Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Last night, a blown call changed a game. This morning, the internet lost its mind, and nobody's telling you exactly what happened. That's where Sports Slice comes in. I'm Timbo, and every episode, we're cutting through the noise,
Starting point is 00:00:16 breaking down the biggest moments in sports and giving you the real story behind the headline. And we're going straight to the source, the athletes themselves, their locker room stories, their reactions in the moment, and the stuff nobody gets to hear. Listen to Sports Slice on the Iheart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more, follow Timbo Sliced Life 12 in the TikTok podcast network on TikTok.
Starting point is 00:00:39 Another podcast from some SNL late night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smigel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter.
Starting point is 00:01:03 Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and Friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. What's up, guys? This is Clivert Taylor the Fourth. And on my podcast, The Cliverts Show, I'm bringing you conversations about all kinds of stuff. Like being an internet famous referee. We're in the middle of a game. This linebacker, this linebacker walks up to me. He goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her.
Starting point is 00:01:26 What? Time out. Quarterback on office blue with 42. Hey, Wreck, my mama want you to weigh better. What? Hey, Miss Parker. Listen to the Clifford show on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast.
Starting point is 00:01:48 What's up, fam? It's Isaiah Thomas. And I'm C.J. Toledano. It's our favorite time of the year on our podcast point game, the playoffs. We're digging into the biggest surprises of the season. And I'm looking back on some of my greatest playoff moments. If we didn't talk ever again, I was harmed. you just understood.
Starting point is 00:02:03 That's how personal it got. Wow. Then after that game seven, Mark keep coming until he's like, you know I love you, dog. You know, it's all love. This was just playoffs. This was just basketball.
Starting point is 00:02:13 So listen to Point Game on the IHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Thanks for listening to The Heard podcast. Be sure to catch us live every weekday from 12 to 3 Eastern, 9 to noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and FS1. Starting point is 00:02:40 Ah, here we go on a Tuesday. Cannot believe all the topics we have live in Los Angeles. This is The Heard on all our platforms. Fox Sports Radio, IHeart Radio, Sirius XM Channel 83, and right here in Living Color, FS1. Now, on the radio side, you will hear Joy Taylor. I can see here right there. You will not see, you will hear Joy Taylor
Starting point is 00:03:09 because obviously with the virus, we're in a different situation where we are stringing this puppy together. It's unique, but I'm driving to work every day. We're the Spartan crew. They're kicking butt, taking names. And Joy Taylor, how are you? I'm doing great. How are you calm?
Starting point is 00:03:28 I'm hanging in there. Danny Cannell, Howie Long, Joel Clatt, Matt Mosley, funny guy from Dallas. stops by today. So here we go. We got a great show. A ton of topic. So I'm going to go about 10 minutes here.
Starting point is 00:03:41 I got a couple of things on my mind. Number one, Travis Frederick is an all-world NFL player. He retired at 29 years old. Now, I think that's great for football, that he had a great career, doesn't have to sign a third contract, he's going to be a Hall of Famer, made a bunch of money.
Starting point is 00:03:55 I'll get into that later. What does it mean for DAC? First of all, this guy's great. It's the best center in football. The last two years, the Cowboys rankings with Travis Frederick, yards per play number one. When he's gone, 22nd. Sacks, second fewest allowed in the NFL.
Starting point is 00:04:17 When he's gone, second most allowed. He is a rock star. And Dallas is O line. We've said this for the last year. It's not a revelation is getting old. Tyron Smith entered the league at 20. He's an old 29. Zach Martin is excellent.
Starting point is 00:04:34 He's an older 29. It's starting to deteriorate. This is the first sign for a great guy who retired at the perfect time. This is what I've been saying about that Prescott. Teams in leagues with salary caps get bad fast when they sign good players, Dak Prescott, to great contracts. Joe Flacco, Ravens, great organization, great roster, signed a good player, Joe Flacco, to a great contract. They weren't the same for three years.
Starting point is 00:05:13 Brandon Cooks with the Rams, they'd get rid of him tomorrow, good player, great contract for his skill set. You can't do it in salary cap leagues. You can get away with it if you're the Yankees, maybe the Dodgers, maybe the Red Sox, can't get away with it in hockey, basketball, and the NFL. Okay, we have never, this is a prime example. That's why Russell Wilson gets the money, because I've seen Russell Wilson carry battle lines from mostly year one in the NFL. I've seen him carry average receivers.
Starting point is 00:05:47 I saw him last year carry the Seahawks when the running backs all got hurt. That's why when there was a question about Russell Wilson, Pete Carroll and John Snyder signed him in an hour. I've never seen Dak Prescott. Anytime an O'Lignment gets hurt, anytime Zika is suspended, pre-A-Mari Cooper, I've never seen him carry the team. Last year, Patrick Mahomes
Starting point is 00:06:12 led the Chiefs in the playoffs in rushing the last two games. Forget his passing. He led him in rushing. I have seen Russell Wilson, Aaron Rogers carry bad defenses. Patrick Mahomes in the playoffs. Deshawn Watson with a lousy running game and a terrible offensive line.
Starting point is 00:06:33 Carson Wentz last year. Deck chairs and lawn furniture got Philadelphia to the playoffs. You cannot pay good players great money. I more than ever, I want to franchise that. I want to see him now without the best center. He's still got a great receiver. He's still got a great running back. He's still got the game's first, second or third best left tackle.
Starting point is 00:06:55 It's still a top 10 offensive line, though it's not as good now. But you can't do this. You cannot do it. And so, and I like Dak. I've said this before. I like him. But there's a reason. Every time somebody gets hurt or suspended,
Starting point is 00:07:14 Dax numbers go down. He does not have the ability to take average parts and elevate them. That defines Russell Wilson. That defines him. That's who Russell Wilson is. He's never had a great O line. He's never out a top 5-0 line. I mean, last year they brought, was it last year, they brought Marshawn Lynch out of retirement?
Starting point is 00:07:35 I mean, come on. So when people say, well, you don't like Dak. No, I do like him. But to pay him 36 million, I got to love him. And he has never shown an ability to carry. And this is why Patrick Mahomes and Carson Wentz and Aaron Rogers and Russell Wilson and Deshawn Watson, I'm going to pay him whatevs. I'm going to pay, give me the check. let me sign him and I'll pay him early.
Starting point is 00:08:00 With Dak, now I'm more inclined than ever to wait. Let's see what he can do because he still has Zeke, still has Tyron Smith, still has Zach Martin, still has Amari Cooper, he's got a Super Bowl winning hand coach. Let me see what you can do when you don't have everything perfectly aligned. My guess is, not as good. I want to shift to this. So I have opinions and I don't expect everybody to agree. with him. In fact, it's probably more fun if you don't always agree with them.
Starting point is 00:08:32 I don't think I'm a contrarian. I tend to see things through a business perspective, although I am, you know, I'm pro-mobility. I'm pro-mobility for players, not because I love all the players, because I think from a business standpoint, all Americans have the right to be mobile. So I'm going
Starting point is 00:08:48 to support a Kevin Durant. I'm going to support a LeBron James. I'm going to support great players, baseball players, Mookie Betts, going Boston to Los Angeles. I support all players all the time having mobility because it's good business. I don't even have to like the guy. It's good business.
Starting point is 00:09:05 But sometimes I have an opinion that I think is obvious and I don't get the pushback. It's like, are you people crazy? Let me ask you right now today. Tom Brady's no longer a patriot. I'm going to give you two options. Bill Belichick has a plan or Bill Belichick's an idiot. I'm going to go with that. The former he's got a plan.
Starting point is 00:09:33 So yesterday, they released kicker Stephen Gaskowski. He's arguably the second or third best kicker in NFL history. He's got years left to kick. Why would they do that? They also will not pursue Teddy Bridgewater, who I love, and Andy Dalton, who I don't, but both are far better than their current quarterbacks. They also let their two best linebackers, two most productive linebackers go. It's interesting.
Starting point is 00:09:59 It's almost as if they have a plan. It's not, you're not going to tank. It's not tanking. Did Miami, we called it tanking, right? But in the end, you can build a culture without going 17, 16, and 0. Miami built a great culture last year and started terribly. You think New England's culture is going to erode because they lose a bunch of games 27, 23 now, because they have the worst weapons in the league and Jarrett Stidham and don't even have their kicker?
Starting point is 00:10:28 Belichick folks is not winging it. He's got a plan. He's manipulated officials. He's manipulated game plans. He's manipulated opposing coaches. He manipulates everybody in the league. You think he's just winging it. This dude's got a plan for lunch.
Starting point is 00:10:45 You think he's winging it. Think about this. Who has the most picks in this year's NFL draft? Miami. Oh, that's right. Brian Flores. He used to be a patriot. Who has the second most pick?
Starting point is 00:10:58 picks in this draft. Oh, Bill Belichick, he's a patriot. You think they just stumbled into those? Oh my gosh, we got 13 draft picks. Where did they come from? Both have a plan. I said this last year. Joy is my witness. We both said this. What were the dolphins at one point? They were oh in September. And everybody was banging on him. And Joy and I went out and said, I love what they're doing. They're playing their butt off. They got rid of a lot of good play. players, but you, remember what he said? There's being bad and there's being bad with a plan. Miami was bad with a plan, and by the end of the year, they won five of their last nine
Starting point is 00:11:37 games. Think about this. Belichick has 12 draft picks for this draft. Next year, they're going to get a compensatory pick for Brady, Jamie Collins, and Vanoy. They're going to move these picks to next year's draft, several of them. Because they have automatically seven. The compensatories give them minimum 10, maybe 11 eventually.
Starting point is 00:12:03 They'll move two or three picks from this draft where they have 12 to next year's. And they will have 13 picks, 14 picks in next year's draft. And two great quarterbacks coming out. Cincinnati's going to be bad. Let's say they end up with the number one pick. They're not going to take one Joe Burrow. Bill Belichick calls and says, you want nine picks? you think Cincinnati's going to turn that down?
Starting point is 00:12:29 In a division with Big Ben, Lamar Jackson, and Baker, Mayfield, and those rosters, Cincinnati gets their quarterback this year, they're going to turn that down. Belichick's got a plan. The plan is moving picks he has this year to next year, going into next year's draft with his normal picks, his multiple compensatories, a handful push to next year, having 12 to 13 or 14 picks willing to give up nine if they go six. and 10, lose a lot of close games, maintain the integrity of their culture in a draft with the two
Starting point is 00:13:03 best college prospects since Andrew Luck. They don't have to be the worst team in the league. If Cincinnati's the worst, they're not going to take nine picks from New England. If the Giants are the worst, and they'll be bad, they're not going to take nine picks. They don't need to get Trevor Lawrence. They could get Justin Fields. They just need one of the two. they've this is amazing to me this is not difficult they don't need all their picks this year they're going to get compensatories for brady and collins van noy they're going to move a handful of picks this year to next and they're going to have eight nine picks they're willing to give to every team above them in the draft that already has a quarterback Arizona could be bad they're not
Starting point is 00:13:48 going to draft another quarterback Cincinnati Giants could be bad they're not going to draft another quarterback. You don't think the Giants or the Bengals or Arizona wouldn't take eight picks from New England if the Patriots finish six and ten and call and say, we want a quarterback. Kyler Murray needs help. Daniel Jones needs help. Joe Burrell's going to need help. Many of the bad teams next year, except Jacksonville, they'll probably draft a quarterback. Many of the bad teams have a quarterback. The saturation point in the NFL at quarterbacks, there's just not many teams that need them. And three to four of them, are going to get one this year.
Starting point is 00:14:26 I still contend the idea that Belichick doesn't have any plan for next year. It's just he's just the kicker. They release him. They don't go after any quarterbacks. They let their top two linebacker playmakers go. And you think they're just making it up. This idea, you've got to get over tanking. You got to get over.
Starting point is 00:14:51 It's not like Belichick goes out and designs a bad. game plan. Belichick goes into a game knowing we're limited this year. I'm going to position ourselves next year. We're going to fight like mad. But if we're seven and nine and six and ten, 13 to 14 draft picks, not everybody above us needs a quarterback. In fact, ask yourself right now, after this draft, the charges will get theirs. We know that. The Bengals will get theirs. And Miami's getting theirs. Look around the league outside of Jacksonville. and New England. Who's desperate for a quarterback?
Starting point is 00:15:26 There isn't one. I mean, again, Chicago's tied up in Foles's contract, so they obviously, they can't bail on that in a year. This is not a difficult one, right? You think either Belichick's dumb or has a plan. Which one do you think sounds right? They're not winging it here. Oh, it's so exciting.
Starting point is 00:15:49 God, I'll get to maintain my love for New England. You know, just a little year hiccup. Market goes down briefly, pops back up in New England. It's all very good. Coming up next, why Travis Frederick's retirement is great, actually great for the NFL. Plus Danny Connell and Howie Long coming up, live in Los Angeles. It's The Herd. Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports Radio,
Starting point is 00:16:20 FS1, and the IHeard Radio app. Last night, a blown call changed a game. This morning, the internet lost its mind. Starting point is 00:17:39 And we're still chasing it, and we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth? Are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro.
Starting point is 00:17:55 Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Starting point is 00:18:53 Hey, I'm Jared Adano. You might know me as that loud guy who yells out, help on the internet. Help! Somebody! Please! But there's so much more to me than that. I'm an actor. I'm a comedian. And recently, I've become quite the helper myself.

Enjoy Taylor around the corner.
Starting point is 00:20:06 Danny Connell. Howie Long, the always hysterical. Matt Mosley, Joel clad on the phone. It is great to have you on a Tuesday. You know, I was talking to friends in the industry yesterday and I said at some point, we're going to run out of topics if we don't have games. but we have had seven straight shows without games where, you know, the NFL is just a gift that keeps on giving this free agency period.
