Joy Taylor joining me on a Monday that we cannot wait to get into.
Starting point is 00:02:51 By the way, ratings were up. Fantastic. Week 1, bunch of close games. One hour from now where Colin was right, where Colin was wrong, and there is a bunch of all of them. Good to have you in today. Good morning. And for the TV audience, we're a little different today. Yes, you are closer to me. I am not sitting on a throne. Our set got a little change. The couch is gone.
Starting point is 00:03:11 Yes, got some alterations, have chairs instead. And we have great stuff today. Tony Gonzalez, Michael, Vic, Greg Jennings. I want to start with this, Joy. Is that, for the record, there are certain things I'll overpay for. If I lived in Phoenix or Vegas, I'd overpay for a pool. If I live in Seattle, I'll overpay for an umbrella. And if I have Aaron Rogers in my division, I'll overpay for Khalil Mack.
Starting point is 00:03:33 I'm okay with it. If I got to face Aaron Rogers 10 times in the next five years minimum, Chicago Bears said, we're probably going to overpay and give up a little too much and I'm okay with it. Can't live in Seattle without an umbrella. You can't live in Phoenix or Vegas in the summer without a pool. And if you're the Chicago Bears, Aaron Rogers for the next five years is your reality. Overpay a little for Khalil Mack. But I also want to talk about Green Bay should have Khalil Mack.
Starting point is 00:04:00 I know Green Bay you think you won last night. No, he didn't. Packer fans think they won last night. No, you didn't. You escaped last night. You escaped. You were about two inches on that sack to Aaron Rogers from him not playing the rest of the year.
Starting point is 00:04:16 Do you see the pressure on his leg? Did you see him gimp around that field? Did you see him on a cart leaving Lambo into the tunnel? That's not winning. That's escaping. He just came off a collarbone surgery. Green Bay owes Aaron Rogers, Khalil Mack.
Starting point is 00:04:33 There's 7-0 in the playoffs with Aaron Rogers when the Green Bay defense is just competent. The average NFL team scores 21 and a half points a game. When the Packers hold teams in the playoffs to 22 or less, Aaron Rogers has never lost. But you know why Aaron Rogers hasn't been to eight Super Bowls like Tom Brady? It's not Aaron Rogers. It's because this team gives up 50, 41, 38, 29, 36, 34. Don't tell me you one last night.
Starting point is 00:05:01 I saw Aaron Rogers. I saw those fans. I saw what you were doing. I watched Twitter. You were freaking out. And by the way, Khalil Mack was on a snap count. He's not even in shape.
Starting point is 00:05:13 You only played against the half of Khalil Mack that they scheduled for him to play. Good luck in Soldier Field the next five years when he's not in a snap count. Good luck the next four times you face him at Lambo in five years. When he's not in a snap count. count. By the way, the Packers have a really good right tackle. Brian Belaga, what happens when you don't have a tackle that good? Because he was totally overwhelmed. Green Bay.
Starting point is 00:05:39 Don't tell me you can't afford two great players. Minnesota's paying more than just Kirk Cousins. Rams are paying seven different guys. New England's paying Gronk and Tom Brady. Houston's playing Jay Watt and Jadavian Clowny and they're going to have to pay Deshawn Pardney. I don't want to hear about we can only pay one guy. What are you dealing with a bank than the Rams are dealing with? You could have had the best offensive player in your division, Aaron Rogers, and the best defensive player in your division, Khalil Mack, and you went Packers, you went cheap. Well, you know, it's a very expensive, yep.
Starting point is 00:06:12 By the way, companies do this all the time. They overpay for something to keep it away from a rival. I've worked at a lot of business companies, a lot of media companies. They'll overpay for people, rights, leagues, games to keep it away from rivals. If I'm Green Bay and I know, A, the Bears want him, and I got to play them twice a year, and, oh, B, free agents don't really like Green Bay. Kaleo Mack would never choose us. And C, we're the only team in the NFL with two first-round picks.
Starting point is 00:06:45 I am getting Kaleo Mack to keep him away from my rival and to keep him off Aaron Rogers. I mean, it's real simple in football. Three positions I'm always going to pay for. Quarterback, pay him. Left tackle to protect quarterback, pay him. Pass rusher to get their quarterback, pay them. I'm just paying it. And I'll overpay for all three.
Starting point is 00:07:06 I'll overpay for Kirk Cousins at quarterback in Minnesota. This roster's good enough in Minnesota to win a Super Bowl. I'll overpay for it. I don't love it, but I'll do it now because Minnesota's going to have to start paying all those guys. Eventually, I'll overpay right now next three years for Kirk Cousins. And if I'm the Bears and I got Mitch Trebisky's my quarterback and I got to go against Aaron Rogers, yeah, I'm going to overpay for Khalil Mack. I will support the Bears forever on that.
Starting point is 00:07:31 That Bears defense has to be great because, you know, I mean, Mitch Trubisky is running a college offense. I mean, did you look at Aaron Rogers on the sideline? Two and a half minutes left. They were giving the ball to Chicago. He was, oh, they're laughing. He's like, we got this thing. I mean, we got this thing.
Starting point is 00:07:45 Trubisky against our secondary, our pass rush. I'm not going to score touchdown. So, you know, it's, I mean, did you see what defensive linemen? Did you see what pass rushers did in the NFL yesterday? Anybody watched Denver, Seattle, Vaughnman? Miller. Three sacks, four hits, two force fumbles. Do you watch Miles Garrett, two force fumbles, two sacks, three tackles for loss? Colleel Mack, I don't know, had the greatest half, I'm not joking, in the history of the NFL by a defensive player. In fact, it was the best stat line by any
Starting point is 00:08:14 defensive player in the NFL since Khalil Mack did it for Oakland. You got Lawrence Taylor or the closest thing. What about JJ Watts? J.J. Watts never healthy. Calliol Mack never misses games. There are things I'm going to overpay for. Umbrellas, pools, pass rushers of a masoner and Rogers. And there are things companies should overpay for to keep them away from facing you. Number 52, bears. Green Bay, you didn't win last night. Don't tell me you won last night.
Starting point is 00:08:47 You escaped last night. Let me shift to the Dallas Cowboys. Who? Was that a stinker? It's not like Carolina looked much better. But let me talk about the Dallas Cowboys. So they lost yesterday, but it's not just losing. It's how they lose.
Starting point is 00:09:05 And, you know, I was thinking about this. All of us in life as we age, I'll just speak for guys here. Okay, I'm not going to speak for women. I'm a guy. I'll speak for guys. I see the world differently now than I did in my 20s. In my 20s, no kids, single, living in Vegas. It was all about me.
Starting point is 00:09:22 And then in my mid-30s, I had a kid. and I was married. All right. It's still about me sometimes, but it's not all about me. Then I had a second child, and now I have stepkids, and now I go, oh, yeah, I'm not, it's not always about me. In fact, there's a lot of days that's not about me. There are weeks it's not about me. And that's okay.
Starting point is 00:09:46 That's the cycle of life, the chapters of life, right? And as you age as a guy, I can only speak for guys here, I see the world differently. And let's talk about Jerry Jones. Jerry Jones is 20 and 30 and he's an oil maverick and he's doing things. Oh, it makes a bunch of money. And then all of a sudden he gets to a point where I want to buy the Dallas Cowboys. And now he's got, you know, the richest franchise in American sports. And I'm thinking Jerry Jones is 75 years old.
Starting point is 00:10:14 And he's watching that thing. And he's in a different stage now. Jerry Jones in recent years has made very non-Jerry Jones moves. He used to hate Vegas. He voted against Vegas. Vegas is not good for the NFL. Suddenly flipped. He was the owner that got Vegas a football team.
Starting point is 00:10:31 Jerry Jones was pro player. It didn't matter how bad the player was. It didn't matter what a headache. Didn't matter what. Jerry Jones was pro player. And then about six months ago, he flipped. Des Bryant.
Starting point is 00:10:43 We don't have any receivers. He's our best. Let's get rid of him. As Jerry Jones is aging, he is showing you a different Jerry Jones. He's running out of time and Jerry knows it. And I'm watching that game yesterday, and I have defended Des Bryant, though I've told you, he's never going to be an A quarterback.
Starting point is 00:11:01 He's never going to be an elite top, carry the team on his shoulders guy. I like his leadership. I like his size, his physicality, his mobility. But you watch he and Mitch Trubisky, they're not Aaron Rogers, Breeze, Ben. They're not. Russell, Wilson, Brady. They're not. They're never going to be.
Starting point is 00:11:18 There's a reason Dak went in the fourth round. But Jerry Jones at 75 is not just happy to own the Cowboys. He's owned him for a long time. He's not just happy to make money. He's made all his money. He's realized all his dreams. New stadium, new practice facilities, Super Bowls. Jerry Jones now is in the chapter of his life at 75 years old.
Starting point is 00:11:38 He's not only on the back nine. He may be on the back two or three. And yesterday is he sitting there watching Jason Garrett and he also watches Belichick and Andy Reed and Doug Peterson. and Sean Payton. Does he think Jason Garrett's in that class? He doesn't. And he's watching Dese yesterday, and he's watching Breeze yesterday,
Starting point is 00:11:57 and he's watching Brady, and he's watching all these great quarterbacks. And does he think, does he think Dak Prescott's that? No, he doesn't. He's got eyes. He may be old. He's not blind. Yesterday, the Cowboys didn't just lose, but they looked boring and safe and limited and pedestrian.
Starting point is 00:12:13 And it looked like they had a really, really low ceiling. Jerry doesn't like ceilings. If Dallas were lost 3837, it's different. In a wild, dynamic, creative, fireworks show. Dallas yesterday didn't just lose. That ceiling looked low. Jason Garrett, limited. Not terrible.
Starting point is 00:12:40 Limited offense. Not creative. DAC. Good enough. But 22 wins last two years, but I just wonder when Jerry Jones sits up in that box, this is a new Jerry. He flipped on Vegas. Pro player flipped on DES.
Starting point is 00:13:02 Is that? That something you want long term? Jason Garrett, Dak Prescott? Now, Dak's, DAC only making $750,000 a year. Nobody is outperforming their contract. like Dak Prescott. But Jerry knows if he signs Dak to a franchise deal,
Starting point is 00:13:24 that may be Jerry's last big franchise quarterback. I don't know. The world changes as you age. You see things differently. He can't like what he saw yesterday.
Starting point is 00:13:40 Coming up next on a Monday, 45 minutes from where Colin was right where Colin was wrong. But first, I'm watching the Browns and the Steelers yesterday. And as I'm watching them, something hits me. And it's not just the tie part. But if you're a Steeler fan and Joyce from Pittsburgh,
Starting point is 00:14:03 something had to jump out at you. That's coming up next. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific. On Fox Sports Radio, FS1, and the IHeart Radio app. By the way, being a Pittsburgh Steeler fan is the world's greatest roller coaster ride. I mean, it's just like this all over the place. And mostly wins, especially when you're in a division against Cleveland and Cincinnati. But I used to work at a company that had theme parks and roller coasters.
Starting point is 00:14:32 And you know what happens when you ride a lot of roller coasters? You just don't feel that good. You get woozy. Your stomach hurts. When I was a kid, I could ride roller coasters all day. And then as I get older and older and older, I can do like two a day. Then I just want to go have a sandwich, watch my kids. kids on the roller coasters. And the Steelers
Starting point is 00:14:48 yesterday, their box score, this is the life of a Pittsburgh Steeler fan. 12 penalties for 120 yards. Six turnovers. But seven sacks and six yards of play. That's the Steelers. They're just a mess.
Starting point is 00:15:05 But they are so talented that they've been able to overcome it for years, again, especially because Cleveland and Cincinnati are in their division and they dominate both. It reminds me a lot of Robert Downey, Jr., in Hollywood early in his career. He had behavioral drug stuff arrested multiple times, but he was so damn talented, he kept getting jobs.
Starting point is 00:15:23 He was just so gifted, so handsome, so funny, so glib, so gifted. They just kept giving him jobs. But eventually, to reach his ultimate potential, he had to button it up. And Pittsburgh's all over the map. But they can win most of the time, you know, except when they play Belichick and Brady. And then they can't win because they're a mess. they are the most dysfunctional, even this year. You got the running back holding out, you got offensive linemen bashing him.
Starting point is 00:15:51 You got Big Ben's bashing Tomlin and Todd Haley's out. And then he's in. He's yelling at Big Ben. But they're so talented, they keep winning games. But yesterday now, Cleveland is good enough because they've been so bad for years. They got draft picks. You watch Cleveland yesterday and you're like, oh, Miles Garrett's really great. Jarvis Landry's really great.
Starting point is 00:16:11 And they got some cornerbacks that are pretty good. in Cleveland now you can tie them when you're dysfunctional. I mean, Cleveland had that game. And eventually Cleveland's going to get better at quarterback. And they're going to get this superstar young coach. And being a dysfunctional mess is not going to work. And that's the problem with being dysfunctional. I live near Hollywood.
Starting point is 00:16:32 I see it all the time. Massive talent and massive dysfunction. And you can overcome a lot of it. Talent overcomes a lot of issues. Aaron Rogers overcomes a lot of flaws. I mean, there's no getting past that. Russell Wilson makes up for a lot of mistakes in draft picks by the Seattle Seahawks. But the last eight years, the Steelers have won three playoff wins.
Starting point is 00:16:53 And there's a reason. They're dysfunctional. Yesterday's game was a microcosm. Seven sacks, six yards of play. Six turnovers, five interceptions, holding. There was a series. I've got to show you, there was a series in the third quarter that was so Steelers. Second goal, touchdown.
Starting point is 00:17:13 Nullified penalty. Okay, we bring it back. Second 12, touchdown. Nullified penalty. Second goal at the 22. Touchdown. This time there's no penalties. This one counts as a touchdown.
