The Herd with Colin Cowherd - Ross & Rizzo Unfiltered - Yankees SLOPPY loss to Rays, White Sox KEEP ROLLING vs. Guardians

Episode Date: October 6, 2026

David Ross and Anthony Rizzo are BACK with Episode 16 of Ross & Rizzo Unfiltered where the guys REACT to the Tampa Bay Rays beating the New York Yankees to take a 2-0 lead in the ALDS. The guys di...scuss the SLOPPY defense as the Yanks made 4 errors, and more mental mistakes, as well as their lack of hitting this series. The Yankees have 5 hits in the first two games, and the guys debate whether it’s too late for the Yankees to turn it on and make a comeback. The guys react to the Chicago White Sox taking a 2-0 lead on the Cleveland Guardians as manager Will Venable continues to press all the right buttons as his double-opener strategy ended with starter Sean Burke taking the ball in the 3rd, and shutting down the Guardians lineup before handing the ball off to closer Grant Taylor. The guys talk about how INSANE the atmosphere will be back in Chicago as they will get their first home game of the 2026 playoffs. Finally, the guys answer fan mailbag questions about all things baseball, from how the Yankees continue to lose in the same ways, to the implementation to Pitch Com, to the offensive production of Dansby Swanson and Michael Busch for the Chicago Cubs.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Listen to Who's With Me with Debbie Kmartbell on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. How many times this season do you think the New York Yankees,
Starting point is 00:02:42 how many times have they rolled out in all left-handed lineup during the regular season? Probably not much. Ten? One. Wow. One time. So let's do that three times in a row in the playoffs, right? That's what we talked about.
Starting point is 00:02:54 We're trying to create things when that's not the way this team got here. The team got here by rolling out your lineups, right? And now we're trying to trick-fuck the system. Let's go all lefties. raise throw a massive amount of change up. So I was pretty surprised seeing the all left-handed lineup again. Welcome back to another episode of Ross and Rizzo Unfiltered. I'm Anthony Rizzo with my Patna.
Starting point is 00:03:20 David Ross, game two of the American League Division series is in the books. The White Sox beating the Guardians 4 to 3 and the Yankees losing to the raise 5 to 2. Rossi, what the fuck do we? just watching that Yankee game. I knew you were going to be on one tonight, man. They did not start clean. I mean, we've talked about it on here a ton already. Like clean baseball is playoff baseball.
Starting point is 00:03:48 But your boy, Cam Schlittler, like, picked him up, like, only allowed him one with all that chaos in the first inning, all that speed, the defense not helping him behind. Jazz, the crazy throw, you know, just he had to pitch out of some traffic early. him a lot of mistakes behind him, but he kind of takes the ball, puts him on his back, and keeps it a one-run game. I thought that was huge for them to stay in the game. No doubt. And say what you want. Cam, right, maybe didn't have his best stuff. But for what the circumstances he dealt with, like, he was nasty. The fact that he kept them in the game and the fact that that was a one-one ball game in the fourth inning was, I mean, credit to him and how,
Starting point is 00:04:34 I mean, this is his second year in the big leagues. And all the adversity he just had to deal with. None of that was, you know, by his doing. And he just kept going, kept pitching. Maybe he wasn't as sharp, but it was impossible for him to settle in. Every single inning was high stress for him. Yeah. And credit to the raise hitters, they were swinging early.
Starting point is 00:04:55 They jumped on all those mistakes behind him. I think he only threw like 20 in the first, 20 in the second or 21 in the second. Like they put the ball in play. I think, you know, you're talking about the American League Cy Young winner, if we're being honest, right? Cam. No doubt. And these guys had quality of bats, hit the ball hard, a couple of homers, a couple balls hit the top of the wall, almost homers. Like, they're that good. And, you know, the mistakes behind him didn't help him in those high stress pitches.
Starting point is 00:05:25 But I thought a lot of credit had to go to the raise, hard hit balls, and they were swinging early. They make contact. They're going to put the ball in play. They make you throw strikes. And I thought he had good stuff. He wasn't able to get into anything, set anybody up. They were on him early. And just, I think it's a little bit, maybe he wasn't quite as sharp, if you want to say that.
