better than what you have. Why? It's tanking for Trevor Lawrence.
Starting point is 00:11:14 Tanking for Trevor. Now, they're not going to call it tanking. Miami played hard. They created a culture. They won five of their own. last nine games in Miami. But they knew, ultimately, remember what Miami did before the season started? Joy remembers this. She lived in Miami a long time. We followed the dolphins closely. They started moving pieces, moving guys, creating a younger team knowing, hey, it's my first year,
Starting point is 00:11:39 Brian Flores, I got to create a culture. You don't have to win to create a culture. You don't. You don't have to win to create a culture. You go back to Belichick's first year. He was creating a culture and they were five and eleven. So if you look at New England also, Belichick looks at his schedule. For the first time ever in New England, it's ranked as the toughest in the NFL. They go to the Rams, they go to Seattle, they go to Kansas City, they go to Houston. They face the Ravens and the Niners and Denver's defense. Again, why aren't they going after Andy Dalton? He's cheap. He's better than what you got. Why? Ask yourself, how many teams next year in the NFL? do we know are going to be bad?
Starting point is 00:12:25 There's not many. The Jags also appear to be pulling a Miami of last year. They're thin at quarterback. They've traded top players. They're very young. Jags are not going to be a good football team. We know the Bengals have a rookie quarterback. They'll draft borough.
Starting point is 00:12:41 They have a second year head coach. The division has gotten better. Everybody's better. The Browns are better. The Ravens are better. The Steelers get Big Ben back. And we know they have the weakest roster. The Bengals will not be good next year.
Starting point is 00:12:52 whether or without Joe Burrow. The Jags will not be good. My guess is the Redskins won't be great. You know, Ron Revere is not a magician. At this point, Dwayne Haskins, you know, if they went 8 and 8 this morning, wouldn't we all acknowledge, wow, Haskins work.
Starting point is 00:13:06 This is great. Eight and eight would be great. So I think there's about three teams in the NFL, and I think keep your eye on the giant struggling because new coach young quarterback. But by and large, New England can play hard, accumulate draft picks, lose close games.
Starting point is 00:13:22 They're not very good at quarterback. They're not very good at weapons. Slightly worse on special teams. They go six and ten. They maintain their culture. They maintain it. They still outwork everybody in the room. They lose.
Starting point is 00:13:34 They don't have enough offensive weapons in an offensive league. And you look up in New England's losing a lot of 24, 20 games. Very interesting. Patriots never interested in Andy Dalton. That tells me they got a plan. and the plan is maintain the culture, player arsoff, 6 and 10. It's not going to be a lot of bad teams in this league this year. Not a lot of tire fires.
Starting point is 00:13:59 And you end up in the top six or seven pick. You get a quarterback because remember, not everybody who's at the top of next year's draft, Cincinnati's going to be bad. They don't need a quarterback if they draft Burrow. The Giants could be bad. They don't need a quarterback. They got Daniel Jones. Jacksonville is the only team this morning.
Starting point is 00:14:18 I wake up and think, going to be bad, we'll draft a quarterback. A lot of those bad teams are getting quarterbacks this year. Cincinnati's getting a quarterback. Giants just got a quarterback. If Duane Haskins works, if he goes 7 to 9,500, they're not drafting a quarterback. I think New England has a plan. I think Belichick thinks about everybody, and my guess is that's their direction. Joy Taylor is joining me on radio.
Starting point is 00:14:45 It'll sound the same on television. I get a seer. What a pleasure that is. You do not. You're going to have to live with that for a couple of days. Colin right, calling wrong, top of next hour. Coming up next, guests who was sniffing around Brady last week,
Starting point is 00:14:59 although the story was they didn't want him. A new story, yeah, they did, as late as late last week. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth?

Starting point is 00:17:21 This linebacker, this linebacker walks up to me. He goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her. What? Quarterback on office blue with 42. Hey, rep, my mama want you to wave at her. What? Where's she at? Hey, Miss Parker.

I know we all want normal.
Starting point is 00:18:55 Take control of your future now. Go to mycomputercareer.edu. Free career evaluation today, not rocket science. It's my computercareer.edu. Joy Taylor is, you can't see her today. I can on her laptop next to me. She's got a classic sunny list in Muhammad Ali picture, which was a fight in Miami that does stun the world.
Starting point is 00:19:14 Of course she does. She has a great Miami history, and I worked in Vegas. Sunny Liston, by the way, is, I believe, buried as you fly into Las Vegas, McCarron Airport, there's a cemetery. It's the last thing, the last piece of space that is not owned by the airport. You fly over the grave of Sunny Liston. Weird, odd note. I didn't know that.
Starting point is 00:19:35 Yeah, I didn't until about two years ago when I read about it. Kevin Clark in 10 minutes, Terry Bradshaw next hour, Melvin Gordon, former Charger now a Bronco, and Rick Stroud, who had a great story on Tom. Brady later. Raiders. So there was this story. It's down to the Chargers, which I sourced. Yes, they wanted Brady and the Buccaneers.
Starting point is 00:19:56 We broke the story on that. We got lucky. But as I said, somebody I dearly trust said, the Raiders were interested. Tom wasn't interested there, but they were interested. Well, according to Vic Tafer of the atlantic.com, he's very good writer, Vic Tafer. He said, the Raiders were not out of the running, regardless of of what you leave. The Raiders indeed sniffed around Brady as late as last week, according to the league sources. They never made him an offer, but some ballpark numbers were made known to him
Starting point is 00:20:26 at some point. So it's interesting. I thought, I like Derek Carr. Don't love him like him. I think he's a poor man's Tony Romo. But there's something there. But I was thinking this morning, I'm like, has there ever been a quarterback that we think is talented, Derek Carr's talented, has some skills. He's got skills. He's completing 70% of his throws, but gets less love from his team. And I thought, oh, wait, we've seen this before. This is Kirk Cousins in Washington. So Derek Carr has a losing record in Oakland, but he's got a winning season. And Kirk Cousins had a losing record in Washington, but he had a couple winning seasons. They are largely the same guy. Nice guys. Almost an awshucks quality. A competitive, feisty.
Starting point is 00:21:11 average arm, not great athletes, but can move a little, lower ceiling, high completion percentage, very coachable, but there's some doubters in the locker room among players. There's doubters upstairs that they have a low ceiling. And in the end, both tend to play it safe and underachieve shrink a little in big spots. They're the same guy. And a Gruden basically, one Gruden. Jay didn't like Kirk Cousins in Washington, and John Gruden in Oakland will say nice things,
Starting point is 00:21:46 but doesn't love him in Oakland slash Las Vegas. I think Derek Carr, who I like more than Kirk Cousins, by a smidge, not by much. They're kind of the same guy in this league. They're franchise quarterbacks. They work hard. Very accurate. Some of the guys in the room kind of roll their eyes. The executives like them don't love them.
Starting point is 00:22:11 Washington wouldn't sign cousins when they had a chance to a big deal. And you and I know this morning, if Gruden had to put pen to paper with Derek Carr, he wouldn't. So just a little update. The Raiders were more interested than Derek Carr than many are reporting. Bick Tafer, theathletic.com has the story. Here's Joy Taylor. Glad to be back with the news. This is the herd line news.
Starting point is 00:22:41 All right. So the Patriots have brought me. a familiar face back to the quarterback room. Brian Hoyer has reportedly agreed to a one-year deal with New England. This will be his third stint with the Patriots, so they like him a lot. And it will have a chance to compete for the starting job. So obviously, we know they have Jared Stidham and Cody Kessler. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:22:59 They're the other quarterbacks on the roster. Stidham beat out Hoyer for the backup spot last season. He's obviously the most experienced quarterback on the roster with 38 starts, but he was with the Colts in 2019, played in four games, started one, and had four touchdowns and four interceptions. Doesn't it feel like to you, Joy, that Belichick's going to play Stidem? Because listen, let's just see the kid with live bullets. Let's see if he can, I mean, I know what Hoyer gives me, I know what Cody Kessler gives me.
Starting point is 00:23:28 It kind of feels like Belichick's built up so much equity. Let's see if Stidham can play. I mean, he played pretty well in the SEC. None of us know what Sidham is, so you're absolutely right. They have built up a lot of fan equity in New England's with six championships in a 20-year run. Right. They should be a little patient with the Patriots and Bill Belichick. And I think for the most part, most Patriot fans are on Bill Belichick's side on this.
Starting point is 00:23:54 They're sad that Brady left, but they have the ultimate trust in Bill Belichick, which I can kind of relate to because, you know, when LeBron left Miami, and obviously these are, you know, two different circumstances, but it felt like the end of the world. And I will say a lot of Heat fans had undeniable faith in Pat Riley. Yes. You know, we'll have a little time where we'll struggle. But eventually he's going to build this organization back into what it needs to be and will be contenders again. So I think that that's how most Patriots fans feel. I feel like this is just another move, as you were talking about earlier, to establish culture. Brian Hoyer, other than Tom Brady, probably knows that facility and that culture the best.
Starting point is 00:24:32 So to bring him in with sit him there, you know, show him how to be. be a pro. If it ends up working out, we'll sit them. Great. If not, they're in a position like the Dolphins were in this year to be high in the draft next year and get a quarterback. I think six and ten next year and you play hard, you maintain your culture, but you lose close games, get you in the top six picks. Not a bad spot to be. No. And Patriots fans should be realistic about where they are this year. But we'll see about that. So wide receiver, Emmanuel Sanders, has a new home. He agreed to a two-year deal with the Saints, reportedly worth up to 19 million. He also reportedly spoke with the Cowboys and the Packers before landing in New Orleans.
Starting point is 00:25:11 Wow. I like this move for the Saints. Just give Drew Brees another piece. He obviously has Michael Thomas and Treyquant Smith, Yonsei Harris, Jared Cook, Tassam Hill there. It's a great situation for Sanders also. He could actually become the first player to play in a Super Bowl for four different franchises, the Steelers, the Broncos, 49ers. And at the Saints, make it back to the Super Bowl. He'll be with them, too.
Starting point is 00:25:34 And remember Joy when he played for the Niners this year, he picked up the playbook overnight. Like he literally walked in. Goulet, I could be wrong on this. Wasn't his first or his second game fairly productive. So this is a veteran guy that can walk in. You give him a little bit of an exhibition season. This is a really nice weapon for Drew Breeze. Yeah, I love this move for the Saints.
Starting point is 00:25:57 And I don't think that the Saints are going to take a tremendous step back. I will be interested to see how Drew Breeze is because, we talked a lot about this this season. That five-game rest period where he was recovering from the hand injury and Teddy Bridgewater stepped in kind of ended up being a blessing in disguise because his legs didn't look great at the beginning of the season. Yeah. No, obviously there's a whole other elements in play now with the coronavirus and what's going to
Starting point is 00:26:22 happen with the season when they're going to start. So that may also play a role. But I like the saints going into this year and I love this move for them. Finally, the International Olympic Committee has said they will not cancel the Tokyo Games this summer, but they are still considering postponing them due to the coronavirus pandemic. But both Canada and Australia have announced that they will not send athletes to Tokyo if the Olympics are not postponed and continue as planned this July. Both countries also called for the games to be pushed back to 2021.
Starting point is 00:26:52 Yes. The Japanese prime minister believes that delaying the games is unavoidable. And obviously, the U.S. holds a lot of power in a situation like this because, you know, branding power and everything else. So what the United States teams decide to do will be very influential on whether the games are moved to next year. But it's looking very unavoidable that they're going to be postponed at least for this year. Because even with, even if the pandemic is under control by July, athletes haven't been training. Yeah. And it's also the most global event in the world outside of the World Cup. We don't have a World Cup this year. So it's a global
Starting point is 00:27:29 event. I just don't. This feels like March Madness when Duke and Kansas announced they weren't going to play regardless of the decision. You're the IOC. I think you're up against the wall. I think they cancel it by some point this week. Well, they may end up postponing it to at least next year. Yes. Obviously, that has, you know, influence on how the games go moving forward.
Starting point is 00:27:48 But they're in the same boat as the rest of us all trying to figure this out as it goes. But again, it looks unavoidable. It's going to be at least postponed. Great stuff. Joy, good to have you back. Joy with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Hurd-Lie News.
Starting point is 00:28:01 Used to ride at the Wall Street Journal. Now at the ringer, Kevin Clark. He's outstanding. Brought to you by Mercedes, the best or nothing. By the way, I'm looking at your resume right now. So you covered the Knicks for the Wall Street Journal nine years ago. On his question, were you 11? How old were you?
