Starting point is 00:00:39 Another podcast from some SNL late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smigel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer Streeter Seidel, help an acapella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter.

Starting point is 00:01:41 this is clivert taylor the fourth and on my podcast the clivert show i'm bringing you conversations about all kinds of stuff like being an internet famous referee we're in the middle of a game this linebacker this linebacker walks up to me he goes a ref my mom wants you to wave at her what Time out. Quarterback on office blue with 42. Hey, Rhett, my mama want you to weigh better. What? Hey, Ms. Parker.

We are packed on a Thursday live in L.A.
Starting point is 00:02:47 This is The Herd. Wherever you may be and however you may be listening, we're on IHeart Radio, Fox Sports Radio, and FS1. Great NBA stuff today. One hour from now, Super Bowl winning coach Andy Reid stops by and Joy Taylor is joining me.
Starting point is 00:03:03 How are you in a Thursday, Joy? I'm good. My heat took an L last night's but Pat Riley's making moves. Pat Riley is making moves. I'm going to get to that in a second. Trey deadline at the end of our show today. So let me start with this. I would always rather
Starting point is 00:03:18 pass on somebody that's expensive than pay for somebody and regret it for years. The worst thing in salary cap sports like, you know, the NBA or NFL, is you're stuck with a terrible
Starting point is 00:03:34 John Wall contract. That is the worst place. Listen, I would have some regret if I passed on a great player, but it's the NBA. There's always another trade and another player available. What you don't want is a terrible contract that you can't move. The Houston Rockets, who have a real smart general manager, had to move off a very good player yesterday, Clint Capella,
Starting point is 00:03:57 who gives you a ton of easy baskets. He's a big guy who can run, he can defend the rim, and now that are the world's shortest basketball team. And why did they move off him? Russell Westbrook, they are trapped. $41 million and a half dollars for the next four years. He can't shoot. The game's moving away from him.
Starting point is 00:04:16 He can't play with anybody and he's hard to coach. I don't always love Hardin, but he's coachable. And he is the games moving into him. So here's a prime example. They had to get rid of Capella. They love Capella. Two years ago, all I heard, oh, I love Capella. I was like, oh, he's okay.
Starting point is 00:04:33 I love Capella. Last year, I love Capella. I'm like, I like Capella. Now, all of a sudden, ain't no good. So they have no rim protector. Good luck in the West, facing Anthony Davis, facing the Joker in Denver, Go Bear, Yonnis in the East with no rim protector. They got rid of him for one reason.
Starting point is 00:04:52 They loved him. Rest book. Rest book. Russell Westbrook. I'll say it again. He's shooting 23% from threes. Think about this. Of all the NBA players who have shot at least 8%.
Starting point is 00:05:07 83s. Westbrook is 236 out of 236 players. Dead last in the league. He's a guard. If he was a center or a power forward, he's a guard. He is lower
Starting point is 00:05:23 than Markell Fultz, who two years ago forgot how to shoot. If I was Markele Fultz and my microphone was the basket, he couldn't hit it. He's last and won't stop shooting and doesn't play with anybody and he's uncoachable. Listen, I,
Starting point is 00:05:37 been tough on four athletes in my broadcasting career in the last decade. Mello, Baker, Tebow, Westbrook. I'm four for four. I don't go hard against the guy unless I know I'm right. I was right seven years ago. I was right five years ago. I was right a year ago. I'm right today. It is an unmovable awful contract. For the record, Oklahoma City was six last year with Westbrook. They're a bunch of babies. They're in diapers. They're sixth again this year. And Houston was way better without him. Now they're worth. and Capella's gone. And they loved Capella.
Starting point is 00:06:10 All I heard for the last three years, all the time they put into Capella, all the scouting, they develop them, the coaching. Do you know how much time Houston put into Clint Capella? All the easy baskets, all the rent protection, gone. Because he can't shoot. That's a fair knock, but it's okay. I'm okay if you have a big who can't shoot.
Starting point is 00:06:29 If you rebounds, he gets you easy baskets, you're going to have one of those guys. But you can't have two, and you certainly can't have weapons. Westbrook shooting 23% from threes. He's gotten worse. Not sure how it's possible. He has.
Starting point is 00:06:44 So in sports, yes, I would regret not spending big money for a great player. But there's always another player out there. I mean, take out Patrick Mahomes. You can replace. There's always another great quarterback or two out there. There's somebody that can win your games. Kirk Cousins can win your games. But what you don't want in the NBA,
Starting point is 00:07:07 is a bad contract that you can't move. You can't move John Walls Deal. You can't move Westbrook's deal now. And I've been right on this. I got nothing against him. But don't tell me you love Capella for two years and now you're moving them. If you can't defend the tin against Anthony Davis
Starting point is 00:07:25 and the Joker and Yonnet, they're just N.M.B. If you played him in the playoffs eventually, you can't be as short as Houston is today. You can have PJ Tucker who's your five. So it's nothing against Russell Westbrook. It really isn't. But I've been right on this.
Starting point is 00:07:40 I'm right again. Houston's worse with him. OKC's fine without him. And his contracts 41.5 large. Folks, he's 236th out of 236 guys shooting threes. I mean, Houston two years ago was a Chris Paul hamstring from beating the Warriors and getting to the finals and probably winning it. Now, they don't even have an identity. Their identity is they're the shortest team in the league with one guy who can consistently nail a three.
Starting point is 00:08:17 I still don't think Darry wanted Westbrook. My gut feeling is the owner wanted him. The GM didn't. He didn't make any sense day one analytically. It didn't make sense. All right, let's shift to this. So the Miami Heat are back. Now, not like back to winning the title, but they're pretty good.
Starting point is 00:08:37 And they're interesting. It looks like they're going to get Iggy, Andre Aguadala. Andre Aguedahl at this point is an expensive old guy who situationally can help you a little in the half court. He's not changing. He's not beating Milwaukee. He's not going to beat the Clippers or Lakers. But it makes him interesting. So let's think about this.
Starting point is 00:08:58 Pat Riley is as smart as any current basketball executive in the world. It took him six years post-Lebron to just get interesting in Miami. And this is what I've said about the Lakers in Kyle Kuzma. Be very careful. Be very careful trading Kyle Kuzma. So when you get LeBron, and this is what's happened in Cleveland twice in Miami and the Lakers, you have to get rid of all the young guys and you get all these veterans who can win now. And then LeBron leaves you and you are a mess.
Starting point is 00:09:29 Miami in a great city with a great history with a brilliant, brilliant basketball mind in Pat Riley. it took him if this deal goes through six years just to get quote unquote interesting in the east in the east that's why I say I don't think the Lakers win it this year I think they're really really good lose to the clippers and they would lose to Milwaukee probably and if they don't then LeBron's a year older I mean Rondo's on life support Dudley's on life support the white Howard's come on And LeBron's now in his 18th year. And you trade Coosma and you got no fresh legs. Fresh legs don't win you the title.
Starting point is 00:10:15 But if you go last year and look at Toronto, Fred Van Bleet, you know, having some young guys around. Syacom's obviously a very good player. But this idea that you could just go old, old, older, oldest. The Lakers at one point said they wanted Andre Aguadala. Really? Another old expensive guy. So Doug Gottliebola says this about LeBron.
Starting point is 00:10:36 We know he's good. great. But man, when you cater to his every wish, and they did in Miami, and they did in Cleveland, and they are in Los Angeles, sometimes he leaves, and it is a decade if you could even do that to clean it up. One of the things we give credit to LeBron for, guys that love LeBron like you and Nick Wright and others. Hey, when he leave, look at the record for the calves when he left. Look at the record for the heat when he left. Part of it is that's who LeBron is. Like you try and create everything to be perfect for him. And when he leaves, it's like the kid that comes over to your house.
Starting point is 00:11:13 And every time he comes over to your house, right, somebody ends up being sick or the playroom's messed up. And you're like, what happened? They're like, well, LeBron was here. This is what happened. LeBron's a lot of fun. And everybody has a good time. And then when he leaves, you know, everything is a mess. By the way, I'm a parent.
Starting point is 00:11:28 That's his best analogy ever. That really happens all the time. So, and I will say this about Miami, not only did it take Pat Riley in a great city with a great owner. and great history. And by the way, Spolster's a great coach. A lot of you fans bang on him. This is one of the few teams in the NBA that plays defense every night. So Spolster's a great coach. He really is. He's a top five, six coach in the league. Riley's a genius. Mickey Ererson's a great owner. It's an amazing basketball city. It's got a great basketball culture. It's in a state with no state tax. You look out your door, it's aqua water in the winter. It is great. And it took them six years,
Starting point is 00:12:01 if this deal goes through to get interesting. Cleveland twice has never recovered without LeBron. They've never recovered. So just be very careful about trading Kyle Kuzma for another old guy. Because if the Lakers don't win it this year, next year is what? Who do you have? You spend so much time scouting and drafting and developing Kyle Kuzma. Ship him off. Have you noticed Brandon Ingram now in New Orleans?
Starting point is 00:12:29 Having a hell of a year. You put a lot of time into Brandon Ingram, got no payoff. And it's New Orleans that gets all the payoffs. off. LeBron's not lasting forever. This team in LA is good enough to win now. I don't think they will, but the Lakers are good enough to win now. Let's keep the one young player, the one pair of 26 minutes a night fresh legs at 6'8 that can still hit an occasional three. Keep Kuzma. Coming up next, you know, by the way, on Miami, it should be noted. They're interesting. They're not going to win the championship, but they're really overachieving.
Starting point is 00:13:06 have two undrafted players on their team now playing big minutes. starters. They have two. It just shows you how good a coach Spolster is. So Miami, it took six years to get interesting. Two of their starters are undrafted. So they're massively overachieving. All right.
Starting point is 00:13:24 I got a lot of energy today. I'm off tomorrow. So I got a lot of energy today. Trade deadline day in the NBA, Andy Reid, top of next hour. Coming up next, it is official. Belichick wants. Brady back. And I'll tell you why,
Starting point is 00:13:41 because Bill's smart and I'll tell you what tip the scales on this coming up next. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing and we're still chasing it and we don't know when we've done enough because people scoreboard watch
Starting point is 00:15:15 life becomes about wins and losses Steve Burns, Dustin Ross because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth or are you a good person because you're afraid because that's two different intentions bro absolutely and that's two different levels of trust I want you to just really be a good person

Listen to the 1021 podcast on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:17:01 By the way, I love the trade deadline. Nothing ever happens, but I still love it. It's like Christmas. It'd be like a bad Christmas. The presents look great, and if you open them up and there was nothing in them, but the trading deadline, the presents look great, and then you open it up and you get, you know, Andre Gwadala. Let me start with the Houston thing.
Starting point is 00:17:19 And I like Houston. I like the owner. I like the GM. I've come around on Hardin. I do like Hardin. I think he's coachable. He is what he is, but I think he's more coachable. I think he listens.
Starting point is 00:17:28 I don't think Westbrook is. So two years ago, they love Capella. This year, they love Capella. All I hear is they love Capella. They put a ton in, easy baskets, rim protector. There's about four good. big as you're going to have to go through. Now that the shortest team in the world, and my takeaway is, because you can't have two guys in the floor who can't shoot, and Chris Bruce are
Starting point is 00:17:46 joining us, sorry for the radio audience. And so, you know, right now Westbrook has deteriorated as a shooter. And so they're stuck with two guys on the floor who can't shoot. You can't get through the West like that. What they're trying to do is open up the floor so Westbrook can just drive. Because as you said, they see, he can't shoot, which is what we all knew. Daryl Morey is a good GM. But he's not the mad genius that everybody thinks he is. He's more like a mad scientist. He's obsessed with
Starting point is 00:18:14 moves and trades and big names. I understand they didn't get a big name in this one. But every free agent on the market, they got no money, but they got to be in the mix. Every trade possibility, they've got to be in the mix. Sometimes you need to let your team marinate. Bake as when broadcasting, I literally
Starting point is 00:18:30 in broadcasting, I tell people this all the time executives. Let stuff bake. Yes. Let the audience figure out. who the on-air people are. And the way they should have done it, Colin, Chris Paul, they forget, they were what, they were up three, two on Golden State going home. They should, and I get it that Chris and James were at each other's throats.
Starting point is 00:18:50 But if you're the leader of that team as the GM is, you've got to sit down with those two, sit down with your coach and say, look, let's figure this thing out. I get it that last year ended horribly. But we should have beaten Golden State lab two years ago. Let's see if we can work this out. as we all said, Chris is just a better spot-up shooter. He's a better position defender.
Starting point is 00:19:11 And you had a better team last year. Now what they're going to do, they're going to win 50. They're going to be sexy and fun to watch. But they're tiny now. Kind of like a train wreck, right? You got to see it like a car crash. I mean, you want to see, stop and watch it. But they have absolutely no chance of winning the West.
Starting point is 00:19:29 And here's the thing. It's not like Darry went to, I don't know, Sacramento or Cleveland before LeBron. some horrible franchise and made them relevant. Houston has always been a top flight franchises. One championships before Mori were good and relevant before you. Houston has been good. Yes. I mean, by the way, I've been an NBA fan for 40 years.
Starting point is 00:19:50 You can go back to the Rudy Tomjanovitch teams. They've always been relevant. Moses Malone, Elijah, Samson. They've always been up there. And so for Darrell, it's championship robust. And this isn't going to get it. This is just throwing junk at the wall and seeing if anything sticks. Okay, so let's go to the Andre Igwadala trade.
Starting point is 00:20:08 So, listen, Iggy is a nice piece. It's six years post-Lebron in Miami that the genius Pat Riley finally has them interesting. Now, I don't think this, I think Milwaukee's going to slide through, and I don't think they're the clippers or the Lakers. I don't think they're Utah or Denver. I'm not sure if they are. I think they're an overachieving team with a great coach and a great guy in Pat Riley. We're starting two undrafted rookies. When I watched this Iggy deal, I thought it took.