Starting point is 00:05:47 But I just thought a lot of credit had to go to the race hitters and just how good they are, especially in their home ballpark. The least amount of strikeouts in a start this year from Cam, the probably unanimous Cy Young Award went in the American League. That's how good this raised lineup is. He only struck out two hitters, right? And this stuff is nasty. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:06:07 So they did put a lot of pressure on them. The Yankees, man, they arguably gave the raise five or six extra outs. And as frustrating as that is, as a Yankee fan, if you're a Yankee fan, it doesn't matter. No one hit, right? Yeah. Ben Rice, two home runs, Austin Wells, and Bellinger. Yeah. They have five hits and two games.
Starting point is 00:06:33 Awesome, well, still swinging well. Yeah, five hits and two games. You're not going to win a lot of ball games like that unless they're going in the seats. You're not going to win any ball games like that. Right, you're right. I guess unless they're going in the seats. But, I mean, Ben Rice still, like you said,
Starting point is 00:06:46 Ben Rice two home runs, but nobody's on bait. Like, just the rest of the lineup. Booney's going to have to mix something up. You know, I don't know what that looks like, but something's got to change. I played on the Yankees, right? How many times this season do you think the New York Yankee And Aaron, now, granted, Aaron Judge was hurt most of the year, and so was John Carlos Stanton.
Starting point is 00:07:11 So they were a very left-handed, dominant lineup. How many times have they rolled out in all left-handed lineup during the regular season? Probably not much. Probably. What would your guess be? I would guess 10. One. Wow.
Starting point is 00:07:29 One time. So let's do that three times in a row in the playoffs, right? That's what we talked about. That's just try to. exactly we talked about this we're trying to create things when that's not the way this team got here the team got here by rolling out your lineups right and now we're trying to trick fuck the system let's go all lefties the rays throw a massive amount of change up so i was pretty surprised seeing the all left-handed lineup again and then later on in the game the lefty was in there and they weren't pinch hitting anyone yeah i was like why have all these guys on the bench i don't i was just i was fussed traded watching. It's Rasterson threw career high
Starting point is 00:08:11 in changeups in game one, right? Yeah. That tells you all you need to know and how they're going to attack these left-handed hitters. That tells you. Well, and we talked about it too. When a pitcher has a feel for certain locations and pitches, you know,
Starting point is 00:08:25 and you face the same sided hitter all the time. It just makes it easier on them when they don't have to go back and forth. Even if the righty gets out for time, he has to change. Usually you get a walk there because he doesn't have the release point and the visual. Yeah, there's a lot to be said about that. And they're not built on platoony. You know, they went out and made some moves and tried to fill some holes because
Starting point is 00:08:48 John Carlo and judges out. But it's, you know, they're trying to make shift and I get where he's thinking. But, you know, now it's time to just get the best bats in there. Like I'm riding with Goldie. Goldie maybe makes some play. Again, his defense alone probably would have saved you an error or two tonight. Yeah, and I know fans are frustrated with Jazz. That play with infield in, they were playing three depth.
Starting point is 00:09:14 It seemed like it's not a contact play. Arronda just made a great read. It was a perfectly chopped ball on that turf to where I thought Jazz made the right play by going to first. Obviously in the first inning, he rushed that ball. Well, and Boone put him at that depth because rarely, in the first, I think the raise, and this is a conversation I had when I was managing, talking to some other coaches. We were talking about the debate between going on contact with nobody out, second, third, infield in. And a lot of people don't.
Starting point is 00:09:50 They let the ball go through. And I think they were telling me, I don't quote me on this, but I think the raise always go contact because of some kind of stat that they have where like putting pressure on the defense. in the numbers behind it. I don't, I don't, I, I didn't look like he was going. No, he did. He had a nice read, but I know they do put pressure on. The next ball, they definitely were going on contact with one out. You could see an immediate break from, I think it was Caminero down there,
Starting point is 00:10:20 had a great jump on the next ball in the infield. But yeah, man, you know, I think that's one of the hardest plays in baseball coming from catching infield in and the execution of field. it and throwing a clean handable ball to the catcher. And him not blocking the plate, catching it and tagging the runner going full speed is a really tough play. So, you know, the race put pressure on you and that's what they do. They're very similar to the Brewers.
Starting point is 00:10:50 And since they just put constant pressure on you with contact. Yes, that are the two best teams, right? I mean, two best teams in the league and the American League and the National League. So those are your two picks. I sneaky love their just style of baseball, man. It's like just like the old school, like put the ball in play, Bonn, hit and run, just doing, doing, putting, stealing bases, putting pressure on. I just love that style of baseball because they are school nationally.
