Rob Parker.
Welcome into the Inside the Parker podcast.
The All-Star Game Edition.
Yes, I'll be in Cleveland on Tuesday for the Midsummer Classic.
Coming up on the program, we'll talk with former Major League Slugger and World Series champion, Cecil Fielder,
plus longtime Indians radio broadcaster Tom Hamilton.
drop by as well. That and much more. Let's go.
Better up. To lead off, it's getting robbed.
And keep them up. Rob's hot take on the three biggest stories in Major League Baseball.
Number one. Sadly, Major League Baseball lost one of its own. Tyler Skaggs, the Angels were in Texas
to play the Rangers, and that game, of course, was canceled, and reports indicated that he was
found dead in this hotel room about 2 p.m. on Monday, no foul play was suspected.
It's tragic news for both the Angels and the Major League Baseball community.
Mark Goobazar, former Major League player and Angels broadcaster, talked about Skaggs.
I remember, you know, with Nick Adenhart, when he was killed after a great start,
I remember doing the game with Rory Marcus.
And I remember the last thing I said, I said, this kid has arrived.
I think he's going to be something special then.
hours later he's no longer with us
and the team, you know, it was
incredibly tough there.
The team rallied and had
a, you know, did a really good job
playing baseball, but this one,
you know, this is, you know, I can honestly,
I don't really know how,
just judging for myself and, you know,
my preparation for a game, it just feels
completely different.
But I just, like I said,
I think the team rallies behind
Albert and Albert's such a strong person
that I think this is the time.
where we saw how he was in St. Louis, how his teammates just embraced the way St. Louis
the Cardinals gave him love there. I think right now Albert's going to need to, he has to be
the leader, and he's a perfect guy to lead him into this game tonight because, you know, this is
one of his games. I don't know how they're going to react. I don't know how I would be able to react.
I mean, number two. We have to start ringing the bell for Josh Bell, the Pirates First
basement. Are you kidding me Monday night? Did you see the power display this guy put on?
Three home runs, seven RBIs in a big time whooping of the Chicago Cubs. It was amazing.
And he has had a first half, 25 home runs, 77. You heard it right, 77 RBIs. Yes, he's going to the
All-Star game as a reserve. And remember,
Bell hit 26 home runs as a rookie in 2017, but he dropped to just 12 last year in a disappointing sophomore campaign.
This year, they're talking about the biggest key for him is he's been way more aggressive at the plate.
And boy, has that paid off.
He has been fun to watch Josh Bell.
He is a star in Pittsburgh should be happy to watch.
this guy swing the bat.
Number three. At some point,
Mike Trout has to participate
in the home run derby. It's only fair.
It's what fans want to see.
They want to see the big stars get up and take their wax.
We've seen other stars do it.
We saw Bryce Harper put on a show in D.C.
We saw Aaron George put on a show down in Miami.
But this year's headliner
are some of the young players, which is cool,
including Josh Bell, Ronald O'Cunia Jr., Peter Lonzo,
and best of all, Vlad Guerrero Jr.
He only has eight home runs, but that's all right.
We want to see him get his wax.
This could be a show, an epic show, to watch with all these young guys
taking their hacks in Cleveland.
But that Monday, the home run derby is one of the best things that we see
when we talk about All-Star games and All-Star weekends and skill events and all that.
So it'll be a younger crowd, guys to look forward to my money's on Vlad Guerrero Jr.
To win the home run derby this year.
Here comes the big interview.
Listen and learn.
Oh, it's so good.
Let's welcome into the podcast.
Former Major League Slugger Cecil Field, of course, three-time All-Star.
World Series champion, led the American League in home runs in 90 and 91.
What's up, Seth?
How you doing?
I'm hanging in there, man.
Just trying to live a good life.
That's it.
I understand.
Let's talk about some baseball.
There's so many things going on.
And first, something you're very familiar with the home run.
Major League baseball just set a record last month and this month for the most home runs,
you know, in a month in baseball.
to back months. What is going on? Is the ball juice, is it that guys don't mind striking out
and just swing for the fences? What's going on? I think that's what it is. I think, you know,
the teams are going with this, you know, with the paperwork to say what's best, you know,
swing up just in case you hit it. The strikeouts aren't going to matter. It's just like making
another out and these guys are just going for it every time they get up to the play.
