This is The Herd, wherever you may be and however you may be listening live in Los Angeles, IHeart Radio. Fox Sports Radio and FS1. It is a Wednesday. We are packed news on Urban Meyer may break today. Jamie Maggio is filling in today on the show. Long Island girl, Eli Manning fan to a fault.
Starting point is 00:02:53 Filling in for Joy Taylor today. It's great to have you on the show. Thank you, Colin. Now everyone's going to hate me. You said I'm an Eli Manning fan. Well, no, there's nothing wrong with that. going to be a Hall of Famers, got two rings, it's all good. Let me start with this.
Starting point is 00:03:04 As a guy, let me just speak as a guy. There are certain guys I avoid. Guys that care about the wrong stuff. Car guy. You ever go to Twitter and see on an avatar, the picture that represents you, and a guy's got a car. Not your mom, not your dad, not a pet, not a sister, not a brother, not a cousin, not a group of friends, not a, hey, look at my car.
Starting point is 00:03:28 I can buy a car. A car. Dude, you care about the wrong stuff. That's the picture you chose. A car. You ever meet a guy? It's got three nice cars and lives in a crappy apartment. Hey, champ, want you to reel back on the autos.
Starting point is 00:03:43 You can only drive one at a time. Why don't you put some money in a mutual fund there? Tiger, knock yourself out. It grows. You can buy a nice house, not live in a crappy neighborhood, but have cool cars. Your Aston Martin's double parked. Guy that worries about the wrong thing, car guy. You watch hard knock?
Starting point is 00:04:01 episode, what was it, three? Do you notice in the last two episodes, all they talk about, how excited they get about dysfunctional wide receivers? I mean, last night, it's all about Des Bryant rolls into the building. Oh my God, Des Bryant's in the building! Episode two, it was Josh Gordon.
Starting point is 00:04:22 Josh Gordon, the last time he was good, Eddie Lacey was rookie of the year. He's played 10 games in four years. He's in three years. He's played five games. Josh Gordon. Here's Hugh Jackson. Reacting to Josh Gordon, just landing a plane in Cleveland.
Starting point is 00:04:40 This is the head coach of a losing football team that's won a game in two years. The bird has landed. The bird is here. Not in here, though. Not in here. But the bird's here. Has it been working out? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:04:57 Yeah. Todd Haley from a winning culture, Steelers. on the Arizona staff that won a Super Bowl, head coach in Kansas City got him to the playoffs. Todd Haley looks really good in this series. He's like, who cares? Is he working out? Hugh Jackson's like, oh, the Eagle has landed. The last time Josh Gordon was good.
Starting point is 00:05:17 Eddie Lacey was the rookie of the year. Peyton Manning was the best quarterback in the league. Tony Gonzalez now at our network made a Pro Bowl, and 7 of 11 offensive all pros have retired. That's Josh Gordon's last full season. By the way, Jarvis Landry got into a fight. I like him as a player, but he's all over the series. General manager John Dorsey yesterday, episode three,
Starting point is 00:05:35 is talking to scouts about wide receivers. I mean, they're talking about Antonio Calloway, another kid. He's all over it. Good God, folks. This is why the Cleveland Browns are the Cleveland Browns. You're the loser on Twitter that puts a car in your avatar. The guy with three fancy one that lives in a crappy apartment. Avoid dumb guy.
Starting point is 00:06:00 this is why they're the Browns. They're just fascinating. Not only with receivers, I mean, the best receiving course don't win Super Bowls, but dysfunctional wide receivers who have told you for years what they are. I mean, God, you think New England? You know what New England's been for the last 15 years?
Starting point is 00:06:19 There are times they've had week-wide receivers, below-average running backs, not great at lineback. They're always good on the offensive line. New England's always good on the offensive line. That's why they're not on hard knocks. They don't talk a lot. Oh my God. Josh Gordon's in town.
Starting point is 00:06:36 Des Bryant's in the building. Look at my car on Twitter. I own a really nice car. Oh, my God. And I'll tell you something. The guy that looks really good in this series is not the head coach. It's Todd Haley, the grown-up, who just came from, maybe you've heard of them, the winningest culture and the division, the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Starting point is 00:06:58 who, and he was a head coach, actually won games unlike Hugh, who was on that Arizona staff that played in the Super Bowl. This entire series, Todd Haley's come across, I admit as really intense and grumpy, but Saban's intense and grumpy. And Belichick's intense and grumpy, and Popovich is intense and grumpy. And successful people are really intense,
Starting point is 00:07:21 and they sometimes are a little grumpy because people don't live up to standards and care about the wrong things. things in life and in football. Let me shift gears to this. I want you to think for a second about a number. That number is 21, a two and then a one. 21.
Starting point is 00:07:47 Lamar Jackson is 21 years old. Sam Darnold is 21 years old. Josh Rosen, speaking to Arizona. Arizona Cardinals, 21. For the record, none of them. none of them will turn 22 years old during the season. They're young, 21-year-olds. 21-year-olds generally in society get entry-level jobs,
Starting point is 00:08:14 sometimes unpaid internships. 21 years old, you're a senior in college. This Friday, you're going to boogies, $5 all you can drink beers. That's appropriate for a 21-year-old. In America, rental car companies would not allow Sam Darnold, Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson, to rent a car.
Starting point is 00:08:45 Car rental companies would say, we don't trust Sam Darnold to get into a car, sit in a nice seat, GPS, put on a seatbelt, and drive without swerving into people. In America, our government, when Sam Darnold first came into this league, Couple months ago.
Starting point is 00:09:01 Sam was 20. Our government would not allow Sam Darnold to walk into a convenience store and buy a beer. They wouldn't allow it. The government thinks, no, he's not responsible enough to have some hops and barley after dinner. 21 years old. They will now all take over billion-dollar franchises. Go back to 2009. Only two quarterbacks ever at that time.
Starting point is 00:09:33 had started at 21 years old and qualified as starters. Bernie Cozor and Drew Bledsoe. Folks, we don't let them buy beer right before 21. They can't rent a car at 21. We have age limitations and restrictions all over America. Go back to your 21st birthday. What were you doing at 21? I was a mess.
Starting point is 00:10:00 And we're going to hand these guys, especially Darnold and Josh Allen, They're going to start week one. There's a real chance they'll start week one. So let's just do this. They're kids. They're kids. I'm going to tell you, and I think two of them have a chance to start week one, Sam Darnold. Sam Darnold, this year if he starts, oh, it's going to be bumpy.
Starting point is 00:10:27 It's going to be choppy because I watched every snap in college. He's going to throw for 17 touchdowns and he's going to have 14 interceptions and he's going to have seven fumbles and his passer rating is going to be 84.5. And oh, by the way, Josh Allen and Buffalo's got a little better arm, and I think they have slightly better receivers. He'll complete 60% of his throws. He'll have 19 touchdowns and 17 interceptions. His passer rating could be even lower because he'll throw the deep ball a little more, 79.5%. They're 21 years old. By the way, that's not to say we can't criticize them. Lamar Jackson is not close right now to starting the league. He needs at least a year to learn the offense. I said that going in. I called him a project, not a prospect going in,
Starting point is 00:11:16 and I still think he is a project. I think Donald's a prospect. I think Baker's a prospect. I think Rosen's a prospect. But just think about two in front of one. They're going to be, this is a lot. The last time I had a 21-year-old on my staff here, he fetched me coffee, and we didn't pay him. I can't imagine giving him a $2.9 billion franchise in America's biggest city with the media, which is the most relentless, largest, smartest, most in-tuned sports-aware media in the country chirping at him. Lamar, Josh, Darnold, they're 21 and won't turn 22 in the season. coming up next
Starting point is 00:12:14 I have the coach of the Philadelphia Eagles on the show is it Friday? We have Doug Peterson, Jamie on the show Friday. And I'm going to ask him this question because, man, is it me? Or are the Philadelphia Eagles becoming the Seahawks right after they won a Super Bowl? And by the way, the Seahawks dynasty has closed. They're now picked for third in their division. I'll have that story coming up.
Starting point is 00:12:42 Shopper Assurance. Hyundai's got a new shopper assurance program. Streamline purchasing, transparent pricing, flexible test driving so much more. HyundaiUSA.com slash shopper assurance. Do it today. Jamie Maggio is joining us. Joy Taylor is gone. I'm not even sure where Joy is.
Starting point is 00:12:57 She just flit it off to another part of the country. So it's great to have you in. So I like business. I like reading business books. I learn a lot. I don't know what I'm doing with business, but I'm fascinated by kind of the culture. of business and why things work.
Starting point is 00:13:11 And when you read a business book, business books will often give you examples of what to do and what not to do based on history. This company failed because of this. And this company succeeded because of this. And I love the examples. I often use those examples in this show because I think sports is business. And I often connected to it. That's what I like to read a lot.
Starting point is 00:13:33 And so when you watch something that succeeds, there's usually a process that you're duplicating. There's usually a path to success and there's usually also a path to failure. You can look at even for individuals if you get pregnant in your teens, your poverty chances explode in America. So try to avoid that, right? There's paths to success and paths to failure. Here's what we know. In the NBA, in the NBA, it's a star-driven league. It's not a coach or a system-driven league.
Starting point is 00:14:01 If you have LeBron, you win. If you have Kevin Durant, you win. If you have Steph Curry, you win. If you had Michael, Magic, Larry Bird, you win. If you had Wilk Kareem, you win, Shaq, Kobe, all that stuff. But the NFL's different. The NFL's not about one guy. Even a great quarterback is muted if they have a bad offensive line and a terrible head coach.
Starting point is 00:14:19 Even great coaches Bill Belichick, Pete Carroll have been fired when they couldn't get the quarterback right. It is a system. You have to memorize a playbook. You have a snap count. If one person moves a hand on the offensive line, no matter how good Aaron Rogers is, tweet, penalty, back it up five yards. It's about a system. here's something else we know about the NFL. It's not player-driven.
Starting point is 00:14:41 It's personnel and community coach GM-driven. Quarterbacks are valuable, but again, they can't succeed with the wrong people around them. Cocky, outspoken, is great in the NBA. LeBron can talk every day. It doesn't really work in the NFL because you might be saying something, but everybody in the locker room doesn't necessarily buy into it. And a couple years ago, I was very critical of the Seattle Seahawks.
Starting point is 00:15:06 Like, if somebody's going to talk on that, team make it Russell Wilson, not cornerbacks and defensive ends and eds rushers. And they just got too cocky and too loud and too political and too outspoken. And what happened to the dynasty? Never heard Russell Wilson talk and he was at work watching film. And I watched the Philadelphia Eagles and listen, they got a great GM Howie Roseman. Doug Peterson's on the show Friday. Obviously a sharp dude.
Starting point is 00:15:30 Carson Wentz is, to me, I was in love with Andrew Luck five years ago. He's the new guy. He's the new cat. He is actually, he's Andrew Luck, but more athletic. And I, you know, I mean, seriously, I think he's got a little better arm. But man, oh man, do they look like Seattle? Here's their coach. Doug Peterson excerpt from his book, Fearless.
Starting point is 00:15:50 Oh, boy, won a Super Bowl. Got to have a book. You know, it made me mad watching Jacksonville. They had New England right where they wanted them. I was screaming at the TV in my office when they knelt right before halftime. Inside, I was like, I'll never do that. I'll never do that. So he calls out Jacksonville.
Starting point is 00:16:04 Now, he's writing a book. Anybody can take an excerpt from a book and blow it up. But the fact that a coach wins a Super Bowl a couple years ago, he wasn't even calling plays in Kansas City, and now he's writing a book. Ooh, his team's making a lot of noise. Lane Johnson, offensive linemen, suspended twice PEDs, has doubled down ripping the Patriots.
Starting point is 00:16:27 They put billboards up in New England, taunting the Patriots. Head coach, I wouldn't have done what Jacksonville did. said, oh boy, folks, this is Seattle. Just look at the similarities between Philadelphia and Seattle. Both have an elite all-time quarterback talent. Carson Wentz, I know he doesn't have a lot of years. He's outrageously gifted. You don't even have to know football.
Starting point is 00:16:55 Carson Wentz is filthy good. He is, I mean, again, let's just say next seven years, he plays 14 games on average. That's a Hall of Famer. It's not hard to spot Hall of Famers. You can see it real quick with Aaron Rogers. That's a Hall of Famer. Deshawn Watson. You're like, oh, that doesn't look like everybody else.
Starting point is 00:17:11 Russell Wilson, Steve Young. Seattle's got Russell Wilson. So both Philadelphia and Seattle have a kind of flashy star quarterback. Both, by the way, have top line defenses. Have you seen the defenses for Seattle? Those are some Legion of Booms all-time stuff. Philadelphia Eagles defense. It isn't loaded, especially in that front seven.
Starting point is 00:17:35 It is loaded. Both Seattle and now Philadelphia have very expressive, outspoken cultures. The opposite, the antithesis of the Spurs, the Patriots, Alabama, outspoken, politically engaged. Both fan bases are like maybe the most intense in the league. I mean, Philadelphia and Seattle, Seattle has a name the 12th man. Philadelphia Eagle fans, didn't they build a jail? at one point in the bottom of the stadium because people were getting in fights. These are arguably the most intense fan bases in the league.
Starting point is 00:18:12 Both, by the way, Seattle and Philly have been to three Super Bowls and have one win. And in both instances, they got books. They're doubling down, taking shots at teams with multiple Super Bowls. By the way, both Philly and Seattle added outspoken political Michael Bennett. By the way, both Philadelphia in Seattle. lost key coordinators after the Super Bowl, like Dan Quinn for Seattle, went to Atlanta. Oh, yeah, he's real good.
Starting point is 00:18:44 Frank Reich is leaving Philadelphia going to Andrew Luck. Gut feeling is, yeah, that's going to work out. Listen, man, success is great. But if you want to make it last Alabama 10 years, New England, 18 years, NFL's not the NBA. Loud guy. talky guy, billboards, taunting, legendary coach quarterback guy. These eagle Seahawks from quarterback to defense to culture to fan base to Super Bowl appearances, Bennett losing key coordinators.