Starting point is 00:11:16 Let's, I mean, let's talk about how good the rays are, right? They, they showed a stat during the game that their rays have forced 144 errors on opposing teams, fourth in the league. So I'd be interesting to see the top three, right? I'm sure the brewers are up there. White Soxed may be up there with how pesky they are. So it's constant pressure. It's foot on the gas.
Starting point is 00:11:42 It's, you know, at all times. And these guys, man, they're just, they're a great team. Kevin Cash pulls all those right strings.
Starting point is 00:11:51 He pulls, um, Peralta today with, what do you have, like 60 pitches. Yeah. And brings in the left. He goes three plus.
Starting point is 00:12:01 You know what I mean? Like, They're just, they're good, they're deep. Brian Baker is a shutdown closer that's just not getting love. And the deeper they go in the playoffs, the more love he's going to get for how good he's been this year. Yeah. This is a good baseball team.
Starting point is 00:12:16 And the Yankees now- See more, see more nine consecutive outs. Or nine, got nine outs out of the pen, like huge until he gave up that homer to Ben Rice. Like, he was absolutely carving. And Richie Palacios has got to give him some love. I want to go through that inning. We got first and third, two outs, right? And then they steal that backdoor base, kind of a freebie.
Starting point is 00:12:36 Wells gives a full arm fake. You're like, okay, we're just going to bank on the lefty, lefty match. But that's an underrated stolen base there that probably won't get talked about too much. Now we got second, third. He works a three O count, nice and comfortable. And then comes out of his shoes, 3O, the green light, 3-1, fouling off pitches, Falunoff pitches, works. It gets it back to 3-2 and you're like, oh, man, he's going to give up this at bad here.
Starting point is 00:13:01 excuse me and a 3-2 base hit line drive up the middle they scored two and it fell out of reach then in a in a you know 5-1 game at that point but um graded back from pelasios and staying up the middle huge hit and the rays just keep keep coming man they're just relentless it feels like they don't take one pitch off when they're in the box it's really impressive and their pitching is elite no doubt They'll have Nick Martinez going in the Bronx for game three versus Max Fried. There's something about the warm summer air and a cold corona with lime that makes the roar of the crowd sound a lot like the roar of the waves. That's because this is our playa and the best seats are always wherever you're sitting. Whether it's a weeknight game under the lights or a Sunday afternoon in the sun.
Starting point is 00:13:48 You know baseball isn't about rushing around. It's about settling in letting the game come to you. And nothing pairs better than a nice cold corona. Nothing. So find your seat, your Corona, and your lime. Because real fans know, the only thing better than nine innings is extra innings, especially on La Playa. Corona.
Starting point is 00:14:11 La Playa awaits. The official servesa of Major League Baseball. Get yours at order Corona.com for 21 plus, relax responsibly. Corona extra beer imported by Crown Imports, Chicago, Illinois. What's up, guys? I need to tell you about this. this new prediction market called Polymarket. It's the best new way to trade in sports.
Starting point is 00:14:32 In the past, if you wanted action on the game, you put some money in, and if your team was doing well, and you wanted to cash out, they'd lock the trade and take a huge fee. But Polymarket is a prediction market. It's a stock exchange for sports, buying in and selling out on your terms. I've tried them all, and Polymarket is simply the best prediction market, better than Draft Kings, Fandul, Kalshi, you name it. They're so confident you'll never go back to the other guys. guys, they're giving you a free $25 on your first trade when you deposit just $10.
Starting point is 00:15:01 And now they've launched a new feature, squads, a group chat where you can see what everyone is trading. So download the Polymarket app today and use the code Ross Rizzo when you sign up. That's code Ross Rizzo and get $25 free after you deposit just $10. The Yankees, they have to score runs. At the end of the day, we can break down their defense all they want. But if they don't score runs, it's impossible, right? Yankee Stadium hopefully will be a different story for them
Starting point is 00:15:30 and for the raise hopefully they keep the foot on the pedal. One player that is going crazy scoring runs. One playa. Playa doing it, putting in his old hands is our playa of the week. Shout out Corona. Ben Rice, man. One of the lone bright spots right now on that Yankee offense. Two home runs, another two home runs tonight. four total in the playoffs, four games, four homers.
Starting point is 00:15:59 That's pretty good, I would say. Seven hits, four home runs, eight RBIs and three walks. He's locked, bro. So him stepping up in Judge's absence and Stanton's absence is something that Yankees fan should be really excited for. Obviously, right now it's hard to be excited for anything as Yankee fan. But Ben Rice, what you're doing in October versus your division rivals, nonetheless, is a statement. Shout out.