Starting point is 00:20:36 Pat Riley, six years post-Lebron, to get, I think it's fair to say, interesting. Okay, the Lakers still may move Kyle Kuzma, meaning they're just going to get older and more expensive. I looked at this Miami deal, and I thought Lakers, I thought, be very careful about this is what LeBron does, get rid of all the young guys, get old, the Lakers can't defend anybody outside of Anthony Davis. On the perimeter. They can't defend anybody. They're not going to win the title.
Starting point is 00:21:04 So I like the Andre Igwadala move, but it was a cautionary tale to me for the Lakers Rob Polinko to go, this is how long post-Lebron, you better not build a franchise just for this year. But here's the thing. First of all, if you're Miami, would you take those four straight trips to the finals, two championships? Okay. If you knew for six years we're going to be irrelevant. Okay, here's what's funny, though. That's fine in Cleveland.
Starting point is 00:21:29 Miami is a distracted city. I was just there for a week. A lot to do in Miami. People in that city, they bail, and they should. In Cleveland, I would take a title in 10 years. So you wouldn't have taken Miami? You wouldn't have taken the trade off in Miami? Because it rocked the world.
Starting point is 00:21:49 But if you had told Pat, you're going to end up with six years of irrelevance. He thought long and hard. The heat are not Cleveland. There are a legitimate global basketball respected power. To their credit, they never totally fell to the bottom. You know, they're not. But I hear what you're saying. But here's the deal with Kuzma that people are forgetting.
Starting point is 00:22:07 Number one, and I don't think they're going to trade him. I think they're open to it and looking. If I could get Marcus Morris from New York straight up for Kyle Kuzma, I would do it. He's a better shooter. He's tougher. He's a better defender. He's a veteran who knows how to win. However, they can't because Kuzma's not making any money.
Starting point is 00:22:26 He was a low first round draft pick. He's still in his rookie deal. And so you'd have to throw in Danny Green to make some of these deals. work, and so they don't want to do that. They're good enough to win the title, but the Lakers are good enough. They're good enough to feel. If I got LeBron James and Anthony Davis and Danny Green. Right, I'm good enough to feel like I got a shot.
Starting point is 00:22:47 I think the Clippers are better. But I think it's close, and I think if LeBron can be heroic and Anthony Davis can become a fourth quarter assassin against the Clippers, they can beat them. Here's what I do if I'm the Lakers. The rest of the regular season, I'm working on this. Number one, LeBron's been taking far more shots in the fourth quarter than AD. I got to get AD. He's got to be my fourth quarter guy.
Starting point is 00:23:11 I know what LeBron can do in the fourth, but I want AD to be my fourth quarter guy because against the Clippers, they don't have a good defensive matchup for him, but I can't have him scoring 28 against the Clippers. I need him giving me 32 consistently, and in the fourth quarter, killing Montres Harrell or Kauai or Paul George or whoever they put on him. So get him used to be in the fourth quarter score.
Starting point is 00:23:34 Number two, I want Kyle Kuzma, keep him and teach him winning basketball. Because that's what he, he's a talented player, you said, but winning basketball, he's not yet there. Okay, most of these young guys aren't. Take him out to lunch, sit him down and talk to him about what you need, work on that in games. If it costs you a few regular season games, so be it. But get him used to playing winning basketball. Joey was at this game a couple nights ago. Cusma's flawed, but you can space the floor.
Starting point is 00:24:03 He's 680s athletic. He runs well. And he'll go streaks. And he, no question. He has nights. And he gives you 26 a night. If you had traded Cusma and somehow gotten Iguodala through a bunch of various pieces, you are so old and expensive.
Starting point is 00:24:16 But here's what I'll say, though. And one, I would have only wanted Iigua. They only want him on a buyout. And they had nothing to trade for him, but they would have kept Cusma to get Iguodala. However, you still, Colin, what you're forgetting is even when LeBron's done. say in four years. You still have Anthony Davis. So it's not like the future is going to be bleak.
Starting point is 00:24:37 I'm still going to have him and then I just build around him. I saw what happens when you just have Anthony Davis. It's called the Pelican. He's a 1A. He's not a 1. He is a 1A. I'll give you that. But again, LeBron, work on him. Work on him.
Starting point is 00:24:49 Make him more one. You've been pretty good so far. All right. Chris Brousard. So I actually liked. I thought it was subtly very good. The Sixers brought over two shooters off the bench. Agreed. L. liked it a lot. Here's my theory on this. If you look at the Sixers' first seven, I'm going to make you an argument.
Starting point is 00:25:14 Joel Embed, Baby Shack, Horford, veteran forward presence, who by the way was tough guarding Embed. That's one reason they brought him over. No question. So I got a veteran defender. Tobias Harris, Josh Richardson, athletic wings. Simmons 28-8 when Embedde doesn't play. He tells you what he is, but he's also, he gets the ball to three shooters. Now I have Alec Berks and Glenn Robinson off the bench, first two. Those are real shooters. Right.
Starting point is 00:25:42 Okay. You tell me in the NBA, you look at that. This is why I would have broken up NB'd and Simmons. It's a chemistry issue. You find a better front first seven outside of maybe the clippers in the league than that. I'll give you, that's the best, most talented team in the East for sure. I would take the clippers. But yeah, oh, yeah, no question about it as far as talent.
Starting point is 00:26:04 Their problem, as you said, it's chemistry. In the locker room, M.B. wants to be the man. And out of the locker room, too. Simmons wants to be the man. They're jealous of one another. They're jealous of the spotlight the other one gets, not recognizing that they both get the spotlight. They're both superstars. They both seem to be more concerned, according to people, close to that situation.
Starting point is 00:26:26 Al Horford said yesterday we have a locker room problem. Well, they both want to be more celebrity and superstar than they want to be more celebrity than superstar basketball player. Now, I'm told that other players talk to them at some sort of kind of players meeting, something like that, where they talk to Embed and Simmons and we're like, look, you guys, you got to lead us. You got to get it together. We should be much better.
Starting point is 00:26:52 And that the Embed and Simmons accepted that. But we'll see how it plays out on the court. I'll tell you that. That move yesterday, we're going to pay attention to the. Good move. They got two guys who shoot over 35% on threes. Now, do I think it gets them past Milwaukee? Again, I think they should beat Milwaukee. So do I. But if the chemistry problems are there, M.B. wants the ball too much. And if the chemistry problems are there, Horford is a great pro and a great guy, but he's not a strong enough personality to override those two in the locker room and really take control of that team.
Starting point is 00:27:25 Love Al Horford in the playoffs. Here's what I do, Colin, if I'm Philly. I got two options. One, I let this season play out. See what we do in the playoffs. If we go out in the second round or earlier or get smashed in the conference finals, then I am doing one or two things. I'm either trading Joel Embed.
Starting point is 00:27:47 He's the one I'm trading, not Simmons. I'm looking around seeing what I can get because I think I can get a haul for him. Or I'm bringing in a new coach, a strong coach, who I know, who's worked with difficult people. I'm calling Phil. No, I'm just saying. But I need a coach that I think can just try it. Can you work these two, get these two on the same page?
Starting point is 00:28:09 But you're good. Even then I'm still looking at NBA, though, to see what I can get. You NBA guys, you just want to run the coach out of town. Oh, look, Brett's a great guy, one of the best guys in NBA. However, how long you get? So the players aren't culpable for some of it? They are, but at the end of the day, the coach has got to be able to corral the players and get them to work together.
Starting point is 00:28:30 No question about, I like Brett, but I think last year they should have hired Mining Williams. Hey, by the way, Philadelphia ran out another coach, Andy Reid. How's he doing? Philadelphia loves running coaches out. It took Andy 21 years, and I'm an Andy Reed fan. I'm an Andy Reed fan. By the way, Bruce Ard, 11 playoff games. The best picker at FS1 was Chris Broussard, who had nine and two in the playoffs. Rob Parker was bragged. on the eye couple about how he beat me in the regular season.
Starting point is 00:29:00 I don't care about the regular season, Talon. You're a player. Call me Kauai Broussard. I'm all about the postseason. I'm all about the playoffs. That's all I cared about. Nine and two had the Chiefs and the Preseason. No, no, it's like load management.
Starting point is 00:29:11 We call you half the time and you won't show up for the show. Chris Broussar on a couple of Fox Sports Radio, Joe Tenton with the news. No, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the Herdline News. I also had the Chiefs in the Preseason. Yeah, she did. She took the Chiefs.
Starting point is 00:29:26 You guys are so courageous. to take Patrick Mall. I love it. Take the Jaguars. Who was your pick? Someone was talking about he doesn't win big games. My pick was, I don't know who my pick. Preseason?
Starting point is 00:29:38 Who was my pick? New Orleans? No, I didn't like them. Who was my pick? No, you didn't like New Orleans coming into the season. I don't think I may. I don't do the Super Bowl pick. It's ridiculous.
Starting point is 00:29:46 I mean, I'm supposed to now pick next year's Super Bowl champ. Next year, I think San Francisco. In August. San Francisco is my early picked for next year. Well, Chiefs fans, Brave temperatures in the 20s. yesterday to celebrate the Super Bowl win in Kansas City, although I'm positive. I don't know what temperature would have kept Kansas City fans inside for that parade. And Travis Kelsey didn't waste his opportunity to pump up the crowd. And this was his speech at the parade.
Starting point is 00:30:11 21 years. Y'all know what that means? Everybody here is thinking, oh, that's when I can, you know what I mean? Legally get a drink. Yeah. No, 21 years. That's how long it's just been turning for my Andy Reed. Mm. And turning. And what we do, what we do, we unleash a can of whoop ass on everybody.
Starting point is 00:30:39 24 nothing. I ain't trying to hear it. One last time for 2019, 2020, world champions. You got a fight for your right to party. What a circus. I mean,
Starting point is 00:30:56 the Kelsey brother. can give some speeches at parades. Is Mahomes... Did you see Mahomes doing the pro wrestler behind him? This team is so likable. They're so fun. This is full of stars. Andy Reid is so likable.
Starting point is 00:31:11 Kelsey can give some speeches. He's got a future in WWE after he retires if he wants. So Andy Reid's going to join us in a little bit. And he also said he's looking forward to next season. Next year we're coming right back here. One more time, baby. One more time.
Starting point is 00:31:25 According to Andy Reid, that parade was The parade was chaos, but well-deserved, and the fans definitely showed out. They're having a good time up there. He also, I don't know if you saw Patrick Mahomes caught a cut of beer. He's so eloquently. Yeah, he's an athlete. So the Browns introduced Andrew Barry as their new GM yesterday, and he aims to make Cleveland a contender right away.
Starting point is 00:31:48 If there's anything that I want to be defined by, it's by aggression. You know, we want to aggressively acquire talent because, you know, that's the name of the game from an NFL's front office perspective. And we're going to explore every avenue that enables us to do that. I can assure you that winning is at the forefront of everyone's minds in the organization. And we're looking forward to pursuing that over the next several months. By the way, people think I'm unduly harsh on the Browns. I will have my second positive Cleveland Brown take next hour.
Starting point is 00:32:20 My second in a week, very positive Cleveland Brown take. Your first one was Bigger Mayfield on first things first. Look like he grew up. He measured and mature. Well, he is literally also growing up. That's fair. He's very young. I appreciate it before your third year, but I'm okay with it.
Starting point is 00:32:37 Well, look, I like the moves that the Browns are making. I like that everything is more measured. It seems like Stefansky and him are on the same page. Cefansky said, I can promise you in decisions as it pertains to personnel. I'll be involved. I want to hear that. That's what's a big issue with Cleveland in the past that the GM and the coach. are not on the same page.
Starting point is 00:32:55 GM cannot pick players that the coach is not aligned with. It doesn't make any sense. I've never understood it. You want to build a team, not just pick a bunch of players that one GM likes or the coach likes this guy. Like, everyone needs to be on the same page. So they're building a culture. I'm here for it.
Starting point is 00:33:10 Finally, Tom Brady's much anticipated free agency decision has created a lot of speculation around the league and Bill Belichick. According to Tom Curran said he would prefer to have Brady back in 2020. for the right price. But if it comes to a crossroads, he would be able to get his mind around saying goodbye to Brady as well. I think you are on a little bit more of a positive ends on this. Like, this is more positive news.
Starting point is 00:33:36 Well, let me ask you. We talked about this yesterday. You can't have the third best quarterback in your division. Right. You'd prefer not to have the second best, but you can get to the playoffs with that. Tom's the best quarterback this morning in that division. So let's not go nuts.
Starting point is 00:33:52 for one more year, he's the best quarterback in that division. From Belichick's perspective, yes. From Tom's, I don't know. And I do think that wording matters. And if it's a direct quote that he would prefer, that's not very strong. Like, at this point in time, you would want to hear, we absolutely want Tom back.
Starting point is 00:34:14 Well, Tom is 43. I think prefer is fine at 43. Love at 33. But not if you're in a situation where he might leave. And then you're not going to have the best quarterback in the division. Look at this way. When I'm 75, my wife would prefer I don't kick the bucket. But if I do.
Starting point is 00:34:34 75, geez, Colin, bump it up a few years. Okay, 85. Okay. She'd rather have George Clooney, but she'd prefer I not die so she's not home alone with the dogs. So when you get older, people would prefer you more than need you. But you just said he's the best quarterback. So they do need him. Well, yes.
Starting point is 00:34:55 For a year, Tom is the best quarterback in the division, and they don't have a succession plan. Right. So I think, yeah, we prefer to have Tom. But you can't go out and say, oh, my God, this is, it's probably a two-year proposition at most at this point. I don't know. I don't think that that wording is very strong,
Starting point is 00:35:13 especially coming off of, you know, Tom versus time, and he doesn't feel appreciated, and he's, you know, putting these, like, subtle little Hulu commercials out. I don't know. I think, you know, words matter. They do. All right. Joy with the news.
Starting point is 00:35:29 Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. I have so much good stuff today. Oliver Luck, the XFL starts Saturday. You know I'm a big believer on this. I want to buy a team. I wanted to buy the UFC. I wanted to buy a team in the MLS.
Starting point is 00:35:43 I want to buy an XFL team. It's going to work. It starts Saturday. One of the reasons it works is, and there are several sports gamblings now, Fox and ESPN, the two biggest domestic sports markets are covering it. It's going to work. We've got a hole in the calendar.