Starting point is 00:17:28 Good Lord, Pittsburgh. You can't get away with that against Brady and Belichick. You're not going to get away with that Ravens team I saw yesterday. I mean, talent's great. But, man, at some point, Robert Downey grew up. Robert Downey got help. Robert Downey buttoned it up. I mean, at some point, you're just not going to win Super Bowls. Like the eight years three playoff wins.
Starting point is 00:17:50 By the way, couldn't score a touchdown in one of them, beat Matt Moore and the dolphins and the other one, and we're outplayed by the Bengals. The Bengals lost it more than you won it in the other one. But, I mean, yesterday is like, get it together. Lavian Bell's holdout's not the issue. This culture they've created that's all over the map is the issue. Joy Taylor with the news. No, no, no, no.
Starting point is 00:18:13 Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. That game had to end in a tie. Nobody wanted to win that game. I will say this. I'm a consumer. I'm watching on TV. I could not believe what I was watching.
Starting point is 00:18:27 No, it was, it was cartoonish. The ratings were great. It was, and by the way, it was raining, it was wet, it was windy. You're waiting for Baker Mayfield to come in. It was wildly entertaining. But if you're, again, you're Pittsburgh this morning. That felt like a loss. It was a loss.
Starting point is 00:18:44 It was definitely a loss. And it wasn't a win for Cleveland either. It was almost a win. Cleveland's getting better, though. They got some players. They've improved to tying people now as opposed to just lose. That's right. So Des Bryant's skills may not have been on display yesterday,
Starting point is 00:18:57 but his Twitter troll game is an all-pro forum. He called out his former team during and after the Cowboys' 16-8 loss of the Panthers. It's kind of cool calling out all the signals and knowing which route players are about to run. He later posted a laughing, crying, face emoji to a tweet that said offensive coordinators, Scott Linehan declined comments after the game. And then he finished taking shots by saying when someone suggests the Cowboys would have been when someone suggested the Cowboys would have been beaten the Panthers if they still had Des and kicker Dan Bailey. He tweeted real fact.
Starting point is 00:19:30 Now, this Cowboys scored eight points on one fourth quarter touchdown. It's the fewest points for Dallas in an opener since 2010. Now, can I just defend Dallas a little here? said this before the season started. Carolina's front seven defense is filthy good. Luke Keeckley's the best linebacker in football right now. I'm not sure you can even argue it. I mean, it's Luke Keeckley's amazing.
Starting point is 00:19:56 Shaq Thompson's amazing. So Carolina at home, they were six and two at home, two years ago, eight and home. Carolina is sneaky good at home. They've got a very, very good head coach. They're front seven defensively. outside of Philadelphia, you know, maybe Minnesota. So this is a team, which, by the way,
Starting point is 00:20:15 DAC didn't play joy in the preseason. So I don't want to, this is not what Dallas can look like all season. I don't think anyone should overreact to yesterday's loss. I mean, it wasn't great. It didn't look great. Right. It's an ugly loss. But I don't think it's going to be a reflection of the rest of the season.
Starting point is 00:20:31 Right. But if you're Des, what are you doing? Yeah, I don't think we should pay too much attention. to Twitter because Levy and Bell was on Twitter being silly. Well, let's get to that. So speaking of tweeting from the couch, Leveon forfeited his $855,000 game check to not play as he watched James Connor have a pretty impressive game against the Browns. He had two touchdowns.
Starting point is 00:20:53 After the game ended in a tie. He tweeted the face with a monocle emoji. And then he followed that tweet up with a response to someone asking him if he was throwing shade. And he said, no shade, just never witnessed a tie before. I don't think anyone's buying that. But, you know, for all this praise of James Connor, the Steelers did tie. And it was a disaster of a game if you're the Steelers. By the way, only about 10% of America is actually on Twitter and using it.
Starting point is 00:21:23 And we in the media tend to be more on Twitter than the public. I don't think we can overreact to Des and Lavian Bell being funny on Twitter. Like, Twitter should be more fun and less anger. So I saw that thing by Labian Bell and I'm like, it's catnip for us in the media. Sure. But it is kind of funny, right? No, it is funny. But, I mean, listen, Twitter is a vortex of insanity.
Starting point is 00:21:46 Okay, like, it's just, there's no way to ever actually interpret what's happening on Twitter. Right. And you can't tell if somebody's being sarcastic. It's a black hole of nonsense, really, is what Twitter is. But we love it. And it is a way for people to communicate how they, quote unquote, feel. But, like, Leveon in this spot, he's kind of making a joke
Starting point is 00:22:06 and that's fine. He can argue that if he was there, they would have won because we'll never know. And he wasn't there and they tied the rounds. But if Levy and Bell was available to me at the right number, I'd still get him. And if Des Bryant was available to me in week five and I had no receivers, I'd still go get him.
Starting point is 00:22:22 I'm not going to let a Twitter moment ruin those guys' careers. Like, if I need players, in this league, Aaron Rogers can play. I'll take him. I'm less bothered by I'm not bothered at all by what Levi-on. But what Des is doing, I just don't understand because it's like, let it go. Yeah, there's part of that.
Starting point is 00:22:42 I think that's who Des is. I don't think he's a let it go guy. You're probably right about that. Finally, Colts everywhere, Colts fans everywhere, breathes a sigh relief. Andrew Luck made his way on the field for the first time since 2016. And after the game, he was pretty up front about feeling overwhelmed with his return. I think overwhelmingly, I just felt grateful and appreciative to be here. and that may sound a little cheesy,
Starting point is 00:23:05 but I was so excited to get to run on the field as a cult and to get to play. And they get to play with Ty Why and Jack and Vinny and the new guys. So it was fun. And then the game got going and you're in the game. And it's one play at a time. Now, they did lose to Cincinnati.
Starting point is 00:23:26 By the way, going for the winning score. And Jack Doyle, everybody loves him in Indianapolis, had it hit, fumble, boom. Once again, Andrew Lux doing his part. At one point, Joey, it was 20 for 25. He was on fire. He didn't have one interception. Barely, early, I forgot all about it.
Starting point is 00:23:47 God. Can somebody help this kid win games? Does he have to carry this franchise for his entire career? He does. He probably does. God, he was on. I mean, you guys watched this. He was on fire.
Starting point is 00:23:57 And by the way, that cheap shot on him, wow. I mean, that was dangerous. Well, that's why they have the rule now. But it's good to see him back out there. Oh, it's great to see him. He can be a little nerdy. He's my nerd.
Starting point is 00:24:10 He's my nerd. I'll take the neck beard. I love Andrew Luck. Joy Taylor with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Hurd-Ly news. 13 years in the NFL,
Starting point is 00:24:23 four Pro Bowl, still the all-time career rusher at quarterback in the NFL and my friend. Mike Vick coming on the show today. You know what? Here's the thing. I honestly feel I don't get angry about sports a lot because my job, Joy and I are supposed to be like reporters, right? Correct.
Starting point is 00:24:41 And you're an athlete. You can get mad. You've got friends in the locker room. I try to stay out of the emotion. It makes me mad to see how little support Andrew Luck gets. Yeah. He had a GM that couldn't get him in O-line. He still doesn't have a running game. Cincinnati's got players.
Starting point is 00:24:57 He gets cheap-shot at yesterday. He's driving for the win and they fumble. as a guy that ran around, because, I mean, he's been banged up. What's your interpretation of Andrew Luck as a talent? I think he has all the talent in the world. It's about getting the talent around him. And obviously, the GM has to do his part. The players around him has to do their part.
Starting point is 00:25:18 But, you know, yesterday he played a great game. I honestly thought they was going to win a game. Yep. They didn't do enough. I think they had a fumble in the end that sealed the deal. Yeah. But, you know, Andrew Luck is a work in progress, and he'll continue to grow. He'll continue to get better.
Starting point is 00:25:35 I'm actually excited to see him out there. I was excited to see him running afield as a coach, too. I was just as excited as he was. Okay, I want to talk about Aaron Rogers. So my argument has been, listen, I have no problem. Chicago knows for the next five or six years they have to face Aaron Rogers twice a year. I'd overpay for Khalil Mack. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:25:52 And if I was Green Bay and knew the Bears wanted him, I'd overpay for him to keep him away from Aaron Rogers, who's off a collarbone surgery. So I'm watching that sack yesterday, and I'm thinking, Aaron Rogers came this close from being out for the year. The pressure on his leg, I don't care. I think certain times Mike's got to overpay for certain things.
Starting point is 00:26:12 I would have overpaid for Khalil Mack to keep him away from my quarterback Aaron Rogers. What do you think of Mac? It should have been 31 teams in line to make a trade for Khalil Mack. Whether it was the Green Bay Packers, whether it was the Chicago Bears, everyone had an opportunity, I think, if it made sense salary cap wise
Starting point is 00:26:33 or for whatever they could trade or whatever they could offer, he's a once in a lifetime talent. You know, he's a guy that you, for the rate of sake, you don't let him go. You do everything in your power to keep him. You know, if you're a team that has to face him, you want to do everything in your power to get him.
Starting point is 00:26:52 You think about Derek Thomas. You think about Lawrence Taylor, those type of talents. They come around once a decade. Once in a decade, and then you think about pairing him with Clay Matthews. It's a recipe for a championship. When you played, now you were the most mobile quarterback of my lifetime, okay? But a pass rush, now I want you to talk about times in your career. That as good as you were, because I watched Chicago last night,
Starting point is 00:27:19 and they got nothing but players on defense. Yeah. They got nothing but players. That defense is going to be for the day, and they're young. Yeah. I mean, this Roquan Smith. Calillo Mack has never missed a game. What does a pass rush do, even for you a mobile quarterback like Chicago?
Starting point is 00:27:34 It just gets you off the spot. You know, when you get guys who are constantly putting pressure on you, falling around your feet, knocking you down, helping you up, knocking you down again, it's not a good feeling. And it's no way to get in the rhythm. That's a great way to put it. You say it gets you off your spot. What do you mean?
Starting point is 00:27:54 You know, you always want to be a guy at the quarterback position that throw guys open. You know, it's important to be accurate because, you know, your 10 yard out, you know, the margin for error is really, really slim. You got a guy who's closing on them, and if it's not a zone defense, then, you know,
Starting point is 00:28:11 you got guys in man-to-man, and accuracy becomes, you know, really relevant. And if you can't do that, if you can't set your feet, if you can't get comfortable, which is a mental thing, then the accuracy goes out the window. Yeah, and that's what I, listen, Aaron Rogers
Starting point is 00:28:27 last night. This is a guy with two collarbone surgeries and was really close to having his season end last night. And Aaron is a magician, but he plays Minnesota this week, and if you fall behind to them, they got a guy that's better than Mitch Trubisky. I think what Chicago said is, we're just going to make
Starting point is 00:28:43 Aaron Rogers for the next five years as uncomfortable as we can. Just hit him. And we're just going to get him off his spot. We're going to get him out of it. Now, we may not beat him at Lambo much. But what I watched last night was Chicago getting Aaron Rogers. And this, by the way, Mack was on a snap count
Starting point is 00:28:59 last night. Yeah. He's not going to be on snap count in three weeks. Not all the time, yeah. So let me go to this. Rookie quarterback. So Cleveland's like we're not playing our rookie and Baltimore did for about a snap. Arizona got Shalak, couldn't score. I'm not going to play our rookie. And Buffalo, by the way, played their
Starting point is 00:29:15 rookie but didn't really want to play their rookie. And now the Jets tonight are saying, oh, no, we're going to start our rookie. Yeah, that's smart. Okay, go to, this is 2018. Now, you sat for your first year. Is it different now? Would you play these rookie quarterbacks. Yeah, I will play rookie quarterbacks because they have
Starting point is 00:29:31 a ton of time to get ready for the season. And you got mini-camps, you got OTAs, you got training camp, you got the pre-season. What teams tend to do is let the rookie guys go against the tools for the entire time,
Starting point is 00:29:47 whether there's mini-camp, OTAs, whatever, pre-season. You put them out there with the ones and just let them get the work in. Let them get the field for the game, get adjusted to the speed of the game. And by the time, by the time, the regular season come week one, he's acclimated. See, what they tend to do is protect those guys and think because they're so young that they're not ready.
Starting point is 00:30:06 When mentally, they're ready. And you have to find a way to get them ready. And that's the coach's job. But 2018, rookie quarterbacks needs to start unless there's a situation like Joe Flacko and Lamar Jackson where you have a proven veteran and you know Lamar's a talent that you want to develop. Yeah, he's more of a project. Yeah, he's a project.
Starting point is 00:30:26 By the way, Sam Darnold's the youngest starting rookie quarterback ever. So the Jets feels so good about Darnold. He's not only a rookie. He's the youngest rookie tonight ever to start week one in the NFL. And the Jets were like, we had Teddy Bridgewater. We'll trade him out. So the Jets of all the teams either feel that Darnold, it either proves that Darnold is way better than the other rookies
Starting point is 00:30:47 or it proves your point where the Jets are like, listen, we're not winning the Super Bowl anyway. Why not just get him out there and get him up to game speed and get him in a reps? I think he's going to take some lumps tonight, Monday night football on the road, in a dome. But I do think the Jets are good enough defensively to keep it close. Yeah, who knows?
Starting point is 00:31:03 Those are good reps, and he might play better than what we expect. The thing is, the ceiling is high for him. And I expect him to play well. I expect him to be prepared. And he showed that in preseason. And I'm excited for him. I'm excited for all the young quarterbacks is playing right now. Okay, so you know Andy Reed, and you were in Kansas City
Starting point is 00:31:21 to watch Patrick Mahomes. So you told me, you told me off the air. you said, listen, this guy, this guy's different. Yeah. Okay, so yesterday Peter Schrager on our show had some practice video that was ridiculous. Yeah, that we laughed at. It was funny, right? So I watched this Patrick Mahomes yesterday, and I came into the season, Mike, and my takeaway
Starting point is 00:31:39 was, I just don't know enough. I love Andy Reed and I love their players. I haven't seen them play enough. I'm watching that game, and I don't want to overreact on a Monday week one. Oh, man, like this is what you kept telling me you saw. Yeah, it's hard not to overreact. And look, Peter showed us the clips yesterday, and we looked at him. Okay, this is practice.
