We're digging into the biggest surprises of the season. And I'm looking back on some of my greatest playoff moments. If we didn't talk ever again, I was harmed. You just understood.
Starting point is 00:02:03 That's how personal it got. Wow. Then after that game seven, Markeep coming to him. He's like, you know, I love you, dog. You know, it's all love. This was just playoffs. This was just basketball. So listen to Point Game on the IHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.

Packed, absolutely jammed on a Friday. This live in Los Angeles is the herd.
Starting point is 00:02:49 Wherever you may be and however you may be listening, IHeart Radio, Fox Sports Radio and FS1, one week, one hour from now. The Blazing Five, which I believe is my strongest blazing five of the year. I'm not joking. Been cold, red hot starts today. One hour from today. I had so much fun. Joy Taylor's joining me. I get to watch the game last night with my friend Eric Mangini, former NFL head coach. If you ever get the chance in life to watch an NFL game with a head coach and we're breaking down plays and he's showing me film and he's not, it's just the best. It is just the best. It's an NFL steak dinner. NFL steak dinner. So have an NFL meat sandwich. Yeah, had a little, a little beer, a little steak with horseradish, some broccoli. Way to go. It was so much fun. And saluting veterans today, they'll be in our studio all day. So let me start with this. You know, it didn't look like John Gruden head coach and Mike Mayock, general manager, were going to work.
Starting point is 00:03:46 You've all seen that couple before. They're bricking at each other and you're like, oh, that's not, that is not going to last very long. You remember in the off season and the preseason, John Gruden liked Antonio Brown because Gruden likes weapons and Mayock was holding impromptu press conferences. saying he did not like Antonio Brown. It was cats and dogs and coaches and GMs and wide receivers living together, and it didn't feel very good. And HBO's hard knocks was there, and it was just a loud, noisy mess.
Starting point is 00:04:16 But it's all working. They're working. First of all, the offense is Gruden. It's rugged. Those three running backs, they all look the same. They look like they should be in weightlifting competitions. They're small, they're tough, they run, they pound, they're rugged. That is a John Gruden offense.
Starting point is 00:04:32 Derek Carr is efficient, over 70%. They've got a big play-wide receiver. They stole a tight end. And Mike Mayok's done an amazing job. Their second pick in the first round, got that from the Bears. Josh Jacobs, rookie of the year. Hunter Refro, Renfro, fifth round has been a steel. Foster Moreau, the tight end.
Starting point is 00:04:54 Fourth round looks fantastic. Everybody, the free agents, Richie Incognito. Lord, who knew he had this? this much left in the tank. Trent Brown worked Bosa last night. It's working, man. This thing is working.
Starting point is 00:05:10 And it didn't look like it was working, but between John Gruden's knowledge of the offense and Mike Mayock's personnel eye. And here's the thing. They're both legendarily football o'holics, football obsessed guys. And yes, the knock on Gruden was, well, he'd be out of the sport for a decade.
Starting point is 00:05:30 I said that. And the knock on Mayok was, as a broad, He's too technical. And as a GM, he's never done this before. But both watched the game closely with their obsessive nature of loving football from 30,000 feet. Then they landed on the tarmac, walked into the Raiders facility, and it works. It works. They've had a brutal schedule.
Starting point is 00:05:52 First or second toughest in the NFL. They were on the road for six weeks. And they're back home. And they're beating good teams. They're beating Detroit. beating Matt Stafford, beating Philip Rivers, beating the talented roster of the Chargers. It's working.
Starting point is 00:06:07 And the other thing is, you know, Vegas is very lucky. Vegas got that hockey team in the first year they got to the Stanley Cup finals. Vegas is getting a fun, lively, loud, explosive football team. And here's the thing I know about John Gruden. So I work with him at the other place. And I thought John, more than any non-broadcaster that I'd ever work with understood building brands. He had, you know, Chuckie in the look and the book and the snarl. Then he created that thing called quarterback camp and he had a little facility and he played
Starting point is 00:06:44 to the camera. He really knew how, as a football coach, to build a brand as a broadcaster, well, look what he has done to the Raiders so far. He has taken a brand. He has brought the swagger back. The Raiders have always been a little bit of a rebel and Gruden's always been the outspers. spoken rebel. He's built a brand. You saw him after the game last night with the fans. He knew what that looked like on TV. John Gruden knew what that looked like to you.
Starting point is 00:07:10 He knew what it looked like to Vegas. He knew what it looked like to the NFL. This is a guy that builds brands and builds offenses. And he's just done a terrific job. And I was wrong. I thought it was too noisy. I thought he'd been out too long. I can't wait to watch the Raiders play.
Starting point is 00:07:28 There's so much fun. The last two weeks, I haven't missed a snap. There's so much fun and Gruden talked about the win, a come from behind win after the game. That just says a lot about our team. We got a lot of resilient guys. They're going to keep competing. You may beat us, but we're going to be a hard out to get. We're going to battle.
Starting point is 00:07:51 And that's all I can say about this team. We are very happy with our foundation, our process. For the record, they're now. battling for a playoff spot, a wild card spot, and once again, Gruden's plan, multiple first-round picks. It's worked. I didn't think it would. It's worked.
Starting point is 00:08:17 It's like nothing I've ever seen. The noisiest NFL team is, by the way, Cleveland's noisy. Raiders noisy. One of them's working. And let me shift to the Cleveland Browns, and perhaps the reason they're not working, is their coach, Freddy Kitchens. Some suggest he's learning on the job. For the record, I've taken jobs before, where I'm learning on the job.
Starting point is 00:08:42 I've said before, when you take a job, you shouldn't be comfortable day one. You should have to bail water for a couple of months. You should challenge yourself. Don't be content. Freddie Kitchens was given the job, and perhaps he's over his head a little. But I would say this. He knows football, and Baker Mayfield liked him. But the stories are now coming out.
Starting point is 00:09:04 Quote, there's an increasing belief the Browns will fire Freddie Kitchens before the end of the season. They're not playing in the Super Bowl anyway. So Baker Mayfield will before the end of the season be on his fourth head coach. But the bigger issue, Cleveland, do you get it? Could you lack self-awareness anymore? Okay, there's going to be about eight NFL head coaching opening. maybe six, the average is seven. I'll give them to you.
Starting point is 00:09:35 Washington, Atlanta, Cleveland, and then we think maybe jets, maybe giants, maybe Dallas, maybe Jacksonville. You do know if the Dallas job is open, it's number one. That's not arguable. Easily number two is Atlanta. Matt Ryan, Thomas Dimitroff, good solid owner. Number three,
Starting point is 00:09:57 it's either Jacksonville, who's got Nick Foles and a good roster, or the giants who've got the Mara family, good owners, a history, and a young quarterback. The only job that's remotely as unsightly as poisonous as toxic as yours is Washington. And it would probably be a coin flip, and my guess is Dan Snyder would pay more. That's my guess.
Starting point is 00:10:23 You don't get it, do you? What is the value of running Freddie Kitchens off? You have nothing to play for now. What you want to do now is send a mess. to the top scouts, the top executives, the top coordinators, the top position coaches, that were not going to humiliate you. The reason you ended up with Freddie Kitchens is because you humiliated Hugh Jackson. Remember, talented people have options. Leonardo DiCaprio gets the first script. He turns it down or accepts it. The talented people in any industry have options.
Starting point is 00:11:03 they're going to choose the Atlanta job, the giant job, the Jacksonville job. I doubt it's open, but the cowboy job. All you're doing now is going to humiliate Freddie Kitchens, like you humiliated Hugh Jackson, and you're going to end up with a second or third tier coach. It should be noted. Greg Williams is not my cup of tea, but you had him in house, and he was winning at the end of the year, but he wasn't the right fit because he's an ego and he would push back on John Dorsey, the GM, and John Dorsey wanted a coach he could control.
Starting point is 00:11:39 And as I predicted, he's lost control. But Antonio Cromarty came on this show not long ago and said, you had the right guy. Baker's regressed since the defensive guy, Greg Williams left. Honestly, I just think it's the discipline on the team. I think when you look at it at things and the way that he's playing the first six games of this year, our first five, six games this year until when he had Greg Williams as the interim head coach. I think Greg was
Starting point is 00:12:08 hey, this is how we're going to play. This is what we're going to do and this is what you need to do. It's different when you have Freddie Kitchens. And also he's the offensive court and I don't think there's a lot of discipline there. I just think there was more discipline and Greg and Coach Williams expected more out of his players.
Starting point is 00:12:25 So that's probably too late. But if you can't win the Super Bowl, this is what's happened to Washington. It's about humiliating left tackle Trent Williams, being petty with Jay Gruden, humiliating Hugh Jackson and Freddie Kitchens. What are you doing? This will be in the seventh year of ownership, the sixth head coach or interim head coach for Jimmy Haslam.
Starting point is 00:12:52 Talk about a franchise that lacks complete and utter self-awareness. I said this on Twitter last weekend. I'm starting to feel sympathy for Baker Mayfield, believe it or not. I said when Baker came into this league, he's not only got to be good, he's got to be good enough to overcome Cleveland's dysfunction. In the history of my radio TV career, in the Colin Wright, Colin wrong, that is my rightiest right. I should be the mayor of Wrighty-Riteville. We're a year and a half through Baker Mayfield. They're going to be on their fourth coach, potentially.
Starting point is 00:13:24 Absurd. Utterly absurd. Coming up next, I think the Chargers have to look themselves. in the mirror this morning. And I think they need to make a big move and it's an uncomfortable discussion with the guy they love. That's coming up.
Starting point is 00:13:41 Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports Radio, FS1, and the IHeart Radio app. Welcome to my new podcast, Learn the Hard Way with me, your host, and your favorite therapist, Kear Games. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing and we're still chasing it
Starting point is 00:14:16 and we don't know when we've done enough because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth? Are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro.
Starting point is 00:14:31 Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Keer Gaines, as we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast, learn the hard way.

Starting point is 00:16:08 Hey, Miss Parker. Listen to the Clippers show on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. Will Ferrell's Big Money Players and IHeart Podcast presents soccer moms. So I'm Leanne. Yeah. This is my best friend, Janet. And we have been joined at the hip since high school. Absolutely.
Starting point is 00:16:30 Now a redacted amount of years later, we're still joined at the hip. Just a little bit bigger hips, wider. This is a podcast. We're recording it as we tailgate our youth soccer games in the back of my Honda Odyssey. With all the snacks and drink. Sidebar. Why did you get hard seltzer instead of beer? Oh, they had a bogo.
Starting point is 00:16:48 Well, then you got it. Do you want a white collar or something here? Just hit it. What are y'all doing? Microphones? Are you making a rap album? Oh, come on. Can you imagine?
Starting point is 00:16:56 I would buy it. Cut through the defense like a hot knife through sponge cake. That sounds delicious. Oh, you're lucky I'm not a drug addict. You're lucky I'm not an alcoholic. You are. You're lucky I'm not a killer. I love this team and I'm really trying to be a figure in their lives that they can rely on.
Starting point is 00:17:15 Oh. Listen to soccer moms on the Iheart radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Veterans Day is Monday. Saluting Veterans here at Fox all weekend long, all year long actually. Saluting Veterans Day, great to have you in. They'll be around our studio today as they will. were undisputed. Joy Taylor is joining me. Vicks Synex nasal spray works up to 12 hours. Vicks Synex nasal spray use only as directed. I like Philip Rivers a lot. I had him on the show.
Starting point is 00:17:46 I think he's been a real pro 14 years in the NFL as a starter. I think he's been in the NFL 16 years. But that two-minute drill last night, it was like a tipping point. It's an epiphany. We've been saying this for years. He's kind of unathletic. The NFL is changing. It's time to pivot. Great weapons. Raiders defense is young and below average. Experience quarterback. Eight plays, no yards. Too many bad picks last night. Too many errant throws. The NFL's least athletic quarterback. The Chargers are moving to Los Angeles. Philip Rivers, we're told, does not want to live and move his family to Los Angeles. I think it's time to get another quarterback. I know, I know, I've said this about Cam. I've said it about Matt Stafford. I like all of them. I'm not denying the talent. But there are times.
Starting point is 00:18:34 to break up and move on in relationships and the world is changing. I don't know if Lamar Jackson will end up being Colin Kaepernick, good for a while but doesn't build. I don't know if that's the future of quarterback. I don't. But I know what doesn't work now. As offensive lines have deteriorated because of the collective bargaining, having an unathletic old quarterback who's had an ACL doesn't work unless you have a superstar offensive line
Starting point is 00:19:02 and they got too many players to be spending a fortune up front. And again, I can like somebody. I like Matt Stafford. Cam Newton drives me nuts, but I would never deny his talent. Philip Rivers is good. But that game last night, that was a mess at the end. And they got weapons. They got two running backs.
Starting point is 00:19:22 They've got, this is a guy that's been in this league forever. They looked helter, skeletal, and disorganized against a below-average rebuilding young defense. even Philip Rivers after admitted that was bad. You give a team 10 points at their place, and then you have had the ball there with a chance to win, and you have eight snaps and go nowhere. It's going to be tough to win. Raiders missed the PAT.