Starting point is 00:28:18 Seriously. I was 23. Oh, my God. I got the job actually while I was in college at the University of Miami and kind of commuted back and forth. my last couple months of school. It was a very stressful, weird time, but it was worth it. You were writing for the Wall Street Journal as you're in college.
Starting point is 00:28:39 Folks, Kevin Clark is talented. He's never going to tell you. At 23 years old, I was wearing vans and pulling fire extinguishers off walls in high schools in colleges, so congratulations. Covering the Knicks is not much better than that. I mean, it is the Knicks. I hadn't covered a pro team at that point. That was a couple years later.
Starting point is 00:29:01 Oh, that's funny. So I was saying this last week, Kevin, all great coaches have a hole. I mean, you know, like even the best bands, you know, the best blues band is not doing maybe, you know, uptempo rock as well. Everybody's got a hole in their game. Belichick, to me, lacks warmth. I watch the two bills with Parcells and Belichick. And I think Parcells is incredibly, there's a hugable quality to him. He laughs at himself.
Starting point is 00:29:30 You know, he's very, very funny and snarky with the media, but he doesn't shut him out. And I wonder if there's a tad bit of Belichick regret this morning, him thinking, you know, I could have given him a hug once a year. Do you think Bill, is that is Bill capable of that, in your opinion? What's so strange about the situation, Colin, is that nobody is more adaptable and flexible on the field than Bill Belichick. But off the field, he does not have that same adaptability. And that's what I thought was interesting in the situation. It's that everybody I talked to for the past year where six months said, Bill's not going to change his approach to Brady.
Starting point is 00:30:07 It's going to be the same approach he has with every other player, Patriot Way, all this stuff. And I think that now, if he's thinking about it and reading this stuff, and all it would have taken is a couple of months ago or six months ago for him to say, here's a little more cash than normal, and here's a little more attention than normal. I think he has to regret that because he's now staring at Cody Kessler and Brian Hoyer and Jared Stidham and then maybe another free agent down the line. Maybe you're trying to experiment with maybe like his version of Tassam Hill, whatever it is.
Starting point is 00:30:36 None of these solutions in 2020 and he's obsessed with the team that he has to build every single year. None of these options are better than having Tom Brady back for a year. For the record, I do think Arians and Brady work, although if there's no OTAs and I doubt there would be, and I'm guessing there's an abbreviated exhibition season because I don't think this stuff has cleared up for a long time. I do think they figure it out and I do think Tom is productive. But I don't know. I was just talking about this to lead the show, Kevin,
Starting point is 00:31:06 Kevin Clark the ringer joining us, that there's a huge advantage if you have a coach, a quarterback, and an offensive coordinator that have played together last year or several years. How do you think the Brady thing works? I think they're productive, but Kevin, their special teams are always awful.
Starting point is 00:31:24 Some of this is just luck and attrition with injuries. The Saints look better. The Falcons, I think, they bring the band back. What is your gut feeling on how it plays in Tampa? I think it's a 10-win team, something like that. This is not Kevin Durant joining the Warriors here, okay? I mean, this is a pretty good team that was not ready to contend. He will change the culture a little bit, but he's not going to make some of those players better. Everyone keeps lumping O.J. Howard in with Chris Godwin and Mike Evans, like it's some sort of big three down there. That's not it. I mean, Mike Evans, He's a really good player.
Starting point is 00:31:58 Chris Godwin is too. Brady's going to be able to hit those downfield throws. I'm talking 13, 14, 15 yards to Bruce Ariens like. The reason that his average depth of target was down two yards per path the last couple years was because he didn't have anybody to throw to. Brandon Cooks wasn't getting open down the field because he was gone. Rob Grankowski wasn't healthy his last year and obviously he was gone last year. So I think he'll be able to work from a scheme standpoint, but I'm with you.
Starting point is 00:32:24 I think the schedule thing is going to define this. season. There's going to be no OTAs. It may be a limited training camp. There's already the CBA was going to take away about 12 training camp practices already. In 2011, when they put the training camp practice limits in place in the first time,
Starting point is 00:32:43 that defined that season. Coaches had no idea what to do. And you look at the teams that were good that year. The Patriots, obviously. The Giants won the Super Bowl, the Packers, the Ravens. It was veteran teams with stability and good coaches, because They knew how to adapt on the fly.
Starting point is 00:32:58 Belichick, by the way, that year, because of limited practice time, he went back to a more familiar playbook because he knew that the defense wasn't going to be able in 2011 to learn new defenses on the fly. It's that kind of coaching that is going to be really valuable this year. That's why I coach, quarterback, coordinator. I totally agree with you. This year is going to be very important because there's going to be no time to learn anything there. Wow, that is a great nugget by Kevin Clark of the ringer. The last time they shortened practices in camp, the veteran coaches, the smart guys, ended up winning.
Starting point is 00:33:36 I've heard, I love Chris Ballard of the Colts, but it feels like they're putting their problems on a credit card. They don't have a quarterback. I heard you like the Phillip Rivers things to the Colts. I don't. I didn't like giving up a first round pick. Now, that tells me Ballard didn't love any of the. That's what it tells me. It tells me Ballard didn't like any of these quarterbacks, right?
Starting point is 00:33:59 Well, at 13, yeah, because you're not going to get Tua or Borough or even Justin Herbert. And so I think Philip Rivers is the best available option. Now, he had the second most interceptions last year under pressure, nine. The problem is that he wasn't that good when the pocket was kept clean. The people I've talked to who I trust who are smart, they tell me that, you know, Philip Rivers is the worst person to play in a bad situation because he's always going to try to force it. He's not going to care about staff. He's going to say, okay, I'll just throw interceptions and try to put the team in my back if I don't have time to throw.
Starting point is 00:34:33 He's not going to throw it away like some other quarterbacks. He's just going to force it. And so now you put him in a situation with a good offensive line with a player like T.Y. Hilton, better infrastructure, better defense. I think that has a chance to work. I think the one year, $25 million thing leads them open to a lot of flexibility. I think they're going to be fine. I think DeForest Flucker on the other side of the game record. and I trust for Sparrow.
Starting point is 00:34:54 I know that you think maybe Ballard had a misstep here. I think that Rivers is the best available option here. He's probably a better option than Andy Dalton would probably be the second best option because you don't want to risk it with the James type or the health of Cam Newton or whatever. But I am supportive of this move would consider any other options.
Starting point is 00:35:16 And Brissette was not an option. Yeah. Kevin Clark, the ringer, does just a terrific job as viral stuff's a riot. I want to throw this out at you. There's a story by Vic Tafer, the Athletic says, no, the Raiders sniffed around last week. And I think Derek Carr's skill set, to me, is Kirk Cousins.
Starting point is 00:35:35 Not a special arm, not a special athlete, okay with both, play it a little safe, shrink sometimes against better competition, clearly good enough, accurate enough, high completion percentage, coachable enough to win games, even when a division if things went right. But there's a sense with Jay Gruden and Cousins, and John Gruden and Carr, I got to
Starting point is 00:35:56 we got to hit everything right to win big in this league. And I look at the Marcus Marriota signing with the Raiders. My initial reaction is, oh, he's a good backup. And then I'm like, I don't know if he's a backup. What did you make of that move?
Starting point is 00:36:13 I think I agree with you. I think Marcus Mariot is a guy you signed to have at least some competition in training camp. I think the problem when you sign these quarterbacks to mega deals and derrick car is signed through 2022 or they can get out of it he's going to make 19 million dollars in cash this year 20 21 million dollar cap hit the problem is not just the money the problem is you have to treat them like a franchise quarterback and then there's no more question
Starting point is 00:36:38 that's a mistake in derrick car's case it's also by the way a mistake in a lot of cases unless you have an elite quarterback and i'm saying top 12 you always need to be looking for an upgrade and so this idea that Derek Carr is some nailed on starter and he wouldn't try to upgrade. I think it's a mistake. I mean, I think, again, Marriota's a good quarterback. I would have even tried maybe to look at some of these more, these quarterbacks
Starting point is 00:37:01 who are expendable like a Cam Newton, like an Andy Dalton, these guys who are going to get really cheap because for the first time, really in what, 20, I don't know, and before any of us were born, there are more quarterbacks than starting spots. The supply is outstrip to demand. That never happens with quarterbacks.
Starting point is 00:37:17 If you're the Raiders and you don't have an elite quarterback. There is no downside of taking a flyer on one of these guys who's better. I think Mario does a fine signing, but actually they could have brought in more competition with the Cam Newton type or something like that. Because I just don't think you can win a Super Bowl with their car. And unless you can answer that question,
Starting point is 00:37:35 you always have to be looking. You know, a friend of mine in the culinary space, wine space told me a story about a month ago. He said wine, when Silicon Valley exploded, all these Silicon Valley guys wanted to own wineries. So they buy land, they have wineries, and he goes, the problem is now you have more wine than wine
Starting point is 00:37:53 drinkers in America. It's saturated because wine's been seen as this sort of academic and sophisticated sort of, you know, for people with a lot of money, you buy some land, you have a winery. And it is to the same degree like that with quarterbacks. So many of the college schemes being brought to the NFL are helping these college quarterbacks so much faster. Kevin, the whiff rate on first round quarterbacks. Paxton Lynch was a whip. Josh Rosen appears to not be what we thought. Boy, that's about it. Last five years, Kevin, to your point,
Starting point is 00:38:27 there's, I mean, once Cincinnati, Miami and the Chargers get solved, if Gardner Minshu hits, there's not a lot of openings, right? Yeah, it's unprecedented, really. When you think about, you know, 2013, 2014, 2015, and how many coaches had no idea where to do with quarterbacks, back and now it seems like you can find one anywhere and for cheap and exactly the reasons you're outlining which is the college players came in with better um better passing skills quite frankly almost the 10,000 hour rule. The Malcolm Gladwell talks about where they're playing in seven on
Starting point is 00:39:03 sevens when they're in middle school and high school they're throwing thousands of more times the generation of them and then these coaches now understand the teams the McVeigh types the Andy Reed type that wasn't happening five years ago when essentially you know your john fox types said, I'm not going to run college schemes. I'm going to run NFL schemes. And that really set quarterback back five, six, seven years. Coaches like Mike Malarkey with Marcus Marietta, they basically ruined the beginning of his career
Starting point is 00:39:32 by not understanding what to do with him. And that's just not going to happen anymore. And so the drafting a young quarterback is less of a risk than it was because you can put an infrastructure that he'll understand where he can make quick, easy throws at the very least. and you could make it work usually, okay? I think Josh Rosen, I agree with you.
Starting point is 00:39:52 You might bust a little bit, but I think you're going to have more success with quarterbacks in the life cycle, and if you're an Andy Dalton, you get stuck in the middle. Yeah. Kevin, you do terrific work. Thank you in a unique situation for us,
Starting point is 00:40:07 which I hope doesn't last longer than two months. My gut feeling is it could be a three, four, five months story, but thank you so much. Colin, I hope the next time I'm on with you, I'm not wearing sweatpants, okay? I can wear a shoot next time. That is my hope. Thanks, buddy.
Starting point is 00:40:21 Coming up next, the virus is difficult for sports, right? Complete stop. Starting point is 00:41:59 that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. And we're still chasing it, and we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth? Are you a good person because you're afraid?
Starting point is 00:42:19 Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Starting point is 00:42:40 What's up, guys? This is Clever Taylor the Fourth. And on my podcast, The Cliver Show, I'm bringing you. conversations about all kinds of stuff. Like being an internet famous referee. We're in the middle of a game. This linebacker, this linebacker walks up to me, he goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her.
Starting point is 00:42:57 What? Time out. Quarterback on office blue 42. Hey, ref, my mama want you to wave at her. What? Where's she at? Hey, Miss Parker. Listen to the clipper.
Starting point is 00:43:14 on the I Heart Radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. Hey, I'm Joe Dono. You might know me as that loud guy who yells out, help on the internet. Help! Somebody! Please! But there's so much more to me than me. I'm an actor. I'm a comedian. And recently, I've become quite the helper myself. And on my new podcast, Hope from a Hypocrite, I'll be changing lives, helping people in need with my sage advice and thoughtful solutions. Sike! I'm a comedian. I'm not qualified to give good advice. Join me and my comedian friends as we riff, rant,
Starting point is 00:43:49 recommend some of the most legally dubious advice known to man. If I'm calling you, even if you're on your phone, let it ring twice. One ring is too scary. Oh, cream a chicken suit. Hey, cream, cream a chicken suit. This is Help from a Hypocrite, the worst advice from the dumbest people you know.