Starting point is 00:32:00 I've seen it before. It may have been Peter's first time seeing him, you know, actually get reps in practice or, you know, do some of the things that I know he's special at. But it's not evident until you go out and do it on the field. His last game in Demp, last season, last game he played against Denver. He really played well. Yeah. You know, pass-a-raying over 100, you know, games.
Starting point is 00:32:24 Andy the confidence to put him out there to trade Alex Smith and give him an opportunity, give him a shot. And yesterday he showed us why. God, he's got a great arm. That it was worth every minute. It's so funny. Like, I like Dak, and there are quarterbacks I like, but you watch Trubisky and you watch Dak, and you watch Patrick Mahomes. Michael.
Starting point is 00:32:44 He has all the tools. His arm, he's flicking that thing downfield. He made some throws that I wish I could have made. Really? I mean, I think about some of the passes. opportunities that I had that, you know, the ones that you don't get a chance to get back. And like, wow, you know, that's when you know a guy is an exceptional talent. And Andy know how to pick him.
Starting point is 00:33:06 I will say that he knows quarterback. Yeah, he does. And I will say this is that Kansas City is one of the great NFL towns in America. People forget this. The Golden State Warriors were awful for 30 years, but people didn't give up their season tickets. San Francisco has always been a great NBA town. Kansas City's been, they never reward their fans with the big wins. That is a great NFL town.
Starting point is 00:33:30 This morning you wake up in Kansas City and you're like, we got our guy for 13 years. You've got your guy. By the way, and the ceiling is a mile high with him. Wow. And it's not a guy that you got through trade. It's not a guy that you just brung in to play four or five games and fill a void. This is a franchise quarterback, something that the Chiefs haven't had in the long. time. That you feel that it's literally, you can go toe to toe to toe to toe to. By the way,
Starting point is 00:34:00 I'm watching Dallas and Carolina. Everybody's paying attention to the Cowboys. You know, I watched this Cam offense and I mean, listen, the guy is Superman. He's like 6-6, 250. Can you, he's, Cam's never had back-to-back winning seasons. And my takeaway is this offense they run in Carolina, can you win Super Bowls? Can you be an 11-win team year in and year out with that office? It feels like It's 40% college to me. Yeah, you know, I think Norv has to, you know, show some type of innovation. I think, you know, the way Cam plays and the things that he can do and what he, what he offer to the offensive side of the ball is, you know, what a lot of the teams are doing now, I like Kansas City, Chicago Bears, you know, a lot of move, a ton of movement. And just, you know, getting your speed guys in space, your guys with talent.
Starting point is 00:34:51 Do you think Cam still runs it too much, though? I think he runs when he have to. Okay, so you're okay with his running. Yes, I'm okay with his running, but I think the offense should be centered around getting the guys, you know, who are the speed guys, the guys who are multi-talented, putting the ball in their hands, whether it's on the edge or just in space. And, you know, it's not all about the traditional drop-back game with Cam. I think he has to...
Starting point is 00:35:14 You got to take what he has. Yeah, you got to take what he has and build around it. And, you know, I don't know if no of it's capable of doing that. Norve does like the ball down the field. Yeah, which is good at times. Yeah, Cam can throw a great deep ball. It's funny, we're all beating up on the Cowboys, and I watch Cam and Carolina, and I'm like,
Starting point is 00:35:31 it just, it's a real high, low. I'm just, you start watching some of these offenses in the NFL that are so efficient, so pure, so explosive. Carolina feels like with Cam, they need that front seven deep. They're going to win. Carolina's going to win a lot of games like what you saw yesterday. Yeah. That's how they're going to win.
Starting point is 00:35:49 Because I don't, I just don't feel with. Cam sometimes is accuracy. You're not dropping 34 points a weekend with Cam. But with a great defense, you can win a bunch of that stuff what I saw yesterday. Yeah, and they don't, I don't think they have a true number one receive. I know Funches plays well, you know, at times. McCaffrey is a guy that you'll have to feed a majority of the time.
Starting point is 00:36:09 He'll probably lead the team in receptions. Hopefully he won't, but he's a talent that you have to, you know, take advantage of. So, you know, I think he'll be the guy that can pick up the slack. but Cam's going to have to move the ball around and they're going to have to have some trickery. They're going to have to just put guys in a position where they create the mismatches.
Starting point is 00:36:32 Yeah. Michael Vic, four pro Bulls, all-time leading rusher at quarterback in the NFL. Great seeing you, bud. Coming up next, I know we're blown away by Aaron Rogers again. But did you notice who didn't need dramatics again? That's next. It's the herd. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd.
Starting point is 00:36:49 Weekdays at noon Eastern 9 a. Pacific. Here is something that fans don't know about, and there's no way for you to know about, but because I've talked to several players through the years that have played with the Green Bay Packers about Aaron Rogers, they will tell you that a lot of times he
Starting point is 00:37:05 doesn't audible out of certain blitzes. Aaron feels so much confidence in his ability. He won't audible out of stuff. Aaron will be like I'll make it happen. So here's what's funny yesterday. Everybody's in love with Aaron. Aaron gets hurt. Aaron with a comeback. Aaron with a drama.
Starting point is 00:37:21 Aaron with a magical arm, Tom Brady didn't have to have a major comeback because Tom Brady was up 26 at half against the defense that's even better than Chicago's. I mean, I like the Chicago Bears defense, but Houston's guy, JJ Watt and Clownie and merciless, and they're better than Chicago's front, and Tom never gets hit. Because Tom is the best quarterback in the league at stuff you don't know about called pre-snap. and for the first time in his six-year career, Tyron Matthew, Honey Badger played against Tom Brady. And he said after the game, he goes, he's everything I thought he would be. He has a great understanding of pre-snap and post-snap assignments.
Starting point is 00:38:02 He did a lot of great things for his team today. By the way, eight different receivers caught a ball. This is why Tom Brady doesn't get hit. Houston comes into a game with like pro-bowl-level players up front. They never touch him. They don't touch him. They don't get a hand on him. Why?
Starting point is 00:38:18 Because this is something fans can't possibly know about. I'm not blaming fans, but you can't possibly know about it. You're not looking at film, and you don't have a bunch of guys in your Rolodex who played in the league. Tom audibles out of all of it. That's why Tom's up at half. That's why Tom doesn't get hurt. That's why Tom doesn't have surgeries. That's why Tom.
Starting point is 00:38:36 Aaron Rogers gets hurt more because Aaron Rogers doesn't audible out of pressure. He just sort of wings it, and he's so naturally gifted. And the media loves him. There's no question. Aaron Rogers is far more dramatic than Aaron. than Tom Brady. He's got the big arm. He's got the famous girlfriend.
Starting point is 00:38:52 He's got the Lambeau. He's got the arm. He's on a card. He leaves the field. He's a hero. He's coming back. Then the announcers are going crazy. They're comparing him to Willis Reed.
Starting point is 00:39:01 And it's like, have you ever noticed that happens a lot with Aaron Rogers? Have you ever noticed that? A lot of drama with Aaron? Well, that's because, Colin, the Patriots have better offensive lines. Oh, actually, I looked it up this morning. Aaron Rogers in the last decade has had twice as many pro-bowl offensive linemen as Tom Brady. Well, it's Bill Belichick, who was fired in Cleveland without Brady and 5 and 11 in New England before Brady started. Bill Belichick's career as a head coach stinks without Tom Brady.
Starting point is 00:39:39 Like this is something fans don't see. Brady goes to the line, sees the pressure. sure and audibles out of it. The audibles out of it. Aaron Rogers walks to the line. Little cocky, very confident. I'll make something happen. The downside is you get hit more,
Starting point is 00:39:57 you get sat on more, you roll out of the pocket and get hit more. I'm not saying Aaron didn't have pure talent, but John Elway was always more talent than Joe Montana. Joe Montana got to and won more Super Bowls. Brady's been to eight. Aaron's been to one. There's a reason for it.
Starting point is 00:40:17 Rogers has had more pro bowlers on the offensive line. It's not like Rogers Division has always been tough. Detroit's dysfunctional. Bears have been awful. Minnesota's hot and cold. Never can find, you know, the perfect quarterback. They've run through coaches too. So, you know, this is a classic example where once again on a Monday,
Starting point is 00:40:34 we're just slobbering over Aaron Rogers. Another comeback, another injury. Tom, you know what he is? Aaron Rogers is Elon Musk and Tesla. genius, amazing, highs, new car, changing the world. Rockets, Tesla, pot, internet, podcast, what the... And Brady's Warren Buffett, Berkshire Hathaway. Never any drama.
Starting point is 00:41:04 Decade after decade of 15% returns. Don't see him in the news. Still lives in the same house in Omaha. It's not building rock. pockets, not smoking pot on podcasts, not crashing the stock price. I mean, it's like I get why Elon Musk, remember, the media is addicted to interesting. It's catnip. Colin Kaepernick story, media goes crazy.
Starting point is 00:41:31 None of my buddies ever talk about Colin Kaepernick. They want to talk about football. And Aaron Rogers is like catnip. I mean, he's just the looks and the arm and the plays. Brady's just 10%, 12% returns, 10% old, never. cool. I mean, he's got married to a supermodel, yet Aaron Rogers is the cool guy. I mean, Brady's
Starting point is 00:41:50 just like, I'm a family guy, I love football, I watch film. He's just Warren Buffett, baby. There's no cool unless, of course, you consider getting to Super Bowl's cool, which I do. Call and right, calling wrong next. One more herd? The herd streams 24 hours a day
Starting point is 00:42:06 seven days a week within the IHeart radio app. Search Herd to listen live or on demand whenever you'd like. Ah! this is the herd. It's a Monday, wherever you may be and however you may be listening, live in Los Angeles. Iheart Radio, Fox Sports Radio, and FS1. Joy Taylor is joining me on a Monday.
Starting point is 00:42:29 We love this time of the year. Greg Jennings will talk about what he saw with the Packers and the Bears last night, Tony Gonzalez. By the way, tonight we got Rams, Raiders, and the Sam Darnold play. This is as excited as I am for a Monday night football, Because every year, week, one on Monday Night Football, they give you two games. Usually one's a stinker. I get Sam Darnold and I get Rams, John Gruden, Raiders.
Starting point is 00:42:52 Well, generally, usually the Lions Jets would not be the most exciting. But we got a little thing happening with my Jets. You have a little bit invested in Sam Darnold at this point. All right, every Monday during the football season, for the next seven or eight minutes, where Colin was right, where Colin was wrong. I love doing this. hope you enjoyed as much as we do. Let's go. Where Colin was right?
Starting point is 00:43:16 Yeah, Kille-Mack, I'm not sure if you noticed. He's sort of good. Listen, his first half was the single greatest first half that a defensive player has ever had. Fumble recovery, sack, force fumble, and a pick six. In fact, as a game, that's the greatest play. That's the greatest game. A defensive player has had in this league. He did it in a half. but it's the greatest game a defensive player has had in this league since Khalil Mack did it as a raider. Listen, when you play in a division with Aaron Rogers,
Starting point is 00:43:52 you've got to overpay for pass rushers. He is a superstar, and unlike the really talented JJ Watt, Khalil Mack is never hurt. He put out that line last night, and he had a snap count. Like they pulled him out. You could see he was exonauting. by the second half. I salute the bears for going after him, and I think with Mitch Trubisky's
Starting point is 00:44:16 your quarterback, you have to equal the playing field, level it out, and Khalil Mack was the answer. Where Colin was wrong. I've never thought Dak Prescott's a top 10 talent. I was surprised how good he got his first couple of years, and he doesn't have much to work with wide receiver or tight end. But eight of his last 11 games, he has not thrown for 200 yards. And that offensive line is way better than average. One of the things I like about DAC, his leadership qualities, but I have to be
Starting point is 00:44:46 fair here. Part of leading, is leading your team into the end zone. And I know he didn't have a great receiving core, but you know what? Quarterbacks have to make receivers, with very few exceptions. Obviously, Randy Moss is good with almost everybody.
Starting point is 00:45:02 It's a quarterback's job to elevate wide receivers. That's what Brady does. It's what Breeze does. And it's what Aaron Rogers does. And DAC was really, really below average yesterday. Where Colin was right? I didn't understand it. I still think it's a mistake.
Starting point is 00:45:19 The Giants could have had Sam Darnold. They passed on him for a running back. Yes, Sequin Barclay's a really, really good player. But Eli Manning is old and he plays old. And without Odell Beckham as a target yesterday, Eli Manning's passer rating was 50. Listen, you can put all the icing you want around Eli Manning, left tackle, Sequin Barclay, O'Dell Beckham.
Starting point is 00:45:43 Eli Manning right now is not very good, and he's only solid when he has OBJ. I wouldn't have paid OBJ that much, but I wouldn't have passed on Sam Darnold. Once the Giants said, we're going to stay with Eli Manning, you are forced to pay for O'Dell Beckham. Because O'Dell Beckham elevates Eli to passable to B minus C plus. But this is, you know, again, Barkley was great. But you're going up against Carson Wentz twice a year. And now Alex Smith is in the division. And look around the NFC, all these great quarterbacks.
Starting point is 00:46:17 Rams offense, the Packers offense. I'm sorry. Like Eli Manning is a shot fighter. Where Colin was wrong. I will never make fun of Ryan Fitzpatrick and Ryan Fitzpatrick's beard again. Is he a franchise quarterback? I'm going to pass on him. But as a spot starter, I've watched them on seven different teams,
Starting point is 00:46:41 and on every one of those teams, he's done this multiple times. 75% completion, right? 400 yards, 4 TDs, no picks. He even had a world-class run. Listen, again, the Harvard kids, big enough, strong enough. He's not a world-class talent. But I was sitting there watching that game yesterday. He is more than competent.