Starting point is 00:19:21 Now I got books. I got head coach got book. Got book. Does Bill Belichick have a book? Does Andy Reid have a book? I mean, Tom Coughlin had a book. I think it was after like 25 years coaching, multiple Super Bowls had a book.
Starting point is 00:19:40 Jason Whitlock talked about this yesterday on Speak for Yourself. I see a team that feels like they're on top of the world and they reinvented football and they are the end-all be-all football. And I just think teams like that oftentimes get humbled. I just tone it down a little bit, Philly. win a second Super Bowl, then this will seem more justified. Yes. Doug Peterson's on the show, what, Friday? I am going to scold him on a book.
Starting point is 00:20:13 I'm going to say, come on. I need more than two years coaching in the NFL before I get a book out. You know, he's buddies with Andy Reid, who's my all-time favorite guy. Jamie with the news. No, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. Colin. So first up, everybody, you either love or hate the New England Patriots and Tom Brady.
Starting point is 00:20:40 And Tom Brady came out and spoke on WEEI and Boston. It had a very interesting theory as to why you either love or hate them. Here's Tom. All right. You know, most Americans probably that live in other parts of the country, they don't like the Patriots. They don't like me. And I can understand that. I mean, I was a 49er fan at one point. They want to see their team win. And when they don't, you know, I think they got to direct that frustration somewhere else. And when you've been successful, like our team's been, frustration gets directed at us. I think it's a different part about football, for example, in America. I mean, if you look at a lot of other sports around the world, at some point maybe, you know, you get to represent your country.
Starting point is 00:21:17 In America, we never get a chance to do that. That's a really good point. Soccer players, basketball players at one point, the best ones, going to be on Team America. At one point, we all root for LeBron and we all rooted for Kobe, and we all rooted for Magic, and we all rooted for Bird, same with our soccer stars. But in football, you never get that opportunity. So the people that you hate, there's never a moment you like them. But if Tom Brady wore a Team USA jersey for one game,
Starting point is 00:21:43 we'd all get behind him for that game. And then in the regular season, you'd go back to hating him, unless you're a Patriots fan. I also think, yes, I also think, Jamie, like Duke basketball, the brand with a Patriots isn't as likable. I mean, just say it out loud. Supermodel, smarter than you. handsome, richer than you.
Starting point is 00:22:04 That's like Duke basketball. Like, by the way, Kansas is great in basketball, and Kentucky are great in basketball. They're not polarizing. I never meet anybody that goes, God, I hate Kansas basketball. But Duke's brand is academic power, elite, no NCAA violations.
Starting point is 00:22:19 New England's got that Duke brand where, just the words of it, supermodel, handsome, smarter. That rubs people the wrong. It's, yeah. I'm going to go out on a limb, though, and disagree with me. Tom on this theory because look at Derek Jeter.
Starting point is 00:22:33 Would you say that he's polarizing in that way? Love him or hate him? Dated all those, you know, beautiful women in New York, successful, you know, five-time World Series champion. He played in the 2006 World Baseball Classic at starting shortstop. So he represented Team USA.
Starting point is 00:22:49 People still hated him. Do they, do? Do people hate Jeter? I think they do. I think you either hate him or you want to be him. So your sense was in Long Island that you guys loved him in the world hated it. See, to my sense was, people hated A-Rod. Well, that's true, too.
Starting point is 00:23:05 See, I felt A-Rod was wildly polarizing. But you know what? When Derek, when I would be, I saw Jeter play in Seattle once. And it was like, people, I think, you know what they respected about Jeter? How hard he played like 17 years into the, I don't know. I've always felt A-Rod was wildly polarizing. And, you know, A-Rod's handsome and A-Rod's got the, you know, the celebrity thing. It is interesting.
Starting point is 00:23:29 But I don't think the Patriots are likable. all of the dynasty. Well, we'll keep the Patriots in the conversation for this next story. You know, we saw Des Bryant on Hard Knocks, a meeting with the Browns. He is still unsigned, and a fan was trying to recruit him on social media. So he responded with something that got the tongues wagging. Tom Brady has always been my favorite player, real fact. So Des Bryant thinks that Tom Brady is his favorite player. Do you think that he'd be a good fit with the Patriots? I kind of do. I like it. It's interesting because it's their weakest. unit on the roster.
Starting point is 00:24:03 They're a mess. And to be honest with you, what they don't have is a big occasionally vertical wide receiver. You know, it's not the, I mean, remember this too, Jamie, the way it works in the NFL. If you wait until the season to sign him,
Starting point is 00:24:21 then you only, if you cut him, you owe him like four weeks. If you sign him today, you got to pay him for the season. It's not crazy to think that New England has said, you know what, week one, If we sign in once the season starts, I don't think it's the craziest thing. It is absolutely right now that team's liability is they don't have a receiver that stretches the field at all. Gronks actually down the seam is their field stretcher.
Starting point is 00:24:46 And Bill Belichick can certainly handle a colorful personality. Finally, Colin here for you, Baker Mayfield, showing us he has many talents. He did a hilarious impression of his GM there in Cleveland, John Dorsey. You've got to see this. Hello, this is John Dorsey. How are you doing, buddy boy? Playing in the National Football League is a blessing. It's a privilege.
Starting point is 00:25:12 Not many people get to do it. You know what I mean, buddy boy? That's cool stuff. See, being a Cleveland Brown is way more than just playing football. It's about being an elf. It's about coming to work every day with your hard hat. and your airdorses and your sweater. And you strap on those shoes and you go to work.
Starting point is 00:25:45 What do you think of that there, buddy boy? Well, I think he's, I think Baker is a showman. I would prefer my backup quarterback, take a little more under the radar, subtle, preseason. It's a little Bush League. Maybe he should. It's not even that. It's just like, Baker, understand the room. You're the backup. You are the backup quarterback.
Starting point is 00:26:07 I don't need underwear ads. I don't need your abs. You are currently the second best quarterback on the most dysfunctional team in sports. Scale it back a little. It's a bunch of look at me stuff. Look at my underwear. Look at my abs. Look at my impression.
Starting point is 00:26:23 Look at my documentary. Look at my. Just just, dude. You know what I've seen from Tyrod Taylor? Who's a better player? Nothing. Yeah. Just scale it down a little.
Starting point is 00:26:34 I know the underwear ad got you fired. up yesterday, but could this demonstrate maybe a familiarity and comfort level between him and the GM? I will say this about Baker. He's fascinating. He plays tomorrow night on Fox. I'll watch him. He's got very much a Michael Vic appeal to me.
Starting point is 00:26:48 A lot of good quarterback. I've never once in my life said, God, Kirk Cousins is on. I like Philip Rivers. Hey, Philip Rivers is on. Michael Vic came into the league and I was like, I got to watch that guy. Baker's got me sucked in. I don't like all this stuff, but he is fascinating. and this is why he's selling things.
Starting point is 00:27:06 I don't think I'm alone in this. I can't wait to watch him play tomorrow. Jamie of the News. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Hurd-Lie News. Oh, he's my guy, Mr. Information. He's one of those guys that calls GMs like John Dorsey,
Starting point is 00:27:22 and they call him right back. To be Peter Schroger, be the Coward Global Satellite Network. Lordy, Lordy, Hard Knocks. You know what? We'll see. I want to talk about, you know, there's a lot of talk about Josh Allen in Buffalo. and Sam Darnold in New York and Baker Mayfield and Lamar Jackson's not ready.
Starting point is 00:27:42 But, you know, we're talking about him. Is there a young quarterback interesting to you right now that people are talking about? I feel like we're in late August and we're not even ready for what's about to hit us. Colin, I hate to hype this up like a summer blockbuster. The Patrick Mahomes era is about to begin and we got just a taste last Friday night. It was like man walking on the moon or the Beatles doing Ed Sullivan on my phone when he threw this pass. a 70-yard pass in the air in an NFL game. It hasn't been done since Aaron Rogers
Starting point is 00:28:11 through a Hail Mary years ago. And, Colin, this is a long time coming. Mahomes is about to take the league by storm. I don't know if the Chiefs are better off with Patrick Mahomes, but I do know we are. All we hear about is NBA Twitter. This guy's about to blow up and explode on Twitter every Sunday because he is a freak.
Starting point is 00:28:27 Remember Alex Smith took this team to playoffs four to five years, and he did not leave as a free agent. The Kansas City Chiefs actively traded away Alex Smith because they felt they had a Ferrari in the garage that they were not using. This kid is going to take the league by storm this year. And Colin, everyone I talked to in Kansas City is like one of those things where they're like quietly,
Starting point is 00:28:48 like just like, all right, we're not going to be the ones to say it. Just wait. I remember being at the Combine. Back in February, they had just traded away Alex Smith. It wasn't official yet. And I had someone from the Chiefs Organization show me a video on their phone of him throwing the ball in practice
Starting point is 00:29:02 80 yards in the air. So as much as we want to go Google Gaga over Baker Mayfield and talk about how fantastic it is to have Deshawn Watson, this is the guy that a franchise is really banking on. And Colin, I'm telling you, because I know you love being on a stock early. Get on the bandwagon now, because every week there's going to be a pass like this.
Starting point is 00:29:22 And then he has a no-look pass last year in week 17. Like a no-look pass across his body, Farve stuff. So I'm getting geeked up about it because I just feel like we're not talking about the Chiefs. And if anyone knows quarterbacks, it's Andy Reid, and Brett Veach, a young general manager, said, I'd rather have this young guy than a guy who took us to the playoffs four to five years. Yeah, Bruce Smart guy. Peter Schrager joining us. Okay, let's talk about it.
Starting point is 00:29:44 It's interesting. We know it in Buffalo, Josh Allen's probably going to start, and we know in Baltimore, Lamar's not ready. Flacco's going to start. We know most of this stuff. And we know that Bradford right now is better than Rosen, and that offensive line in Arizona is not good. They'd rather Bradford take a few pops early. Here's the interesting one, though. The Jets have an awful offensive line, and Teddy Bridgewater is absolutely viable on an open market.
Starting point is 00:30:08 You can get stuff for Teddy Bridgewater. To me, he's a starter for about eight teams in this league. So you're the Jets, Shragues, and you got Darnold. The schedule's pretty workable early, some winnable games. Do you play Teddy, win a couple, show him off and trade him? You know, this is what the Eagles did. Bradford got picks, moved up. what are they going to do in New York
Starting point is 00:30:31 with Bridgewater and Darnold both, I think, good enough to play. Bridgewater, though I think probably better today and certainly tradable. Well, Colin, I'm pretty connected with those Jets guys, and they all say the same thing. What an embarrassment of riches, because it's not just Bridgewater who looks good, and it's not
Starting point is 00:30:46 just... Josh McCown's a viable starter in the NFL also, so they have three guys. I would be surprised if they traded Teddy Bridgewater. Here's the reason why. He's 25 years old. He's taking a team to the playoffs, and he's been the ultimate. veteran. He has taken Donald under his wing. So to trade him for a second round pick or a third round pick, that might make sense on paper and people on fantasy football might say, oh, well, you trade him because he got Darnold.
Starting point is 00:31:10 You said it earlier in the show. Darnold is 21 years old. He's the youngest quarterback in the NFL. What's the rush? Bridgewater is 25. McCown is 39. They're both viable starters. This is an embarrassment of riches. And I would not be shocked if Teddy Bridgewater got the nod, even though everyone says Donald's got the inside track. I know they love Teddy as well. And what he's overcome and what he has become in that locker room is a leader. So Teddy Bridgewater has a lot of supporters in that room. And that's nothing against Sam Donald or Josh McCown.
Starting point is 00:31:39 He just might be the best quarterback in that room right now. By the way, I was told by an NFL player, a guy who's been to a Super Bowl over the weekend, that the Jets don't have a quarterback coach. Only three teams don't because this player said that is the best quarterback room right now in the league. that Josh McCown is seen by NFL coaches as the next potential player who becomes a coach. So they love...
Starting point is 00:32:03 Colin, last year, he was done with the Browns. He was looking for a team. The Cleveland Browns offered Josh McCown at 38 years old, still an active player in the league, their quarterback's job. He said, no, no, I still want to play. Goes on to play for the Jets and then gets the biggest contract of his career,
Starting point is 00:32:18 a $10 million one-year deal. But he was offered the Browns quarterback's coach last year as a coach, and now he's with the Jets. and Jeremy Bates is the offensive coordinator. You're right. In that room, though, it's McCown's room. Shreg's, interesting year for Dak Prescott.
Starting point is 00:32:31 So I can break it down in two ways. I can say he's won 22 games in two years. Only the Steelers and Patriots have won more. Or there's also this narrative that's like, yeah, but you know, when Tyron Smith got hurt and Zeeke was out, he's not the same guy. Jason Whitten's gone. Is everybody, and sold is the wrong word, Shreggs.
Starting point is 00:32:51 But I think it's a pivotal year for Dad. that there are still people in that room that are not 100% sure. Am I wrong on that? Well, look, 2016, he was the face of the league. They were the number one seat in the NFC. And if Rogers doesn't hit Cook on that incredible pass, maybe the Cowboys win the Super Bowl. But last year did not go great.
Starting point is 00:33:11 They went 9 and 7, but it didn't feel like 9 and 7. Here's why it's so fascinating. Gough and Went, same draft class, our first round picks. So their teams have a fifth-year option on those guys. That means they could be locked up for five years and they're entering their third year. Dak Prescott went on day three, a fourth round pick. So what does that mean?