Starting point is 00:20:27 NFL free agency will be much better than NBA free agency this year. Now, last year, NBA free agency was like crazy fun. This year, not so much. But this year, the NFL free agency, the Brady move gave us huge, huge talking points. And today we have another story today, which I think I tend to be an optimist. You know, I go online. Twitter is such a vile, snarky place where if you just add context to this virus, you get shouted down from the mob. I tend to be somebody that looks at death rates and data points, and I think, okay, we're getting close. Stay inside. Another 10, 12 days. We're going to get past this. You can either be negative or positive.
Starting point is 00:21:06 So this morning, I see a lot of media people. Travis Frederick retired. He's a great football player. He's 29. And you can take two views on it. And a lot of the media, snarky and cynical. Oh, it's bad for football. here comes the end. No, no, no, no, no, no, no. It is great for football. It is great that great players don't have to go to a third contract. Folks, football is a very safe sport.
Starting point is 00:21:33 If the collision window is from 14 to 15 years of age and you retire after a second NFL contract at 29, Football is less safe if the collision window is eight years old, which is stupid, no kids should be hitting at eight, and you have to sign a fourth contract and then stumble the rest of your life. You go from a 30-year window to about a 14-year window. We also have better equipment than ever fewer. I mean, good God, they don't hit in college football practice after September, and the new CBA in the NFL, nobody hits anymore at practice.
Starting point is 00:22:07 Ooh, another game, yes, and no hitting at practice. football when the collision window shrinks, and it's shrinking because practices are lightening up, equipment's getting safer, and players like Travis Frederick, and Calvin Johnson, and Doug Baldwin, and Andrew Luck, and Luke Keekley, and Rob Grunkowski don't have to have a fourth contract or sometimes even a third contract. You know what I mean? This is not an unsafe sport. Football, I mean, I could argue hockey. hockey, you get all the concussions, all the collisions, it's daunting travel. I mean, I know hockey guys who have told me the binge drinking is horrible because of the fighting, missing teeth, a badge of honor. In the NFL, it's a game a week, no hitting in practice.
Starting point is 00:22:58 Increasingly, light workload, better equipment. Football's always been great at adapting. Baseball's a great sport. It's lousy at adapting. It takes forever to get anything done. Some of that's the strength of the players union. And in the NFL, you've got a weaker player union. So generally, you don't go on strikes.
Starting point is 00:23:18 It's a fair deal for owners who don't feel like, listen, they're going to give you more of the revenue, and it makes a lot more revenue. But I've never sided with players and strikes. I generally side for an even playing field. 48, 49% of the revenue split, allow players more guaranteed money and good health. insurance and get them out of the sport by 29.
Starting point is 00:23:41 Travis Frederick leaving now is great news for everybody except back. It's great news for football. I don't want Andrew Luck playing if he's in pain. I don't want Calvin Johnson playing if he's hurt. I don't want Luke Keekly getting another concussion. I don't want to see guys have Hall of Fame speeches and they're, you know what I mean? Honestly, they're hobbling around. They go up to the dais.
Starting point is 00:24:00 It's embarrassing. I want guys going up looking like Howie Long and vibrant and dynamic and funny and smart. that's the imagery we see in football. I love football. It's getting safer. It really is. And go ahead, be negative. Oh, the 17th game. It equipment. You can't hit receivers anymore. You can't hit quarterbacks anymore. Remember when you guys were all shouting, oh, wear a dress. And I remember being at ESPN and saying, stop it. Do you love football? Then you want less violent hitting. We want our stars like Tom Brady to be 43 sleeping in kale pajamas. eating vegetable ice cream and keep playing.
Starting point is 00:24:41 Now, now offensive line guys, get out of here. Defensive line guys, get out of here. You know, positions linebackers, retire early, running backs. Get your money, save it, move on. But I look at the Travis Frederick situation. I'm like, love him. He had an illness. He dealt with it.
Starting point is 00:24:59 He stepped out. I'd vote him in the Hall of Fame. Absolutely. He's a great guy. He's an all-time cowboy. And he retires. now instead of another four years in hobbling. Joy Taylor with the news.
Starting point is 00:25:12 Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. Well, the NFL is no longer performing prospect visits and suspending all physicals. So Tua decided to give the league his own health update. He posted a short video doing a drill that showcased some mobility on his drop and his ability to pivot.
Starting point is 00:25:37 It wasn't very long, but it's just a little taste. He didn't show any signs of discomfort. And he's only two weeks. It's only two weeks after being cleared for football activity. He was cleared for football activity on March 9. Yeah, yeah, two weeks after. What did you think when you saw the video? Pow!
Starting point is 00:25:53 I mean, it was a very short video. It wasn't a very extensive video. But. Looks fast to me. He looks like he looks like he should look. Here's the thing. The suspension of the prospect visits and the workouts, that really hurts fringe guys, guys who are late in the draft, small school guys.
Starting point is 00:26:16 That's brutal for them. Because those are the times where you can increase your draft stock or pop, and that's not going to happen now, obviously. So scouts are going to have to do a little more extra work, which we're all at home right now, so watch some tape, you know, make some calls. But for guys like Tua, I mean, look, it's good that he put it. it out there. We all, we love workout videos in the media. We love them. We can't get enough of them. Keep putting out workout videos. Everyone, for whatever reason, we think we can dissect them.
Starting point is 00:26:43 But for Tua, we don't really know. We're not going to know until he gets out there and is an actual football activity. So if you love Tua, this is great to see. If you're skeptical about Tua, it's something, I guess. But to me, if you have an opportunity to draft Tua and you need a quarterback, you're drafting Tua. But that's all. I personally feel like there's going to be a trade up to get Tua. Yes. Yes. It was probably going to be the dolphins. This idea, I see all these mock drafts and the idea that people aren't going to move up, 10 of the last 15 quarterbacks taken in the first round, teams moved up for them.
Starting point is 00:27:12 They're moving up to it was the best high school player in the country before his injury, the best college quarterback in the country. And his new nine-second video is magic. It's magical. Well, he had hip surgery in November, so being cleared for football activity in March 9th is actually very impressive. But like I said, you've seen the tape, you know what he is, you're going to assume that he's healthy. And like you said, someone's going to trade up and get him. Well, Tom Brady joined the Bucks, a team that hasn't been to the playoffs since 2007.
Starting point is 00:27:40 It's obviously a huge deal for Tampa Bay. And linebacker Levante David thinks Brady is the piece they need to finally be a real contender. Very exciting, man. Very exciting. You know, like Gerald said, you know, we always be on the brink of getting there or having, you know, just a couple of mistakes. He'll know that garrs from not being in the playoffs or being like a competing in Super. Would you have a guy who can erase all that coming in a race?
Starting point is 00:28:03 all that and know what it takes to get there. You know, having him back to helm and being a leader, one of the leaves the football team, you know, hopefully you could put us over that hump, man, and get us there, you know, finally and get us to the big dance that we all, you know, all won. Kind of interesting, Super Bowls in Tampa this year. Well, listen, we both thought Teddy Bridgewater was a great fit there.
Starting point is 00:28:22 Why? Because we thought Teddy won't make a bunch of mistakes. This team had 35 turnovers at the quarterback position and went 7 and 9. okay and had I think I'm wrong I'm right here six one possession losses if you just had Bree's Bridgewater or a Brady in Tampa and just had very few mistakes I think their offensive talent wins you nine 10 games I mean forget if you don't think Brady's got much left you know he's not going to make a ton of mistakes right I I don't think it's crazy to say seven and nine becomes 10 and six just off efficiency just off basic efficiency absolutely like the the turn of
Starting point is 00:29:01 were staggering. I mean, we kind of all joke about it, but when you really look at the numbers, it's absurd the amount of turnovers that they had. And while all turnovers are not made the same, that many turnovers, it doesn't matter. But the interesting thing about the whole elements of Brady in Tampa Bay to me is we have this image of him as, you know,
Starting point is 00:29:20 this patriot way and do your job. And, you know, like over the past couple years, we're starting to get a little bit more of a glimpse into his personality with Tom versus Time. and now he's a little more active on Instagram. I think we're going to get a totally open and new personality from Tom Brady. Like I think he's going to let loose a little bit. Not necessarily on the field.
Starting point is 00:29:43 I think he's still going to bring that same mentality and routine and all that. Yeah. But I think we're just going to get to see Brady play loose and have fun for the first time in a long time. And that's going to be a treat. So the Cowboys franchise tag DAC this year after failing to get a long-term deal done before the deadline. But it's a Marcus Lawrence. was also a franchise tag before he signed his big contract in 2019, and he thinks Dak is ready to earn his money.
Starting point is 00:30:07 Dak is a stand-up guy, and he already knows the type of situation and what to prepare for. I feel like he's the ultimate leader, so just understanding his character, I already know Dak is going to be ready for this position, and when he thrived and that nobody can save, so y'all don't have to pay him his money. So it's all the chips is in his hand, and, you know, he'll do this thing. You need this to say, you do not agree with tomorrow.
Starting point is 00:30:31 I think it's the perfect time to franchise him. $33 million is a ton of money. And then if you like, by the way, if you like him halfway through the season without Travis Frederick, working a contract, sign it before the end of the season and be like, dude, we just had to have eight to ten games with McCarthy and without the center. I mean, listen, if we live in a country, if you can be offered 33 million and turn it and say, as a fourth round pick and you're offended, it's a great league in a great country. If that's the worst case scenario, that is a great country to live in. Well, I think they should have paid, Dax, but I'm with you, especially this Travis
Starting point is 00:31:07 Frederick thing changes things a lot. Best center in the league, I think. First or second best center in the league last seven, eight years. And many people think that Dack is completely dependent on his weapons and his offensive line. So it's really all in Dax's hands at this point, as it was last year. But now you have the new coach, you have Travis Frederick retired, pretty much everyone. and it's been paid and it's down to the line, your franchise tag.
Starting point is 00:31:28 So he just has to go out there and prove it at this point. Yep. Joy of the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Hurd-Lie News. NFL analyst does college football. One of my favorite guys, Danny Cannell, joining us via sponsor by Mercedes-Benz, the best or nothing.
Starting point is 00:31:46 You know, I was saying about Travis Frederick is that everybody will look at that and say Andrew Luck and Calvin Johnson and Luke Keakley and Travis Frederick. They retire. It's bad for football. And Danny, I look at it. it differently. I look at Danny Connell and I think to myself, the football window of hitting should be 14 years old to 29. And unless you're a quarterback, you don't have to sign a third contract because you get so much money now. Once the football window is 12 years of hitting and not
Starting point is 00:32:10 28 and the league rules change and there's less hitting and there's less hitting at practice, I don't know. I look at Travis Frederick and I'm like, this is good news for the NFL. The great player can walk out of here and not have to go into his 30. because he doesn't have the money. Your thoughts on it? I agree with you. I think it is a good thing for the NFL. The fact that players are able to walk away earlier than they did before. You know, it's interesting because even when I was playing 15 or 20 years ago, almost every player that I played with had a number, right?
Starting point is 00:32:44 I mean, they had a number in their head. Once I get to X amount, once it's $10,000, $20 million, then I'm going to walk away. Look at the amounts of money these guys are able to make before. there, 30, and I know it's hard for fans to grasp, and I'm not saying it's every player that's out there. I do think there are some guys to play for the love of the game, but there are a lot of players who play as a means to an end. And once they reach that means, they can walk away. Like you said, they can do it before they face significant injuries and significant health risk
Starting point is 00:33:18 long term. So I feel bad for guys, because I do think guys out of this group, some of these guys you mentioned like Luke Keekely, I think he was a football, like meathead type, not in meathead, because he's very smart. But I think he's a guy who loves the game of football. I think Travis Frederick, same boat. I think these guys live and love the game of football, so I hate to see them have to walk away. But I love the fact that financially they're able to separate that and make an independent decision and say, you know what?
Starting point is 00:33:45 I'll be fine financially for the rest of my life. Now I can make a smart, educated decision on what's the best thing for me and my family. And a lot of times we're finding out that that sooner rather than later they're able to walk away. But I agree with you. The shorter window is better for the long-term health of the game. Yeah, better imagery when these guys walk to the Hall of Fame podium, not wobbly and hobbling. They walk up there full of energy. They look like Howie Long, where they're robust and dynamic and they're smiling and they're laughing.
Starting point is 00:34:12 Or Jason Taylor, Joy's brother, they walk up and you're like, God, these guys look unbelievable. You don't want an old hobbly guy walking up to the podium and it gives you sad imagery. Now, speaking of injuries, I think it's, I'm not even going to give away my rant, which I have later on Tua, but I think you or I are in the same boat. I believe in sports and in life, aggressive wins. Smart helps, but it doesn't win. You can go to the best prep schools, but if you're passive or you're frightened of your own shadow, you're not going to really ever hit it out of the park. You've got to be willing to move cross country. You've got to be willing to take stabs at stuff.
Starting point is 00:34:46 I would draft Tua. I would. would you knowing, give me kind of your summation of what you think he is and would you draft him? It's exactly what you're talking about. What is your appetite for risk? And I really think he's going to end up with the Miami Dolphins because the dolphins are in a position where they almost have to take this risk. They have to assume this. But I do think that Tua comes with significant risk.
Starting point is 00:35:12 I think Tua Tungavalo is the highest risk versus reward pick we've seen in probably a decade. Totally agree. Yep. I think the upside is absolutely there. What he's done on film has been incredible. I mean, his season was not that far removed from Joe Burroughs last year, and yet he couldn't complete it. And that's the part of the problem that I think is where the wrist comes in.