Starting point is 00:16:26 Playa of the week, Ben Rice. He's carrying him right now. They're the only offensive presence they really had, him and Wells. Exactly. So I don't think this series is over. They just got to win one game. Obviously, Rossi, we've come back from worse. Yeah, right.
Starting point is 00:16:43 That's right. That we have. One at a time. One at a time is right. And same thing goes for the Cleveland Guardians. One at a time because the Chicago White's Sox making another statement, bro, Will Venable, going with the opener, doesn't work out, brings in his second opener, Sean Newcomb, makes a pretty costly error in the first inning,
Starting point is 00:17:10 right, to give the guardian players momentum and that fan, that stadium was going crazy to take a 2-0 lead. First time this playoffs where the White Sox got punched in the face where their opener didn't work out right away, Rossi. No, it felt like when you're watching the game, like, okay, here come the Indians, we're going to have a tie series, right? Like the momentum early on. Guardians. Yes, I can't help. They're the Indians when we were playing.
Starting point is 00:17:37 I can't help it. I'm sorry. I'm sorry, MLB. Don't, don't at me. Yeah, the Guardians, man. It felt like they were just, you know, finally the momentum. Okay, here comes their offense. They got a little bit things going their way.
Starting point is 00:17:50 You know, Anthony Kay, the first time the opener really didn't work for, like you said, for Will Vinnable and man, they look like things were going to go well. And they got their stud horse on the mound, striking out 11. And his is, I mean, David Williams, man. Bro, these guys, it's like, everyone talks about Jacob Mizorowski, Paul Skeens. Bro, all of these pitchers, man, are just absolutely elite. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:18:19 I mean, 101 with that nasty hammer. That was a hammer. that freaking spiked that spiked curb ball bro like that thing's nasty just falling off the table and like the ball looks like it jumps up in the in the zone too is like just real four seam carry man it's unbelievable unbelievable his stuff was nasty nasty and for the white socks their magic is their magic and i feel like that the guy who creates most of that spark is murray comma and he gets it going with the rb i singe on the top of the fourth right and then they take the lead on the Brandon Montgomery 2 RBI double, so they're winning 3-2.
Starting point is 00:18:59 And then after the two openers, Will Venable brings in his ace, Sean Burke, right? I haven't seen the two-opener strategy, Rossi. I've seen the one opener going to your bulk guy or your pitcher, but the two-opener strategy, I kind of like it. Burke was nasty, man. 13 straight, retired all the way to the 8th, like absolutely electric stuff. What a performance by him when he needed it. It was unbelievable.
Starting point is 00:19:28 And we got to give a shout out. Braden Montgomery, okay? Second year in the show, a young man just figuring things out from the right side. His two run double, three two count. He's his OPS against lefties, four 30. That's not good. Not good. You were better than that.
Starting point is 00:19:46 It was better than that, which is not saying much. But the fact, like, just continued to have the at-bats, huge double-double down the right field line, great piece of hitting. Like, that felt like, okay, here comes, here comes the, uh, the white socks and their magic, man, they can hit. They, they, they control the zone. They take their, I think, they got heard a stat. I didn't know that.
Starting point is 00:20:05 I think they led MLB in walks this year. Like they, they, they can, for a young group, like, they hack hit homers, but they also control the strike zone and make you fill it up. So, uh, huge at bat there by Brady Montgomery. That was, that was really, really cool. And, uh, Sean Burke, man, like that backdoor little cutter thing. he likes to get ahead of. Like, it's almost a free strike.
Starting point is 00:20:26 He had that thing locked in today, the break of ball, the four seamers up. Just unbelievable. Unbelievable. He allowed one hit, Sean Burke, right? Rossi, what do you got on the, like, you bring in your just top bullpen arms in the first and second?
Starting point is 00:20:44 Then you ride your starter until the eighth. I mean, obviously that's a perfect formula, but I kind of like the double opener. The music you love. Your favorite radio stations Everywhere you go The podcasts everyone's talking about All in one place

Listen out of character from Will Ferrell's Big Money Players Network on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Pods, or wherever you get your podcasts. The WNBA playoffs are about to begin. The talent is insane and the personalities are giving main character energy. And of course, the fans love it. But 30 years ago, when the league first started, it was a different story. I remember sitting with a couple of male writers all whining about,
Starting point is 00:22:49 oh, what are they going to do if they break a nail? No, no one's going to show up. But from the very beginning, there were two teams that captured everyone's attention. The Comets were the real deal. I mean, come on. The Liberty never gave up. They never stopped fighting. I knew that rivalry was going to be amazing from the beginning.