Starting point is 00:33:27 It means that he only has a four-year contract, and he can start negotiating at the end of this season. So a contract is looming for Dak. It feels like we just got to know him, but we're already at contract extension talk time. And if he comes in without Des and without Witten and with that questionable defense, and he lights it up and the Cowboys are America's team
Starting point is 00:33:46 and we see him on Thanksgiving winning, he's going to be the guy for a generation for Cowboys fans. He is the Akeman, he is the stalback, he is the Romo. But if he is not great and they take a big step back, don't expect them to back up the Brinks trucks just because he was good three years ago. It's a fascinating year for Dak because his contract already is an issue and it's going to come up at the end of this season. Eagles coach Doug Peterson's on my show Friday. When he came into this league, I said, I don't know.
Starting point is 00:34:12 He didn't even call plays with Andy Reid. And I was wrong. I mean, he was, I thought his Super Bowl coaching was unbelievable. Aggressive. One of the rare times I thought Belichick and New England got outsmarted. And that doesn't happen very often. But, God, he's writing a book now. He's taking a shot at the Jags now.
Starting point is 00:34:28 And I'm like, y, y, y, y. Philadelphia feels like Seattle to me. A lot of talk, lot of noise. Right or wrong. Do you feel it, too? And they added Michael Bennett. They added Mike Wallace. They added some guys.
Starting point is 00:34:41 It's not going away. They also get back Jason Peters and Jordan Hicks and Darren Sproles. They believe they're on top of the world. And I'm okay with that. The best response, though, was Doug Marones. And no one really picked it up in the media because no one does one second of research, but he said, I read a good book this summer, too. It was by a guy named Mark Manson. Google it. I googled it. The book is called The Subtle Art of Not Giving a
Starting point is 00:35:02 bleep. So I think Doug Marone had the ultimate comeback on that one. And if you know the Jaguars, they don't give a bleep. Shragues, look at Shreg. You look so happy. Feel good. Football, baby. He looks so handsome and happy and full-faced in New York, and that show's doing you well. By the way, he's on our Sunday show on Fox. NFL kickoff. He's going to be here for most of the season on the show on Sundays. Great seeing you, buddy. Can't wait. I love coming on, Colin. Thanks so much. All right, Peter Schreger, I get such great feedback on Shregs. He's so connected.
Starting point is 00:35:35 Coming up next, I'm going to make you money. I'm just going to give people money. I'm just going to start taking notes. You know, Goula is asking for money all the time. I'm just going to give you some. Coming up next with a football bat. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific. Starting point is 00:35:56 That's why we're fans of Hyundai's new Shopper Assurance program, streamlined purchasing, transparent pricing, flexible test driving. Go to HyundaiUSA.com slash shopper assurance. Jamie Maggio is joining us. Grew up on Long Island, not in Long Island, on Long Island. She is a buddy of mine who worked with you, John Ireland, just texted me and said she's the best, but don't let her tell you how great the giants are.
Starting point is 00:36:19 Now, John, you've been working with me for the better part of a decade. On and off, he left me for a while, and he came back. He missed me. And so on Fridays, I do a blazing five. And I make five picks against the spread. And I take it seriously. I always have. One year I had 60%.
Starting point is 00:36:39 John, you remember that year. I would have finished second in the Las Vegas Hilton Super Bowl, super pick contest and won $800,000. I would have finished second. You were annoyingly impressive. Annoyingly, even Scott Van Pelt's like year. ridiculous and I don't even know where you're getting these picks. So I take it seriously. I try to hit about 60. I usually get into the 57, 58, which could make you a pro better. But I do take it
Starting point is 00:36:59 seriously. And the reason I do pretty well is A, I bet numbers, not teams. And number two is I bet against the public. Because the public always falls for flashy stuff and quotable stuff. And here's a prime example. According to Caesar's Palace, more people are betting the brand. Browns and the Raiders than the Patriots. Now, I know what you're saying. They're also betting the Steelers. So you're saying, well, Colin, you can only make money if you take a big underdog. No, it's Raiders, Browns, and Steelers.
Starting point is 00:37:33 So you're not going to make any money on the Steelers either. The reason those are popular teams is because you have a quotable, flashy head coach with one, John Gruden. You have flashy wide receivers with the other Pittsburgh Steelers, flashy running back, flashy receivers. And the other one, Cleveland is on hard knocks with a flashy rookie and, you know, kind of a crazy public team, the Cleveland Browns. Flashy receiver, flashy coach, flashy TV shows, which history shows guarantee that you will not win a Super Bowl.
Starting point is 00:38:09 And this is why, just think about this with Cleveland. Now, just think about how stupid a bet this is. They have a quarterback controversy looming, nightmare. They have a coach who didn't win a game last year, who's on the hot seat, nightmare. They have a series of dysfunctional wide receivers, nightmare. They're on hard knocks. You know what happens to the teams on hard knocks. They are an awful bet.
Starting point is 00:38:36 They have these looming, hovering controversies and firings that are imminent, that will happen, not a matter of, you know, if it's when. Let me show you a team you should bet. Now, the key when you bet teams is a team has to have a legitimate shot to win a Super Bowl. Otherwise, you might as well, that's a floor, Matt. You're just walking on that money. There's no reason to bet a team that can't win the Super Bowl. So bet a team that's got, and what do you need to win a Super Bowl?
Starting point is 00:39:05 You need the personnel. You got to have top 10 personnel in the league. You don't have to have top three personnel. Atlanta got to a Super Bowl a couple years ago. I didn't think they had top two personnel. I didn't think they had the best personnel in the NFC, but you got to have good personnel and you got to have a legitimate quarterback. Okay, those are the two things you have to have.
Starting point is 00:39:24 Then it's a series of breaks. Can you stay healthy? Are you going to win a bunch of games in division? Will you go 5 and 0 in division or 4 and 2 in division? So look at the NFL championship odds right now. New England's at the top and the Rams are way up there and the Steelers are way up there. But you're not going to make a lot of money betting those teams. Here's the best team to bet in terms of.
Starting point is 00:39:43 of if you want to make some money. Go to the AFC and look up the Chargers. Okay, so they're 18 to 1. First of all, they have personnel. They have a top running back, elite edge rushers, a good pro-bowl left tackle, a borderline Hall of Fame quarterback. The weakness on that team last year was defense. They addressed both.
Starting point is 00:40:04 They addressed safety and linebacker right through the gut in their draft. They have an above-average offensive line. By the way, in their division, they face. Pace Keenham twice, young Patrick Mahomes twice, and John Gruden, who's been out of the league for a decade twice. They got a good chance to go four and two in that division, although they have struggled through the years with Kansas City. So they lost five games last year by one possession.
Starting point is 00:40:29 They were nine and three in their last 12 games. So they're coming off a season with a ton of momentum and a highly graded, many thought it was the top two or three drafts in the league. The only question is Anthony Lynn the coach. That's it. I mean, we don't know. But we didn't know about Doug Peterson after a year either. We didn't really know.
Starting point is 00:40:48 We thought maybe Anthony Lent, well, I don't know. But that's a bet. And nobody's betting them. That's a real bet. I get the personnel. I get momentum. I get the things in this league that matter. Above average O line.
Starting point is 00:41:03 Good left tackle. Top quarterback. Excellent edge rusher. Control the ball with the running back. They got it all, folks. Last year, they weren't good at kicking. and they were struggling through the middle of their defense. But I think their division now with Alex Smith out,
Starting point is 00:41:19 Patrick Mahomes, you don't know what you're getting. John Gruden, Cleo McNott signed, you don't know what you're getting. And Denver with Case Keenham. Come on now. Case Keenham outside of Minnesota last year is kind of a 7-9, 6-10 quarterback in his history. That's a bet. Don't fall for shiny flat. But you know what?
Starting point is 00:41:38 San Diego's the second team in L.A. Philip River's kind of boring. he's not in the news much. You don't know who their head coach is. I mean, you know, their most known guy is like Philip Rivers and Joey Bosa was in college three years ago. So you're talking about one of these teams that's boring. Avoid flashy, dysfunctional, quotable. Chargers are your best bet.
Starting point is 00:42:00 A team that could win the Super Bowl. Not saying they will. Don't think they will. But you're not throwing away money with that. Hour two. Joel Klatz, that's join her next. This is the herd. wherever you may be and however you may be listening live in Los Angeles.
Starting point is 00:42:16 Iheart Radio Fox Sports Radio on FS1. Jamie Maggio is joining me today in for Joy, Taylor, Seth Joyner, and five minutes I'm getting all over. Seth Joyner and his cocky, talkative Philadelphia Eagles. Yep, yep, yep, yep, yep, yep, yep, yep, yep, yep, yep. Good to have you in. Thank you. This is so New England. So the helmet rule is getting a lot of talk.
Starting point is 00:42:38 And players are complaining about it, and TV announcers are complaining about it, and TV announcers are complaining about it. Everybody's complaint. Coaches yesterday, Mike Zimmer's complaining about it. Everybody's complaining about it. Except Bill Belichick. Bill Belichick says, well, it's no big deal. Here's Bill Belichick.
Starting point is 00:42:55 It's not a change for us, not a change for our coaching staff. We've never taught that. We've never taught tackling with the crown of our helmet, putting our head down, and leading our body forward in that type of position. I don't think fundamentally that's a good position to be in. It's not effective. And there's a lot of things it can go wrong besides getting hurt, and that's an important one.
Starting point is 00:43:14 We've always tackled and blocked with our head up and our eyes open our head back so we can see what we hit. That's the only way I've ever coached it. And if we do it that way, then we'll be within rules. He's a step ahead every time. There was an amazing moment last year when they beat the Steelers, and Jesse James for the Steelers caught a ball and extended into the end zone. And even though I hated the call, I understood the call, they took the touchdown away. After the game, New England players said, and this is so New England,
Starting point is 00:43:50 we've always been taught not to extend after a catch because that's where the fumbles happen. New England has Jesse James, they win that game. Pittsburgh should have been in the Super Bowl. New England players said, yeah, we're taught that you don't ever extend because the numbers show that's where the fumbles happen. even on the catch rule, everybody complained about it and New England was a step ahead.
Starting point is 00:44:18 Remember a few years ago when the NFL had to ban, they had to ban the move. They did that play against the Baltimore Ravens. They called it the Genius Formation, which was absolutely legal. They were a step ahead and the league had to literally, they had to have meetings because it wasn't illegal. They put a player as a receiver. It's legal to do it. They were ahead of the league and the officiating crews. There's an amazing stat about New England, and people don't consider this.
Starting point is 00:44:50 Vegas considers fumbles to be random. In Las Vegas, if you have a year when you fumble a lot and then the next year you don't fumble, they consider fumbles random. I would argue they're not as random as you think. fewest fumbles lost in the last decade. New England leads the league. But not only that, well-run organizations, Baltimore, Atlanta, Green Bay, and the Colts five years ago were well-run. They had to just replace people upstairs.
Starting point is 00:45:21 Those are all top-run organizations for at least five of the last 10 years. You don't see Cincinnati in there. You don't see Cleveland in there. There's a lot of, you don't see Jacksonville in there. Ben Jarvis Green Ellis played four years with New England. Rush the ball over 500 times. Never fumbled. He went to Cincinnati for two years.
Starting point is 00:45:44 Fumbled five times. Same player. Is that nobody looks at fumbles as anything other than random, even Vegas. Then why does New England lead it every year? Why are teams like the Packers, who haven't always had great running games? Baltimore. Indianapolis five years ago, very well run.
Starting point is 00:46:04 Every time a rule comes out, every single time a rule comes out, New England is ahead of the league. Everybody's freaking out about the helmet rule. Belichick's like, no, this is what we've taught forever. This is, there's nothing about this rule that will ever get us in trouble. We will not be penalized for it. This is what we do. They're just smarter than other people.
Starting point is 00:46:25 I mean, they just are. With that, Philadelphia, wins a Super Bowl. And I swear to God, billboards, yep, yep, yep, book, their coach now has a new book.
Starting point is 00:46:40 Belichick's got any books? With that former Eagle Great, three-time pro bowler. Super Bowl champ, Seth Joyner, the voice of Philadelphia. I'll get to Philadelphia in a second. I got a feeling this is going to be a battle royal.
Starting point is 00:47:01 Okay. First of all, let me defend defensive players on the helmet thing. When I see a running back rolling downhill on a third and two, and you're standing right by the first down marker because you know where you are, and you're supposed to stop him with an arm tackle. I understand no helmets, but I see running backs, fullbacks, lowering their head.
Starting point is 00:47:25 So I would imagine to a guy like you who on those third and three, Seth, you know where the marker is. You are standing in front of the marker. how do you stop speed with thrusting your body, right? Full on body to body. That's the only way you're going to stop is momentum. And so the helmet rule to you drives you nuts?
Starting point is 00:47:43 Absolutely, it drives me nuts because it's so slanted towards, it's so slanted towards the, you know, the defensive side of the ball. They get all the penalties. They get all the penalties. So there's a statistic out there. Someone ran the numbers.
Starting point is 00:47:57 In 33 preseason games, there have been, 51 of these helmet to helmet calls. Yeah. Okay. 48 of them have been on the defense. So, or 43, one of those numbers. So I'm like, that makes no sense.
Starting point is 00:48:15 And I'd be hard pressed for someone to find and show me where it's been called on the offensive side of the ball. I don't remember why. Because I've been watching preseason games all preseason. I have not seen one of those calls on the offensive side of the ball. But every single time you see a running back when he's finishing a play, He's trying to lower his center of gravity. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:48:33 And he lowers his head to run over the defensive player. And when the defensive player lowers his center of gravity and his head goes down below, he's the one that gets penalized for striking with the helmet. So I've got to talk about this. Like I'm a big believer. NBA is a star sport. I mean, LeBron talks every 15 minutes, Kevin Durant. But that's the league.