Starting point is 00:35:35 And it's not just the hip. It's both ankles had surgery in the last three years. You know, he did break a finger. His knee was bothering him at times before this hip injury. So he has been plagued with injuries. But I think in today's game where you don't have to commit $50 and $60 million to a first round NFL quarterback pick, it's worth it. So I think from that standpoint, I'd say, you know what, even if we get a healthy quarterback, it's going to be a 50% proposition. I mean, look at the quarterback who went one and two with James Swinton and Marcus Mariotta.
Starting point is 00:36:09 Those guys didn't have any injury concerns, and neither one of them are with their same teams anymore. So what if there's risk for an injury? take your swing at him, and if he hits, you're going to have a massive home run. And if you miss, it's not that much different than if you had somebody who was healthy and just didn't pan out. Yeah, Danny Connell is joining us. You know, it's funny about this. You and I have opinions. And I don't expect people to always agree with my opinions, but I'm paid to give them.
Starting point is 00:36:36 But there are times I give an opinion and I get pushback and I think, are you people crazy? So I'm supposed to believe Bill Belichick, the smartest guy in football who's manipulated players, referees, the league, coaches, everybody. He doesn't have a plan. So he lets the kicker go now, who still has legs in him. He lets his two best linebackers go, even though he loves linebackers. He doesn't go after a Bridgewater and Andy Dalton, although they're obviously better than what he has. And he's got 12 draft picks. He's going to get three compensatory draft picks next year for Brady, Collins, and Van Newe, right?
Starting point is 00:37:07 So my theory on this with Belichick, it's not tanking. You can still maintain your cultural integrity. That's what last year, Miami really built a nice culture without winning a bunch of games. So next year, I think he's going to move a lot of his picks in this draft to next year. He's going to have his normal picks, his compensatory picks, and next year in the draft, he's going to have 12 or 13 picks. He's going to play these quarterbacks. They're going to be below 500, but competitive.
Starting point is 00:37:32 They'll be 7 and 9, 6 and 10. They'll end up with the 8th or 9th draft pick, and he's going to call the first or second team that doesn't need it, like if the Bengals are bad with Joe Burrow and say, I'll give you nine picks. Can I have that pick? I think he's got a complete plan, which is. get rid of some guys, a kicker, a quarterback's, not that he got rid of Brady. It's not that he's tanking. He is maintaining integrity, but he's trying to bundle all.
Starting point is 00:37:59 He's got 12 picks this year. He's trying to bundle him for next year with the ability to give a team eight to 10 picks to get a top two pick. Am I nuts? I don't think you're crazy. I don't. When I look at the Patriots, look, they've historically been very patient. They've historically never overpaid for players.
Starting point is 00:38:17 They've been cheap, and I think that's what you're seeing in this offseason. It's no different. I don't read too much into cutting a kicker. What I do read into is if they waltz out, you know, week one, and it's Jared Sidham or Brian Hoyer or Cody Kessler as their quarterback, then I'm saying there is no way this team is planning on making the playoffs or contending this year. This is the play for the quarterback next year. There are going to be some players that will be out there that will be available. And even if you're not three and 13 or, you know, the worst team in the NFL, at least you'll be in a position where you won't have to move up that far. Maybe you're competing with the Jacksonville Jaguar.
Starting point is 00:38:58 So, you know, who knows how Gardner Minshu is going to be and they're not going to be that good. But other teams that might be in that running are all going to have the quarterback position pretty much short up. Yeah, I do think if they go for Trevor Lawrence, there will be competition. But think of the value that the Patriots should recognize from having. stability at the quarterback position for 20 years. That is something no other team has had the way they've had. And it's no coincidence. That's why they've been so successful. So I do think the only thing that I would say comes into play is what part does ego play? How much ego would build Belichick to have to swallow to possibly have a worse season than Tom Brady would have with
Starting point is 00:39:39 the Tampa Bay buck? But that's the only hang up that I would have enough. And I think, again, it goes back to the patience and long-term plan. And think about the areas where Bill Belichick has been ahead of the curve, using analytics, having, you know, scouting, advanced scouts, advanced analytics, being ahead of the curve, I think this would be one more area where he would have the foresight say, you know what, we can endure a season. We almost have an excuse. It's no more Brady.
Starting point is 00:40:07 We don't have that many weapons. And I still think they'll be competitive enough where it doesn't look like an outright tank. and then they'll still be in a position where teams will want to move off some of those spots because their quarterbacks will already be in place. Yeah, and remember this. Bill knows he's going to be in competition next year. But if he walks into the draft with 15 picks, he's the only guy that can give up 10. So if I'm Cincinnati and I'm bad and have the number one pick with Burrow,
Starting point is 00:40:34 it doesn't matter if I hate Belichick. If everybody else can offer six and he can offer 10, you're taking New England's offer. So I think Bill's going to load up next year. year's draft with, I mean, this year they've got 12. I think he's going to move several to next year. And then the compensatory picks for Brady, Collins, and Van Nuoy. Bill knows it is a race to get Justin Fields or Trevor. He's going to have the most ammo.
Starting point is 00:40:57 He's going to have 15 picks. And let's be honest, if you get Trevor Lawrence, you don't need the other 14. Because you're not paying Trevor, by the way, because you can go into the free agent market because you won't be paying your quarterback anything. I don't know. I think it's obvious. Either Bill's an idiot. or he's got a plan, I think I know which side I would take, given those two options.
Starting point is 00:41:18 Danny Cannell, by the way, love to have him on. Stick around, by the way, over the next month, because we're going to have you on as much as we possibly can, Danny, before the draft. Thank you. I love it, Colin. Great catching up. All right. Coming up next, why you've got to be careful watching some of these mock drafts.
Starting point is 00:41:36 I saw one this morning from a very reputable guy, probably the biggest name in the business who does it. But you got to remember, there's a little secret behind this mock draft. We'll tell you what it is that's coming up next. Live in Los Angeles, on all our platforms, it's The Herd. And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Starting point is 00:44:29 Hey, I'm Jared Adano. You might know me as that loud guy who yells out, help on the internet. Help! Somebody! Please! But there's so much more to me than me. I'm an actor. I'm a comedian, and recently I've become quite the helper myself.

Reviews, discovery, pricing, everything you need, new car, use car, go to True Car. Good to have you in today. Howie Long, top of the next hour. You know, I've said this before. You can either glass half full, glass half empty. We're going to get through this. It's unique. Social distancing is key and vital. My family outside of occasional walks around the neighborhood, we're locked up. And I am a believer that we do need to have our demand.
Starting point is 00:46:09 domestic aviation closed down for a week or two. We're going to get through this and we're going to come out of it firing. A baseball, by the way, cross your fingers on the baseball season. If baseball is the first sport to come back, they're going to have the best regular season ratings. They have had in 20 years. We are, give me a Mariners game. I'm dying for baseball. So baseball will come back.
Starting point is 00:46:32 I do believe NBA, I'm not so sure. But I think if baseball comes back, it's going to be, we're just, we just want. sports. We're going to get through this. A stock market I saw a rally today, that's going to be a roller coaster for the next month. You're going to have to deal with it. We're going to have cases skyrocketing. But the ingenuity of corporate America. Listen, I trust the American people. I don't trust politicians. Boy, you see a real separation of the haves and have-nots politically, and I'll just leave
Starting point is 00:46:58 it at that. There's a lot of people that are just buffoons. But I trust the American people. I trust a lot of guys, the Elon Musk's in our world, and we'll get through it. say this. I like Mel Kuiper. I know Mel Kuiper. I've parted with Mel Kiper. He's not really a partyer. But he has a mock draft. It's brilliant. I agree with all of it. If there were no trades. And ESPN, ever protective and ever controlling, will not allow its people in mock drafts to have trades. Ridiculous. There's going to be trades. Do you think the L.A. Chargers are just going to sit back moving into a new stadium and hope two falls to us.
Starting point is 00:47:43 That's not going to happen. You think the Miami Dolphins, if the Chargers make a move, are just going to sit there and go, well, they win. We're not going to move. Ten of the last 15 first round quarterbacks, teams have moved up to get them. ESPN ever controlling doesn't allow, you know, it's so nice to work at Fox. I'm not told what to say. I'm not told what I can do.
Starting point is 00:48:05 I can do any mock draft, any trade. The eye and Mel's draft is great. I agree with all of the first 10 picks. If there were no trades, you're going to have trades. You'd think the Chargers, moving into a new stadium without a quarterback, are just going to cross their fingers and hope Justin Herbert falls to them? They've got three cornerbacks outside of Baltimore. Nobody in the league does.
Starting point is 00:48:27 They got multiple picks and they don't need their draft picks. What they need is a quarterback. They can give up every pick for a quarterback, and I'd be like, boom, good draft. Go home. Thanks for flying United. So you got teams like the Chargers with good rosters, multiple corners, really good players everywhere. They need a quarterback. They're moving up.
Starting point is 00:48:45 And also Detroit and the Giants are not very good football teams. Detroit's awful. The Giants, I think will be bad because, you know, the OTAs will get canceled, limited camps, rookie head coach, young quarterback, new system. I think the Giants are going to really struggle. All teams with new coaches because of this virus, a bridge door limited camps are going to struggle. Cleveland, I think, has talent, can struggle. You know, Matt Rule, good as he is, can't implement in his system, you know, could struggle.
Starting point is 00:49:13 But Detroit and the New York Giants, literally, if they're not willing to move, if the Detroit Lions with a third pick don't make a deal and don't trade down, then I honestly, they don't know what they're doing. You very rarely get into a situation where you like your quarterback, your top five or six in the draft, and multiple people need a quarterback, and there's two or three good ones. out there. So nothing against Mel, great mock draft, but ESPN doesn't allow their dudes to do any trades. I think they think it's too confusing. You're going to have trades. Just guarantee it. You're going to have trades because you have two teams. The LA Chargers in Miami are not going to sit idly by a hope they get their guy. And in the Chargers case, they have a very unique situation. They don't need a bunch of draft picks. They just need a quarterback. They've got two receivers I like, two backs, solved left tackle and guard, two pass rushers.
Starting point is 00:50:11 They got their safety, three good corners. So they got personnel they could trade, draft picks they have, and they don't need a bunch of draft picks. So love you, Mel, but I can't read a mock draft that won't do trades. That's why this year, as I'm watching mock drafts, you know, it's kind of like some people who I really like, I know they're limited and they can't do things. But Detroit and New York, if you're a general manager, you know, Bob Quinn in Detroit, doesn't move down because they need multiple people.
Starting point is 00:50:39 I'll tell you what, if I was Detroit, what I would do, I'd call the Chargers. I'd say you could have my pick. Give me one, give me your second best corner. Give me two or three picks and you can have it in a heartbeat. In a heartbeat if I was the Lions. Howie longs around the corner. Tom Brady spoke in Tampa. I'll let you hear that.

Starting point is 00:55:25 Technology is an amazing thing. And Joy Taylor is joining us today from the beautiful confines of her smartly appointed condo, it looks like. How are you, Joy? I'm doing good. Just hanging out. Social distancing. Staying home. Same.
Starting point is 00:55:40 Same here, folks. social. Being a rule follower. Yeah. No, no. I'm, you know, my wife's not a rule follower, but she's been following this week. And listen, just keep your distance, wash your hands. You know, just my daughter and I is, she, my daughter is a great hangout companion. She's doing Instagram shows and I'm sitting there watching, you know, TV shows and old games and having a great time. Howie Longo joined us in just a couple of minutes. So Tom Brady held a, is it a teleconference? He didn't actually hold a, a press conference, a teleconference today, and Tom ever the politician,
Starting point is 00:56:15 he did talk about, you know, why he chose the historically below average buccaneers. There are a lot of things that really were, you know, intriguing to me about the organization and, you know, the players and the coaches and, you know, the willingness of everyone to try to, you know, accomplish what the goal of playing football is, which is the win. You know, I'm going to try to do everything I can in my position and what I'm responsible. for it to make that happen. And, you know, I've got to trust that everyone else is doing the exact same thing. So, in that part, it's no different from, you know, what I've experienced, you know, for 20 years in my own role. Yeah, now I've said, I do believe Tom will be productive. This is a team that
Starting point is 00:56:56 had 35 turnovers at the quarterback position. If they could cut that to 16, they'll just win more games. Most of their good players are young players who are getting better, and it'll be a second year in Bruce Arian system. But they've got bad special teams historically. They were were lousy last year and you cross your fingers on injuries. But I just think if Tom reduces the number of turnovers by half, which, I mean, Tom Brady in the last four years has had 29 picks, James Winston had 30 last year. So if Tom has 12, 13 picks, one or two fumbles, I think they just win more games based on efficiency.
Starting point is 00:57:30 Brady also talked about, you know, driving over to Robert Kraft's house and breaking the news on why he was leaving New England. If I spoke by and spoke with Mr. Kraft and asked I come over and see him. And we spoke and we had a great conversation, you know, and I just wanted to express, you know, what he's meant to me in my life. And we spoke with Coach Belichick at the same time. We were at different locations. We talked to him and it was a great conversation. I got to tell you something.
