some fascinating games.
I'm going with some favorites this week.
Last week I went with dogs and they were all dogs.
Joy Taylor is joining me.
We had the World Series two nights ago.
We had an NFL game that we didn't know about
but ended up being wildly entertaining.
It was a great game, actually, which you pretty much called.
I said it would be closer than people think.
Say not to get caught up in that,
they're not the hype, but I think, I think it delivered.
It was very fun.
San Francisco had a bunch of dominating wins.
It's the NFL.
go on the road, come back to Earth.
Let me start with this.
I've been doing syndicated radio now for about 15 years.
I was a local guy, right?
And about 14, 15, 16 years ago, I started talking about something on the air.
And nobody'd ever talked about it.
And some people said it was ridiculous and absurd.
And people wrote articles about it.
And I said, you ever notice that there's a lot of quarterbacks in the history of football?
A lot of the best quarterbacks are really handsome, like would walk into a room full of men.
you'd be like, oh, that's, that guy's really handsome.
You know, there's, you know, obviously there's some Brett Favre guys out there,
but like there's quarterback position more than any other position.
And I started getting calls.
And back then, emails from NFL guys saying, hey, I like your show.
You talk a lot of football.
And there's something we call quarterback face.
And it is a real thing.
We're looking for confidence.
Yes, an arm.
Yes.
You started for three years.
college, yes, all the requisite skills. NFL scouts call it quarterback face. And Jimmy G
has the league's best quarterback face. My wife doesn't watch a lot of sports. She goes,
boy, San Francisco's good. Who's their quarterback? And I showed her a picture of Jimmy G on my phone.
She goes, oh my God. Oh, my Lord, he looks like a quarterback. And I said, yes, it's called quarterback
face. And it matters. And he reminds me of a young Tom Brady who we said, well, he's got a
Coach, Brady's got Belichick and a defense in a running game.
But there was an it quality to Tom Brady.
And that it to me was O's confidence.
And I know it sounds absurd.
But he was so great on third down last night.
And third down in the NFL for a quarterback is not only the money down,
it's the confidence down.
Garoppolo is great on third down.
He plays cocky.
He goes for it.
And I know it sounds absurd.
But I started talking about this years ago.
If you look like Jimmy G and walked into rooms from 15 years old until 28 years old,
I don't even have to ask Joy.
I can figure it out.
You'd feel pretty darn good about yourself.
You'd turn heads.
And look at baseball.
Look how many great players going to hitting slumps.
They don't forget how to hit.
They lose their confidence.
Look how many great golfers get what they call the yips.
They don't forget how to chip and put.
They lose their confidence.
Derek Jeter used to always say, I don't want a lot of things negatively swimming in my head during a baseball season.
I want to go to the plate and feel good about the game and feel good about myself.
It's easy to feel good about yourself when you look like Jimmy G.
And last night on third down, I'm watching him.
And I'm like, God, he plays.
I mean, the guys only started like 18 games.
He plays with so much confidence on third down, 86% percent.
completion percentage, 153
pass-er rating, and Kyle Shanahan
talked about his third
down after the game.
That's usually where quarterbacks
earn their money. I mean, you can do a lot of things on first
and second down, and, you know,
you can mix and run or pass and kind of even out the game.
But on third down, that pass rush is coming.
They always have their best coverage as a blitz called, and
you need a good guy back there. He was on a night
throwing, he got to the right spots, and
when it wasn't there, he made plays with his legs.
You know, it's funny about this topic.
Gallon, you're really silly, and this is, but
when the scout started calling me and saying, no, it's a real thing.
You go back to the Dallas Cowboys.
If you look at their franchise quarterbacks, it's, you know, Aikman and Stobach and
Dack and the Square John, the Tony Romo.
It's like, and then the Niners, all-time quarterbacks, Joe Montana, Steve Young,
and Garapolo, Drew Bledsoe, and Tom Brady, and I grew up in Seattle.
All the girls love Jim Zorn, and then it's Russell Wilson.
There's a confidence thing.
When you're a handsome guy, it's called quarterback face.
You walk into a room, high school, college, you walk in and guys are like, that's the guy.
On the recess, on the playground in seventh grade, who gets the ball?
The popular boy, who's popular on the playground?
The girls think he's cute.
The guys think he's cool.
It's called quarterback face.
And I told my wife last night, her initial reaction was, oh, my God, he looks like a quarterback.
And I'm like, it's funny how that works.
You think it's nuts.
Now, you know, I'm not saying, I'm not saying it's always works.
And I'm not saying if you don't have perfect facial symmetry, you can't be great.
I don't need to mention names.
But it is funny.
Farv into Rogers into Montana, into Brady, into Russell Wilson.
I watched Carapolo last night.
He plays with so much confidence for a guy that hasn't started very much.
And much like Brady, when Brady came into the NFL, all we talked about was his coach,
just like Kyle Shannon, is defense.
just like the Niners.
And, well, I mean, they run the ball at will, just like the Niners.
And it's like, no, there's an it quality.
And by the way, you got to have the, you know, by and large, you want to be about 6-2 in the NFL,
exceptions, obviously.
You want to have the requisite mobility arm, obviously.
You want to be a two to a three-year starter in college, obviously.
I'm not saying it's the number one box of check, check, check, check, check,
check, check.
But there is a box for quarterbacks, the it box, the confidence box.
And I asked Jimmy Johnson once.
I said, what's leadership?
And Jimmy Johnson, one of the great coaches ever goes,
I don't really know what it is.
Yeah, I think it's a lot of confidence, among other guys.
I can't really explain it.
But, you know, do you have the confidence, you know,
if you succeeded at something a lot in life?
And I'm like, and Jimmy Johnson, I said with Troy Aikman,
he's like, he just had the, Troy just was a, it was, it, it, it, it.
there's an it.
And I think the it, part of it is
quarterback face. That dude
he plays confident.
I would too.
I mean, that razor stubble, that's after shaving.
I mean, it's absurd.
All right, let me shift to this.
There is a player who's very talented.
He has been in and out of rehab.
Struggle. Personal struggles.
Josh Gordon.
Very talented.
New England basically letting him go.
And so now they waited a while.
he'll go what they call like a waiver wire list,
meaning bad teams get the first chance at Josh Gordon.
So there's a team in the NFL that may not get a shot at him.
But there's a team in the NFL.
I would absolutely go get him.
Hey, he's imperfect.
He's had relapses.
There's a story in New England.
His work ethic tailed off.
If I'm the New Orleans Saints, you have to go get Josh Gordon.
Because I got news for you.
If you're the Saints, the Dallas Cowboys give you trouble defensively
because you have no vertical passing threat.
You have none, and you have no mobility at quarterback.
So the New Orleans Saints are not getting past San Francisco's defense.
Because to beat San Francisco's defense, there's only two ways to do it.
Arizona showed it last night.
You got to beat them over the top, and you have to have a quarterback that's mobile.
So Green Bay could beat.
Green Bay could beat San Francisco.
Aaron Rogers can move and they can beat you over the top.
New Orleans cannot beat San Francisco.
Dallas has shown you.
Dallas last two times they play the Saints.
Beat us over the top.
We're going to go into the box, put a pass rush on Drew Brees, who's not very mobile, and stop Alvin Kamara.
Saints can't score.
Now, the Saints have a great quarterback, a great defense, and a great coach.
And I'm not saying San Francisco would blow them out.
But the Saints culture, like New England, can certainly handle.
a player who's had some personal issues.
Josh has.
Don't know him very talented, but he's a guy that struggles with some things that
football coaches don't love.
But if you look at New England, what was the whole of their team receiver?
They went out and got one at the trading deadline.
San Francisco, what was the hold in their game?
A veteran receiver, Emmanuel Sanders, they went and got one.
What is the hole in New Orleans game?
No vertical passing threat.
Michael Thomas averages 109 yards again.
game. Their second best receiver, Ted Ginn, averages less than 40. They don't have a number
two receiver. And they don't have any deep threat, nor do they have a quarterback who's mobile.
You're not getting through San Francisco without one of those two. You've got to beat him over
the top or you're going to beat him with your legs at quarterback. And Kyler and Marie could do both,
especially the latter. He can move by time, outrun their defensive ends. New Orleans,
this is absolutely worth the risk. You have the culture to withstand it.
And he gives you a dimension you desperately need.
Don't kid yourself.
I mean, you know right now in the NFC.
I like a lot of teams in the NFC.
Three of them look different.
San Francisco Green Bay and New Orleans.
They all look different.
New Orleans is going to have to face either both or one of those two.
And if you face San Francisco with breezes lack of mobility and no deep threat,
you're not moving the football.
You are not moving the football.
I think Josh Gordon to the Saints makes a ton.
of sense.
Watch Kyler Murray last night and was incredibly entertained.
I worry about something with Kyler Murray,
and I don't know if it's solvable within the Arizona Cardinals organization.
It's real.
They don't do it well.
I don't know if they can do it well.
And I think it could really puncture Kyler Murray's kind of next two years with this franchise.
I just don't know if Arizona can solve something they've never been good at.
That is coming up.
Plus, blazing five picks in 45 minutes.

American soccer is about to explode.
The World Cup is coming.
Ramos sending on to Ernie Stewart the chip.
I'm Tad Ramos.
I'm Tom Boe. On our podcast, Inside American Soccer, you'll get the real storylines.
I'm not worried about Policic. I'm not worried about Balagan. I'm not worried about McKinney.
My only concern is what happens in the back.
The biggest decisions.
If you're going to look at stats and numbers, he has no shot at making this World Cup team.
And the truth about the U.S. national team.
It wouldn't be a huge surprise if our team ends up in the quarterfinals or potentially a great run into the semi-final.
The World Cup is almost here.

Hope your Thanksgiving was great last night.
Halloween.
Halloween.
What did I say?
Thanksgiving.
Did I really say that?
Yeah.
That's around the corner.
We're having a big party.
Don't skip Thanksgiving either.
No.
I'm watching you, world.
Everyone tries to get right under Christmas.
No.
It's disrespectful.
To Thanksgiving.
It is because it's a great holiday.
It's a great.
It's actually, it's kind of the better of the two.
Because like you get all the drinking and the eating and the family and the football and not all of the shopping.
Yeah, totally agree on that.
So I'm watching.
and Kyler Murray last night. He's having a great year, by the way. He's fun as hell to watch.
He's having a terrific year.
You know, the Russell Wilson comp, I always said that this is the closest to Russell Wilson,
and they're both baseball players. He throws a beautiful ball. Tight spiral.
You know, I always say about Tribisky as ball dies.
Kider's ball just elevates. He throws a much better ball than the other young quarterbacks.
I think he's more accurate. I like his throwing motion better than Sam Darnold.
I like him athletically more than Baker Mayfield. I think he throws a better ball than Lamar Jackson.
I think he throws a much better ball than Mitch Trubisky.
He's small.
And it's hard for me to get over that because he just doesn't even look like any quarterback I've ever seen.
But he had a great night last night, 71% completion percentage,
pass-for rating of 131 against the Niners.
And he's had a tremendous year.
I mean, he throws a beautiful football.
But here's what I worry about.
NFL organizations, it's kind of crazy.
some just draft certain positions well.
Steelers, wide receivers and linebackers.
Whatever it is, it's a certain scout in their organization.
Steelers draft wide receivers and linebackers.
Chicago drafts linebackers well.
Green Bay drafts offensive linemen very, very well.
An organization similarly, even good organizations,
don't draft certain positions well.
New England can't draft a wide receiver to save their life.
Chicago historically in Miami struggle with a quarterback position.
And frankly, Arizona is lousy for whatever reason at drafting offensive linemen.
They just quit doing it about four years ago.
They're bad at it like Belichick.
Now, the problem is you need offensive linemen.
But they started going inside the league to get offensive linemen.
They don't do it well.
And I'm watching last night, Kyler Murray has been sacked.
Now, think about this.
Think how athletic he is.
And I think his size helps him in terms of scrambling because sometimes he kind of gets lost
behind those offensive linemen.
He can't see him.
he'd been sacked 29 times.
That's with his mobility, with his size, and the fact that he's got a coach that's very much about getting rid of the ball quickly.
The rest of these guys that lead the NFL in sacks, Flacco's not mobile, Dalton's not mobile.
James Winston has had, for most of his career, really bad old lines.
I don't know if Arizona can fix this.
And it sounds strange.
You would think a team drafts every position equally.
they don't.
Pittsburgh never misses on wide receivers.
Chicago historically, they can't get quarterback right.
Maybe it's a lack of this scout, preponderance of this scout.