Starting point is 00:23:06 I'm Kerry Champion, and this is biggest rivalries of all time, season two. The New York Liberty versus the Houston Comments, the very first rivalry of the WNBA. They picked us to finish last, and they picked them to finish first. That's all you need to know. I remember looking around thinking this is going to change things. Basketball was going to have this fundamental impact on the way people viewed women athletes. Listen to biggest rivalries of all time on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. Is there bad blood between you in the comments as you guys meet again in the championship?
Starting point is 00:23:44 Oh, we're coming back to win. The WNBA playoffs are here. the games will be spread across seven different channels and streaming services, you only need one podcast to keep up to date on all the action. Good Game with Sarah Spain is the only daily podcast for all your WNBA needs. Be the smartest fan at the sports bar by learning all the W-Stories, stake stats, and stars, and hear from top players and coaches about their pregame routines, the pressure of playoff basketball, and the moments that define legacies.
Starting point is 00:24:18 Can we actually compete for a championship? And I think the answer is yes. You know, the best part about stuff, buts is parents have come up to me. Thank you. You helped my relationship with my daughter so much. It goes a lot further than you would think. Every time you underestimate a Yukon player comes at your own peril. You know, when you talk about women's sports, it's like prego spaghetti sauce.
Starting point is 00:24:38 It's in there. You know that commercial? Like, it's in there. You name it. It's in there. Want to know what's really going on in the WNBA? We got you. Listen to good game with Sarah Spain on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:24:51 and then go into your bulk, right? Yeah, they must have had somebody that they liked him facing, right? Or like try to map it out and just kind of work in the strategy backwards. The opener is one thing, but maybe just getting into, you know, a couple innings in or I don't know what his actual thought process is or like how they map that thing out. And maybe, you know, maybe Will is giving it a little bit of credit just watching the game. And Burke looks so good. and he's like, this guy's nasty.
Starting point is 00:25:22 He's retiring everybody. Like we said, 13 straight. So nobody's reaching base. I'm not getting anybody. I'm not getting anybody up. I'm not getting anybody hot. So credit them for, you know, not having it so scripted and kind of watching, you with your experience and knowing the guys and how they're handling the moment.
Starting point is 00:25:40 It's really impressive. Bro, you just said experience what these White Sox players are gaining right now and these games and these moments, the experience that they're going to be able to take with them for the rest of their careers. However, the rest of this playoff shakes out. This experience for them is it's it's jump starting their careers even more, right? Such, such young talent, such young players getting to experience this playoff atmosphere. I mean, you saw the Yankees today. They made the errors in the first inning. They just could not rebound. The guardians get punched in the face, or I'm sorry, the White Sox get punched in the face in the first inning. Two run. It's a two-run error.
Starting point is 00:26:18 That's tough on the road. And then. they just bounce back and they win the ball game. They find a way to win. And you know how when that crowd gets going on the road in a playoff atmosphere, it feels like you've got a real uphill battle. You know who I love for the White Sox? Chase's my draw.
Starting point is 00:26:34 I can't say enough good things about him, but huge base hit, taking it to four to two, you know, kind of putting it a little bit breathing room there for the White Sox, but like he's got some grit to him, man. Just like Edge, it looks like he's just, yeah. The whole
Starting point is 00:26:50 team, bro. It's fun. And then, and then, Rossi, Grant Taylor comes in after his heroics in game one, right? Will Venable random, four innings, 40 plus pitches, comes in and locks down the save, goes an inning in the third.
Starting point is 00:27:06 Yeah, yeah, right? Like, this dude's arm's going to fall off. We'll figure that out later. He's young. He can recover. They have an off day. They're going back to guaranteed rate field to Chicago, but... He gave up some hard hit. The balls they were out, but he gave up a little bit of hard hit That would be a red flag.
Starting point is 00:27:21 I'm glad he gets an off day tomorrow. That's for sure. No doubt. I mean, the whole team gets to reset now tomorrow. And now there's blood in the water for these White Sox. They're going home to guaranteed rate field. I still call it Kamiski, right? In the south side of Chicago where these fans are buzzing.
Starting point is 00:27:41 I mean, it's going to be loud there. Those fans are rowdy. We know playing in that Cubs White Sox rivalry that those fans are relentless there on the south side. So bro, how about how about that the Joe Adele almost tied that thing up, that ball that hit off the top of the wall? I was like, he hit it. And I'm like, he's got some sick juice. But you know what? He doesn't have the juice like daddy.