Starting point is 00:44:09 Listen to Help from a Hypocrat as part of the Mike Coutura podcast network available on the IHart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome back. Good to have you in. Joy Taylor is joining us. Terry Bradshaw next hour. Rick Stroud, who had a great story. Tampa Bay, Bucks, NFL reporter. I've known Rick for 20 years. He's terrific. Melvin Gordon Broncos, good spot for him. So the league, the NFL is planning to hold the draft in a TV studio setting.
Starting point is 00:44:37 They're not going to hold it in Vegas where they were going to have boats, deliver players to the set. And I've got to tell you something. Every time in this country, we have had a crisis. We not only rebound, we're stronger than we were before. 9-11, I thought until this potentially was the worst domestic tragedy I'd ever seen. Airport security got significantly better. I think we're smarter with our travel now than we've ever been post-tragedy.
Starting point is 00:45:07 Listen, the NBA, this morning, I don't think, we're going to have an NBA season. I thought about it all weekend long. I don't think it's possible. Even if we go two or three months and then re-engineer it, those players may not have COVID-19, but they go back to families. And if one player test positive once you return, then you've got to test everybody. And I just don't think the NBA is comfortable in that space. Last week, they even closed practice facilities. But I was thinking about the draft. I'm not one of these people that complains about the halftime show at the Super Bowl. Because the Olympics and the Super Bowl are so big that they're really social events on the calendar.
Starting point is 00:45:47 My mom watched the Olympics. My mom doesn't like sports. My mom watched the Olympics. My sister will watch the Super Bowl. She's not a big sports fan. So I like these just Lady Gaga, these massive halftime shows and Olympic ceremonies that bring in casual fans. But it's also okay to have niche events that you don't. turn into a beauty contest for television.
Starting point is 00:46:11 It's okay to have the College World Series. The College Baseball World Series. It's just for college baseball fans. And the Frozen Four in college hockey. And the Coca-Cola 600. And it's okay to have the NFL draft and not have players have to be on boats and not have to make it for my sister.
Starting point is 00:46:32 I'm a draft dork. And I have been for 30 years. And it's okay in sports to a K. just have stuff for a college hockey fan and a college baseball fan. There's not a ton, but they're diehards. You go to the south. They love their college baseball. Don't try to water it down or beauty it up.
Starting point is 00:46:54 Make it pure. Coca-Cola 600. It's for NASCAR fans. Just let them have their fun. Let them have their day. Let them have their race. Last year I watched the NFL draft, and I've seen it the last couple of years. it's trying to get too cute.
Starting point is 00:47:10 Don't. ESPN does a great job with it. I think it's the best thing they do. I think it's the single best thing they do is the NFL draft, my former employer. They're terrific at it. Let them do it. Don't water it down. Don't make it for non-sports fans.
Starting point is 00:47:29 Let draft dorks have a weekend. One. Super Bowl, I get the halftime show. Olympics I get. These are massive 100 million people viewing social events. And I also think the NBA, I hope the NBA, Adam Silver, such a smart guy. I hope he looks at this. He's a very progressive thinker and says, you know what?
Starting point is 00:47:52 We're not going to beat the NFL in October, November, December. We're not legalized gambling is going to make the NFL stronger. We're not only taking on the NFL, we're taking on college football. The weekends are for football. And then in January, most of the teams are done. you go to the playoffs, then there's some openings. I hope Adam Silver looks at this as an opportunity. We start the season in Christmas.
Starting point is 00:48:14 You know, we wrap it up June 1st. We get to the playoffs. And, you know, we're done August 5th. Two days later the draft, two days later, free agency, whatever order that goes in or you want it in. And then six, seven, eight days before Labor Day, they hand it over to football. August is wide open.
Starting point is 00:48:34 July is wide open. see it as an opportunity NBA. Why are you giving July away? You kidding me? I'm a sports talk show host. I am dying for topics by July 3rd. Wouldn't it be awesome if the conference finals were starting then? And the finals are starting, you know, July 17th and then it's done?
Starting point is 00:48:58 I mean, this whole thing is real estate. And I think right now the NBA, this may force them to reexamine their, their properties. Grab July. Give up October November. Terry Bradshaw, Colin right, calling wrong. Next. One more herd. The herd streams 24 hours a day, seven days a week within the iHeart radio app. Search herd to listen live or on demand whenever you'd like. Last night, a blown call changed a game. Listen to Help from Hypocrite as part of the Mike Coutura Podcast Network available on the I-HartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Ah, here we go. Hour 2. We are live in Los Angeles. This is The Heart.
Starting point is 00:53:07 wherever you may be and however you may be listening. We're on all our platforms the rest of the week. We're on IHeart Radio, the Heard Channel, Fox Sports Radio. We're on FS1. We're on XM-Series, Channel 83. We're all over Twitter. We're downloading four and five segments of show. Our podcasts, thank you so much for listening.
Starting point is 00:53:30 Many of you are, you know, listen. In California, New York, which have always been our top two podcast audiences, numbers are way up. A lot of people are at home. Governor Cuomo in New York and Governor Newsom in California have very strict guidelines of not going out social distancing. So if we can add some normalcy to your life, you're certainly adding it to ours. Thank you so much. Joy Taylor is joining me. Joy is, I don't know why we don't put, well, I do know why we have a technical thing. So I get to see Joy.
Starting point is 00:54:01 And she's a very good decorator, by the way. I can see in her awesome place. She's got great taste. She is joining us. She just got back from Miami last night, and I imagine your flight was mostly empty. Is that my gut feeling on that? Yeah, it was about half full.
Starting point is 00:54:15 That flight across the country, I take a lot when I go back to Miami, so it's usually packed. So I actually expected to be less people than there were. I was kind of surprised, but it was interesting after the door closed. You know, sometimes if you have a row, you know, like an empty seat after the door closes, like, you can scoot over to the window or whatever. the flight attendant was literally walking up and down the aisle telling people like, hey, you know, there's an extra seat up here if you want to sit up here.
Starting point is 00:54:41 Like this row is going to be clear so you can scoot over if you want. I'd never seen that before because, you know, they don't usually encourage you to change your seat. Right. They were kind of trying to space people out a little bit. Absolutely. And the social distancing stuff, folks, it does work. The cities that have been a little slow to adapt to that, the local governors and mayors are paying a price for it. and clearly population density, New York City metro, Italy can add to the problems here.
Starting point is 00:55:08 So please take all this stuff seriously. Coming up, Terry Bradshaw, in 15 minutes. We do it every Monday. Now, there's not a lot of sports, and I'm not sure how many Mondays we can keep doing this, but we do have a free agent addition of Colin Wright, Colin wrong, and a Monday. Where Colin was right? Well, it was it Tuesday that we were six hours ahead of anybody. We got Tom Brady going to Tampa,
Starting point is 00:55:31 Bay. For the first time in my career, I broke an NFL story without an NFL source. It was somebody who plays in a different stratosphere. He knows Tom and he said he's all in. He's going to Tampa. You know, I thought to myself, well, I'm going to look incredibly foolish, which just happens from time to time, or I'm going to break Big J. journalism. So I kept texting, texting, texting, texting, and he lined it all up and everything he said was true. And we got the story on that one, which is, You know, nice job, everybody. Where Colin was wrong. The problem was I never thought Tom Brady was leaving New England.
Starting point is 00:56:09 I still think he would have stayed, but Bill Belichick stoned him on a phone call. Was very abrupt. That story's out now. They also couldn't land Stefan Diggs. I think Brady, as Albert Breer came on our show and said, he wanted to stay. He was going to listen. He was waiting to see what happened in that March 16th, 18th window. But I was really surprised, not shocked, but, I mean, in the end,
Starting point is 00:56:31 he's a creature of habit, and he just, he went from prep school, rigid New England to public-schooled, wild, crazy kids in Tampa. Before Tuesday, I didn't really think Tampa was a sight, so I whiffed on that one. Where Colin was right? We keep saying if the Cowboys love Dak, why aren't they signing him? Well, last week, they gave $100 million to Amari Cooper potentially. This goes back. I don't care what you say. I care what you do.
Starting point is 00:57:02 The Cowboys are paying running backs two years early, injured linebackers a year early, good receivers, not superstars Amari Cooper 100 million. They've paid everybody but Dak, I've always said. Those New England, Philadelphia road losses, zero touchdown drives, when Dak had significantly better offensive line running back in weapons.
Starting point is 00:57:24 Jerry Jones got on that private jet with Stephen flying home, and it just, they pushed the paw. button on it. So you can keep telling me everybody loves DAC, but I'm going to believe your actions, not your words, and Dallas has signed everybody but Dak. Where Colin was wrong. I thought the Colts were going to address quarterback in this draft. I knew Cincinnati was and Miami was and the Chargers were. I thought the Colts were, I don't really get the Phillip Rivers thing. I wouldn't have made it, but also they gave up a first round pick. to get a defensive lineman.
Starting point is 00:58:02 So the quarterbacks that will be left are not, to me, unless somebody pops and shocks the world, I don't think we're going to have a Drew Breeze in the second round. I love Chris Bowdo. I think he's terrific. But it does feel a little bit here like you're putting your problems on a credit card. You're going to have to address them and pay the bill next year. And again, I think the Colts are just too darn good with Philip Rivers.
Starting point is 00:58:24 They're going to be a 500 team, right? Well, they're not going to be. And nobody, you know, the teams that are going to, need a quarterback, Jacksonville, New England. I don't think they're moving down. So this move I don't get, and I don't love it. Where Colin was right? I never felt there'd be a big market for Cam.
Starting point is 00:58:42 It's smaller than I thought, but this goes back, you know, people are saying with Cam Newton, and I've never been a big fan. I think he's an average quarterback who had a spectacular year. You know, it's like the, who was the guy that played for the Baltimore Orioles years ago? Brady Anderson, good player, hit 50 Jacks one year. I mean, good players have great years. Cam's good. He's not great. Never has been.
Starting point is 00:59:04 Doesn't win enough. Not accurate enough. Gets hurt a lot. He's a little bit higher maintenance, but the media has been nice to Cam, forgiving with Cam. There's not much of a market. People say, well, you know, he can't get a physical. If Russell Wilson couldn't get a physical. If Lamar Jackson couldn't get a physical.
Starting point is 00:59:23 If Patrick Mahomes couldn't get a physical, you think they'd be unsigned? the reality is with Cammy at a small market, the physical, the virus doesn't help him, but most people in the NFL believe what I thought, which is great year, not a great quarterback,
Starting point is 00:59:39 older getting banged up, not worth much, and nobody wants to build around him. Where Colin was wrong. I keep thinking OBJ being traded by the Browns makes so much sense, but last week they came out and the new people said, now we're keeping him. I mean, Cleveland has major
Starting point is 00:59:57 line issues. You can't address all of them in the draft. And they have a major linebacker issues. I like their roster, but those are areas of concern. And they have more than enough skill people. They just got Austin Hooper from Atlanta at tight end. So they have David and Joku and Hooper at tight end. Jarvis Landry, two good backs. They may draft another receiver. They don't need OBJ. And Baker and OBJ completed only 55% of their throws. It doesn't work. ObJ tends to be a little bit of Adlibber. Baker Mayfield, when forced ad lib, makes too many mistakes. Cleveland appears to like him. It's not even their guy. They could move off this easily and say, we didn't bring him in. I keep saying this is going to happen. The past group said it's not
Starting point is 01:00:41 going to happen. This group they're keeping him. I don't get it, but I'm wrong. Where Colin was right. Kept saying last year, Todd Gurley Rams, don't buy into this. Don't, don't tell me. It's fine. It's a bunch of nonsense. I'm hearing it's not. It's not. I'm hearing it's not fine. Well, the Rams basically released him. He can still play a little. I mean, seriously, he's 25. He can play. And it's a $20 million cap hit dead money. How, if it's so great, why would you cut a guy in a position of need that can still play a little? He's still a great pass catcher at running back. And it's 20 million of dead money. And you don't have a lot of first round picks next few years. It tells you it got uncomfortable in the room. I'm not saying
Starting point is 01:01:26 Gurley's a bad guy. But he got his money. He got hurt and something changed. And the Rams were trying to sell this as it's, oh, we're just one big happy family. You don't release a guy. 20 million dead cap money who can still play a little bit, maybe more than a little, unless something was wrong.