Starting point is 00:58:01 This is obviously not analogous to Tom Brady, right? He's a legend. But three times in my life, I've gotten into a car, Joy, knowing I'm. driving, including ESPN, and twice locally, I'm driving to a company. They think I'm staying, I'm going, and it's not nerve-wracking. It's incredibly empowering. You feel great about it because you've made a decision and nobody's going to change your mind. And Brady, I looked up on a website how far Brady lives from Kraft. It's right around the corner. He could have walked to his house. So I'm sure it was an emotional decision, but I've done it three times in the way. I've done it three times
Starting point is 00:58:40 in my life where I know I'm going to say it's out of here and you know you have a feeling. You're just waiting, you know, for a word or a line or something. And it's empowering. It's not depressing because you kind of made up your mind and you may give them one more shot, but you've made up your mind. And so I thought to myself, oh, my God, what would that be like? Belichick's on the phone. You're sitting talking to Kraft.
Starting point is 00:59:01 And it's probably emotional, but it's probably a massive relief because you've been sitting with that. In all the many instances, I'm sitting with that. thing for like two months. It's on my shoulders. But once you're driving there, the decisions made, it's just this massive relief off your shoulders that you're going to say, hey, I love you guys. I love you, but I got to go. And I think Brady probably took from according to this bite is, hey, man, I wouldn't be here without you. I love you guys. You're awesome. Nobody will ever take any of it away. I just want to try something new. It's empowering. Howie Long's joining us, the Hall of Famer,
Starting point is 00:59:38 who only played for the Raiders. You know, it is interesting. Brady talks about his, he's sitting next to Kraft. He's got Belichick on the phone. Have you ever had one of those meetings where you've got to tell somebody you love or care about? I got to go. Maybe it wasn't with the Raiders, but have you ever had one of those, you know, those moments in your life, Howie? The only one, and first, you know, you guys are great for being on.
Starting point is 01:00:05 And I think we all, in these really challenging times, you know, if you just stare at the news 24-7, you'll just go crazy. And, you know, you offering kind of an opportunity for people to escape. You guys are doing a great job. You enjoy her to be commended. The only conversation that I had like that was I had decided to retire in 93. and went to the Pro Bowl and didn't tell anyone in the organization and just retired at the Super Bowl. And that was when I met David Hill. And really, I didn't have a plan other than we were selling our house in California,
Starting point is 01:00:52 and wanted to raise the boys somewhere where we thought was a good place to raise the boys. And we ended up in Charlottesville. and Al was, you know, was not happy. And, you know, it was difficult because art was my head coach, Art Shell. Yeah. And I had played with Art. And Art really kind of brought me up. Art Shell and Gene Upshaw and guys like that brought me up.
Starting point is 01:01:19 Wow. Great guys. So I didn't want to let art down. And one was the direction of the team. Two, there were some other things that, you know, I'd rather not share. But I just, you know, it was time for me to move in another direction. I'd had eight or nine surgeries at that time. And I thought, you know, I went to the Pro Bowl.
Starting point is 01:01:40 Let's call it quits on a high note. I don't know that we're headed in the right direction. And Diane and I had to go in and sit down with Al and have that conversation, and it was not a good conversation. Yeah. I mean, but when you left, you start your new... Oh, it was a... You know what?
Starting point is 01:01:56 It was a weight. You know, I tended to be... be manic about, you know, the preparation and playing. And it was all about football and, you know, it was 24-7 and I could never shut it off. And if I got hooked once or twice in a game, I'd stay up all night, Sunday night, and just relive the play in my head. It was, I think I heard you mention when I was on hold, you know, when you decided to make the move, it's difficult, and then you finally make the move, and it's a relief, and you're headed in another day. direction. I was very fortunate that when I made that move, it was a weight off my shoulders. And,
Starting point is 01:02:36 you know, you don't have to be the baddest guy in the world anymore. You could just be, you know, the dad of three sons and who's headed in another direction. And, you know, the money wasn't, you know, as anywhere near as good as it is now. To put it in perspective, in 1981, when I was a rookie out of Villanova, out in Oakland, my check was 1,000. My check was $1,007 after taxes. I drove a used Kuptuville with spoke wheels, the lower interior,
Starting point is 01:03:08 8-track cassette decks. Sweet. The big 8-track, you know, the big one. And I was rolling hard in Oakland. You know, I mean, but you know, $1,07 for a kid from the neighborhood I came from was a bunch of money. But, you know, fast forward to
Starting point is 01:03:25 13 years later. And you know, listen, the Raiders, after me, I couldn't imagine playing for another team. It was them or nobody, never entered into my mind. And the ironic thing was he, fast forward five years. When I go into the Hall of Fame, he calls me up in Hawaii and offers me a two-year deal, and I'm 39, 40 years old. And he said, I know you're working out.
Starting point is 01:03:58 I know you're in great shape. And I was playing basketball at the University of Virginia at that time when I could still, you know, do all that stuff. And I said, how the hell does he know I'm in great shape? Does he have somebody in the building? You know, Al was, you know, I saw things that you, you know, and I'll never share most of it, but, you know, it was the most unique organization you could possibly play for.
Starting point is 01:04:24 Yeah, it was almost a small business in a big business world. They did things a little different. Well, you go from Villanova where there's a priest on every floor to the Oakland Raider locker room. And guys are smoking Salem lights. Wow. Yeah, culture shock. Hall of Famer Howie Long. It is interesting about the best teams in college or pro football generally have very strong cultures.
Starting point is 01:04:49 How difficult, maybe because the Buccaneers have lost so much. Do you think Tom can have a seismic? change? Can he change the culture of Tampa in the year? Well, how many pick sixes did, you know, and listen, James is an extraordinary talent, and I am hopeful that he will go someplace, and someone will kind of find the cheat code on, you know, don't make this throw off balance,
Starting point is 01:05:24 high to whoever. from the other team. Their defense, for example, if you just don't turn the football over with a score or turn the football over in your own territory on a regular basis, that defense was pretty good at the end of the year. It was. By the way, Washington's defensive line, if they get Chase Young with Ron Rivera, you know, if I'm Washington, I could bring him up.
Starting point is 01:05:54 I've got all sorts of room. you know, I mean, if I don't think Dwayne Haskins, I think Washington for, you know, I mean, I guess the point is Tampa's not that far off. I don't think they are. Oh, hey, listen, listen, they're loaded. Evans is, and, you know, when you play in Tampa or, you know, fill in the blank city,
Starting point is 01:06:17 it was like when Chris was playing in St. Louis, you can have 42 sacks in four years. If a tree falls in the woods and there's nobody there to hear it, does it make a sound? Right. that's the Tampa effect. Yeah. And now everything has changed.
Starting point is 01:06:33 And they're loaded. And you've got a coordinator that can relate to Tom on a different level, and you've got a head coach who not only can relate to Tom, you know, not the bill, you know, it's two different conversations. Bill definitively appreciated Tom and what he did. that Bill is as brilliant as Bill is, and he is brilliant. There's Bill and there's everybody else. And I'd say Pete Carroll's probably, in my mind, second there.
Starting point is 01:07:10 He is incapable of changing his approach to coaching players. This is how we do it. This is the formula. And, you know, it's kind of a transient team. you go back and look and I and I pulled this up I remember one year we had them in the Super Bowl and I pulled it up and I thought to myself I remember we did their first Super Bowl game and I thought there's no way on God's Green Earth that they could beat the St. Louis Rams. I looked at every film there was to look. Terry and I looked and we just couldn't see a way
Starting point is 01:07:46 that they could beat them and hubris ended up being the downfall of the Rams not running the football and they win that game if they do. but they're a transient team because of the way they're built. They're fiscally sound. They don't make wild free agent moves. They take care of their own when it's the right time. They move on, for the most part, 95% of the time at the right time. And it's such a versatile scheme, both offensively and defensively.
Starting point is 01:08:23 It changes year to year. It changes month to month. It changes week to week, half to half, quarter to quarter. You have to be great at coaching. You have to have smart players. And it's the old, I can be you, you can be me. We're all interchangeable. In other words, the right guard can be the left tackle.
Starting point is 01:08:40 The center can be the right guard. The defensive end can be the outside linebacker. We're all interchangeable. Therefore, we're all expendable. With the exception of Tom, for the most part, and maybe a gronk. and, you know, the slot receiver has been, you know, we've seen many iterations of that throughout the course of the 20 years that Tom's been there. But you count the number of offensive linemen Tom's played with.
Starting point is 01:09:07 You count the number of tight ends. You count the number of wide receivers. You count the number of running backs. The numbers are staggering. And he just keeps doing it. That's where I think he goes to. He just keeps doing it. And they keep coaching it.
Starting point is 01:09:19 Yeah. Now, that's important. It is because Tampa's going to be new people. and I think he's going to figure that. I don't think new people bothers Tom. I think he's going to be productive. Tom has, like Bill, and this is the ironic part, like Bill, Tom has a standard of preparation
Starting point is 01:09:40 that everyone around him has to raise up to that level. And I think that permeates through your team, not just on offense, but on defense. And maybe in special teams, where, you know, that's one thing that New England always kind of stayed up on, you know. Bill has his fingers on every position on that football team. Having had a son that played there, I always wondered what it was like there. You know, I thought I knew what it was like, but, you know, having Chris there and they won a Super Bowl and...
Starting point is 01:10:13 What do you say? He just said, you know, it's tough. You know, you're... It is a selfless system. It's not about you. It's about the system and it's about winning. And you could be playing out of position or in a scheme that doesn't necessarily lend to you being the best player you can be.
Starting point is 01:10:38 And nobody cares because it's not about you. It's about us. It's about the team. And that can really wear on players. sure over a period of time and and really when you think about it it's shocking that it lasted 20 years oh absolutely of course of course it is and and you know it's it's people say it's a shocking shocking move by tom brady it's the most talked about move i've ever heard of for two years now it's been that way it's it's kind of like people guessing when tom will fall off the cliff if you just guess enough You're going to be right at one point because he's 43 years old. Of course you're going to be right. Now it will be the time.
Starting point is 01:11:23 It's a stock to sell. Yeah. But he's going to, I hope he really does a great job down there. I hope they raise their level as a team. And I hope he enjoys it because he deserves it. He really does. Yeah. By the way, I love Travis Frederick retiring today because I am a big believer.
Starting point is 01:11:45 I want my great players to go to a podium or a speaking. engagement and I want the imagery to be, I say, I use, use it as an example. I want them walking up, looking good, barrel-chested, happy, funny, smart. I don't want guys hobbling up to a dais or a podium at the Hall of Fame. I love the idea that players get paid enough now that they can, they can retire at 29 years old. Calvin Johnson, uh, doesn't Luke Keeckley, I, I, I look at Travis Frederick retirement and I'm like, this is good for football. I want my guys out at 29. Here's the thing about most players that have played at a high level. Mediocrity is not something that, you know, you could be, you could continue to play and be good, but not great.
Starting point is 01:12:33 Yeah. Not a, you know, let's say you weren't a pro bowl player anymore and you're, you know, pro bowl, whatever the, whatever your kind of standard is. Right. That's difficult to handle. Yeah. I couldn't handle being great. because it just it drove me crazy. I didn't enjoy football or my career until I was done.
Starting point is 01:12:56 Yeah. And then I had the opportunity to look back on it with perspective and distance. I've talked to golf pros who have said that. They're like, I, it's like, I'll enjoy this when I've retired. I'm teaching now. I don't have, I don't get a play as much. No, I get it. Like I, we say this all the time.
Starting point is 01:13:11 It's people are like, oh, you have a great job. And I'm like, it's work. I enjoy the work. But it's not, I don't go there every day saying, it's just going to be fun. We got a show to do. Joy and I've got to fill three hours a day, and we've got no games. So it's, you know. Yeah, I've apologized.
Starting point is 01:13:26 I know how much you prepare, you know, and to do the kind of show that you do is really amazing. Every day you've got to show up and you've got to be informed and you've got to be on top of things and you've got to find ways to, you know, pique the interest of your audience in multiple sports and genres and topics. and all that. It really is. I've apologized to my kids.
Starting point is 01:13:54 Oh, really? For, you know, when I was a player. Because I was just, I was so obsessed with it. Yeah. You know, it's nice to just be able to be a dad and coach Little League Baseball for eight years and coach high school football for eight years. And having had the opportunity to do that was really special.
Starting point is 01:14:15 Yeah. And you are a great dad. It's just, you know, listen, you know, it's, plus we're all different. You're 20, you're 30, you came from, you didn't have a ton, and you're making it finally. And now, look at your life. It's a series of commercials and free haircuts. It ought to be illegal. No, really, it should be.
Starting point is 01:14:35 It's embarrassing. And, you know, when you call home, you know, you can't tell Uncle Billy. Hey, Uncle Billy, I bought a, you know, whatever. a watch that's expensive or added a guest house on. Yeah. It's too much. Uncle Billy can't comprehend that. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:14:55 Good talking to you, buddy. Howie Long, Hall of Famer. Love talking to you. Joy and Colin, take care. Be safe and be well. Thank you, Howie Long. Yeah, listen, it's funny about that, Joy. We love our jobs.
Starting point is 01:15:08 But like anybody listening to us, it doesn't matter what you do, you can be an insurance broker, a landscaper. It's a job. Of course. would be way more fun. Mark Slareth gets to plan his, he loves his yard. So Mark Schlarath can plan his garden all day. And he says, oh, I have so much fun. But if you paid him to do it and he had a time limit and he had to do the next door neighbor's yard after his, it's not as much fun. That's why you have to love the process of what you do. Because, you know, the minute you get paid and you have
Starting point is 01:15:35 responsibilities, so how long, it's a job. And he was great at it. But when you stop and you're like, oh, now I've got to coach my kids, this is way more fun. And so, yeah, I mean, a job can be fun and you can enjoy it, but it's still a job. Right. So it's not, you know, like when you're a kid, you're like, oh, I want to be an astronaut. Like, great, like, so you can go to space. But there's also like a process that gets you to being an astronaut. That's, you got to be a scientist first.