Starting point is 00:47:03 And if you're Tampa Bay and you're watching that, is part of you thinking to yourself, how invested do we want to get in James Winston? I'm not sure James Winston's played that good. And again, I'm not building my franchise about Ryan Fitzpatrick, but that is not the first time he's done that. He is a highly competent NFL spot starting quarterback. No more making fun of him.
Starting point is 00:47:26 We're done making fun of him? Never again. It's like in England, he is Sir Ryan Fitzpatrick. Oh, wow. This is not overreaction. Monday at all. But I will say though, if you are Tampa, you did build your team around James
Starting point is 00:47:41 and that it's not turned out to be you know you're not going to get any dysfunction with Ryan Fitzpatrick. I've never seen Winston do that. Go into that dome and literally outplay Drew Breeze. I think Winston has a higher ceiling than Ryan Fitzpatrick, but I don't get it. I get it about one at every four Sundays.
Starting point is 00:47:58 Where Colin was right. I love college football, but the reason the NFL is king is the parody. Do you see the scores yesterday? Did you see the finishes yesterday? In college football, you take the top 10-15 teams, nine of the games, maybe 12 or blowouts. I mean, Alabama will be in a competitive game maybe twice this year.
Starting point is 00:48:19 I mean, I watched these college football games. The NFL yesterday was unbelievable. Who's going to win the NFC? I have no idea. I can't tell you who's going to win the NFC North. I don't know who's going to win the NFC South. I mean, seriously, Saints and Falcons have lost. Carolina won.
Starting point is 00:48:34 but I think Carolina's third, but are they, they have the best front seven. Yesterday was a classic example why the NFL is king. On any given Sunday, you have no idea what you're getting. The only game, and I'll get to it in a second, it was one game I love that was a blowout. After that, it was 12 to 14 games. Even that Indy Colts game, it looks like the Colts got hammered. They were driving for a winning score before a fumble.
Starting point is 00:49:01 Where Colin was wrong. Last week I said there's four NFL teams with a chip on their shoulder. I think they're going to come out of the gate roaring. Saints Falcons Chargers were three of those four teams and they looked awful. Chargers. Did you watch film? Tyreek Hills, good. You may want to cover him.
Starting point is 00:49:20 You may not want to kick to him. Saints, I don't know what that was. Falcons, you look soft. Now, Baltimore won, but the three out of the four teams that I really thought got really close last year and they looked pretty good in preseason. And they would come out with their hair on. fire, the Chargers, the Saints, and the Falcons, and I got to tell you, I'm not going to overreact, but what I saw from the Chargers, and that's just disappointing, that game was over, fast.
Starting point is 00:49:46 They were playing catch-up eight minutes into the game at home. They just can't beat Kansas City. Where Colin was right? I don't predict routes ever in Blazing Five. For the first time in a long time, I said, Baltimore is going to annihilate Buffalo. And they did. I predicted 31, 13, I was being kind. Here's what I know about Baltimore. They may lose to Big Ben and Brady and great quarterbacks. You get Baltimore at home against the bad quarterback. They are Mike Tyson against Peter McNeeley.
Starting point is 00:50:17 It is an utter mismatch. Nathan Peterman had a zero-zero-parating. That was, in all the years I've been doing Blazing Five, the single time I predicted a route and woke up Sunday morning and had no doubt in my mind, would be bloodshed. That was 40 to nothing. That was a college football. That was
Starting point is 00:50:40 Bama for about eight of their games yesterday. Where Colin was wrong. I told you Andrew Luck. I watched them in preseason and I said, listen, he took two years off. He doesn't quite look like he's Andrew Luck. I just don't quite, well, I was wrong on that. 39 of 53, after almost having his head
Starting point is 00:50:59 taken off early in the game, he was on his way to the game-winning drive, but you know, the Colts always let him. him down. He got very little help in the running game. I will say this. The Colts defensive line is better than people think. Their defensive lines actually got some players. But when I watched yesterday, he looked as sharp as he has ever looked at one point in the game. And the Bengals have players. The Bengals have elite defensive players. At one point, he was 20 of 25 against that pass rush and that secondary with no running game. Andrew Luck looked amazing.
Starting point is 00:51:34 where Colin was right said it before Pete Carroll should have embraced Russell Wilson not Michael Bennett not Richard Sherman not defensive stars once again Russell Wilson running for his life Seattle offensive line completely overwhelmed potential dynasties are not supposed to be this bad this quick and Denver's about the 7th the 8th best team the Seahawks will play this year. Russell Wilson, two rookie running backs for Denver, ate up, eight up Seattle's defense. They got way too much into chatter.
Starting point is 00:52:19 The minute Russell Wilson arrived, he should have been the centerpiece of this organization, and every move afterwards should have been to protect Russell Wilson, draft left tackles, draft great centers, get him a running game. Instead, they put him on an island, surrounded by mostly junk. They spent too much money on defense, and they are not even a top third team in the NFL.
Starting point is 00:52:43 That dynasty, it is not even over. It is not even close to happening. They're miles from teams like the Rams and the Vikings in terms of overall talent. Where Colin was wrong. Herm Edwards, Arizona State's 2 and O. I just thought it was a bad fit. I mean, NFL guy, never coached Colin. college, been out of coaching for years.
Starting point is 00:53:07 Didn't pay that much attention to college. He got a job. He was good friends with the athletic director there. I mean, I like Herm, Herm's a friend. Herm's a great guy, but I just didn't think it would work. And I watched them this weekend. I'll tell you something. Michigan State's pretty good team. And they're a little loose.
Starting point is 00:53:23 The quarterback's calling out dudes. But Arizona State's okay. Arizona State's 2 and O. Arizona State's fun to watch. And, you know, Herm may be a great man. motivational speaker, but when I watch him, I'm like, they look pretty well coached. I mean, they're not going to be Washington or Stanford in the PAC 12. They are way better.
Starting point is 00:53:44 I thought that was a real chance for man overboard with Arizona State. That's not fun to watch. They're a pretty good football team. They get after it. They got good quarterback. Where Colin was right. Finally, Levian Bell was gone. And James Connor had 192 scrimmage yards.
Starting point is 00:54:01 I said it before. We all make choices. and I tell my kids that choice you make it 12 years old, 13 years old, 14 years old, be very careful about the choice because it's going to affect your life. Don't do dumb stuff and choose carefully. And if you choose to be a running back as a football player, unless you're Todd Gurley and you have a young quarterback and the team really needs you and you play in L.A. and they got a lot of money,
Starting point is 00:54:24 Lavian Bell is a very good football player. In this league right now, he's really replaceable. And I'm not going to pay 90% of these running backs the money they want, especially if I have Big Ben in that offensive line and Antonio Brown and Juju Smith-Schuster, Pittsburgh got to spend some money on defense. Pittsburgh's issues defense. They got more than enough offensive start.
Starting point is 00:54:43 James Conner's good enough. And I said, I like Levian Bell. But if I had Pittsburgh's receivers, O-line, Big Ben, I'm not paying a running back big money. And yesterday, they tied Cleveland. It wasn't because of James Connor. He was fine. He was fine.
Starting point is 00:55:00 992 scrimmage yards. He was not the issue. Picks were. All right. Coming up next, I thought two NFL teams showed you what they truly thought of their quarterback. And it's not a very good thing. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports Radio, FS1, and the IHeart Radio app. When Cousin-South-Ferman and Clay Travis and Rachel Beneta get together, all bets are on.
Starting point is 00:55:35 Lock It In is the all-new, one-of-a-kind sports gambling show, weekdays at 4.30 p.m. Eastern on FS1 and the Fox Sports Act. Rachel Benetta, way to go, Rach. I got Clay Travis. Todd Furman used to run Caesar Sportsbook. I remember I had dinner with him 10 years ago. Cousin Sal is a writer on Jimmy Kimmel's show, and Clay's got Outkick. It's that popular website. Nose is gambling. These people know they're gambling.
Starting point is 00:55:59 Gambling is good for you, kids. You need to gamble. I don't listen to your parents. Got an extra $10. You owe out there and put it on the Rams tonight. Love the Rams tonight. I'm fired up to watch that show. Greg Jennings around the corner.
Starting point is 00:56:14 So when it comes to football, teams will tell you what they think of their quarterback. They'll tell you. You just have to pay attention. So I'm watching Mitch Trubisky last night. Now, the coach of the Bears now is Matt Nagy. That's an Andy Reid guy. Andy Reid scripts plays, his first 10 plays.
Starting point is 00:56:33 Matt Nagy scripted plays for Mitch Trebisky. And he was like seven for seven opening drive. He looks great. And there's nothing wrong with scripting plays. Trebisky looked very good in the first half, because you can script a lot of the first half. But in the second half, with a lead, they got really conservative. They would not take the little floaties off his arm in the pool. It was like, okay, let's do these plays, let's throw underneath. That tells you what the bears think about Mitch Trubesky. He's limited. By the way, Alex Smith under Andy Reid was great in the first half, 99 quarterback rating,
Starting point is 00:57:12 but in the second half under Andy Reid, Alex Smith was not as good. The passing yards went down in the second half. His TD interception ratio was not nearly as good, and his passing rating went down. Because Alex Smith, very coachable, was a tremendous first half quarterback. But in the second half, it's about, okay, you've got to go off script a lot. How much talent do you have? That's where Aaron Rogers flourishes.
Starting point is 00:57:37 And if you look at Rogers and Trabisky in the fourth quarter, and by the way, it's not like Mitch Trabisky. Aaron was playing on one leg in the fourth. Tribusky was healthy. And look at their numbers. That's the difference. Tribusky was great with scripted plays. Then he had a passer rating of 53 in the fourth quarter.
Starting point is 00:57:57 And by the way, playing with a lead in the fourth quarter. So Aaron's playing from behind. The bear's defense is better than Green Bay. The Bears know Aaron Rogers has to throw. Off script, Aaron's great. In fact, you could argue the problem with Aaron, he's not always great on script. He ad-libs out of script. But Aaron shows you what coaches are looking for.
Starting point is 00:58:20 I'll make scripts early, then you do your stuff later. Tribusky, the minute he's off script, they got super conservative. They don't trust him. They're telling you that as a staff. We've had him here for a year. We don't trust him in big spots to make the throws down the first. field. We think he's limited. That offense is mostly a college offense. And I saw this yesterday with the New York Giants. The New York Giants are telling you what they think about Eli Manning. Just pay
Starting point is 00:58:45 attention. Number one is they spend a ton of money on Nate Sold or left tackle. They draft an offensive lineman. They used their second pick on a running back of which there were nine good ones in the draft. There were 20 running backs drafted overall. So there were plenty of running backs. They went out and got one. Then they paid a fortune for a perimeter player, Odell Beckham, who's been hurt 17 times in four years. The Giants are telling you, Eli's limited. They're telling you, I mean, the giants are telling you, what do they do all off-season? Left tackle, draft the guard, running back, pay a fortune for a sometimes emotionally inconsistent and physically inconsistent wide receiver who's a small perimeter player. So when I watch the bears, they're telling you what
Starting point is 00:59:31 they think of Trebeske. They don't trust him. They're not taking those floaties off. They don't trust him in the pool by himself. They just don't. That's with a lead. And the Giants are telling you what they think of Eli Manning. Man, he needs a lot of help.
Starting point is 00:59:46 He needs a lot of help. And that's why I've said in this league is, once you get the quarterback right, just pay him whatever. Just figured out. Just pay him whatever. But I think in the Giants case, they know they got a shot fighter. That's why they're spending all this money on left tackles.
Starting point is 01:00:05 That's why they're taking running backs with the number two picking a draft that had 20 drafted running backs. And that's why they signed O'Dell Beckham. Because they know without O'Dell, Eli's not really a starting quarterback in the league. Joy Taylor with the news. No, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news.
Starting point is 01:00:22 Speaking of quarterbacks that should not be starting in the league, Nathan Peterman or Nathan Perlman, whatever you prefer, has struggled a bit, a little bit, this time with Buffalo. He had five picks in the first half against the Chargers last season. And the bills still felt confident enough to trade away Tyrod Taylor and go with Peterman as their number one quarterback this season. And to no one's shock, the bills got just what they asked for with a disaster. Peterman managed five completions on 18 attempts in total just 24 yards. That was awful. Miraculously, Sean McDermott is still not sure, though.
Starting point is 01:00:54 The game got away from us because of a series of plays early in the game, be it the first or second quarter than right before half as well. But we've got to go back and look at the film and be critical of and be objective of what we were doing. Yes, it got away from you a little bit there. Let's take a look at Nathan Peterman's career stats as a starter, shall we? He started three games, completion percentage, 38.1 percent, 49 yards per game. Touchdown interception ratio is pretty good there.
Starting point is 01:01:25 One to seven. This past rating is 16.8. And he has yet to finish a game. I feel, you know, I don't like, I don't mind being critical of quarterbacks when they're competent. I don't like being critical of quarterbacks when it's sad. Well, this is not Nathan Peterman's fault. I know, but it's really, it's just, that was, that looked like a college offense against an NFL defense. But it's not Nathan Peterman's fault.
Starting point is 01:01:49 They had Tyrod Taylor. They hadn't been to the, to the playoffs in how many years? Yeah, the Buffalo Bills yesterday, it's fairly clear that Tarad Taylor wasn't their problem. Right. He was not your problem. That was truly not the root of your issues. Yes. Yeah, that was something else yesterday.
Starting point is 01:02:07 But it did make your Ravens confidence look very good. I don't know. If you consider that. I'm two and two on my blazing five. I have the Jets in six and a half. There was only one game yesterday. I knew I would win. Baltimore minus a touchdown at home against Buffalo.
Starting point is 01:02:22 Buffalo is just offensively. I'm not joking when I say this. There are college offenses right now. that have several players that could start for Buffalo. It's a really bad offense. That was really bad. So Aaron Rogers put on his inner Iron Man last night or John Snow, back from the dead, whatever you want to call it.