Starting point is 00:28:04 Some of us go deep there, Joe. So let's go deep there. I had to get that in. I had to get that. No, that was like, I was like, he hit that. And I saw the outfielder turn and look up. I'm like, oh, we got a tie ball game. Hits off the top, makes it four three.
Starting point is 00:28:18 And then they, uh, they shut it down. So what a, that was a great game. Rossi, I'm going to be in Chicago on Wednesday, and I'm heavily debating going to the game. Listen, I said this all the time, and I stand by it. When we won the World Series in 2016, if you're a White Sox fan and you couldn't have a little bit of, like, love for that Cubs team, I always said you're just a miserable fucking person, right? I like that. Because of the drought, and it's the same thing. city of Chicago and you want the city of Chicago
Starting point is 00:28:52 to do well. So now being on the other end of it, if you're a Cubs fan and you can't be rooting, this White Sox team is a very likable team. Yeah. They've come out of nowhere. They've gone through hell the last few years, losing a record amount of games, back-to-back, 100 lost seasons.
Starting point is 00:29:09 They're just a fun team to root for. Murray-Cama is so much fun. This whole team, Will Venable is doing an amazing job as a manager. So I am debating on going to the game. One of my best friends is a diehard white Sox fan, and he has a white Sox jersey. Morgan? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:29:27 My boy, shout out Morgan. He has a White Sox jersey. I call him the mayor with Rizzo 44 on the back, right? So he would come to Cubs games wearing his white socks jersey with my name on the back. That's sick. That's awesome. That's awesome. I didn't know that.
Starting point is 00:29:39 That's nice. Yeah. He's got to be on Cloud 9 right now. Morgan, shout out Morgan. He's awesome. I just think it would be really cool to experience that atmosphere there in Chicago. No, Rossi,
Starting point is 00:29:51 what do you got? What's your, tell me who wins game three. All right. I got my predictions. What do we got?
Starting point is 00:29:55 My polymarket pick of the game, I'm going to tell you who I think is going to win game three in Chicago. And I, we've got the white socks are 54% to the yes
Starting point is 00:30:07 to complete the sweep. $100 get you 179. And the guardians are 46% to the yes. $100 to get you $207. And I'm about making money. That's what you said. I told you this. I told you.
Starting point is 00:30:20 you, I like making money. The Guardians cannot go out like this. I think it's going to be electric. It's going to be an amazing atmosphere in Chicago on the south side. But I feel like the Guardian's got to get one under the books. I'm secretly kind of rooting for the City of Chicago and the White Sox, but when he talks about money,
Starting point is 00:30:40 I got no friends. Scared money, don't make money. Polymarket, I'm going with the Guardians. Hey, let me ask you this. This is a wild take. would it be better? Say right now it's 2-0 and history says that these teams have a probably 95% chance of moving on, right? The odds are heavily stacked against the Guardian of the Yankees.
Starting point is 00:31:04 Would it be better for these teams to lose a game to get punched in the face before they lose their first game in the playoffs? Because you've seen teams get super hot through the playoffs and then that first time they get punches in the CS of the World Series. And I remember in 07, the Rockies, they swept their way through and then just got swept in the World Series. Good point. Good point. I mean... Obviously, you don't want to lose a game. Yeah, you don't want to lose a game, but...
Starting point is 00:31:28 On the media end, now, it's easy to talk about. Forget how hard it was to play, right? You can see where, like, the young guys overcome a little bit of adversity. I don't think that would affect them. But it's going to be a good environment, man. I can't wait to see what it looks like on the south side. Yeah, that's going to be fun. Fun to watch for the Yankee Stadium to see, you know,
Starting point is 00:31:52 Yankees don't get off the good start. Those fans are passionate in the Bronx. Yeah, but it's going to be loud. If they do get out to a good start, they will be loud. That it will be. That it will. Cannot wait. Let's get to our Tim Bus ball bag questions of the day.
Starting point is 00:32:07 Our daily mailbag, or me and Rossi, answer our fan questions. You can leave comments on our socials, on our YouTube channel. or email us at ross and Rizzo at gmail.com. This is our favorite part of the show where we get to answer your questions and bring you inside our brains. First one is an email from John, dejected Yankee fan here.