Starting point is 01:16:00 Right. That's why you better, you have to enjoy the process of it or it'll just, it doesn't matter how much of money you make in life. If you don't enjoy the, Philip Rivers said that. He goes, I love practice. He goes, I like practice more than the games. Brady clearly likes the process of a game plan. Drew Breeze loves building the architecture of building it.
Starting point is 01:16:18 If you didn't, you just wouldn't last. It's all jobs, you know, Kobe Bryant. He loved practice. LeBron James loves it. So, I mean, can think about these NBA guys now. They're just, they want to get back so you're just taking away the joy. If you're the world's best at something and I take it from you, I can't even practice. Oh, my, I feel so bad for these NBA guys.
Starting point is 01:16:44 the world's best, it'd be like being the world's best singer with laryngitis. You couldn't sing. I mean, it was just, LeBron James is sitting there. I can't, I can't practice. It's like, incredibly frustrating. Oh, my Lord. All right. We got Matt Mosey's around the corner.

Here is Joey Taylor with the news.
Starting point is 01:20:54 This is the herd line news. So last Monday, Stefan Diggs tweeted it's time for a new beginning. Yeah. And seeing that he was about to be traded. Well, according to Albert Breer, the tweet actually got teams to start making calls about Diggs. The bills ended up getting the deal done, sending a first, fifth, and sixth. round pick to this year, this year and a fourth rounder next year to Minnesota for Diggs and the seventh rounder. But Breer also said that the Patriots were initially interested in trading for
Starting point is 01:21:27 digs, but they backed off after franchise tagging Joe Tune and learning that Brady would most likely be leaving. So Twitter had a little power. Yeah, no. Towards a little movement in Diggs straight. Yeah, I mean, Stefan's been one of those guys. It's, uh, he'll leave, it let his emotions go on Twitter and, uh, listen, we all know Twitter has all sorts of information. Some of it nonsense. But if a star player uses it smartly, it opens doors. Which is, it was very obvious that he was clearly, really unhappy there. And there was all of these little breadcrumbs, mostly on social media.
Starting point is 01:22:06 You know, he deleted all of his biking stuff. And then he had the picture that came out and he's like an Arizona cardinal shirt. and he said it was his cousins or his brothers or whatever. But he clearly forced his hand there. And look, I'm excited for what is going to happen with him and the bills. Like I think that him and Josh Allen are going to have an incredible season. And the bills are in the best position right now in the AFCs. Yeah, I really like their front office.
Starting point is 01:22:35 I think Josh Allen is being elevated by his staff. I don't think he's, I think Josh Allen has a long way to go. But he's a little bit of a wild. Colt. You know what I mean? But I will say this about Buffalo. They now have a system. They play very good defense.
Starting point is 01:22:50 They've developed a culture. They've been a playoff team. I know everybody thinks New England's winning this division. I think Buffalo is clearly, if you consider GM down right now, they got more good pieces. I think it's that simple. Who thinks that New England's winning this division? Oh, like, I saw Vegas numbers and it's like people think New England's going to win the division. I'm like, whoa.
Starting point is 01:23:11 Huh? What? They're not as good defensively. They just let go with their kicker. They are a massive downgraded quarterback. They're still bottom three in the league weapons. Like I think I don't, if you look at Buffalo's direction quarterback, high-end players, if I said Buffalo, New England, top 10 players right now today,
Starting point is 01:23:31 I think Buffalo is probably got seven of the 10 best players. Stefan Gilmore for New England is the one, Thunee, maybe the offensive lineman. But New England doesn't have a lot of star players left. I don't want to sound outrageous here, but the bills are clearly winning the division. Sam Darnold had mono last year. Let's not forget, they're going to be a lot better,
Starting point is 01:23:51 and the dolphins are likely going to have Tua or Herbert and just spent a ton of money in free agency and still have a bazillion picks in the draft. New England might be the worst in the division. Listen, New England's last nine games, they were four and five. Miami's last nine games, they were five and four. And they're going to have seven new starters from the draft. New England is not winning the A's.
Starting point is 01:24:10 They're not. So with Tom Brady gone, Jared Stidham will have a chance to compete with Brian Hoyer to be the Patriots starting quarterback. And on the McCordy Twins podcast, double coverage, Devin McCordy says he has total confidence in Stidham if he gets the job. I love this poise. Stiddy out there, like I would be faking a blitz sometimes
Starting point is 01:24:29 and we make eye contact and he just starts smiling and laughing. To me, there was weeks where, like, he was just on point. And those were some of our best weeks as a defense, mainly because Stitty aid us up in practice leading up to the game. and I think put more pressure on us. So I really admire just how hard he works. I've gotten to know him off the field as well. He's a really good guy.
Starting point is 01:24:48 Young guy, but very mature. He's married, does all the good things. So, you know, I think the Stidams are going to be in New England for a long time. All right. That's a great, great vote of confidence. Yes. Look, none of us know what Jared Stidham is. None of us.
Starting point is 01:25:02 No one. Right, right. He's played in three games, completed two or four passes for 14 yards and an interception. Yeah. We have no idea what he is. Yeah. But I'm still pretty. sure that New England is not winning the AFCs.
Starting point is 01:25:12 Let me tell you what he's not. The best quarterback in the division. No. And that's generally who wins the divisions. And he's not Tom Brady. Right. But look, like, I'm willing to see what he does this year. The other option is Brian Hoyer.
Starting point is 01:25:27 I mean, I think we know what that is. So, again, like, they've made it pretty clear. They're not going to pursue a quarterback this year. I'm with you. If you said this morning, who do I like? I'd say Buffalo wins the division at 10 and 6. Jets, Miami are in the 9 and 7, 8, and 8, New England, 6, and 10.
Starting point is 01:25:43 And I don't feel that's outrageous at all. They have the worst quarterback probably in the division after somebody gets Tua. I mean, honestly, it's like Darnal, Josh Allen, Tua, and Jared Stidham. Am I nuts? No, I feel like it's incredibly obvious. Yes, of course it is.
Starting point is 01:25:59 I don't even think it's an argument. Right. So James Winston is looking for a new team, now that the bucks have signed Tom Brady. And one person who hopes James gets another chance is Tony Dungey. Yeah. And he made a very interesting comparison.
Starting point is 01:26:11 He compared James' first five seasons to the start of Peyton Manning's career. Yeah. You look at James's numbers and Peyton Manning's numbers in those first five years. There's not a lot of difference other than Peyton's team won more. Peyton had a lot of interceptions. He had a lot of things that he overcame, but his second five years were tremendous. And I think James, you know, maybe could have done that. The other thing Peyton had was he had to benefit of being.
Starting point is 01:26:39 in the same system, same offensive coordinator for five years. And James didn't have that. So there's a lot of things you could say. I think the young man is talented. We'll see what happens. He is talented. I will say this. I would have no problem bringing James on to compete with DeWain Haskins like.
Starting point is 01:26:55 I think that's fascinating. That works for me. Because I will say this. Marcus Moriota is just not, he's just not productive enough. James is productive. That's not the issue. It's judgment and picks. It's a little Baker,
Starting point is 01:27:09 Mayfield. Baker can be productive. Too many bad decisions. You know, there are certain guys that, like, to me, they're just low ceiling guys. James's ceiling is still high. It's just that can he, not just kind of, massively cut down on bad decisions. I mean, if you look at their numbers, they are very, very similar. In fact, Peyton had 100 interceptions to James's 88. But if you're, if you're looking at Peyton Manning's career, his poise, his development, it just felt, it feels different than James. And the other thing, like if you're comparing eras, we're very, we're way more impatient with quarterbacks now. There's almost a surplus of quarterbacks and the talent that's coming out of college football and the turnover and the free agency movement that
Starting point is 01:27:57 we've seen this year. You just don't have the patience that we have with quarterbacks in the past. You got to, you got to pop within your first five years and you got to pop on both ends. Oh, yeah. You can, we'll be very forgiving of interceptions and turnovers and things like that within your first two years. But by your third year, if you don't have it together, listen, if Baker Mayfield struggles with this new staff, eight, nine games in, they've made a decision in the room. It's over. Seriously, if he struggles through eight games, makes bad decisions, Stefanski's going to the owner saying, I didn't draft him, I'm moving on. And maybe that's unfair because look at the turnover that Baker's had.
Starting point is 01:28:32 Oh, it is, but that's life. Yeah. To your point, people forget how bad Eli was for the first several years. Eli was not good. He was unathletic and a lot of picks and wasn't winning. Joy with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by.
Starting point is 01:28:47 The Hurd-Ly News. Well, the Cowboys lost their Pro Bowl Hall of Fame level center. What to do with Dak now? Because they're not the same team when Travis Frederick over the last couple of years hasn't played. They don't protect the quarterback. They don't run the football. The always funny Matt Mosley, Dallas Morning News columnist will be joining us next. sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon eastern 9 a.m. Pacific.

Starting point is 01:32:31 Listen to Help from Hypocrite as part of the Mike Cultura Podcast Network available on the IHartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome back. Matt Mosley's makes me laugh. Dallas Morning News columnist, Doomsday Podcast. Cowboys just lost a guy I would vote for for the Hall of Fame, Travis Frederick, his career. I think we're going to have to reevaluate Hall of Fame. Players will come, you know, they're going to retire earlier. I don't need 15 years from you. Give me seven, eight great years. And Matt is joining us now. I mean, first of all, what was your initial reaction to the retirement of a tremendous cowboy? You know, I was, you know, usually you're kind of prepared for crazy news with the Cowboys because we had so much opportunity over the years, Colin, but this would call me off guard.
Starting point is 01:33:19 And the Cowboys can act all they want. Oh, we knew this was coming. Now, I had Scouts telling me throughout last year, he is not the same guy. He is not close to the same guy. Now, he went to the Pro Bowl that might tell you what the Pro Bowl should say about people. But it was my reaction was I just very, very kind of sad for him because I know how much he loves it. I know how much he needs his teammates. But at the same time also, you know, I think we've moved into an era where guys, I think years ago you just play through it.
Starting point is 01:33:53 You do everything in your, you can, in your power to make it through your career. and at least get, you know, 10, 11, 12 years, and if you could, and he might have been able to. But at some point, if you don't feel yourself, and we've seen it with Keekely, we saw it with luck, and now we've seen it with Frederick. Guys are leaving the game. And I think it's scary for the NFL, but, you know, who are we to hold this against them when they make the best decision for their, you know, long-term health and their families, you know, I feel good for him in that respect.
Starting point is 01:34:27 Randall Cobb's gone, Robert Quinn's gone, Byron Jones is gone, Travis Frederick's gone. Matt, those are good players. This team, those are good, good productive players. Yeah, this is a little bit worrisome. I mean, the Cowboys are sort of good at defensive players getting these one-year deals. They're not good at keeping those players. And then, of course, they're the best cornerback, much maligned around here for never getting interceptions. you look at it, he was always, you know, they didn't throw at it.
Starting point is 01:35:00 And they didn't complete balls on that side of the field. So you got to give him that. That's why you got a, you know, a huge deal in free agency. So I think there is some major worry. This is a splash and dash type team type franchise. They put all the money in skill positions. And they still don't even have their quarterback deal done. And they don't even know how to do these trade.
Starting point is 01:35:21 They did the, you know, first round pick. What you do, what we see other teams do is you get. the extension done immediately when you make the trade. We see it over and over, and this team doesn't know how to do that. They always want to put it off. Hey, we can do this down the road. And then, of course, they're in a position where the only way they keep Amari Cooper is to give him a top of the line deal and make him nearly the highest paid receiver in
Starting point is 01:35:47 the game. I would say this is a scary time for Cowboys fans. I mean, everybody will convince themselves, oh, they got the Super Bowl talent. But they are really hurting on the defensive side of the ball. Jalen Smith regressed. We don't know what Van der Esch might do with this stenosis thing that he has. I mean, that's a scary injury to have. We'll see if he comes back from that.
Starting point is 01:36:10 But this is a, you know, they're fortunate they play in a horrible division because this Cowboys team is in a world of hurt right now. They desperately now need a corner and a center. I also think they need another, you know, I honestly think they have to address the offensive line more at center. They're getting old. If I said to you, Cowboys' first two picks, what do they address? What would be your guess? Well, they'll always tell you that they'll take the best player because what they've done is they've re-signed some cornerbacks.
Starting point is 01:36:43 They got Ha-ha Clinton Dicks in its safety. So they feel like they're in position to take the best player. I've looked at some of these top 50 list. I know you've been looking at a lot of film, Colin, and you know your best centers on the board. But there's no center that's up there in the top, you know, 20 or 25 that you can just go in and get that guy. I mean, there's somebody, I can't even remember. But, you know, there's some people out there.
Starting point is 01:37:07 Maybe he's from Michigan now that I think about it. But again, he's like number 37 on this. Yeah, Ruiz. Ruiz. Yeah, he'll go late first, early second. Yeah. Okay. Yeah, good in a phone booth.
Starting point is 01:37:18 Good, good leverage. love the man. But they'll see what they are able to do. I think they still will try to, you know, take the best player there. And that's why, boy, you hear all these, where I live in Dallas, lots of LSU
Starting point is 01:37:34 fans. I mean, they're everywhere. And they are just convinced that the Cowboys 17 will have to go with Chase on. We'll have to go with a pressure player. Obviously, they lost Robert Quinn. They got this highly paid defensive end that last year had like five and a half sacks of people
Starting point is 01:37:50 say, oh, he's great against the run. Who cares? Hey, it's about sacks. It's about getting the quarterback. And so I would look, everybody says, oh, what about safety? What about cornerback? Look at who they've picked in the past. They have not picked the safety in the first round of 2002. It's Roy Williams, who they picked. And that didn't turn out that great.