Starting point is 00:48:54 And I love the NBA. You know, I mean, Iverson had a brand that was bigger than his team. LeBron's had a brand that's bigger than his team. NFL's different. I mean, offensively, if the right tackle moves his finger, we all step back five yards and a penalty. You're really part of a community. As great as Aaron Rogers is, he's got won Super Bowl because he hadn't had the backs,
Starting point is 00:49:13 hadn't had the defense, hasn't had the line. We know in the NFL, chatter, chatter, chatter, chatter, chatter, politics, politics, talk, talk, talk, taunt, taunt, taunt, taunt. It just doesn't win. Alabama doesn't talk. New England doesn't talk. Philadelphia can't stop talking. You got a head coach with a book.
Starting point is 00:49:32 You're putting up billboards taunting New England. Yeah, everybody's talk. I got Lane Johnson's been suspended twice. He's taking shots. It's getting a little loud in Philadelphia. Is it not? It's okay. When you're King of the Hill, you can...
Starting point is 00:49:43 Oh, boy. What do you do? When you're the King of the Hill, what do you do? You roar. That's what you do. You want everybody to know. You're marking your territories. You go, you want everybody to know
Starting point is 00:49:54 I'm the King of the Hill, and I'm going to be King of the Hill for a while until someone can knock me off. That sounds. cocky to me. That's okay. That's okay. Because, you know, the one thing you have to be in the game of football is cocky, confident. Some people like it inwardly, like New England, because I guarantee you, on the inside, they feel the same exact way. We can't be stopped. We're dominant. We've been to eight Super Bowls and one four, and there's nothing like us, okay? They do it inwardly. Philadelphia is not
Starting point is 00:50:23 that kind of city. What do you mean? What does that mean? Philadelphia is not that kind of city because, you know, listen, we've suffered. The city of the city of. The city of Philadelphia has suffered for 57 years before it actually won its second championship. Maybe it's suffered. The last time that we won a championship was 1960 and it was outside of the modern Super Bowl era. And every other team in the Northeast corridor and Weston, Pennsylvania has won almost multiple Super Bowls with the exception of New York Jets.
Starting point is 00:50:52 So you want to understand and know why the Philly fans are so darned arnery. That's why. Maybe if you had kept it to yourself, you have more than that. No, that's easy. That's easy for someone, you know, whose favorite team has actually won a Super Bowl. It's easy for them to say. But when you're a fan in Philadelphia,
Starting point is 00:51:11 and you've been suffering 57 years without winning a Super Bowl, when you get one, and that's been your M.O. To be passionate and voiceless and, you know, wear your emotions out on your collar. You know what that sounds like to me? Sounds like Seattle. They never stopped talking. That's okay.
Starting point is 00:51:28 And now, by the way, their little big dynasty there, whoo, it's done. Injuries. Oh, injuries and guys talking about stuff that's not football and guys being loud. But that's on the peripheral after you look at the fact that they've had a decline. That's easy to say after the fact. But when they were, you know, whipping behinds and taking names and running their mouths and daring people, you know, to come at them, what was going on then? They were dominant. But just like every other team with the exception of, you know,
Starting point is 00:52:01 the New England Patriots, because you have in the mix Bill Belichick and Tom Brady, they are the difference maker, okay? They're the only team that can, that is the anomaly in all of this because of their sustainability. To be as great as they've been for 15 years together, and still this year they'll be right back there in the mix again. They're the anomaly. But when you look at that,
Starting point is 00:52:27 a defensive oriented team like Seattle, yeah, they're going to be chirping because they want to intimidate you. Because the way that the rules are going, they're taking away our ability to intimidate you via the physicality of the game. So you know what, I'll get in your ear. And if I can psychologically,
Starting point is 00:52:43 if I can psychologically throw you off. That's your best. That's pretty good argument right there. You like that, I know. Well, that's pretty good. You left it till the very end, but it's pretty damn good at the end. So you can't do anything physically, so you want to talk, getting guys' ears. No, listen, I understood when I played that the game is, you know, 85% mental.
Starting point is 00:53:02 Because when you get to the level of the NFL, there's 32 teams, 53 players on every roster, 16169 players, okay? You're pretty evenly matched. Yes. The difference is coaching and things of that nature. The physical side of it, there's no question about that. But if I can get in your mind and get you thinking about something besides what you're supposed to do, If I can rattle you mentally and psychologically, then I can dominate you. I can dominate you.
Starting point is 00:53:29 So I'm trying to get you off of your game. So I'm watching Hard Knocks, and I just saw a story that Caesar's Palace Sportsbook is saying, more people are betting the Browns to win the Super Bowl than New England, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Green Bay. And I'm like, that's Hard Knocks. Is it Hard Knocks? You're watching them, and you're like, oh, my God, all these wide receivers and Des Bryant may be here in Josh Gordon. What do you make of that?
Starting point is 00:53:55 Well, you know, I think HBO and Las Vegas has got something going to begin with. Because if you think the Cleveland Browns are winning the Super Bowl and you're betting your money on it, you know, I got a couple of pockets that I need stuff. You can bring some money over here. You're literally burning your money. Absolutely. Absolutely. But will the Cleveland Browns be a better football team this year?
Starting point is 00:54:20 Absolutely. I mean, I'm actually thinking about, you know, putting a little something, on them to go 8 and 8. Because I think they're going to be an 8-8 team this year. I actually do. Would you start Baker or no? Tyrod's absolutely better today. If you don't have Terad in the mix,
Starting point is 00:54:37 and you draft him number one, then I say, yes, you do. But when you've made the decision that Tarad is going to be your starter and you sign him to a $16 million contract, you've already made that. And you knew that you had picks one and four. Then you follow your plan. There's nothing wrong with that. And there's another element to this, you know, that you have to think about.
Starting point is 00:54:58 Hugh Jackson is one and 32 in the last two seasons, okay? I'm amazed that he still has his job. But there must be some kind of synergy between he and John Dorsey. Because if John, and John's connected to, this is John's pick, Baker Mayfield. If he wanted that guy to play, that guy would be playing. So that tells me that there's some synergy between the decision-making, between the head coach and the GM to say that Tarad Taylor is going to be the starter.
Starting point is 00:55:27 Now, Hugh Jackson knows he's on the hot seat. He's trying to win football games to save his job. He's got to win seven or eight games to ensure another year. If he goes 4 and 12, 2 and 14, it's a wrap. So I have no problem whatsoever with this guy saying that, you know what, Tarah gives me the best chance to win. I'm going to play him. We're going to red shirt Baker this year
Starting point is 00:55:51 and see where it goes. from there, give ourselves an extra year. Not only for Baker to grow, but for us to improve this team so that now we can get into a position where we can really, really be competitive. You know who's on my show Friday? Who is that? Doug Peterson. Good.
Starting point is 00:56:05 Your first thing I'm going to say, oh, you know, winning a Super Bowl. I've got a book now. It's okay. I got a book. Belichick doesn't have a book. Everyone's trying to monetize themselves every way they can. Belichick, I told you, New England is the, is the anomaly. Does Andy Reid have a book?
Starting point is 00:56:21 Do not, well, you've got to look at personalities. You know, Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots are the anomaly. Andy Reid hasn't won a Super Bowl, so he, what book is he going to write that anybody wants to read? Come on! He's an excellent coach. He is a good coach. A great coach. But he can't win the big game.
Starting point is 00:56:41 Oh, get out of here. That's like saying, how many Super Bowls do you accept couldn't win the big game? You're a pro bowler. That's okay. And my point is, my point is, people are drawn to winners. And he reads one, 64% of his game. Indorseable products
Starting point is 00:56:59 draw people who win. The reason why Doug Peterson has this book is because he is the head coach of the reigning Super Bowl champions. It doesn't matter how many games somebody else won. It's like going into a season. All 32 teams at the beginning of the year
Starting point is 00:57:16 think that they believe that they have an opportunity to win the Super Bowl. When you get to February, word, there's only one team that walks away as Super Bowl Victor. The other 31, you know what? That season was a wash. It was a loss. I don't care if you went 16 and 0 like the Patriots did. When you lose
Starting point is 00:57:32 the Super Bowl, the rest of the season is a watch. It doesn't mean anything. You know what Belichick did in the off-season? Watch game film. Here was Doug Peterson, Guley. Dear Readers, Chapter 4 of my amazing career. So Bill Belich-
Starting point is 00:57:48 Books. Bill Belichick is in entire career has been a defensive-minded coach, okay? Yeah. If I got 41 points hung on me in the Super Bowl, I'd watch some film, too. Yeah. That's a good way to close. Seth's joining her. Good seeing you, bud.
Starting point is 00:58:04 Buy seller hold is right around the corner. Car shopping's confusing. Dealer price, list price invoice. True car shows you the way. Check out the true price from true car. By the way, story yesterday, Kobe was going to play in the big three. Now, the big three is here at Fox FS1, right? It's ours.
Starting point is 00:58:21 Ice Cube and ours. So everybody here loves it. I like it. They're drawing like 18,000 people. It's a real business. So I'm not criticized in the league. Kobe Bryant shouldn't play in the big three. I said it.
Starting point is 00:58:30 Everybody's mad at me here. My bosses are mad at me. It's like I said, Terrell Owens. Once you wear a gold jacket, you're done playing football. Don't go to Canada. Canada's a real league. CFL's been around for a zillion years. It's got real players.
Starting point is 00:58:44 Vince Farragama, Warren Moon. Been great players. But once you're Johnny Carlin, Kobe Bryant are different. Kobe Bryant's a top 10 player of all time. LeBron is maybe the best player of all time. Terrell Owens is a gold jacket guy. Johnny Carson retired.
Starting point is 00:59:03 He didn't do after school specials. By the way, nothing wrong with after school specials. I grew up watching after school specials. I'm pro afternoon school specials. But I don't care if you're an all-star big three. I just think for legends, drop the mic and walk away. drop when you're a legend you just i'm done i'm going to go own car dealerships that's and then by the way you can win an oscar Kobe won an Oscar you can have blaze pizza you can but i think there when you
Starting point is 00:59:33 are a legend Derek jeter i don't want you coming back going to the ownership thing but i i think and i'm pro big three but in a weird way there's part of me like i don't want to see Kobe ever play again ever ever anywhere anytime any network any place am i nuts on that my boss is right now Our Furious. This could be my last show. But I just, Kobe's like way up there. And it's, I just, Johnny Carson, I never wanted to see him on TV again. Like the last, when he did the show with Robin Williams, Bet Midler, dropped the mic, and there were reports he would come back. I'm like, no, no, no, no, no. That's it. It's over. David Letterman. He can go to a Netflix special. Interview a former president. But that's it. That's your last show. Go. Leave.
Starting point is 01:00:18 I appreciate your viewpoint on that. You want him to go out the way that he did never come back. However, yeah, your bosses at Fox are going to be pretty upset with you for saying that. And also, I think there's a huge fan base that would just love to see him suit up one more time and get out there. But I think you're right. That's not going to happen. And I don't think his wife would let him come back either. I think they're enjoying the family time.
Starting point is 01:00:36 They should. They have a good life. Jamie with the news. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. All right, Colin, first up, Aaron Roger. and the Packers are still working on a new deal, but in a radio interview,
Starting point is 01:00:52 Rogers made it pretty clear he is not trying to screw the Packers. Take a listen. I'm not trying to screw them, you know. This is a partnership. That's the only way this is going to work and the best way things work in this situation is that we're in this thing together. And if they make that financial commitment,
Starting point is 01:01:11 that's what they're saying. And also there's an expectation that you're going to play well. And then that's my side of the bargain. and if nothing gets done, it won't change anything because all I'm worried about right now is playing a ball. Why in the world would Aaron Rogers be screwing the Packers? The media route for NBA guys to get new deals. If I hear one media guy bang on Aaron Rogers for a new contract,
Starting point is 01:01:36 I think I'm going to spend an hour on it. Like, he's the best true quarterback talent we have in the league with Brady. And he's trapped for five years because of that awful franchise tag. Aaron Rogers should restructure a new deal. And by the way, it should be Aaron Rogers friendly. But it's not. And it won't be. I agree with you.
Starting point is 01:01:53 It should be. And he should get paid. Yeah, I just, it's amazing. The media is so pro NBA guy getting paid. Marginal NBA guy getting paid. But if a quarterback's like, let's restructure it. Like if anybody criticizes Aaron Rogers on this, they're out of their gourd. He leaves that franchise.
Starting point is 01:02:11 He did. They're the Browns. I mean, they don't have elite defensive talent. of a running back all these years. I mean, they'd restructured their front office because they knew they were underachieving with him. Let's have fun with this next one. LeBron James all eyes on him this summer. He was working out at UCLA yesterday with a couple of familiar faces, some notable 2019 free agents and Kevin Durant and Kauai Leonard. So this photo went viral. Everybody's talking about it. Everyone's making a big fuss. Like LeBron is having a sleepover with these guys afterwards
Starting point is 01:02:40 and they're going to watch scary movies and prank girl girls that they have crushes on. This is just what NBA players do know in the offseason. Especially in L.A. They're here in L.A. UCLA's got a great gym. These guys know each other from Team USA, from various play over the years. This isn't an unusual thing. We shouldn't make a big deal out of this, right? Right. No. This is what they, in Los Angeles,
Starting point is 01:03:01 you get these legendary pickup games. And this is Kauai Leonard's there, Durant, LeBron, is, is that, is that Kyle? I'm not sure. Is that Kyle? I couldn't tell the Who is that at the end? Yeah, Sadie O'sman. Oh, Cab's got. From the Cavs.
Starting point is 01:03:14 Yeah. By the way, look at that video. Am I the only one seeing LeBron in that Laker practice? Do you love it? Oh, my God, so excited. I cannot. I'm not into, like, having tickets for big events. I'll never go to the Oscars.
Starting point is 01:03:30 I'll watch it on TV. I've never done Marty Grau. Like, I don't, I'm not, I've never done, like, even in Vegas on New Year's night. Like, I never went to that. I'm not into it. That's your into it. LeBron's first Laker game. man, that's going to be good.