Is it fun to watch? I mean, you were a slug.
I don't even watch baseball right now.
I just, I can't get into it.
I just don't, I mean, I just, in matter of fact, before you call, I just got off the phone
with Eric Davis, and we were talking about the same thing.
I mean, the game is not like we played it anymore.
It just isn't.
And I just don't enjoy, I just don't enjoy watching it.
The analytics and what's happened is amazing because all the shifts,
cess and the stuff that's going on, you just, there are no people on the base pass.
It's either home runs or strikeouts.
I mean, am I right?
I just, I mean, it's just, I mean, it's just not the game that we played anymore.
I'm just going to put it like that.
I mean, I ain't going to bad talk to players that are playing the day
because we do have some great players that are playing the game.
But at the end of the day, we're not really playing baseball anymore.
We're playing paperwork.
Right, there you go.
That's a good way of saying it, paperwork.
It's amazing.
Now, how's your son Prince doing?
with retirement.
He's doing good.
It took him a little time to get used to, you know,
not having to go to work every day.
But I think now that he's got the time to spend with his boys
and watch them play travel ball
and, you know, them entering high school,
I think, you know, he's starting to enjoy itself a little bit.
You know, I think those two neck injuries kind of took a lot out of them, you know.
And, you know, it's hard, man, when you ain't healthy, you know.
I mean, it's hard.
No doubt.
And for me, too, to see Prince and where he went in his career and how good he was.
I remember me and you having lunch in Detroit years ago, and you told me how good Prince was in Little League.
Do you remember?
And I was like, you just sound like a dad bragging about his kid.
Do you remember that?
Mr. Illis told me the same thing.
I told you, this dude is going to be a stud, man.
You told me.
Hey, I only think, you know, I can only tell people what I know.
I know baseball, and I know players.
I know who's going to.
I told Mr. Hillis one time, you know,
Mr. Illich told me, as a matter of fact,
Dave Dombrowski was a gym at the time,
and Mr. Hillis wanted me to just do some roving
and just kind of give him some information on the kids
that he had down in the Miami Legion organization, you know?
And Mr. Hillis said, you know,
Seth, every time I'm into your name around here,
everybody gets nervous.
There's a reason for that, Mr. Illich,
because they know I'm not going to lie to you.
I'm going to tell you the truth.
No doubt.
That's what's missing from baseball.
You don't have people that will stand up and buck the system.
Everybody's got to be on the same page, and sometimes the same page ain't right.
How about when you look at even the managers now, and I agree with you, look at what they've done.
The old school managers, there's no place for Dusty Baker, for Joe Girardi, for Buck Show Walter.
They don't want those guys.
They don't want them because this is the reason why they don't want them.
because the managers that they have today aren't even making out the lineup.
I mean, what you need Dusty Baker for, what you need Buck Show walking for,
what you need all these old school cats for if they're not going to run their teams.
If their teams are going to be run from the folks that are filling out this paperwork,
they're going to tell them who to put in and where to put them in the money.
You know, I just don't agree with Judge Hitton second.
I can't agree with that.
I mean, I just, there's something, you know, Sparky used to say it all the time.
3, 4, 5 is the cats
are driving the run.
You guys got to bring home
the bacon.
Judge can't bring home to bacon.
I don't think hit the second.
He can't.
No, I hear you.
We got a great team,
but I just don't think it's set up properly.
When we talk about
the major leagues,
the one thing that stands out there
are now 40 players currently
whose dad's played in the big leagues.
You know, Cody Bellinger is tearing it up,
Fernando Tatis,
and of course,
Black Guerrero Jr.
Why is that?
Is that because you guys were able to give
and provide your kids like the training,
you know, people to work out with them,
eating right, and the instructions
to make it to the next level?
You know what I think more than anything?
We got an opportunity to let our kids smell it.
I think more than anything.
I mean, I got one.
I got a younger kid that's a great athlete,
but he didn't get a chance to smell the dirt.
So he's not really as interested in.
baseball than Prince was.
He's a football guy.