Starting point is 01:38:08 He was okay. He had a pretty good, you know, decent career. But I think you look at a pressure player. They're not going to pick a wide receiver because they got the Cooper thing done. I don't think they'll pick another offensive lineman. And I don't think there's anybody just grabbing their attention on the O-Ly. So I think you've got to start zeroing in on who can be a pass rusher. And this team used to be in love with Arkansas because Jerry ties to them.
Starting point is 01:38:32 Not a lot of great players coming out of Arkansas right now. There are some coming out of LSU. This team falls in love with schools. Maybe someday they'll fall in love with my alma mater, Baylor. But for now, it's LSU. Look at the Tigers, Colin. That's where that's the direction they're thinking. By the way, only a couple of minutes left.
Starting point is 01:38:49 We've got to make it quick, but no OTA potentially may because of the virus. I think it hurts new coaches, new systems. You know, the either, you know, McCarthy's not going to have his players potentially until August. A minute and a half left. We've got to make it pretty succinct here. How much does that hurt Dak and McCarthy? Oh, I think it really hurts. And I think they need to get to know each other.
Starting point is 01:39:14 They need to, you know, figure out, but they can look at film, but they need to kind of be around each other. The truth is, though, with his status right now on this franchise tag, he wasn't going to be around anyway. There was a chance he wasn't going to show up, and, you know, there are even rules in place. So in some weird sense, this protects them from this ongoing story. Oh, no DAC around. Oh, my gosh, Cooper Rush is out here taking rep. So maybe they will get something done by that July 15th deadline that they have to look to on this franchise tag. And then they'll get into camp.
Starting point is 01:39:46 And, of course, everybody's going to be so excited to have foot. again. If, in fact, that happens, then I think everything will be okay, but absolutely it hurts. I mean, I think it hurts in all sorts of areas right now with a new coach, new system, trying to get to know this play caller. By the way, they're going to let him call the plays. I don't understand it with Kellyn Moore. It doesn't make any sense to me, but he's going to call the play. So, yeah, it hurts them bad. Matt Mosley, Cowboy Insider, Call Host of the Doomsday Podcast with Edwarder. Good talking to you, buddy. Always good. Stay safe there, okay?
Starting point is 01:40:18 you too social distancing. Okay, so just think about this. They lost Travis Frederick, Pro Bowl Center. Byron Jones, their best corner. Robert Quinn, their sack leader. Randall Com, you know, a nice, had 800 yards. Didn't they lose his safety, Jeff Heath? Okay, Jeff Heath, who was hurt a lot, but when he played, he was valuable.
Starting point is 01:40:37 I don't think Dallas can be very good. I really don't. I think Philadelphia is going to be significantly healthier and significantly better. Yeah, I mean, Dallas is going to have to hit on every draft pick and have no injuries. And that offensive line, Tyron Smith left tackle is no longer a 16-game guy. That's not what he is anymore. Forget the 17th game.
Starting point is 01:40:59 He's about a 12-game guy. So, you know, this is, again, this is what the Rams did. Vanity contracts, a lot of skill players, a lot of money. Well, what happens when you have an injury or an early retirement? Rams, Cowboys, can't shake anymore, fist bump. You're looking at each other. You look like the same franchise. A lot of big names, no depth.
Starting point is 01:41:23 All it takes is a girly injury or a Travis Frederick retirement. And, uh-oh, it all comes crashing down. Michelin Endurance X-D Solicoed Wiper Blades. Real world proven. Get them at Walmart. Last two times as long. Michelin. Hour three next.
Starting point is 01:41:39 Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports Radio, FS1, and the IHeard Radio app. Oh, here we go. Hour number three. Joel Claddle stopped by in 15 minutes. This live in Los Angeles is the herd. Wherever you may be, and however, you may be listening. IHeart Radio, Fox Sports Radio, FS1, and Sirius XM Channel 83.
Starting point is 01:42:09 It is good to have you in today, a lot of different stories. And Joy Taylor is joining me. Joy, how are you? I'm doing good. You know, walking down. Locking down, you know, how long do you do it? I don't know. We have a health crisis, which is obviously going to become a massive economic crisis.
Starting point is 01:42:27 That's for politicians to decide. I do think we should lock down domestic travel for about two weeks. No, no, that's my opinion, but, you know, I'm not a politician. This is, as I said, from the very beginning two weeks ago, this is a spring summer story. It's not a three or four week story. My gut feeling this morning the NBA season will be canceled. Baseball will save it, but it won't look anything like it. couple of NFL things.
Starting point is 01:42:51 So Tom Brady this morning had his teleconference with the Tampa Bay Buccaneer media. And, you know, listen, I mean, Brady is not going to shovel any dirt on the Patriots. That's not his brand. That's not who he is. It was interesting. Robert Kraft said, I don't know if it was a tweet. I don't know where it came from. But Kraft said basically he would have loved to have worked something out.
Starting point is 01:43:15 But there was, you know, circumstances out of his control, meaning basically, Bill Belichick. And so at least Brady today did address those remarks by Robert Kraft. I'm not responsible for, you know, how other people will say certain things. I think Mr. Kraft has, you know, been a great influence in my life. And I'm so grateful for, you know, two decades. And, you know, I referenced that the other day. It's been an amazing thing for my family. And I'm sure when I'm done playing, I'll look back and have a chance to really reevaluate you know, my entire career. But, you know, at the same time, I'm excited for, you know, this opportunity that I have.
Starting point is 01:43:56 And, you know, I can only speak to how I feel. And Brady's not the kind of guy. You know, I said this earlier. I've left companies three times. Is you're so excited for the new place. You just don't really have the energy to bang on the old place. You think about them from time to time. Because when you're in a habit of being somewhere for 10 or 20 years, you have so many
Starting point is 01:44:19 different habits that have been created in previous cultures. So you think about the previous place. But as Tom Brady says, I'm not going to bad mouth the Patriots. I leave there with just great admiration for the people in that organization. And it's a world class, first class organization in every way. And I wanted to leave it that way, too. So I know the Patriots have a great team. They always do.
Starting point is 01:44:43 They have great players, great leadership, great coaches. I certainly wish them the best. They do not have great players. right now. And as Joey and I said, I don't think it's a wild contrarian opinion. Whatever the over-under is with New England, I would take the under. They're not interested in any of these quarterbacks available. They release their kicker, their two best defensive playmakers in the linebacking core. They've got a million picks. I think New England's got a plan. I think it's obvious.
Starting point is 01:45:13 They've got 12 picks this year. They're going to get three compensatory picks next year losing Brady, Van Ney, and Jamie Collins. They're going to move some of their picks this year to next year, so they have about a dozen next year, and they're going to use 7, 8, 9. After they go 6 and 10 or 7 and 9, 8th, 9th pick in the draft, they're going to move up. They're going to call the number one or number two team and say, hey, Cincinnati, you got a quarterback.
Starting point is 01:45:41 Hey, New York Giants, you got a quarterback. Here's eight picks. We'll take it. I really think Belichick has a plan. I do not think he's winging it. I think New England's going to step way back for one year, then beyond their way again with a top quarterback prospect. Meanwhile, I think Tom is going to be very productive. It's going to win 10 to 11 games in a really good division.
Starting point is 01:46:04 Tom will win this divorce short term, long term. Tom's going to be out of the league in two to three years. Another quarterback story. The Carolina Panthers released Cam Newton today. Now, you know, I've said Cam Newton, and this was my prediction, is Carmelo Anthony. Everybody says they love him, but when it gets down to it, nobody wants to play with him. So essentially, the new Carolina owner, David Teper, who's all about like, he's a culture guy, right? Build the culture.
Starting point is 01:46:31 Didn't want him. Matt Rule, the Baylor coach, is a culture guy. Didn't want him. Ron Rivera, who knew this was coming. Of course he did. He still got friends in the building. Signed Kyle Allen. Not interested.
Starting point is 01:46:45 What's Ron Rivera doing? Building a culture. If Sean McDermin at Buffalo passes on Cam Newton, that'll be four people that have said no thanks. Sean McDermott coached in Carolina. He's got $27 million in cap space. Cam Newton most plays like Josh Allen. He's a perfect fit.
Starting point is 01:47:05 Another story today, Ian Rappaport. Chargers, Bears. Carolina called both. Call the Chargers. They said, no thanks. called the Bears. They said no thanks. So, I mean, the Bears took Nick Foles's contract and traded draft picks over Cam. That's what I've said about Cam.
Starting point is 01:47:22 The media has coddled him. Carolina was very protective of them, which I agree. I mean, if you got issues, just keep, you don't need to put them out there and embarrass players. But this is what I've said about Cam. He's Carmelo Anthony. Everybody's, I believe actions, not words. I don't care what you say. Show me.
Starting point is 01:47:42 I hear all this. We love Cam. Chargers could have had him, Bears could have had him, Carolina could have kept him, Ron Rivera could have had him. Nope, nope, nope, no. You don't think Cam would win more in Washington today than Dwayne Askins? Really? Really? So, you know, again, it's for years and years, I've said Cam had a great year and he's average.
Starting point is 01:48:03 Don't tell me how much you love players. If Damian Lillard was on the market today, half the NBA would go crazy to get him. But nobody ever talks about Damien Lillard in the same. kind of loving fashion as Westbrook. If Westbrook was on the market, most teams wouldn't want him. Most teams wouldn't take Westbrook. So who's really valuable? To me, it's Damien Lillard much more than Westbrook.
Starting point is 01:48:26 What are you worth on the market? Okay? I don't care about, you know, what are you on the market? When LeBron's available, they line up. They line up for LeBron. Mello's on the market, comes off the bench for Portland. Or is he starting now or coming off the bench? They don't have any wing scorers.
Starting point is 01:48:44 He's probably starting. All right. Joel Klatz around the corner. A lot of mock drafts are out there. We were joking. Earlier today, a little bit of video came out on Tua last night. It's funny because it was like eight seconds. But he was just, you know, he's just out of the protocol.
Starting point is 01:49:04 So he can go out and, you know, he can go out and move now with a trainer. I will say this, and I'll talk to Joe Clat about, I like Tua. I think he's the most talented quarterback. in this draft. I also think he's got a major injury concern. I am a believer generally in life and in sports. Be aggressive. Arizona was hyperaggressive. They're in good shape with Kyler Murray. Minus, you know, think about the Washington Redskins. They drafted two quarterbacks. RG3 was a bust. They ended up with Kirk Cousins winning their division. If you go look at the T, the Jags, you can whiff on the quarterback, Blake Bortles. They ended up in
Starting point is 01:49:43 the AFC championship. Listen, we know, I think Tua, Danny Connell said this. I think Tua is the greatest potential for Drew Brees or a whiff that I can ever remember. Because I don't think Baker Mayfield looks like Drew Brees. I do think Tua is him. Accurate, smaller, excellent leadership qualities, athletic enough to move, but not really a great athlete. I think Tua is, I think his comp is Drew Brees. I never bought it with Baker.
Starting point is 01:50:12 I thought Baker's was Case Keenham with a better arm. So Tua to me is either going to be a legend or you're going to be looking for a GM because you drafted him. But I do believe in sports and in life aggressive wins, I would draft Tua if he was available and I was the Miami Dolphins. I'd draft him. I'd roll the dice. You draft them. If it doesn't work, you got Ryan Fitzpatrick and a bunch of new draft picks. And the following year, you'd draft another quarterback.
Starting point is 01:50:39 But like Justin Herbert of Oregon, I think could be really good or decent. I don't see a lot of whiff. Tua could be a legend or he gets hurt and he's done. You have to be, how comfortable are you with risk? A lot of people aren't. A lot of people are not comfortable with risk. I think Brian Flores, I think he should go for it. And knowing this could be seven games in he's hurt and you're like,
Starting point is 01:51:09 a brother. But I think Miami is on the right track. They've got Ryan Fitzpatrick. I think they're going to be well coached. I think they have a bunch of picks. They're still mostly inexpensive with Ryan Fitzpatrick at quarterback. I would go for it. But I do think there's a legend or you're looking for a new GM quality to Tua. And that video yesterday, it's, you know, you see eight seconds of it and it's like, he looks good. He looks quick. He was the number one high school quarterback. He was the number one college quarterback. Even last year as he was hurt. He was still really, really good. I like him.
Starting point is 01:51:44 He's my guy in this draft. Coming up next, Joel Clatt, don't go anywhere. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific. Welcome back. It's good to have you in our three. The NFL draft is the third week of April. And it's the next big sporting event we have in America. I guess the NFL did get a little bit of a break, free agency in the draft.
Starting point is 01:52:05 They're going to own our sports opinion calendar for at least the next. month to five weeks. Joel Clatt, lead college football analyst for us. Check out his 20-20 draft top 50 players list on at NFL on Fox and Fox Sports.com. It's got seven LSU guys, six offensive tackles. Let me start with this, Clatster. Justin Herbert, you have him as the fourth best quarterback behind Burrow I Get, Tua I get, Jordan Love. Why number four? What do you see on tape that worries you? Yeah, good question. And by the way, great to talk with you. Great to talk with you.
