Welcome back to the Richard Sherman podcast, and we got another big splash this off season,
Starting point is 00:02:45 Mike Evans to the San Francisco 49ers. This is a move that I thought made a lot of sense in a lot of ways for both sides, but I wasn't sure Mike Evans would ever leave Tampa Bay. And the conversations with Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch must have been fantastic because he's a San Francisco 49er now, a three-year, $60 million, up to $60 million, deal for a true X receiver, a future Hall of Famer, a guy that can change the complexity of a game and a heartbeat, a guy that you could put a 50-50 ball up to and he make a play, runs the entire route tree, a true X receiver, 6-5, 230, aggressive, a great blocker, a great teammate.
Starting point is 00:03:31 If you think about it on the field, he's going to be a fantastic addition, a safety blanket for for Brock Purdy. I mean, I would have guessed he's getting 120 targets this season. Fingers crossed, he stays totally healthy. But a bona fide number one receiver, a guy who can win one-on-one matchups, win in man coverage, a guy who has dealt with double teams, a smart player, a guy that can be a mentor for this young receiver group, an incredible leader, an incredible consummate professional. He's going to, if he's healthy, he's going to practice, he's going to practice hard,
Starting point is 00:04:06 He's going to do things the right way. He's going to help guys that ask him for help. He's going to show guys how to do things off the field. I mean, they're not just bringing in a great player and a Hall of Fame player, but a Hall of Fame all around, well-rounded guy and human being. And I think that's what's going to make this such a great addition to the San Francisco 49ers. You'll see the results on the field, but off the field and the impact that he has on these young receivers is going to be immense. And that's something I really look forward to seeing.
Starting point is 00:04:36 How many more go balls is 50-50 go balls? Is Brock Party going to put up? I would guess that number is going to double, no question about that. Are they going to make another splash in this off season with these receivers? Could they potentially pursue a guy like Shaheed, a deep threat, a speed guy to partner with Mike Evans and Ricky Persol, potentially? I think that's something that I would expect them to at least kick the tires on. But again, this is a huge, huge deal for the San Francisco 49ers,
Starting point is 00:05:11 getting a true number one receiver who can do it all, who can do it all, who can take the top off the defense, who can run the intermediate routes, who can live in the middle of the field and take big hits. He could be a run-after-catch guy at times. If he catches a lane, he can get you a first down, running slants. He uses his body well. I mean, this is just a guy who's done it. I mean, for him to have so many consecutive thousand-yard seasons, the only other guy, he's tied with Jerry Rice, the 49er all-time great, the goat at the receiver position.
Starting point is 00:05:45 And for him now to call San Francisco home, it's really cool. Now, the question I have is, what number is he going to wear? Because he's not going to wear 13. Obviously, Brock Party has 13. Is it going to be 3? Is it going to be 11? Is he going to stay in the teens? Is he going to go into the 80?
Starting point is 00:05:59 I don't see Mike going into the 80s, but I could be wrong. But that's another big question. Is he going to be, I mean, two? Is it three, four? You know, now Paneros four? I don't know. I don't know what he's going to do with his number, but I know this is going to help the San Francisco 49ers immensely in this, again,
Starting point is 00:06:18 arms race in the NFC West. And on the other side of the coin, I mean, we got to talk about Eddie Panero, Panero getting secured a four-year deal, what he did this season coming in, a guy who had been kind of out of the mix for a while was a fantastic pickup, almost perfect this season for the San Francisco 49ers. That's great. We're still waiting for a lot of the other dominoes to fall,
Starting point is 00:06:42 but on the flip side, the Seattle Seahawks are having themselves in all season, both retaining guys like Josh Job, who just got retained for $8 million a year. I thought that was a phenomenal keep, a guy that was essential to the defense thing. run. They leave him backside. A lot of times he does a great job in both man-to-man-man end-zone coverage, has great zone instincts, great man instincts, great press. It's fine being isolated one-on-one when it's a three-by-one and they have man-to-man backside and the safety's rolling away. He does a fantastic job. And I thought even for $8 million, that's a bargain. That's a bargain for a guy of Josh Job's talent in the way he played this
Starting point is 00:07:26 season. So that's a huge keep for the Seattle Seahawks, but they do lose K-9. They lose the Super Bowl MVP, which is something I predicted because of the number that he was going to get to. I thought that other teams like the Kansas City Chiefs would be higher on him and have a higher number, and he gets what I believe is the highest per year for a free agent running back in the history of National Football League at $15 million a year, three for 45, and he deserves it. He deserves it. And he's going to go out there and do fantastic for the chiefs. And I think the Seattle Seahawks will be fine. I don't think this is going to be something that is incredibly detrimental to what they have going. I think this is a situation where what's best for both sides kind of happen.