Starting point is 00:19:49 Weather was fine, bad defense, three timeouts, not a yard, eight snaps. I mean, what are the standards? After a while, Matt Stafford, Cam, and Philip Rivers, I think I've seen enough. Ham's too big beat up and it's a precision league. Matt doesn't make enough big plays and big games and a really good division. And I'm watching last night and some throw,
Starting point is 00:20:12 he's lucky those were the only picks he threw. I don't know. Listen, the Chargers can't sell tickets in L.A. They need juice. They need juice. And by the way, they're four and six. They're going to get a top 12, top 15 draft pick. They've got two good corners, two good backs.
Starting point is 00:20:29 they got real players here. They got two good pass rushers. Can you move somebody? But I think you have to seriously consider, and there are tipping points. There are moments as a staff, as a GM, you look up and go, the league's changing.
Starting point is 00:20:44 We got the oldest, slowest guy. By the way, this has a little Eli Manning to it, where you've got the oldest, slowest, unathletic guy, offensive lines not great. O lines are regressing in the NFL. This is just not good enough in a division with Patrick Mahomes,
Starting point is 00:20:58 Derek Carr, And an AFC with all sorts of young, young good quarterbacks, the smartest defensive coach maybe ever in Bill Belichick. It just felt like to me this isn't good enough. Joy with the news. No, no, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. The NBA find the clippers $50,000 for statements made by Doc Rivers about Kauai Leonard.
Starting point is 00:21:20 He said Kauai was feeling great and the team was not concerned about him. But the league felt that was inconsistent with Kauai's actual health status. And Kauai spoke about fine and said he was shocked, but isn't going to pay attention to the distractions. You know, for me, you know, I'm on his side. You know what I mean? I'm a clipper. He's my coach. So it's just disappointing, you know, that it feels like they want, you know, players to play if they're not ready.
Starting point is 00:21:50 But it is what it is. Like I said, I don't read into it. I got to do what's going to make me healthy. you know, it's going to help the team be successful. And that's me, you know, being able to play basketball games for us. That is correct, Kauai. They beat the Blazers 107-101 last night. Kauai at 27 points.
Starting point is 00:22:10 He was very good in the fourth, too. Great in the fourth. This kind of started the spiral a little out of control over the past couple of days. Sure did. He talked about it and said, I don't want to hear about it. I'm trying to get better. I would always try to talk him out of that. And then Steve Clifford talked about what Michael Jordan's thoughts on load management
Starting point is 00:22:28 was and said, Michael said, you're, you get paid to play 82 games. That's kind of being misquoted around the media now. MJ didn't come out and say that. It's kind of an older and not direct quote from him. Right. But this whole load management thing, the reaction is starting to border on madness. Like, first of all, this is not new. Popovich was fined in 2012 for sitting players.
Starting point is 00:22:51 We didn't call it load management. LeBron has been sitting out games for years. and people have been complaining. It wasn't until we gave it a name that it became spooky and terrifying, because now we, well, that's a thing, and we have to be careful of that because why do we have a name for it now?
Starting point is 00:23:11 It used to just be resting or a day off. Used to be called stretching. Then they called it yoga. And now it's a thing. It used to be just, you'd go stretch for 20 minutes. Right, and that was okay. And you weren't less of a man for doing it. Like now all of a sudden, you know,
Starting point is 00:23:23 you wear special pants or something. You give anybody a name, you give anything in name. Yes, and it starts to become scary. But the bigger problem with this to me is aside from the obvious, which once you gave it a name, it became terrifying, is that it's now moved into, it's no longer just a family of four that's affected. The networks are starting to be affected by it and advertisers are starting to be affected by it. So what really matters at the end of the day? What do we all talk about?
Starting point is 00:23:48 What can you find that? Money. Thank you. So that's what this is really about. If you look for the answer, that's what it is. And here's the problem with it. If the clippers were crappy and nobody wanted them on TV, we wouldn't. care.
Starting point is 00:23:58 No. But I mean, other guys do this as well. We're not paying attention to it. Kauai is the best player in the league. That's why we're paying attention to it. But the bigger picture is this. It comes down to health, which is your most valuable commodity as a human in any profession, period, no matter what you do or who you are. If you're not healthy, that's all that matters.
Starting point is 00:24:15 We always say that. You can have all the money in the world. You're not healthy. It doesn't matter. So for all the talk about we're going to force them to play games or, you know, we demand that you be out there. It comes down to the human body and there's nothing you can do about it. If he says he's not healthy, you can tell me you don't feel well.
Starting point is 00:24:30 I'm like, Colin, you feel fine. I don't know how you feel. You can't tell someone else. And that's really more of quiet. That's why he's no longer with San Antonio anymore. But the optics on it are hockey guys play and they beat each other up. Football guys are always hurt and play. There's more games.
Starting point is 00:24:45 The optics, I think the optics for the average fan who drives two hours to a game or bad. And I do think, I think the networks just absolutely hate this. But I do think, to your point, I think when you give stuff in name, it just, it's different. And once you called it load, I remember the day that I saw it on Twitter, I think LeBron did it. And I said, load management.
Starting point is 00:25:05 That's a goofy name for the, the minute you gave it a name, it's trouble. It became trouble. And at the end of the day, like I said, it's about someone else's body. So it doesn't matter if hockey guys play through horrible injuries or baseball players play through whatever.
Starting point is 00:25:19 It doesn't matter. If you're talking about someone's health, you can't control that. There's literally no way to regulate this, so I don't know what they're going to do. So Ohio State will be missing defensive star Chase Young when they take on Maryland tomorrow. The Buckeyes announced that Young
Starting point is 00:25:30 will miss the game due to a possible NCAA violation. And the Hidesman Hopeful took to Twitter to give more of an explanation. He said, unfortunately, I won't be playing this week because of an NCAA eligibility issue. I made a mistake last year by accepting a loan from a family friend I've known since
Starting point is 00:25:46 this summer before my freshman year at OSU. I repaid it in full last summer and I'm working with the university and the NCAA to get back on the field as soon as possible. I want to thank my family teammates, coaches in the whole Ohio State community for all love and support. God bless and go bucks. Well, you know, obviously
Starting point is 00:26:02 it's like the kid is being forthright, apparently. If I'm the NCAA and they play Penn State next week, I get it fixed. Two weeks. I get it fixed fast. Yeah, so the conversation is that he could have possibly, could possibly be ineligible for the rest of the season, which obviously nobody wants to see.
Starting point is 00:26:18 And this is, you know, this is one of those things like he's admitting to what he did, and when you look at this situation, like what college kid hasn't done this. It's just when you play sports, you're held to a different standard than other athletes. And, like, there's rules and ridiculous regulations that we all, we all argue when it comes to the NCAA. But hopefully they get it sorted out because it doesn't seem, if this is the truth, that's not a major thing. Like, investigated, he's already suspended for a game.
Starting point is 00:26:44 The game is on Fox. The coverage begins 11 a.m. Eastern. And, you know, like, he's a Heisman hopeful, but also if there weren't so many teams that needed quarterbacks in the draft, he would go number one overall. Yeah. I mean, he's a lot. It's funny, I had a job in college. I didn't have any money in college. The parents were divorced. And I worked a bunch of jobs to have a little bit of money, and I was still broke. But remember, when you're a college athlete, you can't.
Starting point is 00:27:06 Now, you do get, like, free smoothies all day. And there's a training table, but you don't, you can't work. The light company doesn't take payment in smoothies. Yeah. So, I mean, listen, I know we think all these athletes are just rolling in cash. But when you're in season, life's pretty good. But sometimes you're out of season, and then you want 20 bucks for a girlfriend in a pizza, and you don't have it. I mean, even in season.
Starting point is 00:27:25 Like, just because you're a, traveling at the team and all that stuff is taken care of. It's, it's college. It's what it is. So hopefully they get it sorted out. Finally, Tua's status is still up in the air for the matchup against LSU tomorrow. Nick Saban said all week, the two will be a game time decision. And he doubled down on that in his last press conference. Look, Tua's worked hard to try to get back where he has an opportunity to play. He's been able to practice some. We still don't know what his status for the game is going to be. We'll make it, you know, when the game comes. I'm not going to play the guy that can't move.
Starting point is 00:27:58 So that was on Wednesday, but SEC on CBS analyst Gary Danielson watched practice yesterday, and he said that Tua does not look like himself. You know, I watched him practice yesterday. He's not 100%. I don't care what Alabama says. I don't care what Tua says. I watch him. He does not have that spring in his step.
Starting point is 00:28:17 It's not natural. He's okay, but he's not Tua that started the season. Yeah, well, I think we know that. I mean, the question becomes, you've got to leave it to the kid. The kid makes a call on that, especially at the college level. I don't know. I don't love this because if it's not LSU, he wouldn't be out there. Oh, God, no.
Starting point is 00:28:36 And when you talk about, I mean, Tua, this is this decision that could affect the rest of his career. And obviously, you know, we want to focus on the rest of his college career first. But it's just one of those injuries that takes a lot of time to recover from. So tomorrow will be interesting. Yeah. Joy with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by.
Starting point is 00:28:57 The Heard Line News. You know, I love watching games with Eric Mangini or any NFL coach, because I like to let them learn the game from my worldview. But mostly, I just listen to him and ask a bunch of questions. Former NFL coach, Jets Browns. Eric Mangini, Fox Sports Analysts joining us. Defensive coordinator 49ers. Coached under Belichick, Jim Harbaugh, Bill Parcells.
Starting point is 00:29:18 We had all sorts of good Parcells, Belichick stuff. We can't talk about all of that on the air. So I know I come across. I'm harsh. I'm just a radio TV guy. But God, eight plays, final drive. There are times, Eric, that things converge in life. Offensive line play is not great.
Starting point is 00:29:38 He is the league's most unathletic quarterback. There are times last night. I'm just like, man, that looks like 1998 NFL football, doesn't it? Yeah, it was a rough night. But I think we got to put into a little bit of a context here. you got a new offense coordinator. It's only the second game that guy's been calling plays. You're playing on Thursday night football.
Starting point is 00:29:57 So it's a short week. There hasn't been a lot of prep. Was it a great game? No, it was a horrible game. And he threw the three picks and then had two others that were called back. But I don't know if this is indicative of him being past the point of being a productive, successful quarterback. I think if he was on the market, you know, it's funny. Carolina may get rid of Cam.
Starting point is 00:30:16 If he was on the market, Carolina would be a great fit for him because, you know, they're looking for a little bit more of a precise thrower, the veteran leadership, they got the pieces around. But do you think this morning at least, the general manager, Tom Telesco, do you think a game like this in a spot like this, it does give him pause? Well, it gets him pause for a couple of reasons. He's an unrestricted free agent next year. So you've got to make a decision whether or not you want to commit to him. And at what price do you want to commit to him at?
Starting point is 00:30:47 So if he's going to command market value and you've got to pay that. 29 million or something or 30. It's probably going to be more than that at that point. And there's going to be a significant amount of year. So you've got to make that decision. But you also have to look at it as what are my alternatives. And as we know, quarterbacks are not easy to find. And when you look at Philip Rivers' career, he's at 14 years of the starter.
Starting point is 00:31:08 And 11 of those seasons, they've been 500 or better. So he's had it. He's been consistently successful and given them a chance to win every year. And last year, they go 12 and 4. No one was really complaining about Philip Rivers last year. Things can change. As the GM, you need to look at the offensive line. You need to look at a couple different spots there because he didn't lose that game alone last night.
Starting point is 00:31:33 Okay. Let's go to the Raiders. Historically, noise is not great in this league. It's just not. I mean, you and I are sitting down looking at plays last night on your phone, and it's a very complicated game. It's time-consuming. You don't have a lot of room for distractions.
Starting point is 00:31:49 You guys sleep in your office two days a week. So it is. I'm always taken back by just every move and the choreography of, as you were showing me, Raven stuff last night, the blocking patterns. The Raiders were loud. The GM was calling press conferences about A, B. The coach said, I love him. You got hard knocks, incognito.
Starting point is 00:32:10 How surprised are you? It's kind of working. It's the road trip that they went on. and the fact that they were away from home for as long as they were. The London thing. And they didn't have any home games or I forget how long a period it was, but it was significant for them to be able to overcome that. And then last night, the defense is already young and depleted.