Starting point is 01:52:42 Okay, so let's start with Herbert. So Herbert is an insanely talented, you know, he's a blunt instrument, if you will. He's got a very strong arm. There's no doubt about it. But there are things when you watch his film, and whether it was during the year when I was breaking down his film in preparation for his game against USC in which he played very well in the final three quarters, or now when I go back and watch his film. his film, there are some real red flags to his game. Colin, you can see the talent. He's clearly a big, strong, he's a bright guy, he's a great team player, he's a good quality leader. But when you look at his ability to manipulate
Starting point is 01:53:24 his own offense and use his offense to surgically attack the defense in the places where they're weak, he falls short of some of the other guys. And the Jordan love, you know, love, if you will, above Herbert is just because I think Love has a higher ceiling. I see him with a very similar style of armed talent as Herbert, and yet a much higher ceiling because he makes more NFL style of throws into NFL style of windows in terms of where he's going with the ball and where the structure of the defense tells him to go with the ball. Quick example here.
Starting point is 01:54:03 Justin Herbert, his first instincts, a lot of the time, is to flinch in the pocket and his eyes go down to the rush. That's an alarming trait to see, especially when you see a very experienced player in college football that's taking a lot of snaps and he's still making those, what I would call, immature mistakes from the quarterback position. So this is a guy that is not very surgical with his game. He's more of a blunt instrument. If you want to succeed in the NFL, I think that you need to become a surgical passer from the quarterback position, whether that's out of the pocket or inside the pocket. That's what wins in the playoffs, and that's why I've got Herbert below those other guys. Now, I think Tua is going to be a legend, or you're going to be looking for a new GM if you
Starting point is 01:54:46 draft him. I think there's a huge, I think his ceiling's really high. I love so much about him, but the injury stuff, if you are a GM, like a Miami, do you take him? Well, I don't think he's getting past that spot, and I think that Detroit probably is starting to, in particular with some of these videos, I'm sure you've seen the video on social media of him working out and Hithua we're talking about. He looks great. I mean, he really does. And I'm so happy for him that he seems to be as healthy as he is in some of those videos and moving so well.
Starting point is 01:55:16 Like we expect and want him to move in this time period in particular after that horrific injury to his hip. Now, you bring up a couple of questions. One is his injury status. And we're not just talking about his hip. I'll get into that in just a second. We're also talking about his value and what's happening at the top of the draft. If I'm looking at the top of the draft, Colin, I've got to tell you that, The most advantageous spot right now seems to be Detroit at three because they have a quarterback in Matthew Stafford.
Starting point is 01:55:46 And the guy that they covet is Jeff Okuda, the corner from Ohio State, who they could probably get in the fifth or sixth spot. And that's the spot in which you see those teams that desperately need the quarterback are sitting. So if you're the chargers and you really want Tua, guess what you've got to do? You've got to go up ahead of Miami. If you're Miami and you really love Tua, guess what you've got to do? guess what you've got to do. Box out the chargers from going up and getting him. And the spot becomes three with that Detroit pick.
Starting point is 01:56:13 I think Detroit could move down to one of those spots, still get Okuna, Okuda, who I think is the best corner in the draft, sure up some of that defensive edge that they need to under Matt Patricia. And to me, that's the best most advantageous spot, at least early in the draft, is that Detroit pick. Now to the injury part that you asked about that kind of dual part question, here's the concerning part for me about two. It's not necessarily just his hip, although yes, that's concerning.
Starting point is 01:56:38 It's the fact that Colin, he's never played a full season healthy, even in college football. He's had the ankle injuries. And all these injuries, to me, have a very similar pattern. And that is the pattern that Tua believes he is more elusive than he actually is. Now, is he very good on his feet? Yes. Is he as elusive as Russell Wilson? Not even close, which is why he gets caught, tackled from behind,
Starting point is 01:57:03 and get some of those high ankle sprains and then ultimately that horrific hip fracture that he suffered. They're all very similar in their nature and they all have a common thread of him being a little less athletic than he thinks he is, which is a problem. And that would persist in the NFL in my mind. So while I think he is a great player, I've got him five on my big board, I think he could be Drew Brees. I think he needs to be more Drew Brees than Russell Wilson because he's not as athletic as he thinks. he is. And when he's running around, that's what leads to some of those injuries, which have led to him not
Starting point is 01:57:39 finishing a season in college football. You know, it's, it's interesting. So there's seven LSU guys in your top 50. A lot of offensive tackles. It's a good year for tackles, bad year for center, good year for corners, wide receivers, a lot of SEC
Starting point is 01:57:55 guys in your top 50. Let's see here. Yeah, boy, I see a lot of S. You kind of, you know, you are tough on the SEC clat. I see a lot of SEC guys here. What's up with that? Well, I'm going to push back and just say, I don't believe I'm tough in particular on the
Starting point is 01:58:14 top end of the SEC. I like to call it how it is. The top of the SEC is the class in college football. You know, I think Ohio State had a great year. I think Clemson had a great year outside of that conference. And other than that, there really wasn't anybody else on that tier of Alabama and LSU. My argument during the fall has always been, and I think that you would. back me up on this if we weren't like you know being sarcastic or tongue and cheek my argument has
Starting point is 01:58:38 always been that the middle and bottom of that conference shouldn't get a pass for how bad they are just because they can ride on the coattails of great programs at the top namely the top three if you include georgia in there and even if you wanted to throw florida and maybe auburn in there as well it's a it's a terrific conference at the top the middle and the bottom of the conference is not as strong as everybody makes it out to be and those are the fan bases that generally like to scream and shout about SEC and get the chance going. But it's a phenomenal conference. It's proven out in the draft.
Starting point is 01:59:08 I see it when I evaluate. That's why I've got all those guys in my top 50. Yeah, look at all these offensive linemen. Good Lord. You know, what is it about Iowa? How the hell is Iowa? Iowa wins seven games a year, and they've always got four guys in the top 50. They have your favorite offensive tackle.
Starting point is 01:59:25 One of the best pass rushers. Just a couple years ago, they had two of the top tight ends. I don't know what it is. Part of me loves Iowa. He wants to punch him in the forehead for scheduling Citadel six times a year. Why do they put so many guys in the NFL? I didn't understand that they scheduled the Citadel. They've always got a cream puff ridiculous out-of-conference schedule.
Starting point is 01:59:47 They play directional schools. I disagree. They always play Iowa State with Matt Campbell. They're good for an hour. Great. They play a big-puff game. They play nine conference games, so that's 10 power-five games. And normally they'll play like a northern ice.
Starting point is 02:00:02 Iowa, if you will. Northern Ireland. Listen, you want to punch Iowa in the face sometime. Let me just tell you for a fact, Zach Johnson from FJ.A. Tour can back me up on this. They want to punch you in the face. Hey, hey, I'll go there any time,
Starting point is 02:00:18 line up, and punch that all of them right in the forehead. I mean it. I am tired of Iowa, but they do produce really good football players. A lot of them. Unbelievable. They really do. You are unbelievable. I'm here to defend Iowa. I had them in the bowl game.
Starting point is 02:00:33 I'll tell you what, that's a good program. Oh, no. That is a very good program. Well coached. U.S.D. not that U.S.D is all that strong right now. Yeah, I just looked at their schedule for next year. They open up with Jiffy Loeb, Panera Breads right after that.
Starting point is 02:00:45 You're right. Okay, let's move on. When you look at this drag. Okay. Now do your beloved SEC in November. Go, go ahead. Look at the Citadel in there. Look at Charlotte in there.
Starting point is 02:00:55 Go ahead. Colin. Listen, if you're going to call a spade a spade, then call it a spade across the board. Here's all I know. Every year in the draft, the top 50 players half are from four teams in one conference. Yeah, no, that's absolutely true. And then if you throw Ohio State in there and Clemson in there, that basically covers it. And you sprinkle in, you know, places like Penn State and places like that.
Starting point is 02:01:19 And then you basically got it. Yeah, let me, one thing here. You're a former quarterback. All quarterbacks, I think, make their receivers, not vice versa. Larry Fitzgerald, best years with his best quarterbacks. Can't you look at, LSU is probably the best college football team I've ever seen in terms of. They have the best O-line. They have the second best running back in the draft.
Starting point is 02:01:44 They have the best one of the best receivers and the best undraftable receiver. He's still in college. They have the best undraftable corner. I mean, they're going to have like 12 guys drafted. Can you at least... Let me interrupt you for just a second because I want to tout Joe Burrow for a moment here. This might be where you're going with the question. I don't know if it is or not.
Starting point is 02:02:03 They've had all that talent for years. So why didn't they win the national championship and put together some of the best years that we've ever seen? That was one of the singular best years that we've ever seen a team have. Yeah. And I would argue that the single catalyst was Joe Burrough. Then why was he so mediocre the year before with all those players? Well, he got there so late.
Starting point is 02:02:21 Remember now he got there so late. He got there after spring football. He goes through spring football in Columbus. And because remember, Colin. He started at Ohio State first. He goes through spring football in Columbus. Haskins wins the job. Urban Meyer rightly declares Haskins, the quarterback at that point.
Starting point is 02:02:40 So Burroughs was able to go transfer. So he didn't transfer until after spring football. That's 15 full practices. That's a full fall camp. So he missed a full fall camp. Now he gets there. He gets in there a bit late. I think it's understandable that he was average his first season
Starting point is 02:02:57 because he didn't have a full office. season to play with that team. Then once you have him as the quarterback, remember he took that huge hit in the Fiesta Bowl against UCF on a pick that I think was ended up being a pick six. He gets rocked. He comes right back, leads him to victory. There's the turning point for your team as a program. That's the catalyst for then moving into the off season. He's the bona fide leader. He leads spring football. He leads the throwing sessions in the summer. He leads fall camp. And now all of a sudden you have a team that is behind a true leader at the quarterback position. I think it's a far different set of examples or a set of, you know,
Starting point is 02:03:39 outlying deals that you have in his previous season. I really believe that. And I think if you look at it and I've talked to many coaches down there, this was really his offense. I mean, he was so involved in calling and building these offensive games. plans and what they wanted to run and how they wanted to run it. Joe Brady got a lot of credit for it. I understand Joe Brady got a lot of credit for it, but Joe Burrow was the single catalyst of change from a program that was perpetually underachieving with great recruiting classes under a coach that was just an old defensive line coach. And now all of a sudden he thought of
Starting point is 02:04:16 as this great epiphany of a head coach because he had a quarterback that was unbelievable. Joe Burrow was a surgeon. If Herbert was a blunt instrument, Burrow was a surgeon. This game translated. I've said it on your show, and I'll say it before, say it again. Joe Burrow reminds me of Joe Montana. When Joe Montana played the game, he played with a smoothness in his feet and a surgical approach mentally attacking the defense that at that point was beyond reproach.
Starting point is 02:04:45 He had no peer at that point in the way that he played. Burrow is similar to that. He's so smooth. The basketball background, the absolute competitive nature that you see. when he gets hit and bounces back, the surgical nature in which he sees the weaknesses and the structure of the defense, and then he goes out and attacks him.
Starting point is 02:05:04 I love Joe Burrow, man. Must be nice when you have nine seconds to throw behind the offensive line of LSU. You're telling me he's Joe Montana. What happened in all those years before? He couldn't beat out Dwain Haskins. Couldn't beat him out. He couldn't be out J.T. Barrett. He threw 50 touchdown passes at Ohio State.
Starting point is 02:05:20 You're acting like Dwayne Haskins was chopped liver. He put together the single best Big Ten passing season that we've ever seen. Couldn't be out J.T. Barrett. Couldn't be out J.T. Barrett. Well, you'll have to ask Urban about that. J.T. Barrett, right now is, where's he? He's a scout team guy, I think, somewhere actually.
Starting point is 02:05:39 Okay, so put a line in the stand. You would take two over Joe Burrow. I think there, I think if Tua didn't have a hip-in. Why are you hymn and Han? If you're going to, listen, if you're going to cross the top, walk to walk. I said, Burrow is Tony Romo. you've got him because he shares the same shoe size as Montana as the second greatest quarterback of all time. I think that's a little over the top.
Starting point is 02:06:03 I believe, won't guarantee, I believe Joe Burrow will have a much better NFL career than Tony Romo who didn't win a playoff game. With Cincinnati's ownership in front office? In that division? Well, I didn't say where he was going to play, but I did just share with you how he changed the culture of a perpetually undering a, an underachieving program with top 10 classes, and he took them to the single greatest season that we may have ever seen a college football team have, certainly the best single season I've ever seen as quarterback has.
Starting point is 02:06:34 Let's make a bet. Maybe he's the catalyst for change. This is the easiest bet. I feel guilty because you have a wonderful family. So what bet are we going to? I'll make you a deal. He does not make the playoffs in his first five years. So this will be a long payoff bet.
Starting point is 02:06:49 Let's do a short payoff bet. He will be, he will, Be the fourth best quarterback in his division, his first year in the NFL. Let's bet something delicious. What do you want to go on? Dinner, you name the spot. I mean, this is the easiest bet I've ever made. I thought Goulet was a sucker.
Starting point is 02:07:10 I mean, this is a lot of constraints here. Fourth best in his own division? Yeah. Passer rating, fourth best passer rating own division. I mean, that has so many other factors rather than his actual game. I would rather do. I thought he was Joe Montana. I would take a playoff in his first three years.
Starting point is 02:07:28 First three years, and I'll put $1,000 to any charity. Joe Montana. I won the Super Bowl first year. Well, then take to it. Take to it, Colin. If you're going to talk like this, then take to it. Come on. Come on.
Starting point is 02:07:42 You got the mic. Tough enough. No, I'm kidding. All right. I'm done with you, Klat. Go to at NFL on Fox and Fox Sports.com, the great joy. clack good talking to you my man have a great day hey by the way thank you to all the first responders the nurses the doctors you're out there on the front lines we love you thank you or thinking about you
Starting point is 02:08:04 awesome uh ditto ditto ditto ditto here's joy taylor with the news turn on the news this is the herd line news oh Colin that was like poetry he's literally he knows his feet are like Joe Montana what my feet are like Bob Costas. What does that mean? That doesn't mean anything. His feet are like... You know I hate comps.