Starting point is 00:35:57 That's another thing. You have 33 sports networks all dying for content. But we're going to talk about what you're going to see. There's crazy rules. Oliver luck plus Andy Reid top of next hour. We are packed today. A ton of NBA stuff as well. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific.

And in recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience in the mental health field and conversations. with so many incredible guests. I'm talking. Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing.
Starting point is 00:37:31 And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross. Because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth? Are you a good person because you're afraid?
Starting point is 00:37:45 Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Kear Gaines, is we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast, Learn the Hardway. Open your free iHeartRadio app. Search Learn the Hardway and listen now. What's up, guys? This is Clivert Taylor the Fourth. And on my podcast, The Cliverts Show, I'm bringing you conversations about all kinds of stuff. Like being an internet famous referee. We're in the middle of a game. This linebacker walks up to me, he goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her. What?
Starting point is 00:38:25 Time out. Quarterback on office blue with 42. Hey, ref, my mama want you to wave at her. What? Where's she at? Hey, Miss Parker. Listen to the Cliverts show on the Iheart radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. Hey, I'm Jordanano.
Starting point is 00:38:46 You might know me as that loud guy who yells out, help! the internet. Help! Somebody! Please! But there's so much more to me than me. I'm an actor. I'm a comedian, and recently,
Starting point is 00:38:57 I've become quite the helper myself. And on my new podcast, hope from a hypocrite, I'll be changing lives, helping people in need with my sage advice and thoughtful solutions.
Starting point is 00:39:09 Sike! I'm a comedian. I'm not qualified to give good advice. Join me and my comedian friends as we riff, rant, recommend some of the most legally dubious advice. known to man. If I'm calling you, even if you're on your phone, let it ring twice.
Starting point is 00:39:25 One ring is too scary. Oh, cream a chicken suit. Hey, cream a chicken suit. This is Help from a Hypocrite, the worst advice from the dumbest people you know. Listen to Help from Hypocrite as part of the Mike Cultura podcast network available on the IHartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. All right, it starts Saturday and Sunday on Fox, the XFL. I've said before it's going to work for about four reasons. Number one, you have the two biggest sports companies,
Starting point is 00:39:54 broadcasting companies in the domestic market that's called America, Fox and the SBN on board. Vince McMahon is one of the world's great promoters is on board. There's a lot of capital here. We have now a bunch of sports programming companies dying for content. We've got an eight to ten week hole in the calendar, and we've got Oliver Luck running it. One of the smartest guys I know in sports.
Starting point is 00:40:17 He joins us in New York. It starts Saturday via the Coworthy. Global Satellite Network. Okay, it's going to look a lot like the NFL, and then there's areas. It's not going to look like the NFL. So let's start with some of the fun stuff here. For instance, you gave great thought. You and I have been talking about this for over a year, the PAT.
Starting point is 00:40:35 You gave this a lot of thought, Oliver. How will it be different and why? So the PAT is going to be fundamentally different. No kicking. You score a touchdown and you get six points, but the extra point, are is threefold. You can go for one, you can go for two, you can go for three. They're all plays from scrimmage, so no kicking involved. The one point plays from the two yard line, two point from the five, three point from the ten. Here's the rationale, Colin. In the National
Starting point is 00:41:05 Football League, even after moving the kick back, the extra point back, kickers are still converting 94-95 percent. It's a fate all complete. There's not a lot of drama, not a lot of strategy. We thought, let's bring additional strategy into the game and give a coach three options. Again, all plays from scrimmage, one point, two point, or a three point play. We also think, as you get into the second half, into the fourth quarter, you know, going for a nine point touchdown. That's a way to shorten that, you know, make a three score game, a two score game or a two score game, a two score game, a one score game. So it just adds strategy. I think any time you can add strategy in football, it's a plus for the fans because we all love the second.
Starting point is 00:41:46 guess our head coaches, of course. College and pro football have struggled since I was a kid on overtime. I've always had a goofy rule. Road team gets the ball first because if you can't at home with 13 possessions beat me, I get the ball first in overtime. That's my goofy rule. What are you going to do with overtime? Because the world of football struggles with it since you played.
Starting point is 00:42:09 So we have a shootout concept. So if the lucks are playing the cowherds and we're tied, the luck offense and the cowherd defense, runs a play from the five-yard line, and then the cowherd offense, the luck defense, runs a play from the five-yard line. Five plays each, alternating, much like a hockey shootout or a soccer shootout. It's fair because the guys who decided to, the regulation 60 minutes to get the game into overtime are the ones deciding the overtime. Again, no kicking, but it's the 22 starters on my team, the 22 starters on your team that decide overtime. And it has the benefit of being
Starting point is 00:42:46 relatively short. We think we can get that all done in six to seven minutes. Yeah, by the way, the luck family would crush the Cowherd family. You got two NFL quarterback, so we wouldn't have a lot of success there. Yeah, we do a double forward pass. That's what we do. So let's go to, the ball's different. I've seen it. So let's just go to a couple of aesthetics here. So the ball's different. Explain that. Ball's a little bit different. It's got a different pebble. There's actually a fine X in the pebble, a relatively large X that spreads across the pebble.
Starting point is 00:43:17 our kickers, our quarterbacks, absolutely love it. And then we also have a little bit of paint, if you will, a little bit of color on each end. And that really comes from a simple sort of comment I made to Vince McMahon a number of months ago. I said, Vince, you know, when kids start to play football and they're being taught how to catch a ball, coaches often put a dollop of paint.
Starting point is 00:43:38 Probably the first time the word dollop's been used on your show, by the way. Put a dollop of paint on each end, and it helps that kid focus on the ball and catching the front half of the ball as opposed to the back half of the ball. So it was a simple comment. We played around with it, and we love it. Our quarterbacks have been using this ball now
Starting point is 00:43:55 for seven or eight months. They're used to it. The kickers are used to it. It looks pretty cool. In fact, when you see it in the air, it's really special. Legalized gambling over a year ago. Supreme Court rules. You can gamble now state by state.
Starting point is 00:44:07 We have a little bit of a wave. There's maybe six, eight, nine, ten states now, probably up to 40 states in the next five years. Do you have any connection to gambling? How will you embrace that? Adam Silver now says we're all in eventually very soon. How about you guys? Well, we want to engage with the gambling community.
Starting point is 00:44:25 It's obviously an important part of sport fandom, if you will, and it's important for our fan engagement. So we'll be running sort of on the bottom of our games. We'll be running the over-under and the line for the game. We want to make sure we maintain integrity because that's critical for any league, including ours, but we certainly want to engage with the gambling community. It's an important part of our fan base, no question about it.
Starting point is 00:44:48 The timing is interesting, and I've said this thing's going to work because we've got a sports calendar now. I'm a sportscaster. People used to say August is bad, and I'm always like, no, August is NFL preseason. I'm in college football. I love August. But February to March, I've been looking for eight weeks of content. So you picked it because I first thought when you started this league, man, that's right after football. So why choose the following weekend?
Starting point is 00:45:12 Is it simply because research? show something that people still want the season extended? Well, I mean, we all know anecdotally how many people, you know, at least say they fall into the funk, they fall into the depression because there's no more football after the Super Bowl. So I think the idea of starting strong right after football's biggest week, the Super Bowl, I think is a great idea. And we expect folks to sort of transfer their viewing habits, two games on a Saturday afternoon, like college, two games on a Sunday.
Starting point is 00:45:44 afternoon, like the NFL. So we think that's a real easy way to transfer those folks from their Super Bowl experience throughout the fall and, you know, and peaking with the Super Bowl into the start of our season. So I think it makes a lot of sense. The only downside, in a sense, can be weather, right, and some of the markets we're in New York or Washington, D.C., but I think that the timing is going to be absolutely perfect. Okay, by the way, Houston against the L.A. Wildcats, that's this Saturday on Fox, then the Tampa Bay Vipers against the New York Guardians on Fox. That is Sunday. Oliver Luck, the XFL Commissioner. By the way,
Starting point is 00:46:17 Fox Bet has the Dallas renegades as the favorite. That's the Bob Stoops team. So of all the teams you've seen, you're a commissioner, you're not supposed to have a favorite. But if I said to you, Dallas is the favorite from your eyes. You know football. Do they
Starting point is 00:46:33 look like a favorite? Dallas has looked pretty good. Hal Mummy is the offensive coordinator. He's the architect of the air raid. There's no question. They're going to throw the ball 60 or 70 times. I can't wait really until Dallas and Houston teed up. June Jones, who, of course, is well known for his, you know,
Starting point is 00:46:52 his offensive exploits. So what I like about, though, all of our eight teams is there's a high degree of parity. So I'm not going to answer your question about who looks the best right now. I think they're all pretty equal as we go into the season. Oliver, great talking to you. Good luck. He's in New York. And it starts Saturday.
Starting point is 00:47:08 Thanks, Oliver. Thanks, Colin. You bet. It's great. I mean, this is going to be a home run. I said years ago, I was at another sports company, and I think I've told you this before, Joy, the UFC sold for $12 million to the Fratita family. Right. And I went about a year later, I had read that.
Starting point is 00:47:26 I went to a big boss, big shot boss at my other company, and I said, you better get in on this. Because you guys are all Red Sox fans in the Northeast. This puppy is growing fast. They didn't buy it until about 10 years later when it sold for $4 billion. When the MLS started, I tried to buy into a team, not buy a team, buy a team, buy in at 35 million. That was the fee to get in. It's now 185 million. I would buy an XFL team. Fox, ESPN, you got, you know, you have the Disney brand, you got the Murdoch brand, you got Vince McMahon brand, you got an eight to 10 week hold in the schedule, sports gambling is legal.
Starting point is 00:48:01 I mean, I'm watching these, I'm watching these, you know, bar stools selling for $450 million. Why? Because they're content. I just saw yesterday Bill Simmons thing, the ringer. It's selling for, you know, couple hundred million. Why? It's content. The world now has changed. We are all dying for content. And they really, the void, the hole in the calendar is today for nine weeks until you get into March Madness, the combine, free agency, and the draft in the NFL. Sports and politics are the last live things that you have to watch happen live. That's right.
Starting point is 00:48:37 So it's a premium. Andy reads around the corner, Valentine's Day. That's around the corner too. Tommyjohn.com. Code heard. Get 20. 20% off your first order. Limited edition lounge wearing underwear. Tommyjohn.com code herd. One more herd. The herd streams 24 hours a day,

He's getting miced up and Joy Taylor's joining me. By the way, Joy Taylor and I, Fox
Starting point is 00:52:48 has provided to all of us here wellness shots because we're everybody back from the Super Bowl. Goulet and I, we used to work together at the other place. The Super Bowl in Phoenix, it was New England against New York. We got back from Phoenix and the whole company got sick. Yeah. I was literally talking into a tin cup. Like we had everybody. You didn't have engineers, you didn't have board operators. So, everyone's died. So Fox, this is very smart. got everybody wellness shots because this is the week in our business that everybody gets sick is you're exhausted, you're in Miami, a couple extra cocktails, you stay up late at night, you come back to work and you're done. I was sick before I went to Miami, so I'm still sick, but I just took one and now I have the hiccups, so I apologize if that happens. You know, there's the, I heard a funny line the other day.
Starting point is 00:53:36 You know, my wife, you know, I say something and I say, oh, I like your jacket. Right. Where'd you get that new jacket? She goes, well, no, I saved you money on this. it was on sale. And the old joke is, God, I'm going to go broke with you saving me money. And we joke about this, good nature,
Starting point is 00:53:51 but there is a, the media loves to spend everybody else's money. The media is always saying, pay for that player, pay for that player. Is your money? Okay, because you're an expert. We're all experts in the media spending your money as a GM or an owner.
Starting point is 00:54:06 And there's an old rule in investing. Never invest in a company unless everybody's got their own money in it. Not daddy's money. Daddy's rich and daddy hands you a bunch of money. I want to, no, no, no, no, no. You're just losing daddy's money. Your money. Kay, Chief, I'm not interested in your daddy. I'm interested in you. Never go into business with a rich dad's kid who doesn't have his own money because they don't have the sweat and the game. They got nothing to lose. It's daddy's money. And so everybody says,
Starting point is 00:54:40 mokey bets, $400 million. What were the Red Sox thinking? And I thought all lot about this last night because my first I became your typical media guy. How can you not spend 400 million bucks? You can't spend $400 million on a baseball player. Mike Trout finished in fourth last year.
Starting point is 00:54:59 The Angels with Mike Trout, the World Series odds the same as the Cincinnati Reds. The Atlanta Braves, you can't name two players on the Braves. Fourth best World Series. odds. The Dodgers keep either getting to the World Series or winning their division, and they won't spend big money until Mookie Betts. The reality is, if I asked you, Mookie Betts wants $400 million
Starting point is 00:55:25 for 10 years, in the entire world, I'm not talking like, let's not talk global soccer, but I'm talking all of our pro leagues. If I said, 400 million 10 years, 40 million a year, there is one guy I'd pay it to, Patrick Mahomes. and I would have a meeting and consider Janus. That is it. I love Russell Wilson. He's 31. I want to be paying him 40 million a year at 29.
Starting point is 00:55:53 That runaround stuff's not going to look as good at 38 as it does at 31. And I love Russell. One guy, Mahomes. That is it. And for the record, baseball's not football. You can't get to Super Bowls generally consistently without a real guy, a Hall of Fame guy throwing it, a Peyton, a Brady, a breeze, a Marys, a Marys. Holmes. That gets you to the game. You can have the occasional cap or nick in a system, but that doesn't last very long.
Starting point is 00:56:20 So, again, the media loves spending everybody else's money. Mookie bets. I can't do it. Mike Trout's in fourth place. Mike Trouts, he had never won a playoff game. You can't name players on the Braves. They have fourth best odds. So I get it. I mean, I get it. I would spend it on Patrick Mahomes, and I would have a meeting on Janus. I would sit down and have a meeting and figure out a way to make it work. Well, first of all, I picked San Francisco to win the Super Bowl, and I said, I hope I'm wrong. Because one of my favorite humans in the NFL is Andy Reed. And I think we were all, I think the league, I think everybody here, even my friends, I live next to San Francisco 49ers fans in Los Angeles.