Starting point is 01:02:42 After leaving with a knee injury and getting on the cart, he came back to leave the Packers to an amazing comeback. And he also had this great quote after the game. This is what we're paid to do. You know, we're paid to deal with injuries and play through them. That's the measure of a team. teammate is what are you willing to put on the line for your team? He is getting, I think, what is it, 80 million guaranteed?
Starting point is 01:03:06 And he deserves every penny of it. He does. That might be a little motivation for him to get back out there. Although, obviously, if he was physically incapable of being back out there, it's like, it's a season-ending injury. I don't think he would. But he was clearly in pain. Oh, God, yeah.
Starting point is 01:03:24 And clearly in a situation where I think, I honestly believe if that contract had just happens, they may have been like, Let's just be a little cautious. It was funny because the announcers, Alan, Chris, last night were like, do you put him back in if it's, and I'm like, no, no, Aaron can score. Like, did anybody doubt watching that game? McCarthy and Aaron Rogers, they were like four minutes in the game before he took the last drive. And they were on the side.
Starting point is 01:03:49 McCarthy never smiles on the sideline. And McCarthy and Aaron, something they said, they started laughing. And I'm like, that's because everybody in the building knows. This is what Aaron does. One leg or not. And Khalil Mack, by the way, was gas by that point. Right. So he wasn't the fact where he wasn't the first half.
Starting point is 01:04:06 I don't know, though. I mean, Khalil Mack had the greatest, what, the greatest game by a defensive player ever. Best half ever, tied for the best game ever, and tied with him. Tied with himself. Yeah. It's a little motivation to maybe just make sure he's 100% okay. But I'm sure we'll get more information on what happened to him today. So Nick Sabin loves rewriting the record books.
Starting point is 01:04:25 After beating Arkansas State over the weekend, they remain the top team in the nation, which means the Crimson Tide have now been ranked number one during 106 different weeks in the 82-year history of the Associated Press poll. That means they passed Ohio State for the most of all time. Yeah, and it's not slowing down. No, and it was a pretty good weekend. Clemson, A&M game was great. That was a crazy game. You were right about Stanford USC.
Starting point is 01:04:49 Yes, LSU Auburn play this weekend. That'll be very good. You also mentioned Arizona State. Yeah, Arizona State was fun. I watched a little bit of that and then had to go to bed. And then Kentucky beat Florida. That was a shocker. Yes.
Starting point is 01:05:01 But Florida's got a brand new coat. First year for any new coach, pass. I don't want to bang on. Just slow down. No need to bang on them, but it's still a good program. And it's a good win by Kentucky. Huge win by Kentucky. Joy of the news.
Starting point is 01:05:15 Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The herd line news. Dollar Shave Club, amazing. Shower, gel, oral care. Yes, shaving products. Dollar Shaveclub.com. And $5.com.
Starting point is 01:05:24 Col.I. And five bucks. They have a starter set right now. and let's go to New York via the Coward Global Satellite Network. Ten years, multiple pro-Buller Super Bowl ring. So I'm watching that Kaleo Mac thing last night, Greg. And I'm like, okay, we were like two inches from that. And it wasn't Kaleel, but from a sack on Aaron Rogers and his season is over.
Starting point is 01:05:47 And my takeaway last night, Green Bay won, but what they really did was escape. I said this last week and I feel more strongly today. I would rather have Khalil Mack on my team if I was Green Bay than face him nine times now in the next five years minimum. If I'm Aaron Rogers, I'm looking at that defensive run in Khalil Mack and I'm like, I don't want any part of that. What was your takeaway on what you watch with Khalil and Aaron? I agree.
Starting point is 01:06:13 I agree 100%. I think if you were to ask Aaron Rogers that in a sit-down one-on-one, he would disclose that as well. Anytime you have a guy who can impact against, the way you can, you being Aaron Rogers, you want to play with that guy. And that's Khalil Mack. I mean, he one single-handedly almost beat the Packers in one half until Aaron Rogers came back from life, from the dead or from injury or whatever and then snatch the life out of the Chicago Bears.
Starting point is 01:06:47 But if I am an Oakland fan, if I am a Raider teammate, a former teammate of Khalil Mack, in that building. And I'm watching this game last night. I'm so disturbed, upset, disgruntled with management that we didn't bring this guy back in to be in that black and silver and black. There is no excuse to let a player like this go.
Starting point is 01:07:11 Chicago, obviously, they wanted a player that can cover a multitude of mistakes or sins, if you will, at the quarterback position or offensively. And they got it in Khalil Mack. because he's going to win some ball games for them. We clearly saw what he's able to do off of two or three or four practices to prepare.
Starting point is 01:07:31 By the way, you're going to get after me on this, but what makes Brady great is that Tom, I've been told this by guys who have played with him, is that Tom audibles out of sacks. Yesterday he faced JJ Watt, he faced Clowny. Houston's defensive front is a nightmare, and they don't touch him.
Starting point is 01:07:50 Because Tom goes to the line and he's not stubborn. He's not going to ad lib. He will audible out of sacks. Aaron, I've been told by guys who have played with him, not even you that have played with him. Guys have told me a lot of times Aaron, he's not going to be audible out of a play.
Starting point is 01:08:07 Aaron's going to go to the line, and he's just going to say, I'm going to make this puppy work. And I look at everybody this morning loves Aaron Rogers. But he's not going to last to 39 years old. He's 34 now. Forget 40. At some point, Aaron's taken a beating here.
Starting point is 01:08:21 Is he not? I mean, I'm watching him yesterday. These are too many hits. He's getting hit too much. Brady doesn't get hit. Some of that's just Tom. Three snap audibles better, is it not? Let's Colin.
Starting point is 01:08:35 Whoa, wait a minute. Number one, he does audible out of plays. He tries to get the team in the best play possible. But you've got to understand when you audible out of plays, basically what you're audibling to is a set play. And so the more you do that, the more teams pending the formation, you're going to go to that audible again. You're going to check.
Starting point is 01:09:00 Aaron is more of a signal audibular. So he's not changing the entire play or the protection. He's changing subtle things. He's changing either one half or one receiver on his left or a couple combo guys on his right. But yeah, why am I going to audible out of a play when I feel like we can make this work. You get your guy, you take care of your one-on-one matchup,
Starting point is 01:09:22 I'll take care of the rest. That's all I need you to do. So get it done. When you have a guy like that, as Stephen A on the other network calls him a bad man, which he is, you can get away with not audibly. Look, the offense yesterday last night,
Starting point is 01:09:40 after he got back from that injury, was condensed. You knew he wasn't going to go out the pocket. you knew there wasn't going to be any play action because he didn't want the ball in his hand that long, and he still picked you apart. He is the best quarterback that you have ever seen, regardless if you want to admit it or not, that I have ever seen, that we are all ever seen. This is a talent that can't be matched.
Starting point is 01:10:06 By the way. I'm very critical of Aaron Rogers. Not what I just heard. I hear you're putting a guy with one Super Bowl over a guy with eight. What's wrong with coach ability? The audit bowling playing with us. No, no. No, I'm not putting, I get the decoration and all the rings that Tom Brady has won for his team and himself.
Starting point is 01:10:30 Not to be, not to demine or to take credit away from what he's able to do as a collective team. Brady was ridiculous yesterday. Brady, Brady is always ridiculous. But if we're saying that Tom Brady is a better quarterback, athletically, physically, all these things. This is what you need to play the game. We would be lying. We would flat out be lying.
Starting point is 01:11:00 If Tom Brady went down with a knee injury and came back in the game, nothing changes for him because that's where he sits. He sits in the pocket. He's going to think you, he's going to pick you apart. That's his game. But for Aaron Rogers to take away his legs, what we perceive to be one of his greatest strengths to get outside the pocket, extend the plays, and still be even more accurate than even when inside the pocket, you take that away, you expect some type of letdown, some type of decrease in performance. Well, we didn't see that last night. The Bears didn't see that last night.
Starting point is 01:11:36 They were hopeful, and they got burned. That's who you're talking about right now. That's what you're, Aaron Rogers is the best quarterback in the NFL. Well, a lot of guys fall for sizzle. I'm like Warren Buffett. Just give me 10% returns in year. You're like Bitcoin. You get rich.
Starting point is 01:11:52 You lose it all. You're up. You're down. Greg Jennings, you like Bitcoin. You like sports cars. I like a good Oldsmobile. 56 miles an hour, never getting a speeding ticket. That's who I am.
Starting point is 01:12:04 Very proud of it. High risk. High risk, high reward. Yeah. Eight Super Bowls won. Anyway, so Eli Manning, I'm watching him yesterday, and I don't think they should have drafted a running back. I like Barclay.
Starting point is 01:12:17 But I think the New York Giants, I honestly believe this. They just don't want to get into bashing a Manning, and they didn't like the pushback last year. They didn't like the blowback when they benched Eli, and it freaked him out, and they don't want to do it. But I'm watching Eli yesterday. It doesn't matter, OBJ. It doesn't matter about Barclay.
Starting point is 01:12:33 I'm sorry, Greg. I just don't see it. He missed multiple open receivers. I mean, you played in this league. What do you see with ELA, Eli, what am I missing? Colin, I agree. I was so disturbed at Eli Manning's play.
Starting point is 01:12:47 And let's be clear, his offensive line played poor. But when you're a quarterback and you go into a season or you go into a game, understanding that we're going to have some problems that are presented to us up front, it is now my job to make sure I kind of pull out the eraser. I become the X factor. I'm the reason why don't worry about it, guys, I got you. He has to get rid of the ball. He has to get rid of the ball and be accurate when he does get rid of the ball
Starting point is 01:13:18 and not throw errant throws and throws that are 10 yards over a receiver wide open for touchdowns and at their feet. This is what Eli Manning has done. This is why it's hard for me to say Eli Manning is elite of the elite. Two Super Bowls are not. It's almost like they're outliers like. Yes. Playoff seasons.
Starting point is 01:13:40 Yeah. Because he doesn't show me this any other time. I haven't seen this on a consistent basis. The other thing is you jumped off the DAC bandwagon. I like his leadership. But yesterday was the first time I sat there and I watched him and I'm like, man. I mean, I like the leadership. I've never thought he's an A.
Starting point is 01:13:57 I always put him about 14th, 15th, but I watched him yesterday and I'm a fan of his. And I mean, I'm sorry, yards per play, not getting the ball downfield. Why did you jump? off him last year? I jumped off him because I felt like the offense was so elementary. And for him to be going into it to be a second year and knowing that there's going to be a lot of pressure on me, a lot of our offense success is going to be on my arm and my legs, and for him not to show up and perform the way that his teammates needed him, I knew coming
Starting point is 01:14:36 into this year, the same amount of pressure that he had on him last year is now being mounted because you take away your center, you take away Jason Whitton, you take away Des Bryant, all these other attention grabers that would take off some of the attention because you had excuses built in. Des Bryant can't create separation. He's limiting the success of our young quarterback. He can't grow with Des Bryant. All these excuses that we all threw out there for him, now they're gone.
Starting point is 01:15:08 Now it's on you to show up. You still have Ezekiel Elliott, a healthy Ezekiel Elliott, an Ezekiel Elliott that hasn't been looming with any issues. So going in, the pressure is now on you. The eyes are all on you. And you show up like this? I just don't see it. I get it. His leadership skills in the locker room, poise, all of that is great.
Starting point is 01:15:32 but if you can't show me that on the field with your play, you can keep all the rest of the things. I'll take, like I said last week, on Speak for Yourself, I'll take Cam Newton and his roller coaster of emotions because I know on Sundays he's going to play ball. And I'm going to look at him. He's going to look at me. And I knowingly am going to say he's going to get it done.
Starting point is 01:15:55 I can't say that with Dak Prescott. No, that's fair. When you watched yesterday for all of Cam's issues, He made two or three massive plays, and he's got that cannon for an arm. Greg Jennings, he'll be on first things first all week. Good seeing you, bud. Absolutely. Appreciate it.
Starting point is 01:16:10 You bet. For the record, I saw something this weekend, and I am shocked that nobody is talking about it, and it's one of the reasons I love Sam Darnold, who plays tonight. Nobody is talking about this. It is a huge deal, and it's crickets, and didn't anybody else see it? didn't you see it? It happened this weekend. It was there and nobody's talking about it.
Starting point is 01:16:35 And it's a thing next, the herd. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific. For sets a little different now, thanks to all the people who build sets. They had a great job for us. So something happened this weekend. It's amazing. So Arizona couldn't score for 55 minutes. And they wouldn't play their rookie quarterback.
Starting point is 01:16:57 And Buffalo's quarterback had a zero. zero-zero rating, and they were down 40-0. They eventually did, but didn't want to play their rookie quarterback. And Cleveland, Tyrod Taylor, went 15 for 40, and they didn't play their rookie quarterback. The Jets, who actually had a good quarterback, Teddy Bridgewater, so good that Sean Peyton said, that's the next Drew Brees. We'll trade for him. And the Jets said, we'll ship him out of town.
Starting point is 01:17:25 We're going to play on a Monday Night Football game in a dome, which, by the way, if you were a rookie quarterback, what would be the toughest opening game? I don't know. Monday night football on the road in a dome. I'm not sure if anybody keeps these records, but I'm going to go with a rookie quarterback starting on Monday night football on the road in a dome has never won. And I think the Jets have a chance to win last night. Probably don't. Touchdown dogs. I'll take them with the points, but they should be underdogs for a reason. First round of the Baker Mayfield, Sam Darnold stuff, Jets won. Jets got the right guy. the Jets had a legitimate quarterback who they could get a top draft pick for and they shipped them out of town who had looked really good Teddy Bridgewater in the preseason and they're like no
Starting point is 01:18:10 literally Tyrod Taylor Sam Bradford Nathan Peterman bad bad bad we're not willing to play our rookie quarterbacks Jets have already won from that perspective and did anybody else notice it this weekend here's something that nobody's talking about Baker Mayfield plays at Oklahoma he leaves they're 2 and 0 1100 yards of offense, blown out two teams, haven't skipped a beat. Oklahoma's got a five, nine and a half quarterback who's going to be playing baseball in four months, haven't missed a beat. USC without Sam Darnold couldn't score a touchdown against a Pac-12 defense. Did you watch USC over the weekend? Okay, their quarterback's not going to be a baseball player.