Maybe there's, you know, I've talked to NFL teams about this.
Sometimes you just put your best region, your best scout becomes your southern region.
And the South gives you great linebackers and defensive linemen.
And you just have a bevy of them and you draft it well and you go back to it.
I mean, certainly New England is great drafting defensive backs, struggles with wide receivers.
But I think Kyler Murray is good for the league.
I think he's incredibly accurate.
There's a lot of Russell Wilson here, a lot of Russell Wilson.
Both are baseball guys.
Unlike Russell, he was drafted number one.
He'll have ultimate support for the first three to four years.
And I think it's going to work.
But I do worry.
Nothing.
Look around this league.
Nothing punctures a promising quarterback like an O-line.
Andrew Luck retired.
Darnold and Baker-Mayfield are running for their lives.
Deshawn Watson had to take a bus to a game last year.
Jared Goff's first year with a bad old line was a disaster.
Second and third year, they upgrade Andrew Whitworth.
He's pretty good.
Derek Carr is as good as his offensive line.
Good old line, he can be fantastic.
Bad O' line, he looks like a CFL quarterback.
So I worry about it.
I don't know if Arizona's got the personnel people to solve their offensive line issue
because they do it lousy and it looks like they've almost quit trying.
Joy with the news.
No, no, no, no, no.
Turn on the news.
This is the herd line news.
Cam Neumann will miss his sixth straight game this Sunday due to a foot injury.
Justina Anderson is reporting that Cam will meet with a foot specialist,
Dr. Robert Anderson in Green Bay to discuss the injury further.
Dr. Anderson was previously the Panthers orthopedist from 2000-2017.
Rom Rivera said earlier in the week that Cam was still rehabbing.
Cam said he was feeling good on October 27th.
Perjo Person of the Athletic, who tweeted today in response to the report,
most players with Liz Frank have surgery.
Cam Newton tried to go to the non-surgical route.
Can't help but wonder if that might change.
You know what?
And in a weird way, isn't this best for both parties?
For Cam, listen, team is winning without me.
I don't want to hold a clipboard.
Let me just go fix this.
And Carolina's like, we've got to figure out what's going on here.
We got a new owner.
We need to make a decision.
Kyle Allen, start playing.
In a weird way, it feels like the impending breakup's coming.
And I'm not sure it's terrible for either side.
I kind of felt like the breakup had already happened.
Yeah.
And there's just still in the relationship.
Yeah.
I mean, Cam, we.
We were really kind of vague about Cam's status up until this point.
Obviously, we know he was injured, but it kind of felt like, okay, he's going to be back in a couple weeks.
And they're sticking, like, when they kept saying they're sticking with Kyle Allen, like, is that an option?
It's very vague.
Like, if Cam's not available, you're not sticking with Kyle Allen.
You don't have a choice.
So it was very, like, vague wording on how they were going about that to begin with.
And now we know this injury in the rehab is not going very well if he's obviously meeting with the doctor again.
It does make sense to just do the surgery.
rush back this year. He's had a lot of injuries to begin with. So let's just take your time.
The team is obviously sticking with Kyle Allen, aka Kyle Allen is the guy right now.
So even if you did come back, they would have a predicament about whether they put Cam Newton in to begin with.
Because as we know, players are loyal to winning. And if you put Cam Newton back in there and it's a disaster,
what are you going to do? I think it was Greg Olson. It was a member of the Carolina Panthers.
I thought it was Greg Olson was asked about it recently. And he said, listen, it's, it's,
there's a lot of discussions going on in Carolina night now.
It's the elephant in the room.
It's like, all right.
Cam had lost nine straight starts.
He was injured.
Kyle Allen's winning.
He's not as great, but he's a distributor, and we've got a really good defense and good weapons.
And there's a lot of this.
We got a new owner.
There's a lot of discussions in Carolina.
I think they're valid.
We were having a conversation about whether they were going to move off of Cam Noon before the season started.
Thanks.
So to me, this is not an ideal scenario.
Obviously, an injury is never on an ideal scenario.
But Kyle Allen is playing well, and there were questions surrounding Cam Newton to begin with.
I feel like Cam Newton's time in Carolina is coming to an end, which isn't always the worst thing.
Like there is going to be a lot of movement with quarterbacks this offseason.
And don't kid yourself.
Cam may not want to play.
Cam's got a lot of interest.
Cam may be like, I want three years and I'm out.
I think there's a lot of teams in this league that would say Chicago say big arm, cold weather that defense.
I think there's a lot of, I think there's three or four absolute takers on Cam.
And I don't think that Cam is done either.
Sometimes the situation just runs, it runs its course.
And not saying it's dysfunctional in Carolina, clearly it's not, but that this just feels like that's what this is coming to.
So there's been a lot of criticism of Baker Mayfield and his behavior with the reporters the last couple of days.
And Odell was not happy about the comments and came through the defense of his quarterback.
Oh, I like that.
You can't sit here and say it's all on him.
You know what I mean?
We have to take a look at everything.
that's going on around him.
And, you know, and obviously he has to play better.
I have to play better.
We all need to do better.
You can't sit there and be like it's Baker's fault.
I feel like that's the easiest thing for us to do.
And I've been in situations, you know, where one person's getting to blame
and the rest of the people are quiet, you know, just to kind of stay out of the fire.
Like, I'm going to jump in the fire with him.
I'll be the first one.
Some of these losses are on me.
I need to be in the right place, the right time.
I need to do better.
And that's what I plan to do for the rest of the season.
Am I crazy here, Joy?
Why is O'Dellellie?
Baker always available to the media multiple times a week.
I covered an NFL team.
You got Tuesday or Wednesday.
Maybe we wouldn't have all these quotes.
Odell should talk once a week.
Why is he talking for?
I don't know what it is.
Is the organization, Joy, trying to sell tickets?
Baker Mayfield should talk once a week to the Cleveland media.
That's it.
Well, I'm not exactly sure what day that sound was from.
I'm assuming it was yesterday.
but yes, I agree with you.
That's usually the day that they talk.
That's the protocol.
When I was there, when I was covering the Buccaneers and Tony Dungey,
we got one day a week, we could ask anything.
And then guys were, they shut down.
You got a handful.
I don't know, but I like what Odell said, though.
And it's fair, because Odell's not really getting any of the blame in the situation.
Not that it's hard to put blame on O'Dell.
He plays a dependent position.
But he did have some drops, and everyone at,
for the Browns, and those need to play better.
That said, they're going to get a win on Sunday,
and all this temporarily is going to go away.
Yeah.
Because they're going to start rolling.
They're going to be the Broncos, and they are going to get a couple wins.
But that's not what the expectations were this season,
and that's why it feels so much more dramatic.
Speaking of that game, Joe Blacko is expected to miss four to six weeks
because of a neck injury.
Flacco received his second opinion on the bulging disc and his neck.
I was told he wouldn't need surgery.
Head coach Vic Fangio announced that Blacko will not play on Sunday,
but wouldn't say he's out for the season.
You know, everything's still on the table with Joe.
We could leave him on the 53 and wait a while, or could I arm?
Well, by the end of the week, I think we'll have a better understanding
after getting all the medical advice and going over it, you know,
what plan will take long term with him.
Brandon Allen will start against Cleveland on Sunday.
That's going to be awful.
That's also been sacked 26 times and eight starts this season.
Only James Winston and Andy Dalton have been sacked more.
Cleveland's defensive line, strength of their team,
I think this is going to be so ugly, so quickly.
It's coming at a perfect time for the Browns too.
The elixir.
Yes, what do you always say?
Just win on Sunday.
I love Cleveland.
I said it yesterday.
It's one of my blazing five picks of the year.
I love Cleveland this week.
Joy of the news.
Well, that's the news.
And thanks for stopping by.
The Hurd Line News.
On Halloween last night, Kevin Clark for The Ringer,
went as a brilliant, funny sports writer.
Oh, it wasn't much of a stretch.
He's one of my favorite guests.
We don't get him off, and let's bring him on from the Ringer.
Kevin Clark.
NFL writer Wall Street Journal.
How are you?
I'm good, Colin.
How are you?
I am great.
It's good to see you.
You know, you took a lot of heat.
I did.
You come on this show, and you were very critical of Trubisky.
Chicago tends to be extremely vocal.
That's why we love Chicago as a city and a sports city.
And last time you were with us,
what did you say about Deshaun and Trubisky?
I said if Deshawn Watson becomes Michael Jordan,
Mitch Trubisky is Sam Bowie.
Now, at the time that was not a ludicrous take,
then Trubisky makes the playoffs.
Chicago spent four months reminding me of this take,
and now I'd like to remind Chicago a bit of that take.
That's all.
way, Deshawn, we said yesterday if he, in Halloween, he would go as a Harry Potter.
Deshaun has become the wizard. He makes losses into wins.
Chicago, Jay Glazer came on this week and said, listen, you just, you drafted him this high.
You just have to go with it. I said at the trading deadline, I'd have made a move for Teddy
Bridgewater. But Glazer's reasoning is when you draft a guy this high, the wheels have to come
off completely. Do you agree with that, not Jay, but the reasoning behind it, you just, you just play
the string out this year with Trubisky?
I think the disaster that was the end of the game last week
shows that there needs to be a total overhaul of whatever is happening.
I think if Matt Nagy spent eight months trying to fix the kicker situation
and you don't trust your offense to get a couple more yards for the kicker,
the problem was never the kicker.
The problem was the offense and the trust you have in them.
I think Matt Nagy is a very, very good coach.
I just think that right now, I think you have to move up from Trubisky, quite frankly,
or at least bring in a really good veteran who's going to push in next year to where you have the option to go with another guy.
I don't think Chase Daniels that guy for next training camp.
You know, it's interesting.
We are, there's a lot of breakups coming up.
You can feel like Cam and Carolina, we saw Eli benched.
Andy Dalton, Marioita, James Winston.
These are James Winston and the Bucson and the Bucer in therapy and counseling, but the breakup's coming.
You can sense like six, seven years, and there's a lot of different reasons.
Eli too many picks, Dalton Mario to lower ceiling, Cam inconsistent. But when you look at the,
so we have this movement away from guys who aren't winning enough into young guys. And I like a lot
of the young guys. But I worried with Baker and Sam Darnold, I said, are they talented enough
to overcome the dysfunction of the organization? I thought Adam Gase was the right hire.
He's to blame, right? He, yes. You know, I saw a stat the other day. Baker Mayfield's
quarterback rating against pressure is 38.
Sam Darnold's is 39, right above that.
Those are two quarterbacks who don't this year deal well with pressure in their face.
And they're getting a lot of it.
And they're getting a lot of it at this point.
Yeah.
I mean, I think that, you know, at this point,
Adam Gase's weird press conference where he was looking around,
that's the high point at this point.
You know, there was a stat that the football perspective put out last week that was
Adam Gase is now more likely to lose by double digits in his career than win a game.
In his coaching career.
I mean, Joy and I said this, Kevin.
his optics are terrible.
He instills no confidence.
I talked to an NFL coach two days ago, not a head coach, an assistant.
He said, great play caller.
And he can design his way to completions, but he's not liked by a lot of people.
That's a thing, right?
Yeah, I mean, and you look at him in a press conference setting.
He doesn't look like he instills much joy or motivation in his troops, quite frankly.
So I think that there's, if you're going to be an office,
offensive guru, you have to be an offensive guru. You can't be 30 second in scoring. You can't have
Sam Darnold say he's seeing ghosts. And I understand that was, you know, I think a lot of
quarterbacks have said they were seeing ghosts. It just wasn't miced up. Right. But I think just the
optics of the situation are so bad. If you are a bad off, if you are running a bad offense as the
officer guru, what is it you do exactly? Because Greg Williams has it going on on defense, okay? And so
your one job is to improve Sam Darnold and he looks broken right now. He looks broken. And that's
with Levy and Bell, Jameson Crowder. They've got
some components here, it should be better.
They weren't tanking. I mean, they were not tanking.
This is not, you know, the Miami Dolphins here.
They should not be this bad.
And they are. And that's an Adam Gays.
Kevin Clark, one of my favorite NFL guys, he writes for the ringer, formerly
of the Wall Street Journal.
You move to Baker Mayfield.
You know, and it's well documented.
There's a certain personality trait I like.
I've always used the story.
When Russell Wilson broke into the league, I worked for another company out east.