Starting point is 00:57:05 And they were all like, yeah, but we lost Andy Reed. We all like Andy Reed. We're okay with Kansas City winning. He joined us now via the Tower Global Satellite Network, powered by Mercedes-Benz the best or nothing. You know, Andy, I know you're a football guy, and you don't listen to most of us loud mouse on radio and TV. But there was this thing hanging over you for a long time. Well, Andy can't win the Super Bowl. Did it ever even a little bit, coach, bother you?
Starting point is 00:57:34 Not really. I feel better about seeing the smile and the tears. with the players and the coaches. And I've always been that way. I'm in it to teach and to do all of that. And I don't listen to the other part of it. Yeah. That does mean I don't want to take away from the fact that I like to win.
Starting point is 00:57:56 And so that's a big part of it. And that's obviously the ultimate goal of all of us is to win the Super Bowl. So it's a I love the experience. You know, Andy, I said before the game, I felt you had the best player, but they had a deeper roster. When you were looking at film for two weeks with San Francisco, Andy, did you ever look at that and think, fellas, they got a lot of talent here.
Starting point is 00:58:26 This is going to be a four-hour effort for us to win. Were you at times looking at that film thinking, have we met our match? No, I didn't look at it that way. I looked at it that their defensive front sure was good. and then you're always looking for matchups and that or miss-matt, however you want to call it. But matchups become a big thing in the NFL. So I thought we were okay going into it.
Starting point is 00:58:53 I did say, though, that I thought it would take four quarters. You had the two best teams of football playing each other. And so we prepared ourselves for that, and that's kind of what we got. Andy, people won't talk much about your defense because of your offensive history and success. but I felt in week 11 to week 12, I don't know what happened, but something clicked, Andy, and your defense was significantly better.
Starting point is 00:59:17 What was it? Well, I think we made progress all the way through. It was small increments. So to somebody's eye that's possibly not a coach, you're not going to see those small things that were taking place. The players saw it. That's why they all bought in and stuck together during that time and didn't turn on the coach and things that you see in this league.
Starting point is 00:59:40 So I felt like if we just hung in there and kept that going with those small increments, eventually this thing would kick in and it come to our advantage. And that's what ended up happening. Two and a half years ago, Peter Schrager said to me, he said, I just talked to Andy Reid. And I went, he goes, this Mahomes kid is even Andy can't contain himself. So I want to go back. Obviously, you looked at a bunch of college stuff. And then you draft him.
Starting point is 01:00:07 And then he's in your rooms on your practice. field. Go to the moment, Andy, when you turned to your personnel guy, your GM, Brett Veach, and said, oh, Lord, this is all different. When did you know? Well, first of all the credit to Brett Veach. He's the one that laid his name out there to Dorsey and I and made us watch clip after clip after clip. And so we brought him in for this six-hour interview and beat him up for that period. And I came out of that going, you know what, there's some things here that Brett said he was the best player to ever since. I can see some of these characteristics that he talked about with leadership and how intelligent he is and all those things.
Starting point is 01:00:46 Well, then you go, well, let's see what he can do here, you know. And then he comes in, and during the rookie minicamp, I go, all right, he did well with the rookies. And then the vets come in. And all of a sudden, now you see those veteran players that have been around a little while, Justin Houston, Eric Berry, these guys go, oh, my gosh, this guy's unbelievable. And so, and So I'm going, all right, well, now we've got to see him in a game. He had a chance to play against Denver and he did that same stuff, you know, and the rest has been history here. You know, now you're the champ, Andy.
Starting point is 01:01:20 Listen, it is, you're going to be good for a long time. But now the standards changed. We want Super Bowls from Andy Reed and Patrick Mahomes. How do this is a unique territory you celebrate? It's the top of the world. How do you defend against, you know, the kind of things. we know happened, how do you become the Patriots and not a one-off?
Starting point is 01:01:44 I think you need to stay humble, and that's what this team was all about this year. They stayed humble and they worked hard. And so if you had to draw two characteristics from them, that's what you drew, and then they've got to understand that. I think we have a couple of core players in there that are
Starting point is 01:01:59 naturally that way, and I don't think all of this will get to them. And but, you know, we'll see. We'll see how it goes. I love the challenge, though. I mean, let's go. Let's roll and see how it goes. There's nothing that time tells that story, and we'll just see how it rolls. Hey, during the game, you guys have now kind of a trend of playing from behind.
Starting point is 01:02:22 I know it's not ideal. I know Andy Reid doesn't wake up on Sunday and say, I can't wait to play from 10 down. Explain it because you're great at it, but you don't want to play from behind. What kind of goes on through that? Well, that wasn't really our MO coming into the playoffs. that we normally had the lead. We get in the playoffs, all of a sudden where there's behind team, 24, 10, 7, and now that's who we are.
Starting point is 01:02:49 But up to that point, that's not the case. But listen, we did good with it, and you're right. I'm getting too old, man, this heart right here. Doggone. Again, those leads, they drive you about crazy. But our guys, they handled it well. I'm proud of how they handled it on both sides of the ball. You've really got to see the unity and the,
Starting point is 01:03:09 and the personality of this football team through that adversity. And I'm proud of, you know, again, I'm proud of how they handle it, coaches and players. By the way, seven seasons with the Chiefs, it's great for the league to have a well-liked and respected coach and quarterback, Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reed in Kansas City, right smack dab in the middle of the country, a smartly owned franchise. Now, you're a workaholic. You admit that. You love the game. Now, can you take five or six days off and just forget football now?
Starting point is 01:03:43 You know, go to Mexico, go to Miami. Are you going to take a little break, a tiny break? Listen, I'm not going to Mexico or there. I'm coming to see you, doggone it, and get a nice big in-and-out burger or something. I'm going to sneak out to California for a couple days and take a breather. I will tell you this, Joy, your hometown there treated us like gold, and they were beautiful. and the food was perfect, man. We had some Cuban food that was unbelievable,
Starting point is 01:04:15 and a few of those sandwiches went down real easy. Thank you, Andy. Andy, everybody is so happy for you, and congratulations. You know how much we adore you, and it's great for Kansas City and everybody involved. Thanks so much, Coach. All right, Colin, thank you.
Starting point is 01:04:31 All right. Just a great story. It's like my football circle's complete now. Andy Reid's got a Super Bowl. I don't have to defend it for the next 10 years. We all know he's a great coach. It's good. Okay, we got a trade in the NBA.
Starting point is 01:04:43 Pow! Next, don't go anywhere. Pow! Love trade deadline day. We just opened a present. There's a big cool tricycle in there. Awesome. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific.

Starting point is 01:08:12 The Daytona 500 kicks off the 2020 NASCAR season, February 16th on Fox. By the way, upgrade to Michelin Endurance XT Silicon Wiper Blades. Winter weather's lousy. Two times longer. Available at Walmart. Okay, we got an NBA trade. I actually think it's good for both teams. Here's the trade.
Starting point is 01:08:30 The Minnesota Timberwolves have had Carl Anthony Towns and Andrew Wiggins for years. Carl Anthony's there one. Wiggins is there too. Wiggins is not good enough to be a. two. He's a three. He can be your third best player in a championship team. About 22 a night, 6-6, soft, talented. He's Harrison Barnes.
Starting point is 01:08:47 The Warriors get him because Minnesota's done dealing with Carl Anthony Towns and Wiggins. Like him beating Simmons, they don't work. Okay, they just don't work. They're both kind of too young. So Golden State says, okay, we'll give you some picks and some players, and we'll give you some players, and you give us a pick, and we'll take
Starting point is 01:09:03 Andrew Wiggins at Golden State, and he'll be our third best player. I think it's a good fit. So I think It's good for Minnesota because DiAngelo Russell, to me, is talented enough to be your second good player. And you can start over. Carl Anthony Towns, you're big. DeAngelo's your point, your scoring point. It works.
Starting point is 01:09:21 Wiggins, I think DeAngelo Russell is a weird fit in Golden State. I think he's a really nice fit in Minnesota, where you kind of want to reboot it. I mean, how long can you keep selling the fans Wiggins and Cat? You can't. Like, everybody gets it. It doesn't work. Russell's a nice player. Can give you 20 a night.
Starting point is 01:09:37 He'll handle a ball, and you'll get it to car. Carl Anthony Town. So you got your big guy down low, you got your point guard to run the offense. And I like DeAngelo Russell, but he was a weird fit in Golden State. Golden State says, we think DeAngelo Russell's good, but we want somebody that fits better. We don't need a number one player. We got staff. We don't need a number two player. We have Clay Thompson. What we could use is a really, really high-end three player. And the Warriors get Andrew Wiggins. Again, he's a more talented Harrison Barnes, a little more vertical, a little more explosive, like Harrison Barnes.
Starting point is 01:10:08 You know, people say, you know, a little soft. He does average 22 a night. I've said this before. He's been a disappointing, in my opinion, disappointing shooter and defender in the league. He's an average three-point shooter. But again, Golden State doesn't need him to be great because they have the two best three-point shooters, arguably, in the game.
Starting point is 01:10:26 So I think Golden State ends up saying, we got a bunch of picks, and we got a really good number three player. and we need a 6-6-6-wing. So Golden State now goes, Steph, Clay, when it's healthy, Steph, Clay, Wiggins, Draymon, Luni, a pretty good team. It's small, but it's a good team.
Starting point is 01:10:46 And Minnesota can say, all right, we did the thing. It didn't work. Let's start over. Golden State also gave him Jacob Evans and Amari Spelman. So, you know, whatever. But I think it's trade deadline.
Starting point is 01:10:59 It's a bunch of presents. Most never get opened. And when you open them, you don't get anything. this is good. The Warriors next year are going to have a lottery pick. They've got four veterans in Draymond. Wiggins is now moving into the veteran territory, been in the league a while.
Starting point is 01:11:15 Stefan Clay, you've got a great coach, great GM, and I think he fits. Sports is about fitting. And this feels very New England Belichekian. We're going to get a guy whose value is a little low now because everybody's been bagging on Wiggins for two years. You're not as good, number one pick. Everybody's bagging on him.
Starting point is 01:11:31 You know, Belichick sneaks in and says, okay, he's not as good as we thought, but in our system, he fits. Very Belichekian, very smart for the Warriors. And I'm not going to bag on Minnesota. I was over the Wiggins-Carl Anthony Town thing. Like, I'm over it. And I like DeAngelo Russell. I do.
Starting point is 01:11:48 I actually think, you know, he's a 20-pointed game guard. I don't have a problem with DeAngelo Russell run on my basketball team. I don't think he's the best, but he's a good player. Here's Joy with the News. No, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the. heard line news.
Starting point is 01:12:04 All right, some more trade news. Andrea Godala got his wish and was traded from the Grizzlies. Memphis agreed to send Iggy to the Heat in exchange for Justice Winslow, Dionne Waiters, and James Johnson. The Grizzlies will also send Solomon Hill and Jay Crowder to Miami. Aguadala also agreed to a two-year extension with the heat worth 30 million. Memphis and Miami tried to turn this into a three-team deal that would also send Golanari from the Thunder to the Heat.
Starting point is 01:12:31 but Woj is reporting that those talks have stalled. So Winslow is a young player. Memphis is rebuilding. He has injury issues, but Miami did like Winslow. No, this is sad to see Winslow go. I mean, he was their top draft pick a few years ago. And I mean, James Johnson and Deon Waders had a couple issues internally with the team this year. And they also cleared some money off.
Starting point is 01:12:54 They got some defensive depth with Solomon Hill and Jay Crowder. So it's a good move for both teams. I don't think anyone lost in this situation. Obviously, the heat are fourth in the east right now, 34 and 16. By the way, and Igadala hasn't played all season. Yeah, he got two years from Miami, didn't he? Yes, two-year extension, 30 million. That is a lot for Andreiglidala.
Starting point is 01:13:15 I mean, he's a vet. He played the situation perfectly. But, you know, Igadala is one of those players that when you are in the postseason, which is what Pat Riley is gearing up for here, he's going to be valuable. Like, they have a lot of young players. Yeah. So having someone that has an experience. that Iguodala has, I mean, to me, I think that's worth it. Plus, they also got some
Starting point is 01:13:36 bench depth, which is important. So the 76s are a little lost right now. They've lost three straight games and have dropped to six-sixth seed in the east. And Joelle Ambita's blaming a lack of offensive identity for the team struggles. Space is an issue. You know, sometimes we play fast, sometimes we play slow. But at the end of the day when you think about it and as we're trying to get ready for the playoffs also you know the game slows down it becomes a half-cold game and that's where we struggle the most so hopefully we do a better job in the next the games well they had their worst loss of the season on Monday to the heat 137 106 watch that Ben Simmons called the team soft yep out
Starting point is 01:14:29 Horford says there's some stuff going on in our locker room. We'll keep that internal. JJ Reddick, if you remember on a podcast a few months ago, said, players these days, it sounded like a direct shot at M. Beden Simmons said they're more worried about what they wear and what they put on Instagram. Yeah, that was such a get off my one. But let's say this.
Starting point is 01:14:50 Philadelphia yesterday made a move that nobody talks about Alex Berks, Glenn Robinson the third. Their first seven. Philadelphia's first seven. I'll make the argument is the best seven, first seven in the east, including Milwaukee. This is not a talent issue. This is a R2 stars don't get a long issue. Well, then you've got to be aggressive because what are you doing?
Starting point is 01:15:15 I mean, what did you go through all that process for to get to this point if you still can't get it done? I think Broussard said this earlier. Okay, we have this seven now. We're going to let it bake for the rest of the year. Now, if it doesn't win two. playoff series, we get to blow it up. I mean, how do you not? Oh, you have to.
Starting point is 01:15:33 You can't. Philadelphia's talent is better than Milwaukee's your first seven players. I absolutely believe that. I don't know. I just feel like this has been the conversation about when this is going to get going. And it's not that hasn't gotten going, but at this point, you should be not having these kind of internal issues. Not at this point in the season and not this far along with them being together.