Starting point is 01:01:44 Where Colin was wrong. Kirk Cousin got a two-year extension. I don't get it. 0 and 9 on Monday night football. 2 and 10 against winning teams. We know he's at least the third best quarterback in his division. Aaron Rogers and Matt Stafford are more talented. And Nick Foles is now in the division, and he was the Super Bowl MVP.
Starting point is 01:02:05 And is often better in big games. I like Minnesota. I like their front office. I love their roster. It's a Super Bowl roster. They've hit a ceiling. The NFC is only going to be better. I don't get it.
Starting point is 01:02:18 I thought they were moving on. And they've got, they're the kind of team that could move players and trade players and move up in the draft. No Jordan love I don't get it Where Colin was right You know we said a month ago Keep your eye on the Broncos
Starting point is 01:02:35 They're not that far off They went for their last five Last 12 weeks they were seven and five And had five one possession losses Well have you seen what they have done this offseason Melvin Gordon's in Jarrell Casey defensive lineman's in A.J. Boilley the cornerback is in
Starting point is 01:02:51 They think they're close as well I like this roster a lot I think it's much closer than people think. They're my surprise team in the NFL next year. And by the way, Bradley Cheb comes back with Von Miller, now Jarrell Casey. You don't want any part of that defensive line. I think Denver knows and Elway knows. We found our quarterback.
Starting point is 01:03:13 We're going all in. I think Denver's telling you, we're good. We're better than you think. We're going all in. And I think he's right. Where Colin was right? The Chicago Bears traded a draft pick and inherited two to three years of a massive Nick Foles contract. Why?
Starting point is 01:03:31 Translation, we're not giving Trabisky another contract. Folks, bear fans, you have a good team. But your front office whiffed on this one. They whiffed. It happens. Belichick whiffs. Just own it. All this is telling you is that,
Starting point is 01:03:53 Matt and Aggie and Ryan Pace, coach and GM are telling you, listen, we think Foles is a better thrower of the football. We like our weapons, and we've hit a very low ceiling. And we can't beat Aaron Rogers twice a year. And Matt Stafford and Kirk Cousins, if we got the fourth best quarterback in a division. So by giving up a draft pick and paying Nick Foles for at least two years, it's telling you, they're not paying Trabisky. They can tell you they're in on it.
Starting point is 01:04:17 They're not in on Trabisky. All right, good stuff. Terry Bradshaw is. around the corner. Great to have Joy Taylor back in, uh, this stuff is folks, uh, at least the next week.
Starting point is 01:04:31 I think we got stuff to talk about. Um, we are going to be challenged. Uh, Joy and I are going to be as severely challenged as we've ever been. But I got to tip my cap to our guest bookers. A Bradshaw, Rick Stroud, Melvin Gordon today. We'll get through it. I really seriously believe America's great at fixing problems. And we always come out stronger.
Starting point is 01:04:53 But we have a real challenge. Social distancing is real. Even you young people. It's a real thing. It's beyond yourself. It's about other people. Let's adhere to that stuff. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports

This linebacker walks up to me, he goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her. What? Quarterback on office blue 42. Hey, rec, my mama want you to wave at her. What?

Starting point is 01:08:55 Save three grand. I did. About a year ago. Terry Bradshaw is one of my favorite people at Fox, a Hall of Famer back in the 80s. You know, we talk about the draft. He was taken number one in 1970 by the Steelers and then played 14 years for Pittsburgh. Four-time Super Bowl champ, multiple-time Super Bowl MVP. And, by the way, this morning or this afternoon, wherever you're at, Terry, are you in Oklahoma?
Starting point is 01:09:19 you in Florida. Where are you? I've been Florida. Okay. Yeah. Florida. Yeah. You know, you played 14 years with one team, and it was mostly really a good story. Were you a tad shock with Tom going to Tampa? Oh, man. Yeah, I could say so, for sure. I was shocked when you left New England.
Starting point is 01:09:42 That made no sense after 20 seasons to be leaving New England. So what's the problem? right? Yeah. So there's a problem. You don't leave New England unless there's a problem. And so to me there had to be a rip. He's part of Belichick's demanding ways.
Starting point is 01:10:05 Belichick may have been tired of him after 20 years. That's very likely. You know, two people, from what I have heard, similar. Tom's real demanding, as far as the, It's a game plan and Belichick's real demanding as a head coach. So maybe it's best that they move on with their lives. Belichick will continue coaching, but I thought that Tom would never leave New England. That made no sense to me.
Starting point is 01:10:33 It's not a, you know, it's not a Brad Farr's thing when he leaves Green Bay because they had Aaron Rodgers. Right. And they were ready to move on. And five almost beat, you know, almost got Minnesota when he went to Minnesota into the Super Bowl, but they lost to the Saints. And then he went to New York, Jeff. You look at Montana going to Kansas City. He got them in the playoffs.
Starting point is 01:10:55 But they had Steve Young behind Montana. And then we looked at Johnny and I just going to San Diego. And that was just not necessary. John's career was way over and should have never done that. Name us and Nick and Burke Jones. There's various reasons why players move to teams. This is one that made no sense to me whatsoever. I did not understand.
Starting point is 01:11:23 One, they would do it. And I don't think I'm wrong. I think it's just a personal thing. I think Tom had enough of him, and Bill probably had enough of Tom. And Tom thinks, you know, he'll take his talent to Tampa Bay, and they've got great receivers. And the coach down there is an offensive-minded coach. He's been great with Rosalesburg.
Starting point is 01:11:47 He was great in Indianapolis. I mean, yeah, with the coach of the year there, actually, before going to Arizona. So Tom will go into a system that's going to be beneficial to him, and it'll have to be. But he's 40. Listen, eventually you say he is 43 years old. He is not a hard body. He's not someone that pounds weight. He does the flexibility and he does all those things.
Starting point is 01:12:16 I don't know what he does, but he's not a weightlifter. He's not a guy that can avoid the checks. He's good in the pocket moving around, but his athletic skills outside of that are pretty nil. He doesn't have much. His athletic skills are not very good. They've never had been very good. You know, Terry, it's interesting.
Starting point is 01:12:37 You know, Bill Belichick clearly lacks some warmth. You know, you had a coach who was a great coach like Belichick, a legend. Right. Didn't put his arms around you and hug you much. So I could make the argument, Terry, that you know, you know what that's like after 14 years and Chuck Knoll. Did it sometimes wear on you that you just occasionally you're a fun-loving guy. Tom's a family fun-loving guy and the coach never puts his arms around you.
Starting point is 01:13:05 It does wear on you. Yeah, it does, but I wasn't ever going to go anywhere. I was going to retire. Listen, I told my father, I'm going to play for one team and that's it. for nine years. If Chuck and I couldn't coexist, then I would have retired. I was not going to another team. I never wanted to go to another team.
Starting point is 01:13:25 And, you know, they're both denying the risk. Come on. It just makes no sense. Right. Common sense tells you that probably both of them needed to step and to move on. But not like this. I just thought the time should retire. or stay there in New England.
Starting point is 01:13:47 I, my, listen, if you apply the ego to this, Tom Brady probably, and we all want to be told how great we are. I'm not going to lie, do you. I would have loved to Mr. Whoop we can't live without you. You're the best. You're everything we ever needed in a quarterback. But, you know, that's just childish and immature.
Starting point is 01:14:07 You just, that's not something, you grow to understand, I know I'm good. need to be do by a head coach. And I just think that this is, this is unfortunate. I just do not, and I'm not saying, I don't want it to work. I'm just saying, I just think this is unfortunate.
Starting point is 01:14:28 Yeah. I never thought Brady, Brady would, would move on. But obviously, he's, if he would tell the truth, he would tell you, they know, if Robert Kraft and Bill Belichick would have come back, would have come out and said,
Starting point is 01:14:42 we got in love with a need you, we love you, we love you, We're no team without you. I'm sure he would have stayed. Maybe you're right. Colin, maybe he needed some love. I mean, you know, it's, listen, it's, you know, athletes are different. You know, and people, by the way, are different. I was different in my 20s when I was single than when I had kids and was married.
Starting point is 01:15:04 And, you know, Tom has maybe evolved and Bill's not going to evolve for anybody. And then, you know, stuff happens. You know what's funny about this stuff, Terry? I don't remember. So my theory on this is the teams that have an advantage, because we're not going to have OTAs with this virus, we're just not. We may have a very abridged preseason. I'm hoping we have a season. I think the NBA season's not going to happen.
Starting point is 01:15:29 But I think about this. When you don't have OTAs and you have an abridged camp, it's going to be a big benefactor to the veteran head coaches and quarterbacks that have worked together. Like Pete Carroll and Russell Wilson, you know, that Doug Peterson and Wentz, now of three or four years. Go back. Now, that's my gut feeling. But go back to when you played. Does an OTA matter?
Starting point is 01:15:52 Does it can't matter that much once you've worked together for a while? No. No. No, not at all. I didn't need, we didn't have OTAs. We had a quarterback camp. We were in, we came into town after the draft for four days. And even at the end of my career, I opted out of that.
Starting point is 01:16:13 I didn't need that. So, you know, you don't. Again, and football team are a veteran head coach and a veteran quarterback and people in place. And most of these guys in Tampa, for example, we're going to talk about Brady. They won't need OTAs. I mean, they'll need two seasons.
Starting point is 01:16:34 They'll have to learn the offense. He'll have to, and he will, you're a smart man. He's got a coach down there that's going to help him. they'll have to adjust their offense because he's not someone who's going to be able to hold the football and he will pick up on this. Now, they'll say, well, we've got to get a timing together. You don't need their timing together. The guy runs a four-sixth.
Starting point is 01:16:56 He runs a four-sixth. You don't need a work time. He runs a four-three. You've played with players like that. And that's real easy to adjust. This whole thing about I've got to get used to my receivers has nothing to do with timing. It all has to do with routes. And whether they break it off at 10 or 12, that's the critical point.
Starting point is 01:17:17 Whether they run a quick post at 8 or 12. Whether they do the break to the corner at 14 or 16, these are the little things that you pick up on, and they're not that hard to adjust to at all. You know, you're one of the most social people I've ever met in my life. You love people. You love being around them. Has this social distancing been talking about?
Starting point is 01:17:41 for you. I can't believe he said that. My daughter's here with me and her husband and the grandkids and their, they're homeschooling. So the teacher's here. And my wife, we were sitting having coffee this morning. And my daughter goes, no, Dad, we don't ever have to have conversations with you. Why is it? She said because you just start talking and you'll say, what do you say? You say you want to play golf today?
Starting point is 01:18:17 Okay, we'll play golf today. We'll play golf. What do you think about two o'clock? I don't care to play about two o'clock. Now you go to this and you go that. What do you say? Y'all like that? I make's a good idea.
Starting point is 01:18:25 And they said, you just talk. I know. And now, well, the good news is you got your family around you. So that's the good news. Yeah, I am lucky in that I have my wife, one of my daughters, got a grandkids here. and my one son-in-law went back Sunday
Starting point is 01:18:45 and then I talked to my other two girls and I said, look, we'll get you down here. If we're stuck down here for a couple of weeks, we'll get a plane up there and get you down here so we can be together. So it's been, and you're looking, it's tough on me, it's tough on, it's tough on everybody.
Starting point is 01:19:05 And it goes, you know what it happens, Colin? And the longer this goes, the scarier it gets. And then you say, you know, how do you respond to this? Let's some scary stuff. What's my reaction? Well, we went and worked out this morning, Tammy and I did. And we're outside. We walking forever and we're around no one.
Starting point is 01:19:24 And so that's cool. When we've gone in and had to go in to get food, we've done it same way. We're very careful. Other than that, you're exactly right. You can't go out and talk to my brother on the phone while ago. He said he might come by in a couple of days pretending. So everybody's just sick and it's good to sit. But I've seen head coaches quit football and say,
Starting point is 01:19:54 I'm going to spend more time with my family. And a year later, they go, well, I'm back to head coaching. Why are they back to head coaching? Because that quality time with their family drove them back. Yeah. But you know, thank God for the NFL draft because I've always been a fan of the draft. You were number one, 1970. It was a whole different world. So this year, they're going to do it. They're going to mostly do it on the phone this year. Tell the story you've told it before. Tell the story of where you were, which is unbelievable, because your games weren't on TV.