And his rookie camp, I would follow.
him as a Seahawk fan growing up. I would follow him on, you know, social media, Twitter. And at 4.45 in the
morning, he would be tweeting, on my way to look at tape. And I'm thinking, it's June. And I liked
the guy. Baker, I struggle with his temperament, grabbing stuff, throwing balls, police video,
when he did nothing wrong. And I watched these interviews. And I, you know, I could say, I told you,
but is it all Baker?
Should we blame John Dorsey?
It's easy for me to say I want on this Baker thing.
He's a mess.
But I don't care about that.
What I care about is they should be good.
They have players.
In your opinion, at the fabric of it, at the base of it, what's the problem?
It can't all be Baker.
I think installing a new coaching staff is really hard now,
especially when you have a lot of new faces around them.
So you try to integrate Odell into this offense.
Baker Mayfield, you know, he started the second half of last.
year, but he's still a young quarterback.
You bring in a guy Freddie Kitchens, who was never even a coordinator before last year,
and make him the head coach of one of the most dynamic rosters on paper in football.
That's a lot of pressure.
And especially when you don't get full training camps like you used to attend 15 years ago.
That's right.
I mean, there's no more two a days.
It is really hard to get up to speed now in the NFL.
But Cliff Kingsbury looks like he's done it.
Exactly.
And so what's the problem there?
I think Freddie Kitchens may not be up to it.
I think that's what I'm looking at right now is that if you just look at Baker's
regression. And like we said, he can't, you know, he's turning the ball over way too much.
Listen, there are zero teams in the last seven years turned the ball over three straight times
until the Browns last week. Okay. That's not, I know the Patriots defense is amazing,
but you can't turn the ball over three straight times, including one, like Baker was basically
handing the ball off to Lawrence Guy. You're making a very good point here. You don't have two
a days. You don't have the camps. So for a rookie quarterback, at least Cliff Kingsbury had been a
head coach. There are certain jobs that you have to do it to learn.
like like i mean again you can be a pilot and work your way up to bigger planes but like in the nfl
there is a grand canyon gap from coordinator to head coach half fail like it's so i think to your point
freddy's just he's over his head a little yeah i think they were i always thought they were
going to start slow because of that i didn't know it would be this slow where the quarterback
through half the season looks broken i still think that baker mayfield is a really good player
who's going to have a good career ahead of him but whatever's happening there's
year. I mean, I think there's probably something instructive where I know there was a quarterback
injury last year, but we hyped up the 49ers so much last year, and they were a year away.
Even the defense, they were a year away. And I think the Browns, maybe we hype up teams one
year or two early in this league instead of one year too late. Maybe next year is the year we should
pinpoint for the Browns. I don't know. I mean, just the way that teams explode onto the scene
now, it seems like the timing might be right for 2020. Well, to your point, Freddie Kitchens
is a never been a coordinator out of the gate. He faces a competent Mike
Rable, Sean McVeigh, Bill Belichick, Pete Carroll, and Vic Fangio actually feels fair.
That's a fair fight, at least.
Let's move to Lamar Jackson.
I said last week I missed watching Baltimore play.
They're fascinating.
You were early on Lamar Jackson.
I always said I worried about third down.
When you can run for a first down on third down in high school, Pop Warner High School College, you will.
It's not that he can't complete passes.
His mindset, Mike Vic told me this.
He goes third and seven.
I ran my whole life.
Why wouldn't I in the NFL?
But he's sitting in the pocket.
Mostly.
Do they have a shot this weekend?
Well, I think they do.
They're scoring on over 50% of their drives.
They're the only team in the NFL that is scoring points.
The Patriots are giving up points on 7% of their drives.
This is what you want if you're a football fan.
If there was an alien coming down and you said,
explain football to me, you would show them this game as far as the chess match,
the strategy, what's going to happen.
I mean, I can't wait to see what Belichick throws at him.
I've always said this, said this about Mahomes, too.
A young quarterback doesn't become a veteran quarterback in this league
until Bill Belichick is game plan for them.
Because he's going to show them things they've never seen in their entire lives.
I remember when Mahomes went into England last year,
he threw that weird interception almost out of the gate
because they were throwing so many confusing looks at him.
I think you're going to see that with Lamar.
Lamar is averaging, I think, 14 yards per scramble
when he's going up against man defense.
Wow.
Bill Belichick's going to know this.
And so he's going to throw different things.
And I think Seattle, they have an athletic defense.
They have people like Bobby Wagner.
Bobby Wagner couldn't contain Lamar Jackson.
I talked to a couple of coordinators for a story earlier this season about how to contain
Lamar.
And they were saying, look, don't put a linebacker or a safety on him.
He's faster than the cornerbacks.
Yes.
And so if you're going to try to use a defense, you've used on somebody else, you're
going to fail.
And I think Belichick is the king of not using defenses he's used for somebody else.
He builds the game plan.
He will have something for Lamar.
but Lamar, remember, the Patriots defense,
probably the best tackling defense in the NFL.
Lamar is probably the hardest guy to tackle right now in the NFL.
This is the matchup you want if you're a football fan.
All right.
I got to take a break.
I got a couple questions for you.
He's a brilliant writer, Kevin Clark of the Ringer,
and there's a bunch of stuff.
It's called quarterback face.
And I showed, my wife said last night,
oh, San Francisco, they never used to be good until.
And I said, well, they have a new quarterback.
And she said, who is he?
And I showed her a picture of Jimmy Garoppel.
He goes, oh, God, yeah, he looks like a quarterback.
We'll discuss my theory called quarterback face.
And also, Kyler Murray, he's really good, but are there teams that can't draft positions?
Arizona has quit drafting offensive line because they're so lousy at it, and I worry about it with Kyler Murray.
That's all coming up.
Kevin Clark joining us.

The biggest decisions.
If you're going to look at stats and numbers,
he has no shot at making this World Cup team.
And the truth about the U.S. national team.
It wouldn't be a huge.
surprise if our team ends up in the quarterfinals or potentially a great run into the semifinals.

One of my favorite NFL riders totally tied in. Kevin Clark, the ringer used to be at the
Wall Street Journal, which had an underrated sports section now at the ringer. All right, Kevin
Clark, this is going to sound dumb. I started talking about it 15 years ago when I was just
becoming an American icon. I called it quarterback face. All these quarterbacks were handsome guys.
And I said, it's so weird. I grew up with Jim Zorn. Everybody had a crush on him in Seattle,
then Russell Wilson. And then Dallas has, you know, Stawback, into Romo, into Dack, and the
Aikman, Niners have Steve Young, Montana, Garapolo. And I showed my wife a picture. She's like,
oh, God, he looks like a quarterback. And I'm like, it's called quarterback face, Scouts, use it.
And it's a third down, there's an it quality. And I've asked Jimmy Johnson, what's leadership?
And he goes, I don't know, Aikman walked in the room and you're like,
Yeah, he's got it.
He goes, I don't know.
And it's Garoppolo's confidence.
It's something, right?
I think confidence has something to do with it.
I don't know if looks does necessarily.
But I think the ability to, I mean, quarterback is a confidence position.
It is.
You have to commit.
You have to make throws that you don't feel comfortable making.
I mean, if you are a weak-minded quarterback, you will fail very, very quickly.
This is the Kirk Cousin thing.
People said, when Kirk Cousin said, it's all my fault.
People said, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, don't say that.
that.
Quarterbacks don't say that.
Right. Right.
They live, like when Steve Jobs used to say, a reality distortion bubble, right?
That's what quarterbacks have to live in.
They have to basically fake their way through everything.
Okay, you throw four interceptions.
Fine.
We're going to win on Sunday.
The quarterback is the only position that has to operate like that.
Everybody else can sort of do their jobs and stay in their own thing.
You become essentially the de facto mayor of your city when you're the quarterback of your football team.
You have to be the spokesperson.
You have to be an optimist.
and I think that confidence is, look, I don't want to go, you know, Moneyball 15 years ago said, you know, we're not selling jeans here.
So the actual, how somebody looks doesn't necessarily matter as much as how they feel.
And I think maybe that's tied into a little bit of the quarterback.
By the way, Howie Long owe his jokes.
You cannot have two Hall of Fame quarterbacks in the same room.
To your point, he's like there is a alpha to it.
And I just think he plays with incredible confidence on third down, which is a money down and a confidence down.
Okay, Kyler Murray, this may be crazy.
Love watching him.
Yeah.
there are organizations in this league that do not draft certain positions well.
Arizona stinks at the offensive line.
There's is terrible.
He's been hit.
He's been sacked 29 times.
With his mobility, am I nuts on this?
Is this an unsolvable issue?
I've seen organizations that can't draft units, right?
Yeah, it's, yes.
I mean, this is a problem.
And when Kyler was coming into the league, there were scouts and coaches who told me
they hadn't seen anybody better at avoiding getting hit.
in the college level than Kyla Murray.
I mean, this is a guy, there's a reason he's under six feet tall
and has been able to stay as healthy as he has,
been able to be as good as he has.
It's because he knows how to take a hit,
when to fall down before hit,
when to run out of bounds.
We've seen that.
He's run out of bounds to a fault points this season.
You know, I just think that what Kyler Murray's been able to do
has been really incredible.
And I think Cliff Kingsbury's made some really cool adjustments,
playing less four receiver sets as the season goes on, that sort of thing.
He's coach every week.
Cliff Kingsbury has every week, Kevin.
to different game plan?
Getting better.
Every week.
I was in Cincinnati,
and I saw a guy named
Rodney Anderson,
who was a running back
for both Kyler and Baker.
And I went up to him,
and I said,
are Baker and Kyler's success?
That's going to lead to more short
quarterbacks?
And he said, no.
He said, Baker and Kyler
are two of the most special players
who've ever played the game,
and they're not replicable.
It's not like they're going to start
some trend of small quarterbacks.
They're just going to start the trend
of Baker and Kyler being special.
And I know maybe you disagree
on the Baker part.
But I mean, I just think their ability to play in the way, a style that nobody else is playing because of their size in the modern game and make it work is amazing.
And when Kyler's been able to do this half season, it's been really impressive.
It has.
Finally, I'm shocked by the Raiders.
Noise, drama, 10 years out of the league.
Hires Mike Mayock been out of the league.
They're a real team.
They've played a brutally tough schedule.
They've been all over the world.
And I like them this weekend.
And I think they have shocked me.
They have been shockingly competitive.
I watched them go to Indianapolis, and I'm like,
well, no, Indy's good.
Indy's great at home.
What do you make of the Raiders?
Yeah, could have won last week, too.
You know, one of my best friends is Raiders fan,
and he's really plugged in,
and he said at the beginning of this
when I was being one of the Gruden hired,
he said, listen, who launched Sean McVeigh?
Who launched this whole offensive revolution 15 years ago?
It was John Gruden.
And I think there's probably something to that.
John Gruden, as a personnel czar,
has hurt himself.
Yes.
As a coach, he's helping himself.
This is why you make that higher,
because he's a good coach.
Maybe if Mayok were in at the beginning,
and it's somebody that maybe he would listen to a little bit more,
then maybe this situation doesn't get to the point
where he's rid himself of all this talent.
But I think that, you know,
having three first-round picks last year was a positive.
I think he's in a place now where he can build.
It looks like he likes Derek Carr at this point,
which we were touch and go on at this point last year.
So I think that this is John Gruden, the coach,
and we're seeing now he's much better than John Gruden, the organizational leader.
By the way, and I'm sure John has had some influence on draft picks,
his offensive draft picks and his offensive free agent moves,
now he's overspent for a couple of them, but they're working, Kevin.
The offensive side of the ball, I think he does know personnel a little bit.
I like their draft picks offensively.
Josh Jacobs has been terrific.
He's a rookie of the year at this point.
Is he a rookie of the year at this point?
I mean, who's been better?
Kyler?
Possibly.
Yeah, that's it.
Josh Jacobs has been really good offensively.
I had picked Hardman from Kansas City
because I thought he would just get more targets
with Mahomes and all that.
And let's be put that aside.
I think it's Jacobs right now.
I think you're right.
Hey, good stuff.
Kevin Clark the ringer, read his stuff,
terrific stuff.
He's all over the internet.
And we're out of time.
Blazing five's coming up.
Good luck to you.
I love having you on the show.
You're always welcome.

Randall. And then he has to give us everything
he gives us on the night-to-night basis on

Very interesting NFL weekend.
The game of the weekend is probably New England, Baltimore.
I thought last night San Francisco got some pushback.
The running game wasn't great.
The defensive line wasn't dominant.
Kyler Murray played well.
And Jimmy Garoppolo, Jimmy G, Jimmy GQ, was outstanding on third down.
played with a ton of confidence and they won.