Starting point is 01:15:55 Like, there's something going on here, which I'm sure we'll find out at the end of the season. Yeah. But it kind of likens to a little bit of what was going on in Boston, where we're like, we have all this talents. Should be playing with a little bit more fluidity than this at this point in the season, and it's not happening. Finally, Jimmy Garoppolo has taken a lot of blame for the 49ers' fourth quarter breakdown
Starting point is 01:16:15 in the Super Bowl, and he says he will use the loss as fuel going into the offseason. It is what it is. If you just look at the stats like that, like you said, I mean, yeah, it is what it is. we've, you know, as an offense, as a team, we've been in that situation, you know, multiple times and, you know, we've answered the bell and just, it's tough when, you know, that one time, you know, you didn't. And so, but that's what, that's what people will remember. It's the world we live in and you just got owned up to it and, you know, be a man about it.
Starting point is 01:16:40 And so it'll, like I said before, it'll fuel us in this off season, fuel me especially in this off season just to, you know, come back better. Emmanuel Sanders says he's watched the Super Bowl five or six times already. And it's like watching a Titanic and you. hope the ship just don't sink. And for some reason, the ship just keeps sinking over and over. Look, I can't imagine what it's like to lose a Super Bowl, but I will say I do think the 49ers are in a good position. You kind of threw it out there, but obviously you have not given any thought to who you think will be in the Super Bowl next year.
Starting point is 01:17:14 San Francisco. I don't know. I think there's going to be a lot of movements this offseason with some pretty important players. I'm very interested to see how the draft goes, but I think there's going to be some teams that pop. I don't want to discount the Eagles next year because they're not going to have the same injury problems that they had this year.
Starting point is 01:17:34 But I will say they're in the good position moving forward. No reason to bail on Garapolo, no reason to overreact. There are one or two plays from winning it. And that's really what everyone always overanalyzes what happens in these games, as we should. It's the biggest game, and they didn't get it done. But don't overreact. They're in the good position.
Starting point is 01:17:51 They did all the things they needed to do. they just didn't get it done. Somebody has to lose. Yes, that's right. Somebody has to. Joy with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by.
Starting point is 01:18:02 The Herd Lye News. Casper.com, code Herd. Get you $100 toward the purchase of select mattresses. Casper.com, the most loved and trusted sleep company in America. I got so many things to talk about Rick Buecker at the start of next hour. The Warriors made a trade. Let me give you this trade one more time. Just if you're turning into us, the Warriors and the T-Wolves made a trade.
Starting point is 01:18:22 I think in the best world, both teams benefit. Andrew Wiggins and Minnesota, it wasn't working. They go to the Warriors and they say, give us DeAngelo Russell, the point guard for the future. So now you got your point guard, DeAngelo Russell, who can also score a little combo. And you get Carl Anthony Towns, who's a terrific big, and you kind of reboot it and they threw in a couple other players.
Starting point is 01:18:45 Golden State says, okay, DeAngelo's probably a little better than Andrew Wiggins. So we want Wiggins over in Golden State and give us some picks. And they did give him a 2021 protected first round pick and another second round pick. I actually think the fit is great. Let's talk mostly about Golden State because that's been the prevailing dynasty over the last four or five years. This Golden State team, Kevin Durant leaves everybody gets hurt and they make a decision. Let's just shut it down.
Starting point is 01:19:13 They're probably going to get the lottery pick, which they can keep, because they got enough veterans, they could keep it and have a really talented kid, or they can move that and get more players. But in the end, sports is about fit. Okay, there's a lot of guys. This has been Belichick's trait. This is where Belichick is great. Draymond Green is great in Golden State
Starting point is 01:19:35 with a very mature coaching staff and roster. If you put Draymond Green on a team and said, we need you to be our number two score, and it was a young, squirly team with a bad coach, you'd never hear from Draymond Green again. But in Golden State, when they had kind of a finesse team, he's the tough guy. He's the tough guy. And he can give you a little wild, a little crazy, and it's perfect.
Starting point is 01:19:58 He's perfect. Wiggins is a really good fit. He's the three. What they need, their backcourt's the best offensive back court of my lifetime. Draymond's inconsistent offensively, so is Looney. What you need is a guy in that wing, he's not Durant, but he's better than Harrison Barnes. He can give you 27 on any given night. He can shoot a little.
Starting point is 01:20:22 He's dynamic. He's not as good a defender as I thought he would be out of Kansas. He's not a great three-point shooter. But he has his moments, and he's very, very athletic. He's a nice, nice three. And he's going to a super smart system. They're not going to lean on him to carry the franchise. In Minnesota, Wiggins, who people thinks a little soft,
Starting point is 01:20:46 he was flailing. You're the guy. Okay, you're not good enough. You're the two. I'm not sure it works for him. In the NBA, there's so much talent. I mean, Kyle Kuzma can win, you know, Pac-12, all-conference.
Starting point is 01:21:03 He's an off-the-bench guy in the NBA. Wiggins is a three in this league on a really good team. He's a two on a weak team. He's a one on a lousy team. But he's a three in Golden State, and I think he fits. Well, let me say this about fit. I want to segue to this. So Kevin Durant admitted he was on a podcast.
Starting point is 01:21:23 You should, those things are really catching fire. With Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson, two guys we like. And Kevin Durant came out and said, you know what? I knew I was leaving the Warriors midway through last year. Now, I'd like to first say this. I support mobility. Always have. The rest of you media people, the rest of you fans crushed KD for leaving Westbrook.
Starting point is 01:21:45 I did not. Many of you crushed LeBron for leaving Cleveland twice in Miami. I did not. I also, Jimmy Butler, got tired of the immaturity in Minnesota and in Philadelphia, both had young stars. I'm like, all right, let's see how it works. It's worked well. By the way, I supported Kauai in San Antonio. I said, listen, remember what I said on the air?
Starting point is 01:22:14 I said Popovich can be pretty rigid. He's got a system. Kauai is a unique personality. And Kauai doesn't like the Fed. And Kauai doesn't like being called out by his coach and Tony Parker and Manu Janoply. I got it. I got Kauai saying, I don't trust your doctors. We all know our body better than doctors know our body.
Starting point is 01:22:32 We do. You can feel when you're sick. So I have always supported mobility. And then there are moments, though, when players don't realize how good they have it. Kevin Durant, if you'd have told him when he went to Golden State, you're going to win a title and be MVP, you're going to win a title and extra and be MVP, and the middle of the third year, you're going to be a number two seed averaging 28 and a half a game and shooting 50%.
Starting point is 01:22:59 He would have taken that to the bank. And he said, no, I want to go play with Kyrie Irving. Who, by the way, has already alienated half of the Brooklyn Nets after alienating LeBron and the Cavs and all of the Celtics coaches and players. I'll say it again. I am a huge supporter of NBA stars and mobility. I don't always think it's good for the league, but player empowerment I'm for.
Starting point is 01:23:28 I've moved a lot. Who am I to tell somebody not to move? But that doesn't mean I should have left ESPN and gone to vice. You know, I came to Fox, a well-run company. I think he made a mistake. The fact that he had decided in the middle of last year, after back-to-back titles, third year, two-seed, 28, 50%, and chose Kyrie Irvin.
Starting point is 01:23:50 I'll just say it again. I think it's a mistake. It's the one mobility move where I think the player is a little needy and a little immature, and I think it's going to haunt him. Because I think Golden State now is going to go right back near the top. I don't think they're done making moves, and they got all sorts of picks.
Starting point is 01:24:12 I'm for mobility, not all of it. Coming up next. Belichick, Rick Buecker, top of the next hour, more on the trade deadline. We'll get you more information on the Golden State Minnesota trade. Coming up next. Belichick finally acknowledges I'd prefer Brady and why he did. I wanted to get to this earlier. Could not.

Starting point is 01:28:02 There has been an NBA trade. get to it in a second. So Bill Belichick, according to Tom Curran, Tom Curran is the best New England Patriot reporter, I think, on the beat in New England. He said Belichick would prefer to keep Tom Brady for this year. Now, prefers not the most loving compliment to play to your franchise quarterback, but Brady's 43. You know, as I said earlier, when I'm 83, which is like quarterback dog years, blah, blah, blah, blah. At 83, my wife would prefer me to be around, but she's probably done tolerating most of my nonsense. Here's the reality with Brady right now.
Starting point is 01:28:36 The AFC, if you take out one player, Patrick Mahomes, is in a total transition period for quarterbacks. Take out Mahomes, best player on the planet. There's just as just the AFC. You got four quarterbacks in the Cross Your Fingers group, Josh Allen, Drew Luck, Baker Mayfield, and Sam Darnold. You know they're talented. It's not that.
Starting point is 01:28:58 They're all talented. Are you sure in eight years? years, they're going to be tearing up the league, you cross your fingers. You got four teams that don't even really have a quarterback. They're drafting one. Cincinnati, Chargers, Colts, Miami. You got four quarterbacks in the I'm not convinced group. Nick Foles, is he really as good as Gardner Menshoe?
Starting point is 01:29:18 Derek Carr, I keep hearing Gruden doesn't like him. Big Ben, I don't think he's aged well, and I haven't seen him throw a ball in a year. And Ryan Tannihill, franchise tag, what do you do with him? And then you have these two unbelievably gifted young players, Deshawn Watson Lamar Jackson, have done nothing in the playoffs. Deshawn has multiple injuries and he's been bad in January. Lamar, can he play from behind? I mean, I just saw Mahomes come back from double digits down three times to win.
Starting point is 01:29:49 Brady's come from behind multiple times. To this point, Lamar's wildly talented, plays a certain way. Let's let this thing bake for another, I don't know, 16 games before we anoint him, Mahomes, I don't think he ever will be. I think Patrick's a different, you know, cut a cloth as a quarterback. I think he's going to be one of the greats of all time.
Starting point is 01:30:10 So what I'm saying is there's a lot of finger crossing, a lot of, I'm not convinced, I'm a lot of never seen you win a big playoff game, a lot of coming off injuries, a lot of, we don't even have our guy yet. Brady is this morning one of the really safe bets if you can get him Greg Olson at tight end and A.J. Green,
Starting point is 01:30:33 if that happened in two weeks, you'd be like, all right, they're going to meet Kansas City. I mean, you'd feel really good with two players, two acquisitions. So, yes, they're 12 and 4. As Eric Mangini was sarcastically saying to Nick Wright this morning, the Chiefs fan, they have a history in New England of making the right moves. I think that when you go to the Super Bowl, four out of five years, you probably shouldn't get the benefit of the doubt.
Starting point is 01:30:57 I mean, you really haven't done enough. to make people think that you could probably correct the problems that you have. And I totally get that, Nick. There's no reason to think that this coaching staff would be able to fix it. I mean, would they go 12 and 4? So they limped into a 12 and 4 record. And so there's no reason for us to believe that they could possibly fix these things. He's right.
Starting point is 01:31:18 Brady right now is at Mahomes. And he's not as athletic, certainly, as Lamar Jackson or Deshaun. But the AFC quarterback's massive transition right now. massive transition. One other thing, I don't get many opportunities to say nice stuff about the Cleveland Browns, so when the opportunity presents itself, I like to take it. Yesterday, Jimmy Haslam, the impulsive owner, was talking about what he expects this year. He said it's going to be a big, big year for Odell Beckham.
Starting point is 01:31:46 Oh, great, an owner-making guarantees. Terrific. Let me just say this, though. The Cleveland Browns check a lot of boxes, and that's what this league's about. Shut down corner. Check. Pass rusher. Miles Garrett, they'll have him by October.
Starting point is 01:32:05 Check. Running back. You can lean on. Check. Weapons. Outside tight end. Check, check, check. Defensive line personnel.
Starting point is 01:32:16 You can match up. I like it, actually. I think it's a strength of their team. Check, check, check, check. Two things they were a disaster at. Only two things. head coach and tackle. They are atrocious on offensive tackle.
Starting point is 01:32:35 But in the NFL, you can sometimes get away with an average right tackle. You can't get away with a horrible left tackle. The Brown's primary issues last year came down to two things. They were lousy at head coach and they were anemic at left tackle. And they draft, I'm going to do a mock draft now, not only for one team, one pick. Here's my mock draft. The Cleveland Browns picking number 10. They're going to take one of these four guys. A tackle from Louisville, Josh Jones from Houston, Andrew Thomas from Georgia, or Tristan Wirthes from Iowa. There's a really good kid at Bama, but he'll already be gone.
Starting point is 01:33:18 So they're going to solve, Thomas would be my pick, they're going to solve their left tackle. by April 23rd. And they've already solved, in my opinion, their coaching issues. So when I look at Cleveland, when I look at Cleveland, April 23rd is a great day for the Browns. Because by that day, you will have solved not only your head coaching position, but your left tackle issue. And outside of that, you mostly check every other box in the NFL.
Starting point is 01:33:52 I don't love Baker, but he is a franchise quarterback, a pass rusher, a shutdown corner, good defensive line personnel, terrific weapons in 2020, and a running back Nick Chub I love. So the good news, I don't get many opportunities to say nice stuff about the Cleveland Browns. But when I do, this is it. I don't like the owner making promises about Odell Beckham's productive year. I can do that. I just talk. That's what I do.
Starting point is 01:34:21 owners shouldn't do that and make big promises. But April 23rd, the Cleveland Browns will have solved the only really two nightmares in their organization. Coach left tackle. So good for them. All right. We have an NBA pick, trade, excuse me. We want to mention again if you're just turning in. So Rick Buecker will join me at the top of the hour to talk about it.
Starting point is 01:34:44 Nobody knows the Warriors like Rick Buecker, the Golden State Warriors. and we always, we kind of felt this joy, that when they got DeAngelo Russell, we all knew, wait a minute. He's eventually going to be moved. Yeah, they got Steph, they got Clay, they don't need a third guard. They're going to show him off.