Starting point is 01:20:31 very limited Terry Bradshaw, all these major U.S.Cs in Alabama's and Texas and Oklahoma and Nebraska, and you get drafted, number one, that morning tell the story of when you got the call. Well, I did not know my father got a phone call from George Hallis at 4 a.m., saying they were trying to make a trade with Pittsburgh, and they were going to draft me. Now, I got up earlier, I got dressed, got my truck. got my boat out, got it all loaded up. I was headed out of the driveway in my parents' house. I was going fishing because the sandbass had schooled up on Toledo Ben,
Starting point is 01:21:13 and I knew where those band bars were, and I was going fishing. And Mike Phipps and I used to fish in the off-season together. So I'm going fishing, and my dad came out. I was backing out, and my dad says, where are you going? I said, I said, I'm going fishing. He said, you can't go fishing today. I said, well, why not? I told him that sand bars
Starting point is 01:21:34 sand bath that schooled up and so and so forth. And he says, I got a call from George Halleck and they're trying to make a trade with Pittsburgh and take you at the first pick. And I went, Dad, you know, really? Come on. That ain't
Starting point is 01:21:51 got to happen. I figured third, fourth round at the best. And I figured New Orleans because they had spent all this time with me for two years. Never heard it. Fitzford, never heard of Chicago. And I didn't know anything about the draft because, quite honestly, it was, hell, nobody knew about the Louisiana Tech. But, you know, I was certainly aware of it, and I knew the draft was coming up, and it was going to happen that day.
Starting point is 01:22:21 But I had no idea that it was that big a deal. That's why I was going fishing. God. That's incredible. Well, it shows you out, by the way. That's a good story. No, it shows you. how talented you were that people didn't even have tape on.
Starting point is 01:22:33 Everybody gets everybody at these big schools, to some degree, feels like they're overdrafted. To be number one, playing, never play a TV game is remarkable. He's a Hall of Famer since the 80s. Terry Bradshaw, best luck to you and your family, and I hope we talk soon, Terry. Okay, so let me just call me. Look, I'm just here for you, buddy. You know, I love you. Just call me.
Starting point is 01:22:58 You never had me on the show. You've had to have me on your show. show at the Super Bowl and I appreciate that but every now and then it just makes this feel good when I'm on the show. There you go. All right. All right, buddy. I'll sing a song.
Starting point is 01:23:12 I swear I will. I'll tell some jokes, whatever the cake. I'm here for you and you know it. I know it. We've never needed your talent. Are you at home? No, I'm at this radio studio in L.A. and Joy Taylor's in her house and, you know, we're making, you know what?
Starting point is 01:23:27 You make, you just figure it out. That's what you do. figure it out. I know. Crazy. All right. All right, buddy. All right. Well, I'm right here. All right. All right. All right. Just read Psalms 23 every twice a day and you're going to be in good shape. Okay. That's my that's what I'm passing on to you. Okay. Psalms 23 twice a day. All right, Terry. Thank you. Read it. Read it. Read it. All right. All right. Thank you. All right. Got to go find one of those. Here's Joy Taylor with the news Turn on the news
Starting point is 01:24:04 This is the herd line news You know that Psalm Kong Yeah The Lord is my shepherd I'm sure you grew up in a Your household was I went to church a minimum Of four times a week growing up
Starting point is 01:24:20 And you still remember that Yeah I mean it's it's I tried to read the Bible every day But you know And you know that one too And you work with me. That's a mark. You've got to stay centered.
Starting point is 01:24:32 All right. So Nelson Agalore has reportedly agreed to a one-year deal with the Las Vegas Raiders. He will join a wide receiver group of Tyrell Williams, Zay Jones, Hunter Renfro, as well as tight ends Darren, Duran Waller, who had a great season. And now, Jason Witten. He spent the last five seasons with the Eagles, and he had a knee injury last year that kept him out of five of the last six regular season game. But while this is an interesting space for him to go, I'm actually looking more towards the Eagles end of this
Starting point is 01:25:04 because obviously he had an injury that, and they had a ton of injuries last year. They're going to upgrade their wide receiving court. There's no question. They got a lot of things going right. They could draft two to three receivers. To me, that's their weakness. Yeah, so they have the 21st pick in the drafts
Starting point is 01:25:20 and mock drafts for the Eagles. No, you love mock drafts. Love them. So CBS has Jerry Judy from Alabama. Bucky Brooks has Henry Ruggs from Alabama and Daniel Jeremiah is saying Justin Jefferson who is the wide receiver from LSU going to the Eagles. Yeah, they're all good.
Starting point is 01:25:39 But they are likely going to pick a wide receiver. Yeah, I mean, they're a team that has one primary weakness. They're just not fast enough at wide receiver and they're going to change. And Wentz has a great deep ball arm. So they got to fix that. Well, I think this last season really no one judged what happened with the Eagles because they were just decimated with injuries.
Starting point is 01:25:58 But I thought it was a really good look for Wentz, at least for me, because, you know, I think Wentz is incredibly talented. But, you know, he's had some injury problems and, you know, there's been some questions there. And I thought the way that they finished the season and the way that he put the team on his back was just really impressive. So I think they're going to be much improved next year. So defensive tackle Gerald McCoy has agreed to a three-year deal with the Cowboys. That last week, he grew up watching America's team and said it was an easy decision for him to head to Dallas. Overall, I mean, it's the star.
Starting point is 01:26:32 I grew up two and a half hours away in Oklahoma City. Some portion of everybody at some point supported the Dallas Cavalers because it's all we had. It's almost like a dream come true to play for a team that I grew up watching. Kind of an interesting angle. We don't hear that too much in the NFL about guys wanting to specifically go to a team. They grew up watching. I feel like that's more of an NBA thing.
Starting point is 01:26:57 Yeah. But it's also, you know, he just came off of a single season with the Panthers. And he obviously had an incredible career with the Buccaneers and nine-year runs, six straight trips to the Pro Bowl. Dallas needs him. I mean, to be honest with you, that's, that's, it may, he may not be a great player anymore. Dallas needs him. Well, he definitely adds, he adds some depth also.
Starting point is 01:27:18 He has a relationship with DeMarcus Lawrence. And he also knows Mike McCarthy, who coached him at the Pro Bowl. Their learned defense last year, according to Pro Football Focus, was 12th. and then there were ninth in total defense. So they were on the higher end in the league, but he's a nice veteran add to the Cowboys, so I like that signing. Love this story.
Starting point is 01:27:38 I think you will too. So we talked a lot about this when the XFL first came to be, about what it was going to develop into. Obviously, the XFL and all sports are off right now. But one of their standout players found a spot in the NFL. Houston Roughneck's quarterback, PJ Walker, who is the standout star of the XFL this year, has reportedly agreed to join the Carolina Panthers.
Starting point is 01:27:58 Oh, that's great. The roughnecks won all five of their games this season with Walker as the starter. He led the league with 1,338 passing yards, 15 touchdowns, and four interceptions, including 99 rush yards and one rushing touchdowns. So he will be joining Teddy Bridgewater in Carolina. And he also was Matt Ruhl coached PJ Walker when he was at Temple. So they have a relationship there too. But I love this.
Starting point is 01:28:25 This is what we expected and predicted was that the standout stars in the XFL are going to find a way into the NFL. It's just more motivation for guys in the XFL to play at a higher level. It's going to be higher level football. I thought the X-FL did an incredible job this season. I'm sad that it had to end soon, just like everything else that's going on. But they'll be back again next year, and this is a great sign. And it kind of felt like this was heading that direction anyway, watching PJ play. But I love this.
Starting point is 01:28:48 Yeah. I actually think the skill positions in the XFL are pretty good. Line play, if you're a good lineman in the NFL, you're not. You're not there. You're in the NFL, but I like it too. Joy with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by.
Starting point is 01:29:02 The Herd Lye News. Coming up next from the Tampa Bay front office side, Rick Stroud's been covering the Bucks forever. Great stories on what unfolded, not in New England anymore, in Tampa before Tom Signed. Next. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd

Rick Strouds's been covering the buck since 1990. Perkins finally year his head coach, a reporter for the Tampa Bay Times, a guy I've known for a long time, a total pro. Had a great story this weekend from the Tampa Bayside, and he's joining us now.
Starting point is 01:33:05 Let me start with this. Was Tampa, we weren't hearing about Tampa, but you know the general manager, Jason, Alight. Was he confident two weeks away? I think he was, Colin. I think they all were. I mean, we were at the Combine, you know, and Bruce is probably not a great poker player. he was asked about, you know, as a player out there,
Starting point is 01:33:27 free agent, that you will answer the phone for you. And he, you know, he obviously said Tom Brady kind of tampered with it. But even before that, at the Super Bowl, they were doing, you know, all their, you know, scouting reports on guys, and they knew it was a spectacular class of free ages. But they just had a sense, having followed them through the year, and knowing what they had on their roster,
Starting point is 01:33:47 that Brady would want to leave New England, which many teams didn't think he would, and that he had talent here. that he would be attracted to. So that's certainly where they started from. What was the interview like over the phone or was it in person? It was over the phone. He was in New York and the day that they could finally talk to him,
Starting point is 01:34:06 they talked to him that evening. I guess it was Wednesday. And they were just hoping to make a really strong pitch and thought they would have to sell them. And it turned out that he was almost trying to convince them they should do this. I mean, he had looked at the team. He knew everything about their players, about even how their defense had played the last.
Starting point is 01:34:23 few weeks. He was well-schooled on a lot of things, excited about being in Bruce Ariens' offense. And, you know, it was interesting. He didn't ask for anything. You know, there were stories about, you know, him wanting control the offense, and he knew it would be collaborative or, you know, players that he would want to play with. He didn't even ask for the number 12, Colin. But what he did ask for at the end was one thing. He wanted the phone numbers to all his new teammates. And when I got off the phone, they looked at each other. They were like, you know, this is, it looks like we got ourselves as a quarterback. Wow. By the way, Bucks were seven and nine.
Starting point is 01:34:58 I thought their defense played really well down the stretch. How far away are they? They're not that far. I mean, they were seven and seven at one point. He really looked like James Winston might have a chance to come back. You know, he played with a broken thumb. They had lost Evans and Godwin, and he threw for 456 and 458 against a bad Detroit team. Then the last two games kind of cinched it.
Starting point is 01:35:18 And, you know, when you have a quarterback that throws 30 interceptions, five lost fumbles, and 120 points off turnovers. I mean, that's the difference, right, between seven wins and maybe 10, 11 wins. And that's what Bruce Ariens felt, that the defense was growing up fast. And if they could find a way to not turn the ball over, they got so many good weapons on offense
Starting point is 01:35:38 that a guy like Brady will help the whole thing and change the culture of the building. How's the Bucs O line? We know they're deep at tight end. They have some nice young secondary players, linebacker I like, great receivers, okay at running. back, probably need another one. How is their own line?
Starting point is 01:35:57 They have to get a right tackle. I mean, DeMar Dodson is an 11-year guy that's a free agent. They'll have to improve that for sure. You know, some people aren't thrilled with Donovan Smith. I think he's probably an average left tackle the better at times. But, you know, Brady makes your offensive line better for sure. I mean, he will throw the ball away, especially at this age. If somebody wins, you know, wins right away off the line of scrimmage. So I think that they're pretty good, especially inside, especially at his feet where it matters, right? And he can see the rush from there. But the blind side is where they're
Starting point is 01:36:27 going to have to shore it up. So I think they'll improve that. They pick 14th, Colin. There's some offensive linemen in the draft. That wouldn't be surprised they got one. By the way, how did those guys keep it a secret for two or three days with Brady? I don't know. I mean, I think it, you know, it's going to be one of those things. There's a backstory somewhere that they were on to it. But I'm not really sure when they called Donald Yee, you know, the first time, I guess, on Monday. I mean, we all No, we're not naive to think that there aren't conversations with intermediaries and things like that. But he didn't mention money. I mean, they just, again, it was just one of those deals where they really felt like Tom Brady was going to leave New England.
Starting point is 01:37:04 And with Bruce Ariens especially, I mean, here's a guy that had Ben Ruffisberger and Peyton Manning. I think, you know, obviously Tom picked up the phone and knew who to call with respect to the coaches that are here. So I think that was a big part of it as well. The winning percentage in franchise history is like 38, 39 percent worst. of any pro sports team, but I found when I was there incredible passion. This is not Jacksonville.