So we got ourselves a big weekend, San Francisco and New England undefeated.
Joey, how are you?
I'm great.
That was the game we really deserved from them last night.
We did.
We did.
Fox between Joe, I was texting Joe Buck last night.
Between the World Series, he slides into Phoenix and does that game.
He got two great games.
One we thought would be great, the World Series game seven and one we thought would be awful.
And it turned out, you notice, by the way, Arizona off the script jumped out to a 7-0-0 lead,
then San Francisco kind of just the tsunami of talent overwhelms them.
Then Kyler gets off script, makes a player too with those feet and boom.
There you go.
You have a real game.
Congrats to the Niners.
So we had a rough week last week.
We are hitting 59% of our bets.
That is always our goal.
You can be a professional sports gambler if you get to 55, 56%.
I am not, but I play one occasionally on Fridays during the football season.
Here we go.
All of our odds provided by Fox Bet are Blazing 5.
That's a hot one.
Let's blaze it up.
Fire it up.
It's Collins blazing fire.
Colts and Steelers.
I'm going to take the Colts minus one and a half here.
First of all, I think they're playing for a division.
Houston and the Colts playing for that division.
Jacksonville, Tennessee, not far behind.
So there's a real sense of urgency for the Colts.
James Connor, the running back, not practicing for the Steelers.
So now they won't be able to run the ball.
And they have an incredibly limited passing offense.
Steelers 28 in the league.
in offense.
By the way, the Colts used to be an Andrew Luck story.
Now they're a defensive story.
Their defense in October, fifth and points allowed, eighth in sacks,
tied for fifth and third down percentage.
I think they're very well-coached.
They're on a three-game winning streak,
and their defense is playing excellent football.
I think the Colts go on the road,
and they beat the Steelers 26 to 23.
Detroit and Oakland.
This is a game that is interesting.
Oakland has not played at home for a long time, right? Their schedule. So Oakland and that fan base are going to be crazy.
Detroit, Matt Stafford, this report, he's sick, has a cold, not going in full strength.
Detroit's beat up physically. Meanwhile, the Raiders, think about this. Think how tough their schedule has been.
The Bears in London, at Houston, at Indy, at Green Bay, most travel geographically in the league.
And here they are pretty darn good football team.
And all I got to give up is less than a field goal.
The Detroit Lions are great in the first quarter.
They are dreadful everywhere else.
22nd and second quarter scoring.
20th and third quarter scoring.
28th and fourth quarter scoring.
Derek Carr in the last month has been on fire.
He's in a groove with John Gruden completing 71% of his throws.
The Raiders win by a touchdown.
Good to have them back in the Bay Area, 3124.
Cleveland and Denver.
One of my bets of the year.
I'll take Cleveland to blow out the Broncos,
take the Browns minus three and a half.
Denver has nothing to play for.
They're starting a quarterback, Brandon Allen,
who's never taken an NFL snap.
It's one of the worst offensive lines
and maybe the worst left tackle in the NFL,
and Cleveland's defense is as healthy as it's been,
all year. The Broncos have allowed 27 sacks, bottom six in the league, the Browns top six in
sacks. This is a pop gun offense. Now with a backup quarterback, Nick Chubb will take the pressure off
Baker. Cleveland goes into town, runs the football, dominates. I think Denver's going to struggle
to get first downs. 33 to 10 Browns in an utter blowout, and you'll see it early.
Green Bay and Los Angeles.
It's actually a home game for the Packers.
It is.
They are suggesting it will be the most lobsided road crowd in the Chargers' brief history in their stadium.
80% Packer fans.
I'll take Green Bay minus three and a half.
Listen, this is one of these picks years ago.
If I got a home team, Philip Rivers and over a field goal, you'd always take the Chargers.
Their offensive line is weak.
They can't run the ball.
Phillip Rivers is now an older unathletic quarterback.
I mean, they just struggle to get consistent yards.
Green Bay, best defense in years, best running game in years,
now gets Devonte Adams back.
Aaron Rogers last two weeks without him has been absolutely on fire,
leads the league in TD interception ratio and passer rating.
Philip Rivers last week threw for 200 yards.
And by the way, that's getting the ball in good field position,
because Trubesky can't move the chains.
I like the Packers to win this game, 27 to 23.
I do think the Chargers will make a game of it,
but I'm going to swallow the three and a half
and take Aaron Rogers and Devonthe Adams back.
New England and Baltimore.
I'm going to take the Patriots.
Don't overthink the room on this.
Baltimore's big win is Seattle.
I'm not sure how good Seattle is.
I've got to be honest.
They're like a football away from not,
Not battling for fourth in their division.
Yippee, they beat Cincinnati.
Baltimore's a good team.
They're not a special team.
Lamar Jackson is fun and can run like crazy.
But New England controls the football.
Mohamed Sunu, Edelman, Jacoby Myers, middle of the field.
And New England's defense is first in everything.
Don't outthink the room here.
Patriots have 21 straight games against first or second.
at your quarterbacks they've won. New England's going to control the ball, middle of the field,
take a lead. Now, it's in Baltimore. It's going to be crazy, but just don't out think the room here.
Young quarterback against the great defense. Now with Mohamed Sanoo, there's more of an identity
with New England's offense here. This is an easy three to swallow. I like Lamar. This is a
tough spot here. New England 30, Baltimore 23, swallow the points.
Also, Baltimore's defense here, this is not Baltimore of old.
Their offense is far more productive than their defense.
Brady's going to have time to throw in this game.
He didn't have time to throw against Cleveland last week.
He'll have time this week to throw, and I like the Patriots here to win and to cover.
There you go.
Let me focus in.
So for those listening, I'll take a lot of favorites.
I'll take Indie, Oakland, Cleveland, Green Bay.
I'm taking New England, not Baltimore.
I'm taking New England there.
So I took five favorites.
I'm taking New England to win that game and to cover.
Okay.
So let me talk about Cleveland.
I think they're going to blow Denver out.
In the NFL right now, there are some divisions we feel very strongly about.
I feel very strongly that New England's going to win their division.
I feel very strongly that San Francisco is going to win their division.
I feel very strongly New Orleans is going to win their division.
I feel very strongly.
Green Bay and Minnesota will both make the playoffs.
There is a division in the NFL, though, that I think could flip.
And I like Baltimore a lot, and Cleveland is a circus.
But if you start looking at what's going to happen here, keep your eye on Cleveland.
Cleveland now is going to face in the next eight weeks a series of backup quarterbacks.
This defensive line for Cleveland is the strength of the team.
They're going to face a backup with Denver, a Josh Allen less than 20 starts, a backup in Pittsburgh, a backup in Miami, a backup in Pittsburgh, a backup in Cincinnati, a rookie in Kyle Allen, young quarterback Lamar, and a rookie with Cincinnati.
That defensive line is going to have a heyday.
Baker doesn't have to be great, and they get Kareem Hunt.
Conversely, and they're two and five right now, right, conversely, Baltimore, the schedule gets much tougher.
And we know this to be true.
The NFL has decided post- Thanksgiving, not in September and October.
I like Baltimore, but if you look at the next games coming up,
they're facing very, very interesting defensive fronts, New England's defense,
then Houston.
And, you know, so just think about this.
They go up against Brady and the Deshaun Watson and Jared Goff and then Jimmy G.
Baker beat him the first time.
And there's a lot of defenses in here.
I think Baltimore is a little overvalued.
I think Cleveland is a little undervalued, and I think there's a real possibility here
that 5 and 2 Baltimore and 2 and 5 Cleveland in a month are tied, and in eight weeks,
it comes down to that Baltimore game and Cleveland game in Cleveland.
I think the division will come down to that game.
I really, really do.
It looks crazy today.
But most of these divisions, I have a real strong feeling about New England winning
theirs, the Saints winning theirs.
I think Kansas
City, when Mahomes come back, they're going to go in a nice
streak and win theirs.
But I think this division could be the flip division
where what you see is
not what you're going to get. And you know,
I love to bang on Cleveland, and you know
how much I like Lamar and Baltimore.
But there's a little fool's
gold now with Baltimore, and Cleveland
is not this bad.
They're just simply not.
Coming up next, Rich Orrenberger
is fantastic. Former
Patriot Offensive lineman. What is that practice for New England been like this week?
His thoughts on Baker as well. Battling with the media. Don't go anywhere. We just have a pack show today.
We're not even halfway through it. Last night, a blown call changed a game. This morning,

Life becomes about wins and losses.
Steve Burns, Dustin Ross,

I'm bringing you conversations about all kinds of stuff.
Like being an internet famous referee.
We're in the middle of a game.
This linebacker, this linebacker walks up to me.
He goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her.
What?
Time out.
Quarterback on office blue with 42.
A rep.
My mom, I'm a one.
you to wave at her. What? Where's he at? Hey, Ms. Parker.

point game is about defying the odds. Like LeBron heading into the playoffs without Luca and
Austin Reed. And finding ways to win no matter what. He's the smartest player to ever play
the game. His IQ is at a level that we've never seen before. And he's
knows. Without Luca and Austin
Reeves, I got to manipulate the game.
We get a player's perspective
on the challenges of the playoffs.
I think Joker's going to be exhausted
this series because when they don't
have Rudy in the lineup, he has to
really guard guys like Nas Reid.
He has to guard Julius Randall. And then
he has to give us everything he gives us on the
night-to-night basis on offense.
And when IT's friends stop by, like Quentin Richardson,
we dive into some playoff history too.
Steve Nass would get that
thing. That man, hell get the flying.
he running up the court, licking his fingers, why he got the ball.
Like, after you go through a training camp with that, Isaiah, you figure it out real quick.
Get your ass up and down the court, and you're going to get the ball.

Three great conference matchups coming your way tomorrow on Fox.
It all kicks off with Big Noon Saturday as Nebraska takes on Purdue.
Then it's two Pac-12 showdowns as Washington Battles Number 9, Utah, followed by
seventh ranked Oregon, squaring off with USC, all on Fox and the Fox Sports.
By the way, it's a crappy weekend for college football.
We have the two games I'm going to watch.
Washington, Utah, take the Huskies to upset them, and I'm going to take USC to upset Oregon.
It's not a good day at college football.
Florida, George is good.
Then it's a bunch of nonsense.
We have the two of the games that are really, really going to be good.
In Seattle, in L.A., I'm taking the Huskies and the Trojans.
Not that I don't like Oregon, but I don't trust their defense.
Rich Ornberger was drafted by the New England Patriots.
I love bringing them on our show.
He does the loose cannons down in San Diego, very popular show.
He's on Fox Sports Radio on the weekend, former NFL offensive lineman.
So here goes New England into a very big game week.
It's the big game.
You've been in these weeks.
But this is a little different because of Lamar Jackson, isn't it?
Oh, it's completely different because of Lamar Jackson.
I'll start from the start.
Come November, we got the speech every year about how the season changes.
You have the speech about the preseason.
You had the speech about how the regular season everything ramps up.
And then come November, when everybody's starting to think about their Thanksgiving plans,
the NFL football season ramps up again.
And Bill was very, very sensitive to this.
So it didn't matter who the opponent was.
Once you hit November, this is the point in the season where you really have to turn it on.
And then obviously the postseason after that.
Lamar Jackson is a problem.
And what I mean that is, I mean, think about, think about,
the military schools in college.
It's a problem when you have to plan for one of these triple option offenses.
You have one week.
They're so unique.
You can't do this ahead of time.
You have other opponents.
Those are other potential losses on your schedule before you reach this triple option offense.
So you only have a week to prepare.
And it's so different.
And that's what the Baltimore Ravens have right now with Lamar Jackson.
It is so unique.
It is so different from any other offense you're going to see on your scale.
schedule. And only having a week to prepare is such a liability for a defense. And so really what
it comes down to is you have to stop Baltimore at what they do the best and hope that he doesn't make
deep throws, sideline throws, and leave the rest up to his arm. Yeah, take Mark Ingram out and
cross your fingers. They got big tight ends and they hit on some of those. But I do believe that's
kind of the game. Stop Mark and just say, listen, if Lamar beats us on the edge running, there's nothing
we can do about it. Because by the way, it's very interesting. Think about this. In the
NFC, most of the good teams have guys who can run but don't. Breeze, Garapolo, DAC, the AFC,
you're going to have to face either Mahomes who moves, Lamar who moves, Josh Allen who moves,
Gardner Mincha who moves, all the quarterbacks run. So this is your first real test. Oh,
this is what it's like, guys, for the rest of the season. We're going to have to meet guys like this
because the AFC outside of Brady, Rich, it's all moving guys. Oh, I know. And,
And the really funny thing is I do agree this is a big first test, but there was a pre-exam in the bills.