Starting point is 01:34:59 This is what we both said. They're going to show him off. And when Clay and Steph got hurt, you could really show him off. And then they're going to move him. We didn't know when they'd move him, but they finally got the deal they wanted. So Golden State moves DeAngelo Russell,
Starting point is 01:35:12 get some picks, and they get Andrew Wiggins and picks. Wiggins is not a one. I don't think he's a two. I think he's a pretty solid. solid three. I've said this before in the NBA. Anthony Davis is not a one. He's a 1A. He can be your second best player and you can win a championship. If Wiggins is your third or a 3A, to me, you're a championship team with Draymond, with Steph, with Clay, with Steve Kerr. So I like it for Golden State. Now, you could make certainly a case. They'll move Wiggins again.
Starting point is 01:35:45 But, you know, it's funny. We were talking about this off the air yesterday. This was, people have been talking, Goulet, were you yesterday, the one that brought this up? People had rumored Wiggins in Golden State yesterday. Maybe I saw it in the internet. And my takeaway was, he kind of fits them. He can shoot a little bit. He's athletic. He's a smart player.
Starting point is 01:36:04 But he's a little Harrison Barnes. I think he's more talented. They're not going to be a little soft. Well, you're not asking for toughness from him here. You don't ask him to be a great shooter here. You're not asking him to be the face of the franchise or a shutdown guy. They got Clay Thompson. He's a shutdown defender.
Starting point is 01:36:19 So I think he works really nice for Golden State. Now, they may move him, but I think it works. And they got a bunch of first-round picks coming up, their own lottery pick. Then they'll get two the following year because Minnesota sent him one. And I also think for Minnesota, you know, Wiggins, Carl Anthony Town, it didn't work. No, I think he fits there. And also the picks are huge for Golden State because we know this is a lost season for them. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:36:43 He doesn't have to be a defender, as you said. I think this is a smart move for them. And to that point also, there's very, very few ones in the NBA. What are there like four? Janice, Kauai, LeBron, Hardin, Steph. I think Steph is, yes. Okay, so five. No, let's go over it again.
Starting point is 01:37:07 Durant. Durant. Yeah, absolutely. Six. Yeah. There's a lot of other teams that need ones. So to expect. Anthony Davis is the best.
Starting point is 01:37:17 guy not in that group. Sure, but he's not a one. No, he's a 1A. We saw that already. Yeah, and he's got, you know, I mean, he gets banged up. And B, by the way, is a one talent. He is a one talent, but he gets banged up a lot. And he's a little immature.
Starting point is 01:37:29 But with unquestioned ones, there's six. Oh, somebody in my ear just said Luca. Luca's not yet. Luca is incredible, but he's not yet. He's 20. By the way, have you noticed Lucas hurt? Have you noticed this? Dallas is a fun watch.
Starting point is 01:37:44 So I've seen Dallas play about a half dozen times. Luca's a little banged up. Poor Zingis now. without Luca. Have you seen his numbers? He's shredding it. Like all those Nick fans. I mean, I like Porzingis had a major injury.
Starting point is 01:37:56 Remember that? And so there's a lot of concerns about Porzingis. Porzingis, when Luca's not on the floor, he is really, really good. Dallas is very interesting. Dallas has to figure out how to defend in the next couple of years. But as far as a watch, they're one of the best watches in the league. All right.
Starting point is 01:38:14 Valentine's coming up next Friday. Go to Tommy John's limited edition underwear and loungewear all up to 15% off. The code is Herd. Rick Buecker next. Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific. Oh, here we go. Live in Los Angeles, hour three trading deadlines up in a little more than an hour. This is The Herd, wherever you may be and however you may be listening.
Starting point is 01:38:43 We're on IHeart Radio. Sports Radio on FS1 a week ago. We were in 80-degree weather, and there were protesters screaming at us as we were doing our show. You could not tell. Joy and I got a big laugh out of that. It's great to have you in the trading deadline today, Joy.
Starting point is 01:38:59 It's a fun time. It's a Christmas tree with presents. We got some presents. I got some presents. You're a Miami Heat fan. I feel good about the trade. I got to tell you, though, if you didn't hear the people screaming on South Beach, like, obviously, you know, you're a legendary broadcaster
Starting point is 01:39:15 but I will tell you, I was so impressed with you because you were in the beginning of the show, which is like your most important rant focus time. And there was a guy nine feet from me. Oh my God, with a megaphone, I was so distracted. And I was just looking at you like, yep, this is why they're paying the big bucks because there's no way I would not crack. I wanted to scream. Yes. So I was like Andre Iigua.
Starting point is 01:39:34 I was being well compensated and now I'm in Miami and not doing much. And then I had eight minutes I had to concentrate. All right. Let's bring on Rick Buecker, Fox Sports NBA analyst. One of my buddies in this business, somebody I absolutely love, who covers the NBA but lives in San Francisco in surfing territory, so you know all about it. Okay, I'm just going to give you my takeaway.
Starting point is 01:39:56 Wiggins is a three in this league. He's not a two. He's been a bit of a disappointment. DeAngelo Russell's best friend is Carl Anthony Towns. So I think Minnesota today feels like, listen, at least they'll get along or two stars or buddies because Wiggins and Kat wasn't working. Yeah. Joy, what is it that he's so excited about two bad.
Starting point is 01:40:15 teams trading their problem players and the Miami Heat upgrade and make themselves a little closer to contenders and you're like, yeah. Colin loves transactions. Yeah. The draft. I love it. I love acquisitions. Yes. I'm the power hungry crazy person. I like that. She's right. I like, listen, DeAngelo and Wiggins are super talented. Yes. Sometimes in life, Rick. It's a lousy fit. Yes. You're right. And I like this. in that I don't like it from Minnesota. You don't? No, because that they're friends
Starting point is 01:40:52 and their friends who are both indifferent about playing defense scares me for the team. Yeah, they'll be bad defensively. Yes, and, you know, the poor one out for Ryan Saunders, because what's he supposed to do now in that he's obviously been co-opted?
Starting point is 01:41:09 It's cat and it's DeAngelo, and they're going to go as those two go, and I'm not confident. this, at least in Minnesota. Yeah. There were tensions between Wiggins and Carl Anthony. At least their games offensively would appear to work, and they like each other. Simmons and B. don't even like each other.
Starting point is 01:41:29 No, again, I like the change, and I like it for the Warriors, and that DeAngelo clearly their hope was he would adopt the Warriors culture. He clearly did not. It didn't change him whatsoever. He was still the same player. Andrew Wiggins, this is going to be the first time that he actually makes a move. And that always has an impact on a young player. Like, oh, wait a minute, I'm not a centerpiece.
Starting point is 01:41:55 Oh, I'm not, this is not, I'm not immovable. And sometimes it causes them to mature and to rethink how they play. And so I like taking a shot at can he adopt the warrior's culture? Can he become what he's physically capable of becoming? And as a three, he fits much better next to Clay and to Steph. But the other part, see, what makes me nervous is that you might be one of those people that is saying, oh, well, you flip DeAngelo and you got this number one pick or you got this first round pick that could be number one. The Warriors are going to be right back to contenders next year.
Starting point is 01:42:36 Well, why not? No. Okay, Kavon Luni, Drayman, Wiggins, Steph, Clay. Steve Kerr, why not? And a bunch of good draft picks. Because Kevin Durant covered a multitude of sins. I'm not saying they're going to win the title. Okay, but you're saying they're going to contend for a title?
Starting point is 01:42:54 You tell me, you tell me, three players, if I said, Steph Clay Wiggins, it's a pretty good top three. That's pretty darn good. Dallas has two. Clippers have three because of Lou Williams. Most teams don't have a third guy that can drop 24. Okay, but what they hung their hat on was defensively, and defensively that you could switch everything. Okay, but Wiggins, is it fair to say this? Wiggins is going to have to guard Paul George or Quay Leonard or LeBron James or like he's better.
Starting point is 01:43:28 He's better than what they have, but he's so good. Look, they used to have Andre Aguadala, Kevin Durant, Clay Thompson. You put any small forward out there, we're, we're, we're. going to rotate quality defenders through there. Now you're hanging on Andrew Wiggins and we'll see, I assume Clay Thompson's going to be the same as when he gets back. They're
Starting point is 01:43:49 not done making moves. They got picks all over the place. Go get some defensive help. Do you mean? I just, I need people to take a step back and appreciate what they were. Yes. And not like Iggy's gone and
Starting point is 01:44:05 ignore that Kevin just, he covered up a multitude of things that changed about that team. They weren't as deep. They were top-heavy. Yes. And these guys had played deep into five, six seasons in a row. Like they were worn out. Next year they won't be. We'll see.
Starting point is 01:44:24 Well, I mean, Clay's not playing. Steph's not playing. And that's like LeBron. LeBron had a great October, November, December, because he was rested. And maybe most important, though, can Draymond Green become a defensive player of the year again? No, but he can be good. Clay's excellent. You're still light on the bench. And this draft in particular, like, are you going to flip this pick for a couple of quality veteran players?
Starting point is 01:44:48 Yes, yes, yes. You're going to do that right now. Yeah, I don't want the lottery pick. Okay. I'm not interested at all. All right. Well, go give the lottery pick to Memphis or somebody. Your plan has some reason to it.
Starting point is 01:44:58 Yeah, Golden State is a mature franchise. They don't need lottery picks. You take that pick and you go to a team like Denver who is like, ah, we could really use some length. And I'm one more guy who can, we'll take. the pick and you give us blank. What they need now, they got scores. They need a tough guy. Like Draymond is one.
Starting point is 01:45:17 They're a small team now, by the way. Golden State is a small team with shooters. I'm not saying, I think you, listen, they're not going to be the Mercedes they were with Durant, but they're not a Kia. Next year they're going to be good. Yes, they will be good.
Starting point is 01:45:31 They should be a playoff team. Yes. For sure. I just, and maybe this is, we're, I'm misinterpreting what you're saying. I've just heard too much, particularly living in the Bay Area. Yeah. Like the pick, flipping DeAngelo Russell, oh, we're going to be right back at the top.
Starting point is 01:45:47 No. And I just think that's unrealistic. I think it's a Milwaukee Clippers League for about two to three years. Lakers just on the outside. Okay. Here's the other thing. In Miami. Let's slow down.
Starting point is 01:45:59 We'll get to that one second. So for years, Clint Capella, I heard three years ago. I love him. And then two years ago. I have lunch with Darryor Moore. We love him. and then I hear, you know, a year ago, I love him. Gives you a lot of easy baskets, protects the rim.
Starting point is 01:46:12 Today, they bail on him. Why? Because Westbrook can't shoot, and you can't have two guys on the floor that can't shoot, and you're tied to a $41 million deal over the next four years, which is, next to John Wall, untradable. I look at Houston today, and I feel like a mess, kind of. Small. You're making the wrong comparison.
Starting point is 01:46:32 You're pointing to the wrong thing. Clint Capella is Todd Gurley. the big man in the NBA is the running back in the NFL. You need one and you need a good one but you can't pay a premium price for it. So Capella, they had to pay to keep as an asset.
Starting point is 01:46:51 In the playoffs last year, they discovered oh, he's just a rim runner and he's way too expensive as just a rim runner. He's not a big time player. We need to get off of this, and they're also under new ownership and New ownership always likes. The first thing they like to do is get the books right
Starting point is 01:47:08 and what's cut the excess fat. We can get a guy who can basically do what Capella does for a lot less. We need to do that now because we're not going to pay heavy money for this. Now, the Russell Hardin thing, I'm not sure that that ultimately works and gets you to where you want to go. But this was really about for the same reason that the Rams would move Todd Gurley. We need to have flexibility and we've invested weight. too much in something that we can get for less.
Starting point is 01:47:38 But let's admit, the Hardin-Westbrook thing now? Yes. In the West, what is it? I agree. It's a bunch of nothing. It has the potential to be better in the postseason than it does right now. So I trust Hardin, okay? You're telling me my two and three in the playoffs are Covington and Westbrook.
Starting point is 01:47:57 That's what I got to depend on in the West. I'm not buying that. Again, I don't, I didn't see this as we're getting better or we're strengthening our ability to play for a championship right now. We have flexibility. Flexibility, get our books right, and we don't think we're going to be any worse. That's what I see that deal as. Let's have some crystal on that.
Starting point is 01:48:20 All right, let's go to Miami. So when Miami makes the Iggy deal, they're paying him a lot of money for two years, but whatever. The first thing I thought of was LeBron and the Lakers. So Pat Riley, first of all, there's a global presence with, the Miami Heat. It's a real owner, Pat Riley, Spolstra. It's a really smart guys. Okay, this is a really good organization. It's respected. I got aqua water in the winter. I got no state tax. It's the only Eastern team that has been very attractive to free agents. The Knicks haven't. Nets haven't. I mean, anybody would go to Miami in the winter.
Starting point is 01:48:54 It attracts. Everybody likes Miami. I was just there. I like Miami. Okay. But six years after LeBron leaves, it took. six years for Spolstra Riley, Mickey Erison, Aquawater to get to a point where we're like, oh, that's interesting. This is the downside to LeBron and the Lakers. 100%. Okay. So as Doug Gottlieb said, it's like the kid that comes over for your
Starting point is 01:49:21 kids party and everybody has fun. And then he leaves and the house is a disaster and everybody's sick. Yes. Is that you start trading away Kuzma. All these LeBron teams get old and expensive. Yeah. And so it took Pat Riley six years from LeBron to get interesting.
Starting point is 01:49:39 This is why I wouldn't have traded Kuzma. You can't just go to LeBron's whims and get old. What if the Lakers don't win this year? What are they next year? Rondo, Dwight, LeBron. Come on. But when you have LeBron and you have LeBron at this stage,
Starting point is 01:49:55 I honestly, I don't know that you can do it any other way. Really? Be just old and expensive. You swing for the fences and you go for it. Because what's the alternative? you're going to hedge your bet. The alternative is when LeBron leaves, we're not a grease fire
Starting point is 01:50:11 for eight years. But if you, what have they been for the last six years? I mean, the Lakers have been that. So if you get a championship, and by the way, if you get a championship that what, ties you with the Celtics in overall championships? Yeah, this is not the calves, though. I mean,
Starting point is 01:50:26 if you're the calves, you'll take the title because you've been irrelevant for 70 years. But these big historic brands are so much money, when the Lakers were bad for five years. It was tense. It was still better than the Clippers. The Clippers were the better team and the Lakers franchise still, their logo
Starting point is 01:50:45 and their brand still endured. So you would have traded Coosma to get an old guy. I'm not, well, look, if you were trying to do something in the playoffs this year, Coosma's not going to get it for you. I like, I like, are they appreciably better? Do I like them better overall as a playoff team right now? Or the anticipation that you're getting Marcus Morris for Kyle Kuzma and Danny Green.