Starting point is 01:37:29 Is it still there? Is it still a passionate NFL market? It is. It's just been depleted. I mean, 12 years, no playoffs, right? It's hard to sell that. I mean, and their band base, you know, the ticket band base probably went down around 20,000. Colin, you remember what this place was like in the Super Bowl years, the
Starting point is 01:37:45 years before that. It was rock, and you couldn't get a seat, and it wasn't the other team that was filling the lower bowl of the stadium. So I expect that to happen. It had a 7,000 ticket waiting list on Ticketmaster the first day that he announced that he was going to come to the bucks and their jersey sales are up 900%. I mean, this place is alive like you haven't seen it since. And that was the thing, right? They're relevant now where you're talking about them. The nation's talking about them. Congratulations, by the way, for letting everybody know
Starting point is 01:38:14 that Brady was coming to Tampa before anyone else. But yeah, it's exciting. You know, you know this place. It's a football area. obviously, and so it should be fine. By the way, Ariens, about a minute left. I always thought, you know, Bruce didn't have long to go. I wonder if this extends, energizes Bruce and keeps him around for the next three years. I think it will. I mean, look, he's done a nice job.
Starting point is 01:38:37 He's done some things to change what, you know, to his health. He's put a lot more on Byron left, which in his coaches. You know, he's more of a CEO. He still, you know, gets off his feet at practice and does some things. He's got some health issues that he's addressed. But he is really. reinvigorated and this will just even make it more so because I mean think about the resume that he can put with the quarterbacks he's had rothusberger and manning and now tom brady it's just incredible
Starting point is 01:39:02 yeah they've got jason the GM has done a nice job offensive skill they they need a running back to me and a right tackle but uh i think they're ready to score points rick stroud who i've known for a long time a total pro bucks reporter tampa vat times thanks for joining us on short notice rick great talking you calling you calling you're calling thanks a lot you bet uh upgrade to the wiper blades trusted in bad weather. Michel and Endurance XD silicone wiper blades. Two times longer than other blades, available only at Walmart. We're heading into the spring, spring weather.
Starting point is 01:39:33 By the way, we had a long stretch, Joe. I don't know Miami was like. It was raining for five, six straight days. How was Miami's weather? Hot and sunny. That's why I saw those spring breakers out there, not social distancing. Yeah, the spring breakers got shut down, thankfully. Good Lord, folks.
Starting point is 01:39:49 Take it seriously. hour three is around the corner. Melvin Gordon, former Charger, really good kid, former Wisconsin Badger, L.A. Charger, now to the Broncos. That team is loaded and ready to go. I would love to see all those new pieces get into OTAs, but I don't think we're going to have them. I'll have some thoughts as well. And what I think the NBA is facing, I gave it a lot of thought yesterday.
Starting point is 01:40:15 I mean, listen, you got time, power walks, go to the grocery store, eat, nap, You've got a lot of time to think about a lot of things. That's coming up next. Thanks so much for sticking around. I want to thank Terry Bratchell, Ritch Stroud, and Kevin Clark. Melvin Gordon's around the corner. We are live on Fox Sports Radio.
Starting point is 01:40:32 Hour 3 next. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports Radio, FS1, and the IHeard Radio app. Ah, here we go. Live in Los Angeles. This is the Hurd's. heard wherever you may be and however you may be listening we're on iheart radio fox sports radio and fs one all of our platforms by the way fellas my uh radio cord here just broke you'll have to get me
Starting point is 01:41:07 another one because i can't hear anything joy i can see your lovely face and your beautiful house condo whatever it is but uh there we go something there we go keep wiggling it around it's not working. All right. So it's a different time, Melvin Gordon in 15 minutes. Joy just flew back from Miami where she said the flight was about half full. I know there's some anxiety, Joy, for most of our audience and myself. I'm pretty good in an isolated space. I'm pretty good. Are you pretty good in this sort of isolated world now we live in? Yeah, I mean, this is basically my normal routine. I work until about 2 p.m. every day and come home, take a major nap, get up, eat. And go work out and come back and either watch whatever sports is on that night or Netflix.
Starting point is 01:41:56 So during the week, this is pretty much my normal routine anyway. I have very limited contact with people. Right, right, right. But it's just the anxiety of it. You know, when you have the option to go out, it feels a little easier to say, you know, I think I'll stay in and relax tonight. So it's just that. But it's just if everyone just remembers that this is all temporary, then it's all going to be. going to be fine. You're going to have your spring break one day. You're going to have your
Starting point is 01:42:22 summer. We're all going to get back to normal eventually. It's just temporary. We'll all get through it. We just have to all do it together and we'll be fine. I want to start, thank you, Joe. We'll start with this. Seth Wickersham's a very good journalist and he has these stories where he gets all sorts of insight. And I was reading his story on Tom Brady. And I'm going to read you verbatim a couple of sentences here. He says Brady was deeply dissatisfied. After that Super Bowl lost to the Eagles, he put up 600. and 13 yards and no punts. Belichick addressed the team upon its return to Foxborough
Starting point is 01:42:54 and Brady mostly stared straight down, barely glancing up at his coach. Brady told people in the building that day he wasn't coming back. Needing distance, he detached from the team in the spring, left passive aggressive comments on social media. He pleaded the fifth. ESPN's Ian O'Connor in his book, Belichick,
Starting point is 01:43:15 reported that Brady wanted a divorce after that Super Bowl loss from his coach. And Brady made it clear to author Mark Leibovitch in the book Big Game that he was fed up with the culture of Belichick. It wasn't fun. It continues on and Brady didn't feel appreciated. In the words of a confidant, he was like, why am I doing this? Brady needed something new. On Monday night, March 16th, Brady called Kraft. They lived close. He got in his car, drove around the block and told him, I'm gone. Kraft believed he was coming over to agree to a new Patriot contract. One of the parts, according to this article, is that Bruce Ariens has fostered a very fun
Starting point is 01:44:03 environment. And we kept, this is a Colin was right. I kept saying, what I was being told is the two things in my life, the times I have left places of employment, you always end up. seeking the one thing your current environment doesn't give you, one or two things. When you read the Seth Wickersham piece, the two things Brady wanted. Weapons, Tampa Hadam, and a little fun. That's what Bruce Ariens is all about.
Starting point is 01:44:34 So Brady was very human and very common. This is why people leave. What is happening in my current workplace that I can solve? Better players on offense? and lighten up a little bit and put our arms around each other and have an occasional night out. That, according to Seth Wickersham, really was the driving force. It was never money. It was never money.
Starting point is 01:44:59 By the way, Tampa is one of the cheapest places in America to live. No state tax. 25 million in Tampa is like 34 million in New York. But here's the thing that I come back to is whereas Tom Brady has been a different guy in his Patriots Day, single guy, married guy, married with kids guy, TB12 brand guy. Pre-super Bowl, post-Super Bowl, pre-Icon, now an icon. You know, Belichick hasn't changed. And I've seen this my entire career, not only in business and in life, but I've seen
Starting point is 01:45:31 this a lot with coaches. The coaches that are rigid and more dogmatic about their style, they don't age as well. I remember as a kid, Frank Cush, football coach at Arizona State, Bobby Knight, Woody Hayes. I think Mike Ditka got very rigid. This is the way I coach. This is the way I do things. I think Greg Popovich is a pretty smart guy, a really smart guy.
Starting point is 01:45:53 But his culture turned off Kowai Leonard, a very modern 2020 NBA star. And when I look at coaches that have evolved Andy Reed. Between Kansas City and Philadelphia, he started really adapting to these college schemes. Coach K at Duke. You know, he was rigid initially and then said, why not get one and done? they're beating me. I'd rather have them and beat other teams. I think John Harbaugh is very much like, you know what? We can't keep doing this pocket quarterback thing.
Starting point is 01:46:24 Doc Rivers used to want control over personnel. He gave it up. He said, I'm just going to coach. I am just a, I got many faults. But when I used to get into this business, I would watch older sportscasters. And I always remember thinking, I don't want to be the older sportscaster that doesn't grow, doesn't get better. I don't want to be the guy that makes a little scratch and thinks, you know, it's over.
Starting point is 01:46:50 Keep growing, hire young people, be around young people, evolve as sportsable. I used to talk a lot more golf. I used to talk baseball 15 years ago. I used to be more college than pro football. And I think it doesn't matter how smart Bob Knight is or Bill Belichick. Belichick has to realize that things change. and one of the things that really changes, not just football, you know, how many times have I had an athlete on and they've said,
Starting point is 01:47:19 you know, I like that my coach cared about me. Of course they do. Of course they do. Football's hard, and there used to be a world you lived in where it was, you know, you show up to practice. You know, this culture for Popovich and Belichick was largely carried by two guys, Tim Duncan and Tom Brady. And when Tim Duncan left and was.
Starting point is 01:47:42 not the centerpiece of the locker room. The next star, Kauai Leonard, he didn't buy into Popovich. He didn't buy into him. They shipped him off. San Antonio doesn't matter. They're not as good as Utah. They're not as good as Denver. They're not the Lakers.
Starting point is 01:47:56 They're not the Clippers. And similarly with Bill Belichick, don't underestimate. There was that article a couple years ago that, you know, they can win with a lot of people in New England. You're never going to find another NBA guy like Duncan or another NFL player like Brady who is totally willing to sacrifice money
Starting point is 01:48:17 in big earning years to basically carry the culture. Not be part of it, carry it. And I think Popovich took it for granted with Duncan and he had Kauai Leonard and Kauai didn't buy it and he wasn't flexible. When you have Kauai Leonard, who's the best get a bucket guy in the NBA,
Starting point is 01:48:36 you got to be flexible. Because you're not getting another Kauai Leonard in the next four or five years. and I think they've always underestimated in New England, and they can release every press release they want. You've got to put your arms around athletes a little bit. They want to be liked. They want to be loved.
Starting point is 01:48:53 You know, Parcells, Phil Sims came on Friday on this show. He was a great interview. He said, Parcells was gruff, but he'd walk up to you once in a while and say, boy, you are, we are lucky to have you. And Sims, I started laughing. Sims said, he would come up to you once a camp and say that. You were so excited.
Starting point is 01:49:16 Bill likes me. Bill Parcells, really, that's all it takes. You don't have to tell people all day you love them, but you got to hug them occasionally. Occasionally. I'm all for tough love. But I think there's a little bit of a lack of warmth with Belichick, and I think it wore Brady out.
Starting point is 01:49:33 And it doesn't matter. The one thing in my life I've seen over and over again, not have to give up on things you believe in, but man, the world's changing. You can change with it because it's changing. It's regardless of you, it's changing. So you better be able to get on a wave and occasionally ride it. When I moved to Manhattan Beach, California, when I first got there where I live now, I still do it occasionally, but not as much.
Starting point is 01:50:03 I would go down, I'd get a coffee, and I'd go down and I'd watch the surfers. I'd stand on the pier. Or I'd park my car and I'd watch the surfers. And I'd sit there for a half hour. I'd just sit there and just watch the surfers. It's kind of fascinating. On a Saturday morning at like 536, I get up early. And the one thing you noticed about the really good,
Starting point is 01:50:23 either body surfers or surfers, they were picky on waves. They were picky on them. But what a good surfer would do is, listen, man, don't waste your time in the crappy waves. But once you have a good wave, You ride it. Let it do the work for you.
Starting point is 01:50:39 There's no reason to waste your energy in a bad wave. The really good surfers would sit out there for 15 minutes and ride one. And it's the same thing in life in football. When you get a good wave, Brady and Tim Duncan, when they're going to carry a lot of the water for you, appreciate them because you don't get many great waves. You can go out in the surf for 90 minutes and get three great waves. Take them and ride them all the way in.
Starting point is 01:51:07 because they don't last and there's not many of them. You're not going to get another Brady. There are many Tim Duncan's. You just don't have many Tim Duncan's. It's like, I'll have a pay cut. I'm going to win games. And I'm not banging on players who don't do that. Make the money.
Starting point is 01:51:22 Make all the money you can. Most guys, though, are not taking big pay cuts. They're not willing to get barked at. They're not willing to carry your water and carry your culture. And you better appreciate it. That is a rare commodity. And that's not a shot at athletes. They have very short shelf lives.
Starting point is 01:51:36 They want their money. They want to be treated right. And they deserve to be treated right. Okay. I'm done talking surfing. You know, see, you got to find content even when you're out having a coffee and watching surfers, Joy. I thought it was a good conversation. I haven't even thought about surfing recently.
Starting point is 01:51:54 Yeah. Have you ever tried to surf? Oh, I body surf poorly. It's fun. I did it with my son. My son was about that nine years old to about 13 when he still liked me. We used to body surf. And now, you know, now he's girls and computers and, you know, I'm just trying to get him to call me back occasionally.