And that was a close game you'll remember because Josh Allen, while I think he's better suited to be an hback or a tight end in an offense, he's not as good of a quarterback.
And I mean a passer as some of these other guys you just mentioned.
It's still a dual threat quarterback.
He can still hurt you downfield improvising.
And he's a good enough athlete and big and strong enough to hold up against.
to rush and make you pay.
So they had a pre-exam.
But Lamar Jackson, this is a Ferrari right now they're going against,
and he's got the keys to the kingdom in Baltimore.
Let's go to something that this week, Joy and I were struck by how many,
and I've said this about my White House and my pro teams.
Leaks tell me people are covering their butt,
that whether you like a president or a team,
no leaks means everybody's on the same page.
When you get leaks politically or leaks in a sports franchise,
Clippers, by the way, get no leaks.
Credit Chris Paul, Chris Paul, no leaks.
Acquired Paul George, no leaks.
Got Kauai, no leaks.
Lakers, every 15 minutes there's a leak.
That means Magic Polinka, house divided.
Jets, rumors everywhere.
Why doesn't New England signs Muhammad Sanu?
Crickets.
What's the secret for Bill?
So this is just a rumor, but I think it makes,
sense because if you want to find a rat, you just basically make a, it's so simple, you take a sheet
of paper and you write down all of your potential leaks names. And then you feed each rat,
not rat, right, but each assistant or whoever in your organization, a little piece of information.
And whatever hits the news, you know who's responsible for it. It's as easy as just making a list.
I told this guy this. I told, you know, Coach A, we're trading out.
I told Coach B were trading Brady.
I told Coach C were targeting Mohammed Sanoo.
And guess what?
News breaks two days later.
You know exactly who to come to.
You know exactly who to snuff out after the leak comes out.
And that was the rumor in New England?
Well, that was the rumor.
I don't know.
I can't substantiate it.
But you can't substantiate a lot because, again, things don't get out of it.
It's the way it works.
Let's talk about OBJ came out and supported his quarterback this week.
I'm not a Baker guy.
I think he's talented.
He's not my personality prototype to be a quarterback.
What did you make of him and the Baker and the Tony Grossey,
the reporter and the going back and forth?
And what did you make all that stuff?
I didn't like it.
You know, look, I mean, it's some fortunate reality of playing quarterback in this league.
You are going to be held to a different standard than the rest of the players.
And I know he is who he is.
And I know he's an emotional guy.
And it's passionate, you know, winning.
fits or whatever he wrote in the follow-up tweet.
But the deal is this.
I don't want to walk into surgery with a guy who's losing his mind in, you know, in crisis.
I want my surgeon to have a deft hand.
I want the guy who's heading up the operation to see composed.
When these firefighters who are fighting wildfires head into danger, they're not losing
their minds.
They have a plan.
They're working their plan.
They're staying on a script.
the most composed person wins in crisis.
Right now the Browns are facing crisis,
and he seems erratic.
It's not what I want to see in leadership,
and it's really what's been presented
over the course of this season so far.
Yeah, I don't blame him for all of it, though.
I do think Freddie Kitchens,
I had an assistant coach in the NFL tell me this week.
Situationally, when you watch them on film,
they're just calling plays.
It's not really head coaching.
Freddie Kitchens is just calling plays.
They look lost situationally.
And if you look at their penalties,
you can make the argument that what the coach told me is largely what we're seeing is,
they got a coach that's bail in water.
He's just not ready to be a head coach.
He's a coach.
But, you know, you've been in this league.
Half the coordinators, he was never a coordinator.
Half the coordinators, they whiff at this thing.
No, no question.
I mean, it's a very difficult job to do.
Here's Freddie Kitchens, a guy who I like,
a guy who have a tremendous amount of respect for.
And he did something.
at the podium when he was asked about situational awareness and things at the end of one of the
games earlier this season, it resulted in a loss.
And you could argue there were moments where the head coaching decisions gave the game away.
And he said, I'm going to make mistakes and I'm learning on the run, something to that effect.
I'm paraphrasing for him.
But you cannot hear that.
Go back to the surgeon.
Do you want somebody post-op to be telling you about all their mistakes?
I mean, if I'm going to have a shoulder surgery, do I want a guy going, yeah, I'll tell you,
But sort of screwed up in a couple of spots.
We'll see.
You need to be certain.
Look, a head coach like a politician, you mentioned a White House, whatever.
You want a crafted orator.
You want someone who, even when it's all going wrong, makes you feel right.
And Freddie Kitchens needs to learn that in a hurry.
Two quarterbacks we watched last night.
Let's start with Kyler Murray.
That's interesting, right?
He throws baseball background.
he throws a beautiful ball.
He may throw the tightest spiral in the league.
What do you make of him?
I really like him a lot.
I liked them pre-draft.
I didn't like some of the press that he did.
It seemed like he was still making the decision
all the way up until the decision
whether or not he wanted to play football,
but it's clear he wants to be out there
and he's dangerous in all the ways
you want a quarterback to be.
You know, it's funny, we're just talking about Lamar Jackson.
I see a lot of the same traits.
Now, I think Kyler Murray throws a better football.
Yes, he does.
And he's a more accurate passer.
But a dual threat quarterback in this league is a soothing bomb for everything.
It's like the vitamin C of the NFL.
It's a cure-all.
If you want to get good fast, draft you a dual-threat quarterback.
Rich, I always say they all work.
They just don't last.
Mobile quarterbacks all work.
The really good ones.
RG3 just worked for a year.
Right.
Mike Vic worked for four.
Yep.
But the idea they don't work.
Oh, no, they do.
Can work for a long time.
Then you get beat up.
Yes. Okay, so a dual threat quarterback is leaving his prime at 30. A pocket passer is entering his prime at 30.
Great point. So when Tom Brady, if you look at all of his pro bowls, the majority of them are post 30 because you really find out who you are. You mature in offense. And of course, he stayed in the same offense with only two coordinators, Billy O'Brien and Josh McDaniels during his tenure there in New England. He was able to mature and become the player prominence.
we see him today. A lot of that has been done post-30. You could say the same thing about
Drew Brees. But a lot of these mobile quarterbacks, they're leaving their prime at 30.
Yeah, they've gotten dinged. Cam Newton, Andrew Luck, Carson Wentz is heading in that direction.
We'll see how long it lasts with Russell Wilson, but some of the best may already be behind him.
Jimmy Garoppolo, I'm just joking all day, quarterback face. My wife said, that looks like a franchise quarterback
guy. But boy, he plays with confidence, doesn't he? Oh, he certainly does.
He certainly does. And I'll tell you, the knock on him right now is too many turnovers.
And a lot of people are referring to him as a game manager. And I'll get caught up in that.
And people will think I'm being negative about Jimmy Garoppolo. I need to see if he's an elite quarterback.
But what I certainly know is he has elite football intelligence. He's not going to give away games.
He's a winner. It's a short sample size. But he's a winner. I really love his accuracy.
I love his command of the huddle.
I love how these guys fight for him.
I love when they're down in the red zone,
how confident you feel about the 49ers' chances of scoring,
whether it's on the ground or through the air.
Yeah, no, no, he plays with, John was saying this,
John Goulan, or pre-meeting.
He plays cocky on third down.
Yes.
He's like, no, it's my team.
All right.
And it's like, Derek Jeter used to always say,
baseball is long, going to slumps.
I don't want a lot of negative people around me.
I don't want to be, I don't want, like,
I want to be optimistic going to the play.
I don't want negative thoughts.
Arod was an overthinker.
I'm going to have a therapist.
I want to talk.
Jeter's like, I want to hit the ball hard.
Let's go have a steak.
I mean, it's like there is something to be said about confidence in big moments.
Jimmy G. plays confident football.
Again, you know, you talked about composure earlier and turning to the calm,
deft hand in the room when crisis comes.
I mean, short sample size with Baker Mayfield as well.
Who do you want on third and long, Garoppolo or Mayfield right now?
Who do you want in the red zone when you absolutely have to have it,
Gropolo or Mayfield?
You may argue that.
at Mayfield may have had more success in situations.
I don't have the stats in front of me.
But I look at Garoppolo and I see a steady, deft hand,
somebody who seems like he's got the leadership I need in crisis.
And when you have that confidence and then you back it up with good play
and a winning record like they have in San Francisco right now,
that it just bodes so well for their future.
And Kyle Shanahan, he is coaching his tail off right now.
Finally, I was totally wrong on this.
Raiders are a fun watch.
Start looking at their schedule.
It's the toughest in the league.
They had to go to London Bears at Indy, KC, at Green Bay, at Houston, outside of Green Bay.
They're in all these games.
This could have just unraveled teams.
They're buying into Gruden.
Offensively, they've got put, they've got a group of guys.
I think they're well coached.
I think they built this team right.
They drafted offensive linemen.
They paid for offensive linemen.
a quarterback who if you surround them with more talent on the edges could end up being a lead
in this league. You have a potential all-pro player and Josh Jacobs. Good job on that MAC
trade, making that number one pick, or it should say, first round pick. He's been great. And by the
way, that Darren Waller, they got it tied in from Baltimore. Does he leave the NFL in receptions?
He did a couple of weeks ago. He's been a monster. I mean, and that's what good offenses do with
maybe marginal players or players that sort of are unknown. They turn them into stars. It happens
in New England all the time.
George Kittle with the 49ers and a great offense is a star.
Cooper Cup.
Who knows what he would be if he was playing for the Bengals,
but in this Rams offense, we believe he's a star.
So yeah, it's building in the right direction.
They've had some really tough losses handed to them.
If they improve this defense, look out.
The Raiders, when they head to Vegas, they may have a squad.
Yeah, great seeing you.
Rich Arnberger, if you're just turning in on radio.
He played for the Patriots, NFL, drafted by No.
New England, big weekend for the NFL.
Listen to him on our archive if you just got into your car and didn't hear his breakdown of that game.
Obviously, he works in San Diego.
And to give your radio show a shout-out on a 1360 extra?
Yeah, it's actually a 1360 down in San Diego Fox Sports Affiliate.
It's the loose cannons.
We do it every day, 3 to 6 p.m.
Good stuff.
Drive time.
That's what you put the talented guys.
Rich, it's great seeing you.
Great seeing you.
Thanks.
All right, Joy, with the news.
No, no, no, no.
Turn on the news.
This is the herd line news.
Lamar Jackson is facing off against Tom Brady on Sunday.
On Thursday, Jackson felt that it was necessary to make one thing clear
when it comes to the NFL goat debate.
Oh, here we go.
Do we have it?
Do we have this?
Tom Brady definitely the one at the top.
He's the goat of all.
Definitely, definitely.
I've got six footballers.
He definitely goat.
Definitely.
He's just so cool.
In the pocket, he dropped bad.
He looks so smooth.
Like, he's not even dropping.
It looks like he really just standing there and just wait, you know, stuff that happened.
Just pit the defense apart.
A great quarterman, man.
Well, Ravens Earl Thomas is also very excited about the opportunity to play against Tom Brady again.
He said it's a great challenge.
You always want to go against a champion.
It's champion on champion.
I'm excited to go against him.
I'm going to be able to tell my son, yo, this is what your pops did.
I can't wait to open a cup of crown and talk to my son about it.
This is part of the story, part of the legacy.
So, this is great.
Ravens are taking a little page out of the Patriots playbook there.
Look how amazing.
One day I'm going to tell my son, I played against him,
champion on champion.
I find the Ravens incredibly likable.
Even though I think they're going to take a little turn here,
this is how you run an organization.
I always had a respect for the Ravens.
Obviously, I'm a Steelers fan from Pittsburgh, so it's a huge rivalry.
But you respected them.
I respect them, yes.
And Lamar Jackson is super fun to watch.
They're a fun team and competitive
and you never know what you're going to see next.
And this is going to be the game of the weekend.
But it is funny that they are,
they're just doing it right back to them.
Like, no, you're the greatest.
It's all about playing against the greatest.
He's the goat.
It's very good.
I never thought I would say this.
No bulletin board material for the Patriots.
I never thought I would say this.
They'll be this NFL team.
And they'll mostly just run the football.
And they'll be fascinating.
You know, I mean, usually it's like, oh, Rams are throwing it, and the Niners, the Ravens, I mean, I don't like watching college football teams that don't pass.
I can't take the last team I watched that was run-oriented that I was like, oh, I love watching them play.