Starting point is 01:18:54 He's a football player. He was the number one like quarterback in the country with almost four and five-star USC players. veteran offensive line, all their receivers, all their tight ends, running backs, all this task. Couldn't get near the red zone without Sam Darnold. Couldn't get near the red zone. The last time USC didn't score a touchdown, oh wait. It was one of the last games before Sam Darnold started. And then he started and they scored a bunch of touchdowns.
Starting point is 01:19:23 And then he left in the second game, first pack 12 game, couldn't score a touchdown. Baker Mayfield lives Oklahoma. no impact. 50 a game, 2 and 0, 1,100 yards. I'm telling you folks. Now, who knows what happens over the next 12 years, but I've said this for a long time. If you want to know somebody's impact, it's not just what they do when they arrive. It's what happens to the place that they leave. USC can't score touchdowns now. They can't put together eight plus. play drives without Darnold.
Starting point is 01:20:01 Oklahoma, 2 and 0, 1100 yards without Baker. And they got a baseball player, a tiny baseball players are a quarterback. He's leaving the program in four months to go play baseball. The second thing is, I said this last year, certain teams have a lot
Starting point is 01:20:18 of A players, L.A. Rams. But they've also got some C players. And there are teams in this league. Philadelphia has got some A's and got a few Cs. There is no team in the league. I'm not sure how many A players they have. Harrison Smith, their safety's an A player.
Starting point is 01:20:39 The Minnesota Vikings is the most complete roster in the NFL. Now, the Rams have more sex appeal and star appeal and Indomac and Sue and Aaron Donald. That's going to be fun to watch. They play the Raiders tonight. But you're watching the Minnesota Vikings. Now, I said this year I expect him to come back a little. But I do believe, week 6th, week 17, they'll be in the playoff race.
Starting point is 01:20:59 I have them at 9 and 7. They're going to be somewhere in the playoff race. I'll take Green Bay to win the division, hope so after last night. Green Bay tends to do with Aaron Rogers, start a little slower. They tend to be better later in the season. That's sort of Green Bay. But when you watch the Vikings against Jimmy Garoppolo, and by the way, the Vikings should win at home against Jimmy Garoppolo.
Starting point is 01:21:17 The 49ers are rebuilding their offensive line. They're rebuilding their secondary. They don't have really a go-to running back. Of course, Minnesota won the game. and Jimmy Garoppolo was under unbelievable duress, as he should be. It's a battle line against the great defense. But I'm not sure when I watched the NFL yesterday. I saw a lot of things, and I watched every game.
Starting point is 01:21:35 I turned the Baltimore game off pretty quick. But outside of that, I even watched that Titans Dolphins game that seemingly lasted 13 hours, rain delays, lightning delays. Longest game in NFL history. It was just never ended. It was just bad. But when you look at the Vikings, it's hard to mess that lineup up. Kirk Cousins, and the reason I said they'd come back a little bit is because new quarterback, new system, divisions better, Trubisky's second year,
Starting point is 01:22:01 you know, Aaron Rogers back, NFC loaded, first place schedule. I'm like, and they're going to get some got last year of their defense never got hurt. But man, it's hard to screw up Minnesota. That roster is either B, B plus or A minus players across the board. No flaws whatsoever. And when they're playing at home, watch out. Next week, they face the Packers. And if the Packers fall behind 20-0, they're not coming back on that defense.

This is the herd. Hour number three, live in Los Angeles, IHeart Radio, Fox Sports Radio, and FS-1. great Monday night football tonight. I get the Rams against John Gruden, and I get Sam Darnold
Starting point is 01:22:56 debuting on Monday night football on the road in a dome against Detroit. I can't remember last time. You know, I watched so much football. I watch college. I watch pro. I watch Sunday night. I watch Thursday.
Starting point is 01:23:07 So sometimes on Monday, it depends on the game. I've skipped Monday night football on certain nights. Like if it's just a bad, you know, if I'm getting Jags Tennessee, I won't watch it. This is a really good Monday night for NFL football. And I know it's on a night. another network, but this is a really good night for Monday night football, a very good night. And you've got a lot invested in column was right, column was wrong, because you got Sam
Starting point is 01:23:27 Darnold and you got the potential Gruden dumpster fire. By the way, I just found out Joy Taylor's birthday is the same day as my wife. And my wife and I do not get along. So I hope this works out. It all makes sense. You got you Capricorns are very feisty. I think I'm so, I don't want to say rational, but I think I'm very calm. Are we feisty?
Starting point is 01:23:47 For the record, I'm a Capricorn, too. Oh, you are? When's your purchase? January 6. Oh, okay. So we're all feisty. We're all a little feisty. All right. All right.
Starting point is 01:23:54 Coming up in 15 minutes, Tony Gonzalez, what he saw, former chief, I want his opinion on Patrick Mahomes, because that was stellar. What a performance by him. So 14-time Pro Bowler Tony Gonzalez, best for last. A stat John Gruden coaching tonight does not want to hear. But Packer fans were undoubtedly happy when they woke up today. But I don't know if they should be. so I'm starting there. Packer fans think they won last night.
Starting point is 01:24:23 No, you didn't. You escaped last night. You escaped. You were about two inches on that sack to Aaron Rogers from him not playing the rest of the year. Do you see the pressure on his leg? Did you see him gimp around that field? Did you see him on a cart leaving Lambo into the tunnel?
Starting point is 01:24:42 That's not winning. That's escaping. He just came off a collarbone surgery. Green Bay owes him. Aaron Rogers, Khalil Mack. There's 7-0 in the playoffs with Aaron Rogers when the Green Bay defense is just competent. The average NFL team scores 21 and a half points a game.
Starting point is 01:25:01 When the Packers hold teams in the playoffs to 22 or less, Aaron Rogers has never lost. But you know why Aaron Rogers hasn't been to eight Super Bowls like Tom Brady? It's not Aaron Rogers. It's because this team gives up 50, 41, 38, 29, 36, 34. Don't tell me you one last night. I saw Aaron Rogers. I saw those fans.
Starting point is 01:25:21 I saw what you were doing. I watched Twitter. You were freaking out. And by the way, Khalil Mack was on a snap count. He's not even in shape. You only played against the half of Khalil Mack that they scheduled for him to play.
Starting point is 01:25:37 Good luck in Soldier Field the next five years when he's not in a snap count. Good luck the next four times you face him at Lambo in five years. When he's not in a snap count. count. By the way, the Packers have a really good right tackle. Brian Belaga. What happens when you don't have a tackle that good? Because he was totally overwhelmed. Green Bay. Don't tell me you can't afford two great players. Minnesota's paying more than just Kirk Cousins. Rams are paying seven different guys. New England's paying Gronk and Tom Brady. You could have had the best
Starting point is 01:26:09 offensive player in your division, Aaron Rogers, and the best defensive player in your division, Khalil Mack. And you went Packers. You went cheap. Well, you know, it's a very expensive, yep. By the way, companies do this all the time. They overpay for something to keep it away from a rival. I've worked at a lot of business companies, a lot of media companies. They'll overpay for people, rights, leagues, games to keep it away from rivals. If I'm Green Bay and I know A, the Bears want him, and I got to play them twice a year, and, oh, B, free agents don't really like Green Bay. Cali'll Mac would never choose us and see we're the only team in the NFL with two first round picks. I am getting Khalil Mack to keep him away from my rival and to keep him off Aaron Rogers. And if I'm the Bears and I got Mitch Trebisky's my quarterback and I got to go against Aaron Rogers, yeah, I'm going to overpay for Khalil Mack. I will support the Bears forever on that.
Starting point is 01:27:09 That bear's defense has to be great because, you know, I mean, Mitch Trubisky is running a college offense. I mean, did you look at Aaron Rogers on the sideline? Two and a half minutes left. They were giving the ball to Chicago. He was, oh, they're laughing. He's like, we got this thing. I mean, we got this thing. Trubisky against our secondary, our pass rush.
Starting point is 01:27:25 I'm not going to score touchdown. So, you know, it's, I mean, did you see what defensive linemen did? Did you see what pass rushers did in the NFL yesterday? Anybody watched Denver, Seattle, Vaughn Miller? Three sacks, four hits, two force fumbles. Do you watch Miles Garrett, two force fumbles, two sacks, three tackles for loss. Mac, I don't know, had the greatest half, I'm not joking, in the history of the NFL by a defensive player. In fact, it was the best stat line by any defensive player in the NFL since.
Starting point is 01:27:55 Kalee Mack did it for Oakland. You got Lawrence Taylor or the closest thing. What about J.J. Watt? J.J. Watt's never healthy. Kalee Mack never misses games. Green Bay, you didn't win last night. Don't tell me you won last night. You escaped last night.
Starting point is 01:28:13 Let me shift to the Dallas Cowboys. Who, was that a stinker? It's not like Carolina looked much better. Let me talk about the Dallas Cowboys. So they lost yesterday, but it's not just losing. It's how they lose. And, you know, I was thinking about this. And as you age as a guy, I can only speak for guys here, I see the world differently.
Starting point is 01:28:36 And let's talk about Jerry Jones. Jerry Jones is 20 and 30 and he's an oil maverick and he's doing day. oh, and it makes a bunch of money. And then all of a sudden, he gets to a point where I want to buy the Dallas Cowboys. And now he's got, you know, the richest franchise in American sports. And I'm thinking Jerry Jones is 75 years old. And he's watching that thing. And he's in a different stage now.
Starting point is 01:29:00 Jerry Jones in recent years has made very non-Jerry Jones moves. He used to hate Vegas. He voted against Vegas. Vegas is not good for the NFL. Suddenly flipped. He was the owner that got Vegas a foot. ball team. Jerry Jones was pro player. It didn't matter how bad the player. It didn't matter what a headache. Didn't matter what. Jerry Jones was pro player. And then about six months ago,
Starting point is 01:29:24 he flipped. Des Bryant. We don't have any receivers. He's our best. Let's get rid of him. As Jerry Jones is aging, he is showing you a different Jerry Jones. He's running out of time and Jerry knows it.
Starting point is 01:29:55 He's not only on the back nine, he may be on the back two or three. And yesterday is he sitting there watching Jason Garrett and he also watches Belichick and Andy Reid and Doug Peterson and Sean Payton? Does he think Jason Garrett's in that class? He doesn't. And he's watching Desh yesterday. and he's watching Breeze yesterday, and he watching Brady, and he's watching all these great quarterbacks. And does he think, does he think,
Starting point is 01:30:20 Dak Prescott's that? No, he doesn't. He's got eyes. He may be old. He's not blind. Yesterday, the Cowboys didn't just lose, but they looked boring and safe and limited and pedestrian. And it looked like they had a really, really low ceiling.
Starting point is 01:30:36 Jerry doesn't like ceilings. If Dallas were lost 38, 37, it's different. in a wild, dynamic, creative, fireworks show. Dallas yesterday didn't just lose. That ceiling looked low. Jason Garrett, limited. Not terrible. Limited offense.
Starting point is 01:31:00 Not creative. DAC. Good enough, but 22 wins last two years. But I just wonder, when Jerry Jones sits up in that box, This is a new Jerry. He flipped on Vegas. Pro player flipped on Dez. Is that?
Starting point is 01:31:22 That something you want long term? Jason Garrett? Dak Prescott? Now, Dak's, DAC only making $750,000 a year, nobody is outperforming their contract like Dak Prescott. But Jerry knows if he signs DAC to a franchise deal, that may be Jerry's last big franchise quarterback.
Starting point is 01:31:50 I don't know. The world changes as you age. You see things differently. He can't like what he saw yesterday. Coming up next, last week I said, we're paying attention to all these rookie quarterback, Sam Darnold plays tonight. But the best rookie quarterback,
Starting point is 01:32:09 because he really didn't play much last year, Patrick Mahomes, and he was sensational. I mean, there's no way you could watch the Chiefs yesterday and not just go, oh, they found their franchise guy for 15 years. Blue me away. Tony Gonzalez, the Chief for a long time. A little backstory on that coming up next. Plus best for last.
Starting point is 01:32:36 Be sure to catch live editions of the herd. Weekdays at noon Eastern 9 a.m. On Fox Sports Radio, FS1, and the IHeart Radio app. By the way, after our show today, live, first time ever, speak for yourself. Marcellus Wiley's joining us. So that right after our show ends, boom, right there. Let's go right into it. We got a new set today over here.
Starting point is 01:32:57 It's a beautiful new set. And I'll waste your time. You don't care about the architecture here, but you see we change it and stuff. And we got a lot of people close to each other and stuff. It's like a nice little studio and stuff. It's good to acknowledge it because people don't like change. People don't like change, especially as Capricorns. We don't like change.
Starting point is 01:33:13 Just be very consistent with us. I'm no longer towering over the world. Tony Gonzalez is 14-time Pro Bowler. Second-most receptions in NFL history behind Jerry Rice. God, that's a lot of catches. I don't know where to sit. I said, nice. It's kind of like a hip lounge.
Starting point is 01:33:31 This is, yeah, we're the cocktails, huh? No kidding. That's a great point. Usually last hour. So I got to start with the team. team that you know very well. It's Atlanta and Kansas City. Let's go to Kansas City, Patrick Mahomes. Listen, Andy Reid,
Starting point is 01:33:46 we both know as a play designer. He's a play scriptor. That Andy Reid's thing is he's taking quarterbacks, made him better. He trades up for Patrick Mahomes and sits him for a year behind a really good, solid quarterback, smart dude, Alex Smith. And then he says, Alex, love you, by Patrick in. I'll tell you something. He looks so
Starting point is 01:34:05 poised. He looks so good yesterday. He looked great. He looked. He looked. What did you see with Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City? I think they put the NFL on notice. I mean, they've been talking about the hype and we're going to have the best offense. I think Tyree Kiel was saying we're going to have the best offense in the league, maybe even ever or whatever. They got a lot of weapons.