Starting point is 01:52:12 Melvin Gordon of Denver Bronco. Good kid, good for him. That's coming up. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays at noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific. Discover matches all the cash back you earn on your credit card at the end of your first year. Discover is accepted at 99% of places in the U.S. that take credit cards. So almost all of them. Learn more at Discover.com slash yes.
Starting point is 01:52:34 limitations do apply. Well, he's played in the NFL for six years and there's a two-time pro bowler and I was in Las Vegas one time and I was in an airport and I was getting on what do you call those little shuttle things over to fly back and I saw this kind of
Starting point is 01:52:50 you know big guy and I looked over and he looked at me and it's Melvin Gordon the former badger star and Chargers player and he was during the holdout. He was a very thoughtful guy and we were talking about what do you do and I don't I don't remember exactly what I said, but my takeaway was, dude, that's a lot of money to pass up.
Starting point is 01:53:10 And we just sat there and discussed it. It was, I don't want to give you away everything we talked about. But running backs, it's a really difficult place to be right now. They are currently not in vogue, although it should be noted, most of the good teams in the NFL can run the football. Last year, the Patriots couldn't for the first time in 20 years, and they weren't very good. So Melvin is joining us now. So first of all, congratulations, $16 million, almost $14 million guaranteed. You were in an interesting place where the Chargers liked you, and they liked you a lot, but it became a numbers game.
Starting point is 01:53:45 Is there any bitterness, Melvin at all, now that you're gone and you'll still play them twice a year? There's no bitterness. You know, they gave me their best offer, which was a good offer. I wasn't banking on, you know, David Johnson can trade and Todd getting cut and things like that. I didn't foresee that. But, you know, there's no bitterness, man. I think I love for those guys, especially my teammates. Do you, first of all, you go to a Denver team that I think, I've been saying this for the last month before you got there, I said, I like them.
Starting point is 01:54:24 I think they found their quarterback. I think they're really talented. Will it be unique to play the Chargers twice a year? How does that land for you? Yeah, it's going to be cool, man. You know, guys that I've been around for five years, you know, just going to war with and, you know, just talking trash with it and now being on the opposite side, you know, you know, outside, you know, looking in, I guess, or inside looking out, however you want to put it.
Starting point is 01:54:53 You know, going up against those guys. It's going to be different, man, but it's going to be fun. Melvin, you told me in Vegas, I'll share this. you said you love football and you like practice and you really missed it. How hard was it for you? I mean, I've never had a situation in my life where people are offering me huge money, but I can't sign for it because, you know, I got an agent and he's like, be careful here.
Starting point is 01:55:17 You like football. You wanted to play during this. How tough was it sitting at home watching your team knowing you're not there? What's that like as a pro athlete? It's terrible, man. And I don't wish, you know, I don't wish that type of situation on any player, man. It's tough. You know, I had a real strong off-season.
Starting point is 01:55:41 I worked really hard, you know, to set myself up in a competition to be successful for the year. And, you know, just missing that little time with the guys, man. You know, let's think, man, going out there, winning without you, losing without you. You know, either or, man, it's tough. watching from a distance. Now, it's interesting because of the virus, my gut feeling is we're not going to have an OTA and you have to learn a new offense. How long did it take you to learn the Chargers offense or the Badger's offense?
Starting point is 01:56:14 How long do you think will it take to learn? If you don't have an OTA and a shortened preseason, does that hurt you? I guess in a sense. I guess it just depends on how, you know, how, how, how, how, how, how, how, how, how, how, hard to buckle down and study. You know, when I was with the Badgers, you know, I was there four years and three years out of my time there, I had three different playbook. So I always had to, you know, it's nothing new, I guess, in a sense.
Starting point is 01:56:44 The Chargers Playbook was pretty tough, you know, just hearing from other guys coming in. It's pretty, it's one or more difficult ones, just hearing other players come from different team. So I think I'll be pretty good, especially with protection and things like that. I mean, I think, like I said, guys said that this offense was pretty hard. So I'm banking on, you know, being able to learn it pretty fast. Well, guys go to Wisconsin are pretty smart. That's not the world's easiest school, by the way. Wisconsin's a great university. When you, you know, I could make the argument that you don't need camp. You're a veteran. You don't need preseason. I could make the argument of all the positions in football
Starting point is 01:57:28 that this virus would benefit are guys like Melvin Gordon who've had a couple little nagging injuries. Are you trying to take an optimistic view on potentially time off, work out, you know, get in the best shape of your life? Well, when I was in charge, I didn't go to OTA, so I'm on, you know, it's almost like regular schedule for me. obviously I would have to go with the Broncos considering that I don't know the playbook and things like that but the last past two years with the Chargers I didn't go to OTA so you know this is I'm on a record schedule okay Melvin Gordon joining us former Charger and now a Bronco do you know much about the Broncos I mean you faced him no what do you say do you know much about Drew Locke has anybody called you
Starting point is 01:58:20 The running back coach talked to me. I actually talked to the offense coordinator today. You know, I reached out to Drew. I knew Vaughn. Philip Lindsay hit me up. But I don't know. Honestly, I don't know too much about Denver. I don't know.
Starting point is 01:58:39 I mean, I have no reason to go there. And obviously, I know about their defense because that's who I watched them against. But as far as their offense, I mean, I was, you know, I was looking up things on the offense line. I was looking up things on the dooff coordinator. I was looking up things on the head coach. I'm trying to piece things together as much as I can before I get there. So I just got a good feeling of what's going on. The Melvin, you know, people, the life, life is cyclical.
Starting point is 01:59:05 And I remember when fullbacks mattered and then they didn't matter. And now fullbacks matter again, the Patriots, the 49ers, and running backs. Everybody tells me they don't matter. And I'm like, I don't know. I watched Baltimore last. year. It seems like they matter to me. Do you believe that there's going to be a reemergence, a pivot back to running backs? Do you sense that? Oh, I do. And as far as with contracts and things like that, I think, you know, Joe Mixing and Alvin Camara, Sequin, Christian McCaffrey,
Starting point is 01:59:41 they'll turn things back around. And, you know, it'll be up to, you know, for, you know, us and the younger guys to keep it up there. So they'll change that. But, you know, we are devalue right now. You know, it's kind of sad because we catch the ball, we run the ball, we block. You know, we're such a big piece to the game. And it's just crazy because we get overlooked because they say we can get injured. Well, it's a lot of positions that get in.
Starting point is 02:00:07 It's a lot of, you know, a lot of guys that get in, you know, so I just don't understand it. But, you know, I guess that's just where we are. When I was young as a kid, everyone wanted to be a running back now. These days, nobody wants to. No, I mean, there's no quite. I tell people all the time, I follow high school recruiting and football. I always have. And I remember California, the state of California this year has two really big time running backs.
Starting point is 02:00:33 They have 26 really good receivers. Like, let's be honest. That's just the world we live in now. But I think it'll come back because I think football at its essence is a point of attack, physical football game. And you can own the clock and own the line of scrimmage. with running back, so I think it's coming back. Now, with the virus, are you working out right now? Like, are you, what's your social distancing like?
Starting point is 02:00:57 What is your life like today? I'm working out, man, but, you know, they just started closing down gyms here. You know, they've been closing down gyms in California. I'm in Florida right now, training. They just started closing down the gyms. So they're making it a bit difficult, man. We're trying to run around and trying to, you know, find what we can to get it in it work out, man. But it's, you know, not, not every guy got a gym in their house. They're able to do
Starting point is 02:01:24 things in, so it's going to be a lot of push-ups and jogging here in a little bit. But we're trying to make the best out of what we got, but they're closing everything down, man. It's been crazy. It's funny when I met you, I remember telling friends later, I said, you know, he was so laid back in a jeans and a T-shirt, dude just wanted to play football. And all of a sudden, somebody gives you a 13.5 million guaranteed. I'm not going to be nosy. It's none of my business. business. But is there anything like you ever wanted and you thought to yourself, you know, 13 million is a lot of, there's a lot of money. I could. I could actually go buy. Do you have, maybe you're buying something for a parent. You're buying something for somebody,
Starting point is 02:02:03 anything out there that you ever wanted now that you could have? Yeah, a house. I've been living in an apartment, you know, for a little while now. And, you know, it's time to grow up a little bit. I want to get a house, man, and, you know, just be able to relax and sit on that and pay that off. You know, like I said, grow up a little bit, man. Melvin, you're a good dude. Congratulations. I think it's a really good fit on a really good roster.
Starting point is 02:02:31 And I'll be watching you. Those charger games will be interesting. Congratulations to you and your family. Appreciate you, man. I'm going to watch it yourself, too, man. I watch it on YouTube all. All right. Awesome.
Starting point is 02:02:42 Thanks, man. Yeah, take care. Melvin Gordon. Yeah, he wants to get a little crib. He's had the condo apartment life. Now he wants it. When you meet people, though, you kind of get a sense of people. You know, four or five minutes you talk to him.
Starting point is 02:02:54 You kind of get a sense of their personality. He's a hard guy not to root for. He's just incredibly. He's a good dude. He was really bummed out. He's like, I'm in great shape. I want to play football. I miss my teammates.
Starting point is 02:03:06 He goes, nothing's worse than watching everybody go through the struggle and you're not in the room. He goes, it's the. So when I asked him that, his answer was, It's terrible. Just a terrible thing. Good stuff, Melvin Gordon. Here is Joy Taylor with the news. No, no, no, no.
Starting point is 02:03:24 Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. All right, well, starting with somewhat expected news, veteran IOC member Dick Pound said this afternoon that the Tokyo Olympics will be postponed due to coronavirus concerns. Doing a phone interview with USA Today, he said on the basis of the information
Starting point is 02:03:45 the IOC has. The postponement has been decided. The parameters going forward have not been determined, but the games are not going to start on July 24th. That much, I know. So the Olympics will likely be pushed to 2021 with details to be worked out in the next four weeks. He believes that the IOC will announce their next step soon, but it will come in stages. Obviously, this makes the most sense because, as Melbourne was just saying, nobody can work out anywhere. All the gyms are closed, pools are closed, tracks are closed. So even if you have a gym in your house or the ability to work out in your home, you likely don't have the tools that you need to, you know, do your sport.
Starting point is 02:04:25 I mean, if you throw javalin, what are you doing? There's only so many, you know, routine exercises you can do before there's nothing else to do. Yeah, I feel bad. This is, I mean, you train for four years to run a race or, I mean, it's just how frustrating is that? I mean, we get to do a show every day. Can you imagine if we've prepped for one show a year and we prepped years for it and they cancel it? Oh, my Lord. It's heartbreaking for these athletes. It's totally understandable. And obviously, as an athlete, you have a limited
Starting point is 02:04:56 time in your life to perform at that level. And when you're talking about the Olympics, I mean, once every four years and this is absolute precision. I mean, you cut down certain things as you lead up to the Olympics. But we kind of all saw this coming. I mean, it's It's the biggest international gathering besides the World Cup. And I would probably argue it's even more intense than the World Cup. So to have that many people come together, even if you did it without fans, the amount of athletes and trainers.
Starting point is 02:05:26 And it's just, you know, the logistics of it would be impossible in this current state. Well, I say it's such an international event. I mean, this corona, your numbers are different in Germany than Spain and Italy. New York's different than Dallas. You know, you're trying to create this curve, flatten the curve and some regions are on fire from this and others are not as much. So international events right now for the next two to three months are just a non-starter. Right. And even though the games are not until July, the logistics of it obviously leading up to,
Starting point is 02:05:58 you're not just showing up in July if you're an athlete, you know, you're there before that. So it'll likely get pushed to 2021, but we'll find out what the plans are moving forward in the next couple weeks. So we were just talking about this earlier with Rick Stroud when Tom Brayette. Brady signed with the Buccaneers. He only had one request. Now, I thought that one of his requests would certainly be, you know, to have control of the offense or to have number 12. Yes.
Starting point is 02:06:23 But he only requested to get the phone numbers of all of his new teammates. Love it. This was very sweet. But I also thought it was very telling as well. Like, this is kind of the essence of what Tom Brady is. You know, it's wanting to make sure that everything is well, oils, the relationships being in sync with everyone. I don't think, I would imagine that's not a normal request.
Starting point is 02:06:51 I mean, quarterback is different. You know, Brady's different. I mean, let's be honest. You know, it's 43, he still wants to play. I mean, most guys, do you think Aaron Rogers is going to play the 43? Like, I just don't think that's in his DNA. Maybe I'm wrong. But I think most guys get to a point, like even Big Ben, who I like, reportedly in the
Starting point is 02:07:09 offseason, he kind of shuts it down. Brady's different. He doesn't drink a beer during the season. He's such a different guy. No, he's kind of, I would say Kobe-esque in that. He is just obsessed with football. And, I mean, he still has the physical ability to play. I mean, look at Philip Rivers.