Starting point is 02:08:32 So I don't want to compare Joe Burrow to anyone, although I have heard Montana from several people. I just think that Joe Burrow is great. And I like listening to Joe Clyde agree with me. Also, I think you're running out of places to go in the country because now you need a pass to go to Iowa.
Starting point is 02:08:47 So you need a pass to go to Cleveland, they do. Iowa. Oklahoma City. Yeah. By the way, I will say this about Iowa. They not only put guys in the NFL, they're almost always good. Like Iowa puts guys in the NFL. They do not.
Starting point is 02:09:02 Alabama puts a million guys in the NFL, half can't play. Iowa guys go to the NFL. They can almost all play. Very consistent, very solid. So LeBron James is in his 17th NBA season and is still obviously playing at a high level. And he was asked if there was any NBA franchises he would never join during a live stream on Instagram. And he responded with a strong commitment. to the Lakers.
Starting point is 02:09:25 I'm still playing, man. I got to keep all my options open, man. But right now I tell you one thing, I don't want to go nowhere besides be here, baby, be the Laker for the rest of my life. That's nice. LeBron has been very active on social media, as most of the NBA players,
Starting point is 02:09:41 because obviously we are shut down. It comes to sports, so staying busy on TikTok and whatnot. But it was a really nice commitment to the Lakers, although I don't think there was a question in anyone's mind at this point that he was going to finish his career anywhere except for Los Angeles, right?
Starting point is 02:09:56 Right, yeah. I mean, it just fits his, right now his brand's big, L.A. is big. This is where he should end it. I mean, maybe there was some thought that he would go back to Cleveland, so you would retire a cab or something. I mean, I never thought that I think he's going to retire a Laker. You know, if they don't finish the season, it's, we've had so many conversations this year about him being the MVP.
Starting point is 02:10:19 It's kind of, it's another sad thought if they don't, end up finishing the season that LeBron wouldn't get the MVP with the level that he's been playing at this season, averaging 25.7 points per game, almost eight rebounds per game, 10.6 assists per game, leading the NBA and assists, and shooting 49.8 percent field goal percentage. He just had an incredible season, so hopefully they end up being able to finish it. So the Texans traded DeAndre Hopkins to the Cardinals last week. When the move was made, Deshaun Watson tweeted, this is crazy and that he didn't know how to think someone that someone that did so much for his career.
Starting point is 02:10:53 And he seemed to make another statement on Twitter yesterday, but he was quoting lyrics from Drake's song Emotionless. There's going to sound weird reading it, but he posted, I don't know how I'm going to make it out of here clean because I can't even keep track of who plays with the other team. Iconic duos rip and split at the seams. Now, obviously, we are a little shot fired. We're reading a little into everything right now on social media
Starting point is 02:11:16 because we all have a little extra time on our hands. But I can't imagine that Deshawn Watson is very happy right now, obviously losing DeAndre Hopkins was a huge deal, but I really don't understand the approach that the Texans are taking to their organization in general. I'm a firm believer that great leaders delegate, so having control and having all the power sounds great in theory, like being able to make all of the decisions, but it also means all the responsibility and all of the fallout goes on you as well. So if you're going to be everything to an organization as Bill O'Brien is,
Starting point is 02:11:53 then all those decisions need to come from a level-headed place. And he has been accused of getting a little emotional when it comes to players and making decisions from that space, as opposed to when you have a GM, you have someone he can bounce things off of to make a wider decision for your organization. Like losing DeAndre Hopkins, when Deshawn Watson is already running around for his life,
Starting point is 02:12:16 seems like a really bad decision. Yes. especially for what they got for him. Well, they don't have a GM. And so when you don't have a GM, you get worked by other GMs. Right. Exactly. I mean, you're at a disadvantage.
Starting point is 02:12:28 So Tom Brady was introduced as a member of the Buccaneers today, and he gave a little insight into why he chose Tampa Bay. There are a lot of things that really were, you know, intriguing to me about the organization and, you know, the players and the coaches and, you know, the willingness of everyone to try to, you know, accomplish what the goal of playing football is, which is the win. You know, I'm going to try to do everything I can in my position
Starting point is 02:12:52 and what I'm responsible for to make that happen. And, you know, I've got to trust that everyone else is doing the exact same thing. So in that part, it's no different from, you know, what I've experienced, you know, for 20 years in my own role. I'm very, very interested to see what the Buccaneers look like this year. We obviously know they have a lot of offensive talent. We know they'll be fun. It's going to be fun.
Starting point is 02:13:15 Yeah. But fun to me is like what this move is really all. about because we're seeing what the fallout is in New England's and it's clearly has a lot to do with the riff with Belichick even though you know no one's really confirmed that directly it's all little passive aggressive when it comes to that I think we can all assume that that's what happened so he's going to the buccaneers to quote unquote win but it's not necessarily an easy situation Carolina we imagine is going to be a little bit better he's going against drew and the saints who have not taken a step back this is not an easy road for Tom Brady but
Starting point is 02:13:45 it does feel like this is a move that he's making so that he can have a little bit of relief. You know, he's going to have some strong offensive pieces. He's going to be looked at as a leader. Everyone there is excited to have him. The fans are going to be re-energized in that market. But it's also just going to let him play loose for the first time in what feels like a long time.
Starting point is 02:14:06 Yes. And that feels like that was the biggest part of this move. He's going to go somewhere where he's going to be able to just be himself and be happy and not have the pressure that he had in New England along with whatever rift is going on with Bill Belich. Yeah, he's going to a place that he doesn't have to be compared to himself, right? Like, he had to top himself in New England. Now he goes 10 and 6, he is a savior.
Starting point is 02:14:28 That's a great feeling. Well, that's why I think he loses or he wins the divorce, at least temporarily, because I have no expectations of Tom Brady winning another Super Bowl, but if he is good to great within the next two years before he retired. It's a great way to go. But it's also going to look like Belichick maybe made this decision too soon, because if Belichick of the next five years doesn't get back to the top, It's going to feel like, you know, maybe you were still a little premature on bailing on Tom Brady.
Starting point is 02:14:53 Good stuff. Joy with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The herd line news. Some teams will obviously get better with the NFL draft slightly. I'm a big believer that free agency is where the really smart teams get better. So best for last, this will be fun. I'm going to give you my first herd hierarchy post-free agent class.
Starting point is 02:15:16 top 10, a lot of, I'm going to roll the dice on some of these. What I believe are the top 10 teams in the NFL after free agency. Now again, somebody's going to plug some holes. Jets are going to get a couple of offensive linemen in the draft, but I don't think they're a top 10 team regardless. Free agency. Hard hierarchy. Next.
Starting point is 02:15:36 One more herd? The herd streams 24 hours a day, seven days a week within the IHeart radio app. Search herd to listen live or on demand whenever you'd like. Health concerns more important than ever. Take care of your body. MDrive Elite. Immune support. Testosterone support.
Starting point is 02:15:52 Go to MDrivefermen.com. Code heard 20% off. I do think teams get better in the draft. No question. But I've always done a show after the draft where I combine, I don't do a post-draft show. The show I do after the draft
Starting point is 02:16:06 and I've done this for 15 years. I take your free agent signings and your draft picks. And I take the top four or five picks. Are you a better football team? Because let's be honest. Free agent picks, I know what I'm getting with most NFL free agent picks. I don't know what I'm getting with the draft.
Starting point is 02:16:22 Outside of a dozen guys, you have a pretty good sense they can play. So here we go, our best for last, my first herd hierarchy of the NFL season coming up post-free agency. Heard hierarchy. Time is now, let's go. The top 10 NFL teams, according to college, number 10. I would say Green Bay. They need another receiver in the draft, but they'll probably end up reaching because they have a lower first round pick and the good guys are gone. But they lost right tackle Brian Belaga.
Starting point is 02:16:55 Blake Martinez, another guy I like, an active linebacker. They lost him. They added a linebacker Christian Kirsey. But Aaron Rogers declined last year with a progressive new coach. Right now, I don't see the Packers as being formidable enough, formidable enough to win a Super Bowl. I have them at 10. Number nine. Denver is my dark horse team in the NFL.
Starting point is 02:17:18 They won four of their last five games last year. Drew Locke was the starter. I think they found their guy. Bradley Chubb missed 12 games. He comes back. They added Melvin Gordon. Defensive tackle J.Relle Casey, C. a cornerback, A.J. Bouye.
Starting point is 02:17:35 I think they're a better football team. They've got momentum. They lost a couple of last second heartbreakers last year. I think Denver's a playoff. team going forward. Number eight. Tampa Bay. Listen, they were seven and nine with 35 turnovers at the quarterback position. Bridgewater or Brady, they're going to be better. Excellent defense down the stretch with Todd Bowles. I think one of the smartest defensive coordinators out there. I think Tampa ends up being a wild card team next year. Number seven. Pittsburgh Steelers get big bend back.
Starting point is 02:18:09 They added a tight end I like. Eric Ebron. Don't forget. this is a team that was 8 and 5 with a quarterback named Duck and then they lost their last three games they did an unbelievable patchwork job and the reason they were able to compete they were first in the NFL and takeaways and sacks young defense is talented in getting better at Eric Ebron and Big Band I got the Steelers at seven number six Seattle Seahawks veteran tied in Greg Olson they added him right tackle Brandon Schell. Quentin Dunbar, a very good corner picked him up. They could still keep Judavian Clowny. I may have Seattle low. If not for cluster injuries at running back, it was just
Starting point is 02:18:55 ridiculous. I think they beat Green Bay. So they've added pieces. Russell Wilson's in his prime. I do think they get Jadavian Clowney figured out, Seattle at six. Number five. Philadelphia. They need to draft more than one receiver, but they added an excellent corner, Darius Slay. Carson Wentz really came of age late in the season. Again, the reason I don't have them quite as high as their talent, they're going to have to make some moves to get receivers. They may draft two to three.
Starting point is 02:19:27 It's really right now the primary week spot, and they are talented, but they get a little up there with injuries and age on the offensive line. Number four. New Orleans Saints. I wasn't as high last year, but they proved me wrong. Back-to-back, 13 win seasons.
Starting point is 02:19:43 They added two players I really like. Malcolm Jenkins, super smart, veteran safety, leadership qualities. He's a grown-up. And Emmanuel Sanders, by the way, on our show tomorrow. Emmanuel Sanders, now with Michael Thomas and Alvin Kamara and Drew Brees and Sean Payton. That's just 65 catches and six touchdowns.
Starting point is 02:20:04 That is a great addition in New Orleans. I have him at four. Number three. San Francisco does lose DeForest Buckner, the defensive lineman, but they get a first round pick for it. And they had to pay a couple of their guys, so they need a talented kid. They don't have a pay a fortune to. And so far, they've done a pretty good job drafting players. I still think they have overall the best defensive line in football.
Starting point is 02:20:33 Their receivers are young and getting better, but I think they're going to pick up a great player in the first round at 13. I think they'll keep it rolling. Shanahan to me is the best young coach in football, San Francisco three. Number two. Kansas City. Not a lot of moves. I love where they're going. You know, post-Super Bowl, you know, a little hangover, a little party.
Starting point is 02:20:53 I think their division's tougher. I think Denver's going to be a lot better. I think the Raiders have improved. I think the Chargers get a quarterback. So Kansas City could be good, but they could lose two more games next year just because the division's tougher. Number one. I think Baltimore is scary. First of all, their defense was good last year.
Starting point is 02:21:12 They had Calais Campbell, Marlon Humphrey, Michael Brockers. You do not want any part of Baltimore's defensive line. I also think they have the best secondary right now in the NFL, kind of by far. And again, Lamar Jackson, a lot of people think, well, they're going to figure them out. Well, I saw it from year one to year two, he made a big jump. My guess is year two to year three. He also makes a jump. Baltimore looks good.
Starting point is 02:21:37 Baltimore. Baltimore's defense right now. This is a franchise that's always had really good defenses. If you just go and go online and look at Baltimore's defense, it's got like seven to eight elite defensive players. So they got their offensive line figured out. The quarterback figured out. They hit it last year at wide receiver in the draft.
Starting point is 02:21:59 I think Baltimore right now is the best team in the NFL. Their secondary is filthy. Earl Thomas, Marcus Peters, Humphrey and Jimmy Smith is back, right? Good Lord. Baltimore's defensive line and secondary. I mean, there's going to be at some point. The passer ratings this year, throwing the ball against Baltimore,
Starting point is 02:22:23 maybe the lowest, it will be unbelievable. Poor Joe Burrow. That's the best secondary in the NFL in a decade, potentially, and the best defensive front and football outside of the 49ers, and maybe better than the 49ers. Yeah, you're right. Clatt told me Burroughs Joe Montana, so they just fly right through it.
Starting point is 02:22:41 Hot knife through butter, right? All right. Joe Burrell's probably looking at Baltimore thinking. You know, Miami, if you move up, it's not the... I'd rather face the Jets. Good to have you in. Good to have you in today.
Starting point is 02:22:54 It was fun. Danny Connell, big opinion guy. Howie Long, Matt Mosley, Joel Clat. Speaking of gains and losses, I don't have Dallas in the top 10. They lost. Biron Jones, Jeff Heath, now Travis Frederick, Robert Quinn, Randall Cobb.
Starting point is 02:23:13 Jesus, like six guys that can play. Joy, great job. We'll see tomorrow. See you tomorrow. I can see, Joy, you can't. We're all set tomorrow as well. Good stuff. We're getting through it, man.