Starting point is 01:34:25 They went to L.A. and beat the people's favorites who were saying they were going to win the division. Chargers have legitimately two legitimate pass rushers. Almost nobody in the league does except Denver. Yes. Yep. And they went there and literally made them look like like second level type competition. And I just, I look at them right now.
Starting point is 01:34:45 And Tyreek Hill, he is a special, special player right now. I mean, looking at him, I hope you guys have him on his fantasy, on your fantasy teams because he is a special player. Last year, Michael Vic interned for the chiefs during the summer for the coaching or whatever. And he came back and gave his top five receivers in the league. He put Tyree Kill on there. And all of us were looking at him like, are you crazy? This last year. Now look at him.
Starting point is 01:35:08 He's right up there at Antonio Brown, A.J. Green, Julio Jones, all those guys. Dion Sanders was so fast, he made fast guys look slow. Yeah. Like Tyreek Hill yesterday was running away from fast guys. And I'm seriously, you get Deshawn Jackson when he first came into the league. Michael Vic once told me about Deshawn Jackson. Michael was standing on the sideline and Deshawn Jackson ran past him. He said he looked like a deer in the forest.
Starting point is 01:35:34 Yeah, because he ever seen a deer in the forest, they hop. And he goes, and I watched Tyreek yesterday. I'm like, the Chargers aren't slow. Chargers got speed, and Tyreek Hill was amazing. So let me ask about this. So everybody, yesterday you said on the show, you said, listen, John Gruden, you defended John Gruden. I did. You said, I understand what he's doing with Cleo Mac.
Starting point is 01:35:56 So this morning, you're probably getting, I don't even know if you're on Twitter, you're probably getting a lot of hate up, got lit up. Because everybody's saying, Tony Gonzalez, you don't know anything. Look, Clow Mac's amazing. Is that what we're saying? Yes, that's what we're saying. He set a record. It hasn't been done since 1982.
Starting point is 01:36:10 Gruden looks like a fool, and so do you. Maybe I am a fool. But not about this, okay? I think, still, if you look back what the New England Patriots have done, because I do believe Gruden has watched the best team in all sports franchises. Forget about the sport. That's what he's been doing for 15 years. He's been watching and learning and critiquing and saying that this is how you do it.
Starting point is 01:36:32 You cannot use maxed out players. First of all, Galil Mac and the Bears, they still lost. the game. Let's just do not forget that. And then look at last year. I can't remember his name. From the New England, I do remember it, from the Patriots, and they let him go. He led the league in Sacks last year in Arizona. Oh, Chandler Jones.
Starting point is 01:36:47 Chandler Jones. Led the league in sacks. Patriots went to the Super Bowl. Okay. Does Belichick look like a fool now? Okay. That's a good point. So you're saying, you know, he's sitting there watching Belichick give up these players and because they got the quarterback right. Yep. They got
Starting point is 01:37:03 got Derek Carr. I think he grew believes that Derek Carr is a superstar quarterback. I think he is too. They paid him like that. He's certainly on his way to be in. I like them too. I think they're going to start building the pieces. So I'm still, stand by what I say.
Starting point is 01:37:16 I still think Gruden did what he thought was best for that organization. And he's playing the long game. You've got to be patient. Okay, but if I'm Chicago, let me defend the bears, though. If I'm in a division and I have Mitch Trubisky and you have Aaron Rogers, how do I at least bring Aaron Rogers down? Yeah. Because Mitch Trubisky's ceiling is limited.
Starting point is 01:37:34 So if I'm the Bears and I'm Matt Nagy and I'm the owners and I like Trebisky, I put money into him. But he's not Aaron Rogers and he's not Cam Newton. Not yet. Okay. But I'm saying if I'm going to defend Chicago on this. If I play in a division with Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Big Ben, Drew Breeze, I'm going to overpay for past rushers. Yeah. Especially if my quarterback looks to be okay.
Starting point is 01:37:58 Yeah. So I'm going to defend the Bears on this. Listen, they're in bed now with Trubisky for what, four years? Yeah. you want to go 0 and 8 against the Packers or 4 and 4. The way to go 4 and 4 is Aaron Rogers gets hurt. Aaron Rogers gets its soldier field knocked down. I think they did the right thing too.
Starting point is 01:38:14 I'm not saying they did the wrong thing. See, so what you're saying is you're defending Oakland's approach, but let's not kill Chicago because they've got to face Aaron Rogers 10 times the next five years. They got to face them and you see what happened yesterday. You can have a legendary performance, legendary performance in Kalil Mack. And guess what? still arguably the best quarterback in NFL history does his thing and he goes out there and wins the game. So you've never been a guy that jumped on, and we all have, I think most of us in this business agree who the top five or six quarterbacks are.
Starting point is 01:38:48 And we know who's at the bottom. We don't need to mention any names. And then we can argue about the difference is Matt Stafford this, this, this, this. I've never thought Dax an A. I don't think Dax ever going to be an A. But you were always really hesitant on Dack Prescott. You didn't buy into all the stuff. And why? Like I watched him yesterday and I'm like, man, all the haters, it looked good today. And I know it's week one and Carolina's defense is good.
Starting point is 01:39:17 I know that too. That's a real defense. But why didn't you buy in a Dack? You won yesterday because he didn't look good. I think he's never had to look good. I mean, he's had that offensive line. And everybody's like, do you think he's capable of doing this? I'm like, well, he's never shown that he can do it before.
Starting point is 01:39:32 He played well with really good players, surrounded by good players. Now you don't have that, which is what happens in the NFL. I don't like it when guys come out the gate and they're hot and people are like, oh, they're going to be one of the best players ever. It's like, well, let's see when the adversity comes, which will come, which will come in life and in football for sure. It's going to happen. And they're going through that right now.
Starting point is 01:39:51 They are the face of that franchise, him and Zeke. It's on them to go out there and be successful. They don't have a tight end now. They don't have the tight end. They don't have that. big play receiver. He was late on throws. He was off on throws. Guys were having trouble getting open. We're going to see what he's made of this year. We're going to see that true play. And it's going to remember,
Starting point is 01:40:08 it's only his third year. I'm not getting off the train. I still like him. First of all, as a person, I think he's great. He's a great leader in that locker room. And he's got skill. And he's going to be a pretty good quarterback. But this is really going to shape who he is, how he handles this adversity this year, because I don't see it getting any better anytime soon. What do you make of Pittsburgh? So it's crazy. So I was saying this earlier, you do some acting stuff. And you were a great player.
Starting point is 01:40:33 You do a great job for us. And you do some acting. You're up for some roles. And I said, in Hollywood, you see these people that are so gifted they can overcome their personal foibles. And I used Robert Downey. He had real troubles early in his career. He had been arrested. He had some behavioral, some drug stuff.
Starting point is 01:40:48 But he was so damn good. He kept getting roles. And then when he got his life together, then he rises. Boom. And I said, you know, it reminds me the Steelers is that there. They're so gifted, you can't take your eyes off him, and they're able to still win a bunch of games. But if they don't get it buttoned up, this is why they can't beat New England. Tony, they're a mess.
Starting point is 01:41:09 Six turnovers, 12 penalties, but then they get seven sacks, six yards of play. I just watch them. And I'm like, the more things change, the more they stay the same. Pittsburgh, to me, if you want to win in the playoffs, Tony, you're facing the best coaches, you're facing the best pass rushes, you're facing the best quarterbacks. they can beat Cleveland, Cincinnati all day. Something's up with Pittsburgh. They're just too much drama.
Starting point is 01:41:33 They were a mess yesterday. Yeah. Why? Are we giving Ben a pass? I don't think you can give anybody pass. And I'm a firm believer. It starts at the top. The teams that I've been on where we had pretty good talent,
Starting point is 01:41:45 but we weren't able to get over that hump. We weren't able to be successful. It starts with the coaching staff. And I think a guy like Tom would probably say, yeah, it starts with me. It's my fault. because you see the way things like, things are always leaking out of the locker room there.
Starting point is 01:42:00 And, you know, are we going to, it is. It's the reality. It's the real housewives or the real NFL players of the NFL. It's full of drama all the time. And it's hard to win like that. They're going to be, it's going to be fun to watch. Were you ever in a dramatic locker room? Yes.
Starting point is 01:42:18 Where? In Kansas City. In Kansas City. Why? Why was it? Just, you know, without naming names, I mean, you get emotional, really emotional coaches have emotional teams. You are a reflection of what your head coach is.
Starting point is 01:42:32 Yes. Always. I believe that. Well, Herm Edwards, you had a Herm. At Herm. Herm's very emotional. Yeah, we had emotional. He liked emotional players.
Starting point is 01:42:39 He liked emotional players. And emotional things happen. People get sensitive, man. The NFL. It's a tough place. So you're saying the Herm locker room could be a little emotional. Yeah, it could be emotional. Dick Vermil's locker room was emotional.
Starting point is 01:42:53 He cried a lot. He cried a lot and on his stuff. I've seen team fights. Just people encourage us. It doesn't happen in Belichick. You're not allowed to do that. You fight. You're kicked out of practice.
Starting point is 01:43:05 You don't even come back. You do it again. Don't ever come back. You know, it's funny about you. One of the things, you know, I have a perception of Tony Gonzalez, and then I meet you. And you're actually strict parent, home early, don't mess around, get up, do your push-ups. I look at you, and I think, actor, good-looking guy. of Famer, but then when I meet you, you hated the drama.
Starting point is 01:43:28 No. Like you're the least dramatic guy. It's really funny. My perception of you is different. So when you tell me these stories off the air, you're like, oh, there's too much drama. It was too much. You wouldn't fit in Pittsburgh.
Starting point is 01:43:40 Pittsburgh would wear you out. I wouldn't like it. I don't like, I want to show up. I think, and not that obviously I played in it and you deal with it and you do what you do what you got to do to go out there and be successful. But I always think about, I would have enjoyed the, People talk about Bill Belichick's locker room. I think I would have enjoyed that.
Starting point is 01:43:57 It's like, let's show up, let's play some ball, let's win some games, and then let's have fun and doing what we've got to do. But then let's go home. Let's leave the drama. Let's check the Eagles at the door. And everybody's ego, my ego too. It still went up and down at times, but let's check it for the betterment of the team and have some fun.
Starting point is 01:44:14 I'm not that strict of a parent. I'm not. My daughter's mad at me right now. You're right. No, you are. You say stuff. And you're, you just are very, people would look at Tony Gonzalez. and see, oh, the fireworks, you know, you go to these great vacations,
Starting point is 01:44:27 and I'm like, dad, home, bed, early. Now, I'm not trying to say you're boring, but you're not, you're kind of like a dad. Yeah, I'm a dad. I'm a dad, but sometimes you got to let your hair. You're like a high school principal who had really good hands and could bench press like 400 pounds. You're like the principal of your family.
Starting point is 01:44:46 But you were really talented and could run and catch and stuff. But you're like, you're like a dad that comes home and. I am, you know what, maybe I am, you're right, I'm strict. Nothing wrong with being strict. Nothing wrong. Standards. Hey, you and I have standards. Absolutely. A lot of people displaced no standards.
Starting point is 01:45:04 No standards. You and I have standards. I can tell it with the new set. You've got standards around here. By the way, Joy, you're a Steeler fan from Pittsburgh. When we sit here and talk about Pittsburgh, in the city of Pittsburgh, do you still have family there? Yeah, yeah. Okay.
Starting point is 01:45:19 What's their takeaway? Do they like Ben? Do they like Tomlin? Like, what are people in Pittsburgh say? The thing about the Steelers is, despite all their dysfunction, they're one of the most consistent franchises in the NFL. They win 10 every year. And they do not change coaches.
Starting point is 01:45:34 Never. Ever. They have a very strong ownership, legendary ownership, and they still have more championships than more Super Bowls than any other team in NFL history. So I think it's just starting to get to the point where it's more expectations than it is necessarily what's been going on in Pittsburgh. It's getting to the point where it's like, okay, you guys are consistently good, but now it's time for another Super Bowl.
Starting point is 01:45:57 You have Ben Rathesburger, you have Levy on Belial, you have Antonio Brown. You have the pieces that you need. You have a consistent coach, consistent ownership. You have the pieces you need to win a championship. So your standards are really high, but there's a sense in Pittsburgh, you know, we're now wasting years. Right. Like in Cleveland, you're really what it is. Yeah, it feels like in Pittsburgh, it's like, okay, we're not unhappy with everybody.
Starting point is 01:46:17 Yeah. We've wasted about five years here. Yeah, I've told you this before. The expectation of the Steelers is to win a Super Bowl. In another city, this might be acceptable because it's like, hey, we're good, we're competitive, we're relevant. But in Pittsburgh, you need to be winning Super Bowl. And one thing, too, there is the gold standard, which is doing a Patriots. Right.
Starting point is 01:46:36 And you can be good, and you can win championships, and you can be consistent and get your 10 wins. But if you want to take it from good to great, that is where I believe the thing that's stopping them is the drama. I totally agree. If they eliminated the drama, they'd probably win some more championships. No, I agree. They're just not quite buttoned up, and that's it. Tony Gonzalez, good stuff. Joy with the news.
Starting point is 01:46:58 No, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. Speaking of the Steelers, not being buttoned up, Levy on Bell forfeited his $855,000 game check to hold out yesterday as he watched James Connor have a pretty impressive game against the Browns with two touchdowns. And he tweeted after the game ended in a tie, the face with the monocle emoji.
Starting point is 01:47:20 Yeah, I thought that was funny. And then he followed up that tweet with a response to someone asking if he was throwing shade. And he replied, no shade. Just never witnessed a tie before. Which is a clever way of living like, yeah, like, maybe people don't think I'm kind of throwing shade. I thought that was funny. It is funny. And look, Leveon has every right to say what he wants about the situation.