Starting point is 00:32:33 The defensive line was depleted. There's a lot of really good things that they're doing. But they're overcoming some of the things, this function that they produced themselves. They brought A, B, in. They brought some of these other guys in. So you don't want to go. great on a curve because they created some of the drama themselves when they had a choice to make
Starting point is 00:32:54 those decisions or not make those decisions. So yeah, they have overcome that stuff. They also produce it themselves. And I do, I do give them a ton of credit for overcoming the road games that they've had and being the position that they're in right now. I was very, I said, John has been out of the coaching part for a decade, although like you out of the head coaching for time, you're still in the sport. You look at film constantly. We did last night. That's what you do. Was I too hyperbolic on the criticism that if you stay on the game, like Joe Gibbs went to NASCAR. He just went to another sport. But, you know, Gruden, I work with him. He's a football aholic. He's obsessed by it. He watches film all day. That maybe the break allowed him to watch the
Starting point is 00:33:39 sport from 30,000 feet. Oh, I like what New England does. I like what McCarthy does. Is it possible that was a break for him. Yeah, there's real value to it. When you can, when you can take a step out of your world, because your world narrows significantly to the teams that you're playing, the division that you're in, the team that you have, and you're able to
Starting point is 00:34:00 come out of that and take a global view, it's really refreshing. You step off the treadmill. You step off the treadmill. And then you look at ideas that other people are using. You look at coaching styles that are being incorporated and being successful, even having the chance to look at some of the things that are being done
Starting point is 00:34:15 in college because oftentimes you don't get to see that. You look at college tape. But you don't watch the games. But you don't really watch the games. You don't really hear the stories. You don't get a chance to meet with those guys. But being away from the game does A, recharge you. And then B, it gives you a chance to see all those different ideas that when you're in
Starting point is 00:34:36 your bubble, you never have any awareness of. That's interesting. You know, we were very critical, myself included, on the Kaleel Mack trade. I mean, my feeling's always been, you drive. raft in this league to find a Khalil Mack, and then when he's great, you have to pay him. I understand moving good pieces, but gosh, he's about as good as you can do. You look at this morning, the Bears aren't very good, they don't have a quarterback, and they don't have a first round pick to get one, and he has got two picks in the first round last year.
Starting point is 00:35:03 Josh Jacobs has been a home run. They got two more this year. Were we overly critical? Go back to what you thought about the Khalil Mack trade because the media hated it. I understood that trade. And John comes in, he's got unprecedented control, he's got an unprecedented contract, and Cleo Mac didn't want to meet with him. He didn't want to talk to him.
Starting point is 00:35:23 He didn't want to work it out. So how, as being in John's position, could you possibly say, okay, I want to commit to that guy, and I want to commit to that guy and give him the highest contract that anybody's gotten at that position? You can't do it. There was no chance for that to be successful. So then when he moved on from him, the Raiders are in a great position. they'll get what five players or six.
Starting point is 00:35:45 I believe it's five players, but we're talking about three first rounders. So that's 15 years of young talent. And then there's a third and a six. There's another eight years of young cheap talent. Plus all the money you saved that you didn't have to spend for free agency, what the bears had to pay, Calil Mac, now you can improve the team that way too.
Starting point is 00:36:06 So from a long-term perspective, he really maximized that asset, an asset that had no interest in being part of his program. And now he's in a position to have young players that are part of his system, part of his vision that he can shape in his way. Yeah, by the way, John definitely has, you speak in a worldview, I watched his running backs last night. We were joking watching this. They all look the same. They're all rocked up.
Starting point is 00:36:34 They're all rocked up. John loves those tough guys, extra yard guys, and he's got three really interesting players. All right, Freddie Kitchens' rumors today they could fire them before the end of the season. If you're not going to win the Super Bowl, I don't think there's any value humiliating coaches. I think you're sending optics around the league that, you know, our guy just fires people. Whether you like Freddie or not, I don't like doing this off the heels of doing it to Hugh Jackson. I don't like the optics to executive scouts. But it's not huge.
Starting point is 00:37:04 It's year after year. It's dysfunction on top of dysfunction. At some point, you need to be. to sit back and say, this is the vision of our organization. These are the values of our organization. This is the way that we're going to achieve that vision and those values. And by moving on from another head coach in the middle of the season, it doesn't push anything forward. And the Browns are in a unique situation.
Starting point is 00:37:30 They could win every single game that they have the rest of the season. A lot of backup quarterbacks. It's a light schedule. And this narrative could change dramatically. like it did last year. Freddie took over towards the latter half of the season. He won some games. Everybody liked him. This could easily come back. And we could be talking in four or five weeks and say, wow, the bronze habit figured out. And this looks like the team we hope they'd be. So be patient. And even if it doesn't work out, go through the end of the year. And then at the end of the year, sit back and evaluate things objectively, not emotionally, objectively, and say, what did we do well? What do we do poorly?
Starting point is 00:38:08 and which one of these things can change as opposed to, hey, let's get rid of this guy. It's easy to fire anybody, like quarterbacks or take your pick, but now you've got to go find someone better. All right, stick around. I got two things I want to talk to you about. The Patriots, lack of weapons. Also, I think there's an NFL team, Rams that are going to turn it around and are in the right direction, plus the Cowboys and the Vikings, blazing five top of the hour, just starting on a Friday, watched the game last night with the coach, all sorts of interesting information.

And we're still chasing it.
Starting point is 00:39:09 And we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on Earth? Are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely.
Starting point is 00:39:25 And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. This linebacker walks up to me, he goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her. What? Quarterback on office blue of 42.
Starting point is 00:40:58 Hey, rep, my mama want you to wave at her. What? Hey, Miss Parker. Listen to the Cliverts show on the IHeart Radio. app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. Will Ferrell's Big Money Players and IHeart Podcast presents Soccer Moms. So I'm Leanne. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:41:19 This is my best friend, Janet. Hey. And we have been joined at the hips since high school. Absolutely. Now a redacted amount of years later, we're still joined at the hip. Just a little bit bigger hips, wider. This is a podcast. We're recording it as we tailgate our youth soccer games in the back of my Honda Odyssey.
Starting point is 00:41:34 With all the snacks and drinks. Sidebar. Why did you get hard seltzer instead of beer? hit a bogo. Well, then you got it. Do you want a white collar something here? Just hit it. What are y'all doing? Microphones? Are you making a rap album? Oh, I would. Come on. Could you boot? I would buy it.
Starting point is 00:41:50 Cutts through the defense like a hot knife through sponge cake. That sounds delicious. Oh, you're lucky. I'm not a drug addict. You're lucky. I'm not an alcoholic. You are. I'm lucky I'm not a killer. I love this team and I'm really trying to be a figure in their lives that they can rely on. Oh. Oh. Starting point is 00:42:17 Veterans Day and every day at Fox Sports. We're committed to embracing the armed forces with our vets through Fox Sports supports partnerships like the mission continues. The Blue Star Families, here they are in our studio today. I bet you they're all cowboy fans. I bet you they're all cowboy. Okay. All right. I got faith.
Starting point is 00:42:33 Thank you. Don't want all cowboy fans in here. Eric Mangini is joining me two-time NFL head coach Jets. Browns. So let's talk about this. I really like the Rams this weekend. Sean McVeigh, I've always had this theory that really great coaches, Belichick, Andy Reid, Sean Peyton historically, Nick Saban on Bowles. They're just good off buys. You give a great engineer another 10 days to look at the computer, whatever. So take me to that. Is there any belief? John Harbaugh, by the way, is 10 and 12 a buy. I like the Rams. That's a big component this
Starting point is 00:43:03 weekend against Pittsburgh. Yeah, the buy week was always, it was a hard week in New England and everywhere I've been, and I'm sure when I was a head coach, it was a hard week as well for the staff. But it's an incredible week because you get a chance to take a step back and look at the season to that point. And some things that you think are right when you go back and analyze it, it's not right. You saw it the wrong way. By the way, so you're saying during the season, you don't have those days to do that. No, you have, so you play the game, you evaluate the tape, you meet with the players the next day, you go through the corrections, and then you move on to the next opponent.
Starting point is 00:43:41 So the ability to go back and look at maybe it's a defense that you run, maybe it's a series, a package of plays that you run that aren't quite working the way you imagine they'd work. And now when you put it in the context of all those games and you see where the problems are, or you see that it really isn't a flawed player or flawed defense, it's been a mistackle here or one slight misassignment here that skews the numbers on things.
Starting point is 00:44:08 and it's such an opportunity to evaluate where you are as a team. Then towards the latter part of the week, it gives you that chance to jump on the next opponent and be in a great place when the players come back. By the way, often your players get healthy. Sometimes it's the healthiest your roster is. Midseason is off to buy. Well, it's healthy.
Starting point is 00:44:31 It's the chance. And the coaches, too, get a little more time than they normally would. But everybody gets a chance to exhale. everybody gets a chance to be a normal person again for a little while. And then as a staff, you get that opportunity. The good ones, the good staffs go back and evaluate, where are we? And you have to approach that week with absolute honesty. You've got to have brutal honesty as to where you are as a team.
Starting point is 00:44:56 And if you have that, you've got a chance for huge growth the next part of the season. Dallas hosts, Minnesota. I think you have two good enough coaches, two great running backs, two great line backer course. There's a lot of twos here. But I like Dak over Kirk because I think Dak's one of those guys that's not artistic and doesn't know what's look great, but he makes big plays when it matters. And I think we judge him a little bit on the fourth round. He doesn't throw the prettiest ball. They've got Zeke. I think there's there are times in this NFL that certain quarterbacks have an it and they don't look pretty. Philip Rivers, by the way, most of his
Starting point is 00:45:31 career does not look pretty. I've got a lot of friends on the Dallas staff. And the thing that they consistently talk about is his character. And the way that he is in the locker room, his work ethic, the way that he relates not just to the players, but to the staff, his approach. And to me,
Starting point is 00:45:47 that is one of the biggest indicators that he'll continue to grow as a player and continue to get better as a quarterback. Tom had high character, work ethic, discipline. It wasn't pretty early for Tom Brady. And I'm not saying that's like with like. But when you've got those characteristics,
Starting point is 00:46:05 you've got a chance to continue to improve on a consistent basis. And then when the team around you is cheering for you and supporting you because of the type of person that you are, that has huge value too because as you go through those ups and downs, they're right there with you. They don't bail. And I don't know what the dynamic is with Kirk and Minnesota. And he came in there in such a different way, being the highest paid guy and doing the Facebook. Well, you know, and it's easier.
Starting point is 00:46:34 could I make this argument? It's easy to root for DAC. He hasn't been paid yet. He's won divisions in playoff games. This team, whereas Kirk was other team, came in highest paid guy and struggled first year. I find Dak, if I'm in that
Starting point is 00:46:50 cowboy locker room, he's the only guy that hasn't been paid. You absolutely want to cheer for him. And you see him after every game. He says the right thing. He doesn't bring any unnecessary distractions or conflicts or look at me type comments or woe is me type comments. It's accountability.
Starting point is 00:47:12 It's focus. It's moving on in the next play. That's hard to do. We see it week in and week out where guys get up in the podium and they can't help themselves but create more problems for their situation where DAC is the polar opposite. I'm completely cheering for him because of the type of person I hear he is. And I'm hopeful that he continues to grow as a player. Minute and a half left.
Starting point is 00:47:37 New England, just a loss, or do you see real problems? Well, this is different. I think the O-line problems are real and they're not going away. And Dante Scarnacia does an amazing job. But we're talking about the fourth left tackle they've been on in the last three years. There's Soldier and then Brown and then Isaiah win. And that's always been the strength of this team. They've always been good up front.
Starting point is 00:47:58 And he's done a great job with Newhouse. but you've also lost your center. You lose Mike Devlin, the tight end slash fullback, the kicker situation. And they've had a really light schedule, the early part of the season. But you saw some cracks in that defense against Cleveland. If Cleveland could have gotten out of their own way, they could have easily won that game. Then we go into Baltimore, and now they're playing a series of teams that are going to challenge them in a lot of different ways. And their ability to self-correct, to minimize weaknesses, to accentuate strengths,
Starting point is 00:48:30 is fantastic, but at some point, you can only put so many, so much patches on the wall before it's just, it's too much. Listen, you have an immobile quarterback, a beat-up offensive line, no vertical threat, and Grunk retired. That's a lot of boxes you're not checking.
Starting point is 00:48:50 Well, it's that, but then you had the series of injuries on the offensive line. You lose Devlin. The kicker? Losing their kicker, that has always been. uncertainty. Do you know Super Bowls? They've all been three points?
Starting point is 00:49:03 Yeah, I was there for all of them. The early ones, Adam Venetary, he changed a lot of people's lives. He did. All right. Eric Mangini, great stuff. If you're going to look at stats and numbers, he has no shot at making this World Cup team. and the truth about the U.S. national team. Joy Taylor is joining me. We had a crazy game last night, just a crazy game. It was so much fun. Every league's got its issues, right?
Starting point is 00:53:32 But the NFL right now, with what they've done with the rules, to make it, you know, very pro-quarterback, very pro offense. You just get a lot of close games because you're just, you can make, I mean, the Chargers had all sorts of mistakes last night, and at the end of the game, they're driving to win.
Starting point is 00:53:49 You're never, unless you're just incompetent and ineptic quarterback, you're never out of these games. We did this yesterday. Backup quarterbacks in the league are 24 and 24. Even backups now. Kyler Murray's played one year a college football comes, and he can play. The game is so much more quarterback friendly. We got Derek Carr
Starting point is 00:54:08 completing 72% of his throws. And it's kind of created a lot of parody in the league. And a lot of crazy fun shootouts. Right. And that game last night, and just in general, the Chargers, like, that's what they do. Week to week, you never know what you're going to get from them. But that's just such a, at the end of the game, like, it's the last, like, premier game there in Oakland. And, like, Bruden running around with the fans.