Starting point is 01:51:08 Yes, yes, I am. I believe that you will be a better playoff team. Now, you got to re-sign Marcus. You got to re-sign Anthony Davis. I mean, that's the other part here. So you hedge your bet and you don't go anywhere in the playoffs. You're out in the second round. Does Anthony Davis say, I'm staying for this?
Starting point is 01:51:26 Yeah, no, yeah. But again, the Lakers, the Clippers are better, and Milwaukee's deeper. They're both better and better. Lakers don't have anybody that defends at this point. point. Milwaukee plays real defense. I don't like Miami, but they play defense. Smallsra makes you play defense. Clippers play real defense. I don't think the Lakers can defend well enough to win. If Anthony Davis is out for a game, they can't stop you and me. That's the biggest problem,
Starting point is 01:51:48 is that Anthony Davis has to be all that Anthony Davis has been to this point. LeBron James has to be all that he's been to this point. And can they both be that for the remainder of the season to maintain pace to not have the clippers blow by them? And by the way, who's first and who's second, really? They're playing in the same building. I mean, the colors change. That's it. All right.
Starting point is 01:52:11 We got another one. You got any music? Got breaking news stuff back there, hockey score guy? Come on, go ahead. I left my phone over there. Breaking news. The Knicks are finalizing a deal to send Marcus Morris to the Clippers for Moe Harkless. That's it?
Starting point is 01:52:27 And other assets. Well, the big question is Landry Shannon. I don't want to give up. I don't want to give a plan. That was the holdup. Boy, so the clippers are, I like Landry Shammit. That is shocking. I'm telling you.
Starting point is 01:52:41 Did you see what Landry Shamet did last night? I'm telling you. No, he's a good young player. He's a good young player. He scores well. He shoots it well. He can't defend his position. Okay, let's get over defense.
Starting point is 01:52:51 But I have to tell you. They got a lot of guys who can defend. I have to tell you, this is a shocker. So I was told this morning that the clippers would not let go of Shamit. and the goal, particularly with Leon Rose, becoming the next president of the Knicks, Kuzma is a CAA client. I was literally told
Starting point is 01:53:12 they are trying to move Marcus Morris to get Kyle Kuzma. I fully expected the Marcus Morris. So the Clippers stepped right in front of them. Again. They jumped them. And I'll tell you what, man, that changes the dynamic.
Starting point is 01:53:25 I like the Lakers with Marcus Morris. I really like the Clippers with Marcus Morris. They needed to get deeper at the big positions so that when they play Yokic, they can put somebody that puts Yokic in a difficult position where he's got to guard them out of the three-point line. Marcus Morris can do that. He's strong enough to defend him for short minutes. Montrez is good enough for short minutes. Zubach can give you short minutes.
Starting point is 01:53:52 If this is accurate, if this is true, that is a great move for the clippers. Per Shams Sharanya. He's been accurate before. Yeah, I would look. He comes on my show. I know that they were talking to both the Lakers and the Clippers. You know what that sounds like? First of all, the Clippers really annoyed the Lakers the way they did the Kauai thing.
Starting point is 01:54:18 And so according to, okay, Goulet, pipe in here. What do you got? The Lakers basically pulled Kuzma out of any trade deal for Morris. Okay, so the Lakers think like I do. 26 minutes a night, 6-8, Jews can hit a three. You guys are all bailed. He's never been in the playoffs.
Starting point is 01:54:34 He's never been in the playoffs. He can't take him under his wing. You heard, you know what he said about LeBron James. Oh, who cares? LeBron's not secure enough to handle that. Are we going to look at LeBron's history about being secure when guys go with him?
Starting point is 01:54:51 Doug Gottlieb ripped me on my own show. Every time he comes on, I still like him. So what? You guys treat Coos. like he's 20s and 26 minute a night guy. This may come as a shock to you. Not to you guys, but to you, you are more secure than LeBron James. No, I can guarantee you that.
Starting point is 01:55:09 Well, I have a set of pipes here that is, you know, it's a standard in the industry. So you, but I just want to say this. Yeah. It does appear that the Lakers are listening to this show and listening to me because I've been pro Kuzma for two years and they've turned down nine offers. You guys are just throwing Kuzma like he has no value. This is where, I'm not throwing him away that he has no value. Just for where the Lakers want to go and they want to go right now, he's never been in the playoffs.
Starting point is 01:55:39 The one reason that I would go with you on this is I love the Lakers chemistry. I like what they have. I wouldn't mess with it. I think that that's an intangible that we don't give enough credit to. And so that would be the biggest reason for me to say, we're not moving coos. We're not moving Danny. We're not moving anybody. We like what we have.
Starting point is 01:56:01 We'll go to the wall with it. I hear this all the time. Well, I mean, Kuzma's never been in the playoffs. At some point, somebody gave Rick Buecker an NBA beat writer job. Yes. And they said, you know, Buker's never covered an NBA beat. And they trusted your talent to be good. Yes.
Starting point is 01:56:15 They put me on TV for the first time. And you never been on TV. They did it on Tuesdays on a tape delay. They didn't immediately have me cover. covering the NBA finals. You've got to get your feet wet. Kyle Coosma has never even had his feet wet in the playoffs. By the way, you and your new crazy hair, none of these guys like you.
Starting point is 01:56:39 This show likes you. Joy and I are Coosma fans. Good. I'm not saying I'm not a Coosma fans. You guys treat him like a spare tire in a trunk. Yeah, he's never been in a playoff game. So what? A lot of young people haven't been there.
Starting point is 01:56:54 Let him get there and let's see it. But we're talking about him. him unless you're an Alex Caruso fan. He's fine. The third best player on a championship team. He's not. Danny Green will be the third guy you lean on. Kuzma's your four. Rick, sharks are born swimming.
Starting point is 01:57:11 Boom. Remember that. Boom. Okay. I don't even know what that means. Neither do I. So I'm not going to talk about this, but I'm going to say it. I don't care about it.
Starting point is 01:57:22 Cleveland's finalizing a trade for Andre Drummond of Detroit, who's talented, according to Woe, but you know, what's it matter? Sexton's a bus, by the way. I watched him two nights ago. He's a bust. So they're getting Andre Drummond, but they're not moving Tristan Thompson.
Starting point is 01:57:37 I thought they were going to. Well, there was talk about him going to the rockets, but that supposedly fell through. All right, that sharks, whatever she said. Sharks are born swimming. Let's go. Make it happen. Okay, so then Kyle Kuzma should have already been in the playoffs the first minute that he got into the NBA.
Starting point is 01:57:52 No, you're not based on that analogy. He's one the shark in jaw. He's a baby shark swimming around who's got the potential to bite you. Are you getting in a book with a baby shark? Now the baby shark, his theme is going to be in my head the rest of the day. Baby shark, you do that. Okay, that's enough from you. All right, Rick Buecker, awesome stuff.
Starting point is 01:58:12 Cavs finalizing a trade for Andre Drummond on the screen. Audience members will flee reading that fascinating trade. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific. on Fox Sports Radio, FS1, and the IHard Radio app. All right, Clippers got Marcus Morris. That's what it sounds like. He's one of the, you know, he's a funny guy. He kind of is a scrapper.
Starting point is 01:58:36 Like he's gotten in, you know, isn't he the LeBron guy, oh, is banging on LeBron? I can stop LeBron. So the Clippers go and get somebody who can stop LeBron. I'm surprised Utah didn't go after him because I love Utah, but they have nobody that can stop Coire LeBron. Marcus Morris, you throw him out there against LeBron for 24 minutes. He can be a pain in the butt.
Starting point is 01:58:52 Well, what's more interesting to me, me is that he was rumored to be going to the Lakers. That's who they were looking to make the move for for Coozma. Pulled the rug out. I'm telling you, this Clipper group, they're cutthroat. I love it. Be aggressive. But I also very much like that they're sticking with Coosma.
Starting point is 01:59:10 Yes. What is it with these NBA people? Even the guys I like, it's like, well, he hasn't proven yet. In life, how many millennials haven't proven their work? You've got to give people a chance. You got to, like, if you see talent, give people a chance before you trade them. I mean, not only does he have the talent, the idea that he hasn't been there before, you're surrounded by veterans who have won championships.
Starting point is 01:59:34 You're not asking Kuzma to be a one, a two, or a three. Go be our fourth best player. And she wants some young legs? No? Some. Gearing up for a pretty long playoff run. How about one pair? Guaranteed to make her smile.
Starting point is 01:59:47 Go to 1,800 Flowers.com. 18 STEM and Chanon Rose Medley, 2999. Double it to 36 stems for 20 bucks more. 1-800flowers.com code heard Joy Taylor with the news. No, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. Braden Moster was a big story going into the Super Bowl weekends.
Starting point is 02:00:08 He has a nice journey through the NFL, and it was a good story for the 49ers. Well, him and Damien Williams shared a nice moment. We're showing the video of it now after the Super Bowl, and they actually traded jerseys. But Moster is having second thoughts about keeping Williams' jersey. and he hopes he can return it. He posted a picture on Twitter saying,
Starting point is 02:00:26 contemplated putting this on eBay, the laughing emoji, but this belongs to you and yours. You did your thing. Hand this down for generations. Proud of you, bro. Much love. Hashtag undrafted running backs. A lot of people felt like Williams was really the MVP of the Super Bowl.
Starting point is 02:00:41 This is wonderful. You know what? We're in a time right now. There are so many good guys in pro sports right now. I said this the other day. Kyrie Irving's a little bit of a flake. Westbrook drives me mad. There's not a bad guy in the NBA.
Starting point is 02:00:57 Like, like, you look at the NFL right now. Have we ever had a time when, and again, I'm rough on Baker, but more fun, likable dudes? Like, that's such a classy move. It is. And I like that leagues are rewarding that as well. Not that, you know, when we're talking about guys, we don't really talking about them, you know, outside of their sport to begin with. Like, we're just analyzing what they do within their sport. So I don't really like saying, oh, he's a good guy or not a good guy.
Starting point is 02:01:26 But this is nice to see. It's classy. Yeah. And, you know, I think one part of it, too, like I was at NFL Honors and Calais Campbell won, like the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award. And it's really become a prestigious thing to win. Oh, there's no question. It's a big deal. Right.
Starting point is 02:01:40 It's something that guys really aspire to. And you have so many guys being aware of their influence and what they're doing outside of the sport and, you know, just good relationships too. And I think it's obviously easier to have relationships within sports now, too, with social media and the internet. But I thought this was nice. And also, yeah, he probably does want his Super Bowl jersey, even though it was cool to swap it. So the Chiefs fans braved the 20-degree temperatures yesterday to celebrate the Super Bowl win in Kansas City. Oh, Lord. Everyone was bundled up, but it was a scene.
Starting point is 02:02:11 And Travis Kelsey, Kelsey family, boy, they know how to give some speeches and some Super Bowl parades. Oh, here it comes. 21 years. y'all know what that means everybody here is thinking oh that's when i can you know what i mean legally get a drink yeah no 21 years that's how that's how long it's just been turning for my guy andy reed and turning and what we do what we do we unleash a can of whop ass on everybody 24 nothing I ain't trying to hear it
Starting point is 02:02:48 One last time For 2019, 2020 world Champions You gotta fight For your right Two things I love One I feel like once you get
Starting point is 02:03:04 The WWE belt The championship belt on You transform into like Another person Like another personality And I love when people feel like They have to shout into microphone Did you see Mahomes
Starting point is 02:03:16 behind him Yeah, I mean, it's great. Like, look at this. It's just happiness. I'm so happy for Kansas City. I'm so happy for Andy Reed and that whole team. They really, they were so fun to watch this year. They were fun to watch last year.
Starting point is 02:03:28 And this year was just, was even better. It couldn't have worked out better. Obviously, San Francisco had a great season. Nothing to be ashamed of. And Nick Wright. And Jason Whitlock are Kansasittians. Yes. So in our building, I've listened to Whitlock and Nick Wright be so severely
Starting point is 02:03:46 disappointed since I've known both. Right. This is a really, our building had a good buzz to it. No, it's a great moment. Great moment in sports. They're enjoying themselves and I'm happy for them. Finally, Tom Brady's anticipated free agency decision, much anticipated
Starting point is 02:04:01 has created some speculation. And Bill Belichick, according to Tom Curran, has said he would prefer to have Brady back in 2020 for the right price. But if it comes to a crossroads, he would be able to get his mind around saying goodbye, as well.
Starting point is 02:04:18 I don't know. I just like, if I'm in a situation with a company that I've given multiple pay cuts to, which by the way, will never happen. But if I did in 20 years of blood, sweat, and tears and brought six championships to you, I might prefer being, you know, referred to as something more than prefer. I would prefer to not hear prefer. Well, I think in that, and that is, I think, at the root of Tom Brady's angst in New England, just it would be nice one time for Bill to say I love you.
Starting point is 02:04:49 Just once, I love you, man. It feels like that. It feels like that relationship. Remember, what was it? Was it this year? Yeah, they gave the ball to him. It was so awkward and like, why is this so weird? And I don't think Belichick's being a jerk.
Starting point is 02:05:02 I just think this is who Belichick is. No, I don't think he's being a jerk either, but I do think that there comes a point where you must, you must give a little bit. And that's my knock on Bill. sometimes there's the politics of the room. Just say nice stuff, occasionally. I think with Tom...
Starting point is 02:05:20 I don't think Tom Brady is needy at all. Listen, it's not like Tom's a jerk. He's an easy guy to say nice stuff to. Tom's a nice guy. But also, I don't think that he's needy. I think he's shown throughout the years that he's not that guy that needs constant affirmation and you're the greatest and all this.
Starting point is 02:05:36 If he is, he certainly doesn't show that. He certainly hasn't proven that through the pay cuts that he's taken. He's been a humble superstar for the most part. throughout the years. Oh, God, yeah. So asking for a little bit of like, hey. Love. Little.