Starting point is 00:32:30 Oh, what a start. It seems as if the Yankees are repeating the same story as last year. Toronto put constant pressure on their defense to gain extra outs and obviously Tampa did tonight. With the amount of resources poured into these teams, how can they get beat the same way two years in a row? The message has always been postseason baseball is random, but it's not random when the same stuff happens year after year.
Starting point is 00:32:53 We'd love to hear your thoughts. Yeah, John, thanks for the email. I think what I would say is the hope for the Yankees is they played bad at the Trop all year long. Like their stats, the pitching is got, I think it's a two-run difference at the Trout than at home. They just, it's just not their place to play. And the raise are great at home. The raise are one of the best teams in baseball, best records at home,
Starting point is 00:33:19 tie with the Brewers. So the hope is it is that type of baseball there. Turf, slap it, you know, good at bats, trying to create pressure on that fast infield. As you saw tonight, some hops that just ate up Mayhew, who's an elite defender at third to start the whole game off. So the hope is that you get to Yankee Stadium, get to your home field, the home run comes in play a little bit,
Starting point is 00:33:45 more. You know, you can play your brand of baseball home behind your fans. But I think the real thing, the real thing that I put my manager hat on that stands out to me is a lot of these teams that can't afford the big boppers like the Yankees have, they went with contact and quality of it bad and controlling the strike zone. You talk about the White Sox who control the strike zone. The Milwaukee Brewers who put pressure on and put balls in play. That's a winning formula right now with the velocity and how good all these pitchers are. So some teams are a little bit behind, and I would say the Yankees may be,
Starting point is 00:34:20 their formula for success has always been, and I think they stick to, we're going to live and die by the Homer and the great pitching they have. Yeah, I mean, it's definitely frustrating. As a Yankee fan, I get it. It seems like, you know, the theme this year was the run-it-back Yankees.
Starting point is 00:34:35 And I think this team, this pitching is elite. The defense, this hasn't been the defense that they've been playing all year. They've been consistently better defensively. Today was one of those games, and it's just magnified because it's the playoffs. But at the end of the day, like I said, Rossi, they have to hit as a team. They can't rely on the long ball, which I know they do. But why everyone was so excited for this Yankee team coming into the series was how they beat the Red Sox.
Starting point is 00:35:02 They beat them on singles, single, single, single, good hitting and a few homers, right? Yeah. So I would say this. I would say this to John is that the race were better. better than them during the regular season. Maybe the raise are just a better team. I'm going to throw that out there. I mean, of course.
Starting point is 00:35:20 There is that factor and you've got to be playing well. By the way, talking about great defense, this is a side note. George Lombard, Jr., that play where Jazz took him off the bag early in that first. What a great wherewithal, not to try to throw it to first with the fast runner in Simpson, but he goes back and tags the bag. George Lombard Jr. is a young upcoming stud who has made his presence felt. and he's going to be elite at second base for a long time. Next email.
Starting point is 00:35:47 No doubt. From Paul Tilden. My question is about two current players who I really love, Dansby and Michael Bush. Love Michael Bush and Dansby. I agree with you there. Paul, what can they do to hit better to match their fantastic defense? You want to take this? I think Dansby has, you're getting what you get.
Starting point is 00:36:11 Like that's who he's kind of always been. There's some swing and miss in there. He's a phenomenal defender. As you said, he hits home runs. He's got big time pop. You know, I think at this point's career, I don't know how much would change from that, but maybe he makes some adjustments.
Starting point is 00:36:28 Each year's unique and maybe he works on some of that in the off season. I think Michael Bush just had a down year for him. He was a spectacular last year offensively, and one of the guys that I thought carried him, carried them to the postseason, help carry them to the postseason. I think he just had a tough year, to be honest. He is great defender,
Starting point is 00:36:49 but I think he took a step back this year from what the expectations he had set from last year. Yeah, I mean, I think that Dan's at 19 home runs. It's not easy to find short stops with that type of pop, right? If he could get his average up a tick. Yeah, for sure. Everything boosts up.
Starting point is 00:37:09 Then you're looking at, you know, his career OPS is 729. He gets his average up a little bit, which he was earlier in his career. Earlier in his career, he was, you know, he hit 300. He had 270, 250, 270. So he was around that 800 OPS. So he gets a couple more base hits for Danesby. That leads to more confidence, which leads to more slug, which leads to just overall better being a product of baseball.