Starting point is 00:54:34 Oh, God, it was so good. Derek Carr after the game, he's about to cry. It was so great. It's like the Raiders, what we thought they were going to be at the beginning of the seasons and what they are now. It's shocking. It's shocking. But it's, I don't know if we should be shocked, excited is what I am.
Starting point is 00:54:49 Because I didn't know, I really did not want them to, especially for Oakland, for them to go out in a year that was super disappointing and then go into Vegas with not knowing what they were going to get. You know, people forget how powerful. Now, we know the Cowboys have the biggest brand in the NFL. We know the Steelers and the Packers. That's probably your top three. People forget how big the Raider brand.
Starting point is 00:55:08 is especially Denver West. In Vegas, they've always been the most popular team. In the Bay Area, wildly popular. In Los Angeles, I'm not, they're more popular than the Rams and Chargers. Right. There's no question. So the Raiders brand, it's just been suppressed for years. Right.
Starting point is 00:55:25 And it's just, it's one of those teams that has that aura about it. It's like, if you're a Raiders fan, it's like, you're just tougher than everyone else. It's like, it's like a tough place to go watch a game if you're a fan from another team. So I'm happy for the Raiders. Vegas is getting a fun team. Yeah. All right, here we go. We work on this stuff.
Starting point is 00:55:43 It's a Blazing 5. I love my picks. Here we go. That's a hot one. Let's blaze it up. Fire it up. It's Collins Blazing 5. Giants at Jets.
Starting point is 00:55:53 This is bet the number. Two bad teams playing in the same stadium. Why wouldn't you take the Jets and the points? The Giants are on a five-game losing streak. Daniel Jones has lost all confidence. Don't go crazy on Sam Donald. He was 27 to 39 last week. He had one ugly peasant.
Starting point is 00:56:08 pick, but he moved the ball. He didn't feel bad about himself. He played pretty well last week except for a terrible pick. The Giants since week five are a mess. They're last in everything. Points allowed yards per play. They've allowed 30 points in five games this year. Only Tampa's allowed more. And the turnovers are brutal. 22 most in the NFL. I get a field goal, the better quarterback. If two teams who play in the same stadium, I get a field goal, the Giants can't stop anybody. Finally, it looks like Darnold's got a full array of offensive pieces. I'll take the Jets to win. 3024. Cardinals at Buccaneers. Like it. I love it. Arizona plus five. I think Arizona's the better team. I think they played a really, really tough schedule. Their three,
Starting point is 00:56:55 five and one is Arizona. But their five losses, all of them are all the teams currently 500 or better. Arizona's been a tough out. And despite having a rookie quarterback, this is a a remarkable number and a bad offensive line and a rookie head coach. They have the fewest turnovers in the NFL at four that makes less than New England. It makes no sense. Kiner didn't have a pick in his last 172 attempts. That's the longest active streak in the NFL. Tampa has the worst pass defense in the league. They've had a brutal schedule where they've been on the road. Now they had to go all the way to Seattle, play an overtime game, come all the way back. I got
Starting point is 00:57:34 Arizona, 10 days rest. I think they're the better team right now. I think Arizona wins 28 to 26. Panthers and Packers. Again, you know how I feel about Carolina. I think Green Bay is good but flawed. I think Carolina similarly is good but average at quarterback, but I get
Starting point is 00:57:55 four and a half points. I like the number. I'll take Carolina. Here's the other thing. Carolina leads the NFL with 34 sacks. You saw what the Chargers defensive front did the Green Bay's offensive line. Carolina's going to get pressure. The Packers have the youngest defense in the NFL. It's the youngest. It has dropped off from its impressive start.
Starting point is 00:58:12 If you go to the Green Bay defense in the last six games, folks, they're giving up 26 a game. Giving up 410 yards a game. It's been exposed a little. It's good. Opportunistic. It's not special. Kyle Allen has been exceptional in the red zone.
Starting point is 00:58:29 Why? Because he's got Christian McCaffrey. Greg Olsen's an above-average tied end. He'll get Hall of Fame votes, and I like their two receivers. This is too many points. I think the Panthers cover. I'll probably give Green Bay a close win, but I would take four and a half with Carolina all day.
Starting point is 00:58:46 Rams at Steelers. This is another. Like it, I love it. I'll take the Rams minus four. Sean McVey has had his way with the weaker AFC. Outside of Belichick and the Super Bowl, he's 10 and O. He's off a bye. He stepped off the treadmill.
Starting point is 00:58:59 Their offensive lines a little healthier. The secret with the Rams, Rams right now, their defenses actually since the acquisition of Jalen Ramsey been playing top five defense in the NFL. And Jared Gough, this may surprise you. His
Starting point is 00:59:14 November numbers in the last couple years are like all-time stuff, like over Drew Breeze. The Rams again, they're on a two-game winning streak, held both of their opponents to just ten points each, and the Steelers struggle. On the
Starting point is 00:59:30 backup running back, a Mason Rudolph, Pop Gun Arm. I like the Rams to win. I'll swallow the four points, 28 to 20. Seahawks at 49ers. I may be from Seattle, but I like the 49ers minus six and a half. I think Seattle's defense, Pete Carroll's doing it with Bobby Wagner and Bondo. They're near the bottom in total defense, near the bottom in past defense.
Starting point is 00:59:54 They've become incredibly Russell Wilson dependent. That's why I'd make him my MVP. The 49ers are number one in every year. defense, total, pass, and red zone. They're also getting both their tackles back. Joe Staley left tackle, Mike McGlinchie right tackle
Starting point is 01:00:12 and their fullback that they use like New England often and to lead their running game. Arizona, Jimmy Garapolo coming up. A very good game. Played well, little extra time. Seattle went to overtime.
Starting point is 01:00:29 49ers win by more than a touchdown. 31 to 23. That's a good Monday night football game. This year we've had some great Monday night football games, some unbelievable Thursday night games. Last night was absolutely sensational. Let me just say this, if I may. You know, the media of which I am marginally a part of just crushed Bill Polly. How could you miss on Lamar Jackson?
Starting point is 01:00:59 Listen, we all miss on these quarterbacks. Who knows? I mean, Dak Prescott, everybody in the league passed on him three rounds. Tom Brady, everybody passed on him for five rounds. Quarterbacks hard to get. Russell Wilson, everybody passed on him, including Seattle, for two rounds. How about this sports media, though, gets crushed, myself included, for how we treated John Gruden on Khalil Mack.
Starting point is 01:01:21 I got to tell you something. They got two first round picks. They've already used one. Josh Jacobs, he's going to be a rookie of the year. And the second one, they have the Bears pick. Well, Chicago's not very good. that's going to end up being a top 10 pick. This morning I looked up who on the mock drafts,
Starting point is 01:01:39 who would be available at about the 9th or 10th pick? Oklahoma receiver Cidie Lamb. Have you seen him play? Oh, my Lord. Gruden's good with wide receivers. This thing's going to work out okay. He's going to end up getting two great players. You can't doubt what Gruden and Mike Mayak have done with their offensive pieces.
Starting point is 01:01:59 They've been great with. their offensive. Richie Incognito, Josh Jacobs, Hunter Renfro, the tight end from LSU. They have done a tremendous job. Now quarterback, by the way, Chicago now isn't good, doesn't have a quarterback, and doesn't have a first round pick to get a quarterback. So we all came in with the Anvil, myself included, but never forget this. Remember the Sports Analytics Conference, MIT?
Starting point is 01:02:23 Remember when they gave Gruden the award for best analytic trade for getting four picks in the deal, including two first picks. Those people at Sloan are pretty smart because it looks like a good deal today. So Chicago doesn't have a quarterback, doesn't have a first round pick. Kaleo Mack, for the record, has got five and a half sacks. He's terrific. No dispute. But he's not, like JJ Watt, not really translating to wins because past rushers don't
Starting point is 01:02:48 if you're always behind. John Gruden and Derek Carr are working. They check a lot of boxes right now. And they didn't check these boxes, all of them two years ago. But offensive line, check, running back, check, check, check, wide receiver check, tight end check. And Derek Carr's playing, as John has said, the best football of his life. I didn't love the Kaleo Mac move.
Starting point is 01:03:11 And part of it was I didn't trust John Gruden as a drafter. He wasn't that great in Tampa. He really wasn't. He was not a great personnel guy in Tampa. But when I watched the first Mike Mayock, John Gruden, the first big draft, I got to be honest with you. Free agent draft, they nailed it. They were good.
Starting point is 01:03:29 They know what they're doing. So shame on us. We like to dish it out. We should be able to take it too. All right. Orlando Scandrick came on last week. Holy crow. It was all sorts of craziness, right?
Starting point is 01:03:41 But he's got all sorts of stuff. He's ready to go. Former Philadelphia Eagle, former Dallas Cowboy. Cowboys play this weekend. So we're going to have Orlando on. Can't wait to see him again. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports Radio, FS.

Starting point is 01:07:38 a pleasure. Orlando Scandrick, 12 years in the NFL originally drafted by the Cowboys from Boise State played for the Eagles as well, the Chiefs. He was on last week, made some news. It's great to have him back. Thanks. Thanks for having me back. Absolutely. Let me start with this. We were just talking about, you know, the Gruden Mac trade where guys like me came out and said, man, the whole thing in this sport is you draft a guy. He's great and you pay him. But it does look like at least at this point, they got good value. And the chemistry in the Oakland room is great. I agree. I was one too.
Starting point is 01:08:11 When he traded Khalil, I was like, what? I couldn't. But, I mean, being in the locker room and been in the NFL for so long, at some point, the player has to want to be there. And I don't know the situation and how it transpired with Khalil Mack, but I know Khalil wanted to be paid for his services, and maybe they couldn't see eye to eye on what it was to be paid for his services. So to be able to move on and to get such a great package for him,
Starting point is 01:08:32 it's just looking like in the long term, the Raiders won. Chemistry, I was watching Gruden after the game last night, with the crowd. We know in the NBA chemistry matters. There's one ball and you need three or four great players and the more they can work together and all be stars together are great. In the NFL, you know, we just think the quarterback runs the show, the GM calls the shots. I watch the Raiders and I'm like, this is a team that really enjoys each other.
Starting point is 01:08:57 Oh, absolutely. You can just tell Gruden is just loving, he loves football. You can tell from his Monday night football the way he was broadcasting, the way he just like approaches every day, the way he is. on the sideline, just his body language, his highs and his lows. You can tell he truly loves it and just seeing him go up and down the sideline and how he, his body language, how he moves, you know, how he's up, how he's down. But I mean, he's a true leader. And then to go around after in the black hole and just high-fiving fans and just being that interactive is great to see.
Starting point is 01:09:27 You know, I want to move on to about four different topics here. Let's go. I'm not a believer. I don't think you should ever you try not to humiliate people it doesn't matter if you're a politician if you're a football coach or a player I would never humiliate my players I would bring them in and bark at them I'm not going to do it in front of the guys
Starting point is 01:09:50 that would be my management style I don't like even barking on the sidelines the Cleveland Browns look like they're going to fire Freddie Kitchens it says here so I think it sends a message to the NFL I think it's a bad one like who'd want to work for an owner who keeps banging guys in the middle of the season?
Starting point is 01:10:10 Yeah, I mean, continuity is priceless, but I think when you're wrong, you're wrong. So I'm going to use an analogy to say, if you're going to fire him and you don't think he's the guy, I'm not going to just keep him just because. If he's not my long-term guy, you know, I'm going to move on and I'm going to try and find my long-term guy. Do you think he's not the guy? I don't know. I mean, I don't know much about Coach Kitchens, but I know he's been around this league for a long time, so he knows how this thing works.
Starting point is 01:10:34 But, I mean, I would have had a hard time hiring a guy who, has no head coaching experience. He barely has any offensive coordinating experience. Yeah. When you're in the room, nobody's blaming Freddie. The players aren't. As they shouldn't. They shouldn't.
Starting point is 01:10:48 No, they shouldn't. They got to take accountability. I mean, Freddie hasn't played one snap. He ain't caught a pass. He ain't made a tackle. He's called some plays, but he hasn't executed him. Like, that's not his job. Have you ever been in a locker room where you felt players, at least emotionally,
Starting point is 01:11:03 bailed on the coach? I mean, I don't say emotionally bailed, But, I mean, I played for Wade Phillips in 2009, and I love Coach Phillips. He was my favorite coach when I was in the league. But I think we got to a point where it was just like the message wasn't getting there. You know, we were second-guessing everything. I feel like it was just time for change. And then we get this young offensive coordinator, you know, redhead.
Starting point is 01:11:25 Jason Garrett. And then we get him. And he comes in and he's just, this is how it's going to be. You know, Wade was a great coach. But, you know, I'm the leader of this team now. And, you know, you got half of our season to turn around. and you're going to prove to me who's going to be here long term and you know who's not a part of what we're trying to build.
