The Herd with Colin Cowherd - Richard Sherman Podcast - Rams–Chiefs Trent McDuffie trade REACTION, Kyler Murray, Trey Hendrickson released | Richard Sherman

Episode Date: March 5, 2026

Richard Sherman reacts to the Los Angeles Rams trading a huge package for Kansas City Chiefs All-Pro corner Trent McDuffie—what does that say about their “win now” mindset? Plus, are... the Chiefs quietly setting up a mini rebuild with those extra picks and new cap space? Sherman discusses Trey Hendrickson hitting free agency, which contenders like the San Francisco 49ers, Seattle Seahawks, Philadelphia Eagles, or Green Bay Packers might pursue him, and how a bidding war could price out some teams. And Rich talks about former Arizona Cardinals QB Kyler Murray’s market—now that he’s hitting free agency, do the Jets make the most sense, or could we even see him return to baseball?   All lines are provided by Hard Rock Bet. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Starting point is 00:02:27 Appreciate you. Welcome back to the Richard Sherman podcast. We got to talk about this Trent McDuffie trade to the Rams. The Kansas City Chiefs traded Trent McZuffy to the Rams for a first round pick, a fifth round pick, a sixth round pick, and a third round pick in 2027. Sheesh. I wasn't expecting a corner to go for such a haul right now. But he is an all-pro in 2023 and a second-team all-pro in 2024 with three career picks.
Starting point is 00:03:12 I just, I think that price tag is a bit high. Feels like the Rams kind of reached right here for a great player. Now, this is a great player, and obviously the NFC West right now is an arms race, and the Rams want to keep up with the Seattle Seahawks. They were this close to making it to a Super Bowl, and they think this Trent McDuffie trade gets them over the top. They think they are in a win now mode, and they have to stay competitive in this very, very competitive NSC West,
Starting point is 00:03:41 so they're doing everything they can. Obviously, they've traded away a lot of first-round picks in the last 10 years. I think the only time they didn't trade away the first-round pick is when they drafted Jared first. But that seems like a bit much. I would have thought you could get Trent McDuffie for a first-round pick, pick maybe the 2027 third, and that's it. But apparently they wanted to make sure they got this deal done.
Starting point is 00:04:10 We'll see how it ends up panning out. But for the Kansas City Chiefs, I think that this puts them in kind of a rebuild mode. Maybe they don't expect Patrick Mahomes to get back in time this season. They think they're going to use this season to maybe rebuild and retool their roster. and these draft picks will go a long way to getting them to that. Also frees up some money for them to spend other places, to retain some guys, to maybe pay some guys for more pass rushers. They've got to secure this offensive line and strengthen this offensive line for sure.
Starting point is 00:04:50 Again, they're going to be in the running back market. We talked about them being in the K-9 sweepstakes. So the NFL free agency is starting off. I mean, it's starting off fast. It's starting off with a flurry of moves. And you guys tell me what you think of this move. I think that the Rams gave up a lot to get Trent McDuffie. Not that he's not worth it.
Starting point is 00:05:14 I think he's a great player in the National Football League. That's not to be argued to be debated. But that's quite the haul. But cool, cool. You guys talk about that in the comments. You tell me what you think. Send me your thoughts. And in other NFL news, it appears that Trey Hendrickson
Starting point is 00:05:31 and Kyler Murray will be free agents this offseason. Both teams confirmed they're not using the franchise tags on those players. Now, Trey Hendrickson is going to be a sought after name this offseason. Could the San Francisco 49ers be in the running? Could the Seattle Seahawks be in the running? I think both teams inquired on trading for him at different times and different points. So I think those conversations are going to be had. But I think it all depends on how the bidding war goes for Trey Hendrickson.
Starting point is 00:05:59 If it gets too high, I think those two teams get out of it. If he wants a chance to win a Super Bowl, and that's what's important to him and winning and not money is the most important thing to him, then I think there's going to be some great conversations with some contenders that he may have a chance to go to. I think those two would be the beginning of the discussions. Obviously, you can't count out Howie in Philadelphia. He always seems to figure out a way to put together some.
Starting point is 00:06:29 incredible teams and put together some incredible deals. Again, the Rams, no matter how deep you are at the D-line, you can always be deeper. And you know how the NFC West is right now. They're going to continue to play that game. I think the Green Bay Packers, obviously spending a lot of money on the D-line right now, but how do you feel about adding somebody else who can get to that quarterback? There's a number of spots that, you know, it feels like he could go to, but I think this is going to be one we have to let play out and run its course. because how high the salary cap is gone, I can't predict it.
Starting point is 00:07:05 And money matters in this league. People say, I wanna win, I wanna win, no question about it. But I like money. So, Kylin Murray, there'll be a lot of stops, a lot of places that at least have the conversation about Kyler Murray because they have quarterback openings. I think the Jets come to mind immediately, as your first, like, hey, you know, what can they do to get him?
Starting point is 00:07:33 Does it make sense for him to go there? And would that make a difference? I'm sure he's had success in this league. He's had some seasons where, you know, he's been named a pro bowler. So if he has talent around him, if the offense is suited to his strengths, he can get the job done. So I think that's a spot for him. I'm trying to think what other spots really make sense for him. Also, I don't know if the avenue is still open for him to go back to baseball.
Starting point is 00:08:02 I remember he was drafted ninth overall by the Oakland A's. If that's, that was a conversation early on in his career right before he got his big deal. Is that conversation still open? I would, you know, I don't have any ears in his camp. So we'll see. We'll see. I don't think the Minnesota Vikings make sense, even though there's a bit of quarterback. quarterback uncertainty there.
Starting point is 00:08:30 Obviously, the Indianapolis coach just transition tagged Daniel Jones. So it looks like they feel like he's going to be their quarterback at least for the next season. And they want to do a longer term deal with him, apparently. So, you know, that's positive news for Daniel Jones because I wasn't sure how that situation would turn out. He was having a great season or offense, you know, was the talk of the league. And then he goes down with a major injury on a year where, You know, it looked like a revival season for his career. And so I'm happy for him that he was able to play well enough to earn himself the transition tag, which I think is 37 and some change, million dollars.
Starting point is 00:09:12 And we'll see. We'll see. We'll see what happens with Kyler, what he decides. I think the Jets are the most viable option, the most obvious need at the position, and the most inconsistent. quarterback room over the last few years. So we'll see. We'll see what they do. I think that makes sense.
Starting point is 00:09:35 I don't see a lot of other places that make a ton of sense. The more I'm thinking about it. I'm trying to look through the AFC South, the NFC South. There's not a lot of places that are looking for a quarterback. Would it make sense to inject him in the room in Cleveland? No, it doesn't. You already got to sound Watson still in that room. Now going to be healthy.
Starting point is 00:09:57 You got Chador Sanders in that room and the conversation's there. Obviously, they don't think they're going to play Deshaun Watson, but if you got a healthy $50 million quarterback on the bench, it's going to, depending on how the starter plays, anytime he throws interception, that conversation's going to be there. That conversation is going to be open. Would somebody trade for him?
Starting point is 00:10:18 Would he be willing to adjust his cap number and adjust his contract down to facilitate a trade? That would probably be a scenario. I think he would be open to it if he's looking to play some football. But again, these things are all up in the air. We'll see how they plan out. Free agency is starting up. So we're, you know, for all you football minds out there, stay tuned. Hey, guys, it's us.