Starting point is 00:08:16 You know, could the Seattle Seahawks maintain and keep all the guys that they're going to have to pay, Witherspoon and JSC and all the rest of the guys, they're going to have to shell out some money to and keep K-9. I don't think they would. So I think they took the lesser of these evils and said, hey, K-9, this is what we can offer you. If you can go out there and get a huge bag, then congratulations. We love you. You'll be a Seahawks for life. You'll be a Super Bowl MVP with Seattle Seahawks for the rest of your life.
Starting point is 00:08:46 And that's going to be a beautiful thing. But I don't think they wanted to prohibit him from going out there and getting him, you know, getting his bag, which is what he did. I think they'll be able to find an explosive running back that they feel comfortable about. I think they feel good about Zach Charbonnet and him coming back into the fold. Obviously coming off an injury, but I think what he was doing throughout this season is something they felt really good about. And I think another piece of them losing Kobe Bryant is a little bit more detrimental than I would like. But I feel like, again, this is a storm. They feel like they could weather.
Starting point is 00:09:20 Kobe went and got his three for $40 million with the Chicago Bears, and that's a big-time congratulations to him. He deserves it. He's a fantastic player, a fantastic human being, and a guy that will go out there and continue to shine. But again, I think this is a situation where even when guys go other places, I don't think this is a situation where there's bad blood either way. I think the organization wants the best for these guys,
Starting point is 00:09:45 and coming off a Super Bowl win, the positive energy is to the max. And I think everybody tries to get paid and there's only so much money that can go around and you've got to keep the important pillar pieces. You've got to keep the foundational pieces to your organization. And guys that have helped you get here, you appreciate. But you also got to understand that, hey, can we draft a guy?
Starting point is 00:10:10 Do we have a guy in the cut in our backups that could potentially do the job at a similar level. And I think the Seahawks feel good about it. You know, when he got hurt and was out for a while, Ty Okada came in and played at a high level, really, really kept this defense going and was flying around. And I think that was an important part of this decision. Not that they wouldn't have wanted to pay Kobe, you know, what he's due,
Starting point is 00:10:34 but could they pay him and keep the guys that they needed to keep? They're going to have to pay high dollar numbers for JSC. And I would guess he's going to approach $40 million. And I think the same is true for Devin Witherspoon. He's going to be $31 million. And if you look at what the Rams just did, again, it's an arms race in NFC right now. They traded for Trent McDuffie, a couple first, a lot of picks, a first round pick, a fifth, a six. I mean, we talked about it the other day and then went on and paid him over $100 million a year.
Starting point is 00:11:05 He's averaging $31 million per season with this new deal with the Rams, which is incredibly huge. I mean, that's a monumental deal. So congratulations to him for end of the program. Again, then they go on and pick up Jalen Watson, who was the running mate of Trent McDuffie in Kansas City and pay him what appears to be $17 million a year. So you bring in two new corners who haven't played it down for you, who have been fantastic players and played fantastic in big games,
Starting point is 00:11:36 two-time Super Bowl champion, Jalen Watson. And then you inject them into this Rams' deal. with a really great and aggressive pass rush. They're going to play a lot of man coverage. I'm sure Chris Chula's excited about this. We heard rumblings and rumors that Tariq Woolen may be an option and there may be interest there. I don't think that would be the case anymore
Starting point is 00:11:54 after paying these two guys, unless you're going to pay another corner over $15 million, which I highly doubt. But we'll see what this move looks like. I mean, this is great. This is going to be a really formidable Rams defense, along with a really aggressive and potent. in the offense. Obviously, this same team made the NFC championship last year and we're a few plays away from winning that game. But the Seattle Seahawks did more than enough to win that
Starting point is 00:12:21 game and they're a reigning Super Bowl champion. So the Rams are feeling like they have to keep up in this division. Then you got the San Francisco 49ers, not only bringing in Mike Effens, but just getting healthier. Fred Warner's back. Nicholas John Bosa is back. And I'm hearing trade rumors and people call him for Fred Warner. I'm sure the 49ers are picking up the phone, but I don't think that's a trade that is likely. This organization loves Fred Warner and loves what he means to this organization.