Starting point is 01:11:40 And there's some real juice in that. I think, yeah, absolutely. Continuity is the best thing, though. Just having Jason be there so long, just look at having Harbaugh being in Baltimore so long, having Andy when he was in Philadelphia so long. And you can see the continuity building in Kansas City right now. That didn't just happen overnight. Yeah, and by the way, Drew Brees, Sean Payton, Pete Carroll, Bill Belichick,
Starting point is 01:12:03 just guys know what they expect. There's a certain system. All right, let's talk about two or three teams. First of all, your Eagles. They're on a buy week. I like them more than you because I like the owner, the GM, the coach, and the quarterback. What do we know about them today? I don't dislike them at all.
Starting point is 01:12:22 I think they got a very, very talented team. They got a tough stretch coming up here. There's two games. It's going to kind of be make or break. Patriots in Seattle. Absolutely. And we're going to see exactly what kind of team they are when you put them up against two of the best. teams in the NFL and they've answered the bell since I came on here on your show and undisputed.
Starting point is 01:12:40 So, you know, I tip my cap to them for that and we'll see what happens going forward. I do think Deshawn Jackson's injuries are problem. I don't think they now scare you on the perimeter. I think Deshawn's one of those guys, even as a decoy, I have to. But if you truly look at their last two games, they've been able to run the ball and pound it and play great defense. I mean, they're not giving up nearly as many big plays as, you know, earlier in a year and they're running it and they're controlling it and you know carson's doing what he has to do to win games but it scares me in the long term if they do have an off game on defense you know can they score enough points they're not really built for that they're
Starting point is 01:13:17 kind of a power running team that does play action to tight ends that's kind of what they are we'll see we'll see how that works in December right exactly let's go to another team you played for you know Kansas City okay um Mahomes is getting healthy am I nuts or is the defense getting better no they're better. I mean, I was just talking to somebody about this. I think the more time they're having that system, the more time, like, they'll just continue to grow and continue to jail together. And I think they got some good players. They're going to be getting back Frank Clark. They got back Chris Jones. And I think that helped a lot. And they're going to be getting back Alex O'Kefo for, you know, from being banged up. And, you know, I think their secondaries, Tyron Matthew, you got the
Starting point is 01:13:53 rookie Thorne Hill, you got Breeland and you got Charverius Ward. So you like their personnel. Yeah, I think that, I mean, they got a great organization over there. They got a great system. They got coaches, you know, that are great coaches. And I think, you know, they're going to do whatever it takes to win. What do you make? Would you play if you were Andy Reid? Would you play Mahomes? My theory, I keep telling Joy. I just keep playing the backup. And as long as we won, I keep Patrick out. No, no. You want him in. I mean, I think that, you know, you got to trust your medical staff. Those people get paid to. And, you know, I don't think Patrick tells you that he's ready and jeopardizes the next 10, 15 years of his career for one game. And I also don't think Andy puts him in there
Starting point is 01:14:31 and jeopardizes the next 10 or 15 years of the franchise. So I think if he's ready, you play them. I don't expect Patrick to be anything less than Patrick. And I'm excited and excited to watch this weekend. Yeah. Orlando Scandrick is joining us here on a Friday in the herd. Let's dive a little deeper to the Cowboys. I said, I can make the argument. You have two great running backs, two coaches that have won a division,
Starting point is 01:14:51 two great linebacking corps, plenty of weapons on the outside. There's a lot of twos that match up. I like Dallas, because I like Dak more. than I like Kirk Cousins. I think Dax more of an it guy in the fourth quarter. Kirk kind of scares me. I mean, I think he has all the talent. He's got a nice arm.
Starting point is 01:15:10 I think he can make all the throws. But it scares me that they don't have any faith in them. They kind of play not to lose instead of to win. I think that's fair. Their play calling can be really conservative. I mean, but I think they're another team that, you know, people don't notice, but they had like three offensive coordinators in the last three years. That's right, because that's right.
Starting point is 01:15:28 When you, do you play Minnesota? Their roster's great, right? They got a good roster, but I mean, I think the difference is going to be. I think Dallas's defensive line is better than Minnesota's offensive line. What do you make a DAC? I love it. Love him. Now, again, he doesn't throw the best ball.
Starting point is 01:15:47 He's a fourth round pick. Go back to the times you've faced him. Was there a moment for you, Orlando? But he can make all the throws from just practicing against him in training camp. The thing that I look at more with Dak is his progress. He's continuously getting better. And I know he's going to continually work to get better. So, man, his upside is, you know, through the roof.
Starting point is 01:16:06 Do most guys, you know, I asked Tony Gonzalez, what's the percentage of guys who were really committed one time? And he said, like, really committed? He's much smaller than you think. I always feel like DAC is all in on football. He is. I would say quarterbacking is a position for 90% of the league. For him, it's a lifestyle.
Starting point is 01:16:23 You don't hear anything, like, bad about him off the field. I mean, he's always positive. He's upbeat. If you look at, I watch the Giants game. and I just watch body language, you know, he throws a interception. He's the first person like, my bad, my bad. Randall Cobb fumbles, he goes to him. You slap someone on the helmet, it's okay, we're going to get it.
Starting point is 01:16:39 I mean, he just stays composed at all times. We were talking about, I want to circle back to the Raiders and the Chargers last night. I like Matt Stafford, and I like Philip Rivers. But now I've seen about 7, 8, 9, 10, 12 years of this stuff. Last night, I know it's a short week. Eight plays, no yards. Philip was wildly inaccurate. They're moving to L.A.
Starting point is 01:17:02 I want you for a second to think you run the chargers. The organization's moving to L.A. They're not selling tickets. One thing in this league that you can't be anymore is unathletic and old quarterback with a below-average O-line. And I don't think you can solve an O-line in a year. Would you move off, Phillip Rivers?
Starting point is 01:17:19 I would. I think moving into a new building, you're already having trouble selling out the stuff up. I think moving into a new building, they're going to finish about 8-and-8, maybe a little bit better. I think, you know, Phil's proven. I think you're going to have a mid to late first round pick.
Starting point is 01:17:33 So I can't, you know, remove him without having somebody to replace him. Yeah. You faced him a few times. I mean, I think Phil still got it. I mean, he missed a few throws last night. You know, a couple of things could have went his way that I did. And the receiver slips on one interception. He sailed a throw on a dig route to Keenan.
Starting point is 01:17:51 He made a few bad decisions. You know, the O line was a little banged up. Russell O'Koongman in and out the lineup all year. And then their other tackle. heavy he misses last night and those guys on his O line they kind of struggled a little bit. They got in some, you know, situations where it was obvious past situations and they struggled with past protection. But I think if you look at last night and look at the positives of the situation, Melvin Gordon looked great. He looked great. The first thing I'm trying to do is I'm trying
Starting point is 01:18:14 to figure out a way that I can resign Melvin Gordon. Then, you know, Phil, he's got a family here. He's been a charger his whole life. You know, I figure out a way to bring him back on something that works. And then I try to improve my support and cast around him. All right. Okay, so we're week eight, week nine in the NFL season. Take me to your career, which was 12 NFL seasons. Are you banged up? You are. Everybody is hurt to some degree at this point. Are you injured?
Starting point is 01:18:39 Probably some. But everybody's banged up, and I think this would show if you're really committed. Are you taking care of your body? Are you getting massages? Are you doing the things like rest and recovery? What would you do on Monday after a game? Massage. What would you do on Tuesday?
Starting point is 01:18:53 Tuesday was like an off day, but I was either going to get like an active lift, some type of lift to get back going. I'm just trying to get my mind right for the week. And then Thursday it's practice. Wednesday. Wednesday is like a full padded practice. So Wednesdays of like a full padded practice. Now when you came into the league, Orlando, were you, was committed or did you learn as a veteran?
Starting point is 01:19:11 I think as I was younger, I mean, I was more hungry and I was more committed. I think as I got older and got a little bit more comfortable, if I can take some things back, I would love to be more committed. What I like to drink a little bit less, party a little bit less. Absolutely. But at the time, I mean, I was living my life. But I was always a committed player. I had a cocktail last night and I have a show today.
Starting point is 01:19:29 I'll never be critical of that. Orlando Scandrick, 12 years in the NFL, 10 with the Dallas Cowboys, Chiefs, Eagles as well. So it's great seeing. I love having you on the show. Thank you for having me. Do you miss the game or you like the broadcasting thing? I do miss the game, obviously, on Sundays,
Starting point is 01:19:44 but I mean, this broadcaster thing is like I like it. I get to still watch it from a different perspective and, you know, I get to just be my authentic self. Appreciate it, ma'am. Thank you. Joy with the news. No, no, no, no. Turn on the news.
Starting point is 01:19:56 This is the herd line news. All right, we guys were just talking about it. Freddie Kitchens and the Browns, not living up to the expectations the team had before the season, and now there's reports that there's an increasing belief that Kitchens could be fired before the end of the season. And even if he's not let go during the season, the consensus around the NFL is that he will be dismissed after the season is over.
Starting point is 01:20:20 I would do that if I had a choice. I'd do that over now. I'm very against firing coaches midseason unless there is some other kind of circumstance involved in the situation. I don't get the point. If you're firing a coach midseason, the only motivation would be, in my mind, is to get ahead of the coaching search for the other terrible teams
Starting point is 01:20:41 that are firing coaches midseason. Because what are you resetting? Is there someone else in the building that's a better option? By the way, so Cleveland Joy hosts the bills. I think they're favored. So if Cleveland won, they'd be two and six. The Steelers are underdogs to the Rams. If they lost, they'd be four and five.
Starting point is 01:21:02 The idea that, and we all know that we're halfway through the season. So they also face five backup quarterbacks in eight weeks. They have a very light schedule for the rest of the season. Like as the light as the league. So if you beat Buffalo on Sunday and the Steelers lose, you're a game out of a potential. You're in the wild card talk. It's not that you're in the wild card talk.
Starting point is 01:21:25 All you have to do is win. We say it all the time. Just win Sunday. That's all there is to it. But the problem is they just lost to the Broncos after a disastrous week. Devastating loss. Devastating loss. Yes. And that's not, there's no disrespect to the Broncos, but the Browns should have won that game.
Starting point is 01:21:42 And now you're in a situation where it's full on panic. And this is what it always is with the Browns. So no one should be surprised. This is the, as you said earlier, the sixth head coach in eight years since Haslam has taken over the team. Yeah. Since 1999, they have had 30 starting quarterbacks. Oh, Lord.
Starting point is 01:21:59 That is the opposite of, whatever the opposite of continuity is chaos. They've had it. It's always chaos in Cleveland. So I don't know why any of us are surprised, myself included, because this is what they do every single year. I would hate to see them fire Freddie Kitchens in the middle of the season. What's the point? What was the difference between Hugh Jackson and Freddie Kitchens?
Starting point is 01:22:17 Hughes more experience. And you had hard knocks. So you felt like you had a deeper intuition into what was. going on with a dysfunction in Cleveland, and we didn't have that this year. They have the same exact record. There's no difference. Don't fire Freddy Kitchens in the middle of the season, please. So the Giants face the Jets this weekend, and that poses a very big problem for the Barclay family.
Starting point is 01:22:38 Sequon's dad is a huge Jets fan, and even Saquan doesn't know which team he's going to be rooting for. He's going to root for his son, Ryan? Well, I don't know. Let's see. Oh, how's my dad going to handle it? Yeah, it's kind of weird because he has a Jets tattoo, so even if he, uh, Where's a Sequan Barkley jersey? He's still reprimped in the Jets. He probably, I think he's going to wear a Jets jersey.
Starting point is 01:22:58 That's going to be an interesting one. But I'll give it to him because it's a Joe Namath. It's going to be, I think I got him in that jersey, actually, the Joe Namath one. But at the end of the day, I know this situation is going to come up about one day, but I'm happy for him, you know. How was the Jets fan growing up too? So it's fun. It's going to be a little fun competition in Barclayhouse.
Starting point is 01:23:19 It's interesting. When you grow up in that city, I've always found this fascinating. fascinating. Goulet, you grew up by New York. This is fascinating. So you have the Yankees that are the gold standard of the sport and you become a Mets fan. And you have the giants who have won multiple Super Bowls and you're a Jets fan. At some point, wouldn't you just say, you know, green and blue are not that different? I'm just changing uniforms. Wouldn't you go with the winning side? No, that's not how it works. That is not how it works. That is not how it works. Yeah, this is serious. Seeklon and Barclays ad actually has a Jets tattoo. We have a picture of it. It's like he is a he is a true. You got a root for your... You got a root for your kid. Yeah. I mean, so Sequin was born in the Bronx. His family's from the Bronx, and he idolized Curtis Martin growing up.
Starting point is 01:24:01 It's just, this is funny to me because my brothers were from Pittsburgh, obviously. So anytime anything would happen with the Steelers and the Dolphins when he was playing, it was like this huge, not conflict, because obviously you're going to root for Jason, but it was like my aunt was still wear her Steelers jersey. It's a thing because it's, this is what fans are. It's a real conflict. And that's probably why for me, it's easy for me to be fans of both teams
Starting point is 01:24:27 because, you know, I got to root for my brother. I was a Jets fan for one year. Yeah, sure. It was a great year. Yeah. I loved it. Rex Ryan and it was fun. Finally, we love these.