Starting point is 01:03:46 Holy God, Staples is going to be insane. The first time he walks out, the ovation is going to literally be all-time stuff. I don't even, I never call teams for tickets and I never ask for press passes. I'm asking for it publicly now. Just give me a crappy press pass. I'll sit in the upper deck just to be in Staples for that first game is going to be wild. You know, the add-on to that story, though, Kauai Leonard reports saying, obviously, he wants to come to L.A.
Starting point is 01:04:13 when he's a free agent next summer. Obviously, he's in Toronto. He's signed with the Raptors. How do you think that's going to play out? Do you think that's smart for it? Oh, I think they'll be good for a year. I don't know if I'd roll the dice on Kauai staying. But Toronto, outside of Boston this year,
Starting point is 01:04:27 it'll be the second best Eastern team. I mean, they were the number one seed last year, and Kauai's better than Derozen. So if Kauai is healthy, he's a top five player in the league. In the east, he's not going to face the onslaught of talent every night. No, I think Toronto's the second best team, Philly's third. But what about guys saying that they want to, to play in other cities and they still are tied to one team.
Starting point is 01:04:46 I think players should have more control in sports. I always, Jamie, I always say this. Think about being an athlete. You and I worked really hard. And the harder you and I work in college, and we have longer careers, we get attracted often from better companies. A better company says, oh, Jamie's talented. Let's bring her in.
Starting point is 01:05:05 Or make Colin, maybe we could groom him. For an athlete, they put all that work in. And only the crappy teams get them. them, which usually have bad owners, bad GMs, and marginal coaches. So the minute a player, and they own your rights for years, and the NFL, it's outrageous. But in NBA, they own your rights for like four years. You absolutely move them. If you don't think your owner and your GM are up to your standards, then you leave Cleveland
Starting point is 01:05:30 and you go to Pat Riley and D. Wade with Chris Bosch. That's what you do. All right. Finally, here our last headline, Thunderford. Jeremy Grant says that Russell Westbrook is a great teammate. Here's the backstory. He was asked about the narrative of Westbrook. being a bad teammate in a recent interview.
Starting point is 01:05:45 And this is what he said. That's just ignorant. Russ is a great teammate and a great person. Players obviously want to play with him. I think that's a huge misconception in the media. And I don't know why it's said. He's a great player. And everyone wants to play with great players because we all want to win.
Starting point is 01:06:01 Let me ask you, what the heck is Jeremy Grant supposed to say when he's asked about Westbrook being a good teammate? Why did Kevin Durant's second best player in the league leave him? He's just great to play with. I mean, why would you leave? But why did Paul George stay? Paul George stay because, well, they got a little bit more money. But the second thing is, once the Kauai Leonard rumors came out, he thought, I'm going to go to the Lakers and be the third most popular guy.
Starting point is 01:06:24 And by the way, Lonzo is going to get more impressed than me. And so you got magic running it. Lonzo, LeBron, potentially Kauai Leonard. I think Paul George said, I'd rather be a number two. I'm totally comfortable being number two in this city to Russ. I'm not going to be a number four. I totally get that. Plus, they gave him more money.
Starting point is 01:06:41 I don't hate West Brom. I think he's difficult to play with. I think the numbers bear it out. Even Malcolm Gladwell's talked about this. He's a data guy. So I don't know why I get so much pushback on this. I don't think he's a bad person. The person thing I don't care about.
Starting point is 01:06:53 I don't think he's a bad person at all. He gives the charity. He's a good dude. You know, he's married guy, family guy, works his tail off guy. I like that part of it. He's a ball hog. He's a ball hog, yeah. There you go, Jamie, with the news.
Starting point is 01:07:07 Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Hurd-Lie News. Okay, we do it almost every Wednesday. stockbroker, and I give you advice on the stock you throw my way. Do you buy it? Do you sell it, or do you hold it? By the way,
Starting point is 01:07:22 Joel Clatz around the corner in 10 minutes. Here we go. Buy, sell or hold. Time to Bar! Collin will decide if he'll buy, buy it, sell, or hold. All right, first one, buy seller hold. Sam Darnold, we'll start. Week 1. Okay, let's not hide
Starting point is 01:07:44 the fact. This is one of the worst offensive lines in the league, one of the worst tight-end groups. the league and a very marginal running back group. I don't love their receivers either, but they're better than those three. And Sam Darnold is completing 72% of his throws with an 82 and a half quarterback rating. I got news for you. Well, it's a bunch of underneath routes.
Starting point is 01:08:04 Have you watched the NFL outside of Big Bend? It's an underneath route league. Everybody's throwing underneath. You watch Tom Brady? I mean, even Aaron Rogers doesn't go downtown that much. It's an underneath league. Here's the downside, though. right now Teddy Bridgewater is better
Starting point is 01:08:19 and I wonder if the Jets want to show off Bridgewater to teams around the league and so when somebody gets hurt and they will in September they can move Bridgewater and get a couple draft picks and rebuild that running back
Starting point is 01:08:34 core and that offensive line. So John, I'm just going to wait. Watch week three. I'm going to hold on this. Buy seller hold, Baker Mayfield will start more than seven games this season. Well, by and large, rookie quarterbacks get opportunities. Jamarcus Russell 11 years ago was the last number one pick to not start at least seven games. You're in a division where there's almost some guaranteed losses, like two to the Steelers.
Starting point is 01:09:04 If you look at their schedule, we have an owner in Jimmy Haslam, who has been not only with the Browns, but Tennessee football, kind of discards coaches. whether he fires him or not, and he did retain Hugh Jackson, his opinion's going to be the opinion. Tyrod Taylor's better. In my opinion, for this entire year, Tyrod Taylor's going to be better. But you start looking at that schedule, and they're one and four, and they're coming home. Think about October 7. October 7 is the start of the NBA training camps.
Starting point is 01:09:36 The Indians are out of the playoffs. LeBron's gone, and the city is begging to be owned by, for the first time and a long time, the Browns, October 7, I think Baker Mayfield is the starter. So, John, buy, bye, buy! Baker will start more than seven games. Buy seller hold. All five first round quarterbacks will start at some point this season. In 99, you had five guys' quarterbacks drafted in the first round. Four of them started their rookie season.
Starting point is 01:10:03 I think this really comes down to Lamar Jackson. Regardless of what anybody else said, I've always had the same opinion about Lamar Jackson. He is a project, not a prospect. He's not a guy that should play this year. And I've watched him through three games. He's got 42% completion rate. He's not ready to play in this league. And Flacco, I think, is slightly better than Tyrod Taylor.
Starting point is 01:10:24 Flacco is slightly better than Teddy Bridgewater. And so Flacco is better, and Lamar is worse at this point than the other rookies. So, John, sell, sell! I don't think Lamar Jackson starts. I do think, in November, if they're... Scrapping, there is going to be T-Bow-like chance to start the guy that's two or three in the depth chart. It's coming. By Seller Hold, a quarterback will win offensive rookie of the year.
Starting point is 01:10:52 You know what's interesting about this award? It's bizarre. 51 years, only nine times, has a quarterback won it. And for the record, do you know who I like to win this thing? Nick Chubb, running back Cleveland. I think they're going to lean on him heavy. We're all looking at Darnold. We're all looking at Josh Rose.
Starting point is 01:11:11 We're looking at Josh Allen. Dak Prescott was the only quarterback to win that award over the last five years. So, John, sell, sell. A quarterback will not win offensive rookie of the year. Last one, buy seller hold. Alabama and Clemson will meet in the college football playoff for the fourth straight season. Clemson has the best defensive line in college football since maybe the Miami hurricanes about 15 years ago.
Starting point is 01:11:38 Three NFL players in their D.E. defensive line. Two of them, maybe three first rounders. Alabama's got the best coach system and their best offensive playmaker at quarterback in Nick Saban's career. Washington's good, but doesn't have the overall talent. The Big Ten will beat up on each other. So there's just too much parity at the top between Ohio State, Michigan, State, Michigan, Wisconsin. So John, Buy, bye, bye, Bamma Clemson in the final again, sport getting a little regional. Joel clats around the corner. It's the herd.
Starting point is 01:12:12 Be sure to catch live editions of the herd. Weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific. Drive sober. Everybody knows the risks. People could get hurt arrested. Incur huge legal expenses. Lose a gig. If you think drunk driving's no big deal.
Starting point is 01:12:26 You're wrong. Drive sober or get pulled over. Brought to you by the NHTSA. I don't know what that stands for, but it sounds very official. Jamie's filling in for joy today. Let's bring in the voice of college football. ball. Oh, he just wants to take shots at me.
Starting point is 01:12:39 All day in the halls, just walking up and down. Getting ready to take shots at me. How are you doing, man? I'm doing great. Let's just get elephant in the room. Baker Mayfield. Hey, I'm wearing underwear. Hasn't started a game. This is your guy, by the way. Yeah, you hawk underwear too, which is great.
Starting point is 01:12:55 I wear the Tommy John stuff is good. Why are you getting on him for hawking underwear? First day on the job, not taking my shirt off, grabbing my junk. Here we go. Underwear guy. Doesn't bother you? Come on. This is one of those things. This is the mold on the shower shoes of Newkaloosh in Bull Durham, right? I mean, if he turns out to be a winner, it's colorful. If he turns out to be a loser, it's the Tony Mandraits Sports Illustrated
Starting point is 01:13:17 cover with his shirt off walking around in the training camp. So it will be what it is, depending on how he plays. I happen to think he's going to play well. So you like it. I love it. Yes. You love it. You know what's even better than the underwear ad? His deal impersonating John Dorsey. That was kind of funny. But again, why is everything Look at my impersonation, my documentary, my chest, my abs. You're the backup quarterback. You're the backup quarterback. I mean, first of all, that was somewhat of an internal video.
Starting point is 01:13:46 And that's how you went over the hearts of your teammates. Candidly. Showing, I'm talking about the video of Dorsey. It's kind of funny. Yeah, I mean, it's good. Listen, his teammates are going to love him. His teammates already are starting to love him. And I think what I'm more interested is that you've got this.
Starting point is 01:14:05 there's the picture of Baker with it's funny I mean it's good it's good he's a talented funny kid he's he's he's a kind of guy if the NFL doesn't work he could go be a college football analyst you know he can do that I mean seriously that's like I've already got a peg for a second career I got I just don't like this whole like all these millennials how about you win a job before it's like me I understand that I don't like hit thrusting and look at my abs who's your favorite NBA player LeBron. Okay, so he's a pretty large self-promoter. Who's your favorite baseball player?
Starting point is 01:14:38 Bryce Harper. Are you serious? Bryce Harper. I will refuse to run to first base. Where's my multiple hair dryers, Bryce Harper? All about me, Bryce Harper. He's been in the league. You're serious.
Starting point is 01:14:50 You're going to harp on Baker Mayfield and you just admitted your favorite baseball player is Bryce Harper. Bryce Harper has achieved some unbelievable numbers in the sport so far. If you were worth your salt, you would have said Nolan, Aronado, who's the best baseball player on the face of the planet and doesn't do anything to promote himself out of Colorado's first album I didn't like one bit. Who's his name? Who is the name?
Starting point is 01:15:12 Nolan Aronado. All right. Third baseman for the Colorado Rockies. I just, it's a fascinating deal. He likes a rocky. Ask any baseball person. Ask anybody. Man of Machado, Noel Narano, two best players in the game outside of Mike Trout.
Starting point is 01:15:26 It's true. It's true. Why don't you like Mike Trout? He's not a self-promoter. He's got better numbers than Bryce Harrodot. or if you're all about your numbers, then you should be about Trout. I'm just pointing out the errors in your philosophy. Okay, how about this?
Starting point is 01:15:39 This will agree on this. How big of a loser do you have to be as a coach to say Nick Saban's overrated? Here's my favorite one. Hold on. Here's my favorite one. Go ahead. Well, if you got the best players, well, he's got the best players because he doesn't lose any football games, you meet balls.
Starting point is 01:15:54 And that is exactly what you're supposed to do if you're a college head football coach. Recruit the best players. That's in the job description. The lifeblood of a program is recruiting. So the guy who's going to be the best recruiter is going to be the best coach. I mean, is this not, this is insane. This is insanity. This anonymous shot to Nick Saban.
Starting point is 01:16:14 Nick Saban is putting together the greatest decade of college football in our sports history. And it's not really debatable. It's not even debatable. Since 2008, they have been ranked number one in the AP poll at some point in every season. I didn't say five out of six or six. So every single season. Bobby Bowden, Florida, state's the only thing close to it.
Starting point is 01:16:38 Only think, 14 years finishing in the top four in the final eight people. It's Bobby Bowden 2. Nick won. What he's doing is incredible. He's been there in the last 10 seasons since 08, okay? In the last 10 seasons, five national championships,
Starting point is 01:16:51 and he's 66 and 4 at Bryant Denny. He's won more national championships than he has home losses. So give me a break about this overrated crap. And if you want to throw out allegations of, cheating? Bring the facts. Absolutely. Where are the evidence? By the way, Ole Miss cheated, we caught him. Okay, then great. When Oklahoma cheated years ago, we caught him.
Starting point is 01:17:10 Auburn, USC. We've had at these big programs. Bring the evidence. We've had evidence. And you get busted. You either show it to me or I don't want to. Or go away. Or just go away. Stop talking. I couldn't agree more. Let me go back to another football thing because of Mr. Flash here, Mr. Abs, Mr. in front of a Rolls-Royce guy. Doug Peterson wins a Super Bowl. He writes a book.
Starting point is 01:17:31 Belichick's not writing books. Sean, Payton's not writing books. You're writing a book. You said it earlier. I mean, you said, I heard you. I listen. I listen all the time. Earlier, you were pretty strong.
Starting point is 01:17:42 This is what you said. You know who's on my show Friday? Doug Peterson. Your first thing I'm going to say, oh, you know, win a Super Bowl. I got a book now. I got a book. Belichick doesn't have a book.