But I feel like it's because Lamar has, and to the Ravens credit, and Lamar's credit, has developed the ability to also throw the ball at us in a second's notice.
So he has, she truly is a dual threat, which we weren't sure was going to develop last year.
He's also.
And he's the fastest guy in the field.
Yeah, I mean, this really comes down to me
is I like watching Lamar move.
I think it's, I just,
this reminds me of a thinner Michael Vick.
When Michael would take off, you're like,
oh, wait, he's not fast for a quarterback.
He may be Atlanta's fastest player.
Yes.
Like, that's just an incredible rarity.
Well, Carson Wentz is not afraid of giving the Bears
defense bulletin board material.
They're hosting Filio Mac and the Bears this Sunday.
He doesn't seem too concerned about facing Palo Mac.
Oh, Lord.
Anytime you've got a playmaker like Khalil on the other side and the way you can change a game pretty quickly.
I mean, you're aware.
You know, you're always aware.
By no means, are you afraid, but you're aware, you know?
And so offensively, you're going to put yourself in the best position to be cognizant of that and still do, you know, what we do best.
And so I think we're all going to be aware of where he's at when he's moving around and all those things.
Kelsey up front does a great job making the calls and then doing that stuff.
So, again, we're going to be aware of but not effective.
You're afraid, be very afraid.
You know I like them.
Well, Macaley has one sack in the last three games.
You know I like Philadelphia.
You love Philadelphia.
Well, I'm very boring in life.
You have a much more exciting life than me.
I am very boring, and I like structure.
My wife's an artist and a designer, and my daughter's creative, and you are creative.
I am not.
So I like structure, and I love Philadelphia's structure.
It just needs a little wiggle and speed up.
on the outside. They need a little, they need Deshawn Jackson back. They need a little more balance.
Just a little, just a little pop on the outside. Well, there's more point favorites this weekend at home, according to Fox Fed. I actually kind of like the Bears to cover. I don't think that the Bears defense is going to stay that, especially Clayle Mac, stay that stagnant.
I can't hate to watch. My wife's not home for this game. I mean, I love her and everything, but, you know, I like the weekends being me watching football. I'm just going to dig into this game.
game. I'm going to get the dogs next to me. Chicken nachos. It's going to be a great week.
What do you put on your chicken nachos?
Chicken and cheese?
Finally, you'll like this story. I think the Jets were in the news this week, obviously, for trying to trade Jamal Adams. He's not going anywhere, but he is still upset with the team.
And Hall of Fame coach Tony Dungey, who we like very much. So the Jets made a mistake allowing Adams to catch wind of the potential trade.
Yeah. I don't understand some of these teams. I mean, the Patriots, they've been on top.
for years and years, you're never going to hear anything out of their organization about,
hey, we took a phone call on this guy.
You know, he mentioned them all at him, says, hey, you know, they don't take phone calls on Tom Brady.
We don't know that.
That's the issue more than anything, not what they're doing, but the fact that nothing comes
out of their organization.
And to me, that was the biggest mistake.
We'll ever let it out, hey, yeah, we talked to this team or this team calls.
You don't even have to go into that.
That's nobody else's business with yours.
Thank you, Tony. Thank you, Tony Dungy, a man of reason. Thank you.
No reason for it. Nothing gets out with the Clippers.
And I mean, Kauai, George, Paul, Blake, nothing gets out with well-run teams.
It's really just, it's not hard.
And it's not hard to have an honest conversation with your players either.
They're grown businessmen who understand it's a business.
Just keep it real. Don't make outlandish promises that you not only have no intention of keeping.
You literally cannot keep. It's a business.
Joy with the news.
Well, that's the news.
And thanks for stopping by.

And we're still chasing it.
And we don't know when we've done enough.
Because people scoreboard watch.

Former NFL defensive back Stanford Route drafted by the Raiders,
played at Houston as well, came out and ran a 42740,
one of the fastest combine times of all times.
So I got to ask you, I'm watching the game last night.
Stanford, let's start with Kyler Murray.
What do you make of it?
Man, if you play man to man against a team like Arizona and you turn your back,
I think Kyler's going to work in this league.
Yeah, man, the throw that he made late in the game to the tight end,
I forget his name, but it went for a touchdown.
Richard Sherman wound up missing the tackle for about 60, 70 yards.
That was an absolute phenomenal throw that he made because it was right over the shoulder,
right over the hands of the defense.
And you could tell that Kyle Murray has always been an.
accurate passer. Even dating back to his days back in high school with Allen Texas. He's a baseball guy.
He throws a great ball. Yes, exactly. So I think that once he starts to get to the point where he can
understand the speed of the game, reading defense is better, then I think he's going to be a little bit
more consistent. And you're actually going to see Arizona being able to string together some Ws rather
than some tough losses, but great stats. What they've done so far, Stanford is they'll have,
they're very good on the script, and then they'll have lulls. They're very good in the first half.
They've struggled. So again, Kyler's very good on the script.
He does his prep comes in.
Then there's new defenses.
He pulls back.
But last night, after that, he was very good early and then very good later.
So I like what I saw.
You don't buy Jimmy G. yet.
Not yet because we all got to look at it from the standpoint of he still does not have
that many games under his belt.
And I think that Kyle Shanahan knows that.
So if you notice whenever San Francisco has the ball, it still is a little bit of the bells
and whistles.
A lot of it is predicated on the.
run and they're using the run to set up the past.
And I think with Kyle Shanahan, because he's an offensive guru, we all can see that even
going back to seeing what he did with Matt Ryan in Atlanta the year that he won the MVP,
because of that, he's going to make sure that he does not put the game in the hands of Jimmy
G rather than just simply letting the defense, the pass rush, Nick Bosa, Richard Sherman,
those guys in the back end, let them do the dirty work.
We got Jimmy G to come in here, hand the ball off to Matt Breeder, and now he's got Emmanuel
Sanders to throw to.
along with the tight-in kiddo.
So they're making things easier on him.
That way he doesn't have the onus all on his shoulders.
Which Kyler Murray right now does for Arizona.
I got to ask you, New England secondary, best I've seen.
Now you tell me they play Lamar this weekend.
What does New England secondary do as a former DB that impresses you?
Is it discipline?
Is it talent?
I think that New England as a whole, it is phenomenal how Bill Belichick is able to acquire,
players who may not be marquee names and actually make them play like world beaters all together
cohesively within the same unit when you look at new england secondary you got devon mccordy
obviously he's a pro bowl he made the pro bowl as a rookie playing corner back in 2010 and then when
you see stephan gilmore who in my opinion he's the best cornerback in the league right now so you got two
great players and then when you look at the van oys obviously you know they have uh jamie
collins he's a stud linebacker very athletic and then you see uh the other linebacker out of alabama i
get his name. High Tower. He's a great player as well, but when you see how they play as a unit,
when you see the other McCordie brother, when you see Harmon, when you see Chung, not necessarily
marquee names, but they're all collectively right now playing is one of the best defenses that this
league has ever seen, especially in the secondary because the way they're picking the ball off
at such a high rate, and it seems like the way that they understand what play is about to come.
Like Sam Donald said, he was seeing ghost out there. I think it's phenomenal, and they just simply
play as a unit, they do what's asked of them, and they hold everybody accountable.
Lamar Jackson's interesting.
He, when you face a running quarterback, did you like it as a DB or did it drive you nuts?
Facing a running quarterback is always a tricky situation because you know that you have to
stay on your man that much longer because he can extend plays.
And then also, whenever he decides to tuck it and run, he's like another running back on
the field, so now you've got to come up there.
you got to be physical in the run game.
I think that New England is going to take away Baltimore's run game.
Mark Ingram out.
Yes, and I think they're going to force Lamar Jackson to be a precision pocket passer.
And because of the way New England runs their scheme on defense, they're going to be
gap sound.
They're going to maintain gap integrity.
That way they don't allow Lamar Jackson to have those running lanes.
They're going to make him stay in the pocket.
I remember back when I was playing, Rob Ryan used to always say that certain
quarterbacks you want to get them off the spot, certain quarterbacks, you want to
want to keep them inside the pocket. A guy like Lamar Jackson, a Kyle Murray, and Aaron Rogers,
guys that are mobile, you want to actually keep them in the pocket and make them throw off the
spot. I'm sorry, on the spot, statue quarterbacks like a Tom Brady, a paid man.
Push him away. You want to get them out of the pocket. You want to pressure them from up the middle.
That way they can't step up into their throes. That way they get out the pocket. And that's where
they're like a fish out of water. You played seven years with the Raiders. I thought they were going
to be an absolute tire fire this year. They're on. So did I. I just thought this is.
is a mess. They're a lame duck, the franchise.
Stanford route joining us. I watch them.
They're the shock of the league.
Yeah.
Is it Gruden?
I think it's everybody, if you want my personal opinion,
because the greatest thing that I see in sports that I love to watch
is people going from being counted out to count it on.
And you look at Tyrell Williams. He was expected to come in
and basically be second fiddle to Antonio Brown.
obviously Antonio Brown wasn't even there to start off the season.
And now Terrell Williams, every game that he's played for the Raiders this year, he scored a touchdown.
You look at the strike to Hunter Renfro.
Basically went split the defense.
I mean, the way he split secondary like that for that long touchdown, it almost kind of had remnants of Jerry Rice.
Now, obviously, he's no Jerry Rice, but that play kind of reminded me of such.
And I think with Derek Carr, he's able to settle down.
He's now leading the league in completion percentage.
And when you look at what the Raiders have had to go through, I think they were on the road
for 46 days.
What's your longest road trip?
Two weeks, three?
I think maybe two weeks at most.
That's a month?
Yes.
And that includes Europe.
Yes.
So when you look at how they had to go to Minnesota, they got blown out there.
They beat the Indianapolis Colts, albeit without a T.Y.
Hildon.
Then they go to London, which is a home game.
And dominate the bears.
It's not even in the same hemisphere as Oakland, California.
And then they go have the bioweed.
Then they go play the Green Bay Packers, Aaron Rogers.
we already know that they're a juggernaut of a team, great defense,
and their offense is finally starting to kind of come together,
and then they lose a heartbreaker to the Houston, Texas.
And I was there for that game, man,
if they just simply can corral Deshawn Watson,
they win the game, but it just goes to show Deshaun Watson,
he's just a magician out there, the way he's able to elude,
not a pass rush, but the way he's able to elude the grasp of a sack
is nothing short than amazing.
Yeah, Raiders are, you know, sometimes you're just wrong.
That was wrong on the Raiders.
By the way, Cleveland's going to win this weekend, right?
Baker Mayfield, right?
Odell Beckham, or do you think they unravel more?
40 seconds.
I think that they might have a little bit more of unraveling to do.
Simply because you got Freddie Kitchens, he's a rookie head coach,
the guy who was just coaching running backs just last year.
And I think that he does not know how yet in this league to manage all of those personalities.
And I think with Baker Mayfield, he's got to learn that if you want to do the commercials,
you want to get all the endorsements, you be in the first overall.
pick of the draft, you have to deal with the scrutiny that comes with your team not playing well.
A lot of heat.
That comes with playing quarterback in the National Football League.
And he hasn't right now.
He's struggling.
Yeah.
By the way, Tom Brady didn't do a big commercial till Visa included his old lineman.
Baker said, I'm going to do six commercials.
This is the downside.
You become a star before you were a star.
Stanford route.
Great stuff.
I love having you.
We're tight on time.
Hour three's coming up.
Guys got a million thoughts on the NFL.
It's The Hurt.
Be sure to catch live editions of the HARD.
weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific.
Terry Bradshaw is adding a bonus contest this Sunday to celebrate the Texans Jaguars game in London,
which kicks off at 9.30 a.m. Eastern on NFL network. One of the questions is which team will win
and by how many points. Colin, who are you taking? Texans win. They dominate Jacksonville.
Know how Indie used to dominate. This is a weird division. Indie always dominated Tennessee
and Houston owns Jacksonville. Deshawn's never lost to him. 26, 20.
22 Texans.
By the way, Deshawn Watson's the first quarterback through eight weeks to ever have five rushing touchdowns and 15 passing touchdowns.
That's pretty good.
Guys, stop using your girlfriend shampoo.
Go to Walmart and get dove men plus care.
Dove men plus care for your own hair.
T.J. Hushman Zada.
Let's bring him on over a decade in the NFL and a Friday, baby.
Bring it in.
We got a great Friday coming.
All right.
Very handsome.
Jimmy Garoppolo.
You know, everybody's making fun.
I came in this morning, and I said,
quarterback face, NFL scouts use that.