Starting point is 02:05:49 Can I get a little, like, a little heart at the bottom of the card or something? One of those things. Joy with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Heard Line News. All right, so just give you an update. NBA trading deadline wraps up here pretty quick.
Starting point is 02:06:04 So the Warriors have acquired Andrew Wiggins from Minnesota. He'll be their third best player. I think he's a very good fit. I think Andrew Wiggins works as a complimentary piece to the best back court in the NBA, Clay and Steph. I don't think asked to be the franchise face or the two in Minnesota works. I think he'll buy into the Golden State culture. They also got a good pick for it. I think DiAngelo Russell is probably a better fit in Minnesota.
Starting point is 02:06:35 Now, they won't play any defense. He doesn't. But he didn't work. We all knew it wouldn't work in Golden State. We knew it wouldn't work because he's a third guard and he's ball-centric. But I think he works in Minnesota. He's a very good score. You got your point.
Starting point is 02:06:48 You got your big. And I think he and Wiggins, Carl Anthony Town and DeAngelo Russell, are supposed to be best friends. So it works there. So this is the Warriors also got a couple of picks. The T. Wolves got a couple of players, bench guys. It works for both teams. The other news of note in the NBA, and we should mention this, Marcus Morris could be ending up going to the Clippers. he's kind of a talkative, verbal, sparring, tough guy.
Starting point is 02:07:15 He's a wing tough guy. He'll latch on to LeBron. And this is a hyper-aggressive Clipper organization. What are they going to give up for him? We'll wait and see. But Morris is another big body. You can throw on the wing, guard LeBron. I already feel like the clippers are the deepest team in the league.
Starting point is 02:07:34 Milwaukee second. I think if this is true, the clippers just got deeper, deeper and bigger. coming up tomorrow's headlines today I'm off tomorrow we bring Jason McIntyre in I can't wait he's got all sorts of fun headlines that is coming up one more herd the herd streams 24 hours a day seven days a week within the IHeart radio app search herd to listen live or on demand whenever you'd like all right Jason McIntyre we always do tomorrow's headlines today I'm off tomorrow gonna hang out with my kids skiing you know got to be a dad double black diamonds no no thanks No? I'm not coming back in bandages. I just do a little double blues, blues, hang out with my kids. My kids do blues and greens.
Starting point is 02:08:17 Well, I'm a big stupid kid. Have you told the story about our flight back from Miami yet? Did you wear the mask? He wore a mask. Listen, I'm telling you, I would say, Colin, at least 15 people are worried about the coronavirus. We're wearing masks on our flight back from Miami. I'm not joking. Did you wear the mask I gave you?
Starting point is 02:08:33 I kept a mask you gave me. Joy, did you wear one? Listen, Jason, no. Okay. This is no joke. I'm flying in a few hours. I also won't be wearing a mask. Put on a mask, Joy.
Starting point is 02:08:44 Hey, better than plane. Yeah, I was masked up. Cowher starts laughing at me. I'm like, the way he's saying it right now, he's trying, not laughing at you. We are mutually laughing at you.
Starting point is 02:08:53 I had my dad go in Fort Lauderdale. He's watching right now. He went to Home Depot sold out. CVS sold out. I know. I mean, take the murder. See and wash your hands.
Starting point is 02:09:03 Okay. All right. Wash your hands. Sure. That's enough. Turn the vent on so you get filtered air. Dr. Colin Cowherd checking in with flight strategy. I would give anything to see McIntyre walking on the plane.
Starting point is 02:09:14 I put it on my Instagram, Joy. How did you not see that? Big, big, big NBA trade deadline. Okay, first of all, Marcus Morris could go to the Clippers. Very interesting. I don't, I'm not a huge fan of Marcus Morris. It's a savvy move by the Clippers, but if you do his history, he was in Detroit, talked trash, called himself the LeBron Stopper.
Starting point is 02:09:31 Then he goes to Boston. I can shut down LeBron. This is a guy who has a checkered history everywhere he goes. He was with the Phoenix Suns, got in fights. there's a great story when he was a Kansas Jayhawk basketball player, him and his twin brother tried to fight the football team. Like there's, this guy is a little
Starting point is 02:09:47 he's got to screw loose as they say and if you're Kauai Leonard and Paul George, you want him on your team defending LeBron. This is advantage clippers for the moment. I think that's a huge move. And by the way, Wiggins goes to the Warriors and DeAngelo to the T-Wels. Do you think this Wiggins
Starting point is 02:10:03 move is they're trying to duplicate what they originally had, Wiggins in the Harrison Barnes role, right? Draymond Green and then Kevin Lune or whoever met. You lost Kevin Durant. He's a talented player on the market. And you don't need another guard. I like what the Warriors did. By the way, Andrew Wiggins
Starting point is 02:10:18 averages 22 a night. He's not a stiff. He can play. Healthy next year, they're right there with the Lakers and Clippers. Thank you. 100%. Warriors are back. Okay. Tomorrow's headlines today, where will Tom Brady play in 2020? Well, I saw you
Starting point is 02:10:34 were hot for the Cowboys this week. Understandable. But it's also Oscar weekend. Is it not coming? Yes. The headline for Tom Brady will be once upon a Tom in Hollywood. Yes. I'm still on the Brady to the Chargers bandwagon. You are.
Starting point is 02:10:51 Let me just reiterate. 2018, they're 12 and 4. Last year they struggled, but they were two and nine in one score games. If you look historically, one score games will flip year to year. That's true. With rivers, according to Jay Glazer, dusted with the Chargers, they really don't have a backup they trust. I believe Tom Brady makes all the sense in the world.
Starting point is 02:11:11 My one concern about this is, hey, you want to play in the division with the Chiefs who just won the Super Bowl, Tom? You go from beating up on the bills and the jets and the dolphins to now facing Pat Mahomes twice in the season. It should be noted that Chargers were swept by the Raiders, Broncos and Chiefs last year. But I think Tom Brady, with the weapons they have,
Starting point is 02:11:30 Keenan Allen, Mike Williams, Hunter Henry, I think Brady of the Chargers is still my pick. All right. Tomorrow's headlines today, what will happen to Tua at the NFL draft. So as you know, a lot of NFL people in Miami for the Super Bowl. Tons. I mean, I met some very friendly people.
Starting point is 02:11:47 Shout out to a lot of the folks I met there. And I keep hearing Tua Tungavalo and not great things. I don't know if you're hearing the same. The headline will be. Tua takes a tumble in the draft. Colin, someone smarter than me noted, Jason, look at the history of Josh Rosen at UCLA. Carson Wentz, North Dakota State,
Starting point is 02:12:09 Sam Bradford at Oklahoma. These guys were hurt in college, multiple injuries. What happened in the NFL? All these guys keep getting hurt. Now, there's not a direct correlation that Tua is going to keep getting hurt, but Colin, this is a couple big injuries he suffered. And I think if you're an NFL team,
Starting point is 02:12:24 you have to wonder, do I, if I'm the Dolphins, do I want to go Tua, or do I say Justin Herbert, who's a much bigger, stronger quarterback built for the league? I've got some concerns that Tua falls in the draft. Listen, I just talked to somebody recently. Jacob Easton at Washington, there's now some momentum. Herbert. Jordan Love is the other guy.
Starting point is 02:12:45 He got to watch him. Utah State. So it's not lacking depth. And we also know because of the college concept and the pros, most of these kids now work. Yeah. This is not a coin flip anymore. It looks like about 90% of these college kids, if you get them the right coach. I mean, we all knock Trubisky.
Starting point is 02:13:00 He's 19 and 10 the last two years. I'm not saying I'm out on Tua. I just think teams, it sounds like they're going to be concerned. And my guy, Bucky Brooks, who's here in the studio, he's been hyping Jordan Love for a while. He's on that bandwagon. I don't know if Jordan Love passes Tua, but I'm almost certain, as of right now, Justin Herbert will. Tomorrow's headlines today. What's the Nix plan after hiring Agent Leon Rose?
Starting point is 02:13:23 Yeah, they hired William Wesley, who's been in a lot of rap songs. They love him in, you know, Worldwide West. That's him. The headline for my Nix will be NICS final. Finally land LeBron James Jr. in the 2022 draft. Obviously, listen, LeBron's first agent, I believe, was Leon Rose. And, you know, they hire World Wide West, who's friendly with LeBron, a lot of other players. LeBron's son is now a freshman in high school.
Starting point is 02:13:49 Yeah. And they're going to be changing the draft. High school players will be eligible. If he reclassifies as a junior, LeBron James Jr. will be eligible in 2020. Oh, he'll be the number one pick. And we know LeBron's going to be what? He's going to be 37, 38 around that time. He's going to want to end up playing with his son.
Starting point is 02:14:07 I do believe that will be the first time in NBA history that that happens. Father's son. I think it makes sense for the Knicks. You know, listen, they haven't gotten anybody. LeBron, Bronny. Come on, Colin, you're on board with this. I think it's fine. Yeah, I know Knicks fans are going to love me for this one.
Starting point is 02:14:21 No, I think it's kind of interesting. And by the way, I don't watch a lot of, that's Bronny Jr. I don't watch a lot. No, but he is a really talented kid. Oh, my goodness. Yeah, ridiculously talented. Yeah. He got good DNA.
Starting point is 02:14:34 That's pretty good. All right, tomorrow's headlines today. Who will win Best Picture at the Oscars? I don't know if you've seen all the movies. Have you seen Joker? Yes, and you know what else I saw flying to the Super Bowl? Hustlers. No.
Starting point is 02:14:50 I saw that. Parasite. I loved Parasite. I loved Parasite. Okay. Well, let's get to the headline. And the headline will be the winner for best. The winner for Best Picture is Parasite.
Starting point is 02:15:04 I mean, this movie is phenomenal. Did you watch it? I've seen it. I've a friend who got one of those screeners and gave it to us. This movie is so creative and different. I've never seen anything like it. First 15 minutes in, maybe 20 minutes, I sat there on the plane and I thought, what? Somebody was high that made this movie.
Starting point is 02:15:21 Where did you get this idea for a movie? So creative. It's so clever. We're in an era in Hollywood right now where everything's a remake and they're doing all the superhero movies. I thought Joker was creative and awesome, but Parasite is a whole different ball of wax. I mean, it is an incredible movie. It does have
Starting point is 02:15:38 subtitles, which isn't going to be for all your fans. But again, I think this movie's got to win best picture. It was tremendous. Joker's about a great performance. It's a little dark and depressing. It's very dark. But it's a great performance. Sometimes you have a great performance, not a great movie. Joker to me was a great performance, not a great movie. Joker ended and everybody
Starting point is 02:15:54 just files out of the theater. No buzz, no idea. People are like, geez, what the heck did I just watch? Joy, what was your favorite movie? I haven't seen all of them so I can't really I can't really give a fair but I do agree with Joker with your assessment of Joker though
Starting point is 02:16:06 I think that he will win best actor but it was a great performance not my favorite movie where are you on those really dark movies where it's like the dark humor and really I mean there's some grisly stuff
Starting point is 02:16:16 in that movie there's about two good movies a year that I have to go see I still have to see Mr. Rogers let's go back to the NBA trade stuff put it on the screen so today is the NBA trade deadline we were going to do a segment today
Starting point is 02:16:25 and I put the kibosh to it because it was crazy but we were talking about trades we'd like to see happen. Let's be honest about that. I was saying this earlier today. I don't like missing on a guy if I was an executive. Oh, boy. But I would rather miss on a guy because there's usually another guy coming out.
Starting point is 02:16:42 Yes. What you don't want to do in a salary cap league like the NBA is sign a guy and you're trapped. What are the Houston Rockets today? Oh, man. Westbrook's going to cost you 41.5 average next four years. And he can't, so the game is moving away from him. he is last in three-point shooting in the league. So it's funny.
Starting point is 02:17:01 So now they move off Clint Capella, who they have no size. There's PJ Tucker retweeted. He's their center now. He's going to have to guard Anthony Davis for 30 minutes. And PJ Tucker went on, was it Twitter or Instagram, Instagram and retweeted,
Starting point is 02:17:17 somebody sent a picture of PJ Tucker as a center where he had leg extensions. And that's what are they now? The Rockets got better to match up with the Clippers who are a wing team. They don't really have a center. They are a horrible matchup for the Lakers. We might see that Saturday night.
Starting point is 02:17:32 But if they place the Lakers in the first round, it could be a sweet. That's how bad the matchup is for the Rockets. But against the clippers, I think they're going to have a chance. They got the wings. And the clippers don't really have a center. Well, they have Montres Harold. He's like a 6-8 center. He's like PJ Tucker with, you know, platform.
Starting point is 02:17:50 You don't need a – you know, here's the thing is. Colline Leonard shut down Janus. You don't – a center. is you need a rim protector. I mean, by the way, Embed is not going to get to the conference finals. Gobert's not going to get to the finals.
Starting point is 02:18:06 Janus will. Carl Anthony Towns is certain about Janus? I think Milwaukee's going to fly. Joyce Miami, he just got a lot better. And I like those Boston Celtics a lot. I don't know about Janus. Do you trust the Milwaukee Bucks? You have to build this segment this week.
Starting point is 02:18:21 Next week. Do you trust the Milwaukee bucks in the playoffs with Janus and a bunch of guys? Because they've done baby stats. First of all, good coach, deep roster, star player. Chris Middleton should be a three, not a two. They don't win the championship. But so first of all, they were good, but never got to the playoffs.
Starting point is 02:18:36 Then they were good and got into the playoffs. And they were good and couldn't do anything in the playoffs. Last year they were good and got to the conference finals. This year, Baby Steps. Like Golden State took years, right? They took a couple. Yes. So now they go, they win the Eastern Conference, they get to the finals, they lose to the Clippers,
Starting point is 02:18:52 and then my guess is the following year they win it. But do they have the Baby Step time? with Janice's window of free agency rapidly approached. He's not going anywhere now. Okay. All right, M Drive is packed with ingredients to boost, healthy testosterone, and so much more. Go to MDrive for men. The Code has heard 20% off.