Starting point is 01:24:36 There's not a lot of love for the Lakers outside of L.A. right now. According to Geotagg, Twitter data, gathered by Sportsinsider.com, the Lakers are the most hated NBA team this season. The website tracked over 100,000 tweets using phrases like, I hate the and insert the team to determine the most hated team.
Starting point is 01:24:56 So it's very scientific. But there's a lot of Golden State in there, too, still lingering. I think that's probably going to go away by next year. Yeah. There's not a whole lot to hate going on right now. The most hated team in California is the clippers. I find them incredibly likable. Well, I mean, it's Lakers fans mad at Kaua.
Starting point is 01:25:15 Yeah, you're right. You're right. There you go. That explains it. And Baltimore. That's all that is. I mean, the Lakers, people hate dynasties. We don't really hate it because, you know, the ratings and the way that the leaks go.
Starting point is 01:25:28 It's obviously they don't. You notice where the Lakers are hated, a lot of places out west that have looked up at the Lakers for like Portland and Seattle and the Dallel. All the Texas teams hate the LAT. That's a lot of envy. That's not a hate map. That's an envy map. There's a little pop of rockets in there too, which is interesting and fun. But these are always funny to me.
Starting point is 01:25:48 They always flip depending on really where LeBron. is. Sure. It's a LeBron hate now. When the entire country, hated hate, like it was only, only Florida was the only team rooting for the heat. I remember that.
Starting point is 01:26:00 It was like astronomical. Yeah, joy with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Heard Lye News. Two things, I'll address load management where we're all being sort of hypocrites with Kauai Leonard.
Starting point is 01:26:15 And there is a team, you know, NBA is the year of the duos. It's actually becoming. after last night, the NFL's becoming the year of the duos. We'll explain. It's kind of cool that's coming up next. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific. My cousins went to West Point. Who did? My cousins.
Starting point is 01:30:41 It's one of the most amazing places in America, West Point, New York. I made the drive a couple of different times and you go through the woods and it's on the Hudson and it's on a point and the buildings are all made out of granite there's a hotel there made out of like granite it's very very windy the British are coming around the corner they built it on a point it's been there it was I think it was commissioned back in the 1800s very impressive it's an incredibly and in the fall the show is going to look amazing Sunday on Fox it just it is one of the places in America with the cadets It is, I mean, you're there and you're like, I'm part of American history. It's unbelievable.
Starting point is 01:31:22 So, you know, this year in the NBA has been the year of the duos. And, you know, you have two stars all over the place. And it's actually, after last night's Raider win, it's becoming the NFL the year of the duos. So it's pretty interesting. You have in the AFC, the Patriots and Bills have separated, the Ravens, the Steelers, the Texans, the Colts, and the Chiefs and now the Raiders have all kind of separated from the rest of the division. In the NFC, the Cowboys Eagles, Packers, Vikings, Saints, Panthers, Niners, Seahawks. The one exception that is not a duo that I think is going to make a real push to make the
Starting point is 01:31:57 playoffs is going to be the Rams at 5 and 3. I think they win this weekend. It was part of my Blazing 5. I think since they acquired Jalen Ramsey, Dante Fowler's played great. Aaron Donald's still a beast. I think it's a defensive-led team. They have the deepest receiving core. Their offensive line is healthier.
Starting point is 01:32:12 and they're going to now start moving around and using their rookie running back. And I do believe that not only schedules matter, I can get obsessed on these, but head coaches and quarterbacks matter. Who do you face? If you look at the Rams over the next month, they face Mason Rudolph, Mitch Trubisky, young Lamar Jackson, and Kyler Murray. Some are talented. They're all young and experienced, and this defense is playing great.
Starting point is 01:32:37 Seattle, conversely, on a defense that is struggling of late, faces in order. Garoppolo in San Francisco, Carson Wentz in Philadelphia, Kirk Cousins, and then Jared Gough and Sean McVey. So I think over the next month, it's going to be very easy in the year of the duo in the NBA and NFL. I think the Rams are that one team in third place. They're very good off-bys. Outside of the Super Bowl, McVeigh has owned the AFC, 10-0.
Starting point is 01:33:04 I do think the NFC is better than the AFC. And so it's a very big game this weekend. I like the Rams. It's one of the games I really, really like. I like good coaches off buys. Mangini talked about it earlier. Rams beat the Steelers. All right.
Starting point is 01:33:17 So last night in the NBA, it's a lot of controversy. I should love controversy. Load management, which, by the way, as Joy and I talked about earlier, Kauai Leonard sits out. Then last night he comes in plays. Rested plays great, dominates the fourth. It wasn't a big deal until they gave it the name,
Starting point is 01:33:35 load management. Anytime you give something a name, stretching, yoga, now it's a phenomenon. At one point, we had the pet rock. for about two years we were into rocks because we called it the pet rock Pilates. It's pliability. We all want to be pliable. Pilates. Okay, now it's a culture.
Starting point is 01:33:53 So we got a name for it now and everybody's freaking out and Charles Barkley does not like this sitting out stuff at all. There's minor injuries and there's major injuries. Check. Check. It takes 24 to 48 hours. You know that. It ain't the flu, fool. Chuck, you know that.
Starting point is 01:34:10 No, stop a check. Binary injuries take 24 to 48 hours. Jack, listen, listen, just say you don't want the kid playing back to back. Let's just be honest with the fans and with ESP. I don't know what's wrong with them. Listen, let's be fair. So you don't think there's an injury? I do not.
Starting point is 01:34:24 All right. I would prefer guys don't sit out, okay? I don't think it's good optics. I think a lot of NBA fans, it's expensive. I don't like you. I mean, I was a kid. I drove to son. I didn't drive.
Starting point is 01:34:36 I was driven to Sonics games. I want a downtown Freddie Brown, Dennis Johnson, and Jack Sickb. and Gus Williams to play. If I'd have shown up and down, I mean, I love downtown. I mean, Stephen A. Smith once said that was his favorite player growing up. Downtown Freddie Brown. It was mine. So if I drove to the game and didn't see him, I'd be bummed out.
Starting point is 01:34:53 I like my stars playing. If I drove to a Seahog game and Russell Wilson, they'll play. That doesn't make me happy. That's why I'm going to the game. We all, you know, young people now like stars more than teams. Research shows that young sports fans, they don't care about the thunder. They liked Westbrook. They don't care about the Warriors.
Starting point is 01:35:08 They like Steph. you go to games for players in the NBA. You really do. You don't go for the shield. That's the NFL. You don't go in the summer to a baseball game because your grandfather did. You go to the NBA because you want to see stars. And I don't think the optics are good.
Starting point is 01:35:23 Consumer is being rewarded. But let me just say this. Charles Barkley, in his prime, I'll just, the number of games he played, 67, 75, 76, 65, 68, and 71. And then he got a little old and it went down to 53. I like Chuck. But you know what it was called? Tired, sore, hammy, knee hurt.
Starting point is 01:35:45 The minute we called it load management, people freaked out. I mean, that's part of it. Charles Barkley was a guy. He took a lot of games off. But nobody called it anything. It was just called a partied hard last night in New York. I want Philadelphia game off. Here's the other thing, is that once you become, the NBA is a star-driven league,
Starting point is 01:36:03 once you become arguably the best player in this league, boy, the microscope heats up. People for years were like, you know, NBA, stars are too political. No, LeBron was into politics. Damian Lillard didn't want to talk politics. Yonis didn't want to talk politics. Chris Paul wasn't talking politics. Blake Griffin wasn't talking politics.
Starting point is 01:36:25 Westbrook wasn't talking politics. James Hardin wasn't talking politics. No, LeBron talked politics. And because he was the best player in the microscopes on him, everybody's like, oh, everybody talked politics. No, no, no, it was just LeBron. By the way, load management. Okay, so now Kauai is arguably the best player.
Starting point is 01:36:43 The microscopes on him because he's threatening LeBron, just like LeBron threatened MJ. And everybody's like, way, load management. Russell Westbrook took a game off this week. Load management. Nobody cared. Why? Because we don't consider him the best player.
Starting point is 01:36:58 So this is a star-driven league. And when you are the best player, for a brief time it was Dr. Jay and then it was Kareem and then it was magic. and then it was, you know, Magic and Bird and Kobe, and we knew about their private lives. And now you add Twitter and social media and load management. And this is just what happens. Guys have been taking time off forever.
Starting point is 01:37:16 But they weren't the best player in the game. And once in this Star-Driven League, you become the best player. I mean, guys have been going to strip clubs forever. Why do I know James Hardin does? There's probably a guy that's a backup on Houston that goes more than James Hardin. But in a star-driven league, we are obsessed about the guy who threatens the guy And Kauai now is threatening LeBron James. I do think Kauai right now for this second, I don't know how long it will last, is the best player in the game.
Starting point is 01:37:43 If I need a bucket, I'd take Kauai over LeBron. If I need a stop, I'd take Kauai over LeBron. But I think we have done this, that we look at an individual, and if he leads an industry, and this individual has a habit or a theme or a strong belief, we think the industry does. LeBron talk politics. 99% of these players don't want to talk politics. They don't want the blowback. By the way, Kauai is doing load management. 90% of these players aren't doing low advantagement.
Starting point is 01:38:09 Everybody in this league has missed seven games. That's kind of in the NBA a season starts. And Kobe's like, you know, when Kobe gets to a point, Kobe's like, okay, can I take the road game off before the All-Star break so I get an extra day? Can I take the last road game of the year in Phoenix off? Can I take this is what players do. They circle it.
Starting point is 01:38:28 They give it to a team president. I mean, this is such a star-driven league. I'm told James Harden tells Mike Dantone. Dan Tony goes to Hardin. Can we practice tomorrow here? Yeah. When's the team playing taken off? They'd clear it with James.
Starting point is 01:38:42 That doesn't mean James is a bad guy, but that's the league. How's your star feeling? And this was all negotiated by Kauai Leonard. It was all negotiated. Okay, the Clippers aren't complaining about this. They sat down in Malibu. Doc Rivers, Jerry West. I'm not sure if Balmer was there.
Starting point is 01:38:57 I think it was the basketball guys with Kauai. And Kauai said, I'll come if you get Paul George, keep Lou Williams on the bench. And I can, you know, take 20 games off. And they were like, check, check, check. We're all good. We're all good. I mean, do I think it's, you know, great optically?
Starting point is 01:39:12 I think it's terrible. But we're all good. Nobody's not going to hurt the NBA long term at all. Trust me, if that sport became available on the open market, networks would be lining up. This one included to buy it. We would. Don't be that guy in the room in the long, sloppy-looking untuck shirt.
Starting point is 01:39:31 Go to untucket.com. The code is heard 20% off. H-E-R-D. Our 3. Brady Quinn stops by LSU, Alabama. Chase Young-Story, Brady Quinn plus Jason McIntyre. Tomorrow's headlines today.

Panthers and Packers is one of the Sunday matchups this week. Colin, help us win some money this weekend, give us a winner and a final score. Oh, I'll take Carolina to cover Green Bay to win 28, 26. That's a lot of points to give a good defense. That'll be a good game. That'll be a good game.
Starting point is 01:40:23 By the way, Discover at Miles card, 35,000 miles becomes 70, potentially. Discover at Miles card. Discover.com slash travel. new card members only. Let's bring on Brady Quinn. I love having Brady on. We don't get him very often because he's busy. He's on the road.
Starting point is 01:40:37 He's doing stuff. He's doing prep. Eight years in the NFL, Browns, Broncos, Chiefs, Jets, Rams, college football guy for our network. Big Noon kickoff. That's been a home run show. Congratulations.
Starting point is 01:40:47 By the way, Patrick Mahomes is going to start Sunday against the Titans, folks. We'll get to that in a second. Let's start with Alabama, LSU. This is interesting. In the NFL, there's kind of a sense. You're hurt play. Right.
Starting point is 01:40:58 In college, you're hurt. You're going to be a number one pick. I don't know. There is a little thing here. Do you think Nick's a little uncomfortable with it? Bama's a little uncomfortable knowing he's not right. I think they're probably a little uncomfortable with thinking to themselves, can they beat this team, right?
Starting point is 01:41:15 And if they can't or if he wasn't to play, could they still absorb a loss and get in the playoffs? I think that would be the concern here. I don't know with their schedule. I mean, look, Auburn's a good team. They're going to play them in the Iron Bowl at the end of the year. But I think if they lost to LSU, they could potentially put themselves in a position to be on.
Starting point is 01:41:31 the outside looking in, especially considering you still have a Georgia team that's in the mix, right? And even if they were, obviously, if they were to lose different story, but I don't know. I'm not sure if they could based on the strength of schedule and some of the other teams out there that are in the mix, especially in Ohio State, Penn State. I think we've seen now, they look at the Big Ten as one of the best conferences, if not the best, with six teams being in the top 25. And obviously, Ohio State is number one. Yeah, I mean, Oklahoma may not lose again. But that might not help Oklahoma. I mean, you've got the Pact 12 position ahead of them right now.
Starting point is 01:42:06 Yeah, Oregon beat Washington and Seattle. They beat USC. Who do they play? Do they have? Well, that's the thing with both Oregon and Utah, even though they're ahead of Oklahoma. If you look at the rest of their games, they're not going to play another ranked opponent until they would play each other. Assuming that the Pact 12 doesn't mess things up with.