Starting point is 01:17:56 Does Andy Reid have a book? Yeah. By the way, on Amazon right now or wherever you get your books, Colin Coward has got a book. Raw. Yeah. After 10 years of grinding in this damn profession, I wrote a brilliant New York Times bestseller. After 10 years. Oh, I moved networks. I got a book.
Starting point is 01:18:18 You're a jerk. Why don't even bring you on the show? By the way, it's a good book. I've read it. It's a good book. Go buy it. Okay. Underrated, overrated coaches. Got a book. Here's the underrated coaches. My underrated coaches, they don't have got a book. Okay, here they are. This was voted on by who? anonymously other college football coaches. So here are the underrated coaches.
Starting point is 01:18:39 Okay, here's my thing on the underrated coaches. Shaw Peterson, Dan Mullen, Fitzgerald, Kyle Whittingham. First of all, I agree with all of them. Sure. There's a guy missing here. Okay, which one? Paul Christ. I couldn't agree more.
Starting point is 01:18:51 Paul, Chris, at Wisconsin is a great coach and severely underrated, and I'll add one more who gets overlooked, and you might have even overlooked him. Mark Dantoneo in Michigan State. He's very grumpy. I don't care. That doesn't. That doesn't make it.
Starting point is 01:19:05 He's just so brittle all the time. Paul Chris literally, I can say this. I think that's the best coaching staff in America. Sabin's the best coach. Sabin's got 34 NFL guys on that roster. Wisconsin's got six, maybe eight. I believe that this list should be comprised of coaches that get more out of their talent than anybody else does. Now, in order to do that, quite frankly, you can't be a great recruiter, right? Because you're not going to get more out of the number one recruiting class in the country other than winning a national championship, right? I mean, so it's hard to put those guys who are constantly in the top five in recruiting on this list. That's why I look at the Wittingham's of the world and the David Shaz of the world and you say, yeah, I get that. But Paul Chris constantly outperforms his recruiting classes. They do it all the time.
Starting point is 01:19:57 His philosophy is sound. I know it's not a great division, but look at what they've got and what they've built. That's an incredible program in Wisconsin. I love what Michigan State has done under Mark Dan Antonio. He's so grumpy. The only thing I would say about the list that was provided, David Shaw, Chris Peterson, I feel like they get their due. Yeah, no, no, no.
Starting point is 01:20:16 Everybody knows Chris Peterson's top three in the sport. No doubt. And Shaw's probably top six or seven. Yeah, nobody thinks they're. underrated guys. This is really funny because I've had two coaches in the last year say I think James Franklin's overrated and I always say he won it Vanderbilt. Yeah. And then he took over that mess at Penn State. And if nothing else, the guy hires great coaches, which is a great Joe Moorhead is a great guy now at Mississippi State. And we'll see how he does now James Franklin
Starting point is 01:20:43 without Joe Moorhead. What do you make of this list? Okay. So the overrated coaching list, Willie Taggart, James Franklin, Kirk Ferrence, Lane Kiffin. Um, they When I see a list like this that is anonymous, I feel like they should change the title from most overrated coaches in college football to coach I'm most jealous of in college football. Because Lane Kiffin, people don't like the press that he gets and the attention that he gets.
Starting point is 01:21:07 Kirk Farrant's people are jealous that he's the most tenured and his salary. People don't like James Franklin because he comes in and ruffles the feathers and wins at a place like Vandy where he's not supposed to and then cleans it up at Penn State and Willie Tiger because maybe they're thinking, well, that's my dream job. Why did he get it after a so-so year at Oregon?
Starting point is 01:21:26 That's what they think. This is a jealousy list. It's not an overrated list. That's my whole problem with this. Joel Clat, voice of college football. Don't have a book. Listen, so hold on. So what's the first big game you do?
Starting point is 01:21:40 You do a bunch of Oklahoma stuff, don't you? FAU, Oklahoma, week one. And then we'll do UCLA, Oklahoma, but then USC Texas in Austin on week three. That'll be a big one. because USC is going to be thrown right into the fire, potentially with a freshman quarterback and J.T. Daniels. Week two, they're at Stanford.
Starting point is 01:21:56 So they're back-to-back road games at Stanford, then at Texas. Oh, very good defenses in Texas, in particular with Todd Orlando as a defense coordinator. If they get swept in both those games, Lynn Swan, the athletic director, is going to get major pressure from USC boosters. They have to win one of those two, even with a freshman quarterback. You're not wrong. Even though I disagree, you're not wrong. I would disagree with that sentiment.
Starting point is 01:22:20 from the fan base and from the athletic department. I mean, think about it. Now, this guy came in and he brought, speaking of Clay Hilton, he brought structure, he won a Rose Bowl and a Pac-12 championship, which they haven't done in the previous four or five years. Joel Clatt, he didn't got a book. I don't got a book.
Starting point is 01:22:37 Collins got a book. Everybody's got a book. This is the herd, wherever you may be in, however you may be listening. our number three live in Los Angeles, Iheart Radio, Fox Sports Radio and FS1. Jamie Maggio is joining us today. Joy Taylor's on vacation, and Jamie is here and grew up in Long Island. On Long Island. Longtime New York Giants fan. Yes. And have worked around the country. So we love having her here at FS1. This is great. Good to have you here today.
Starting point is 01:23:15 Thank you for having me. Are you doing it tomorrow as well? I think so. If you'll have me back, I'll see how I did today. Absolutely. I need a buffer between Goulet, so it's nice to have a pleasant buffer. So coming up in 15 minutes, Bucky Brooks, one of my favorite guys, played, drafted, scouted, now works at the NFL, writes books. He's coming up.
Starting point is 01:23:33 Also, best for last. We found Tom Brady's absolute worst nightmare. But the Browns are all over my TV. I cannot get rid of them, so I'm starting there. You watch Hard Knocks? episode what was it three do you notice in the last two episodes all they talk about
Starting point is 01:23:50 how excited they get about dysfunctional wide receivers I mean last night it's all about Des Bryant rolls into the building oh my God Des Bryant's in the building episode two it was Josh Gordon Josh Gordon the last time he was good Eddie Lacey was rookie of the year
Starting point is 01:24:09 he's played 10 10 games in four years He's in three years, he's played five games. Josh Gordon. Here's Hugh Jackson reacting to Josh Gordon, just landing a plane in Cleveland. This is the head coach of a losing football team that's won a game in two years. The bird has landed. The bird is here.
Starting point is 01:24:31 Not in here, though. Not in here. But the bird's here. Has it been working out? Yeah. Yeah, Todd Haley from a winning culture, Steelers. on the Arizona staff that won a Super Bowl, head coach in Kansas City got him to the playoffs.
Starting point is 01:24:47 Todd Haley looks really good in this series. He's like, who cares? Is he working out? Hugh Jackson's like, oh, the Eagle has landed. The last time Josh Gordon was good. Eddie Lacey was the rookie of the year. Peyton Manning was the best quarterback in the league. Tony Gonzalez now at our network made a Pro Bowl
Starting point is 01:25:05 and 7 of 11 offensive all pros have retired. That's Josh Gordon's last full season. By the way, Jarvis Landry got into a fight. I like him as a player, but he's all over the series. General manager John Dorsey yesterday, episode three, is talking to scouts about wide receivers. I mean, they're talking about Antonio Callaway, another kid. He's all over it. Good God, folks.
Starting point is 01:25:27 Avoid dumb guys. This is why they're the Browns. They're just fascinating. Not only with receivers, I mean, the best receiving cores don't win Super Bowls, but dysfunctional wide receivers who have told you for years what they are. I mean, God, you think New England? You know what New England's been for the last 15 years? There are times they've had week-wide receivers, below-average running backs,
Starting point is 01:25:51 not great at lineback. They're always good on the offensive line. New England's always good on the offensive line. That's why they're not on hard knocks. They don't talk a lot. Oh, my God, Josh Gordon's in town. Des Bryant's at the building. And I'll tell you something.
Starting point is 01:26:08 The guy that looks really good in this series is not the head coach. it's Todd Haley, the grown-up, who just came from, maybe you've heard of them, the winningest culture in the division, the Pittsburgh Steelers, who when he was a head coach, actually won games unlike Hugh, who was on that Arizona staff that played in the Super Bowl. This entire series, Todd Haley's come across, I admit, as really intense and grumpy, but Sabin's intense and grumpy, and Belichick's intense and grumpy, and Popovich is intense and grumpy. Successful peoples are really intense and they sometimes are a little grumpy because people don't live up to standards and and care about the wrong things in life and in football. Let me shift gears to this. I want you to think for a second about a number. That number is 21, a two and then a one. 21.
Starting point is 01:27:09 Lamar Jackson is 21 years old. Sam Darnold is 21 years old. Josh Rosen, speaking to Arizona, Arizona Cardinals, 21. For the record, none of them, none of them will turn 22 years old during the season. They're young, 21-year-olds. 21-year-olds generally in society get entry-level jobs, sometimes unpaid internships. 21 years old, you're a senior in college this Friday. You're going to boogies, $5 all you can drink beers.
Starting point is 01:27:53 That's appropriate for a 21-year-old. In America, rental car companies would not allow Sam Darnold, Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson, to rent a car. Car rental companies would say, we don't trust Sam Darnold to get into a car, sit in a nice seat, GPS, put on a seatbelt, and drive without swerving into people.
Starting point is 01:28:17 In America, our government, when Sam Darnold first came into this league a couple months ago, Sam was 20. Our government would not allow Sam Darnold to walk into a convenience store and buy a beer. They wouldn't allow it.
Starting point is 01:28:33 The government thinks, no, he's not responsible enough to have some hops and barley after dinner. 21 years old. They will now all take over billion-dollar franchises. Go back to 2009. Only two quarterbacks ever at that time had started at 21 years old and qualified as starters. Bernie Cozar and Drew Bledsoe. Folks, we don't let them buy beer right before 21. They can't rent a car at 21. We have age limitations and restrictions all over America.
Starting point is 01:29:14 Go back to your 21st birthday. What were you doing at 21? I was a mess. And we're going to hand these guys, especially Darnold and Josh Allen, they're going to start week one. There's a real chance they'll start week one. So let's just do this. They're kids.
Starting point is 01:29:38 They're kids. I'm going to tell you, and I think two of them have a chance to start week one, Sam. Darnel. Sam Darnold, this year if he starts, oh, it's going to be bumpy. It's going to be choppy, because I watched every snap in college. He's going to throw for 17 touchdowns, and he's going to have 14 interceptions, and he's going to have seven fumbles, and his passer rating is going to be 84.5. And oh, by the way, Josh Allen and Buffalo's got a little better arm, and I think they
Starting point is 01:30:07 have slightly better receivers. He'll complete 60% of his throws. He'll have 19 touchdowns and 17 interceptions. passer rating could be even lower because he'll throw the deep ball a little more, 79.5%. The last time I had a 21-year-old on my staff here, he fetched me coffee and we didn't pay him. I can't imagine giving him a $2.9 billion dollar franchise in America's biggest city with the media, which is the most relentless, largest, smartest, most in-tuned sports-aware media in the country chirping at him. Lamar, Josh, Darnold.
Starting point is 01:30:54 They're 21. Bucky Brooks around the corner. It's Wednesday, right? Football Fox tomorrow. Don't we have a Fox game tomorrow? Baker Mayfield? That's very. Eagles, Browns?
Starting point is 01:31:07 Oh, boy. We got the chatty team in Baker Mayfield. It's going to be the chatty bowl. When you're ready for a new car, Hyundai's on your team. Shopper Assurance program, transparent pricing, flexible test drive, streamline, purchasing, HyundaiUSA.com slash shopper assurance. played in the NFL for a lot of different teams.
Starting point is 01:31:23 Packers, Jag, Chiefs, Bill's, Raiders, former NFL scout with the Panthers, helped build up the Seahawks. Bucky Brooks, NFL network analyst, Moved the Sticks podcast with Daniel Jeremiah, who's also a really smart guy. He's a smart guy. A couple of smart guys on that podcast.
Starting point is 01:31:40 So, listen, I was saying this. Yesterday, you text me during the show. I was very clear what I said going into the draft. I felt that Rosen, Darnold, and Baker, were going to struggle, but they were ready to play. I felt that Josh Allen and Lamar were projects. Now, it looks like Allen's gotten some good coaching, but I felt like, let's give him a year. Let's, let's.
Starting point is 01:32:01 Now, to this point, I think I've missed on my, I've missed on Josh Allen, who looks better than I think. You missed already's preseason. I know, but he looks pretty good. But on Lamar, I'm getting, I'm hearing stuff now, well, you can't criticize him because he was. Like, man, to me, if you get drafted in the first. first round, you get drafted in the first round, I want you to play. And I know this, the owner wants you to play. You know how owners are? They're crazy. They're billionaires. They don't, first round picks. By week four, if the Browns are o' and three, Jimmy Haslam's going to be
Starting point is 01:32:34 calling up you. I don't care. Blow the plan out. So why did Lamar, why can't I criticize Lamar and go, he's 42 percent? He's struggling. He's overwhelmed. Oh, you can criticize him. You can criticize him. I think what we have to understand, draft grades and where people are selected, there's a level of expectation that goes. When you take someone in the top 10, for instance, you've talked about Baker Mayfield being number one overall, and the expectation the standard is different. When you take somebody in the top 10, the expectation is that guy is going to be the best at his position within the first two to three years of his career. He's going to be a top three or top four player at his position. When you talk about a first rounder,
Starting point is 01:33:12 first round is a reserve for immediate starters, impact players, guys that are going to be your difference makers to go make up the core of your squad. Now, the difference with quarterbacks, the CBA has made it where if there's a quarterback that maybe you view as a second rounder, you take him at the bottom of the first round because you have the advantage of getting the fifth year option on the deal. So when you see a guy like Teddy Bridgewater was the last pick of the first round when he came out, it's because teams won't cost certainty and they won't player control. The fifth year option allows you to retain them.