Starting point is 00:12:51 I think they want him to be a 49er for life. Crazier things have happened, no question about it, but I don't think that is something at the forefront of their mind unless it's an offer that just really blows them away. I mean, you're talking about two, three first round picks, like something ridiculously incredible that you could not say no to. and I don't see John Lynch making that deal because of what Fred Warner means to this defense.
Starting point is 00:13:13 He's the heart of this defense. And you could just see it last year was a perfect example. When he was not a part of it, it was hard to find turnovers. It was hard to find stops. It was hard to find the kind of consistency that they've been accustomed to.
Starting point is 00:13:28 So I don't see that changing. But I'm loving this arms race. I'm seeing from the NFC West. Another huge trait that happened this offseason is Matt Max. Mad Max, Max, Max Crosby, going to the Baltimore Ravens to help solidify that defense. I think that's a great move for both sides. Obviously, the Raiders are in rebuild mode with a new staff trying to figure things out.
Starting point is 00:13:50 They're having a pretty good offseason signing some guys. They just signed Tyler Lindenbaum to one of the highest paid offensive line contracts in the history of the league. I think they gave him $81 million. They signed Tyler Algiers. So they're starting to inject a little bit of talent on that side. But I think for the Ravens, this is a win now mode. This is strengthening already strong defense and saying, hey, we're going to be a force to be reckoned with. Baltimore Ravens have been known for their defense for a long time.
Starting point is 00:14:25 And obviously, they have talent on the other side of the ball with Derek Henry and Lamar Jackson. But Max Crosby is a game changer on the other side. and if you just look at that division, I'd hate to be a quarterback in that division. You're talking about Miles Garrett with the Cleveland Browns. You're talking about Max Crosby now with the Ravens. You don't have T. Hendrickson anymore, but then you're talking about T.J. Watt and the boys over there in Pittsburgh,
Starting point is 00:14:50 it's murderous role. And if you're Joe Burrow, you're like, oh, I mean, you might want to start thinking about taking a little less to get you a little bit more protection, Joe. That's all I'm saying. You might want to start considering your health, Your health. Yeah, that's all I'm saying.
Starting point is 00:15:07 This has been a great offseason. What's happening in Miami is interesting. It looks like they're going to cut Tuatunga Vailoa, which was obvious with the new staff and all this, but how much money they owe them is. Oh, my God, this dead money stuff is starting to, they're going to pay them $50 million a year to go away. I mean, it's bad.
Starting point is 00:15:30 And then you hear the rumors that the Atlanta Falcons are interested and Tuatunga Vailoa, and I just, it's hard for me to understand the interest in a guy that another team is paying $50 million to go away, but I, especially with the way the quarterback situation has been in Atlanta over the last couple of years, you lose your head coach and your general manager because the way the quarterback situation was dealt with, and to walk back in that, I don't want any part of it, but we'll see. You know, Tuotunga Vaila is a good guy and has found a way to play at a high level in this league at times and maybe a change of scenery would be good for him.
Starting point is 00:16:04 But I think if they were that interested, then maybe Miami would have been able to navigate a trade that might have helped them salary cap wise if that was the case. But we'll see how this free agency pans out. But right now, I think this is a fantastic move for the San Francisco 49ers, getting them a true number one receiver in Mike Evans. Obviously, all the chaos around the Brandon IUC situation, they're getting away from that and starting to find some. some consistency and just calmness about this situation.
Starting point is 00:16:37 I think he's going to be a June 1st cut from what I understand about what they've been saying publicly about the Brandon Iuke situation. I think this helps Ricky Persaw. I think this helps George Kiddo. I think this helps the San Francisco 49ers in general. As always, we're going to keep giving you free agency news as it comes up. Stay tuned. Stay with us all offseason long because this is going to be fun.