Prince got to smell the dirt.
He got to see it on the daily base.
Prince used to take batting practice at the old Tiger Stadium.
That's what I'm telling you.
I mean, he was in it to win it.
I mean, these kids, these kids of all these guys you just mentioned,
they've all smelled the dirt.
They know what it's like to go on a road trip.
They know what it's like to take BP, take ground balls at a big league stadium.
So they got ice in their veins.
They ain't nervous about nothing.
and their dad's was nervous because we had to provide for our families, right?
These kids are like, hey, let's go get it.
They're not even worried about anything,
and I think that's the best thing that they can have gone for themselves,
that they don't fear nothing.
No doubt.
And last but not least, that home run you hit off the roof at Tiger Stadium,
speaking of Tiger Stadium in 1999.
I hit a couple of them, though, Rob.
You got one in 93.
I got one in 91 because I hit Stewart out of the stadium in 91.
Out of that place.
Unbelievable.
Which is the best home run you ever hit, though?
Well, I think the one we hit in Milwaukee, when I hit it out of the stadium off, please say.
And the other one, too, is when you won the World Series with the Yankees in 1996, you told...

You said there's nothing better than winning in New York.
What was that like to join that team and win?
Man, let me tell you something.
I wish, I wish, I keep telling folks this all the time.
I talk to Willie Harton when I talked to him.
I wish I had the opportunity to win in Detroit.
It just didn't happen for me, right?
But when they gave me the opportunity to go to New York,
number one, I was shocked.
I thought I was going to Texas.
I didn't think I was going to New York.
So number one, I was shocked.
But number two, when I got there,
it was all about, you know, play today, win today.
That's it.
I mean, they had a different mentality
that I had never seen before in baseball.
It was like, we're not just coming to the ballpark to play.
We're coming here to win.
And that right there, my friend,
kind of put a whole new vibe
in the way I was going out there to play the game.
His name is Cecil Fielder, one of the best sluggers we've ever seen in baseball,
and one of my favorite people I've ever covered in the game, man.
We appreciate you.
Thanks for joining the podcast.

It's time for the Pocket Protector Central.
The analytic numbers you need to know, well, maybe.
FS1's Anthony Masterson is his name.
BS analytics is his game.
What you got for us today, Anthony?
All right, Rob, but we've talked about expected batting average, exit velocity, and launch
angle here on this podcast, but let's put them all together into a fun little metric
called barrels.
Now, a barrel is a stat-cast metric, also a classification of a batted ball event
where the expected batting average is higher than 500.
exit velocity is higher than 98 miles per hour,
and the launch angle is between 8 and 50 degrees.
It's a stat that rewards you for a high quality of contact.
Now, the beauty of a stat like barrels is it's fun,
and it can confirm your suspicions as to who is crushing the baseball this season.
The Barrel's leaderboard reads like an all-star team.
Trout, Alonzo, Freeman, Yelich, Sanchez, Akunia.
For the most part, all guys we're going to be seeing in Cleveland next Tuesday night on Fox.
Now, one outlier this season is Yankees catcher Gary Sanchez.
Now, the Cracken has recorded a barrel in nearly 15% of his plate appearances over two percentage points higher than the next closest player, Joey Gallo.
Now, in the stat cast era since 2015, only one player has ever recorded a season where even 14% of his plate appearances ended in a barrel.
And that was John Carlos Stanton in his injury shortened season in 2015.
The Barrel's metric will definitely be a part of Sanchez's MVP argument in the American League this year.
All right, Anthony.
Appreciate you, as always.
I don't know if I'm using any of those stats, but thanks.
That ball is.
It was a big week in the big leagues.
Who's a who's up?
Or is it fair?
And now, here's shadowleague.com MLB insider, J.R. Gamble.
Met's rookie Peter Alonzo is batting 278, 28 home.
run 64 RBIs and has an OPS of 0.99.
Is it foul or fair to say Alonzo is the National League rookie of the year?
No doubt about it.
That's fair.
It's a fair ball.
If not for Alonzo, Catea Jr. would be the favorite to win the rookie of the year.
Last night, a blown call changed the game.

It's Isaiah Thomas.