Starting point is 01:42:23 I mean, really the state of Arizona. They both got to play, I believe, Arizona. And then one of them's got to play Arizona State. But do you like, if Tua plays, do you like, I like Bama? because to me, Nick Saban's coached in, I think it's 18 games in the series, he's one 14. He's off a buy, which so is Ed, but off a buy, I think Nick's hard to beat. I like Bamf to a plays. Well, look at their schedule before the buy.
Starting point is 01:42:43 You know, they've kind of been able to focus on this one maybe a little bit more too than LSU has because of that schedule that they've got to play through. That's part of it. I think the other thing is everyone's had such a hard time matching up with Alabama. They've actually faced the second fewest snaps of man to man, any form of man to man. any form of man to man. Really? Yeah, because no one can play them in man-to-man coverage.
Starting point is 01:43:03 Well, the receiving core is absurd. You're going to see probably three first-round picks out of that group. All right, I would imagine Judy is going to be one of the first, if not. He's probably going to be the best Y-Receiver prospect in this class will probably be a top-10 pick. Waddle's going to be somewhere behind. So we'll Ruggs. Ruggs will actually probably go ahead of Waddle, Smith eventually as well. So this is as loaded of a group as you've ever seen.
Starting point is 01:43:24 And it's one of the reasons why you're looking at an Alabama offense, that's really led by the past, not so much they're run anymore. I mean, this is a different offense. This is a different challenge for a lot of defenses now. So as Alabama faces zone defenses, because that's almost the way you have to play them. Does that, as a quarterback, does that help the running game? If I know I'm going in facing zones. I don't know that it necessarily helps the running game.
Starting point is 01:43:48 I would say if you run a lot of RPO's, which Alabama does, it does then, right? Yeah, but Tua can't run a ton of those now with his leg, right? Well, but here's the misconception with an RPO. an RPO, you know, the broader term, right, run pass options. So everyone up front's blocking the run and you've got a run called. But then it doesn't necessarily mean the quarterback has to be a part of that rushing attack if he decides to keep it. It just means you have to have other passing routes involved too to give you the pass option as part of that. So when you're watching a lot of the tape, if they're playing against a lot of zone coverage,
Starting point is 01:44:16 if those backers, those safeties, you know, in the front seven, if those guys get nosy and come up, you're going to have big time voids, whereas versus man-to-man coverage a little bit more tricky, right? that route might get impacted because of the press man-to-man, or there's going to be a guy trailing him where you're not going to have as big of a window to throw, and that's the difference between man-in-zone. But again, if you want to play man-to-man coverage, they can just run a gold old-fashioned go route,
Starting point is 01:44:38 beach it downfield all day long because they're that talented on the outside. Who's the best team, though, you've seen this year? Ohio State. I mean, I wouldn't even second-guess that. I mean, people were second-guessing what their strength of schedule has been compared to LSU. And it's fair to a certain degree, but I also think Ohio State's been the more complete team
Starting point is 01:44:55 all year long. I mean, when looking at all three phases the way they've played, I would say that team, and I saw them in training camp, and I remember walking away from that training camp call and saying that team looks different. And it's not just the fact that they've got big-time caliber guys, like a Chase Young, for example, and I'm sure we're going to talk about him in a minute. Justin Fields is a remark, but they've got depth. You know, but they've got depth. You know, they can rotate in this front, this front seven, and the front in particular, because they have so much depth and they've done such a good job recruiting. Obviously, coach Meyer for many years and I'm sure Ryan Day will continue that on.
Starting point is 01:45:27 Chase Young did not borrow money from an agent. It was a family member. He paid it back. Full disclosure, total honesty. It feels like it maxed a one game suspension. I think the kid had some financial hardships, didn't go through an agent, paid it all back. This could have probably never been uncovered. He brought it up. What is your takeaway on it? Yeah, they self-reported it, right?
Starting point is 01:45:46 And so obviously they realized there could have been something wrong, so they self-reported it. And I think they're trying to handle it in hopes that that's, the NCAA won't take a much harsher approach. However, I mean, being a Notre Dame alum and watching what they did a few years ago, because of what a former student athletic trainer helping out some players, and then
Starting point is 01:46:05 basically vacating 21 victories, which was extremely harsh, considering there was no institutional instability. There wasn't any sort of issue like that. And they had self-reported it, yet they still got punished that manner. If Chase Young didn't play in two weeks against Penn State, does it change the outlook to you? Oh, I think it does.
Starting point is 01:46:21 I mean, there's no doubt. Because it's going to change how Penn State looks at playing Ohio State. If Chase Young's on the field, every single time you line up, you're, okay, where's he at? Because if it's a pass play, we either have to slide the line, we have to put a tight end to make it a longer path for him to get there, or maybe he chips him on the way out, or he's a running back to chip on the way out.
Starting point is 01:46:40 Even if it's the run game, I mean, he's a complete player, and that's why he's such a bulletproof prospect. And to be honest with you, there's probably a lot of people at the NFL level they're like, it's not the worst thing in the world if he doesn't play the rest of the year, right? Bosa, same thing. There's probably some people who feel that way, especially people who are picking at the top
Starting point is 01:46:57 or project to be picking the top of next year's draft. One more college question. I don't think Clemson's overrated. I think they remind me the Florida Gator team that won a national championship in basketball years ago with four NBA guys. And the following year, they were bored out of their mind. Then the tournament happened.
Starting point is 01:47:12 And you're like, oh, they shifted gears. And they were losing regular season games. I think Clemson will pop once the games matter. I don't know that it really matters. they slip up, right? I mean, that's what this is about. We know how good Clemson can be, but each year's different. Every year's a new year. And I think this group just got off to a much slower start. I don't think their offensive line was playing as well as people had noticed. And their defensive line had a ton of people to replace. Sure, but they've actually done a pretty good job
Starting point is 01:47:38 replacing them. And their defense has played well this year. That hasn't been the issue with this team. In my opinion, it has been more of the offensive line play. It was the lack of a consistent rushing attack. It was obviously some poor throws and decisions by Trevor Lawrence, which again, he's young. I mean, we're going to see it from time of time. Sophomore. True sophomore. I was in that position. It's a tough position to be in and you're still going to have your inconsistencies. But they'll be just fine.
Starting point is 01:48:00 But I think if they lose, now they're in jeopardy. And again, with where the college football playoff committee put them at five instead of four, it goes to show you they're giving teams credit for the non-conference schedule that they've played and what they've done so far. By the way, the all-time Notre Dame passing yard and passing touchdown leader, Brady Quinney's great on our show. Big Noon.
Starting point is 01:48:17 Kickoff on Fox two weeks from now. it's Ohio State, Penn State, which visually is one of the last few. I remember, was it last year, Gus and Joel or the year before. It was the best football game. I think college or probably watched on TV. Stadium was absurd. Right. It always is.
Starting point is 01:48:33 That was one of the things. It was fun taking, you know, Matt and Reggie out there. And Matt had been before, but it was Reggie's first time. Because when we went there for Ohio State, Wisconsin, you know, it was raining outside and we got there early. And, you know, we'd been to some other places. I'm not going to say where specifically, but people were already out tailgating at 7 a.m. I was like, look, man, it's Ohio.
Starting point is 01:48:50 Football's a little different here. It's a little more part of the culture here. So when you get up there, you're going to see there there's going to be 100,000 deep sit in the stands, even with ponchos on, rain or shine, they show up. Let's talk about Ohio. You were drafted by the Browns. You know, the Freddie Kitchen situation.
Starting point is 01:49:05 I'm not a huge fan of humiliating coaches or players. Midseason firings is almost an impeachment for a coach. Could you make an argument it maybe is okay? Well, I'd say if behind closed doors, there's some things going on. that just aren't acceptable in a work environment or within any team. It doesn't appear that way from the outside,
Starting point is 01:49:24 but again, I'm not in that locker room. So I don't know what sort of discussions are happening or what's going on at practice or in some of those meetings. So if they did firing them during the season, that's usually why you end up seeing that. It's just chaos behind the scenes. It's chaos behind the scenes. They're having a hard time controlling the personalities.
Starting point is 01:49:39 And I don't think that's the case with this team. I mean, we haven't heard that much from Odell. That was the biggest concern. Actually, Odell, despite the watch and visor, verbally, he's just played. Yeah, he's just gone out and played. And look, he struggled, but so has everyone else. This offense has really struggled. Baker struggled.
Starting point is 01:49:54 And it all comes down to the same thing we talk about, the battle in the trenches. I mean, that's what it comes down to. Their offensive line has not played well. They haven't helped him out. You know, he hasn't been as good either. I'm not going to let him off the hook for that. But, you know, that's the challenge, too, as he's a young player in this league trying to grow and people have got a lot of tape and a lot of things they saw from him last year
Starting point is 01:50:11 where now they're trying to exploit some of those weaknesses. But I think the only the only other reason why you would want to make a change is if you're Jimmy Haslam and Dee Haslam. And even though they've got a terrible track record of, you know, getting rid of coaches and just kind of turning over very fast, if you feel like you've made a mistake, I think in this league now, one of the things that separates Bill Belichick from everyone else is, is when he makes it, when he decides he's made a mistake, he moves on. Like he doesn't, he doesn't hang on to a player.
Starting point is 01:50:39 He doesn't keep them that much longer. He just moves on. He moves in a different direction. And there's something to be said for that. So if Jimmy and Dee Haslam feel like he's not the right guy for the job, they made a mistake. You know, I think it would make some sense. The problem is because their track record, now you look at the next candidate and you say, who wants that job then? Exactly. Right? Like who goes in there? I think there's any sort of stability. Otherwise, paying them a ton of money. And so they've got
Starting point is 01:51:03 some financial security. That's really all you could offer them at that point. And maybe a talented roster to work with. Patrick Mahomes just announced we'll start against Tennessee. He's not 100%. Go back to your career. How often were you 100%. Well, I had a foot injury, I had a Liz Frank injury, which is something that kind of Cam Newton's dealing with. Yeah, it's awful. And I finally, I didn't have surgery on it. I wish I would have. But I've been saying this in talking in regards to Cam Newton, whereas if he's in doubt dealing with a Liz Frank, get the surgery.
Starting point is 01:51:32 Like there's no reason to put it off. What is the Liz Frank? The Liz Frank is a ligament across your midfoot. And basically it helps keeping your toes or what's called your metatarsals from separating. So imagine your first toe and your second toe, and that ligament that helps them, you know, hold together being torn. Yeah, it's painful, it creates instability. You know, for me, I struggle with my motion, right? Because as you transfer and you step to that left foot, you'd kind of fall away a little
Starting point is 01:51:57 bit because you didn't want to put too much pressure on it because it's going to hurt. Subconsciously, you deal with that kind of stuff. But for Patrick Mahomes, you know, I love the fact that he's going out there and playing. I think they obviously need him if they want to win a Super Bowl. But it's a big decision to make. And look, if he's not going to be at any greater risk and everything that I've read and seen, it doesn't sound like he's at any greater risk now coming back to play as far as re-injuring it or having the same injury, then move forward and go do it, right?
Starting point is 01:52:24 And that's one of the reasons why I think everyone on that team loves him, the organization loves them, and it's one of the reasons why he's going to have paid a lot of money when it's all said and done. Yeah. Finally, Mitch Trubisky this week. I'm turning the TVs off in the facility. It's very negative. And I defended him. I said, listen, man, I don't read my mentions on Twitter most of the time because I have opinions.
Starting point is 01:52:43 However they land, they land. I don't want to get into squabbles and screw myself esteem up and be second-guessing my opinions. I mean, when you were struggling in the NFL and you're a young quarterback and you really need, not yes, man, you need support. Can you validate him just saying, I don't want to hear this debate show noise all day? Yeah, you can validate that, but, you know, he's in a different era now. I mean, you really can't escape it with social media and everything else that's going on. I mean, social media was just coming about, and it was kind of so new and foreign that I really didn't know, how to use it. I really didn't pay much attention to it. I remember being in college and having
Starting point is 01:53:19 the Facebook and thinking to myself, why would anyone want to advertise what they're doing socially, right? It was called the Facebook, right? When we first got at Notre Dame was the Facebook. And I was like, this is just an awful idea. So I was there, I'm still to this day. I'm not a part of it. But, you know, the only thing I'd say about turning the TVs off now is if you're turning them off now, you probably should have turned them off last year too. Yeah. Right? Because you've got to block them out in good and bad. Because you can also. listen to your praise is too much. And maybe that happened a little bit this offseason with this team.
Starting point is 01:53:48 And now they haven't been really able to figure out how to win this year. Or I should say at times, too, how to not lose games. Because there's two different ways of playing that. And I think there's a lot of teams in the NFL who figure out how to win, but then they also don't figure out how to lose games at times too. And that's why, again, the New England Patriots always are the standard because they know how to win and they know not how to lose too. It's great having you.