Starting point is 01:47:41 Like, he's sacrificing, too. He just sacrificed the $800,000 game check. So it's not like he's not. there's no losing I actually, he was on the show last year I would love to have him on the show again. He's a great guest. And I like him a lot.
Starting point is 01:47:56 I'm a huge Lavian Bell fan. My knock is, we had 20 running backs drafted this year. We're finding these guys like Kareem Hunt and Alvin Kamara is that when you choose to be a running back, the downside is teams don't want to give you five-year deals. They just don't. They just, people like Todd Gurley in that Rams offense because Goff is such a kid.
Starting point is 01:48:17 I mean, Ben's a Hall of Famer. Once you get a Hall of Fame quarterback, most staffs don't want to pay a running back of fortune. If you have a young quarterback, like Goff, okay. Because you need that running back. You need the running back. But, you know, I like, or Ezekiel Elliott with Dak, you may have to pay Ezekiel Elliott.
Starting point is 01:48:34 But if you have a quarterback as good as Big Ben, GMs don't want to pay a running back because you've got to keep some money for defense. The Steelers seem to have a reason for why they refuse. to pay Levion, but I don't blame Levion for holding out and doing whatever he needs to do for himself. That's right. And if he wants to hold out until week 10,
Starting point is 01:48:53 as much as that's going to hurt my fantasy team, I understand because he's got to keep his body in check. Watching some of the running backs, watching like Christian McCaffrey yesterday, you forget how much wear and tear they have put on their bodies. It's a car wreck every play. Christian McCaffrey
Starting point is 01:49:12 just, to me, I was sitting there yesterday. I think he had like 17 touches or something. Christian McCaffrey should get about 12 to 15 touches. You can't lean on him. You need two of him. But I was watching him yesterday, and I'm like, that's not going to last 16 weeks. You can't give him 17 to 20 touches.
Starting point is 01:49:30 No way. I mean, I certainly hope he does, but it was just remarkable to watch. Speaking of running backs, one running back that did show out yesterday is Adrian Peterson. He didn't waste any time showing his new team. He still has something left in the tank. He scored his 100th career rushing touchdown to become the seventh player in NFL history to register 12,000 plus rushing yards and over 100 rushing touchdowns. Here are some of the other players who have done that.
Starting point is 01:49:52 Emmett Smith, Walter Payton, Lillian Tomlinson, Jim Brown, Marshall Falk, Marcus Allen, and now Adrian Peterson. Is it me or is Washington really good when they come west? They beat the Rams last year in L.A., the Seahawks in Seattle. They dominate Arizona. They may want to move the franchise. Because every time I watch Washington play out west, I'm like, God, they're great. Then they go back to the east and lose. Yeah, well, it's good for AP, though.
Starting point is 01:50:17 He's been saying that he still has this in the tank, and then he went out there and showed it. So just keep being consistent, and everyone will be apologizing for doubting you. Finally, we were looking forward to Deshaun Watson's return, and his offensive line did not do him any favors yesterday. He dropped back 42 times and faced pressure on 23 of those dropbacks in the sack three times. But despite that, Watson requested the blame be put on his shoulders.
Starting point is 01:50:40 I think it was terrible on my part. So you can just, I just feel like that. like you can put the hell on me because I'd be way much better than doing what I showed today. My energy was low and just overthinking a little thing. I'm the leader of the team, leader of this offense. So as I go, the offense go. And it was just, you know, it was just kind of not enough energy, not enough pace on our part. Yeah, I didn't think he was terrible.
Starting point is 01:51:07 I thought Tom Brady put on a clinic and kept him on the bench watching. And he's only 10 months from an ACL surgery. And I don't believe the Texans have ever won in. No, no. Foxborough. And, I mean, he had 17 to 34 for 176 yards in touchdown, and he had an interception also. And like you said, he's coming off of an injury. So it's not like a performance that is disappointing by, I think, anyone's standards.
Starting point is 01:51:29 For the record. Except for him, obviously. Belichick's record against young quarterbacks is unbelievable. I mean, he just, he just, Sam Darnold is going to have to play Belichick twice this year. Let me make a guarantee. Sam Darnold's going to struggle against Bill Belich. I thought you were going to say he's going to lose. I think Sam Darnold this year, and this is what Belichick does.
Starting point is 01:51:53 First of all, you don't want to say it. No, I mean, I love Sam Darnal, but Belichick eats young quarterbacks alive. He's got the experience. I mean, this is what Belichick does. He takes whatever you are weakest at and completely exploits it. And they disguise coverages. He just Belichick makes. So I look at, Deshaun and I was like, he's not terrible.
Starting point is 01:52:17 but this is what Belichick does. I mean, the kid's got seven NFL starts. Bill's going to throw stuff at it. And by the way, New England got a pass rush yesterday. They got a real pass rush. He's going to have higher expectations of himself than that. Obviously, they lost the game. He wants to win the game.
Starting point is 01:52:32 That's the competitor in Deshaun Watson, but I didn't think it was a bad performance by him. No, I didn't either. Joy of the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The herd-line news. Coming up, I'll give you the one stat that John Gruden
Starting point is 01:52:47 And he's coaching tonight against the star-studded L.A. Rams doesn't want you to hear. That is best for last. And it's coming up next. Plus, live speak for yourself. The second our show ends. That's coming up. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific. When Cousin Sal, Todd Furman, Clay Travis, and Rachel Benetta get together, all bets are on.
Starting point is 01:53:13 Lock it in is the new, all-new, one-of-a-kind sports gambling show weekdays. at 4.30 p.m. Eastern on FS1 and the Fox Sports app. Rachel Bonetta, Clay Travis, Todd Furman, who I went to dinner with 10 years ago. He ran Caesar's Palace, Oddsmaker, and Cousin Sal, who's been on Jimmy Kimmel for 15 years. Very funny guy. So lock it in. It's coming up in a little over 90 minutes. Coming up immediately after our show. Speak for yourself.
Starting point is 01:53:41 Marcella Swiley is here at the network now, fired up for that. Car shopping's confusing. A lot of terms, dealer price, list price. here's what's not saved three grand off MSRP. So, you know, the way it works in our world today, media, nothing has context. If I am critical of somebody, you're a hater. No, I can be critical of Aaron Rogers and think he's a Hall of Famer.
Starting point is 01:54:00 If I say I like a guy and he fails, you loved him! No, I like Dak Prescott. I don't love him. And with that, we start with Best for Last. After almost three hours, Colin apparently hasn't gotten to the point yet. Quit holding out on us, cowherd. It's the best for last. Tonight the Raiders host the Rams.
Starting point is 01:54:21 It's in Oakland. Lame Duck franchise, right? It's a very good Monday night football game. And John Gruden, and this happens a lot. I don't have anything against John. I work with him. I like him. I think he's a great broadcaster.
Starting point is 01:54:33 And I thought he was a fine coach. But there are times that brands overcome your actual accomplishments. And let's go music. The Eagles are in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Kiss. is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The difference is the Eagles have the greatest selling album in the history of rock and roll. They have songs like Hotel California,
Starting point is 01:54:56 which guys like me still listen to regularly, if not on some sort of radio device on YouTube. Kess is known more for mascara than music and has never had a number one album. The Eagles have had six and has really one or two top hits. I want to rock all night was awesome. I admit it. But Kiss's brand is much bigger than their actual accomplishments.
Starting point is 01:55:21 We see this in Hollywood all the time. Meryl Streep. Merrill Streep to me is the greatest actor of my life. Actor, actress, all the same. Three Oscars, 21 nominations, Kramer versus Kramer, and all time. First great movie I ever saw. Sophie's Choice, Dear Hunter, doesn't matter.
Starting point is 01:55:39 Greatest Actor of My Life. Hall of Famer, Oscar-winning actress. George Clooney is. also been nominated several times, and he won an Oscar for Siriana, and he's a fine actor. Essentially, he plays himself in every movie he's in. I know him as much for his dating as I do his acting. He was a really big star on ER. He's a fine actor. But I think at this point, his brand is bigger than his accomplishments. I don't hate either. I don't hate Kiss. Don't hate Clooney. But there are times when brand is here, an accomplishment are sort of here.
Starting point is 01:56:14 go to John Gruden. So these are Super Bowl winning coaches. Mike McCarthy. People in Green Bay are always complaining. Ah, I mean, Aaron Rodgers. He only has Mike McCarthy. Tom Brady's got, let's compare John Gruden and Mike McCarthy. Mike McCarthy also has a Super Bowl win.
Starting point is 01:56:34 Mike McCarthy has a significantly better winning percentage. And I would say the NFC right now is hard to win games. All-time rank in winning percentage. Mike McCarthy top 20. John Gruden, 69. but one has a huge TV personality and one has really no personality at all. By the way, the lowest winning percentage among coaches
Starting point is 01:56:53 who have won a Super Bowl, the lowest winning percentage. Mike McCarthy's not in it. John Gruden's got the fifth lowest winning percentage. So far in week one, the coaches with a new team, it should be noted. The coach, excuse me, the teams of the new coach are 0 and 5. And the Rams will beat the Redders tonight. So the teams with new coaches will be 0-6. Yeah, if Donald upsets the lions, you're right, it'll be 0-N-7.
Starting point is 01:57:27 It's not that I hate Gruden. Work with him, love him as a broadcaster, thought he was a fine coach. But there are times brand now has surpassed accomplishments. John Kalapari in college basketball, his brand now is bigger than his accomplishments. If he wins another one, they're even. But right now, Shishovsky's brand and accomplishment, are very even. So tonight, Jets, Lions, Rams, Raiders.
Starting point is 01:57:51 I've talked Rams Raiders. I'll take the Rams tonight. Lions at home against the rookie in a dome should probably win. I would bet the Jets tonight. One of the things I've touched on for years and years, and I believe this to be true, is that when somebody, Jim Harbaugh goes to Michigan or a coach, Calipari, goes to Kentucky,
Starting point is 01:58:09 when you get these big personalities, Chip Kelly goes, leaves Oregon, goes somewhere, don't just pay attention to the people where they go. What happens to the place they leave? Harbaugh left the 49ers. They crashed and burned. Chip Kelly left Oregon.
Starting point is 01:58:27 They're not the same program. This weekend, Baker Mayfield left Oklahoma. Has anybody watched Oklahoma since Baker Mayfield left? 2 and 0, 1,100 yards of offense. They've got a 5-9-and-a-half quarterback who's a baseball player who's leaving the program in four months, they have not skipped a beat. Anybody watch USC since Sam Darnold left? Struggled at home to beat UNLV and couldn't score a touchdown against Stanford.
Starting point is 01:58:59 The Jets got the right guy. The Browns got the wrong guy. Oklahoma has not missed a beat without Baker Mayfield. USC this weekend couldn't get in the red zone without Sam Donald. the two times USC in the history of the program struggles to score a touchdown. It was the game before Sam Darnold started, Alabama, and this weekend, the second game that Sam Darnold wasn't the starting quarterback. So when I watch the Jets tonight, and I listen, I know what's going to happen on Twitter, Joy, you know what's going to happen, is that Sam Darnold on the road, Monday Night Football Dome is going to scrap a little bit.
Starting point is 01:59:43 I guarantee he's going to have a turnover. For sure. I mean, yesterday, Andrew Luck had an interception, went 20 to 25, and my Twitter's like, well, I threw an interception. The guy was great. Stop trying to be right, get it right. Andrew Luck was great yesterday. He wasn't good.
Starting point is 01:59:56 He was great. He threw a pick. Think about this. I have no problem with the interception a game. If you're throwing 35 times a game, you're probably going to have two to three touchdowns a game. If you give me three touchdowns in a pick, I got no problem with it. Because don't throw the pick in the red zone.
Starting point is 02:00:09 That's it. By the way, three touchdowns a game, three times 16 is 48. one time 60. If you ended up every year and you gave me two and a half touchdowns a game, I'd end up with 38 touchdowns and one pick a game, 16 picks. I can live with that. I can absolutely live with that. What I can't live with is Tyrod Taylor not throwing the ball down field,
Starting point is 02:00:30 Alex Smith, not throwing the ball down field. So Sam Darnold's going to let it loose, and Sam Donald's going to make mistakes, and Sam Darnold's going to throw picks. We saw veteran quarterbacks yesterday struggling. We saw veteran quarterbacks getting hurt. Sam Darnold will not get me perfect tonight, but they're telling you they made the right choice. They had a real quarterback in New York and shipped him out.
Starting point is 02:00:51 Cleveland has Tyrod Taylor, and they would not put Baker in the game yesterday. Arizona couldn't score for 55 minutes, would not put Josh Rosen in. Buffalo was down 40-0. Didn't want to put Josh Allen in, and Baltimore's got Joe Flacco, they were winning. They didn't want to put Lamar Jackson in for a series, just kind of a goofy trick play.
Starting point is 02:01:10 So I think if you want to start keeping score on this, the Jets have already told you, we got our guy. He's ready to play. We think we have a good defense. We think our guy is ready to play. And if you watch USC this weekend, if you're a Jets fan, you have to feel like we got a pretty good player. Like if you're a Jets fan and you watch USC,
Starting point is 02:01:29 that program could not put back first downs together. Yeah, Twitter might be a vortex of insanity. I'm not going to go on Twitter tonight. No, no, no, no, no. I'm not going to get near it. but just Sam's going to be fine. The Jets are telling you how...
Starting point is 02:01:48 I said this about Mitch Trubisky. The bears are telling you what they think of Mitch Trubisky. They had a 20-0 lead in the second half. They didn't want him to throw the ball down the field. Teams will tell you, Carolina running a lot of that college stuff is telling you they think Cam, Eli.
Starting point is 02:02:05 The Giants are telling you, left tackle, draft a guard, running back, wide receiver, get an offensive coach. The Giants are telling you, Our guy's old. That's what the New York Giants are telling you. Our guy is old. Thanks for listening to The Herd podcast.