And I'm C.J. Toledano, and our podcast, Point Game is about defying the odds.
Like LeBron heading into the playoffs.
without Luca and Austin Reed.
And finding ways to win no matter what.
He's the smartest player to ever play the game.
His IQ is at a level that we've never seen before.
And he knows.
Without Luca and Austin Reeves,
I got to manipulate the game.
We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs.
I think Joker's going to be exhausted this series
because when they don't have Rudy in the lineup,
he has to really guard guys like Nas Reid.
He has to guard Julius Randall.
And then he has to give us everything he gives us
on the night-to-night basis on offense.
And when IT's friends stop by, like Quentin Richardson,
we dive into some playoff history too.
Steve Nass would get that thing.
That man, hell get the flying.
He running up the court,
licking his fingers why he got the ball.
Like, you go through a training camp with that, Isaiah.
You figure it out real quick.
Get your ass up and down the court,
and you're going to get the ball.

and Eliza has such a big lead, Rob, with 28 homers that Tatis Jr. couldn't possibly catch up,
even if Aliza fell asleep by a tree.
Tatiz has been impressive and proven to be everything he said he'd be.
But Aliza has played almost twice as many games, but without him, the match would be even worse.
Patiz might end up being a better player in the long run.
But with 11 homers at this point, it's in like Neil Contra Lanzo,
where, in my opinion, locked up the rookie of the year weeks ago.
and he's doing it in New York
to see it where the Mets are in disarray
and getting raked through the cold
every day. Eliza will
take one to the rookie of the year
no matter what that he's does.
All right, J.R., we appreciate you.
I happen to agree.
I think that is fair.
Fasten your seatbelt.
Give you fuel, give me fire, give me double-trial
is I. Here comes Parker's
top three MLB teams this week.
Number three.
The Atlanta Braves are the third best team indeed in Major League Baseball.
What a June the Braves had.
They went 20 and 8 in the month.
And here's another one.
They were out of first place by two games.
And now as of Tuesday, lead the NLEs by five and a half.
Look at the ground that the Braves made up.
They also picked up Dallas Kiko, which is a big pickup in the month.
And best of all, Freddie Freeman had an unbelievable June, 33 RBIs in the month,
the most by an Atlanta Braves in any month ever.
So there you go.
The Atlanta Braves are coming on strong.
Number two.
The Los Angeles Dodgers, they keep winning.
As of Tuesday, 57.
and 29. Cody Bellinger continues to mash. They continue to steamroll over the NL West. The Dodgers
look like a juggernaut. They are in a class by themselves. But still, I have them as the
second best team in the league, not the first, but not because of anything that they've done wrong.
They've played about perfect baseball as you can. Number one. The New York freaking
Yankees have returned to the top spot.
Not only do they win games all over MLB America, they can go abroad.
They went to London and crushed the Red Sox.
It was a total of 50 runs in the two-game series.
Yankees get both.
The Yankees in the last 10 games coming into Tuesday, 9-1, on pace to win 106 games,
a ton of home runs, a ton of home runs.
a ton of runs, more players on the injured list, and they just keep winning.
They are 31 and 14 at home and amazing 23 and 14 away.
The New York freaking Yankees are the best team in baseball.

I can post a picture that a girl that is way skinnier than I am, a size 2, a size 4,
the same exact picture. And I look vulgar because I'm thicker.
But if a thinner girl does it, it's not that much of a big deal.
And that's what I'm not okay with.
Because why? Why? Because I have cellulite, because I have thick thighs.
I can't do that. I can't feel sexy in my own skin.
And those are the things that I want to break
because there are so many women like me
and I want to be and represent us, you know?
Obviously, there's always room for improvement.
I always want to look better.
I want to work out.
I want to lose weight.
But in reality, this is the body God gave me
and I've never really been skinny.

Shaking my head.

trash to at Rob Parker, FS1 on Twitter.
When Rob was a newspaper columnist, he lived by this motto.
If I'm writing, I'm ripping.
Let's bring in a writer or broadcaster, old or new.
Let's welcome in Tom Hamilton, the radio voice of the Cleveland Indians for the last 30 years.