Starting point is 01:33:48 work on a deal that kind of is at your terms, your discretion. So where as a Russell Wilson and the third or a DAC and the fourth, by the fourth year, you've got to pay up. You got to pay up. You got to pay up. Think about Derek Carr. Derek Carr just signed that big deal because he was a second round pick at the end of his deal. His deal is only four years. So now you got to pay him market value to retain him.
Starting point is 01:34:11 Whereas if you have him on a fifth year option, there's a little protection. It's very similar to what the Oakland Raiders are doing with Khalil Mack. So you and I actually agree, yes, yes. It's actually you and I agree on Lamar. He's a second to third round quarterback. Yeah, he was graded probably in most teams that liked him. He probably was graded at a second round level, meaning he's not an immediate starter,
Starting point is 01:34:32 but in time he can be an eventual starter in the league. The Baltimore Ravens may have, they probably viewed him as such. But didn't think they'd have a chance to get him. That's why they went and got him. They got him at the bottom because they wanted to make sure they got him, and they also wanted to add a protection of having the fifth year option on him. Now, you're a smart guy. You know, it is interesting about, I said this earlier.
Starting point is 01:34:53 Lamar's 21, Rosen, 21, Darnal, 21. Okay, and they're young 21. They don't turn 22 during the season. The only guys, there was Drew Bledsoe and Bernie Cozar started young. By and large, we never asked 21-year-olds. Guys are leaving college earlier. They're not red-shirting. Like, should we maybe take a deep breath and go,
Starting point is 01:35:14 we do not allow Sam Darnold when he arrived at the Jets for, to buy legally a beer in America and none of them can rent a car. Like if Lamar went to Enterprise, they'd say, let's see your ID. Come back in four years. Why are we, why is it me or is everybody getting younger at quarterback? Oh, they're younger, but look, the hot take is always going to be the hot take. When you come into the league, we can sit there and talk about leading up to the draft. They're a project.
Starting point is 01:35:41 They need times. You've got to be patient with them in a couple years. As soon as they step into the locker room, particularly as a first round, It doesn't really matter if their first round pick. Whenever they step onto the field, the expectation is they're going to be compared to Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Ben Rothesburg, and Phillip Rivers, guys that have done it for a long time. What you're getting now with the younger quarterbacks, you better make sure that your play caller can meet them halfway.
Starting point is 01:36:06 So now the trend in the league is to get a play caller that is able to look at what they did in college and immediately put it into the offense so they can have success as a young player. And then with each year, it goes as an evolution from what they did in college to now need you to be able to do what we want to do by year three. We saw that with Jared Goff and how Sean McVeigh has taken him and kind of put him in a situation to succeed. We saw it in Carson Wentz. Everyone loves Carson Wentz. But the Philadelphia Eagles ran more RPO's than any other team in the league. Some of that is from his offense in North Dakota State. He did some of those things while also doing pro stuff.
Starting point is 01:36:44 you have to find a way to help your young quarterbacks be successful so they can have a chance to develop into the guys that you think they may be down the road. By the way, I'm watching this hard knocks thing, and Hugh Jackson's very pro player, you know, he's getting all worked up over Des and, oh, Josh Gordon landed at the airport, and that guy hasn't been good since Eddie Lacey won rookie of the year. You're wrong on that, though. You're wrong on that with Josh Gordon. Josh Gordon came off the streets last year, off the streets hadn't played in two years.
Starting point is 01:37:13 first game he almost has a hundred-yard game averages 18 yards a catch the reason everyone is Cleveland is willing to hang on him is because he's a superstar talent if he wasn't that talented people would have moved on because he has talent that could be comparable to Tio and Calvin Johnson and all those guys that's why they're hanging on he is a uniquely talented guy he didn't really play in college but this whole hard knocks all they're talking about to wide receivers and and I watched Todd Haley who comes from the winning culture of Pittsburgh you always bang Pittsburgh's culture. You banged back Tomlin.
Starting point is 01:37:45 He's Lucy Goosey compared to Belichette. They win games. Yeah, they do. So how come Haley looks impressive to me? Hugh looks like, oh my God, let's talk wide receivers. So here's what it is when you're a head coach. When you're the head coach, you don't have to be all things to all people. So Hugh Jackson can be player friendly if he has some people up under him that are bad
Starting point is 01:38:07 cops. So Hugh Jackson gets to be the good cop. Greg Williams, Todd Haley get to be the bad cop. And ultimately, he has the gavel. He can rein them back in when they get kind of too far on the other side. You need to have balance, and you need to hire people that aren't necessarily like you to get the ship going in the right direction. Hard knocks has been very enlightening in terms of letting people know who Todd Haley is because he had a bad rap when he was at Kansas City. He won games.
Starting point is 01:38:33 He's been a really good offensive coordinator. He's never got another bite of the apple as a head coach despite his success in Kansas City. and some of that is due to his personality. You talk about guys being grumpy. He's a little grumpy. He's a little grumpy. But he does have and make some really good points when he talks about we need to be a little harder on the players. We need to make sure they're in condition.
Starting point is 01:38:54 We need to make sure they understand how hard it is to win. Put him through enough adversity so when we get into those tough times of the year, they can go through it. Todd Haley's been a good addition. I think Hugh, as long as he continues to listen and kind of lean on his perspective, I think the Browns will head in the right direction. By the way, all I'm hearing, I line it up, basketball's pro player. I love the NBA. Outside of the NFL is my favorite sport.
Starting point is 01:39:21 It's very pro player always has been. Players can be political. Players can talk. Players, they get endorsements. It doesn't bother. Football's kind of different. It's kind of a community. It's a huddle.
Starting point is 01:39:30 We all listen to the quarterback, what the quarterback says. On this count, we snap it. If one guy moves a finger, we all step back five yards as a penalty. I'm not a big fan of chatty. locker rooms. And by the way, I'm from the Pacific Northwest. When the Seahawks won, they got political. They got chattie. Everybody talked about Russell Wilson. They got
Starting point is 01:39:46 cocky. And I'm like, take a deep breath. Like, don't puff the chest. I'm watching Philadelphia. The coach has a book. The players are all talking. Lane Johnson's call. They put billboards up in New England, taunting the Patriots. And Philadelphia feel a little like
Starting point is 01:40:03 Seattle. A little cocky after third trip to the Super Bowl, he finally win one. I mean, they won, though. That's the thing. They won and they won when not many of us picked them to win. We thought when they were going against the superpower and the New England Patriots, right this end, Tom Brady's going to win another one.
Starting point is 01:40:20 They're the greatest. It's the biggest dynasty that we've ever seen. The thing about Philadelphia is, as long as you're a coach and you're true to who you are, it doesn't affect anything. Having played with Doug Peterson in Green Bay, you did. Having watched him, talk to him, look, this is who he is. He's aggressive to a fault.
Starting point is 01:40:37 He believes in his players. And very similar to how Coach Holmgren was, look, he just wants guys to be professionals. As long as their pros, when they show up, they do what they're supposed to do, their guys aren't getting in trouble, they're playing at a high level, I'm fine with it. I think the thing that he will learn and the rest of the team will learn, it is hard being the champion. It is hard having the crown. It is hard facing everybody.
Starting point is 01:41:01 And that preseason game against the Patriots was kind of telling. The Patriots came after them. The Patriots kind of brought their A game. I think Bill Belichick and the Patriots were trying to send the message like, okay, you got us. This is what it's like to be a champion. We're going to come after you. It will be interesting to see how the Philadelphia Eagles handle all comers because it's a lot harder being to hunted than being a hunter. Jerry Jones came out.
Starting point is 01:41:25 He has a weekly radio show, which most owners don't have. And so Jerry will say something invariably every week or other week that his coaches have to answer to. I'm not a big fan of that. although I do think he's an amazing businessman. Al Davis had some of this. Is it good for football when your coaches on Wednesday are answering for your owner's comments on Tuesday on local radio? In most instances, it's not good.
Starting point is 01:41:54 And in Jerry's case, I can't say that it's a really good thing for Jason Garrett to have to answer these things. But if you go back and you think about what Jerry Jones is from the time he took over to Cowboys, he is always admired and wanted to be like Al Davis. The difference is Al Davis was an accomplished coach, an accomplished general manager, an accomplished football man before he was an owner. He was a football man.
Starting point is 01:42:18 So before he became an owner, he had some pelts on the wall based on what he did as a coach and really with the Raiders, with the chargers, and all the other stuff. Having played in Oakland when Mr. Davis was alive, look Thursdays, Mr. Davis is out there. He's in the golf cart. Every Thursday. every Thursday, and he will call you over. What are you doing in this defense, those things? He had that kind of football depth and perspective.
Starting point is 01:42:43 Now, the detriment was Mr. Davis would inject himself into the game, playing. Coaches had to coach around some of his suggestions. You had to be able to manage that relationship. I don't know if that relationship is like that in Dallas, but it seems like he's heavy-handed. And even though he stepped back, and he has some nice football mind. Look, Will McLeigh is a great evaluator. He has some guys that are under him that can do a really good job.
Starting point is 01:43:07 He has to know when to kind of step back and let his coaches and his personnel people do their job and kind of stay in his life. Do we have the Jerry Jones bite? Because he had a comment about Dak Prescott. And let me just play the bite from Jerry Jones. We put in offense, a compliment what he did at Mississippi State. All of those things are going to make him a better quarterback. We've done what we should be doing, and that's put an offense together that is friendly to him. And the pushback was, are you saying basically that you have to surround him with the right elements?
Starting point is 01:43:44 To that, I would say, so what? That's what everybody's doing. So you don't think that every coach in this league is trying to figure out in Buffalo what makes Josh Allen better. He's got a cannon. Let's got a guy that can go deep. That's what everybody does. Like, that's what you should be doing. So that's the thing.
Starting point is 01:43:59 When you have your franchise quarterback, if you're a good coach, a good play caller, it's a cooperation. It is always a back and forth. What do you like? What don't you like? What allows you to play at your best? How can you play fast? Do we need to do some of the things that you did in college? Are there some concepts that fit your eye better?
Starting point is 01:44:17 When Doug Peterson helped Nick Foles find his game is because he went back and looked at tape from 2013 when he played under Chip Kelly and he had the 27 and two touchdown to interception ratio. He took their week off and basically took what they did back then when he played at that level, and that's all they did in the playoffs, which is why Nick Foles looked like a different player. Great teams understand it is all about the quarterback I'm a build around him. The first two years, Dak was in the league. He was basically running Tony Romo's offense. And to his credit, he did a really good job. This year in the preseason, we can say preseason, it doesn't count, but it does matter.
Starting point is 01:44:55 He's looked like a little different quarterback. The ball is coming out. The ball is getting to the playmakers and all the wire receivers that we laughed at, they're making plays. I think there is some value to putting Dak, Prescott, and an offense that allows him to play to his strengths. I think he's going to have an outstanding year this year, and I know I might be in the minority when I say that. Okay, I'm going to play a game with you. I think Teddy Bridgewater today is better than Sam Darnold, but I do think you could trade him and get something.
Starting point is 01:45:20 Okay, so I'm just going to say this. I'll name a quarterback. I want you are a player and a scout. I'm going to name a quarterback in the league because I think Teddy's better in about seven of them that I can name. You tell me if Teddy's better. So I'll ask you the quarterback
Starting point is 01:45:33 and you say Teddy or the other guy. Andy Dalton. Teddy. Thank you. Ryan Tannehill. Teddy. Blake Bortles. Teddy.
Starting point is 01:45:41 No, this is what I would say. This is okay. Hold on. Now it gets a little closer. Marioota. See, there you go, though. It's close. Very close.
Starting point is 01:45:50 It's very close. Because then it depends on the system. If you're Tennessee, you're all in on Marcus Mario. you're trying to elevate him. But it's close. Case Keenham. He's better than Case Keenham.
Starting point is 01:45:59 Not close. I know. This is why I said yesterday. I got pushback. I'm like, everybody. Nice story. That's why Mike Zimmer and those guys. Okay.
Starting point is 01:46:06 How about this? James Winston. Man, you can make the case that Teddy would be a better fit in Tampa right now. I would. Just the leadership. Does the maturity matter? The stability. Everybody will tell you.
Starting point is 01:46:17 Like, having known Teddy since he was in high school. You did? Yes, because working in Nike, doing all those things, the opening or whatever. Look, Teddy Bridgewater. basically ran as high school offense. Call plays, directed people, all those things. When you talk to him, look, he's a football savant. He is a great kid, a great football mind.
Starting point is 01:46:35 I'm excited to see him get an opportunity to play. The one thing that I wonder, people have talked about, hey, they should just trade him. I just don't know right now. The musical chairs are all filled up. The Jets would be in a better situation to just hold on to him, just kind of wait and see what plays out. And then at the end of the year,
Starting point is 01:46:53 if he's not traded during the year, see what you can get. You may get a compensatory pick coming back if he signed somewhere for major money. Okay, let's keep doing this game because I agree with him all of them. And I said Mario, I think Mario a little bigger, a little bigger athlete.
Starting point is 01:47:08 A little bit more mobility. You can do a little more with Marcus than you can. Okay, so here's Alex Smith. Now, Alex Smith right now is a better, Alex Smith is a good player in my mind. Eli Manning. Oh, I think the Giants could take Teddy Bridge Water and he could usher into new air for Pat Sherman.
Starting point is 01:47:25 For sure. Okay. Here's another one of my ear, Joe Flacco. See, now, all the people in Baltimore think I hate Joe Flacco. They think I hate Joe Flacco. I say it's a push, but it's leaning towards Teddy Bridgewater. I would lean to Flacco because of the – He has a bigger arm.
Starting point is 01:47:42 Well, and it's a north. It's a northern team. You're playing Windy Stadium. And he's outside. But if it was Arizona? Oh, yeah. I'd take Teddy Bridgewater. Yes.