Starting point is 02:07:29 Like, we all think Philip Rivers is done. Phil Rivers is not done. And from all accounts, that dude wants to keep playing football for as long as people let him. So by we, obviously, I mean, the NFL, not us. We don't have anything to do with it. But I did think if this was an amazing. impressive, an impressive nugget. And it's something that I think, like, great leaders.
Starting point is 02:07:47 You always hear these things about them. It's a very unexpected thing. But then something that, you know, of course, why wouldn't you want, I mean, the numbers to all of your teammates seems like a lot, but why wouldn't you want to start a relationship that way? Also, Chris Godwin currently wears number 12. He said, if Tom Brady wants it, he will give it to him. But if it's not a big deal, he's going to keep it.
Starting point is 02:08:06 So we'll find out what number that Tom Brady's going to end up wearing. And speaking of Tom Brady, the Kraft family and the Patriots thank Tom Brady with a full page ad in Sunday's edition of Tampa Bay Times. Under the headline Thank you Tom. The message read in part for 20 amazing years. You gave us
Starting point is 02:08:23 everything you had when you arrived as a sixth round pick and the best selection this franchise has ever made. No one imagined all you'd accomplish or how much you'd soon mean to an entire region. You now leave New England after two decades of dominance as the goat and forever part of our family to the
Starting point is 02:08:39 Buccaneers fans in Tampa Bay community take care of him. You got a great one. So sweet. Oh my gosh. I actually love this by the Kraft family and the Patriots to do this. I think it's kind of interesting that it's just the Kraft family and the Patriots. Kind of an admission of another name there. But this is a classy breakup for now. Obviously, we'll get the full story later on when everyone is retired and willing to start talking. And I can't wait for that because I'm sure there's some wrinkle in this that is going to blow our minds. You know what I'm thinking of if I'm Brady?
Starting point is 02:09:13 I don't want 12. You know the way Tom thinks. Tom's probably thinking to himself, listen, I'm starting over. I don't want any of that. And I wouldn't be shocked that Brady's like, give me eight. Listen, LeBron's worn different numbers.
Starting point is 02:09:27 Michael Jordan's won different numbers. Kobe's worn different numbers, right? Like, I think Brady part of him's thinking, I know his brand is called TB12, but in Florida region, it'll be TB8. I can see Brady. just saying this is I'm starting on I mean he's not a petty guy
Starting point is 02:09:43 I don't think he's that kind of guy that you know I don't think numbers mean that much to him No I don't I certainly don't well Chris Gobbin has already said he's not going to make him pay for it because usually when a guy wants a number you make him pay for it would seem a little you know out of touch in this current climate but that's happened so he's already said that's not going to happen
Starting point is 02:09:59 which is good but yeah I'm with you I don't I actually think I'd prefer to see him in a different number It'd be just different it'd be fun yeah the whole thing is different so just go all in said last week, I mean, having lived in Connecticut, the Patriots are Hogwarts. It's this legendary rigid prep school, right? Everybody dresses the same, no independent. Tampa Bay is the, is like Beverly Hills High. There could be some crazy nonsense going on. It's a big public school. Everybody's beautiful, and it's just a little loose. Tom will tighten it up. They'll loosen Tom up,
Starting point is 02:10:33 and I think it'll work beautifully. It's going to, it's not what I expected. That's right. It's going to be totally different, but I can't wait to see what happens. I'm all in. We're all in on it. Joy with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Hurd Lye News. Some thoughts on the NBA season that I had last night, as I had, like the rest of you, lots of time to chill and watch Netflix.
Starting point is 02:10:55 Some thoughts on that. Plus, the winners and losers connected to Tom Brady in our best for last. One more herd? The herd streams 24 hours a day, seven days a week within the IHeart Radio app. Search Herd to listen. or on demand whenever you'd like. Buy in a used car, the internet can confuse you with vague pricing. Don't let it search from over a million pre-owned vehicles with a new true car, buy smarter, drive, happier.
Starting point is 02:11:22 My thoughts about the NBA season, we did get some news, some good news about Corona from Italy today. Numbers are down. So you're going to see cases go up, but what are they compared to the previous day? So when you see, oh, you know, the headlines, I don't think journalists are very good at math. If there's 400 cases yesterday and 200 today, you could say, oh, it's soaring. No, that's great news. When it doesn't go up, up, up, up, when it plateaus or goes down, even though there's 200 new cases, you're comparing day to day because what you're trying to do is get it to level off.
Starting point is 02:11:56 So they got very promising news in Italy today that the social distancing helps. We know it matters. We know it helps. So in Germany and in Spain and in Italy from what I just read, there is some encouraging signs. But it's too early. We're still not at the point. We won't see that here in the States probably for another week because we're just now really putting our arms around in New York and California. Some, you know, enacting intense social distancing.
Starting point is 02:12:25 I do worry about the NBA. I think it's been a really captivating season. I'm kind of 75, 25, 25. the season's going to get canceled, what I worry about is that, you know, even if no player had it, even if you played in empty arenas, even though if everybody had been tested, even though these are the world's best athletes cardio-wise and probably are fairly, I mean, really, really low risk of passing away, right? I mean, they're in about as good as shape.
Starting point is 02:12:55 They're 25 to 31 years old mostly. What I worry about is you start the playoffs up and then a couple of players, you're sharing the ball, get it and then you've got to retest. And do you have to, you know, I saw today the Olympics canceled. That's July 15th and they're out. That's three months away. My, you know, April, May, June. That's four months away and the Olympics got canceled.
Starting point is 02:13:17 So what's the, is Adam Silver have an end date? Is he sitting to himself thinking, okay, here's the date. Here's the last date we could start the playoffs. So I do think in the next 10 days, I mean, Joy and I talked earlier before it got canceled, we said the Olympics, we're going to know here in about three or four days on the Olympics. I kind of feel like Adam Silver and the NBA are going to know they're going to see if there's any leveling off. They're going to watch the European numbers, watch the New York City numbers. I think we're going to know in seven to ten days if the NBA season is canceled.
Starting point is 02:13:52 I mean, the Olympics again did it today. So you keep watching, you keep crossing your fingers. So, you know, Brady's going to Tampa Bay. and I thought we'd play a little game today, kind of the winners and the losers, because when you have a move like LeBron to the Lakers or A-Rod to the Yankees, it clearly changes so many things
Starting point is 02:14:13 for so many people who are connected, have tentacles to A-Rod or to Kobe, the late Kobe Bryant, or to Tom Brady. So our best for last, winners and losers with Tom. Winner. Sam Darnold is probably now, in my opinion, the best quarterback in a lot.
Starting point is 02:14:31 his division. If you go and look at best quarterback in a division in the NFL, if they don't win the division, they get to the playoffs. By the way, he's not done well against Brady. Owen 2 and been outscored 71 to 3. Winner. Buffalo Bills, obviously. This is a playoff team, two of the last three years. They're coming off their best season this century, 10 and 6. And Brady, by the, nobody owned the bills like Brady. boy, he was 32 and 3. Wow. So nobody is happier that Tom is flying United to Tampa.
Starting point is 02:15:13 Nobody is happier. Nobody's a bigger winner than Buffalo. Winner. Fox Sports. More games for Fox with Tom Brady. Let's be honest. The NFC now gives me, I got Aaron Rogers, I got Russell Wilson, I got Breeze, I got Carson Wenz, I got the,
Starting point is 02:15:31 Dallas Cowboys, Dak Prescott. I got Tom Brady. Gotta be honest with you. We did well. Loser. Aaron Rogers. Packers play at Tampa this year. Another great quarterback.
Starting point is 02:15:47 He's got to get through. I don't know. I just Tom Brady in a playoff game against Aaron Rogers. That's another obstacle I wouldn't face if I was Aaron. Winner. Trevor Lawrence, Justin Fields, two remarkable A-plus prospects in college football, one for Clemson, one for Ohio State.
Starting point is 02:16:10 Here's the good news. The Patriots and Bill Belichick will be doing a soft tanking this year. Loser. Poor Drew Breeze. His whole life he's chasing Brady. Get me into the Super Bowl. Now he's got to face Brady, who probably has at least as good a weapons in the same division. Got to play him twice a year. Again, just another tough out for a great quarterback trying to get more Super Bowl trophies. Winner. Florida, 900% increase for the Buccaneers in marketing and jersey sales. 20% of Florida's population is 65 and older, and TB12 can admit, who knows?
Starting point is 02:16:56 You know, TB12 lifestyles come into Florida. And that's a quality lifestyle. It can help the summer body maybe in Florida. Loser. Ugs. Florida is the hottest state in the country ahead of Hawaii. Nobody wears Ugs. The UG brand took a
Starting point is 02:17:12 not a great sponsorship anymore. Ugs feels right in New England. Nobody's wearing Ugs in Florida. Winner. Chazelle. Nobody lays out in the beach in Foxboro. A supermodel needs her vitamin D and son. The winner is clearly
Starting point is 02:17:30 Jazeel Bunchin. But Jazeel Brady, excuse me. Is she hyphenated now, Jizel Bunchin Brady? I don't know. I think he just goes by Giselle. I think you're right. I think at that point, like Pelae, that's all you have to say.
Starting point is 02:17:43 Her name's Worthmore. Why would you change it? Yeah, good call on that. You know, when you look at her career earnings, supermodels do really well. Yeah, it's a good career. Yeah, it's really good work if you can get it. With today's health concerns, more important than ever to take care of your body, MDrive Elite, refined your prime with MDrive, use the code heard 20% off.
Starting point is 02:18:08 Kevin Clark came out earlier today, writer formerly of the Wall Street Journal and now the ringer. Joy, I thought this was interesting when he talked about that, you know, the virus may end OTAs, and it also could have an abridged preseason, right? And Kevin had done homework. He goes, the last time we had a. shortened camp or canceled camp, he laid out what happened. In 2011, when they put the training camp practice limits in place in the first time, that defined that season.
Starting point is 02:18:42 Coaches had no idea what to do. And you look at the teams that were good that year, the Patriots, obviously, the Giants won the Super Bowl, the Packers, the Ravens. It was veteran teams with stability and good coaches because they knew how to adapt in the club. It's that kind of coaching that is going to be really valuable this year. That's why coach quarterback coordinator. I totally agree with you.
Starting point is 02:19:03 This year it's going to be very important because there's going to be no time to learn anything. Yeah, you know, Joey, we started the show today. Our lead was actually, if you go and look at the teams where the quarterback and the coach return and there's not a lot of moves with coordinators outside of the AFC East, where New England's not going to be as good clearly, you can go to every division. and it looks a lot like last year, Raven Steelers, you know, Texans, Titans, 49ers, Seattle Seahawks, Green Bay in Minnesota, Philadelphia and Dallas.
Starting point is 02:19:42 Now, Dallas obviously has a new coach, but they do have a quarterback, you know, who knows the personnel. I think it's going to be another familiarity year. I do not think we're going to have OTAs. If the Olympics are canceling July 15th, May, I mean, I think I can say with almost certainty, may, we're not going to be. quite through it yet, at least in terms of
Starting point is 02:20:01 athletes, sweating, touching. I do think we're going to have one of the things I've thought about is how do you not tank the economy? Like what can you do small moves joy to give a resurgence to the economy and maintaining social distancing? Like NFL training camp does not do that.
Starting point is 02:20:22 No, it doesn't. And even listening to what he's saying as far as, you know, how that affects veteran teams, if the NBA season isn't canceled, you have to imagine that the older teams going directly into the playoffs would be at an advantage for that reason as well.
Starting point is 02:20:37 Yeah, that's right. Clippers have veterans, Lakers have veterans. Celtics have, I would say, they've played together, if not veterans. But you'd lean toward teams who have a lot more postseason experience. Maybe this is Westbrook's year. I mean, who knows?
Starting point is 02:20:52 Maybe this is Harden in Westbrook's year. Yeah. I want to thank everybody. Joy Taylor, This is just everybody that's part of this today. John Goulet, Greg Toey, everybody back there. We have a smaller staff. Really appreciate it.
Starting point is 02:21:07 Trying to just kind of create some normalcy in all of our lives. You're doing it for us, certainly. We'll see you tomorrow in L.A. Last night, a blown call changed a game. This morning, the internet lost its mind. And nobody's telling you exactly what happened. That's where Sports Slice comes in. I'm Timbo.