Carson Palmer, quarterback face.
If you look like Carson Palmer your whole life,
you walk into rooms, you have confidence.
Jimmy G.
It's crazy, man.
Quick story.
So last night, my wife really doesn't watch a lot of football.
So I'm in the kitchen.
Excuse me, I'm in the kitchen.
And she's like, who is this?
I'm like, who?
She's like, the guy on TV.
He's really cute.
I was like, I don't know.
So I look.
I was like, oh, that's the quarterback.
Man, he's really cute.
Just last night.
True story.
There's something to be said about confidence.
Do you like his game?
He's a good.
He's 16 and 2.
Yeah, at some point.
What is there not to like?
I've always said this.
You want your quarterback to do two things,
win and lead.
And he's 16 and 2.
And you can say, oh, he has this.
he has that, there's people that have more, and they're not, they're not 16 and two.
They got a bunch of young receivers. Both tackles are hurt. And Matt Breda was undrafted. Don't tell
me, they have talent. Most of it's on the D side in terms of elite first round guys.
Most of their offensive guys are, I mean, they've got a lot of guys on offense.
He's at, you look at the throw last night on a deep out route to Emmanuel Sanders.
Patrick Peterson is looking for the ball. Emmanuel Sanders has just caught the ball. And so the
way he threw with anticipation. It was a great throw. He wasn't even out his break yet.
It was a perfect throw. He's winning and he's lead. That's all you want. He made throws when
he needed to make them. The defense didn't play great last night. So Jimmy G was like, okay,
I got y'all. Yeah. And they didn't have a ton of running game last night. Last night was
the night's like, all right, Jimmy, this is your night. And he did it. And at some point,
16 and 2. Kyler Murray also, good feet throws a beautiful bowl. He may throw the tightest spiral in the league.
it works for me.
I hate their own line, but it works for me.
Tyler Murray is good.
He's good.
But when you're drafted number one, you should be.
Like, when you're drafted number one, oh, does he surprise me?
No, he was the first pick of the draft.
You expect him to be successful.
Now, there's bus, but you expect him to be successful.
And the thing is, he doesn't have a dominant go-to receiver.
He does not have a stout offensive line in front of him.
It's bad on the line.
With what he's doing, what he's playing with is great.
Who's his best receiver, Larry Fitzgerald.
And Larry Fitzgerald is what?
Is this 15th, 16th year maybe?
Yeah.
And so you give him some weapons and you get some guys up front.
What could he do?
It can be real scary.
So I believe this weekend, we know that post- Thanksgiving generally decides the league.
A lot of quarterbacks look good in September.
Everybody's healthy.
Then now guys are beat up.
you'll find out your roster's depth, what quarterbacks.
Now everybody's got film on everybody.
I look at Cleveland though and I say, okay, I love their defensive front.
There's not a lot I love about their team.
I love their defensive front.
Six of the next eight weeks, Cleveland faces a backup quarterback.
The other two weeks, they face a rookie quarterback.
I think Cleveland's going to go on a role.
I know they're young.
I know I don't love their head coach.
Have you ever been on a team or seen a team that was amazing?
mess for two months and then and then just change teams or am I just being totally unrealistic?
No, you're being very, you look at the Brown schedule at worst they're going to go seven and two.
That's what it feels.
At worst and the two losses could be Buffalo and Baltimore.
That's what I think.
They could possibly finish the season nine and oh when you look at it.
You play Cincinnati.
You play Pittsburgh twice.
You're playing Denver this weekend.
You play Cincinnati twice?
You play the Miami Dolphins.
Cincinnati and Pittsburgh twice.
And so if you look at their schedule, the worst case scenario is 7 and 2.
Best case 9 and 0.
And 9 and 0 is very, very realistic because you play Buffalo,
who's not strong offensively and Cleveland is very strong defensively.
So here's the question, though, the psychology of it.
A lot of Baker's battling media and Freddie Kitchens getting beat up.
Go back to your career.
When you're in a losing locker room, are there guys in this room?
You lose guys.
Or do you think everybody's still in?
Because you know, you go two and five in this league.
TJ, there's some guys that don't love football.
Frustration kicks in.
And that interview that Baker, he addressed the guy.
Come on, Tony.
Like, that was frustration.
They're losing.
But watch how this changes in the next few weeks now.
They'll be five and five, six and five.
And so now those press conferences, it's going to be a different energy.
Yeah, because we're winning now.
Now, two and five, does a locker room change?
It depends.
Now, if you can win two or three games in a row, now you start to be very optimistic looking at the schedule like,
oh, we got a chance here.
And they're looking at that schedule.
And if they start winning these games, the entire tone and his attitude is going to completely change.
Yeah, it really does in the NFL.
We owe us three words key to the NFL.
Just wins Sunday.
Changes everything.
Coaches are happier.
You've driven to the stadium when your team's bad.
It's an awful life.
Football practice is not fun.
No, you're just like, man, I can't wait.
Basketball practice is fun.
I can't wait until this is over.
The worst part is when you've, and I've been on some losing teams,
is when you're losing and you get down by double digits.
Early.
Early in the game, you're like, oh, here we go again.
It could be the first quarter.
It'd be 10-0.
and you're better than his team.
So, ah, here we go again.
And so if they could avoid that, avoid, they have good players.
They got a good team.
Yeah.
Their coach, this is foreign territory for their coach.
He's never been a head coach.
He wasn't an officer coordinator until an interim tag got put on him last year.
This is for him.
They have too many weapons.
He didn't really know how to navigate through that.
That's key.
They should have an idea of now how they get Kareem Hunt back, another weapon.
So hopefully he's learned from this first half of the season and they can navigate.
through this and finish strong.
Okay.
You have been, you know Baltimore.
You understand the organization.
And this is a, this is the biggest game in Baltimore in a long time.
I worry that Lamar Jackson's a kid and New England's defense is smart and complex.
It's a, it's a defense, frankly, with a lot of 29-year-olds.
It's an older defense.
How do you think Lamar does?
What's big week in Baltimore like?
What's it like there in Baltimore?
Practiced hardball, everybody.
Harbaugh, when I played with the Ravens, it was very different.
Like, he makes sure guys are fresh.
He takes the opinion of his players.
Like, that's one thing that I know that, like,
I really, really enjoyed playing for hardball.
He was not, he was a players coach,
but he was not taking your BS.
And so you knew that he demanded that respect and guys gave it to him.
But he gave you a.
Yes, he, he tried.
treated you like an adult.
They were the first team when I got there.
Like Wednesday was a walkthrough.
And I was like, huh?
We're walking through?
Like guys were getting IVs in Cincinnati in practice on a Wednesday.
And here we are in Baltimore walking through.
So that was a shock to me.
And when I think of Baltimore, when you think of the Baltimore Ravens, I always think of one thing, defense.
And it's completely reversed this year.
I don't love their defense this year.
They're not very good defensively.
They don't put a ton of pressure on.
Now, Marcus Peters helps.
This is what I think the game is.
I think we're spending so much time talking about Lamar against the Patriots defense all week.
What we're not talking about is Muhammad Sanoo, and let's talk about him.
He is a middle of the field possession guy.
I think New England's offense keeps Lamar off the field.
I think they six-yard it to death.
I think Sanoo gives them the identity.
He's got a little gronk, big middle of the field.
But the Ravens know.
New England is throw the ball in between the hashes.
That's what they do.
They know that.
And so you got Jimmy, you got Jimmy Smith, you got Marcus Peters, you got Marlon Humphrey.
The Ravens have some D-Bs.
They can man up and say, you just have to beat us because you got Earl Thomas in the back end.
And so their secondary is stout, very good.
So they can man up New England and say, what you can't run by us.
What are you going to do?
We're going to sit in the middle.
We're going to force you to throw the ball outside the hatches, outside the numbers.
And so if they can do that, you got a ball.
Okay. I got to ask you this week, it surprised Joy and I. We used the Clippers as an example.
They traded Chris Paul and Blake Griffin. Nobody knew until it happened. They acquired Paul George and Kauai.
It didn't make the newspapers until it happened. We were all shocked. The Jets had four different players on the rumor mill this week. Everything leaked.
And I said, we talked about this. As a player, I understand it's.
at business, but boy, if I was Jamal Adams, I'm your best player and you're shopping me,
do you think that can just completely unravel the Jets this point forward?
Unravel, it doesn't matter. They're not going to have a great season anyway. They've already
unraveled. I said this yesterday. If I'm Jamal Adams, like, that's a human emotion. You should
be hurt. It's okay. He's learned really quick now, huh? NFL's a business. Okay, so I'm going to
approach it as such. This is third year. He's played football.
his entire life because it's fun and now he's been introduced to the business side of football
and he didn't like it it hurt his feelings and that's okay if that's an emotion that you feel
and you want to say it i'm fine with it if i'm the jets you have to try to find a way to put
the toothpaste back in the tube and just say listen we are doing the team of disservice if we
don't take calls the people call about you we're not going to trade you they asked about
you you you have to do damage control because like you said he's their best player he's a young
player and you don't get better by letting good young players go. You don't. By the way, when did you
first learn it was a business? Oh man. Obviously, I wasn't in none of these guys situations, but I
remember going into my fourth year, going into my fourth year when I was playing, they could tender
you. And so you get original round tender, you get a first round tender, you get a second round tender.
And I hadn't played much up until that point. And Dennis Erickson had just got hired in San
Francisco. He was my college coach. I'm like, I'm out of here. I ain't playing for the Bengals. I'm
gone. And they slapped that tender on me. And San Francisco is like, oh, this is what it is. No.
And I was like, really, I got to stand Cincinnati another year. And I'm like, I haven't played.
Why aren't you guys, why are you guys tindering me? I haven't played. I haven't done anything.
And you're going to play on this tender. You're not playing at all. And you're just like, oh,
okay. But I just wanted to play. For me, it's guys like Jamal Adams, it's different than what I had to go
through. You wanted reps. I just wanted to play. And so once I, once I,
got to play. I didn't care where it was.
Exactly. I just wanted to rest.
You had more power in college. You could have transferred.
Yeah. You, you have, especially now.
Oh, God.
The team in basketball, a third of the team transfers every year.
It's great. If a coach can leave, why can't a player?
Why not?
T.J. Hushman's audit. It's great having you.
And Jason McIntyre.
Tomorrow's headlines today is coming up in 20 minutes.
Casper the most loved and trusted sleep company in the country.
Casper.com code heard 20% off. Joy with the news.
No. No. No.
Turn on the news.
This is the herd line news.
Well, there's been a lot of criticism, Baker Mayfield,
and his behavior with the reporters the past couple days.
Not great.
Odell was not happy about it and came to the defense of his quarterback yesterday.
That's very nice.
You can't sit here and say it's all on him.
You know what I mean?
We have to take a look at everything that's going on around him.
And, you know, and obviously he has to play better.
I have to play better.
We all need to do better.
You can't sit there and be like it's Baker's fault.
I feel like that's the easiest.
thing for us to do. And I've been in situations, you know, where one person's getting to blame
and the rest of the people are quiet, you know, just to kind of stay out of the fire. Like,
I'm going to jump in the fire with him. I'll be the first one. Some of these losses are on me. I need
to be in the right place, the right time. I need to be better. And that's what I plan to do for the rest
of the season. I like those hoodies. That's a good looking hoodie. It is. I'm not really a style guy.
Baker gave you a hoodie. Did he? Yeah, I think it said a undraftable. That's not.
That's not a. Yeah, yeah, those get him's a white hoodie.
They get stained.
That's a good-looking hoodie anyway.
Stained with what?
Chicken nachos.
Eating them all day tomorrow.
I'm so curious about these chicken nachos.
So what kind of cheese are we talking about here?
I do a mix.
I go get the bag over at Ralph.
So a mixed bag, a bunch of mozzarella.
Mexican blend's very, very good.
Monterellas good.
Chicken nachos and a little bit of just a...
So you don't slice it yourself?
The chicken?
No, the cheese.
Oh, God, no.
I get rotissory chicken and just cut it up
and just rotissory chicken
That's the move right there, though.
Green onions?
Not in my house, no.
A little bit of guac, baby guac.
You know what?
I may have that for dinner tonight.
Screw tomorrow.
I'm going to have it for dinner tonight.
So it's a mixture of shredded cheese.
Shredded cheese, rotissory chicken, nachos, and a little guack.
And maybe sometimes that, what's that chopped up tomato thing you get at the store?
Pico.
Pico de gallo, yes.
Yeah, that's it right there.
It's not bad.
I would toss a little sour cream on there.