Tom, thank you so much for joining the podcast.
Oh, my gosh, it's my pleasure, Rob.
good to get caught up with you again.
No doubt about it. And big doings in Cleveland coming up, Monday night to Home Run
Derby, Tuesday the All-Star Game. Just tell me about Cleveland hosting the All-Star
game coming up and how excited people are.
Yeah, you know what, Rob, it's a big event. As you know, these All-Star Games,
especially I think Major League Baseball's All-Star Game, is still the best of the pro-sports
events because maybe it's the time of the year.
It's not like maybe the NHL where it seems like
are they playing without a goalie?
I was going to say when they score 11 or 12 goals, right.
The NBA plays no defense and nobody wants to play in the
Pro Bowl because they don't want to get hurt. I can't blame them.
So, you know, this game still has
maybe not the same meaning that it had
when, you know, we were kids, but it still means a lot.
I think what baseball has done a great job with,
Rob is the fact now they've got this play ball event, which kind of takes over your city for the whole week of the old star break.
And, you know, it'll be downtown at the convention center in Cleveland, which is relatively brand new.
That's how they got the Republican National Convention when it took place a few years ago.
And so that event really gets, from the convention of the home run, hitting contest, it's a contest.
See the kids that organization but are future stars.
So, yeah, it is.
Recently flew out of the Cleveland Airport and welcoming the All-Stars and the banners and whatnot,
even in the airport, letting people know what is coming up.
Tom, tell me about the Indians this year.
I know they're 45 and 38 as of Tuesday, and people expected them to be in the mix,
obviously, to win a division.
The Minnesota Twins caught fire and have been playing great.
But tell me about the Indians, can they still win the division?
and are they built to win a division?
My boss is.
No, I won't do it.
No, I don't think we are, to be honest, Rob.
400 RBIs and, you know, over 100 home runs like the Indians have lost from the lineups of a couple of the past two years.
You know, I think it's tough.
I mean, and then when you couple that with the fact that you lost 60% of your rotation for most of the year,
one of those guys being a two-time
Cy Young Award winner,
Cory Klover, a perennial 17-18
game winner in Carlos Carrasco,
Mike Clevenger, who was emerging
as one of the top young starters in the game.
You can't lose the offense, Rob,
and then have the strength
of your club being your starting rotation,
and that gets decimated either by injury or illness,
and it's just kind of been one of those
you're going, nobody knows why.
And then I think the other credit, Rob,
has to go to Minnesota. They're having one of those special years, and nobody can predict that.
And, you know, if I'm the twins, I've capitalized on it, there are no guarantees they can do what
they've done this year in other years. So, you know, that's the beauty of our game.
When you play 106 months, when you play a...
No doubt about it. His name is Tom Hamilton, the Indians' play-by-play radio voice for 30 years.
And Tom, thank you so much for joining the podcast.
No, there are flights to go from L.A. to Cleveland.
Yes, I'll be in Cleveland. I'll see you.
All right, bud.
Thanks, Rob.
All right. Thank you, Tom.
Closer.
MLB is better than the NFL or NBA, and it isn't even close.
Baseball is better than the NBA and NFL, especially when we talk about All-Star games.
The All-Star game is next Tuesday night in Cleveland, and let's just face it.
It's not even close.
The Pro Bowl is a snooze bowl.
The NBA All-Star game is comical.
They're ready.
They almost score 200 points each team.
There's nothing to see there.
Same thing if I want to throw in the NHO All-Star game
where they score 11, 12 goals in an All-Star game.
Are you kidding me?
The baseball All-Star game is still played like the game is played.
They don't throw the ball underhand.
They don't let balls go by and not play defense.
They play the game the way it's supposed to be played,
and that's why the midsummer classic is the best.
Can't wait to watch it.
The matchups, the played appearances about the big hitters
against the big time pitchers.
The All-Star game is head and shoulders above the NBA,
the NFL, and yes, for this week only we're throwing in the NHL.
That's why baseball is king of the world.
In the words of New York TV legend, the late Bill Jorgensen,
thanking you for your time, this time, until next time.
Rob Parker, out.
He can't get it.
This could be an inside of Parker.
See you next week.