Starting point is 00:37:38 Yeah. And then, Bush, you know. I had him his first year, and he hit the ball the other way early on, and when he's like that, he's the most locked in. It looks like, you know, this year a little more pool happy. And like guys have good and bad years. I don't think this was a standout year for him offensively. But sorry to cut you off. Go ahead. No, no, no. Well, for Bushie, this is his first year legitimately playing every day, right? He playing 160 games. He was in there. He said, here you go. You've earned this. He had a monster year last year. And he can't. He can't. came on at the end of last year hitting lefties really well. So this is his first year really hitting lefties every day and not getting the mental days off. That's what a lot of people don't understand is when you play every day, there's no break. Right?
Starting point is 00:38:25 You're facing lefties. You're facing righties. There's no break. When you're not a true everyday player, you play and then, oh, let's give them a day. And that one day is such a reset. and if you get three of those a month, you still look like a everyday player, but you're not a full-time everyday player.
Starting point is 00:38:47 You know what I mean, Rossi? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Well said, bro. Those little mental resets, and that's Bushy's first year going through that full-time everyday player, where here you go. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:38:58 So. I love Michael Bush. I love him too. I think he's a great player, and I think that he'll learn a lot from this year going into next year, and I think you'll see him repeat you know, more of that 2025 version of him, not the 2026 version, which is still a very good player.
Starting point is 00:39:14 Well said. I haven't broke down the numbers as much, but I can guarantee you hit righties really well. It probably struggled a little bit off lefties. So yeah, yeah. Well said. The only way you hit left is better is by playing against lefties. That is right. All right. What's Jennifer got to say? Jennifer, your last email from Jennifer, besides trying to eliminate sign stealing, how do you feel about the impact of pitchcom in the game? Besides the pitcher and the catcher, does any other player or manager wear one. Oh, good question. That is a good question.
Starting point is 00:39:43 You're allowed five in the field. Okay? So is that right? Is it five? I'm blanking now. One, two, three. Yes, five. Five, right?
Starting point is 00:39:53 So usually pitcher catcher and then as middle infielders and the center field are usually all get one. Yeah. Yeah. So I love pitchcom. I wish I would have had it when I played. It just takes away some of the, some of the, you know,
Starting point is 00:40:09 speeds the game up. Yeah, just speeds the game up. I don't have to go through a whole, I was on McAfee the other day, explaining him different codes that we had at a second with John Lester and the different Kevin Brown used to be previous pitch. It was like so confusing to me at first and then it got to be really easy. But I like the sign stealing. Just speeds of the game. I love that pitchers can call their own pitches.
Starting point is 00:40:30 If they feel convicted about something, if they disagree. Yeah, I'm sure you would have love that when you caught. Hey, hey, I just want it outs. I just want to outs. No, you go here. John just thought he'd get smart every once in a while. I'm like, let me, let me just let me think through these things. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:40:49 Great question, though. I like pitchcom and I like that the center fielder can hear. I like that the middle infielder's can hear. You know, it depends on how you want to spread them out throughout the infield. But most teams use up the middle and in dead center because those guys are really important. Yeah, I love. I love it. It just speeds up the game.
Starting point is 00:41:10 It takes signs stealing from second base out of it, even from first base. Like when I used to steal bases, Rossi, I would just look in the catcher's glove from first base. If I saw them throw down off speed, I would take off, right? So at first base, they don't give multiple signs. Usually it's only at second base. That's right. So that eliminates a lot of the signs stealing that goes on in the game. Then you evolve, right?
Starting point is 00:41:36 And the paranoia of it. You're always feeling like somebody's picking something up. Yeah. Yeah. And there was one time, this is what you have to do when you're a below average runner. And shout out to me. I'm running the Bank of America's Chicago Marathon this Sunday. So I will show off my below average speed in this marathon.
Starting point is 00:41:56 But we're in Toronto. Slow and steady. We're in Toronto. It's funny because my son's favorite stuffy is a turtle. So probably that's what I emulate. Anyways, we're in Toronto, and Vladdy Jr. had his pitch come, and it was turned up high, so I was hearing the pitches from first base when I was on. I took a bag because of it. Sick.
Starting point is 00:42:16 Oh, you're always trying to get the edge. Always. I never wore it. I never wore it because I just, I couldn't. There'd be too many times. I'm like, why are we throwing that pitch? So I just, I always wanted to just not know. If you ain't cheating, you ain't trying.
Starting point is 00:42:29 That's what they say. You're not the saying. Yeah. So that's our game two of the division. Series, American League Division Series recap. Both teams are against the wall. I do not think these series are over. Hopefully that both teams can force a game four, right?