That's dinner tonight.
And maybe a little green onion too.
It's not bad.
I like that O'Dell's supporting Baker.
Cam Newton will miss a six straight game this Sunday due to a foot injury.
Jacina Anderson is reporting that Cam will meet with a foot specialist,
Dr. Robert Anderson, in Green Bay, to further discuss the injury.
He was the Panthers orthopedist from 2000 to 2017.
Always with the Packers now.
Yes.
Ron Rivera said earlier in the week that Cam was still rehabbing.
Cam had said he was feeling good on October 27th,
per Joe Person of the Athletic.
He tweeted, most players with Liz Frank.
have surgery. Cam Newton tried to go the non-surgical route, but
you can't help but wonder if that might change.
This has always been a very kind of vague, fluid situation with Cam's injury,
and them saying that they were going to stick with Kyle Allen or reports that they're
sticking with Kyle Allen kind of inferred that Cam could be on his way back,
but it's like maybe right ready to come back, but they're sticking with Kyle Allen
means you have an option of whether you're going to stick with Kyle Allen or not.
Basically, to me, this means Cam's going to be out for the rest of the season.
Kevin, let me ask you.
So Cam's out for the season, if you're right.
Do you bring him back?
No, I don't think Cam is with the Panthers next year.
But I don't think that's a bad thing for the Panthers or for Cam.
Because I think Cam still has some left in the tank.
I think it might just be time for him to be in a new situation.
I think it would be interesting to see him with the Bears.
I think there's going to be a lot of movement with a lot of quarterbacks in the off season.
You have Nick Foles is probably going to land somewhere.
Cam Newton.
Teddy Bridgewater.
and then you have all these guys in the draft that people aren't really 100% on any of them.
Teddy Bridgewater's going to make some money.
And he should.
Yeah, Teddy B is going to make some money.
He should.
I hope he doesn't end up in Cincinnati.
I'd like to see Teddy Bridgewater in a situation where he's with a contender.
You know where he'd be great?
Tampa Bay.
Tampa Bay.
Mike Evans, that tight end.
Even Tennessee.
I think Tennessee will probably end up sticking with Ryan Tannehill.
But I think Teddy Bridge,
Bridgewater in Tennessee would be very interesting.
Bruce Ariens would stay.
Bruce Ariens would stay if he could have Teddy B.
Because Bruce has some health issues.
If you could get a grown-up, Teddy B, no drama.
Teddy B is the opposite of James.
And they have weapons in Tampa Bay.
Oh, no, no.
And by the way, this is their first offensive line they've had top 10 in years.
So now they have a decent line.
And he's the opposite of James.
Doesn't tell the deep ball.
You get no turnovers, though.
He's the opposite of James.
You don't get the big arm, but you get no turnovers.
He's going to get paid.
And I think whoever ends up with him,
If they're a contender that's right on the cusp, that's going to be a great situation.
We're going to have Cam Newton, Teddy Bridgewater, Nick Foles, like guys who have won big games all on the market.
And they're all, all of them fit somewhere.
Cam Newton, MVP played in a Super Bowl.
Nick Foles won a Super Bowl.
Teddy B.
Teddy B. has won more games than he's lost.
He got a better winning percentage than Kirk Cousins.
It's going to be very interesting.
Finally, we know the NBA is very into fashion, right?
NBA players are very into fashion.
The Rockets even have a red carpet now with a DJ.
Well, Greg Popovich, not so into fashion, but he is paying attention to what he wears.
He has recommended a rule change that he'd like to implement in the NBA.
I just wish we were in sweatsuits.
No serious.
I'm a big proponent of gym shoes and nice looking sweatsuits.
You don't have to worry about ties and coats and changing and dragging them.
and all that stuff around.
You know, I don't see baseball managers or football coaches running around anymore.
I think Hank Stram did that and some of the old Dallas coaches did that,
but they were classier than we are.
We don't have that kind of class.
I totally agree with them, by the way.
I've always thought it was strange.
I mean, they look nice, but I always thought it was strange that basketball coaches,
because they don't have to do that in college.
So it's strange to me that they have this rule.
Like, why wouldn't that?
And Popovich is 70.
I think he's just tired of wearing a suit.
And I'm with him.
You hate wearing suits.
Not only that, the NFL dress code for coaches is, they don't have one.
Bill Belichick wears a cut off hoodie.
It rolls at the end.
It's ridiculous.
But it's an outdoor sport.
So you can't really have a dress code.
So the baseball guys, you should wear whatever you need to.
You've seen that thing that Tom Brady puts on.
By the way, have you ever noticed how soccer coaches dress?
Warmups.
I'm fully with Bobovich on this one.
I don't, I mean, I understand like they look nice.
It's suits are nice.
But if you don't want to wear a suit, yeah, at leisure, you know.
Just have a nice San Antonio Spurs.
Yeah, maybe a little dressier than that.
That's a little sloppy.
I'm not for shorts.
But, no, I'm totally with them.
And I'm so glad that the football doesn't have that.
You remember Al Golden used to wear like the giant tucked in
bun up with the tie and the guy
that guy at San Francisco.
Was that Mike Nolan at San Francisco?
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, that's the guy.
It's, yeah.
Just wear the athlete or it's, it's, you don't have to prove anything to anybody.
MLS, international soccer coaches do it right.
They wear like warm-ups for their sport, you know?
I'm with them.
Joy with the news.
Well, that's the news.
And thanks for stopping by.
The Herbaly.
Oh, so you were talking Al Golden.
Al Golden, yeah, in Miami.
for the Miami Hurricanes.
Yeah, he would wear like the khakis and the like oversized.
Oh, okay.
For one game, Mike Nolan and Jack Del Rio was with the Jags.
They wore suits for the game.
Same game.
It's such a bad look.
They had to get made by Reebok, though, because you had to wear Reebok gear on the sideline.
Rebock suits.
So bad.
All right, nothing against Reebok.

throughout this entire show.
I have.
And you didn't snack today either.
No, I'm starving.
Jason McIntyre is joining us.
I do owe you a meal, remember from our bet about the jets?
And my wife's out of town.
Yeah, you want me to take you to lunch today?
That's what we'll do.
Yeah, I owe you whatever you want.
I don't have a mott.
Mill's on me.
Mutton and a big bottle.
I see what you did there, too.
Lunch instead of dinner?
Smooth.
Yeah, no, Kenny snuck in.
$11, not $11.
I'll make it a liquid lunch.
Calhurt will knock a few back.
Yes.
It's a game plan.
You're a former newspaper guy, so you give us headlines before they happen.
You've been bizarrely accurate.
All right.
Tomorrow's headlines today after the Browns Broncos game.
Yeah, well, last night, of course, Halloween, we did not get to swing by your house.
Apparently there's a huge line.
Everybody wants to get candy from Colin Coward.
Yeah.
The headline will be, one, two, Freddy's coming for you.
Freddy Kitchens and the Browns.
I think they deliver big in Denver this weekend.
So do I.
So the Broncos are starting a quarterback named Brandon Allen.
And you know one of my rules in life.
You can never trust a guy with two first names.
Brandon Allen has never taken an NFL snap before.
This is a guy who, not even a kneel down.
And now he's got to go up against Miles Garrett and that nasty Cleveland front.
I think this is a Baker-Mayfield spot.
Yeah, Olivier Vernon, Miles Garrett, Sheldon Richardson.
I actually think Cleveland's defense I look this morning is the healthiest.
It's been in weeks.
This could be ugly fast.
And here's the thing.
doesn't happen for the Browns this week.
They do have a light schedule the rest of the way.
According to one website, they have the second easiest schedule the rest of the season.
Toughest quarterback they face, Lamar Jackson, who they already beat.
And they've seen him now.
Listen, I know we bang on Baker and the Browns and I make fun of Freddie Kitchens a lot.
He does look in over his head.
But this is a team capable of a run here, guys.
Keep an eye on the Browns undervalued.
Tomorrow's headlines today.
What's the headline after the Patriots Ravens game?
Oh, gosh.
at the risk of making fun of my jets,
you remember Sam Darnold was seeing ghosts
a couple weeks ago on Monday night football.
The headline from Ravens Patriots,
I ain't afraid of no ghost.
Lamar Jackson and the Ravens, Colin,
I think this is the spot for them.
To take down the Patriots,
I know you disagree with me,
but John Harbaugh, off a buy,
is one of the best coaches in the league
with time for prepared.
He's a great coach.
And we've talked about this.
Teams that see Lamar Jackson for the first time,
there is a bit of a shock to the system.
Right.
Whoa.
what are they running here?
I know Belichick's one of the best.
I just like Harbaugh off a buy.
Ravens in their last 10 games in primetime action, 10 and 0.
This is a team at home getting points.
It's a step-up franchise.
They're the opposite of the Cincinnati's and Minnesota's.
Baltimore's always played well in big spots.
It's just the culture of the organization.
And again, listen, we know the Patriots are great.
I've been really wrong about them all season.
But you watch that offense.
They were not incredible against the,
Jets, in terms of moving the football. The defense
phenomenal, but they're basically
an average offense, according to
the numbers, looking against the rest of the
league. They're just not phenomenal.
All right, tomorrow's headlines today. What
will it be for the Packers' Chargers
game? Colin, we
have a couple people in the building who are going to be at this game.
I am a big 90s music
fan. The headline
will be, pack it up, pack it in,
pack going to win. I love,
absolutely love Green Bay.
Look at that Whitlocks dancing over there.
That is good.
Out here in L.A. against the Chargers.
You know, I went to the Packers Rams game here a couple years ago.
It's like 75% Packers fans.
Yeah.
Now it's Packers Chargers.
It's going to be like 80, 85% cheeseheads.
Aaron Rogers, your buddy.
Devonte Adams comes back.
Devante Adams back.
Here's a fun stat on the Chargers, okay?
Last four games, they have not eclipsed 40 yards rushing.
They cannot, and they have really good backs.
That's the first time in first.
50 years that's happened in the NFL.
And they've got Echler and Gordon, and they can't run the football because the offensive line decimated by injuries.
And also, the other thing I said in Blazing 5, I took the Packers.
Philip Rivers now is old and unathletic.
So that plus a bad old line and no running game, they struggle to get first downs.
Aaron Rogers coming off that incredible performance in Casey.
I think he puts it on the chargers here.
I just, listen, I like the chargers before the season.
I had them in the Super Bowl against the Eagles.
and it was just a bad call.
There's two beat up.
I love Green Bay this weekend.
Tomorrow's headlines today.
What will the headline be after the Bears Eagles game?
Oh, boy.
You're a big fan of Trubisky, right?
Not my cup of Joe.
No, you're not on shock.
The headline will be Trubisky.
Mitch Trubisky, I am going on a limb here predicting he is benched against the Eagles.
Here's the reasoning.
You can't run on this Philly defense.
The front four is filthy.
They're top seven against a run.
If you can't run the football, you put it in Mitch's hands to try to beat you.
We saw Josh Allen try that last week in Buffalo.
You can't do it.
The Eagles secondary is getting healthy.
Tribisky is out with all the Bears fans.
And you wonder if there's an erosion in the locker room.
The defense is playing good.
But I thought against the Saints, you could sense some resentment from the defensive side.
Like, wait, man, we're doing our part.
Can you hit a couple passes?
Look at this video.
He's missing everything by a country mile.
Trubisky really struggling.
And it looks bad when you trade up for him in the first.
the draft and Deshawn Watson goes later.
And Deshawn Watson is like an MVP candidate.
I believe Trubisky gets benched this weekend in an Eagles win over the bears.
By the way, a minute left.
How do you describe the Jets week where everything leaked?
Colin, we were having such a great segment.
Now you've got to bring up the Jets.
And it's making me a little salty.
I'm very upset.
The Jamal Adams stuff is depressing.
I told my wife, listen, I need to just save all the money I can and I need to buy the Jets in 20 years.
Because this futility is pathetic.
Do you think Gace gets fired?
No.
What are you going to have?
Sam Donald have three coaches in three different years?
Yeah, I don't think it gets.
That is horrible for the franchise.
I will say this.
They lose to Miami.
That goes up to 50-50.
But I agree with you.
You got to stick with it.
You got to, Greg Williams, my prediction, gets fired.
The defensive coordinator.
Really?
Yeah, Gase and Greg Williams don't like each other.
So you've got to at least solve the locker room among your coaching staff.
All right.
Great stuff.
Speak for yourself as around the corner.
Hope you had a great Halloween for Joy.
Taylor, myself, Jason McIntyre, the crew, Greg Tooey, John Goulet.