Starting point is 01:54:08 Your terrific broadcaster, Brady Quinn, big noon kickoff tomorrow, Fox, 11 a. Urban Reggie, Matt Brady, and Rob Stone. And I just love, you're just a terrific broadcaster. I just love listening to you and watching you. We didn't even get the chance to talk about the story when I was ineligible for like four hours one year. You what would you do? Well, I'll make the long story short. It's really not that long.
Starting point is 01:54:27 I went to visit a professor. He said I could park behind him because there's no spaces so I could block him in. And I remember going in, we probably met for about 30 minutes. When I came back outside, my car was up on a tow truck. Someone had called a tow the car. And so, you know, I'm a college kid. I was working at that time. I think I had a job one day a week at, it was the Office of News and Information.
Starting point is 01:54:47 And I didn't have enough cash on me. Because, you know, once those wheels were off the ground, it's gone. And don't give you wrong. Like, my car was a POS. So he could have taken it and he wanted to be able to get much for it anyway. But, you know, I was trying to get him to get it down. And the press said, look, I'll grab some cash. I'll pay for it.
Starting point is 01:55:02 You'll be good. That way you can get your car and you can kind of move on to class. Well, it got reported into compliance at Notre Dame. And they self-reported. And then I get a call in class. It was back when you had the razor phone. right, little flip phones. And so I keep getting a call from Charlie Weiss.
Starting point is 01:55:15 I'm going, man, what does he call me for? He knows him in class right now. So I walk out, flip the phone up. He's like, hey, you're ineligible. You know, what happened this morning? He's asked for the explanation. And I didn't realize I did anything wrong, especially because the professor told me to park there.
Starting point is 01:55:28 So I ended up having to go to the Notre Dame Federal Credit Union. I got a check. I had to make the check out for, I think, double whatever the amount was. It was like 80 bucks or something to get it down. So I had to get, I had to pay like 160 bucks. I had to donate it to a 5-1-1-6. to a charity. It just so happened to be that the donation went to
Starting point is 01:55:46 Hannah and Friends, which Charlie Weiss is charity. So I ended up being able to practice later on that day and be eligible, but it was the only time my life where I was ever kind of show. Four hours of ineligibility. Yeah, sitting in class trying to pay attention by thinking to myself, like, am I going to be ineligible for the game? How's this going to work? And again, it wasn't anything
Starting point is 01:56:02 that I would, you know, consciously did. It was trying to get around anything. I just didn't have cash on me at the time. I was parking where a professor told me to park. But that's how the NCAA works, right? That's all these things. Isn't it good to know, though, that he drove a POS in college just like the rest of us? No, I had to get in through the passengers. It was a two-door Ford Explorer Sport.
Starting point is 01:56:20 I had to get in through the passenger side. And for whatever reason, I had to put the car always so I could put it in drive because it wouldn't go in reverse sometimes. So if I was with, like, you know, if I was with my girlfriend at the time and we got in and I had to back out, it went back out. I was like, all right, well, I guess we're walking. They were showing a video of a player, I think two weeks ago at Notre Dame, his car didn't go in reverse. Isn't it great to know that Notre Dame's quarterback? He drove what everybody else drove. Jason's car in college did not have a back seat.
Starting point is 01:56:48 My car at times when I drive, because at the time I was dating girls, she was in Miami of Ohio. So I drive, it was like a four-hour drive to go see her. It would sound like when I was in the highway, like it was a plane taking off. And I'm looking at everything. I'm like, the RPMs aren't going up.
Starting point is 01:57:02 I have no idea what the sound is. Is the car going to explode at some point? But it was, it actually made it. I never had any chance. I drove a GMC pacer. It had so much mold in it that a friend of mine got in it. And he was majoring in something with medicine. And he was like, dude, that's mold.
Starting point is 01:57:19 You could die. It's toxic. He goes, that's toxic mold in your car. And I'm like, I was just going to grow pot back there or something. My car, my back, my roof in the back was all green. It was like there was a, this is college folks. Sounds like a better environment for mushrooms, by the way, as opposed to pot. I'm from Washington State.
Starting point is 01:57:36 I've heard about that. Joy with the news. Thanks, Brady. No, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. All right, so now we know Patrick Mahomes will start. Cool.
Starting point is 01:57:48 Andy Reid has announced that Patrick Mahomes will start for the Chief Sunday against the Titans unless something happens. So not sure what that means, but he was a full participant in practice this week. And he missed just two games with a dislocated kneecap, which is kind of incredible. That's how I tore my ACL was dislocating my kneecap. Is it painful? Not extremely. I mean, yes, but I've been in worse pain. It's more of like a buzz.
Starting point is 01:58:11 But anyway, Matt Moore went one-on-one in Mahom's absence, which is great. Can't ask for more than that. After losing to the Packers and being the Vikings. Now their schedule coming up, it's kind of interesting. They're at the Chargers after this week, at the Titans this weekend, at the Chargers. Then they have a buy. Then they have the Raiders at home at the Patriots, which will be the big game. A lot of interesting games, though.
Starting point is 01:58:32 Yes. Broncos at home, at the Bears and Chargers. So a lot of indivision games, which is, you know, be something to watch because the Raiders are now five and four. Patrick Mahalms back. Nick Foll's back. It's fun. Good time. All right. Now I teased it earlier.
Starting point is 01:58:45 It's a very, very important moments. You can now add the herd to your social media. We have GIFs made now. Colin and I got the chance to record some of these. And they are now available on Jiffie and Instagram stories. Oh, my. By the way, they're called Jiffies? I call them GIF.
Starting point is 01:59:05 Jif, GIF. It's an ongoing debate. I don't get crazy about to do one of them. All you do That's my Mary J You can just put in The herd Colin Cowherd
Starting point is 01:59:17 Joy Taylor And these will come up On your Instagram stories So you can You can add them And share them With your friends And our logos

If you can't, if you want the full version of this behind the scenes video, which is worth your time, it's on our Twitter page and Instagram as well. You're in your Zique. Yes. It was very fun to see you out of your element there. Joy to tell on the news. Well, that's the news.
Starting point is 01:59:57 And thanks for stopping by. The Herd Live News. All right, tomorrow's headline today. We love that. That always makes me laugh. Tomorrow's headlines today. That's coming up with Jason McIntyre. Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd, Weekdays and noon Easter.
Starting point is 02:00:09 9 a.m. Pacific. Feel better with MDrive. MDrive for men.com. Code Hurd, 20% off your first month, elevates your T-levels. Jason McIntyre, formed the big lead, sold it for a fortune.
Starting point is 02:00:19 Now, uh, kind of plays tennis, hangs out with his kids and razzes me and bets football. Why are you ducking me on tennis still? You know what? I don't think you're a good hang with tennis. You hit lob moonshots. I am like fetter. I want lasers. Yeah.
Starting point is 02:00:33 You want to tell the audience what the score was? Yeah. All right. I won't do the moonshots anymore. I did the wrong thing, people. Are you listening out there? I made cowherd run around, right? I like hitting bombs. It's not really fair. Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 02:00:44 All right. He likes sitting on the baseline. So what we do is we take the big stories of the weekend. What will tomorrow's headlines be? So what will the headline be after the LSU Alabama game tomorrow's headline today? Well, you know, Alabama's dominated this series, won eight straight over LSU. I believe the headline will be the tides have turned. I like LSU here, Colin.
Starting point is 02:01:08 I mean, when you look at LSU's ethos over the last decade, it's run the football, big 10 style, right? Three yards in a cloud of dust. That's just not what they are now. And people who haven't really watched them, this is the fourth highest scoring team in the country. Joe Burrow is just a machine. They scored the last four meetings with Alabama, 26 points.
Starting point is 02:01:28 Combined. They got shut out twice. They could have that going into the fourth quarter. I think LSU is the side here, Colin. I know you like Bama. I've heard, you know, from people who are going to be at the game that Tua's not going to start. He wants to play and will play, but he won't start the game.
Starting point is 02:01:43 Do you trust the backup quarterback, Mack Jones against LSU in the biggest game of the year? I still think they could win close. I will say that Gary Danielson, I think, Joy, you had this earlier. I trust Gary Danielson. He works for CBS, SEC guys, great. He said Tua, he went to practice and he's not 100%. So, you know, listen, if I know Tua can't move, is it now, LSU also lost one of their best linebackers.
Starting point is 02:02:10 That was a weird moment. Now, let me ask you this. If you're Tua, are you playing in a regular season game when in, you know, five games from now, you're going to be a top five pick. Well, millions and millions of dollars. As a quarterback, yes. If I was a running back, maybe it's different. As a quarterback, I think you, that's part of what you sign up for.
Starting point is 02:02:26 All right, tomorrow's headlines today, Vikings Cowboys game. Ooh, tasty games Sunday night. Everybody wants to fade Kirk Cousins. Prime time, he stinks. I believe the headline will be. The Dalvin Cook's, the Dallas defense. Minnesota here has to be the side, Colin. I know, and I heard you earlier talking a little bit about Kirk Cousins versus Dack,
Starting point is 02:02:47 and you like Dak better, which I find crazy. Let me ask you this. Who do you like better, Mike Zimmer or Jason Garrett? I think Jason Garrett's a better communicator. I think Mike Zimmer's a better defensive guy in big games. I think it's a toss-up. So Mike Zimmer, awful loss in his career with the Vikings, 23 and 8 against the spread.
Starting point is 02:03:08 He is amazing bouncing back. And then when he steps out of the division, when you're not used to seeing these defensive schemes and the running game they've got, they obliterate teams. I mean, and Dallas, all they've beaten is they're 4-0 in the division, right, against the Giants and the Redskins.
Starting point is 02:03:23 They did beat the Eagles, but so do the Vikings. They're one and three outside of the division, and their one win is against Miami. I'm still not buying Dallas. I know you enjoy like them. I think Dalvin Cook's in line for a big game. Your guy, Van der Resh, He's supposedly still injured, may not play this week.
Starting point is 02:03:40 I like the Vikings here. All right. Tomorrow's headlines today. Bill's Browns game. Browns killed me again last week here in this spot. But the big story was not the Odell sneakers, but the Baker-Mayfield shaving situation. The headline will be Baller Shave Club. I've got to be honest, that's my favorite headline we've ever done.
Starting point is 02:04:03 Baller Shave Club. I get so many texts about this. After I get off the show, my phone just blows up. People love this segment. Okay, so Baker shows up with a full beard. Then he's like, ah, let me shave for the foo man chew before the game. And then after the game, the loss when he failed miserably in the red zone. Do you know I had an NFL coach, not a head coach.
Starting point is 02:04:21 An NFL coach text me and say, that is a really ridiculous situation. Horrible. A coach said that if your quarterback's doing that, you've lost it. Can you imagine if Tom Brady did some nonsense like this? We would be mocking him until the end of the week. and Russell Wilson. Nobody does this. But that being said, I think, and I've said this like four times this year, the Browns have to win this game, right?
Starting point is 02:04:45 You talked earlier about Freddie Kitchens being on the hot seat. I mean, Freddie Kitchens, this has to be his season right here. He could get fired. Kareem Hunt, combined with Nick Chubbs, should run for 300 yards against Buffalo. They just let Adrian Peterson, who's older than you, rushed for like a buck 15 last week. I do like Buffalo staff. Oh, come on. Denver staff beat Cleveland.
Starting point is 02:05:08 I think Buffalo staffs better. If Josh Allen beats them the way that Brandon Allen did for Denver last week, I wouldn't be shocked if Kitchens is out on Monday. I'm not kidding. This team came in with legit playoff expectations, some weird Super Bowl expectations. They could be two and seven. Bring back Hugh Jackson. Big Ben.
Starting point is 02:05:26 Pittsburgh lost Big Ben, and they could be five and four after the weekend. Mason Rudolph. All right, here we go. Tomorrow's headlines today. Panthers Packers game. Okay. So I got a lot of compliments on the singing last week on this show. Yes, you're very funny.
Starting point is 02:05:41 Including from you, the headline after the Panthers shock, the Packers, Sweet Carolina. Dun, dun, dun, done. Green Bay never seemed so bad. So bad. So bad. You're awful. How about the Packers, Colin? I mean, they massive let down last week in L.A. out here.
Starting point is 02:06:01 And now they go home against a Christian McCaffrey-led offense that doesn't have to look over a short. or Kyle Allen. That's a good point. The whole Cam Newton thing's done. It's my team now. Let's go. And if you look at the Packers, I remember we talked midway through the season. We're like, hey, Packers, Super Bowl team. Look at their defense the last four weeks. Matt Moore torches him. Matt Stafford lights them up.
Starting point is 02:06:20 Derek Carr put up huge numbers. I think the Panthers go into Green Bay and pull off one of the bigger upsets of the season. This Panthers team's plucky. Playoffs would be a reach because they're in a bit of a hole. But I like Carolina here. I made it one of my blazing five picks.
Starting point is 02:06:37 I like, you know, here's the thing. Teams have identities, and like Baltimore's got a great identity. But teams also have liabilities, and there are ways to beat teams. And like Green Bay now is like, okay, run, hard, pound, Philadelphia. The Chargers had not run for over 40 yards and four weeks, and they ran for like a buck 50 against the Packers.