Starting point is 01:47:51 So the thing that – he was a Pro Bowl quarterback and say what you want to about the Pro Bowl, he's also led his team to playoff wins. And I know this is a time where we kind of scout using fantasy numbers, how many yards they go. He understands how to play winning football. Right environment, right team, he can win games. Now, we talk about trucks and trailers.
Starting point is 01:48:09 Is he a your truck? No, but he's a nice trailer. He can get you to the winner circle. I think the Alex Smith comparison is a good one because whatever you think about Alex Smith, I think you probably feel the same way about Teddy Bridgewater. you have to have the right team. You have to be okay taking singles and doubles. He's not going to while you like Pat Mahomes,
Starting point is 01:48:28 but you can win a lot of games with him. Okay, we got one more. This is fun. Because I agree with you across the board, except Flacko. I take Joe in a Northern Division. All right. This is the big one.
Starting point is 01:48:39 Because this is one I... Oh, guys. All right, do we have a drum roll? Dak Prescott. I would take Dak over Teddy. But I think Teddy could win just as many games. in Dallas. But I would take Dak. I think Dak. I think Dak is a really, really good quarterback. And a lot of people knocked him. When he came out that year, I said he was a second
Starting point is 01:49:02 round talent. I compared him to Steve McNair when he was coming out, big, rugged playmaker and everything. And I've had a ton of scouts and directors that went through the Mississippi. He said, look, man, this dude has all the stuff. He checks off all the boxes from an intangible standpoint. I'm excited this year to see what he does in an offense that's tailored for him. He needs Zeke Elliott behind him. But I think this dude is going to be a really, really. good player. Yeah, Kevin Sumlin. I saw Kevin Sumlin, he was like, yeah, I made a mistake on deck. Oh, he turned him down?
Starting point is 01:49:29 He's like, he goes, he goes, I just made a big mistake. He goes, he's smart, and you start talking to people around him in Mississippi State was like, man, this kid is good. And that stuff matters. And he had a bad old line in Mississippi State. He had a bad line. And the reason he dropped really, there was an incident that came out right before
Starting point is 01:49:47 the draft that dropped him. But when it comes to intangibles and all those things, sometimes you weigh the intangibles over the physical ability because that stuff matters more in a pro locker room. We really agree a lot. I know. Is that scared? They might be scared.
Starting point is 01:50:00 Because the reason I take Dak over, Teddy, is really physicality. My audience makes fun of me nonstop when I say this. Dak is trunkier. He's thicker. Yeah, I mean, bottom line. He ran for, what, 12, 300 yards in the SEC? Like, you have to be a big body dude to kind of handle that. You can't just kind of take all those hits.
Starting point is 01:50:17 Bucky Brooks, drum roll even. Good stuff, my man. All right, thanks. All right. Let's go to Jamie with the news. No, no, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. All right, well, we should have had Jalen Ramsey in the studio for that last quarterback conversation, because as we know, he broke it down expertly, his quarterback analysis.
Starting point is 01:50:37 Here's what he said about Ben Rafflesberger. He said, I think he's decent at best. Oh, good Lord. He just slings it, and his receivers go get it. He has a strong arm, but he ain't all that. I played him twice last year, and he really disappointed me. Well, this is Big Ben's response. The awesome thing about this country we live in, everyone's entitled to their opinion.
Starting point is 01:50:57 I think he's a fantastic football player. And I think we play him at some point. And, you know, they got the best of us last year. So I guess he has the right to say whatever he wants. Look, that's maturity right there. Didn't fire back? Just, come on, Ben can play. Nuff said.
Starting point is 01:51:11 Ben can play. Ben's prime years ended about two years ago. He's, there's been some, you can see he's devolved a little. little bit. He's not quite as efficient. But in his prime, Cam Newton's the only thing that's ever in my lifetime look quite like that physically as a quarterback. I mean, he was so good in his prime. But where is this guy's respect? Jalen Ramsey won a playoff game. Big Ben has won two Super Bowl. Well, you know, in media, we ask athletes and when they give us responses, we need more than a response. Yeah, so I'm like, I'm never going to beat up on a guy too bad for giving me a response that gave me a
Starting point is 01:51:47 segment. It's a good segment. He had a lot of opinions. A lot of opinions. Yes. I don't know how accurate they were. Next up, Adrian Peterson signed a deal with the Washington Redskins on Monday. That got some chatter going that maybe he's a little washed up. Adrian Peterson's response was this. He said it shows me people don't really know about football. I just brush it off. And I continue to work because at the end of the day, I control my output.
Starting point is 01:52:09 I knew an opportunity would present itself. I know that I'll be able to contribute in a big way in the run game. Run game isn't what it is or what it used to be. I said this yesterday in a meeting. I said he's the most overrated superstar in the history of the league. And I was literally, people threw stuff at me. I might throw something at you. He fumbled a ton.
Starting point is 01:52:28 He was not a great practice player. He didn't want to block. He was an average receiver. He was a really great downhill angry runner for about five years. But I never thought he was good in the room. I thought he fumbled too much. Didn't want to block. Didn't want to practice.
Starting point is 01:52:43 It's funny you say angry runner. You didn't want to throw the ball to him. He wasn't a catcher. I covered the NFL for Fox for a few years, and a coach told me one time, Adrian Peterson runs like he's mad at somebody. Now, I know he's 33 years old, and he's only played 13 games the last two seasons, but you put that man on the field with something to prove, and I'm interested to see what he does.
Starting point is 01:53:04 Washington needs him. They were a mess last year with injuries. All right, you ready for the last one? A little comic relief here, Colin. We're going to have fun with this one. Marshawn Lynch was playing in a golf tournament, charity golf tournament held by Clay Thompson up in the Bay Area, and Marshawn is a god-awful golfer.
Starting point is 01:53:20 Just a hack, literally didn't connect on some of those swings. But imagine if he got a piece of it and went the right direction, it would be pretty well-hit ball. That was, let me see. Pretty bad. It's a beautiful course, but, oh, Lordy, that is bad. So Clay Thompson and Marshawn were actually on the same team, and Clay ended up winning the tournament tied for first place.
Starting point is 01:53:41 How does that work? They had the best golfing back court of all time. Clay Thompson and Steph Curry. Jamie with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Herd Lide News. Want to know what Tom Brady's worst nightmare is?
Starting point is 01:53:56 We have it for you next in Best for Last. Want more Herd? The Herd streams 24 hours a day, seven days a week, within the IHeart Radio app. Search Herd to listen live or on demand whenever you'd like. Don't miss the Big Three championship Friday on Fox. Corey McGettie, Chris Anderson, and Power take on Drew. Gooden and Three's company on the half court in Brooklyn to battle for the Julius Irving championship trophy. Catch all the action starting at 8 Eastern on Fox or stream it live on the Fox Sports app.
Starting point is 01:54:28 Corey McGettie was the MVP of the league. He was second scoring and second and assist. Kobe Bryant's people have said he's not playing in the big three, although there was like a leak a couple days ago. People said they'd like to see him play. They're getting 16, 17,000 people in the arena. You come in, there's multiple games. It's been a lot of fun. It reminds me of the UFC where there was a lot of doubters and all of a sudden two or three years in, you're like, a lot of people are showing up to these events. It works. All right, it is time for best for last. After almost three hours, Colin apparently hasn't gotten to the point yet. Quit holding out on us, cowherd. It's the best for last. A lot of times on this show, Jamie. I talk about cultures matter. And a culture really
Starting point is 01:55:14 clicks when the coach or the GM and the quarterback all see the world the same way. Greg Popovich and Duncan saw the world the same way. Sometimes you have a coach who sees the world here and your star sees it differently. You want that perfect alignment. And one of the reasons to me New England has worked is because Bob Kraft is very smart. Belichick tends to be an early adapter. And Tom Brady similarly is always evolving and looking for an edge. So they're all culturally aligned on how they see the world.
Starting point is 01:55:47 And just to give you a sense of that, here's how Tom Brady sees fitness in Tom versus Time, the documentary. Everyone's educated of why, you know, lifting weights is or, you know, yoga or things like that are good. But you've got to balance those out with another area. Oh, you're getting in there today. I've seen as I've gotten older. I've actually improved.
Starting point is 01:56:12 I'm more durable now. than what I was. And everyone says that's the exact opposite of the way that it should be. But I'm doing it different the way than everyone else is doing it. So again, adapting, evolving. This is why this culture works. Belichick's an adapter. His star player is an adapter.
Starting point is 01:56:34 Now, Cleveland's culture is slightly different, where you've got the owners thinking this way, a new coach that way. this is how the Cleveland Browns attack fitness. This is their 67-year-old offensive line coach Bob Wiley. World War I, World War II, all those guys that fought in that war, right? They did push-ups, jumping jacks, sit-ups, climbed the rope, and ran. But none of this fancy, okay? Right?
Starting point is 01:57:04 And they won two World Wars. Two World Wars by doing jumping jacks, push-ups and sit-ups. Two world wars. You think they were worried when they were? running across Normandy about stretching? Are you kidding me? Huh? Well, let me see. Give me my rubber band so I can stretch the run across that B. You gotta be kidding me. So the Patriots, Tom Brady is on the cutting edge of fitness, and with the Browns, they're getting fitness advice from World War II, Cleveland Browns.
Starting point is 01:57:37 And that is our best for last. It's interesting. I was talking about, Bucky Brooks brought up a really interesting thing that Bucky and I agreed before the draft we had discussed stuff off the air that we saw Lamar. I saw him as sort of a kind of a late second round talent, early third. And I called GMs and scouting directors
Starting point is 01:57:59 and that's where all my scouting director guys, when I come on the air and have strong opinions about Tebow or Darnold or Lamar Jackson, you know, guys I haven't seen play yet, Johnny Mansell Baker. It's because my sources are telling me that. That's why I rarely have a strong opinion
Starting point is 01:58:14 about a young quarterback if I don't have guys in my ear telling it to me who watch film and film and film and tape and tape and tape. But as Bucky pointed out, the reason the Ravens took him as the last pick, this is why Bridgewater was taken as the last pick. You can be a second round pick, but if you don't, if you need a quarterback eventually and you don't think you're going to get him again, you can control his contract in the fifth year. And Peter Schrager was on earlier, and Peter said, this is why this year for the Cowboys and Dacken's, Prescott, he went in the fourth round. That's why it's such a big year for Dak Prescott, not just for Dak, but for the cowboy people because they won't control him on what they see this year. Gough and Wentz, same draft class, our first round picks. So their teams have a fifth year option on those guys. That means they could be locked up for five years and they're entering
Starting point is 01:59:06 their third year. Dak Prescott went on day three, a fourth round pick. So what does that mean? It means that he only has a four-year contract and he can start negotiating. at the end of this season. But if he is not great and they take a big step back, don't expect them to back up the Brinks trucks just because he was good three years ago. It's a fascinating year for Dak because his contract already is an issue and it's going to come up at the end of this season. It really is.
Starting point is 01:59:31 Russell Wilson went through this where Seattle had to make a decision. And see, I remember Pete Carroll saying there was concern in Seattle. He is small. He runs a lot. Is the light going to go on in the pocket? And Seattle made the right decision. And I think, you know, it's funny because, John, you are the cowboy fan. You read everything on the Cowboys. I mean, I watch all their games.
Starting point is 01:59:51 They're on TV every week. And any special on the Cowboys, I'll watch. They do camp here in Los Angeles. When I see DAC, I see a franchise quarterback. I think sometimes not every company's Walmart or Facebook, Alex Smith is a franchise quarterback. To me, the key in the NFL has always been you don't want to be in chaos at quarterback. You don't have to be great.
Starting point is 02:00:14 If you get Aaron Rogers, then you just, you know, every other year draft a quarterback in the fourth round. But if you get Blake Bortles, my takeaway is everybody knows Andy Dalton and Blake Bortals. Everybody knows the story. You are looking for the next quarterback. You're absolutely looking for the next quarterback. When I say DAC to you, you're more critical of DAC than I am, John. Yeah, I would say so. You think he is what?
Starting point is 02:00:37 C plus? I think he's good. The problem is when you pay quarterbacks, that kind of money, they have to be able to carry your team. team because you can't afford to do much else. And I don't know that he's the kind of guy that can carry a team and an offense. It's just so interesting. You don't want to end up like the Ravens, right? They won't want to fly.
Starting point is 02:00:56 They paid Flacco. What have they been since they paid Flacco all that money? Because we've kind of learned like- Well, the Giants did this with Eli Manning. Right. And they're good, but they can't carry you to deep playoff runs if you can't pay anybody else on the offense. It's so funny about quarterbacks.
Starting point is 02:01:10 That's why I always root. People think I root against Baker Mayfield. I root for good quarterback play. Because when I turn on the red zone, it's just more entertaining if everybody can play. Nothing's worse than watching poorly quarterback football. I've always said this. People love defense when it's their team's defense. But if I went to you and said, there's a game tonight, it'll be 10 to 7.
Starting point is 02:01:29 You'd be like, I'm not going to watch. If I said it's going to be 29, 28, everybody'd want to watch. Nobody cares about great defense unless it's your team's great defense. So football is much more consumable in the offense and the quarterback play is excellent. I see DAC as a franchise guy. And I've said this before. I have him, and I don't have my list in front of me, but he's somewhere like in that whole 14-16 area. Now, to me, top 15, you build around him.
Starting point is 02:01:58 If you have below 16-17, my argument is you're always looking to replace him. You are, you're structuring a contract to find him. Like Blake Bortles, I'm looking to replace him. Ryan Tannehill, he's okay. I'm looking to replace him. Dak, if I signed him, I wouldn't be looking to replace him. I like him. By the way, Lane Kiffin's on the show tomorrow.
Starting point is 02:02:18 T.J. Husman Zoda on the show tomorrow. Hushman Zoda. Jamie Maggio and I will return tomorrow. It's the third. Last night, a blown call changed a game.
